Chapter 26: Immortal Sister, I Don’t Want to Work Hard Anymore!

The Two Polarities Sect had nine peaks, each guarded by a Peak Master and home to countless disciples.

Among the nine peaks, the tenth was the most treacherous and imposing.

Its summit was shrouded in a mystical mist, and nestled against its slopes was an elegant pavilion overlooking a field of flowers. A lush bamboo forest stood tall, its verdant canopy seeming to reach for the heavens.

Rumor had it that the tenth peak was the secluded cultivation ground of the Two Polarities Sect’s Sect Master, and the elegant pavilion was built for her.

It was a rumor because most disciples had never seen the legendary Empress. Except for her personal disciples, no one was allowed near the tenth peak.

    However… it wasn’t just a rumor.

Within the simple and pristine pavilion, a veiled woman sat gracefully, her gaze distant.

She wore a moon-white dress that accentuated her alluring figure, and her eyes, cold and clear, held a captivating allure, like a blooming lotus—beautiful yet untouchable.

Even with the veil obscuring her face, one could imagine the breathtaking beauty hidden beneath.

“Master, I have something to report,” Lan Mulian said softly, her voice as cool and clear as her demeanor.

Standing before her was a woman in a raven-black dress, the night wind whipping her clothes around her, the fabric clinging to her ample bosom. Her hair was held in place by a simple jade hairpin. Despite her simple attire, she exuded an aura of unparalleled beauty and power.

When the Sect Master didn’t respond, Lan Mulian sighed softly.

“It’s nothing important, Master. I won’t disturb you any further.”

I’ll just stay within the sect until I reach the Nascent Soul Realm…

    She turned to leave.

“Your desire to leave the sect… is it related to the paper cranes you’ve been receiving?” the woman asked suddenly.

Lan Mulian froze, her hand hovering over the door. She turned to face her master, her voice still calm, yet tinged with an uncharacteristic emotion.

“You’re aware of such a trivial matter, Master?”

She hadn’t expected her master to know about her correspondence with a stranger. It seemed insignificant, a mere trifle.

“Those cranes fly to this peak every day. Even a fool would notice,” the Sect Master replied, turning her head slightly, revealing her face for the first time.

Her long, black hair cascaded down her back, framing her delicate features. Her profile was exquisite, her skin flawless.

She walked over to a nearby table and sat down, crossing her long legs elegantly. She rested her chin on her hand, her gaze fixed on her disciple.

She tapped her slender fingers rhythmically on the table, her expression thoughtful.

“Is he your Dao Companion?” she asked.

Lan Mulian shook her head. “I released a paper crane some time ago, and it seems someone found it. We’ve been exchanging messages, but he’s not my Dao Companion.”

“But you haven’t received any replies for the past two days?”

Lan Mulian bit her lip, her gaze dropping to the floor. “Perhaps he’s busy and hasn’t had time to reply,” she murmured.

As she spoke, she sensed something and turned her head towards the window.

She could feel her “Magical Treasure” returning.

“It seems your crane is back,” the Sect Master said, glancing in the same direction.

    … An Inborn Celestial Vessel.

If he ever became a disciple of the sect, the female elders would fight tooth and nail over him.

The Sect Master shook her head slowly, then began preparing tea. She picked up a black Go stone, her movements graceful and unhurried, as if playing a game against herself.

Lan Mulian left the pavilion and summoned a cloud with a wave of her hand.

The cloud descended obediently, hovering beneath her feet.

She stepped onto the cloud and drifted towards the approaching crane.

As she passed over a training ground, the disciples below looked up in awe.

    “Look, it’s Senior Sister Lan”

“Twenty-three years old and already at the peak of Core Formation, just one step away from Nascent Soul and becoming a terrestrial immortal… Her talent is truly remarkable.”

“And she’s beautiful, isn’t she? To marry such a woman… I’d gladly give up twenty or thirty years of my life,” one disciple sighed dreamily.

“Quiet! Do you want to get beaten up?” his senior brother hissed, silencing him.

The disciple realized he had attracted the attention of several nearby disciples, their gazes unfriendly.

He shot his senior brother a grateful look and fell silent, his gaze fixed on the beautiful woman gliding through the sky.

He watched as she disappeared from view, a wistful sigh escaping his lips.

Such a woman was destined to be beyond the reach of ordinary disciples like him.

“The crane came from the Two Polarities Sect. Could it be, the person I’ve been writing to is the daughter of a Peak Master?”

Mu Zhi’an, standing on Wei Mengrou’s flying sword, stared at the distant peak, his mind racing with possibilities.

He couldn’t help but entertain this theory. Judging by her tone, the crane’s owner had grown up in a privileged environment.

He just hadn’t expected her to be a disciple of the Two Polarities Sect.

And based on her words and demeanor, her status within the sect was likely quite high.

I wonder if I’ll have a chance to meet her during the next entrance examination.

And Mengrou said that black-robed man reacted to the crane… Could he be connected to the Two Polarities Sect as well?

Mu Zhi’an shook his head, pushing those thoughts aside. “Mengrou, we’re getting close to the Two Polarities Sect. Let’s head back.”

Trespassing on the sect’s territory before becoming a disciple could lead to trouble.

He wasn’t foolish enough to barge into someone else’s sect.

Wei Mengrou nodded, turning the sword around.

Suddenly, she paused, sensing something. She turned her head slightly.

    Mu Zhi’an followed her gaze.

A woman in white, riding a cloud, was approaching them from the distance.

He wasn’t surprised. They were near the foot of the Two Polarities Sect. It was only natural for them to be noticed.

However, they hadn’t trespassed, so a simple explanation should suffice.

As he thought this, the woman arrived before them, her movements graceful and elegant.

A veil obscured her face, but her figure was alluring, her demeanor cool and refined.

    Mu Zhi’an was captivated.

Then, his gaze snagged on the object in her hand.

    A paper crane?

He’d found the missing piece of the puzzle.

He studied the woman more closely, a strange feeling settling in his gut.

He wasn’t sure about her identity. The crane’s owner, in her letters, had sounded cheerful and lively. But this woman exuded an aura of aloofness, a coldness that kept people at a distance.

    He couldn’t reconcile the two.

“We were merely passing through. We didn’t enter the sect’s territory,” Wei Mengrou said.

    Lan Mulian nodded curtly.

She had come to retrieve her crane and had noticed them near the sect’s border.

    She glanced at Wei Mengrou.

A Core Formation expert as a servant… This young man must be from a powerful family.

    And his talent wasn’t bad.

But only at Foundation Establishment… It seems he’s wasting his potential.

Lan Mulian shook her head inwardly, losing interest. “If there’s nothing else, please leave,” she said.

She had no desire to chat with them. She turned her cloud around, preparing to leave.

“Since you’re already down here, Senior Sister, why not take this opportunity to run away from home?” Mu Zhi’an asked suddenly.

    Lan Mulian froze.

She turned to face him, her eyes widening in surprise behind her veil.

Mu Zhi’an, seeing her reaction, had his answer.

It was her… the owner of the paper crane…

Chapter 25: The Two Polarities Sect*

After inquiring about Bai Yuanfeng’s location, Mu Zhi’an returned to the Mu Manor and sought out Elder Ren, who was enjoying a cup of tea in the main hall.

Upon hearing of Mu Zhi’an’s predicament, the elder agreed to accompany him without hesitation.

To Mu Zhi’an’s surprise, Bai Ruoxi revealed that her father wasn’t recuperating at the Bai Manor, but at a secluded residence several miles west of the city gates.

As they traveled towards their destination, Mu Zhi’an sat in the carriage, his brow furrowed in thought.

Something had been bothering him since they’d set out. The more he thought about it, the more suspicious it seemed.

Bai Ruoxi, sensing his unease, asked softly, “What’s on your mind, Young Master Mu?”

“Miss Bai, when was the last time you saw your father?” Mu Zhi’an asked.

“I visited him yesterday. He seemed to be recovering well. He should be back to full strength in a month or two,” she replied.

Her expression was somber, her usually bright eyes clouded with sadness. She was still reeling from the revelation of her mother’s betrayal.

“That’s what I find strange” Mu Zhi’an murmured.

He met Bai Ruoxi’s confused gaze and continued, “If your mother betrayed the Bai family, why didn’t she eliminate your father as well? Why allow him to recover peacefully?”

“Even injured, my father is still a Core Formation expert. A Foundation Establishment cultivator wouldn’t stand a chance against him,” Bai Ruoxi replied.

“What about with the Gongsun family’s help?” Mu Zhi’an countered.

“If they knew your father’s return route and ambushed him, why not finish the job?”

    Bai Ruoxi froze.

He was right… If they knew her father’s location, why hadn’t they eliminated him?

    Because of lingering affection?

    Or was there another motive?

As Bai Ruoxi pondered this, Mu Zhi’an shook his head.

“It’s pointless to speculate. We’ll ask your father for details when we see him.”

They arrived at a secluded cabin.

Bai Ruoxi stepped out of the carriage and turned to the others. “Please wait here for a moment. There’s a barrier around the cabin. I need to inform the guards of your arrival.”

She walked up the steps and entered the cabin.

Moments later, she emerged and beckoned them inside.

They entered the cabin and saw a pale-faced man lying in bed. The man was rugged, with a messy beard. If anyone knew he was Bai Ruoxi’s father, they would wonder how he could possibly have fathered such a beautiful daughter.

“Greetings, Uncle,” Mu Zhi’an said respectfully.

Bai Ruoxi’s father sat up, supported by a guard.

“Make yourselves comfortable,” he said, his voice surprisingly strong despite his weakened state.

Mu Zhi’an nodded and took a seat, deciding to get straight to the point.

“Uncle, Ruoxi and I came here to tell you something”

Bai Ruoxi’s hand instinctively tightened around her skirt, her expression conflicted.

    The atmosphere grew tense.

Mu Zhi’an glanced at the two guards.

“Leave us,” Bai Ruoxi’s father said, understanding Mu Zhi’an’s unspoken request. He gestured for the guards to leave.

To prevent the family scandal from spreading, Mu Zhi’an also asked Elder Ren and Wei Mengrou to step outside.

Once they were alone, Mu Zhi’an hesitated for a moment, then spoke. “This concerns Madam Bai”

Bai Ruoxi’s father’s eyes widened in surprise. “My wife?”

Mu Zhi’an nodded, then recounted what he’d witnessed at the Bai Manor.

Bai Ruoxi, her expression a mixture of sadness and anger, confirmed his story.

Her father remained silent for a long moment. He ripped off the bandages covering his chest, revealing his muscular physique. Despite his pale complexion, he exuded an aura of strength, more like a warrior than a Core Formation cultivator.

He looked at Mu Zhi’an, a knowing smile on his face. “To be honest, my wife doesn’t love me. But she would never betray the Bai family.”

“She’s always been the one managing the family. She has power, wealth… what would she gain by betraying us?”

A glimmer of hope flickered in Bai Ruoxi’s eyes. She looked at her father. “Then why… why was she with Gongsun Xiong?”

Her father sighed. “She doesn’t love me, and she doesn’t love Gongsun Xiong.”

“She never wanted to marry into the Bai family. I thought after all these years, our bond as husband and wife would mean something to her. But…” He trailed off, another sigh escaping his lips.

“Then who… who does she love?” Bai Ruoxi couldn’t help but ask.

Her father didn’t answer. He looked up at the ceiling, his eyes filled with a distant longing.

It’s a shame he doesn’t smoke. I’d offer him a cigarette and let him reminisce… Mu Zhi’an thought to himself.

“From the moment I married her, I knew she wouldn’t be content as the mistress of the Bai family,” her father said finally.

“What does she want?” Mu Zhi’an asked.

Bai Ruoxi’s father looked at him, his gaze meaningful. “Power. And wealth.”

Mu Zhi’an frowned, confused. Then, as he pieced together the events of the past few days, realization dawned. His expression stiffened.

“She wants to control all three families?” he asked softly.

Her father had said that Bai Yuanfeng had never wanted to marry into the Bai family. That explained her attempts to eliminate him.

And then she’d tried to marry her daughter into the Mu family… The Mu family was heavily guarded, making it difficult for her to infiltrate. But marrying Bai Ruoxi into the family would give her an inside man.

All she had to do was pit the two families against each other.

No, wait… Given the Mu family’s power, it would be more like pitting a tiger against a wolf!

If Mu Zhi’an hadn’t awakened his memories, he would have readily agreed to help Bai Ruoxi. After their marriage, the Mu family would naturally intervene to protect the Bai family.

And as Bai Yuanfeng’s son-in-law, Mu Zhi’an would surely trust her, allowing her to slowly gain control over the Mu family as well.

    Her father knew everything.

He was playing on a whole other level… “So… your injuries were also part of her plan?” Mu Zhi’an asked.

Bai Ruoxi’s father grinned. “If I’d known, I wouldn’t have taken that route back to the city. Who knew she’d target me first instead of Gongsun Xiong?”

    Mu Zhi’an: “…”

So, the Bai family’s downfall wasn’t solely due to being targeted by the Gongsun and the Chamber of Commerce. It was because, without Bai Yuanfeng managing things, this brute of a man was clueless when it came to scheming… Mu Zhi’an couldn’t help but feel a sense of disbelief.

“Uncle, I brought Elder Ren with me. If you’re willing, he can examine your injuries,” Mu Zhi’an said, quickly changing the subject.

He was afraid his brain would melt if he continued this conversation.

Bai Ruoxi’s father studied the handsome young man before him. “Why are you helping me?”

Mu Zhi’an considered this for a moment. “For love,” he replied.

Bai Ruoxi blushed, stealing a glance at him.

Her father, however, understood. He frowned. “Years ago, I made a promise to that brute from the Ye family. If we had sons, they would be sworn brothers. If we had daughters, they would be betrothed. Are you asking me to break my word?”

“That promise, that forced marriage, is the reason for Madam Bai’s betrayal, isn’t it?” Mu Zhi’an said, his words hitting a nerve.

It was clear that Bai Yuanfeng, forced into a loveless marriage, was now seeking revenge.

It was ironic that someone who had been forced into a marriage was now forcing her own daughter into one… Mu Zhi’an shook his head inwardly.

“Father, I’ve already broken off the engagement,” Bai Ruoxi said suddenly.

Her father’s eyes widened, and for a moment, a surge of powerful energy erupted from him. He glared at his daughter. “You—!”

Bai Ruoxi met his gaze, her own unwavering. “I don’t love Ye Yu.”

Her father’s anger subsided, and he sighed. “That Ye boy might be a cripple now, but I see potential in him. He’ll achieve great things one day.”

He looked at his daughter, his gaze filled with a mixture of disappointment and concern.

She might regret this decision one day.

“Whether he achieves greatness or not is irrelevant, Father. I simply don’t love him,” Bai Ruoxi replied softly.

Some people are just unlikeable. No matter what they do, no matter how hard they try, they will always be met with disgust and rejection.

The more Ye Yu simped, the more Bai Ruoxi despised him.

Most women didn’t appreciate desperate suitors.

Seeing her resolute expression, her father sighed. “I won’t interfere. Arranging that engagement without your consent was a mistake.”

He turned to Mu Zhi’an. “Thank you, Nephew Mu. If my injuries can be healed quickly, I’ll be in your debt.”

He knew Elder Ren was a renowned physician. Perhaps he could accelerate his recovery.

Moments later, the white-haired elder entered the cabin.

“Elder Ren, it’s been a while,” Bai Ruoxi’s father greeted him with a nod.

The elder simply hummed in response and reached out to check his pulse.

    Mu Zhi’an waited patiently.

After a while, Elder Ren opened his eyes.

    He shook his head slowly.

“I can concoct a pill that will heal your injuries within a month.”

“But a faster recovery… is unlikely.”

    Mu Zhi’an’s heart sank.

    A month…

By then, the Bai family would be finished.

And his duel with Ye Yu was in two days. The Gongsun family was wavering, and the black-robed man was lurking in the shadows.

He had hoped to have Bai Ruoxi’s father and the two Core Formation experts from the Mu family present as a precaution.

It seemed he would have to find another solution.

Elder Ren sighed. “Actually, there is a rare herb that could heal you within a day… If we could obtain it.”

Bai Ruoxi’s eyes lit up. She looked at the elder. “What herb is it, Elder Ren? I’ll have someone search for it.”

The elder shook his head. “It’s called the Beast King Vine. It only grows in places rich in spiritual energy. The only place you’ll find it is… within the Two Polarities Sect.”

The Two Polarities Sect… Their hopes, which had soared momentarily, were dashed.

That’s not helpful at all… Mu Zhi’an thought to himself, sighing inwardly.

Tianxuan City was hundreds of miles from the Two Polarities Sect. And the sect didn’t allow outsiders to enter, let alone harvest their herbs.

They bid farewell to Bai Ruoxi’s father and returned to the Mu Manor. Mu Zhi’an instructed a servant to escort Bai Ruoxi to a guest room.

She’d been through a lot today. She needed rest.

Mu Zhi’an was also exhausted. He was about to head to his room when he passed his study and paused, noticing a faint white glow emanating from within.

He pushed open the door. Three paper cranes, emitting a soft, white light, rested on the windowsill, their forms imbued with spiritual energy.

I was so busy these past two days, I almost forgot to reply… He’d completely forgotten about the cranes. He entered the study, lit the candles, and unfolded the first two cranes.

The first contained the usual complaints, anxieties about whether to run away from home, and requests for advice.

The second was a concerned inquiry about his well-being, asking why he hadn’t replied to her previous message.

    Clearly, she was worried…

To be so invested in an “online relationship,” to eagerly await his replies… It was a testament to how boring her life must be.

He unfolded the third crane. Unlike the previous messages, which had been one-sided outpourings of anxieties and complaints, this one was filled with warmth and concern…

Mu Zhi’an smiled, his heart warming.

He sat down, picked up his brush, dipped it in ink, and penned a heartfelt reply, expressing his longing for her.

Of course, he didn’t get too cheesy.

He folded the paper into a crane and tossed it out the window.

Now that they were closer, it was time to turn up the charm.

Otherwise, she might end up seeing him as just a “friend.”

“Speaking of which. Where does this crane fly to?”

He watched as the crane soared into the night sky, a flicker of curiosity in his eyes.

He jumped out the window and followed it.

The crane’s speed increased. At first, he managed to keep up, but his stamina dwindled, and he could only watch as it flew out of Tianxuan City, disappearing into the distance.

Foundation Establishment cultivators couldn’t fly on swords. He could only watch helplessly.

Suddenly, a hand tapped his shoulder.

He turned to see Wei Mengrou standing on a flying sword. “Get on,” she said softly.

The aloof beauty wore a goose-yellow dress, a silk sash cinched around her slender waist, accentuating her alluring curves. Even in boots, she was almost as tall as him.

She had been following him discreetly since he’d left the manor.

As expected, Mengrou is the most reliable… Mu Zhi’an didn’t hesitate. He stepped onto the sword and wrapped his arms around her waist, feeling the softness of her body against his.

    Soft, fragrant…

Even if they didn’t catch the crane, this was a win. Mu Zhi’an thought to himself, enjoying the moment.

Wei Mengrou stiffened, glaring at him.

“I’m just afraid of falling,” Mu Zhi’an explained.

“If you move again, I’ll throw you off,” Wei Mengrou replied coldly.

She guided the sword upwards, and they shot off into the night sky, pursuing the distant crane.

Time passed, the only sound the rush of wind in their ears.

After nearly two hours, Mu Zhi’an’s focus finally shifted from “Mengrou is so soft and fragrant, and she’s really big” to the paper crane fluttering ahead like a butterfly.

    Something felt wrong.

He’d assumed the crane belonged to some young lady from Tianxuan City or a neighboring city… But now, it seemed the owner was from somewhere else entirely?

As he pondered this, a white mist enveloped them, the air thick with spiritual energy. A single breath was invigorating.

Before he could fully appreciate the sensation, he saw several mountain peaks looming in the distance.

The crane was heading towards one of the peaks, its paper wings flapping gracefully.

Mu Zhi’an stared at it, his voice barely a whisper.

“This crane… it’s from the Two Polarities Sect?”

Chapter 24: Time to Meet the Parents

After a moment of stunned silence, Bai Ruoxi, unable to believe what she was seeing, tried to get a better look through the window. Mu Zhi’an grabbed her hand, placing a finger to his lips and hushing her.

Peeking at Bai Yuanfeng wouldn’t be a problem. She was a relatively weak cultivator. But Gongsun Xiong was a different story.

Even though he seemed relaxed in Bai Yuanfeng’s presence, and Wei Mengrou was helping to mask their aura, there was no guarantee they wouldn’t be detected.

Despite their precautions, Mu Zhi’an could hear the sounds of laughter and playful banter coming from the room.

    That alone was enough confirmation.

He glanced at Bai Ruoxi, her face pale with shock. He knew this was a devastating blow to her.

He called her name softly, but she didn’t respond.

Seeing her unresponsive state, he swept her into his arms and carried her away from the Bai Manor, their movements swift and silent.

It wasn’t until they were back in the carriage, the rhythmic clatter of hooves filling the air, that Bai Ruoxi seemed to come back to her senses. She stared out the window at the passing scenery, her expression a mixture of shock, anger, and despair.

It was all clear now. That’s why Bai Yuanfeng had refused to relinquish the Meridian Connecting Pill. That’s why her father had been ambushed.

It wasn’t a coincidence. It was a carefully orchestrated plan, a betrayal by Bai Yuanfeng, working in collusion with the Gongsun family.

“Young Master Mu, why would my mother do this?” she asked softly, turning to look at him. “What does she gain by destroying our family?”

Mu Zhi’an sighed. “She gains nothing.”

“But human emotions and actions are often irrational. If we could understand everyone’s motives through simple logic, there wouldn’t be so many shocking crimes in this world.”

“You can never truly understand how another person’s mind works.”

The most terrifying creatures weren’t beasts, but humans.

And a woman’s heart was the most unpredictable of all.

After a long silence, Bai Ruoxi seemed to reach a decision. She looked at Mu Zhi’an, her voice firm. “Young Master Mu, if you can save the Bai family, I’ll give you the Meridian Connecting Pill tomorrow.”

Mu Zhi’an looked at her, a sad smile on his face. “Miss Bai, do you honestly believe the Meridian Connecting Pill is still at the Bai Manor?”

    Bai Ruoxi froze.

She fell silent, listening to the rhythmic clatter of hooves against the cobblestones. A bitter smile touched her lips.

“You’re right…” she murmured. “Regardless, thank you for everything, Young Master Mu.”

She asked the coachman to stop, then reached for the curtain, intending to leave.

“Where are you going?” Mu Zhi’an asked.

She paused, her hand hovering over the curtain. “I need to… take care of the Bai family,” she replied softly.

Her father was gravely injured, and her mother was a traitor. She was the only one left who could shoulder this burden.

“Do you need my help?” Mu Zhi’an asked.

Bai Ruoxi shook her head. “You have no obligation to help us, Young Master Mu. You’ve already done so much.”

“I’ll visit you again soon to express my gratitude properly.”

She still has some pride… Mu Zhi’an watched as she made to leave the carriage. He reached out and gently grasped her hand, pulling her back inside.

She turned to look at him, her eyes filled with confusion.

Her usually vibrant beauty was now muted, her face pale and drawn, her eyes moist. She looked fragile, vulnerable, making him want to pull her into his arms and comfort her.

He signaled for the coachman to continue, then turned back to Bai Ruoxi.

“Is there something else, Young Master Mu?” she asked softly, lowering her gaze. Her white dress swayed gently as the carriage moved, revealing a glimpse of her slender legs.

Mu Zhi’an’s goal was the Meridian Connecting Pill, but it was likely already in the Gongsun family’s possession. The Bai family had nothing left to offer him.

“What do you think our relationship is, Miss Bai?” he asked.

    Bai Ruoxi was taken aback.

She’d never considered that question before.

Their dynamic had shifted from simp and goddess to equals, and in the past few days, a layer of undeniable intimacy had developed between them.

“We’re definitely not Dao Companions. But… we’re more than just friends, aren’t we?”

    He gently squeezed her hand.

Bai Ruoxi hesitated, then nodded, a faint blush coloring her cheeks. She didn’t pull away, allowing him to hold her hand.

“Your father is injured, but that doesn’t mean he’s useless,” Mu Zhi’an said, his gaze fixed on her.

“I think… with our current relationship, it’s time we met the parents.”

    The parents…?

Bai Ruoxi stared at him, her eyes widening in understanding.

“You… You want to meet my father?!”

    Mu Zhi’an nodded.

Compared to the scheming Gongsun family, he now believed the Bai family was a more reliable ally.

    Chapter 23: A Woman’s Heart

    That night.

Mu Zhi’an’s carriage traveled through the dark streets, stopping a short distance from the Bai Manor.

He hopped out and went to Bai Ruoxi’s side, holding open the curtain and offering her his hand.

She glanced at him in the dim light, then took his hand and stepped out of the carriage.

She looked around, then finally asked, “Young Master Mu, why are we sneaking into the Bai Manor?”

This was her own home. Why was he making her sneak in like a thief? It was baffling.

“Miss Bai, do you know where your father is recuperating?” Mu Zhi’an asked.

Bai Ruoxi was taken aback. How did he know about her father’s injuries?

But then she realized it wasn’t that surprising. Her father had been absent for quite some time. With the Mu family’s intelligence network, uncovering such information wouldn’t be difficult.

“He’s recovering at a safe location,” she replied softly. “Two guards are watching over him.”

“So, your mother is currently managing the Bai Manor, correct?” Mu Zhi’an asked.

    Bai Ruoxi hesitated, then nodded.

“In other words, aside from a few servants, your mother is alone at the manor, right?”

“Young Master Mu, what are you trying to say?” Bai Ruoxi frowned, a wave of unease washing over her.

“You’ll understand soon enough, Miss Bai,” Mu Zhi’an replied. “But it might not be until tomorrow night.”

He turned towards the shadows. “Mengrou, it’s your turn.”

Bai Ruoxi turned around in surprise. She hadn’t noticed the woman standing behind them, her goose-yellow dress blending into the darkness. Despite her bright attire, she seemed to melt into the night.

If Mu Zhi’an hadn’t spoken, Bai Ruoxi wouldn’t have even noticed her presence.

“Don’t be surprised. When it comes to concealing her presence, she’s one of the best in the Core Formation Realm,” Mu Zhi’an explained.

Of all the Core Formation experts he knew, Wei Mengrou might not be the strongest, but her abilities were the most convenient.

The black-robed man’s faulty intel was a testament to her skill. He hadn’t detected her presence at the Bai Manor, assuming that only Elder Ren was a Core Formation cultivator.

That was why Mu Zhi’an never treated Wei Mengrou like a mere servant.

After all, if you didn’t treat people with sincerity, how could you expect them to treat you with sincerity in return?

“Don’t take longer than half an hour,” Wei Mengrou warned. “After that, I can’t guarantee your safety.”

Mu Zhi’an nodded, then turned to Bai Ruoxi. “Let’s go.”

She was still confused, but seeing him scale the manor wall, she followed suit. She landed gracefully beside him, her white dress billowing in the night breeze.

“What are we doing, Young Master Mu?” she asked softly.

Mu Zhi’an scanned the manor, his eyes sharp. Moonlight bathed the courtyard, and the wind rustled the leaves, creating an eerie symphony of whispers.

It seems the Bai Manor truly is short-staffed… Mu Zhi’an thought to himself. He glanced at Bai Ruoxi. “Wait here for me. I’ll be back soon.”

Before she could respond, he jumped down from the wall.

Qi Condensation strengthened the body, while Foundation Establishment granted access to “qi,” the spiritual energy within.

With qi, one could scale walls and leap across rooftops with ease.

If only I was at Core Formation, I could just fly around on a sword… Mu Zhi’an thought to himself, a hint of regret in his heart.

Despite his musings, he remained alert, moving silently through the courtyard, searching for Bai Yuanfeng’s room.

His gaze landed on the second room from the right. He could see candlelight flickering behind the door, and a woman’s silhouette was faintly visible.

Even with Wei Mengrou’s help in concealing their presence, he took extra precautions, masking his own aura.

He approached the door and listened intently.

    Silence.

It’s a shame they don’t have those flimsy paper doors you can poke a hole through… Mu Zhi’an thought to himself, disappointed.

He didn’t give up. He scanned the area and spotted an open window.

He adjusted his breathing, then crept towards the window and peeked inside.

    Disappointment washed over him.

Bai Yuanfeng was alone in the room, sitting on a luxurious couch, clad in a silk nightgown. Without her makeup, she looked much older, but she was still attractive for her age.

However, compared to her daughter, she was… lacking.

Is the black-robed man lying, or is Bai Yuanfeng being cautious…?

    Mu Zhi’an wondered.

The black-robed man shouldn’t be spreading easily disproven lies.

So, it had to be Bai Yuanfeng’s cautious nature…?

As he pondered this, a hand tapped him on the shoulder.

    He jumped, whirling around instinctively.

Bai Ruoxi was standing behind him, her eyes narrowed in anger. “Young Master Mu!” she hissed, keeping her voice low. “Why are you sneaking around my mother’s room at night?!”

Suddenly, a chill ran down Mu Zhi’an’s spine. He clamped a hand over her mouth, pulling her into his arms and pressing her against the wall beneath the window.

Bai Ruoxi’s eyes widened in surprise. She struggled against his grip, about to demand an explanation, when she sensed something and looked up.

A streak of light descended from the sky, landing silently in the courtyard.

The light faded, revealing a man standing on a flying sword.

    Gongsun Xiong.

Bai Ruoxi’s eyes widened in shock.

What was he doing at the Bai Manor?

Moments later, the door to Bai Yuanfeng’s room opened. She smiled warmly and ushered Gongsun Xiong inside.

    Chapter 22: Heh Heh Heh

“Miss, and… Young Master Mu, are you leaving?”

As Mu Zhi’an and Bai Ruoxi exited the manor, the two servants guarding the entrance couldn’t help but ask.

Normally, they wouldn’t dare to pry into their superiors’ affairs.

However, Ye Yu had just stormed out, and it was clear that the situation involved both Bai Ruoxi and Mu Zhi’an.

Now, Mu Zhi’an was taking their young mistress away. It was only natural for them to be concerned.

“Yes,” Bai Ruoxi replied, her voice cool and composed. “We have some matters to attend to at the Mu Manor.”

Mu Zhi’an added, “Please inform Madam Bai that Miss Bai will be staying at the Mu Manor tonight and won’t be returning.”

The servants exchanged glances, their eyes filled with knowing smiles.

Had their young mistress rejected Ye Yu because of Mu Zhi’an?

Bai Ruoxi turned to Mu Zhi’an, her eyes wide with surprise.

Staying at the Mu Manor tonight… he hadn’t mentioned that.

In the past, such a statement would have sent her mind spiraling with wild fantasies.

After all, it was only natural for a young woman to overthink spending the night at a man’s home.

However, Mu Zhi’an’s recent behavior had reassured her.

He might have feelings for her, but he would never take advantage of her… She was certain of that now.

He’d had several opportunities to make a move, but he’d always restrained himself.

As she pondered this, Mu Zhi’an held open the carriage curtain. “After you, Miss Bai.”

She nodded, her movements graceful as she approached the carriage. A gentle breeze rustled her white dress, revealing her slender figure and long legs clad in simple boots. She placed a hand on her ample bosom, then bent slightly and stepped inside.

Mu Zhi’an nodded to the coachman, and the carriage set off.

Bai Ruoxi turned to face him, expecting an explanation. However, he simply leaned back, his hands behind his head, and closed his eyes, as if settling in for a nap.

After a long silence, she couldn’t hold back any longer. “Young Master Mu, can you please explain why you brought me to the Mu Manor?”

Mu Zhi’an shook his head. “Telling you now would be pointless. You wouldn’t believe me.”

“Besides, I’m not even sure if it’s true. I’d rather not spread rumors.”

The black-robed man had claimed to have seen Bai Yuanfeng at the Gongsun Manor, but it was just hearsay.

He’d shared that information to sow discord between Mu Zhi’an and the Bai and Gongsun families, hoping to prevent them from joining forces against him.

    The truth remained unclear.

However, it would be revealed soon enough.

And all signs pointed to Bai Yuanfeng.

    Mu Manor.

Bai Ruoxi sat sipping tea, her mind elsewhere.

A few strands of hair framed her delicate face, and her white dress accentuated her alluring figure. She exuded an aura of aloof beauty, intimidating in her perfection.

She held her teacup, her gaze downcast, seemingly lost in thought.

Even when she’s daydreaming, she’s breathtaking… Mu Zhi’an sighed inwardly, admiring her beauty.

Sensing his gaze, Bai Ruoxi looked up, meeting his eyes. She didn’t blush or look away. Instead, she asked softly, “Can you explain now, Young Master Mu?”

Mu Zhi’an shook his head. “You’ll understand when night falls.”

Bai Ruoxi’s eyes widened. “When night falls…?”

It was an easily misinterpreted phrase. Combined with his earlier gaze, even someone who trusted him as much as she did couldn’t help but let her imagination run wild.

“I have a surprise for you,” Mu Zhi’an said with a smile. Then he corrected himself. “Or rather… a shock.”

    “Be prepared, Miss Bai.”

Bai Ruoxi’s eyes flickered with confusion.

But Mu Zhi’an didn’t elaborate. He took a sip of tea, his gaze distant, as if lost in thought.

Bai Ruoxi, seeing this, decided not to press him further. She held her teacup and sipped her tea quietly.

It was clear he wouldn’t answer her questions, so there was no point in embarrassing herself.

They had dinner at the Mu Manor. As hai shi approached, the city fell silent.

Mu Zhi’an turned to Bai Ruoxi, who looked exhausted after a day of waiting. “Let’s go, Miss Bai.”

She forced herself to focus. “Go where…?”

“To our destination, of course. Unless you’d prefer to go to my room?” Mu Zhi’an teased.

Bai Ruoxi blushed, her eyes sparkling with a mixture of annoyance and amusement. “And where… is this destination?”

“The Bai Manor,” Mu Zhi’an replied. “I’m taking you home.”

Bai Ruoxi stared at him, dumbfounded.

He’d invited her to the Mu Manor, made her wait all day, and now, as night approached, he was taking her back home…?

He met her confused gaze and smiled.

“Have you ever tried sneaking into your own home at night, Miss Bai?”

Bai Ruoxi frowned. “Why would I sneak into my own home…?”

Bai Yuanfeng supported her marrying into the Mu family. She wouldn’t object to her spending the night at the Mu Manor.

There was no reason for her to sneak in.

Mu Zhi’an looked at her, his expression unreadable. “You’ll understand soon enough.”

  • It turns out, they are the protagonists chapter 21

Chapter 21: They Are the Protagonists

Ye Yu frowned as he watched the handsome young man approach.

    Bai Ruoxi also frowned.

It wasn’t that she didn’t welcome Mu Zhi’an, but she’d rather he hadn’t arrived at this particular moment.

“I’m sure you overheard everything, Young Master Mu,” Ye Yu said, his dark eyes fixed intently on Mu Zhi’an. “What are your thoughts on this matter?”

He had calmed down from his initial outburst of anger.

He’d been delighted when Bai Ruoxi had invited him to the Bai Manor. But their conversation had quickly taken a turn for the worse, ending with her handing him a “letter of annulment.”

    He felt deeply humiliated.

He’d treated her so well, and this was how she repaid him? By inviting him to her home just to humiliate him?

She had never mentioned breaking off their engagement before, and her attitude towards him had never been so cold. But after her encounter with Mu Zhi’an, everything had changed.

She must be breaking off their engagement because she had fallen for Mu Zhi’an.

He wanted to see how Mu Zhi’an would defend her actions.

“I don’t have any grand insights, Young Master Ye, but I can understand Miss Bai’s decision,” Mu Zhi’an replied with a smile.

Ye Yu frowned, staring at him silently.

“Before we continue, I should point out something,” Mu Zhi’an said. “You and Miss Bai aren’t married. You can’t give her a letter of annulment. You can only agree to break off the engagement.”

    Ye Yu’s brow furrowed.

“Is that all you came here to discuss, Young Master Mu? Such trivial matters?”

Mu Zhi’an shook his head. “Young Master Ye, you believe Miss Bai is humiliating you by breaking off your engagement here, at her manor, correct?”

Ye Yu met Mu Zhi’an’s gaze, his expression unreadable.

He couldn’t figure out what Mu Zhi’an was getting at.

“Would you feel equally humiliated if she had gone to the Ye Manor to deliver the letter?” Mu Zhi’an asked.

Ye Yu hesitated, then nodded. “Of course.”

“Then how should she have done it without humiliating you?” Mu Zhi’an countered.

So, breaking off the engagement was wrong, no matter how it was done?

Ye Yu opened his mouth to speak, but he found himself trapped by Mu Zhi’an’s logic. He remained silent.

After a moment, he asked, “Are you saying you agree with her decision, Young Master Mu?”

“Of course not. Breaking off an engagement is a serious matter,” Mu Zhi’an replied. He walked over to Bai Ruoxi, noticing her conflicted expression. “However, Miss Bai never agreed to this marriage. This engagement was arranged by your elders without your consent. Is she not allowed to pursue her own happiness?”

    Ye Yu fell silent.

He felt Mu Zhi’an was twisting logic, but he couldn’t find a valid counterargument.

The engagement had been arranged by their elders without their consent.

Now that she was older and had made it clear that she didn’t want to marry him, was it wrong for her to break off the engagement?

If they viewed this from Ye Yu’s perspective, they might sympathize with him.

But from Bai Ruoxi’s perspective, she was simply rejecting a marriage she’d never wanted. What was wrong with that?

Mu Zhi’an continued, “Has Miss Bai ever indicated that she had feelings for you?”

Ye Yu’s eyes flickered, and he looked at Bai Ruoxi.

She met his gaze, her expression cold. “I’ve never had feelings for you, Young Master Ye.”

Those simple words struck Ye Yu like a blow to the chest. He stumbled backward, his composure crumbling.

He had tried so hard to win her over, enduring countless rejections.

He had always seen her as his fiancée, but she had never seen him as her fiancé.

Her attitude had always been distant and aloof.

He had assumed she treated all men her age that way, but now he realized… that wasn’t the case.

Her demeanor towards Mu Zhi’an was completely different.

Even now, as Mu Zhi’an stood beside her, her gaze kept returning to him.

“Breaking off the engagement now brings shame upon the Ye family,” Ye Yu said coldly.

“Marrying you would sacrifice Miss Bai’s happiness,” Mu Zhi’an countered.

“I can give Ruoxi happiness!” Ye Yu blurted out.

“You can’t force happiness on someone who doesn’t love you, Young Master Ye,” Mu Zhi’an replied, his smile unwavering. “You keep saying that Miss Bai is humiliating you and your family by breaking off the engagement.”

“But it’s just an engagement. If you explain the situation, make it clear that you’re not compatible, no one will gossip.”

“To be blunt, the Bai family is in decline. Their power is comparable to yours now. No one will believe that they forced you to break off the engagement. So how can you claim that this brings shame upon the Ye family?”

“You’re just angry because you can’t have her.”

Ye Yu glared at Mu Zhi’an. “Young Master Mu, if she can treat me like this, she might treat you the same way one day.”

“That’s not your concern, Young Master Ye.” Mu Zhi’an chuckled. “Is there anything else? I have some matters to discuss with Ruoxi. If you’re done, please leave.”

He turned to Bai Ruoxi, smiling. “Miss Bai, would you mind if we chatted for a bit?”

Bai Ruoxi nodded, her gaze downcast.

Her demeanor towards him was a stark contrast to her coldness towards Ye Yu.

“Let’s go inside,” Mu Zhi’an said, heading towards the main hall.

Ye Yu watched them go, his fists clenching. He glared at Mu Zhi’an’s retreating figure. “Young Master Mu, I challenge you to a duel!”

Bai Ruoxi frowned, her patience wearing thin. She was about to intervene.

Mu Zhi’an reached out and gently took her hand, silencing her.

He turned to Ye Yu and smiled. “I’m afraid I must decline.”

Ye Yu stared at him, speechless, his anger simmering.

He’s so eager… Mu Zhi’an thought to himself, amused. “How about this, Young Master Ye? Two days from now, at the Dragon Head Forest. We’ll have a private duel. Does that satisfy you?”

Bai Ruoxi’s eyes widened. She turned to Mu Zhi’an. “You don’t have to agree to this. I can handle it myself—”

Mu Zhi’an raised a hand, silencing her.

Ye Yu’s eyes lit up, his fighting spirit reignited. “Very well! Two days from now, at the Dragon Head Forest!”

He tore up the letter of annulment and turned to Bai Ruoxi, his gaze filled with resentment. “You’ll regret this, Miss Bai.”

Once he defeated Mu Zhi’an and proved his talent, she would realize who the true Chosen One was.

Despite his words, seeing Mu Zhi’an holding Bai Ruoxi’s hand filled him with a burning jealousy.

He turned and stormed away without another word.

Mu Zhi’an watched him go, a smile playing on his lips.

    He was clearly desperate.

It was almost comical. With a mentality like that, he called himself the “protagonist”?

Mu Zhi’an glanced at his personal interface, at the words “Supporting Character” displayed in bold, red letters, and chuckled inwardly.

Was there something wrong with this world?

Ye Yu was nothing more than a lucky “nouveau riche” who had stumbled upon a cheat.

His actions didn’t match the image of those patient and calculating protagonists he’d read about.

But it didn’t matter. Once he dealt with Ye Yu, his status as a “Supporting Character” would surely change to “Protagonist,” right?

“Young Master Mu, is there something you wanted to discuss?” Bai Ruoxi asked, her voice drawing him back to the present.

He nodded. He glanced towards the main hall. “Is Madam Bai not at home?”

Bai Ruoxi nodded, her brow furrowed in confusion. “Are you… here to see my mother?”

Mu Zhi’an shook his head. “I just wanted to confirm something.”

Bai Ruoxi stared at him, puzzled.

“I’d like you to accompany me back to the Mu Manor, Miss Bai,” Mu Zhi’an said.

    “Why?” she asked hesitantly.

“I want to show you something… interesting.”

He looked at her, his voice soft. “But you need to be prepared.”

  • They All Want to Be My Female Lead chapter 38

    38. Celebrating the New Year

According to the script, after the family competition, Yan Zhen should prepare to break through to Mystic Disciple 9th stage, but he was already at the 9th stage now.

In order to prevent his cultivation from deviating from the script again, he could only go cultivate other things first, such as his signature skill “Eight Extremes Explosion”.

Yan Zhen went to ask his beautiful master to teach him a fierce mystic technique and successfully obtained the cultivation method for the “Eight Extremes Explosion”.

So in the following period of time, Yan Zhen mainly cultivated the “Eight Extremes Explosion” and secondarily cultivated the “Tai Chi Shock”, arranging his time to be full and busy, living an exhausting yet fulfilling life every day.

His mystic power also became more thick and rich because of this, which made Chen Xi very satisfied. She thought that her precious disciple was indeed able to keep his composure and didn’t rush to advance to Mystic One.

Because Yan Zhen hid in the crystal space and was addicted to cultivation, Yan Meng’er couldn’t find any opportunity to “conquer” him together with cousin Yan Ruyu.

This made Yan Meng’er very disappointed, but Yan Ruyu breathed a big sigh of relief, because the so-called conquering behavior proposed by Yan Meng’er was too embarrassing. Who could complete it!

Half a month later, it was already the end of the year. Yan Zhen successfully mastered the “Eight Extremes Explosion” and could release a double-layered explosive force. The “Tai Chi Shock” also improved a lot.

Yan Zhen stopped cultivating mystic techniques and prepared to advance to Mystic One.

To go from Mystic Disciple to Mystic One, one had to condense the mystic power in the dantian into a vortex. It was very difficult to do it alone and required the assistance of a Condensed Mystic Pill.

Condensed Mystic Pills were extremely precious and hard to find on the market.

However, Yan Zhen didn’t lack Condensed Mystic Pills, because he had his beautiful master.

As long as the medicinal materials were bought, Chen Xi could easily refine Condensed Mystic Pills.

After refining the Condensed Mystic Pill, Yan Zhen cultivated in the Mystic Gathering Formation for a full three days, adjusting himself to the best state before starting to take the pill to advance.

The advancement process was very smooth, because Yan Zhen had already succeeded once when he was eleven years old.

Feeling the surging mystic power in his body, Yan Zhen stretched out lazily. The system’s broadcast immediately sounded in his mind:

[Congratulations to the host for completing the key plot ‘Advancing to Mystic One’. You can go to the corresponding interface to claim the reward.]

    Yan Zhen immediately claimed it.

This time it wasn’t a useless special trump card, but a new “Trump Card (1st Grade)”.

The system said that every time he advanced to a major realm, he would obtain a versatile trump card that was only effective for the current realm.

As for the initial “Trump Card (1st Grade)”, it was a novice gift.

He put it away for now. Who knew when it would come in handy?

Yan Zhen wasn’t dissatisfied, because he didn’t have high expectations for these rewards in the first place.

The plot rewards were just the side dish. The real main course was the plot itself.

As long as he developed according to the plot, Yan Zhen would become an invincible man. At that time, what would he lack? Wealth, beauties, status – everything would be at his fingertips.

    —This was the big picture.

“Master, I’ve already become a Mystic One. When will you teach me mystic techniques?”

Yan Zhen blinked his limpid big eyes, trying to make himself look as cute as possible to move his beautiful master’s heart.

Of course, his beautiful master wouldn’t be moved by him. She would only indifferently say “Let’s talk about it tomorrow”.

Why did he think so? Because that was what the script said.

However, Chen Xi was actually moved by Yan Zhen’s coquettish demeanor, almost revealing an expression unbefitting of a master.

She hurriedly collected her emotions and said with a faint smile:

“Zhen’er, you just broke through. You should rest first. We’ll talk about the technique tomorrow. Besides, tomorrow is New Year’s Eve. It just so happens that your master will give you a big red envelope~”

A big red envelope? That’s nice. It had a strong ceremonial feeling.

Yan Zhen said happily, “I’ll listen to Master!”

“Mm, these days Zhen’er, you’ve been cultivating non-stop. You should spend time with your family during the New Year. Come back tomorrow night.”

“Alright, I’ll be going then. See you tomorrow, Master.”

Yan Zhen waved his hand, activated the “Star Shifting Fire Seal”, and left the crystal space.

It was already night, but the entire City Lord’s Manor was still busy. It had been like this since two days ago.

However, this had nothing to do with Yan Zhen, because he was the young lord. There were basically no tasks for him.

He asked the servants to bring dinner. After eating simply, he took a bath and went to bed.

On New Year’s Eve, Yan Zhen changed into a new set of clothes specially made for him and went to the manor’s dining hall to have the New Year’s Eve dinner.

The New Year’s Eve dinner of a big family was a grand banquet. The tables were arranged from the dining hall to the courtyard, with two to three hundred tables.

Yan Zhen sat at the main table with Yan Lie. Yan Meng’er, Yan Ruyu, and other ladies sat at another table. The two girls also changed into new dresses in bright colors and put on light makeup. Their eyebrows were pretty, and their figures were graceful, standing out among the many young ladies and women of the same clan.

Seeing Yan Zhen, Yan Meng’er immediately waved her little hand at him happily and even blew him a kiss from a distance.

Yan Zhen smiled slightly in response.

It just so happened that Yan Ruyu also looked over. When she saw Yan Zhen, the polite smile on her face for entertaining others instantly disappeared. But unlike before, she didn’t deliberately snort. Instead, her cheeks turned red, and she quickly lowered her head.

    “?”

Yan Zhen wanted to make a face at her to provoke her, but seeing her look away so quickly, he stopped.

After having a happy and harmonious meal, Yan Zhen put the mountain-like red envelopes into his storage ring, then ran to the kitchen to take a few good dishes and to the wine cellar to take a bottle of good wine before returning to his small courtyard.

Tonight, everyone would stay in their rooms to “stay up late”, so he didn’t have to worry about anyone coming over.

He closed the door, locked it, and brought the good wine and dishes he took into the crystal space.

After becoming familiar with the process, Yan Zhen could now directly appear on the altar.

    “Master, I’m here!”

Chen Xi, who was meditating with her eyes closed, slowly opened her eyes. Seeing the fragrant and steaming dishes laid out in front of her, she was a bit dazed.

    “Zhen’er, what is this?”

“Master, let’s eat the New Year’s Eve dinner together.”

Although there was no such scene in the script, Yan Zhen still wanted to have a New Year’s Eve dinner with his beautiful master to express his gratitude to her.

Eating the New Year’s Eve dinner together?

Chen Xi stood there dumbfounded, unable to say a word for a while.

In her previous life, Yan Zhen didn’t do this. He just did as she instructed, entering the crystal space after eating to accept her technique inheritance.

Why would he now… Was it because of her rebirth, and everything she had done had slowly begun to change the future?

“Master? You… don’t want to eat? Although these are just ordinary dishes, they taste quite good. The wine is also good.”

Chen Xi’s silence made Yan Zhen feel awkward. He thought if he had done something unnecessary.

Perhaps his beautiful master, who was so ethereal, didn’t like to eat mundane dishes?

    This was a bit embarrassing.

Just as Yan Zhen was feeling uneasy, Chen Xi smiled gently and said, “Zhen’er, you’re thoughtful. Then your master will have a taste.”

Yan Zhen felt relieved and nimbly set up the bowls and chopsticks.

Chen Xi gently lifted her hand, and a part of the altar under the dishes slowly bulged up, turning into a temporary low table.

“Zhen’er, come sit beside your master.”

  • They All Want to Be My Female Lead chapter 37

    37. Let’s Marry Cousin Yan Zhen Together

Yan Ruyu was obviously moved, but after being stunned for a moment, she still reacted:

“What does it have to do with me? Can’t you capture him yourself?”

Hearing this, Yan Meng’er said resentfully, “I can’t do it alone. Because we’ve always been very close, Cousin Yan Zhen has developed a strong immunity to my charm. It’s too difficult to take a further step. Cousin, I need your help too.”

“Nonsense. He dislikes me so much. Wouldn’t it be worse if you add me?”

“You don’t know this, cousin. Although cousin says nasty things, he actually likes a mature woman with long legs, a slender waist, and a round butt like you more.”

“Ptui, ptui, ptui.” Yan Ruyu’s cheeks turned red, and she scolded coquettishly, “What big, what round? I think that little brat has corrupted you.”

“Cousin, I’m telling the truth.” Yan Meng’er said in a charming voice, “You think he’s mocking your round butt, but actually, he’s craving it~”

    “How is that possible!”

    That Yan Zhen, craving her?

“Really. Think carefully. Every time cousin sees you, doesn’t he just stare at your back?”

When she said this, Yan Ruyu immediately recalled the scenes when she met Yan Zhen. Indeed, Yan Zhen always liked to stare at her butt and then talk about it.

But this wasn’t really mockery, but to conceal his fondness?

Yan Ruyu’s rationality told her this wasn’t true, but deep down, she secretly hoped it was true and even felt a trace of joy because of it.

    “So he’s a little pervert.”

Yan Ruyu cursed in a low voice, but her tone wasn’t angry. Instead, there was a hint of shyness.

Yan Meng’er breathed a sigh of relief and secretly thought that she had finally pried open her proud cousin’s heart. She was unimaginably stubborn, no wonder in the previous life, cousin would rather hug her and cry than dare to confess.

So silly and pitiful, and very frustrating. It made people want to grab her and loudly say their own feelings.

“According to the kingdom’s laws and clan rules, cousins with distant blood relations can marry the clan leader together to serve and assist him.” Yan Meng’er made a little plan. “Now that Cousin Yan Zhen has recovered his talent, he will definitely be able to inherit the position of city lord and clan leader in the future. At that time, if the two of us marry Cousin Yan Zhen together, wouldn’t that be a wonderful thing~”

This was exactly what Yan Ruyu wanted to hear.

In fact, this was Yan Ruyu’s plan in her previous life.

Most of the clan rules in the Gallo Kingdom had such a clause:

As a cousin’s daughter, if you don’t get married when you reach a certain age, you either arrange a political marriage to be a political tool or serve the clan leader to expand the family line.

Yan Ruyu thought about delaying and delaying until she met the conditions, then “making do” and becoming Yan Zhen’s concubine.

That way, she wouldn’t have to confess in person, and she wouldn’t have to worry about being rejected by Yan Zhen. She could be with him one hundred percent, although the status of a concubine was much lower than the main wife.

However, Yan Zhen later left the Gallo Kingdom and married two wives with very prominent backgrounds.

No one dared to mention the matter of concubines, and Yan Zhen himself had no intention of taking concubines, so much so that it never even came to her turn to serve.

Being passive like this wouldn’t work. She couldn’t even become a concubine. She had to take the initiative.

Yan Meng’er stared at Yan Ruyu with utmost seriousness.

Yan Ruyu didn’t dare to look directly at her gaze and weakly refuted, “That kind of thing is too far in the future. Our key task now is still cultivation, striving to graduate from the Mystic Academy and enter the Sacred Academy for further study…”

“We should practice cultivation and pursue love. Why can’t we do both?” Yan Meng’er was full of motivation. “Anyway, it’s settled. Cousin, you have to help me capture Cousin Yan Zhen together.”

“Damn girl, I haven’t agreed yet.”

Hearing the intention of backing out in her tone, Yan Meng’er instantly became unhappy. Did she talk for so long in vain?

“Cousin, if you go back on your word, I’ll tell everyone that you like Cousin Yan Zhen, have liked him for many years, and have liked him like crazy since he spanked you.”

    “Wha—”

“—And!” Yan Meng’er mercilessly interrupted, “Every time cousin sees Cousin Yan Zhen, that night, you’ll definitely do embarrassing things while thinking of him; occasionally dreaming of him, you have to change your panties the next day when you get up; his things, no matter what, you’ll carefully keep them, including the paper airplane he deliberately folded very pointy to specifically poke your butt, and even a pair of his boxers that you took when he intentionally took off his pants to make you reveal an opening when he couldn’t beat you.”

Hearing this, Yan Ruyu’s eyes widened, shocked to the extreme.

These were all “top secrets” deep in her heart that she didn’t dare to recall usually. How did her cousin know?

    “Meng’er, you, you…”

“There’s more. Cousin, you’ve always wanted to cause trouble for Cousin Yan Zhen, not really to take revenge, but to be caught by him again, and then, hehehe~”

Yan Meng’er covered her little mouth with her hand, and her eyes revealed a little devilish smile.

Yan Ruyu felt that she was about to faint from embarrassment. Her entire head was hot, and the blush on her face spread all the way to her collarbone.

She wished she could dig a hole under her feet and bury herself in it, leaving the worldly hustle and bustle behind.

“Stop talking!” She screamed, “I promise you, alright!”

    “Really? That’s great~”

Yan Meng’er changed her face like flipping a book, happily hugging Yan Ruyu.

    “Good cousin, love you~”

However, Yan Ruyu didn’t feel her cousin’s love at all and even wanted to beat her up, letting her know how serious the consequences of teasing her cousin were!

She gritted her teeth and bit her lower lip. It took a long time for her to calm her emotions before she asked in a low voice, “Those things just now, where did you hear them from, Meng’er? There’s no basis at all. It’s completely fabricated!”

Yan Meng’er deliberately blinked her eyes and said innocently, “Is it fabricated?”

“Of course it is!” Yan Ruyu emphasized loudly and asked again, “Who on earth told you? I’ll tear that person’s mouth apart!”

—Hehe, it’s cousin from the previous life~

Yan Meng’er almost laughed out loud.

In the previous life, when the two of them slept together, they often talked about private bedroom matters. She got these things out of Yan Ruyu bit by bit.

“I just guessed it myself.” Yan Meng’er smiled faintly. “Didn’t I guess anything right at all?”

    “Not even a bit!”

    “Oh~”

“Damn girl, don’t say what you just said. You can’t tell anyone, including Yan Zhen. Understand?!”

“I know. I’m cousin’s good sister. How could I say some unfounded rumors? However, if cousin goes back on her word, then Meng’er will easily let it slip~”

Yan Ruyu could barely resist the urge to strangle her.

“I shouldn’t have let you get so close to Yan Zhen. He has completely corrupted you!”

“Oh my, cousin. You’re saying that again. You obviously like it when Cousin Yan Zhen teases you.”

    “You- you get lost!”

    Yan Ruyu: ヽ(#`Д’)ノ

    Yan Meng’er: φ(>ω<*)

    ……

At the same time, in Yan Zhen’s room—

    “Achoo!”

Yan Zhen let out a big sneeze, rubbing his nose while thinking about who was cursing him.

“Forget it. This isn’t important. Hurry up and cultivate. Advancing to Mystic One is the right path.”

After advancing to Mystic One, he would be able to learn mystic techniques.

The mystic techniques he wanted to learn were super cool.

Chapter 16: The God of Vengeance

Candice gulped, her eyes darting around the deserted tavern, her heart pounding in her chest.

The movements of a Hero Squad member?

    This was valuable information, indeed.

In the hierarchy of the Heavenly Continent’s human world, the Hero reigned supreme.

Below him were the three pillars of power: the Emperor, the High Priestess, and the Pope.

Next came the ten members of the Hero Squad, the Thirteen Sages, the President and Vice-President of the Adventurer’s Guild…

These individuals, possessing immense power and influence, were revered throughout the land. The Hero Squad, in particular, were celebrated for their bravery, their role in pushing back the Demon Beast hordes, buying humanity precious time.

And this mysterious man had just casually revealed the movements of one of its members. This was no small matter.

“Which one?” she asked, her voice barely a whisper.

“Benson, the Immovable Shield,” Qin Chu replied, his gaze fixed on her.

He had a long list of enemies.

Pope Augustus of the Holy See and Saint Monique, the High Priestess of the Church of the Earth Mother Goddess, the ones who had bound his magic and Battle Qi with the Heavenly Cage Shackles and the Earth Mother’s Embrace.

Emperor Wadsworth of the Auville Empire, who had ordered his soldiers to release the Dark Witch, injecting her with a rage-inducing elixir, leading to his near-fatal injuries.

Carlos, the former President of the Mercenary Alliance, now the leader of the post-war Guardian Alliance, the one who had beheaded him with the Sword of Damocles.

Lex, the head of the powerful merchant guild that controlled ninety percent of the Heavenly Continent’s media, weapon manufacturing, and food and medicine production, the one who had poisoned him, slowly weakening his body, and orchestrated the smear campaign that destroyed his reputation.

And the twelve Sages, excluding Natia, the ones who had summoned him to this world, the ones who had orchestrated his execution, amplifying the power of the magical restraints that bound him, tearing his body apart.

But his most hated enemies were his former comrades, the members of the Hero Squad.

    Ekaterina, the Crimson Valkyrie.

Eileen and Airi, the Twin Thieves.

    Athena, the Great Mage.

    Ronald, the Noble Swordsman.

    Calmuse, the Mad Berserker.

    Sylph, the Phantom Archer.

    Benson, the Immovable Shield.

    Karsus, the Death Knight.

And Loseweisse, the Holy Maiden, the woman who had called him “darling,” who had fed him medicine with her own lips, who had cared for him, who had urged him to recover… the woman he had loved most.

He had enemies everywhere he looked.

The Emperor, the Pope, the High Priestess… their betrayal, their desire to eliminate him, had angered him, but it hadn’t truly broken him.

It was the betrayal of his friends, of his lover, that had shattered his soul.

The camaraderie, the laughter, the shared battles… all of it a lie.

They had watched him die, their faces twisted with smug satisfaction, their hands stained with his blood.

They had desecrated his body, scattering his remains to the far corners of the continent, his head buried beneath the Holy City, trampled upon by millions.

What kind of hatred, what kind of malice, could drive them to such acts?

He had considered them family, friends, lovers… but to them, he had been nothing more than a pawn, a disposable tool.

All those happy memories… all of it a lie.

He yearned to kill them all, to bathe in their blood, to make them suffer as he had suffered. But he wasn’t strong enough, not yet.

He would have to resort to more… creative methods.

And compared to the tortures they had inflicted upon him, any action he took, no matter how ruthless, would be justified.

The Hero Squad members, tasked with protecting the Heavenly Continent, were scattered across the land, battling Demon Beasts. His summoning had brought them to the capital, where they served as his mentors, teaching him the ways of Battle Qi, combat skills, and magic.

Despite their loathing for him, they had pretended to be his friends, sharing stories of their adventures, revealing their movements, their plans.

He knew where they were, when they would move, who they would meet.

He had chosen Benson as his first target for two reasons.

First, Benson was a solitary individual, rarely traveling with companions, making him vulnerable to ambushes.

Second, Benson, like Qin Chu in his previous life, was utterly devoted to Loseweisse, obeying her every command.

He would use the Demons to cripple her, to sever one of her most loyal pawns.

The memories, vivid and painful, fueled his rage. His eyes burned with a crimson fire, his body radiating an icy chill.

Candice shivered, her fear intensifying. Though he hadn’t unleashed his power, the aura that emanated from him was terrifying, otherworldly. He seemed less like a man and more like a demon, his very presence a violation of the natural order.

“Apologies,” Qin Chu said, noticing her discomfort. He reigned in his emotions, his face once again a mask of calm indifference.

Candice swallowed, forcing a smile. “I-It’s alright,” she stammered.

“Do you want me to… relay this information to my superiors?” she asked, her voice hesitant.

    “Yes.”

“But… how can I be sure this information is accurate?” she asked, her fear battling with her curiosity. “What if this is a trap?”

She believed him, believed in his hatred for the Hero Squad. But the stakes were too high.

If this was a deception, the consequences would be dire. The Demons would suffer heavy losses, and she, the one who had provided the false information, would face a gruesome punishment. The thought of their methods, their penchant for creative torture, made her shudder.

Qin Chu smiled, his hand moving across the map, circling another location. Candice’s eyes widened as she recognized the spot.

“The seventh son of the Eternal Monarch, Nagath,” he said, his voice soft yet menacing. “He’s hiding here, isn’t he? Waiting for the Hero, hoping to eliminate him before he becomes another Jie Luo.”

“What do you think will happen to your precious prince if I reveal his location to the humans?”

Candice understood. He wasn’t trying to destroy the Demons. He merely wanted to use them, to manipulate them into eliminating his enemies.

“Why don’t you deal with them yourself?” she asked, her curiosity overcoming her fear. “Surely, with your power, even Benson wouldn’t stand a chance.”

Qin Chu hadn’t considered that. He paused, his fingers tapping against the bar, his mind racing, searching for a plausible excuse.

Candice, realizing her mistake, quickly backpedaled. “My apologies, sir,” she said, her voice barely a whisper. “I shouldn’t have asked. It’s… none of my business.”

She bit her lip, her eyes wide and apologetic. Curiosity killed the cat, she thought.

She was a clever girl, quick to recover from her missteps.

Qin Chu smiled, his expression enigmatic. “Indeed,” he said, his voice low and menacing. “It’s best to keep some secrets buried.”

She was clever, but also hopelessly curious. Her mind, he could tell, was buzzing with questions, especially those pertaining to her own past.

But she was also afraid to pry too deeply, worried about incurring his wrath.

Her lips twitched, her gaze darting between him and the map, her desire for knowledge warring with her fear.

    She was adorable.

Far too innocent for the dangerous role she had been forced to play.

She couldn’t hold back any longer. She had to know. Why did he know so much about her? And then she realized, with a jolt of horror, that she didn’t even know his name.

“My apologies, sir,” she stammered, her cheeks flushing crimson. “I don’t even know your name. How rude of me.”

Qin Chu, of course, had no intention of revealing his true identity.

He considered for a moment, then spoke.

    “You can call me…”

    “Horus.”

    The God of Vengeance.

  • Dear, it’s time for your medicine! chapter 15

Chapter 15: Don’t Worry, I’m Not Going to Kill You

Qin Chu trusted the Dark Witch’s judgment. If she said this woman had the makings of a Witch, then it was likely true.

He had underestimated her. Her potential was far greater than he had initially thought.

He smiled, swirling the crimson liquid in his glass, the ice clinking softly.

He was in no hurry, content to savor the moment, to watch her squirm under his scrutiny. He was playing the role of the enigmatic master to perfection.

The night was still, the silence in the tavern broken only by the soft clinking of glasses.

The woman’s composure seemed to waver.

The crimson liquid in his glass swirled, its color deepening.

“Your heart is troubled,” he said, his voice soft yet penetrating, breaking the silence.

Candice, still pretending to be Catherine, stared at him, her amethyst eyes narrowed, trying to decipher him.

Despite her potential, she was still young, her patience easily outmatched by his. His words, revealing her deepest secret, had shaken her facade.

She chose to deflect, her voice carefully neutral. “Sir, why do you mistake me for Candice?” she asked.

“Is there another woman in this world who shares my name and… my appearance?”

She was genuinely curious, her gaze searching his, trying to unravel the mystery that surrounded him. He seemed ordinary, unremarkable, save for his handsome features.

Though he wore a mage’s robes, the magical aura that emanated from him was faint, barely perceptible.

He was weak, so weak that she could crush him with a flick of her wrist.

His weakness, however, made her uneasy.

Why would someone so vulnerable confront her, revealing his knowledge of her secret? Was he suicidal?

There was something strange about him, something unsettling.

Perhaps he was one of those legendary masters, their power so profound that it masked their true strength, making them appear ordinary.

Fear gnawed at her. What did he want from her? Was he here to expose her, to punish her for her past transgressions?

Her gaze darted towards the exits, her mind racing, searching for an escape route. But he was blocking her path. Any sudden movement, any attempt to flee, would be futile.

    He had her trapped.

Qin Chu remained silent, swirling his drink, enjoying her discomfort. The silence stretched on, each tick of the clock amplifying her anxiety.

She felt like a fly caught in a spider’s web, her every movement watched, her every thought scrutinized.

Just as she was about to break, he finally set his glass down, his lips curving into a reassuring smile.

“Don’t worry,” he said, his voice calm and soothing. “I’m not going to kill you.”

She let out a shaky breath, relief washing over her. If he said he wouldn’t kill her, then he wouldn’t. Powerful individuals like him valued their word, their pronouncements carrying the weight of law.

In his eyes, she was likely nothing more than an insignificant insect, her life or death a matter of indifference.

    But who was he?

She knew of all the major players in the Heavenly Continent: Pope Augustus, Saint Monique, Emperor Wadsworth, the Thirteen Sages, the members of the Hero Squad. None of them matched his description.

Perhaps, she thought, her perspective was too limited.

Rumor had it that those who reached the pinnacle of magical mastery could extend their lifespans, even reverse the aging process. Could he be one of those ancient beings, his true power masked by his youthful appearance?

She took a deep breath, forcing a smile, her voice betraying a hint of nervousness. “You seem to know a lot about me… Candice,” she said, testing the waters.

Qin Chu didn’t answer immediately, his silence adding to her unease.

“Candice,” he finally began, his voice soft and measured, “daughter of the Vice-Captain of the Earth Mother Goddess Church’s Earth Knights and the Queen of the Succubi.”

“A noble knight, his resolve weakened by a moment of passion, succumbed to a temptation that plagues all men.”

“Ten months later, a baby girl was left on his doorstep. He named her Candice.”

“He knew she was his, his blood singing in recognition. But her arrival was a curse disguised as a blessing. She was a half-breed, her veins tainted with Demon blood. He feared exposure, worried that her existence would ruin his career.”

Candice’s eyes widened, her body trembling uncontrollably. How did he know all this? It was as if he had witnessed her entire life, every secret, every heartache laid bare.

Her fear intensified, mixed with a profound sense of relief that she hadn’t attacked him.

This man, whoever he was, was far more powerful than he appeared.

“He abandoned her in the forest, hoping the wild beasts would end her life quickly,” Qin Chu continued, his voice devoid of judgment, merely stating facts. “But she survived. Her Demon blood protected her, the beasts instinctively fearing her presence. She was strong, resilient, her innate magical talent blossoming in the face of adversity.”

“She sought acceptance among the Demons, hoping to find a place among her mother’s kin. But they, too, rejected her, their disgust for her human blood palpable. She endured their taunts, their abuse, clinging to the hope of a better future.”

    “And then her mother appeared.”

“The Succubus Queen offered her a deal: prove her loyalty to the Demonfolk, and she would be welcomed as a princess, her status among them secured.”

“She agreed, her human appearance making her the perfect infiltrator. She was sent to the capital, tasked with spying on the human army, relaying their movements to her new allies.”

“But as time passed, her loyalties shifted. She grew accustomed to her human life, her reports becoming increasingly infrequent. She longed for normalcy, for a life free from the shadows.”

“Am I right?” he asked, his smile widening.

Candice’s lips trembled, her amethyst eyes unfocused, her mind reeling.

Fear, confusion, and a strange sense of… relief?

He had watched her, known her secrets, for over two decades. The thought was both terrifying and… strangely comforting.

“An intriguing tale,” she said, forcing a smile, her voice strained. “But what does this… Candice have to do with me, Catherine?”

She took a deep breath, her gaze meeting his. “I have no interest in her past. Now, if you’ll excuse me, sir, I have work to do.”

Qin Chu leaned forward, his eyes gleaming. “A proposition,” he said, his voice low and conspiratorial.

    “Do you have a map?”

She hesitated for a moment, then retrieved a rolled-up map of the Heavenly Continent from beneath the counter.

“And a pen, please,” he added.

She sighed, placing a quill pen beside the map.

He unfurled the map, his hand moving swiftly as he drew a jagged line across its surface.

“Tomorrow morning,” he said, his voice taking on a serious tone, “a member of the Hero Squad will depart for the capital, following this route. He is expected to arrive in half a month.”
