    No. 11 Fleeting Warmth

    “Yi Yao… 150 points.”

As if worried the class hadn’t heard her clearly, the teacher, still dazed, repeated my score, her eyes fixed on the grading machine.

    Silence.

    A deathly silence.

For ten long seconds, the classroom was so quiet that you could hear the chirping of birds outside.

Sunlight streamed through the gaps in the curtains, illuminating the aisles between the desks.

Liang Tong, the group leader, was so stunned that he didn’t even notice he had dropped his water bottle.

    “Clang!”

The bottle hit the floor, spilling its contents and jolting everyone back to reality.

    “What did she say?”

    “One hundred and fifty points?”

“Wait, did I hear that right? Isn’t that a perfect score?”

“Crab Jie repeated it twice. You heard right. I heard right. It’s definitely one hundred and fifty.”

“Has the world gone mad, or have I?”

“I don’t know, but I think Tan Lijiang is about to lose it.”

The commotion in the classroom finally roused Tan Lijiang from his daze. He rushed to the grading machine, his face pale. He stared at the three clear digits on the display: 150. In disbelief, he pulled out my answer sheet and scanned it again.

    “Beep.”

    150 points.

“You can try as many times as you like. The result won’t change.”

I leaned against the podium, striking Yi Yao’s signature pose from the Black Dragon Society’s headquarters, my hands casually tucked in my pockets. “You lost, Tan Lijiang.”

    “Impossible! This is impossible!”

He grabbed my answer sheet and frantically compared it to his own, his body trembling. “Question one, A. Question two, C. Question three, D… BCADD…”

I waited patiently as he checked all 150 questions, one by one.

“Can I have my answer sheet back now?”

“No! This can’t be real! You cheated!”

He clenched his fist and swung at me. But he, a boy who spent all his time studying and rarely exercised, was no match for me. I easily caught his arm and twisted it behind his back.

“Fighting in school will get you demerit points, Tan Lijiang.”

I maintained my calm demeanor, looking down at him. “It’s just an apology. You resort to violence just because you lost a bet? Are you even a man?”

His score of 140 confirmed my belief that I could change this world.

Even if it was just a slight emotional shift caused by me, his score was indeed lower than in the parallel world I came from. That was a fact.

The butterfly effect: a butterfly flapping its wings in South America could, through a chain of events, cause a typhoon in Asia.

    Let the storm rage.

Yi Yao, you gave me a second chance at life. I’ll give you a better world.

    “Tan Lijiang!”

Ms. Pang finally snapped out of her shock and pulled him away from me. “I’m so disappointed in you!”

    “Teacher! She cheated!”

    He pointed at me accusingly.

“I watched her finish the test in thirty minutes. Tell me, how did she cheat? Are you suggesting I gave her the answers beforehand?”

    “Thirty minutes?”

“It would take at least five minutes to guess all 150 questions, plus another ten minutes to fill in the answer sheet. Damn!”

“She’s been hiding her true abilities!”

“Crap, I remember giving her the stink eye before. Is it too late to suck up to her now?”

“It’s just one test. You think she can get this lucky every time?”

You’re all getting a little too excited.

Ignoring Tan Lijiang, who was speechless after being reprimanded by Ms. Pang, and the rest of the class, who were now buzzing with excitement, I retrieved my answer sheet and calmly returned to my seat.

    Nothing stayed the same forever.

    Not relationships, not people’s hearts.

Liang Tong was one of the most disliked students in our class. He often snitched on his classmates to the homeroom teacher, earning him everyone’s scorn.

But I knew that after entering high school, he, the model student who had won countless awards in junior high, would become the biggest troublemaker in his class, skipping class, going to internet cafes, and getting into fights. Despite being scolded by the teacher almost every day, he would gradually gain a group of “brothers” at school.

That’s how people were. When they reached the end of one path, with nowhere else to go, they would choose another, even more extreme path.

    “Way to go, deskmate!”

“Yi Yao, you’re the best! I have mad respect for you!”

As I sat down, not only Lan Zhuoyue, but even the two quiet boys in front of me turned around and gave me a thumbs-up.

    I smiled and nodded politely.

Although I knew they were mostly impressed because I had put Tan Lijiang in his place.

The bell rang, signaling the end of the second period.

“Those who haven’t handed in their answer sheets, do so now. Yi Yao, come to my office.”

As expected, Ms. Pang summoned me to her office.

“Another heart-to-heart with the teacher, huh? But this time, it’s probably a good thing.”

Lan Zhuoyue, beaming with pride after scoring a hundred thanks to my answers, couldn’t stop grinning.

    “Let’s hope so.”

I gave him a weak smile, put away my answer sheet, and left the classroom. As I arrived at Ms. Pang’s office, I bumped into our homeroom teacher, who was returning from her break.

    “Failed another test?”

She looked at me with disdain, her beady eyes scanning me from head to toe. She snorted and entered the office ahead of me.

I didn’t have much of an impression of this homeroom teacher. In my past life’s memories, she would be transferred to another school in a month or so. She had contributed little to our class. The new homeroom teacher, on the other hand, would be a force to be reckoned with…

“Yi Yao, you need to wake up.”

She sat down at her desk, took a sip of water, and looked at me condescendingly. “What are you going to do with your life with such terrible grades? I know your family isn’t well-off. I understand you’re pretty, but don’t let your lack of knowledge lead you down the wrong path…”

    I knew what she meant.

Pretty girls, even those with bad grades and no job prospects, could always find happiness by marrying a rich man.

Many considered this the “wrong path.”

I vaguely remembered overhearing a conversation between my female colleagues in my past life. They were discussing how some of their pretty and educated friends had the opportunity to marry rich and powerful men but were instead attracted to good-looking, well-educated boys from prestigious universities who worked at renowned companies, worked late hours, and went to the gym. They thought these boys were ambitious and had potential… Five or six years later, those girls were filled with regret.

But I wasn’t like those girls.

I would achieve happiness through my own efforts.

I didn’t need their pity or prayers.

“Yi Yao, don’t just stand there. Have a seat.”

After waiting for about three minutes, Ms. Pang finally arrived, her face beaming. “Are you thirsty? Let me get you some water.”

She pulled out a chair for me, then went to the water dispenser and poured me a glass of water.

    “Xiao Wu, what’s going on?”

The homeroom teacher stared at her in confusion. “What did she do this time?”

    “Good things, heh, good things.”

Ms. Pang pulled out a test paper from her desk and handed it to me, her eyes sparkling with excitement. “Yi Yao, take a look at this test paper. What are the answers to the first five questions?”

I glanced at the paper and instantly rattled off the answers. “ACCBA.”

    “Oh my god…”

Ms. Pang was ecstatic. “Yi Yao, does this mean your previous test scores…”

    “Were all random guesses.”

My answer both amused and exasperated her.

    “Why would you do that?”

    “Because I felt like it.”

I didn’t know how to explain it, so I decided to play dumb. No one would question a good thing, right?

“Well… can you promise me you won’t do that again? Please take your exams seriously from now on.”

Her gaze was completely different from before.

Sunlight streamed through the window, reflecting off the glass on the water dispenser.

    The air conditioner hummed tiredly.

    “Okay.”

I replied calmly, finishing the water she had given me.

“Hey, Xiao Wu, what are you two talking about?”

The homeroom teacher was completely lost. “Did she fail again?”

“No, no, Liu Jie. Do you know what Yi Yao scored on the English test?” Ms. Pang patted my shoulder, her voice filled with pride. “150 points! A perfect score!”

The homeroom teacher still didn’t understand. “What do you mean? Were there 300 multiple-choice questions this time?”

“150 questions. A perfect score. Let me put it this way.” Ms. Pang cleared her throat and announced, as if showing off a new toy, “She got first place!”

    “First place?!”

The homeroom teacher choked on her water. “Did you give her the answers?”

“No! I’m telling you, Yi Yao…”

As the two teachers were about to launch into a debate, I stood up.

“Excuse me, I need to get back to class.”

    “Wait.”

The homeroom teacher called out to me as I turned to leave.

    “Yi Yao…”

I cut her off, knowing what she was about to say. “Don’t worry. I’ll do just as well in my other subjects.”

The sudden change in their attitude made me uncomfortable. Yi Yao’s past memories of sadness and loneliness flooded my mind. I just wanted to get out of there.

It was like someone who had been trying to kick you out of their house suddenly offering you candy and begging you to stay.

I was used to such fickle behavior.

In the corporate world, people only cared about your performance.

You could be the most hated person in the company one day, then become the most popular the next after closing a big deal and earning everyone a bonus.

I didn’t expect school to be any different.

“Beyond the endless stretch of dreams, lies a journey through a cold and unforgiving world.” Perhaps this was what Yi Yao wanted me to understand.

    We were strangers now.

  • Dear, it’s time for your medicine! 44

    Chapter 44: Kiss Me

    Bang!

Sana’s body slammed into the ground, the impact shaking the earth.

Her face, buried in the dirt, scraped against rough soil and sharp pebbles, blood staining the ground.

Qin Chu thought he heard the sickening crunch of bones breaking. He had put all his strength into that throw. He had probably shattered most of the bones in her body.

He saw a few bloodstained teeth scattered near her head.

Even with her considerable strength, Sana couldn’t withstand such force.

Her slender body, reduced to a writhing mass of pain, twitched on the ground like a wounded insect.

She tried to scream, but only a gurgling sound escaped her lips. Waves of dizziness washed over her, and she felt herself drifting towards unconsciousness.

Sana was in a bad way.

Maggie and Angelica stared, their eyes wide with disbelief.

They hadn’t expected him to be so powerful.

Even a Hero shouldn’t possess such strength after only half a day of training. He was cheating!

They had been so confident, so certain of their victory… Now, the situation had reversed. Maggie trembled, fear coursing through her.

She had been so arrogant, so smug… Now, she was terrified.

Sana, defeated in a single move, was barely clinging to life. Maggie knew she wouldn’t fare any better.

    They were doomed.

Angelica’s eyes, however, shone with excitement.

Was this the power of the “Justice’s Companion” Ability?

Her master had explained that this Super-tier Ability not only allowed him to sense evil but also enhanced his strength in battle against Demons. The more Demons he killed, the stronger he became.

And he had eliminated quite a few Demons recently.

She had already found a convenient explanation for his sudden surge in power.

Maggie shuddered as Qin Chu’s gaze, cold and predatory, shifted towards her.

Fear, a primal terror, seized her, her stomach churning.

    She was going to die.

She had witnessed Sana’s fate. Her own will had crumbled.

She didn’t even have the courage to fight back.

Her eyes fell on Angelica… Perhaps she was her only hope.

Qin Chu cared for this maid. If she could take her hostage…

She acted instinctively, her body moving before her mind could fully process the plan.

    But Qin Chu was faster.

If they hadn’t moved away from Angelica, he might not have been able to stop her. But now, it was too late.

As Maggie lunged towards Angelica, a figure materialized before her.

A hand, moving with lightning speed, grabbed her forehead, pushing her down as a knee slammed upwards.

Her face collided with his knee with a sickening crunch.

Darkness swallowed her, her consciousness fading.

Blood poured from her nose and mouth.

He was stronger, faster, more powerful. The difference in their levels and stats was overwhelming.

But they were still valuable experience points. He wouldn’t waste this opportunity to increase his power.

He activated Devourer, its energy enveloping Maggie’s body.

She convulsed, her returning consciousness greeted by a horrifying realization. Her magic and Battle Qi were draining rapidly.

If her energy reserves were depleted, her Battle Origin and Demon Core might shatter, destroying years of training.

She struggled desperately, but his grip was unbreakable.

Her strength faded, her struggles becoming weaker.

She looked up at him, her face bloodied and bruised, her voice a desperate plea.

    “Hero-sama…”

    “P-please… spare me…”

“I’ll be your slave. I’ll serve you faithfully for the rest of my life…”

“I… I’m skilled in the art of pleasure. I can please you far better than Angelica…”

Loseweisse wasn’t just the Holy Maiden. She commanded a hidden force, a network of loyal followers.

These followers were carefully selected, both men and women, chosen for their beauty and their talent. They were trained in magic, martial arts, and even the art of seduction, their minds indoctrinated with loyalty to Loseweisse. Attractive and skilled, they were valuable assets, capable of seducing and manipulating their targets.

Even now, Maggie refused to reveal Loseweisse’s name.

Qin Chu, however, wasn’t interested. Her bloodied face, her broken nose, held no appeal. He ignored her pleas, his grip tightening.

His growing power enhanced Devourer’s potency.

Maggie’s body withered, her flesh shrinking.

Two sharp cracks signaled her doom.

Her Battle Origin and Demon Core shattered, her twenty years of training destroyed.

Her blue eyes, filled with hatred and despair, stared up at him.

He wanted to make her suffer, to prolong her agony, but he knew time was of the essence. Once her energy was drained, he tossed her aside. Her head lolled to the side, her body twitching once before falling still.

He turned towards Sana, who was still writhing on the ground.

Her injuries were worse than Maggie’s. Without immediate treatment, she would die soon.

Devourer accelerated her decline, her life force fading before he could fully drain her energy.

He dealt with the two nuns, retrieved the vial of Stunning Love, then approached Angelica.

She stared at him, her mouth slightly open, her expression still dazed from his display of power.

He lifted her into his arms, her body light and delicate. Her cheeks flushed, and she squirmed slightly. “Master, I can walk…”

“It’s okay, I’ll carry you home,” he said, his voice gentle.

She relaxed, resting her head against his chest, listening to his heartbeat.

Her hand clutched his shirt, her grip tight.

This was her happiness, a treasure she would never relinquish.

She had almost lost it, only to have it returned. Now, she truly understood its value.

“Master, were you watching the whole time?” she asked after a while, her voice trembling slightly.

She wasn’t stupid. His arrival had been too perfectly timed. And his words, “the foolish, insecure Hero, as you so eloquently put it,” confirmed that he had been observing them for a while.

“Yes,” he replied, his voice a soft murmur.

He didn’t bother hiding it. “Do you hate me?”

“No,” she said, nuzzling against his chest like a contented kitten.

    “Do you trust me now?”

    She was clever… He smiled.

“You’re the only one I trust.”

Shaye didn’t count. She was a Witch, her current existence closer to that of a ghost.

Candice was a subordinate he had manipulated and deceived.

Lena Martithes’s loyalty was to the cause, to the fight against the Demons.

Angelica was the only one who was truly devoted to him, the only one he fully trusted.

His answer pleased her. Her cheeks flushed, her eyes crinkling with happiness.

She tightened her grip on his shirt.

She closed her eyes, tilting her head up slightly. “Master… can you… can you kiss me?”

She wanted a reward, though a kiss was a bold request for a maid.

He looked down at her, a chuckle escaping his lips.

He lowered his head, his lips capturing hers.

  • Mistaken Era 65

    Chapter 65

The old male fox looked at Xiao Xiao with some confusion, “You’ve lived here for a long time, why are you still asking me?”

Xiao Xiao let out another “hearty” laugh and then flattered him with blinking eyes, “I’m too young and haven’t cultivated on Lingshan for very long, so how could I possibly know as much as a well-traveled elder like yourself?”

The old male fox was flattered and felt rather proud of himself. As he often roamed far and wide, he did know the legends about the phoenixes on Demon Rock Cliff, so he said, “It’s just a legend that phoenixes once refined themselves here, nesting on the rear mountains of Demon Rock Cliff, laying phoenix eggs protected by thorns, but no one knows when they might hatch… However, these are just ancient folktales passed down. I’ve never actually seen any phoenixes flying out from Demon Rock Cliff.”

Hearing that it was a folktale, Xiao Xiao understood how she should respond. When she approached the young princess again, she adopted the aloof and gracious demeanor befitting a sect leader, neither humble nor arrogant, “As cultivators, we should not be tainted by mundane matters. Since the princess has taken a liking to this mountain and constructed a residence here, we shall take our leave and seek another place to cultivate…”

However, this Princess Yongning was warm-hearted and generous. Upon hearing that they had long been cultivating on the rear mountains, how could she drive away such celestial beings? So she also candidly said, “I will be getting married soon. I’ve only come here to pass a few days before my wedding. I won’t be staying long, so how could I displace you cultivators from the rear mountains? I’ve heard from the servants that there are no paths connecting the front and rear mountains. You can continue cultivating undisturbed on the rear mountains. I’ll instruct the workers and guards not to disturb you!”

After saying this, she excitedly asked Xiao Xiao to lead the way, hoping to catch a glimpse of the phoenixes on the rear mountains as well.

Before Xiao Xiao could politely decline, the princess’s guards hurriedly intervened, “Princess, you absolutely must not go! The rear mountains are desolate and filled with ferocious beasts. If the king learns that we allowed you to venture into such danger, we would be punished for nine generations!”

The guards and maidservants then knelt down in a flurry.

The young princess seemed accustomed to such kneeling and pleas. She silently sighed, then instructed her servants to present boxes of pastries and preserved fruits that she regularly enjoyed, gifting them to Xiao Xiao and the Talisman Sect disciples. She repeatedly asked Xiao Xiao to inform her if any phoenixes appeared on the rear mountains so she could observe them from the Phoenix Viewing Pavilion on the front mountain.

After the young princess finally departed by carriage, Xiao Xiao turned to see Yu Ling’er eyeing the pastry boxes hungrily and immediately slapped her fox paw away, “How dare you eat the Prince Can’s niece’s gifts! What if they were poisoned with a puppet venom?”

Reminded of this, Yu Ling’er shuddered violently and hurriedly tossed the pastry boxes onto the ground.

Knowing Yu Ling’er must be hungry, Tang Youshu said to Xiao Xiao, “Master Ancestor, please lead us to the residence on the rear mountains so we can settle in. It must be covered in dust after being uninhabited for so long. I’ll do some basic cleaning first, then prepare a meal for you all.”

It seemed he had taken Xiao Xiao’s words to the young princess at face value and truly believed the Talisman Sect’s premises were located on the rear mountains.

Xiao Xiao had previously vowed to Master Tang Youshu on his deathbed that she would never lie again. But now, she had lied again, deceiving her own beloved master.

How could she face Master Tang Youshu and bear to see the disappointment on his face?

The lies kept piling up like patched rags, and she could only stubbornly continue this falsehood she had woven.

As a result, Cui Xiao Xiao led Tang Youshu and the fox tribe, step by difficult step, through the dense thickets and brambles, until they finally arrived at the mountain cave where her master had previously guided her cultivation on the rear mountains.

At this time, the rear mountains were still considered forbidden grounds with no stone paths, pavilions, or stone tables like two hundred years later. The journey was extremely arduous.

Most dreadfully, when they reached the stone cave on the rear mountains, Yu Ling’er’s fox eyes widened, and everyone fell into an eerie silence.

Yu Ling’er stared at the vine and cobweb-covered, pitch-black mountain cave for a while in disbelief before finally picking up a small stone and tossing it inside to test the depths.

The next moment, countless bats came fluttering out, startling the timid fox who let out a yelp and clung to Tang Youshu’s neck, refusing to let go.

After regaining her composure, Yu Ling’er asked Xiao Xiao with tearful eyes, “You… inherited the Talisman Sect’s lineage from your master here in this place?”

Adhering to her skills of shameless fortitude, Xiao Xiao dragged out her response, “Well… it has been abandoned for too long, so this cave has become rather desolate. But with a bit of cleaning, it will still be quite cozy and livable.”

Yu Ling’er immediately shook her head. Even as a fox, she was a refined demoness with certain standards! She would never live in such a cold and damp mountain cave, no matter what.

She finally understood why, despite Xiao Xiao’s capabilities, the Talisman Sect had remained unheralded and unable to attract disciples.

Without a paulownia tree, how could a golden phoenix be lured!

With the Talisman Sect’s shabby state, poorer than even a beggar’s den, where could they recruit disciples?

Thinking this, Yu Ling’er couldn’t help but sigh, “We really placed too much hope earlier. Why did we bother using invisibility talismans to sneak away? You should have just led those people who insisted on becoming disciples into this mountain cave and let them live here for a couple of nights. Any who remained determined would truly be fated disciples sincerely seeking to join you. You absolutely must accept such predestined disciples!”

Xiao Xiao actually felt that Yu Ling’er made a lot of sense.

If she had known she would end up weaving lies that would lead them to spending the night in this mountain cave, Xiao Xiao would have definitely brought that group along.

At the very least, she wouldn’t be lacking readily available labor when clearing vines and gathering firewood now!

But there was no use crying over spilled milk. Xiao Xiao thought about it and decided she was too lazy to even bother gathering grass. She told Tang Youshu and the others, “Let’s go, this place is uninhabitable. We’ll head back down the mountain.”

However, Tang Youshu hesitated and reminded her, “But… didn’t you say tomorrow is the proper day for making offerings to the Talisman Sect’s ancestors? If we go down the mountain to find lodgings, we’ll have to travel at least a couple hundred li there and back. With all that back and forth, wouldn’t we miss the auspicious timing for the offerings?”

Xiao Xiao was stumped again. She couldn’t tell Young Master Tang the truth that the ancestor she intended to make offerings to was actually him, who would pass away two hundred years in the future tomorrow.

Moreover, there were no graves on Demon Rock Cliff two hundred years ago where she could make offerings.

It was already too late to hastily construct a grave overnight. If they really waited until tomorrow, who would she be making offerings to?

Master, your teachings are truly profound. This lying has indeed depleted my virtue, disciple has patched up this tattered lie to the point where her mouth has gone soft, utterly unable to mend it further.

That night, they still remained on the rear mountains, building a campfire to rough it through the night before making offerings to the esteemed Talisman Sect’s ancestors the next day at dawn!

Since Wei Jie was not around, dinner was prepared by Tang Youshu. After one taste of the fish soup, Xiao Xiao nearly vomited from the nausea.

It turned out that when Tang Youshu cleaned the fish, he had accidentally ruptured the gall bladder, causing the entire pot of fish soup to be tinged with a bitter, unpalatable flavor.

This indescribable, wondrous taste momentarily reminded Xiao Xiao of how her late master would occasionally cook for them with similar results back in his later years.

Should she mention it? Her master’s culinary skills seemed to have remained stagnant over the past two centuries!

For a while, everyone missed Wei Jie. Although the young master appeared carefree and lazy, he had prepared nearly every meal, whether roasting, braising, or making soup, all with exquisite flavors.

It was unknown if he had reached the Wei Family ancestral home and when he would return to find them…

Thus, on the first night of the Talisman Sect disciples’ return to make ancestral offerings, they spent it in the cold, dreary rain without food or proper shelter.

The ground was too damp, and their bedding had all been left behind in the carriage when they had slipped away using invisibility talismans.

So Xiao Xiao did not sleep at all. She only moved some of the campfire embers closer and silently read through the Talisman Sect’s secret manuals by herself.

Meanwhile, Yu Ling’er and Tang Youshu studied books and characters together, chattering merrily as if quite enjoying themselves.

Xiao Xiao was now making up for the section detailing when her master had first arrived at Demon Rock Cliff alongside Wei Jie.

At that time, after losing his mother, Wei Jie had become resentful of the world and deeply demonic. However, he seemed aware of his tendency to not recognize even close relatives while in his demonic rages, so he would always seek out unpopulated areas whenever an episode struck.

When Wei Jie initially came to Demon Rock Cliff, he had once secluded himself in closed-door meditation on the remote rear mountains but mysteriously disappeared. Tang Youshu searched everywhere but could not find Wei Jie. When he finally saw his master again, Wei Jie was covered in charred burns all over his body.

Fortunately, he possessed fox demoness bloodline which allowed him to slowly recover from the full-body burns over time…

When Tang Youshu recorded this section, he seemed to vaguely imply that the ordeal had also affected his master’s mind, as he wrote that after surviving this tribulation, his master’s temperament became gentle and amiable, developing a penchant for appreciating flora and fauna. He even kept a pet bird…

Reading this, Xiao Xiao broke into a grin, curious to see what kind of bird Wei Jie had kept… Huh? A crow?

Why would he keep a crow? Could it be that he intended to fatten it up as a drinking snack?

However, after the brief smile, Xiao Xiao couldn’t help but shudder – by taking over Wei Jie’s destiny, she was truly stepping into one pitfall after another. If Wei Jie had truly faced some ordeal on the rear mountains, did that mean she would have to endure it in his place? If it was some other tribulation, perhaps it would be fine. But this fiery, full-body burning trial… she definitely couldn’t withstand that!

Thinking this, Xiao Xiao became even more determined – time to make tracks! These rear mountains two hundred years ago were certainly no nurturing environment!

With that thought, she casually stuffed the secret manuals into the bundle she carried and pretended to meditate while surreptitiously observing what the others were doing.

As always, Yu Ling’er loved to sleep in. Tang Youshu had retrieved two small cushions from his backpack, giving one to his Master Ancestor Xiao Xiao, and placing the other on a large boulder.

Ling’er had now reverted to her original fox form, curled up into a fluffy white ball as she slept comfortably on the small cushion.

Tang Youshu was also leaning against the large boulder, seated as he slept. The little fox had unwittingly snuggled her fluffy body against the side of Young Master Tang’s head, who contentedly nuzzled against her soft fur, the two sleeping as innocently as children!

After the other fox tribe members found spots to settle in for sleep, the previously meditating Xiao Xiao suddenly opened her eyes.

She had long made up her mind to seize an opportunity to slip away.

Now that her towering lie could no longer be maintained, when else would she have a chance to escape if not now?

As for her excuse, she had already thought it through. She would leave a message for Tang Youshu, saying that she missed her master terribly, unable to bear the anguish of longing, fearing excessive grief during the memorial offerings. So she had no choice but to leave early.

As for whether Tang Youshu and the others would remain here waiting for Wei Jie or seek another place, that would be up to them.

Although Xiao Xiao felt a million reluctances towards leaving her master, she also knew she had to depart!

Now, under the cover of the dark, moonless night, was the perfect opportunity to escape.

So she left another farewell message on her meditation cushion and then silently applied an invisibility talisman before slipping away from the campsite.

She had previously frequented these rear mountains with her master and fellow disciples. According to her master, all of Lingshan’s spiritual energy converged on these rear mountains, making it an ideal place for cultivation, though he had never explicitly explained why.

However, in this era, the rear mountains were densely forested with no sign of the small paths or wooden signposts from her previous life. So while invisible, Xiao Xiao wandered like a lost spirit… becoming hopelessly lost amidst the layered mountain thickets!

The night was too dark, and even the stars in the sky were not very bright, making it impossible to discern the cardinal directions. Xiao Xiao circled around for a long while but still could not find her way out of this maze-like tangle of thorns.

She hadn’t eaten much for dinner and was now starving. Finally feeling dejected, she sat down where she was to wait for the sun to rise before trying to find an exit.

At that moment, a faint rustling came from the branches overhead. Xiao Xiao looked up to see a long-tailed mountain grouse perched above her.

The grouse seemed slightly smaller than the ones she normally saw, but its tail was exceptionally long. In the dim moonlight, she could not make out its feather colors, only its two eyes gleaming with an eerie light against the darkness, appearing rather unsettling…

As long as it wasn’t a man-eating monster, Xiao Xiao couldn’t be bothered to care. But in the dead of night, shouldn’t grouses be asleep? Could it be that she had disturbed this one?

As Xiao Xiao pondered this, a few more grouses landed on the same tree branch, one after another.

Xiao Xiao hadn’t even seen how they flew up, as if they had simply materialized, each dragging their excessively long tails behind them as they perched in a staggered line on the branch, tilting their necks to silently observe Xiao Xiao.

Their eyes flickered with an eerie glow, unmoving in the pitch-black night, enough to frighten the faint-hearted and startle their souls.

Xiao Xiao warily watched these birds for a while. Seeing they had no intention of closing their eyes to sleep, she couldn’t help but feel apprehensive.

Although grouses were not formidable birds of prey, shouldn’t they fear humans? For them to actively land above a person’s head and gaze at her with such an ominous aura was quite irregular.

However, as the native residents of this mountain, Xiao Xiao decided to cede them the territory and maintain some distance.

But as she stood and walked a short distance into the brambles to rest, she suddenly felt a stiffness in her neck and slowly looked up.

Not far away, up in the tall trees, around ten pairs of those same flickering, eerie eyes were glowing…

Those five grouses had somehow relocated and perched directly above her head once more.

Xiao Xiao was now convinced there was something amiss about these five birds. Grouses were not nocturnal birds of prey and had poor night vision, so they should not be able to see clearly at night to fly around so deftly.

Unless someone had disturbed and threatened them, they would never take flight so nimbly.

Yet these five grouses made not a sound, nor did their wings flap as they relocated, which defied reason!

Xiao Xiao could not help but ponder – just what were these five creatures perching above her head?

Feeling wary, Xiao Xiao silently palmed five demon-subjugating silver talismans, ready to strike first if these birds attacked.

However, the birds perched on the branch showed no signs of movement, only tilting their necks to stare unblinkingly at Xiao Xiao.

Xiao Xiao suddenly understood Yu Ling’er’s fear of the dark and her reluctance to hunt alone in the woods.

In this dead of night, surrounded by towering mountains and dense forests, it was truly terrifying! If she had known she would encounter these five unnerving, watchful birds, Xiao Xiao might have reconsidered slipping away from her obedient grandson-disciple and the others until later.

As she thought this, Xiao Xiao suddenly turned and ran swiftly back towards the campsite – no matter what, she had to return first before attempting to slip away again at daybreak.

Just as she ran, the moon emerged from behind the obscuring clouds, bathing the land in its glow.

Xiao Xiao saw her own shadow cast on the ground, along with a cluster of large, bird-like shadows shifting and flapping wings. In the moonlight, those shadows appeared monstrously oversized, many times larger than her own.

The oppressive sensation of being pursued and hunted was truly unbearable. Unable to withstand it any longer, Xiao Xiao turned to unleash the talismans in her hand.

But before she could turn, her foot stepped onto a soft pile of fallen leaves and then suddenly gave way beneath her as the ground opened up. In her panicked state, her bundle also slipped from her grasp and flew out.

There was actually a deep ravine here! Concealed by fallen branches and leaves, it had become a natural pitfall trap, causing Xiao Xiao to plummet downwards.

In this crisis, Xiao Xiao’s consciousness instinctively called out to the Heaven’s Defiance sword, which swiftly unsheathed and halted her fall just in the nick of time, preventing her from crashing into the ground below.

When Xiao Xiao landed and looked up, she realized the spot where she had fallen through was over a hundred zhang away from her current position!

With the darkness around, she gripped Heaven’s Defiance tightly and ignited a fire talisman to examine her surroundings by the flickering light.

This ravine seemed to be shaped like an hourglass, narrow at the top but spacious below, with an expansive floor covered in overgrown weeds and unidentifiable trees. A stream also flowed through the ravine bottom in a meandering course.

As Xiao Xiao used the fire talisman to look around, the faint light seemed to awaken something in the stream, causing the water to gradually glow and illuminate the entire ravine like crystal jade.

The tiny flame in her hand became redundant, so Xiao Xiao extinguished it. As she approached the stream, she realized the glow came from countless transparent, noodle-like fish swimming within, their slender bodies emitting a brilliant radiance that lit up the entire stream.

It was then that the five grouses who had been following Xiao Xiao descended and landed beside the glowing stream.

They seemed hungry, pecking at the luminous little fish in the water. After eating one or two, their bodies appeared to undergo a transformation, with each feather beginning to glow brilliantly. The crests on their heads also gradually unfurled.

Xiao Xiao had been warily observing these birds, but her eyes widened as she suddenly realized – these didn’t resemble ordinary grouses at all. Moreover, their plumage colors differed greatly, distinctly crimson, azure, yellow, violet, and white.

Regardless of color, their forms and haughty, aloof demeanors were completely unlike any common grouse!

At that moment, the young Princess Yongning’s words about the legendary phoenixes dwelling on the rear mountains of Demon Rock Cliff flashed through Xiao Xiao’s mind…

And these “grouses” seemed to correspond perfectly with the described colors of the fabled five phoenixes. Her late master had read her excerpts from the Lunheng, which stated: “Among those resembling the phoenix, there are five colors – the crimson is the feng, the azure is the luan, the yellow is the huangque, the violet is the yinggui, and the white is the honghu.”

Currently, these five multicolored, luminous birds appeared before her, aligning precisely with the mountain’s folktales!

The question was, why had these five phoenixes been following her?

However, since these were indeed celestial phoenixes, Xiao Xiao dared not rashly attempt to subdue them with talismans. As divine birds, they naturally possessed immense pride. If she revealed hostility despite them not harming her, it would undoubtedly offend their noble dispositions.

So Xiao Xiao cleared her throat and attempted to communicate respectfully, “Esteemed celestial birds, I mean no offense. I merely lost my way, unintentionally trespassing into your domain. Once I find the exit, I will immediately depart and no longer disturb your cultivation…”

After she finished speaking, the celestial birds seemed to understand, yet they nonchalantly continued preening their feathers. They then flew down beside Xiao Xiao, their talons shifting as their long tails swayed, and they actually began performing an ethereal, mesmerizing phoenix dance!

Truly befitting of phoenixes, although smaller in stature than the legends described, their graceful, flowing movements were not the slightest bit diminished.

Xiao Xiao was momentarily entranced, lost in the shimmering iridescence of their swirling feathers and wings as they transformed their poses in an unceasing dance…

However, it was at this moment that the long-dormant demon bead suddenly spoke up, “Wake up, you dimwitted girl! If you’re going to die, don’t drag me down to be buried with you!”

Although it had not spoken for a long time, the demon bead’s tone remained acerbic and scathing, like an old, festering grudge.

Xiao Xiao snapped back to alertness and gripped Heaven’s Defiance tightly as she silently asked, “What do you mean?”

The demon bead seemed to have witnessed something horrifying as it lowered its voice, “You’ve recognized that they’re phoenixes, haven’t you? So why are you still standing there like a wooden dummy? Be careful, or they’ll make a snack out of you!”

Xiao Xiao was perplexed, “But I’ve never heard of phoenixes eating humans. As long as we don’t provoke them, aren’t they auspicious birds?”

The demon bead seemed unable to reason with Xiao Xiao and sounded somewhat agitated, “Sure, celestial birds don’t eat humans… but are you human? Have you forgotten that you’re already a half-demonic body? What’s more, you became a demon by snake possession. With my demonic aura lingering on you, that’s the favorite delicacy of these yang celestial birds! Can’t you see them getting so excited they’ve started dancing? Soon they’ll tear you apart and devour you as a midnight snack! Aimlessly dragging me out in the dead of night to get yourself killed, you foolish girl! I’ve truly suffered ill fate by ending up in your body…”

Then followed a stream of vulgar curses from the demon bead. However, it seemed to fear the phoenixes, its aura suppressed and its voice growing increasingly faint until it was nearly inaudible.

The legends did say that phoenixes favored devouring dragons and serpents!

For instance, the Buddhist sutras mention the garuda, which was said to be the previous incarnation of the phoenix, one of the eight deities of the eight celestial divisions. It was said that whenever the garuda was reborn after its five-hundred-year rebirth cycle, it would consume hundreds of giant serpents and venomous snakes daily…

Xiao Xiao’s heart skipped a beat – that’s right, she had forgotten that one side of her body had already become demonic. Now her entire arm was covered in snake scales, so in terms of taste, she probably wasn’t too different from those fish…

As if confirming the demon bead’s words, the phoenixes’ dance grew increasingly vigorous, their flapping wings filled with force, while their eyes remained fixated on Xiao Xiao.

Suddenly, the lead crimson phoenix let out a shrill, piercing call. As if obeying a command, the other four phoenixes joined in with their cries, then streaked towards Xiao Xiao like bolts of multicolored lightning!

Chapter 82: Six Down, Four to Go… Or Not

Academy regulations stipulated that top contenders on the Nine Star Rank had to accept at least one challenge per month. If no one challenged them, they were required to challenge someone ranked higher. The top-ranked student was exempt from this rule.

However, the regulations only specified the minimum, not the maximum. This meant Yan Zhen’s request to accept ten challenges in one day was technically within the rules, even though it was completely unheard of.

When he made his announcement, the five girls stared at him in shock, their voices overlapping as they tried to dissuade him.

Yan Zhen waved away their concerns, his confidence unwavering.

“Why are you doing this?” Instructor Yu Xuan asked, baffled. “You’re not just trying to show off, are you?”

Accepting ten challenges in one day was practically an insult to his opponents. They would be furious.

In his previous life, he hadn’t done this. He had accepted one challenge per day, fighting for ten consecutive days, successfully reaching the Seventh Star Mystic One rank. On the eleventh day, he had challenged Xiao Mie, defeating him by a hair’s breadth and claiming the top spot on the Nine Star Rank!

Witnessing his hard-won victory, his body battered but his smile radiant, had sparked a flicker of attraction within her. That feeling had intensified after he saved her from the Demon Realm’s assassins, growing into an uncontrollable blaze.

Reborn into this life, she had secretly hoped to witness his prowess on the dueling arena once more. However, his choices seemed to be diverging from his previous life.

“I want to test my limits,” he explained, reciting his prepared excuse. “I feel like I’m still a ways away from reaching the Seventh Star. If I continue cultivating at my current pace, who knows how long it will take? I need to push myself.”

    His reasoning was flawless.

Instructor Yu Xuan sighed. “Alright. But if you can’t handle it, I’ll stop the challenges.”

He smiled at her reassuringly. “Thank you, Instructor~”

The news of Yan Zhen’s intention to accept ten challenges in one day spread like wildfire, throwing the entire Mystic Academy into a frenzy.

Since its establishment, the dueling arena had witnessed countless battles, but never a “gauntlet” like this.

Typically, duels were fought between opponents of similar strength. Winning a duel usually required expending all of one’s energy, leaving little room for another fight, let alone ten in a row.

His challengers were all top contenders on the Nine Star Rank. Accepting a gauntlet of such skilled opponents was practically asking for a beating.

One thing was certain: this was going to be entertaining.

Bookmakers, sensing an opportunity, set up betting pools, offering odds on how many matches Yan Zhen would win, from one to ten.

The odds for “winning all ten” were a staggering one to ten thousand!

Clearly, they believed it was impossible for him to emerge victorious.

Apart from the four girls he lived with, no one bet on him winning all ten matches. The most popular bet was three wins, which was already a testament to their high regard for his abilities.

This was the perspective of the spectators.

As for the ten students who had challenged him, they were all furious. As top contenders among their peers, they possessed immense pride. Yan Zhen’s actions were a blatant insult!

However, they had issued the challenges. As long as he accepted, they couldn’t back down. Otherwise, even if they lost, they would forfeit their monthly pill stipend to Yan Zhen.

The sun began to set, but the heat lingered, refusing to dissipate.

The spectator stands surrounding the dueling arena were packed, filled with students from all three classes. The turnout was even greater than for his duel against Lan Ke.

Below, the ten challengers, all ranked high on the Nine Star Rank, glared at Yan Zhen, their expressions murderous.

Yan Zhen, however, was prepared for their hostility.

System, this doesn’t deviate from the script’s plot, right?

[Please state your reasons for deviating from the script.]

Don’t you think this is way cooler? If I’m going to show off, I might as well go all out! What’s the essence of a “wish-fulfillment story? It’s all about being awesome! As the protagonist, I should actively correct any plot points that are illogical or lackluster, striving to create a more compelling story, not just blindly follow the script. What do you think, System?

[The Host’s reasoning is sound. The system approves.]

    — *Ahem, well, if things go south , could you please reset things? I don’t want to spend a month bedridden.

    [Acknowledged.]

Reassured, Yan Zhen steeled himself. His greatest trump card was the ability to reset if he lost.

    “Yan Zhen!”

    “Instructor Yu Xuan.”

“You… well, I won’t waste your time with unnecessary words. Just go out there and fight. I’ll handle any problems that arise.”

“Thank you, Instructor. I won’t let you down.”

    [Ding! Key plot point commencing.]

[Current plot progress – Chapter 123: Ten Consecutive Victories.]

[Acting Requirements: Accept one challenge per day and achieve a breakthrough to the Seventh Star Mystic One rank during the final battle.]

    [Requirements updated.]

[New Acting Requirements: Accept all ten challenges simultaneously, achieve victory, and reach the Seventh Star Mystic One rank.]

    [Completion rate: 0%.]

Yan Zhen clenched his fists, his eyes hardening with resolve. He strode towards the arena, his every step drawing the gazes of the countless spectators.

As all eyes converged upon him, a fiery aura, like a shimmering veil, enveloped his body. A faint, translucent glow flickered above his brow. Despite being a mere Mystic One, he exuded an air of power that made even the instructors tense.

He seemed to have transformed. His usual gentle demeanor had vanished, replaced by a sharp, almost aggressive aura.

He met the gazes of his challengers, his voice cold and clear. “Which one of you wants to go first?”

“Hmph! Allow me, Liu Liang, sixteenth on the Nine Star Rank, to test your strength!”

A figure shot into the air, performing a somersault before landing gracefully on the arena.

“Yan Zhen, it doesn’t matter how many challenges you accept at once. In the end, I will defeat you.”

The referee instructor retreated to the edge of the arena, announcing the start of the duel.

    “Come on then.”

“I don’t believe a mere Sixth Star Mystic One can be that strong! Take this!”

    The battle erupted.

As his opponent charged towards him, the Spiritual Flame above Yan Zhen’s brow flickered, his perception expanding to encompass a one-meter radius around him.

He slowly clenched his fist, Mystic Power gathering, a faint fiery glow igniting.

The moment Liu Liang entered his perception range, his opponent’s weaknesses were laid bare before him. He swiftly lowered his stance, his fist shooting out like a bolt of lightning, striking the largest opening.

    Single Burst “Eight Extremes Explosion”!

Liu Liang coughed up blood, his body flying backward, crashing off the edge of the arena.

    The battle was over.

The noisy arena fell silent, the spectators staring in disbelief, wondering if they had imagined what they had just witnessed.

One move? That was it? That was a top contender on the Nine Star Rank! Ranked sixteenth out of nearly a hundred students, he should have lasted at least ten rounds!

Xiao Mie’s expression turned grim. That brat… he’s gotten so much stronger in less than a month…

Yan Meng’er and Mi Xue’er erupted in cheers, while Yan Ruyu and Xiao Xinyan clenched their fists, their eyes shining with excitement.

Instructor Yu Xuan and the other instructors, however, had noticed something peculiar.

    “Could that be… Spiritual Power?”

“That kid… not only has he reached such a high level of Mystic Power cultivation, but he’s also awakened his Spiritual Power!”

“Instructor Yu Xuan, your student is a true monster!”

Instructor Yu Xuan smiled politely, her eyes sparkling as she gazed at Yan Zhen.

“Next.” He turned back to his challengers. Only nine remained. “Who’s next?”

Clearly shaken by his display of power, they exchanged hesitant glances. Finally, a portly figure leaped onto the arena.

“Allow me, Ren Ge, fourteenth on the Nine Star Rank, to teach you a lesson!”

    Bang!

    “Argh!”

“I, Lao Hu, thirteenth on the Nine Star Rank–”

    Bang, bang!

    “Oof!”

    “I, ranked–”

    Bang, bang, bang!

    “Ugh!”

As the battles progressed, Yan Zhen began to feel a sense of unease.

What was he doing here? His goal was to complete this plot point while enduring some beatings to strengthen his body, preparing for his future duel against Xiao Mie, where he would need to unleash the Triple Burst “Eight Extremes Explosion” repeatedly.

But these guys… they were surprisingly weak. He had already defeated four, and the strongest one had only managed to withstand three of his punches.

This is ridiculous! Are they throwing the matches?

The spectators were equally bewildered. Yan Zhen might be strong, but he shouldn’t be dominating the top contenders of the Nine Star Rank like this! He was only a Sixth Star!

Some even began to suspect the bookmakers were rigging the matches.

But who would be bold enough to do such a thing?

Even though the Dean wasn’t present, he was undoubtedly watching.

Only the instructors understood. Spiritual Power, for those below the Mystic Scholar realm, was practically a cheat code!

Moreover, Yan Zhen’s control over his Spiritual Power was remarkable. He had even managed to create a miniature combat domain by shrinking his perception range. The moment his opponents entered his domain, their weaknesses were exposed, leaving them vulnerable to his attacks. How could they possibly win?

Yan Zhen frowned, urging the challengers to step up. Finally, a student ranked tenth managed to last ten rounds before collapsing.

Yan Zhen’s attacks were too precise, targeting the weak points in his opponent’s Mystic Power flow, disrupting his techniques and causing immense pain. Unable to fight at his full potential, he was swiftly defeated, leaving him feeling frustrated and humiliated.

But that was the nature of combat.

“Anyone else? Hurry up!” Yan Zhen’s patience was wearing thin.

He had mentally prepared himself for a tough fight, even for a reset, but these guys were turning out to be paper tigers, crumbling at the slightest touch.

Are they truly this weak, or are they throwing the matches?

“Come on! You all challenged me! Why are you scared now?!”

    “I… I forfeit!”

“Who said you could forfeit?! Get up here!”

“I forfeit too! I’m not fighting anymore! Mommy!”

“Hey, where are you going? Get back here!”

“Only an idiot would stay and be his punching bag! I’m out of here!”

“I’m… I’m just a Sixth Star Mystic One!”

“Like hell you are! You’re definitely hiding your true cultivation! You sneaky bastard! You’ll get struck by lightning one day!”

    “…”

The remaining four challengers, hurling insults and curses, fled the arena.

The previous challengers, whose strength was comparable to theirs, had been utterly crushed. What chance did they have?

Fighting was one thing, but getting beaten down within a few rounds was pointless.

Yan Zhen was exasperated. “Don’t run away! I’ll let all four of you fight me at once! Come back here! Instructor, stop them! Don’t let them escape! Damn it!”

They were all gone, leaving him standing alone on the arena, his hair ruffled by the wind, his expression bewildered.

The plot isn’t finished yet! What am I supposed to do now?

The spectators were equally stunned. What just happened? Was this some kind of scam? They ran away without even fighting! Do they have no shame?! Give us our money back!

Only Xiao Mie, Yu Yue, and a few others ranked in the top ten understood. This wasn’t a scam. Yan Zhen was simply terrifying.

The instructors of the fleeing students were mortified. Losing was acceptable, but running away without even trying? What kind of cultivators were they? They would be receiving a harsh lesson when they got back!

The referee instructor could only smile wryly. He had overseen countless student duels, but this was the first time he had witnessed someone demanding a gauntlet, and then scaring off their challengers mid-way through.

“As the remaining challengers have forfeited, Yan Zhen is declared the victor of this ten-match duel. He will receive the monthly pill stipends of all ten challengers.”

Yan Zhen, however, wasn’t happy. Not only had he failed to complete his system mission, but he hadn’t even taken a single hit. This was a complete waste of time.

Who needs those crappy pills? The Small Origin Pills I refine are the best cultivation aids for Mystic Ones.

The highly anticipated ten-match duel ended anticlimactically, leaving both the spectators and the participants dissatisfied. They dispersed, grumbling and cursing.

The five girls gathered around him, stifling giggles at his sulky expression.

“Don’t be upset, Cousin. At least you won,” Yan Meng’er consoled him.

“Winning is all that matters. Did you want to lose? You’re such a silly goose,” Yan Ruyu added.

“That’s right, Little Brother Yan Zhen! You scared them all away! How cool is that?” Mi Xue’er chimed in. “Don’t be discouraged. You’ll have other chances to test your limits!”

    “…”

Xiao Xinyan wanted to say something but hesitated. Their words seemed strange.

Why were they comforting him when he had won? Anyone listening would think he had suffered a crushing defeat.

“Alright, if there’s nothing else, let’s go home,” Instructor Yu Xuan declared.

They left the academy and returned to the house.

Back in his room, Yan Zhen bolted the door and entered the Crystal Stone Space.

His plan to get beaten up had failed. It seemed he had no choice but to seek guidance from his Beautiful Sect Master.

    — I’m such an idiot.

Even if she hadn’t offered to help him strengthen his body, he could have simply asked! With their current relationship, would she refuse him? Of course not!

He mentally patted himself on the back for his brilliance, but his outward demeanor remained innocent and earnest. “Master,” he said, “I want to be able to use the Triple Burst ‘Eight Extremes Explosion’ without any problems. Can you help me strengthen my body?”

Chen Xi shook her head gently. “I’m sorry, Zhen’er. I can’t do that.”

    — She refused.

Huh? He stared at her, dumbfounded.

    “But why, Master?”

“I’ve told you before, Zhen’er. ‘Eight Extremes Explosion’ has a cultivation requirement. Using it prematurely will damage your body.”

“But if I strengthen my body, wouldn’t it be fine?”

“No, it wouldn’t. You might be able to withstand the strain, but the damage will still accumulate. It will build up over time, leading to serious consequences in the future. Just like your grandfather. One day, it all caught up to him, and he collapsed.”

    “…You’re right.”

But he had to do this! He would eventually learn a body tempering technique to counteract the damage caused by “Eight Extremes Explosion.”

Why was his Beautiful Sect Master refusing to help him when the script clearly stated she would? Perhaps she was simply too worried about him, unwilling to risk any harm to his body.

He had no choice but to abandon his hopes of relying on her. His only other option was Instructor Yu Xuan.

Chapter 81: I Want to Fight Ten!

Under Instructor Yu Xuan’s watchful gaze, Yan Zhen forced himself to finish the nourishing soup. He felt a surge of heat through his body. No, “heat” wasn’t quite the right word. It was more like… burning!

He burped, setting the empty bowl aside. Looking at Instructor Yu Xuan, he suddenly felt his attraction to her intensify. He wanted to bury his face in her hair, to taste her exposed skin.

“How was it, Yan Zhen?” she asked softly.

“It was… alright. But not as good as your usual cooking.”

“Well, it’s a medicinal soup. I added some herbs. It might not be as tasty, but it’s good for you.”

Her gentle voice, however, sounded like a seductive whisper to his ears, sending shivers down his spine.

    This is too much!

He took a few deep breaths, struggling to control his urges.

What kind of soup is this? It’s way too effective!

“I should be going now. Just leave the dishes by the door when you’re done. I’ll collect them later.” She leaned closer, pressing a soft kiss against his cheek before departing, her cheeks flushed with a mixture of shyness and delight.

Yan Zhen barely managed to maintain his composure.

Instructor Yu Xuan is too good at this! He couldn’t understand what she saw in him. He was just a sixteen-year-old boy. Apart from his handsome looks, exceptional talent, kind heart, strong will, impressive acting skills, and refined manners, he didn’t have much else to offer.

Maybe she has a thing for younger men?

Or is it simply the protagonist halo working its magic?

The memory of their lunchtime activities resurfaced, sending another wave of heat through his body. He quickly swallowed a Calming Pill.

    Focus on eating.

He picked up his chopsticks and finished his meal, feeling pleasantly full.

He wiped his mouth, drank his tea, gathered the dishes, and set them outside the door before heading to the bathroom for a cold shower.

The evening breeze, cool and refreshing, caressed his skin.

His body had calmed down, the restless energy dissipated. His mind, too, had returned to normal. He no longer saw suggestive shapes in every shadow.

Click. He opened the door to the changing room and stepped inside. At that moment, the bathroom door opened as well. A slender, white figure, wrapped in a towel, emerged.

They both looked up, their eyes meeting. A moment of stunned silence hung in the air.

    “Miss High-and-Mighty?”

    “Yan… Yan Zhen?!”

Xiao Xinyan’s eyes widened, and a wave of mortification washed over her. She instinctively covered her chest and let out a shriek.

She stumbled backward, her legs suddenly weak, and collapsed onto the floor, the towel slipping from her grasp.

Yan Zhen found himself staring at a very revealing “M” shape.

He had a clearer view than during their “treatment session.”

[Image of a naked woman on the floor]

His “dragon,” previously subdued, roared back to life, ready for battle.

Xiao Xinyan scrambled to her feet, her gaze meeting his from below. Her eyes held a mixture of shame, fear, and… submission? The remaining emotion was unreadable. There was no anger, which was strange.

“Yan Zhen, what… what are you doing? Don’t try anything funny! I’m not that kind of woman!”

Yan Zhen swallowed hard, about to respond when Mi Xue’er’s voice reached them from outside.

“Xiao Xinyan! If you’re going to scream while bathing, at least warn us first!”

She entered the changing room and froze, her eyes widening as she took in the scene before her. She rushed over to Yan Zhen, shielding him with her body.

“Little Brother Yan Zhen! What are you doing? How could you…?”

Yan Zhen’s head throbbed. This is a huge misunderstanding!

“Senior Sister Xue’er, it’s not what you think! It was just a coincidence–”

“I know, I know! Don’t look! Close your eyes! Looking at such filth will give you eye problems!” Mi Xue’er interrupted, her soft hands covering his eyes, plunging him into darkness.

Yan Zhen was stunned. Her tone was all wrong. Shouldn’t she be scolding him?

“Mi Xue’er! Who are you calling filth?!” Xiao Xinyan shrieked, scrambling to her feet and clutching the towel to her body.

Mi Xue’er, her face inches from his, her cheeks flushed, turned to face her nemesis. “Who else would I be talking about? Spreading your legs like that in front of a boy! If you’re not ashamed, I’m ashamed for you.”

    “I tripped! I wasn’t doing anything!”

“Oh, please! A Seventh Star Mystic One tripping over thin air? You expect me to believe that? You did it on purpose!” Mi Xue’er glared at her rival. “Xiao Xinyan, I’m warning you, take your… urges elsewhere! Don’t pollute my Little Brother Yan Zhen’s innocent eyes! He’s so pure, so adorable! If you try to seduce him with your… pathetic excuse for a body, I won’t let you get away with it!” She punctuated her words with a huff.

    “You–!”

Xiao Xinyan was furious, but with her clothes disheveled and her composure shattered, she couldn’t win this argument. Unable to retaliate physically, she could only grit her teeth in frustration.

Yan Zhen remained silent, standing motionless like a piece of furniture, pretending he was completely irrelevant to the situation.

    “What’s going on here?”

Yan Ruyu and Yan Meng’er arrived, followed closely by Instructor Yu Xuan.

One look at the scene, and they understood. Yan Zhen had obviously walked in on Xiao Xinyan.

Yan Meng’er quickly took Mi Xue’er’s place, covering his eyes from behind and pulling him away. Yan Ruyu gently pushed him from the front, the sisters working together to guide him to a safe corner, away from the brewing storm.

Instructor Yu Xuan stepped between Mi Xue’er and Xiao Xinyan, preventing them from tearing into each other.

“That’s enough, you two! Stop arguing! It’s late, and you’re disturbing the neighbors. Go to bed.”

“Fine. I’ll let you off easy this time, for Instructor Yu Xuan’s sake.” Mi Xue’er was genuinely angry. She hadn’t even had the chance to show Yan Zhen that part of her, and this shameless hussy had already stolen the first look! “But if it happens again, I’ll see you on the dueling arena. And I’ll make sure you regret it.”

“You and what army? You’re just a measly Sixth Star Mystic One! Bring it on!” Xiao Xinyan retorted, her pride refusing to back down. When it came to strength, she wasn’t afraid of Mi Xue’er. “Why wait for the dueling arena? We can settle this right here, right now! Come on!”

“You think I’m scared of you?”

“Whoever backs down is a dog!”

Instructor Yu Xuan’s eye twitched. “Xue’er! Xinyan! Go to your rooms!”

Neither girl dared disobey their instructor. With a final huff, they turned and stormed off in opposite directions.

Instructor Yu Xuan sighed, massaging her temples.

These two… even after facing life and death together at the Sacred Land Academy in my previous life, they still fought constantly. What am I going to do with them?

Her gaze fell on Yan Zhen, still sandwiched between Yan Meng’er and Yan Ruyu. Her mood brightened slightly. “Alright, Yan Zhen, go take your bath… I’ll deal with these two. Meng’er, Ruyu, let’s go.”

She turned and left, Yan Ruyu following close behind. Yan Meng’er, however, lingered, her mischievous side resurfacing. “Cousin, do you want me to scrub your– Hey! Cousin, stop dragging me! I can walk on my own!”

Left alone, Yan Zhen blinked, bewildered.

He took a bath in a daze, dried off in a daze, and returned to his room in a daze.

He sat on his bed for a long time, his mind replaying the events of that evening.

Finally, he snapped out of his stupor and entered the Crystal Stone Space.

The stone table had been lowered. His Beautiful Sect Master sat behind it, a space left open beside her, clearly intended for him.

Seeing her beloved disciple, Chen Xi patted her thigh invitingly.

Yan Zhen, determined to maintain his composure, quickly sat down, only to find himself enveloped in her embrace, her wide sleeves trapping him like a hunter’s net.

The fiery energy he had thought he had suppressed flared back to life, his “Armstrong Cannon” primed and ready.

Chen Xi immediately sensed his reaction, but she chose to ignore it for now. As before, she kept her hands on his waist, occasionally interrupting his attempts at drawing squares and circles, disrupting his focus.

Yan Zhen quickly reached his breaking point, his face flushed, his eyes glazed over.

Finally, unable to endure it any longer, he turned to her, his voice a pathetic whimper.

    “Master~”

His pleading tone and pitiful expression melted her heart. However, she wanted to tease him a little longer. Feigning ignorance, she asked, “What is it, Zhen’er? Your face is so red. Are you feeling ill?”

    “Master, I… I…”

    “Hmm?”

I want you to take care of me, Master.

The words were on the tip of his tongue, but he abruptly regained his senses. This didn’t fit his protagonist persona.

No, I can’t say that! I have to hold back!

Chen Xi, however, couldn’t resist. She leaned closer, her lips brushing against his ear. “Do you want Master to take care of you?” she whispered.

    “Mmm.”

He didn’t dare answer, only managing a noncommittal sound.

“How do you want Master to take care of you, Zhen’er?” she asked softly, her hand moving suggestively. “Like this?”

    “…”

“You’re not saying anything, Zhen’er. Does that mean you agree?”

    “…”

His lips pressed together, he stubbornly continued drawing his shapes. To his surprise, despite the chaotic desires swirling in his mind, he managed to maintain a sliver of clarity, slowly completing his square and circle.

Chen Xi’s eyes widened. She hadn’t expected him to make a breakthrough at a time like this… Well, there was even less reason to deny him now.

“There, there. You’re Master’s only disciple. Of course, I’ll take care of you. Just leave everything to me~”

She tilted his chin up with her free hand, forcing him to meet her gaze. She leaned in, her lips meeting his.

Clothes rustled, and a fire ignited.

The next morning, Yan Zhen entered the dining room, feeling refreshed and invigorated. However, the atmosphere was even more awkward than the day before.

“Good morning, everyone! What’s for breakfast?” he greeted them cheerfully.

“Porridge today, Cousin,” Yan Meng’er replied.

“Oh, chicken and mushroom porridge? Sounds good.”

    “…”

“Why aren’t you eating? Waiting for me? Don’t be so polite! Dig in!”

He demonstrated by taking a large gulp, nearly emptying his bowl.

“Mmm~ Perfect balance of flavors! Delicious! You should eat too.”

As if suddenly released from a spell, the girls picked up their spoons and began eating.

The next few days passed in a similar fashion. After school, Yan Zhen would immediately retreat to the Crystal Stone Space to practice splitting his focus.

Finally, on the fifth day, he grasped the key. He could now successfully divide his attention three ways, drawing his shapes while simultaneously dealing with his Beautiful Sect Master’s distractions.

It was time to put his newfound skill to the test in actual combat.

Left hand forceful, Yang energy. Right hand gentle, Yin energy. He channeled his Mystic Power according to the “Tai Chi Shock” technique, unleashing both forces simultaneously, aiming to neutralize the Mystic Power his Beautiful Sect Master had gathered in her palm.

However, she easily outmaneuvered him, her single hand more than enough to keep him on the defensive. He couldn’t even touch her sleeve, let alone neutralize her Mystic Power. Their training sessions usually ended with him bruised, battered, and exhausted.

Afterward, his Beautiful Sect Master would prepare a medicinal bath for him, her touch, imbued with the five-colored glow of the Starry Glass Fire, soothing his wounds.

Under her dedicated tutelage, his strength grew by leaps and bounds. Finally, after half a month, he achieved a breakthrough, successfully neutralizing her Mystic Power and even managing to tear a piece of her sleeve.

“Well done, Zhen’er! Congratulations!” Chen Xi beamed, her praise genuine.

Yan Zhen breathed a sigh of relief, his heart soaring. “It’s all thanks to your guidance, Master! Thank you!”

With this new skill, he was confident he could hold his own against Xiao Mie. However, he wasn’t satisfied yet.

While “Tai Chi Shock” was a valuable trump card, “Eight Extremes Explosion” was the key technique for his protagonist role. He needed to master the Triple Burst before moving on to the next arc, as it would play a crucial role in many future scenarios.

The only way to achieve this was to endure some beatings.

Ever since he had claimed the third spot on the Nine Star Rank, the other top contenders had been eyeing his position with envy. Over the past half month, he had received no less than ten challenge letters. However, he had ignored them, choosing to focus on his cultivation, as the script dictated.

Now, it was time to put those challenges to good use.

One morning, Yan Zhen entered the dining room in high spirits, only to find Mi Xue’er embroiled in another argument with Xiao Xinyan.

That’s right. Even after half a month, Xiao Xinyan was still stubbornly refusing to move out.

Mi Xue’er, naturally, was furious, demanding she pack her things and leave.

Xiao Xinyan, however, had an excuse. She claimed her old room had been assigned to another family member, leaving her with nowhere to go.

Mi Xue’er didn’t care. She told her to find her own place.

Xiao Xinyan, of course, refused. At this point in the year, there were no vacant rooms for rent in the North City District. Besides, she insisted on staying wherever Instructor Yu Xuan lived.

Mi Xue’er was ready to throw down, but Yan Ruyu and Yan Meng’er intervened.

    “Are you leaving or not?”

    “No.”

“Xiao Xinyan, you’re the eldest daughter of the Xiao family! Aren’t you ashamed of acting like such a shameless freeloader?!”

    “No.”

Ever since Mi Xue’er had mocked her in front of Yan Zhen, calling her “filth” and claiming she would give him “eye problems,” Xiao Xinyan had adopted an attitude of utter indifference. Nothing Mi Xue’er said could faze her anymore.

    Mi Xue’er: Combo attack!

    Xiao Xinyan: HP -1 -1 -1!

Instructor Yu Xuan, accustomed to their bickering, ignored them. Seeing Yan Zhen enter, she beckoned him to sit down.

The two girls immediately ceased their argument, straightening their postures, as if unwilling to appear unladylike in front of him.

Yan Zhen, however, paid no attention to this subtle shift. “Instructor Yu Xuan,” he announced, “I want to accept all the challenges I’ve received in one day. Can you arrange it?”

  • It turns out, they are the protagonists 118

Chapter 118: Mu Zhi’an, the Man Who Resists Beauty

After another round of tedious cultivation with Bai Ruoxi, Mu Zhi’an left her room, feeling refreshed and slightly disappointed.

He had promised Lin Ling, the foodie dragon, a delicious dinner. If he broke his promise, she might come looking for him, or worse, she might target more Eight Treasures Cranes.

The peak lord of Boundless Sea Peak would be heartbroken.

He arranged Lin Ling’s dinner, then went to his study, lighting a candle.

He sat at his desk, retrieving two paper cranes. He opened one and began to write.

This letter was for Shang Yanfei, the sect master.

“Sect Master, when you summoned me today, I was filled with a mixture of excitement, nervousness, and anticipation. I had suspected that my pen pal was you, and when my suspicions were confirmed, I was overjoyed, but also apprehensive.”

“After all, the difference in our status is quite significant.”

“But even so, our conversation was enjoyable. Your wisdom and your maturity are both admirable. I heard that the Pilgrimage Palace is a popular spot for couples. You’re familiar with the sect, Sect Master. Perhaps one day we could admire the peach blossoms together.”

“I apologize for my forwardness, but I couldn’t contain these feelings any longer. My words are sincere.”

    “It’s a shame I couldn’t remember your face.”

He reread the letter, satisfied with its tone and content, then folded it into a crane and tossed it out the window.

The sect master was a shark, difficult to handle, but maintaining contact was essential.

Her personality in the letters and in person was slightly different.

In the letters, she was playful and even flirtatious. But in person, she possessed an imperial aura. Even her most casual actions carried a sense of authority.

Even he, a seasoned Lust Seeker Protagonist, felt pressure in her presence.

But in the letters, he could be more bold.

For example, his invitation for a date. She would never agree to meet a mere disciple at the Pilgrimage Palace. But the invitation itself conveyed his admiration and infatuation, portraying him as a naive and innocent boy enamored with a powerful woman.

The better her reading comprehension, the more she would appreciate his sincerity.

He opened the second crane and began writing.

“Thinking back, since joining the sect, we’ve both been busy with our own affairs, with no time for letters. The nights are long, and sleep eludes me, so I’m entrusting my thoughts to this crane…”

He wrote an eight-hundred-word love letter, then added, after a moment of thought: “I saw your face today, Senior Sister, and I can’t help but imagine us walking together through the sect. I know it’s a distant dream, but one must have aspirations. Perhaps one day…”

He folded the letter into a crane and tossed it out the window, watching as both cranes disappeared from view, then he stretched and left the study.

The Jade Glass Palace was a marvel of spatial manipulation. Each room contained a pocket dimension.

It was true for Bai Ruoxi’s and his rooms, and it was true for the other disciples as well.

He found Huang Manting’s pavilion and saw a beautiful female disciple standing guard.

After she reported his arrival and received confirmation, she led him inside.

“Sister is bathing. Please wait a moment, Young Master Mu,” she said politely, her gaze lingering on him with a hint of hostility.

Huang Manting is quite capable. Not just at the Morning Glory Chamber of Commerce, but even within the Two Polarities Sect, she has followers.

And this one is quite pretty. He poured himself a cup of tea, discreetly observing her figure.

She’s quite curvy. Those thighs… He quickly looked away.

Appreciating a woman’s beauty was one thing, staring was another.

He waited for nearly half an hour, then Huang Manting emerged.

Perhaps she knew he was coming, or perhaps it was her habit after bathing, but she wore a loose, casual robe, revealing her long, shapely legs, her slender waist, and her ample bosom.

She sat gracefully, crossing her legs, her white toes wiggling playfully, her every gesture seemingly designed to entice him.

She considered herself a beauty, but he already had the Bai family’s young mistress. If she acted like a proper lady, she would never be able to seduce him.

So when she had heard of his visit while enjoying her rose bath, she had chosen this attire.

He might be clever, but he was a former womanizer. He couldn’t have changed that quickly.

And she had heard about his close relationships with the Ye sisters.

But to her disappointment, when she sat down, he only glanced at her briefly, then quickly looked away.

It seemed Bai Ruoxi and his servant girl, Wei Mengrou, had given him an immunity to beauty.

But she wouldn’t give up so easily.

She glanced at her disciple, who seemed reluctant but eventually nodded and left the pavilion.

Huang Manting poured him a cup of tea, smiling. “Young Master Mu, you haven’t visited since joining the sect. What brings you here today?”

    “Or perhaps…”

She placed her hand on his, her voice soft and alluring. “Have you changed your mind? Are you giving up on the Bai family’s young mistress and choosing me?”

He shook his head, his voice filled with mock hesitation. “Miss Huang, I came here for something important. Please don’t…”

If she hadn’t known him, she might have fallen for his act.

But seeing his hesitation, she remembered their encounter at the Morning Glory Chamber of Commerce, his calculated approach, and she narrowed her eyes.

She crossed her legs, her gaze meeting his, a playful smile on her lips. “You’re not here to entertain me with your acting, are you, Young Master Mu?”

She looked at him, her eyes filled with mock shyness, biting her lip, her voice soft and seductive. “Time is precious, Young Master Mu~”

She tugged at her robe, revealing a flash of white.

He glanced at her, then quickly looked away, shaking his head. “I have Ruoxi, Miss Huang. I can’t betray her…”

He averted his gaze, demonstrating his gentlemanly restraint.

But his reaction only fueled her desire to conquer him. She leaned forward, her chin resting on her hand, smiling. “You always have an agenda, Young Master Mu. You rejected my invitation for a late-night chat last time. You’re not here to simply talk, are you?”

“But before you tell me your reason, I want to know why you helped me receive that destiny inheritance.”

“And how did you know the true method…?”

If he hadn’t warned her not to infuse the tablet with her spiritual energy, she might have done so. And then, like Gongsun Cheng, she would have exhausted her energy and been expelled from the realm.

She wouldn’t have received the inheritance.

I made it up. How else could I have given you a favor…? He smiled, his voice calm. “It’s a secret.”

“As for why I helped you… I made a promise to your father. I’m simply keeping my word.”

She studied him, surprised, then a smile spread across her lips, her beauty captivating. “You’re a man of your word, Young Master Mu.”

She had thought he was a scheming manipulator, but it seemed he was also honorable.

He had given her a destiny inheritance, simply because of a promise he had made at the Morning Glory Chamber of Commerce. It was a testament to his character.

After all, destiny inheritances were highly coveted.

She sipped her tea, her lips moist and alluring, then said, her voice soft, “The Third Prince is investigating you.”

He looked at her, feigning surprise. “Why would he do that?”

She chuckled. “He holds grudges. You two had a disagreement, didn’t you? He wants revenge.”

“He told you that…? It seems he trusts you…” he said, smiling.

She twirled a strand of hair, her voice soft and seductive. “He mentioned you, warning me not to get too close to you.”

    “But… love is often uncontrollable.”

She held her teacup to his lips, smiling. “Don’t you agree, Young Master Mu?”

He sipped the tea, sighing. “Miss Huang, I’m really not here for that.”

“It’s fine. We can discuss other matters after we’re done with business~” she said, her smile alluring.

“The Third Prince would be heartbroken…” he said, chuckling.

She scoffed, her voice laced with disdain. “Why should I care if he’s heartbroken?”

If it were the crown prince, no, if it were the Eldest Princess, she might reconsider.

The Morning Glory Chamber of Commerce had branches throughout the Eastern Realm. She didn’t lack for anything material. She simply sought emotional fulfillment.

And a lovestruck fool couldn’t provide that.

“Speaking of which, the Third Prince seems to have the backing of a vice peak lord,” she added, her voice turning serious.

    “Be careful, Young Master Mu.”

    He didn’t react.

Lan Mulian had already warned him.

“Won’t you stay here tonight?” she asked, changing the subject, her gaze meeting his, her eyes filled with a seductive invitation.

He shook his head, his voice filled with mock regret. “Miss Huang, I’m really not that kind of person.”

He had already indulged with Bai Ruoxi several times today. He was temporarily in sage mode.

And if he accepted her offer, she would surely discard him once she was bored.

She was only so enthusiastic because he was unattainable.

Once she had him, she wouldn’t cherish him.

He was the fisherman, and she was the fish.

And she was inviting him into the water.

But he wanted to reel her in.

She bit her lip, her eyes glistening with mock tears. “You’re so cruel, Young Master Mu. I was planning to refuse to give the Third Prince any information about you.”

He looked at her, smiling. “Tell him everything he wants to know.”

“Tell him everything about Ruoxi and me…”

    She studied him, confused. “Why?”

He smiled, his voice soft. “You’ll find out later.”

“Tell me now. Why should I listen to you?”

“Or you could stay here tonight and chat with me…” She tugged at his sleeve, her gaze meeting his.

He shook his head, his voice filled with mock regret. “Another time, Miss Huang. I promise.”

She stared at him, his expression sincere, his resistance baffling. According to her information, he was supposed to be a womanizer. Yet he was refusing her seductions. How could any man resist her…?

She sighed dramatically. “For the sake of that destiny inheritance, I’ll help you… But next time, Young Master Mu, you have to spend some time with me…”

“But how can you be so sure he’ll come to me for information?” she asked.

“He’ll come,” he replied with conviction.

Men loved to show off in front of the women they admired.

This was the perfect opportunity for him to demonstrate his power in front of her. He wouldn’t miss it.

She watched as he left, sipping her tea, then she felt a warm breath against her leg.

She looked down at the beautiful disciple kneeling at her feet, her voice soft. “My feet are sore. Give me a massage.”

She looked away, her fingers twirling a strand of hair, her thoughts racing.

Tell the Third Prince everything about him? Wasn’t that like handing him a weapon?

    What was he planning?

And how could he be so sure the Third Prince would come to see her?

Fifteen minutes later, a disciple hurried in, glancing enviously at the girl kneeling at Huang Manting’s feet, then said, “Master, the Third Prince is here to see you.”

He actually came… She smiled, her beauty captivating.

    “Bring him in.”

She would soon find out what Mu Zhi’an was planning, wouldn’t she?

And as for who she would support… it had been clear from the beginning.

They were both from Tianxuan City. Helping each other out… it was only natural.

The Third Prince had no idea that the woman he was pursuing was pursuing another man.

Mu Zhi’an returned to the pavilion, entering Bai Ruoxi’s room and lying down on the bed, his head resting on her lap. He watched as she meditated, her beauty serene, and he closed his eyes, enjoying her fragrance, the softness of her thighs against his cheek.

He had done everything he needed to do. All that was left was to return the cranes to the peak lord of Boundless Sea Peak. He had to do it soon, before Lin Ling ate them all.

Then he could sit back and watch the show.

When it came to connections, he wasn’t lacking.

  • It turns out, they are the protagonists 117

    Chapter 117: Competing with Connections?

“This Vessel thing is great, but it’s completely useless to me,” Mu Zhi’an lay in bed, his arm wrapped around Bai Ruoxi’s slender waist, staring at the ceiling, his voice filled with mock disappointment.

“Mu Lang, is this really the time for this?” she asked, glancing at him, her eyes filled with a mixture of shyness and amusement.

She had disliked him for a long time. Firstly, because of his reputation as a womanizer, his frequent visits to pleasure houses, his relationships with courtesans. And secondly, because of his persistent and often annoying attempts to woo her. She had found his handsome face irritating. That was why, when she had pleaded with him in the carriage, she had felt such disdain. She would never have imagined that the boy she had once despised would become the man she genuinely loved.

He looked at her, her cheeks flushed, her hair slightly disheveled from their activities, her usually elegant composure disrupted. But it didn’t make her seem unkempt. It simply enhanced her beauty, giving her an air of vulnerability.

“If not now, then when?” he chuckled. “And besides, weren’t you saying something different just now?” he whispered in her ear, his voice teasing, making her blush even deeper, her eyes glistening with tears.

This shy and alluring side of her, it was a side she rarely showed in public. Even the disciples in Tianxuan City and the Two Polarities Sect wouldn’t believe that this cold and seemingly unattainable woman could be so clingy and affectionate.

Even though his desire had faded, he couldn’t resist kissing her blushing cheek, then gently stroking her fox ears.

“D-Don’t touch them,” she protested, her hand covering his.

He took her hand, chuckling. “I can’t believe you actually grew fox ears. It’s a shame you don’t have a tail.” He sighed dramatically. He had been curious about her full transformation.

She rolled her eyes. “This isn’t a joke, Mu Lang.” She stopped his other hand, which was wandering beneath the blankets, her voice laced with concern. “If someone sees me like this, it might affect my chances of becoming an inner disciple.”

“If that’s the case, it simply means those peak lords have poor judgment,” he replied calmly, pulling her closer. He paused, then asked, “Can you hide them?”

Bai Yuanfeng could conceal her aura. Surely Bai Ruoxi could do the same.

She nodded. “I can, but it will take at least a day.”

When she had broken through from the first to the second level of Core Formation, her Vessel had expanded, and her Nine-Tailed Fox bloodline had awakened slightly. The difference between Foundation Establishment and Core Formation was truly immense, not just in terms of strength, but also in the manifestation of one’s bloodline. While awakening her Nine-Tailed Fox powers would make her stronger, with the current tensions between humans and demonic cultivators, revealing them openly would be sensitive.

“Mu Lang, be honest. Do you dislike me now?” she asked, her voice filled with a sudden insecurity, her gaze meeting his.

He looked down at her, her cheeks still flushed from their cultivation, her beautiful eyes glistening with tears, their allure captivating. He gently wiped away a tear, his gaze meeting hers, his voice reassuring. “I told you, Ruoxi. It doesn’t bother me.”

Who could possibly dislike a fox girl? Especially a Nine-Tailed Fox! If she worked hard, she might even reach the Nine Tails. Then she would be on the same level as the World Devouring Python and even the sect master. With her talent, it wasn’t impossible. Then I can finally relax and be a kept man. He chuckled inwardly.

He didn’t have much pride. After all, being kept by a beautiful woman, it was a dream come true for many. It was a comfortable and enjoyable lifestyle. And he was simply working towards that goal.

Senior Sister Lan, Ye Lingxuan, they were both incredibly talented. I should find a way to give Qian’er a cheat as well. He had accepted his fate. He might be envied by the heavens, his talent supposedly so great that it jealous the gods. But the women around him, they were all exceptionally talented as well. And they had cheats. Something he lacked.

It wasn’t that he didn’t try to obtain cheats. It was just that the ones he found, he couldn’t use them himself. It was frustrating. In a game, he would be the support character, weak in combat, but capable of boosting his allies, giving them experience and equipment. And he himself was a cheat, designed to help the women around him improve their cultivation.

I wouldn’t be surprised if my status changed from “Supporting Role” to “Support” or even “Heroine.” He chuckled inwardly.

Seeing that he wasn’t disgusted, that his gaze was filled with desire, she blushed, lowering her eyes, her voice a soft murmur. “You have strange tastes, Mu Lang.”

He stroked her hair, his voice gentle. “Stay in your room for the next two days, Ruoxi. Suppress your demonic aura and hide your ears.”

He touched her ears, and she shivered, her body squirming slightly. He chuckled. “Actually, this incident, it’s quite timely.”

She looked up at him, her eyes filled with confusion. “What do you mean?”

“The Third Prince is investigating me. He’s trying to find my weaknesses,” he explained.

“But I don’t have any weaknesses. My only dark secret is my past womanizing.”

Her eyes darkened, her gaze filled with a mix of passion and something else.

Mu Lang used to frequent pleasure houses. He only stopped when he started pursuing me. But recently, he’s been close to the Ye sisters and Senior Sister Lan.

She remained silent, her arms wrapping around him, her face buried in his chest, her eyes closed.

Why does this feel strange? He looked down at her, then continued, “He won’t find anything on me, but he might investigate those around me.”

“He won’t be able to find anything on Mengrou. Her hometown is too far away. But you, he might be able to uncover something.”

“Ye Yu’s accusations about you being a demonic cultivator, it was a major incident in Tianxuan City. If he investigates, he’ll find out quickly.”

Her eyes filled with worry. “…What should we do?”

Back in Tianxuan City, the Mu family’s influence was absolute. He could control the narrative. But if the Third Prince used this against her within the Two Polarities Sect…

“The sect isn’t that rigid. With your talent, they’ll protect you. You’re innocent,” he said, smiling. “In fact, this is a rare opportunity.”

“…An opportunity?” she asked, her eyes meeting his.

He stroked her cheek, his voice soft. “Since someone wants to gather information on me, to find my weaknesses…”

“I’ll simply give him all the information he wants.”

“No,” he shook his head. “Not just my information, but yours as well. And the information about Ye Yu’s accusations.”

She stared at him, her mouth agape, her voice incredulous. “Mu Lang, what are you planning…?”

“You do have demonic aura within you. And since it seems to manifest whenever your cultivation increases, we’ll simply let everyone know that there’s demonic aura here.”

He paused, then added, “But it won’t be your demonic aura.”

“Whose will it be then?” she asked, confused.

“Someone who already possesses demonic aura,” he replied, smiling.

She blinked, her brow furrowing, then her eyes widened with realization. “You mean her…?”

He placed his finger on her lips, silencing her. “Shh.”

She hesitated, then asked, “Will she agree…?”

“She doesn’t care about such things,” he chuckled. “She only cares about what’s for dinner.”

The Third Prince? Or the people behind him? It didn’t matter if they were peak lords or elders. Their accusations would be meaningless.

She might not help actively, but she could help passively. Just like him, sometimes he was tired of being proactive, and he would passively accept Bai Ruoxi’s affection.

“How will you give him the information?” she asked, her voice laced with uncertainty.

“He’ll surely send someone he trusts to gather information, right?”

“Anyone with a brain would do that,” he agreed, nodding. “I can’t deliver it myself, and neither can anyone close to me. They would be suspicious.”

“But there’s someone perfect for this role.”

“We’re all from Tianxuan City. Helping each other out, it’s only natural. Isn’t that what her father said?”

Seeing her confusion, he didn’t explain further. He kissed her, then pulled the blankets over them.

He would sleep first. He would deal with everything else later.

  • The Delicate Female Lead Only Wants to be Loved by the Villainous Young Ladies 24

Chapter 24: Does Being With Me Make You That Unhappy?

    Inferior blood…

Adele scoffed internally. Look who’s talking…

Dorothy seemed completely oblivious to the casual cruelty of her words. She simply hummed a cheerful tune as she led the way towards the rooftop, her long, slender legs swaying enticingly with every step.

Adele had to resist the urge to… well, let’s just say that certain images, best left unexamined, flashed through her mind.

As they passed by the Sequence Two classroom, Dorothy paused, her gaze sweeping over the occupants within, sending a shiver of fear through the room. The difference in their rankings might have been only one level, but it was a difference that felt as vast as the distance between the peak of a mountain and its base.

Her gaze settled on Celeste, who was sitting alone in a corner, her face covered in wounds. She noticed the deep gash on Celeste’s cheek, the one that pulsed with an icy blue energy, a clear indication of Hermione’s handiwork.

    What happened?

But that wasn’t what bothered Dorothy. What bothered her was the fact that Celeste had tried to intervene earlier, back when that Sequence Three vampire had attacked Adele.

Two distinct forces had surged forward, both intent on protecting Adele. One had belonged to Dorothy, and the other… well, it was clearly Celeste’s.

But Dorothy had effortlessly swatted her power aside, like a fly buzzing too close to her ear. No one else had noticed, not even Adele.

But Dorothy remembered. And she didn’t like it one bit.

    Hence, the icy glare.

Celeste, her face pale and drawn, clearly still reeling from the force of Dorothy’s earlier attack, averted her gaze.

Two days in a row, targeted by two different Sequence Ones… Celeste was having a very, very bad week.

Or maybe… it’s not bad luck at all.

Maybe it’s what she deserves for coveting something she can never have.

Adele, her thoughts a jumbled mess, followed behind Dorothy, keeping a safe distance. She had noticed Dorothy’s lingering gaze on the Sequence Two classroom, and curiosity got the better of her.

Even in the dim light of the hallway, Celeste’s golden hair stood out, a splash of sunlight that drew Adele’s gaze. It felt like a scene from a movie, a fated encounter.

For a moment, their eyes met, and Adele felt a warmth spread through her chest, a warmth that was quickly extinguished as she forced herself to look away.

She didn’t know what to make of it.

So, she followed Dorothy, her head bowed, her gaze fixed on the floor.

They walked in silence, past the classrooms, up the stairs, towards the roof.

Behind them, the Sequence Two classroom slowly came back to life, the other students breathing a collective sigh of relief now that the coast was clear. Some even whispered amongst themselves, their words laced with a cruel amusement.

“…Did you hear? Celeste has a thing for that lowly half-blood.”

“Those wounds on her face… They’re from the Ice Queen, apparently.”

    “Even the Princess hates her.”

    “She’s finished in this academy.”

“That’s what she gets for coveting the Princess’s toy.”

“She’s not even worthy of being called a toy…”

They made no effort to hide their conversation from Celeste, their words like daggers piercing her heart. They weren’t from families that were significantly more powerful than hers. She might be a strong Sequence Two, but if they banded together… what could she possibly do?

Celeste sat alone in her corner, her head bowed, her shoulders slumped. Her golden hair, usually so vibrant, seemed dull and lifeless, shielding her face from view.

No one could see her expression. No one could see the tears blurring her vision as she squeezed her eyes shut, trying to block out the whispers, the laughter, the pity.

She couldn’t bear to look at Princess Dorothy. She was even too ashamed to meet Adele’s gaze.

But she had felt it… that fleeting warmth, that gentle touch that had lingered on her for the briefest of moments when their eyes had met. It was a flicker of warmth that had threatened to melt the ice that had encased her heart.

    But it was gone now.

Adele had left with Dorothy, whisked away right before her eyes.

    Why… Why can’t I do anything right?

    ………………

Adele followed Dorothy up the stairs to the rooftop, her gaze fixated on the gentle sway of Dorothy’s red velvet skirt, her mind wandering to dangerous, inappropriate places.

If I were to bend down just a little… and then look up…

Ahem, no. Bad Adele. Stop that.

I’m not some creepy pervert who gets off on looking up girls’ skirts in video games!

Still… she had to admit, Dorothy was… attractive. Her type, even.

If only she wasn’t such a horrible person.

The door to the rooftop was open, framing the azure sky and fluffy white clouds like a painting. Adele climbed the stairs, each step taking her closer to the heavens.

The rooftop was a spacious, well-equipped area that served as the exclusive domain of the Sequence Ones. Lower-ranking vampires rarely ventured up here, too intimidated to even approach. As for the human elites, well, they had better things to do than to involve themselves in vampire politics.

Even though the door was open, everyone knew that this was Dorothy’s territory, her secret lair. And where Dorothy went, the other Sequence Ones followed. They gathered here to play games, to gossip, to do whatever they pleased.

The academy, in a show of either incredible tolerance or utter cowardice, had even gone so far as to construct several buildings on the rooftop for their exclusive use: a tea room, a private cinema, a lounge, even a gaming room. It was extravagant, to say the least.

This was Adele’s first time on the rooftop since her arrival in this world. And despite her best efforts to appear composed, she couldn’t help but gasp in awe.

The Sequence Ones might have been powerful, but their power was only possible because the academy allowed it, even enabled it. It was a consequence of that incident, the one that had nearly destroyed the fragile peace between humans and vampires.

Humans had paid a heavy price for their actions, forced to make concessions, to appease the vampires, especially the descendants of the True Ancestor who had been wounded that day. There was another faction of Sequence Ones, led by the True Ancestor’s descendant.

They were a powerful group, but their influence paled in comparison to Dorothy’s faction. Still, they were numerous, well-organized, and they had formed their own governing body within the academy, much like a student council.

Dorothy’s faction, on the other hand, consisted of the following members:

    • The Ice Queen: Hermione

    • The Dream Eater: Sharon

    • The Black and White Twins: Amaterasu Kuro and Tsukimi Shiro

“What are you thinking about, Adele?”

A voice, close to her ear, startled Adele out of her thoughts.

She turned to see Dorothy’s face inches from hers, her features so beautiful, so captivating, that if Adele didn’t know any better, she might have actually been charmed.

“N-Nothing…” she stammered, her cheeks flushing.

“Are you sure?” Dorothy pressed, her crimson eyes sparkling with amusement. She twirled gracefully, her movements fluid and elegant, and before Adele could react, she was enveloped in a warm embrace.

Dorothy’s breath tickled her neck, sending shivers down her spine. It was a strange sensation, a mixture of warmth and a lingering chill. Perhaps it was just the contrast between their body temperatures, or perhaps…

Adele’s heart pounded in her chest, but it wasn’t from Dorothy’s touch. It was her body, betraying her once more, responding to Dorothy’s presence in the most primal of ways.

Her blood sang, a siren’s call that Dorothy was all too eager to answer.

Adele couldn’t speak. It was as if her body had made a conscious decision to betray her mind, to succumb to Dorothy’s allure.

And to make matters worse, her expression, the way her eyes welled up with unshed tears, only seemed to encourage Dorothy.

Dorothy’s breath hitched, her fangs, which had been slowly extending, retreating back into her gums with a disappointed whine.

Adele might have been the one being manhandled, but somehow, Dorothy seemed even more distressed.

“You promised…” she whined, her voice thick with betrayal.

“You promised to give me a reward!”

“I won the game! I won!”

    “Why… Adele…”

“Does being with me make you that unhappy?”

  • The Delicate Female Lead Only Wants to be Loved by the Villainous Young Ladies 23

Chapter 23: No Room for Anyone Else

At this moment, Dorothy resembled nothing more than an eager puppy who had just retrieved a thrown frisbee, tail wagging furiously, eyes bright with anticipation as she looked up at her owner, waiting for her reward.

And unfortunately, the “owner” tasked with providing said reward… was Adele.

Of course, that was just Adele’s inner monologue. She wouldn’t dare voice such a thought aloud.

Don’t let Dorothy’s innocent appearance fool you. This girl was bad news. Downright wicked, in fact.

Need proof? Look no further than her audacity in claiming Adele as her personal blood bank, her little cake to share with the other Sequence Ones. She clearly viewed Adele as nothing more than a plaything, an object to be used and discarded at her whim.

Doesn’t she know the meaning of “facing the consequences?”

No matter how tightly she clung to Adele, no matter how sincere her gaze seemed, Adele couldn’t feel a shred of genuine warmth in her touch. All she could do was force a smile and pray for the best.

Besides, inviting Dorothy to “play” was already a deviation from the original plot. Desperate times called for desperate measures, sure, but judging by Dorothy’s words – “You finally let me join your game” – it was clear that the original Adele had never indulged her, not even once.

And now, by breaking that unspoken rule, Adele had no idea what she had just unleashed. Would this lead to a more favorable outcome? Or would it make things even worse?

It was like opening Pandora’s Box.

    Dorothy is a loose cannon…

Adele wracked her brain, trying to recall any instance in the original story where someone had managed to successfully navigate a relationship with Dorothy, to find a way to coexist, or even gain the upper hand.

    But there was nothing.

Which meant… she was on her own.

Well, better to die trying than to just lie down and take it.

Don’t overthink it… Just go with the flow…

And with that thought, her hand, as if guided by some unknown force, reached out and gently patted Dorothy’s head. It was an instinctive gesture, a knee-jerk reaction to the sight of a puppy who had just performed a trick.

    The air crackled with tension.

    Adele: ……

    Dorothy: ……~

I can’t believe my hand moved on its own! Adele screamed internally.

Even Tang Linlang, standing behind her, was speechless, her eyes wide with a mixture of shock and awe. She probably hadn’t expected Adele to be so… bold.

As for the lower-ranking vampires in the nearby classrooms… well, they had all turned away, pretending to admire the scenery, or perhaps brush up on their vampire history. Anything to avoid making eye contact.

    Don’t look, don’t look, don’t look…

They were terrified that Princess Dorothy might mistake their curiosity for something more… something that might get them killed.

As for Adele… well, in their eyes, she was as good as dead. Some people were alive, but they were already dead inside.

Because daring to touch the Princess like that… especially when you were nothing more than a blood bag, a toy…

Adele’s heart hammered in her chest, a frantic rhythm she was sure Dorothy could hear.

As if to confirm her suspicions, Dorothy’s gaze drifted down to Adele’s chest, her lips curving into a sly smile.

“That’s a lovely sound,” she purred, her voice barely a whisper. “Is it for me?”

“…If you say so.” Adele took a deep breath, forcing herself to sound calm, collected.

It was a small step, but a necessary one. A terrifyingly brave step.

She was pretty sure her brain had stopped working.

The good news was, Dorothy seemed pleased. If she had said “unpleasant,” Adele was pretty sure her heart would have exploded right then and there.

Because if that happened… well, she wouldn’t be able to hear anything anymore, would she~?

“Adele…” Tang Linlang’s voice, trembling with apprehension, shattered the illusion of calm.

    The air instantly turned glacial.

Dorothy’s gaze, cold and sharp as a shard of ice, snapped to Linlang.

Hold on… Did you just steal Hermione’s signature move?

But upon closer inspection, there was a subtle difference. Hermione’s coldness was a physical thing, a tangible chill that seeped into your bones, that could coat the world in a layer of frost. Dorothy’s coldness, on the other hand, was something far more insidious. It was a pressure, a suffocating aura that seemed to seep into your very being.

“Linlang… why don’t you go on ahead to the restroom? I need to… spend some time with Dorothy,” Adele said, forcing a smile.

Linlang opened her mouth to protest, but Adele cut her off, her mind racing.

Don’t you dare say another word! Don’t you dare provoke her!

I need you to survive this, to grow stronger, to fight alongside me in the future! Don’t throw your life away for nothing!

    Wait…  I’m Dorothy’s weakness?

“Just go!” Adele urged, her voice taking on a sharper edge.

Linlang choked back a sob, tears welling up in her eyes. She knew what Adele was doing, sacrificing herself to appease that horrible vampire princess.

I hate her… I hate her so much!

And I hate myself even more for being so weak, so utterly useless!

If only… If only I were stronger… Could I stand by her side then? Could I actually help her?

She couldn’t waste this opportunity, this chance Adele had given her.

Wiping her tears, Linlang turned and fled towards the restroom, her shoulders shaking with suppressed sobs, her pigtails bouncing with every frantic step.

Adele watched her go, her expression a mixture of relief and concern.

    (≡Д≡;)

    It’s just a trip to the restroom… She’s overreacting…

And then, as if suddenly remembering where she was, who she was with, she turned back to Dorothy, her heart sinking.

Dorothy was watching her, her gaze intense, possessive. For a moment, Adele felt like the only two people in existence were her and Dorothy.

    No… That’s not right.

She’d gladly offer me up to the other Sequence Ones if it amused her. What makes me think I’m anything special to her?

Adele bit her lip, hard, the pain a welcome distraction from the frantic beating of her heart.

As if sensing her distress, Dorothy’s gaze softened, drifting down to Adele’s chest once more.

“It’s slowing down,” she murmured, a hint of disappointment in her voice. “Not as lovely as before…”

Her voice was like a wind chime, beautiful yet melancholic.

“Let’s go somewhere else,” she said, taking Adele’s hand in hers. “It’s… too loud here.”

Adele, who had long since withdrawn her hand from Dorothy’s hair, instinctively clutched at her chest, her other hand flying up to cover her racing heart.

Dorothy, thankfully, didn’t seem to notice her distress.

She was a very straightforward girl, at least in Adele’s opinion. She didn’t play mind games, didn’t hide her true intentions behind a mask of indifference like Hermione.

“I hate it here too,” she said, her voice echoing through the hallway. “It reeks of… inferior blood.”

Her words were blunt, cutting even.

A wave of unrest rippled through the nearby classrooms, followed by an almost palpable silence as the Sequence Three vampires, gritting their teeth, forced themselves to look away. Some, recognizing the futility of defiance, even plastered obsequious smiles on their faces.

But Dorothy didn’t even spare them a glance.

In her world, in her eyes… there was often no room for anyone else but Adele.

  • Come, Let Me Take You Home 10

No. 10 A Melody for the Fallen Princess

If the heart has no resting place, it wanders everywhere.

Similarly, if a person has no good intentions, they create chaos wherever they go.

School has always been a microcosm of society, ever since its inception.

Long ago, in my past life, when I was still a “model student” in this very class, I had no idea how toxic the environment was. I didn’t know that Lan Zhuoyue, the boy who often skipped class, got into fights, and talked back to teachers, was such a loyal friend. And I certainly didn’t know that Tan Lijiang, the boy who always approached me with a smile and asked questions, would say such hurtful things to his classmates.

“By the way, when you copy my homework, remember to change a few answers. Don’t copy everything.”

I finished organizing my desk just as the morning reading bell rang. I pulled out my English textbook and spoke casually.

“I know, it’s not my first time copying.”

Lan Zhuoyue scribbled away furiously. “But seriously, deskmate, were you being serious earlier? Do you actually have the answers to this English test?”

    “No.”

“Then why did you make that bet with Tan Lijiang?”

    “Because I won’t lose.”

    “What?”

He stopped writing and stared at me. “Are you telling me you’ve been faking your bad grades all these years, just to surprise everyone in ninth grade?”

I glanced at him. “Is that a problem?”

“Hey, I’m not saying it’s a problem. I’m just saying, if that’s true, you’ll be our protector from now on.”

“Yeah, yeah, I’ll protect you. Happy now?”

I rolled my eyes and swatted his head with my textbook. Only after the book landed on the desk with a loud “thwack” did I realize this was one of Yi Yao’s habits as a girl.

Lan Zhuoyue, seemingly accustomed to my “princess” behavior, just laughed. “Yi Yao Xiong, you seem different today.”

    “More adorable?”

“Adorable my ass. More like… more mature. Or to put it bluntly…”

I rolled up my textbook into a makeshift baton. “Bluntly what?”

“Don’t play dumb. I’m not saying another word.”

He gave me a playful shove and gestured towards the podium. “Teacher’s coming.”

“Everyone, put away your textbooks. Time for the test.”

Our English teacher was a young woman in her early twenties, fresh out of university. She lacked experience and was often bullied by the students.

Her surname was Pang, and some students had nicknamed her “Crab” behind her back. Sometimes, they even called her that to her face.

“Seriously, Crab Jie? It’s still morning reading time!”

“Less talking, more working. You have two hours to finish over a hundred multiple-choice questions. Put away your books.”

It seemed Ms. Pang wasn’t in a good mood today. She glared at the student who had spoken out of turn and handed out the test papers to the first desk of each group. “Four test papers, one answer sheet. No listening, no essay. Whoever finishes first gets graded first.”

“Hey, Yi Yao, need any help?”

Two boys sitting in front of me turned around as they passed me the test papers.

“Yeah, I can’t stand that Tan Lijiang. What you said earlier was awesome. Don’t lose.”

They were members of the “Li” faction and naturally wanted to see Tan Lijiang humiliated.

I simply shook my head. “I’m good.”

My indifference made them turn back awkwardly.

“I feel like Yi Yao’s aura is different today.”

“Me too. She seems to have changed a lot in just two days. She used to be so timid.”

    Well, think what you want.

“So, what’s your plan? Google the answers?”

Lan Zhuoyue finished writing his name and student ID on the test paper and looked at me curiously.

For us ninth graders, exams were a regular occurrence: monthly exams, weekly exams, class mock exams, grade-level mock exams. We were all numb to them, let alone a small unit test like this.

I picked up my pen and replied without hesitation, “I’m going to solve them. What else?”

He pointed towards Tan Lijiang. “They’re provoking you.”

I followed his gaze. Sure enough, Tan Lijiang and a few other boys from the “Tan” faction were smirking and making faces at us.

“You can play on your phone or take a nap. I’ll wake you up when I’m done.”

I turned my attention back to the test paper.

“Damn, you’re so cool, “bro”. This is the first time I’ve seen you this confident.”

And I intend to stay this way.

I didn’t reply and started working on the test.

I remembered scoring 146 out of 150 on this test in my past life. Since it was all multiple-choice, there was no essay to drag down the average score. Tan Lijiang had come in second with 142.

    Which meant…

I flipped through the pages, quickly locating the two questions I had gotten wrong and writing down the correct answers.

    A perfect score shouldn’t be a problem.

    Time ticked by.

Trusting me completely, Lan Zhuoyue pulled out his phone and started reading a novel, hidden behind a stack of books.

Ms. Pang noticed him several times but didn’t bother to reprimand him. Perhaps, in her mind, Lan Zhuoyue was a lost cause.

Even if he cheated, he probably wouldn’t pass anyway.

I finished the test in thirty minutes. To be safe, I double-checked my answers. Once I was certain it was a perfect paper, I transferred the answers to the answer sheet.

Just as I put down my pen, the bell rang, signaling the end of the first period.

“Those who need to use the restroom may do so. The rest of you, continue working on your test.”

Ms. Pang didn’t even look up.

“Here.” I handed my answer sheet to Lan Zhuoyue. “Change a few answers when you copy. Don’t make it too obvious.”

“I know, I know. You’ve said it like three times already.”

He glanced at Ms. Pang, who was busy grading papers, and snatched the answer sheet.

“No, what I mean is,” I took a sip of my salted water, “this is a perfect paper. You need to change more answers. Otherwise, the teacher will notice.”

    “Holy shit, are you serious?”

Lan Zhuoyue looked at me as if I had grown a second head. “I’ve never seen a perfect paper in this class.”

I rolled my eyes. “Are we bros or not?”

    “We are.”

“Then why don’t you believe me?”

“No, no, I believe you, I believe you.”

He gave me a sheepish smile and grabbed his pen. “I’ll change a third of the answers. I’ll hand it in first and test the waters.”

Just then, Ms. Pang’s voice rang out. “To the student in the corner, don’t test my patience. I know your capabilities. You won’t find the answers to this test on Baidu. And to the female student, if you’re done guessing, you can memorize some vocabulary instead of just sitting there.”

She was reprimanding me for finishing too quickly and Lan Zhuoyue for cheating too blatantly.

Lan Zhuoyue lowered his head and silently copied my answers. I took out my notebook and started listing the vulnerabilities and solutions I had discovered while hacking into Heavenly Fire Network Technology.

Soon, the first student finished the test and handed in his paper.

“Luo Xiaoning, 129 points. Good, you’ve improved since last time. But I suggest you spend more time checking your answers.”

Ms. Pang swiped the answer sheet through the grading machine and announced the score.

“Damn, almost 130? This test was that hard?”

“You still have time to chat? Tell me, what’s the answer to question 110?”

A wave of panic spread through the classroom.

    “Beep.”

“Liang Bin, 131 points. Very good.”

“Feng Rongxiao, 125 points. A bit of a shame. You could have gotten a higher score if you had checked your answers.”

More and more students finished the test and handed in their papers.

“Zhao Guoqiang, 89 points… Why didn’t you check your answers? You had so much time! Would checking kill you?”

“Wang Jie, 105 points. Same goes for you. What’s the rush?”

    “…”

It was clear from her tone that Ms. Pang was disappointed in those who finished early with low scores.

With about twenty minutes left, our group leader handed in his paper.

“Liang Tong, 135 points. Excellent. The highest score so far. You have a good chance of getting into the top three.”

As he returned to his seat, Liang Tong flipped Lan Zhuoyue off.

“I swear, I’m going to beat him up after class.”

Lan Zhuoyue, having finished copying my answers, saw Liang Tong’s gesture and clenched his fists. He grabbed his paper and walked towards the podium, returning the gesture as he passed Liang Tong’s desk.

    A bunch of immature kids.

    “Beep.”

“Lan Zhuoyue… one hundred… one hundred points?”

Ms. Pang, who was grading papers, looked up in shock. She grabbed Lan Zhuoyue’s shoulder as he was about to leave. “Who did you copy from?”

    “Can’t I do it myself?”

He gave her an annoyed look.

You didn’t stop me from cheating earlier. Now that you have no proof, you can’t do anything about it.

    “You…”

Ms. Pang realized she was at a disadvantage and waved him away. “Go back, go back. Don’t let me catch you playing on your phone during class again. I’ll confiscate it.”

“Who was playing on their phone? I was just checking the time.”

Lan Zhuoyue, oblivious to the fact that there was a clock on the wall, hurried back to his seat.

“Deskmate.” He turned to me and grabbed my shoulders, taking a deep breath. “Deskmate, tell me this isn’t real.”

“It’s real. This is not a dream.”

“You really got a perfect score? And you did it all by yourself?” He picked up my answer sheet. “I remember I only changed half the answers, and I still got a hundred.”

I removed his hands from my shoulders. “I’ve told you three times already.”

“I’m done… Ugh, there are a few questions I couldn’t solve. I probably bombed it again.”

As we were talking, Tan Lijiang stood up, his voice loud enough for the entire class to hear. “I’m done. Unlike some people, I don’t need to cheat.” He grabbed his answer sheet and walked towards the podium.

“Aren’t you going to check your answers?” Ms. Pang pointed at the clock. “You still have more than ten minutes.”

“No need.” He looked at Lan Zhuoyue and me. “I think it’s good enough, especially compared to someone.”

    “Alright.”

Ms. Pang took his answer sheet.

“Tan Lijiang, 140 points. Heh, not bad, not bad. If you were a bit more careful, you could have gotten a perfect score.”

140? Did I affect him somehow? He made even more mistakes than in my past life.

    “Wow! 140 points!”

“That’s probably the highest score in the history of Class 11, right?”

“How is Yi Yao supposed to beat that? She wouldn’t have enough time even if she googled all the answers…”

“Tan Ge(Brother Tan) could have gotten a perfect score if he wasn’t so cocky.”

The classroom erupted in chaos once again.

    “It’s fine. This is enough.”

Tan Lijiang waved at me from the podium. “Yi Yao, are you still searching for answers?”

    “Hahahahaha…”

    A few students laughed.

I closed my notebook, grabbed my answer sheet, and walked towards the podium.

    “Yi Yao.”

As I stood beside her, Ms. Pang finally spoke. “I saw you finish the test in less than half an hour. What have you been doing for the past two periods?”

    “Reading,” I replied matter-of-factly.

“Do you have any respect for your parents? You rely on guessing for every test. Do you think you can guess your way through the high school entrance exam? Even Lan Zhuoyue got a hundred this time. How many points are you aiming for?”

Tan Lijiang chuckled. “Statistically speaking, with four options for each question, if you guessed randomly for a 150-point test, your expected score would be 60. So, Yi Yao, are you confident you can even get a 60?”

Liang Tong, who was leaning against the wall sipping his drink, chimed in. “Don’t get a 59. That would be embarrassing. Not only would you become Tan Ge’s slave, even the African tribes wouldn’t want you.”

    “Hahahahaha…”

Their laughter echoed through the classroom.

The room was filled with hostility.

“My business is none of your concern.”

I said calmly, handing my answer sheet to Ms. Pang. She sighed and swiped it through the grading machine.

Having witnessed the entire drama, most of the students were now watching us intently.

    The classroom fell silent.

    “Yi Yao…”

    “Beep.”

The sound of the machine scanning my answer sheet pierced the silence.

I saw Ms. Pang’s eyes widen in shock.

    “Yi Yao… 150 points.”

Her voice trembled as she dropped the bombshell.
