    Mistaken Era – Chapter 17

It belatedly dawned on Xiaoxiao – he knew that creature would be venomous, yet he didn’t warn her, which was rather… unbecoming of him.

But in the end, he did step in to save her, so she should still thank him.

At this moment, however, the purple-eyed man said, “Miss, please forgive me…”

Saying this, he picked up the still mostly immobilized Cui Xiaoxiao and submerged her in the clear water to help dissipate the venom more quickly.

Fortunately, she had only inhaled the serpent’s toxic mist. If directly bitten and the venom entered her bloodstream, it would have been much harder to treat.

The burning sting Cui Xiaoxiao felt earlier subsided significantly once immersed in the water.

Once able to move, she swam toward the deeper pooled area where the streams converged, using the water to rinse off residual toxic mist and egg fluids from her body.

However, this thorough rinse left her clothes soaked through, clinging to her skin… She looked up to find the young man was still watching her, so she couldn’t help but say, “Sir, could you please turn around?”

The man raised an eyebrow, slowly turning away as he sat on a large boulder sharpening his sword. He also took an outer garment from his bundle and tossed it behind him to Cui Xiaoxiao.

During this, he continually examined the Soul-Sealing Talisman Xiaoxiao had used, his long fingers slowly tracing back and forth along the intricate lines of the talisman script.

Those long, powerful fingers moved with an almost hypnotic quality that left Cui Xiaoxiao’s mouth feeling inexplicably dry as she watched.

Not wanting to look at him further, Xiaoxiao emerged from the stream, silently chanting an incantation to shake the water from her body. Seeing her tattered outer jacket was no longer wearable after being torn by the bushes, she put on the garment the man had given her.

Seeing him still examining her talisman, she casually asked, “What’s that? Are you also interested in talismans? Oh right, since you also cultivate, which path do you practice?”

The man seemed to gauge that she had finished dressing, only then slightly turning his head, his face in profile as thin lips curved in self-mockery. “I practice an unorthodox path, having never joined any formal sect… Besides, in this vast world, there may be no one willing to accept me as a disciple.”

Xiaoxiao disliked his self-deprecating tone, so she casually asked further, “How so? Is it because you lack virtuous conduct, which is why no one would accept you?”

It was only then that the man finally looked directly at Xiaoxiao – this skinny young lady now wearing his oversized outer garment, constantly rolling up the too-long sleeves looking like a little girl trying on adult clothes…

A slight but sincere smile played on his lips, yet he stated in an even tone, “My origins are inauspicious, and my bloodline is impure. Reputable sects would never accept someone like me…”

Seeing the faint purple luminance in his eyes, Cui Xiaoxiao guessed he likely had some foreignblood lineage. From this perspective, he was also from humble roots, not unlike her own drifter childhood.

Except her luck was a bit better in the end, encountering her master Tang Youshu who guided her onto the righteous path of cultivation.

Recalling her master’s kindness in taking her in, Cui Xiaoxiao felt rather pensive as she half-jokingly, half-consolingly said, “What does a lowly birth matter? Since ancient times, the path to immortality makes no class distinctions. If one attains the Dao, even dogs and chickens can ascend to heaven. Your skills seem quite good, and you don’t lack talent either. How can you be so self-deprecating? If no one else will accept you, then just take me as your master and join my Linshan Talisman Sect!”

Hearing this, a glimmer of surprise seemed to flicker in the man’s eyes. After a slight pause, he self-mockingly said, “If your master saw someone like me, he likely wouldn’t dare accept me either…”

Cui Xiaoxiao rarely had such an opportunity to show off – as the head of her sect, she did have the prerogative to freely accept disciples.

“My master has long since ascended. It is I who now oversees the Linshan Talisman Sect. If you take me as your master, I will accept you and make you a third-generation senior disciple!”

Cui Xiaoxiao’s keen eyes had already spotted the glint of gold within the man’s bundled pouch, filling her with a tinge of envy at his apparent wealth.

Her master’s Gold Dissipation Curse had yet to be resolved, and now she found herself stranded in this forsaken place with no idea when she could reunite with her senior martial brothers.

If she could recruit a disciple untroubled by a Gold Curse and lacking no material wealth, that would truly be an auspicious blessing!

Xiaoxiao had promised her master to reform and stop her thieving ways. But if a disciple made offerings, she could rightly accept and make use of them.

However, Xiaoxiao didn’t truly harbor fantasies of actually taking this man as a disciple. Her intuition told her this man was anything but simple, and his skills likely surpassed her own. How could he possibly randomly take her as his master? After all, the Talisman Sect was quite unrenowned and incapable of nurturing great talents.

Her offer of accepting him as a disciple was merely a flippant remark.

Yet this exceptionally handsome man seemed to take Xiaoxiao’s words seriously. His purple eyes partially obscured by loose strands of black hair, one couldn’t tell what he was thinking before he finally looked up with a smile toward Xiaoxiao.

“Since the Linshan Talisman Sect is willing to take in someone as destitute as myself, how can I fail to recognize such grace? In that case, I accept you as my master. Please allow your disciple to pay respects…”

Saying this, he truly knelt down on one knee and bowed three times toward Cui Xiaoxiao.

Though Xiaoxiao had casually joked about taking him as a disciple, more to console the man over his uncertain future prospects, she never expected he would respond so earnestly by immediately kowtowing in acceptance.

She had intended to take it back, but the man had already risen and was respectfully addressing her as “Master.”

…Well, taking on a new disciple didn’t cost any money, so what was there to lose? If the Talisman Sect wished to expand, it needed to branch out.

This man’s skills were decent. Once her three senior martial brothers reached the rank to take their own disciples, there would be someone to carry on their heroic deeds of hunting rabbits and fowl!

Thinking this, Cui Xiaoxiao let out an awkward laugh before offering some customary words of encouragement, then casually asked, “Oh right, I don’t know this disciple’s name yet!”

The young man also smiled at his new young master as he enunciated each word clearly, “Your disciple’s surname is Wei, given name Jie!”

Cui Xiaoxiao had been about to compliment how resounding and auspicious such a name would be for revitalizing the Talisman Sect. But the smile gradually froze on her face.

“Wei… Jie? What exact ‘Wei’ and ‘Jie’ characters are those?”

Her new Talisman Sect disciple casually picked up a branch and wrote out his full name in the sand by the stream.

It was remarkably good calligraphy! The vigorous and unrestrained strokes flowed like soaring dragons and dancing phoenixes, exhibiting an unconventional forcefulness.

Thus, the large characters “Wei Jie” struck directly into Cui Xiaoxiao’s eyes.

After a long silence, she asked gravely, “Why… did you take that name?”

He clearly had cultivation foundations and was no ordinary mortal! Yet all cultivators would avoid carelessly uttering the names of infamous villains. So how could he just happen to have the same name as Wei Jie the Demon Lord?

Hearing Xiaoxiao’s question, the man calmly said, “One cannot discard the name given by one’s father. ‘Jie’ means ‘the inability to attain what one covets.’ I was forced to come to the mortal realm against my will. To my parents, I was their unfulfilled obsession.”

Cui Xiaoxiao’s mind was buzzing, her thoughts rapidly jumping between this verdant mountain, the sudden appearance of the Sinbream Serpent, and this man who also went by “Wei Jie”, growing increasingly muddled.

Everything about this place seemed to exude an endless sense of bizarreness.

She hesitantly asked again, “May I ask, who is your respected father?”

Wei Jie looked directly into his young master’s large eyes and slowly said, “He was the head of the renowned Demon-Quelling Wei Clan in past times – Wei Jingling!”

Cui Xiaoxiao gasped and stepped back two paces.

The handsome man finally revealed a sinister smile as he continued, “As for my mother… If you’ve seen the stone stele on the mountain, young lady, you should know she was a Demonic Fox. I am a half-demon, born of a human and a fox spirit! Being a demonic descendant unfit to bear the Wei surname, I took the ‘Wei’ character comprised of ‘demon’ and altered my surname accordingly…”

He spoke with an obvious intention to shock this young lady who had so rashly dared to accept him as a disciple, his lips curved in a mocking smile as he waited for her horrified reaction.

After all, his mother was the dreaded Demonic Fox that all righteous cultivators sought to exterminate without mercy. And his father was a criminal condemned by the orthodox sects.

Whoever accepted such a disciple would be inviting the downfall of their entire sect!

When he agreed to take her as master earlier, it was really just to see her flustered response in this moment of revelation. He wondered what excuse she would use to hastily distance herself from him.

Though he didn’t usually find amusement in such trivial matters, for some reason today he felt compelled to tease this strange young lady who had seemingly appeared out of nowhere.

He had originally thought she was from a rival sect sent to lure him into a trap, so he pretended to fall for it to see what schemes she had planned.

But later he realized this young lady was genuinely unaware of what lurked in the valley, looking so pitiful when poisoned.

She was simply an ignorant young lady lacking insight. His rebuke would prevent her from recklessly declaring herself a sect leader and indiscriminately accepting disciples everywhere she went.

But instead of the expected flustered reaction, the young lady stared at him for a long while before asking a completely unrelated question – “May I ask, what is the current year’s regnal era name?”

After Wei Jie answered, Cui Xiaoxiao fell silent, using her fingers to calculate for a while. Then she said in despair, “You said… this is really Elder Mountain? But why are there so many trees here?”

Even if she had mistakenly accepted the wrong disciple, the young lady’s reaction was too bizarre!

Wei Jie didn’t know why she was asking such things. The mocking smile faded from his face as he wondered if she had been so frightened that she had lost her senses and began raving nonsensically.

He had no idea that his new master’s mind was currently a raging storm of turmoil.

She… she felt a sense of temporal dislocation. This man didn’t seem to be lying or joking, but what exactly was going on here?

Just as Cui Xiaoxiao was utterly perplexed, a voice suddenly rang in her ears, “My my, you really are something, actually managing to activate the Zhu Jiuyin divine statue. But… how did you end up sending yourself to this time period? Don’t you know that according to your birth destiny, going back two hundred years means you’ll definitely die by his hands? Ah, how fascinating, hahaha!”

Cui Xiaoxiao knew this was the demonic bead within her body speaking to her. Though her blood lineage suppressed the bead’s malicious nature, preventing it from possessing her to commit evil deeds, after being nourished by the serpent venom earlier, it had apparently regained some vitality to rouse from its slumber and idly converse with her.

After saying this, the demonic bead seemed to exhaust its spiritual energy as it let out a lazy yawn before sinking back into dormancy, no longer speaking.

But Cui Xiaoxiao was left utterly shaken. What did it mean – had she really traveled over two hundred years into the past because of that ominous avatar statue? And she was fated to die by someone’s hands here?

Being extremely intelligent, Cui Xiaoxiao carefully analyzed the demonic bead’s words while recounting all the strange events since encountering this man. She finally realized the truth with dawning horror, her breath catching in her throat!

If this really was Elder Mountain over two centuries ago, then the abundance of lush vegetation was because the trees had not yet been incinerated by the Phoenix’s celestial flames.

Then this whip-wielding man who could shake boulders… was none other than the once-human Wei Jie before he became the Demon Lord!

That’s right! According to legends, the not-yet-demonic Wei Jie had come to Elder Mountain and shattered the Four Great Sect’s merit steles…

The more Cui Xiaoxiao thought about it, the more her head pounded. Feeling drained, she asked the man who had been watching her silently, “Those people pursuing us up the mountain earlier… who were they?”

Wei Jie lazily replied, “Looked like disciples from the Four Great Sects.”

Cui Xiaoxiao gritted her teeth, “So… they weren’t actually chasing after me, but coming for you! Why didn’t you say so earlier?”

Wei Jie arched an eyebrow as he calmly explained, “But Master, you truly are a beauty like a pristine lotus blossom. How was I to know if any of those many men harbored amorous intentions toward you?”

Faced with this flippant scoundrel, Xiaoxiao could only rub her temples in exasperation before asking, “What did you do to make them chase you like that?”

The man smiled lazily, “Nothing much, just stole some of their spirit-strengthening pellets to replenish my energy… Master, would you like a few to vent your vexations?”

Saying this, he untied his cloth bundle. To Xiaoxiao’s surprise, instead of gold she had assumed from the glinting light, it was filled with shimmering golden spirit pellets – he had clearly plundered all of the Four Great Sects’ treasuries!

Alright, with his statement, Cui Xiaoxiao could finally align the sequence of events.

Her master’s secret annals had mentioned that before Wei Jie became infamous, he was surrounded by disciples of the Four Sects on Elder Mountain after stealing their spirit pellets.

With his foundations still unstable at the time, he was forced off a cliff during the ambush and ended up in the Sinbream Serpent’s den. Gravely wounded from battling the giant serpent and poisoned, this marked the start of his path towards demonic depravity!

But now, what situation was this? Why had the course of events deviated so drastically from what originally occurred?

    Mistaken Era – Chapter 16

These eggs, each as big as an elongated pumpkin, made it impossible to tell what kind of animal they belonged to.

Just as she was about to turn and speak to the man, she froze, unable to make a sound.

During the earlier cliff jump, the black veil on the man’s face had also been blown open by the wind.

She had originally thought this man was unwilling to show his face because of an unsightly appearance.

But now, looking at him, it turned out that she was the one encountering a beauty today.

If Qin Lingxiao’s type could be described as boldly handsome in a righteous way, then the man before her possessed an enchanting demonic handsomeness.

Before witnessing such an appearance, it was truly hard to imagine there could be such a bewitchingly handsome man in this world!

Especially those long eyes of his that occasionally shimmered with a faint purple light, complemented unexpectedly harmoniously by his high-bridged nose and thin lips. The depths of those eyes seemed capable of devouring one’s soul, unknowingly luring one into being immersed within them…

However, the man didn’t seem to enjoy being stared at. Under Cui Xiaoxiao’s entranced gaze, his expression grew increasingly cold as he deliberately turned his face away, then slowly said, “What’s the matter? Is there something wrong with my face?”

Cui Xiaoxiao finally snapped out of her daze, forcibly shifting her eyes away from that impossibly handsome face.

Having witnessed too many ugly things in the world from a young age, she naturally knew that good looks, for either men or women born into lowly situations, were seldom a blessing.

It seemed this man must have previously suffered from the burden of an outstanding appearance, which was why he was unwilling to show his true face.

She had no need to bring up his uncomfortable past by rashly praising his handsomeness.

Thinking this, she calmly said, “Hmm… your face is a bit smudged with dirt. You can wipe it off later. Oh no, it seems we’ve crashed into some animal’s eggs. We should get away from here quickly.”

This man didn’t seem to expect Cui Xiaoxiao to regain her senses so quickly, nor for her to avoid falling into an entranced state like others did upon first seeing his appearance. So he was slightly stunned, wiping his face with his shirt as he said, “We’re both covered in egg fluids. The owner of these eggs will track us by following the scent. I’m afraid it’s too late to leave now…”

The egg fluid carried a sweet, pungent odor that was quite potent and impossible to mask. Looking at these massive eggs, Cui Xiaoxiao’s eyelids began twitching ominously.

She quickly took off her outer jacket stained with egg fluid and tossed it aside, raising her head to scan their surroundings. Her innate supernatural eyes soon discovered that something seemed to be surging toward them from underground in the northeast corner of the valley.

Such an earthly undulation was truly a sight to behold. But Cui Xiaoxiao had already guessed that whatever was rapidly approaching from belowground must be the owner of the eggs – she just didn’t know what creature could lay eggs of such massive size!

Thinking this, she turned to the man and said, “Should we… go back up?”

The man’s lips curved into a meaningful smile as he casually glanced down at Xiaoxiao and said, “Miss went to so much trouble luring me here. If we just leave, wouldn’t that be a pity?”

He was clearly implying something, but Cui Xiaoxiao didn’t understand what he meant.

She didn’t have time to ponder it deeply now. After weighing the pros and cons, she said solemnly, “There are pursuers up on the cliff, and a fierce beast here. But beasts are easier to deal with than people. Let’s hide here quietly… When that creature shows itself, I’ll use a Soul-Sealing Talisman to subdue it…”

Finished speaking, she took out several Soul-Sealing Talismans that her senior martial sister had drawn for her – previously, members of the Talisman Sect had relied on hunting to earn a difficult living.

These Soul-Sealing Talismans were exceptionally effective for hunting. No matter how fast a rabbit ran, as long as it touched the talisman laid on the ground, it would immediately freeze in place, allowing one to calmly wait for the prey to come to them for an easy meal.

Now, Cui Xiaoxiao planned to use the same method. She arranged the Soul-Sealing Talismans around the shattered pile of large eggs, then burrowed into the dense tangle of vines, using fallen leaves to conceal her body.

Her plan was to temporarily hide here. When the creature came to check on the eggs and was entrapped by the talisman’s effects, she would then emerge to finish it off.

She just didn’t know what kind of exotic beast it was. If simply roasted, would the meat be tender and delicious enough…?

That man had been idly sitting by the whole time, watching Xiaoxiao bustle about making arrangements like a busy little sparrow, completely indifferent.

Finally, he did put in some work, getting up to go to a stream and wash off the egg fluid from his body. Then he searched around and fixed his gaze on a trifoliate plant.

He plucked some leaves, rolled them into two small balls, and stuffed them into his nostrils.

The surface of the stream also began to ripple slightly. The man looked down at the rippling stream water, slowly standing up to face the rapidly approaching mound of earth from the distant valley, his expression becoming quite solemn.

Cui Xiaoxiao, hidden behind the green screen, stole another furtive glance at the man’s bewitching appearance.

After all, once they escaped this danger, she would have to part ways with this chivalrous gentleman. She might as well take another look, as she might not have a chance to see such a good-looking person again.

At that moment, the rumbling sounds from underground grew increasingly close.

Cui Xiaoxiao glanced over in a daze, and with an explosive sound, two massive snake heads suddenly burst forth from below the ground!

As the two enormous snake heads bounced high into the air, Cui Xiaoxiao’s eyes grew wider and wider.

This snake… had two connected large heads on a single body!

In Cui Xiaoxiao’s memory, she had heard tales of such a snake before. What was it called? That’s right! The Sinbream Snake that emerged from the Sinbream Snake Den atop Elder Mountain two hundred years ago.

The Sinbream Snake was a hermaphrodite, and these two snake heads – one was oval-shaped, likely the female snake’s head, while the other became triangular in anger upon seeing the shattered eggs, obviously the male snake’s head.

Oh no! How could she have encountered the legendary monster snake?

Her only hope now was that those Soul-Sealing Talismans would work and subdue this ancient serpent of myth.

The man had remained unmoving, so the two-headed giant snake naturally attacked him first, standing by the stream.

The massive snake body lifted into the air, jaws gaping wide as it suddenly released a greenish mist carrying an indescribable serpentine stench that instantly filled the entire valley.

Cui Xiaoxiao only got a brief whiff before inwardly exclaiming, “Not good!”

So this was how the snake attacked its prey – first immobilizing them by dousing them in a toxic mist before devouring them at its leisure.

Now the entire valley was filled with the serpent’s venom. Cui Xiaoxiao had inadvertently inhaled some and immediately felt her legs go weak, tumbling out from behind the green screen.

Due to the steep terrain, she rolled rapidly downhill, ending up right in front of the two-headed snake – as if sacrificing herself to feed the serpent and shield the man from disaster.

This handsome stranger seemed touched, raising his voice to say, “Miss, there’s no need to be so rash! I can handle this alone, don’t rush forward!”

If Cui Xiaoxiao could speak through the numbness from the venom coursing through her body, she would curse up a storm!

Was she really fated to perish tragically here because of her Ten Wounds Birthmark?

There was no time to ponder further, as the giant snake had already picked up the lingering scent of egg fluid on her body. Enraged, it glared with four blazing lantern-like eyes, baring baring its ferocious serrated fangs as it lunged viciously toward her.

Though her body was paralyzed, Cui Xiaoxiao caught a glimpse of the nearby stream in her peripheral vision and quickly began chanting the Water Manipulation Incantation inwardly.

Perhaps being in a life-threatening situation could better stimulate her latent abilities, or maybe her previous sparring with the Sword Sect disciple had made her more proficient in using the Water Manipulation Incantation. This time, without much effort, Cui Xiaoxiao redirected two streams of water shooting directly toward the two terrifying snake heads.

The two massive snake heads were blasted backward by the water, buying Xiaoxiao a brief opportunity.

She circulated her dantian’s inner energy, trying to suppress the serpent venom within her body. But unexpectedly, it felt as if her dantian’s energy was being drained away, leaving an empty void. At the same time, the demonic bead’s venom, which had already flared up once before, showed signs of resurgence.

Cui Xiaoxiao realized that the demonic bead within her seemed to have been nourished, its previously dormant malice growing increasingly potent.

She immediately guessed the reason – although this bead was a condensation of impurities refined by Wei Jie years ago, its origins were from the venom of this two-headed serpent.

Now that she had accidentally inhaled the serpent’s toxic mist, the demonic bead received nourishment. If it accumulated enough power, it might just break through the restraints of her Yin Blood lineage and seize control of her consciousness…

It was a case of misfortune compounding misfortune in quick succession.

As her dantian’s energy gradually depleted, the water streams she controlled also shrank. The two-headed snake was repeatedly blasted back by the water, growing increasingly enraged.

Once the water’s force weakened, the two massive snake heads shook off the droplets before viciously charging forward again, shrouded in a toxic green mist.

At this critical juncture, Cui Xiaoxiao’s waist was bound by a black whip that yanked her to the man’s side.

After pulling Cui Xiaoxiao over, the young man propped her up against a large boulder. He then leapt toward the two-headed serpent, his agile movements indicating he was completely unaffected by the toxic mist.

Cui Xiaoxiao focused her gaze on his nose – no wonder the serpent’s venom had no effect on him. Earlier, he had stuffed some unknown grass into his nostrils, apparently acting as a filter against the toxins…

She watched as he drew his rusty, battered sword. While agilely leaping about, he flicked his wrist, slashing rapidly toward the snake’s heads.

Though his movements were swift, the giant serpent reacted with incredible speed as well. The two snake heads dodged left and right with agility while continuing to spew dense green mists that gradually enveloped the entire valley.

Left with no way to avoid it, Cui Xiaoxiao could only hold her breath and focus her inner energy to suppress the surging demonic toxins within her body.

By now, the giant snake had slithered to the edge of the shattered egg pit. As it moved, its underbelly dragged across the Soul-Sealing Talismans Cui Xiaoxiao had previously laid on the ground.

Her senior martial sister’s talismans did prove effective! The serpent froze motionless like a wooden chicken after being immobilized by the talisman’s power.

But in the blink of an eye, the talisman’s effects seemed to wear off as the giant snake began flicking its tongue once more.

However, the man seized that momentary opportunity. Two streaks of light flashed as the two snake heads were nearly simultaneously severed, spraying crimson blood everywhere…

After decapitating the snake, the man approached its still twitching abdomen, slicing it open to retrieve a large mottled-green serpent gall bladder that he held over his shoulder. He then came over to Cui Xiaoxiao.

Cutting open the gall bladder, he used his own water canteen to collect some of the bile fluid, passing it to her and saying, “The taste is quite foul, but it’s an excellent antidote for serpent venom. Best to drink it down in one gulp.”

Saying this, he offered the canteen right up to Cui Xiaoxiao. By now, the serpent venom was coursing through every part of her body, being greedily consumed by the demonic bead hidden somewhere within.

Knowing there was no time to hesitate, Cui Xiaoxiao immediately drank down the bile fluid the man had passed her.

This chivalrous gentleman was right – the serpent gall did indeed work. In no time at all, Cui Xiaoxiao felt the numbness leaving her fingertips, and even the piercing pain from the demonic bead’s venom flaring up had greatly subsided.

After drinking another mouthful of the intensely bitter gall bile, Cui Xiaoxiao finally felt some relief, though her legs still wouldn’t move.

Seeing the grass balls the man had stuffed into his nose, she suddenly wondered: how did this stranger foresee that the approaching creature would spew toxins?

  • Mistaken Era – Chapter 15

    Mistaken Era – Chapter 15

Cui Xiaoxiao withdrew her gaze and looked down again at the stone tablet closest to her.

The characters engraved on this stone tablet were easy to recognize. After reading a few lines, Cui Xiaoxiao understood the reason for the numerous standing stone tablets in this area.

However…the story on this stone tablet was exactly the same as the legend of Mount Lao that Second Senior Sister had told her when they first arrived at Mount Lao.

In the past, the standing tablets at the Phoenix Pool at the foot of Mount Lao commemorated the great deeds of the four major sects in suppressing the Wei family, the guardians of Mount Lao.

Mount Lao was the intersection between the Yin realm and the Yang realm, which had been guarded by the demon-subduing Wei family for a long time.

Unfortunately, over two hundred years ago during the time of Wei Jinglong of that generation, he became dissatisfied with his clan being confined there due to ancestral duties. He secretly released a femme fatale to alleviate his boredom.

This femme fatale demon, originally an expert at seducing men, ended up reversing the situation and bewitching Wei Jinglong into a trance, causing him to completely forget the responsibilities of the Wei family.

In the end, he not only bore an ill-fated child with the femme fatale but also privately released the three fiends of the Yin realm to wreak havoc in the mortal world.

How could the righteous cultivators of the demon-subduing Wei Dao tolerate this? They allied together to condemn the Wei family and force them to hand over the femme fatale and the ill-fated child.

Wei Jinglong, perhaps bewitched by the femme fatale’s charms, stubbornly refused to comply. However, to avoid implicating the rest of the Wei family, he descended the mountain alone to confront the four major sects.

In the end, feeling that his fate had run its course, Wei Jinglong committed suicide out of guilt and fell into the abyss of the Yin realm.

To admonish the Wei family, the four sects that participated in the suppression campaign erected various stone tablets, both large and small, to rebuke the descendants of the Wei family while also praising their own meritorious deeds.

However, these stone tablets were later shattered by one person. From then on, an unknown person began to awe the world and gradually came into the view of the cultivation sects…

Cui Xiaoxiao already knew this past history without needing Second Senior Sister’s introduction, as her master had mentioned it in passing amidst daily mundane affairs.

The person who shattered the stone tablets at the Phoenix Pool of Mount Lao years ago was precisely the demon later known as the calamity Wei Jie, who caused a bloody storm in the mortal world.

According to legends, “Wei” is a homophone for “Wei”. Wei Jie was likely the child born to Wei Jinglong and the Yin realm femme fatale back then, which explained his actions at the time. Later, after perfecting his demonic arts, he avenged his father by carrying out a bloody purge of Lingxun Pavilion, single-handedly confronting the four major sects.

But…all of that happened over two hundred years ago!

So why did a young man now appear, imitating the actions of Wei Jie from back then, wielding a whip to smash the stone tablets? Moreover, the four major sects seemed to have an irrepressible desire for fame, erecting commemorative tablets not only on Mount Lao but also on other mountains.

No matter how much Cui Xiaoxiao pondered, she could not make sense of it.

Judging by the appearance of these stone tablets, they must have been erected not too long ago. After Wei Jie’s massacre two hundred years ago, the four major sects were almost wiped out, so she did not know which remaining disciples or descendants erected these tablets.

Before Cui Xiaoxiao could recover from her bewilderment, the man standing atop the stone tablets seemed to sense her aura. He suddenly turned his face slightly, and the long whip in his hand directly lashed out towards Cui Xiaoxiao.

Cui Xiaoxiao quickly took out a Water-Guiding Talisman, immediately forming a water shield.

However, the water shield infused with spiritual energy could not block the fierce lash of the long whip. The three steel needles at the tip of the whip pierced through the water shield, aiming straight for Cui Xiaoxiao’s face.

Cui Xiaoxiao cried out in alarm, silently cursing as she could only close her eyes and await the impending pain.

Unexpectedly, upon hearing her cry, the man flicked his wrist at the last moment to retract the whip. Then, like a black lightning bolt, he swiftly jumped in front of her.

In the brief moment of turning, a black veil already covered his face, revealing only thick, dark brows and a pair of eyes… with a faint, alluring purple glow amidst the blackness.

Cui Xiaoxiao had never seen such bewitching eyes before. Gazing into them for too long seemed to ensnare one’s soul, causing one to forget what to say…

Seeing that the person who disrupted him was a young, graceful girl, the man originally did not intend to pay her any heed. However, after a moment of silence, he unexpectedly spoke first, asking, “You seem quite skilled with talismans. Which sect’s disciple are you?”

Cui Xiaoxiao was taken aback, but hearing his calm tone and that he had stopped in time without harming her, she had no reason to remain silent. So she cupped her hands in salutation and tentatively said, “I am a disciple of the Lingshan Talisman Sect… I wonder if you have heard of it, Sir?”

The man raised his handsome, thick brows, seeming to ponder seriously for a moment before saying, “Lingshan Talisman Sect? Never heard of it… But why are you here?”

Cui Xiaoxiao felt that this man seemed rather ignorant of the world. Although the Lingshan Talisman Sect could not compare to the major sects, her master Tang Youshu was no obscure figure and had some reputation, at least.

Yet this man had never even heard of their sect?

She blinked her eyes, responding with a question instead of answering, “You’ve been the one asking questions. Now it’s my turn to ask you, why are you smashing these stone tablets?”

The man, who seemed to be a drunkard, tilted his head to unveil his face and drained the last few drops of wine from his gourd before hanging it back, unsatisfied. Pointing at one of the stone tablets, he lazily said, “These tablets are made from dragon bones, a true rarity. Dragons are divine creatures that soar through the heavens and slumber among the clouds and beneath the oceans, epitomizing unrestrained freedom. For such majestic, spiritual beings, having their bones turned into tablets after death is acceptable. But the words engraved on these stone tablets are not written in the free and unbound script of cursive calligraphy. Instead, they are imprinted in a rigid, idiotic manner, as if fearing people cannot understand them. It is like lice infesting a dragon’s body – even in death, they cannot rest in peace! Lashing them with a whip and shattering them is simply scratching an itch, letting these dragon bones experience some relief!”

Saying this, he let out another cold laugh and casually shattered two more stone tablets with his whip. Wherever the whip struck, spiritual energy flowed, indicating that this man’s cultivation was formidable.

His words were twisted logic and drunken ramblings!

Yet as Cui Xiaoxiao listened, she felt there was some reason to them and couldn’t help but nod slightly.

A fine horse deserves a fine saddle, and a fine tablet deserves fine calligraphy. How could a spiritual being like a dragon be willing to have its bones made into tablets praising the mundane achievements of mortals?

Although this drunken man was indulging in drunken antics, his words carried a carefree spirit, marking him as someone true to his nature

If he enjoyed smashing the tablets, then so be it!

She did not want to disrupt his enjoyment, so it was better to quickly leave this place and inquire about the direction to Mount Lao.

Thus, she cupped her hands again and asked, “Excuse me, sir, which way should I go to reach Mount Lao?”

The man looked Cui Xiaoxiao up and down, slowly replying, “This place…is Mount Lao.”

Cui Xiaoxiao was dumbfounded, gazing around again at the lush greenery blanketing the mountain.

She really should not have asked a drunkard! How could this verdant place possibly be the yellow sand-swept Mount Lao?

But at that moment, a boisterous crowd suddenly appeared at the foot of the mountain. They were all traveling by sword flight, their bearing indicating deep cultivation.

With her keen eyesight, Cui Xiaoxiao immediately noticed that the ones in the lead were dressed in white, ethereal robes – likely disciples of the Jiuxuan Sword Sect. As for the various others following behind, she did not know where the sword sect had gathered these helpers from.

Damn it, these lingering ghosts were actually pursuing her all the way here!

And at that moment, the man beside her suddenly drew an old sword without a hilt from his waist. He wrapped a tattered cloth around the bare tang, making it appear as if he intended to fight to the death against those coming up the mountain.

Cui Xiaoxiao felt this had nothing to do with the man, so she spoke up, “Sir, they are after me, not you. If you have no business here, you should leave.”

But this time, the man looked at her quite seriously and asked in return, “Oh? Why are they chasing you?”

Cui Xiaoxiao frowned as she gazed at the swarming crowd below, suspecting the Jiuxuan Sword Sect had practically emptied their entire sect to come after her!

Had Qin Lingxiao become so desperate for a wife that he would go to such lengths to pursue her?

Thus, she let out a cold snort and said, “Someone thinks I should marry him, so he shamelessly pursues me everywhere… You should leave quickly. If you don’t leave soon, you won’t be able to later.”

The man studied Cui Xiaoxiao for a moment, then remarked thoughtfully, “I see. With your beauty, it’s no wonder you’ve attracted scoundrels. The wine today is good, and the person I’ve encountered is also a beauty. Since that is the case, how could I abandon such a fine wine and lovely lady to face danger alone?”

Cui Xiaoxiao felt there was a hint of flirtation in his words and shot the man beside her a cold glare.

However, before she could rebuke him, she saw the man extend his arms, pointing at the swarming crowd trying to ascend the mountain, and said, “Don’t worry, my lady. I will join you in battle. Take a look and see how many you can take on alone. We can split them up!”

Although this masked man’s words lacked decorum, Cui Xiaoxiao sensed a chivalrous aura about him. Despite having no stake in this, he willingly joined the fray. She had never seen anyone so eagerly court trouble.

However, the man was clearly not just putting on an act. He flew straight up, unleashing sword energies that knocked down several people in black robes charging towards them.

Those in black did not seem intent on pursuing Cui Xiaoxiao. With furious expressions, they surrounded the young man, engaging him in fierce combat.

Cui Xiaoxiao could have taken this opportunity to turn and flee, but this man had nobly stepped in to help her despite being drunk. Abandoning him would be lacking in any chivalric spirit.

Thinking this, Cui Xiaoxiao flicked her wrist, retrieving four Water-Guiding Talismans and immediately summoning four water pythons to charge the people below. Taking advantage of them being swept away by the water, Cui Xiaoxiao quickly shouted to the man, “There are too many of them, we cannot brute force our way through! Quick, follow me!”

However, the man did not seem keen on retreating, lazily swinging his sword in a flurry as he said, “A man should face things head on. How can we flee without a fight?”

Cui Xiaoxiao disliked hearing such boastful words from men.

She went over, grabbed his sleeve, and started running, saying as they fled, “A gentleman’s revenge can wait ten years. Our forces are too meager, why waste our lives recklessly? Leave the green mountains intact, and we’ll have plenty of kindling to burn later. Good sir, if you don’t leave now, these verdant hills and ripe kindling will be lost! Be careful, or they might even smash your wine gourd!”

The young man seemed amused by Cui Xiaoxiao’s words and obediently followed her, asking as they ran, “Then…where should we hide to preserve these green hills and ripe kindling?”

Cui Xiaoxiao had already planned their escape route. Without blinking, she said, “Earlier, I climbed up from a mountain valley. That valley seems to have many caves, though I don’t know where they lead. It’s densely forested, perfect for hiding. Let’s take shelter there first. Once night falls, we can think of another plan.”

The man pondered for a moment and nodded, “Makes sense…Since I’m unfamiliar with this area, please lead the way, my lady.”

Not daring to delay, Cui Xiaoxiao headed straight back towards the direction she had climbed up from. The man followed leisurely behind her, watching this slender girl’s long braid swish side to side, like a nimble forest sprite…

Soon, she arrived at the spot she had climbed up from and pointed to the cliff, telling the man, “Good sir, you go down first!”

But the man gazed deeply into the valley below and, after a moment of silence, said, “This valley bottom…it’s better if we don’t jump down.”

Thinking he was afraid of heights, Cui Xiaoxiao didn’t press him further. She prepared to descend the same way she had climbed up, using the vines growing on the cliff face.

But who could have expected that after studying the area for a moment, the man suddenly grabbed Cui Xiaoxiao by the collar without warning and leapt off the cliff…

The cliff was very high – it had taken Cui Xiaoxiao quite some effort to climb up earlier. But jumping down only took a fleeting moment to reach the bottom.

Due to the rapid descent, even though the man used his internal energy to somewhat absorb the impact upon landing, the ground still cratered from their powerful landing, leaving a large pit amid the bed of fallen leaves.

When the two tumbled into the pit, Cui Xiaoxiao discovered a wet, viscous sensation beneath her – the pit seemed to contain several massive eggs, and they had landed directly atop a few of these huge eggs, cracking them open and causing the egg fluid to ooze out…

    Mistaken Era – Chapter 14

Since she had managed to gain a slight upper hand in her previous struggles against the demon pearl, and her cultivation had also modestly improved, she had no reason to easily submit to the demonic malice.

Though the flare-up of the malice did indeed inflict excruciating pain, as the malice coursed through her meridians towards her dantian, she could distinctly sense its path at each point.

Amidst the agony, Cui Xiaoxiao discovered that she had suddenly comprehended the mechanics of circulating internal energy through the meridians – something she had never truly understood before, but now grasped under the demon malice’s influence.

It must be understood that for cultivators, whether practicing qi circulation, pill refinement, or talisman drawing, the first step is unblocking their meridians and learning to circulate their internal energy. Only by skillfully manipulating this energy can one be considered to have entered the path.

Xiaoxiao’s previous inability to enter meditative trances like her martial siblings was due to this very issue, often leaving her with an aching back and waist.

The master had said that on the path of cultivation, one’s innate talent and willpower accounted for half, but “opportunities” were something one could encounter but never seek.

She finally understood that some opportunities did not come wrapped in flowers, but were accompanied by thorns and blades.

It was because of the suppression from her extremely yin-natured blood that she avoided being tormented into losing consciousness by the malice and becoming a mindless husk like the White family’s wife.

By enduring the torment of the malice, she could cross the lofty threshold separating mortals and cultivators faster than ordinary people.

She would have to see who ultimately begged who between her and Qin Lingxiao!

The Sword Sect disciples seemed surprised that even in such dire straits, Cui Xiaoxiao remained so unyielding, leaving them momentarily dumbstruck and unsure how to respond.

Meanwhile, in the main hall of Nine Mystic Sword Mountain, Qin Lingxiao, in a state of dimensional transcendence during his meditation, was using his Divine Vision technique, borrowing the eyes of one of his disciples to witness Xiaoxiao’s defiant refusal.

Having long since mastered the eighth level of sword qi and not flown into a rage for quite some time, Qin Lingxiao was nearly enraged enough by Cui Xiaoxiao’s impudence to rise up.

The foolish girl simply didn’t know what was good for her!

He had gone through so much trouble to consider her reputation, even offering her a marital position, yet it turned out to be a futile effort, wasting all his goodwill!

That level of demonic malice was enough to torment even celestial immortals. What abilities did this worldly mortal girl possess to resist it?

Did she think his initial marriage proposal was made out of lust for her beauty, hoping to take advantage of her?

Originally assuming her ignorance of propriety, Qin Lingxiao had deliberately waited until Cui Xiaoxiao was suffering a malice flare-up to give her a way out.

Now it seemed Tang Youshu’s disciples were just as stubborn and obstinate as their master!

But if Cui Xiaoxiao was unafraid of death and could endure, Qin Lingxiao could not drag this out indefinitely.

As Cui Xiaoxiao had speculated, it was not his overflowing righteousness driving him to hastily rescue her, but his own need to use the demon malice to suppress the demonic backlash from his own cultivation.

Otherwise, if the demonic nature gained the upper hand, wouldn’t his decades of bitter cultivation be ruined in an instant?

Thinking this, Qin Lingxiao used his mind transmission technique to issue orders to the disciples: “Ignore whatever Cui Xiaoxiao said, quickly bring her back to Nine Mystic Sword Mountain!”

Just the day before, Ling Zhishan had sent word that she had obtained another demon pearl “Wrath”, lacking only the “Greed” pearl possessed by Cui Xiaoxiao, which was proving so troublesome to acquire.

Qin Lingxiao immediately decided that since Cui Xiaoxiao disdained becoming his spouse, he need not worry about preserving her reputation or granting her any status.

He would first bring her back, force the demonic malice out in the cold pool, and deal with the rest later.

After all, he was still saving her life by doing this, whether she was grateful or not was another matter entirely.

At that moment at the foot of Fengchi Mountain, upon receiving the sect master’s orders, the Sword Sect disciples exchanged glances and stepped forward, reaching out towards the prostrate Cui Xiaoxiao.

Just as their hands were about to reach her, the writhing Xiaoxiao had already endured the first bout of torment from the malice flare-up.

As she had anticipated, in order to resist the malice, she had unconsciously begun circulating the energy from her dantian.

During the intervals when the malice subsided, she felt an unprecedented surging sensation in her dantian.

Drawing upon this irrepressible dantian energy, Cui Xiaoxiao took out the water-controlling talisman she had previously drawn, raising her arms as she silently recited the incantation.

This time, as the incantation left her lips, the intricate syllables seemed to reverberate in her ears, causing her entire meridian network to resonate with the rhythm of the spell.

Suddenly, rain began pouring down from the previously scorching desert sky.

Even Ji Wuqi was rendered speechless at this sight. Though the most senior disciple praised by the master for his decent talents, it had taken him eight years to barely grasp the arts of water and fire control.

Yet this Cui Xiaoxiao, who had joined the sect less than a month ago, had already advanced with such divine speed to this realm…

With Xiaoxiao’s successful summoning of rain, when the raindrops fell, they became her army of soldiers to drive off enemies.

Her slender arms swept out, and the countless raindrops converged into a water python that instantly blasted the Sword Sect disciples away.

Touching her drenched cheeks, she said derisively, “Is this how the upright sects invite people?”

The scene of Cui Xiaoxiao using water flows to repel the Sword Sect disciples was also witnessed by Qin Lingxiao from thousands of miles away.

He frowned slightly. When they had met at the silkworm field, this Cui Xiaoxiao did not seem capable of such feats!

Controlling water flows was not rare, but to wield them so freely for offense was an ability few in the world currently possessed.

So Cui Xiaoxiao had such profound cultivation? Had she previously been hiding her abilities?

Qin Lingxiao’s patience was thoroughly exhausted by this obstinate girl.

Currently at the Nine Mystic Sword Mountain thousands of miles away, he could not instantly transport his true body to Laoshan.

However, he was adept at the Divine Vision technique, allowing him to project an avatar over great distances by separating his soul.

Since Jiang Zheng was incompetent at “inviting” Cui Xiaoxiao, Qin Lingxiao would have to take the field himself to “welcome” her back to Nine Mystic Sword Mountain.

With a dexterous hand gesture, Qin Lingxiao once more separated his soul, manifesting an avatar that appeared before the Talisman Sect cultivators on Laoshan.

Just as Cui Xiaoxiao’s body wavered after expending her energy, starting to lean back, Qin Lingxiao’s avatar appeared and caught her slender waist with one arm.

Though this girl looked slim, her supple waist did not feel bony at all…

But just as Qin Lingxiao’s attention wavered, another group of black-robed women arrived fleetingly from afar.

After retrieving the demon pearl “Wrath”, Ling Zhishan still felt uneasy about Qin Lingxiao.

She knew that for many years, he had suffered from the demonic backlash of his cultivation, and seeing the darkening mark on his forehead indicated he was struggling to suppress his demonic nature.

Previously at the silkworm field, the “Greed” pearl seemed to have been taken by Cui Xiaoxiao and never returned. Yet Qin Lingxiao had been too lenient with that girl.

After returning from Maoshan, Ling Zhishan planned to retrieve “Greed” as well. She would not show any mercy to that foxy little girl.

Unexpectedly, when Ling Zhishan hurriedly arrived with disciples from the Twin Rites Palace, she witnessed the scene of Qin Lingxiao’s avatar embracing Cui Xiaoxiao.

Ling Zhishan was so furious her hands trembled as she channeled her energy, shooting out a spiritual sword directly at Cui Xiaoxiao’s vital points.

The violent motion caused a small box concealed in her sleeves to fling out.

As the spiritual sword closed in on the pair, Qin Lingxiao’s avatar instinctively unleashed a defensive barrier to deflect it.

The two spiritual forces collided, shattering the box and allowing the demon pearl “Wrath”, freed from its confinement, to immediately attempt an escape.

Upon seeing this, Qin Lingxiao was alarmed. This demon pearl had accumulated spiritual essence over a century. If it fled, there was no telling when they could track it down again.

Without hesitation, he released Cui Xiaoxiao to swiftly grasp the escaping demon pearl.

But in that very moment the bundle on Ji Wuqi’s back suddenly caught fire, and the wooden carving inside broke free of its restraints, slowly rising into the air.

Simultaneously, red and blue beams of light radiated from Cui Xiaoxiao and Qin Lingxiao’s avatar, shining directly into the hollow eye sockets of the carving.

Immediately after, a fissure appeared in the sky, spawning a vortex that swiftly drew in the carving, Cui Xiaoxiao, and Qin Lingxiao’s avatar, making them vanish in an instant…

When Cui Xiaoxiao was pulled into the vortex, she had no time to react, only feeling suffocated and unable to breathe before blacking out.

When she finally regained consciousness, Xiaoxiao felt like her body was floating in water. Realizing this, she raised her head abruptly and flailed her arms, discovering she had fallen into a pool at the edge of a stream.

Struggling to stand up in the water, she looked around dazedly, realizing the raging winds must have swept her off and dropped her at the foot of some mountain cliff. All around were towering ancient trees so dense they blocked out the sky.

Xiaoxiao vaguely recalled the Second Senior Martial Sister mentioning that the Fengchi Pool of Laoshan was where the Apocalypse Wei Huo had been slain by Qin Lingxiao two centuries ago.

Back then, Wei Huo was determined to open the Gate to the Underworld. Though Qin Lingxiao managed to stop him, five phoenixes had circled endlessly overhead, with the lead Crimson Phoneix mournfully screeching flames that ultimately scorched the forests for hundreds of li around Fengchi Pool.

Perhaps due to that divine fire’s scourging, the area around the Phoenix Pool remained barren wasteland for two hundred years without a single blade of grass.

Cui Xiaoxiao was certain she had been swept away from Laoshan Mountain, but being surrounded by lush greenery now, she felt utterly lost as to her current location.

She considered calling out to the Second Senior Martial Sister and the others, but feared attracting Qin Lingxiao and that deranged woman Ling Zhishan, so she could only first attempt climbing up the mountain stream.

Perhaps her three martial siblings were also searching downstream for her.

With that thought, Cui Xiaoxiao wrung the water from her clothes. Though unable to control fire, quickly drying her robes was simple enough.

She silently recited a water control incantation, and in a moment the droplets on her body evaporated, leaving her clothes fresh and dry.

Once refreshed, Xiaoxiao found a sturdy vine on the cliffside and tested its strength before beginning her arduous ascent.

Having learned some martial arts from her adoptive father as a child, Xiaoxiao’s agility allowed her to swiftly scale the cliff and reach the top.

But as she stood upright after climbing over the edge, her eyes widened again in surprise.

Stretching out below was a vast slope…that looked just like the area beneath Laoshan, covered in rows of stone steles! However, unlike those shattered remnants, these steles were perfectly intact.

Xiaoxiao slowly approached and saw the steles were indeed pristine, with clearly visible transcribed characters, indicating this was definitely not Laoshan Mountain.

However, she did not notice that as she passed a boundary stele, a gust of wind parted the waist-high grasses to reveal the words “Laoshan Mountain” carved on its surface…

Looking around in bewilderment and seeing no one, Cui Xiaoxiao pursed her lips and couldn’t help but call out: “Senior Martial Brother! Second Senior Sister! Where are you?”

The clear young voice echoed across the flat expanse, stirring only a few birds into flight with no answering calls.

Xiaoxiao furrowed her brow. Could it be…they had also been captured by the Sword Sect disciples?

She could only continue searching downhill to inquire about directions.

At that moment, the sound of crumbling stone came from further down the slope. Xiaoxiao focused her gaze and saw that at some point, a tall, slender man had taken a seat atop the highest stele.

His back was turned to Xiaoxiao, clad in a black robe with long hair casually draped behind him. One long leg was propped on a stele as he leisurely sipped from a gourd of wine.

After drinking his fill, he flicked his wrist and lashed out with the long whip in his other hand, shattering a nearby stele into pieces…

From afar, Cui Xiaoxiao watched the man effortlessly demolish several steles in the blink of an eye.

For some reason, his silhouette exuded a sense of desolate loneliness, that broad back seemingly dispersing an aura of profound solitude…

    Mistaken Era – Chapter 13

Startled by the Senior Martial Brother’s shout, A Yi fumbled to take out talismans for exorcising demons as he charged towards Cui Xiaoxiao with the Senior Brother.

Cui Xiaoxiao had been holding her breath and concentrating her focus, growing increasingly skilled at controlling the water flows. Just as she was immersed in this state, the Senior Brother’s shout gave her a start.

As a result, not a single drop of the water she was controlling was wasted – it all fell straight down from midair, splashing onto the two martial brothers’ faces and bodies, instantly drenching them.

Shaking her numb arms, Xiaoxiao smiled apologetically at her martial brothers: “Oops, my bad, but weren’t you two skipping your morning wash anyway? This works too…”

After repeatedly confirming that Xiaoxiao had not been demonized, but had simply realized the secret of water control during last night’s meditation, Ji Wuqi’s eyes remained wide like bronze bells.

“Impossible! You were clearly asleep last night, how could your cultivation have increased so much?”

The Second Martial Sister Jiang Nanmu also stared wide-eyed. When she learned that Xiaoxiao had controlled the water without using talismans, simply reciting incantations, her eyes almost popped out.

It must be understood that Talisman Sect cultivators channeled their powers through talismans as a medium, like a mountain climber using a bamboo staff – it made the climb twice as easy.

This was because their spiritual power was insufficient and required external props, which was also why other major sects and palaces looked down on talisman cultivators. Those who refined talismans were innately lacking and unsuitable for true cultivation.

It was like a physical weakling with inconvenient legs insisting on struggling up a mountain while leaning on crutches. They could only circle around the midpoint at best.

It was precisely because of this innate limitation that sects like the Talisman Sect could rarely produce supremely talented cultivators capable of awing the world.

In the past few hundred years of the various Talisman Sect branches, there were almost no examples of cultivators at the highest levels who could control the five elements without using talismans.

After all, transcending the limitation of talismans required immense innate talent and cultivation accumulation. Since they had grown accustomed to using the “talisman crutch”, few were willing to discard it and learn to walk anew.

Yet now, their Lingshan Talisman Sect’s Cui Xiaoxiao…had actually achieved this! Just how much higher was her innate talent than theirs?

When Jiang Nanmu said Xiaoxiao hadn’t used a water-controlling talisman, Ji Wuqi refused to believe it.

Xiaoxiao didn’t bother explaining, simply extending two slender fingers to draw a slender stream from the creek, shamelessly splashing it onto the Senior Martial Brother’s swarthy face before saying, “Well? Do you believe me now?”

Ji Wuqi wiped his dripping face, utterly speechless.

In the cultivation world, apart from the righteous-evil divide, talent and attainment overrode everything!

No matter how much Ji Wuqi had previously looked down on Cui Xiaoxiao, she had now proven with her own ability that among all the sect’s disciples, her talent was the highest! The master had not misjudged her.

Of course, Cui Xiaoxiao understood the reason for her sudden cultivation increase, but could not explain it too clearly to her martial siblings. Otherwise, the Senior Martial Brother would definitely think she had demonized.

As they continued traveling, Xiaoxiao pondered that initially, the demon pearl inside her probably wanted to control her like it had the White family’s wife, provoking her inner resentment to make her demonize and fall under its sway.

But who knew that her extremely yin-natured blood would come into play in that critical moment, repelling the demon. Now she and the demon pearl had reached a delicate balance – as long as this balance wasn’t disrupted, she should be fine for the time being.

However, the Blood Demon had mentioned that she was the second person able to break free of the demon pearl’s control upon realizing it could no longer manipulate her.

Cui Xiaoxiao grew curious – who was the first person to break the demon pearl’s hold?

Little did Xiaoxiao know that the scene of her controlling the water flows was being accurately presented before Qin Lingxiao’s eyes as well.

By now, Qin Lingxiao had returned to the Nine Mystic Sword Mountain, but before leaving, he had already dispatched disciples to monitor and trail Cui Xiaoxiao.

Beside the cold pool on Sword Mountain, he utilized his Divine Vision technique, borrowing the eyes of the secretly monitoring Sword Sect disciples to clearly see what Cui Xiaoxiao was currently doing.

…She actually had such divine abilities! He recalled from their previous meeting that her dantian’s qi was still empty, so how had she reached this level in such a short time?

Could it be…she had used the demon pearl to elevate her cultivation? Wasn’t this treading the same path as the Demon Lord Wei Huo?

Qin Lingxiao opened his eyes in fury and leapt to his feet, only to find that his junior martial sister Ling Zhishan had entered the inner hall at some point and was now standing before him.

“Lingxiao…your forehead…” Ling Zhishan had just noticed that the lotus imprint on Qin Lingxiao’s brow was gradually turning black. She quickly closed the distance between them.

Qin Lingxiao raised a hand to cover the mark on his forehead, then calmly asked Ling Zhishan: “Have you found any leads on the demon pearl ‘Wrath’?”

Ling Zhishan knew he was unwilling to explain, so she suppressed her worry and replied, “I’ve located it. Wrath has possessed a ferocious tiger on Maoshan, constantly raging and devouring passersby. I’m about to take disciples to subdue that demonic tiger and extract the demon pearl…I’ve heard you previously met that Cui Xiaoxiao alone. May I ask what it was about?”

Qin Lingxiao was also unwilling to answer this – after all, he had proposed marriage only to be rejected by the little hen of a sect leader. There was nothing to boast about.

He closed his eyes again and said flatly, “I still need to cultivate further. If you have nothing else, you may go.”

Before other male cultivators, the normally aloof and untouchable Palace Head Ling Zhishan of Liangyi Palace was as cold as an ice lotus. But before her senior martial brother Qin Lingxiao, she was as obedient as a white rabbit.

She could tell Qin Lingxiao’s mood was poor, and that it seemed to be because of Cui Xiaoxiao.

Just what bewitching power did that deviant woman from a lesser sect possess to affect her martial brother’s emotions like this?

Knowing she couldn’t get any answers, she could only look at Qin Lingxiao’s handsome face with a mixture of love and hate before turning to leave the main hall.

To enter Qin Lingxiao’s heart, she needed the ability to support him.

For now, the most crucial thing was obtaining the demon pearl “Wrath”. As for that Cui Xiaoxiao, if an opportunity arose, Ling Zhishan did want to properly meet her…

As for the Talisman Sect cultivators, they were unaware they were being monitored by Sword Sect disciples.

Finally, on this day, they reached the area below Laoshan’s Fengchi Pool.

Upon entering Laoshan’s vicinity, the surrounding vegetation gradually thinned until there were virtually no large trees.

Further up the mountain, the entire peak was as barren as a wasteland, covered in yellow earth. Yet on one slope stood many stone slabs resembling tombstones and ruined walls.

With her keen eyesight, Cui Xiaoxiao could tell those steles were once inscribed with words, but had become almost indecipherable from damage and the ravages of time.

The Second Senior Martial Sister frequently heard the master speak of the previous sect leader’s experiences, so she was well-versed in the history behind these mountain steles.

“The master said these are virtue steles carved from dragon bones by the Four Great Sects. But two hundred years ago, they were shattered by Wei Huo’s lashing whips. I never imagined even shattered remnants would remain after so long!”

Cui Xiaoxiao had also read about this incident in the secret manuals, describing how it occurred before the Demon Lord Wei Huo was pursued by the Four Great Sects and fell into the Soul-Devouring Snake Pit.

His path to demonization began in that eerie valley on Laoshan Mountain.

It seemed that two hundred years ago, this area within a hundred li of Laoshan was still lush and verdant. But after Wei Huo became demonized, slaughtered the Four Sects, and attempted to open the Gate to the Underworld hidden on Laoshan, incurring the wrath of the gods, there was a great battle on the mountain. The areas scorched by divine fire remained barren of any vegetation.

The Second Senior Martial Sister loved reading about the famous legends of the various sects, so she eagerly recounted this tale to her junior martial sister, the cultivation novice.

At first, Cui Xiaoxiao smiled and listened as they climbed the mountain. But as they proceeded, her expression slightly changed as a twinge of pain shot from her chest, rapidly spreading through her entire body.

These past few days, Xiaoxiao had been getting along peacefully with the demon pearl, thinking her extremely yin-natured bloodline had suppressed it.

But now she realized she had celebrated too soon.

Right here on the slope beside the shattered steles at the foot of Laoshan Mountain, the malice of the demon pearl inside Xiaoxiao’s body finally began to act up.

Just as Qin Lingxiao had described, when the malice flared up, every pore of Cui Xiaoxiao’s body felt like it was pierced by a thousand arrows. The excruciating pain caused her to collapse writhing on the ground.

Her three martial siblings tried to lift her onto a nearby boulder, but as soon as their hands touched Xiaoxiao’s body, she cried out in agony again. Even the friction of her clothes was unbearably painful. Beads of sweat soaked her temples as disheveled strands of hair clung to her cheeks.

Seeing her in this state, Jiang Nanmu was nearly in tears as she asked in a hushed voice, “What should we do?”

Ji Wuqi held exorcising talismans, unsure whether to use them or not.

Though he had frequently mocked and belittled the junior sect leader, seeing the seventeen-year-old girl’s face drained of color from the pain, he too was at a loss for how to respond.

Finally, Ji Wuqi clenched the talisman papers into a ball and angrily flung them aside in resignation.

Just as they were all helpless, several Nine Mystic Sword Sect disciples arrived floating on swords, as if having timed their appearance.

The senior Sword Sect disciple Jiang Zheng scanned Cui Xiaoxiao’s writhing form with disdain. After getting an eyeful of the pathetic spectacle, he slowly spoke: “Our sect master foresaw the junior sect leader’s current predicament, so he ordered us to come receive her to meet him. In all the world, only our sect master can save you now, Junior Sect Leader. Please come with us!”

Upon hearing this, the Second Senior Martial Sister Jiang Nanmu was about to help the Sword Sect disciples lift Cui Xiaoxiao.

However, the wretchedly struggling Xiaoxiao had her hands clenched tightly in the dirt. Raising her head with tousled hair framing one exquisite eye, the red birth mark under it seemed on the verge of bleeding, lending her gaze a ferocious glint.

“…Thank the Sect Master Qin for his kindness, but this girl has no fortune to receive such goodwill. I appreciate the thought!”

Cui Xiaoxiao knew that Qin Lingxiao had deliberately timed this “invitation” when she would be suffering under the demonic malice’s torment.

He had calculated that in this state of shameless agony, she would be forced to beg for his assistance. But the more Qin Lingxiao tried to deliberately manipulate her, the less Xiaoxiao wanted to oblige him.

Having grown up fending for herself on the streets, if she didn’t have a stubborn streak, wouldn’t even stray dogs come bully her?

Beneath Cui Xiaoxiao’s genteel demeanor lurked a vicious determination that wouldn’t even spare her own life when she got serious!

  • Mistaken Era – Chapter 12

    Mistaken Era – Chapter 12

At this moment, Ji Wuqi discovered that there was a talisman seal on the back of the bronze case. When the Talisman Sect disciples saw it, they gasped in shock.

Although talisman patterns in the world followed similar principles, there were slight differences in the strokes. For example, the talisman patterns of Lingshan Talisman Sect always had an inverted hook at the end.

Disciples of Lingshan could recognize their sect’s talismans at a glance. And at the end of this talisman pattern, which appeared ancient for exorcising demons, there was indeed a hooked stroke representing the personal calligraphy of their master Tang Youshu.

Ji Wuqi reverently paid respects, then stated firmly: “There’s no doubt, this was left behind by our master!”

At that moment, the talisman on the case drifted down, and the case opened up.

Everyone looked inside and saw a small wooden carving. The carving appeared to be an ancient serpentine deity with a human face and snake body.

The carving had hollow eyes and a carved mouth that seemed to be smiling yet not smiling. Staring at it for too long made one shudder involuntarily.

The several of them looked at each other, and Ji Wuqi bravely reached out to grab it first, but was driven back by the surging chill emanating from the carving before he could touch it.

Jiang Nanmu and A´Yi also tried grabbing it but failed, repelled by the chill from the carving.

Cui Xiaoxiao, always prudent, wanted to stay far away from this ominous carving emanating devilish energy.

But strangely, it seemed like there was a voice whispering in her mind, urging her to quickly pick up the carving.

Almost unconsciously, Xiaoxiao stretched out her hand towards the carving and easily lifted the wooden statue.

It seemed her extremely yin destiny, which made her blood special, also made her unafraid of the extreme chill clinging to the carving.

However, the Senior Martial Brother stubbornly believed that because she was influenced by the demon pearl, she had started aligning with the demonic path, which was why she could pick up this clearly sinister object.

But after Xiaoxiao held the carving for a while, the chill gradually faded, allowing the others to also examine it. However, no matter how they looked, they couldn’t find anything special about the carving.

Cui Xiaoxiao stared intently at the carving’s face, feeling there was something missing from the hollow eye sockets.

Engraved on the back of the carving was a line of Sanskrit script. Since the Senior Martial Brothers couldn’t understand it, they decided to put it away for now and find someone who could interpret the Sanskrit script.

However, Cui Xiaoxiao was adamantly against keeping the carving, even suggesting burning it, due to the overly realistic nightmare she had.

Ji Wuqi refused to let her, stating that since the case containing the carving was sealed by their master from two hundred years ago, if there was some shocking demonic conspiracy, wouldn’t the Lingshan Talisman Sect be first among the palaces and sects to achieve great merit?

Although Xiaoxiao, as the sect leader, vehemently objected, she could only watch helplessly as the Senior Martial Brother put both the carving and the case into his pack.

As a result, whenever they set out again, Xiaoxiao always felt an inexplicable chill emanating from the Senior Brother’s pack, as if a pair of eyes were coldly staring at her.

Xiaoxiao planned to seize an opportunity to discard it, but the Senior Brother guarded the demonic object closely, not allowing anyone near it.

When evening meditation time came, the usually unenthusiastic Cui Xiaoxiao surprisingly found a small hill away from her martial siblings, laid out a soft mat, and entered meditation early.

She was so active for a reason. Ever since that night, she always felt like there was a voice in her mind misleading her.

Taking the wrong path and coming to Chixizhou was one instance, and going against her willtouch that carving was another.

Xiaoxiao wasn’t muddle-headed enough to misread a map, much less court danger by grabbing that stupid serpent carving.

It seemed she was still being influenced by the demon pearl, unconsciously doing things against her will whenever her willpower was weak. If she didn’t figure out what was going on, and let the voice in her heart control her, there would be more trouble ahead.

So she entered meditation early to see if she could enter the dream realm and understand what exactly the Blood Demon from that nightmare was.

To prevent any accidents, Cui Xiaoxiao cut open two of her fingers before meditating, letting fresh blood flow out to ward off sneak attacks from the Blood Demon.

Perhaps afraid of Xiaoxiao’s blood scent, the Blood Demon did not appear. But after entering meditation, the strange voice in her heart grew clearer.

“Little girl, are you looking for me? Don’t bother, your bloodline has suppressed me and I can’t move for now…But don’t think you can easily get rid of me either!”

Cui Xiaoxiao silently asked with her eyes closed, “Who are you, and what exactly do you want to do?”

The voice seemed to yawn lazily, then said, “Me? Isn’t the name you gave me ‘Greed’? Your talisman damaged my primordial energy, so I could only attach to a living host. Who knew you’d have a physique that restrains me…”

“Don’t worry, when I find a suitable opportunity, I won’t stay in your body for even a moment!”

“Were you the one who lured me to Crimson Crake State? Just to make us find that carving? What exactly is so special about it?”

Cui Xiaoxiao closed her eyes and asked a few more questions, but the demon pearl seemed too lazy to answer, only yawning and saying, “Why ask so much, you’ll find out eventually. Oh, by the way, my malice has already started spreading through your body. Little girl, you’d better stay strong and not die too quickly…”

After that, it seemed to be extremely tired and no longer responded no matter how Xiaoxiao called out.

When Cui Xiaoxiao opened her eyes after finishing meditation, she was almost startled to see three of her martial siblings squatting in front of her, staring like at a monkey show.

Jiang Nanmu looked at the junior sect leader admiringly and whispered, “Junior Sister, what insight did you gain? How did your cultivation advance by a day’s journey in such a short time? It’s only been a few days, but during meditation, auspicious vapors were rising from your crown – you almost entered the small celestial cycle!”

Indeed, while Xiaoxiao meditated, wisps of hot air had continuously risen from her crown, and her body emanated a spiritual light similar to the Heaven-Protecting Armor of the Sword Sect disciples.

Though her light was still very faint, far from the disciples of the Nine Mystic Sword Sect, it definitely surpassed her three martial siblings, showing great potential to surpass them.

Cui Xiaoxiao was stunned to hear this – she had no special method. When others meditated, they only needed concentration and relaxation. But when she meditated, she had to battle the demon, ready for a life-or-death struggle at any moment.

Perhaps it was precisely because of this that her cultivation astoundingly doubled in an extremely short time when she meditated…

She recalled the origins of the demon pearl – it was the turbid energy that Apocalypse Wei had refined from his body, which meant the demon pearl had accompanied Wei for a long time.

Back then, Wei’s cultivation had also made a meteoric advance. Perhaps like her now, he had periodically subjugated the demonic nature within, inadvertently achieving the effect of advancing by a day’s journey…

Thinking of this, Cui Xiaoxiao sighed and said to her martial sisters and brothers: “I really wish I could share this method with you all…why don’t you take over the demon pearl?”

The other three immediately shook their heads vigorously.

Over the next two days, the demon pearl did not disturb Xiaoxiao again, lying dormant and silent as if hibernating.

Because of the excessively demonic nature of this demon pearl, Xiaoxiao had diligently studied her master’s secret manuals these past few days.

Unlike the traitorous disciple Qin Lingxiao, Tang Youshu, though not approving of his master Wei Huo’s descent into demonic ways and the crimes he committed while demonized, still maintained the due reverence of a disciple towards his master. Even though Wei Huo later became demonized and made grave mistakes, Tang Youshu only lightly described it as “invaded by demonic qi, not acting of his own will” to explain his master’s actions.

As for the demon pearl refined from Wei Huo’s body, Tang Youshu did not record too many details about it.

However, he did emphasize one point – Wei Huo’s bane was the blood of those with extreme yin constitutions. It could dissolve Wei Huo’s demonic cultivation. If such blood fell into the hands of a great cultivator, the consequences for Wei Huo would be unimaginable.

So Wei Huo had always sought out such people in order to eliminate them.

When Cui Xiaoxiao read this, she gasped in realization. She finally understood why, when the master learned of her ten-injury destined fate, he seemed pensive but said her fate was actually very good.

If she had been born two hundred years earlier, she would have been hunted down by that half-human, half-serpent demonic lord.

In that case, having been born two hundred years later was truly a stroke of good fortune for her.

After understanding the wondrous property of her extremely yin-natured blood against which even the Demon Sovereign Wei Huo was wary, Xiaoxiao no longer felt the demon pearl’s invasion was anything special. Since her blood could subdue even Wei Huo from back then, how could the demon pearl refined from his core do anything to her?

That day, when the sun rose, they prepared to depart again.

Ji Wuqi and A Yi were not too particular, ready to set out without washing up.

Cui Xiaoxiao and Jiang Nanmu were girls, so they took a bit more time washing up together by the stream.

As Xiaoxiao squatted down to scoop water, almost unconsciously recalling the scene from her dream where she controlled her own blood to repel the Blood Demon, an idea struck her.

That feeling had been so realistic that even after a few days, the memory was still vivid.

Her continuous days of diligent meditation left her dantian feeling full, like someone who had finally eaten their fill and was brimming with energy, wanting to expend it playfully.

Thinking this, as her fingertips disturbed the water’s surface, she silently recited a water-controlling spell with a slight mental effort.

At first, the water surface only rippled from her fingertips disturbing it. But in the next moment, a few water droplets vibrated like bouncing on a drumhead, trembling as they leapt from the surface.

Those leaping droplets quickly converged, growing longer as if a water snake was coiling and swirling upwards, birthed by the morning sun. They soon twined around Xiaoxiao’s slightly raised wrist like ribbons dancing joyfully around a celestial maiden…

Jiang Nanmu was washing her face when she looked up and saw her junior martial sister casually controlling the water flow.

She was so astonished that her mouth hung open and she could not speak for a long while, only pointing shakily at Cui Xiaoxiao.

At this moment, the impatient Ji Wuqi and A Yi came over to urge the two juniors to set out. But instead they saw Cui Xiaoxiao waving her arms, directing the swirling water flows up and down…

Now their eyes also bulged like eggs, mouths agape but unable to speak.

It must be understood that while controlling water and fire were basic skills for Talisman Sect disciples, not just any disciple could master them.

For example, after three years A Yi could only do minor illusions. And although Ji Wuqi could control fire, it was only for a brief moment.

Yet Cui Xiaoxiao, who previously knew nothing, could now wield water flows as easily as handling a snake, controlling them with graceful sweeps of her arms. Just what level of cultivation could support such ability?

How could her cultivation have suddenly spiked overnight like this?

Thinking of this, Ji Wuqi finally reacted, shouting: “Damnation! She…she’s demonized! Martial brothers, quick, get the talismans!”

  • Mistaken Era – Chapter 11

    Mistaken Era – Chapter 11

Soon, Cui Xiaoxiao felt like her body was being tightly enveloped by some viscous liquid, continuously sinking deeper and deeper…When she could no longer move at all, Cui Xiaoxiao’s heart calmed down instead.

She quickly closed her eyes and opened them again fiercely.

The supernatural ability she had awakened since childhood allowed her to not be misled by illusions, but rather see everything around her clearly.

In a sea of blood and filth, she saw a pair of cold, bizarre red-black eyes staring straight at her through the bloody mist.

Cui Xiaoxiao tried to negotiate: “May I ask the full courtesy name of this hero? If you have any requests, feel free to state them first. We can have a fair trade and make a win-win deal!”

Those eyes radiating intense killing intent seemed unprepared for this little girl to be so daring. And in this long period of time, she was the first person who could see it…

Cui Xiaoxiao’s words seemed to have an effect, as the force tightly coiling around her like a giant python loosened slightly.

Then a deep voice with a blood-curdling, murderous tone rang in her ears: “You…can see me?”

Seeing that this monster wrapped in dense blood seemed reasonable, Cui Xiaoxiao hurriedly said, “Yes, I’ve had some spiritual powers since childhood that allow me to see things ordinary people can’t.”

At this moment, a large palm seemed to condense from the blood sea pervading the entire cave, dripping thick black droplets of blood.

It grabbed Cui Xiaoxiao’s chin and those eyes seemed to move closer, sizing her up with disdain before coldly sneering, “Qin Lingxiao actually fancies trash like you…”

Cui Xiaoxiao never expected this mysterious blood demon to know about Qin Lingxiao’s intention to take her as his wife.

But from its tone, the blood demon, like Qin Lingxiao himself, looked down on her talent immensely.

So she gave a wry laugh and said, “I know my talents are shallow and unworthy of being Lord Qin’s wife…”

She thought the blood demon looked down on her and lamented on Qin Lingxiao’s behalf, so she just went along with the conversation.

But unexpectedly, this time the blood demon didn’t let her finish before forcefully gripping her chin tighter, its tone laced with killing intent: “Lord of the Qin Sect? He’s not worthy either!”

The sudden force painfully made Cui Xiaoxiao squint.

The little red mole at the corner of her eye trembled slightly under the shadow of her long lashes.

After the blood demon’s outburst, its bloody, muddy body transformed into a slithering serpentine shape.

It slowly coiled up to Cui Xiaoxiao’s ear, accompanied by the dripping sound, and deliberately lowered its voice menacingly: “Today, you suffered enough humiliation in front of that brat Qin Lingxiao, didn’t you? The way he looked at you was like looking at pig shit! You must be furious, angry that he disrespected your master and even more angry at your own lack of ability…Don’t worry, I’ll give you a chance. As long as you listen to me, I’ll make you incredibly powerful…powerful enough that everyone will have to kneel at your feet…”

As it spoke, its bloody, hot breath bored directly into Cui Xiaoxiao’s ears with a hoarse, magnetic tone that made her blood vessels pulsate…

For a moment, it seemed like something burst open in Cui Xiaoxiao’s heart. The helpless grievances from being sold as a child and drifting around, the humiliation and anger of being caught stealing on the streets and beaten – it all surged into her mind at once.

That’s right, she was too weak!

If she were as powerful as Qin Lingxiao and could kill those who humiliated her at will, how wonderful that would be…

As she thought this, she didn’t realize that the black blood coiling around her was becoming more and more dense and viscous, eventually forming a bloody cocoon enveloping her completely.

In that entrancing voice, Cui Xiaoxiao slowly closed her eyes…

So tired, and the surroundings were so warm and comfortable.

If only she could sleep for a while… But she still couldn’t settle into the warmth around her, always feeling like she had forgotten something important.

Just as she was about to sink into oblivion, a stinging pain came from her palm.

It turned out that earlier, Cui Xiaoxiao had pulled out the thin blade from her wristguard and grasped it in her palm – an ultimate skill she and her con-man adopted father practiced on the streets.

By pinching the thin blade between two fingers, one could instantly slice open a passerby’s money pouch or pack in the blink of an eye.

This had been Cui Xiaoxiao’s self-defense weapon in dangerous situations since childhood.

Her drifting life from a young age exposed her to all kinds of people. Once they saw she was a girl, there was no shortage of scumbags with ill intentions.

The repeated brushes with danger made Cui Xiaoxiao highly vigilant, and she would never easily trust those coaxing words.

So when the blood demon approached, she had already tightly gripped the blade in her hand.

Her drifter’s life had conditioned her body to make judgments before her mind could.

As a result, just as she was about to lose consciousness, the pain from the blade wound finally jolted her awake!

What was going on? How could she have been so easily swayed by an invisible monster and nearly fallen into a daze?

Could it be…this blood demon’s words had the effect of provoking one’s inner demons?

Cui Xiaoxiao remembered her demon exorcising experience at the silkworm farm and how the wife from the Bai family also became demonically possessed due to her inner demons, causing her to not even remember what happened after turning demonic.

It seemed this blood demon was trying to reenact that, making her the next Bai family wife!

Cui Xiaoxiao realized: she had to break free from the blood demon’s control as soon as possible – no way could she let it dominate her.

Although her talisman drawing wasn’t very effective, with the addition of her yin-yang blood, it seemed to have some use.

Thinking of this, she forcefully pulled out a talisman from her sleeve with her cut hand – it was the water dissolution talisman she had drawn earlier.

After soaking the talisman with her fresh blood, she suddenly flung it towards the blood demon while silently reciting an incantation, intending to use water to disperse the viscous blood binding her body.

But after several recitations, instead of the rushing of water, a hot flow like a slithering snake emerged from her cut wound.

Cui Xiaoxiao inwardly cursed – her sloppy incantation didn’t summon water, but was drawing out her own blood instead.

At this rate, she would bleed to death before the blood demon could make a move.

But to her disbelief, when the talisman led the threads of blood flowing from Cui Xiaoxiao’s palm to entwine around the blood demon’s body like vines, the blood demon suddenly widened its eyes in disbelief and let out an agonized groan before instantly flinging Cui Xiaoxiao away.

The incredulous blood demon muttered, “I can’t control you! What secrets lie in your blood? I don’t believe it! Aside from him, there’s actually a second person in this world who can escape my domination…”

Cui Xiaoxiao didn’t understand what it was rambling about. With her arm free, she cut another wound on her palm and continued guiding her blood while reciting incantations.

This time, Cui Xiaoxiao grasped the technique and could simultaneously summon two blood threads like spirit snakes to attack the blood demon.

The blood demon seemed to dread Cui Xiaoxiao’s blood and didn’t dare engage, only letting out an enraged roar before concealing itself in the depths of the cave with its bloody viscosity.

Cui Xiaoxiao couldn’t hear its final words.

At the same time the blood demon vanished, a counterforce rapidly propelled Cui Xiaoxiao upwards. As she was about to land, the feeling of weightlessness made her cry out in alarm.

But when she opened her eyes again, the drenched Cui Xiaoxiao found herself still sitting on her meditation mat, surrounded by a gentle breeze, the gurgling stream under the moonlight, and the campfire still burning nearby

The other three fellow disciples in meditation were startled by her outcry and opened their eyes towards her.

Ji Wuqi spoke harshly, “Instead of meditating properly, what are you screaming about? Hah, you must have dozed off and had a nightmare, didn’t you?”

Cui Xiaoxiao wiped the sweat from her forehead and stared hard at her surroundings, confirming she was indeed still meditating by the stream. Everything from before…seemed to really be just a dream.

But then, Jiang Nanmu widened her eyes looking at Cui Xiaoxiao’s chin: “Xiaoxiao, why is your chin red?”

Cui Xiaoxiao stood up and went to the stream, using the campfire’s faint light to examine her face.

There were indeed several red marks on her pointed chin.

She slowly reached out and touched those red marks – they were imprints from a large hand gripping, exactly like the spot the blood demon grabbed her chin in her dream!

So…was it really just a dream?

Moreover, in her right palm…she was still clutching the thin blade she kept hidden in her wristguard, the blood from her cut still dripping.

She suddenly became alert and quickly turned to look for her dog Jixiang, but it wasn’t by her side. When she called out, a familiar bark came from a nearby bush.

When they went over, they found the barking was coming from a cave hidden by the bush. Cui Xiaoxiao, recalling her dream, felt a chill down her spine. But the cave looked ordinary, not the eerie, ominous skeletal scene from her dream.

Jixiang’s barks also sounded pitiful. Not caring about anything else, Cui Xiaoxiao raised her torch, calling out to Jixiang as she tentatively entered.

Once inside, Cui Xiaoxiao let out a slight sigh of relief. It turned out Jixiang had gotten stuck in a narrow crevice while hunting rats, the faint squeaking indicating it had wedged itself in the rock crevice while catching rodents.

As the spirit dog of Lingshan Talisman Sect, it still needed to exhibit its own rat-catching abilities to earn meat.

Cui Xiaoxiao went over to dislodge the rock, allowing Jixiang to come out. But in the moment she pushed the rock away, the entire stone wall suddenly crumbled open, revealing what seemed to be a bronze casket in the crevice.

A’Yi, following behind, brushed off the dust and revealed the relief sculpture on the bronze casket.

Jiang Nanmu squinted her eyes in the firelight to make out the pattern and suddenly gasped loudly: “Don’t touch it!”

Cui Xiaoxiao also made out the pattern – at first glance it looked like a nine-petal curved lotus flower, very similar to the lotus brand on the foreheads of Qin Lingxiao’s Nine Mystic Sword Sect disciples.

However, this lotus was not red but an inky blackish-red, like polluted blood. Staring at it too long gave an unsettling feeling, as if one’s soul would be drawn into it.

“Second Senior Sister, could this be the emblem of the Nine Mystic Sword Sect?”

Jiang Nanmu said gravely, “If I’m not mistaken, this nine-curved black lotus is the demonic crest of the Demon Sovereign Wei Jie from two hundred years ago, who nearly upended the heavens and earth.”

Although Qin Lingxiao’s righteous Nine Mystic Sword Sect originated from the demonic cultivation of Wei Jie, the patterns of their attainment were similar. But this black lotus from two centuries ago brought bloody storms and ominous winds, making people pale at the sight of it.

Cui Xiaoxiao looked thoughtfully at the black lotus, suddenly recalling having seen it before.

That’s right, it was on the hilt of that old sword Qin Lingxiao used when slaying demons at the silkworm farm. So it turned out that when the rogue disciple Qin Ni exorcised demons without full mastery, he simply used the sword once belonging to his master Wei Jie.

But Qin Lingxiao seemed unwilling to let others see any connection between him and the master he personally killed, deliberately covering the hilt with a white cloth, which was rather suspicious…

  • Mistaken Era – Chapter 10

    Mistaken Era – Chapter 10

    Mistaken Era – Chapter 10

Cui Xiaoxiao couldn’t really explain it clearly to her two senior martial brothers, but she took the opportunity to describe it in detail to her second senior martial sister when they were alone picking wild vegetables.

After listening, Jiang Nanmu widened her eyes slightly and said, “You mean Qin Lingxiao not only helped dispel the poison for you, but also wants to marry you because of that?”

Cui Xiaoxiao was picking wild vegetables by the road with her old dog Jixiang. Upon hearing this, she wiped the sweat from her forehead and said, “Although the Nine Profound Sword Sect has a decent reputation, a traitorous disciple who could kill their own master can hardly be a righteous person. Although his cultivation is high, he is far inferior to our master in terms of being a decent human being! I once made a vow to our master to turn over a new leaf and help further develop our sect. How could I defile the honor of our sect by submitting myself to some lowly major sect just because I was coerced?”

Jiang Nanmu pondered for a moment. Ever since their master passed away, this Cui Xiaoxiao did indeed seem to have changed, no longer misanthropic, and her temper had improved considerably.

She couldn’t help but wonder what had happened during those three days and nights when the master took Cui Xiaoxiao into seclusion in the mountain cave before his passing. Why did the master seem to have expended all his energy after coming out of seclusion, rapidly withering before his eventual demise, while Cui Xiaoxiao appeared to have become a completely different person, no longer stubborn in character?

When Jiang Nanmu tentatively asked about it, Cui Xiaoxiao pressed her lips together and said softly, “Have you heard of the Tracing Back the Light technique?”

Jiang Nanmu shook her head. She had never heard of such a thing before.

Cui Xiaoxiao gave a bitter smile, no longer speaking, her hands gradually slowing down as she picked the wild vegetables, unable to stop reminiscing about those final moments she spent with her master…

Only she knew that Master Tang Youshu had exhausted all of his lifelong cultivation to invoke the Tracing Back the Light technique, just to allow her to re-witness that most unforgettable scene from her nightmares.

She had always thought that her mother had heartlessly sold her daughter because she disliked her ill-fated destiny and wanted to send the ominous star far away.

When little Xiaoxiao stood by the carriage, she saw with her own eyes that after the carriage carrying the tearful little girl left, her thin, haggard-looking mother emerged trembling from the dilapidated courtyard.

Her mother was also covered in tears, gazing at the departing carriage.

Her uncle was still complaining to her mother, “When others sell their daughters, even if it’s just an indenture, it’s at least ten taels of silver! You only got three taels, and then you gave that three taels to the carriage driver—what sense does that make! Sister, have you gone mad from illness?”

Her mother’s gaze turned cold as she said softly, “Even without the physician saying so, I know this illness of mine won’t last much longer. You all believed that itinerant practitioner’s words that if I’m gone, you won’t be able to keep my little Xiaoxiao either. If that’s the case, it’s better to find her a place where she can be clothed and fed. That tooth-puller is a local villager, a fairly reliable person. I took less silver so that he would take good care to arrange for Xiaoxiao to become a maid in a good household, giving her a secure position. I gave the carriage driver money in the hopes that he would take care of Xiaoxiao along the way… I sold a ten-year indenture contract, so after ten years when Xiaoxiao grows up, she can redeem herself and pursue her own path. As her mother, I’m incapable, so this is the last thing I can do for Xiaoxiao…”

Towards the end, her mother’s words became choked in her throat as she gazed vacantly at the departing carriage, full of reluctance to let go.

Meanwhile, the grown-up Xiaoxiao who stood by simply froze there in a daze.

At that moment, the boulder of cynicism and misanthropy that had accumulated in her heart from being abandoned by her mother seemed to have been moved aside.

It turned out her mother didn’t dislike her ill-fated destiny, but was terminally ill and unable to take care of her. Knowing her uncle’s family was unreliable, she could only make arrangements for Xiaoxiao’s future before her demise…

At that moment, shards of those deliberately forgotten past events came flooding back into her mind.

Ah, her dear mother had doted on her deeply since childhood. Although the family was poor and she couldn’t attend a private school, her literate mother had personally taught her to read and write…

On the night before she was sold, her mother had hugged her tightly as they slept. When she woke up the next morning, she found the hair by her mother’s face damp with moisture.

Little Xiaoxiao had wanted to call out “Mother,” but it seemed the word was stuck in her throat, only silent tears streaming down her cheeks.

When she tried to move her feet, the familiar family doors and loved ones had dissipated like smoke and clouds.

Tang Youshu used an extraordinary technique to briefly trace back through time, replaying past scenes.

Cui Xiaoxiao could only observe, like a spectator unable to speak to those from the past or truly reunite with her mother.

The master had once regretfully said that there were even more exquisite ancient techniques than tracing back time that could actually reverse the flow of time, freely traversing past and present.

Rather than his method that simply expended his lifelong cultivation to briefly manifest past scenes that quickly faded, without truly letting one be present within them.

However, such an exquisite method that defied the heavenly laws, even for those at the immortal ranks, could not be used frivolously lest they receive divine retribution.

Tang Youshu had expended his cultivation to restore the truth of when Cui Xiaoxiao was sold as a child, resolving the knot in this unruly girl’s heart.

He knew his own destiny was fulfilled, coupled with expending his cultivation which further depleted his Yang vitality. But if it allowed Cui Xiaoxiao to untie her heart knot and turn toward kindness, then his bitter efforts would not have been in vain.

Recalling her master’s parting words before his demise, Cui Xiaoxiao let out a long sigh.

The master did not consider her to have an ill-fated “Ten Injuries” destiny. On the contrary, such an extremely Yin destiny that severed mundane attachments could, with the right opportunity, manifest as an extraordinarily rare and capable talent.

Cui Xiaoxiao was originally fated for a short life, yet had lived to this age—evidence enough that this seemingly wretched destiny was in fact a crack in the heavenly mandate.

So-called “destiny” may be decreed by heaven, but it has the word “human” above it, meaning that although destiny is mandated by heaven, it is not immutable by human effort.

It’s just that the true study of destiny and symbolic arts have been too neglected by the world, giving rise to fallacies until the point of having the preposterous notion that one’s entire life is determined by destiny.

For the first time since she was cognizant, Cui Xiaoxiao heard someone say her Eight Characters were actually auspicious.

At the time, she doubted Tang Youshu was talking nonsense, only asking what if he had mistaken the plague god for a treasure due to his failing eyesight.

In Cui Xiaoxiao’s view, ever since her adopted father Tang Youshu had forcibly “bought” her, his physical condition had deteriorated day by day—clear evidence of her formidable ability to harm others.

However, Tang Youshu merely gave a faint smile: “My longevity was already depleted, what does it have to do with you, little girl? As for your path thereafter, it is entirely up to you. Although I told your senior martial brothers that you could bring glory to our sect, I was merely indulging them. This Lingshan Symbol Sect of ours is but a minor school I painstakingly established with my own blood and effort, without any great sectarian glory. In any case, I’m leaving our sect in your hands. Do with it as you wish, just don’t let your senior martial brothers starve, and my parting instructions will not have been in vain…Take them all down the mountain to experience the world. You…will undergo great transformation.”

And so the begging bowl of the Lingshan Symbol Sect was passed down into the hands of the young Cui Xiaoxiao.

Recalling her master’s earnest entreaty for her to revive their sect, Cui Xiaoxiao quickened the motions of her hands, no longer dwelling on the past but single-mindedly focused on digging up wild vegetables—at the very least she had to feed her fellow disciples for now.

Seeing Cui Xiaoxiao speak a bunch of disjointed words without answering her question, Jiang Nanmu sighed and no longer asked, joining Cui Xiaoxiao in digging instead.

They had now arrived at a place called Crimson Creek State, with streams winding everywhere. Their senior martial brother had utilized symbol spells to control the water, even catching a few plump fish from the streams.

With the plump fish and wild vegetables, tonight’s dinner became rather luxurious. Not only was there a fish head and vegetable stew, but also grilled plump fish to go with the flatbread they brought from Fei County, allowing the few of them to eat quite heartily.

The senior martial brother, who usually berated Cui Xiaoxiao harshly, was even amicable during dinner, personally helping himself to give Cui Xiaoxiao two extra servings of fish.

Before Cui Xiaoxiao could feel touched, Ji Wuqi spoke bluntly that she likely did not have many days left to live. He was simply being sympathetic to someone about to die.

When the day came for her demonic possession, he hoped she would not blame him, as the senior martial brother, for having to severely subdue her, a righteous extinction of evil kin.

There was no alternative, for exorcising demons and safeguarding the righteous path was the duty of a chivalrous hero. Even with her lofty position as sect leader, it would not matter.

Cui Xiaoxiao glanced at the somewhat evasive eyes of her second senior martial sister and junior martial brother, whose implied meaning was likely the same.

In truth, Cui Xiaoxiao was also very worried about being tainted by the malicious demon pearl’s possession, but after so long a period, besides the mark appearing on her wrist, there were no other abnormalities.

Hearing her senior brother’s words, she stated that even if she did become demonically possessed, she would likely be quite weak. After all, the demon pearl required attaching itself to someone harboring deep resentment in order to fully manifest its demonic nature.

However, if her senior brother kept constantly berating her with such harsh language, it would be easy for her to develop deep grievances. So he had better not blame her if she only went after Ji Wuqi to bite him when the time came!

Seeing that she still had the heart to joke around, Ji Wuqi glared at her fiercely once more before lowering his head to continue drinking the soup and eating the fish.

During the meal, Ayi took another look at the map and discovered that Cui Xiaoxiao had led them down the wrong path, adding quite a detour from their destination of Phoenix Pool in the Qilao Mountains.

Not quite believing it, Cui Xiaoxiao took the map and saw that it was indeed true! It seemed that yesterday at a fork in the road, after wavering for a bit, she had taken the wrong turn. Fortunately, it wasn’t too much of a detour. They just needed to backtrack in the morning to find the right path again.

After eating, it was time for their nightly cultivation practice.

Although the Symbol Sect focused primarily on talisman refinement, circulating true qi in the dantian was still required to catalyze the activation of spiritual talismans by absorbing the essence of the sun and moon.

Therefore, night meditation was almost a mandatory path for any cultivator.

Compared to her three fellow disciples, Cui Xiaoxiao lacked any foundation in meditation, inevitably prone to the mistakes of a beginner. Before long, her lower back started aching and she wanted to move around a bit.

When she half-opened her eyes, the other three disciples remained steadily focused in meditation. However, her old dog Jixiang who had been laying by her feet was nowhere to be seen.

She looked around and saw Jixiang following the stream, heading towards some dense bushes. She quickly got up to chase after him, but as she walked, a heavy fog gradually arose around her and the stream beneath her feet had inexplicably become viscous.

Cui Xiaoxiao abruptly stopped in her tracks and called out loudly for Jixiang.

In the empty space around her, there was no sign of the old dog. At that moment, a pitch-black mountain cave eerily materialized in front of Cui Xiaoxiao’s eyes. The sudden appearance of this cave was jarring, its shape monstrous, resembling a leering skull.

Cui Xiaoxiao scrutinized it briefly before turning to flee. She valued her life dearly and had no curiosity that would compel her to enter a cave of such sinister semblance!

But just as she turned, a tremendous suction force emerged from behind, instantly pulling her slender body in.

    Mistaken Era – Chapter 9

    Mistaken Era – Chapter 9

Sect Leader Qin seemed to have never considered what to do if Cui Xiaoxiao refused.

This was not out of arrogance on Qin Lingxiao’s part. Whether it was inner cultivation or outward reputation, Qin Lingxiao was impeccable.

In the whole world, it was not just his fellow disciple Ling Zhushan who wished to become his cultivation partner and ascend together. If he wished to take a wife, perhaps all the female cultivators in the world would happily let him choose.

And now, for him to voluntarily favor and take a liking to the pathetic female leader of a small, unorthodox sect, how could Cui Xiaoxiao not feel immensely honored and tearfully accept?

It was precisely for this reason that when Qin Lingxiao heard Cui Xiaoxiao refuse without hesitation, in a rather blunt manner, he finally looked at her in astonishment.

“…I do not have much patience, so you need not put on an act. If you are dissatisfied with my low-key marriage proposal and wish to broadcast it openly, I’m afraid your scheming would be wasted effort. I have no interest in mundane affairs and no time to play house with you.”

Qin Lingxiao instinctively assumed Cui Xiaoxiao was trying to negotiate for more benefits.

Cui Xiaoxiao resisted the urge to roll her eyes and bluntly said, “Sect Leader Qin, you seem to have misunderstood. I have absolutely no intention of marrying you. Nor do I wish to waste your time in cultivation.” You are overthinking this…”

Seeing that she showed no signs of coyly playing hard to get, Qin Lingxiao’s brow furrowed tighter, but he patiently explained, “Since you have absorbed the demonic bead, even if you are not demonically possessed, you will still suffer its malign effects. To quickly expel it from your body, there are only two methods: either kill you, or join me in secluded dual cultivation in the Cold Pool. Expelling the demonic bead requires seven days, during which you must focus all your efforts to assist me. Marrying you protects your reputation and avoids disgracing my Nine Profundities Sword Sect’s name. It is an inevitable compromise.”

What? She was afflicted by the demonic bead’s vile effects? And needed to share an intimate bath with this man to fully cleanse herself?

Was this really a proper method upheld by the righteous path?

Cui Xiaoxiao looked down at her wrist, suppressing her inner anxiety, before raising her head, “Thank you for the reminder, Sect Leader Qin. However, my Talisman Sect also has methods to exorcise demons and dispel toxins. Allow me to discuss with my fellow disciples upon return and see if we can resolve this ourselves. If the demonic bead is expelled, I will certainly hand it over to you voluntarily. What do you think?”

Cui Xiaoxiao knew that Qin Lingxiao’s urgency to “save” her could not simply be due to a desire to help others.

It seemed this Sect Leader Qin was determined to obtain the demonic bead, even at the cost of his marital ties, in order to fully acquire it as soon as possible.

Fortunately, this Qin person greatly valued his reputation in the righteous path, and she had not been demonically possessed yet. Otherwise, he would undoubtedly choose the first method without hesitation – killing the chicken to get the egg, cleaving her in half…

However, this did not mean that she would be cowed by his intimidation into obediently following his every order!

As Cui Xiaoxiao frowned in contemplation, Qin Lingxiao gradually realized that this woman did not seem to be deliberately scheming to marry him, nor did she understand the benefits of marrying him or the severity of the demonic bead’s malign effects.

Thinking this, he finally lowered his gaze and coldly stated, “You appear to have not cultivated for very long, so of course you would not understand what I just told you. I will give you some time to consider it properly before you respond. Of course, the prerequisite is that you do not become demonically possessed, for if that happens, it would actually make things easier for me.”

After speaking, he saw Cui Xiaoxiao cupping her fists to take her leave, showing no signs of changing her mind to accept his marriage proposal, which caused him some displeasure.

Although Qin Lingxiao usually immersed himself in cultivation, never sparing a glance at his admiring female pursuers, for an unorthodox female sect leader to disdainfully reject his overtures left him rather unhappy.

Thinking this, he could not resist adding a mocking remark, “Without a renowned master to guide one’s cultivation, it is like a woman marrying into the wrong family, wasting her entire life. However, if one can marry a diligently cultivating husband, it is akin to gaining a new master. You have already joined the wrong sect, do not miss this opportunity as well.”

For this Cui Xiaoxiao to pursue cultivation, yet join the tutelage of an incompetent like Tang Youshu, her efforts would ultimately amount to nothing more than a mortal life. If she were not so foolish, she should seize this marital opportunity and give herself a chance to change her destiny.

Regrettably, no matter how plainly he spoke, this girl with a fox-tail braid remained unmoved.

When he derided her for joining the wrong sect, Cui Xiaoxiao’s large eyes narrowed slightly, and a mocking smile appeared on her lips as she said, “Although I am ignorant of cultivation, I understand quite a bit about human affairs. I have never heard of powerful cultivators from various sects having the habit of taking lowly wives. If you look down on me so much, yet wish to marry me, Sect Leader Qin, you are quite contradictory. Moreover, you said I have a grievously ill-fated destiny, are you not afraid that by marrying me, I might suppress and kill you?”

As she spoke, she tilted her head slightly, a mischievous light flickering in her large eyes, her fox-tail-like long hair swaying behind her head in a vexing manner.

Qin Lingxiao realized this unorthodox female sect leader truly held grudges, simply because he had mentioned her ill-fated destiny, and she was now getting back at him.

Cui Xiaoxiao looked at Qin Lingxiao’s frosty expression and continued probing, “Your sect, from top to bottom, clearly looks down on my Mount Ling Talisman Sect. Why would you debase yourself by marrying someone from my unorthodox, deviant path? Is there really no benefit for you? Why would you make such a sacrifice? Sect Leader Qin, if you are unwilling to speak the truth, then we have no need to continue this discussion.”

In terms of cultivation, she was definitely no match for Qin Lingxiao. But when it came to the cunning to scheme against others…the despicable scoundrels and swindlers Xiaoxiao had encountered far outnumbered the demons this Qin had subjugated!

Qin Lingxiao was once again harshly rebuked by this sly girl’s words. Faced with such an untamed woman, he felt it was like casting pearls before swine and was too lazy to further persuade her, simply stating a final warning:

“Your bloodline is special, and you have also been afflicted by the demonic bead’s malign effects, which may manifest even more severely. When that happens, you may wish for death over life…Sect Leader Cui, take care…”

Cui Xiaoxiao was silenced for a moment by the description of the malign effects.

She recalled the demonic bead that had suddenly appeared in her pocket. Qin Lingxiao had said her bloodline was special – could the bead have been seeking her out?

If so, did the demonic bead intend to assimilate and possess her like the woman from the Bai family?

At this point, Qin Lingxiao could no longer be bothered to look at the sharp-tongued Cui Xiaoxiao.

He had made up his mind not to meddle further, letting Cui Xiaoxiao experience the torment of the demonic bead’s malign effects. Otherwise, the foolish girl might think she was an irresistible beauty who could bewitch any man into marrying her.

Thinking this, Qin Lingxiao waved his sleeve, summoning his sword-qi, and flew away gracefully on his sword.

Such a display of flying on one’s sword was not something ordinary people could witness.

Cui Xiaoxiao sensed the coolness in Qin Lingxiao’s tone just now, as if her unwise refusal had caused the Sword Sect Leader to view her as lacking discernment.

However, she had no time to dwell on the heavenly genius’ feelings, staring intently at the line on her arm instead.

Could what Qin Lingxiao said be true? Had she really been afflicted by the demonic bead’s malign effects?

When Cui Xiaoxiao returned and told her fellow disciples about the demonic bead’s ominous energy invading her body, they immediately jumped back in alarm.

Ayi was especially quick, slapping an exorcism talisman onto their Sect Leader’s forehead.

Cui Xiaoxiao peeled it off in annoyance, “I haven’t been demonically possessed yet!”

The second senior martial sister, Jiang Nanmu, awkwardly approached to examine Cui Xiaoxiao’s wrist, then seeming to recall something, instructed Cui Xiaoxiao to quickly reference their master’s secret manual for any solutions.

Cui Xiaoxiao flipped through it repeatedly, finding only this one relevant passage regarding toxins:

Their master Tang Youshu liked to meticulously record his daily cultivation life in an autobiographical secret manual. Around two hundred years ago, Tang Youshu had also visited the Soul-Shattering Serpent Cave that Wei Jie had breached, witnessing the might of the two-headed giant Soul-Shattering Serpent.

The Soul-Shattering Serpent dwelled in a deep valley beneath the Phoenix Pool of Lao Mountain. True to its name, once afflicted by its venom, even a great cultivator of a hundred years would suffer having their soul scattered.

Especially in the first three days of being poisoned, all the blood in one’s body would boil, preventing any focused effort to expel the venom. No matter one’s cultivation prowess, they would be boiled alive by their own blood in an excruciating death.

Back then at the Soul-Shattering Serpent Cave near the Phoenix Pool, Tang Youshu personally witnessed someone survive after being bitten.

That person was none other than his future master, the demonic Wei Jie!

At the time, Tang Youshu was very puzzled as to how his master had achieved this.

It was only later that he discovered Wei Jie had desperately captured the serpent after being poisoned, beheading it before slashing open his wrists to perform a blood transfusion, replacing his tainted blood with the serpent’s.

This unorthodox method allowed Wei Jie to survive by a thread, but also caused him to be covered in serpentine scales due to his blood being mostly replaced by the serpent’s, which drastically altered his temperament to be as vicious as a serpent’s.

However, Wei Jie did not seem to want to be permanently controlled by the serpent blood. So as his cultivation deepened, he devised a way to resolve it – refining the yin toxins within his body into a demonic bead to be expelled.

Unfortunately, this process greatly diminished his methods and cultivation level temporarily. It was precisely because of this that Qin Lingxiao had the opportunity to slay his master.

Upon reading this, Cui Xiaoxiao suddenly realized that the demonic bead within her had a profound connection to the Soul-Shattering Serpent, being the refined malign energies from Wei Jie’s demonic nature.

It seemed Qin Lingxiao’s words were not mere intimidation after all.

However, her master’s book also mentioned that there was a wondrous antidote grass within the Soul-Shattering Serpent Cave that had aided Wei Jie in surviving the venom.

Fortunately, their destination was indeed the Phoenix Pool of Lao Mountain, so perhaps they could find this unusual herb in the valley beneath.

With this thought, Cui Xiaoxiao felt slightly reassured.

Upon hearing that Cui Xiaoxiao had rejected Qin Lingxiao’s proposal, the second senior martial sister could not help but exclaim in amazement, “Oh heavens, Qin Lingxiao was willing to marry you in order to save you! And you actually refused!”

Her words were filled with endless regret. It seemed the exceptionally handsome and powerful cultivator Qin Lingxiao truly had a way of capturing women’s hearts. His pride was well-founded.

Even the eldest senior martial brother commented that if one could marry and jointly cultivate with Qin Lingxiao, one’s cultivation would soar rapidly. For Cui Xiaoxiao to reject without a second thought not only impeded her cultivation progress but also displayed muddled thinking.

However, he felt Qin Lingxiao’s thinking was also muddled for being willing to compromise his marital destinies to save a conniving woman. Could he have been bewitched by Cui Xiaoxiao’s pretty looks? If he truly lacked such determination, he might struggle to overcome the heavenly tribulation and ascend.

  • Mistaken Era – Chapter 8

    Mistaken Era – Chapter 8

    Mistaken Era – Chapter 8

As for the man with the surname Jin, after squandering his family fortune and offending the magistrate, coupled with his previous bullying and oppression of men and women in the village, he had offended countless people. Without the protection of officialdom and wealth, his luck had run out. The few fellow disciples from the Talisman Sect were too lazy to stay and witness his final fate.

Although the evildoer was punished and they vented their anger, the few disciples of the Talisman Sect still had an uncertain future ahead.

After finishing the last oily pancake they had brought from Fee County, Ji Wuqi let out a burp and said dejectedly, “The curse cast by our master is too domineering. Who knows when it will be lifted?”

Sitting behind Ji Wuqi and applying ointment to the burn on his neck, Ayi turned to ask the Sect Leader Cui Xiaoxiao, “Sister Cui, shall we head to a more lively town next? The taste of hunger is too unbearable!”

Cui Xiaoxiao was carefully drawing talismans with a brush dipped in cinnabar ink according to the sect’s secret manual illustrations. Hearing this, she did not respond but instead focused on her breathing and copied the patterns meticulously.

After drawing a few talismans and comparing them with those in the book, she nodded in satisfaction, at least now able to draw the patterns accurately. The talismans she drew this time were the basic Water Talisman that Talisman Sect disciples learned upon joining, using the five elements of Water to summon a nourishing rain when activated.

She put down her brush and waved one of the talismans in the air while chanting an incantation, hoping to summon rain.

The three fellow disciples widened their eyes, eager to witness their new Sect Leader’s abilities.

However, the talisman merely floated in the air before slowly drifting down, showing no signs of change.

Cui Xiaoxiao tried again with two more talismans, but they simply fluttered down like pieces of toilet paper.

Jiang Nanmu let out a disappointed sigh while Ji Wuqi burst into laughter, “I really thought you had some skills, but now it seems that night’s events were just a fluke!”

Cui Xiaoxiao pursed her lips briefly before dismissing the frustration and changing the subject, “Master once mentioned in the secret manual that the origin of our Talisman Sect is not Mount Ling. Master had a great opportunity at the Phoenix Pool in Lao Mountain in the past and learned the profundities of Talisman Sect from his master Wei Jie. If we wish to improve our cultivation, we should visit the Phoenix Pool in Lao Mountain.”

As the Sect Leader had spoken, the remaining disciples naturally obeyed. Cui Xiaoxiao prepared to pack her belongings but accidentally dropped a bead from her pocket.

Jiang Nanmu picked it up and realized it was the tarnished demonic bead from that night.

The bead appeared even duller than before, merely an unremarkable stone ball now.

Cui Xiaoxiao took the bead and examined it, puzzled as to how it had ended up in her pocket.

Although the demon had participated in its own subjugation, she had only taken its shed skin and had no intention of keeping the demonic bead.

However, Ji Wuqi was convinced Cui Xiaoxiao had taken it and sneered disdainfully, “A dog can’t change its habit of eating feces! You even swore in front of our master to reform, yet you shamelessly steal without asking!”

Cui Xiaoxiao earnestly refuted, “Do you think I could steal from the pocket of that heavenly genius who split the demon in half with a sword? I don’t know how this bead ended up in my pocket either.”

Ji Wuqi paused, finding her reasoning sound, and muttered to himself, “If you didn’t steal it, how could this bead have wandered into your pocket?”

Hearing this, they all looked at the demonic bead with trepidation. However, the dull, grayish stone showed no reaction, lying motionlessly on the table, making it difficult to sustain their fear for long.

Eventually, Ji Wuqi concluded that this greed-natured demonic bead was naturally attracted to greedy individuals. Coincidentally, among those present, Cui Xiaoxiao had the worst character as a deceitful woman, so it was understandable for the demonic bead to be drawn to her.

The second disciple, Jiang Nanmu, suggested returning the demonic bead to the Sword Sect’s leader, but Cui Xiaoxiao did not wish to deal with the Sword Sect again.

That Qin Lingxiao had spoken disrespectfully and dared to read her fortune, as if being handsome gave him the right to recklessly expose her scars!

While unaware of this object’s wonders, she could not leave it unattended, lest more innocents suffer like that woman from the Bai family.

With this in mind, Cui Xiaoxiao rummaged through her belongings and took out the Soul-Sealing Wooden Box left to her by her late master.

This wooden box was said to be made from the Paulownia wood where phoenixes nested in the Wilderness of Immortals. As the phoenix was a bird of fire, the Paulownia tree it nested in was also a Yang object capable of trapping demons and dispelling evil.

After placing the demonic bead inside the wooden box, Cui Xiaoxiao felt slightly relieved, planning to search for a artifact to dispel the bead’s evil when they returned to Mount Ling’s Talisman Sect’s Artifact Pavilion.

However, she did not realize that the moment the wooden box closed, the previously dull bead suddenly emitted a fleeting deep blue, ghostly glow…

On the way to the Phoenix Pool, the scenery was beautiful, but they soon encountered disciples from the Nine Profundities Sword Sect again.

The leading Sword Sect disciple handed Cui Xiaoxiao an elegant invitation.

Cui Xiaoxiao did not know its purpose, and the messenger, Jiang Zheng, arrogantly said, “The Master has invited Sect Leader Cui for a discussion at the nearby stream pavilion.”

Cui Xiaoxiao did not wish to go, suspecting that Qin Lingxiao had noticed the missing spirit bead and thought she had taken it, thus looking to pick a fight.

Regrettably, despite Ji Wuqi claiming to have used a concealment talisman to hide their tracks, they were still found by these Sword Sect disciples.

Cui Xiaoxiao was inclined to refuse, but the Sword Sect disciples were not polite, already holding a sword-qi blade to her neck.

As Ji Wuqi and the others were about to clash with the Sword Sect disciples, Cui Xiaoxiao quickly stopped them and agreed to meet Qin Lingxiao alone.

When she arrived at the stream pavilion, Qin Lingxiao was seated, controlling seven spirit swords with his sword-qi as they rapidly circled above his head, emitting a faint golden glow.

Upon noticing Cui Xiaoxiao’s approach, he gently snapped his fingers, recalling the swords before lightly tapping the jade table beside him, indicating for her to sit and drink tea.

For the esteemed leader of the preeminent Sword Sect to humble himself and invite a member of the lesser Talisman Sect for tea, others would have felt greatly honored.

However, Cui Xiaoxiao knew this was a trap and did not sit. Instead, she smiled and candidly said, “Sect Leader Qin, you wish to discuss something, don’t you? I’m not entirely sure how that bead ended up in my pocket. Since I participated in subjugating the demon, it’s not unreasonable for the spirit bead to belong to me. However, if Sect Leader desires it, I can understand and gift it to you to maintain harmony between our sects.”

This slippery rhetoric was honed from Cui Xiaoxiao’s experiences in the Jianghu.

Recognizing her inability to defeat Qin Lingxiao’s sword-qi, Cui Xiaoxiao proactively extended an olive branch to swiftly resolve the matter and avoid further trouble.

Hearing her words, Qin Lingxiao let out a cold laugh of disbelief and slowly drawled, “You didn’t take it?”

After the silkworm incident, the Sword Sect disciples had thoroughly investigated the new Talisman Sect Leader’s background and reported it to Qin Lingxiao.

A female pickpocket who had roamed the streets for years was claiming she didn’t steal something? Who would believe that?

Cui Xiaoxiao nodded, though not expecting this Sect Leader to believe her, as that was simply the truth.

She took out the Soul-Sealing Wooden Box from her pocket and handed it to Qin Lingxiao, hoping to swiftly resolve the matter.

As soon as Qin Lingxiao’s hand touched the wooden box, it suddenly burst into raging flames.

Startled, Qin Lingxiao hastily circulated his inner energy to strike the box away.

At that moment, a bright light flashed, and the previously dull demonic bead seemed to regain its energy, becoming translucent and glowing.

It agilely evaded Qin Lingxiao’s attempts to grab it, fleeing like a shooting star through the clouds, but then abruptly changed course and charged towards the standing Cui Xiaoxiao instead.

Caught off guard, Cui Xiaoxiao was struck by the bead, knocking her to the ground. She felt a surge of heat on her wrist and a scorching sensation in her chest before the demonic bead vanished without a trace.

As she tried to get up, Qin Lingxiao suddenly approached, grabbed her wrist, and rolled up her sleeve, revealing sinuous, snake-like talisman patterns etched onto Cui Xiaoxiao’s wrist.

“What is this?” Cui Xiaoxiao asked, enduring the pain in her chest.

Qin Lingxiao’s expression was complex, glaring at Cui Xiaoxiao as if he had swallowed dog feces, seeming indignant and reluctant.

Finally, he appeared to make a decision, slowly raising his eyes to meet Cui Xiaoxiao’s and asking, “It seems you are also aware that I must have this demonic bead…Since this aligns with your desire, I shall comply. I don’t know if you have previously chosen a cultivation partner?”

Huh? Cui Xiaoxiao did not expect Qin Lingxiao to suddenly ask such an unrelated question.

However, Qin Lingxiao did not seem interested in her answer, continuing, “You probably haven’t, otherwise you wouldn’t have schemed so elaborately against me. Regardless of the sect’s teachings, finding a suitable cultivation partner can double one’s progress. I have already formed my Golden Core and only need to undergo the final transformation into a Yuanying before ascending through tribulation. If you cultivate with me, it would bypass a hundred years of bitter cultivation…You should be aware that such a shortcut would not normally be available to you, but by deceiving me and absorbing the demonic bead, you have left me no choice but to comply with your desire…However, we shall keep this union simple. I do not wish to openly flaunt it to the world!”

Qin Lingxiao spoke as if forced to eat feces. But Cui Xiaoxiao did not think marrying him would be like consuming a ginseng fruit either!

She stared at him in bewilderment and hesitantly asked, “Sect Leader Qin…have you gone mad? I have a cooling talisman here, would you like one to clear your head?”

Qin Lingxiao was still in a foul mood, coldly stating, “You intentionally took the demonic bead and absorbed it into your body, clearly scheming for this marital relationship?…My Nine Profundities Sword Sect has always valued its reputation, so of course I will take full responsibility. But a forced marriage will not be sweet. Miss, you have schemed so elaborately, you had better not regret this later…”

He desperately needed the demonic bead to suppress the demonic nature within him. And this Cui Xiaoxiao had intentionally absorbed the bead, her motives were clear!

If he wanted to claim the bead for himself, he would either have to kill Cui Xiaoxiao or join her in secluded cultivation for seven days and nights.

Although the Talisman Sect of Mount Ling was not a major sect, it still focused on demon subjugation and exorcism, aligning with the righteous path. If he killed this scheming woman, it would tarnish the renowned Sword Sect’s reputation.

Secluded dual cultivation might not sound proper. But if he refused, word would spread that he had seduced and abandoned a woman, branding him as one who deceived women for lust.

For the present situation, his only option was to temporarily take her as his partner through a legitimate marriage, which would allow him to absorb the demonic bead, and they could discuss further later… Moreover, her bloodline was the counter to his demonic cultivation; if he found a suitable method, he might even permanently resolve his affliction.

By making her his wife, she would also be protected from being used against him by others with ill intent.

Qin Lingxiao had encountered countless women scheming to ensnare him before, but never imagined being deceived by such a wily vixen this time.

Amidst his vexation, he could only console himself: This woman has an unusual destiny, and her bloodline counters Wei Jie’s demonic nature, so marrying her might not be a total loss.

With this thought, Qin Lingxiao’s mood gradually calmed, his displeasure diminishing as he awaited the devious Talisman Sect Leader’s grateful response to his proposed marriage.
