    Chapter 20: The Life School

“I’m sorry, we don’t have the brandy you want here.” The bartender said politely. “We have fruit brandy, but we don’t have brandy that contains 10 kinds of fruits at the same time, because different fruits have different sugar contents, and mixing them together will affect the taste of the brandy. If you don’t mind, I can make you a glass with the specified fruits and pure brandy.”

“That won’t do.” Asker said regretfully. The formula clearly stated that it was fruit brandy, and it would not work to mix it with fruits after it was brewed.

Nuo’s pretty face was also full of frustration. The two had already run to no less than twenty taverns in the city, and none of them had the so-called “10 kinds of fruits blended brandy” in the formula, and the reasons for not having it were exactly the same.

“Do we really have to go to the winery to brew it ourselves?” Nuo asked, messing up her hair frantically. “It would be convenient if it was my family’s winery, I could find a brewing expert to find a way. If we have a winery here to brew it, it will take at least a week according to the normal process, right?”

Asker ignored her unconscious flaunting of wealth such as “my family’s winery” and said:

“Well, a week is not too long. For normal extraordinary people, it is normal to spend two or three years searching for formula materials.”

Of course, the “normal” here referred to NPCs.

“I know.” Nuo said distressedly. She was just feeling a sense of urgency because Eleanor was the first to become a level 1 extraordinary.

“In that case, we can only use a more radical method.” Asker said.

“What method?” Nuo’s eyes lit up.

“Take this.” Asker tossed her the topaz ring he had taken from the corpse last night. “Let’s go find someone from the Life School.”

“Is this the identity token of the Life School?” Nuo took the ring and turned it over to examine it, only to see two sentences engraved on the bottom of the gemstone ring.

    Beware, druids.

Many strokes through with a little axe, hew down and fell the hardest-timbered oak.

“Oh.” Asker also saw the sentence. “That’s the entry motto of the Life School: the oak tree is the sacred tree of the Life School, referring to the Life School itself; the little axe that is continuously swung refers to the seemingly insignificant but endless external dangers.”

“I understand.” Nuo felt that this sentence was very stylish, so she took out her precious notebook and copied the sentence on the title page of the notebook.

“What kind of people are in the Life School?” Reading the famous quote repeatedly, Nuo seemed to see an ancient and mysterious organization with a long history, going through wars, changes, and the vicissitudes of life. Countless extraordinary people sacrificed themselves one after another, just to keep the school standing in the long river of time.

“If I really have to label them.” Asker thought for a moment and said, “Farmers, poor, vegetarian, old-fashioned, a bunch of old men and women.”

“Uh.” Nuo felt that some kind of fantasy in her heart had been shattered.

After taking the Junburg subway for a few stops, the two soon arrived in front of a building. Nuo looked closely and saw that the sign hanging on the building read:

Constantinople Municipal Association of Landscape Architecture.

Passing through the porch, the two entered an open-air courtyard, where countless flower beds were separated by gravel roads, planted with a variety of exotic flowers.

There were researchers in white coats, gardeners in blue overalls, and some who were obviously nobles from their clothes, pointing at the flowers and talking about something.

Asker took Nuo and directly found the oldest lady at the scene, and took out the topaz ring to show her.

The old lady with a bewildered face: ???

“Sorry.” Asker said, then found an old man next to him and shook the ring in front of his eyes.

The old man with a puzzled look: ???

“Sorry.” Asker said, then turned to look for the next target. Finally, a middle-aged man in a gardener’s uniform couldn’t stand it anymore. He came out and pressed Asker’s shoulder, saying:

“Who are you, sir? Our association does not allow non-members to enter and exit at will.”

He dragged Asker to an empty corner. Nuo saw this and smiled bitterly and anxiously, but she could only follow quickly.

When they arrived at the corner, the middle-aged man lowered his voice and said:

“Who are you? How did you get this ring?”

“It’s like this.” Asker then told the story of how he spent 40 pounds at the extraordinary party to buy a note that pointed to 44 Doroc Road, then was attacked in the house, and finally killed the attacker in self-defense.

As for how he found this place, he lied that he found soil on the soles of the corpse’s boots in the house, so he suspected that it was someone in the imperial capital who was engaged in work related to flowers.

“So that’s how it is.” The middle-aged man took the Life I and Radiance I formulas and the topaz ring he handed over. “Thank you very much for bringing these things back, they are indeed from our Life School.”

He sighed faintly: “The deceased was also a member of our school. Recently, the Spirit School’s attacks on us have become more and more frequent, and we have had several conflicts in Constantinople.”

“Sir, are you not worried that we are spies from the Spirit School?” Nuo asked cautiously. She originally thought that the other party would be suspicious and defensive, and use various clever tests, just like in the legends. Unexpectedly, Asker just told the truth, and the other party immediately believed it.

“Not worried.” The middle-aged man said with a smile, “The Spirit School are all Spirit Sequence ability users, and the spirits all around are their eyes and ears, so they don’t need to hire spies at all.”

“You are here for the materials of Life I or Radiance I, right?” He looked at Asker again.

“That’s right.” Asker said frankly, “My companion here, she wants to obtain the potion materials for Life I, and currently lacks an auxiliary material, fruit brandy.”

“The main material comes from our deceased fellow member, right?” The middle-aged man asked solemnly. For a moment, Nuo thought that the other party was going to make a fuss, but then she saw Asker also ask seriously:

“That’s right, do you want to buy it back?”

“200 pounds.” The middle-aged man said, “Or the equivalent main material, 3 Flowers of the Eden Tree.”

“Deal, we choose the main material.” Asker nodded and said, then explained to the puzzled Nuo, “The extraordinary characteristics harvested from the corpse will retain the spiritual will of the deceased. If it is made into a potion and taken, the probability of losing control will be a little higher. For the Life School, they can obtain information from the remaining spiritual will and find clues about the murderer who killed the deceased, so this transaction is beneficial to both of us.”

“This young lady is still an ordinary person?” The middle-aged man looked at Nuo with interest.

“Yes, she is about to get started.” Asker said with a smile, “There is still a lot of esoteric knowledge that needs to be popularized to her.”

“I have a suggestion.” The middle-aged man said seriously, “I wonder if you would like to join our Life School?”

    “Me?” Nuo asked in surprise.

“Yes.” The middle-aged man nodded. “Join our Life School, and you will have the opportunity to access more Life Sequence formulas, as well as exchange and purchase corresponding main materials. If you have enough merit, our ‘Shepherd of Trees’ bloodline path can also be given to you.”

“Why choose me?” Nuo looked at Asker blankly, then at the middle-aged man, feeling as if a huge pie had fallen on her head. For a moment, she even had an unreal feeling.

“Because the Life School is in urgent need of fresh blood.” The middle-aged man said with a smile, “Don’t tell me you think that joining our school is like in the legends, where we still implement strict and lengthy political review, cautious and cumbersome character assessment, and one-way contact to ensure the secrecy of the master-disciple system? It used to be like that, but that system has been proven to be outdated. At least in the past hundred years, the expansion of our Life School has lagged far behind that of the Spirit School.”

“The Spirit School released the low-level formulas of the Undead Sequence, using the gimmick of becoming an extraordinary being to attract newcomers. This method will certainly attract a lot of people with impure minds, but the rapidly expanding scale can make up for these shortcomings. However, our former council of elders used the old way of managing families to manage the school, and the final result could only be that the speed of development lagged far behind.” The middle-aged man took out his mobile phone from his trouser pocket. “You two, would you like to add me as a friend?”

Your school is too up-to-date! Asker thought to himself, how is this different from the Life School he knew in his previous life? The two had no choice but to take out their mobile phones and exchange CM friends with the middle-aged man.

(CM, short for Community, is a mobile social software in the world of “Iron and Fire,” similar to a combination of WeChat and Renren. CM company is located in Solomon City on the Italian peninsula and is an international Internet company.)

The other party’s nickname was directly his name “Kieran Bonat,” Asker’s nickname was only his name “Asker,” and Nuo’s CM nickname was “Princess.Norah.”

Kieran and Asker were stunned for half a second, then turned to look at Nuo. The latter immediately blushed, with an embarrassed expression of shame and humiliation, and waved her hands in a panic to explain:

“That! The nickname of the CM account was created when I was a child! Because the nickname cannot be changed once it is set, and there are too many friends in the address book and I don’t want to delete them, so I have been using it until now…”

She almost couldn’t go on, covering her face as if she was about to cry. Who would have thought that just to join a secret organization, they would have to exchange CM friends!

Asker said with a straight face: “It’s okay, Your Highness, I also had a secondary school syndrome.”

“That’s right, Your Highness.” Kieran also said seriously, “I often call my daughter ‘little princess,’ and she seems to be very happy.”

“Don’t call me Your Highness.” Nuo said weakly, with an expression of resignation, “Just call me whatever you want.”

“Ahem.” Kieran coughed, “I’ll send you a mini program first. After you click on the link, fill out the application form inside. After the application is approved, I will pull you into the group chat of our Life School.”

With a pale expression, Nuo took her mobile phone and started to fill out the form. Asker chatted with Kieran for a while, discussing and exchanging some esoteric knowledge, and then left with Nuo.

Kieran looked at the application form submitted by Nuo on his mobile phone. Her name was “Nuo Valennis Licinius,” which was a classical Solomon name, and not many people in the Italian city-states would use this kind of name now. It was within his expectation that she had no family background in any extraordinary family.

So he clicked the approval button.

About two hours later, while he was working diligently in the flower bed, he suddenly received a call from Elder Boreas.

“Where is the new applicant?” The elder said seriously.

Kieran hurried to the entrance of the association building: “She should have left.”

“Good, if she makes any requests, contact me as soon as possible.” The elder said.

“That young lady, is she really some kind of princess?” Kieran heard something wrong with the elder’s tone, a feeling of being overly serious. A strange thought suddenly popped into his mind.

“She is not “Your Highness”” the Grand Elder said in a strange tone. After a long pause, he added, “However, she far surpasses her.”

Chapter 4: An Baili’s True Colors

School, synonymous with youth, innocence, and love. It was the whisper of the unseen sea brought by the wind, the beautiful bubble that entered one’s dreams. At school, Lu Li could temporarily transcend the gap between classes, sitting in a clean and bright classroom with his peers. Everyone wore the same uniform, and they talked not about connections and careers, but about pretty girls and unfinished homework.

When he was young, he despised school, finding his classmates childish and impulsive. He thought he was extraordinary, destined to achieve great things. But now, he missed school very much, yearning for this childishness, enjoying this simple and pure life.

It was the first day of class after the class change, and Lu Li arrived at school early. He didn’t like to be the last one to sit down under the watchful eyes of many people. He liked to curl up in a corner, expressing his protest to the world with silence.

As teenage girls in uniforms entered the classroom one after another, Lu Li’s dusty memories were gradually awakened. Their names and personalities were picked up from the dust.

This was Chuanhai No. 1 High School, one of the top key high schools in the entire country of Shenzhou. Compared to other high schools in small towns that focused on science, Chuanhai No. 1 High School was undoubtedly an anomaly. Its main subjects were liberal arts – literature, art, music, politics, ethics, law… The reason was simple: many of the students here were children of wealthy businessmen and descendants of powerful officials.

They didn’t need to worry about jobs or employment. It was that simple.

“Special recruits” like Lu Li, who entered the school through the government’s talent development program, were relatively rare. In the entire Sophomore Class 1, besides him, there was only An Baili. Yes, An Baili was also an “ordinary person” who entered the school through the talent development program. Her family shouldn’t be well-off, but he heard that her parents used to be respectable people. He didn’t know why their family had fallen on hard times.

Lu Li sat alone by the window, gazing at the blue sky and the cotton-like clouds. A few white birds flew across the sky, and a flicker of envy flashed in his eyes. He liked birds, or rather, he liked the feeling of freedom. In Shenzhou culture, the image of birds had always been given a transcendent meaning, either referring to beautiful love, freedom, or a lonely and vast state of mind. In short, it was a romantic symbol, the impractical ramblings of a scholar.

The empty seats in the classroom gradually welcomed their new owners. There were especially many girls in this liberal arts class, and very few boys. But Lu Li rarely had unrealistic fantasies, because he knew that being able to sit in the same classroom was just a superficial phenomenon. On the surface, they spoke the same language, but in reality, they were two completely different creatures.

He was poor, they were rich, that was all.

This pessimistic thought had haunted him all his life, and even after being reborn, it was not easy to change. Although poor, Lu Li was ambitious. He was a determined person who wouldn’t be swayed by external things. In Zou Yameng’s words, he was sometimes as stubborn as an alien bull.

The class monitor arrived late. The seats in front were all taken, so she could only walk dejectedly to the back row. Lu Li didn’t think she was a scheming person, because her displeasure was written all over her face. High school students of this age, more or less, had their own pride and reservations. The class monitor was obviously not one of them.

She passed by the window, the colorful sunlight falling on her delicate face, as beautiful as a classical oil painting. The frown on her face actually added a touch of Lin Daiyu-esque delicateness. The next second, her perpetually furrowed brows relaxed because she saw Lu Li, who seemed to be in a world of his own.

Please don’t misunderstand, the class monitor wasn’t close to him. The reason she was happy was simply that she had run into a rare acquaintance in this unfamiliar class, which gave her a sense of security. One of the biggest misconceptions in life was that when a gentle girl smiled at you, you thought, “She likes me.” Lu Li was certainly not that kind of person. He smiled back at the class monitor, but his mind was on other things.

    “The seat next to you…”

“It’s empty, please have a seat.” Lu Li pulled out the chair for her. He wished someone would sit in this seat, male or female, as long as it wasn’t An Baili.

    “Thank you.”

She thanked him politely, smoothing down her skirt before sitting down gracefully. She was wearing shiny leather shoes and thick, well-fitting stockings that covered her slender legs. However, Lu Li didn’t like girls who were too thin. He liked them to have some meat on their bones, and that included their legs. So his gaze only lingered on her fair and beautiful legs for a moment before landing on her side profile.

It was a little embarrassing to admit, but he still couldn’t remember the class monitor’s name.

The lines of her side profile were beautiful. The curve of her full forehead flowed smoothly to her brow bone, then dipped gracefully at the bridge of her nose, drawing one’s gaze to her delicate nose. Lu Li thought she would look good in classical makeup, with a touch of pink at the corners of her eyes, holding a round fan and singing, “Why does the autumn wind grieve for the painted fan?”

Lu Li remembered that she seemed to have organized a talent show for their class in their freshman year. She played the flute at the party, but Lu Li couldn’t remember it clearly. He wanted to recruit the class monitor to his production team and have her be in charge of the music. This would be a difficult task, and the first step was to figure out her name.

Of course, he couldn’t just ask directly, that would be too rude – they had been classmates for a year, and he didn’t even know the class monitor’s name, that was too impolite.

His gaze lingered a little too long, and the class monitor’s neck flushed slightly. Her blush wasn’t the bright red of the lotuses in the southern ponds, but a light, lovely pink that started from her neck, spread slowly to her ears, until she couldn’t take it anymore.

“What are you looking at? Don’t… Don’t look at me like that.” Her tone was an attempt at being tough, but her flushed cheeks made Lu Li want to laugh. This class monitor was so innocent and cute that she couldn’t even bear to be looked at. Perhaps this was the unique shyness of a young girl?

It was understandable. Chuanhai No. 1 High School had a seriously unbalanced gender ratio, with far more girls than boys. Most boys wouldn’t attend Chuanhai No. 1 High School. They would have gone to the affiliated high schools of universities early on. The boys who stayed here were mostly the second sons who didn’t have the right of inheritance in their families. He thought mischievously, the class monitor must have never been in close contact with a boy before. If he suddenly grabbed her hand, he could probably scare her.

Of course, he didn’t do that in the end.

“Class monitor, can you play the flute?” It didn’t have to be the flute, he added silently in his heart.

“Yes. You didn’t know?” The girl’s eyes were a little surprised. She had organized that party very successfully, and her flute solo was also perfect. Lu Li should have known. Unless, Lu Li had slipped away halfway through that day. Thinking of this, the class monitor’s eyes sharpened.

“Lu Li, the new semester starts today. As your class monitor, I won’t indulge you like I did last semester. I will strictly supervise you. You are not allowed to skip class, you are not allowed to go online, and you must hand in your homework on time…” The blush on her face faded, gradually replaced by a hint of authority.

“Or what? Call my parents?” Lu Li smiled cynically, his tone a mixture of self-deprecation, mockery, and something else.

The class monitor looked at Lu Li’s expression, and something seemed to be touched in her heart. She remembered when she first entered high school and was elected class monitor. She was determined not to disappoint the expectations of her teachers and parents and to be a competent class leader. All the students came from respectable families and treated her with superficial respect, except for Lu Li.

He blatantly skipped class and often went to the computer room to tinker with something. She heard that he even had shady connections with people outside of school. At first, of course, she was angry. She tried to persuade Lu Li, but was met with his disdain and contempt. Humiliated and angered, she decided to use her trump card as class monitor: call his parents.

Calling parents was something teachers didn’t like to do. Because the students of Chuanhai No. 1 High School all came from extraordinary backgrounds, teachers rarely interfered in matters outside of their studies. The school implemented a system of student autonomy, so the class monitor had the right to call parents. It was because of this that the class monitor learned about Lu Li’s tragic life and gradually gave up on forcing him. Her naturally soft heart made her turn a blind eye to Lu Li.

“The second year is almost over, and the third year will be all about preparing for the college entrance exam. This year’s study load is very heavy. You can’t slack off like you did last year.” The class monitor was very serious. “Your family is not well-off, so you should study hard and try to get into a good university.”

Lu Li knew why he had always had a bad relationship with this class monitor. It was because she always managed to hurt his pride without holding back. She was clearly the same age as him, but she always managed to lecture him from a moral high ground, using the calmness of a superior to whip him and motivate him. It reminded Lu Li of an old ox in the field.

Of course, he wouldn’t feel ashamed or embarrassed by such words now. He just said lightly, “Then what about my college tuition? More than a hundred thousand yuan a year, I can’t earn that much working part-time during the summer vacation. I can’t afford college anyway, so why bother working so hard?”

The class monitor became anxious, “You can’t give up on yourself like this. You, you can apply for a student loan if you don’t have money, you can, you can participate in the targeted employment program.” Her voice became weaker and weaker because she knew that neither of these methods was realistic. Student loans were not something orphans without guardians like Lu Li could apply for. His actions had no legal effect, and as for the targeted employment program… Would Lu Li be willing?

So she had to change her approach.

“If you study hard in the next two years, I’ll ask my family to pay for your four years of college tuition. My mother listens to me, she definitely won’t refuse.”

Her eyes were shining, as if she really thought this was a brilliant idea, that saving a lost teenager was a great accomplishment for her.

Lu Li didn’t want to get too involved with her. Just because she was naive didn’t mean her parents were. He and the class monitor were not related. Why would her parents help a poor kid for their daughter? Maybe her parents were compassionate and understanding people, but Lu Li wasn’t.

“Actually, I have a plan to earn enough for tuition. I’ve been working on it since last year.” Lu Li finally revealed his fangs. “I’m making a game. If it sells well, I can easily earn enough for tuition. But I need someone who knows music, especially classical music.”

“…That’s what you were doing when you skipped class last year?”

    “Uh-huh.”

“And what about your shady connections with people outside of school?”

“Those were fellow enthusiasts I contacted. Unfortunately, most of them were just half-baked amateurs. The few who were truly skilled wanted me to pay them.” Lu Li smiled bitterly. “Where would I get the money? I could only come to you, Class Monitor, hoping to exploit your musical talent for free.”

The class monitor’s chest puffed up slightly. She was a little proud of Lu Li’s compliment. Unfortunately, her chest wasn’t very impressive, so this action only made her look childish. Lu Li found it easy to deal with a girl like her – it was best to be honest when dealing with two types of people: the very innocent and the very intelligent. Being honest with the former would relieve a lot of pressure, while being honest with the latter would add a lot of pressure.

“Then I’ll agree to help you.” She agreed readily.

“Agree to what?” A voice Lu Li knew all too well rang out.

An Baili entered the classroom from the back door like a ghost. She wasn’t deliberately dressed up today. She was still the same old An Baili with her bangs, pigtails, and black-rimmed glasses. Her eyes, hidden behind the thick lenses, would occasionally dart towards Lu Li. An Baili once said that she wasn’t actually nearsighted. The glasses she wore were just plain glass that she had purposely thickened to avoid trouble.

As for what kind of trouble, Lu Li didn’t know. The student management at Chuanhai No. 1 High School was quite strict. There were rarely any conflicts between students on campus. An Baili couldn’t possibly be in any trouble.

“Hello, classmate.” The class monitor was obviously startled. “Are you also assigned to this class? My name is Chu Jingyi, nice to meet you.” The girl was so frightened that she was trembling. She was really timid.

She must have been terrified before the plane crash in her previous life, right? Thinking of that scene, Lu Li couldn’t help but feel a pang of sadness. Although he didn’t like the class monitor, he didn’t want to see an innocent girl die in a disaster.

He silently repeated the name Chu Jingyi a few times in his heart, and a smile appeared on his face, “Hello, classmate, I’m Lu Li.” He pretended very well because he was a natural at putting on an act. Many times, the troubles encountered in life could be solved simply by pretending to understand or playing dumb.

But An Baili could always see through his disguise. And she always called him a heartless man.

Unfortunately, this time, An Baili didn’t expect Lu Li to retain the memories of his previous life. She said with feigned excitement, “My name is An Baili. Nice to meet you… both.” She hid it well, at least Chu Jingyi didn’t notice anything.

There was an empty seat in front of Chu Jingyi, but An Baili didn’t take it. Instead, she stared at Chu Jingyi and pretended to be troubled, “Sister Jingyi, I, my lungs aren’t very good, can I sit somewhere with better ventilation?” These words made Lu Li’s mouth twitch. An Baili, An Baili, you’re actually a year older than Chu Jingyi, right? How could you bring yourself to call her “sister”?

Chu Jingyi gasped and immediately wanted to get up and give up her seat, but Lu Li stood up first, “In that case, An Baili, why don’t you take my seat? I’m closer to the window, the air is better here.”

An Baili became a little anxious, “But it’s too cold over there.” It was such a lame excuse, only a fool wouldn’t see through it.

Chu Jingyi looked at Lu Li accusingly, “You want her to sit so close to the window and catch a cold? If she gets sick from the cold, every time… It’ll be very painful, don’t you have any empathy?”

Lu Li looked at her with pity, but he could only go along with Chu Jingyi’s words, “Oh, is that so? I’m sorry, I wasn’t thinking straight. Then why don’t you take my seat, Jingyi, and let An Baili take your seat? That way, you can block the wind a little, and it’s easier for girls to look after each other.”

He deliberately called the class monitor “Jingyi” to discourage An Baili and make her give up. They had all been given a second chance, couldn’t they just live their own lives? Why did she have to stick to him like glue? His goal was indeed achieved, but it caused different reactions from the two girls.

Chu Jingyi’s ears turned pink again. She felt that Lu Li’s address was too frivolous, but she was too embarrassed to correct him in front of a third person. She was thinner-skinned than he had imagined. She was so assertive and confident when she was the class monitor, but now she was so easily embarrassed. It was really baffling.

An Baili, on the other hand, was much more interesting. She wanted to be angry but didn’t dare to show it. Her eyes darted between the two of them, her lips moving constantly, but she held back her words. Her acting was terrible, but only she and Chu Jingyi didn’t know it.

Lu Li took his bag and sat down in the empty seat in front of Chu Jingyi. He nodded and smiled at the unfamiliar girl beside him as a greeting, not expecting a response. He sat down straight and looked at the blackboard without squinting. An Baili didn’t get her wish in the end. She sat down angrily in Chu Jingyi’s original seat, making the class monitor wonder if she had said something wrong.

Although Lu Li sat upright, his mind was still on the two girls behind him. An Baili was indeed more scheming. She quickly adjusted her emotions and asked Chu Jingyi what she had agreed to with Lu Li.

When she heard that Lu Li had invited Chu Jingyi to be in charge of the game’s music production, the smile on An Baili’s face could no longer be maintained. That was supposed to be her place, one of the memories she shared with Lu Li. Where did this woman, who had already disappeared from his memory, come from?

Perhaps it was because of their unfortunate backgrounds, but Lu Li felt a natural closeness to An Baili. When she was ostracized and oppressed, it was Lu Li who stood up for her, took her for walks, taught her how to play the leaf flute, and told her that she was actually very beautiful. In their senior year, Lu Li braved the heavy rain and took her out of school just to show her the source of the rainbow after the rain.

For An Baili, the first sixteen years of her life were filled with dark clouds. The world was gray and dilapidated, and she couldn’t find any joy in life. She even had suicidal thoughts. But ever since she met Lu Li, he had become a ray of light that pierced through the dark clouds, making An Baili irresistibly drawn to him like a moth to a flame.

She knew that Lu Li didn’t love her that much, and she knew the real reason – the deeper reason that even Lu Li himself didn’t know. But she still couldn’t help but taste the poison called Lu Li as if she were sacrificing herself. Lu Li was hers, and hers alone. And she could only be Lu Li’s. No one, no matter who it was, was allowed to come between them.

No matter who it was, Zou Yameng, Chen Jianing, Wen Hupo, or any other random woman, they were all her enemies.

In a corner where Chu Jingyi couldn’t see, An Baili’s eyes turned cold and sharp. She had never shown this side of herself to Lu Li, not until the last minute of her previous life.

  • I Don’t Want to Be Reborn With You 3

Chapter 3: An Old Acquaintance Appears

Material is the carrier of spirit, and the body is naturally the carrier of the soul. To put it in a roundabout way, the soul influences the body, and the body reacts to the soul—Lu Li didn’t know if he had returned to the age of sixteen, or if his sixteen-year-old self had gained the memories of the future. He was more passionate, more straightforward, and more resolute than his true self. This was the spirit of a young man, a rare quality that should have disappeared with time and the wear and tear of society.

    He didn’t dislike this change.

Back in the low-rent apartment, Zou Yameng made a simple meal of scrambled eggs with tomatoes, stir-fried pork, and braised eggplant. The two sat around the small wooden table, chewing quietly.

Lu Li loved Sister Yameng’s cooking. It had a very homey flavor, warm and comforting. His favorite thing to do when he was young was to sit in the quiet room, listening to the patter of rain, and savor the sweet and sour pork ribs his sister made. He liked them a little sour. Unfortunately, after Sister Yameng’s suicide in his previous life, he never had the chance to enjoy them again.

Lost in his thoughts, his chopsticks bumped against Zou Yameng’s. Their eyes met. Zou Yameng felt that Lu Li was a little different today, more confident than before, which gave her a dangerous premonition. She felt that she should fulfill her educational responsibility as an older sister.

“No puppy love.” After holding it in for a long time, she blurted out.

    “Huh?”

“You’re still young, no puppy love.” She forced herself to look directly at Lu Li. “You can’t just say those things to girls, you know? Boys should also respect themselves and love themselves, don’t be a scumbag, always sweet-talking and coaxing people, understand?”

But those words were from the bottom of Lu Li’s heart. He was stunned for a moment, then nodded slightly. He had always been used to listening to Zou Yameng. Sister Yameng respected him very much. Since he entered high school, she rarely spoke to him in a commanding or instructive tone. Did he make her feel insecure because of his behavior?

Lu Li was the one who washed the dishes. He could cook too. When he was a child, the government assigned him a guardian, a snobbish aunt who took the government subsidy but rarely took care of him. Little Lu Li had to learn to cook for himself, fumbling with the kitchen utensils alongside Zou Yameng. He even got a big burn on his arm from the hot oil once.

He still remembered that Zou Yameng was much calmer than other kids her age. She took him to the community clinic, stopping and asking for directions along the unfamiliar streets, comforting him all the while. It wasn’t until later, he didn’t know when, that Sister Yameng suddenly said she could cook and told him to eat the food she made from now on. Only then did he realize why she had been wearing long sleeves in the heat.

After dinner, Zou Yameng went back to her room next door. She used to love hanging out in her brother’s room, but one day she noticed the shy and embarrassed look in junior high school Lu Li’s eyes when he saw her wearing a camisole, and some other desire she couldn’t understand. Since then, she rarely stayed at Lu Li’s place.

Lu Li took a nap and then went out to the milk tea shop where he worked part-time. The kind shop owner paid him an extra five hundred yuan and told him to study hard, saying he could come back to work during the next vacation. Holding the “huge sum” of two thousand five hundred yuan, he was a little conflicted.

He knew he was going to college. Universities in Shenzhou were all private and terribly expensive. Good grades weren’t enough to go to college. A poor kid like him had to go through the government’s special program, which meant targeted employment after graduation. But he didn’t like that kind of work, so he had to save up for the first year’s tuition himself. This two thousand five hundred yuan should be deposited in his little piggy bank.

But he thought of the class monitor’s words, and then he thought of Sister Zou Yameng. As if possessed, he walked towards the phone store.

Zou Yameng had a second-hand phone. Because she needed to keep in touch with her team, she gritted her teeth and bought an old one from a wealthy classmate who didn’t want it anymore. The second-hand phone was in terrible condition. It was obvious that the previous owner didn’t take good care of it, and the system was very laggy, often driving Sister Yameng crazy.

He chose a previous generation flagship phone that cost two thousand three hundred and ninety-nine yuan and asked the clerk to wrap it up, planning to surprise his sister. Suddenly, he felt someone watching him. He turned around and saw a girl who was both unexpected and not.

    It was An Baili.

It wasn’t unexpected because An Baili lived near this street, so it was normal to run into her here.

It was unexpected because An Baili, who was supposed to be an ugly duckling in his memory, had actually tidied herself up a bit – she had brushed her thick bangs aside, untied her pigtails, and simply revealed her bare face, which was surprisingly stunning. He had to admit, An Baili was really beautiful in her teenage years.

He always felt that An Baili was a good girl, but maybe they weren’t right for each other. Two people starved for love coming together would only lead to endless friction and torment. Moreover, the current Lu Li was a little afraid of the young An Baili. He was afraid of her disregard for life. The usually weak An Baili actually dragged him to hell with her after he decided to divorce.

Lu Li’s panic only lasted for a moment. He quickly realized that the current An Baili shouldn’t know him yet. He pretended to look around casually, his gaze sweeping past An Baili, but his heart was pounding:

Why was she different from how he remembered? And why was she looking at him? Please, don’t look at me, don’t look at me, pretend I don’t exist, pretend I don’t exist.

Murphy’s Law states that the things you least want to happen are the ones that will happen. An Baili walked towards him with a suppressed smile, not noticing Lu Li’s twitching eyebrows at all.

“Classmate, are you choosing a phone?” Her voice was very pleasant, but to Lu Li, it was the last voice he wanted to hear.

“Uh-huh.” He was a little perfunctory, successfully feigning the shyness and introversion of a teenage boy.

An Baili didn’t say anything more. Lu Li glanced at her curiously, only to see the girl staring at him intently. The emotions in her eyes were all too familiar to him, and they sent chills down his spine. A ridiculous possibility surfaced in his mind.

Could it be that An Baili was reborn too? Otherwise, why would she be here? Why would she dress up?

Playing dumb had always been Lu Li’s forte. He pretended not to see the burning gaze of the person beside him, took the package from the clerk, and walked out with his head down. An Baili followed behind him unhurriedly. If he didn’t have the memories of his previous life, he would never have guessed that An Baili was following him.

Although An Baili was usually clueless, she had a keen sense when it came to matters between men and women, like a special edition Sherlock Holmes. Back in school, An Baili would secretly throw away the love letters he received, and she would always show up when he was alone with other girls. At that time, Lu Li thought that An Baili was helping him, but now that he thought about it, he realized that it was just a reflection of her morbid possessiveness.

He really didn’t want to be reborn with An Baili.

He really didn’t want to have anything to do with her anymore.

Lu Li wasn’t a pushover either. He took several turns through the streets and finally shook off An Baili. By this point, he was certain that An Baili was definitely reborn. The good news was that An Baili didn’t know that he was reborn too.

He returned to the low-rent apartment, thought for a moment, then walked to Sister Yameng’s room and opened the door with his key. By the way, he and Sister Yameng both had keys to each other’s apartments. They had always been family. Sister Yameng, like him, didn’t have a responsible guardian, so they had lived together, eaten together, slept together, and done everything together since childhood.

The little boys in the neighborhood even teased that he and Zou Yameng were a shy husband and wife. Zou Yameng was so angry that she chased them down ten streets.

“Sister, I have a present for you.” The best time to give a gift wasn’t now, but on a holiday or birthday. But Lu Li couldn’t help but present her with the best thing he could find. He didn’t want to wait another moment. She deserved it.

Zou Yameng was watching a variety show on her phone. It was actually about wives’ self-cultivation. Seeing Lu Li approaching, she panicked and returned to the main menu, looking at Lu Li with a blank and innocent expression. Lu Li knew that his sister had two dreams. One was to win a national championship, and the other was to be a good wife. In his previous life, both of Zou Yameng’s dreams were shattered.

She had shouted out these two dreams while drunk on the day of his college graduation. He had never seen Sister Yameng drunk before. That was the only time. At that time, he and An Baili had already confirmed their relationship, and Sister Yameng was the first to bless them.

“What present? I won’t accept anything too expensive.” Her face was still flushed, radiant.

Seeing Lu Li take out the new phone from the package, the first expression on Sister Yameng’s face was not joy but anger.

“Why did you buy me a phone?” She was as nervous as a little housekeeper. “How much did this cost? Where did you get the money? Why didn’t you keep it for yourself to use at school? You, you, you…”

Lu Li found that he enjoyed listening to her nagging more and more. He smiled and sat down next to Zou Yameng, stopping his sister who was about to return the phone. He put on a pitiful tone, “Don’t you want the phone I bought you?”

“I, it’s not that I don’t want it.” As expected, Sister Yameng’s expression softened immediately. “It’s just, well, I’m very happy and touched. But I also feel bad for you. Li, why don’t you keep this phone for yourself?”

As long as he acted like an abandoned puppy, saying nothing, just sitting there pitifully, Sister Yameng would be at a loss and easily persuaded. This was a little trick he had learned.

“I’ll just use your old phone, Sister.” He hugged Zou Yameng. “I still prefer to use Sister Yameng’s old phone. It makes me feel a sense of belonging.”

Zou Yameng pushed him away, “Are you dating someone?”

    “Huh? No!”

“No? You’re saying such sweet things, and you’re still pretending to be innocent.” It turned out Sister Yameng wasn’t stupid. “Are you secretly dating someone?”

Lu Li also felt that he was being a little too eager. He was just too happy to see the cheerful and straightforward Sister Yameng from the past. He quickly sat up straight, his head down like a child waiting to be scolded. Seeing him like this, Zou Yameng couldn’t bring herself to question him any further. She felt that her brother wouldn’t lie to her.

Zou Yameng stressed again, “No puppy love…” For some reason, she changed her tune, “No dating. Even if you want to date, you have to let me check her out first, okay?”

    “Okay.”

Zou Yameng’s expression softened even more. She hugged Lu Li back, her ample bosom pressing against his chest without reservation. “Okay, I love the gift, Sister is very happy. Thank you, Lu Li, thank you very much, you’re so generous, may you be blessed with good health~” Her words made Lu Li laugh. He rested his head on his sister’s shoulder, smelling the scent of her body, feeling inexplicably peaceful.

His sister’s hair tickled his face, making him itch, and he moved uncomfortably. Zou Yameng’s face suddenly turned red, “Don’t rub… What are you doing, you little pervert.”

    Huh? What am I doing?

This time, Lu Li was truly innocent, not his usual act. He lowered his head slightly and realized that his sister was wearing a camisole without a bra. Two small points were clearly visible on the gray fabric, more prominent than usual. He wasn’t a virgin anymore, and he immediately understood.

Although Zou Yameng called him a pervert, she didn’t let go of her arms. Her face was flushed, and her eyes were a little unfocused.

“You use the new phone, Sister will just use the old one.” Still stubborn as a mule, refusing to listen. Lu Li felt that the phone he bought was for her, wasn’t it? If she wasn’t going to use it, why did he even buy it? They weren’t rich.

His sister was usually smart and calm, but at times like this, she was infuriating. Lu Li mischievously hugged her tighter, pressing their bodies closer together. The two protrusions rubbed against the fabric, actually making Zou Yameng let out a soft moan of arousal. The hug was too tight, their body heat, scent, and even the humidity all mixed together. Lu Li felt that he had gone too far and subconsciously wanted to let go.

That involuntary moan also brought Zou Yameng back to her senses. She pushed Lu Li away and said in embarrassment, “Why are you hugging me so tight? You’re hurting me.” She tried to pass off that embarrassing moan of arousal as a cry of pain. This flimsy excuse made Lu Li understand something. He nodded, pretending to be oblivious, and took the opportunity to ask, “Then Sister should use the new phone, otherwise…”

“Okay, okay, I’m going to take a shower, get out!”

“Didn’t you just shower this morning?”

    “Mind your own business!”

After kicking the boy out, Zou Yameng sat awkwardly on the bed, looking at the brand new phone on the floor, muttering to herself, “Why are you suddenly being so nice… It’s all your fault.” She took off her shorts and saw the wet mark on her panties, her cheeks flushing red. It was sticky and uncomfortable. Her fingers reached out uncontrollably, and she couldn’t help but picture her brother’s face in her mind.

The next second, she came to her senses and slapped herself.

    “What am I doing?”

  • I Don’t Want to Be Reborn With You 2

Chapter 2: Encounter at the Bookstore

Zou Yameng changed into a simple, short-sleeved, beige shirt and washed-out, straight-leg jeans. Her short hair hung refreshingly by her ears, her eyebrows thick and straight, both heroic and delicate. Her temperament was very similar to Lu Li’s. If Lu Li was like a pure white dove, then she was like a spotless snow sculpture.

The two sat on the outdoor seats of a simple breakfast shop, casually chatting while eating their dry noodles. Like a mother hen, Zou Yameng asked him if he had prepared all the textbooks he needed for school and if he had enough money, telling him he could ask her if he needed more. She chattered on and on until she saw the amused look on Lu Li’s face, and she stopped, saying in mock annoyance, “Do you think your sister is too long-winded?”

“I think I’m very happy right now.” He didn’t explain why he was happy, but pulled out two tissues for his sister and stacked them neatly on her hand. He used to prepare tissues for An Baili to wipe her mouth in the same way, as if taking care of a baby.

A blush crept up Zou Yameng’s face, “You’re finally enlightened today, you know how good your sister is to you? Hmph, you have a conscience after all. Then how are you going to repay your sister in the future?”

Repay? There was no need for repayment. Lu Li remembered that when he was a child, he got into a fight with his classmates and was asked to call his parents by a new teacher who didn’t know his situation. He was too ashamed to say that he didn’t have parents, so he could only beg Zou Yameng, who was always running around at that time, to pretend to be his parent, which turned into a big joke. Thinking of this, Lu Li smiled with contentment, only to notice Zou Yameng staring at him blankly.

He never dared to look directly at Sister Yameng before. It was the shyness of a teenager and the awkwardness of his own fantasies. Now that he could look at Sister Yameng with a calm mind, he naturally noticed more of her subtle expressions.

“Sister, what’s wrong? Is there something on my face?”

Zou Yameng quickly lowered her head to eat her noodles, “No.” As if changing the subject, she said, “Are you going to buy textbooks today? I’ll go with you. I don’t have training today.”

Lu Li quickly said, “Then don’t pay today. I’ve saved some money, it’s enough to buy books.” Every time he went out with Sister Yameng, she would always rush to pay, but she wasn’t rich either. Her money was all the bonus from the team, saved up bit by bit. She always said that she had nothing to spend money on, she didn’t wear makeup, and she had to control her diet, so she might as well give the money to Lu Li to spend.

“You’re the one with the brains, studying hard to get ahead.” Zou Yameng mumbled, her head down, focusing on her noodles. “You’ll definitely make something of yourself in the future. Let your sister have some sense of participation by helping you buy books, let me experience the feeling of studying too.”

“Sister, you’ll definitely make something of yourself too. Maybe you’ll even make it to the national team.” Lu Li wouldn’t tell her that his own grades were actually quite average.

“I’ll be lucky to make it to the provincial team!” She laughed. “For athletes like us, once our prime is over and our physical fitness declines, we’ll naturally be eliminated. I’ll be in trouble then, becoming an unemployed bum. I’m investing in you now so that you can support me when you’re successful and don’t let me starve to death under a bridge.”

She deliberately exaggerated, making Lu Li laugh.

Seeing his smile, Zou Yameng’s mind wandered again.

    “Sister?”

Zou Yameng put down her chopsticks in a fluster, “I’m full, let’s go.”

“Is there something on my face?”

“No, it’s just that you rarely smile. I was just surprised to see you so relaxed today.” She turned her head away, pretending to look at a young couple flirting.

Lu Li wiped his mouth and walked side by side with Zou Yameng towards the bus stop.

“I can support Sister for the rest of your life.” He said softly. These words suddenly popped out, surprising even himself, and making Zou Yameng’s heart skip a beat.

“What nonsense are you talking about? You really think your sister will starve to death!” She punched him, neither light nor heavy, making Lu Li wince. “Supporting me for the rest of my life, aren’t you ashamed? Save those words for your girlfriend. Oh, right, you’re in a new class this year, right? The liberal arts class, right? I heard there are a lot of girls, any girls you like?”

When she said the last sentence, Zou Yameng looked straight ahead, as if asking casually.

    Girls he liked?

After changing classes this year, he did end up in the liberal arts class. It was also in this new class that he met An Baili. Of course, the current An Baili was probably still a slob, wouldn’t dress up, wasn’t very popular, and was even ostracized by her classmates. She was a beautiful girl, but she preferred to wear black-rimmed glasses, tie her hair in ugly pigtails, and her thick bangs almost covered her eyes – what was she thinking?

Noticing Lu Li’s thoughtful expression, as if he was really thinking about someone, Zou Yameng felt a pang of tightness in her heart for no reason. “Is there a girl you like? Who is it? Do I know her?” Her tone was no longer gentle, but with a hint of sharpness and intensity.

She suddenly dreaded his answer. What if he really did have someone he liked? Would she watch her beloved little brother shyly nod? Or would she encourage him to pursue this girl? She couldn’t do either. Instead, she felt a tightness in her chest, as if something that belonged to her had been stolen.

She suddenly realized, what was wrong with her? Shouldn’t she be happy if her brother found someone he liked? Why was she angry? Wasn’t she working so hard so that both Lu Li and she could live a good life…?

Just as Zou Yameng was reflecting on herself, Lu Li snapped out of his memories, “Of course not. I’m in my second year of high school, I’ll be taking the college entrance exam next year, my studies are very demanding, how can I have time for dating?”

Zou Yameng didn’t want to continue this topic either, “Yes, yes, studies are important, studies are important. Didn’t you say you were going to make an indie game recently? How’s that going?”

If Zou Yameng hadn’t mentioned it, he would have forgotten. He was indeed planning to make an indie game during this time. He often went to the school’s computer room, asking the young but balding computer teacher questions about programming, and the idea of game development sprouted in his mind. But when he actually started working on it, he discovered several major problems: lack of manpower.

To make the game he envisioned, he needed artists, musicians… He couldn’t afford to hire anyone or buy copyrights, and he didn’t even have a distribution channel. But settling for something less wouldn’t sit well with him either. If he was going to do it, he was going to do it the best he could at the time.

As for art, he did have some talent in figure drawing. But game art wasn’t just about character design, there was also UI design, concept art, and so on. He couldn’t do it all by himself. As for music, Lu Li was even more clueless. Liking to listen to music didn’t mean he had the ability to write it.

Right, An Baili was very good at music… In his previous life, she was the one who made the first game with him. No, stop, Lu Li, stop thinking about An Baili. He would never have anything to do with her in this life. He would let her live her own life and not disturb her.

Wen Hupo was very talented in art. She even held an art exhibition in her previous life. But by then, their relationship had soured, and they hadn’t been in contact for many years. Occasionally, she would send him a blank letter to mock him.

Of course, the current Lu Li didn’t know Wen Hupo yet. He didn’t even know if Wen Hupo was in the United States or Shenzhou right now.

“The progress is very slow. It’s really hard to do it all alone.”

    “Can I help?”

Zou Yameng’s usual training was hard enough. Lu Li had seen the women’s table tennis team training when he went to deliver clothes. Although it was just playing table tennis, they didn’t slack off on their physical training. He even used the thin-lipped female coach as the inspiration for a villain in his game.

“No need. I can take my time with this.” He reassured her.

The two arrived at the bookstore. The sun was a bit harsh. Lu Li hadn’t seen the sun for a long time, and his skin was almost dazzlingly white under the sun, making Zou Yameng envious, “Why are you even fairer than a girl? You’re like a piece of monk meat.” Lu Li touched his arm. His skin was still fair and tender now. After working for many years and staying up late drinking, he naturally lost this youthful quality.

In fact, Zou Yameng’s skin wasn’t dark. It was a healthy, fair color, different from Lu Li’s almost bloodless paleness.

The two entered the bookstore together, only to see it crowded with students who had come to buy textbooks. The staff brought out boxes of new books from the warehouse, but the supply still couldn’t keep up with the demand. Lu Li was a slow-paced person. He wasn’t in a hurry to grab books, but Zou Yameng anxiously pulled him along, “We want one! Over here, over here!”

Lu Li was squeezed into Zou Yameng’s arms by the crowd, their bodies brushing against each other, and he felt a flicker of inappropriate desire. He thought that with his experience, he wouldn’t be easily swayed by a woman’s beauty, but the hormones in this body were a bit too much. His face flushed, and he couldn’t help but bend down slightly. How embarrassing. He wasn’t a little boy anymore, how could he get turned on so easily?

Thanks to Zou Yameng, Lu Li got most of the popular books, except for the last English reading material. The staff said that this book was relatively unpopular, and the store didn’t stock much of it, but there might be a few copies left on the back shelves. He and Zou Yameng finally managed to escape the noisy crowd and came to a secluded corner of the bookstore.

He immediately saw a blue-covered English book in the corner. English had always been his weakness. Shenzhou was the world’s leading superpower, so naturally, there was a sense of national pride, and the acceptance of foreign languages was generally low. He wanted to learn English, not for his studies, but for his dream.

That was probably the only copy of the English book left in the entire bookstore. The author was Handing Jin, an unpopular writer who specialized in writing horror stories.

He reached out for the book, but saw a fair and delicate hand reach out and grab the horror novel first. Lu Li blinked a few times and looked at the owner of the hand.

    It was the class monitor.

Calling her “class monitor” seemed a bit impolite, but Lu Li couldn’t recall her name for the moment. The girl was wearing a baseball cap to shield herself from the sun, her hair in a ponytail. She was tall, with delicate features that always reminded Lu Li of the classical beauties printed on banknotes. She had always been his class monitor, before and after the class change. It was just that Lu Li was a free-spirited student, and his impression of the class monitor remained at “the one who tattles.”

Lu Li was a person who didn’t like to be restrained, so he never got along with her.

    “Class monitor.”

“Lu Li?” To his surprise, the class monitor actually remembered his name. “Do you want this book too?” Her beautiful eyebrows furrowed, as if she had encountered some problem.

Zou Yameng rarely frowned, her brows only shooting up in displeasure, “We saw that book first!”

Lu Li originally wanted to stop Zou Yameng, but then he felt that contradicting his sister in front of others would hurt her pride, so he smiled apologetically at the class monitor, “Yes, I do want it.” He came here for this book, to copy the classic lines from it for use in his game’s storyline – a horror game.

He wanted this book, so naturally, he wouldn’t be polite. This class monitor was neither family nor friend, there was no need to give in.

The class monitor, whom he had a bad impression of, actually nodded seriously and handed the book to Lu Li, “Then you take it. I can use an e-book. You don’t have a tablet or a phone, a physical book is more important to you.” These words were a bit hurtful to his pride, but the serious way she said them made Lu Li want to laugh.

He had heard that this class monitor was a bit rigid, stubborn, and clueless.

He suddenly remembered the fate of the class monitor in his previous life: she died in a plane crash during a family trip after graduating high school. No wonder his memory of her was so vague.

Taking the horror novel, Lu Li thanked her. They didn’t speak further and parted ways. He and this class monitor were from two different worlds and never had any interaction.

Zou Yameng waited until the class monitor was far away before saying in dissatisfaction, “Who is she, your classmate? She’s so rude, what does she mean you don’t have a phone or a tablet? Hmph, judging people by their wealth!”

“Haha, she’s not judging you by your wealth, she’s just straightforward, a bit clueless.”

    “You know her well?”

    “We barely talk.”

Sister Yameng suddenly took his hand and walked out.

    “What are you doing?”

“Come on, I’m going to buy you a phone and a tablet. We can afford it if we tighten our belts a little! I can’t let other women look down on my brother.” Zou Yameng was so angry that her teeth were itching. She hated it the most when people bullied Lu Li.

Lu Li was both touched and amused, “Sister, I don’t need those things. A woman who looks down on me because of material possessions, is it necessary for me to make her look at me differently? At least I have you, Sister, you don’t dislike me, isn’t that enough?”

Zou Yameng’s face flushed, “Why are you being so cheesy today? What’s the use of me not disliking you? You’re going to find a wife eventually, you can’t let other women look down on you, and I can’t…” Her voice trailed off, her words jumbled and inaudible.

There were some thoughts that Zou Yameng didn’t dare to touch.

Lu Li held his sister’s hand and stood still, smiling freely.

“What are you laughing at…” she said weakly.

“I feel really happy, like I’m the luckiest guy alive.” Being able to see Sister Yameng again, to hear her worry about him, was simply the happiest thing in the world. His biggest regret was not saving Zou Yameng in time in his previous life.

Zou Yameng suddenly felt weak, “You… Don’t talk nonsense…” Lu Li’s eyes, overflowing with happiness and affection, made her afraid to look directly at him. Even though she knew that Lu Li only saw her as family, and that affection was only familial, her heart couldn’t help but pound.

Lu Li really… Didn’t he know that these words could easily be misunderstood by a woman? Her mind was in turmoil. How could he say such things?

On the way back, Zou Yameng was lost in her thoughts, not saying a word.

  • I Don’t Want to Be Reborn With You 1

Chapter 1: It’s Great to Be Young

    Tick-tock, tick-tock.

Lu Li loved the sound of the alarm clock. Like the sound of rain, it brought him tranquility, his mind drifting into a forest dappled with light and shadow. Time flowed as usual, from 7:15 to 7:16 in the morning, the Earth continued to rotate, everything was normal.

The date on the calendar was August 26, 2017. This was the only thing that wasn’t normal. No, perhaps the truly abnormal thing was Lu Li himself.

Gone from the face in the mirror were the weariness and the stubble of a beard. His eyes were no longer deep and heavy. He wore a crisp white shirt, his eyes were bright, and there was a youthful softness around his mouth. After a long while, he finally laughed.

He and An Baili were married on October 22, 2022. But their marriage finally came to an end after twenty years.

Lu Li placed the divorce agreement lightly in front of An Baili, his tone indifferent: “I’m tired.”

An Baili’s eyes widened. She was as beautiful as she had been twenty years ago, her features even more striking with time. But her temper, just like twenty years ago, hadn’t changed a bit. “Is it because I can’t give you children?” she asked incredulously.

Was it? Perhaps that was part of the reason. Lu Li added another excuse to the list in his mind. An Baili had once been so important to him, his white moonlight and his red rose. He had been hopelessly lost in her web of tenderness. But when love receded, all that remained besides a pile of feathers was speechless awkwardness.

He didn’t want to come home from a long day at work only to have to coax her like a child. He didn’t want to unconditionally accommodate her as he did when he was younger. He didn’t want to be irritated by her unreasonable tantrums anymore. He didn’t want to come home exhausted and still have to cook every meal himself. He didn’t want to be so broke that he didn’t even have change for parking. He didn’t want… There were too many things he didn’t want; in short, he was just tired.

He also wished to be the one loved and cared for, not the one who was always giving. An Baili would always be a girl at heart, but he, Lu Li, was no longer a young man.

Lu Li didn’t answer An Baili. He lowered his eyelids, as if dozing off.

“I don’t agree!” An Baili said, agitated, then her voice turned aggrieved, “Don’t leave me, okay…?”

Here we go again… Lu Li didn’t look up. He knew he couldn’t resist An Baili’s tears. As long as she cried, he would be at a loss. It was stupid, pathetic even.

An Baili leaned closer, her warm body pressing against his. She hugged her husband pitifully, “I don’t want a divorce.”

    Still no answer.

“You’ve been bullying me for so many years, and now you just want to throw me away like a rag?” She rubbed her cheek against Lu Li’s like a kitten, a habit she had developed in her youth. She was infatuated with his scent, his voice, everything about him. To her, Lu Li was the most special and important person, bar none.

“Are you going to find Wen Hupo? Or Chen Jianing?” Her tone became even more pitiful, “Don’t be good to them, okay? Don’t be angry anymore, I won’t force you to make fried ‘Tai Chi balls’ anymore, I’ll eat whatever you cook… Li, don’t be silent, I’m so scared.”

Always the same. Lu Li smiled sadly. He didn’t even know why he was disappointed anymore. An Baili would never understand him, never empathize with him. Was it really just because of the dish he cooked yesterday? Twenty years ago, he thought An Baili would become gentle, considerate, and mature. Ten years ago, he thought she just needed a little more time. And now, Lu Li had no hope left.

A phrase surfaced in his mind: Never expect to change a person, you are not God.

They loved each other deeply, but love wasn’t everything. Now, Lu Li decided to walk away.

“I’ve thought about it for a long time.” Lu Li finally spoke again. As soon as he opened his mouth, An Baili leaned in to kiss him, trying to silence his hurtful words with her body, as she always did. She was a beautiful woman, and she knew Lu Li couldn’t resist her allure.

But this time, Lu Li avoided her, taking her aback. A greater panic instantly washed over her. She hugged Lu Li even tighter.

“I’m really tired, very, very tired. I don’t want to say another word…” Lu Li’s words sent chills down her spine, “I’ll leave with nothing. All my wealth, including the company under my name, will be transferred to you.”

“I don’t want your money. Don’t!” An Baili panicked, her voice shrill, “Don’t say that, please, don’t say that…” The harder she cried, the further Lu Li turned his head away.

“Why are you doing this… Why are you so cruel?” An Baili sobbed, “If I wanted your money, why would I have been with you in the first place? I still remember when we were both broke and could only afford to buy a few extra steamed buns for breakfast at the school cafeteria and nibble on them at noon. We used to laugh about it…”

“Stop it.” As people get older, they naturally don’t want to hear about the past, especially at a time like this. Lu Li interrupted An Baili, “I’m the one who wasn’t tolerant enough, it’s not your fault. I’m sorry. That’s enough, there’s nothing more to say.”

The middle-aged man’s decision was made after careful consideration, no longer as fickle as he was in his youth. He decided to let An Baili calm down.

“I’m going to sleep in the guest room, you calm down first. Sign it when you’ve thought it through.” He ruthlessly pried An Baili’s hands off him, but she clung to him relentlessly, “Let go of me, I want to rest, I’m very tired today.”

    “No!”

He looked at An Baili silently, the receding love in his eyes terrified her. The Lu Li before her now was so unfamiliar that she was afraid. She subconsciously loosened her grip, but immediately regretted it. Lu Li decisively entered the guest room and locked the door, leaving An Baili crying and shouting outside.

Their concerned neighbor called, advising them not to quarrel, specifically hinting that Lu Li shouldn’t resort to domestic violence, or she would call the Women’s Federation. Lu Li explained a few words, not even sure what he had said. He lay down on the bed, groggy, his mind replaying scenes from past years. Listening to the ticking of the clock, he finally drifted off to sleep.

He had a dream. He dreamt of his sweet love affair with An Baili in his youth. He didn’t know if it was a good dream or a nightmare.

He was awakened by a pungent smell. Not only was the smell strange, but the air was also thin, lacking oxygen. He felt a little difficulty breathing. Was it because the doors and windows were closed, and the air wasn’t circulating? A bad thought suddenly flashed through his mind. He opened the bedroom door and saw An Baili sitting in the living room, tears streaming down her face, holding the crumpled divorce agreement in her hand.

The doors, the windows, even the curtains were tightly shut. The entire apartment was dark, except for An Baili’s watery eyes, which were particularly prominent.

A strange smell, like rotten eggs, permeated the air. Lu Li looked at An Baili, “What did you do?”

“I want to be with you forever and ever and ever.” She used “forever” three times, “I love you, Lu Li. You promised me you would never leave me, you wouldn’t break your promise, right?”

Lu Li finally understood what she had done. The guilt in his eyes was replaced by fear and anger, “Are you crazy? An Baili, do you even have a brain?! How old are you to be doing this?!” He wanted to open the windows, to stop An Baili.

The lack of oxygen and fatigue made his brain numb, his reactions not as sharp as usual. He didn’t even notice the lighter in An Baili’s hand at first. An Baili’s loving gaze fell on Lu Li, “I want to make you love me again.”

There were no rotten eggs, only the smell of leaking gas. And the lighter in An Baili’s hand.

The next second, flames engulfed the couple.

It was August 26, 2017, a few days before the start of his second year of high school. He had just turned sixteen, at the peak of his youth and vigor. This year, he didn’t have to worry about taking care of his health, he could stay up all night online and still go to school the next day, he could enjoy the air conditioning on rainy days, and he could drink cold drinks without a care in the world.

He laughed freely and heartily. He was actually reborn, back to the age of sixteen. On August 26th, he hadn’t even met An Baili yet. In other words, nothing had happened yet. He had the chance to choose his life all over again.

And those regrets. This time, he wouldn’t let them become regrets again.

An Baili’s final act of madness had shaken Lu Li to his core. He had no idea that the always timid An Baili harbored such a demon within her. It also made him incredibly grateful that he had made the right decision.

In his phone’s memo, he had written “buy textbooks,” followed by “XXX Chinese study guide, XXX math workbook.” Today, he needed to prepare for the start of school.

Lu Li lived alone. He had no parents, no relatives. Although he lived alone, it wasn’t in a villa, but in low-income housing provided by the government for vulnerable groups like him.

This was the country of Shenzhou on planet Earth, a constitutional monarchy. It was also Lu Li’s homeland. It was 2017, the most civilized era in history, and also the era with the most developed entertainment industry.

Lu Li had a dream: he wanted to be a game producer. He loved games, and not just video games. He loved to create rules different from reality, to weave captivating gameplay, and to see the relaxed and happy smiles on people’s faces. In his previous life, he had been chasing this dream, reaching a certain height, but far from success.

He looked around the street, trying to confirm the reality of it all with his sight and smell.

He was standing at the door of his apartment when he ran into Zou Yameng, who was returning from her morning jog.

Zou Yameng was wearing a sports bra, her delicate skin glistening with sweat, her ample bosom a frequent visitor in his teenage dreams. Before he met An Baili, he had fantasized about Zou Yameng more than once. It could only be said that youthful fantasies were always wild.

This time, he didn’t look down shyly but looked at her with joy, “Sister Yameng…!”

Zou Yameng took off her earphones, “Well, well, well, so happy to see me?” Her tone was half-joking, half-affectionate.

Zou Yameng was Lu Li’s neighbor, also an orphan with no one to care for her, living on government assistance. She had shown exceptional athletic talent in elementary school and was recruited by the Chuanhai City Women’s Sports School, becoming an outstanding youth table tennis player. At the same time, Zou Yameng was also Lu Li’s childhood friend who grew up with him, or rather, like a half-sister.

Zou Yameng was a beautiful woman. She had short hair, handsome features, a stunning figure, and a generous personality. It was said that she was very popular in the girls’ school. But this “sister” was a very indecisive person, perhaps with the same innate self-abasement as Lu Li. In the second year after Lu Li and An Baili got married, Sister Yameng committed suicide by hanging.

In her previous life, she had to withdraw from the national team due to an Achilles tendon injury. She refused the offer to be a coach for the youth team and returned to Chuanhai City. No one knew what she was thinking at that time, why she returned to Chuanhai, or why she committed suicide shortly after.

It wasn’t until Lu Li went to clean up her apartment after her death that he discovered the room was filled with empty beer bottles and garbage. He had no idea why she had gone from a cheerful and outgoing athlete to a depressed suicide victim.

An elder sister is like a mother. Most of the time, it was Zou Yameng who took care of him. Although Zou Yameng was only a year older than him, she was very reliable, and Lu Li’s later behavior was somewhat influenced by her.

“Yes, I’m very happy. Very, very happy to see Sister Yameng!” he said subconsciously.

Rebirth, it seemed, wasn’t just a simple regeneration of the soul. The rejuvenation of his body seemed to have rejuvenated his mind as well. This kind of heartfelt confession, which he wouldn’t have easily expressed in his previous life, now easily slipped out of his mouth.

Being able to see Zou Yameng again, he felt it was already a blessing from heaven.

Zou Yameng smiled happily, “You’re so sweet today. Wait for me to take a shower, and I’ll take you to breakfast.”

    “Okay.”

He looked up at the blue sky, cloudless and vast. It was good to be alive, good to be young.

Chapter 49: It Couldn’t Have Been Qin Chu

    Loseweisse didn’t pursue the thief.

She didn’t even know how they had entered or escaped. How could she possibly chase them?

She couldn’t raise the alarm, couldn’t order the Holy Knights to investigate. The stolen items were too incriminating.

She slumped against the wall, her body numb, her mind reeling. She couldn’t even muster the energy to move a finger.

She was on the verge of a breakdown.

    Seven hundred million Mana…

She had spent years, using every dirty trick in the book, accumulating that wealth.

Did anyone know how much effort she had put into embezzling those funds?

And the thirty thousand Saint Quartz… She had paid a hefty price for those precious stones. Now, it was all gone.

But what worried her most were her notebooks and diary. They contained her darkest secrets, her most shameful thoughts. If they were exposed, her carefully crafted image would be shattered.

It would be a scandal of epic proportions.

And the most devastating loss… the seven divine scrolls.

As the Holy Maiden, Loseweisse, like her predecessors, was tasked with serving the divine.

It wasn’t a difficult task. It involved cleaning the statues, ensuring their pristine condition, and praying for the gods’ blessings.

Occasionally, a Holy Maiden would receive a divine revelation.

But such occurrences were rare. Many Holy Maidens lived their entire lives without experiencing a divine message.

Loseweisse, however, had been different. During her first prayer session, the seven statues had erupted in a blinding light. When the light subsided, seven scrolls lay scattered on the ground.

She had picked them up, her heart pounding with trepidation. As her fingers touched the scrolls, she had sensed a powerful, ancient energy, a mysterious consciousness guiding her, urging her to grow stronger.

The mental magic she had mastered, the intricate wards she could create… she had learned it all from those scrolls. She hadn’t experienced the mental assault, the taint of corruption, that Qin Chu had suffered.

She had understood the scrolls’ value instantly. Since there was no Holy Son this generation, she was the only one present. She had concealed the scrolls, unwilling to share their power with anyone.

They contained countless secrets, knowledge, power… If she had enough time, if she could decipher even a single scroll, she would surpass Augustus, the Pope, becoming the first female Pope in the Holy See’s history.

After Jie Luo, the First Hero, had appeared, her focus had shifted, her research neglected. Otherwise, she would be far stronger now.

And after his death, she had been consumed by her desire to resurrect him…

The value of even a single scroll far exceeded the combined worth of the seven hundred million Mana, the thirty thousand Saint Quartz, and her notebooks and diary.

And now, these priceless artifacts were gone.

She couldn’t understand how it had happened. The Holy See was protected by a powerful barrier, patrolled by countless Holy Knights. How had the thief breached their defenses?

    Could it be… Qin Chu?

Her dislike for the Second Hero made her suspect him instantly.

But she quickly dismissed the idea.

He wasn’t capable of such a feat.

He was currently training in the residence’s training grounds, learning the Star Flame Battle Qi technique from Ekaterina.

If he had entered openly, as the Hero, he would have been surrounded by priests and bishops, leaving him no time for such mischief. And if he had tried to sneak in, he wouldn’t be able to bypass the Holy Knights or the barrier with his current strength.

Most importantly, she had passed by the training grounds on her way back. He was still training. She had even questioned the guards, who confirmed that he hadn’t left the training grounds all afternoon.

He had been diligently practicing, his focus unwavering.

The guards, though disliking the Hero, were impressed by his dedication. It seemed unlikely that he was the culprit.

    If not him, then who?

The thief must be incredibly skilled, perhaps even a Master Thief.

Master Thieves were rare in the Heavenly Continent. If a Master Thief was responsible, retrieving her stolen possessions would be impossible.

    Wait…

Loseweisse, her mind regaining its clarity, assessed the situation. All five storage rings were gone. The Stunning Love potion in her desk drawer was missing. She didn’t know if Maggie and Sana had succeeded, but even if they had, it was useless now.

She couldn’t gather the necessary ingredients to create more Stunning Love within a week.

    She continued her analysis.

This might not be the work of a Master Thief.

She hadn’t offended any Master Thieves. They wouldn’t risk antagonizing the Holy See by stealing from her, especially since she had a reputation for integrity.

And her wards were exceptionally crafted.

Even Athena, the Grand Magus of the Hero Squad, could only sense them, not disable them.

A thief wouldn’t possess such advanced magical skills.

Only a more powerful mage could have breached her wards.

And had the thief truly entered undetected?

Could it be someone who had legitimate access to the Holy See?

That would explain how they had bypassed the barrier and the Holy Knights. They were an insider, recognized by the barrier.

The Holy Knights wouldn’t have questioned them.

The priests and clergymen wouldn’t have suspected a thing.

And they possessed superior magical skills, enabling them to disable her wards…

Within the Holy See, only one person fit that description:

    Augustus, the Pope!

Could he be responsible for this?

  • Mistaken Era 75

    Chapter 75

The Demon Lord Wei Jie’s past actions were simply to try and change his own fate, to defy Heaven and ultimately transcend his demonic nature.

In Tang Youshu’s view, having witnessed his master’s tragic death, what were trivial romantic entanglements compared to changing that previous calamity?

Hearing this, Cui Xiaoxiao looked disbelievingly between Wei Jie and her former master Tang Youshu.

At this moment, Cui Xiaoxiao seemed to realize: Tang Youshu must have coldly observed for a long time, feeling that her dalliance with the legendary Demon Lord was simply unseemly.

He might as well take this opportunity to tear apart this ill-fated relationship that should never have occurred…

Wei Jie could no longer listen – all those male bastards deserved to be chopped like kindling and burned alive.

And the first one who should be burned was this treacherous disciple Tang Youshu.

This disciple had acted so sneakily, and now he was trying to blame everything on Wei Jie!

Wei Jie gripped Tang Youshu’s throat again, coldly saying, “Just what nonsense are you spouting? What do you mean I arranged this? What did I arrange? Xiaoxiao, don’t listen to his tricks trying to drive a wedge between us. This little brat’s insinuations are truly clumsy beyond belief!”

This time, he truly held nothing back with his grip!

Tang Youshu must be harboring malicious intentions, surely sent by that Prince Can!

Tang Youshu seemed to sense Wei Jie’s killing intent. At this moment of life and death, he suddenly waved his hand as if plucking something from thin air, producing a blue gemstone.

Cui Xiaoxiao recognized this as the spirit stone stolen from the mountain cave!

As the spirit stone rose into the air, both Cui Xiaoxiao and Wei Jie had a foreboding feeling.

Wei Jie didn’t even care about Tang Youshu, immediately rushing over to embrace Cui Xiaoxiao to protect her from the spirit stone.

The flame pattern on the spirit stone glowed an alluring light, bathing the entire room in a hazy blue radiance.

In the next instant, as if recognizing its master, it flashed and shot straight towards Wei Jie’s forehead.

Although Wei Jie raised a qi shield to block it, his efforts were in vain as the blue gemstone pierced through and struck his forehead.

The next moment, the gemstone vanished, but the same flame pattern that had been carved on it now appeared on Wei Jie’s previously smooth forehead – in the cave, Cui Xiaoxiao had seen the ancient Flame Emperor with an identical mark.

After being possessed by the spirit stone, Wei Jie’s body suddenly collapsed backwards. Cui Xiaoxiao quickly supported him and laid him down on a mat, calling out to him a few times, but he remained unconscious.

Cui Xiaoxiao’s heart burned with anxiety. She finally drew her sword and pointed it at her former master’s neck, “Master! What did you do to him?”

Tang Youshu nursed his bruised throat from Wei Jie’s grip and eyed the Heaven-Smiting Sword pointed at him. After a ragged cough, he said, “Nothing, the artifact has simply returned to its original master. This spirit stone contains the remnants of the ancient deity Flame Emperor’s divine power. Although only half remains, it is still formidable. In this life, you took Wei Jie’s place in undergoing his tribulations, but his current cultivation would be difficult to withstand the coming trials. All my efforts were merely to increase Master’s chances… Xiaoxiao, you’ve been to the back mountain cave and know the legends of the Flame Emperor. Yet the Demon Lord Wei Jie is that reincarnated deity who was supposed to undergo those tribulations and regain his divinity. You two were never destined to meet and know… let alone love each other!”

Cui Xiaoxiao did not withdraw her Heaven-Smiting Sword, only asking sternly, “If he is truly a deity, then why was he slain by Qin Lingxiao in the original timeline and unable to regain his divine position?”

Tang Youshu’s expression turned resentful as he recalled the past, “Because someone didn’t want him to return to divinity and laid a trap, arranging for his divine position to be usurped, completely altering Master’s destiny!”

Cui Xiaoxiao realized that in the previous life, it must have been the cunning Prince Can who ultimately became an immortal after usurping Wei Jie’s divinity.

But for such a heaven-defying act, without someone’s covert support, how could the Prince Can have altered the fates of Heaven itself with just his own abilities? Just who was secretly supporting the Prince Can and guiding him down this path?

At this moment, Tang Youshu continued, “Originally, when the Flame Emperor fell into the mortal realm for his reincarnation, he had to undergo seven major tribulations to regain his divinity and return to rule over the spirits of the underworld. But when Master experienced the sixth tribulation and was about to regain his divine status, he was ambushed by Qin Lingxiao. I only later inadvertently discovered this conspiracy – his divine position had also been usurped by that despicable Prince Can. In this new life, if I cannot assist Master in quickly regaining immortality, what meaning would there be?”

Cui Xiaoxiao looked into Tang Youshu’s eyes and, she didn’t know why, but chose to believe his words.

She slowly withdrew her sword, then crouched down and placed her fingers under Wei Jie’s nose. His breathing was steady, but the intervals were growing longer, a sign of his increasing cultivation.

It seemed Tang Youshu hadn’t lied – this spirit stone did greatly benefit one’s cultivation.

For some reason, Tang Youshu kept looking at Cui Xiaoxiao with pity, saying softly, “This spirit stone contains the Flame Emperor’s divine power. Back then, it was only when breaking through the sixth tribulation that Master found the method to unlock the formation in the back mountain and discovered this spirit stone. But he found it too late. Although he managed to purge the demonic nature from his body in time, it gave that bastard Qin Lingxiao an opportunity… Now that I’ve helped Master obtain the spirit stone early, even if I bear deep sins and end up in hell, I’ll have no regrets!”

Perhaps it was Tang Youshu’s ever calm demeanor and convincing reasons, but Cui Xiaoxiao felt any further accusations would be pointless.

She lowered her eyes to the still unconscious Wei Jie and said softly, “What will happen to him now that you’ve given him this spirit stone?”

Tang Youshu averted his eyes with some shame and remained silent for a moment before saying, “To become a deity, one must extinguish all desires and emotions. If he is possessed by this divine power, he will inevitably take on the original deity’s nature. The Flame Emperor governed the deities of the underworld. Although Master will still retain memories of you, he will likely gain great enlightenment and be unable to indulge in human loves and desires… Before Master ascends to immortality, I cannot send you back to two hundred years later, or else it will greatly disrupt your karmic destiny. So… do you want to leave Lingshan for now and go somewhere else to cultivate in seclusion?”

Cui Xiaoxiao couldn’t help but let out a wry laugh, “If he still remembers me, how could we possibly cut ties so abruptly? The matters between him and me, do they need your decision?”

Tang Youshu watched as Cui Xiaoxiao smiled, but her face suddenly turned pale, clearly believing his words.

A flicker of pity flashed in his eyes, but in the end he still steeled his heart and said, “Originally, I didn’t want to force an early separation between you two either, but a brief pain is better than a long-lasting one… You were never meant to walk the same path. For the rest of your lives, you won’t be together!”

Cui Xiaoxiao’s hands trembled with anger, but she still couldn’t bear to be rude to her former master.

She finally sheathed her sword and lifted Wei Jie up, intending to take him away from Tang Youshu.

She was well aware of the vast obstacles between herself and Wei Jie. But whether their relationship worked out was a decision for the two of them alone. Lord Tang had no business interfering!

Tang Youshu clearly guessed Cui Xiaoxiao would blame him and let out a faint sigh.

Over these past few days, every interaction between Master Wei Jie and this young lady had been witnessed by him. The tenderness Master displayed was something Tang Youshu had never seen before, leaving him startled yet filled with regret.

If possible, he didn’t want to play the role of separating these lovebirds either.

But after his master’s death, he had secretly infiltrated the Prince Can Manor of the Regent King in the capital and saw those fragmentary pages, clearly understanding that the Flame Emperor’s destiny, whether as a deity or human, did not include any worldly romantic connections.

So this relationship between Master and Cui Xiaoxiao, who was born into the wrong era, was destined to be nothing more than an ill-fated dalliance!

If that was the case, it was better to cut it off cleanly while their bond was still shallow.

Unfortunately, Cui Xiaoxiao was still unaware of the spirit stone’s power and stubbornly insisted on supporting Wei Jie.

At this moment, the man lying on the mat suddenly opened his eyes and slowly sat up.

Cui Xiaoxiao carefully studied his face. Apart from the added flame mark on his forehead, Wei Jie’s appearance was unchanged, yet he seemed like a completely different person.

The current Wei Jie had a profound gaze and chilly countenance, devoid of his former lazy nonchalance. Instead, he resembled that cold and stern Demon Lord who rarely smiled from her dreams.

Now, his eyes held endless iciness when looking at Cui Xiaoxiao, lacking any of their former warmth.

When Cui Xiaoxiao reached out to support him, he coldly waved his sleeve, forcefully brushing her aside.

The spirit stone’s power was not to be underestimated – his inner energy had surged tremendously in that instant!

Caught off guard by this forceful shove, Cui Xiaoxiao lost her balance and her head struck the corner of a nearby table, causing her to tear up from the pain.

Though the Talisman Sect was small, everyone used to dote on Cui Xiaoxiao like a precious treasure.

Seeing Cui Xiaoxiao accidentally injure herself so badly, even Tang Youshu was slightly moved and went to support his beloved disciple.

The newly awakened Wei Jie reacted faster than his mind, reaching out his arm as if to embrace the tearful girl. But as his long arm extended, the flame mark on his forehead flickered with light.

Indulging emotions and desires was a great taboo in immortal cultivation. Especially for one who formerly governed the spirits of the underworld, his heart could not contain a shred of worldly attachment.

When Wei Jie merged with the spirit stone containing the Flame Emperor’s power, it was as if he had a profound enlightenment, completely understanding the path to immortality.

He would instinctively avoid emotional entanglements, his reaction naturally suppressing any lingering human sentiments, as if his heart had been sealed off from joy and sorrow.

So while Wei Jie retained memories of his past with Cui Xiaoxiao, they seemed shrouded by a heavy veil, visible yet lacking any sense of true tenderness, like a bystander observing someone else’s affairs.

The intimate affections he had once craved day and night now seemed utterly trivial in an instant…

Now, seeing Cui Xiaoxiao’s tears, Wei Jie even felt a strange irritation. He closed his eyes like a monk in meditation, no longer looking at Cui Xiaoxiao.

Cui Xiaoxiao pushed away the supporting Tang Youshu and slowly sat up, nursing her head. Since meeting Wei Jie, she had never seen such a cold and ruthless side of him.

She slowly turned to Tang Youshu and said word-by-word, “Why does it seem like he doesn’t recognize me anymore? Did you erase his memories?”

Tang Youshu let out a silent sigh and said calmly, “He simply won’t indulge in human desires anymore. Didn’t you expect there would eventually be a day when you would part ways? This day has merely come sooner… you should have been prepared.”

At this moment, the man who had awakened with a cold expression finally spoke in a chilly voice, “Cui Xiaoxiao, you go out first. I still have matters to discuss with Tang Youshu.”

This uttering of her full name sounded unnatural, for since they had known each other, Wei Jie rarely addressed Cui Xiaoxiao so formally.

When pleased, he would affectionately call her Xiaoxiao. When displeased and moody, he might disrespectfully say “Master”.

But this polite and distant use of her full name seemed to be the first time coming from his lips.

Cui Xiaoxiao suspected Tang Youshu was controlling him, so she tentatively asked, “Wei Jie, do you truly know who I am and what’s happening now?”

Wei Jie said coldly, “You’re just my nominal master who has taken the Patriarch’s title without teaching me anything, right? What does it matter if I don’t remember someone like you?”

At another time, faced with such a vicious and merciless taunt, Cui Xiaoxiao might have guiltily applauded her disciple.

But now, Cui Xiaoxiao felt she was only hearing Wei Jie’s true feelings – after having his emotional desires sealed, she was truly worthless in his eyes…

Perhaps not wanting to see the pitiful sight of the tearful young lady, Wei Jie waved his hand again, forcefully pushing Cui Xiaoxiao out of the study and slamming the door shut.

With only Wei Jie and Tang Youshu remaining inside, Tang Youshu’s face was suddenly struck by a vicious slap, splitting his lip and causing blood to spill from his mouth.

Wei Jie was aware that Tang Youshu’s earlier actions seemed to assist in increasing his cultivation without malice. After disciplining Tang Youshu with that slap while showing a slight trace of restraint, he said coldly as if suppressing his earlier irritation at seeing Cui Xiaoxiao’s tears, “Explain to me exactly what is going on, or don’t blame me for being unable to tolerate you!”

The Flame Emperor governed the deities that suppressed demons and carried an aura of killing intent to subdue evil spirits. His nature was solitary and callous.

In Wei Jie’s original destiny, after undergoing numerous tribulations, he was supposed to have transformed into this ruthless existence.

Unfortunately, in this lifetime he had been cavorting with Cui Xiaoxiao, indulging in food, drinks and romantic dalliances, his nature drifting ever further from divinity.

So although he struck his master with that vicious slap, tears of gratitude welled up in Tang Youshu’s eyes. At this moment, he truly felt he had returned to his youthful days studying under his master’s strict guidance and scolding.

However, explaining everything from the beginning would be far too lengthy.

Thinking of this, he took out a thick, tattered old book from his robes and handed it to Wei Jie.

Wei Jie narrowed his eyes at the familiar cover – wasn’t this the book Cui Xiaoxiao frequently read in secret, never allowing others to touch?

It turned out the parcel Cui Xiaoxiao had lost was actually picked up by Tang Youshu.

Originally, Tang Youshu had left behind this secret book to guide Wei Jie in avoiding the pitfalls of his predetermined fate. But Cui Xiaoxiao ended up utilizing it thoroughly, taking Wei Jie’s place on that fated path.

Now with this book recording Wei Jie’s original life, Tang Youshu could finally reveal the truth that he and Cui Xiaoxiao had traveled back from two hundred years in the future.

Only by informing Master of his original destiny could Tang Youshu prepare him to face the unknown coming tribulations and overcome the hidden enemies lurking in the dark.

He didn’t speak of it before because with Wei Jie’s lingering emotional attachments, the truth would have only created unnecessary obstacles.

But now that Wei Jie had regained his divine nature as the Flame Emperor and seemed to have distanced himself from Cui Xiaoxiao, Tang Youshu dared to reveal this book that divulged the secrets of heaven.

Even if it risked violating the heavenly rules, he was determined to support Master Wei Jie in ascending to his divine position!

Wei Jie took the book Tang Youshu handed him, staring at it for a while before finally flipping it open to the first page…

As for Cui Xiaoxiao being pushed out of the study, Yu Ling’er was anxiously waiting outside the door.

Seeing Cui Xiaoxiao stumble out, Yu Ling’er hurried over to support her and asked urgently, “What’s going on with your Talisman Sect today? How can you randomly interrogate people like this? What mistake did Lord Tang make for Wei Jie to treat him that way… Ai ya, what happened to your head? You’re bleeding!”

It turned out when Cui Xiaoxiao bumped against the table earlier, she had scraped her scalp and it was now bleeding.

Yu Ling’er was startled and quickly pulled Cui Xiaoxiao back to her room, first applying medicine to the wound.

But when she asked again what had happened, Cui Xiaoxiao remained silent, only hugging the little fox’s neck as she sobbed bitterly.

Earlier in the study, she had been brought to the verge of wailing grief several times by that damned master-disciple duo, but had persevered.

Her beliefs shattered, the mischievous disciple she doted on revealed as the mastermind manipulating her all along! And before the devastated Cui Xiaoxiao could even confront this great deceiver, that Wei fellow suddenly turned cold as ice, acting like an aloof immortal.

In her life, the only other time Cui Xiaoxiao had cried so hopelessly was when her mother sold her as a child.

Although unaware of what made Cui Xiaoxiao cry, Yu Ling’er had always seen her as strong, easygoing, and optimistic by nature.

No matter trapped in the mirror realm of Luoyi City or facing any danger, Cui Xiaoxiao was always calm and composed, their pillar of strength. She was like a warm sun, her presence comforting everyone around her.

Oh heavens, what immense grievance had this Cui Xiaoxiao suffered to make her weep so utterly devastated in this moment?

Foxes were naturally emotional creatures. Triggered by Cui Xiaoxiao’s tears, Yu Ling’er also couldn’t help but burst into tears, hugging her tightly as she whimpered and stroked her head, “It’s okay, just let it all out. No matter who bullied you, I won’t forgive them! Even if it was Lord Tang… Lord Tang is not allowed to bully you!”

After crying for a while, when Cui Xiaoxiao lifted her head and saw the little fox’s pitiful snotty-nosed appearance, her tears somehow more wretched than the true victim’s, she couldn’t help but break into laughter again. She then held up a mirror to Yu Ling’er.

Caught off guard by her own disheveled appearance, Yu Ling’er let out a shrill fox cry before hurriedly grabbing Cui Xiaoxiao’s sleeve to wipe her nose. Cui Xiaoxiao tried to pull her sleeve back, but the little fox refused to let go.

After their shared outpouring of grief, the two ladies finally managed to somewhat compose themselves.

Cui Xiaoxiao took a deep breath. She did have the ill-fated “Ten Injuries” destiny, so she might as well calmly face the myriad sufferings of the world that she was destined for.

As for Wei Jie, some things could not simply begin or be forgotten just because he said so!

Others might treat her as a chess piece, but she could not devalue herself so cheaply. Even if their relationship ended up an illusion, she had to demand an explanation from that deceitful master-disciple pair!

That day, Wei Jie and Tang Youshu conversed in private within the study for a long time. When Cui Xiaoxiao finally calmed down and approached the study door, she happened to catch them as they were leaving.

This time, even Yu Ling’er following behind Cui Xiaoxiao sensed the complete change in the tall man’s demeanor.

The lazy, carefree smile that used to grace Wei Jie’s face had vanished completely, replaced by an icy, emotionless expression.

Seeing his cold visage, Cui Xiaoxiao couldn’t help but feel pensive: No wonder people said Qin Lingxiao had that arrogant, aloof immortal air – he was simply emulating his Master Wei Jie.

It seemed to cultivate immortality, one had to adopt such a sourpuss, walking dead demeanor…

Cui Xiaoxiao didn’t know what she was still hoping for when Wei Jie strode past without sparing her a glance. She suddenly grabbed his large hand, tightly grasping it as their fingers intertwined.

His palm was still warm, the sensation of holding his hand the same thrilling feeling as every time their fingers entwined before.

Chapter 100: A Heart-to-Heart Between Mother and Daughter

[Special Trump Card – Golden Finger: Upon activation, the Host’s finger will become the most dexterous “Golden Finger” in the world, granting divine assistance in skills such as playing musical instruments, painting, massage, and acupuncture.]

“What the…?! The name got me excited for a moment, but it’s just a life skill card?!”

He had endured such a long and challenging “fake boyfriend” scenario, barely keeping his composure through unexpected twists and turns, and all he got was a life skill card?

He couldn’t understand the system’s logic. Where’s my dragon? My magic? My Tamagotchi? Even a classic fusion card would be better than this!

    Hmph!

[Host, please do not be discouraged. Keep up the good work, and you will receive better rewards.]

Empty promises. Anyone can say that.

[The Host will receive a substantial reward upon completing this stage of the plot.]

You mean the Mystic Refining Gift Pack? Isn’t that only for Mystic Refiners? And what does it have to do with the current plot?

[Ding! Friendly System Reminder: The reward for this stage will include an additional Cultivation Gift Pack (Yellow Turban Warrior Edition).]

Yellow Turban Warrior? So… for Body Tempering?

    His eyes lit up.

Among the seven continents of the Mystic Heavenly Continent, the Yellow Turban Continent was renowned for its Body Tempering experts. Most cultivators there focused on physical strength. Upon reaching the initial stage, they possessed combat power comparable to Mystic Scholars, earning the title of “Warrior,” or “Yellow Turban Warrior” to those from other continents.

The previous Mystic Refining Gift Pack had granted him a hundred million crystal coins. This Body Tempering Gift Pack shouldn’t be any worse, right?

Wait, I’m not exactly short on money now. What good is another hundred million?

[The Host’s words are misguided. One can never have too much money. The more, the better.]

That’s true, but it’s still less exciting.

[The greatest reward for the Host is the successful completion of the plot.]

    Right.

After all, by following the script, he would eventually reach the pinnacle of this world.

He was already the strongest student at the Mystic Academy, admired by his peers and favored by his instructors. Could life get any better?

Pushing aside his complicated thoughts, he focused on his breakfast. Mi Xue’er, seated beside him, kept piling food onto his plate, showering him with attention.

Mi Shan and the other elders were pleased by their affectionate display. Only his wife remained stoic, occasionally glancing at them with a disapproving frown.

They had already requested leave for the morning, so they had plenty of free time.

After breakfast, the elders gathered around Yan Zhen, eager to learn about his achievements at the academy, or rather, to assess the worthiness of their potential son-in-law. Meanwhile, Mi Xue’er was summoned to her mother’s room.

Her mother scrutinized her, her gaze lingering on her legs. “I heard noises last night. And you washed your bedsheets this morning. Why didn’t you… succeed?”

Mi Xue’er blushed. “He… he used his hands.”

“He could control himself? He’s a true gentleman. But that also means he doesn’t like you.”

    “Mother, I know, but… but…”

“But what?” her mother interrupted, her tone exasperated. “But you like him, right?”

    “Y-yes.” She lowered her head.

    Her mother sighed.

Mi Xue’er, eager to appease her, gently guided her to a chair. “Mother, thank you for helping me. You’re the best.”

Her mother wasn’t swayed. “Hmph, weren’t you complaining about me being annoying last night?”

She clung to her mother’s arm, whining. “I just didn’t realize your good intentions at the time! But Mother, how did you know I like Little Brother Yan Zhen?”

“Do you think I wouldn’t know my own daughter?” she replied calmly, a hint of pride in her voice. “You never brought any other boys home when I forced you to go on those blind dates. Why now? It’s obvious something’s going on. And the way you look at him… you practically want to glue yourself to him. But he just sees you as a friend. There’s no spark between you. Only your father and your uncles are blind enough to be fooled.”

“Heehee, Mother, you’re so wise! Nothing gets past you.” She flattered her, then asked cautiously, “So, what should I do now?”

“You still want to pursue him after all this?”

    “Can’t I? I really like him.”

“Then why did you steal his sweet soup last night?” Her mother rolled her eyes. “The fastest way for a woman to win a man’s heart is to… well, you know… You can work on the emotional stuff later… Unless he truly dislikes you.”

“But forcing someone into a relationship won’t make them happy, Mother.”

“Thirst-quenching is the priority! Who cares about sweetness? If you want it sweet, add sugar yourself!”

“Is that… how it works?” She was skeptical.

“There are so many girls who like him at the academy! Even my best friend and her cousin have liked him since they were kids! And that Xiao family girl… she’s been giving him strange looks lately! What can I do to catch his attention, Mother? Please teach me!”

“That boy is handsome, talented, and has a good personality. It’s natural for him to be popular. If I were twenty years younger, your father wouldn’t stand a chance.”

“Mother! You can’t have designs on your own future son-in-law! Father will be furious!”

Her mother’s expression remained impassive. “If you want to stand out from the crowd, you need to make him realize your worth. Aren’t you living together? Then care for him, support him, be there for him. Make him realize that there’s a beautiful, kind, and caring Senior Sister who loves him and wants to be with him. If that doesn’t work, then be more proactive. Take the initiative at the right moment. And if even that doesn’t work… then it’s hopeless. Give up and move on.”

Mi Xue’er pondered her words. After a long silence, she spoke softly. “Mother, what if I’m willing to be his concubine? To serve him alongside my best friend? Would that increase my chances?”

“You wouldn’t dare!” Her mother glared at her, her voice sharp. “Do you think I raised you to be someone’s concubine?!” She rolled up her sleeves, reaching for her daughter’s ear.

Mi Xue’er quickly dodged. “But he’s so exceptional, Mother! He’s going to become someone important! There’s no shame in being his concubine!”

The Emperor’s concubine… countless talented women would kill for that position.

Her mother scoffed. “Unless he reaches the Mystic King realm, I won’t allow it. And neither will your father.”

    “Then there’s no problem.”

A Mystic King? She would reach that level herself in a few years, thanks to Yan Zhen’s assistance and the abundance of pills he provided.

Her mother eyed her strangely. “You have too much faith in him. Look at all the talented youths in our kingdom. How many of them have become Mystic Kings?”

“I’ve made up my mind. Even if I have to be a concubine, I’m going to marry him!” She stuck her tongue out at her mother and ran out of the room.

Her mother’s face darkened. After a long silence, she sighed.

    Chapter 99: Wetting the Bed

Mi Xue’er knew that even with her knowledge from her previous life, winning Yan Zhen’s heart wasn’t guaranteed.

    She was too ordinary.

Well, that wasn’t quite right. It was more like the women surrounding him were all exceptionally extraordinary.

Yan Meng’er was adorable, with her youthful beauty and ample bosom. She was also incredibly affectionate and skilled at acting spoiled. The ideal girlfriend.

Yan Ruyu, though serious and responsible, possessed a fiery figure. Her full, round buttocks were captivating, and her tsundere personality only added to her allure. Rumor had it that Yan Zhen had even… played with her backside. If not for her pride, she might have already won him over.

Instructor Yu Xuan, with her gentle, virtuous demeanor and unwavering kindness, surpassed most other women, not to mention her stunning beauty, graceful figure, and powerful background as a member of the Sacred Land Academy.

And then there was her. She had no outstanding qualities. If not for her naturally fair, radiant, and smooth skin, she wouldn’t even be as attractive as Xiao Xinyan.

But such a minor trait wouldn’t be enough to capture Yan Zhen’s attention. She couldn’t shamelessly offer herself to him.

If she couldn’t win him over at the Mystic Academy, she had no chance at the Sacred Land Academy.

So she hadn’t held out much hope. She simply wanted to pursue him wholeheartedly, creating beautiful memories to make up for the regrets of her previous life.

    Like right now.

She would use this opportunity, drinking the drugged sweet soup and initiating intimacy with him, without expecting anything in return.

It was her mother who had drugged the soup. It was she who would be shamelessly throwing herself at him. He would simply be helping her relieve her… discomfort. He wouldn’t feel guilty.

    A win-win situation.

As the drug’s effects spread through her body, she made her move. She kissed him.

First his cheek, then his lips.

She offered him her first kiss, a treasure she had kept for two lifetimes, surrendering to her desire.

    She had finally done it.

The fire within her, already blazing, intensified the moment their lips met, burning through her, her skin flushed, beads of sweat forming despite the cool air from the Snow Wind Pearl.

    “Senior Sister Xue’er, calm down!”

Yan Zhen cupped her face, trying to pull away, but she clung to him, kissing him again.

It was her first time, so her kiss was clumsy, but she knew that a kiss between lovers wasn’t just about lips meeting. It involved a deeper, more intimate connection.

Fueled by the drug’s effects, she boldly explored.

    “Mmm…”

His eyes widened, his own desire stirring. He almost responded to her advances.

He steadied himself, no longer resisting. He allowed her to kiss him, his hand reaching into his storage ring for his Calming Pills.

No, they’re not there! The bottle is empty!

He froze. Where are my Calming Pills? Did I use them all? No way! This is too cruel!

Sensing his lack of resistance, she felt a surge of joy. He must have feelings for her after all!

Emboldened, she wrapped her arms around his neck, pressing her body against his, savoring his warmth and the frantic beating of his heart.

He was overwhelmed, returning her kisses passively as he searched his storage ring for a Detoxification Pill.

Thank goodness! I have one left! It seems I’ll have to resort to that method again.

He retrieved the pill, then abruptly shifted his weight, pushing her onto her back, pinning her beneath him.

She moaned, not resisting, but clinging to him even tighter.

“Little Brother Yan Zhen, please… take me…” she whispered, her voice husky with desire.

Her seductive tone, her tempting words… he felt his control slipping.

I want to, Senior Sister! But I can’t!

Ignoring the script for a moment, there was a more practical issue. If he slept with her tonight, they would definitely notice something was different tomorrow. Instructor Yu Xuan would skin him alive, and Yan Ruyu wouldn’t let him off easy either.

The mere thought sent shivers down his spine.

Besides, she was only acting this way because of the aphrodisiac. Once the drug wore off, even if she knew it was her mother who had drugged her, their friendship would be irrevocably damaged.

“Calm down, Senior Sister Xue’er. I’ll treat you. You’ll feel better soon.”

She shook her head weakly, her brow furrowed. “I don’t want treatment… I want you… I want you to… please…”

“You won’t be saying that when you’re sober.”

He could tell she had feelings for him. She often touched him playfully, but they weren’t at the stage where they could… do this.

    “Take this pill first.”

He held out the pill, urging her to open her mouth, but she shook her head, refusing to cooperate.

“No… I don’t want pills… I’m so hot… I need you…” She tried to kiss him again, but he dodged.

He sighed inwardly. It seemed she was the type who refused to take medicine when sick, even more difficult to handle than Yan Meng’er.

He hesitated for a moment, then cupped her face, quickly popping the pill into his own mouth before capturing her lips in a kiss.

He had been kissing her for a while now. A few more wouldn’t make a difference.

The moment their lips met, he pushed the pill into her mouth with his tongue.

His initiative delighted her, and she swallowed the Detoxification Pill without realizing it.

He continued kissing her, keeping her distracted as he channeled his Mystic Power into her abdomen, helping her absorb the pill’s effects.

At the same time, his other hand moved to her lower back, stimulating a pressure point.

The warmth of his Fire Mystic Power elicited a soft moan from her.

She felt happy, blissful. He was finally responding to her advances!

She clung to him, her passion intensifying.

Then, he stopped channeling his Mystic Power, his finger pressing on a pressure point near her navel.

The simultaneous stimulation of both pressure points brought a sudden wave of clarity to her muddled mind. Her movements ceased, her body stiffening.

    This… this feeling…

She discreetly tried to close her legs, but he skillfully prevented her.

The familiar sensation intensified, becoming unbearable.

    What’s happening? Why am I…? No, I can’t… If this continues, I’ll…

“Little Brother Yan Zhen, stop! Let go of me!”

He closed his eyes, his voice emotionless. “I’ll let go after the drug’s effects are purged.”

“No! I don’t want this! I’ll die of shame! Let go of me! Please!”

Her eyes widened as he silenced her with his lips, just as she had done to him earlier.

The urge to relieve herself became overwhelming, the dam about to burst!

She couldn’t bear to imagine what was about to happen. She pounded on his back with her fists, but her limbs were weak, her blows barely registering.

Sensing the moment was right, he pressed down on the pressure point.

    “Ugh!”

The bedsheets and his clothes were soaked, a faint, musky scent filling the air.

He released her, sitting back to observe her. She was crying, tears streaming down her face, her nose twitching, as if he had just violated her.

Well, it wasn’t that far off.

Meeting his gaze, she quickly covered her face with her hands, her desire completely extinguished, replaced by a burning shame. She wanted to die, to disappear, to never see him again.

She hadn’t wet the bed since she was a child. And now, reborn as a nineteen-year-old, she had done it again, in front of the man she loved…

He felt incredibly awkward, wanting to escape to the Crystal Stone Space.

However, unlike Xiao Xinyan, Mi Xue’er was a dear friend. He couldn’t just abandon her after the treatment.

He tried to comfort her. “Senior Sister Xue’er, it was an emergency. There’s no shame in seeking treatment. Don’t worry about it. I… I won’t tell anyone.”

    “—You better not!”

His words only fueled her shame. “You idiot! You’re the worst! If you hate me so much, just let me die! Why humiliate me like this?! I’m never talking to you again!”

    “Senior Sister Xue’er…”

“I don’t want to hear it! Go away!”

“Ahem, I was just going to suggest… maybe you should clean up and change the sheets? Otherwise, it’ll be difficult to sleep.”

She fell silent, too embarrassed to speak.

He spoke gently. “Do you want me to carry you?”

She didn’t answer, only clenching her legs together.

He smiled faintly, scooping her into his arms and carrying her behind the screen, placing her in the empty tub.

There was still a bucket of unused clean water beside the tub.

He grabbed a towel, hanging it on the rack. “Here, Senior Sister Xue’er. Clean yourself up. I’ll change the sheets.”

She remained silent, her face still hidden in her hands.

Knowing she was too embarrassed to face him, he returned to the bed, stripping it and tossing the soiled linens aside. He opened the wardrobe, retrieved a clean bamboo mat, and spread it on the bed. Then, he replaced the blanket and pillows.

Glancing down, he noticed some dampness on his pants. He changed into a fresh set of sleeping clothes.

By the time he was done, she had emerged from behind the screen, clad only in a short, sleeveless dress, her legs bare, a hint of darkness visible beneath the thin fabric.

He quickly averted his gaze, noticing she had stopped crying. However, her lower lip was jutting out in a pout, her expression utterly dejected. She glared at him, then let out a dramatic sniff.

It seems she’s not angry anymore.

She climbed onto the bed, wrapping herself in the blanket and turning her back to him.

He scratched his head, joining her in bed, keeping a safe distance.

    Silence fell once more.

He was drifting off to sleep when he felt her presence beside him. He turned to see her, her hand clutching his arm, her voice small and apologetic.

“I’m sorry, Little Brother Yan Zhen. I shouldn’t have snapped at you.”

“It’s alright. It wasn’t your fault, Senior Sister Xue’er. I understand.”

“I’ll… I’ll talk to my mother.”

“We’re also at fault for lying to them. Let’s call it even. They’re our elders, after all. It’s not good to hold grudges.”

“Okay, I’ll listen to you. I won’t say anything to her.”

She was as docile as a puppy, making him want to pat her head.

“I think our charade is about to be exposed. What are you going to do, Senior Sister Xue’er?”

She hesitated for a moment, then spoke softly. “Can’t we… make this real?”

He yawned, his voice drowsy. “Don’t give up on yourself.”

“I’m not giving up on myself!” she protested. “There’s no one more suitable than you.”

“I’m sure there is.” He mumbled. “Just wait a little longer.”

    “There’s no point in waiting.”

    “Hmm?”

    “Because… because I love–”

She stopped abruptly. He had fallen asleep, his breathing even and steady.

She bit her lip, whispering her true feelings. “—Because I’ve always loved you, you idiot.”

The darkness swallowed her confession, the silence unbroken.

She snuggled closer to him, drifting off to sleep.

The next morning, he woke up on time. The first thing he saw was Mi Xue’er’s face. She was sitting beside him, gazing down at him with a mischievous smile.

She was still wearing her short dress, her bare legs and shoulders exposed, her hair cascading down her chest, her posture alluring.

“Good morning, Little Brother Yan Zhen~ Did you sleep well in my bed?” Her tone was playful, as if last night’s events had never happened.

He forced a smile. “It was… fine. It smelled nice. Different from my own bed.”

Her cheeks flushed. Nice smell? She had wet the bed! What nice smell?

“So, Little Brother Yan Zhen, you’re… ready for action this morning?” She pointed at his… arousal. “It seems I’m not completely unattractive after all.”

He quickly sat up, mortified. “That’s just a normal morning reaction,” he mumbled, his face burning.

“Hmm~” She had scored a point, and she was enjoying it. “Let me help you get dressed.”

“Ahem, I appreciate the offer, Senior Sister, but I can manage.”

“Don’t be shy! I’ve never dressed anyone before. Let me try!”

    “Uh…”

Don’t treat your adorable junior like a dress-up doll!

“Come on, Little Brother Yan Zhen! You’ve helped me so much! I have to do something for you in return!”

Why do I feel like you’re just trying to take advantage of me?

“Alright, thank you, Senior Sister Xue’er.”

    “First, take off your pants!”

“…On second thought, I think I’ll dress myself.”

“No! Let me do it! Take them off!”

    “No!”

    They began to bicker playfully.

Chapter 136 – Ling Long Lives in the Garden of Heavenly Harmony?! p2

Meanwhile, after the inner disciple selections, the nine peak lords gathered to discuss the results and their future plans.

“Sister Yan is quite interesting. She’s never actively recruited a disciple before, and now she’s the first to choose one,” Ning Yuan, the peak lord of Dream Drunken Peak, said, swirling his wine, a smile playing on his lips.

The peak lord of the Peak of Celestial Secrets, her beauty both alluring and mysterious, her figure mature and captivating, chuckled. “What was his name again? I saw him. He’s at the sixth level of Foundation Establishment. Decent talent, but he seems to have wasted some time. He’s not exactly a top-tier genius.”

“Mu Zhi’an. I heard from Junior Sister Lan that he performed well during Boundless Sea Peak’s trial. He seems to have a unique understanding of formations…” another peak lord said.

“Brother Yi was personally observing that trial, wasn’t he? How did he perform?” Ning Yuan asked, turning to Yi Hao, his smile widening.

Yi Hao seemed distracted. He didn’t respond. After a moment, he snapped out of his thoughts, chuckling. “He was alright. Nothing special.”

He exchanged a glance with Yu Ziyan, Xiang Yan, and the peak lord of Metamorphic Jewel Peak. Only the four of them knew about Ling Long. The inner disciple selections were over, but Mu Zhi’an’s true value… it remained. If too many people found out about Ling Long, their advantage would be gone. If they could build a good relationship with Mu Zhi’an, they might have a chance to approach Ling Long. It would be incredibly beneficial for their cultivation. They had to keep this opportunity secret.

“Brother Yi, you seem troubled. Did something happen?” Yu Ziyan asked, changing the subject.

Yi Hao hesitated, then sighed. “My Eight Treasures Cranes… they’re all gone. I don’t know who stole them…”

    “Oh?”

The peak lords exchanged glances, their interest piqued. Someone dared to steal Yi Hao’s precious cranes within the Two Polarities Sect?

“Did you try using a tracking technique, Brother Yi?”

“I did, but I couldn’t find them,” he replied, shaking his head.

“It seems they were well-prepared.” Yu Ziyan narrowed her eyes, glancing at the peak lord of the Peak of Celestial Secrets, smiling. “Perhaps Sister Yu can divine their location?”

Yi Hao nodded, about to ask, when Ning Yuan suddenly exclaimed, “Is that an Eight Treasures Crane?” He stared at the sky, his voice filled with disbelief. The other peak lords looked up and saw a silver dragon soaring through the air, an Eight Treasures Crane struggling in its jaws.

They stared at it, speechless, then they all exclaimed, “Senior Ling Long?!”

The thief was Ling Long?! They exchanged glances, then they all said, “Let’s follow it.”

Yi Hao stared at the dragon, his expression a mixture of shock and resignation, then he glanced at the other peak lords, his brow furrowing. He exchanged a glance with Yu Ziyan and Xiang Yan, then he followed them silently. He had planned to approach Mu Zhi’an slowly, to build a relationship… But now… It seemed their secret couldn’t be contained…

As Mu Zhi’an returned to the Garden of Heavenly Harmony, he saw Ling Long dropping an Eight Treasures Crane onto the ground, then transforming into her human form. He stared at her, speechless, then sighed.

“Senior Lin Ling, did you steal… I mean, did you borrow another crane from Peak Lord Yi?”

She nodded, pointing at the crane, then she looked at him, her lips parting slightly.

    “Aaaaa!”

“Peak Lord Yi’s mental breakdown is going to be epic…” He looked at the crane, nodding. “I understand. I’ll prepare your dinner.”

She nodded, satisfied, then entered the pavilion.

Meanwhile, the five peak lords who hadn’t been present at the Garden of Heavenly Harmony the previous day stared at the scene, their expressions filled with confusion and disbelief. Ling Long was living in the Jade Glass Palace? And she had brought back an Eight Treasures Crane for a disciple?

“Isn’t the Garden of Heavenly Harmony where Master Yan’s new inner disciple lives?”

The peak lord of the Peak of Celestial Secrets stared at the pavilion, her voice filled with disbelief. “Senior Ling Long is living with a disciple?”

“I remember a disciple causing a scene at the Jade Glass Palace, accusing another disciple of harboring a demonic cultivator. But the incident was dropped…”

Ning Yuan frowned. “Could that demon have been Senior Ling Long…?”

They stood in the cold wind, watching her enter the pavilion, speechless. They finally understood why Yan Ruyu had chosen Mu Zhi’an.

After a long silence, they looked at him, their gazes filled with a newfound respect.

Yan Ruyu smiled inwardly, her gaze sweeping over the peak lords, lingering on the two women with alluring figures.

Mu Zhi’an’s true value wasn’t just Ling Long… She touched her lips, her gaze fixed on him, her thoughts racing.

    He himself was a treasure…
