    Chapter 145: Past Events

    Yu Linna, age six.

This was a story only she knew.

The little girl with golden hair, a delicate face, and captivating eyes had arrived at the orphanage not long ago. Wu Siyu, the orphanage director, had taken her in from the police, who had rescued her from human traffickers. Unable to trace her family or locate any missing person reports matching her description, they had classified her as an orphan.

Yu Linna had been at the orphanage for less than three months, a relatively well-behaved child, easily pacified with food. Her only distinguishing feature, and a source of unwanted attention, was her striking appearance: golden hair, a face with both European and Asian features, a clear indication of her mixed heritage. A mixed-race child was a rarity at the orphanage, making her a target of curiosity, with some children, especially girls her age, constantly touching her hair.

Director Wu Siyu had taken a special liking to Yu Linna, often sharing her hidden stash of candies and chocolates, fostering a close bond between them.

However, their peaceful days were numbered. The orphanage received a demolition notice from the government, planning to build a commercial street in its place. Though Wu Siyu would receive a substantial compensation, the children faced the prospect of homelessness.

Fortunately, the government assisted in finding adoptive families for the children. The plan worked, and within months, many children found new homes, the demolition proceeding as scheduled.

Except for Yu Linna, the little mixed-race girl.

The demolition plans had been in motion even before Yu Linna’s arrival, the children gradually being adopted. By the time she arrived, only a few remained. Over the next two months, the number dwindled further, until fewer than ten children were left.

Due to her mixed heritage, few families were willing to adopt Yu Linna. Most Chinese families preferred not to adopt a mixed-race child, fearing social stigma and unwanted attention. They didn’t want to be subjected to gossip and judgment.

“Director, it’s a problem. No one wants to adopt little Linna. The rest of us have found foster families, but she… no one wants her. And the orphanage is being pressured to vacate the premises for demolition.”

Wu Siyu was also troubled, unable to find a solution. Yu Linna’s situation was unique, making adoption almost impossible unless she was sent abroad, which was even less likely.

“Nana is about the same age as my daughter. I can’t just leave her on the streets.”

“But Director, we’re running out of time. What should we do?”

Wu Siyu was at her wit’s end. She had established the orphanage to provide shelter and care for children, never imagining it would be demolished so soon. And she was facing unemployment. Though her husband provided for the family, she still had to pay for her daughter’s education.

What was she going to do?

Yu Linna often spent her time drawing in the orphanage courtyard, using a twig to sketch figures on the ground, usually a man and a woman, her idealized image of parents, a void she filled through her art.

She carried another person’s memories, the memories of a ten-year-old boy, a secret she kept hidden.

The boy had also lived in an orphanage, dying before reaching adulthood, his memories now residing within her.

Though these memories served no practical purpose.

    “Sigh…”

Yu Linna’s stomach growled. She patted her belly; it had been days since she had a proper meal, subsisting on pickled vegetables and plain porridge, not even a single green vegetable. She suspected it was because the other children were being adopted, but she still craved something delicious. The orphanage used to have bread; now, even steamed buns were a rarity.

    She was so hungry…

Suddenly, a hand gently stroked her head. Yu Linna looked up and saw a woman with a warm smile, holding two steaming buns.

“Hungry? Auntie brought you something delicious.”

    “Thank you, Aunt Wu!”

Yu Linna grabbed the buns and devoured them, her manners forgotten. These meat buns were a feast, the most delicious food she had ever tasted! After days of bland porridge and pickled vegetables, this was like heaven. Life couldn’t be better.

Wu Siyu, watching her eat with such gusto, smiled, but her heart was heavy. If no one adopted Yu Linna, she would have to be transferred to another orphanage. There was no other choice. Most of the children had been adopted; only she remained.

    Could this child really…

She was so young; was this really the best option…?

“Aunt Wu, what’s wrong? Why are you looking at me like that?”

Having finished the buns, Yu Linna looked up at her with innocent eyes, her cuteness undeniable.

Wu Siyu patted her head, taking out a tissue to wipe her mouth.

“Look at you, your face is covered in crumbs.”

This six-year-old girl, so adorable, so charming, already possessed the qualities of a star. She would be a natural.

“Nana, where do you want to go in the future?”

“I don’t want to go anywhere. I want to stay here, with you, Aunt Wu.”

    “You really mean that?”

“Yes! You’re so kind to me! I want to stay with you forever!”

    This child…

    Wu Siyu smiled.

Such a sweet, innocent child. Why didn’t she have parents? It was baffling. And why wouldn’t anyone adopt her? She was so lovely. Was it simply because she was mixed-race?

    If all else failed…

“Nana, how about you come home with me?”

She had made up her mind. Since no one wanted to adopt Yu Linna, she would. She would give her a home.

“Home? Where? Isn’t this my home?”

“No, Auntie’s home. I’ve decided. I’ll take you home with me. You can be my daughter, okay?”

    “No.”

“Why not? I’m so good to you. Why don’t you want to come home with me?”

“You’re my auntie, not my mommy.”

    “Haha, you…”

Wu Siyu chuckled. Convincing her to call her “mommy” would be a challenge, but she would take it slow.

That day, Wu Siyu decided to take her home.

“Director, are you sure about this? You already have a daughter.”

“Yes, I’ve made up my mind. As long as she doesn’t object, I’ll be her family. And if she wants to leave in the future, I’ll respect her decision.”

And so, just before the orphanage was demolished, Yu Linna, the last remaining child, having lived there for less than three months, was taken in by Wu Siyu. The orphanage became a distant memory.

As Wu Siyu led her to the car, Yu Linna was confused, unsure where she was being taken. Sitting in the car, she felt a sense of déjà vu, a vague memory of being driven around by strangers, though the details were hazy.

The trauma of her childhood, the head injury, had clouded her memories.

    “Auntie, where are we going?”

“Home. You’ll be living with me from now on. You have a home now.”

    “Home?”

“Yes, I’m taking you home. You’ll have a mommy and daddy, and a big sister.”

Yu Linna was unfamiliar with these concepts, unsure what they meant.

She simply sensed no malice from Wu Siyu and obediently followed.

Getting out of the car, Wu Siyu, dragging her suitcase and holding Yu Linna’s hand, entered the apartment building, taking the elevator, a novel experience for Yu Linna, her eyes wide with wonder. Reaching their floor, Wu Siyu unlocked the door.

Opening the door marked a new beginning.

    “Honey, I’m home! Miss me?”

“Welcome back, Siyu. Come in. I made some tea you’ll love.”

The man, though not particularly handsome, had pleasant features and an average build, neither muscular nor thin. His name was Huo Qiulin, Wu Siyu’s husband.

    “And who is this?”

He noticed the little blonde girl hiding shyly behind Wu Siyu.

“This is Yu Linna. I brought her from the orphanage. I’m planning to adopt her.”

As they talked, a small head peeked out from the hallway, her bright eyes fixed on the blonde girl. Yu Linna, meeting her gaze, sensed her curiosity.

“Ningning, what are you doing here? Come here, sweetie, Mommy’s home!”

Wu Siyu, smiling, picked up the little girl, stroking her cheek, happy to see her daughter again.

“Mommy, who is she?” Huo Ningning asked, pointing at Yu Linna.

This was the first encounter between Yu Linna and Huo Ningning, a memory that would later haunt them both.

  • Devilish Disciple [Transmigration] 75

    Chapter 75: A Puppy

What was this Jinxu Gui? (T/N:I’ll keep its name as the artifact “Jinxu Gui”. Gui means ‘sundial’ .)

    <Sundial>

History of Sundials - First Time Keeping Device

Si Qinglan saw the confusion in Li Yu’s eyes.

She sighed, looked at the green jade sundial in Li Yu’s hand, and recounted a story from a distant past, a past beyond their reach.

It was said that in ancient times, the God of Time, Shuhu, succumbed to his inner demons and, as his soul dissipated, his uncontrolled power scattered throughout the Three Realms.

The world was plunged into temporal chaos.

Day and night became erratic, the seasons disordered.

Extreme heat and extreme cold could last for a fleeting moment or an eternity.

And that wasn’t the worst of it.

It was said that during that time, one could inadvertently slip into the cracks of time.

People would lose their loved ones without warning.

And even if they were reunited, years, even centuries, might have passed.

And sometimes, cherished memories would dissipate like smoke, like rain falling on barren land, forgotten.

Like insignificant dust motes, carried away by the wind.

There was also a legend that said that at the turning of the tides, if one gazed at the water, they might glimpse the future or the past.

But these glimpses weren’t always true.

Because in a distorted timeline, everything was subject to change.

With the laws of time broken, the Three Realms suffered.

To restore order, the gods gathered Shuhu’s scattered power, refined it with heavenly fire for a hundred years, and from the chaotic ruins, forged the Jinxu Gui, an artifact capable of restoring the laws of time.

“The Jinxu Gui contains the power of Shuhu, the God of Time. With enough spiritual energy, its wielder can not only stop, slow down, or accelerate time, but also glimpse the past and the future.” Si Qinglan frowned. “But such power is incredibly difficult to control. A single misstep can disrupt cause and effect, altering the course of destiny…”

Her expression was serious. “This is defying the heavens; no one knows the price.”

Li Yu thought for a moment. “So…I can use it to see what happened four thousand years ago?”

“Li Yu, it’s too dangerous!” Si Qinglan said anxiously. “Even if you’re incredibly careful, you can’t guarantee you won’t disrupt anything… Besides, looking back four thousand years is incredibly difficult! You might get lost in the cracks of time, unable to find your way back!”

    “…”

【The host needn’t worry about that. Navigation can be left to the system!】

Li Yu paused, then said softly, “Si Qinglan, I won’t get lost.”

    Si Qinglan: “…”

Li Yu: “Disrupting cause and effect, defying the heavens, if it can prevent this disaster, I don’t care about the price.”

Si Qinglan: “Do you even understand what you’re saying?”

    Li Yu: “I do.”

    Si Qinglan: “…”

The final mission had a time limit; there was no time for recuperation or preparation.

In her current state, trying to rescue Mu Tao from Weisheng Xuanzhu was a long shot; she might as well try and hope for the best.

Since this artifact was recommended by the system, even if it was risky, there should be a way to use it safely.

This was her only chance to save Mu Tao, prevent the Heavenly Demon’s revival, and complete her mission.

She had to try, no matter the risks.

But she had to convince Si Qinglan first.

So, she asked, “Si Qinglan, why do you think disrupting cause and effect, altering fate, is such a serious matter?”

“Because it makes everything unpredictable.” Si Qinglan said seriously. “Everything in this world is governed by cause and effect, destiny.”

“It was because Weisheng Xuanzhu casually altered the fate of a mortal woman that the human realm, peaceful for over four thousand years, was suddenly plunged into chaos three hundred years ago.” She continued, “Even changing the future has such severe consequences. If you use the Jinxu Gui to tamper with the past, the results could be catastrophic!”

“Li Yu, you can’t bear such a burden, no one can…” Si Qinglan tried to persuade her.

“Then who can bear the consequences of the Heavenly Demon’s revival?” Li Yu retorted.

    Si Qinglan was speechless.

Li Yu: “Does the human realm truly have the strength to face the Heavenly Demon now?”

    Si Qinglan: “…”

Li Yu: “If the Heavenly Demon’s revival is the destined fate of the human realm, then why can’t it be changed? Why can’t this fate be altered?”

Si Qinglan lowered her gaze, lost in thought.

“Speaking of defying the heavens, hasn’t Weisheng Xuanzhu already done that?” Li Yu frowned. “He plotted and schemed, disrupted cause and effect, altered destinies, and if no one stops him, he will succeed.”

“Only the fate everyone accepts is a fate worth following!” Li Yu said, her voice calm, yet firm. “If someone tries to control it, and no one resists, then fate becomes their plaything.”

She didn’t care about the Dao of immortals.

She only knew that she had to save Mu Tao, and it wasn’t just about completing the mission.

“Si Qinglan…” Li Yu sighed. “You always talk about cause and effect, destiny, the price of actions, always seeming so rational—but aren’t we…paying the price for our past choices right now?”

    “…”

“When you decided to take in the Demon Bone, how did these concerns about cause and effect, destiny, and consequences lose to a moment of compassion?” Li Yu looked at Si Qinglan, her tone both playful and genuinely curious.

    “…”

“I’m already paying the price, look at my current state.” Li Yu smiled nonchalantly. “A little more…won’t make much difference… I don’t have much left to lose anyway.”

    “…”

“Just let me try,” she whispered. “I know my limits; I won’t be reckless.”

Si Qinglan looked up, a strange glint in her misty green eyes.

She stared at Li Yu in silence, as if trying to see through her.

    But she couldn’t.

She sighed deeply, a mixture of resignation and helplessness in her smile.

Si Qinglan: “I can’t argue with you.”

    Li Yu: “…”

Si Qinglan: “But with your current strength, activating the Jinxu Gui…isn’t that a bit too much?”

Li Yu: “It should be fine.”

The system was willing to assist; what was there to be afraid of?

Si Qinglan shook her head. “It is too much, you need my help.”

Li Yu was surprised. “Won’t you be strained?”

“Of course, incredibly strained!” Si Qinglan said, a smile appearing in her eyes. “But two people being strained is better than one, right? This is the Jinxu Gui; we can’t afford any mistakes!”

“Si Qinglan…you can stay out of this…”

“Weren’t you just saying we’re all paying the price for our past choices?” Si Qinglan retorted with a smile. “I was the one who brought the Demon Bone to Mount Chao Yao; how can I stay out of this?”

She stood up, brushed the dust off her clothes, and extended her hand towards Li Yu. “Come on, use my spiritual energy first.”

Li Yu took her hand and stood up, asking casually, “Why yours first?”

Si Qinglan: “This path isn’t easy. I’m worried you’ll have the strength to go, but not to return.”

    Li Yu: “…”

Si Qinglan: “Both the human realm and the Demon Realm are in chaos now. I can guard things here, but if something goes wrong, I won’t be able to help you. You need to conserve your strength for the return journey.”

Li Yu took a deep breath and stopped arguing, then whispered, “Thank you, Si Qinglan.”

Si Qinglan seemed to freeze, then chuckled wryly. “Li Yu, you’ve caused me so much trouble, and all you ever say is ‘thank you’—your thanks are worthless.”

Li Yu opened her mouth but couldn’t respond.

Si Qinglan: “This time…make them worth something! If you can pull this off, I’ll forget about all the spiritual herbs and elixirs you owe me!”

She hadn’t been keeping track anyway, had she?

Li Yu thought this, a smile appearing on her face.

Si Qinglan rolled her eyes, not bothering to argue, and erected a barrier around them.

She then turned to Li Yu and said seriously, “After this is over, I also have some questions for you. And you better answer them truthfully.”

Li Yu smiled and nodded. “I’ll tell you everything.”

“Then stop wasting time.” Si Qinglan gestured towards the Jinxu Gui and said playfully, “Let’s go, do you need me to carry you?”

Li Yu, no longer hesitating, activated the Jinxu Gui with the system’s assistance.

Si Qinglan’s spiritual energy flowed into her, like a gentle wind, a flowing stream, guided by Li Yu, all of it pouring into the sundial.

The green jade sundial lifted from her palm and floated into the air, expanding to an enormous size.

Its blue light intensified as the shadow of the gnomon moved in reverse.

The dial, its markings blurred, spun rapidly, a kaleidoscope of colors.

She found herself amidst a vast starry sky.

A star streaked past her, and she felt the weight of millennia, her heart aching, her very soul trembling.

This wasn’t just a starry sky, she thought.

It was the condensed light of countless years, lingering in this void.

Some of it flowed beneath her feet, forming a river, some floated above, transforming into stars.

A faint golden light guided her.

The Jinxu Gui was in her hand, a continuous flow of spiritual energy within her.

She walked along the river of stars, each step creating ripples in time.

A cool breeze, as if trying to stop her.

    She continued walking, unfazed.

The breeze turned into a biting wind, howling and threatening to consume her.

It wasn’t just wind; it was the price of traveling through time.

The further she went, the more difficult it became.

Si Qinglan had been right; this path wasn’t easy, but she couldn’t give up.

She strengthened her protective aura and, following the system’s guidance, continued walking against the biting wind,

The passing stars, shattering against her clothes, leaving behind fleeting images of the past.

Dynasties rose and fell, mountains crumbled and valleys formed, in the blink of an eye.

The stars turned into sharp blades, tearing at her flesh, her very soul.

The river of stars beneath her feet became thorns, drawing blood.

The icy wind thinned her protective aura, almost tearing it apart.

Exhaustion, like the wind, threatened to consume her.

    Blood stained her tattered robes.

Her legs, numb with pain, still carried her forward, each step a struggle.

She couldn’t tell which pain was greater, this, or severing the Harmony Bells.

She didn’t know how much longer she had to walk, nor what she was even thinking.

    How strange…

    She hadn’t even considered stopping.

Why was she so determined to walk this path?

    She didn’t understand.

Or perhaps, the pain had clouded her mind.

She could feel her consciousness fading, yet she couldn’t imagine the consequences of collapsing here. She just stared at the faint golden light, gritting her teeth, and continued walking,

Until her vision blurred, the guiding light almost disappearing.

The vast starry sky turned into a dizzying blur, engulfing her…

She closed her eyes and walked on, guided by instinct.

Just before her last shred of consciousness faded, she smelled the salty scent of the sea.

She was on the ship leaving the mountain, the sea breeze a cool caress.

A young girl’s sweet voice, accompanied by the chiming of silver bells, echoed behind her.

She turned and saw a flash of red.

Beneath the blazing sun, they stood side by side, looking out at the ocean.

She was slightly afraid, but the little girl seemed to love it.

The little girl in red, always flitting around her.

Even the mountain’s wind and snow couldn’t stop her.

    Today’s meal was a feast.

The little girl was celebrating learning her first spell.

The little girl was building another snowman in the courtyard.

She seemed to enjoy creating a “mini-me” to guard the place.

Another winter, the world seemingly abandoning them.

The little girl, without a spatial pouch yet, carried her small bundle on her thin shoulders.

They traveled together, hiding and running,

    Neither complaining.

It was the little girl’s first time celebrating the human New Year.

She listened to the firecrackers, watched the fireworks, her eyes filled with a joy she had never known.

If only she could show her more of the human world, Li Yu thought.

Take her through the seasons, show her how humans celebrated.

    “Master!”

    “Master~~”

    “Master…”

The familiar calls echoed in her ears.

“Master, the noodles you wanted are ready!”

    “…”

    That wasn’t right.

She had left and never returned.

    This…was a dream…

A weight pressed against her chest, a warm, heavy weight.

Something was touching her face, warm and rough, wet, rubbing against her cheek.

It tickled, and she instinctively tried to move away, but the sensation followed, brushing against her eyelids—a fleeting warmth, followed by a cool touch.

She opened her eyes and saw a small, gray puppy licking her face with its pink tongue.

A cold drop of water landed on her cheek, startling her.

The puppy, also startled, stopped licking and tilted its head, staring at her with its round eyes.

    Li Yu swallowed nervously.

The coolness on her cheek, where the puppy had licked her, slowly brought her back to reality.

    Where was she?

She was in bed, covered by a blanket, pale curtains tied to the bedposts, motionless in the still air.

A subtle, pleasant fragrance filled the room.

It was nighttime, snow falling heavily outside, the sky dark.

The room was warm, clearly protected by a spiritual barrier.

Although there were no candles, the room wasn’t dark, bathed in a soft, white light, like moonlight.

The puppy, seeing her awake, stopped licking and retreated, its head resting on its paws, its gaze averted.

“You…” she started, and the puppy, as if trying to avoid responsibility, jumped off the bed.

It hid under the table, its tail between its legs, its ears drooping, seemingly afraid, yet its round eyes still watching her intently.

Li Yu could sense spiritual energy from the puppy; it was a demon.

She sat up, looking down at herself.

Her clothes had been changed, and her wounds were bandaged, seemingly healed with spiritual energy.

Where had the Jinxu Gui brought her?

    And who saved her?

Did she still have the strength to continue her journey to four thousand years ago?

Her head was still spinning, unable to think clearly, she decided to first figure out where she was.

She looked at the puppy and asked softly, “You can understand me, right?”

The puppy blinked, whimpered softly, and nodded.

    Li Yu: “Where am I?”

The puppy barked, seemingly answering, but she didn’t understand dog language.

She had to rephrase her question.

Li Yu: “You’re not the one who saved me, right? Do you have a master?”

The puppy nodded, its tail wagging slightly beneath the table.

Li Yu: “Are you afraid of me?”

The puppy blinked, neither nodding nor shaking its head, just peeking out from under the table, its ears no longer drooping.

Li Yu smiled and, ignoring her aching body, got out of bed and walked over to the table.

Supporting herself against the edge, she looked down at the puppy. “What are you hiding from?”

The puppy whimpered softly, not answering.

Li Yu, wincing slightly, crouched down and reached out towards the puppy. Seeing that it didn’t flinch, she gently patted its head.

She didn’t know why, but this little puppy made her heart melt. Even being licked all over her face couldn’t dampen her affection.

She stroked the puppy’s soft fur behind its ears. “Little puppy,” she coaxed gently, “Can you take me to your master?”

The puppy nodded and was about to come out from under the table when the door creaked open, letting in a gust of wind and snow.

Li Yu looked up and froze, her heart sinking, her breath catching in her throat.

She saw a pair of eyes, as dark as night, and her body stiffened.

But he didn’t seem to recognize her, just walked in, closed the door, bringing with him the chill of the wind and snow, and placed a tray with a bowl of medicine on the table.

“Since you’re awake, drink your medicine.” He glanced at the puppy under the table. “Why are you here again? Licking people again?”

The puppy emerged from under the table, its tail between its legs, and sat down at his feet, its ears drooping, whimpering softly, like a child who had done something wrong.

“Didn’t I tell you, you have to ask for permission first?”

The puppy whined and lay down, its paws kicking the air in protest.

He seemed exasperated with the puppy and sighed, then looked up at Li Yu. “I apologize, it’s still young, doesn’t understand these things. Did it bother you?”

    He was…being polite…?

    This scene was unexpected.

“No, it’s fine…” she replied instinctively.

Then, after a long moment, it finally dawned on her—she might be in the right place, at the right time.

“Where am I?” she asked tentatively.

    “The North Sea.”

So, it was the North Sea.

Weisheng Xuanzhu’s gaze was polite, unfamiliar, he clearly didn’t recognize her.

But according to the story, he had known “Li Yu” before his hibernation, which had lasted over a thousand years. He had even come looking for her immediately after waking up.

    What was going on?

Had she gone too far back in time?

“You should drink your medicine,” he suddenly said.

“…Oh!” Li Yu stood up, supporting herself against the table, and looked at the dark liquid in the bowl, a wave of resistance rising within her. “I’m not a mortal; I can heal myself with spiritual energy. Do I really have to drink this?”

“Your spiritual energy is depleted, and you’ve been exposed to the cold. If you don’t want any lasting effects, it’s best to drink it.” He said. “This isn’t ordinary medicine; it will greatly aid your recovery.”

…She had vowed to never drink Chinese medicine again.

Forget it, she had risked her life, what was a little medicine?

Li Yu picked up the bowl, took a deep breath, and was about to down it in one gulp.

But the bitter smell made her recoil.

“N, no, I…I’ll drink it later.”

She saw the man and the puppy looking at her expectantly, as if they wouldn’t leave until she finished the medicine. Her hand, holding the bowl, froze.

Fine, she’d drink it, this body needed to recover.

Li Yu gritted her teeth and forced herself to drink the medicine.

She, who wouldn’t even drink slightly bitter powdered medicine in her past life, was now drinking Chinese medicine!

    So bitter!!!

Couldn’t they offer a piece of candy to cleanse her palate?

She put down the bowl, her spirit crushed, and the puppy circled her legs, its fluffy tail wagging, as if in praise.

Li Yu couldn’t help but pat its head. “Are you…praising me?”

The puppy nodded and licked her hand.

Li Yu: “Your puppy is quite cute.”

    Weisheng Xuanzhu: “It’s a wolf.”

    Li Yu: “…?”

The little wolf pup barked and gently nibbled her finger.

  • Qin Auntie, Save Me [Rebirth] 87

    Chapter 87

Qin Qianrou, returning this time, truly felt like she was coming home, she could finally relax and stay for a while. She had long been accustomed to business trips and sudden assignments, always on the go, aware of her return date, yet never truly anticipating it.

Shen Yiqiu hung up Qin Qianrou’s coat and placed her suitcase neatly against the wall, then put her arm around her shoulders, leading her to the living room. “Want something to eat, or a drink?”

It was already quite late, and Qin Qianrou, having had little appetite these past two days, shook her head. “Just something warm to drink.”

Shen Yiqiu kissed her forehead. “Coming right up.”

As she turned to leave, Qin Qianrou grabbed her hand.

    “Have you grown taller?”

Shen Yiqiu instinctively compared their heights, she didn’t think there was much difference.

“Your shoulders are higher than mine now when you hug me.”

Shen Yiqiu wasn’t particularly surprised, but she was still pleased.

“Then I’ll be the one protecting Jiejie from now on.”

Qin Qianrou poked her shoulder playfully and sent her to the kitchen. “Silly.”

After a warm drink, Qin Qianrou leaned against Shen Yiqiu’s shoulder, resting for a bit, her travel fatigue easing. It was almost 11 pm. Shen Yiqiu, having finished her exams, didn’t have to follow her usual school schedule, but Qin Qianrou did, she still had to go to the station tomorrow to complete the paperwork for her return.

“It’s late, go take a shower.” Qin Qianrou stood up and urged Shen Yiqiu to go to bed.

Shen Yiqiu’s movements were slightly hesitant, and only after Qin Qianrou entered the bathroom did she realize why, the child’s earlier expression had been unusual, her cheeks suddenly flushing, her hesitant and nervous demeanor.

Qin Qianrou let the warm water wash over her, soothing her tired muscles, her shoulders still aching slightly. She wasn’t feeling very well today, the constant dinners these past few days, both official ones and private gatherings with colleagues from other stations, she had attended a few unavoidable ones, and inevitably, had a few drinks.

She wasn’t a lightweight, but she rarely drank much at social events, firstly, for her own safety, and secondly, to maintain her professional image, after all, alcohol could easily lead to mistakes, saying something inappropriate, making a blunder that could be used against her.

So, Qin Qianrou had always been disciplined in this regard, but completely abstaining from alcohol wasn’t an option either, and after several days of these social obligations, she had actually consumed quite a bit.

Qin Qianrou emerged from the bathroom, her hair still damp, and saw Shen Yiqiu already sitting on the bed, waiting for her. Seeing her emerge, a smile immediately appeared on Shen Yiqiu’s face, and she stood up and walked over.

“Let me do it.” Shen Yiqiu naturally took the towel from Qin Qianrou and continued drying her hair.

After her hair was half-dry, Shen Yiqiu picked up the hairdryer, skillfully running her fingers through Qin Qianrou’s hair.

Even though she had done this many times before, Shen Yiqiu couldn’t help but exclaim, “Jiejie, your hair is so beautiful, and so thick, I’m so envious.”

“You’re so much younger than me, and you’re comparing hair volume?”

Shen Yiqiu didn’t have long hair, always keeping it at a medium length, but hair volume, or rather, the lack thereof, was a common topic of conversation among her classmates, hair loss, after all, was no longer a problem exclusive to middle-aged people.

University students, in the prime of their youth, yet few had hair as thick and healthy as Qin Qianrou’s. Coupled with her beautiful features and tall, slender figure, there was practically no one on campus who could compare to her.

Shen Yiqiu’s heart softened, such an outstanding and exceptional Jiejie, her girlfriend, she was truly the luckiest person in the world.

“If Jiejie were at Meng Da now, you would definitely be the campus belle.”

Qin Qianrou, her eyes closed, enjoying the feeling, could still picture Shen Yiqiu’s earnest expression.

“I’m almost thirty, how can I compare to you young people? Campus belle? I would be a laughingstock.”

Shen Yiqiu quickly protested, “What’s wrong with thirty? Thirty-year-old women are the most charming, so much better than those empty-headed university students with nothing but looks. Besides, Jiejie, you’re not old at all, I won’t let you say that!”

Qin Qianrou’s lips curved into a smile, this child seemed even more concerned about her age than she was.

“Everyone ages, it’s just a natural part of life.” Qin Qianrou’s eyes remained closed, but she reached out and placed her hand on Shen Yiqiu’s wrist. “As long as you don’t think I’m old, that’s all that matters.”

Shen Yiqiu leaned closer, her cheek brushing against Qin Qianrou’s, inhaling the faint fragrance of her hair.

“As long as Jiejie doesn’t think I’m too young, that’s all that matters. To me, Jiejie will always be the most beautiful.”

Qin Qianrou knew there was no such thing as eternal beauty, but at this moment, she believed in Shen Yiqiu’s sincerity, her unwavering devotion,

because, in her heart, Shen Yiqiu was also… the best.

After her hair was dry, Qin Qianrou sat on the bed, and when Shen Yiqiu finished tidying up and joined her, they fell silent.

It seemed like they should say something, or perhaps… do something.

Qin Qianrou remembered she had promised to give Shen Yiqiu a gift when she returned, and the gift, clean and fragrant, was ready to be unwrapped.

But when would be the appropriate time? Qin Qianrou was conflicted, a gift shouldn’t be delayed, but tonight… she felt a little hesitant.

Firstly, it was late, and she was tired, secondly, she wasn’t feeling very well, a persistent discomfort in her lower abdomen.

Shen Yiqiu, seeing Qin Qianrou’s slightly furrowed brow, as if deep in thought, didn’t want to disturb her, she hadn’t been thinking about the gift, her only wish had been for Jiejie to come home.

Jiejie being home was enough; as for the gift, it could wait.

However, Qin Qianrou’s silence continued for a full fifteen minutes, which was unusual, and Shen Yiqiu, glancing at the time, thought that if they delayed any longer, Jiejie wouldn’t be able to get up tomorrow.

“Jiejie, we should go to bed.”

An ordinary statement, one she had said to Qin Qianrou countless times in this bed, yet tonight, it felt different.

Qin Qianrou suddenly became nervous. She glanced at Shen Yiqiu, then quickly looked away, as if deliberating something.

Her reaction puzzled Shen Yiqiu, and she asked, worried, “Are you feeling unwell?”

Qin Qianrou instinctively nodded, and before she could speak, she felt a hand on her forehead.

Shen Yiqiu gently checked her temperature, it didn’t seem too high.

    “A headache?”

    “No.”

“Then what’s wrong?” Shen Yiqiu’s tone softened, her concern evident, and Qin Qianrou’s heart melted a little.

She lay down, pulling Shen Yiqiu down with her. “Just some discomfort in my lower abdomen.”

    “Did you eat something bad?”

“Not exactly, probably from the alcohol a few days ago.”

Qin Qianrou turned over, snuggling into Shen Yiqiu’s embrace, being held like this was much more comforting than lying alone in that hotel bed, even the discomfort in her abdomen seemed to have lessened.

“Let me rub it for you.” Shen Yiqiu wrapped one arm around Qin Qianrou, the other gently massaging her abdomen.

Her movements weren’t exactly professional, but her gentle touch and her love were more effective than any medicine.

Already drowsy, and having not slept properly at home in a while, Qin Qianrou quickly drifted off to sleep in Shen Yiqiu’s comforting embrace, the earlier anticipation having vanished the moment Qin Qianrou mentioned her discomfort, all she could think about now was making Jiejie feel better.

Even after sensing that the person in her arms had fallen asleep, Shen Yiqiu didn’t stop immediately, she had experienced similar pain before, she knew the discomfort lingered even in sleep, she blinked, trying to stay awake a little longer, she wanted to continue soothing Jiejie.

In the middle of the night, Shen Yiqiu was woken up by a soft moan, she opened her eyes slightly, the person in her arms stirring, as if trying to move away.

Shen Yiqiu turned on the bedside lamp and rubbed her eyes. “What’s wrong?”

Qin Qianrou’s forehead was damp with sweat, her face pale.

This startled Shen Yiqiu, and she was instantly wide awake.

“It’s nothing, I just need to use the restroom.” Qin Qianrou’s voice was weak, and she declined Shen Yiqiu’s offer to help her up.

Shen Yiqiu yawned, but she wasn’t sleepy at all, she was worried about Jiejie, thankfully, she didn’t stay in the bathroom for long.

Back in bed, Qin Qianrou’s complexion still looked pale, but slightly better than before. Shen Yiqiu leaned closer, careful not to disturb her.

    “It’s nothing, I just… started my period.”

Her period? The timing seemed off, over a week early. And Qin Qianrou didn’t usually have painful periods, why was she in so much pain?

Seeing Shen Yiqiu’s worried frown, Qin Qianrou forced a smile, “Probably from all that alcohol and the cold a few days ago, it’s nothing, I’ll be fine after some sleep.”

“I’ll make you some brown sugar water.”

Half a glass of brown sugar water later, although it didn’t exactly alleviate the pain, it did offer some comfort. Qin Qianrou thought for a moment, opened the drawer of her nightstand, took out a small bottle, and poured out two pills.

Shen Yiqiu recognized them as ibuprofen.

    “Jiejie…”

Shen Yiqiu’s heart ached, Qin Qianrou was a strong person, usually able to endure minor aches and pains, for her to resort to painkillers meant she must be in a lot of pain.

“It’s not that serious, I just want to be able to sleep.”

Shen Yiqiu, however, refused to listen and continued massaging her abdomen, her drowsiness completely gone, she just wanted to comfort her Jiejie.

As the night deepened, Shen Yiqiu turned off the bedside lamp, and the room returned to its previous quietness, Qin Qianrou, asleep now, her breathing even, the sweat on her forehead gone, the pain seemingly subsided. Shen Yiqiu’s hand continued its gentle massage.

But her thoughts wandered. She often thought about her time with Qin Qianrou, but now, more than ever, she wished her special ability could alleviate Jiejie’s pain. She didn’t need premonitions, she didn’t need time-freezing abilities, she just wanted Qin Qianrou to be well.

She suddenly recalled the incident at the Xinting Hotel, how she had touched the door with her bleeding hand, and the door had unlocked, perhaps her blood had special properties?

Shen Yiqiu’s heart raced, even without any scientific basis, even if it wasn’t guaranteed to work, it was just a little blood, what if it could ease Jiejie’s pain?

Carefully, she got out of bed, found a needle, sterilized it with an alcohol swab, then pricked her ring finger.

A drop of blood emerged, the bright red startling in the darkness, but this time, Shen Yiqiu wasn’t repelled by it, but how should she give it to Jiejie? Smear it on her? Jiejie would be scared if she woke up and saw that, should she wake her up and ask her to touch it? She would probably be scolded, maybe even banished from the room.

No, she would use her own method.

Shen Yiqiu, holding her bleeding finger, walked back to Qin Qianrou’s side and squatted down, she was sleeping more soundly now, probably thanks to the painkillers.

Shen Yiqiu gazed at her lovingly, then slowly leaned forward and kissed her.

Her kiss was gentle, unhurried, repeatedly moistening Jiejie’s lips.

Qin Qianrou, initially unresponsive, then instinctively responding, slightly parted her lips.

Shen Yiqiu, although reluctant, knew she should stop, she pulled away slightly and placed her injured finger between Qin Qianrou’s lips.

Qin Qianrou felt like she was in a strange dream, Shen Yiqiu’s kiss, then a metallic taste in her mouth, they had kissed many times, but they had always been gentle, even their most passionate kisses wouldn’t draw blood.

Could it be her own blood? Qin Qianrou’s dream became even more hazy, but she didn’t fully wake up, and the metallic taste gradually faded, disappearing into her dream.

Shen Yiqiu withdrew her finger, the bleeding had mostly stopped, and she put it in her mouth, a perfectly normal action, yet seeing Qin Qianrou before her, remembering where her finger had just been, she felt a strange tightening in her lower abdomen.

Sigh, sometimes, too much knowledge wasn’t a good thing, knowing was one thing, applying it was another!

After cleaning up, Shen Yiqiu returned to Qin Qianrou’s side. The warmth under the covers had dissipated slightly, and Qin Qianrou, as if seeking a new source of heat, instinctively snuggled closer as Shen Yiqiu lay down beside her.

Shen Yiqiu held her close, her hand still gently massaging her abdomen.

Qin Qianrou, after a peaceful night’s sleep, woke up feeling much better, the pain almost completely gone. She had experienced severe menstrual cramps a few times before, mostly before Chinese New Year, when the workload and the social obligations at the station intensified, but this time, her recovery had been unusually quick.

The person beside her, her head resting on Qin Qianrou’s shoulder, had also drifted off, her sleeping position slightly askew, but her arms remained around Qin Qianrou, her hand still gently massaging her abdomen. Shen Yiqiu had maintained this position since they fell asleep last night, and Qin Qianrou’s heart was filled with a mix of tenderness and gratitude.

She glanced at the time, not in a hurry to get up, and simply watched Shen Yiqiu sleeping peacefully.

It had been a while since she had properly looked at her, her longing suppressed, but her heart wouldn’t always obey, during many lonely nights, gazing at the glittering cityscape of Hai City, she had yearned for this innocent, youthful face in Meng City.

Actually, her face had matured, hints of her future beauty already emerging, and Qin Qianrou often imagined the extraordinary person her Qiu would become.

She hadn’t discussed future plans with Shen Yiqiu, she didn’t want to pressure her, Shen Yiqiu’s future was her own to choose, she just wanted her to grow and develop freely, she was Shen Yiqiu’s girlfriend, and she would be there for her, every step of the way.

Shen Yiqiu was a peaceful sleeper, she didn’t talk in her sleep or toss and turn, but Qin Qianrou suddenly missed those bright eyes that could capture her soul, a mischievous thought occurred to her, and she gently pinched Shen Yiqiu’s nose, then let go.

As expected, the sleeping figure’s nose twitched slightly, and Qin Qianrou chuckled softly.

After a while, seeing Shen Yiqiu still asleep, Qin Qianrou gently pinched her earlobe, marveling at its soft, smooth texture. She couldn’t seem to stop now, her playfulness taking over.

Shen Yiqiu stirred and woke up, still groggy, then she heard a soft chuckle.

    “Sleepyhead, sleeping in so late.”

    “Morning, Jiejie.”

Shen Yiqiu opened her eyes and, following her usual habit, kissed Qin Qianrou’s lips.

“You woke up later than me today.”

Shen Yiqiu, seeing Qin Qianrou’s playful mood, her rosy cheeks, knew she had fully recovered.

“So, I have to punish you.”

    “Punish me how?”

Qin Qianrou, still holding her earlobe, leaned closer and whispered, “You’ll have to wait a little longer for your gift.”

  • The Heroine Fell Deeply For Her [Quick Transmigration] 88

Chapter 88: I Love Slacking Off

The next day, Tao Ning woke up in bed and exhaled a breath of hot air.

Without touching her forehead, she knew she had caught a cold and developed a fever. She sat up, hugging the blanket.

As expected, her newly recovered body couldn’t handle such a toss. Just contact with cold water had given her a cold. She’d have to be more careful next time.

Opening her smart device to request leave, Tao Ning habitually ignored all messages from her adoptive parents, planning to reply to them later in the evening.

The original host, Zang Yuzhu, had a good relationship with her adoptive parents and was quite spoiled. She used to say that if both children made a request at the same time, even their biological son, Gu Yuan, would have to wait.

However, Tao Ning didn’t intend to build a close relationship with them for now. She cultivated a busy image, to the point that even Gu Yuan often couldn’t find her.

This dispelled any doubts her adoptive parents might have.

Despite this, she received high praise from her adoptive parents, saying she had matured, and that perhaps this incident would help her get into the Research Institute.

They also said, “If it doesn’t work out, we’ll help you find a way, as long as you’re willing.”

Tao Ning brushed them off with a few words, not committing to anything.

Judging from their attitude, they treated her no differently than their biological child, doting on her every whim, at least ensuring she had everything she needed in terms of food, clothing, shelter, and transportation.

It seemed that before Zang Yuzhu left, her adoptive parents had prepared a small medicine kit for her, which might contain the fever medicine Tao Ning needed.

It was New Star Calendar 1101, an interstellar age where human physical fitness had greatly improved. An adult developing a fever from a cold was something no one would believe if posted online, yet it had actually happened to Tao Ning.

Seeing Tao Ning searching the room for the medicine kit, 520 sighed: [You’re really like a glass cannon right now.]

    Possessing offensive power, yet fragile.

After searching together, they finally found the medicine kit, which was well-stocked and contained a variety of items.

There were both oral and topical medications. Zang Yuzhu, despite her seemingly careless attitude, had organized everything neatly and stored it in the cabinet.

520 watched Tao Ning rummage through the medicine kit, saying, [There should be fever medicine. If not, you’ll have to find the accompanying doctor… What’s this?]

Tao Ning picked up a small paper bag from the corner and squeezed it. There was also a partially eaten vitamin tablet, oval-shaped.

Zang Yuzhu’s physical constitution was indeed weak, and she was prone to illness. Her adoptive parents, worried about her health, always prepared vitamins for her whenever she went out.

It was said that Zang Yuzhu had suffered for a while before being sent to the military dependents’ orphanage. At that time, both her parents had died in battle, only having enough time to push her into an escape pod.

In that surprise attack, the entire army was annihilated, with only Zang Yuzhu, who had been visiting her parents for her birthday, surviving.

The escape pod’s landing location was also quite unfortunate. It crash-landed in a mixed zone on a remote planet when its energy was depleted. The mixed zone was a chaotic place, full of desperate individuals, and lacking kindness.

Seeing an escape pod land, they ignored the possibility of someone being inside and immediately dismantled it to sell the parts.

When Zang Yuzhu woke up inside, it was even more unfortunate. She was also taken to be sold.

Just before she was put on the auction block, the military arrived in time, rescuing her and taking down the human trafficking ring.

After that, Zang Yuzhu was about to be sent to an orphanage when Gu Yuan’s parents arrived and adopted her. But that period of hardship had left lasting effects on her health, making her physically weaker than other children her age.

Her frail health made her adoptive parents particularly attentive to her, and Gu Yuan also took extra care of her, which contributed to her spoiled nature.

Being able to grow up spoiled despite losing her parents was seen as proof of the Gu family’s dedication. This further enhanced Gu Yuan’s father’s reputation, and his position rose steadily.

From this perspective, Zang Yuzhu being able to grow up healthy and strong was already quite an achievement.

Tao Ning put the small paper bag back in its place. Unfortunately, she couldn’t find any fever medicine, so she messaged Dr. Howard for help, took the medicine, and lay down to rest.

Having prepared the fruit, the academy teacher placed a basket of fruit in the service robot’s hands, letting it deliver the Mermaid’s meal.

Activating the robot, he watched from the side, feeling a bit apprehensive.

Although he hadn’t personally cared for a Mermaid, he had heard about their sharp claws. He heard that student Zang Yuzhu had been scratched by the Mermaid and almost drowned in the pool, which was why she requested leave.

The Starnet was indeed full of lies, claiming that Mermaids were beautiful and gentle, with enchanting voices, harmless creatures.

Callista, unaware of the rumors and the damage to her reputation, smelled the food from underwater and swam to the surface.

She wondered what kind of excuses that cunning human would come up with today.

Emerging from the water, Callista was faced with the service robot’s round body and its silly face.

    Callista: “?”

Service Robot: “Please enjoy your meal OWO.”

    Callista: “…”

The Mermaid didn’t understand. She looked towards the only living person nearby.

The academy teacher, temporarily acting as a keeper, knew his presentation skills were lacking. He scratched his head, thinking for a long time, before placing the intact fruits on the platter.

Looking at the aesthetically displeasing, haphazardly arranged fruit, Callista had no desire to eat.

She’d rather go hungry than eat something ugly.

Callista, whose taste had been refined by Tao Ning, looked at the academy teacher with a puzzled expression, then at the fruit platter with disdain.

Ugly things remained ugly no matter how many times she looked.

But in the temporary keeper’s eyes, the Mermaid’s gaze was full of sorrow, her eyes shimmering, as if she had a thousand words to say.

If Tao Ning were there, she could interpret at least eight hundred words of complaints from those two glances, not some unspoken yearning.

“Ah, Mermaids not only lure people with their singing, but also with their eyes!” The academy teacher quickly ran away, afraid of being tempted to enter the water.

Some people yearned for Mermaids, while others avoided them like the plague.

The academy teacher had originally belonged to the former group, but after researching, he had become like Lord Ye, who admired dragons from afar but was terrified of them up close.

    Callista, left behind: “…”

She didn’t understand what the person had said, but she understood that the human wouldn’t be appearing today.

Callista was unhappy. She wasn’t done being angry, and this human dared not show up.

She didn’t care, so why should this human?

Glaring at the fruit basket and the silly robot, Callista dove back into the water.

Demonstrating with her actions that she didn’t care either, hmph.

After a good sleep, Tao Ning’s fever had subsided. She got up, ate, and prepared to visit Callista, whom she hadn’t seen for most of the day.

After what happened yesterday, without a proper explanation, and now not showing up, the short-tempered leader would definitely be fuming.

However, Tao Ning didn’t make it. Just after washing up, she ran into An He, who had come to visit.

An He had just finished training and had specifically changed into clean clothes.

Tao Ning looked behind An He and said, “You brought two tails with you?”

An He was puzzled: “Tails? What tails?”

She turned around, and there were indeed two tails hiding not far away.

Since they had been discovered, Song Fangzhou stepped out of her hiding place, dragging a protesting Tina along.

Song Fangzhou said, “I heard you were sick, so I wanted to come and see you.”

Tao Ning: “To see me make a fool of myself?”

Song Fangzhou’s fair face twitched slightly, and she said curtly, “No, I misunderstood you about what happened before. An He explained it to me.”

Tao Ning: “Young lady, you should stick to your convictions.”

She gestured towards the room: “Come in.”

“I…” Song Fangzhou swallowed her words, pulling Tina into the room.

An He was the first to enter, sitting down at the table.

The various medical devices had been removed from the room, making it look like an ordinary student dormitory. Yet, her posture was strangely stiff.

Looking over, Song Fangzhou beside her also looked tense.

So it wasn’t just her who felt nervous. For some reason, she always felt tense in front of Zang Yuzhu after she woke up.

It wasn’t that she hadn’t felt nervous before, perhaps out of a sense of protectiveness towards the weaker individual, she would subconsciously take extra care of her.

But this time, the nervousness seemed different. She couldn’t quite put her finger on it.

An He relaxed slightly, then abruptly stopped.

    No way…

She glanced at Song Fangzhou, who looked back at her quizzically, asking with her eyes, “What?”

Tina reached out to take the glass of water Tao Ning offered: “Thank you. I never thought I’d see the day you’d pour water for someone.”

After saying that, she received two stares.

Tina: “…” I think I said something wrong.

Realizing her mistake, Tina quickly apologized: “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it like that. I meant that I didn’t know you were the type to pour water for others… No, that’s not what I meant either…”

Tao Ning gave her a knowing smile and simply said, “I understand.”

520 thought it might be hallucinating, because what it heard was: “I’ll remember this.”

Tina shut her mouth, like a timid kitten, afraid to make another sound.

Tao Ning held the warm water with both hands, sitting alone, looking at her three former teammates: “Is there something you need?”

Song Fangzhou: “Nothing, just checking in.”

An He: “I heard you were injured, so I came to see you.”

They spoke in unison, their words slightly different, but the underlying meaning was the same.

Tao Ning feigned surprise: “How did I get injured?”

Song Fangzhou glanced at the wrist holding the cup, so pale and translucent it looked like it would break: “You have quite a few injuries.”

Tina, finally finding a topic she could speak on, said, “You don’t know? Everyone’s saying you requested leave because you were injured by the Mermaid. We were worried it was true, so we came to check on you.”

An He continued, “Seeing you safe and sound, we’re relieved that you’re alright.”

Tao Ning understood, letting out an “Ah,” then asking, “Why would such rumors spread?”

Hearing this, Tina became animated, excitedly recounting everything she knew.

Tao Ning, after hearing the whole story: “…”

This was a classic case of a story changing as it’s retold. The young lady’s temper tantrum provoking the Mermaid and getting injured had become being pushed into the water and almost drowning.

Seeing Tao Ning looking at them speechlessly, sitting there unharmed, they knew it was just a rumor.

Tao Ning smiled: “I just slipped and fell into the water. I didn’t expect that’s what people were saying outside. How strange.”

    The three: “…”

They felt Zang Yuzhu was being sarcastic about the rumors, but they had no proof.

After sending them off, Tao Ning headed towards the swimming pool, naturally attracting many curious and surprised glances along the way.

She ignored them all, skillfully entering the password and walking into the swimming pool area.

A pearl came flying towards her. Tao Ning caught it between her fingers and lowered her hand. A figure appeared by the pool.

    Callista said, “You’re slower.”

Tao Ning replied in Mermaid language, “I was sick, so I didn’t come to see you this morning.”

“Sick.” Callista repeated the slightly unfamiliar word. She asked, “What is sick?”

Tao Ning replied, “Being sick is like I was just now, slower and weaker.”

Callista furrowed her brows, her expression full of disdain: “Then being sick isn’t good. I hate being sick too.”

Tao Ning sat down by the pool. Seeing her sluggishness, Callista lost her playful mood and became unusually quiet.

Looking at the full fruit basket, Tao Ning asked, “None of these suit your taste?”

Callista pouted: “They’re piled together so uglily, I don’t want to eat them.”

And that thing that delivered the food was also ugly, making her lose her appetite.

Tao Ning pulled out a butterfly knife from her pocket and cut open a peach, the sweet scent wafting towards the Mermaid’s sensitive nose.

Glancing at the peach in her hand, Callista’s slender fingers closed around the pink fruit, the pink and white contrasting beautifully against the silver blade she wielded with practiced ease.

Callista then said, “But I suddenly have an appetite now.”

Callista, full of anticipation, received the desired peach and even got a peeled apple.

If Callista’s subjects saw this, they would surely think they had mistaken their leader, who would never deign to accept food cut into pieces from another Mermaid.

That was too pampered. Only newborn Mermaids needed help with their food.

Finally satisfied, Callista leaned against the edge of the pool with her elbow and said, “That human didn’t tell me you were sick. I thought you weren’t coming.”

Looking at Callista’s expression, Tao Ning knew that this Mermaid leader had no concept of emotions, her gaze direct and unreserved.

Expecting a Mermaid to develop feelings because of a kiss was indeed a fantasy.

Tao Ning suppressed a slight feeling of disappointment: “I wouldn’t not come. They don’t understand Mermaid language, so they couldn’t tell you.”

That made sense. Callista felt inexplicably irritated: “They’re so stupid, they can’t learn Mermaid language.”

Watching the Mermaid’s tail swishing in the water, Tao Ning felt a little tempted. She sat by the edge and dipped her feet into the water.

It was cool and refreshing, but she quickly pulled her feet back.

Callista watched her actions with a puzzled look, seemingly understanding something: “Did you get sick because you touched the water?”

Tao Ning corrected her: “I got sick because I was submerged in cold water.”

In Callista’s eyes, Tao Ning’s fragility seemed to have increased another level, comparable to a newborn Mermaid. She said, “You shouldn’t be so fragile.”

Tao Ning smiled: “I don’t want to be so fragile either. I wish I were as strong as you.”

Callista shook her head: “That’s not what I meant. Humans can’t be as strong as us.”

Mermaids were natural overlords of the sea. Without their claws that could tear through anything and their powerful tails, they would just be another food source for other sea creatures.

“If that’s not what you meant, then…” Tao Ning suddenly realized something, looking into Callista’s blue eyes, repeating her words, “I shouldn’t be so fragile?”

In front of Callista, Tao Ning placed two fingers on her wrist, feeling her pulse, and pondered for a moment.

The person who had been talking suddenly fell silent, deep in thought while holding her wrist. Callista also reached out and touched her wrist, only feeling the smooth skin, nothing else.

Water droplets from her hand splashed onto Tao Ning’s pale skin. Callista watched for a moment, then remembered that this human was even more fragile than a Mermaid baby, prone to illness from cold water, so she quickly wiped the droplets away with her skirt.

Seeing Tao Ning open her eyes, Callista asked, trying to hide her actions, “What does that gesture mean?”

Tao Ning, who had intended to teach her some basic human knowledge, said, “This is called taking a pulse. We humans can tell a person’s condition from their pulse.”

Having spent a long time in the previous world, Tao Ning had dabbled in everything, including medicine.

Even a medical layman, after spending hundreds of years focused on one thing, would have mastered it.

Callista only half understood. She asked, “So what did you find out?”

Externally strong but internally weak, with blocked meridians. This wasn’t just a result of long-term accumulation, but also half due to external factors. There were trace amounts of toxins in her body.

The dosage wasn’t high, accumulated from long-term ingestion, having a moderate impact on her health, just enough to hinder the development of her psychic sea.

That’s why Zang Yuzhu’s psychic power was only A-level after reaching adulthood.

Compared to others, it wasn’t low, but compared to her biological parents, it was indeed inferior in every aspect.

Tao Ning didn’t hide anything, explaining it to her in a way Callista could understand.

She regretted lying before, so she wouldn’t lie to her now. Besides, Mermaid language wasn’t easy to decipher in a short time, so it didn’t matter if she revealed it.

After listening, Callista nodded seriously: “You are indeed very fragile, I can smell it.”

She pointed at her nose. A Mermaid’s sensitive five senses, especially her sense of smell, could detect almost anything.

Extending her hand towards Tao Ning, Callista said excitedly, “You’re so good at touching, how about you touch me?”

A wrist rested on Tao Ning’s knee, adorned with a pearl bracelet, interspersed with shells and gems she had collected.

Callista had made it herself when she was bored. It wasn’t as refined as human craftsmanship, but it had a unique, wild beauty.

The Mermaid’s webbed claws, capable of tearing through mecha, now rested casually on her knee, seemingly boneless, the red mole on her fingertip prominent.

Staring at the wrist, Tao Ning placed two fingers on it, taking her pulse.

Callista watched Tao Ning’s contemplative face with curiosity, her gaze fixed.

Perhaps because she hadn’t seen many people since coming ashore, this human was indeed the most beautiful she had ever seen, her skin as white as the white gossamer woven by silver Mermaids, and her voice pleasant.

When she opened her eyes, they were like the black pearls she had once collected.

It was a pity she had forgotten where she had put that handful of black pearls. Otherwise, she could compare them now, to see which was brighter, the pearls or her eyes.

Well, her lips were quite soft.

Thinking of this, Callista felt a little regretful.

She knew humans couldn’t be collected like black pearls, and they didn’t like living in the ocean.

Seeing Tao Ning open her eyes, Callista leaned closer and asked curiously, “So?”

  • Transformed into a Female Villain, But Captured by My Beautiful Girl Disciples v2c38

    38. Young Master Kidney Deficiency

The groupings for the second round were similar to the first.

The previously established teams remained largely unchanged, while the lone wolves from the first round formed new teams.

This time, there wouldn’t be any backstabbing. The previous round’s betrayals were apparently too traumatic. Dozens of teams had engaged in psychological warfare with their own teammates.

As a result, many still suffered from teammate PTSD, hoping this round would be less stressful.

After explaining the rules of the second round to her disciples, Gong Yiling immediately launched a series of “training” activities.

Taking them out for meals, watching shadow puppet shows, strolling through the night market, shopping, and so on.

    Yes, pure leisure.

Miss Gong called this her “Double Cheese Happy Training Method.”

She wasn’t worried about facing Shangguan Lingyue.

Qiu Shui’s abilities, although not advantageous in one-on-one duels, were incredibly effective in team battles, especially against a single opponent.

All she needed to do was adjust Qiu Shui’s mentality, allowing her to unleash her full power, gaining valuable experience for the inevitable arena battles later.

Finally, the official competition began on the third day.

“I trust you have all prepared yourselves,”

Shangguan Yaochang announced from the central arena, his speech resembling a pre-battle pep talk.

“Based on the submitted lists, nineteen teams have chosen me, and eleven have chosen Lingyue. The matches will take place simultaneously in two arenas.”

“Those not selected will wait in the designated area until called. Any questions?”

The rules this time were much simpler than the complicated number cards.

Seeing no one asking questions, Shangguan Yaochang instructed the guards to escort the waiting participants to a nearby building.

As soon as she entered, Miss Gong was confronted by Young Master Xuli.

“You’re that bitch who screwed me over at the auction house!”

He had apparently bribed people with money and influence to corner Gong Yiling.

    “Who is this?”

Gong Yiling wasn’t fazed, even wanting to laugh. “Oh, right, isn’t this… Young Master Kidney Deficiency? Is that your name?”

Young Master Xuli almost choked. “Who are you calling kidney deficient!?”

    “Look at you,”

Miss Gong sized him up. “Unsteady gait, sluggish posture, clearly weak in the knees and lacking in vitality. And your sunken eyes, the foul odor, signs of decline… I bet you frequently urinate at night.”

“And you say you’re not Young Master Kidney Deficiency.”

“You…!” His reaction was strange, quickly covering his face with his fan and stammering, “How… how dare you slander me!”

    Huh???

Two question marks almost appeared above Gong Yiling’s head.

His reaction wasn’t one of indignant denial, but of someone whose sore spot had been poked.

    This was interesting.

    “Come here, come closer.”

Gong Yiling beckoned him. “I have something to tell you.”

    The scene became awkward.

Young Master Xuli’s face turned pale, and his entourage didn’t know what to do.

Finally, he said, “Heh, let me see what you’re up to!”

When he approached, Gong Yiling whispered in his ear, “Kidney deficiency has nothing to do with cultivation. Even if you’re at Heavenly Soul realm, you’re still a kidney-deficient Heavenly Soul cultivator.”

    “What!?”

His shocked outburst attracted everyone’s attention.

Noticing their stares, he snapped, “What are you looking at? Shouldn’t you be discussing your strategies? Keep staring, and I’ll gouge your eyes out!”

    His threat silenced them.

He coughed and asked awkwardly, “So… you really think I’m kidney deficient? Am I really?”

—*Why are you asking me if your kidneys are deficient?*

    She almost said it.

“I just see the signs. Hasn’t any physician mentioned it to you?”

    “Who goes to a physician?”

    “Who goes… huh…”

Although Gong Yiling wanted to retort, she didn’t know where to start.

Normal cultivators didn’t see physicians. If they had a problem, they just took more pills…

    Wait!

What normal cultivator suffered from kidney deficiency!?

“You…” she hesitated. “What have you been doing? Normal cultivators don’t get kidney deficient.”

“Uh… does sleeping with six women a day count?”

    “Six women???”

    “…Yeah.”

    “When?”

    “Every day.”

    “Every day!?”

    Holy shit!

This guy was truly impressive. Six women a day? No wonder he was kidney deficient. His nickname was well-deserved.

“If you keep this up, you won’t just be kidney deficient. People will think you’re being used as a cauldron.”

“Without women, what’s the point of cultivating? It’s boring.”

This guy had reached the pinnacle of lower-body thinking.

—Why don’t you just evolve your brain out of existence?

“Find a physician to treat you. Why are you wasting my time?”

“I can’t do that!” Young Master Xuli said, “If people find out I’m kidney deficient, how can I maintain my reputation?”

“Do you have to go yourself? Can’t you use a disguise? Can’t you say ‘a friend of mine’ is kidney deficient?” Miss Gong retorted.

Her three consecutive questions enlightened Young Master Xuli.

“I see.” He nodded thoughtfully. “Then I’ll have my two attendants pretend to be kidney deficient and ask around.”

    *Whatever makes you happy.*

Miss Gong, seeing his expression, had a mischievous glint in her eyes.

This guy wasn’t very bright. Could she scam him again?

  • The Delicate Female Lead Only Wants to be Loved by the Villainous Young Ladies 333

    Chapter 333: Shipped It!

Tang Linlang, returning victorious, received Adele’s admiring gaze as she wished. Of course, she knew that Adele was deliberately putting on a little fan-girl act to amuse her. But Tang Linlang accepted it all. After all, this kind of unspoken understanding was what made life interesting. The two girls walked into the “couples’ theme” experience center, under the envious gazes of everyone around. For the Eastern Capital, where social customs weren’t as open as in the Vampire territory, their actions were considered quite brave.

But Adele’s bravery instantly crumbled when she saw a large spider suddenly descend from the wall. Like a deflated balloon, all her courage escaped with a scream.

    “Ahhh!”

Tang Linlang embraced her and, after a moment of panic, realized it was just a toy spider. The girl couldn’t help but chuckle, feeling that it was different from what she had imagined. Initially, Tang Linlang thought Adele would bravely protect her, and she would just whimper in her arms. Later that night, she could pretend to be shy and use a kiss to stop Adele from teasing her, followed by a wonderful, indescribable night.

But in reality, Tang Linlang felt like she was the calmer one. As for Adele, it was already good enough that she dared to open her eyes during the transition between scenes. However, this gap moe was also very cute. Timid and adorable during the escape room, not even daring to open her eyes, but at night, she would transform into a lustful queen, sending Tang Linlang to cloud nine again and again. Wasn’t that great!?

Tang Linlang seemed to have settled into her submissive role. This was probably related to her personality. Linlang was inherently obedient and passive, while Adele was a cunning, aggressive, and greedy girl.

“Just kidding, welcome, esteemed guests,” a young staff member greeted them.

Adele’s expression said—I don’t find that funny at all!

The staff member, realizing his joke fell flat, laughed awkwardly and began to introduce the experience center’s couple-friendly projects. The first recommendation was naturally the horror haunted house with a beautiful and romantic love story. But Adele didn’t think horror and romance went well together. This was just a script designed to trick couples into spending money!

Next was the puzzle and adventure escape room. This one was more conventional and less scary, but unlike the first one, where couples stayed close together, this escape room had sections where they had to separate.

Finally, there was a fantasy-themed story-driven escape room! It mainly told the story of the emotional entanglement between a vampire and a vampire hunter, requiring players to find a series of clues to piece together the beginning and end of this touching love story.

Tang Linlang’s gaze was immediately fixed on this option. The attentive young staff member asked, “This is our newly launched escape room, would you two like to try it?”

Adele thought for a moment. Compared to the first horror escape room, this one was more acceptable, less scary. And compared to the second pure puzzle-solving one, it was more interesting and engaging. More importantly, Adele clearly saw the interest in Tang Linlang’s eyes! After all, the story of a vampire and a vampire hunter…wasn’t that about her and Tang Linlang!? It would be a pity to miss such a fitting theme.

So Adele readily decided, “We’ll take this one! How much?” Adele was never vague when it came to paying.

“We have several packages. The original price is 399, but we have a special offer at 288, and a premium couple’s experience upgrade package for 599, originally priced at 599.”

    “Which one would you like?”

“Do you have a 998 ‘So Good You Can’t Breathe’ package?”

“Uh…” Adele stunned the staff member. A 998 ‘So Good You Can’t Breathe’ package? That would have to include an overnight stay at a love hotel. But Adele’s suggestion wasn’t bad. The staff member would report it to the boss. They just needed to reach a cooperation agreement with a nearby hotel. After finishing the escape room, they could seamlessly transfer the excited couples to the hotel, opening up a new battlefield.

Adele’s casual remark had actually revealed a great business opportunity.

“Just kidding, the 599 package is fine, Linlang, let’s do this one!” The girl said enthusiastically to the girl beside her.

Tang Linlang blushed, pursed her lips, and softly replied like a shy little woman, “Okay.”

Next, the escape room opened, and Adele and Tang Linlang entered hand in hand. Because it was a story-driven puzzle escape room, it wasn’t really about escaping. Adele and Tang Linlang had to play the roles of a vampire and a vampire hunter respectively, to reenact the story and find a way to break the curse of their forbidden love. The setting was that vampires and vampire hunters couldn’t be together, but if they completed the task, they could be together! There would be some NPCs playing villain roles, and Adele and Tang Linlang needed to use puzzle-solving, intelligence, or other methods to defeat them.

At the starting point, they needed to choose their respective roles. Tang Linlang seemed a bit stunned, as if she hadn’t expected that they needed to choose roles. Adele, on the other hand, looked excited.

“I want to play the vampire hunter!” Hearing this, Tang Linlang instantly blushed. She felt like Adele was implying something… Was this “play” vampire hunter the real kind of “play”? But Adele actually chose to play the “vampire hunter.” This role reversal was quite interesting. After all, Tang Linlang was a descendant of vampire hunters, and Adele was half-vampire, the prototype of a vampire.

The staff members of the experience center probably never imagined that the roles they were playing were fake, but these two were the real deal!

Adele received the weapon representing the vampire hunter, a Desert Eagle made of mithril. Don’t ask why it was a Desert Eagle, it was just cool! As for Tang Linlang, she received the ability of immortality.

The first chapter of the story was set in the Wild West. After a bloody battle, the vampire hunter Adele successfully killed her nemesis and rescued a girl who was being used as blood food by the vampire. But that girl was actually the vampire herself, Adele’s nemesis, the vampire Tang Linlang, known as the Flower of Mourning.

Tang Linlang, playing the vampire, disguised herself as an injured human girl and traveled with Adele. But in reality, she was constantly thinking about regaining her strength and killing the vampire hunter before her. However, the fastest way to regain her strength was to drink blood. And Adele, the powerful vampire hunter…was she the best blood provider? Moreover, did Adele really not notice her vampire identity? Or did she actually know, but was tired of the past hostility, so she pretended to be oblivious, wanting to just…be with Tang Linlang?

This plot, I’m totally shipping it! Adele exclaimed internally.

  • Dear, it’s time for your medicine! 298

Chapter 298: Crushing Jie Luo’s Soul Fragment

    Holy shit!

Qin Chu couldn’t help but curse.

    His lips trembled.

The heart of the Eighth Evil God, the being the gods had sacrificed so much to defeat… it was still beating?

Could that terrifying entity be resurrected?

A shiver ran down his spine. The thought was terrifying.

If he returned, the Heavenly Continent, now lacking its powerful gods, would be annihilated.

“The moment the heart beat, a powerful earthquake erupted.”

    “The pressure reached its peak.”

“Fortunately, he was smart enough to flee.”

“Back in the Imperial City, he found Ekaterina waiting for him at home. The Second Jie Luo wanted to release his fear, but alas, he could only look, not touch… hahaha, serves him right… but that ability is truly terrible… if he hadn’t taken my place, I would have been the unlucky one.”

    Ireta’s voice ceased.

She opened her eyes, returning the soul fragment to Qin Chu. There was nothing more.

As expected, each soul fragment revealed valuable information.

Qin Chu was intrigued by the heart.

Fortunately, the First Jie Luo had recorded its location.

He glanced at Athena and Muse. Their expressions were strange. They didn’t know as much as he did, but they had gleaned some information from Ireta’s words.

Athena’s face was pale: “Master, what was that…?”

“That was a message from the real Jie Luo, hidden deep within the soul fragment,” Qin Chu replied calmly.

    The real Jie Luo?

    Athena’s heart pounded. Muse swayed.

    “Don’t you understand?”

“The First Hero, Jie Luo, the one you all admire, the one summoned by the Heavenly Continent… he was replaced before he even arrived.”

“The one you knew was a demon who stole his body, his true purpose to eliminate the other summoned heroes.”

Qin Chu wanted to see their reactions… Athena’s face paled, her eyes flickering as she tried to determine the truth of his words.

Muse, though swaying, merely smiled coldly.

    “A demon? So what?”

He grinned: “To me, he was Jie Luo. That’s enough.”

Muse didn’t care. Perhaps a demon was even better? A demon could understand him.

This guy’s devotion is truly impressive.

    Qin Chu was almost touched.

In that case, he would grant Muse the most profound, the most terrifying despair.

After all, true cruelty was breaking someone’s spirit.

He walked towards Muse, a strange smile on his face, tossing the ring containing the soul fragment in his hand, drawing Muse’s gaze.

Muse’s eyes followed the fragment, his throat working, his gaze filled with longing.

“This is the soul fragment of your beloved Jie Luo.”

    “Do you want it?”

    Muse’s hand twitched involuntarily.

Seeing Qin Chu’s fingers closing around the fragment, Muse’s eyes widened. Even he, in his current state, understood what Qin Chu intended.

    Terror made him tremble.

All color drained from his face, his grotesque head shaking violently, his voice a near-wail: “No… no, no, no…”

    “Please, don’t do this. Don’t…”

    Qin Chu’s smile widened.

This fool still didn’t understand. Time to enlighten him.

“No… please, I beg you…” Muse, abandoning his usual arrogance, pleaded pathetically.

But Qin Chu’s gaze only grew colder.

He tightened his grip on the soul fragment.

    Crack.

    The fragment shattered.

It crumbled to dust, falling through his fingers.

The dust mixed with the snow, vanishing without a trace.

    “No…”

Muse’s scream was a primal wail of despair.

His weakened legs buckled, and he collapsed to his knees.

Tears, blood, and snot streamed down his face, making his already grotesque features even more repulsive.

Only with all the soul fragments could Jie Luo be resurrected. Now, with one destroyed, his soul could never be whole.

Even when Athena had given the fragment to Qin Chu, a sliver of hope had remained.

But now, even that sliver was gone.

He felt as if his heart had been ripped out. An unbearable agony.

    Despair.

    Grief.

Athena’s face also paled, a sharp pain in her chest, though not as intense as Muse’s.

Muse’s trembling hands scooped up the snow mixed with the fragment’s dust, trying to gather it.

But it was completely destroyed. Putting it back together was impossible.

The odds were lower than the seven Evil Gods suddenly dropping dead.

He began stuffing the snow into his mouth, as if trying to consume the fragment’s dust.

    He didn’t know why.

Perhaps it was a desperate, instinctive act.

His fingers clawed at the ground, even scraping at the ice beneath the snow.

Qin Chu watched him coldly. The more Muse suffered, the greater his pleasure.

    Suffer.

    Savor the pain.

If you don’t suffer, then what’s the point of my revenge?

After a long while, Muse finally collapsed, sobbing uncontrollably, a grown man crying like a child.

His relationship with Jie Luo was different from Benson, Karsus, Sylph, Athena, Loseweisse, or Ronald’s.

His was a pure friendship, born of shared interests. And that made his grief even more profound.

Tears and blood streamed down his face.

His features twisted further, his grief and despair transforming into pure hatred. He looked up at Qin Chu, his bloodshot eyes blazing, his breath coming in ragged gasps.

    “You…”

    “You…”

    “You…”

    “It’s all your fault! Aaaaaah…”

With a chilling scream, his weakened body suddenly surged with strength.

Like a final burst of energy before death.

He grabbed his axe and leaped to his feet, swinging it at Qin Chu’s head.

“You demon! I’ll kill you! Aaaah…”

    “Athena!”

Qin Chu didn’t even move, merely issuing a soft command.

Athena, who had been standing dazed and unresponsive, snapped out of her trance, instinctively raising her staff.

    “Plague!”

    “Accelerated Decay!”

She uttered the words, unfamiliar even to her own ears.

A sickly green mist erupted from her staff, engulfing Muse.

    “Athena, you…”

    Muse’s eyes widened.

He knew she was being controlled.

And that made his despair even deeper.

He knew he was doomed. Even with this final burst of strength, he was no match for the Second Hero.

But dying at Qin Chu’s hands was far preferable to dying at the hands of a former comrade.

Especially one whose soul had been twisted.

He swayed, his newfound strength fading rapidly.

His steps grew heavy and slow, his breath hot, his fever rising, his mind clouding.

The blisters on his skin swelled, bursting one after another.

    His eyes turned grey.

A large lump appeared on his neck.

A piercing pain shot through his head, as if something was pressing against his nerves, his vision darkening.

    Something swelled within his abdomen.

A gurgling sound filled his throat.

    He coughed up dark blood.

Countless diseases seemed to erupt within him, rapidly consuming him, his already broken body deteriorating further.

Qin Chu looked at Athena in surprise.

    What was this power?

He had fought alongside her for years in the first loop and had never seen her use such sinister magic.

He sensed a dark, corrupting energy within it.

  • Miss Luo Yan’s Feet Are Buried With Corpses v3c26

Witch’s Night: Chapter 26 Familiar Weaponry

“The Church of the End Gods is retreating…”

In the Oak Council Chamber, the Elders were surprised to find that almost all the Calamities were disappearing at a speed visible to the naked eye.

And the seemingly endless stream of cultists that kept appearing was also gradually decreasing.

This crisis… seemed to be coming to an end.

Only Norian’s expression remained serious, because Granny Zoya had sent him a private message, saying that not only did these cultists possess combat power above “Destruction” level, but she was also no match for them.

Norian was naturally grateful to this Granny who had protected Lannister for many years.

But he also knew very well that Granny Zoya was just a straggler among “Destruction” level ability users… Basically, whenever she encountered a “Destruction” level opponent, she would be defeated.

Besides Granny Zoya, Lannister still had many trump cards they hadn’t used, but since everything was improving, there seemed to be no need to use them anymore.

But… a “Destruction” level cultist, the thought itself was terrifying. How could Norian relax like the other Elders?

“Magistrate Norian,” Madam Susan Moira said, “Since the crisis has been resolved, please lift the lockdown on the Oak Council Chamber.”

Norian turned and looked deeply at the gray-haired, elderly noblewoman, making Susan Moira feel a little uneasy, before looking away.

    “No, maintain the lockdown.”

“Norian!” As soon as he finished speaking, Kenya slammed the table and stood up, his face full of anger. “I don’t know where your baseless suspicions of the Elders came from. Even if the Ember Formation was invaded, it can’t be concluded that it was the Elders’ doing!

“But now you are repeatedly and deliberately locking down the Council of Elders. Even though the situation in Lannister has been resolved, you still insist on doing this. I have to suspect whether you are colluding with the cult, intending to dismantle the Lannister Council of Elders!”

Norian glanced at Kenya. “Do I need a lockdown to dismantle it?”

    “…”

Kenya was momentarily speechless. He wanted to retort, but he also knew very well that with Norian’s methods, if he wanted to purge dissidents from the Council of Elders, he wouldn’t need such means.

The Constantine rebellion, which had been suppressed decades ago, and the decades of obedience and non-interference in political affairs by the noble families, weren’t achieved through mere words.

Norian didn’t reveal the news of Zoya’s defeat, because he still suspected there was a mole among these Elders, so he just said indifferently,

“Maintain the lockdown and let the younger generation resolve it. Haven’t you always said that the new generation of Lannister is a lost generation? You can see how much potential these young people have.”

He always believed in Lannister’s future; it was just that they hadn’t reached that point in time yet.

    ……

“Norian Hartstead, as expected of the ruthless man who didn’t hesitate to purge his own family during the reforms, he could actually make such a bold decision…”

Hamid Surian’s eyes sharpened slightly as he saw the report sent by his subordinate.

“It seems our fellow traveler in the Council of Elders won’t be able to help us for a while. It’s even more unfortunate that he missed the precious opportunity to hear the oracle.”

“But… Bishop, many of our fellow travelers have died at the hands of the adventurers summoned by Lannister,” the subordinate said with a serious expression. “Even without the support of the Ember Formation, Lannister’s combat power is still not to be underestimated.”

“Don’t worry, everything is under control. The sacrificed fellow travelers have merely returned to the Gods before us.” Hamid Surian said indifferently. “When we strive to fulfill our mission, the Gods will protect us, protect the future of this world.”

He looked into the distance, the starry sky on the horizon dazzling as ever.

A faint melody seemed to be swirling around his ears, and Hamid Surian couldn’t help but close his eyes, carefully feeling the stirrings brought by this melody.

“Listen, Eli, listen to this beautiful melody, it’s the call of the Gods,” Hamid Surian whispered, each word seemingly reciting something. “Our Gods, the ten guardians of the world, Their path still extends, the fleeting years of mortals are but a moment, but the world needs eternity.”

“I… I hear it! Bishop, is this the voice of the Gods?”

Eli’s body trembled slightly, not only with excitement, but also with a hint of fear.

The followers of the Church of the End Gods were also mortals, and once mortals came into contact with such incomprehensible existences… they would feel uncontrollable fear.

“No, this is our most esteemed guest showcasing her singing voice.” Hamid Surian looked towards the building not far away, the dilapidated residential building where he had lived for decades, his eyes shining with unusual brilliance. “How pleasant… I can’t wait any longer, what oracle have the Gods brought us?”

He started walking, and his subordinate, Eli, followed closely, his expression inevitably nervous.

Eli was just an ordinary follower. Being brought by Hamid to listen to the oracle was purely coincidental.

Many followers were active in this area; their duty was to relay information to other followers when communication through the Ember Formation was impossible.

Eli encountering Hamid was just good luck. Since they had met, Hamid didn’t hesitate to invite Eli to participate in this historic moment.

However, within the Church of the End Gods, there wasn’t actually any hierarchy. Even the Bishop was also called a fellow traveler.

Because in a world destined for destruction, identity and status were meaningless.

The reason Hamid was called Bishop was because he could provide more help for the Gods’ mission, and the same was true for the other Bishops.

The title of “Bishop” was more like a responsibility they bore.

Their steps seemed slow, but in just a few strides, they reached the residential building.

Hamid didn’t rush to the second floor where Luo Yan was. Although his yearning for the oracle was hard to contain, he wasn’t in a hurry.

The hopeless wait had lasted for hundreds of years, so what was a little while longer?

One had to be pious, not only for the Gods, but also for oneself.

But when Hamid and Eli arrived at the doorway with a mixture of excitement, nervousness, and forced calmness, they were dumbfounded.

    “This… Bishop?”

Eli looked at the empty doorway, stunned.

When the Bishop had gathered the followers to discuss the operation, he had also been to this inconspicuous residential building in the bustling city.

But at that time, there was a door…

“Our guest seems… a bit rough.”

Hamid, as expected of a knowledgeable, centuries-old man, quickly regained his composure despite the unexpected situation.

Just a demolished door, no need to panic.

Although the demolition was a bit… uh… peculiar?

The door, severed by a spatial rift, formed a perfectly round hole, even taking out a corner of the wall next to it.

If only the guest had been willing to turn the doorknob. Because of the barrier, the door of the residential building had never been locked… Hamid thought so, stepping into the residential building with an indifferent expression.

Eli hurriedly followed, still looking back at the large hole in the wall with lingering fear.

Destroying a door wasn’t difficult, but the question was, what kind of power was needed to destroy it to this extent…

“There are traces of the barrier being triggered, but this barrier isn’t a threat to our guest.” Hamid observed the surroundings and said with a hint of appreciation. “She’s very smart, she didn’t touch the truly dangerous parts of the barrier.”

    “Bishop, what barrier?”

    Eli asked, puzzled.

“The fact that Cecilia possesses divine power… shouldn’t be a secret.” Hamid exhaled, his mood complicated when he mentioned the name. “This barrier is constructed using the divine power emanating from her, and this entire residential building is enveloped in her power.”

Using the method of enhancing demonic power to counteract its erosion, this approach, whether in theory or in practice, was quite insane.

Especially on a young child. A single mistake could lead to instant death, and even the Gods couldn’t save her.

The best way to maintain balance was… to use external objects.

Hamid had infiltrated this residential building decades ago and turned it into the Lannister base of the Church of the End Gods, carrying out large-scale modifications.

Although it looked ordinary from the outside, the inside had completely changed.

The sturdy walls could withstand “Peril” level attacks, and the entire building was filled with the Gods’ runic circuits, capable of self-healing when damaged.

This was no longer a house, but a refined artifact.

Cecilia was now connected to this artifact in some way. The artifact was filled with the raging power emanating from her, bearing the cost of the imbalance for her.

And this overflowing divine power was collected and utilized by Hamid. The barrier on the first floor was just a part of it.

“In short, Cecilia is very important to me, in every sense… it’s true.”

Hamid’s eyes dimmed slightly. At the same time, they had arrived at the staircase.

The melody in their ears had faded away at some point, but the stirrings brought by the aura of the Gods lingered.

Hamid collected his thoughts, straightened his clothes, and his expression became solemn.

He lifted his foot and walked up the stairs step by step, each step filled with piety and faith, like a pilgrimage to the second floor.

Eli, walking behind him, couldn’t help but feel reverence as he looked at the Bishop’s aged yet grand figure.

Yes, this was their Bishop, the one who revealed the truth, leading the followers and human civilization towards their destined destruction, one of the three Bishops of the Church of the End Gods, Hamid Surian.

Just looking at this figure, one could feel the Bishop’s greatness.

As Eli was still immersed in this pious atmosphere, still gazing at Hamid’s back, he suddenly saw a sack fall from the sky and land directly on Hamid’s head.

Accompanied by several light and pleasant voices, these voices were clearly saying…

“Hey! Miss Luo Yan, I caught him!”

    “Mm.”

    “Um, Grandpa Bishop…”

    ……

Time rewound to a short while ago.

“Are you saying… human experimentation?” Chris’s eyes widened, staring at the timid Cecilia. “She’s an experimental subject?”

“Yes, that’s right.” Luo Yan nodded. “She is indeed a God’s Chosen, but not a normal one.”

“Grandpa Bishop seems to have said that Cecilia is a God’s Chosen or something…”

Cecilia cautiously peeked out and said weakly, “But, God of Hope, aren’t all God’s Chosen bestowed by you?”

“First of all, I am not the God of Hope, and secondly, your God of Hope can’t bestow this kind of power. It’s innate, completely belonging to you.”

Luo Yan squatted down and carefully explained to Cecilia.

    “But Grandpa Bishop said…”

“Let’s put aside your Grandpa Bishop for now; we’re talking about your situation.”

Luo Yan had a headache. This little girl named Cecilia mentioned Grandpa Bishop in every other sentence. It seemed the cult’s brainwashing was quite effective.

    “Oh.”

    Cecilia nodded seriously, becoming obedient.

Mainly because Grandpa Bishop had said to listen to the Gods.

The God of Hope was also a God, so Cecilia would be obedient.

    “You said she’s not normal…”

Chris looked at the sickly girl who kept shrinking back. “What’s not normal?”

Luo Yan didn’t answer immediately. She hesitated for a moment, blocked Cecilia’s hearing, and then said,

“A normal God’s Chosen, in her situation, should already be dead.”

    “Hmm?”

Chris was about to make a surprised expression, but quickly controlled herself.

    “Why?”

She whispered, her gaze falling on the trembling Cecilia.

“The demonic power she possesses is probably… at ‘Peril’ level.”

Before Chris could show a shocked expression, Luo Yan continued,

“But her body simply can’t withstand demonic power of that intensity. If she were a normal God’s Chosen, she would already be dead in this situation.”

“So… she’s still alive now because of that Bishop?” Chris pondered for a moment and said, “Although it seems inappropriate for me to say this given my identity, but from the looks of it, this Bishop is actually a good person… at least to her.”

“No, think about it, how could a girl of this age possess ‘Peril’ level power?” Luo Yan said in a deep voice. “The only explanation is that the reason her power is so strong is because of the Bishop’s deliberate actions.

“Powerful, unstable power, suppressed in some way from acting up, and once the restriction is lifted, it will completely lose control… Doesn’t that sound familiar?”

    “Ice, Ice Coffin Weapon?”

    Chris murmured in disbelief.

  • After Failing to Find Immortality 230

Chapter 230: Hidden Schemes, A Sudden Arrival

Several burly men entered the room and stood guard by the door, their expressions stern and imposing, like gatekeepers. Their sudden appearance startled the maid, who instinctively took a step back.

A middle-aged man with graying temples followed them, dressed in an embroidered official robe, his face stern and commanding, radiating an aura of authority.

Cheng Yishi, as if anticipating their arrival, smiled faintly and curtsied. “Greetings, Governor.”

    “You recognize me?”

The middle-aged man’s lips curled into a slight smile, his eyebrows raised in curiosity.

“There have been many visitors to our county lately. I’ve naturally heard of your arrival, Governor.”

Cheng Yishi replied calmly. “And in this Ascension Immortal Restaurant, only someone of your stature would command such a presence. Others wouldn’t dare to approach this private room.”

    “You’re quite observant.”

The governor nodded slightly, his eyes scanning her discreetly. “There’s no need for formalities. I came here out of curiosity, to see the famed beauty of Changling.”

His eyes widened slightly, a look of admiration on his face. “And the rumors are true. You’re truly captivating, Miss Cheng.”

Although she wasn’t dressed in luxurious attire, just a simple yet elegant robe and a fur shawl, her beauty was undeniable, her figure graceful and slender, her face as flawless as jade, her aura ethereal and otherworldly.

    And most importantly…

Her demeanor was captivating, her every movement radiating a unique charm, despite her youth.

No wonder he had heard her name mentioned so often since arriving in Changling County.

Such beauty was rare, even in the entire Xima Prefecture.

    The governor understood now.

No wonder Prince Pei’s son, known for his refined taste and gentle nature, was interested in a commoner. Faced with such beauty, no man could resist. And he had heard that Miss Cheng was also intelligent and capable, single-handedly managing her family’s business after her father’s death.

Such an accomplished woman, to be chosen by the prince… it was a good match.

“You flatter me, Governor. Those are just rumors.” Cheng Yishi lowered her eyes and curtsied slightly. “There are many women in Changling more beautiful than I am. This ‘first beauty’ title is just an exaggeration.”

    “Your humility is commendable.”

The governor nodded approvingly. “I didn’t come here to exchange pleasantries, Miss Cheng. I came to offer you some advice. You’re an intelligent woman. You can see through the rumors and gossip in this town, discerning truth from falsehood.

Don’t let this opportunity slip away. It’s a blessing, a gift from fate.”

He gestured to the two burly men beside him, who stepped forward and opened the numerous boxes they were carrying.

A dazzling array of jewels, precious herbs, silk, and even gold, glittered before them.

“Please accept these small gifts, Miss Cheng. I know you’re not interested in material wealth, but your family needs support. Consider this a small token of my goodwill.”

But Cheng Yishi just glanced at the treasures and said calmly, “Thank you for your kindness, Governor, but I can’t accept your gifts. I’m afraid I can’t fulfill your expectations.”

The governor frowned. “What do you mean?”

    “I—”

    “Fancy meeting you here, Xue.”

A deep voice, laced with amusement, suddenly interrupted them.

    “Hmm?”

The governor’s expression changed, and he turned around to see a familiar figure approaching.

    “Stop him!”

The burly men stepped forward, blocking the newcomer’s path.

But the governor quickly waved them away. “Stand down! Let him pass!”

    “Huh?”

The guards were surprised by his sudden outburst.

But they obeyed without question, stepping aside.

The man at the door entered the private room. It was an elderly man with a white beard, his demeanor refined and scholarly. He smiled and stroked his beard. “It’s been a while, Xue. You’ve become quite the mature man.”

The governor took a deep breath.

He bowed deeply and respectfully. “Master, I didn’t know you were here. I apologize for not visiting you sooner.”

“There’s no need for such formalities. I don’t care about such trivial matters.”

    Master?!

Everyone in the room was startled.

    “Elder Nie?”

Cheng Yishi’s eyes widened in surprise.

This elderly man was Nie Qingyuan, Lin Tianlu’s neighbor. Although she knew he was a scholar from a respectable family, and had held a prominent position in his youth, she hadn’t expected him to be… the governor’s teacher?!

“Miss Cheng, it’s been a while. You’ve become even more beautiful.”

Nie Qingyuan smiled and stroked his beard. “When Master Lin returns to Changling, you should spend some time with him.”

“Y-yes, Elder Nie.” Cheng Yishi quickly curtsied.

The governor’s eyes flickered, his face a mixture of excitement and nostalgia. “Master, have you been living here all these years?”

“Changling is my hometown. Where else would I spend my retirement?”

Nie Qinghe sighed. “It’s been so many years, Xue. You’ve changed. You’re not as carefree and mischievous as you used to be.”

    “Master…”

The governor was speechless, a deep sigh escaping his lips, his heart filled with memories and regrets.

“It seems your career hasn’t been easy.”

“Indeed, Master.” He bowed his head and sighed. “I was full of youthful ambition, but reality is harsh. The compromises, the betrayals… it’s exhausting. I’ve realized that my dreams were just illusions. And your teachings, Master, they’ve become even more profound and meaningful with time.”

“It’s good that you’ve gained such wisdom.”

Nie Qingyuan chuckled. “We should catch up when we have time, Xue. Share our stories. If you’re still troubled by anything, I can offer you some guidance.”

The governor’s eyes lit up with joy, tears welling up. He bowed deeply. “Thank you, Master!”

    “You’re still so sentimental…”

“I-I just haven’t seen you in so long, Master. Please forgive my outburst.” The governor wiped his eyes and chuckled. “But I’m so happy to see you again, even if it means shedding a few tears.”

    “…”

The guards standing nearby were astonished.

They had never seen their usually stoic and reserved governor so emotional.

“But before we reminisce, there’s something I need to discuss with you, Xue.”

Nie Qingyuan’s expression turned serious. “Do you know a scholar named Lin Tianlu?”

    “Lin Tianlu?”

The governor paused. “I just arrived in Changling today. I’ve heard his name mentioned. He seems to be quite talented. But I heard he’s been away for a while.”

“He and Miss Cheng here are in love.”

    “What?”

The governor’s brow furrowed, and he turned to Cheng Yishi. “Is this true?”

Cheng Yishi sighed. “Elder Nie is right. Master Lin and I are in love.”

    “But the prince—”

The governor stopped abruptly, his eyes narrowing.

Prince Pei’s son had been visiting the Cheng residence frequently. He couldn’t possibly be unaware of this.

And yet, knowing that she was in love with another man, he had continued to pursue her?

    Was it simply admiration?

    Impossible.

Prince Pei’s son was known for his gentle nature and refined character. He had never been involved in any scandals and was still unmarried. He wouldn’t try to steal another man’s lover, not so publicly.

    No, something wasn’t right.

The governor quickly realized the disparity in their social status.

How could the Cheng family dare to publicize their relationship with Master Lin, knowing that the prince’s son was interested in her? And how would the common people dare to gossip about it? If she dared to reject the prince, the consequences would be severe.

In just a few moments, countless thoughts raced through the governor’s mind, his expression turning grim.

“Miss Cheng, what are your intentions?”

Cheng Yishi glanced at Nie Qingyuan, whose expression was serious, then replied calmly, “I have no interest in the prince, nor do I desire wealth or power. I just want this situation to be resolved peacefully. I wish he would leave me alone.”

    “So that’s how you feel.”

The governor’s voice was filled with surprise. “Then why didn’t you—”

“Openly defying him would only put me and my family in danger.”

Cheng Yishi said calmly, “I’m just a commoner. I can’t afford to offend someone so powerful. Sometimes, silence is the best course of action. Any resistance would only make things worse.”

Of course, there was more to it than that.

But there was no point in revealing her connection to the supernatural.

    “You’re… a very intelligent woman.”

    The governor sighed in admiration.

For an ordinary woman to remain so calm and composed in the presence of royalty, to resist the advances of a prince… it was truly remarkable.

How many women could resist the allure of wealth and power?

“Xue, I came here for you as well.”

Nie Qingyuan’s voice broke the silence. “Although Master Lin has no official title or noble lineage, he’s a good friend of mine. I can’t just stand by and watch as his future wife is taken from him by force.

I don’t know what that prince is thinking, but perhaps you, Xue, with your connections and influence, can help resolve this situation. There’s no need for a direct confrontation. Just whisper a few words in his ear, perhaps even some… unflattering rumors. As long as he loses interest in Miss Cheng, it will be enough.”

    “I…”

The governor hesitated. “I’ll try, Master. But I can’t guarantee that he’ll listen.”

Cheng Yishi’s eyes flickered, and she said softly, “If you can help us, Governor, perhaps…”

“It seems you have quite a lively gathering here, Miss Cheng.”

A cheerful voice suddenly interrupted them.

Everyone in the room froze, turning to look towards the door.

The handsome prince stood there, a gentle smile on his face, his fan swaying gently. “Governor Xue, I didn’t expect to see you here.”

    “Your Highness—”

“There’s no need for formalities. I didn’t bring my entourage, and this has nothing to do with my father. Just call me Pei Yan.”

The prince waved his hand dismissively.

Then he turned to Cheng Yishi, his eyes curious. “Are you enjoying the food, Miss Cheng?”

    “It’s fine.”

Cheng Yishi’s response was curt and indifferent.

    “I’m glad you like it.”

Pei Yan smiled brightly, then glanced at Nie Qingyuan. “And who is this gentleman—?”

“He’s my teacher, Your Highness. A brilliant scholar, a true master.” The governor answered quickly.

    “I see.”

Pei Yan nodded, then gestured towards the seats. “Please, have a seat. I’ve been socializing for a while now, and I’m quite tired. It would be nice to relax and chat with you all.”

He walked towards Cheng Yishi, his smile warm and inviting. “Please have a seat, Miss Cheng. You must be tired from standing.”

Cheng Yishi’s expression remained unchanged as she discreetly tried to avoid his outstretched hand.

But Pei Yan’s face suddenly paled.

Because a hand had grabbed his wrist.

He turned to see a stranger standing beside him.

    “Who are—”

    Bang!

Before he could finish speaking, a fist connected with his face, sending him flying backwards, blood spraying through the air!

    “…”

    “You asked… who I am?”

Lin Tianlu calmly dusted off his sleeve. “I am… a warrior of love.”

  • My Girlfriend is a Cold and Aloof Sickly Beauty 65

Chapter 65: She Would Hold Her Tight

After a morning of classes, Jiang Xue realized she had underestimated Xiao Luohan.

When encountering a class she didn’t understand, Xiao Luohan would find something else to do and focus on it for the entire class, neither disturbing Jiang Xue nor getting distracted.

As for liberal arts subjects like Chinese, English, and history, even if Xiao Luohan couldn’t keep up with their pace, she could still grasp a clear understanding of the course content by listening to the lectures.

After looking at Xiao Luohan’s notes, Jiang Xue felt that she didn’t seem like a student at all, but more like a trainee teacher observing a class!

However, after the “Crown Prince assassination” incident, she could understand why Xiao Luohan was so different from them.

They had both learned how to use a gun from Uncle Seuss, but she had learned it to teach Xiao Luo, while Xiao Luo had learned it to kill the Crown Prince. If she couldn’t kill him quickly, she herself might be the one who died.

Xiao Luo, despite lacking a sense of security, had a much stronger sense of danger than she did.

Under these two invisible pressures, her thirst for knowledge… no, perhaps it was her “survival instinct” that drove Xiao Luo to find the best shortcut to reach the peak.

—This was a situation she couldn’t change no matter how much she tried to persuade her. It was up to Xiao Luo to figure it out and overcome it herself. Moreover, for Xiao Luo, it probably wasn’t the time to completely relax and “move on.”

But since Jiang Xue had noticed, she couldn’t just ignore it.

She couldn’t solve this alone. She still had Xie Xitong.

She always went to the cafeteria with Xie Xitong for lunch. Today, with Xiao Luo joining them, the three walked side by side. Although it was their first time, it felt as natural as if they did this every day.

However, this naturalness might also be because Xie Xitong deliberately walked on one side, with Jiang Xue in the middle, so she could talk to either of them.

“Today is Xiao Luo’s first time ‘eating in the cafeteria.’ Should we go to the window and order dishes, or have noodles?” Xie Xitong asked as they approached the cafeteria entrance.

Xiao Luohan asked in surprise, “Noodles? Old Cat Noodle Shop?”

She remembered reading in the diary that Jiang Xue and Xie Xitong were regulars at this noodle shop, and the beef noodles she had eaten were also from there.

After receiving confirmation, she nodded readily. “I like noodles for lunch.”

As soon as the three arrived at the window, they saw the dairy cow cat owned by the shop owner lying in its special nest, its belly rising and falling as it slept soundly.

“You’re here? What would you like to eat?” The owner, having just served a bowl of beef noodles, turned to them with a smile. “Oh, you’ve brought a new girl.”

“Xiao Luo is a distant relative of mine. She just came back from abroad and will be attending school with me.” Jiang Xue gave a brief introduction. “She’ll have a bowl of clear soup beef noodles, uh… as for the garlic chives and cilantro…”

“A little bit of both is fine,” Xiao Luohan said.

While the owner was preparing their noodles, Xiao Luohan’s gaze naturally fell on the sleek and shiny dairy cow cat, then, not wanting to disturb its sleep, she quickly looked away, her gaze landing on the various condiments.

“The pickled radish, fermented chili, and chili oil are all homemade by the owner,” Jiang Xue said, taking a small dish and scooping a large spoonful of light pink pickled radish. “Pickled radish helps cut through the richness. You can also try the two types of chili if you’re interested, but they’re really spicy.”

Before she could finish, Xiao Luohan saw Xie Xitong scoop a large spoonful of fermented chili and then cover the other half of the small dish with chili oil.

“…Don’t follow her example, A-Xi can practically eat chili peppers as a vegetable!” Jiang Xue quickly explained.

Xiao Luohan nodded, took a small amount of fermented chili, added a few drops of chili oil, and went to find a seat with her small dish.

“Before you came, we would sit there and send you noodles,” Jiang Xue whispered, taking advantage of the smaller crowd, and pointed in a direction.

“You went through so much trouble,” Xiao Luohan lowered her head and was about to bow when Xie Xitong stopped her.

“Don’t worry about it, we were just having fun!” Xie Xitong said with a smile. “One keeping watch, the other delivering food, it was quite interesting!”

“Yes, yes, we treated it as a daily activity!” Jiang Xue quickly agreed, hoping this reason would prevent Xiao Luo from dwelling on the favor.

She had considered whether to simply not mention the things she had done for Xiao Luo, but thinking of Xiao Luo’s sensitive nature, she was afraid that if she didn’t mention them, Xiao Luo would just keep them in her heart, letting them snowball into a “mountain of gratitude.”

She really felt that she hadn’t done much for Xiao Luo, just ordinary, everyday things, which shouldn’t become a burden for her.

Because of this, she still decided to tell Xiao Luo, one by one, that her presence had simply become a part of their lives, and they had helped her because they wanted her to be well.

Xiao Luohan vaguely understood what they meant, but understanding was one thing, and being grateful for their kindness and wanting to repay them was another.

However, repaying kindness was also an ordinary thing. She would find opportunities and do it gradually.

—For now, she just needed to enjoy her noodles.

The clear soup beef noodles at Old Cat Noodle Shop were light but flavorful. Xiao Luohan never got tired of them, and today, with the pickled radish and chili, they tasted even better.

Unfortunately, the portion was too large. Perhaps seeing how thin she was, the owner had given her more noodles than Jiang Xue and the others had sent before.

Even a normal portion was too much for Xiao Luohan to finish. In the ancient world, she would share with Shizhu. Now, looking at the half-bowl of noodles left, she felt a little troubled.

“Do you… mind if I take some of your noodles?”

She suddenly heard Jiang Xue ask, then Xie Xitong added, “A-Xue gets hungry quickly, sometimes she even takes some of my noodles!”

“Yes, yes!” Jiang Xue nodded repeatedly, putting on an embarrassed expression.

So the remaining noodles ended up in Jiang Xue’s bowl.

Jiang Xue felt that this wasn’t the most elegant solution, but it was probably the best way for Xiao Luohan to give her the leftover food without feeling burdened.

She breathed a sigh of relief as she ate the noodles, and it wasn’t until she finished and met Xie Xitong’s almost “knowing smile” that she suddenly realized what a strange choice she had made.

“We’re family, we’re family…” she repeated in her mind. “There’s nothing wrong with family members eating each other’s leftovers…”

That was fine, but on the way back to the classroom, she heard Xie Xitong whisper in her ear, “Incorrect program execution, but correct result~”

    Jiang Xue: …

Correct my foot! Wouldn’t this be misunderstood by Xiao Luo?!

She was about to glare back when she heard Xiao Luohan say regretfully, “That cat is sleeping so soundly, I wonder if I’ll be able to pet it next time.”

“You want to pet it?” Jiang Xue immediately turned to her. “Just tell the owner next time, and you can go in and pet it directly. It’s an old cat and a light sleeper. It’s actually pretending to be asleep most of the time. If someone pets it, it’ll wake up immediately.”

“But it’s very aloof,” Xie Xitong added. “Even if it enjoys being petted, it’ll deliberately act resistant.”

“It seems like it doesn’t want to acknowledge you, but if you really leave, it’ll peek and look for you.”

This was the experience they had accumulated petting the dairy cow cat since high school.

Xiao Luohan suddenly understood. “Its personality is very different from Xixi’s.”

The large white cat was very clingy, even rubbing against people while complaining, and would immediately run away from people it didn’t like. It was very straightforward.

“Of course, Xixi has been with us since it was a kitten. It can be said that it was spoiled by our whole family. Even when it’s angry, it still likes being close to humans.” Mentioning her cat, Xie Xitong became serious. “But the old dairy cow cat is different. The owner found it as a stray near a trash can. It had a hard life before becoming a house cat.”

“Cats and dogs actually have a period that’s most suitable for ‘socialization.’ If they’re not treated well during that period, or if something bad happens to them, it’s difficult for them to truly trust and be close to humans later on.”

The speaker was unintentional, but both listeners, because of the difference in the cats’ personalities, thought of people.

Especially Jiang Xue, who had been wanting to discuss with Xie Xitong how to help Xiao Luo relax.

But after hearing this explanation, Jiang Xue suddenly felt that there was no need to do anything extra.

Since Xiao Luo lacked a sense of security, she just needed to be there for her as much as possible when she needed care and encouragement.

She just needed to hug her, be her support, and give her enough warmth to dispel her fear when she felt discouraged.

Xiao Luo wanted to grow into a strong and independent person, so she would be the support she needed during her growth.

This was simple. It was like when you first brought a stray cat home, you had to let it adapt to the environment. During this time, the stray cat might hiss at people or refuse to eat, but as long as it felt safe, it would naturally come out of hiding and accept the kindness of its adopter.

Having made up her mind, Jiang Xue felt her steps become firmer.

They parted ways at the bottom of the teaching building. Xie Xitong returned to the classroom for her lunch break, while Jiang Xue took Xiao Luohan to the library to get her textbooks and workbooks.

According to the rules, each registered student had two opportunities to receive free books. If they lost them again, they would have to pay.

Jiang Xue had always cherished her textbooks, so she gave both free opportunities to Xiao Luohan.

Before the lunch bell rang, she helped Xiao Luohan get all the required and elective textbooks and workbooks for Chinese and history, from freshman to senior year.

The librarian had never seen this before, but she was busy and didn’t bother asking why. After registering, she even gave them a plastic bag to carry the books.

Jiang Xue instinctively wanted to carry the books herself, but Xiao Luohan took the other end of the plastic bag first.

“I also want to try and build up my strength,” Xiao Luohan explained. “Can I carry it with you?”

Her frailty manifested in various aspects. Since she had arrived in an era with good medical care, she wanted to gradually regain the physical strength of a normal person.

“Sure, just tell me if you get tired,” Jiang Xue didn’t refuse, taking the other end of the bag.

She deliberately slowed down, walking towards the classroom with Xiao Luohan, stopping every now and then to rest for ten or twenty seconds.

“You learn things so fast!” she couldn’t help but exclaim when they reached a secluded spot. “Understanding the system makes it easier to comprehend why certain events happen at each stage, and why it’s necessary to move on to the next stage.”

“You flatter me. I owe it all to your textbooks,” Xiao Luohan said. “I treated them like storybooks. Perhaps it was ‘subconscious learning,’ so when I actually started studying them, it wasn’t that difficult.”

    Jiang Xue: …

Xiao Luo, who treated textbooks like storybooks, was strangely endearing.
