Chapter 93: A Lucky Coincidence
After devouring four bowls of stinky tofu and even finishing the remaining soup, Chen Yin leaned back contentedly, patting his stomach and saying:
“Ah, that hit the spot! Finally, a satisfying meal.”
“Thank you for your generosity, Miss Nan.” He smiled at her.
But Nan Xiaoxiang lowered her head.
“What’s wrong?”
“…I didn’t bring any money when you dragged me out.”
Chen Yin froze, his face falling.
“So I’m paying after all…”
Nan Xiaoxiang hid a smile, seemingly delighted to see him frustrated.
As Chen Yin reluctantly paid the bill, Nan Xiaoxiang chuckled.
“So, Young Master Chen, you lied about being broke?”
“It’s true!”
Chen Yin insisted, stuffing his money pouch back into his pocket. “This is my wife fund! Every penny counts!”
“Does Young Master Chen have a fiancée?”
“Uh… Can’t a single dog plan for the future?”
Nan Xiaoxiang laughed softly. “I think the young lady who accompanied you, Qingying, is quite beautiful. Why don’t you pursue her? Perhaps you’ll find your soulmate.”
“Her?”
Chen Yin thought about the woman who had stabbed him in the chest the first time they met and shook his head vehemently.
“No thanks. I’d like to live a little longer.”
“You’re in the prime of your youth, strong and healthy. Why would you say that? It’s not like she’s a succubus.”
She smiled playfully. “If you need help, I have a few prescriptions that might be useful.”
Chen Yin chuckled awkwardly. “…I didn’t know you were capable of making such suggestive jokes, Miss Nan.”
“Hehe, I have no idea what you’re talking about, Young Master Chen.”
Nan Xiaoxiang seemed to be in a good mood. She skipped ahead, her white dress swirling in the breeze.
The smile on her lips was different from her usual polite smile.
…It was no longer the restrained and elegant smile of a proper lady, but the carefree smile of a young girl.
“Alright, we’re done with our meal. Let’s head back to the clinic—”
She stopped mid-sentence, noticing that Chen Yin was staring at her intently.
“Young Master Chen?”
“Don’t move.”
Chen Yin suddenly reached out, cupping her face in his hands and gently wiping her lips with his sleeve.
“…You have some sauce from the stinky tofu on your mouth.”
Nan Xiaoxiang froze, too surprised to even resist.
A moment later, she was about to retort angrily, “H-how dare you do this to me in public—”
“Holding hands won’t make you pregnant, and neither will wiping your face.”
Chen Yin said nonchalantly, “I was just trying to be nice, afraid you’d embarrass yourself by walking around with sauce on your face, and you’re accusing me of taking advantage of you?”
“B-but no man would touch a woman’s face so intimately—”
“Then I’ll say your face took advantage of my hand.” Chen Yin retorted righteously. “I’m shaking with anger. When will we men finally stand up for ourselves?”
Nan Xiaoxiang wanted to punch him.
How could he justify his actions with such confidence?!
Suppressing her anger, she forced her voice to remain calm. “Young Master Chen, please behave yourself.”
“Such behavior in public is truly indecent. Please don’t—”
She stopped mid-sentence, realizing that Chen Yin wasn’t even looking at her.
His expression was no longer playful and carefree but calm and indifferent as he turned to look at something in the distance.
After a long silence, she heard him say softly:
“He’s gone.”
“Who?”
“The one who was watching us.”
Nan Xiaoxiang instantly understood.
“Was it… one of Young Master Ju’s attendants?”
“Most likely.”
Chen Yin resumed his casual demeanor, put his hands behind his head, and strolled towards the clinic.
Nan Xiaoxiang quickly caught up to him. “But if that attendant saw your actions and reports back to Young Master Ju, won’t the conflict between you two escalate?”
Chen Yin stopped and turned to her with a mischievous grin.
“…That’s exactly what I want.”
Nan Xiaoxiang was stunned.
He did it on purpose?
“Why…”
“Don’t ask so many questions.”
Chen Yin said calmly, “An eye for an eye. Just consider this me using you as a shield as well. We’re even now.”
“Let’s go back and watch the show.”
Nan Xiaoxiang couldn’t ask any further questions. She could only walk beside him, lost in thought. As they reached the entrance of the clinic, she saw Chen Yin stop and turn to her, extending his hand.
“What?”
“For the stinky tofu.” Chen Yin said seriously.
Nan Xiaoxiang stared at him blankly for a moment, then stammered:
“B-but you already paid—”
“I told you, that’s my wife fund.” Chen Yin said matter-of-factly. “You were the one who invited me to this meal, remember? Of course you have to reimburse me.”
Crack. Nan Xiaoxiang heard the sound of her own fist cracking.
…I was wrong.
This guy was still as annoying as ever.
On the top floor of a luxurious and grand restaurant on the east side of town…
“Crash!” A teacup shattered on the floor.
“Outrageous!”
Ju Shaohé’s face was dark with anger. “They’re already at the stage of touching faces and holding hands?”
“That Nan Xiaoxiang is so ungrateful! I’ve been pursuing her for so long, and she chooses an unknown little cultivator over me?”
A subordinate knelt before him and said respectfully, “We can’t be sure yet, Young Master. We were too far away, and I only saw the man’s actions. Miss Nan didn’t seem willing.”
“So you’re saying that Chen Yin was the one who initiated the physical contact with Miss Nan?”
A cold smile appeared in Ju Shaohé’s eyes. “Heh. You’ve just given me a legitimate reason to get rid of him.”
“Taking out this kid might even make Miss Nan see me in a new light.”
He stroked his chin thoughtfully, then said softly:
“Go. Take a team and keep an eye on him.”
“The moment he leaves the clinic alone, bring him to me!”
“Yes.” The subordinate bowed and was about to leave when he suddenly stopped and turned back.
“Young Master, there’s one more thing. The Sect Master has given strict orders for you to return to the sect within three days and stay there. You’re not allowed to wander off.”
Ju Shaohé said with displeasure, “Why is my father rushing me back? What’s he been up to these past few days?”
“Well…” The subordinate averted his gaze awkwardly. “I’m not sure.”
“Alright, alright, I understand.”
Ju Shaohé waved his hand impatiently. “I’ll return to the sect in three days. Let me have some fun with this little vixen for two more days.”
The subordinate bowed respectfully and left.
Meanwhile, in a ward at the Xiaoxiang Medical Clinic…
Qingying held a small metal box in her hand, its contents playing softly. She turned to Chen Yin.
“…It seems the rumors are true.”
“Ju Canghe is a cautious man. If he’s calling his precious son back to the sect, then he must be planning something big.”
Chen Yin frowned and said thoughtfully.
“So that old dog is really planning to take a bite out of the Mist Spirit Sect.”
“It makes sense. The only one left in the Mist Spirit Sect who can hold their own is that inexperienced youngster, Frost Moon Sword Immortal Shen Shuanglian. She lacks both the experience and the authority to lead the sect.”
“The Mist Spirit Sect is vulnerable now. Other sects might still be hesitant to openly attack, considering their past relationships. But the Canghe Sword Sect has been coveting the Mist Spirit Sect’s position for a long time. They won’t miss this opportunity.”
Qingying said with a smirk, “If you’re not careful, your beloved Senior Sister might be in danger.”
“Heh, I have faith in her.”
Chen Yin still had a faint smile on his lips. “She’s much stronger than you think.”
Qingying asked curiously, “Why are you so sure?”
“Because I know her.”
Chen Yin chuckled silently. “She’s not the type to be reckless. If she needs help, she’ll ask my Master.”
…Of course…
Only if it didn’t involve him.
If he was in danger, that girl would lose all sense of reason. Chen Yin didn’t want to see her jump off another cliff for him.
“Since we’ve stumbled upon this, we might as well take care of it for her.”
Chen Yin stretched and suddenly changed the subject. “By the way, this little gadget of yours is quite useful. Where did you get it? Can you get me one too?”
Qingying snorted. “One of a kind, no copies available. Even if you want one, I won’t give it to you.”
She wouldn’t tell him that it was thanks to her System.
Although her System wasn’t as restrictive as those of other Chosen Ones, and the plot wasn’t as rigid, it was still best to keep it a secret.
Revealing its existence would only bring trouble.
But she didn’t know that Chen Yin was looking at the metal box with a strange expression.
…Seriously?
You seem like a decent person, but you have a System too?
During their first encounter, Qingying had asked him, “Are you a Chosen One too?”
At the time, Chen Yin didn’t know what a Chosen One was and didn’t pay much attention to her question.
But now he knew.
…I need to find a way to pry the secret of her System from this girl.
Chen Yin was already plotting how to interrogate her.
Night had fallen, and he had coaxed the little foxes to bed.
Several little foxes were sprawled out on the large bed, their fluffy ears and tails creating a heartwarming scene.
Luo Luo and Ya Ya were nestled together, their childish faces peaceful and serene, their lips moving slightly in their sleep.
Chen Yin sat by the bed, gently stroking Luo Luo’s soft hair, when he suddenly heard a faint sound from the roof.
…He’s here. Chen Yin exchanged a look with Qingying.
“Take care of Luo Luo and the others,” he whispered.
Qingying nodded.
Chen Yin left the room, stretched lazily, pretending to be taking a walk because he couldn’t sleep, and strolled towards the exit of the clinic.
