    Chapter 33

Xiao Xiao’s cheeks felt a little hot being stared at by Wei Jie’s unrestrained gaze. She couldn’t help but ask, “Why are you looking at me like that?”

Wei Jie was not flustered even after being caught. He leisurely squatted on the cart board of the horse cart, then deliberately leaned closer and said, “Master, your face… is dirty. Do you want me to wipe it for you?”

Hmm, this shameless sophistry when caught peeping was indeed Xiao Xiao’s genuine teaching. The unfilial disciple learned it very well.

Xiao Xiao was dumbfounded by his retort and could only fiercely stuff a sour fruit into his laughing mouth to see if she could block his words!

Yu Ling’er stretched her neck from the back of the cart and saw this playful banter between the master and disciple. She felt that Xiao Xiao was too frivolous as a master!

She snorted disdainfully again, then took out the jade pendant she had in her bosom, pressed it tightly against her face, looked at the floating clouds in the sky, and continued to silently lament.

This was the love token that Young Pavilion Master Qin gave her. She just didn’t know when she could get rid of this vulgar Talisman Sect and go to Soaring Cloud Pavilion to find him…

With the help of the horse cart, the group finally arrived at their destination.

Luoyi City was the territory of Prince Can, the emperor’s most favored younger brother, and it was also an important route connecting the north and south. Every day when the city gate opened, there was an endless stream of traffic.

However, when they were near a grove by the city gate, they found a pair of identical girls standing by the road, staring straight at Wei Jie.

Xiao Xiao recognized that these twins were the two daughters of the Wei family head and also Wei Jie’s cousins.

It turned out that the two girls came to deliver a family letter to Wei Jie.

It seemed that the old matriarch of the Wei family had always been uneasy about her grandson, so she asked her two granddaughters to send some things to Wei Jie.

As for how they knew Wei Jie was here, there was some trick to it. It was said that the matriarch of the Wei family divined and found out that they would come to Luoyi City.

So the two girls had arrived early, but they didn’t expect Wei Jie and the others to come so late.

In addition to the family letter, the old matriarch also asked the two granddaughters to bring Wei Jie a whip and a small box.

This whip was the one Wei Jie originally used to tie up the corpse-eating beast. Now the body of the whip seemed to have silver threads added to it, and the whip body flashed with silver light under the sunlight.

On the long handle of the whip, the demon-subduing talisman seal of the Wei family was inlaid.

The originally ordinary whip was no longer simple with this talisman seal blessing. It had the blessing of the Wei family ancestors.

However, to have such a demon-subduing talisman seal, one had to be a disciple of the Wei family who had passed the trial.

Like Wei Jie, who had left home early and privately changed his surname, he shouldn’t have such qualifications.

But for some reason, the person in charge of the Wei family changed his mind and sent such a blessed whip to Wei Jie.

The elder sister of the twins opened her mouth to explain, “Grandmother said that Cousin, you were able to catch the corpse-eating beast, which is equivalent to passing the Wei family’s trial of subduing demons and eliminating monsters. Of course, you can get the talisman seal blessing.”

But Wei Jie obviously didn’t want to be acknowledged by the Wei family. He frowned and looked at the whip, hesitating to take it.

Seeing this, Xiao Xiao pinched Wei Jie’s waist and then smiled at Wei Jie and whispered in his ear, “Jie’er, be good. If you don’t accept it, your grandmother will definitely suspect that I, your master, instigated you to be estranged from your grandmother. It’s fine to accept a coffin nail, but don’t let your grandmother get angry and send another one…”

What a joke, if he didn’t accept it, wouldn’t the Wei family suspect her, this master possessed by the Demon Bead?

The coffin nail that the Wei family matriarch gave to Wei Jie to nail her to death in the future was still in the big wooden box used for luggage in the horse cart!

Besides, how could he refuse the kind intention of the elder? If he didn’t like this whip, he could just not use it in the future!

Wei Jie looked down at Xiao Xiao, who was winking and making faces, thought silently for a while, and finally stopped being stubborn and took the whip.

As for that box, it seemed to contain a letter personally written by the Wei family matriarch.

Xiao Xiao didn’t like to pry into other people’s family privacy. Seeing that Wei Jie didn’t have a falling out with his cousins, she tactfully walked away.

After finishing the tasks entrusted by the grandmother, the twin sisters got on their horses and left.

Wei Jie stood alone in the woods. After reading the letter, it took a long time before he came out of the woods.

Xiao Xiao found that his face didn’t look very good, so she asked him in a low voice, “What’s wrong?”

Wei Jie put away the letter as if nothing had happened, then said in a deep voice, “It’s nothing… Let’s enter the city.”

But when entering the city, everyone else had gone in, but he still stood at the city gate in a daze.

Xiao Xiao looked back at him and was also silent for a moment. Although she wasn’t clear what he was hesitating about at this time, she knew that this city was really a bit… too heavy for Wei Jie’s future.

She even got distracted for a moment and thought that if he changed his mind at the last minute and didn’t want to enter the city… then forget it…

But while she was in a daze, Wei Jie had already walked to her side and very naturally pushed her slender shoulders and said, “Let’s go, let’s enter the city!”

After entering the city, the little fox Yu Ling’er, who had almost never left the mountain, couldn’t stop looking around. She pulled Tang Youshu to look east and west, wanting to buy whatever she saw.

However, Xiao Xiao and Wei Jie seemed to have lost interest and had no intention of shopping. Wei Jie found a teahouse and took the injured-armed Xiao Xiao to have a few cups of tea.

When Yu Ling’er excitedly came back with a pile of copper pots and tangram puzzles, Xiao Xiao and Wei Jie had also eaten a plate of cakes in the teahouse.

When drinking tea just now, Xiao Xiao found that Wei Jie had rarely become very quiet, drinking tea and being absent-minded.

She guessed that his unusual behavior should be related to the letter sent by the Wei family, but when she tried to ask about it, he came back to his senses and casually talked about the cakes, changing the topic.

In Wei Jie’s previous trajectory, he didn’t return to the Wei family for a meal, let alone help his uncle Wei Jingfeng catch the corpse-eating beast.

At that time, because he had stolen the Golden Core of the Four Great Sects, his reputation was ruined, and he had no connection with the Wei family.

Although it was the grandmother who ordered the twin sisters to send the letter this time, if Father Wei Jingfeng didn’t nod, the twin sisters probably wouldn’t dare to come.

It could be seen that this time, Wei Jie’s relationship with the head of the Wei family had inexplicably eased a lot.

Xiao Xiao didn’t know what the letter said that made him so mentally absent, but it seemed that Wei Jie didn’t intend to tell her.

At this moment, the two who went shopping came back. As soon as Tang Youshu came in carrying big and small bags, Wei Jie signaled his disciple to go settle the tea bill.

Tang Youshu rummaged through his cloth pocket and said to his master in a low voice, “This disciple is incompetent. The silver has all been spent by that Yu Ling’er…”

Before joining the Talisman Sect, Tang Youshu was quite well-off financially, but after entering the sect, he began to support a family.

Buying the horse cart earlier had already used up most of his travel expenses. Now encountering a fox girl who never had enough of anything, Tang Youshu spent his last copper coin in his pocket.

Wei Jie sneered, “You actually listened to her. Could it be that you’ve changed to follow the fox sect instead?”

Tang Youshu said helplessly, “If I didn’t buy it, she would just pick it up and leave, causing others to chase and scold behind us. I had no choice!”

Xiao Xiao heard Tang Youshu say this and immediately came to the rescue, “How can you blame Mr. Tang for this? He is the most kind-hearted person and won’t refuse others… Besides, why should he spend the money he earns through hard work on you? It’s just right that we don’t have money. We’ll earn it ourselves.”

Wei Jie raised his eyebrows, “How to earn it?”

Xiao Xiao had already thought of it before entering the city. She didn’t want to keep spending her master’s money either, so she pointed to an empty space at the corner of the street and said, “Our Talisman Sect is full of talents. What’s difficult about performing on the street?”

As a result, in order to pay off the tea bill, the three generations of the Talisman Sect, plus a fox girl, were ready to start performing on the prosperous streets of Luoyi City.

The owner of the teahouse was afraid that these few people would eat and run, so he specially called a waiter to keep an eye on them at the street corner.

Wei Jie seemed to find it embarrassing and refused to step forward. He first went to the nearby money exchange and came out, then sat on a stool dragged from the teahouse like a big boss, with his arms crossed, watching his master perform on the street with the crowd.

Xiao Xiao beat the copper gong borrowed from the monkey performer next to her and shouted loudly, “Ancestral magic trick! Turning people alive! Everyone come and see!”

Tang Youshu followed his grand-master’s instructions and held an eating bowl, waiting to collect copper plates on the side.

And Cui Xiao Xiao pulled Yu Ling’er to stand in the field. The two girls, as beautiful as flowers, were more effective than the copper gong. In a short while, they attracted a large group of men, women, old and young.

Yu Ling’er was not only afraid of the dark but also a little dizzy from the crowd. Seeing so many people watching her, she became a little timid, and her fox tail almost fell to the ground.

Xiao Xiao was quick-witted and pinched her waist hard, letting the fox girl hold back this breath.

She smiled and whispered in Yu Ling’er’s ear, “Mr. Tang’s silver has all been spent by you. Whether we eat big fish and meat or clear-stewed fox tonight all depends on your performance! Remember what I told you, don’t ruin my show!”

Yu Ling’er was bound by the poisonous oath with her mother and couldn’t escape Cui Xiao Xiao’s clutches. She could only put on a long face and nod in grievance.

Next, Xiao Xiao brought down a large box used for luggage from the horse cart.

Yu Ling’er danced a fancy fox dance with a bitter face, swaying her waist, and then jumped into the box.

Then Xiao Xiao closed the lid, solemnly chanted incantations, and knocked on the wooden box three times.

When the box was opened again, everyone saw that the lovely girl was gone, and only a snow-white fox poked its furry head out of the box. The fox’s eyes were even wet, which was quite cute, causing a group of children to scream.

When Xiao Xiao closed the box and knocked three times again, she opened the box, and the fox was gone. The girl was sitting in the box with red eyes.

People immediately applauded and cheered, and a few rascals even made a fuss, saying that they wanted to see the girl shake her butt and dance again.

Seeing the crowd cheering loudly, Xiao Xiao hurriedly signaled Tang Youshu to take the bowl to collect money.

Unfortunately, the people of Luoyi were all cunning. When watching the magic trick, they surrounded three layers inside and out, but when it was time to collect money, the crowd suddenly dispersed like birds and beasts, and there were not many people who gave money.

Cui Xiao Xiao looked at the pitiful few copper plates in the bowl and was momentarily speechless.

At this moment, Wei Jie said lazily, “It seems that your idea of performing on the street is not very reliable. In my opinion, it’s better to ask which nearby villages lack rain. Then, with your two water-guiding talismans, you can exchange for a large bag of incense money.”

Xiao Xiao saw that he didn’t exert any effort and still spoke sarcastically, so she said with a false smile, “Good idea! But distant water can’t quench immediate thirst. Otherwise, you can think of a way to pay this tea bill!”

Wei Jie nodded, took out a silver ingot of considerable weight from his bosom, turned around and threw it to the teahouse waiter who followed him closely, and even generously said that there was no need to give change. The rest was a tip.

After the shop attendant thanked him with a bow, Xiao Xiao walked over and asked in surprise, “Did you pick someone’s money pouch? Where did you get the silver?”

Wei Jie chuckled, “I had silver in the first place. Why would I need to steal?”

It turned out that in the brocade box brought by the two cousins, in addition to the letter, there were more than a dozen silver notes given to him by the Wei family matriarch.

The Wei family guarded the underworld, and there were silver mines everywhere at the intersection of yin and yang, but no one could approach them, so the Wei family could be said to be as rich as a country.

Just now, Wei Jie went to the money exchange next door and exchanged a silver note. In addition to small silver ingots, he also exchanged three gold bars, which were convenient to spend.

Hearing his explanation, Xiao Xiao realized that her disciple was actually so rich!

She pursed her lips and said angrily, “Since you have silver, why didn’t you say so earlier? You’ve been spending your disciple’s silver, and now that you have money, you don’t help him. Don’t you feel guilty?”

Wei Jie blinked his light purple eyes and smiled extremely handsomely, “You didn’t ask me either! And I think if you spend my money, you will definitely feel guilty, so you didn’t take it out…”

Hmm… Very reasonable. Xiao Xiao rarely lost in an argument and was once again dumbfounded by Wei Jie’s retort.

She, who was under the Gold Consuming Curse, indeed had no moral high ground when it came to spending money.

After all, she was the queen of freeloading, eating from her grand-disciple and then her disciple.

So Xiao Xiao immediately shut up and respectfully cupped her hands towards Wei Jie, saying, “Alright, it was my fault for not recognizing the God of Wealth. I’ll offer incense to you later and enshrine you!”

Wei Jie was amused by Xiao Xiao’s quick acceptance again. The God of Wealth waved his hand, and with a handful of gold and silver, he took the entire Talisman Sect to experience the prosperity of the big city.

In this prosperous capital city, it was always good to have plenty of money.

At least the people of the sect didn’t have to sleep outdoors in the suburbs at night. Instead, they booked three guest rooms in the largest inn in the city.

Since being chained together with Wei Jie, Xiao Xiao hadn’t had a good bath.

Even though they were separated later, she couldn’t touch water because of her injured arm.

Now that they had entered the inn, because Wei Jie was generous with his money, the shop attendant was not stingy at all when heating up the water.

When the wooden tub was filled with warm water, Xiao Xiao suspended her injured arm outside the tub and could finally enjoy a delightful bath.

Yu Ling’er followed her mother’s words and became Xiao Xiao’s personal maid, using a loofah to scrub Xiao Xiao’s neck and back.

However, Yu Ling’er was a bit curious and felt that it was strange for Wei Jie to open a separate room by himself. He obviously had an ambiguous relationship with Cui Xiao Xiao, so wasn’t staying in separate rooms like this just a pretense?

The little fox had simple thoughts and asked whatever she had in mind. As a result, Xiao Xiao heard it and just wanted to wash her ears, “Ah, what kind of nonsense is this? Wei Jie and I have a pure and innocent relationship. How could we have any private affairs between men and women?”

When Xiao Xiao pursued the matter further, she finally figured out that Qin Lingxiao had splashed her with a big basin of filthy dirty water.

She was so angry that she splashed water at the little fox and said, “You believe everything Qin Lingxiao says? At that time, I was clearly suffering from the yin poison attack, and Wei Jie was afraid that I would hurt myself, so he pressed me down tightly. Our master-disciple relationship is pure and innocent!”

Yu Ling’er was overwhelmed by Xiao Xiao’s imposing sect master aura. She wiped the water droplets on her face and shrank her neck slightly. She was still unwilling to give up and defended the benefactor, “With the way you two looked at that time, anyone would have misunderstood. How can you blame Young Pavilion Master Qin?”

Xiao Xiao knew that this Yu Ling’er’s heart was filled with the benefactor. If she spoke ill of Qin Lingxiao behind his back, she was afraid it would backfire.

Thinking of Qin Lingxiao’s cold and aloof appearance when he was followed by beautiful female cultivators but never showed them any affection, the little fox’s deep love would probably go to waste.

However, Xiao Xiao was more curious that in the previous trajectory, this delicate and pampered fox princess actually followed Wei Jie down the mountain.

Seeing how Wei Jie kept scaring Yu Ling’er now, threatening to skin her fox fur, Xiao Xiao really couldn’t imagine how Yu Ling’er would affectionately warm the quilt and fan the pillow for Benefactor Wei Jie, being subservient and lowly.

At night, Tang Youshu and Wei Jie each stayed in a separate guest room, while Cui Xiao Xiao and Yu Ling’er stayed in the same room.

It wasn’t that Wei Jie was stingy and unwilling to open a separate room for the fox girl. It was because Yu Ling’er had a taste of the harshness of the human world for the first time. During the day, she was forced to perform on the street and finally understood the truth that money could crush a heroic man.

Afraid that Xiao Xiao would force her to perform again, Yu Ling’er now didn’t dare to waste a single penny of these people’s money, so she refused to let Wei Jie open another room for her.

Xiao Xiao had been forced to be locked together with Wei Jie for a long time and cherished the wonderful time of sleeping alone. She tactfully told Ling’er that she was not used to sharing a bed with others.

As a result, Yu Ling’er hugged a chair cushion and said very sensibly, “I don’t need to sleep on the bed.”

After saying that, she put the chair cushion in the corner opposite the bed, then transformed into her fox form, curled up into a white ball, and prepared to sleep on the chair cushion like this.

That pitiful appearance was like a poor little thing that no one wanted.

Xiao Xiao couldn’t bear to see it and said to her, “Why don’t… you still come up and sleep on the bed with me…”

Yu Ling’er shook her head with great determination, then buried her pointed fox mouth in her fluffy big tail, closed her eyes, and fell asleep defenseless in a short while.

Xiao Xiao looked at the fox girl’s good sleep and couldn’t help but admire her again.

This was indeed a fox princess who had grown up with everyone pampering her. Where was there even a hint of vigilance? She was so ignorant of worldly affairs that she was simply like a child!

However, she obviously didn’t have the carefree attitude of the fox girl. Arriving at a new place, she always had to toss and turn for a long time before she could fall asleep reluctantly.

Since she couldn’t sleep, she simply got up and started meditating.

Since drinking the spiritual spring, her dantian was full and automatically condensed into a ball. But to refine this ball of qi into a core required a high degree of concentration and a strong foundation in establishing a foundation.

Xiao Xiao didn’t know the trick at first, but when she was free, Wei Jie actually listened to her words and explained his insights to her in detail.

Hearing the gentleman’s words was better than reading books for ten years.

With the guidance of her disciple, Master Xiao Xiao immediately grasped the trick of condensing qi into a core, and her meditation progress in the past few days could be said to be rapid.

But it was precisely because of Wei Jie’s words that Xiao Xiao suspected his cultivation. To what stage had he progressed now?

After all, a heavenly genius with his extraordinary comprehension ability could not be estimated and measured by ordinary people’s standards.

When the qi was condensed, the ancient treasure sword hanging at the head of the bed also hummed and buzzed along with Xiao Xiao’s breathing, as if responding to its owner from afar, emitting a faint glow.

The sword qi was too strong, and demons made way.

Even the little fox sleeping was disturbed by the sword light and felt uncomfortable.

In the end, the little fox got up drowsily, held the seat cushion in her mouth, and crawled under the bed in one go. After avoiding the sword light, she continued to sleep soundly.

Xiao Xiao also discovered that her qi could actually resonate with this treasure sword from afar. This feeling was extremely similar to the principle of the sword sect’s unity of person and sword.

Although she couldn’t condense qi into a sword like the sword sect, wasn’t this divine sword forged by heavenly punishment better than those qi swords?

Just as she was concentrating on practicing qi at a critical moment, melodious sounds of silk and bamboo came from the street not far from the inn.

It should have been a time of quiet night, but in a prosperous city like Luoyi, the singing and dancing had just begun.

Xiao Xiao’s room was facing the street. Although she tried to meditate with a calm mind, the silk and bamboo music disturbed her ears, making it impossible for her to be at peace.

In the end, Xiao Xiao simply got up, pushed open the door, and looked out at the street through the window along the corridor.

It turned out that not far from the inn was a tall restaurant, and under the restaurant, a luxuriously decorated carriage slowly drove up.

When it arrived at the restaurant with upturned eaves, four or five beautifully dressed maids got out of the carriage, followed by a woman wearing a long gauze veil hat and a flowing silk long dress embroidered with brocade. With the support of the maids, she slowly got out of the carriage.

Xiao Xiao saw from a distance that the woman’s long dress was like a phoenix tail, trailing on the ground, extremely luxurious!

Xiao Xiao originally just took a casual glance, but when she saw the woman gently swaying her waist and gracefully walking forward, she was deeply attracted by the silhouette of the woman in the long dress.

Although she couldn’t see her face, just the charming posture while walking was so enchanting and graceful. What kind of peerless beauty must she be to carry such elegance?

The men gathered around the carriage were obviously also attracted by the woman. They surrounded her in three layers inside and out. Some of them even had infatuated expressions and some drunkards were mumbling and crying about their lovesickness.

But soon, these people were driven away by the swordsmen who walked out of the restaurant. The leading swordsman sternly shouted at the drunkards, “Prince Can is drinking here. Riffraff are not allowed to approach!”

And that woman in luxurious clothes was also welcomed into the restaurant like a star…

After a while, the elegant silk and bamboo music in the restaurant seemed to change to a new tune. A melodious and lingering singing voice spread out from the restaurant.

When the singing reached the inn, the sound was actually not very loud, just some faint lingering echoes.

However, since condensing qi in her dantian, Xiao Xiao’s hearing had also become different from ordinary people’s and greatly improved. The faint singing, when reaching her ears, was clear word by word.

After listening to just a few sentences, Xiao Xiao actually felt her mind wandering and losing control. She just wanted to enter the restaurant quickly to listen to the singing more closely.

As a result, in a moment of distraction, she actually leaped up, intending to jump directly out of the window.

But just as she left the window sill, her wrist was firmly grasped, and then a force pulled her back.

Xiao Xiao’s arm was in pain, and she also sobered up a lot.

She looked up and saw that the one who pulled her back was Wei Jie, who should have been sleeping early.

  • Mistaken Era 32

    Chapter 32

If things were like this, if Cui Xiao Xiao didn’t take in Yu Ling’er, it would simply be forcing the little fox to scatter her cultivation and return to her original form!

There was no other way. If Yu Ling’er wanted to follow, then let her follow!

However, Xiao Xiao said the ugly words upfront. She didn’t take in Yu Ling’er as a disciple or servant. If Yu Ling’er wanted to follow, she could follow. If she didn’t want to follow, she could leave. Xiao Xiao definitely wouldn’t stop her.

As for things like eating, if Yu Ling’er practiced grain abstinence and didn’t eat human food, that would be best. But if she wanted to eat, she had to find a way herself.

There was no other choice. Xiao Xiao felt distressed for her master. His current money was all earned bit by bit through the hard work of taking pulses and selling medicinal plasters.

Originally, having a young man support her and a big boss like Wei Jie who ate and drank extravagantly was already tough enough. If a hundred-year-old fox demon was added, she was afraid that if her master supported so many people at such a young age, he would be too tired to handle it.

When they came down from Mount Tuyun, although there was an extra burden behind them and her arm was still burning with pain, Xiao Xiao felt very lucky. After all, she had originally planned to have her arm severed.

Perhaps it was because she and Wei Jie endured the heavenly lightning together. The tribulation that was originally supposed to sever an arm was divided between the two of them, greatly reduced.

Although her injuries were severe and her arm was still in a splint wrapped in bandages, she breathed a huge sigh of relief.

After all, after this tribulation, the chain connecting her and Wei Jie was finally broken, and the shackle on her wrist was also struck to ashes by the heavenly lightning. It could be considered a blessing in disguise.

Even if one arm was severely injured, it was worth it!

However, Wei Jie obviously had many doubts in his heart. If Cui Xiao Xiao returned to Mount Tuyun to fulfill her promise to the Fox King and block the calamity for the fox tribe, it would be easy to explain.

But she seemed to have known long ago that there was an ancient treasure sword on Mount Tuyun that could block disasters. How could that be explained?

When he asked, Xiao Xiao blinked her eyes, and lies came out of her mouth, “The ancestor of our Talisman Sect was an old acquaintance of the fox tribe of Mount Tuyun and knew the hidden secret of the sword behind the mountain. This sword was left behind by Goddess Nüwa back then. It dared to defy the heavens, so naturally, it could withstand the heavenly punishment.”

Her words, half true and half false, could indeed deceive people. After Wei Jie nodded, he didn’t ask anymore.

After leaving Mount Tuyun, the first thing on Xiao Xiao’s mind was to find a restaurant, order four loudly resounding meat dishes, bury her face in a large bowl, and eat hard!

In the meantime, when Wei Jie wanted to take an extra piece of meat with his chopsticks, he was blocked by his master’s chopsticks and even received a fierce glare from her big eyes.

Wei Jie realized that fighting with his master for meat was the same as fighting for food with a vicious dog. It was not something a smart person should do!

So he also knew his place and didn’t eat anymore. He only occasionally added chicken legs and pig feet to the bowl of Xiao Xiao, whose arm was injured and inconvenient to pick up dishes.

The fox demon Yu Ling’er didn’t qualify to sit at the table. She only sat at the side of an empty table, her slender fingers rubbing her small bundle, looking at them with resentment.

Only when Xiao Xiao filled her stomach was she satisfied yet frustrated, leaning back and apologizing slightly to Tang Youshu, “Master… Mr. Tang, why don’t you eat too? How come you only took a few bites of your bowl of rice?”

Because the Talisman Sect was unconventional and varied from person to person, Xiao Xiao had always called her grand-disciple “Mr. Tang.” After all, she was clear in her heart that this person was her benefactor. If she called her grand-disciple by insulting the teacher and destroying the ancestor, she wouldn’t be able to sleep at night.

As soon as Mr. Tang heard his grand-master care about him, he hurriedly used his chopsticks to shovel the rice into his mouth and swallowed it dry.

After all, he had witnessed his grand-master’s skill in guarding food. She almost stuck chopsticks into his master Wei Jie’s throat, scaring him so much that he didn’t dare to pick up dishes at all.

Xiao Xiao hurriedly put large pieces of fish meat from the plate into Tang Youshu’s bowl.

What a joke, these dishes were all bought with Mr. Tang Youshu’s money. If he couldn’t eat, who could eat?

Yu Ling’er originally didn’t understand why Cui Xiao Xiao didn’t let her eat with them. But seeing Cui Xiao Xiao’s starving appearance, she understood the eating style of the Talisman Sect. It turned out to be such a fierce competition.

She sat for a while and felt hungry, so she quietly got up and went to the back yard of the restaurant.

Not long after, Yu Ling’er walked back with her head lowered.

On Xiao Xiao’s side, she was packing up the leftover dishes when she heard someone shouting in the back yard of the restaurant, “What’s going on? How did two chickens disappear from the yard? Oh no, there’s even a pool of blood here? Damn it, did a weasel come in?”

Xiao Xiao listened for a while, then turned her head to look at Yu Ling’er. As a result, she saw her elegantly licking her tongue, and there were two chicken feathers stuck to the corner of her mouth…

Oh my goodness! Xiao Xiao quickly went over and plucked off her chicken feathers.

Tang Youshu hurriedly went to pay the bill and used the excuse of giving a tip to pay for two more chickens.

After coming out of the restaurant, Xiao Xiao said to the fox girl with a heavy heart, “This is a village and town, with people everywhere. You have to do things according to human rules, right? Stealing and snatching like this will definitely cause trouble sooner or later! Besides, isn’t one chicken enough? Why did you eat two?”

Her tone was still fairly euphemistic, but Yu Ling’er’s eyes were already filled with tears. She only trembled her lips and sobbed, “I didn’t want to… but I was hungry…”

Xiao Xiao, who had been practicing grain abstinence for many days, deeply sympathized with the feeling of hunger.

Although this little demon was forcibly sent by the fox tribe, if she ignored her, this little fox would eventually die under people’s cudgels due to theft.

Xiao Xiao thought that her master back then didn’t despise her for being a swindler and pickpocket on the streets and gladly accepted her as a disciple. Then when it was her turn, how could she ignore Yu Ling’er just because she was a demon?

So she solemnly said to Yu Ling’er, “From now on, if you are hungry, tell me. Don’t steal on your own anymore! If you are sincere in doing good, the Talisman Sect can consider accepting you as a disciple in the future…”

Wei Jie, who was beside them, couldn’t help but laugh when he heard this.

Xiao Xiao asked him what he was laughing at. Wei Jie said lazily with a hooked corner of his mouth, “I’m happy for Master that the Talisman Sect is going to expand again… But I want to ask, since the Talisman Sect accepts the son of a female demon and also accepts a fox demon girl… Are we going to enter the demonic path?”

Nonsense! Sect Master Cui glared, “Our Lingshan Talisman Sect is an upright sect in the human world! How can we be mentioned in the same breath as the demonic path!”

Oh, Wei Jie nodded in realization but just smiled without saying anything!

But when he asked this, Xiao Xiao was very depressed in her heart.

Come to think of it, she was taking big strides on the path where Wei Jie had become a demon in the past.

Think about it, she had the Demon Lord’s Demon Bead in her body, the Demon Lord’s sharp sword “Defying the Heavens” at her waist, and following behind her were the Demon King Wei Jie and his former left and right arms.

The righteous flag of Lingshan Talisman Sect was a bit shaky two hundred years ago. If something went wrong, a new demonic sect leader might be born.

But if she used this excuse to clean up the sect, it wouldn’t be bad either!

Thinking of this, halfway through the walk, she took the opportunity to probe, “Actually, our Talisman Sect is not really righteous… I’ve always had this wish to try entering the demonic path. Perhaps in the future, the Talisman Sect will also take the path of the demonic way… You are a descendant of the Demon Subduing Wei Family. How can you go astray? Otherwise, let’s end our master-disciple relationship here.”

Wei Jie looked down at his master who was talking big about wholeheartedly entering the demonic path, smiling yet not smiling, “Entering the demonic path? Not bad either. I think the so-called righteous path in the human world is not interesting. Children don’t dislike their mothers for being ugly, and dogs don’t dislike their homes for being poor. Please rest assured, Master. Whether you are an immortal or a demon, this disciple will follow you all the way!”

Xiao Xiao was speechless, blocked by his pure heart. In the end, she could only nitpick and angrily said, “Fool! Didn’t you see that I was testing you? How can our Lingshan Talisman Sect walk the evil and deviant path? You have no self-control and are really learning to bite people from a vicious dog! In the future, won’t you be led astray by demons and lose your true heart? I think it’s better to expel you from the sect early!”

After saying that, she was about to drive Wei Jie away.

Before the abandoned disciple Wei Jie could say anything, Tang Youshu beside them hurriedly came to persuade, “Grand-master, Master was just joking with you. You mustn’t take it seriously! If Master is expelled from the sect, then… then won’t disciple and Master become abandoned disciples of Lingshan Talisman Sect together? With such a reputation, how… how can I live…”

Seeing her benefactor Mr. Tang’s eyes moist with sadness, Xiao Xiao was so scared that she hurriedly took out a handkerchief and coaxed in a soft voice, “You are you, and your master is your master. How can you be mentioned in the same breath? Oh my, don’t cry. I… I was also joking with your master…”

Just as she was flustered, that fox girl came to add to the chaos, “I’m hungry. When are we going to eat? I only eat chicken innards and breast meat. One is not enough. Rabbit meat is fine too. I’m not picky…”

This group of people from the Talisman Sect walked slowly and leisurely. After walking for half a day, it was too appetizing.

At this time, Wei Jie, who was almost expelled from the sect and in a bad mood, said coldly, “In my opinion, let’s eat roasted fox tonight. I’ll slaughter the fox and skin it. It’s also a good opportunity for Master to see if disciple’s determination to subdue demons is firm or not.”

Hearing these words, Yu Ling’er cried out in anger, and there were even sharp fox cries mixed in her crying.

Xiao Xiao was helpless. This sect full of chaos was really enough for her, the sect master, to drink a pot of tea!

Xiao Xiao’s words just now obviously hurt Wei Jie’s pride. After scaring Yu Ling’er to tears, he didn’t make a sound and just turned around with a cold face, disappearing without a trace.

Seeing that Wei Jie disappeared in the blink of an eye, Xiao Xiao was stunned for a moment, then touched her arm that had never healed and slowly let out a long breath.

It was best that he left on his own initiative!

As for the remaining tribulations in his bumpy life, he could slowly go through them himself.

She definitely didn’t want to get involved with him again and continue to be his scapegoat!

Tang Youshu also didn’t expect his master to leave as soon as he said it, so he could only ask his grand-master anxiously, “Grand-master, should we go after Master?”

Xiao Xiao comforted her master, then said to Yu Ling’er who was still sobbing, “Alright, he’s gone. You don’t need to be afraid. Aren’t you hungry? The mountains and forests here are dense. You can go catch some pheasants to eat yourself.”

But Yu Ling’er shook her head, “No, I’m afraid…”

Xiao Xiao narrowed her eyes and asked, “Afraid of what?”

Yu Ling’er looked at the setting sun and said in a low voice, “I’m afraid of the dark…”

She was the pearl of the fox tribe. From a young age, the tribesmen would catch prey for her and let her pick the tender ones to eat. And even if she hunted, she generally wouldn’t be alone.

Cui Xiao Xiao actually let her hunt alone at night. What a joke! Did she want to scare her to death?

Xiao Xiao understood. Her experience was still too shallow. She actually didn’t know there were fox demons afraid of the dark!

Weren’t the fox spirits in books always knocking on scholars’ doors in the middle of the night?

Now that she thought about it, the Fox King sent such a delicate and pampered fox demon princess to her, saying that she would be a maid to warm her quilt and fan her pillow. Could it be that she was retaliating against her?

In the past, in similar situations where they were stuck in the middle of nowhere, it was always Wei Jie who went hunting. But now that Wei Jie was gone and the fox demon couldn’t be relied on, and Tang Youshu was weak and powerless, only she, the sect master with an injured arm, could go hunting alone.

Tang Youshu originally wanted to go with her, but Yu Ling’er, who was guarding by the bonfire, kept shouting that she was afraid to be alone, so Xiao Xiao let Tang Youshu stay and went to see if there were any pheasants or wild rabbits to catch.

She had always relied on Soul-Locking Talismans when hunting, placing the talismans on the ground and waiting for the prey to fall into the trap.

Unfortunately, her luck was not good today. She waited for a long time in the dense forest, but the Soul-Locking Talisman only immobilized small lizards and some reptiles passing by.

She didn’t know if that little fox who was afraid of the dark was picky and could eat a lizard to fill her stomach first.

Xiao Xiao herself was actually very hungry, and her arm that had never healed was still aching faintly.

If Wei Jie were here, she would probably be eating roasted meat by the bonfire at this time.

It had to be said that although Wei Jie was the future Demon King, he was more reliable than her senior brothers in daily life.

Along the way, many things that Xiao Xiao had neglected turned out to have been done by him all along.

When Xiao Xiao returned slowly with a lizard in hand, she smelled the aroma of meat.

She suspiciously walked a few steps faster and found that there were actually two roasted chickens and a roasted rabbit on the bonfire.

And Wei Jie, who was supposed to leave in anger, was sitting by the bonfire, sitting at ease, chatting and laughing with Tang Youshu and Yu Ling’er, and occasionally sprinkling salt on the roasted meat.

When he saw Sect Master Cui walking over with a lizard the length of a finger, Wei Jie said with a half-smile, “Did Master change her taste? Why so heavy?”

Xiao Xiao casually threw away the lizard, then slowly sat down and stared at Wei Jie, asking, “Didn’t you leave?”

Wei Jie tore off a rabbit leg and handed it to Xiao Xiao, then said casually, “I just went hunting. Where can I go?”

This kind of returning good for evil was truly the act of a gentleman, making her, the master, seem a bit petty-minded in comparison.

Xiao Xiao slowly gnawed on the rabbit leg, not knowing how to continue putting on a stern face to drive him away. After all, they were no longer bound together. If she still mixed with him, she would simply be throwing herself into the gates of hell.

Just at this moment, Wei Jie sat down beside her and took a handkerchief to wipe his injured master’s mouth.

Xiao Xiao was caught off guard and didn’t dodge. When she raised her head to reprimand him for meddling, she happened to bump into his light purple eyes.

Under the flickering bonfire, his face turned sideways was handsome and charming, and also exuded endless depth. When he wiped her oily mouth, he didn’t seem to feel that he was overstepping at all, only saying with a hint of doting, “Look at you, eating like a child, even getting oil on your nose…”

Xiao Xiao was a bit speechless. She suddenly felt that Wei Jie was full of fatherly aura. What was going on?

At this moment, Wei Jie said again, “By the way, I suddenly remembered that there is a ghost doctor in Luoyi City who can probably treat your arm. It’s not far from here to Luoyi City, and there are only a few days left before his consultation time, so we should make it in time.”

When Xiao Xiao heard him say this, she suddenly thought of Wei Jie’s next tribulation, which seemed to be related to Luoyi City.

According to his original trajectory, he was supposed to go to Luoyi City to treat his severed arm.

The Demon Bead said that even if Wei Jie’s life had slight changes, the sufferings he should have endured could not be lacking.

Even if he didn’t bear it himself, someone had to bear it for him.

But Wei Jie’s injury was not severe. If she parted ways with Wei Jie here, would he go to Luoyi?

Thinking of this, she opened her mouth to probe, “Actually… my injury is not serious… and I also want to let you guys travel around to train for a while. I don’t know where you would go if you were alone.”

Wei Jie raised his eyebrows. He found that his master loved to mention topics like “parting” today.

But since Xiao Xiao asked, he thought for a moment and said, “I would probably go to Beiming to travel. I heard that the Kun whale has appeared there again. Maybe if I’m lucky, I can see the grand sight of the Kun transforming into a Peng bird.”

Xiao Xiao bit her lip. Beiming was far away from here. If he really went there, he wouldn’t be able to return for several years. Wouldn’t his life’s tribulations be messed up?

The thunderous sound of heavenly punishment seemed to still echo in her ears. She knew that she couldn’t part with Wei Jie for the time being. She had to guide Wei Jie to Luoyi and go through the tribulations he should go through.

But everything didn’t have to be thought of so pessimistically. For example, on Mount Tuyun, she and Wei Jie, who were supposed to have their arms severed, didn’t they offset the heavenly punishment by enduring the tribulation together and luckily escaped the fate of severed arms?

Next, she just needed to lead Wei Jie to experience the hardships he suffered in his previous life again, guide him to successfully become a demon, and then she could leave at ease and return to two hundred years later.

Thinking of this, Xiao Xiao perked up again and was no longer cold and harsh to Wei Jie, wanting to expel him from the sect.

In addition to diligently sprinkling some freshly picked wild onions on Wei Jie’s chicken leg to add flavor, she also picked up a handkerchief to wipe his mouth.

Tang Youshu saw that his grand-master and master were on good terms again, and he gratifyingly handed the wine gourd to his master.

At this time, the bonfire was bright, the roasted meat was fragrant, the master was kind, the disciple was filial, and everything was so harmonious.

Yu Ling’er had never tasted roasted chicken meat before. After tasting it, she found that it was actually much tastier than bloody innards!

It seemed that this Talisman Sect that ate and drank all the time indeed had some skills. Following these people, at least her mouth wouldn’t suffer.

But thinking of her sweetheart in Soaring Cloud Pavilion, the little fox fell into lovesickness again. While gnawing on chicken meat, she occasionally let out sorrowful fox cries, causing the roosting birds to fly in disorder…

Since the next destination was clear, the group’s journey became much faster.

Although Wei Jie knew the art of teleportation, he could only quickly advance with Xiao Xiao alone.

As for Yu Ling’er, she was absentminded the whole way and couldn’t be relied on to lead Tang Youshu to walk faster.

So in the next town, Wei Jie simply let Tang Youshu buy a horse cart, so they could walk faster this way.

Yu Ling’er was afraid of horses and sat in the back of the cart. Tang Youshu was responsible for driving the cart, while Wei Jie himself used light body techniques to jump back and forth in front of and behind the horse cart.

Xiao Xiao finally got some peace and quiet, lying alone in the horse cart, flipping through her master’s secret manual.

Thanks to her master’s great habit of writing autobiographies, she could leisurely experience the glorious journey of Ancestor Wei Jie in this era two hundred years ago.

Her master wrote in great detail. After recovering the fox tribe on Mount Tuyun, Wei Jie took Tang Youshu and the fox tribe to the prosperous capital city of Luoyi to visit the ghost doctor.

In Luoyi City, Wei Jie unintentionally ran into his mother, who had been separated from him for many years.

Female demons don’t age for a thousand years. Even though she gave birth to a son more than ten years ago, she still had the charming appearance of a young girl.

This female demon, under the pseudonym Siling, resided in the largest singing and dancing brothel in the city. Every time the moon rose and ghosts and demons walked at night, she would appear on a high platform eight zhang tall, singing enchantingly, bewitching the world, and countless dignitaries and nobles fell for her.

After seeing his mother, Wei Jie learned of his mother’s intention.

Female demons are heartless and regard men as playthings. But Siling unexpectedly fell in love with the head of the Wei family, Wei Jingling. It was this little bit of mortal love that allowed her demon body to give birth to human flesh and blood.

However, back then, in front of her eyes, her beloved was forced to death by the so-called orthodox cultivation sects of the Four Great Sects.

This hatred lingered, and the female demon Siling entered the inner demon, determined to dismantle the Four Great Sects and avenge her beloved.

Unfortunately, she was hiding in Luoyi City, but her whereabouts were discovered by people from the Four Great Sects. So the pavilion master of Soaring Cloud Pavilion gathered everyone to go capture the female demon.

In order to save his mother, Wei Jie killed the sect master of Tianxin Sect, one of the Four Great Sects, and he himself became notorious for revealing demonic arts, hated by cultivation practitioners in the world.

And Wei Jie accepted his mother’s deathbed admonition, taking the destruction of the Four Great Sects as his own responsibility, laying the foundation for the later massacre of the Four Great Sects.

In short, that Luoyi City was a city full of troubles.

Xiao Xiao closed the secret manual and let out another long sigh.

Her sigh had not yet dissipated when the curtain of the horse cart was lifted, and Wei Jie squatted on the edge of the cart, asking Xiao Xiao, “Where are you feeling unwell?”

Xiao Xiao stared blankly at Wei Jie. That face was really handsome and outstanding…

Looking and looking, she sighed again.

The current Wei Jie, although somewhat unruly due to his bumpy life, was still a sunny young man.

But when he entered Luoyi City, he would be drawn into the deep hatred and blood feud of his parents. From then on, the seeds of slaughter would be planted in his heart, and he probably would never see his current heroic and carefree appearance again.

Thinking of this, Xiao Xiao’s heart ached for Wei Jie.

Wei Jie originally heard Xiao Xiao sigh and thought her wound was hurting, so he lifted the curtain to ask. But he didn’t expect that she would just stare at him blankly, and after a while, her eyes actually became moist.

Although he was long accustomed to the capricious temperament of this little master, seeing her big eyes filled with water droplets like this, he couldn’t help but feel pity. He subconsciously said in a gentle voice, “Is it really painful? Bear with it a little longer. We will soon enter Luoyi City…”

As he spoke, he even handed her a large handful of newly picked bayberries and stuffed a round one into her mouth.

Seeing Xiao Xiao’s nose wrinkle from the sourness of the bayberries, Wei Jie couldn’t help but smile, revealing his tiger teeth, “This is Tang Youshu’s prescription. He said you ate too much meat these past few days and should eat more of this to aid digestion and invigorate the spleen…”

It seemed that Wei Jie was well-versed in the ways of the sect and also knew that he couldn’t compete with Tang Youshu for favor, so he pushed the blame for provoking his master to his obedient disciple.

Xiao Xiao heard that it was care from Tang Youshu and finally forced herself to swallow a sour fruit. Then, with her big eyes wrinkled from the sourness and tears, she poked her head out of the horse cart and looked ahead.

Sure enough, there was a tall city wall in front, and the road was increasingly crowded with people, gradually becoming lively.

She had eaten well these past few days, and her originally thin cheeks had become full again. Under the sunlight, her face was rosy, and the fine strands of hair fluttered playfully in the wind…

Xiao Xiao was a pleasant-looking girl. Wei Jie stared at her willow eyebrows and starry eyes for a long time.

When Xiao Xiao turned her gaze, she happened to bump into her disciple’s unrestrained gaze.

  • It turns out, they are the protagonists 60

    Chapter 60: Pure-Hearted Mu Zhi’an

Huang Manting, the daughter of the Morning Glory Chamber of Commerce’s Master Huang, was an eighth-level Foundation Establishment cultivator. Born with a silver spoon in her mouth, she had never been scolded or reprimanded. She displayed extraordinary talent from a young age, reaching the peak of Qi Condensation at thirteen and Foundation Establishment at fourteen.

She was intelligent and gifted, and despite her parents’ busy schedules, she hadn’t developed the spoiled and arrogant personality common among wealthy young mistresses.

However, her flaws were far more insidious.

    Morning Glory Chamber of Commerce.

A luxurious mansion stood proudly in the heart of Tianxuan City’s most prosperous district.

The exquisitely decorated main hall exuded an aura of wealth and power. Huang Manting, known as the “Temptress,” sat gracefully, her legs crossed, her chin resting on her hand, her delicate feet swinging gently.

Beside her, the spy who had been tasked with investigating Mu Zhi’an stood respectfully, reporting his findings.

“Miss, this is what we’ve gathered on Mu Zhi’an.”

She narrowed her eyes, her voice soft. “A few years ago, he was a wastrel, obsessed with women and pleasure. He had nothing to offer but his looks. Then, he became infatuated with the Bai family’s young mistress and tried to change his ways, pursuing her relentlessly, only to be rejected repeatedly.”

“Then, the Bai family faced misfortune, targeted by my father and the Gongsun family head. Bai Ruoxi had no choice but to seek the Mu family’s assistance… So far, so good.”

“But now, the Bai family head has returned, and the entrance exams are approaching. There’s no reason for Bai Ruoxi to be so devoted to him.”

With her strength, joining the Two Polarities Sect would be a simple matter. She might even secure an inner disciple spot.

Why would she be so committed to Mu Zhi’an? Unless… she was truly in love with him.

But she had despised him for so long. He hadn’t even been a backup option. Why had her attitude changed so drastically in just a few days?

“Could she be… under duress?” a servant asked.

Huang Manting tapped her foot, her voice calm. “Impossible. Unless the Bai family was facing annihilation, she wouldn’t submit so easily.”

“And besides… she didn’t seem unwilling yesterday.”

“Perhaps she simply fell in love with him,” the servant suggested.

Huang Manting’s shoe slipped from her foot. She twirled a strand of hair around her finger, her eyes narrowing thoughtfully. “If that’s the case, it’s quite intriguing.”

How had Mu Zhi’an captured her heart in just a few days?

And… how would she react if she discovered that the man she loved was becoming someone else’s pawn?

She tapped her finger against the armrest, and the servant, understanding her meaning, knelt down and slipped her shoe back on.

A servant hurried into the hall, his expression hesitant. “Miss, Young Master Mu is here to see you.”

He remembered Master Huang’s instructions before leaving for the auction house: If Mu Zhi’an came calling, tell him that he was out on business.

He clearly wanted to avoid getting involved in the conflict between the Mu, Gongsun, and Bai families.

He was a businessman. Profit was his only concern.

Huang Manting raised an eyebrow. “Didn’t you tell him my father isn’t here?”

“I did… but he said he was here to see you, Miss.”

    “Oh?” She was intrigued.

As the largest trading house in Tianxuan City, the Morning Glory Chamber of Commerce had dealings with many families, including the Mu family.

However, Mu Zhi’an had rarely spoken to her.

While she was considered a beauty, her personality wasn’t to his liking.

His sudden visit piqued her curiosity.

    “Bring him in,” she said.

Moments later, a handsome young man entered the hall, escorted by a servant.

She smiled sweetly. “Young Master Mu, please, have a seat.”

After he sat down, she dismissed the servants and personally poured him a cup of tea.

“What brings you to our humble establishment so early in the morning, Young Master Mu?” she asked softly.

He chuckled, shaking his head. “I wasn’t planning to visit, but… I heard from my sources that you’ve been investigating me, Miss Huang.”

The Mu family’s reach was indeed extensive. She had only started investigating him yesterday, and the news had already leaked.

She narrowed her eyes, her voice clear and sweet. “Are you here to reprimand me, Young Master Mu?”

Her actions were simply to satisfy her curiosity. They wouldn’t harm the Mu family’s interests. Even if they found out, they would simply issue a verbal warning.

In other words, he was here to throw a tantrum.

But to her surprise, he shook his head.

“How could I reprimand such a beautiful woman?” he said, smiling.

She smiled back, enjoying his flattery.

She studied him, her eyes narrowed. “Then what brings you here…?”

“I’m here to satisfy your curiosity,” he replied earnestly.

“Instead of wasting time and resources on an investigation, I’ll answer your questions directly.”

She chuckled. “Coming here just to satisfy my curiosity? Isn’t that a bit reckless? What if Miss Bai finds out?”

Why does she sound so catty? He took a sip of tea, smiling. “She’s not the jealous type.”

He might not understand women, but he knew that Bai Ruoxi, despite her aloof exterior, was a forgiving person.

After all, with a heart that big… it was only natural for her to be understanding.

“I heard you pursued Miss Bai relentlessly, despite her constant rejections. Is that true?” she asked suddenly.

He had offered to answer her questions, so she wouldn’t hold back.

“It’s true,” he admitted with a chuckle.

He had indeed been rejected repeatedly, treated with disdain. She had only tolerated him because of his family’s status.

But technically, he was still pursuing her, and she was much more receptive now, even shy at times.

“Then how did you manage to win her over in just a few days?” she asked, her curiosity piqued.

He smiled. “I used the same methods as before.”

He sighed dramatically. “Ruoxi is a simple girl. Perhaps she was moved by my sincerity.”

She chuckled softly. “Congratulations, Young Master Mu. She’s a beautiful woman.”

He smiled. “I consider myself lucky.”

She changed the subject. “Miss Bai’s performance yesterday was quite impressive. She defeated Gongsun Cheng with a single strike. How much do you know about that bronze sword of hers?”

This was the real reason for her investigation. While she was curious about their relationship, she was more interested in Bai Ruoxi’s power.

He pondered for a moment. “I don’t know the details, but I doubt anyone at her level can defeat her.”

She stared at him. “You’re that certain?”

“You’re at the eighth level of Foundation Establishment, aren’t you? You saw that sword’s power. You should have a better understanding than I do,” he replied.

    She fell silent.

She didn’t want to admit it, but when she saw that sword… she felt a sense of dread.

She kept telling herself that if she could avoid that strange attack, she would have a chance… but could she truly avoid it?

“It seems Miss Bai will be the first among our generation to join the Two Polarities Sect,” she murmured.

    He smiled, but didn’t answer.

He was simply here to negotiate with the Morning Glory Chamber of Commerce, to put on a show for the Gongsun family. This conversation was merely a way to pass the time.

She leaned forward, her voice a soft murmur. “I might not be a match for Bai Ruoxi, but what if…”

She placed her hand on his, her eyes meeting his. “What if I were… her rival?”

“Forget about being her husband. Be with me instead.”

    She gently squeezed his hand.

He frowned, feigning hesitation, but a flicker of interest appeared in his eyes. “Miss Huang, that’s… inappropriate. I can’t betray Ruoxi.”

She smiled, her grip on her teacup tightening, spilling tea on her chest. She gasped, rising to her feet. “Oh no, Could you help me… clean this up, Young Master Mu?”

He looked down at her, his voice strained. “Miss Huang, I really can’t… Ruoxi would be furious.”

    “Please, just help me”

She took his hand, placing a handkerchief in it, guiding it towards her chest.

    He sighed, reluctantly complying.

She watched him, a flicker of disdain in her eyes.

Bai Ruoxi might be powerful, but her taste in men was disappointing.

A few simple tricks, and he was already smitten.

Today, it was wiping spilled tea. Next time, it would be licking her feet.

That was how you trained a man.

“I apologize for the trouble, Young Master Mu,” she said softly, her eyes filled with feigned remorse. “You’re not angry with me, are you?”

“Miss Huang, please, don’t tell Ruoxi. She wouldn’t forgive me,” he pleaded.

“If she won’t forgive you… you can always be with me,” she murmured. “By the way, we’re hosting an auction in a few days. I’d like to invite you to my private room. Would you do me the honor?”

She looked up at him, her eyes pleading.

“If you refuse, I’ll have to tell Miss Bai about this.”

He hesitated, his expression conflicted. “But I can’t betray Ruoxi. Oh, what am I going to do?”

    He sighed dramatically.

She smiled, her charm captivating, her voice soft and sweet. “Just this once, spend some time with me… please?”

She clasped his hand, her eyes filled with a girlish vulnerability.

Her voice, her beauty, her pleading… a weaker man would have succumbed to her charms.

He looked at her, his acting skills impeccable, and sighed, squeezing her hand gently. “Alright, but please, Miss Huang, don’t threaten me like that again.”

“Really? Thank you!” She clapped her hands excitedly, a strand of hair falling across her face, adding to her allure.

They chatted for a while longer, his gaze lingering on her, as if captivated by her beauty.

Then, seeing that it was getting late, he rose to his feet, preparing to leave.

“I’ll see you at the auction, Miss Huang,” he said, bowing slightly.

She nodded, smiling. “I’m looking forward to it.”

He left the Chamber of Commerce, escorted by a servant.

He flexed his hand, recalling the feel of her touch.

Hmph, she wasn’t even half as substantial as Bai Ruoxi.

No wonder she wasn’t considered the most beautiful woman in Tianxuan City.

Firstly, her personality was unpleasant. And secondly… she was lacking in certain areas.

He climbed into his carriage. “Take me to the Tide Sea Inn,” he instructed the coachman.

He might as well buy some osmanthus cake and visit Lan Mulian while he was out.

The snow lotus he had given her was probably wilting. He could replace it with a fresh one.

  • It turns out, they are the protagonists 59

Chapter 59: A Cultivator Knows No Laziness!

The carriage stopped in front of the Ye Manor, and Ye Lingxuan stepped out gracefully.

As she entered the back garden, she saw several disciples sparring.

The young men, noticing her presence, suddenly became more serious, their movements sharper, their spiritual energy surging.

Their cultivation levels were low, but their intensity… it was as if they were seasoned experts, battling for the very essence of the Dao.

Despite their efforts, their gazes kept drifting towards her.

She might have been humble and unassuming, but she was considered the most beautiful woman in the Ye family. Many of the young disciples harbored secret affections for her.

She smiled politely at their admiring glances, then, clutching the snow lotus, walked towards a secluded corridor.

An elderly man, dressed in plain gray robes, materialized from the shadows.

She turned to face him, her youthful features masking a regal aura. “Elder Wei, is there something I can help you with?”

Elder Wei shook his head, smiling. “I was simply concerned for your well-being, Young Mistress.”

She relaxed, her smile softening. “I told you, Elder Wei. I simply went to repay Ye Qian’s debt. There was no need for concern.”

He chuckled, nodding. “That’s what you said, but… you know Mu Zhi’an’s reputation. When the Master entrusted you to the Ye family, he specifically instructed me to protect you. If anything happened to you, I wouldn’t be able to face him.”

He noticed the snow lotus in her hand, his brow furrowing. “Young Mistress, where did you get that flower?”

He knew she had gone to the Mu Manor. Why had she returned with a flower?

Had someone given it to her on the way back?

She smiled. “Mu Zhi’an gave it to me.”

    He stared at her, surprised.

He knew she had gone to the Mu Manor on Ye Qian’s behalf, and he remembered her expressing her dislike for Mu Zhi’an yesterday.

Had her opinion of him changed so quickly?

She hesitated, then said, “He’s not as bad as I thought.”

Elder Wei blinked, about to ask her to elaborate, when she suddenly changed the subject. “Do you know how to preserve a snow lotus?”

He pondered for a moment. “Typically, if you have Luminous Soil, it can survive for three months without water. However, Luminous Soil is rare and expensive.”

He paused, then added, “But if I remember correctly, there’s a batch of Luminous Soil being auctioned at the Morning Glory Chamber of Commerce in a few days. If you need it, Young Mistress, I can acquire it for you.”

She thought for a moment, then smiled. “There’s no need to trouble yourself, Elder Wei. I’ll ask Qian’er to accompany me to the auction. It’s been a while since I’ve taken a stroll.”

    At the Mu Manor.

Mu Zhi’an quietly opened the door to Bai Ruoxi’s room and saw her, dressed in her usual moon-white robe, sitting by the window, seemingly lost in thought.

He decided to tease her, suppressing his aura as he approached.

But before he could speak, her voice, soft and languid, echoed through the room. “Is there something you need, Young Master Mu?”

She turned to face him, her usual aloofness tinged with a hint of alluring charm.

But her eyes held a trace of reproach.

He had promised to simply meditate last night, but he hadn’t been able to resist touching her.

If she hadn’t maintained a sliver of self-control, she would have been bedridden all day.

He knew why she was annoyed. He sat down beside her, retrieving the snow lotus he had picked earlier.

“I passed by the lotus pond and saw this beautiful snow lotus. It reminded me of you,” he said, smiling.

“It symbolizes loyalty and purity. It’s perfect for you.”

    “A snow lotus?”

Her eyes sparkled as she looked at the flower, then back at him. She nodded, her voice soft. “Thank you. I’ll treasure it.”

She accepted the flower, inhaling its delicate fragrance.

    “It smells lovely,” she murmured.

She wished she could preserve it forever.

He took her hand, his voice gentle. “If you like it, I can give you as many as you want.”

She blushed, her gaze downcast, her heart filled with a sweet warmth.

A soft knock echoed from behind the door.

She straightened up, adjusting her robes and smoothing her hair. He reluctantly withdrew his hand.

His morning cultivation session had been interrupted. He was not pleased.

Who would disturb them at this hour?

No, it must be for me. He waited for her to compose herself, then called out, “Come in.”

The door opened, and a hooded figure, his face obscured, entered the room.

It was one of the Mu family’s spies.

    “Young Master.”

He glanced at Bai Ruoxi, his eyes sharp and observant.

They might seem calm and composed, but the atmosphere in the room… it was charged with a subtle intimacy.

She understood his meaning. “I’ll leave you two to your business,” she said, her voice clear and melodious.

After she left, Mu Zhi’an turned to the spy. “What news do you bring?”

“According to my sources, someone is investigating you, Young Master.”

    He was intrigued. “Who?”

The Gongsun family wouldn’t dare make any moves at this time. The Bai family was unlikely as well. Investigating someone secretly was a sure way to damage their relationship, and considering his current connection with Bai Ruoxi, there was no need for such an investigation.

The Morning Glory Chamber of Commerce… that was also unlikely. Huang Manting’s father was a shrewd man. He knew what was best for his business.

    Could it be Ye Lingxuan?

“It’s the Morning Glory Chamber of Commerce,” the spy replied.

“It can’t be Huang Manting’s father… Did one of his subordinates act without his knowledge?” Mu Zhi’an mused.

    Then, he realized. “Huang Manting?”

He had gone to the sparring arena yesterday, and she had seen him with Bai Ruoxi.

That temptress was after the inner disciple spot. Knowledge was power. It wasn’t surprising that she would investigate those close to Bai Ruoxi.

The spy nodded, then asked tentatively, “Should we stop her?”

Mu Zhi’an chuckled, shaking his head. “Let her investigate. I have nothing to hide.”

He paused, then added, “I have a more important task for you.”

The spy looked at him expectantly.

“Go to the Gongsun Manor and demand compensation,” Mu Zhi’an said.

“Tell them that the fight between Ruoxi and Gongsun Cheng caused me and Miss Bai… emotional distress. We require compensation. I’ll be recuperate at the Two Polarities Sect for three months. That’s all you need to say.”

The spy hesitated. “What kind of compensation, Young Master?”

“Three market districts,” Mu Zhi’an replied.

The spy stared at him, stunned. Then, he spoke cautiously, “The Gongsun family… they won’t agree to that…”

They only had ten market districts! And the young master was demanding three? They weren’t fools.

“The emotional distress alone might not be worth three market districts, but three months of peace and quiet, that’s a different story,” Mu Zhi’an said, taking a sip of tea. “And besides, the Gongsun family might refuse… but Gongsun Xiong won’t.”

Gongsun Xiong was a capitalist, through and through.

    And what were capitalists?

    Selfish creatures.

His family members were vying for his position. He didn’t want to relinquish control, but he also didn’t want to be disturbed during his recovery. He would have to pay a price.

“But I also need to visit the Morning Glory Chamber of Commerce,” Mu Zhi’an continued.

If it was just the Mu and Bai families, Gongsun Xiong might hesitate. He would probably try to form an alliance with the Morning Glory Chamber of Commerce.

Even if they couldn’t defeat the Mu family, they could at least protect themselves.

But if the Mu family joined forces with the Morning Glory Chamber of Commerce… the situation would change drastically.

“Master Huang isn’t meeting with anyone right now,” the spy said.

Huang Manting’s father was a cautious man. He would avoid any unnecessary risks. Even if Mu Zhi’an visited him personally, he would probably refuse to see him.

Mu Zhi’an swirled his tea, a thoughtful expression on his face. “What about Miss Huang?”

“She wants to investigate me, doesn’t she? Let her.”

“I’ll let her ask me anything to my face.”

He was certain that news of his visit to the Morning Glory Chamber of Commerce would reach Gongsun Xiong.

And in his current state, Gongsun Xiong was like a frightened bird. He would overthink everything.

“Go to the Gongsun Manor in two hours and demand those market districts.”

“Just tell him what I said. He’ll agree. He’s a reasonable man.”

“What if… he’s not?” the spy asked.

Mu Zhi’an set down his cup, smiling. “If he wants to be reasonable, let him. If he doesn’t… help him be reasonable.”

After the spy left, Bai Ruoxi returned to the room.

He was sitting on the bed, lost in thought.

She closed the door and sat down beside him. “What’s wrong?”

He inhaled her fragrance, returning to the present. “Nothing much. Just thinking about… how to approach the Morning Glory Chamber of Commerce.”

“Why are you going there?” she asked, confused.

She added quickly, “You don’t have to tell me if it’s a secret.”

She was simply concerned. If he didn’t want to share, she wouldn’t pry.

He shook his head. “It’s not a secret. I’m going to meet with Miss Huang.”

He wrapped an arm around her waist, his movements so natural that she barely reacted.

“Are you going to see her father?” she asked after a moment.

He shook his head. “Miss Huang.”

He felt her stiffen slightly, then relax.

She glanced at him, her voice soft. “Why are you meeting with her?”

“No reason,” he replied with a smile. “But I have to go.”

He had to visit the Morning Glory Chamber of Commerce to put on a show for the Gongsun family.

    “I see”

She lowered her eyes, her cheeks puffing out slightly. She gently removed his hand from her waist. “If you have things to attend to, you should go. I’m going to meditate.”

He looked at her. She was frowning, her lips pursed, clearly displeased.

He pulled her close, his voice gentle. “Don’t you trust my feelings for you, Ruoxi?”

His words, his warmth… her eyes sparkled, and she looked up at him, speechless.

He gazed at her, his heart pounding.

She was so alluring when she was shy. He couldn’t take his eyes off her.

He leaned down, kissing her softly.

“Do you trust me now?” he whispered.

She blinked, her gaze darting around like a trapped deer. She turned her head away, her voice barely a whisper. “I never said I didn’t.”

She quickly lowered her head, hiding her blushing face.

It seemed a ninth-level Foundation Establishment cultivator was indeed no match for a third-level cultivator… at least, not when it came to Mu Zhi’an.

She fidgeted slightly, feeling awkward, then looked up at him, about to speak, but their eyes met.

She was captivated by his gaze, her lips parting slightly, her heart filled with a mixture of nervousness and anticipation. She closed her eyes, as if waiting for something.

He understood her unspoken plea and kissed her again, deepening the kiss.

Finally, she pushed him away, burying her face in his chest. “Alright, go. Attend to your business. I need to meditate.”

He looked at her, his voice serious. “There’s no need. A cultivator knows no laziness, even during the day.”

She rolled her eyes, then asked after a moment, “Won’t this waste your time?”

For some reason, his intense gaze made her feel flustered. She clutched her skirt nervously.

He smiled, his expression solemn. “To help you reach Core Formation… no effort is wasted. It’s all worth it, Ruoxi.”

Half an hour later, he was sitting in front of a mirror, combing his hair.

He glanced at her. She was lying in bed, seemingly asleep, her face hidden beneath the blankets.

    “I’m leaving,” he said.

    She didn’t answer, remaining motionless.

After a moment, a muffled “Mmm…” came from beneath the blankets.

He left the room, feeling refreshed and invigorated, and ordered a carriage to take him to the Morning Glory Chamber of Commerce.

  • It turns out, they are the protagonists 58

Chapter 58: Activating the “Manipulate Enemy” Quick-Play Spell!

Mu Zhi’an went back to his room, adjusted his robes, styled his hair, and then headed towards the main hall.

It wasn’t about impressing a girl. He was representing the Mu family, after all. He had to maintain a certain image.

Besides, he preferred mature women to younger ones.

They were more understanding, more forgiving, more… accommodating.

He entered the hall, but instead of the sweet and innocent Ye Qian, he saw another young woman.

If he remembered correctly, she was also from the Ye family… Ye Lingxuan, was it?

She wore a light purple robe, her figure slender yet subtly alluring, her skirt adorned with violet patterns. Her hair was held in place by a simple jade hairpin, a single strand escaping to caress her cheek.

Although she was still young, her beauty was undeniable. She would blossom into a captivating woman.

The Ye family had another beauty like this?

    He was surprised.

She was even more beautiful than Ye Qian. Once she matured, she might even rival Bai Ruoxi.

“Ye Qian is unwell today, so I came in her stead. I hope you don’t mind, Young Master Mu,” Ye Lingxuan said, turning to face him, a sweet smile gracing her lips.

She’s wary of me. Despite her smile, he sensed her guardedness.

She was still young, and she couldn’t fully conceal her suspicion.

“Health is paramount. Is Miss Ye Qian alright?” he asked, smiling warmly.

He sat down across from her, gesturing for a servant to serve them tea.

She nodded. “She needs some rest. She’ll recover soon.”

She lifted her hand, and he noticed a simple yet elegant ring on her finger.

    A Profound-grade storage ring?

No, it was an Earth-grade ring. The Ye family possessed such a treasure?

She retrieved a beautifully crafted sandalwood box from the ring and placed it on the table.

“This is the payment for the Foundation Establishment Pill, including the cost of the ingredients and your labor.”

He opened the box, then chuckled, shaking his head. “The payment for the pill is enough. There’s no need for additional compensation.”

“You’re aware that Elder Ren from my family is an alchemist, aren’t you? Refining a Foundation Establishment Pill is a trivial matter for him.”

He took half the Spirit Stones, then returned the box to her.

    She frowned slightly.

She had offered double the payment to avoid putting Ye Qian in his debt. She was worried he might try to exploit the situation, taking advantage of her friend’s naivety.

However, seeing his warm smile and sincere eyes, she couldn’t refuse. She accepted the box, storing it in her ring.

After a moment of silence, she spoke, her voice soft yet firm. “Young Master Mu, Qian’er is a pure and innocent girl. Please don’t bother her.”

He chuckled, amused by her protectiveness. “I’ve never forced myself on anyone. You seem to have a misunderstanding about me.”

“I’m not interested in your past behavior,” she replied, her tone cool. “However, you lured Brother Ye Yu to the Dragon Head Forest and used him to eliminate one of the Northern Region’s Seventh Seat’s demon cultivators. That’s a fact, isn’t it?”

He tensed, taking a sip of tea to mask his surprise. He studied her, his eyes narrowed slightly.

She knew about the Seventh Seat. She was more than just a simple young mistress.

The Ye family was a second-rate force in Tianxuan City. Only he and Bai Yuanfeng knew about the Seventh Seat.

How had she obtained this information?

“I’m not interested in demons or the Seventh Seat, Young Master Mu. Your motives are irrelevant to me,” she continued, her voice calm and measured. “I simply ask that you leave Qian’er alone.”

“And if possible, avoid any further conflict with Brother Ye Yu.”

Your “Brother Ye Yu” is obsessed with me! He’s the one who keeps provoking me! He sees me and it’s always: Let’s duel! Loser calls the other “Daddy”!

He smiled pleasantly. “I’m afraid that’s not entirely up to me. If you’ve investigated me, you know I’ve never initiated a conflict with Young Master Ye.”

She frowned, knowing he was telling the truth.

She had investigated him, learning about his past encounters with Ye Yu. Each time, it was Ye Yu who had initiated the conflict.

    They were in the wrong.

However, she didn’t care about Ye Yu.

She just wanted to protect Ye Qian.

They had grown up together. She was like a younger sister to her.

And as an older sister, she had to look after her.

As for Ye Yu, she would help him if she could, but if not… there was nothing she could do.

They had been estranged since he became a “cripple.”

It wasn’t that she or Ye Qian had refused to interact with him. He had become withdrawn, refusing to communicate with anyone.

He had only recently emerged from his self-imposed isolation, after regaining his talent.

But he seemed to believe that they had abandoned him during his difficult times, that their renewed attention was simply flattery. He often treated them with indifference.

He didn’t understand that it was his own withdrawal that had caused the distance between them.

No one had looked down on him.

He had looked down on himself.

She wanted him to be happy, but he had become fixated on his broken engagement, spiraling back into self-pity.

His constant emotional turmoil was tiring.

“If Miss Bai hadn’t broken off the engagement, Brother Ye Yu wouldn’t be like this,” she said suddenly.

Mu Zhi’an scoffed. “If you were my fiancée, and you despised me, would you marry me or break off the engagement?”

It was easy to judge others.

But when faced with a similar situation, would they make the same “correct” choices?

She fell silent, pondering his words.

Finally, she spoke, her gaze fixed on her teacup. “I apologize. I was being simplistic.”

Bai Ruoxi’s marriage had been arranged when she was a child. Now that she was older, she had chosen to break off the engagement… Was she wrong?

Perhaps, but if she were in Bai Ruoxi’s shoes, she would have done the same.

Every girl dreamed of a loving relationship. No one wanted to be forced into a marriage they didn’t want, to spend their life with someone they didn’t love.

    She understood now.

One of the reasons she had disliked Mu Zhi’an was because of Bai Ruoxi’s broken engagement.

But now… she realized that Bai Ruoxi’s actions were understandable.

She looked up at him, her eyes sincere. “I’ve learned a lot today, Young Master Mu. I have some errands to run. I’ll visit again another time.”

She had expected him to be a shallow and arrogant playboy, as the rumors suggested, but he was different.

He had been kind, considerate… like a friendly older brother.

He smiled. “I’ll escort you out.”

She was still wary of him, but her hostility had lessened.

    It was a good start.

He watched her leave, then, after a moment of thought, retrieved a snow lotus from a nearby vase and followed her.

He caught up to her at the manor’s entrance, placing the flower in her hand.

She looked up at him, surprised.

He smiled. “Don’t worry about owing me a favor, Miss Ye. The snow lotus symbolizes loyalty and purity. I simply thought it suited you.”

It wasn’t a romantic gesture. It was a genuine compliment.

    No one disliked compliments.

Her expression softened, and she nodded, accepting the flower. She descended the steps gracefully and entered her carriage.

He watched as the carriage departed, then turned and headed back inside.

She was intelligent and cautious. Flirtation or overt displays of affection would only make her more suspicious.

But a subtle approach, like water seeping into stone… she wouldn’t resist.

    Her hostility had lessened.

And if she was this wary… what about Ye Qian?

He had to be patient, taking things slowly.

Besides, he wasn’t interested in the younger girl. He simply wanted to uncover the forces behind Ye Lingxuan.

Her knowledge, her demeanor, her subtle warnings… she was more than just a Ye family disciple.

Lost in thought, he walked past the lotus pond, then paused. He picked a snow lotus and headed towards Bai Ruoxi’s room.

  • It turns out, they are the protagonists 57

    Chapter 57: Ye Lingxuan’s Visit

Deep in the silent night, at the Gongsun Manor.

Gongsun Xiong slowly opened his eyes, pain throbbing through his body. He clutched his chest, turning his head with difficulty to address his confidant. “What’s the situation outside?”

Confined to his bed, he relied on others for information.

He wished he could make himself invisible, forgotten by everyone, until he recovered.

The Mu and Bai families were circling like predators, the Morning Glory Chamber of Commerce lurking in the shadows, seeking to profit from his weakness, and his own family members eyeing his position as head of the clan.

    He was surrounded by enemies.

“Master, since the Bai family head returned, they’ve been regaining their lost ground. They’re reclaiming their territory,” his confidant reported.

    Gongsun Xiong nodded grimly.

He was frustrated, but he couldn’t do anything in his current state. He had to turn a blind eye for now.

“The entrance exams are in a few days. How are Cheng’er’s preparations going?” he asked.

His confidant hesitated, then spoke cautiously. “Fourth Young Master, he was injured in a fight at the sparring arena today.”

Gongsun Xiong’s eyes narrowed. “Who in Tianxuan City would dare attack my son? Which Core Formation expert had the audacity?”

Gongsun Cheng was one of the strongest among his generation. He naturally assumed it was a Core Formation cultivator who had injured his son.

However, his confidant’s next words stunned him.

“It was… it was the Bai family’s young mistress” he stammered.

He didn’t mention that Gongsun Cheng had been defeated with a single strike.

“Bai Ruoxi?” Gongsun Xiong exhaled slowly, his voice laced with anger. “The Bai family dares to be so arrogant? They’ve barely recovered!”

“The Mu family’s young master was with her… People said they were quite affectionate at the arena”

    Gongsun Xiong froze.

Then, realization dawned on him, and he murmured, “This is bad”

His confidant was about to ask what he meant when Gongsun Xiong slammed his fist against the bed, his rage erupting.

    “That incompetent fool!”

If it had been any other time, a fight between Bai Ruoxi and Gongsun Cheng wouldn’t have been a problem. But at this critical juncture.

They weren’t just attacking his family. They were also taking his money.

Mu Zhi’an was sending a clear message: The Mu and Bai families were now allies. Think carefully before acting against them.

And tomorrow… they would probably demand “compensation” for his son’s injuries.

And that compensation… it wouldn’t be a few thousand Spirit Stones.

The next morning, at the Mu Manor.

Mu Zhi’an, refreshed after a night of meditation in Bai Ruoxi’s room, opened his eyes.

His spiritual energy had increased significantly. While it wasn’t as dramatic as Bai Ruoxi’s progress, he was satisfied.

He glanced at her. She was sitting on the bed, her eyes closed, her breathing slow and even.

She wore a loose white robe, her face serene in the morning light.

From this angle, she seemed like a normal young woman, but he knew the truth… the treasures hidden beneath that robe.

He had witnessed them several times, and last night he had experienced their warmth firsthand.

    He was still… slightly unsatisfied.

He didn’t consider himself a pervert. He simply preferred to appreciate beauty up close.

Her clothes were neatly folded on a nearby rack, a pair of white socks beside them, a white ribbon swaying gently in the breeze.

Seeing that she was still meditating, he quietly left the room.

He could sense her aura, stronger than before. She was almost at the peak of Foundation Establishment.

But he… he was still at the third level.

He was giving others buffs and experience points, but he wasn’t gaining anything himself. It was a terrible deal. He was probably the most selfless person in the world.

    He sighed inwardly.

He was putting in so much effort, all to help her reach Core Formation.

But it was alright. He was a helpful person.

He left the room and saw Wei Mengrou standing in the courtyard, her back to him, her figure slender and graceful, seemingly lost in thought.

    He was used to it.

He often woke up to find her like this, silent and contemplative, always completing her tasks efficiently.

She turned to face him, and he waved, smiling. “Mengrou, let’s spar. It’ll be good exercise.”

    She nodded silently.

Then, as she drew her sword, she said, “Oh, and…”

    He looked at her, confused.

“Next time, control your volume. I could hear you from next door”

She blushed slightly, losing her usual composure.

He blinked, then his eyes widened in realization.

Damn. I forgot. Wherever I am, she’s always nearby. She was in the next room.

He maintained his smile, feigning innocence. “Ruoxi and I were just cultivating. Did you misunderstand something, Mengrou?”

She scoffed, giving him a look that said: You know exactly what you were doing.

But for some reason, her disdain was oddly exciting.

After sparring with her for a while, a servant approached. “Young Master, a disciple from the Ye family is here to see you. Should I let her in?”

Ye Qian must have been worried about the Foundation Establishment Pill. She was here to pay him back.

He wasn’t surprised. Judging by her innocent demeanor, he knew she would take it seriously.

He sheathed his sword, nodding. “Escort her to the main hall and offer her some tea. I’ll be there shortly.”

  • It turns out, they are the protagonists 56

Chapter 56: Mu Zhi’an: Ninth Level of Foundation Establishment? Easy!

After having the servants prepare a room for Bai Ruoxi, Mu Zhi’an personally escorted her to the guest quarters.

She followed behind him, her white dress swaying gracefully with each step.

“I’ve stayed at the Mu Manor before. You don’t need to escort me. Attend to your duties,” she said softly, glancing up at him.

He shook his head firmly. “Absolutely not. You’re a guest in our home. If I didn’t treat you with proper hospitality, my parents would scold me.”

    She frowned slightly, studying him.

She sensed an ulterior motive, but she couldn’t bring herself to dismiss him, afraid of hurting his feelings.

She sighed inwardly and continued to follow him.

He led her to a quiet and secluded room in the back garden. He opened the door, smiling. “This will be your room. You can use the Heavenly Dao Aura here without worry. No one will disturb you.”

She nodded and entered the room. After pouring him a cup of tea, she said, her voice laced with concern, “I wonder how my parents are doing…”

She’s feeling insecure… He smiled gently. “Don’t worry. I sent a letter to your father. If they disapproved, they would have sent someone to retrieve you by now.”

    She relaxed slightly, nodding.

Then, recalling the events of the day, she asked, “What about Gongsun Cheng?”

The Bai family was on the verge of a resurgence. She was worried that the conflict with Gongsun Cheng would jeopardize their progress.

Sometimes, even the strongest individuals were held back by fear and uncertainty. If not for Mu Zhi’an, she wouldn’t have injured him so severely.

He swirled his tea, looking at her. “If you were so worried about the Bai family, why did you attack him?”

She hesitated, her cheeks flushing slightly.

Finally, she spoke, her voice barely a whisper. “You were behind me…”

If she hadn’t intervened, he would have been injured.

She couldn’t allow that to happen.

She didn’t regret injuring Gongsun Cheng.

But he was the Gongsun family’s top genius. He had been humiliated today. What if they retaliated?

He set down his cup, smiling. “Don’t worry. He’s not important enough to affect the bigger picture. To the Gongsun family, he’s just a talented cultivator… nothing more.”

    Yes… just a talented cultivator.

No matter how skilled or intelligent he was, he couldn’t influence the overall situation.

The Gongsun family was in turmoil. They wouldn’t risk provoking another conflict.

Gongsun Xiong was probably hoping they would forget about him, allowing him to recover in peace.

However, despite his reassurances, she still seemed worried.

Of course he wasn’t concerned. Even if Gongsun Xiong was at his peak, he wouldn’t dare openly retaliate against the Mu family, the most powerful force in Tianxuan City.

But the Bai family was different.

With Lan Mulian in Tianxuan City, Bai Yuanfeng wouldn’t risk exposing her demonic identity.

And the Bai family’s Core Formation experts were… limited.

What if the Gongsun family seized this opportunity to strike?

He looked at her, a mischievous glint in his eyes. “Ruoxi, imagine this… someone confesses their love for you, then kisses you in public. What would happen?”

She blinked, pondering his question. “Everyone would know…?”

The news that Tianxuan City’s most beautiful woman had a lover… it would be a shock to many.

It might not spread throughout the entire city, but the young cultivators would certainly gossip.

Then, realization dawned on her, and she stared at him, her eyes wide. “You did that… to send a message to the Gongsun family?”

“Partly,” he replied. “There’s another reason. Guess.”

She thought for a moment, then shook her head. “I can’t.”

He retrieved a bronze mirror and placed it in front of her.

The mirror reflected her beauty, her white dress with its delicate embroidery, her alluring figure, her long, dark hair framing her face, her aloof yet delicate aura.

“Do you understand now?” he asked.

She frowned, then blushed, realizing his meaning, her gaze downcast. “No”

He was implying that he couldn’t resist her beauty.

She couldn’t bring herself to say it out loud.

He took her hand, his voice soft. “The Heavenly Dao Aura can only refine the spiritual energy around its owner. If I want to meditate, I need to be near you. Can I stay in your room tonight?”

She blinked, looking up at him, surprised.

His eyes were sincere, his expression earnest. “I’ll just meditate. I won’t do anything… inappropriate.”

“Besides, you’re at the ninth level of Foundation Establishment. Could I even overpower you?”

He had a point. The difference between their cultivation levels was significant. Her bronze sword could be used at least three times, and each strike was devastating.

She was at least three times stronger than him.

She pondered for a moment, then sighed. “If you misbehave… I can’t guarantee I won’t accidentally unleash my sword.”

Her words were a threat, but they lacked conviction.

    He nodded, accepting her terms.

He sat down on the floor near the foot of the bed, while she removed her socks and sat on the bed, retrieving the Heavenly Dao Aura.

Soon, the room was filled with refined spiritual energy.

She felt a movement beside her and opened her eyes to see him sitting next to her.

    She hesitated, but didn’t object.

The floor was cold. It was understandable.

But then, she felt his breath on her cheek and opened her eyes again to see him staring at her.

She blushed, her voice trembling slightly. “What is it now?”

“Simply absorbing spiritual energy seems inefficient. I’m an Inborn Celestial Vessel. Perhaps we should try a different method” he murmured, his gaze fixed on her face.

She seemed to understand his meaning, her eyes downcast, her expression unreadable.

He placed his hands on her shoulders, his voice gentle. “If you don’t like it, just push me away.”

He leaned down, pressing her gently against the bed.

Her lashes fluttered, and she peeked at him.

After a moment, she wrapped her arms around his neck.

He couldn’t resist kissing her, then whispered near her ear, a mischievous glint in his eyes, “What do you think people would say… if they knew a ninth-level Foundation Establishment cultivator was dominated by a mere third-level cultivator?”

Her heart skipped a beat. She clutched her skirt, her back pressing against the bed, her face turned away from him.

She had fallen into his trap.

Because… it seemed she truly couldn’t resist him.

    Chapter 55: Bai Ruoxi’s Fall

    “Huang Manting wins!”

Upon hearing the announcement, Lan Mulian rose to her feet and quietly departed.

If not for Bai Ruoxi’s earlier display of power, Huang Manting’s performance would have been impressive.

But after witnessing such overwhelming strength, even the most skilled techniques seemed… ordinary in comparison.

A prolonged battle versus a single, decisive strike… the visual impact was undeniable.

Huang Manting stepped down from the platform, her gaze drawn to the bench where Lan Mulian had been sitting.

    The examiner was gone.

It was understandable. After witnessing Bai Ruoxi’s power, the other practice matches would seem lackluster.

“Miss Huang, with your current strength, you’re among the top three in Tianxuan City!” a young man said, approaching her with a smile.

“Top three? Aside from the Bai family’s young mistress, you’re undoubtedly the strongest among our generation!” another chimed in.

Previously, the consensus had been that Huang Manting was the strongest, followed by Gongsun Cheng, then Bai Ruoxi.

However, Bai Ruoxi’s performance had shattered their expectations.

Only a Core Formation expert could withstand the power of that sword.

Huang Manting glanced at her admirers, her voice languid. “We haven’t faced each other yet. It’s too early to say.”

Bai Ruoxi’s bronze sword was indeed formidable, but if she could avoid it, she believed she could win.

Gongsun Cheng had been arrogant, blinded by rage.

She wouldn’t make the same mistake. She wouldn’t face that sword head-on.

However, she was surprised by Mu Zhi’an’s relationship with Bai Ruoxi.

Bai Ruoxi had always ignored him, treating him with disdain.

Yet he had finally won her over.

And judging by her reaction, she had fallen deeply in love.

    “Mu Zhi’an…”

    Huang Manting’s eyes narrowed thoughtfully.

How had a third-level Foundation Establishment cultivator managed to capture Bai Ruoxi’s heart?

    Was it simply his looks?

There were plenty of handsome men pursuing her. It couldn’t be that simple.

She dismissed her admirers with a wave of her hand, then turned to a subordinate. “Investigate Mu Zhi’an. Find out when and where he interacted with Bai Ruoxi.”

Knowledge was power. Whether it was Bai Ruoxi or Mu Zhi’an, she would claim that inner disciple spot.

    Mu Manor.

After returning to the manor with Bai Ruoxi, Mu Zhi’an sent a letter to the Bai family, informing them that she would be staying with him for a few days, until the entrance exams. He then instructed a servant to escort her to the side hall for tea.

He excused himself and headed towards his study.

His actions at the arena hadn’t been a problem, unless Lan Mulian had been observing them from the tea house.

He hadn’t expected to be seen. Based on his initial assessment, she was the type who preferred solitude, who wouldn’t venture out so soon after arriving.

And that tea room with the excellent view… only Tianxuan City’s elite knew about it. How had she found it?

Ever since her arrival, he’d felt a sense of unease.

She had chosen the luxurious Rising Phoenix Inn, then she had gone to the tea house, finding that specific room.

    Was she from Tianxuan City?

Or did she have friends here?

Lost in thought, he arrived at his study.

He pushed open the door and saw two paper cranes on his desk.

He opened the first crane, finding a single sentence written on the paper: Young Master Mu, the Two Polarities Sect is different from other places. If you remain at Foundation Establishment for too long, it will be difficult to become an inner disciple. Cultivate diligently. Strive for a brighter future.

It was a message of concern, from a senior to a junior. It must have been sent yesterday.

Judging by her attitude today, she wouldn’t send him a letter now.

He picked up his brush and wrote a reply: Thank you for your concern, Senior Sister. I will cultivate diligently and strive to reach your level so I can always be by your side. By the way, the osmanthus cake from the Tide Sea Inn in Tianxuan City is quite delicious. If you’re free in the next few days, I’d like to bring you some.

He released the crane, then opened the second letter.

“The snow lotus was lovely. I enjoyed its fragrance. Unfortunately, it wilted soon after arriving.”

    He frowned, confused.

The snow lotus had been perfectly healthy when he gave it to her. He had even seen it in a vase in her room. He shook his head, dismissing those thoughts, and began writing another heartfelt letter.

He had realized that Lan Mulian wasn’t as cold and aloof as he’d initially thought. In fact, she was quite responsive.

Based on his previous understanding of her, she wouldn’t have complimented the snow lotus so directly. But she had clearly expressed her appreciation.

This meant he could be more forward in expressing his “affection.”

He finished writing, then released the cranes, watching with satisfaction as they soared into the sky.

He left his study and headed towards the side hall.

However, he didn’t notice that as the cranes flew away, one headed towards the Rising Phoenix Inn, while the other… flew out of the city gates.

    Bai Manor, main hall.

“Master, Madam, a letter from the Mu Manor.”

A servant presented a letter to Bai Heng, then retreated.

Bai Heng opened the letter, his brow furrowing as he read its contents.

“Preposterous! Leaving her own home to stay at another man’s manor! And until the entrance exams?! Has she lost her mind?!”

Bai Yuanfeng set down her teacup, her voice calm. “This must be Mu Zhi’an’s doing… Ruoxi is a sensible girl. She wouldn’t make such a decision on her own.”

Bai Heng’s face turned red with anger. He felt like his precious daughter had been stolen. He slammed his fist on the table, splintering the wood, collapsing the legs.

The servants outside gasped, staring at him in fear.

Bai Yuanfeng, seemingly unfazed, waved them away. “It’s nothing. You’re dismissed.”

After the servants left, she looked at her husband, sighing. “Husband, don’t you find it strange… how that Mu boy discovered my secret?”

    The simple warrior was clueless.

“Within the Bai Manor, the barrier conceals my demonic aura. And even outside, unless someone is at Nascent Soul, they wouldn’t be able to detect it amidst the impure spiritual energy.”

She crossed her legs, her voice a soft murmur. “But there are exceptions.”

“That Ye boy, his Heavenly Dao Aura, it purifies the surrounding energy.”

“And when the impure energy is gone… my aura becomes visible.”

Bai Heng calmed down, pondering her words. “Are you saying that Mu Zhi’an has the Heavenly Dao Aura?”

He quickly shook his head. “Impossible. Gongsun Xiong and the others checked him. If he had it, they would have sensed it.”

Refining the aura took time. At the Dragon Head Forest, there hadn’t been enough time.

“What if… it’s not with him?” Bai Yuanfeng asked.

“You mean… the one who stole the aura is hiding at the Bai Manor, trying to expose you?” Bai Heng frowned. “But to infiltrate the manor undetected, is that even possible?”

She glanced at him, her voice laced with exasperation. “Our daughter is staying at the manor. Why would she need to hide?”

    “Well, she wouldn’t—”

He froze, finally understanding. “Are you saying… Mu Zhi’an gave the aura to Ruoxi?”

“It’s the only explanation. It’s why my aura was exposed,” she replied.

His expression softened, a hint of approval in his eyes. “What’s that boy up to? Giving away such a treasure…”

He chuckled. “If that’s the case. I wouldn’t mind entrusting Ruoxi to him.”

To give away the Heavenly Dao Aura, it was a testament to his affection for their daughter.

It was a shame his cultivation was so low. If he was at the ninth level of Foundation Establishment, like Ruoxi… they would be a perfect match.

He couldn’t help but feel a pang of regret.

“By the way, the Bai family can’t absorb all of the Gongsun family’s assets,” Bai Yuanfeng said suddenly.

“But you said you gave Gongsun Xiong the Meridian Connecting Pill,” Bai Heng replied, confused.

“He’ll be injured, but… the task of seizing his assets, it falls to the Mu family. And we’ll assist them.”

Before he could speak, she continued, “We can’t confuse Mu Zhi’an’s debt to the Bai family with his affection for Ruoxi.”

The Bai family was one thing. Bai Ruoxi was another.

They could certainly try to leverage their daughter’s relationship to gain an advantage, but it would taint their connection, turning it into a transaction.

It was better to… indirectly “gift” the Meridian Connecting Pill to the Mu family.

Just as Mu Zhi’an had said to Bai Ruoxi.

The Bai family would offer something of value to the Mu family, and the Mu family would save them.

The profits from the Gongsun family, that was the “gift.”

The Bai family had fulfilled their promise.

However, they hadn’t just given away a fortune. They had also given away their daughter’s heart.

    Chapter 54: Classic Multitasking

“Ye Yu’s luck is truly remarkable. His fiancée breaks off the engagement, and a cousin appears… What’s next? An older cousin? A childhood friend?” Mu Zhi’an murmured, leaning back in his chair, his gaze fixed on the two cultivators sparring in the arena.

He had to admit, Ye Yu was surrounded by beautiful women.

But unfortunately, he was too fixated on his former fiancée to notice his cousin’s affection. That Ye Qian… she was quite lovely.

“What did you say to Ye Qian?” Bai Ruoxi asked softly, turning to look at him.

She had witnessed their interaction from afar. While she didn’t know what he’d said, judging by Ye Qian’s flustered expression, it must have been something… flirtatious.

Mu Zhi’an chuckled. “Nothing much. Just being helpful.”

“So you gave her a Foundation Establishment Pill?” she asked, her tone slightly accusatory.

She saw that too? “I didn’t give it to her. I simply sold it to her at cost.”

Bai Ruoxi frowned, unconvinced. “Selling it at cost, it’s practically the same as giving it to her.”

Alchemists were a rare breed in this world.

Typically, the cost of commissioning an alchemist to refine a pill was equal to the cost of the ingredients themselves.

Even in a bustling city like Tianxuan City, there were only a handful of alchemists.

She was right. Selling the pill to Ye Qian at cost was essentially a gift.

“Why would you do that? You and Ye Yu are rivals. Do you like her?”

She lowered her eyes, her long lashes casting shadows on her cheeks, her expression unreadable.

Why do I feel like she’s about to draw her sword? “Ruoxi, have you heard the saying…” Mu Zhi’an began.

She looked up at him, her eyes regaining their usual sparkle.

He continued, “The most expensive things are free.”

    She frowned, still confused.

He didn’t elaborate, simply squeezing her hand gently. “You’ll be staying at the Mu Manor, won’t you? You’ll understand soon enough.”

If it was something worthless, he wouldn’t mind giving it away.

But a Foundation Establishment Pill, it was a valuable commodity.

Some things might seem free, but their price, it was always hidden.

Seeing her continued uncertainty, he leaned in close, his voice a low whisper. “Just know this… for now, you’re the only one I need.”

She blushed, her gaze downcast, a soft “Mmm” escaping her lips.

She’s surprisingly shy for someone so aloof. He smiled, admiring her beauty.

Suddenly, they felt countless gazes upon them, filled with surprise and curiosity.

They know about us… why are they still surprised? It seemed the allure of Tianxuan City’s most beautiful woman was difficult to resist.

Mu Zhi’an ignored their stares, smiling politely before turning back to the sparring arena.

But then, he felt a chill run down his spine.

A coldness that seemed to seep into his very bones.

They’re not looking at us. He followed their gazes and saw Lan Mulian, her face veiled, her expression as cold and aloof as ever, sitting behind them, observing the practice matches.

Feiying, her figure alluring in her red cheongsam, sat in a corner, her legs crossed, her gaze seemingly fixed on the arena, but her attention was clearly on Mu Zhi’an.

She didn’t want the people of Tianxuan City to know about her relationship with her sister. Firstly, she didn’t want to attract opportunists. And secondly, she didn’t want to be compared to her sister.

Of course, she wasn’t actively hiding their connection. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have accompanied Lan Mulian today.

    What is she doing here?

“Senior Sister, when did you arrive?” Mu Zhi’an asked, surprised.

“The entrance exams are approaching. I wanted to observe the candidates. I arrived early this morning,” Lan Mulian replied calmly.

As an examiner, it was understandable for her to assess the potential disciples.

Mu Zhi’an nodded, then his smile faltered as realization dawned on him.

He stared at her, his voice a strained whisper. “How long have you been here?”

She pondered for a moment, a hint of amusement in her eyes. “Longer than you.”

So she saw everything. But where was she sitting?

“Why didn’t I see you earlier?” he asked, still clinging to a sliver of hope.

If he had known she was nearby, he wouldn’t have been so affectionate with Bai Ruoxi, at least, not in public.

“There’s a tea house nearby with a good view of the arena,” she replied.

He knew the tea house. He had frequented it in the past, enjoying the view from its private rooms.

He hadn’t expected Lan Mulian to be familiar with Tianxuan City’s attractions.

He struggled to maintain his smile.

However, she didn’t seem to care about his earlier behavior. She looked at the woman in the arena, her voice cool. “Is that the temptress from the Morning Glory Chamber of Commerce? Huang Manting?”

Mu Zhi’an, gathering his thoughts, looked up to see a beautiful woman in a black dress sparring with another cultivator. The dress accentuated her pale skin, lending her an alluring charm.

    He nodded. “That’s Huang Manting.”

He had met her once, but they weren’t acquainted.

Lan Mulian studied her for a moment, then nodded. “She has decent talent.”

She paused, then added, “But in terms of talent… Miss Bai seems to be superior.”

Considering Bai Ruoxi’s recent performance, it was understandable for her to say that.

Normally, he would have taken it as a genuine compliment, but for some reason, he felt a hint of something else in her words.

Bai Ruoxi turned to Lan Mulian, a smile gracing her lips. “I’m honored to receive your praise, Senior Sister. But I owe everything to Young Master Mu.”

Lan Mulian looked at Mu Zhi’an, intrigued. “It seems you’re quite generous, Young Master Mu, despite your own low cultivation. You went to the Two Polarities Sect that night to acquire a herb for someone, wasn’t it?”

    He smiled, but didn’t answer.

He had never felt so much pressure before.

Bai Ruoxi gently took his arm, looking up at Lan Mulian. “If you’re interested, Senior Sister, we can chat at the Mu Manor. I’ll be staying there for a while.”

Lan Mulian raised an eyebrow, her lips curving into a faint smile. “I’d like that.”

Mu Zhi’an, bathed in the warm sunlight, felt a chill run down his spine.

He could outsmart demons, he could manipulate the Gongsun family, he could even predict their thoughts… but these two women… he couldn’t decipher their intentions, their subtle games.

Women were far more complex than demons or power-hungry cultivators.

“Senior Sister, it’s getting late. I have some errands to run. I’ll contact you later through a paper crane,” Mu Zhi’an said, deciding to leave before things got any more complicated.

Being affectionate with Bai Ruoxi had been enjoyable.., but now it was torture.

Lan Mulian didn’t even look at him, simply nodding curtly.

He smiled politely and left the arena.

A carriage was waiting for him. He climbed inside, and Bai Ruoxi followed, ducking her head slightly as she entered.

    They sat in silence.

As the carriage began to move, Bai Ruoxi spoke softly, her voice tinged with an emotion he couldn’t quite identify. “That Senior Sister seems to care for you.”

It sounded as if she were asking: Are you having a secret affair with her?

He reached for her hand, but she pulled away.

Inside the carriage, he had no need for pretense. He simply wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her close.

She leaned against him, her expression a mixture of annoyance and resignation.

“What’s your relationship with her?” she asked, her eyes searching his face.

He sighed. “I told you before, didn’t I? I needed the King Beast Vine to refine the medicine for your father. She gave it to me.”

She gave him the King Beast Vine, they must be very close. Bai Ruoxi closed her eyes, then forced a smile, her voice soft and sweet. “She’s so kind to you… I wish I could be of more help”

He tightened his grip on her waist, his voice a low murmur near her ear. “Simply being with me… it’s enough.”

His warmth, his gentle words… she melted against him, her earlier annoyance fading.

He enjoyed her softness, her intoxicating fragrance, but his mind was elsewhere. He looked out the window, watching the city pass by, a sigh escaping his lips.

Both Lan Mulian and Bai Ruoxi were intelligent and perceptive women. He was starting to worry that his multitasking would backfire.

    Ye Manor.

Ye Qian, clutching the delicate box, hurried back to her room, Mu Zhi’an’s warm smile replaying in her mind.

Her elders had always warned her about the Mu family’s young master, claiming he was a villain, a scoundrel, but he hadn’t seemed like a bad person at all. He had been kind, gentle.

The contrast between Ye Yu’s coldness earlier and Mu Zhi’an’s warmth… it was striking.

I’ll deliver the payment tomorrow morning. She quickened her pace, but as she reached her room, she saw Ye Yu approaching.

    “Cousin,” she greeted him brightly.

His expression had softened, as if he’d calmed down since leaving the arena. “Qian’er, bring the ingredients for the Foundation Establishment Pill to my room later.”

He wanted to apologize for his earlier coldness, but his pride wouldn’t allow it.

Refining a pill for her, it was an indirect apology.

However, she hesitated, then politely declined. “It’s alright, Cousin. Thank you for the offer.”

She walked past him, clutching the box.

He frowned, watching her go. She was a beautiful young woman, her long hair flowing down her back, her figure slender and graceful.

She was probably unaware of the true cost of a Foundation Establishment Pill. She would regret her decision tomorrow, once she visited the auction house.

As he entered his room, Ye Qian arrived at hers, but she paused, seeing another young woman standing outside.

She wore a light purple robe, a thin ribbon cinched around her waist, accentuating her graceful curves. She had a delicate face, a warm smile on her lips, her aura elegant and captivating.

“Lingxuan, what a coincidence,” Ye Qian said, smiling.

Ye Lingxuan was considered the Ye family’s second most talented cultivator, but having grown up together, Ye Qian knew the truth. Her friend was the true genius.

However, Ye Lingxuan was humble and disliked competition. The other disciples only remembered her beauty, overlooking her extraordinary talent.

Ye Lingxuan nodded, then glanced at the box in Ye Qian’s hand, her brow furrowing slightly. “Did Brother Ye Yu refine a Foundation Establishment Pill for you already?”

Ye Qian hesitated for a moment, then decided to be honest. “He didn’t… The young master of the Mu family sold it to me… at cost.”

Ye Lingxuan frowned. “The Mu family’s young master… Mu Zhi’an?”

That Mu Zhi’an, he wasn’t a good person. Why would he be so generous?

“Did you pay him?” she asked softly, her voice laced with concern.

Ye Qian shook her head. “I’m planning to deliver the payment tomorrow.”

“He’s not a good person, Qian’er,” Ye Lingxuan said, her voice low. “I’ll go to the Mu Manor tomorrow instead.”

Ye Qian was too naive. She was worried that something might happen.

Perhaps Mu Zhi’an would exploit his family’s influence and try to take advantage of her.

It was safer for her to go.

Others might fear the Mu family, but… she didn’t.

  • It turns out, they are the protagonists 53

    Chapter 53: Be Envious!

A single strike had shattered Gongsun Cheng’s Golden Bell Shield!

Even though Mu Zhi’an knew Bai Ruoxi was powerful, he was still taken aback.

He knew the bronze sword amplified her strength, but he hadn’t expected it to be this potent.

    “Young Master, are you alright?”

Two servants rushed to Gongsun Cheng’s side, helping him to his feet.

He clutched his chest, his spiritual energy in turmoil. He felt humiliated, countless eyes fixed on him, judging him. He glared at Bai Ruoxi, his voice trembling with anger.

“Miss Bai, the Bai family just recovered! Are you trying to provoke another conflict with the Gongsun family?!”

Bai Ruoxi frowned, staring at him silently.

“If you back down now, I’ll pretend this never happened,” he said coldly.

With Bai Heng’s return, the Bai family seemed to be regaining their strength. His words were a thinly veiled attempt to save face, to intimidate them and quell their rising influence.

Seeing her silence, he smirked, about to speak again, when Mu Zhi’an interrupted him, his voice laced with amusement. “Resorting to your family name after being defeated? How pathetic.”

“Do you even represent the Gongsun family?”

The Mu family had only recently granted him authority, and there were still several Core Formation elders in seclusion. If anything happened, they would intervene.

But Gongsun Xiong had six children. Gongsun Cheng was the fourth son. Competition within the family was fierce. He couldn’t possibly speak for the entire Gongsun family.

He was simply bluffing, trying to intimidate them.

“If your father finds out about your behavior, will he break your legs?” Mu Zhi’an asked casually.

Gongsun Xiong was currently focused on recovering from his injuries. If he knew his son had provoked the Mu family’s young master, he would be furious.

Gongsun Cheng understood, but he glared at Mu Zhi’an. “Do you dare face me in a duel, Young Master Mu?”

“I don’t,” Mu Zhi’an replied, spreading his hands.

“Besides, what’s the point? Your eighth level of Foundation Establishment is clearly inflated. Being defeated by someone at the same level… it’s hardly motivating.”

He paused, then added, his tone concerned, “Oh, I have some healing medicine at the manor. I’ll have someone deliver it to you.”

Gongsun Cheng felt a surge of anger, his blood boiling.

“Young Master, calm down. He’s provoking you. Don’t let him get to you,” a servant whispered.

Gongsun Cheng suppressed his rage, his voice cold. “I acknowledge Miss Bai’s strength. She’s probably invincible among her peers. But what does that have to do with you? A third-level Foundation Establishment wastrel – you dare lecture me?”

Mu Zhi’an chuckled, his smile infuriatingly pleasant. “I might not be able to defeat Ruoxi, but you, an eighth-level cultivator, were also defeated with a single strike. What’s the difference between us?”

“We were both humiliated. I could have done just as well or worse.”

Gongsun Cheng’s anger erupted. He glared at Mu Zhi’an, his killing intent barely contained.

    “Besides…”

Mu Zhi’an, seemingly oblivious to his fury, turned to Bai Ruoxi and, to everyone’s astonishment, gently took her hand.

“Ruoxi and I, we don’t have any grudges, do we?” he asked, smiling at her.

All eyes turned to Bai Ruoxi, who blushed slightly, her gaze downcast. But she didn’t pull away, nor did she strike him with her sword, as many had hoped.

She simply allowed him to hold her hand, her voice a soft murmur. “No”

The male cultivators in the arena felt a surge of envy, wishing they were in Mu Zhi’an’s place.

They had suspected a connection between them, but seeing him hold her hand so openly was unbearable. They understood Gongsun Cheng’s rage. They wanted to teach that Mu boy a lesson.

But then, they looked at Bai Ruoxi, remembering her power, and they calmed down, sighing inwardly.

“To break through Gongsun Cheng’s Golden Bell Shield with a single strike, Miss Bai truly is invincible among her peers…”

“Her technique is strange. I doubt she can use it repeatedly, but if she can unleash that sword several times in a battle, who could stand against her?”

“The Bai family might be struggling now, but with her, they have a bright future.”

“I wonder who will win her hand” someone murmured.

“Isn’t it obvious? Look who’s holding her hand.”

The male cultivators fell silent, their envy palpable.

“Why do I suddenly want to punch Mu Zhi’an in the face?” someone whispered, expressing the sentiment shared by many.

“Not just punch him… I want to obliterate that smug look on his face.”

    “Go ahead. Try it.”

“Why don’t *you* try it?” the other retorted.

Bai Ruoxi’s power was undeniable. Even though they suspected she couldn’t use her sword repeatedly, they didn’t know how many times she could unleash it in a single battle.

And besides, attacking the Mu family’s young master in Tianxuan City… it was suicide.

Gongsun Cheng had been reckless, arrogant, believing that the Mu family wouldn’t retaliate against the Gongsun family.

But his arrogance had come at a steep price.

‘Gongsun Cheng, the Gongsun family’s top genius, defeated by Bai Ruoxi with a single strike’ If that story spread, he would be humiliated.

Even if he joined the Two Polarities Sect, it would be a stain on his reputation.

The two Gongsun family servants, realizing they had gained nothing from this encounter, helped Gongsun Cheng to his feet, preparing to leave.

“Oh, Young Master Gongsun,” Mu Zhi’an called out, as if remembering something important. “Instead of meddling in other people’s affairs, perhaps you should focus on your own family.”

Gongsun Cheng paused, turning to face him. “What do you mean?”

“I mean, our individual strength is irrelevant. What matters is the foundation,” Mu Zhi’an replied with a smile.

Your family is crumbling, and you’re worried about a duel with me?

Gongsun Cheng stared at him, a sense of foreboding creeping into his heart.

As he limped away, supported by his servants, Mu Zhi’an turned to the crowd, bowing slightly.

“I apologize for the interruption. Ruoxi and I were simply here to observe the practice matches. We won’t take up any more of your time.”

They bowed back, their responses polite but distant.

He was the Mu family’s young master, after all. They wouldn’t offend him unnecessarily.

Not everyone had a grudge against him, like Gongsun Cheng and Ye Yu.

Although seeing him with Bai Ruoxi… it was difficult not to feel envious.

The practice matches continued, the crowd buzzing with gossip about the recent events.

Ye Yu, whose talent had been the subject of much admiration, was now overshadowed, forgotten.

They no longer marveled at his ability to defeat Foundation Establishment cultivators while still at the peak of Qi Condensation. Their attention was now focused on Bai Ruoxi and Mu Zhi’an.

Compared to her, his talent seemed ordinary.

And a ninth-level Foundation Establishment cultivator with a third-level wastrel, especially if that cultivator was Bai Ruoxi… it was a scandal waiting to happen.

Mu Zhi’an led Bai Ruoxi to a nearby bench, their hands still clasped together. The usually aloof young mistress seemed shy and demure, but only around him.

The sunlight streamed through the trees, casting dappled shadows on the ground. Carriages rumbled along the street, passing by ancient buildings.

Mu Zhi’an leaned back, enjoying the warmth of the sun, his hand still holding hers. He looked at her, a playful smile on his lips. “Ruoxi, are you hiding your tail? Show it to me.”

She blushed, shaking her head. “I don’t have a tail, Young Master Mu. Stop teasing me.”

“I don’t believe you. Show me.”

    She rolled her eyes.

How could she show him? Her ears were visible, but her tail.

“You should stay at the Mu Manor until the entrance exams,” he said suddenly, changing the subject.

He had to be careful with his teasing. He didn’t want to upset her.

    She hesitated. “Why?”

He leaned in close, his voice a low whisper. “The Heavenly Dao Aura purifies the spiritual energy around you. And it also exposes your mother’s demonic aura.”

Her eyes widened, and she turned to face him.

    “Really?”

“How do you think I discovered her secret?”

So that’s how he knew. She nodded silently.

“I’ll stay at the manor then. Thank you.”

She felt his fingers playing with hers, and she blushed, glancing around to make sure no one was watching them.

He was already this bold, and they weren’t even living together yet. What would he do if she stayed at the manor?

She felt a flicker of apprehension.

Oblivious to her concerns, Mu Zhi’an continued to hold her hand, his gaze fixed on the sparring arena, a contented smile on his lips.

“Ye Yu wins!” a clear voice announced.

Mu Zhi’an looked up to see Ye Yu, dressed in black robes, emerging victorious from another practice match. His opponent was a second-level Foundation Establishment cultivator.

He’s stronger than before… Mu Zhi’an thought, intrigued.

Ye Yu noticed him watching and smirked, giving him a thumbs-down.

Afraid to accept a challenge from a mere peak Qi Condensation cultivator. That’s how weak you are, Mu Zhi’an… He didn’t need words to convey his disdain.

Mu Zhi’an simply chuckled at the childish provocation.

He turned to Bai Ruoxi, brushing a strand of hair from her face, and kissed her cheek.

Then, he gave Ye Yu a thumbs-up.

That was how you played the game.

“What was that for?” Bai Ruoxi whispered, her cheeks flushed, her voice a mixture of annoyance and amusement.

“Nothing. You’re just too cute,” he replied, squeezing her hand gently.

Ye Yu froze, staring at them, speechless.

He couldn’t understand why she had chosen Mu Zhi’an over him. Even a blind man could see that his talent was far superior, that his future prospects were brighter.

Yet she preferred Mu Zhi’an. He clenched his fists, a jealous rage burning within him.

“Brother Ye Yu, the elders summoned you. They have something to discuss with you,” a sweet voice called out from the crowd.

Mu Zhi’an looked over to see a lovely young woman, dressed in a light blue robe, a thin belt cinching her waist, her long black hair cascading down her back. She wore deerskin boots, her appearance as youthful and innocent as a college student.

If he remembered correctly, she was Ye Qian, the daughter of the Ye family’s First Elder.

Ye Yu, his mood clearly soured, jumped down from the platform and looked at his cousin. “Do you know what they want?”

She shook her head. “They didn’t say.”

He nodded curtly, turning to leave.

Ye Qian hesitated, then called out, “Brother Ye Yu, you’re an alchemist, right? I’m at the peak of Qi Condensation. Could you refine a Foundation Establishment Pill for me? I’ll pay for the ingredients and your labor.”

He didn’t answer, his voice flat. “We’ll discuss it later.”

Their relationship had been strained during his years as a “cripple.” They had only recently started to interact again. And after being provoked by Mu Zhi’an, he was in no mood for idle chatter.

She watched him go, her head bowed, a flicker of disappointment in her eyes.

If he refused, she would have to ask an alchemist from the Morning Glory Chamber of Commerce…

It would be more expensive, but she needed a Foundation Establishment Pill to ensure a smooth breakthrough.

She sighed, walking towards the Ye Manor, preparing to return home.

But then, a figure stepped in front of her.

He had soft, dark hair, and he was dressed in luxurious robes, his demeanor as gentle and refined as a scholar, a warm smile on his handsome face.

To a young woman like Ye Qian, experiencing her first stirrings of romance, Mu Zhi’an was the embodiment of every fantasy. She stared at him, captivated.

She quickly recovered, shaking her head, her eyes wary. “Young Master Mu, is there something I can help you with?”

She knew her cousin and Mu Zhi’an were rivals, and she was aware of his notorious reputation.

Her elders had warned her repeatedly to avoid him.

She had taken their words to heart, and this was her first direct interaction with him.

He smiled. “Don’t be nervous. My issues with Ye Yu are personal. You don’t need to be so guarded.”

He retrieved a delicate box from his storage ring and offered it to her.

What is this? She frowned, glancing at him, then opened the box.

Inside, a perfectly round pill gleamed in the sunlight. It was a Foundation Establishment Pill!

“I can’t accept this, Young Master Mu,” she said, quickly closing the box and offering it back to him.

He smiled gently. “If you refuse now, you’ll have to acquire the ingredients and find an alchemist yourself. It will be costly and time-consuming. I’m not giving you this pill. I’m simply selling it to you… at cost.”

“You can have someone deliver the payment to the Mu Manor later.”

He doesn’t seem as villainous as the rumors suggest. She looked at his warm smile, his sincere eyes, and hesitated for a moment. Finally, she accepted the pill.

“I didn’t bring any Spirit Stones with me today. I’ll deliver the payment tomorrow.” She bowed slightly, clutching the box, then hurried away.

Her deerskin boots tapped against the ground, her skirt swaying gently in the breeze, revealing a glimpse of her slender legs.

Mu Zhi’an watched her go, a smile spreading across his lips.

Helping others, it was a surprisingly pleasant feeling.

He returned to Bai Ruoxi, sitting down beside her, his gaze sweeping over the sparring arena, a contented sigh escaping his lips.

He teased her occasionally, enjoying the warmth of the sun and the company of a beautiful woman.

    At the tea house.

“What do you think of the Mu family’s young master, Sister?” Feiying asked with a smile, her eyes gleaming with amusement.

Lan Mulian turned away from the window, her voice calm and measured. “He’s adequate.”

“He has decent talent and intelligence. As for his character, it remains to be seen. He’s a promising candidate.”

Ye Yu and Gongsun Cheng, on the other hand, had been disappointing.

Their talent was undeniable, but their temperament was lacking.

A true cultivator shouldn’t be so easily swayed by emotions.

“What about Bai Ruoxi?” Feiying asked.

Lan Mulian pondered for a moment. “If Master saw her, she might consider taking her as a disciple.”

Bai Ruoxi’s performance had been impressive. She was practically invincible among her peers… No one at Foundation Establishment could withstand the power of that bronze sword.

Feiying glanced at the temptress from the Morning Glory Chamber of Commerce, who had just entered the arena. “We’ve had enough tea, Sister. Shall we go down and take a closer look? I’m sure you’re curious about the Bai family’s young mistress.”

She looked at her sister, a knowing smile on her lips.

Lan Mulian, oblivious to her sister’s amusement, took another sip of tea.

She glanced at the beautiful young woman in the arena below, then nodded.

    “Very well.”
