Chapter 44 : Special Trump Card ‘Blazing Tripitaka(1)*

After much effort, the master and disciple finally managed to separate.

A flash of light, and the water stains on Chen Xi’s body evaporated completely. She then took out a set of clean black clothes from her storage ring and changed into them.

The boundless spring scenery was once again concealed, but it still lingered clearly in Yan Zhen’s mind.

However, during the previous slow and tedious process, he had another round with his beautiful master, and now he was in the state of post-coital tranquility, so he was not feeling lustful.

    Ahem, he should be.

Yan Zhen lowered his head and silently cursed himself, “Don’t raise your head, you stud! How embarrassing!”

Even now, he still found it hard to believe that he had cultivated with his beautiful master for a day and a night.

Sigh, he didn’t expect it to go so wrong so quickly, but fortunately the system allowed him to reboot and replay.

[Ding! Congratulations, host, for completing the key plot ‘Refining the Extreme Flame’. You can claim the reward on your own.]

    —What?

He had already cultivated with the beautiful master, and it wasn’t considered a failure of the plot? This was completely different from the script!

    —System, why didn’t you reboot?

[The host indeed refined the Extreme Flame with the help of the beautiful master, and he did not exhibit any behavior that would collapse his character setting, so there’s no need to rewind.]

    “…”

Yan Zhen was at a loss for words.

Upon careful consideration, it seemed that the beautiful master had been the one taking the initiative the whole time, and he just sat there enjoying it.

Since he was forced to cultivate, it didn’t count as a character collapse? And since he successfully refined the Extreme Flame, it counted as completing the task?

    —System, your judgment seems problematic.

    [No.]

—Okay, as long as it doesn’t affect my ultimate invincible ending, and don’t play word games about heavenly enemies or else our friendship will be in trouble.

[The system is honest and straightforward.]

Yan Zhen let go of the system and checked the reward, which turned out to be a special trump card.

It seems that apart from the breakthrough plot, the regular rewards are all special trump cards.

However, this special trump card is different from the previous ones. The previous ones were “skills”, but this one is a “summon”, with an image of a handsome monk with a burning flame on his head, wearing a kasaya, and with a benevolent expression. It’s called “Blazing Tripitaka”.

After summoning, the summoned being will have the same cultivation level as the summoner. Now it’s a five-star Mystic One, and when he reaches the Mystic Scholar realm, the summoned being will be a Mystic Scholar.

    Quite interesting~

It’s just the name that makes one not know how to comment on it.

The special skill is also a bit strange, called “Tripitaka Has a Gun”, which describes suddenly pulling out a gun and shooting.

Yan Zhen imagined it and felt the style was a bit bleak and weird.

At this time, Chen Xi had changed into her clothes and turned around, seeing Yan Zhen still soaking in the tub, so she said:

“Zhen’er, you shouldn’t soak in there anymore, come out quickly.”

    “Ah? Oh!”

Yan Zhen felt a bit guilty and quickly stood up from the water, splashing water everywhere, making a loud noise.

Seeing her still vigorous and fierce disciple, Chen Xi paused for a moment, her cheeks flushing slightly.

—This child, is he still not satisfied? They had been cultivating for a day and a night, and although it was aided by the dual cultivation technique, it was still a bit too much.

Chen Xi recalled that in her previous life, on the second day of Yan Zhen’s wedding, he didn’t come to pay his respects to her until almost noon, and the two new brides were walking with a strange gait, fully demonstrating what it meant to be “unable to get out of bed”.

Her disciple had crushed two at the same time, so if it was just her, she wouldn’t possibly be… No, no, no, now her cultivation was far surpassing Yan Zhen’s, so even if it was like that, she wouldn’t be “unable to get out of bed”.

Thinking of this, Chen Xi’s cheeks flushed even more, and the snow-white jade legs under her black dress slightly clenched together.

Noticing that he was exposing himself, Yan Zhen quickly turned around, facing away from the beautiful master.

He stepped out of the bathtub and similarly used his Mystic Energy to evaporate the water. Then he took out a new set of clothes from his storage ring and put them on quickly, before shyly walking up to the beautiful master.

“Master, I’m sorry for making you sacrifice so much for me.”

Chen Xi calmed her emotions and gently smiled, saying:

“Zhen’er, I did not force myself, nor do I dislike cultivating with you, so you don’t need to apologize. Moreover, this is not the last time, but the beginning. When you reach the Mystic Warrior and Mystic Master realms, I will still use the method of dual cultivation to help you refine the Extreme Flame. If you truly feel sorry for me, then focus on your cultivation.”

Yan Zhen was almost moved to tears: the beautiful master was both powerful and beautiful, and she was so gentle and kind to him. It was truly a blessing from his previous life.

The only problem was that the beautiful master was gradually straying from the script, how should he deal with this?

“I understand, Master, I will work hard.”

“Good, that’s my good disciple.” Chen Xi reached out and patted Yan Zhen’s head, pausing for a long time before continuing, “Alright, let’s not talk about this anymore. Zhen’er, try to activate the Golden-Silver Flame within you.”

Yan Zhen opened his palm, focusing his mind to mobilize the spark of his cultivation technique. A strand of it flowed along the meridians to his palm and burst out into a golden and silver flame.

The golden and silver flames burned quietly, emanating intense heat. Yan Zhen felt his Mystic Energy being rapidly consumed.

    “Is, is this right, Master?”

    Chen Xi nodded slightly:

“Not bad, Zhen’er, you have a talent for controlling fire. The Golden-Silver Flame has high plasticity, and in battle, it can be shaped into weapons to counter metal and jade-type Mystic Artifacts. But Zhen’er, you are still at the Mystic Cultivator realm, so using the Extreme Flame will consume a lot of your Mystic Energy. You need to plan carefully when using it in battle.”

Yan Zhen indicated that he understood.

“Mm, these next few days, Zhen’er, you should rest and consolidate your rapidly rising realm. After the New Year, I will teach you more techniques for controlling fire.”

“Thank you, Master. Then I’ll be going?”

“Go, you’ve been here for a day and a night on the first day of the New Year, your family must be worried.”

    “Hehe, goodbye, Master~”

Yan Zhen scratched his head, activated the Star Shift Flame Seal in his palm, and disappeared.

After he left, Chen Xi sighed softly.

In fact, she wanted to linger a bit longer with Yan Zhen, to feel more of the warmth of their skin contact.

Chen Xi raised her right hand, and the large sleeve slowly slid down, revealing her fair and delicate wrist.

Her palm slowly opened, and a semi-transparent ice pearl hovered above it, with a vivid scarlet color inside, which was the blood she had specially frozen before.

    “It’s really done…”

She had united with her disciple.

From now on, she was no longer just his master.

Chen Xi smiled faintly, her elegant smile now carrying a touch of charm and seduction.

    A newly wedded immortal beauty.

    “Phew.”

Yan Zhen appeared on his own bed, heaving a big sigh. Thinking about the gentle figure of his master in his arms, his heart burned with passion, but then he remembered that his behavior had slightly deviated from the script, and the heat in his heart immediately subsided.

—No, I have to pull myself together. This is just a small setback, as long as I continue to play my role well, everything should be fine.

Thinking about the upcoming plot, Yan Zhen’s mood improved greatly.

He had leveled up, learned the “Eight Extremes Explosion”, and refined the Golden-Silver Flame. At this point, the script should arrange for a suitable “villain” for him to show off.

    And that villain…

“Cousin! Are you there? Your cousin and I have come to play with you~”

Ah, there’s his good cousin bringing the villain cousin to spank him.

Yan Zhen smiled graciously and went out to greet them.

  • They All Want to Be My Female Lead 43

    1. Peerless Beauty in the World

The tallest mountain Yan Zhen had ever seen was called Mount Everest, and the whitest snow was the snow on the peak of Everest.

But even on that snowy mountain at the top of the Earth, there would be no cherry blossoms blooming on the summit, let alone glittering gems.

Whether it was snowy mountains, cherry blossoms, or gems, they were all pleasing and beautiful sights of this world.

When they were combined together, the degree of beauty exponentially soared, emanating an indescribably peerless charm that could be called the most beautiful in the world!

The key was that there wasn’t just one, but a matching pair!

Double the peerless beauty in the world!

Adding the light and smooth silver-white hair floating and adorning them, half-concealing and half-revealing, that was equivalent to super extra happiness!

Yan Zhen stared blankly at his beautiful master in front of him, feeling a rush of blood surging to his head, making him dazed for a moment.

If his usual beautiful master was a cold and aloof fairy, then at this moment, she was a pure goddess!

Bathing together with her beloved disciple for the first time, even with Chen Xi’s many years of experience in calming her mind, it was of no use at all now. Seeing Yan Zhen look at her body and lose his composure like this, a thread of joy welled up in her heart. The shyness that followed made her subconsciously bend her jade-like arms and hold her ample bosom.

“Zhen’er, don’t stare at your master like that.”

Yan Zhen instantly came back to his senses, his handsome face turning bright red. He quickly covered his eyes with his hands.

“Sorry, Master! I won’t look anymore!”

Chen Xi was startled, realizing she had said the wrong thing. She silently cursed herself for being a fool.

Seeing Yan Zhen immediately not looking when he said he wouldn’t, she was half helpless and half amused. After a slight hesitation, she moved a bit closer to him.

The water rippled gently between them.

“Zhen’er, take your hands away. Your master will pass on the dual cultivation method to you.”

Really going to dual cultivate? There’s no need!

Yan Zhen was in a complete panic.

In this plot segment of refining the extreme flame, as long as his beautiful master passed on the flame normally and he directly skipped it, it would be fine.

How simple, how did it turn into dual cultivation?

    “Master, I’m shy~”

He didn’t take his hands away.

Although he really wanted to look, and even wanted to touch, he had to endure it!

—I am an emotionless leveling machine~

Yan Zhen silently chanted in his heart, comforting the long-nosed elephant on his boxers.

Chen Xi grabbed Yan Zhen’s hands and gently but firmly opened them, revealing those lively eyes.

Their gazes met. Yan Zhen was so ashamed that even his ears turned red. Chen Xi’s heart also raced, but neither of them looked away.

Chen Xi tried hard to maintain her expression and said indifferently:

“No need to be shy. Just treat it as a special cultivation lesson. First, remember the dual cultivation method. In a moment, leave everything to your master. Zhen’er, you just need to focus on feeling it.”

Although Chen Xi herself also had no experience, she was the master and should guide her own disciple.

Without letting go of Yan Zhen’s hands, Chen Xi’s face slowly approached Yan Zhen’s, touching her forehead to his like before.

Yan Zhen could feel that it wasn’t just his beautiful master’s forehead pressing against him, but also two extremely substantial soft mounds.

A faint pressure was transmitted from his chest, different from usual, making one even more addicted.

Soon, a warm current flowed into Yan Zhen’s eyebrow center, transforming into a dual cultivation method that directly conveyed the essence, unfolding in his mind.

—No, Master, I don’t want to learn any dual cultivation method!

However, with his heaven-defying comprehension ability, plus Chen Xi’s easy to understand explanations, he instantly understood it on the spot.

Yan Zhen opened his eyes, looked at his beautiful master’s flawless pretty face that was so close, and swallowed his saliva.

    “Master… Mmph!”

As soon as he opened his mouth, he was kissed by his beautiful master. Two snow-white jade-like arms reached over and hooked around his neck.

Out of instinct, Yan Zhen also stretched out his arms and embraced his beautiful master’s slender waist.

After a long while, their lips parted. Both of them were panting lightly.

Chen Xi held Yan Zhen’s face and said emotionally:

“It’s about to begin, Zhen’er. Let yourself go. Your master will guide you.”

Under the guidance of his beautiful master, the dual cultivation method automatically operated. Yan Zhen only felt an instinctive heat rising in his body, dispelling the coldness of the water.

Chen Xi’s snow-white delicate body also began to turn an alluring pink all over, becoming hot in Yan Zhen’s embrace.

With the sound of a low moan, the dual cultivation officially began.

    Phew.

The gold and silver flames slowly seeped out bit by bit from Chen Xi’s delicate body, silently burning all over her, searing the extremely cold water around them.

Chen Xi immediately operated the technique. The gold and silver flames surged along certain meridians on the surface of her body, gathering in her mouth and transforming into a quiet little flame seed.

Holding the flame seed with the Gold and Silver Fire, Chen Xi kissed Yan Zhen again, passing it into his mouth.

    —Hot!

Yan Zhen shuddered, as if he had swallowed a freshly cooked glutinous rice ball. It burned from his mouth to his throat, all the way through his chest, and finally to his dantian in his lower abdomen, aching with a burning pain.

He was about to cry out in alarm when a cool aura suddenly came from below, swirling in his dantian, quickly alleviating that scorching pain and making him feel warm and very comfortable.

    —Awesome!

Following his beautiful master’s instructions, Yan Zhen immediately operated the “Imperial Blaze Art”, controlling the weak technique flame seed to slowly wrap around the flame seed of the Gold and Silver Fire and devour it.

Because the flame seed of the Gold and Silver Fire had already been completely tamed by Chen Xi, Yan Zhen’s technique flame seed, even though it was ridiculously weak, could still rely on its own power to gradually consume it bit by bit.

However, relying solely on Yan Zhen’s strength, completely refining the flame seed of the Gold and Silver Fire would probably take a very long time. But now he also had the enhancement of dual cultivation with his beautiful master.

Chen Xi split off a thread of her half-saint power to help him refine it. It was estimated that it could be successfully refined in a day and night.

Of course, during this period, they needed to maintain the state of dual cultivation.

Whenever Yan Zhen exhausted his mystic power, Chen Xi would carefully transmit her own mystic power into his body.

As time passed, the water in the large bathtub that was originally bone-chillingly cold slowly boiled in the high temperature of the extreme flames, turning into scalding hot spring water.

As the water rippled, it reflected the intimate figures of the master and disciple.

A day and night later, Yan Zhen successfully refined the extreme flame, making the technique flame seed rise to the Mystic One level, displaying the gold and silver colors of the Gold and Silver Fire.

The aura on his body also soared along with it, skyrocketing from One-Star Mystic One to Five-Star Mystic One in one go, and then slowly dropping to Three-Star Mystic One.

    Bang!

The surging mystic power shook out of control, causing small cracks to appear on the large bathtub, and the water inside also splashed in all directions.

After venting, Yan Zhen’s aura calmed down, and he exited the cultivation state.

Feeling his entire body wrapped in snowy skin and tender flesh, Yan Zhen slowly opened his eyes. His pupils reflected the peerless snowy peaks. His gaze raised upwards before seeing his beautiful master’s pretty face.

    “Master…”

Yan Zhen didn’t know what to say for a moment, his emotions too complex.

But it didn’t matter anymore. He had messed up the act anyway and should start over.

“Don’t think too much, Zhen’er. It’s already over.”

Chen Xi gently caressed Yan Zhen’s face, then leaned over and kissed his forehead before getting up from the water.

However, as soon as she lifted her bottom, she let out a soft and charming moan. Then her waist went limp, and she sat back down again.

This time, Yan Zhen couldn’t help but let out an “Oh” sound, his face turning red.

    “Ma- Master?”

Chen Xi was very embarrassed. She had no experience. The first time lasted a day and night. At the same time, she had to protect Yan Zhen and replenish his energy for him, consuming a lot.

“Sorry, Zhen’er. Your master wasn’t paying attention for a moment.”

“Um, do you want me to support you?”

“No need. Your master will get up now. Zhen’er, don’t move first— Mm, Zhen’er? Why aren’t you listening…”

“Master, I didn’t want to either. This is an instinctive reaction!”

    “/(//o/ω/o//)/

  • They All Want to Be My Female Lead 42

    1. Now It Was Her Turn to Care for Him

    [Ding! Key plot opening]

[Current plot – Chapter 38: Refining the Extreme Flame]

[Acting requirement: Refine the heaven and earth extreme flame given by Chen Xi]

    [Completion 0%]

The system issued the mission at an inopportune time, but Yan Zhen wasn’t in the mood to pay attention to it right now.

Because his beautiful master actually said she wanted to dual cultivate with him…

    Did he hear wrong?

“Master, you said dual cultivate, right?”

“As I just said, your master is now the spirit of the Fire Tempering Star Space. Besides being able to suppress the fierceness of extreme flames, I can also pass on the flame to others through dual cultivation after refining an extreme flame. The Gold and Silver Fire originally belonged to your master. As long as we dual cultivate, it can be directly passed on to you without any risk.”

There was not a trace of hesitation on Chen Xi’s face, as cold and aloof as ever, as if dual cultivation was just a small matter to her.

However, Yan Zhen couldn’t remain calm. What the heck was dual cultivation to pass on flames? This segment wasn’t in the script!

[Ding! System kind reminder: Chen Xi proposes dual cultivation to pass on flames in Chapter 520]

Chapter 520? Yan Zhen quickly recalled the contents of that chapter and suddenly realized.

That chapter wrote that in order to confront the upcoming powerful enemy, Yan Zhen needed to greatly improve his strength. At that time, Yan Zhen had just broken through not long ago. To improve further, he had to refine a new extreme flame.

However, extreme flames were difficult to find. Yan Zhen was very troubled by this and rushed about every day, but still had no results.

So his beautiful master proposed “dual cultivation to pass on flames”.

Even with full preparation, the success rate of refining extreme flames was still very low, and one had to endure great pain. But if he dual cultivated with his beautiful master, her Starlight Glaze Fire could be passed on to Yan Zhen with zero risk.

Of course, Yan Zhen firmly refused, with the reason that he couldn’t commit an act that would harm his own master for the sake of power.

—Dual cultivation to pass on flames was actually real! Was this kind of ambiguous setting something a harem novel without a female lead should have?

Yan Zhen really couldn’t understand this original author, writing whatever nonsense.

However, his beautiful master proposing dual cultivation to pass on flames was in Chapter 500 something. Why was she proposing it now?

Damn it, in any case, he had to refuse. Only this way would it conform to the protagonist’s character setting.

“Master, I think, uh, isn’t dual cultivation not very good? After all, we are master and disciple.”

    Chen Xi’s expression was calm:

“Since Zhen’er, you chose the ‘Imperial Blaze Art’, your master has to ensure that you can cultivate it well. The success rate of refining extreme flames is extremely low. Perhaps you were lucky and succeeded this time, but what about next time? The time after that? You won’t have good luck every time, and the consequence of bad luck is perishing in body and Dao. Your master can let you try your best, but can’t just watch you risk your life every time. Do you understand?”

    “Master…”

Yan Zhen was greatly moved. It turned out his beautiful master had already considered things to this extent for him? She was willing to sacrifice her own chastity to create a stable cultivation environment for him.

His beautiful master was really too good to him, sob sob sob~

    But this wasn’t right!

This was a harem novel world without a female lead. As the protagonist, an emotionless leveling machine, could he dual cultivate with his beautiful master? He couldn’t. There was no such plot, understand?

Besides, he wouldn’t fail in refining extreme flames. The later it got, the more he got the hang of it. When he advanced to Mystic Lord, with the assistance of the Fire Tempering Star Space, there was basically no risk. So this worry was unnecessary!

But how should he explain it to his beautiful master?

“Master, um, I can’t harm Master for my own sake!”

Yan Zhen tried to play the emotional card to make his beautiful master change her mind.

However, Chen Xi’s heart was moved upon hearing this: This child, he was still the same as his previous life, knowing to care for her.

Yan Zhen’s words made Chen Xi even more determined. While reaching out her jade-like hand to gently stroke his head, she said:

“Silly child, your master will likely be imprisoned in this Fire Tempering Star Space and not gain freedom in this lifetime. This body is already a useless shell. If it can be used for Zhen’er’s cultivation, nothing could be better. What harm is there to speak of?”

    “Master, don’t say that…”

Wait until we advance to Mystic Lord, then we can take over the Fire Tempering Star Space and give Master back her freedom. Don’t give up hope of escaping so quickly!

Yan Zhen was a bit scared. His beautiful master said this as if she was going to become his cauldron. It was too outrageous!

Little did he know, Chen Xi indeed planned to do so.

Originally, Chen Xi intended to maintain her persona as the master and slowly capture Yan Zhen’s heart through daily interactions. But that New Year’s Eve dinner moved her greatly, making her resolve to abandon her own pride and actively become Yan Zhen’s cultivation cauldron.

Chen Xi was the spirit of the Fire Tempering Star Space. Her actively becoming Yan Zhen’s cultivation cauldron was equivalent to Yan Zhen indirectly becoming the master of the Fire Tempering Star Space. So he could borrow the power of Chen Xi, that is, the Fire Tempering Star Space, to refine extreme flames.

If Chen Xi had already refined an extreme flame, she could even pass on the flame with zero risk.

In her previous life, she watched her disciple risk his life to refine extreme flames again and again, but she thought this was a necessary trial on the path to becoming stronger. Even though she knew of a safer method to pass on flames, she didn’t intend to let him use it.

Until her feelings gradually changed, she finally proposed that she could dual cultivate with him to refine extreme flames safely and stably, but he firmly refused her.

Because Yan Zhen cared about her as his master.

Then now, it was Chen Xi’s turn to care for her precious disciple.

—Ahem, of course, it wasn’t without a tiny bit of selfish motive~

“Alright, Zhen’er, your master has made up her mind. There’s no need to say more.”

After saying that, Chen Xi telekinetically summoned the large bathtub Yan Zhen usually used for medicinal baths. With a flip of her jade-like hand, the colorful Starlight Glaze Fire was tossed into the tub, but it didn’t burn the tub at all.

Chen Xi made a hand seal, and the colorful flames instantly froze, actually condensing the fire into ice. She then flicked her finger, and the ice turned into water, filling the tub.

This was the technique of a Master Alchemist!

The water with traces of colorful light emitted a faint white mist, looking very cold at a glance.

“This way, it can reduce the high temperature generated when refining the extreme flame… Zhen’er, take off your clothes and get in.”

Yan Zhen’s scalp went numb. He tried to struggle and said:

“Master, I think we still need to reconsider—Ahhhhh!”

Before he finished speaking, Yan Zhen was grabbed by Chen Xi. She untied his waistband, shook off his clothes, even stripped off his long-nosed elephant patterned boxers, and threw him into the tub naked.

With a splash, water splashed everywhere.

Yan Zhen shrank in the icy water, his face red and ears burning, looking at his beautiful master with a cold and stern face, shivering.

He realized that his beautiful master was serious!

“Zhen’er, turn around first. Your master needs to undress.”

That cold and aloof face of Chen Xi suddenly showed a trace of unnaturalness, or rather, shyness?

“Master, don’t be impulsive. We can still discuss this properly—Glub glub glub.”

A fair jade-like hand pressed on top of Yan Zhen’s head, forcefully pushing him under the water, cutting off his words.

Then Yan Zhen heard the sound of silk rustling above the water. Then, a fair and delicate foot first stepped into the water. His gaze moved up, seeing legs like pillars, straight and long.

Yan Zhen widened his eyes, watching his beautiful master’s second jade-like foot enter as well, followed by large expanses of snowy skin, swaying in the flowing water, dazzling his eyes.

When his beautiful master was completely in the water, the jade-like hand pressing his head let go. Yan Zhen immediately floated up, gasping for air.

    “Zhen’er, it’s about to begin.”

His beautiful master’s clear voice called back Yan Zhen’s attention. Focusing his gaze on her side, his eyes instantly went straight.

    1. The Beautiful Master’s Method of Passing on the Flame

Chen Xi gazed at Yan Zhen with a gentle look:

“The three techniques each have their strengths and weaknesses. Naturally, your master hopes that you can inherit your master’s technique. The Grand Void Sword Saint was said to have the strongest offensive power at the same cultivation level. If you want to learn the sword, you can choose his sword art. However, Zhen’er, your bloodline and physique lean towards fire, so perhaps the ‘Imperial Blaze Art’ is the most suitable for you—think it over carefully. No matter which one you choose, your master will teach you wholeheartedly.”

“No need to think, Master. I choose the ‘Imperial Blaze Art’!” Yan Zhen’s eyes were resolute. “The best technique is right in front of me. Of course I have to seize the opportunity. If I don’t dare to try because the cultivation difficulty is too high, I might as well give up cultivation and be an ordinary person!”

Hearing this, Chen Xi smiled with satisfaction.

These words were exactly the same as what he said in his previous life. Indeed, Zhen’er was still her Zhen’er. He wouldn’t lose his brave heart just because she was a bit more gentle with him.

“Since you’ve decided, your master will pass on the ‘Imperial Blaze Art’ to you.”

    “Thank you, Master!”

“Mm, the essence scriptures of the ‘Imperial Blaze Art’ contain an immense imperial pressure that you can’t bear in your current state. Your master will have to share the memory with you. Zhen’er, open your mind.”

    “I understand, Master.”

Yan Zhen closed his eyes. Soon, the elegant fragrance from his beautiful master’s body slowly wafted closer, and her forehead lightly touched his.

—Hm? Is it necessary to share memories like this? Can’t it be transmitted remotely?

    Yan Zhen grew doubtful.

—Forget it. How to pass it on is his beautiful master’s business. It’s useless for him to overthink.

    “Starting now, Zhen’er.”

Speaking at such a close distance, his beautiful master’s slightly warm breath fell on Yan Zhen’s face, seemingly carrying a faint sweetness.

Ripples emerged on the calm lake of Yan Zhen’s heart, but he quickly suppressed them.

A faint glow lit up where the master and disciple’s foreheads touched, growing brighter and brighter. From a distance, it looked as if the two were holding a dazzling star between them.

As the glow brightened, Chen Xi’s technique memory flowed like a warm current, slowly entering Yan Zhen’s mind.

A full half an hour later, Chen Xi finally finished passing the complete “Imperial Blaze Art” to Yan Zhen.

After the transmission, Chen Xi separated from Yan Zhen and discovered that the attributes of his mystic power had already begun to change.

The reborn Chen Xi naturally knew how highly compatible the “Imperial Blaze Art” was with Yan Zhen. It was simply tailor-made for him.

Another half an hour passed. Yan Zhen successfully condensed the technique’s fire seed in his dantian, and under the tempering of the fire seed, all of his mystic power transformed into fire mystic power, taking on a domineering and cool white-gold color.

He slowly concluded his cultivation and exited the cultivation state, reopening his eyes.

He had just advanced to One-Star Mystic One yesterday. After cultivating the “Imperial Blaze Art”, his mystic power had become incomparably stable and even richer.

Compared to yesterday, his cultivation level didn’t change much, but his combat power had likely more than doubled.

The system’s prompt of 100% plot completion sounded in his ears. Yan Zhen casually claimed the reward and found that it was another useless special trump card. He threw it into the system inventory without even looking at it.

    “Master, I succeeded!”

“Not bad. Your qi is continuous. Perhaps you can quickly attempt to break through to Two-Star Mystic One, provided that you have already refined a strand of heaven and earth extreme flame and upgraded the technique’s fire seed to the Mystic One level. Otherwise, your cultivation will be forever stuck at One-Star Mystic One.”

Yan Zhen flattered with a grin, “Master letting me learn the ‘Imperial Blaze Art’ means you must have prepared a heaven and earth extreme flame for me in advance, right?”

“You’re quite clever.” Chen Xi’s cold expression quickly melted away. She looked at Yan Zhen with meaningful eyes. “Apart from the Starlight Glaze Fire, your master indeed has another strand of heaven and earth extreme flame that can be passed on to you.”

“Hehe, Master treats me the best.” Yan Zhen buttered up and curiously asked, “What kind of extreme flame is it?”

Chen Xi flipped her jade-like hand, and a strand of fierce gold and silver flame suddenly ignited in her palm. An intense high temperature immediately descended, making Yan Zhen feel as if he was in a furnace.

“This fire is the first strand of extreme flame your master refined. It’s called ‘Gold and Silver Fire’. Although it’s not on the list of extreme flames, and its power is relatively weak, its functionality is powerful. Not only does it have high plasticity, able to transform into a sword or armor, but it also has a certain corrosive effect on metal and jade-type mystic tools. When facing sword cultivators or blade cultivators, it can easily gain the upper hand.”

Wow, Yan Zhen’s eyes reflected the gold and silver flames, his face full of desire.

Although he already knew the plot, who wouldn’t covet the cool treasures in the novel when reading it?

What Yan Zhen coveted the most in this harem novel without a female lead was the heaven and earth extreme flames. Each one was stronger and cooler than the last!

“The Gold and Silver Fire is so cool. Thank you for the gift, Master. I will definitely treat it well.”

Yan Zhen was about to reach out his hand when his beautiful master slapped it away.

“Take your paws away. Do you not want to live anymore? Although the Gold and Silver Fire isn’t as powerful as other famous extreme flames on the list, it’s still not something you can touch right now.”

“Ah, this… If I can’t even touch it, how do I refine it?”

Yan Zhen asked knowingly, perfectly acting out a confused and silly expression.

“With your current cultivation, it’s absolutely impossible for you to refine the Gold and Silver Fire. The moment the flames enter your body, you would turn to ashes. Your master has to use an alternative method to pass this fire to you.”

    “What method?”

Seeing Yan Zhen’s eager look, the corners of Chen Xi’s mouth slightly curved into a beautiful arc, and her heart also sped up a little.

But she couldn’t smile now, lest she reveal her intentions.

She tightened her face again and said indifferently, “This ‘Fire Tempering Star Space’ has an extremely strong suppressive power over heaven and earth extreme flames. As your master is the spirit of this place, as long as I activate the array formation plaza under my feet, I can greatly reduce the wildness of the extreme flames. Even so, refining extreme flames still has great risks. If you’re the slightest bit careless, you’ll explode and die. Moreover, when the flames enter your body, it’s extremely, extremely painful. Ordinary people would find it hard to endure.”

Hearing this, Yan Zhen felt a bit frightened in his heart.

The process of refining extreme flames was described in great detail in the script, with a whole chapter of 2,000 words describing how painful it was for him. Afterwards, he even fainted for a day and a night due to the excruciating pain. Just thinking about it was scary.

It was probably to showcase the protagonist’s extraordinary willpower, after all, this was a leveling up and monster-slaying harem novel without a female lead.

However, Yan Zhen now possessed the system’s “skip” function. As long as he endured the pain for a short while at the beginning, then directly skipped, it would be fine. He wasn’t worried at all.

“I’m not afraid, Master. I can endure it!”

“But your master is afraid. Your master is afraid of accidentally losing you, you silly disciple.”

“Uh, there’s no other way. We have to give it a try.”

    “There’s an even safer method.”

“An even safer method? Is there one?”

There wasn’t, right? This wave relied on him exerting the power of the protagonist’s plot armor and gritting his teeth to get through it.

    “There is.”

    “What method?”

Yan Zhen was at a loss, his little brows slightly furrowing in thought.

Chen Xi paused for a long time, then let out a soft sigh, as if she had made up her mind. She resolutely said:

“It’s for you and your master to engage in dual cultivation, and your master will refine the Gold and Silver Fire for you.”

Yan Zhen froze for a moment, then his eyes slowly widened, as shocked as if he had seen a ghost.

—Dual cultivation… When did this plot appear???

    1. The Beautiful Master’s Mysterious Cultivation Technique

    On New Year’s Eve night.

Yan Zhen had a dream. In the dream, he was still a little child, being chased by a monster named “Year”, running away desperately while crying out. Then, his beautiful master in white robes and with silver hair gracefully descended, killing the “Year Beast” with one strike and saving him.

“Are you willing to become my disciple?”

His beautiful master hugged his young self and asked.

Little Yan Zhen looked up at his beautiful master’s peerless fairy-like face with utmost admiration, nodding repeatedly like a pecking chick.

His beautiful master smiled faintly and asked again:

“Then, are you willing to become my husband?”

    Little Yan Zhen instantly froze.

“Not saying anything means you agree by default?” The gentle smile on his beautiful master’s face became strange. “Then from today onward, you are my husband.”

Little Yan Zhen was dumbfounded. He heard his beautiful master say:

“Good husband, let’s consummate our marriage now~”

After saying that, she eagerly kissed him.

Little Yan Zhen only felt an indescribable softness enveloping him.

At this moment, a red system interface suddenly popped up in front of his eyes. A cold, mechanical voice broadcasted:

[Ding! System Warning: Detected that the host’s behavior seriously violates the protagonist’s character setting. Please stop immediately. Please stop immediately.]

    Ding! Ding! Ding!

Instantly, hundreds and thousands of red system interfaces popped up around him, repeatedly broadcasting the same sentence.

[Please stop immediately. Please stop immediately.]

Little Yan Zhen’s scalp went numb, his eyes filled with horror. He finally screamed out loud.

    “Ahhhhh—”

On the altar in the crystal space.

    “—Ahhhhh!”

Yan Zhen woke up from the dream with a shout, panting heavily, his chest palpitating.

    “Awake?”

His beautiful master’s voice came from above, but Yan Zhen’s vision was blocked by two towering G-peaks, unable to see her face.

“Master, how did I…” Yan Zhen blinked his eyes, slowly coming back to his senses. “Ah! Master, I’m sorry. I’ll get up right away.”

Yan Zhen hurriedly sprang up from his beautiful master’s lap pillow, but unexpectedly, his face bumped right into the heavy G-peaks and was bounced back.

Chen Xi’s cheeks turned slightly red from her disciple’s series of blind operations. She reached out her hands and lightly pressed down on him, saying:

“Don’t rush, Zhen’er. You just got drunk and slept on your master’s lap for a while.”

“So that’s what happened. Thank you for taking care of me, Master.” Seeing that his beautiful master wasn’t angry, Yan Zhen also relaxed. Then he tentatively asked, “Um, I didn’t do anything weird, right?”

“No,” Chen Xi shook her head with a smile. “But you did say a few things in your sleep.”

    Yan Zhen’s heart sank.

    “What did I say?”

    Chen Xi tried to recall.

“Zhen’er, you said, ‘Master smells nice and feels soft. I want to take a bite.’ Hehe~ Your master isn’t a snack, you know.”

“Ah?” Yan Zhen was startled and hurriedly explained, “Master, I didn’t mean it that way. I- I might have dreamed that I was hungry, so I said those things!”

Chen Xi just smiled without saying anything.

Yan Zhen felt even more guilty, secretly thinking, how could I say such things in my sleep? Could it be that deep down in my heart, I really have the desire to disrespect my master? No! I’m not like that! I’m just an emotionless leveling machine!

“Alright, Zhen’er, get up and clear your mind. While there’s still time, your master will pass on the cultivation techniques to you.”

    Cultivation techniques!

At the mention of this, Yan Zhen immediately perked up. He got up, patted his cheeks, then knelt upright in front of his beautiful master, looking at her with anticipation.

Chen Xi also put on a solemn expression and said seriously:

“Your master has three mystic techniques here. Zhen’er, you can choose one to cultivate.”

    Yan Zhen quickly nodded twice.

“The first one is what your master is currently cultivating, called the ‘Star Dance Divine Art’. It’s a sacred mystic technique that can directly lead to the Mystic Saint realm.”

The “Star Dance Divine Art” involves the cultivator absorbing the power of the stars and integrating it into their own mystic power, giving the mystic power various wondrous uses. It’s especially suitable for Master Alchemists.

“The second one is something your master obtained by chance, called the ‘Grand Void Sword Art’. It was created by the Grand Void Sword Saint and is also a sacred mystic technique.”

The “Grand Void Sword Art” is relatively straightforward. It’s the sword Dao of the void. When cultivated to a profound level, one can sever the void with their sword, possessing powerful offensive capabilities.

“As for the third one, it’s a strange mystic technique derived from this mysterious and unfathomable Fire Tempering Star Space. After your master unexpectedly merged with the star space and became its spirit, she learned the complete chapters. Although your master hasn’t cultivated it, based on her deductions, this technique has a high possibility of directly leading to the Celestial Sovereign realm!”

Celestial Sovereigns are the pinnacle existences on the Mystical Heavenly Continent, truly invincible supreme experts who can destroy a country like the Gallo Kingdom with a single finger.

Gulp~ Yan Zhen swallowed his saliva, craving it. He asked:

    “What technique is that?”

Chen Xi looked at Yan Zhen and slowly recited:

    “The ‘Imperial Blaze Art’.”

    —Here it comes!

Yan Zhen got excited. At the same time, the system also issued a mission.

    [Ding! Key plot opening]

[Current plot – Chapter 36: Imperial Blaze Art]

[Acting requirement: Cultivate the “Imperial Blaze Art” and transform mystic power into fire attribute]

    [Completion 0%]

That wasn’t all. With another ding, a new interface popped up on the side.

[Ding! System kind reminder: The “Imperial Blaze Art” is the protagonist’s fundamental technique. If unable to cultivate it, you need to act again from the beginning]

—Rest assured, I’m definitely learning the “Imperial Blaze Art”. Even God can’t stop me, I’m telling you!

“Master, I choose the ‘Imperial Blaze Art’!”

“Little greedy ghost, don’t be in a hurry to choose. Your master hasn’t finished speaking.” Chen Xi glanced at Yan Zhen indifferently, a hint of playfulness in her eyes. “Although the ‘Imperial Blaze Art’ is incomparably powerful, it also has a fatal flaw.”

    —I know, I know, but I won’t say it. I’ll just ask.

    “What flaw?”

“After cultivating the ‘Imperial Blaze Art’, a strange fire seed will condense within your body, serving as the foundation of the technique. Every time you reach a major realm, you must refine a strand of heaven and earth extreme flame to upgrade the fire seed within your body.”

“Refine heaven and earth extreme flame?”

“That’s right. From Mystic One to Celestial Sovereign, you need to refine at least ten strands of heaven and earth extreme flame. If you don’t refine heaven and earth extreme flame, your cultivation will slowly stagnate until you refine it. Zhen’er, do you know what this means?”

    Yan Zhen weakly nodded.

Chen Xi said to him seriously:

“Heaven and earth extreme flames are extremely rare. Even mystic cultivators with profound cultivation find it difficult to collect a single strand, let alone ten. And once you advance to a new realm, if you can’t refine heaven and earth extreme flame in time, your cultivation will be hindered. You could say that if you choose to cultivate the ‘Imperial Blaze Art’, apart from cultivation, you also need to spend a lot of time and effort to find and even seize heaven and earth extreme flames. Now, do you still want to choose it, Zhen’er?”

—Of course I do. “Seeking heaven and earth extreme flames” is the main plotline of this harem novel without a female lead. That’s why the system said if the “Imperial Blaze Art” isn’t cultivated successfully, it needs to be redone from the beginning. Because without learning the “Imperial Blaze Art”, the subsequent main plotline can’t be developed.

However, Yan Zhen still showed a conflicted expression on the surface, displaying that he was both moved by the Celestial Sovereign-level mystic technique and worried about its extremely high cultivation requirements.

“Which one does Master think is better for me to choose?”

  • They All Want to Be My Female Lead 39

    1. Eating New Year’s Eve Dinner Together

“Zhen’er, come sit beside your master.”

Chen Xi patted the spot next to her. Her usually cold face now emitted a faint, gentle glow, like a holy mother.

    “Okay, Master.”

Yan Zhen obediently knelt down beside his beautiful master and picked up the wine pot to fill the cups.

The aroma of wine mixed with the fragrance of the dishes was the scent of happiness that common people sought.

    “Master, please enjoy.”

Chen Xi picked up the small wine cup and brought it to her lips, taking a light sip.

The wine moistened her lips, sparkling faintly under the blazing starlight in this space, adding a touch of moving charm.

“Not bad wine… Zhen’er, why don’t you have some with your master?”

Yan Zhen didn’t like drinking much, but he didn’t refuse his beautiful master’s suggestion. After pouring another cup for his master, he filled one for himself too.

“Master, I toast this cup to you, thanking you for your guidance these past few months.”

After saying that, Yan Zhen closed his eyes and downed the cup of wine in one gulp, feeling a burning sensation from his mouth to his throat. A thin blush quickly rose on his cheeks.

He was a lightweight when it came to alcohol.

Seeing her disciple’s face turn red after drinking one small cup of wine, Chen Xi’s heart instantly rippled with layers of emotion, secretly thinking how adorable~

Yan Zhen opened his eyes and discovered his beautiful master staring at him, making him feel awkward.

“Master, try the dishes. They’re all made by the head chefs at home and taste quite good.”

Chen Xi looked over the dishes and asked, “Zhen’er, which ones do you like?”

“Me?” Yan Zhen blinked. “I prefer meat dishes, like braised pork, roast duck, fried chicken, and the like. But I guessed Master’s taste would be lighter, so I didn’t bring that much meat. What does Master like to eat? I’ll go get it.”

“No need. These are enough. Your master will try the braised pork you like first.”

Chen Xi picked up her chopsticks and picked up a chunk of braised pork. The square piece of meat was already so tender it was like tofu. Pressing down with the chopsticks could easily break it apart.

Chen Xi broke off a small piece and brought it to her mouth. Indeed, it melted as soon as it entered.

Of course, to her tongue that had tasted all kinds of delicacies, the flavor could only be considered ordinary. But she was very happy in her heart.

Because this was the “New Year’s Eve dinner” that Yan Zhen had specially prepared for her.

    “How does it taste, Master?”

    “Not bad.”

    “Then please have more, Master.”

    “Mm.”

Chen Xi used her chopsticks to break off another large piece. After picking it up, she brought it to Yan Zhen’s mouth.

    “Zhen’er, you eat too.”

Yan Zhen was stunned for a moment and said awkwardly, “Master doesn’t need to mind me. I can pick it up myself.”

“You can’t eat what your master picks up for you?”

“Uh, that’s not what I meant.”

    “Open your mouth, Zhen’er.”

    “…”

Under his beautiful master’s quiet gaze, Yan Zhen had no choice but to open his mouth and eat the meat held by the chopsticks.

    “Is it good?”

Yan Zhen nodded vigorously. It seemed to taste a bit better than what he had eaten from the table earlier.

    “Then have another bite?”

His beautiful master’s gentle voice almost made Yan Zhen nod again. Coming back to his senses, he hurriedly said, “I can do it myself. Master, please try the other dishes.”

    “Alright then.”

Chen Xi didn’t insist. This time, she picked up a large prawn and put it in her bowl. She looked at it, seemingly not knowing where to start.

Seeing this, Yan Zhen tried asking, “Master, should I help you peel the shell?”

    Chen Xi nodded.

    “Then I’ll trouble you, Zhen’er.”

“No trouble at all. It’s a small matter.”

Yan Zhen skillfully peeled off the shrimp shell, dipped the shrimp meat in minced garlic vinegar, and then placed it back in his beautiful master’s bowl.

Chen Xi ate the shrimp meat coated in minced garlic vinegar and smiled faintly.

“I brought two kinds of dipping sauces. Besides minced garlic vinegar, there’s also scallion oil. Master can also try dipping in scallion oil for a different flavor.”

“Then I’ll have to trouble Zhen’er to peel another shrimp for your master.”

“Leave it to me. Master, just eat as you please.”

Yan Zhen nimbly peeled another large prawn. After dipping it in scallion oil, he was about to place it in his beautiful master’s bowl when he saw her use her free left hand to tuck her silver-white hair behind her ear, then slightly open her mouth and come forward, biting the shrimp meat.

Yan Zhen froze, dumbly watching his beautiful master bite away the shrimp meat he was holding, feeling the lingering softness and slipperiness on his fingers. He swallowed his saliva with a gulp.

Chen Xi slowly chewed for a while, then gently swallowed and elegantly licked her lips, saying, “It indeed has a different flavor. Let’s try some others… Zhen’er, don’t just stand there. Eat together. There are so many dishes that your master can’t finish alone.”

    “Oh~”

Yan Zhen started eating big mouthfuls along with her, occasionally picking up some dishes for his beautiful master.

Chen Xi would also pick up dishes for him and even feed him.

Seeing the gentle smile on his beautiful master’s face that was like melting ice and snow, Yan Zhen didn’t think too much. He just thought she was happy because it was the New Year and readily accepted being fed.

“Come, Zhen’er, toast with your master.”

    “Alright.”

“This wine is indeed not bad. Let’s have another cup.”

    “Mm.”

    “Happy New Year’s Eve. Cheers.”

    “Happy New Year’s Eve.”

“Your master will also toast you a cup.”

    “Ah? Oh.”

    “…”

    “…”

Cup after cup, Yan Zhen couldn’t hold his liquor and was already dizzy.

Chen Xi, on the other hand, didn’t show any abnormality at all, except for a few shades of blush on her pretty face, as if she had applied rouge.

“Zhen’er, your face is so red. Are you drunk?”

    “A- a little.”

“Then sit closer and lean on your master.”

Saying that, Chen Xi reached out her left arm and encircled Yan Zhen’s waist, letting him intimately lean against her body.

With the alcohol going to his head, Yan Zhen felt his mind heavy and sluggish. He didn’t resist at all and instead leaned over as if using his beautiful master’s shoulder as a pillow.

“Master smells so nice.” Yan Zhen sniffed and said dazedly, “Smelling it makes me a bit sleepy.”

Hearing this, Chen Xi smiled with pursed lips and held him a bit tighter.

“If you want to sleep, then sleep. When you wake up, your master will give you a big, big red envelope.”

“Red envelope… is it a cultivation technique?”

“It’s your master’s most precious thing.”

“Most precious… Master treats me so well~”

    “Good boy, sleep.”

    “Oh~”

Yan Zhen slowly closed his eyes, his body softly sliding down from his beautiful master’s shoulder.

Chen Xi steadily caught him, then lightly placed him on her lap, giving him a lap pillow.

Lowering her head and looking at Yan Zhen’s quiet sleeping face, Chen Xi’s long-suppressed surging emotions silently erupted. No longer enduring, her jade-like hand caressed his cheek, gently rubbing. Her five fingers entered his hair, tenderly combing through it.

Yan Zhen groggily said, “Master, tickles~”

Hearing this kind of silly and cute voice, Chen Xi smiled knowingly. Then she lowered her head and lightly kissed his forehead.

    Smooch.

Stopping at that, separating after a touch, leaving only a faint residue of wine.

    — Kissing Yan Zhen’s forehead while he was asleep was something Chen Xi had always wanted to do in her previous life but couldn’t. Now she easily accomplished it.

But she wasn’t satisfied with just this.

She still wanted to kiss openly and aboveboard.

    “Wait until tomorrow.”

Chen Xi made up her mind.

  • It turns out, they are the protagonists chapter 40

Chapter 40: You Not Existing Is Very Important to Me

Deep within the Dragon Head Forest, Mu Zhi’an led Bai Ruoxi to a secluded cave, hidden amidst a tangle of ancient trees and thick undergrowth.

Once inside, he retrieved a paper crane from his storage ring and tossed it out the entrance. The crane, enveloped in a faint glow, soared into the sky.

Mu Zhi’an turned to Bai Ruoxi. “Can you sense the Heavenly Dao Aura from here?”

Back at the clearing, there had been too many witnesses. If Bai Ruoxi had attempted to claim the aura, the others would have turned on her immediately, making her the target of their combined wrath.

Even with the support of the Mu family’s two Core Formation experts, it would have been a dangerous gamble, giving the black-robed man an opportunity to escape.

But here, in this secluded cave, there was no such risk. No one knew who had taken the aura.

    “I’ll try,” Bai Ruoxi replied.

She closed her eyes, and the bronze sword materialized behind her, its ancient aura filling the cave.

Moments later, Mu Zhi’an felt a wave of warmth wash over him.

He looked up to see a sphere of milky white light floating into the cave, illuminating the darkness.

It was the Heavenly Dao Aura!

    She really can attract it.

But, is it because of the sword?

He sensed the aura circling Bai Ruoxi’s sword, as if drawn to its ancient power.

Bai Ruoxi opened her eyes and extended her hand.

The aura settled gently in her palm, its warmth spreading through her meridians, a comforting sensation that made her sigh in contentment.

No wonder everyone coveted this treasure.

With this, even a pig could reach Foundation Establishment in a few years.

It was truly a priceless artifact.

Bai Ruoxi looked at the aura, a conflicted expression on her face.

Finally, she turned to Mu Zhi’an and offered him the aura.

“Young Master Mu, I can never repay your kindness. Please accept this as a token of my gratitude.”

Mu Zhi’an shook his head, refusing her offer.

She frowned, about to speak, but he interrupted her.

“There’s no need to decide who gets the aura right now.”

“Regardless of who ends up possessing it, for now, you need to hold onto it.”

She raised an eyebrow, her gaze searching his face. “Why?”

“This isn’t the place to explain. You’ll understand once we leave the cave,” he replied.

They couldn’t linger here for too long. They had to leave before the others grew suspicious.

Bai Ruoxi didn’t press him further. After spending the past few days with him, she had learned to trust his judgment.

Honestly, if the timing wasn’t so sensitive, she would have asked him about his motives.

If he didn’t even want the Heavenly Dao Aura, what could possibly entice him?

As she took a step forward, a chill ran down her spine. She whirled around, her eyes widening in horror.

A black viper, its scales gleaming in the dim light, was staring at Mu Zhi’an with chilling malice.

    A Core Formation demon?!

She grabbed Mu Zhi’an’s shoulder and pulled him back, her sword flashing out to strike the viper.

    *Hiss!*

The viper dodged her attack, spitting a stream of venom that struck her shoulder.

As they watched, the viper transformed into a human figure.

    It was the black-robed man!

His face was pale, his spiritual energy unstable, but his eyes burned with a cold fury as he stared at them.

    Or rather, at Bai Ruoxi.

“Where is it?” he demanded, his voice a menacing growl.

Mu Zhi’an frowned. “You’re still alive?”

The black-robed man chuckled. “You almost had me there, Young Master Mu.”

“You humans… your schemes are truly devious, even for a Foundation Establishment cultivator.”

“But while you have your tricks, we have our own methods of survival.” He looked at Mu Zhi’an, his eyes cold and predatory.

“Are you surprised, Young Master Mu?”

As he spoke, a surge of spiritual energy erupted from him. Despite his injuries, his Core Formation power was still formidable.

Bai Ruoxi clutched her shoulder, a wave of weakness washing over her.

    The venom!

It was disrupting her spiritual energy, making it difficult to even summon her sword.

“Give up, girl. That sword might be troublesome, but you’re just a Foundation Establishment cultivator. Once I seal your meridians, you’ll be helpless,” the black-robed man said, his gaze fixed on Mu Zhi’an.

“Do you want a quick death, Young Master Mu? Or would you prefer something a little more… painful?”

Mu Zhi’an blinked. “Is there a difference?”

“Hand over the Heavenly Dao Aura, and I’ll grant you a swift death.”

“It’s not here,” Mu Zhi’an replied, glancing at the cave entrance.

The black-robed man scoffed. “Do you take me for a fool, Young Master Mu? It’s in your little girlfriend’s possession, isn’t it?”

“Since you won’t cooperate, I’ll take it myself.”

He lunged towards Bai Ruoxi, but Mu Zhi’an stepped in front of her, shielding her with his body.

The black-robed man chuckled. “How touching. But what can a Foundation Establishment cultivator like you do against me?”

Mu Zhi’an stared at him, his gaze drifting towards the cave entrance. “I might not be able to do much, but perhaps you should take a look behind you?”

“Are you suggesting those fools have caught up already?”

The black-robed man laughed. “They think I’m dead. They’re probably still wandering around, searching for you.”

    That was his true advantage.

As a demon, he could shed his skin every few months, creating a convincing illusion of death.

However, this ability could only be used when he was severely injured. If he didn’t use it within a certain timeframe, it would become unusable.

As a Core Formation expert, he rarely needed to resort to such tactics. He was powerful enough to handle most threats.

He’d underestimated this Foundation Establishment brat.

But it was over now. No one would interfere this time.

“Since you won’t hand over the aura, I’ll take it by force!”

He lunged at Mu Zhi’an, who stood his ground, seemingly resigned to his fate.

The black-robed man stared into his eyes, searching for fear, for a flicker of weakness, hoping to see his composure crumble, to hear him beg for mercy.

But he saw nothing but indifference.

    Why is he still pretending?!

He channeled his spiritual energy, forming an invisible blade that shot towards Mu Zhi’an.

    *Clang!*

A sword flashed out, blocking the attack.

The black-robed man whirled around to see a woman in a moon-white robe standing at the cave entrance. Her face was veiled, but her figure was alluring, her eyes cold and sharp as they met his.

    “…The Two Polarities Sect.”

He stared at her, his voice a raspy whisper.

The Demon Empress had never dared to invade the Eastern Realm because of the Two Polarities Sect.

Countless demons had perished at the hands of the sect’s disciples. The Demon Empress, despite her immense power, was unwilling to face the Jade Empress.

Even the Sky Swallowing Python couldn’t guarantee victory against her.

For demons, the Two Polarities Sect was their greatest enemy, a foe they were sworn to destroy.

“Senior Sister!” Mu Zhi’an called out.

Lan Mulian glanced at him, her expression cold. Even without words, her message was clear: I am not your Senior Sister.

Her gaze shifted to the black-robed man, her voice icy. “A demon… at the foot of the Two Polarities Sect. You have some nerve.”

He stared at her, his eyes flickering with a mixture of fear and anger.

He backed away, his body dissolving into black smoke, attempting to escape.

Lan Mulian raised a hand, and a wave of pale light swept through the cave, forming a cage that trapped the smoke.

The light, seemingly harmless, burned the black-robed man, forcing him to struggle in vain against his confinement.

Severely injured, he was no match for Lan Mulian. He was at her mercy.

She ignored his futile struggles, her gaze passing over Bai Ruoxi before settling on Mu Zhi’an. A faint smile touched her lips.

“It seems I arrived just in time.”

She opened her hand, revealing a paper crane.

It was the crane Mu Zhi’an had released moments ago.

She had used it to track him down.

“Thank you, Senior Sister,” Mu Zhi’an said, bowing slightly.

If he hadn’t sent for her, he and Bai Ruoxi would have died here today.

Clinging to Senior Sister’s thigh was the right decision.

    Lan Mulian nodded curtly.

“What are you going to do with him?” Mu Zhi’an asked.

“He’s cunning. I can’t hold him for long,” she replied. “We need to deal with him quickly.”

The demon’s roars had ceased. He had either given up or passed out from exhaustion.

“Before you do… I’d like to have a little chat with him,” Mu Zhi’an said.

Lan Mulian glanced at him, then nodded. “I’ll keep him restrained.”

She opened a gap in the cage, allowing Mu Zhi’an to enter. She then looked at Bai Ruoxi.

The girl was staring back at her.

Their eyes met for a moment, then they both looked away.

The silence was awkward, heavy with unspoken tension.

Inside the cage, Mu Zhi’an approached the black-robed man, who seemed to have given up, his body slumped against the shimmering barrier.

Although he couldn’t see the demon’s face, he could sense his resignation, his utter defeat.

The demon had believed that Tianxuan City would be easy prey.

He had researched the city, its factions and key players, carefully selecting Mu Zhi’an, the notorious wastrel, as his target. Such men were easily manipulated.

He never imagined he would be outmaneuvered, humiliated by a mere junior.

“I underestimated you, Young Master Mu,” the black-robed man said, his voice a low growl.

“Your cunning is exactly what the Empress needs.”

Mu Zhi’an raised an eyebrow. “Are you trying to recruit me?”

The black-robed man looked up at him, his expression calm. “Join us. I’ll introduce you to the Seventh Seat. With your talent, you could become one of the Empress’s most trusted advisors.”

Mu Zhi’an walked over and sat down across from him, his movements leisurely, as if they were old friends catching up after a long separation.

“I have no interest in the Demon Realm. I’m human,” Mu Zhi’an replied.

The black-robed man scoffed. “Human? Are humans truly superior? You’re consumed by greed and ambition, your courts are riddled with corruption, and your people suffer from droughts, floods, and countless other disasters. Your government offers no solutions.”

“Your empire is rotting from within. If not for the Two Polarities Sect, the Empress would have conquered the Eastern Realm long ago.”

“Humans are no better than demons. Human hearts can be far more monstrous,” Mu Zhi’an agreed, shaking his head with a wry smile. “But I have no desire to abandon my home and travel to the Northern Realm. It’s too far. I’d miss Tianxuan City.”

“Besides, do you really think I’d trust you in this situation?”

    The black-robed man fell silent.

They were enemies, each plotting the other’s demise. A sudden offer of alliance… it was laughable.

“Honestly, I find it rather relaxing to chat with you,” Mu Zhi’an said suddenly.

The black-robed man stared at him, confused.

“Because you’re an idiot,” Mu Zhi’an explained.

The demon, confident in his strength, disdained cunning and deception. He was straightforward, expressing his desires openly. It was surprisingly refreshing to interact with such a simple, honest villain.

“That serpent, she wants the Heavenly Dao Aura?” Mu Zhi’an asked, changing the subject.

He was referring to the Demon Empress, the Sky Swallowing Python.

The black-robed man’s eyes narrowed dangerously at his disrespectful tone.

But seeing Mu Zhi’an’s calm demeanor, he forced himself to relax.

“You’ve eliminated Ye Yu and won over the beauty. What’s your next move, Young Master Mu? Will you kill Ye Yu? Or will you marry Bai Ruoxi?” he asked, also changing the subject.

He wouldn’t reveal anything about the Demon Realm.

Mu Zhi’an understood. He shook his head. “I won’t kill Ye Yu. And I have no plans to marry anytime soon.”

“You don’t want his life, and you don’t want the girl… What do you want?” the black-robed man asked, his gaze intense.

Mu Zhi’an met his gaze, a smile spreading across his lips.

    “I want you… dead.”

  • It turns out, they are the protagonists chapter 39

    Chapter 39: Bandit Suppression Concluded?

“The surprise is Core Formation cultivators eradicating evil, slaying the black-robed man, and restoring peace to Tianxuan City!” Gongsun Xiong declared, his voice booming through the air like thunder.

“You attacked the Bai family head, sabotaged their business, and even impersonated Gongsun family members to loot their homes, keeping the spoils for yourself! Demon, what do you have to say for yourself?!”

The black-robed man chuckled, unfazed by the accusations. “Isn’t looting your family’s specialty? Trying to shift the blame now, are we?”

“The Gongsun family has never engaged in such despicable acts. Everything was orchestrated by you, the black-robed man.”

Gongsun Xiong stood in the air, his hands clasped behind his back, his gaze cold and unwavering as he looked down at the demon.

Beside him, a Gongsun family retainer echoed his sentiment with a similarly icy expression.

The elderly retainer from the Morning Glory Chamber of Commerce, Old Tian, spoke in a measured tone. “Since the Chamber of Commerce has hired me, I suppose I should contribute at least a little.”

Ye Yu, trapped within the cocoon, finally understood what was happening. He roared in fury and humiliation.

    “Mu Zhi’an, you tricked me!”

    He felt like a fool.

Mu Zhi’an had never considered him a true opponent. Their duel had been nothing more than a trivial appetizer before the main course.

From the very beginning, Mu Zhi’an hadn’t taken him seriously.

He hadn’t even cared about winning or losing.

He was a pragmatist, his sole focus on achieving his goals. And his goal had always been the black-robed man.

    *Boom!*

The three Core Formation experts descended like lightning, their attacks converging on the black-robed man. Wei Mengrou, a blur of motion, joined the fray.

Gongsun Xiong unleashed a wave of invisible heat, enveloping the demon, slowing his movements.

However, the black-robed man was experienced in group battles. He targeted Gongsun Xiong, launching himself into the air, a black chain shooting from his sleeve.

The chain wrapped around Gongsun Xiong, draining his spiritual energy!

Gongsun Xiong struggled against the chain, roaring, “If you don’t help now, we’ll all die here!”

Old Tian, seizing the opportunity, struck the black-robed man with a powerful blow, sending him crashing to the ground.

The chain binding Gongsun Xiong loosened its grip.

Gongsun Xiong glared at the demon, his eyes filled with rage. He unleashed another wave of heat, scorching the earth.

The black-robed man, pinned beneath the intense heat, cried out in pain, his grip loosening. The jade bottle containing the Heavenly Dao Aura slipped from his grasp, flying into the nearby undergrowth.

Wei Mengrou channeled her spiritual energy, her sword humming as it shot towards the black-robed man’s chest, aiming for a fatal blow.

But the other demon, locked in combat with Elder Ren, unleashed a powerful blast of energy, deflecting her attack at the last moment. The sword plunged into the ground.

Gongsun Xiong, panting heavily, swallowed a pill to replenish his spiritual energy, his gaze fixed on the black-robed man.

That chain could drain spiritual energy. It was a troublesome ability.

And he hadn’t lost much energy, yet he felt utterly drained.

Could it be those nights with Bai Yuanfeng?

The black-robed man, battered but alive, pulled himself out of the crater.

Demons were known for their resilience. Even surrounded by four Core Formation experts, he was still fighting.

He dusted himself off and glanced at Mu Zhi’an, a cruel smile twisting his lips. “You’ve certainly given me a surprise, Young Master Mu.”

Despite being outnumbered and outmatched, he seemed unfazed, his eyes filled with confidence.

The others sensed something was amiss. Mu Zhi’an frowned, his gaze fixed on the demon.

“You’re probably wondering about my confidence. The Heavenly Dao Aura doesn’t just accelerate cultivation. If refined, it can temporarily boost one’s cultivation by an entire realm!”

He laughed, his voice filled with triumph. “And only those with great destiny can gain the aura’s recognition. And I… I am the one with the greatest destiny!”

He raised his hand, his voice booming through the forest. “Rise!”

The jade bottle flew towards him.

It was a beautifully crafted bottle, its surface adorned with intricate formations.

He had prepared this bottle long ago, specifically to contain the Heavenly Dao Aura.

And now, its seal was broken.

A sphere of milky white light emerged from the bottle, hovering in the air.

Mu Zhi’an’s eyes narrowed. “Don’t let him absorb it!”

    *Boom!*

Ye Yu, empowered by the old man within him, finally broke free from the cocoon. His gaze fell upon the Heavenly Dao Aura, and a look of urgency crossed his face. He reached out. “Return to me!”

However, the aura remained motionless, hovering in the air.

The black-robed man chuckled coldly. “I told you, the aura chooses the one with the greatest destiny. You were simply lucky to possess it for a time. But your destiny… it pales in comparison to mine.”

Ye Yu, unable to believe his ears, glared at the demon. His cultivation surged, boosted by the old man’s power, reaching Core Formation!

    He lunged towards the aura.

The black-robed man snorted, his chain shooting out to intercept him.

The Heavenly Dao Aura, such a treasure. Gongsun Xiong’s eyes gleamed with greed. He reached for the aura.

Old Tian blocked his path, smiling. “Patience, Brother Gongsun. The aura is indeed a treasure, but only those with great destiny can claim it. Don’t be hasty.”

Gongsun Xiong glared at him. “Step aside.”

Old Tian stood his ground, his smile unwavering. “Let’s deal with the enemy first. We can decide who gets the aura later.”

“Infighting is exactly what he wants.”

Gongsun Xiong hesitated, then nodded. “Fine.”

He knew they had to stop the black-robed man from absorbing the aura. Who knew how powerful he would become?

The three experts attacked the demon, forcing him to abandon his pursuit of the aura. He couldn’t afford to be distracted; Wei Mengrou was still lurking, waiting for an opportunity to strike.

But then, Ye Yu shot into the air, aiming for the Heavenly Dao Aura.

The three experts, momentarily distracted, turned to see Ye Yu attempting to seize the aura.

“That fool!” Gongsun Xiong cursed, breaking away from the fight to intercept him.

They were risking their lives to deal with the black-robed man, and Ye Yu was trying to steal the aura? Did he think they were idiots?

“Ye Yu, stand down!” he roared.

Ye Yu met his gaze, his expression calm. “This belongs to me. Please step aside, Senior.”

Gongsun Xiong scoffed. “If it truly belongs to you, why has it abandoned you?”

Ye Yu hesitated, his expression hardening. “That demon must have done something! The aura chose me long ago!”

The black-robed man laughed, his voice filled with malice. “You fool! No one can force the Heavenly Dao Aura to submit! It chooses the one with the greatest destiny! It simply doesn’t recognize you anymore!”

He was delighted by their infighting. It gave him an opportunity to escape.

The lure of the aura was too strong. They were all holding back, hoping to conserve their strength for the inevitable struggle to claim it.

Ye Yu’s voice turned cold. “If you won’t move, Senior, then I’ll have to force my way through!”

His demeanor shifted, a chilling aura emanating from him.

    Gongsun Xiong’s eyes narrowed.

There’s another soul within him. And it’s in control now.

    “Who are you?!” he demanded.

But Ye Yu didn’t answer. He lunged towards the aura.

Gongsun Xiong blocked his path, his flying sword slashing through the air.

Ye Yu raised a hand, deflecting the attack. He spoke, his voice ancient and weary.

“To think a mere Core Formation cultivator would dare challenge me… How bold.”

His youthful face was a stark contrast to his world-weary eyes.

Gongsun Xiong scoffed. “No matter how powerful you were in the past, you’re nothing but a remnant now.”

“You might have reached Core Formation by possessing Ye Yu, but how long can you maintain it?”

Ye Yu glanced at him, his expression indifferent. “We’ll see.”

The black-robed man’s chain targeted the soul, which was why he couldn’t fight back. But against other cultivators, he was still a formidable opponent.

He raised his hand, a ball of fire igniting in his palm.

Gongsun Xiong’s eyes narrowed. He channeled his spiritual energy, preparing for a fierce clash.

    *Whoosh!*

Ye Yu launched the fireball, sending it hurtling towards Gongsun Xiong.

A deafening explosion rocked the forest.

Mu Zhi’an watched the chaotic scene unfold, his brow furrowing for the first time.

If not for Ye Yu, they would have dealt with the black-robed man by now.

Four Core Formation experts… even a demon wouldn’t survive such an onslaught.

But Ye Yu’s interference and the allure of the Heavenly Dao Aura had complicated matters.

However, the situation wasn’t out of control yet.

Mu Zhi’an glanced at the aura, then towards the horizon.

    He was waiting for someone.

If all went well, she would arrive soon.

Bai Ruoxi tugged at his sleeve, her voice hesitant as she spoke through a mental transmission. “Young Master Mu… the Heavenly Dao Aura… it’s reacting to me.”

Mu Zhi’an stared at her, surprised. “Are you sure?”

She nodded. To prove her point, she raised a finger, and the aura drifted towards her.

Mu Zhi’an stared at her, speechless.

Could she be the one with the greatest destiny?

But if that’s the case, why did the aura choose Ye Yu before?

His gaze fell upon her ample bosom.

A bronze pendant rested there, gleaming in the sunlight.

Could it be because of the merged shard? Did it alter her destiny?

He looked at the black-robed man, who was struggling against the three Core Formation experts, then at the other demon, who was also losing ground against Wei Mengrou and Elder Ren.

He made a decision. “How far away can you attract the aura?” he whispered.

Bai Ruoxi closed her eyes, focusing her senses. After a moment, she opened her eyes. “Fifty miles should be no problem.”

    “That’s enough.”

He nodded, taking her hand. “Come with me.”

He pulled her into the depths of the Dragon Head Forest.

As they vanished into the trees, the Heavenly Dao Aura flickered uncertainly, as if contemplating escape.

The black-robed man noticed its movement and stared at it in disbelief, about to intervene.

But the three experts pressed their attack, forcing him to focus on defense.

After a while, a scream echoed through the forest. The black-robed man turned to see his companion lying on the ground, Wei Mengrou’s sword piercing his heart.

She panted heavily, her eyes cold and emotionless as she withdrew her blade, wiping the blood on the ground.

“You should be paying attention!” Old Tian roared, seizing the opportunity. He punched the black-robed man, sending him crashing to the earth.

The black-robed man coughed up blood, glaring at them with venomous hatred.

Then, he dissolved into black smoke, vanishing from sight.

However, they didn’t notice the black viper that emerged from the smoke, its eyes fixed on them with chilling malice. It slithered away, disappearing into a crevice in the ground.

The “bandit suppression” operation was over. Both black-robed men had been defeated.

Demons were truly formidable opponents. Even with their combined strength, they had sustained minor injuries, and their spiritual energy was depleted.

Then, the Gongsun family retainer noticed something was amiss. He scanned the sky, his voice filled with alarm. “The Heavenly Dao Aura… it’s gone!”

Ye Yu and Gongsun Xiong, still locked in combat, paused, turning to look around.

Their expressions turned to shock and disbelief.

The Heavenly Dao Aura, which had been hovering in the air moments ago, had vanished.

  • It turns out, they are the protagonists chapter 38

Chapter 38: Explain This “Surprise,” You Bastard!

As Mu Zhi’an spoke, a flicker of fear crossed the black-robed man’s heart.

His gaze fell upon the old man who had silently appeared behind Mu Zhi’an. He hesitated for a moment, then his unease vanished, replaced by a cold smirk. “Is *this* your so-called surprise?”

It was Elder Ren, the Mu family’s retainer.

This was a card the Mu family had played openly, a card he was already aware of.

And he had a counter for this card.

A Core Formation cultivator was indeed troublesome.

    But not insurmountable.

Especially for someone who had come prepared.

The black-robed man regained his composure, his eyes fixed on Mu Zhi’an, a chilling glint in their depths. “To think the Mu family’s retainer would personally escort you to the Dragon Head Forest… You don’t trust me very much, do you, Young Master Mu?”

Mu Zhi’an looked at him as if he were a madman. “Would *you* trust a stranger who refuses to even reveal his name?”

The black-robed man was momentarily speechless, then he burst into laughter. “You’re right! Hahaha! I’ve been underestimating you, Young Master Mu. Even a wastrel can devise a cunning plan.”

“I went through all that trouble to help you win over Miss Bai… and this is how you repay me?”

“I pursued her. I put in the effort. How is that *your* accomplishment?” Mu Zhi’an retorted, his voice laced with amusement.

“Who the hell do you think you are?”

The black-robed man’s eyes narrowed, a murderous glint in their depths. He slowly raised his hand. “It seems you’re not satisfied with the gift I gave you, Young Master Mu.”

As he spoke, a wave of killing intent washed over Mu Zhi’an. He felt a chill run down his spine.

The black-robed man’s figure flickered, and another figure emerged from behind him, also clad in black robes.

Unlike the man with the wide-brimmed hat, this one’s face was exposed. His features were sharp and angular, his eyes cold and reptilian, their vertical pupils like those of a venomous snake. His aura was chilling, predatory.

    “A demon?!” Bai Ruoxi gasped.

The aura emanating from him was unmistakable, the signature coldness of a demonic cultivator.

Demons were one of the most powerful factions in this world. The Two Polarities Sect was located in the Eastern Realm, while the Demon Realm lay far to the north. Conflicts between the two factions were frequent.

But Tianxuan City was practically at the foot of the Two Polarities Sect!

To think a demon had infiltrated this far.

It seemed the Demon Emperor had ambitious plans.

The Northern Realm was entirely under demonic control. It was a lawless land, ruled by the Demon Empress, said to be an ancient Sky Swallowing Python, a white snake of immense power and seductive charm. Countless demons, rogue cultivators, and other nefarious beings had pledged their allegiance to her, becoming her loyal servants.

Her power wasn’t solely based on her strength; it was also rooted in her alluring charm, her ability to ensnare hearts and minds.

No wonder something felt off. He’s a demon… Mu Zhi’an thought, surprised.

The black-robed man had been hiding his true nature.

There had been two of them all along.

    That explained his confidence.

Two Core Formation demons. Even if Elder Ren could handle one, the other would wreak havoc.

Demons possessed naturally potent spiritual energy. Due to their bloodline, they were formidable opponents, often surpassing human cultivators of the same realm. And aside from Elder Ren, there was only Mu Zhi’an and Bai Ruoxi.

Two Foundation Establishment cultivators were no match for a Core Formation demon.

“You didn’t seem too surprised earlier, Young Master Mu. How about now? Is this surprising enough?” the black-robed man asked, a cruel smirk twisting his lips.

His gaze was cold, predatory, like a cat toying with its prey.

It was true, even a powerful family rarely had more than two or three Core Formation experts.

These two Core Formation demons were practically invincible in this situation.

His gaze lingered on Bai Ruoxi, a hint of greed in his eyes.

He had no interest in humans, but this girl possessed an abundance of spiritual energy. If he refined her into a cauldron, it would greatly enhance his power.

    As for Mu Zhi’an.

He would make that arrogant brat suffer.

To think he, a Core Formation expert, had been tricked by a mere Foundation Establishment cultivator! It had been a humiliating experience, forcing him to abandon his black robes and hide his face in shame.

    He would have his revenge.

“Two Core Formation demons. I’m impressed,” Mu Zhi’an said, his voice filled with mock admiration.

However, the fear he’d been feigning vanished, replaced by his usual calm demeanor.

    The black-robed man frowned.

He felt a strange unease, a prickling sensation at the back of his neck.

He had imagined Mu Zhi’an’s reaction upon discovering his true strength… He’d expected terror, panic, perhaps even a desperate attempt to flee.

That was how others had reacted. He would give them a glimmer of hope, make them believe they could escape, then crush their spirits at the last moment, reveling in their despair.

He’d wanted to see that same fear in Mu Zhi’an’s eyes, but the young man’s calmness was unnerving.

Something’s not right. He’s just a third-level Foundation Establishment cultivator. Why isn’t he afraid?

The black-robed man’s eyes narrowed suspiciously.

In that instant, the demon beside him lunged at Mu Zhi’an, striking out with his palm.

Elder Ren snorted, meeting the attack with his own palm strike. A shockwave rippled outward, forcing them apart.

The demon unleashed a wave of demonic energy, engulfing Elder Ren. A fierce battle erupted.

The black-robed man continued to face Mu Zhi’an, who still showed no signs of fleeing. He felt a flicker of fear, an urge to retreat.

Retrieving the Heavenly Dao Aura and returning to the Demon Empress was his top priority. Failure was not an option.

He hesitated, then struck out at Mu Zhi’an with his withered hand.

    *Clang!*

A clear, resonant hum echoed through the air. He stared in disbelief as an ancient bronze sword, its surface adorned with intricate patterns, materialized behind the Bai family’s young mistress.

An oppressive aura radiated from the sword, a sense of ancient power that made his heart pound.

    This sword, it’s not ordinary.

He glared at Bai Ruoxi, his fear and anger masked by a calm facade. “So this is your trump card, Young Master Mu?” he asked, his voice dripping with sarcasm.

    “Hiding behind a woman…”

Mu Zhi’an chuckled, unfazed by his taunts. “At least I have a woman to rely on. What about you?”

“Oh, you don’t have a Dao Companion? Never mind then.” His words struck a nerve.

The black-robed man roared in fury, launching another attack.

But Bai Ruoxi’s sword blocked the blow, its surface glowing with a faint light, forming a protective barrier.

He’s acting like a scorned lover… Mu Zhi’an thought, amused. “Don’t get your robes in a twist. I haven’t unveiled my gift yet.”

The black-robed man, staring at the smiling young man, felt a growing sense of unease. He turned and shot into the air, attempting to escape.

A booming voice echoed from above, shaking the very trees. “You think you can come and go as you please? Do you take Tianxuan City for a playground?!”

The black-robed man looked up, his eyes widening in horror as three figures descended from the sky, their swords gleaming in the sunlight.

It was two Core Formation experts from the Gongsun family and another from the Morning Glory Chamber of Commerce!

He spun around, desperately seeking an escape route.

But as he turned, he saw the girl in the pale yellow gown standing calmly in his path, her hand resting on the hilt of her sword, her eyes cold and indifferent.

    Another Core Formation expert?!

He felt as if the entire world had turned against him. He glared at Mu Zhi’an, his voice a venomous hiss. “You tricked me!”

For a junior member of the Mu family to secretly unite the three great families, it was unthinkable.

“I wouldn’t call it a trick. To use your own words, this is a surprise.”

Mu Zhi’an’s voice was calm, but his eyes gleamed with a dangerous light. “Now, explain this to me—”

“What exactly is your definition of a surprise?”

  • It turns out, they are the protagonists chapter 37

Chapter 37: The Times Have Changed, My Lord!

    Dragon Head Forest.

This vast expanse of ancient trees lay west of Tianxuan City. When viewed from above, the forest resembled a dragon’s head, its maw agape, ready to devour the unwary. Within its depths, countless monstrous beasts roamed, making it a perilous place for ordinary mortals.

Despite the dangers, cultivators often ventured into the forest, seeking rare ingredients and honing their skills against the formidable beasts. Many, however, never returned.

Ye Yu, dressed in dark robes, stood at the forest’s entrance, his gaze fixed on the approaching carriage.

He recognized the Mu family crest emblazoned on its side.

    They’re finally here.

He took a deep breath, his eyes burning with anticipation and a thirst for revenge.

He had waited for this day, enduring sleepless nights, dedicating every waking moment to cultivation, all to close the gap between him and Mu Zhi’an.

    He would avenge his humiliation!

While he wasn’t entirely confident, he knew Mu Zhi’an wasn’t a typical Foundation Establishment cultivator. Years of indulgence had weakened him. If Ye Yu remained calm and calculated, victory was within reach.

He looked up as the carriage drew closer.

A handsome young man stepped out.

His dark hair and slender frame gave him a gentle, almost delicate appearance.

However, it was all a facade.

Mu Zhi’an was nothing more than a wastrel, obsessed with women.

No matter how well he disguised himself, the truth remained.

Stay calm, defeat him, and crush him.

Just as Ye Yu was about to speak, he saw Mu Zhi’an walk around the carriage and extend his hand.

A slender, pale hand emerged from within, resting gently in his. Then, a beautiful woman stepped out, her white boots peeking out from beneath her knee-length skirt, revealing long, slender legs.

Her profile was exquisite, her features delicate and flawless, framed by strands of hair that caressed her cheeks. Her captivating peach blossom eyes were legendary in Tianxuan City, capable of bewitching even the most jaded hearts.

She was Bai Ruoxi, the woman who had once haunted the dreams of countless young men.

She glanced at Ye Yu, her expression indifferent, then turned away.

Her dismissive attitude stung him deeply. She had never shown him any kindness, but she had treated Mu Zhi’an with the same coldness in the past. Now, she seemed completely devoted to him, allowing him to hold her hand as if they were lovers.

Ye Yu clenched his fists, his nails digging into his palms. He struggled to contain his rage.

“Mu Zhi’an!” he roared, his voice trembling with fury.

    He’s agitated… Mu Zhi’an noted, but he didn’t react.

He instructed Bai Ruoxi to wait by the carriage, then walked towards Ye Yu, his eyes studying the young man’s tense expression.

The truth was, Mu Zhi’an had been waiting for this day as well.

Once he dealt with the “protagonist,” the accursed word “Supporting Character” in his status window would finally disappear.

However, unlike Ye Yu, he wasn’t consumed by impatience.

He had accepted his fate. If the “protagonist’s” talent and destiny were truly insurmountable, he would simply lie down and accept defeat.

He would enjoy life, indulge in every pleasure, and make the most of his time in this world.

But if he won, that would be even better.

If he defeated Ye Yu and shed the label of “Supporting Character,” he would become the new “protagonist.”

He would utilize the Mu family’s vast resources to reach the peak of cultivation, then join the Two Polarities Sect. Perhaps he might even achieve immortality, becoming a legend in his own right.

Of course, first he had to deal with the “protagonist” standing before him.

“You’re early,” Mu Zhi’an said with a smile.

Ye Yu glared at him, his expression cold and unyielding.

Mu Zhi’an, amused by his seriousness, continued, “Ruoxi and I were chatting last night. Time flew by.”

Ye Yu’s face darkened. “A shallow woman and a spoiled brat, what do I care about their idle chatter?”

Mu Zhi’an chuckled. “She simply doesn’t like you, Young Master Ye. Why call her shallow?”

“Do you expect every woman to fawn over you?”

“Enough with the pretense, Mu Zhi’an! You know exactly why she chose you!” Ye Yu snapped.

Mu Zhi’an shook his head, his smile widening. “You claim she humiliated you by breaking off the engagement, but it was arranged by your elders. She had no choice in the matter. And now, after she rejects your advances, you accuse her of being shallow?”

He continued, “And have you forgotten how she treated me in the past, Young Master Ye?”

The Chosen One, blessed with great destiny, seemed oblivious to his own flaws. In his mind, breaking off the engagement was an unforgivable offense. Bai Ruoxi should have dutifully accepted her fate as his wife.

And she shouldn’t have treated him with such coldness.

Ultimately, Ye Yu viewed Bai Ruoxi as his possession, something that rightfully belonged to him. He believed the world revolved around him.

He never stopped to consider why she might reject him.

“Young Master Ye, if you defeat me today, who do you think Ruoxi will choose?” Mu Zhi’an asked, his words a sharp jab at Ye Yu’s already wounded pride.

Ye Yu snapped. He lunged forward, his speed comparable to a second-level Foundation Establishment cultivator.

If Mu Zhi’an hadn’t absorbed the energy from tens of thousands of Spirit Stones last night, he would have struggled to react.

He pushed out with his palm, sending a wave of energy towards Ye Yu.

    “Third level of Foundation Establishment?!”

Ye Yu’s eyes widened in surprise, but his pace didn’t falter. He pushed his speed to the limit, summoning his heavy sword with a flick of his wrist.

    *Clang!*

The sword flew towards Mu Zhi’an, who barely managed to block the attack with his own weapon.

A shockwave rippled outward as their blades clashed.

Mu Zhi’an’s advantage in cultivation was evident. He channeled his spiritual energy, transforming it into a barrage of blades that hurtled towards Ye Yu.

Ye Yu’s expression changed. He activated the Heavenly Dao Aura within him, a faint barrier appearing around his body. The energy blades dissipated harmlessly upon contact.

Mu Zhi’an pressed his attack, refusing to give Ye Yu a chance to recover.

But Ye Yu was incredibly fast. He dodged each strike with uncanny agility, moving like a phantom.

Despite his superior cultivation, Mu Zhi’an was starting to tire. His relentless attacks were draining his energy.

Ye Yu was also pale, sweat beading on his forehead. He panted heavily, staring at Mu Zhi’an. “So this is the power of a Foundation Establishment cultivator… Disappointing.”

He shook his head, a smirk twisting his lips. “You’re just weak, Mu Zhi’an. Years of indulgence have taken their toll. A true Foundation Establishment cultivator wouldn’t be so easily exhausted.”

His condescending tone and mocking smile would have enraged any other man.

However, Mu Zhi’an merely chuckled. “You’re right. My past indulgences have hindered my performance.”

“And spending the entire night with Ruoxi… well, it took a lot out of me.”

Ye Yu’s eyes widened, his composure shattering.

The spiritual energy that had nearly been depleted surged back into his body. Mu Zhi’an watched in astonishment as he swallowed a pill.

Ye Yu raised his head, his face regaining some of its color.

“You forgot, Young Master Mu… I’m also an alchemist!”

In addition to cultivating, he had also been preparing various pills and medicines, specifically for this duel.

He lunged at Mu Zhi’an, his sword flashing through the air, a murderous intent burning in his eyes.

Against an enemy, showing mercy was a recipe for disaster.

    He would kill Mu Zhi’an!

Bai Ruoxi, witnessing his murderous intent, clenched her fists, her gaze fixed on Mu Zhi’an.

Spiritual energy surged through her body, her white skirt billowing in the wind.

Mu Zhi’an was exhausted. If she didn’t intervene, he might die.

But then, she noticed something strange.

Mu Zhi’an’s depleted spiritual energy was also recovering, and at a much faster rate than Ye Yu’s.

He deflected Ye Yu’s attack, sending both swords clattering to the ground. He then punched Ye Yu in the stomach, sending him flying backwards.

Ye Yu crashed into a tree, coughing up blood. He looked up at Mu Zhi’an, disbelief etched on his face, just as Mu Zhi’an opened his mouth.

He was holding a Revitalizing Pill.

“When did you get the idea that you were the only one with recovery pills, Young Master Ye?” Mu Zhi’an asked, his voice calm and steady.

    A Revitalizing Pill?!

Ye Yu stared at him, his eyes wide with shock and disbelief.

As an alchemist, he knew the value of such a pill. The Mu family shouldn’t have been able to acquire the King Beast Vine… but that was clearly a Revitalizing Pill!

Bai Ruoxi rushed to Mu Zhi’an’s side, her voice filled with concern. “Are you alright?”

He shook his head. “Just a little lucky. I’m fine.”

He glanced at Bai Ruoxi, his gaze lingering on her beautiful face.

    A thought struck him.

If he hadn’t stopped Ye Yu from buying that bronze shard at the auction… would Ye Yu be wielding that powerful sword now?

Based on his deductions, the sword was most likely an heirloom of the Bai family.

However, Ye Yu was the Chosen One. And judging by his eagerness to acquire the shard, he might have been able to activate its power as well.

If that were the case, Ye Yu would be standing here, not him.

Even with only one shard, the sword possessed the power of a peak Foundation Establishment cultivator. With both shards combined, its destructive force rivaled that of a Core Formation expert.

    Wasn’t that a classic “protagonist” power-up?

Thank goodness I’m a whale… No matter how lucky Ye Yu might be, as long as I have money, I can outbid him every time…

Mu Zhi’an watched as Ye Yu struggled to his feet, swallowing several pills.

Bai Ruoxi frowned. “Enough, Ye Yu. There’s no need for this. You’re not mortal enemies. The duel is over.”

    “Over?”

A cold smile spread across Ye Yu’s face. His eyes gleamed with a strange light.

During his clash with Mu Zhi’an, the old man residing within him had awakened. If he unleashed the old man’s power, even Mu Zhi’an and Bai Ruoxi combined wouldn’t stand a chance.

Despite his injuries, the old man was still a Core Formation expert!

“I’m counting on you, Master,” Ye Yu whispered inwardly.

The old man’s voice echoed in his mind, a hint of amusement in his tone. “If I intervene, I can’t guarantee the boy’s safety. Are you sure about this?”

Ye Yu nodded, his expression resolute.

In that instant, an overwhelming surge of spiritual energy erupted from his body, its pressure so intense that the beasts in the forest howled in terror, and birds scattered in panic.

Bai Ruoxi frowned. “Be careful, Mu Zhi’an. Something’s wrong.”

He chuckled. “Of course something’s wrong. It’d be strange if there wasn’t.”

He was the Chosen One, after all. What kind of “protagonist” didn’t have a cheat or a hidden power?

However, when the supporting character had a brain, things wouldn’t always go according to the script.

Mu Zhi’an looked at Ye Yu, his smile widening. “Someone else is in control now, I see.”

Ye Yu spoke, his voice devoid of emotion. “Consider this another one of my tricks, Young Master Mu. Don’t blame me.”

As long as he defeated Mu Zhi’an, any method was justified.

Mu Zhi’an nodded, feigning agreement. “You’re right. The result is all that matters. Victory is everything.”

“Whether you cheat or not, it’s irrelevant.”

As Ye Yu approached, his expression cold and menacing, Mu Zhi’an’s tone shifted, a hint of amusement in his voice. “But have you… considered one thing, Young Master Ye?”

Ye Yu paused, his brow furrowing. A sense of unease crept into his heart.

He glared at Mu Zhi’an, his killing intent intensifying. He lunged forward, reaching for him with his hand.

Mu Zhi’an stood his ground, his expression calm. “Why do you assume that your enemies will always be at the same level as you?”

“The times have changed, Young Master Ye.”

Just as he finished speaking, a wave of oppressive energy descended from the sky. Ye Yu looked up, his eyes widening in horror as a figure in a wide-brimmed hat landed before him, a chain flying through the air.

Before he could react, the chain wrapped around him, binding him tightly.

A dark light enveloped him, forming a cocoon.

Then, a sphere of milky white light emerged from the cocoon.

    The Heavenly Dao Aura!

“My Heavenly Dao Aura… Who are you?! Who are you?!” Ye Yu’s voice echoed from within the cocoon, filled with terror and disbelief. He couldn’t comprehend what was happening. The aura had chosen him, yet it was leaving his body…

    “Your Heavenly Dao Aura?”

The black-robed man chuckled coldly. “A slightly above-average destiny, and you think you’re worthy of the Heavenly Dao Aura?”

“The aura chooses the one with the greatest destiny. Your destiny might be impressive in Tianxuan City, but that’s all it is.”

He reached out, his pale hand grasping for the sphere of light.

“I am the one who deserves the Heavenly Dao Aura.”

His voice was calm, as if stating a simple fact.

The aura pulsed with a faint light as he touched it, as if resisting his grasp.

However, the black-robed man was prepared. He retrieved a jade bottle and absorbed the aura within.

It all happened in the blink of an eye. Bai Ruoxi stared at the scene before her, speechless with shock.

The black-robed man turned to Mu Zhi’an, a cruel smile twisting his lips. “Thank you for your cooperation, Young Master Mu.”

Despite his pallor, Mu Zhi’an smiled pleasantly. “This was the agreed-upon payment. There’s no need for thanks.”

The black-robed man nodded. “You are indeed a man of your word, Young Master Mu.”

He paused, his smile turning predatory. “Therefore, I’ve decided to give you a little gift.”

    “Oh?”

Mu Zhi’an feigned surprise. “A gift? What kind of gift?”

“Let’s just say rumors will spread that Mu Zhi’an lured Ye Yu to the Dragon Head Forest for a duel, then murdered him in cold blood for Bai Ruoxi. And after taking advantage of the Bai family’s young mistress, he was tragically killed by a horde of beasts.”

The black-robed man’s voice was a chilling whisper.

“…You’re going to frame me?!” Mu Zhi’an gasped, feigning fear and outrage.

The black-robed man chuckled, about to speak, when Mu Zhi’an interrupted him.

“How about I give you a gift as well?”
