    Chapter 46: Reunited with Hermione

After that… encounter, Adele wasn’t sure if she had actually taken a nap. She rubbed her chest, her fingers tracing the delicate curves beneath her shirt, but she felt… normal.

Which meant… Sharon hadn’t done anything to her while she was asleep.

But then… she remembered Sharon, her shyness, her innocence, the way she had fled from Adele’s kiss, her cheeks burning, her eyes wide with… panic?

And Adele realized… that she had been worried for nothing.

    Sharon… she was surprisingly… pure.

    ………………

It was getting late. Adele quickly gathered her things, her textbooks, her notebooks, her pens… everything she needed for her afternoon classes.

She paused at the door, her gaze lingering on the room next door, Sharon’s room, then she continued down the stairs, her expression carefully neutral, her thoughts… hidden.

Her afternoon classes were uneventful. Two general education courses, one of which was… math.

Why do I still have to study math, even after becoming a vampire? Adele groaned internally. If it was… anatomy, I could at least justify it. Knowing which blood vessels have the tastiest blood… that’s a useful skill.

    But math?

She sighed, her shoulders slumping with defeat. She had no choice but to endure.

Especially with Tang Linlang sitting behind her, her gaze fixed on Adele, her admiration… unwavering.

Adele wanted to slack off, to give up, but the thought of Linlang’s disappointed expression, her heartbroken whimpers… it was too much to bear.

Thankfully, the material wasn’t too difficult. Based on Adele’s memories of her previous life, her high school math skills, the level of math taught at Cromwell Academy was… equivalent to a human high school curriculum.

Which made sense. Vampires, despite their enhanced abilities, weren’t exactly known for their… academic prowess. The academy had adjusted the curriculum accordingly.

And high school math… well, Adele could handle that.

She might have claimed to have forgotten everything she had learned in high school, but the truth was… it was all still there, buried somewhere in her subconscious, waiting to be… reactivated.

The first half of the class was a struggle, but then… it clicked. The formulas, the equations, the logic… it all came flooding back.

The teacher, a middle-aged man with a receding hairline and a kind smile, noticed Adele’s sudden burst of enthusiasm and decided to… test her.

It was the price she paid for her beauty, her undeniable charm. She was a magnet for attention, whether she wanted it or not.

Linlang, hearing her name called, her heart skipped a beat, her fingers clenching around her pen.

But Adele, her expression calm, her voice steady, answered the question perfectly.

The teacher nodded, his smile widening, and Adele sat down, her heart still racing.

The other students, their jealousy evident in their whispered comments, their mocking laughter, couldn’t help but express their… disapproval.

“What’s so impressive about that? Humans are supposed to be good at academics. It’s the only thing they’re good at, since their magic is so weak, hahaha.”

“She’s becoming more human every day, that half-blood.”

To vampires, humans were synonymous with weakness, with inferiority.

Linlang, her fists clenching, her eyes flashing with anger, couldn’t hold back.

“You wouldn’t dare say that in the Student Council’s presence!” she retorted, her voice sharp, her gaze challenging.

The other vampires fell silent, their faces hardening. They couldn’t deny the power of the Student Council, the elite human students who ruled the academy with an iron fist. Some of them were rumored to be as powerful as the Sequence Ones, their abilities rivaling even those of the vampire nobility.

There were even whispers that the leader of the Black Feather Society, the most powerful vampire faction within the academy, had been defeated by the Student Council President.

Of course, anyone who dared to voice such rumors openly… well, they wouldn’t live to see another sunrise.

But the fact that the Black Feather Society had never bothered to deny those rumors… it spoke volumes.

And it solidified the Student Council’s reputation as… a force to be reckoned with.

Linlang had successfully diverted the attention, the hostility, away from Adele. But at a cost. She was now the target of their scorn, their ridicule.

“So what if the Student Council is strong? What does that have to do with you?” one of the vampires sneered.

“Not all humans are united, you know. They probably look down on weaklings like you just as much as we do.”

Linlang, her fists clenching, was about to retort when a piece of chalk, thrown with pinpoint accuracy, bounced off her forehead. It didn’t hurt, but it was enough to silence her.

The other vampires who had been mocking her, however, weren’t so lucky. The classroom echoed with their cries of pain as pieces of chalk, propelled by an unseen force, slammed into their foreheads, leaving behind red welts, even… drawing blood.

    “Enough! Silence!”

The math teacher, his voice calm yet commanding, had finally intervened, his power, his control over… objects, evident in the way he had effortlessly subdued the unruly students.

Adele, watching in awe, realized that this unassuming math teacher… he was a force to be reckoned with.

Imagine… if those pieces of chalk had been… bullets.

The precision, the power, the control… it was terrifying.

The chalk that had hit Linlang had been a gentle tap, leaving behind nothing more than a white mark. But the chalk that had struck the other vampires… well, it had sounded like… watermelons splitting open.

Order was restored, and the class continued, the students now subdued, their earlier arrogance replaced by a grudging respect for their teacher’s… abilities.

After class, Adele, instead of rushing back to her dorm, walked over to Linlang’s desk, her hand reaching out to gently rub the spot where the chalk had hit her forehead.

“Are you okay, Linlang?” she asked, her voice soft and concerned. “You didn’t have to… defend me like that.”

“I-I did!” Linlang insisted, her cheeks flushing. If Adele had asked her to catch a bullet, she would have done it… gladly.

Adele chuckled, her fingers drifting upwards, her touch lingering on Linlang’s hair, her gaze softening. It felt like… petting a puppy.

If Linlang had a tail, it would be wagging furiously right now.

But then, Linlang’s expression clouded, her thoughts drifting back to… that afternoon, to the scene she had witnessed outside the infirmary.

“Adele,” she asked, her voice hesitant, her words carefully chosen. “I… I went to the infirmary after class, but… you weren’t there.”

She was trying to be discreet, to avoid mentioning that she had… followed Adele.

“Oh… I was feeling better, so I went back to my dorm,” Adele lied, her expression carefully neutral, her heart pounding with a guilt she refused to acknowledge. “I’m sorry, Linlang. I didn’t realize you were coming. I should have waited for you.”

Linlang’s eyes dimmed, but she quickly reassured herself. It’s okay… It’s okay. Adele doesn’t want anyone to know… especially not her friend. It’s understandable.

    It’s not her fault.

    It’s… it’s poverty’s fault. It’s my fault!

If only I were richer… then Adele wouldn’t have to… to do this. To sell herself for a comfortable life.

Adele… she just wants a better life. She’s done nothing wrong.

    And maybe… maybe they’re just friends. Maybe…

Her mood plummeted, her despair evident in her slumped shoulders, her downcast gaze.

Adele, her eyes narrowing, her mind racing, wondered if Linlang had seen her with Celeste, if she had… misinterpreted their relationship.

But even if she had… it didn’t matter. Adele could handle it. A few sweet words, a few gentle touches… Linlang was a good girl. She would forgive Adele.

    Heehee~

Adele was starting to embrace her inner… villain.

And Linlang… well, she was well on her way to becoming a simp.

But could a simp truly be considered a simp if she was… rewarded for her devotion?

Adele might be stringing Linlang along, but she was far more genuine, far more… caring, than the true villains in this story.

So, in the end… wasn’t it better to be on Adele’s side?

Master, I’ve seen the light! I’ll be your dog!

Adele, sensing Linlang’s distress, lingered after class, offering her… private tutoring. Linlang’s math skills, after all, were… lacking.

And then… a voice, cool and sharp, called out from the hallway.

    “…Adele.”

Adele turned, her gaze drawn to the figure standing in the doorway, her expression a mixture of impatience and… concern?

It was Hermione, her usual aloofness replaced by a subtle tension, her icy blue eyes searching Adele’s face, her gaze lingering for a moment, then… softening as Adele, her expression transforming, a radiant smile illuminating her features, rushed towards her.

Hermione’s throat tightened, her fangs aching with a sudden, unexpected thirst. But she maintained her composure, her expression carefully neutral, her heart… betraying her as it pounded in her chest, a frantic rhythm that echoed Adele’s approaching footsteps.

Chapter 45: You Can’t Escape, Dream Girl

“It’s getting late, Adele. We should go.”

    “…Okay.”

Adele nodded, suppressing her swirling thoughts. She glanced at the antique clock on the wall, its pendulum swinging at a noticeably slower pace than in the real world.

About… half the speed? she estimated. Which means… I’ll have an hour in here for every thirty minutes in the real world.

And if I have a dream within this dream… will I be trapped forever, like in Inception?

That wasn’t a comforting thought. If Sharon wanted to, she could make this dream a living nightmare, a labyrinth of horrors that Adele would never escape.

Adele shivered, but then… she reminded herself that Sharon was… gentle. Timid. Almost… childish.

    For now, she was safe.

But she couldn’t let her guard down. She had to play her cards right, to gain Sharon’s trust, her affection… to make her fall for… the real Adele.

Only then would Adele feel truly… safe.

They reached Sharon’s room, and Adele was surprised to find it… modern. Tastefully decorated in a European style, its furniture sleek and contemporary. It was located on the north side of the castle, however, its windows facing a courtyard, which gave it a slightly… gloomy atmosphere.

Sharon flicked on the lights, their soft, amber glow casting the room in a warm, inviting light.

Adele reminded herself: I’m visiting my girlfriend’s room. Act like… the dominant one!

    Yes, that was the key!

She settled onto the edge of Sharon’s bed, sinking into the plush mattress, her movements casual, her posture relaxed.

    This is nice…

Some people claimed that dreams were devoid of physical sensations. But that was simply… wrong. The human mind was capable of recreating any sensation, any experience, drawing from a vast library of memories, of stored data.

If you had eaten a cake that day, its frosting overly sweet, cloying… that sensation, that memory, would be readily available to your subconscious, ready to be woven into the fabric of your dreams.

As for those who claimed that their… “spicy dreams” lacked… realism… well, perhaps they needed to… expand their repertoire of experiences. Ahem.

Sharon closed the door, the soft click a familiar sound, a comforting ritual. When she was alone in the castle, she usually retreated to her room, seeking solace in its familiar comforts.

And now… with Adele… it was even more… appealing.

She wanted to keep Adele hidden, to protect her from the prying eyes of… the world.

She turned, her gaze settling on Adele, who was sitting on her bed, her posture relaxed, her expression… expectant?

Sharon’s cheeks flushed, her heart skipping a beat.

She sat down beside Adele, drawn by the unspoken invitation in Adele’s pink eyes, the warmth, the… desire? It was a look she had never seen before, not in the real Adele.

She felt a surge of… joy? Hope?

But she ignored the nagging sense of… wrongness. She attributed it to… their growing intimacy, the deepening of their… love?

Before she could even speak, Adele reached out, her hand taking Sharon’s, their fingers intertwining, their touch lingering, their warmth a silent expression of… something more.

Sharon’s body tensed, then relaxed, her hand melting into Adele’s grasp, her bones turning to liquid.

“Sharon,” Adele said, her voice soft yet playful, a smile curving her lips. “How long have we been… together?”

Sharon, her heart pounding in her chest, knew the answer. But she wanted to hear Adele say it, to confirm… their love.

“T-Two months…” she stammered, her cheeks burning.

Two months. It wasn’t long, but it wasn’t short either. Adele had been at the academy for just over two months, from early autumn to late autumn, winter fast approaching.

    She’s been… hypnotizing me since I arrived?

Adele shuddered, a wave of revulsion washing over her. Even Sharon’s beauty, her charm, couldn’t erase the feeling of… violation.

To be manipulated, to have her subconscious invaded, her will subverted… it was a crime.

But Sharon… she was just a lonely, insecure girl, her heart as pure and untouched as freshly fallen snow.

And their dreams, so far… they had been… innocent. Sweet. Romantic.

They had been like… a normal couple, exploring the academy, sharing secrets, holding hands, stealing kisses…

They had gone on dates, had explored the city, had shared bubble tea, had visited all the tourist attractions… Within a dream, anything was possible.

It was no wonder Sharon had become so… attached. So… delusional.

She had blurred the lines between reality and fantasy, had lost herself in a world… that didn’t exist.

And the irony was… Sharon, in her innocence, had never even considered anything… physical. Their relationship, even in her dreams, had remained… pure.

But Adele, now fully aware, her mind clear, her intentions… less than pure… well, she had other ideas.

She focused her attention on Sharon, her gaze intense, her smile… predatory.

Sharon, flustered by Adele’s scrutiny, tried to avert her gaze, but Adele’s other hand reached out, cupping her cheek, her fingers gently brushing against her lips.

“Adele…” Sharon whispered, her breath catching in her throat, her heart pounding with a mixture of anticipation and… fear?

Adele tilted her head, her long black hair cascading down her shoulders, her pink eyes sparkling with a playful curiosity.

“Is that… not allowed?” she asked, her voice a soft tease.

Sharon’s eyes widened, her breath hitching.

“…N-No… It’s not that…” She didn’t know what Adele was referring to, but… she couldn’t refuse her. Not Adele.

“So… it’s allowed?” Adele pressed, her smile widening, her gaze never leaving Sharon’s face.

She was playing a game, testing the boundaries, gauging Sharon’s… tolerance. And so far… she was pleased with the results.

Sharon, her cheeks burning, her breath ragged, nodded, her surrender complete.

    She’s so cute…

Adele’s eyes darkened, their pink hue intensifying, their shape… almost heart-shaped.

    “Then… I won’t hold back~”

And with that, she pushed Sharon onto the bed, straddling her waist, pinning her hands above her head.

Sharon’s silver-gray hair fanned out across the pillows, her lips parting in a soft gasp, her eyes widening with a mixture of surprise and… something else. Something that made Adele’s heart race.

So this is what it feels like… to be in control.

Adele had no intention of being the victim, not even in a dream, not even in Sharon’s domain. She would be the aggressor, the one who… took what she wanted.

And as long as Sharon didn’t resist… well, the possibilities were… endless.

But as she leaned in, her lips brushing against Sharon’s, the world around them flickered, the dream dissolving, the scenery fragmenting, like a computer program crashing, its data scattering, its reality… collapsing.

And then… she was alone, her hand reaching out to grasp… nothing.

    “Huh?”

    ………………

In the real world, in Adele’s dorm room…

Sharon woke with a start, her heart pounding in her chest, her breath ragged, her body trembling with a mixture of… excitement and… something else. Something that made her want to… hide.

She had fled, had retreated from the dream, from Adele’s touch, her mind overwhelmed by a wave of… something she couldn’t quite name.

    Slam!

The door to Adele’s room slammed shut, her footsteps a hurried patter as she retreated to the safety of her own room, her heart still racing, her cheeks still burning.

    “Ow… My head…”

Adele, rubbing her temples, slowly sat up, her mind foggy, her body aching with a dull, throbbing pain. But…

“I remember… I remember the dream,” she murmured, her gaze drifting towards her door, her expression a mixture of amusement and… something else.

It wasn’t the door she was looking at. It was the girl behind the door, the girl who was hiding, who was… running.

A slow, predatory smile curved her lips.

    “You can’t escape, my… dream girl~”

  • Come, Let Me Take You Home 42

No. 42 Searching for a Face to Bid Farewell

I quit my part-time job at the Taekwondo gym and dedicated myself to mastering the Pai family’s techniques under Luo Wei’s guidance every evening after school.

According to Ouyang Dati, the Pai family was a martial arts lineage that had existed in Yixian Province for over a century. They were known for their low profile and rarely accepted outsiders as disciples.

They didn’t prioritize bloodlines, but they valued talent. Anyone with good character who passed their rigorous training could become a formal member of the Pai family.

However, two years ago, this peaceful and unassuming family had been massacred.

It sounded like something out of a martial arts novel, but it was a harsh reality. On that fateful day, everyone in the Pai family, except for Pai Ge and his missing uncle, had been killed. Pai Ge, carrying the family’s wealth, had disguised himself as a delinquent and joined the Black Dragon Society, living a “difficult” life of gathering information and indulging in pleasures.

He hadn’t told me who their enemies were, nor did he intend to involve me in this matter. I didn’t press him for details.

Meanwhile, Huang Yingdie’s personality had changed after learning about her father’s situation.

She was less shy, less demanding, and less prone to tantrums.

She could go to the restroom by herself, answer questions without hesitation, and even thank the group leader for collecting her homework.

I could see her trying to adapt to this new reality.

Perhaps, like Yi Yao, she had been hiding her vulnerability behind a facade of aloofness and defiance.

However, one thing worried me: she still avoided interacting with boys.

She was somewhat okay with male teachers, but she often ignored her male classmates. When a boy in our class, who was both handsome and academically gifted, gave her a love letter, she returned it unopened in front of everyone. Within three days of transferring, she had offended most of the boys in our class.

Love letters were unheard of in our school. Boys in this era were generally shy. The bolder ones had followed Huang Qinghao’s path and joined gangs. So, the incident with the love letter quickly spread throughout the school, and her rejection cemented her image as an unattainable goddess in the minds of those single boys.

That’s how males were. The more unattainable something was, the more they desired it. Conversely, if a girl was too eager, too available, they wouldn’t cherish her.

“Just you wait, I’ll win her over.”

“I bet she rejected him because he’s not rich. Maybe we should ask that rich kid in our class to try.”

“No way. He spends all his money on games. He wouldn’t waste it on a girl. I think our class president has a better chance. He’s handsome and good at basketball.”

“Not necessarily. What if she likes younger guys? Maybe we should try a crossdresser.”

“Ew! Don’t even suggest that! We’re roommates! If you do that, we’re no longer friends.”

Rumors and speculations spread like wildfire. Everyone was trying to figure out what could win the heart of the “school beauty.”

Most ninth-graders were boarders. Bored and with too much time on their hands, they could milk a single topic for weeks.

Only I knew their efforts were futile.

Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t targeting any specific boy. I meant that all the boys in the school had no chance.

Xiaodie was suffering from a broken heart. She was still healing. Pursuing her now would only worsen her condition.

Her boyfriend had tried to drug and assault her, her friend had been stabbed, and she had just transferred to a new school. And now, these boys were writing her love letters and professing their undying love. Even an animal could tell they were only attracted to her looks, driven by hormones.

“Yi Yao, can you help me with this problem?”

It was Friday afternoon, and the teacher for the second period was absent, giving us a self-study session. Xiaodie, as usual, turned to me for help.

Despite her initial struggles, her grades had improved significantly since transferring from Nurturing Talent. As she put it, “It feels like I’ve gone from a primitive farming village to a modern metropolis. I feel so much more alive.”

“This triangle is equilateral. This side is equal to this side. You can use the Pythagorean theorem to calculate the lengths of the two sides. If they’re equal, you’ve proven it.”

“Do I need to use any formulas?”

“The cotangent formula. Page 241 in the textbook.”

“Oh…” She flipped to the page, her face lighting up with understanding. “I see! You’re a genius, Yi Yao.”

“You can do it too if you practice enough.”

These junior high problems were child’s play for me, like a high school student solving elementary school math.

The bell rang, signaling the end of the period.

    “Yes! PE!”

A few boys, carrying basketballs, rushed past me. One of them turned back at the doorway. “Yi Yao, want to play basketball later?”

I smiled. “Let me know if you need an extra player. Aren’t you guys always fighting for court space?”

“Heh, if we can’t get a court, we’ll just play with Class 12. Now that you’re on our side, we’re not afraid of anyone.”

He glanced at Huang Yingdie, then waved at me. “We’ll be going now.”

    “Be careful.”

I turned around and saw Xiaodie frowning at me.

    “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing!” She slammed her textbook shut, her voice petulant. “Yi Yao, can you come over for dinner tonight?”

She added, “Just the two of us. I want to learn how to cook from you.”

A week was enough time for two strangers to become close friends, especially since Xiaodie and I had already known each other for over a month.

Through countless conversations during breaks, we had learned more about each other.

I discovered that she was an anime fan, that she had a terrible sense of direction, and that she loved exploring new places.

Aloof, tsundere, innocent, yandere—she could switch between countless personalities depending on the situation. Sometimes, even I couldn’t tell which one was the real her. Or perhaps, she was simply a free spirit, unbound by labels.

She had once told me that her dream was to “live in a small but cozy home, where she could watch anime, attend conventions in cosplay, and explore the world with someone she loved.”

Huang Yingdie defied my expectations of a spoiled rich girl. She rarely spent money extravagantly, never asked her father for anything unless it was necessary, and never used her connections for personal gain. Apparently, few people in the Jiang Nan Gang, besides Huang Qinghao, knew she was the mayor’s daughter.

She had met Huang Qinghao through a coincidence similar to mine: her father had repeatedly broken his promise to take her out on weekends, so she had gone to an arcade in a fit of anger and met the local delinquents there.

“It’s just dinner for two. How complicated can it be?”

I capped my pen, stretched, and stood up.

She jumped up and hugged me, her arms wrapped around mine, her voice playful. “I want to learn everything you’re good at, Yi Yao.”

“I’m not good at anything special. Just basic home cooking.”

We left the classroom. The scorching sun made me realize that my skin would definitely get tanned if I stayed out too long.

Had I become so accustomed to being a girl that even my thought process had changed?

“Home cooking is fine. Training doesn’t start until eight. Just keep me company.”

Our relationship was somewhere between friendship and romance. She was incredibly dependent on me at school, and even at home, she would often message me on QQ, sharing everything from her father being harassed by reporters to what kind of underwear she was wearing. Although she claimed I was just her best friend, I couldn’t shake the feeling that our dynamic was a bit strange.

“I can keep you company, but I need to visit my mother at the hospital after school.”

Between a girlfriend and family, most people would choose family.

Besides, she wasn’t even my girlfriend.

    “Okay, I’ll come with you.”

To my surprise, she agreed readily. “Let’s get our story straight. What’s our relationship?”

    “Friends… I guess?”

“Okay, friends. How long have we known each other?”

    “A month?”

“Your mother wouldn’t be comfortable with that. We’re best friends who have known each other for six months.”

“Wait, my mother reads the newspapers. She knows who you are.”

“So what? Can’t I be friends with you for six months?”

    “Fine, six months it is…”

    “…”

    This was getting ridiculous.

  • Come, Let Me Take You Home 41

[Volume Title] Volume 2: Holding Your Hand Tightly

No. 41 Gently Untangling the Threads

We were in the basement of the entertainment complex.

Besides Pai Ge, I also saw Ouyang Dati and Lu Yibing, who had been absent for a while.

The other Black Dragon Society members, who usually filled the room, were nowhere to be seen. The basement, with its empty tables and chairs, felt strangely desolate.

“Let’s get straight to the point.”

Pai Ge gestured for us to sit around the largest poker table, then tossed two Joker cards onto the felt surface. “Upper Capital City is like these two Jokers. Everyone wants them, the highest bidder wins.”

“Naturally, we, the Black Dragon Society, have no interest in power struggles. Even if the entire Yixian Province collapses, we won’t bat an eye.”

    “Whoosh!”

He suddenly flicked a card towards Xiaodie, who caught it reflexively.

She flipped it over. It was the Ace of Hearts.

“Haha, you’re just like Yi Yao. Excellent reflexes and focus.” He chuckled, then took a sip of tea from his cup. “You must have noticed what’s happening with your father.”

    She nodded silently.

“Someone is targeting him. At this rate, his downfall is inevitable.”

Under Pai Ge’s enigmatic smile, Huang Yingdie finally spoke. “What do you need me to do?”

“No, no, little sister, you’ve misunderstood us from the start.”

He waved his hand dismissively. “We don’t interfere in politics. And even if we wanted to, it’s too late. You seem to be unaware of the reality of the situation. We didn’t call you and Yi Yao here to help your father.”

Her hands, resting on her lap, trembled slightly.

“You’re Yi Yao’s… friend? Let’s just say that. Yi Yao is one of us, and we don’t want her to get hurt. Do you understand?”

    “Pai Ge,” I interrupted, “I don’t quite understand…”

“Someone in this city has concrete evidence of your father’s corruption. They’re planning to expose him to the media, along with their allies. When that happens, not only your father, but all his associates in Upper Capital City will be destroyed. Yi Yao, if you’re still close to his daughter when that happens, you’ll be dragged down with them.”

    I was stunned.

In the other world, Huang Yingdie’s father had indeed been executed for corruption.

But not this early. I remembered his downfall happening in 2017. Why…

“Originally, those people wouldn’t have been able to touch him this year. But he made a fatal mistake.”

    “Mistake?”

Pai Ge gestured towards Ouyang Dati.

“Yi Yao, you remember the kidnapping incident, right?” Ouyang Dati sighed. “That organization had connections in Upper Capital City and the Golden Triangle. That’s why I assigned a sniper to protect you. But I didn’t expect the mayor to use all his resources to eliminate their entire network in the city within three days. He gave his enemies the perfect opportunity to strike.”

    So that’s what happened…

If I hadn’t saved Xiaodie, her father wouldn’t have taken such drastic measures, and his crimes wouldn’t have been exposed.

Because she lived, her father’s fate was altered.

My actions had inadvertently affected the entire city.

“Is there nothing we can do? Like destroying the evidence…”

“Politics is a complicated game. It would take three nights to explain everything. And he has indeed committed many unspeakable acts. Yi Yao, all I can tell you is that, within a week, his crimes will be exposed. And once public opinion turns against him, even Huang Tianqi won’t be able to save him.”

    “Those people?”

“Their identities are irrelevant. We have two issues to address. First, Huang Yingdie, what’s your plan when your father’s empire crumbles? Second, Yi Yao, you and Huang Yingdie have been in the news twice, portrayed as close friends. When her father is publicly condemned, you’ll inevitably be implicated. What will you do then?”

    Huang Yingdie stood up abruptly.

    “I understand.”

She kept her head down, her expression hidden.

Her voice was calm, eerily calm.

Even the usually clueless Xiaodie could understand the underlying message: your family is in trouble, and it’s affecting Yi Yao. We’re here to help, as friends.

“I just remembered I have something to do at home. I’ll be going now.”

She turned and walked towards the elevator, her head still bowed, her voice flat.

    “Xiaodie!”

I instinctively reached for her arm, but she pulled away. I looked at Pai Ge, who simply gestured for me to let her go.

    “Xiaodie! Wait!”

I squeezed into the elevator just as the doors were closing. I looked at her, her small frame trembling slightly, and said gently, “This isn’t your fault.”

    “I know…”

She suddenly threw her arms around me, burying her face in my shoulder. “I know… I knew it would happen someday… ever since I saw Dad accepting bribes…”

“I hate him so much, but why does my heart ache knowing he’s going to be taken away from me…”

The elevator was a small, enclosed space. I could smell her faint fragrance.

We hadn’t pressed any buttons, and the lights dimmed.

Only our soft breaths broke the silence.

    “Yi Yao…”

She whispered after a long silence.

    “Hmm?”

“Do you think death is scary?”

    “Yes.”

“My father wouldn’t have gone down this path if it weren’t for me… Two years ago, I was seriously ill. The treatment was expensive. He had no choice but to use his power to gather funds. The surgery was successful, but on the day I was discharged, I was forced to wear a fancy dress and attend a banquet for those who had helped me, to face the reporters. I’ve hated public appearances ever since.”

“I’d rather face hundreds of enemies than those hypocrites. They constantly remind me that I’m only alive because of their charity…”

“Once you start down this path, there’s no turning back. Dad has been telling me that he’s bought me a new house with his legitimate earnings and that I should move out soon. But… I can’t leave. If I leave too, he’ll have nothing left…”

She released me and wiped her tears. “Sorry for burdening you with my problems. I feel better now that I’ve said it out loud.”

    “It’s okay.”

I smiled faintly. “My family is in a similar situation. My mother doesn’t have much time left, and my father wants me to drop out of school and get a job to support the family.”

“Sounds like your family favors boys over girls.”

“They do. Our entire clan does.”

    “Then you…”

“I won’t give up. And neither will you.”

I scratched my cheek awkwardly. “Although I still don’t understand how we became so close.”

    “Fate.”

    “Yes, it must be fate.”

“Heehee, you have your cute moments, Yi Yao.”

She pressed the button for the ground floor.

    “What are you doing?”

She pushed me out of the elevator. “I want to go home alone.”

    The doors started to close.

“Don’t worry, everything will be fine. I survived a gunshot, you survived a stab wound. We’re both still here. Maybe tomorrow will be a better day.”

Her voice faded as the elevator descended.

    “How did it go?”

Pai Ge approached me, a deck of cards in his hand, his face cheerful.

I nodded. “She’ll be fine. She’s not the type to give up.”

“Honestly, I never expected your relationship to develop this way.” Ouyang Dati chimed in. “I thought you were just helping her for the money. But now, it seems like there’s something more. Yi Yao, are you falling for her?”

“Please, even if I was, she wouldn’t be interested.”

I walked back to the poker table, picked up Pai Ge’s teacup, and took a sip. “So, what do we do now?”

Pai Ge shrugged. “Huang Zhiqiang’s fate is sealed. We have neither the desire nor the ability to interfere in politics. The decision is yours.”

    “Mine?”

“Yes. That’s why we called Dati and Bing Bing here. Ouyang Dati has connections in the military. He can’t get involved in politics, but he can protect a girl. If you insist on saving Huang Yingdie, we can take her to a safe place, Bing Bing’s master’s place.”

He gestured towards the emotionless girl who was licking her lollipop.

Ouyang Dati sighed. “I can protect her, but it’s a remote mountain area. Sending a pampered girl to a place like that… I doubt she’ll last long. Look at Bing Bing. She was a perfectly normal girl, but martial arts training turned her into…”

    “Thud!”

A lollipop hit him squarely on the head.

“Don’t… don’t throw knives! Bing Bing, I’m sorry!”

Ignoring their antics, I looked at Pai Ge. “Are there any other options?”

“Other options? The other option is to do nothing. Let nature take its course.”

    “That’s an option?”

“Haha, I’m not finished. By ‘doing nothing,’ I mean Ouyang Dati won’t provide any protection. But don’t forget, Yi Yao, you’re a wild card.”

“You escaped from kidnappers, you saved Huang Yingdie from Huang Qinghao. My gut feeling tells me you have the power to change people’s fates.”

“You’re practically a member of the Pai family now. We’ll train you unconditionally.”

He walked over to me and patted my shoulder, a knowing smile on his face. “How you use the skills we teach you is entirely up to you.”

  • After Failing to Find Immortality 17

Chapter 17: A Flurry of Visitors, A Fearsome Aura

After seeing the old man off, peace returned to the courtyard.

Lin Tianlu was about to return to his study when he heard a knock on the door.

    “Who is it?”

He quickly walked over and opened the gate, seeing a young man in white robes standing outside, his demeanor refined and scholarly.

“May I ask who you are?”

“My name is Hu Sheng. I’m just a humble scholar from East Street.”

Hu Sheng smiled gently and bowed. “I heard that you are a man of great talent, Mr. Lin, so I came to pay you a visit. Seeing you now, you are truly impressive. I’m humbled by your presence.”

“You flatter me, Mr. Hu. You are also a man of great talent.”

Lin Tianlu smiled and returned the bow.

They exchanged pleasantries at the gate for a while. Soon, the scholar bade farewell and left.

Lin Tianlu returned to the courtyard, carrying two scrolls of poetry.

Hua Shuya, who was practicing her swordsmanship, looked up in surprise. “Senior, that man at the gate…”

“He just came to visit and brought some gifts.” Lin Tianlu smiled, holding up the scrolls. “Perhaps scholars have a natural affinity for each other.”

Hua Shuya nodded slightly and closed her eyes, focusing on her practice again.

    Knock, knock.

    Another knock on the door.

Lin Tianlu let out a soft exclamation, quickly put down the scrolls, and hurried to the gate.

“Mr. Lin, I’ve heard so much about you!” A burly man with a thick beard boomed with laughter. “I’m Liu the Butcher from Wuyuan Village. I came here specifically to pay you a visit!”

“It’s a pleasure to meet you—”

    A while later…

Lin Tianlu returned to the courtyard, carrying half a chicken.

Hua Shuya opened her eyes again, looking surprised. “Senior, that man was…”

    “A butcher.”

Well… that sounded a bit ambiguous.

Lin Tianlu thought for a moment, then rephrased, “He’s a butcher who slaughters chickens and pigs. He said he wanted to share some good fortune and brought this chicken as a gift.”

“You’ve become quite famous in Changling County, Senior.” Hua Shuya chuckled softly.

She had learned about the ghostly incident last night, but unfortunately, she hadn’t witnessed Senior’s heroic actions firsthand.

“I wonder what kind of strange rumors are circulating about me.”

Lin Tianlu shook his head with a smile.

That butcher, Liu, had claimed that he had charged into the fire and torn the evil ghost apart with his bare hands, his righteous aura shaking the heavens…

As if the ghost was a roasted chicken.

Ready to be torn apart at a moment’s notice.

    Knock, knock.

    Another knock on the door.

Lin Tianlu sighed, put down the chicken, and went to greet the visitor.

“Mr. Lin, I’m a teacher from Zhou’an Village.”

    “It’s a pleasure to meet you…”

“Mr. Lin, I’m Wang Anqing from the next street.”

    “Nice to meet you…”

A steady stream of visitors arrived, the courtyard bustling with activity.

Lin Tianlu’s face was starting to ache from smiling.

He hadn’t expected saving a few people would cause such a commotion in the town. It seemed the number of visitors wasn’t decreasing, but instead, a line was starting to form outside his gate.

“Mr. Lin, I’m from the county… uh?”

But as the middle-aged man approached and bowed, he suddenly felt a chill down his spine, his forehead breaking out in a cold sweat.

Glancing to the side, he saw a beautiful woman practicing swordsmanship in the courtyard. Her azure blade flashed, the wind whistling around her. Just a glimpse of her sharp gaze sent a shiver down his spine, his face turning pale. He quickly abandoned his greeting and excused himself.

    “Mr. Lin, it’s me, Dongbao!”

“Mr. Lin, I came here specifically… cough, cough, cough!”

    “Mr. Lin, I… uh!”

    “Mr… rua! Ugh!”

The number of visitors dwindled rapidly, and soon, the courtyard was quiet again. Only the last guest remained, covering his mouth as he stumbled away.

    Lin Tianlu watched in bewilderment.

    What was going on…

Was there a mass outbreak of some illness?

He turned to look at Hua Shuya, who was sitting calmly in the main hall, her hair neatly arranged. She tilted her head slightly. “Senior?”

“Miss Hua, do I smell bad?”

Hua Shuya shook her head quickly.

Lin Tianlu rubbed his chin, puzzled. “That’s strange. Why did that last visitor look like he was about to vomit?”

    “…”

The moon shone brightly in the night sky, peeking through the clouds.

Lin Tianlu sat in the pavilion, sipping his tea leisurely.

It was a rare moment of peace and quiet, and he wanted to enjoy it.

But Hua Shuya, sitting opposite him, frowned, a worried look on her face as she pondered silently.

The source of her concern was the Go board on the stone table.

She held a black stone in her hand, contemplating her next move, but she couldn’t seem to place it.

Although they had only played a few moves, the stone felt incredibly heavy, as if it weighed a thousand pounds.

After a long silence, Lin Tianlu couldn’t help but ask,

“Miss Hua, you’ve been holding that stone for a while now. Are you going to make a move?”

“P-please wait a moment, Senior!” Hua Shuya’s face flushed red, her voice trembling with a mixture of embarrassment and urgency.

“I… I’ll find the right spot soon!”

    Lin Tianlu was speechless.

There were only six stones on the board, three black and three white. Did she really need to think for so long?

Was she trying to invent some new, world-altering Go technique?

Seeing her struggling, Lin Tianlu sighed softly and pointed to the center of the board. “When in doubt, play the Tengen*.”

Hua Shuya’s eyes lit up, and she placed the black stone in the center, as if guided by an invisible force.

Lin Tianlu chuckled. “Finally, my turn.”

He picked up a white stone, about to place it.

But a soft gasp reached his ears. He looked up and was stunned to see the girl drenched in sweat, her clothes soaked as if she had just been pulled out of a well!

    “Miss Hua, what’s wrong?”

“Your guidance has been incredibly enlightening, Senior!” Hua Shuya sighed deeply, as if expelling all the impurities from her body. She felt refreshed and invigorated, her mind clear and sharp.

The moment she had started playing this game, she had stopped seeing the courtyard.

Instead, she saw the galaxy Go board from Mount Taiyi, where the stones were living beings, and the board was the universe. Each move felt like a battle against the laws of heaven and earth, a test of her will and a refinement of her soul.

That was why just three black stones had completely exhausted her.

And that last move… she had racked her brains, exhausted all her effort, but couldn’t find a single opportunity. It was like an insurmountable mountain, blocked by countless obstacles.

    But this Tengen move…

    It was perfect.

Hua Shuya felt a sense of completion, a surge of energy that made her want to shout with joy.

But as she opened her mouth, she realized she was still sitting in front of Senior. She quickly closed her lips, suppressing her excitement.

“Miss Hua, why don’t you go and freshen up?”

Lin Tianlu averted his gaze and coughed lightly. “The night wind is cold. Be careful not to catch a cold.”

Hua Shuya blinked, then looked down, as if realizing something. Her clothes were damp and translucent, her skin flushed, her slender waist accentuated by the faint outline of her undergarments.

    “…”

She froze, her face turning crimson. She covered her chest with her sleeves and quickly stood up, fleeing as if embarrassed.

But as she reached the corner, she stopped and turned around, her voice soft. “Senior, I’ll go… take a bath and change my clothes.”

    “Ahem! Go ahead.”

After she left, Lin Tianlu breathed a sigh of relief.

“Thankfully, this girl is gentle and well-mannered. If she had screamed, I would have been mortified.”

    “Hahaha! Master, I’m back!”

A booming laugh suddenly echoed through the night.

Mo Hong leaped over the wall and landed gracefully in the courtyard, reaching the pavilion in just two steps.

“You’re a bit late, Sir.” Lin Tianlu stood up and bowed with a smile, his eyes gleaming.

His light footwork was truly impressive.

It seemed this “master”… was worthy of the title!

“You’re right to blame me, Master. I lost track of time. I wanted to seek your guidance, so I had to prepare some fine food and wine. I searched the entire Changling County before finding something suitable.” Mo Hong chuckled, placing the wine flask and the carved wooden box on the stone table.

“I’ve only been gone for a day, and there are already so many interesting rumors circulating. It seems that young lady has been portrayed as a fearsome tigress with strict family rules… Hmm?”

He suddenly let out a soft exclamation, his eyes widening as he looked at the Go board. “This game…”

Lin Tianlu chuckled. “I just played a few casual games with Miss Hua to pass the time.”

    “This, this…”

The old man’s expression turned strange and grave, his face flickering. His breathing grew heavy.

Lin Tianlu quickly swept the stones off the board. “Don’t worry, Sir. It’s just a game played by a young man. Don’t take it seriously.”

But as the stones clattered onto the table, the old man’s eyes widened, his face flushing red.

He stared blankly for a moment, then collapsed onto a stool, muttering to himself, “How is this possible… how is this possible?!”

Seeing his sudden, strange behavior, Lin Tianlu’s heart sank.

Was this another patient with a hidden illness?

Why couldn’t he enjoy a peaceful game of Go? Why did everyone seem to relapse upon seeing the board?

Was he destined to develop a phobia of black and white stones?

But thankfully, the old man didn’t cough up blood or faint like Hua Shuya. After taking a few deep breaths, he gradually calmed down.

But his gaze towards Lin Tianlu was now filled with reverence.

“Your realm is truly beyond the reach of ordinary mortals, Master. This game… it’s truly extraordinary! I’ve never seen anything like it. That Hua girl is truly blessed to be able to discuss the Dao with you all night. It makes me envious.”

    Indeed.

There was probably no one else in the world who would spend half an hour playing Gomoku.

Lin Tianlu was startled. “You know Miss Hua, Sir?”

“Hehe~ As a wandering cultivator, I’ve met many people. I recognize the Thirteen Forms of the Breaking Army Sword that the Hua girl uses.” The old man chuckled, stroking his beard. “But I never imagined that she would have mastered her family’s swordsmanship to such a level at such a young age. She’s probably as skilled as her father now.”

“The Hua family, are they famous?”

“Have you just arrived in the Fengchen Kingdom, Master?”

“Indeed, as you said, Sir, my encounter with Miss Hua was just a coincidence. She was the one who recommended I settle down in Changling County.”

“I see.” The old man nodded in understanding. “The head of the Hua family is Zhengyang* Wang, a powerful figure renowned throughout the Fengchen Kingdom. He has six sons, each one a skilled martial artist, all dragons and phoenixes among men. That Hua girl must be his granddaughter.”

    Zhengyang Wang?

    Quite a prestigious title.

Lin Tianlu took a sip of his tea.

No wonder this girl was so wealthy, buying two mansions without batting an eye.

“You seem to have known all along, Master?”

“I’m just not interested in royalty and nobility.” Lin Tianlu shrugged. “And Miss Hua never boasted about her background.”

“I’m the one being superficial then.”

Mo Hong chuckled and raised his wine cup. “My apologies, Master. Let me toast you.”

He downed the wine in one gulp, a smile appearing on his lips. But then, his face turned red, and he started coughing violently, clutching his mouth.

He had choked on the wine, clearly trying to speak too soon.

    Lin Tianlu: “…”

This old man… was definitely not a martial arts master.

    (T/N)

Tengen* : Origin of Heaven(1), center point on a Go board(2)

Zhengyang*: 正阳 in Chinese can be broken down and interpreted as follows:

    1. 正 (Zhèng): This character can mean “correct,” “upright,” “straight,” “positive,” or “main.”
    2. 阳 (Yáng): This character typically refers to the concept of “yang” in Chinese philosophy, representing the sun, masculinity, brightness, and positive energy.

So Zhengyang Wang(King) could be also: “The Sun-Bright Sovereign” ,  “King of Righteous Light” , etc . I will use the term ‘Zhengyang’ since it might be used in something later on.

  • Dear, it’s time for your medicine! 48

Chapter 48: Which Damned Bastard Did This?

The chain, formed from writhing serpents, stretched into the depths of the void, leading to…

    A giant cage.

Countless chains, bound tightly around the cage, pulsed with a dark energy, their movements resembling a raging inferno.

Distorted shadows writhed within the black mist, their forms shifting and coalescing. He caught a whiff of blood, a coppery tang that made his stomach churn. Faint whispers, a chorus of maddening voices, echoed in his ears.

Pain lanced through his head. Qin Chu stared, his heart pounding in his chest.

He knew he had glimpsed something forbidden, something no human should ever witness.

    What… What was that?

The giant sphere, its surface covered in countless eyes, seemed to sense his gaze. The eyes, shifting slowly, focused on him.

He felt a thousand gazes piercing his flesh, his body reacting instinctively. A cacophony of screams filled his mind, grotesque images flashing before his eyes, strange energies coursing through his veins. His soul felt like it was being torn apart.

Pain, like a thousand cuts, ripped through his skin.

Countless eyes, resembling parasites, erupted on his flesh.

He glimpsed images, fragments of memories, filled with despair, madness, and an alien evil. They flooded his mind, threatening to shatter his sanity.

He felt something dark and sinister, an ancient entity, attempting to possess him, to use his body as a vessel for its return.

Then, his body convulsed, the horrifying visions receding like a tide.

It was as if it had all been a hallucination.

But he knew it was real. He covered his eyes, blood and tears seeping through his fingers. His clothes, soaked in cold sweat, clung to his skin. His muscles spasmed, his mind still reeling.

A knife protruded from his arm, blood flowing freely from the wound.

    Shaye had done it.

It had happened so quickly. She had seen him freeze, his body trembling, his eyes wide with terror. She had tried to snap him out of it, but he hadn’t responded. He hadn’t even heard her.

She had sensed his “Forced Calm” Ability activating repeatedly, desperately trying to suppress the mental assault, but it had been ineffective.

She had acted instinctively, choosing a brutal but effective solution. She had stabbed him, hoping the pain would shock him back to reality.

    It had worked.

She could sense the lingering taint of mental corruption within him.

She didn’t speak, her expression grim as she hovered beside him. She glanced at the scrolls, her brow furrowed. Who would have thought that the Holy Maiden’s chambers contained such dark, sinister objects?

After a long moment, Qin Chu took a deep breath, his trembling subsiding. He pulled out the knife, healing the wound with a simple Water Healing spell.

He glanced at the scrolls, his heart pounding. Loseweisse was more dangerous than he had realized.

A single scroll had almost destroyed him. And there were seven of them.

He didn’t know what they contained, but he had a premonition that if he left them here, if he allowed Loseweisse to continue her research, she would become his most formidable enemy.

He didn’t mention the scrolls, simply pocketing the storage rings.

But the images he had witnessed, the giant sphere with its countless eyes, the cage at the end of the chain… They were etched into his memory.

    What were those things?

What was imprisoned within that cage?

What did the remaining six scrolls represent?

He felt like he had stumbled into something far beyond his comprehension, something dangerous and terrifying.

He knew he couldn’t delve any deeper, not yet. He wouldn’t touch those scrolls again until he regained his previous strength.

He searched the rest of the room, but he couldn’t find the remaining six vials of Stunning Love.

He had assumed they were hidden behind the wards, but those wards had concealed something far more sinister.

The only remaining places to search were the desk, the wardrobe, and under the bed…

But Loseweisse was cautious. She wouldn’t leave such valuable items in such obvious locations. That was something Ekaterina would do…

Perhaps she carried the potion with her?

He pulled open a desk drawer, his thoughts elsewhere.

He found a photograph. He couldn’t tell who it was… It was the kind of face that would blend into a crowd, utterly forgettable.

Not ugly, per se. Ugliness was a distinctive feature, at least memorable.

But this person… average height, average build, average complexion, average features…

The word “ordinary” seemed to have been invented for this individual.

    Their face left no impression.

Only their smile, a slight upturn of the lips, hinted at something sinister, something unsettling.

Who was this person? Why did Loseweisse keep their photograph? It couldn’t be Jie Luo, the First Hero, could it?

He had only heard stories about Jie Luo. He had never seen his face.

But considering Loseweisse and Ekaterina’s infatuation with him, he must have been handsome, charismatic, a true heartthrob.

This person in the photograph didn’t fit the description.

Qin Chu shrugged, tossing the photograph aside.

He opened a metal box beneath the photograph, his hopes dwindling.

But he had come this far…

He lifted the lid. His face fell as he saw the box’s contents.

    Six pink vials, neatly arranged.

    Damn it!

He wanted to curse. Loseweisse had left the remaining vials of Stunning Love, such a valuable and dangerous potion, in her desk drawer?

He had wasted so much time searching, and it had been right under his nose all along.

He didn’t know what to say. Even Shaye facepalmed.

Meanwhile, at the Holy See, Loseweisse returned to her chambers, greeting everyone she encountered with a warm smile.

She treated even the lowliest nuns with respect, her demeanor a perfect example of Holy Maidenly conduct.

Her actions earned her widespread admiration. The nuns she spoke to blushed with excitement, their hearts fluttering at her attention.

But her mind was elsewhere. She was eager to hear the good news from Maggie and Sana.

However, when she reached her residence, she didn’t see them waiting for her.

She frowned. They were supposed to report to her immediately after completing their mission.

A sense of unease crept into her heart. Had something gone wrong?

It was impossible. Maggie and Sana might not be strong enough to defeat top-tier opponents, but dealing with a powerless Angelica should have been a simple task.

    Perhaps they had been delayed?

She tried to reassure herself as she retrieved her key, but as her hand touched the copper lock, she realized it was broken.

    Her face paled.

She flung the door open. Her mind reeled as she saw the state of her room.

It looked like it had been ransacked by a pack of huskies… Huskies were a breed of domesticated dogs named by the First Hero.

The bed was a mess. Clothes, both inner and outer garments, were scattered across the floor. The desk was overturned. The wardrobe’s contents were strewn about. Even the two magical wards on the ground and the wall had been disabled, the storage rings they had concealed gone.

She shuddered, then rushed upstairs, her movements frantic.

The three wards on the second floor had also been disabled, the storage rings missing.

She stumbled back, her strength draining away. She collapsed against the wall, her body shaking uncontrollably.

    It was all gone.

    Seven hundred million Mana…

    Thirty thousand Saint Quartz!

And most importantly… the seven divine scrolls.

Which damned bastard had done this?

  • Mistaken Era 73

    Chapter 73

Yu Ling’er reacted the fastest, immediately running to the nearby pond, scooping some water with a large lotus leaf, and splashing it onto Wei Jie’s face.

When the chilly water hit Wei Jie’s face, his body froze for a moment and the redness in his eyes faded slightly.

Cui Xiaoxiao saw this and realized her guess was correct – Wei Jie was not truly possessed, but had been affected by some kind of aphrodisiac powder!

She directly sheathed the Heaven-Smiting(Defying the Heavens) Sword and actively pounced towards Wei Jie.

Seeing Cui Xiaoxiao leap at him, Wei Jie didn’t dodge, instead extending his long arms to catch her.

Cui Xiaoxiao took the opportunity to embrace him tightly, locking her arms around his sturdy waist. At the same time, she chanted a water spell, summoning the pond water to rise up like a snake and coil around the two of them, lifting them into the air before dropping them straight into the pond.

After entering the pond water, Cui Xiaoxiao opened her eyes with effort and looked at the Wei Jie she was clinging to.

Surrounded by the chilly pond, the redness finally left Wei Jie’s eyes. However, the drawback of depleting his inner energy while injured also became apparent.

Now that his senses had returned, he didn’t even have the strength to swim in the water, relying entirely on Cui Xiaoxiao to support him.

Seeing that Wei Jie had just regained consciousness and seemed unable to catch his breath, Cui Xiaoxiao urgently sealed her lips over his to share her inner energy.

Amidst the rippling waves, their loose robes drifted and their long hair intertwined like swaying aquatic plants. Strings of bubbles like white pearls occasionally emerged from their tightly pressed lips. The tall man took the lead, tightly embracing the girl, like a black and white fish pair frolicking in the water…

Before they knew it, their fingers were intertwined as they swam through the depths of the pond, stirring up layers of ripples…

At this moment, Qin Lingxiao rushed to the edge of the pond and saw the rising bubbles and stirring ripples, his heart pounding anxiously.

He wanted to dive in to investigate, but as a renowned sword cultivator, he couldn’t swim, so he was unable to enter the water for now.

Fortunately, the two didn’t stay underwater for too long. When Cui Xiaoxiao realized Wei Jie had fully regained his senses, she chanted another water spell, coiling the water around them both to bring them back to shore.

By now, the consequences of Wei Jie’s reckless use of inner energy were fully apparent – despite Cui Xiaoxiao’s support, he could not even stand up.

Qin Lingxiao seized the opportunity to draw his qi sword again, intending to attack Wei Jie, but Cui Xiaoxiao waved her long sleeve to deflect his sword, angrily saying, “Can’t you see he was the victim of a sneak attack that caused him to lose his senses? Would you kill an innocent?”

However, Qin Lingxiao remained convinced of his previous suspicion and said angrily, “The demon bead is possessing Wei Jie! Even if this isn’t demonic possession, how can we be sure it won’t happen again? You should know best what atrocities Wei Jie will commit when his demonic nature erupts!”

Wei Jie slowly raised his head upon hearing this. He did not appear weak now, only coldly asking, “Oh? So you know what I’m like when demonically possessed?”

Qin Lingxiao froze, for of course he could not admit knowing the details.

In his past life, Wei Jie did suffer tremendous injustice, but Qin Lingxiao believed that after Wei Jie’s human nature was crushed by numerous blows, the demonic nature that erupted was terribly real!

Back then, even if his own father Qin Hezhen had made some mistakes, it did not warrant slaughtering the other disciples. Yet Wei Jie annihilated all four major sects in a rage, leaving no other survivors besides Qin Lingxiao and Ling Zhanshan.

Even at the risk of Cui Xiaoxiao’s resentment, Qin Lingxiao had to take preventive measures. He needed to strike Wei Jie’s Spiritual Platform while the demon bead had just possessed him, severing the root of the problem!

Of course, the deeper reason was that his father was still waiting for the life-prolonging effects of the wrathful demon bead. Qin Lingxiao had come to retrieve it.

If Wei Jie didn’t die, how could his father be saved?

Seeing Qin Lingxiao glaring but saying nothing, Wei Jie let out a cold snort and leaned weakly against Cui Xiaoxiao’s embrace.

No one knew better than him how comfortable Cui Xiaoxiao’s soft bosom was to lean on…

At this moment, Cui Xiaoxiao only felt distressed. As she wiped the water from Wei Jie’s cheeks, she insisted firmly, “You’re mistaken, the demon bead is really not on him!”

Qin Lingxiao felt she was making excuses for Wei Jie and said coldly, “If not on him, then where is it?”

Cui Xiaoxiao said slowly, “Whoever ambushed Wei Jie… that’s the one possessed by the demon bead…”

At this moment, Wei Jie also seemed to have caught his breath. Covering his chest, he recounted in a low voice what happened before the ambush, “A black-robed masked man secretly went to the back mountain. I discovered him and followed his trail here. We fought, but he suddenly threw some powder at me, causing me to lose my senses somehow and fall under his technique…”

Hearing this, Cui Xiaoxiao pondered for a moment, then slowly turned her head to look at the footprints leading towards the mountain cave, sighing regretfully, “Damn! We may have been tricked!”

Earlier, when following the footprints into the cave, she had been puzzled – why did the footprints only linger outside while there were none inside?

It turned out there was a sealed formation like the one in the Phoenix Secret Valley at the cave entrance, preventing anyone from casually entering except the resident bats and insects.

However, the five phoenix seals on her body just happened to be the key to unlocking the seal, so she had unknowingly done the mysterious person’s work of opening the cave lock!

Realizing this, she had a few fox tribesmen look after the fallen Wei Jie before re-entering the cave herself.

When Cui Xiaoxiao rushed into the cave this time, she found it seemed much dimmer than before, and the blue gemstone embedded in the phoenix statue at the top of the stone pillar had disappeared, leaving only an empty socket!

Cui Xiaoxiao’s suspicions were correct – although discovered by Wei Jie, that mysterious person had turned the situation around with a small ploy to steal what he really wanted!

Cui Xiaoxiao didn’t know what that blue gemstone was, but if the demon bead-possessed person had carefully planned to obtain it, it must be extremely important.

At this moment, there were more shocked cries from outside the cave. It turned out Wei Jie’s injuries were too severe and he had coughed up a large amount of blood!

It was clear that using his inner energy recklessly despite his injuries had caused further damage.

Seeing this, a look of delight appeared on Qin Lingxiao’s face. If Wei Jie’s Spiritual Platform was damaged beyond repair, he would be reduced to an ordinary person. Such an outcome might be even more satisfying than killing Wei Jie!

On the other hand, Tang Youshu’s eyes were red from panic, tears flowing as he wanted to rush back to the mountain to retrieve the hemostatic medicine he usually prepared for his master.

But if it was truly a severe depletion of inner energy, could a few handfuls of medicinal herbs really help?

Cui Xiaoxiao regretted her own lax cultivation, lamenting that at such a critical moment, she couldn’t even produce a Pill Core to save Wei Jie’s life.

Wei Jie forcibly suppressed the gushing blood flow and said to Cui Xiaoxiao, “First… find a secluded place for me. I need you to stabilize my meridians. No one can disturb us during that time… Let’s go to that cave over there.”

Cui Xiaoxiao knew she needed to quickly treat Wei Jie’s injuries. That cave would work, since it was where Master Tang Youshu would later lead them all into seclusion two hundred years from now.

Wei Jie was probably avoiding Qin Lingxiao as well as the new disciples on the mountain, so apart from two fox tribesmen guarding the entrance, no one else was allowed near.

According to Master Tang Youshu, this place gathered the spiritual energy of heaven and earth, making it ideal for building one’s foundation.

Cui Xiaoxiao had never treated anyone’s injuries before. When the two of them sat facing each other on the round boulder in the center of the cave, she didn’t know how to proceed in channeling her energy to heal him.

When she asked Wei Jie nervously, he leaned weakly against her and said faintly, “Just hold me for a bit first, let me stabilize my inner energy…”

So Cui Xiaoxiao obediently rested her chin on Wei Jie’s broad shoulder, allowing him to embrace her.

At this point of life and death, as long as he didn’t go too far, she could let him hold her for as long as needed.

However, this man who should have been frail took some… rather unrestrained liberties with his hands.

Cui Xiaoxiao suppressed her urge again and again until finally snatching back her loosened sash. Looking at him with seductive eyes, she said in a low voice, “This… is this some intimate healing technique from the Joyous Unity Sect? Where exactly is your blood flowing to?”

Wei Jie’s voice was now fading, showing no trace of the dexterity from before when undoing her sash, “You know I was affected by an aphrodisiac. Even after being immersed in water, some of the effects haven’t worn off yet… Perhaps if you help me fully dispel it, my qi depletion will be cured.”

Cui Xiaoxiao squinted at him, then suddenly pinched his cheeks and peered into his mouth – apart from a row of white teeth, his tongue bore fresh bite marks and traces of blood.

Just as she suspected, this Wei fellow had deliberately bitten his own tongue to cough up that frightening mouthful of blood!

Seeing through his trick, Cui Xiaoxiao was so angered she nearly condensed a water blade to chop him, “Were you trying to scare me to death? Don’t you know how worried I was, thinking you were really going to die! Or… was your ambush faked too?”

Wei Jie smiled and grasped her flailing fists, then showed her the bruise on the back of his head, “A bump this big, how could I have hit myself?… But the one who ambushed me earlier was really strange!”

Cui Xiaoxiao didn’t understand, “What was so strange about it?”

Wei Jie narrowed his purple eyes and said softly, “It was like encountering a doppelganger in the Illusion Mirror City of Luoyi. That person’s build was clearly shorter than me, yet his techniques and moves were exactly the same as mine, as if from the same lineage…”

Hearing this, Cui Xiaoxiao couldn’t help but furrow her brow.

Wei Jie’s skills incorporated the strengths of various schools with his own adaptations and refinements. Perhaps many techniques in the world were similar to his, but aside from the illusory doppelganger in the Mirror City, who else could perfectly mimic him?

As Cui Xiaoxiao sank into contemplation, Wei Jie stood up and squinted at the murals, also pausing when he saw the one depicting the Phoenix Tree from the Secret Realm.

However, what he really wanted to say wasn’t about those murals. The reason he had faked coughing up blood was to get this private moment with Cui Xiaoxiao, the only time he could voice his innermost doubts.

It was just that… what he wanted to say might not be something Cui Xiaoxiao wanted to hear…

Thinking of this, he looked at Cui Xiaoxiao, hesitated for a moment, and finally spoke, “Xiaoxiao, don’t you find someone rather strange?”

While the two conversed intimately in the cave, the people at the front mountain had been anxiously waiting.

Fortunately, their seclusion didn’t last too long. As the sky brightened, they emerged from the cave.

Yu Ling’er and Tang Youshu had been waiting at the entrance early on.

Qin Lingxiao had also stayed, wanting to see the extent of Wei Jie’s injuries now that the Talisman Sect’s disciples had gathered at the back mountain.

To Qin Lingxiao’s disappointment, Wei Jie’s condition seemed much improved – at the very least, he could walk out of the cave on his own.

Instead, it was Cui Xiaoxiao who appeared to have fallen seriously ill, her complexion slightly haggard. It seemed she had expended tremendous spiritual energy in treating Wei Jie’s injuries.

When they emerged from the cave, Cui Xiaoxiao’s eyes were reddened, perhaps from crying over her worries for Wei Jie until they became swollen.

Now, changes were afoot at the front mountain.

After this night, those disciples who had been vomiting and suffering diarrhea had recovered.

However, some of the disciples had quietly left the mountain once their bodies recovered, without a word.

After all, with the entire group of disciples falling violently ill after a single meal, it certainly seemed someone had poisoned the food. Most suspiciously, apart from Tang Youshu, including Cui Xiaoxiao, none of the Talisman Sect members showed any symptoms.

Some of the more perceptive individuals couldn’t help but become suspicious, feeling that Cui Xiaoxiao’s actions were too sinister! If she didn’t want to accept them, she could have just chased them away directly. Why resort to such underhanded means as laxatives?

No wonder the elders of the four major sects called her a demon – her thoughts and actions were truly devious and vicious!

When Cui Xiaoxiao heard from Tang Youshu about the departing disciples, she only absentmindedly nodded her head.

The Talisman Sect allowed freedom of coming and going. Since they hadn’t formally taken oaths as disciples, if they didn’t want to stay, they could just leave.

Cui Xiaoxiao knew that after leaving, these disciples would likely spread more rumors outside defaming her reputation, pushing her further towards being labeled as an evil demonic sect leader.

However, having taken on Wei Jie’s predetermined fate, it was inevitable that she would bear the title of Demon Lord and be slandered by others. Moreover, she did cause them to suffer diarrhea, so these insults weren’t exactly undeserved.

It was just a pity that enduring such slander still didn’t reveal who was possessed by the demon bead.

Therefore, Cui Xiaoxiao issued another order to depart, telling Qin Lingxiao, “Since none of these new disciples are possessed, I won’t keep you here any longer either. Please go elsewhere to continue your search.”

Of course, Qin Lingxiao was unwilling to leave. For some reason, he had a feeling the demon bead was still somewhere on Guistone Cliff.

Moreover, in the original timeline two hundred years ago, he had never entered that sealed cave in the back mountain before.

He clearly remembered that even Wei Jie had never gone into that formation-sealed cave.

Later, Wei Jie had even designated the back mountain as a forbidden area, and there was never any incident of someone breaking in to steal anything from the cave.

Yet in this lifetime, Cui Xiaoxiao had effortlessly broken through the cave’s formation, an unprecedented event compared to his past life…

Thinking of this, Qin Lingxiao was even more reluctant to leave. He felt that by staying, he could better assist Cui Xiaoxiao in dealing with any upcoming accidents.

However, Cui Xiaoxiao wasn’t consulting with him. After politely asking him to leave, she realized Qin Lingxiao didn’t seem to understand her meaning, so she could only bluntly say, “You’ve stayed here long enough. Please leave, or else Wei Jie may not be too pleased!”

Hearing this, Qin Lingxiao felt as if he had swallowed a fly. Just imagining Cui Xiaoxiao and Wei Jie alone together in that cave overnight left a bitter taste in his mouth.

Sometimes, he really wished he could immediately find the Flaming Underworld Deity statue and return to when he first met Cui Xiaoxiao. He would definitely not act so arrogant and leave such a poor impression in the young lady’s heart…

Seeing Cui Xiaoxiao’s weary appearance, Qin Lingxiao decided not to argue with her further. He also needed to return to Soaring Cloud Pavilion to check on his father, and find another way to search for the demon bead.

After driving away Qin Lingxiao, Cui Xiaoxiao was equally blunt in “advising” the other disciples who came to take oaths to leave as well.

The excuse was readily available – just eating a single meal caused them to violently vomit and suffer diarrhea, clearly showing their shallow foundations were unsuitable for inheriting the Talisman Sect’s legacy.

Failing to take them as disciples, these people immediately started cursing and scolding, bringing up Cui Xiaoxiao’s past demonic possession once more.

It seemed that when attempting to join, they didn’t care about Cui Xiaoxiao’s past as a demoness. But after failing, they immediately became righteous warriors again, hurling insults without fear of her demonic nature erupting.

Tang Youshu felt sorry for his master, while Wei Jie found it puzzling. After leaving the cave, he slept without waking, seemingly recovering his injuries through dreaming.

Now with everyone else gone from the mountain, cooking duties naturally fell back to Tang Youshu.

After asking Cui Xiaoxiao if she wanted beef soup, Tang Youshu cooked a pot and brought a small stone bowl to her study.

When he entered with the stone bowl, Cui Xiaoxiao was flipping through the cultivation legends she had borrowed from him, searching for any clues about the black phoenix and Flame Emperor.

However, she didn’t seem to be making much progress, with books scattered all over the floor.

Tang Youshu set down the beef soup and squatted to pick up the books Cui Xiaoxiao had thrown around, stacking them neatly.

Cui Xiaoxiao slouched over the table, lacking any patriarchal dignity as she dejectedly asked, “They’ve all left?”

Tang Youshu knew she was referring to the prospective disciples, so he hurriedly replied, “Most of them have gone. However, that Miss Ling Zhanshan insists on staying and seems determined to linger on the mountain. Seeing that you and Master appeared to have depleted your inner energies and not yet recovered, I didn’t mention it to you. She’ll probably leave once she gets bored of waiting around.”

Cui Xiaoxiao paid no mind to such trifling matters. She simply took the soup Tang Youshu poured for her, blew on it to cool it down, and drank a big mouthful.

But after the soup entered her mouth, Cui Xiaoxiao frowned tightly, swallowing it with difficulty before saying softly, “Lord Tang, this beef soup is bitter again…”

Tang Youshu was puzzled, “Bitter? It shouldn’t be. Ling’er had a bowl in the kitchen and said it tasted great!”

Cui Xiaoxiao scooped another bowl and handed it to him, “Here, don’t believe me? Try it yourself.”

Tang Youshu took the bowl suspiciously and drank a sip, immediately furrowing his brow as well – amidst the fresh taste of the beef soup was indeed an indescribable bitter flavor. It seemed Yu Ling’er had actually learned to flatter and lie, able to drink an entire bitter bowl while praising its taste…

Tang Youshu was used to his own cooking, so he apologized, “Ancestor, I’ve failed again. Should I make you another pot?”

Cui Xiaoxiao shook her head lazily, thinking for a moment before drawing the flame pattern from the gemstone in the cave onto a piece of paper. She asked, “You’ve read the most cultivation legends. Have you ever seen this pattern before?”

Tang Youshu studied it carefully for a while before shaking his head, “I’ve never seen it before. But… isn’t this the pattern from that missing gemstone in the cave?”

Cui Xiaoxiao nodded slowly, “I checked the local records of Guistone Cliff again. Apparently there’s a reason why it’s called Guistone Cliff. Legend says there’s a spirit stone within the mountain, an ancient divine artifact that can communicate with ghosts and spirits, which is why this place is named Guistone Cliff. Could that stolen gemstone be the legendary spirit stone?”

Tang Youshu replied, “Your conjecture makes sense, Ancestor. It’s quite possible.”

Cui Xiaoxiao poured herself a cup of tea to wash away the bitterness in her mouth, downing it in one gulp before drinking several more cups, looking more like guzzling fine wine than drinking tea.

Seeing the teapot was almost empty, Tang Youshu picked it up to go refill it with hot water from the kitchen.

However, Cui Xiaoxiao firmly pressed his hand down, her large eyes seeming to reminisce about the past as she looked through Tang Youshu towards someone in the distant unknown.

She said calmly, “Since we first met, time has passed without me realizing how long it’s been. But I still clearly remember the circumstances of our first encounter.”

Tang Youshu froze slightly before withdrawing his hand from under Cui Xiaoxiao’s and smiling faintly, “I also remember meeting you and Master. If not for you both, I would have died in the jaws of that Corpse-Eating Beast.”

Cui Xiaoxiao sighed, “Actually, on that day when you were rescued from the Corpse-Eating Beast, you had two choices before you – take me or Wei Jie as your master. I was Wei Jie’s master, and my performance that day was quite impressive. I treated you better too, yet you wholeheartedly chose to follow that cold and indifferent Wei Jie as your master…”

Tang Youshu seemed not to have expected his Ancestor to bring up such old history now, so he hastily apologized, “If possible, I would have taken you both as masters. But you looked so young then, Ancestor… I felt it would be improper to follow a lady master, please forgive your grandDisciple’s disrespect…”

Cui Xiaoxiao nodded again, seeming lost in her memories, “Later, as we traveled, why did we end up going to the Fox Tribe’s Mount Tuyun? Ah yes, I originally wanted to go to Soaring Cloud Pavilion to have Qin Lingxiao remove the shackles binding Wei Jie and me. Since I wasn’t good with maps, you were the guide who led us all the way to Mount Tuyun…”

Tang Youshu lowered his head in embarrassment and said softly, “It was my foolishness that nearly harmed you and Master…”

Cui Xiaoxiao gave a self-deprecating laugh, “How was it harmful? If we hadn’t gone to Mount Tuyun, how could Wei Jie and I have accidentally drunk the Celestial Spring water and greatly increased our cultivation bases? Speaking of that, it reminds me of the events in Luoyi City. At that time, not wanting to make trouble, I decided to leave the city with all of you. But you slipped up in front of your master and mentioned Prince Can’s invitation to his birthday banquet. So Wei Jie secretly went ahead to attend, staying behind to eventually expose Prince Can’s misdeeds.”

    Chapter 15: Whispers of Chaos

    “Buzz… buzz… buzz…”

    “Gurgle… gurgle… gurgle…”

“Ugh…” Unable to hold it back any longer, Kyoko leaned against the bathroom stall, retching violently.

She hadn’t eaten much in the past few days, so all that came up was watery bile.

“So noisy…” A cacophony of buzzing filled her ears, accompanied by a wave of dizziness. Kyoko stared at her reflection in the mirror, her eyes glazed over. Despite her lack of appetite, her cheeks were flushed, her complexion healthy.

    “What’s… what’s happening to me?”

The buzzing had started about three days ago. Or rather, she had started hearing strange, incomprehensible sounds.

    “Gurgle… gurgle…”

    “G! G!”

    “¥……¥#¥……&……&(……&”

Her eyes ached, her stomach felt like it was filled with lead, her temples throbbed, and a metallic taste filled her mouth.

    “So hot… I feel so sick…”

Kyoko curled up on the bathroom floor, her body wracked with discomfort.

    “Am I… am I dying?”

    ‘Hee hee hee…’

    “Who’s there?”

    ‘Whoosh… whoosh…’

    “Stop talking in my head!”

‘Kyoko… poor, pitiful Kyoko…’ A voice whispered from the depths of the Chaos.

“Who’s talking?” Kyoko forced her eyes open, but the bathroom was empty.

‘Oh, what a pitiful girl… hee hee hee…’ The voice was thick, viscous, filled with a chilling mirth.

“Ugh…” Another wave of nausea hit her, stronger this time. Kyoko vomited until her stomach was empty, acidic bile burning her throat.

“Gasp… gasp…” She struggled to breathe, her body trembling.

    “Knock, knock.”

“Kyoko, are you okay? You’ve been in there a long time.” A concerned voice called out from beyond the stall door. Kyoko didn’t want to answer.

“The long-distance run is about to start. We need to hurry.”

“Click.” Before she could finish, the stall door swung open. Kyoko emerged, her movements sluggish.

“You scared me! What took you so long?” Her classmate grabbed her hand, her face etched with worry. “Come on, let’s go.”

Long-distance run? Kyoko didn’t think she was in any condition to run.

Logically, she should ask Ms. Eve for permission to rest in the dormitory.

But her mind felt foggy, her thoughts disjointed.

    Ask for permission?

    Why?

If she didn’t, she would collapse. Collapse…

    So what if she collapsed?

    Everyone would worry. Worry…

    So what if they worried?

Worry… worry… worry… It wasn’t good to make everyone worry.

    Why not?

    Why?

    Why…?

    What…?

    I don’t know. I…

    I don’t know anything.

“Kyoko, what are you spacing out for?”

She vaguely heard Ms. Eve’s voice.

    Oh, it had already started.

    Started… what had started?

    “Run!”

Run? Ms. Eve wanted her to run?

    Then… she would run.

    Run… move your legs.

    Faster… faster…

“She’s so fast!” Kosan stared in disbelief as Kyoko, with a burst of speed, overtook her and everyone else.

She knew Kyoko was athletic, but this was ridiculous!

Kyoko ran like the wind, effortlessly leaving her classmates behind.

Soon, she had even lapped Bubbles, who was bringing up the rear.

“Huff… puff…” Bubbles, her short legs pumping furiously, felt a gust of wind as Kyoko zoomed past.

    “Kyo… Kyoko?”

Watching Kyoko disappear into the distance, Bubbles silently cheered herself on.

    “Go, Bubbles, go!”

    ………………………………………………………..

“Bubbles, wasn’t Kyoko amazing today?” Kosan asked as they walked back from the long-distance run.

    “…”

Bubbles lay sprawled on the grass, gasping for breath, unable to utter a single word.

“Talk about a gap.” Kosan glanced at Kyoko, who was surrounded by a group of girls, seemingly unfazed by the run, then back at Bubbles, who looked like a beached whale.

    “Bubbles… huff… is still young… huff… I’ll… I’ll get faster…” Bubbles managed to choke out between gasps.

‘Well, Bubbles, that depends on your natural talent… And weren’t you running a lap less than us?’ Kosan thought to herself, but she kept her thoughts to herself.

“Hmm?” Kosan noticed Kyoko saying something to the girls, then walking away from the group, heading towards the dormitory.

“Opportunity!” Kosan’s eyes lit up. She quickly made her way towards a certain boy.

Kyoko walked slowly, her legs heavy, her body aching. She felt like she could collapse at any moment.

Her head throbbed, her chest tightened, and the voices in her ears grew louder.

    “Buzz… buzz… buzz…”

    “Gurgle… gurgle… gurgle…”

The sound of a thousand flies buzzing, the nauseating gurgle of mud…

    “Kyoko…”

    “Kyoko, are you alright?”

Who… who was calling her name?

    “Kyoko!”

She felt a tug on her arm and looked up.

    “Oh, it’s Yo.”

“Kosan said you were heading back to the dorm alone. Are you… feeling sick?” The boy looked at her with concern.

    “Buzz… buzz… buzz…”

    “Gurgle… gurgle… gurgle…”

“So noisy…” Kyoko mumbled, her voice hollow.

“Huh?” The boy stared at her, his brow furrowed in confusion.

“Oh, um… I’m not feeling well.”

Kyoko forced a smile. “Yo, I need to get back to the dorm and rest. Can we talk later?”

    “Oh… okay.”

The boy hesitated for a moment. “Kyoko, I’m leaving in a few days.”

“I don’t want to say goodbye, but…” His gaze dimmed.

He wished he could stay with her, go to middle school with her, high school, and then…

“But… I believe in you, Kyoko.” He looked at her, his eyes filled with hope.

    Believe… believe in what?

“I know you can do it!”

Do what? What did he want her to do?

“If I can recover, there’s no reason why you can’t.”

‘He’s lying… hee hee hee… he’s lying…’ A viscous, sickeningly cheerful voice echoed in her mind.

    “I’ll miss you, Kyoko.”

‘He’s not interested in you anymore… ho ho ho…’

‘But… we have to move on.’

    ‘Liar!’

    “I won’t forget you, Kyoko.”

    ‘He’s lying! He’s lying!’

“So… let’s make a promise.” The boy forced a smile, his heart aching.

‘Rip his mouth apart… gouge out his eyes… hee hee hee… whoosh… whoosh…’

    “When you recover…”

    ‘Kill… kill… kill… kill… kill… kill… kill… kill… kill… kill… kill… kill… kill… kill… kill… kill… kill… kill… kill… kill… kill… kill…’

    “I’ll come…”

“Stop it!” Kyoko clapped her hands over her ears and ran, stumbling past the boy.

Chapter 14: Kyoko’s Bad Ending, Activated

“I was thinking about… biscuits! That’s right, biscuits!” Kyoko exclaimed, clapping her hands together. “Bubbles, I promise I’ll bring you back some Bear Biscuits!”

“Bear Biscuits?” Bubbles’ eyes lit up as she looked at Kyoko expectantly.

“Yes, I promise I’ll come back and visit you with biscuits.”

Kyoko held out her pinky finger. “Pinky promise?”

    “Okay!”

    Bubbles giggled happily. “Pinky promise!”

She linked her pinky with Kyoko’s. “Pinky swear…”

    “A hundred years,” Kyoko finished.

“No take-backs!” they shouted in unison.

On a sunny afternoon, Ms. Eve stretched, her back cracking as she finished cleaning the classroom.

She glanced out the window, watching the children playing in the courtyard, a wistful smile touching her lips.

“Youth is wasted on the young.”

“Don’t say that, Ms. Eve. If even a young woman like you feels that way, what about us old folks?”

“Captain Araki?” Ms. Eve turned around to see the middle-aged man standing in the doorway, his usual stern expression replaced with a rare smile.

    “Something good happen, Captain?”

“Something good… yes, indeed.” He held out a thick envelope. “The results of last month’s blood tests are in. We have good news.”

“Good news?” Ms. Eve’s heart skipped a beat. “What kind of good news?”

    “Congratulations, Ms. Eve.”

He didn’t keep her in suspense any longer. “One of the children’s Pollution Level has dropped below the threshold. He’s cleared to leave.”

“Five years… five years of hard work, and it finally paid off!”

Ms. Eve felt a wave of dizziness wash over her. She stumbled back, her hand reaching out to steady herself against the wall.

    Excitement, joy, relief…

A torrent of emotions surged through her.

“Who… who is it?” she asked, her voice trembling.

    …………………………………………………………….

“Nothing beats a cold glass of water after a good game!”

Kyoko gulped down the water, savoring the simple pleasure.

    “Kyoko.”

“Ms. Eve?” Kyoko jumped, turning to see Ms. Eve striding towards her.

“Go gather everyone. I have an important announcement to make.” Ms. Eve struggled to contain her excitement as she gave Kyoko instructions.

Kyoko sensed that something was different about Ms. Eve, but she couldn’t quite put her finger on it.

“Okay,” she replied, then ran off towards the courtyard.

“Back to the classroom, everyone! Back to the classroom!”

“Ms. Eve has something important to tell us!”

Soon, the classroom was filled with students.

“I apologize for interrupting your activities, but I have some wonderful news to share!” Ms. Eve beamed at them. “I just received word…”

She paused, taking a deep breath.

“One of you… has recovered! He’s… he’s going home!”

Silence descended upon the classroom. The joyous celebration Ms. Eve had anticipated never materialized.

The children exchanged confused glances, seemingly unmoved by the news.

Ms. Eve frowned, repeating her announcement. “Children, one of your classmates is going back to a normal life!”

Still, no one spoke. Some, like Bubbles, looked bewildered, as if they hadn’t understood.

Others, like Kosan and Kyoko, looked troubled, their faces etched with worry.

After a moment of silence, Kosan’s usual nonchalant expression returned.

    “Well, that’s wonderful news. Congratulations!”

Her voice was flat, devoid of any genuine emotion. Then, she raised her voice slightly. “So, Ms. Eve, who’s the lucky one?”

Ms. Eve’s heart sank. The children’s reaction disappointed her deeply.

‘What is this? Don’t they see what this means? Don’t they appreciate my efforts?’

‘This is a momentous occasion, a day to celebrate! Why are they so indifferent?’

‘Where’s the excitement? Where’s the gratitude? Where’s my applause?’

Ms. Eve gritted her teeth, her chest heaving with suppressed anger.

After a moment, she forced a smile, her expression strained. “Yo.”

    “Huh?”

The boy stared at her blankly, his mind struggling to catch up.

    “Congratulations, Yo.”

“Ms. Eve…” He gaped at her, speechless. “I-is it… me?”

“Ms. Eve!” Kyoko jumped to her feet. “There must be some mistake!”

“Yo… Yo, he… no, it can’t be Yo!” Panic laced her voice as she repeated herself over and over. “It’s not him.”

    “It’s not Yo.”

    “It can’t be.”

    “Impossible.”

    “It can’t…”

“Kyoko!” Ms. Eve’s sharp voice cut through Kyoko’s frantic ramblings. Kyoko looked at her, her eyes wide with fear.

“That’s enough! Get out!” Ms. Eve’s voice was cold, devoid of any warmth. Her eyes were dark, her gaze chilling.

    ‘She’s scary… Ms. Eve’s eyes are scary…’

Kyoko trembled, rooted to the spot.

“Crash!” Ms. Eve slammed her teacup onto the table, shattering it into pieces.

    “Get out!”

Silence descended upon the classroom. Then…

    “Waaaaahhhh!”

    “Sob… sniff… waaaaaahhhh!”

    “Boo hoo hoo…”

The younger children burst into tears, their faces pale with fear. The older ones looked on, their expressions a mixture of shock and apprehension.

Ms. Eve’s face was thunderous. Kyoko, her head bowed, walked out of the classroom without a word.

    ………………………………………………………………

“Kyoko…” Bubbles looked at her friend, her heart filled with worry.

Three days had passed since that incident. Ms. Eve had calmed down, returning to her usual kind and gentle self.

She had even apologized to Kyoko in front of the entire class the next day.

    “I’m sorry, Kyoko.”

“I was wrong to lose my temper. I shouldn’t have taken it out on you.”

“You’re still young, you don’t understand. I shouldn’t have expected so much from you.”

    “Please, forgive me.”

Ms. Eve had bowed her head sincerely.

“It’s okay, Ms. Eve,” Kyoko had replied, her voice subdued.

Bubbles had thought everything would go back to normal, that they could all be happy again.

    She was wrong.

Kyoko hadn’t smiled since that day.

She barely ate, she stopped playing soccer, she was back to her moping, lovesick self.

But… it was different. This time, it was different.

Even Bubbles, young as she was, could sense it. This wasn’t like the last time. Something was wrong with Kyoko.

Bubbles wanted to help her friend, but she couldn’t think of anything.

Yo was leaving. That was a fact.

Ms. Eve had said he would be leaving next week.

‘What do I do? What do I do?’ Bubbles wracked her brain, her brow furrowed in concentration.

A hand landed on her shoulder.

    “Kosan?”

“Stop stressing yourself out. Leave it to the ever-reliable Kosan.”

“You… you have a plan?” Bubbles’ eyes widened with hope.

“Well, it all depends on him.” Kosan gestured towards the boy, who was watching Kyoko with a worried expression.

    Chapter 13: Justice Man

    “Go, Justice Man!”

On the television screen, a man in a yellow jumpsuit, white cape, and a shiny bald head punched a formidable-looking enemy, sending him crashing to the ground.

“Wow, he’s so strong!” Bubbles exclaimed, her eyes sparkling as she sat on the floor with her classmates, watching their favorite animated show.

It was their nightly entertainment time, and tonight’s feature was a popular series about a man who, after undergoing “rigorous training,” transformed into Justice Man, a superhero dedicated to fighting evil.

The catch was that after gaining his incredible powers, the man… well, he lost all his hair. Give and take, that was the way of the world. But one thing was for sure, Justice Man was incredibly powerful.

A hero needed to be strong to fight villains, but this bald-headed man was ridiculously overpowered. No matter how strong the enemy, he always won with a single punch.

“Bubbles wants to be as strong as Justice Man someday!” Bubbles declared, pumping her fist in the air, her face flushed with excitement.

“Ugh, this show is so boring,” a bored voice drawled from behind them. Bubbles jumped.

“Kosan! It’s not boring! Justice Man is super cool!” Bubbles protested.

“Super cool?” Kosan stared at the cartoon superhero on the screen, his generic henchman face and shiny bald head, and frowned.

    “Bubbles, your taste is questionable.”

She tapped her chin thoughtfully. “What’s so cool about him?”

“Justice Man can defeat any enemy with one punch!” Bubbles puffed out her chest proudly.

“That just means he’s strong. Anything else?”

“Um… well…” Bubbles racked her brain.

“It doesn’t matter, as long as Bubbles likes it,” Kyoko interjected.

“Hmph, that’s not the point.” Kosan was about to retort when something on the screen caught her eye.

“Bear Biscuits!” she exclaimed. “They have a new flavor!”

Several children who had been looking down perked up at her words.

As the episode ended and the next one began, a commercial filled the gap.

On the screen, a cute cartoon bear poured honey onto a biscuit and took a bite, his face lighting up with delight.

“New flavor, new experience! Get yours today!” The anthropomorphic bear gave a thumbs-up and winked at the viewers.

    “Honey flavor…”

    “That looks good.”

“My dad bought me some before.”

    “I want some!”

“It looks so yummy!” Bubbles stared at the happy bear on the screen, her mouth watering.

“There’s a bakery in the city center that sells Bear Biscuits,” Kosan recalled. “Ugh, I’m craving them now!”

“You’re such a child,” Kyoko said dismissively, seeing Kosan’s eager expression.

“You’re a child too! Don’t you want any?” Kosan retorted.

“Not really,” Kyoko said nonchalantly. “Besides, I’m thirteen. Ms. Eve said I’ll be going to middle school soon.”

“Not like you, little Kosan.” Kyoko stood up, towering over Kosan.

“Ugh, you’re so mean!” Kosan glared at her. “Don’t forget to bring us some Bear Biscuits when you visit! And make sure they’re the new honey flavor!”

“Visit?” Kyoko looked at her, puzzled. “What do you mean?”

    “Aren’t you about to graduate?”

    “Yeah, so?”

“So…” Kosan hesitated. “Where are we right now?”

“Private Cherry Blossom Elementary School, duh. Have you forgotten already?” Kyoko looked at her with disdain.

“No, I mean…” Kosan stammered, “This is… elementary school. You’re going to middle school…”

“…” Kyoko froze, the realization hitting her like a ton of bricks.

Graduating from elementary school to middle school had seemed like such a simple, natural progression.

‘Oh, I’m going to be a middle schooler soon.’

That was the extent of her thoughts on the matter.

She had never considered the implications, the changes it would bring… until now.

“I… I’m going to middle school,” she said, her voice hollow.

“Kyoko?” Bubbles looked at her, confused by her sudden change in demeanor.

‘This idiot really hasn’t thought about it at all,’ Kosan realized, frowning.

She scanned the room, searching for a certain someone.

There he was, looking at Kyoko with concern.

Kosan quickly caught his eye and gave him a meaningful look.

“Oh my god! I almost forgot, I’m graduating soon! Time flies, doesn’t it? I’m going to miss you, Aze!”

Yo laughed, slinging an arm around his roommate’s shoulder.

“What are you talking about? We’re going to the same school, remember?” His roommate looked at him, puzzled.

“Come on, don’t be so cold!”

    “You’re the one being weird!”

As the two boys bickered, a look of relief washed over Kyoko’s face.

    That’s right, graduation meant separation.

Soon, she would be leaving her favorite teacher, her adorable Bubbles, her mischievous Kosan…

Kyoko knew why she was at this school. They were different, ostracized by normal society.

Their options were limited. Ms. Eve had mentioned that there weren’t many ‘special schools’ in the city.

Which meant… Private Cherry Blossom Elementary School had a middle school program!

‘Yo is graduating too. We’ll be together,’ she thought, her anxiety fading away.

It would be sad to leave everyone behind, but as long as Yo was with her, it would be okay.

As long as he was there, everything would be alright.

“Bubbles, you better not become one of those friends who ditches their friends for a boyfriend,” Kosan said, pointing at Kyoko with mock disapproval.

“Huh?” Bubbles tilted her head, confused.

“What are you talking about?” Kyoko snapped, her cheeks burning.

“Oh, come on, don’t deny it. You were just thinking how it wouldn’t matter if Bubbles left, as long as your boyfriend was still around.” Kosan gave Bubbles a sympathetic look. “Don’t worry, Bubbles, Kosan’s still here for you.”

    “I’ll take care of you!”

“That’s not true!” Kyoko protested, her face turning even redder.

    “Kyoko…”

Seeing Bubbles’ crestfallen expression, Kyoko quickly added, “Don’t listen to Kosan, she’s just teasing!”

Ignoring Kyoko’s pleading look, Kosan smirked.

“Then tell us, what were you thinking about just now?”
