Chapter 93: I Can Provide You with a Comfortable Life Too
“Xiaonuo, Xiaonuo, I’m sorry! Don’t ignore me!”
Early in the morning, Ruo Xiaoxi flitted around Lan Yinuo like a sparrow, apologizing profusely.
She knew she was wrong about the birthday gift. She would make it up to Xiaonuo.
The fiery Xiaonuo from last night had reverted to her usual shy and soft-spoken self. But such girls could be surprisingly terrifying when angered.
Quiet girls weren’t immune to anger; everyone had emotions.
“I’m sorry, Xiaonuo. I didn’t consider your feelings. I’m an idiot.”
“Hmph, I’ve heard enough apologies. Stop saying sorry.” Lan Yinuo finally responded, feigning annoyance.
Ruo Xiaoxi quickly switched languages. “Sumimasen! Sorry! Mianhabnida!”
“Y-you even know Korean?”
“Hee hee, just a few phrases. Xiaonuo is so smart, you recognized them all.”
“It’s nothing… I didn’t mean… You don’t have to apologize anymore. You were very… diligent last night, and your apology is sincere. I forgive you.”
Lan Yinuo smiled at Ruo Xiaoxi, unable to stay angry. She still liked her, after all.
Xiaomei and An’an, who’d been silently observing the drama, chimed in, “That’s right, that’s right. Forgive and forget. You’re stuck with each other anyway.”
“You! Xiaomei! An’an!”
Lan Yinuo glared at them, but they quickly scurried away.
“Haa… I can’t with them. Xiaoxi, since you already gave that box of chocolates away, I’ll make you another one.”
“What?! You’ll make me another one?”
“Of course. You didn’t even get to taste the chocolates I made. I have to make you more.”
“Waaaaah!” Ruo Xiaoxi suddenly hugged Lan Yinuo, startling her. Xiaonuo quickly looked around, hoping the dorm supervisor hadn’t seen them.
“Xiaonuo, you’re so sweet! I love you!”
“Hmph, Xiaoxi, your mouth is full of lies. I don’t believe you. If you misbehave again, I’ll… do that again, understand?” Lan Yinuo said softly, puffing out her chest.
The storm had passed as quickly as it arrived, the dark clouds dissipating.
Seeing Xiaonuo’s anger subside, Ruo Xiaoxi resumed her usual chatter, and they went to the cafeteria for breakfast, then back to military training.
Ruo Xiaoxi bought a steamed bun and a tea egg, while Lan Yinuo got her usual preserved egg and lean meat congee, a fried dough stick, and soy milk. They found a table and sat down.
“Xiaoxi, why are you only eating a bun and a tea egg? That’s not enough, is it?” Lan Yinuo asked, looking at Ruo Xiaoxi’s meager breakfast.
Ruo Xiaoxi, seemingly unconcerned, took a bite of her bun and looked at Lan Yinuo quizzically.
“It’s fine. I’m not that hungry. I don’t eat a lot!”
“Even if you don’t eat a lot, you can’t just have a bun and an egg! We have military training all morning! We won’t eat again until lunch! What if you faint from hunger?”
“I won’t. I’m very healthy. And I don’t have to run anyway.”
As a vampire, I don’t need to eat breakfast, Ruo Xiaoxi thought. The real problem was the midday sun. Although Senior Yifulan said magic could protect her from sunlight, she hadn’t learned any yet.
Military training was only for a week, and she’d already secured a tacit agreement with the instructor for plenty of breaks.
Remembering this, Lan Yinuo asked softly, “Are you feeling alright? Should I get you some brown sugar water?”
“Ah? N-no need. I was faking. I’m not really… on my period.”
“You were faking?” Lan Yinuo blinked, taking a sip of soy milk. “You’re so naughty! Faking your period to skip military training? No way! You’re running with me.”
“I can only run in the morning and afternoon. I can’t do midday. You know I’m… delicate. I can’t handle it…”
“You just said you were healthy. Which means you need a nutritious breakfast even more… Wait, Xiaoxi, can I ask you something?” Lan Yinuo suddenly lowered her voice.
“What is it?”
“Mmm… it’s a bit awkward to ask, and I don’t mean anything by it, but… is your family… struggling financially?”
“Are you asking if I’m poor, Xiaonuo?”
“Ah! No, that’s not what I meant! I’m sorry! But… I just happened to see that you only have thirty yuan on your meal card. I was wondering why you haven’t added more money…”
Coupled with the meager breakfast, Lan Yinuo assumed Ruo Xiaoxi’s family must be having financial difficulties, forcing her to be so frugal.
But that wasn’t right! Growing girls needed to eat properly!
“Oh… you mean that. You have like seven or eight hundred on yours, Xiaonuo. Well, my family isn’t… rich. We’re… comfortable, I guess. Not as wealthy as yours.”
“Don’t say ‘yours,’ as if you and I are separate. I’ll go buy you another breakfast. And you can use my meal card anytime!”
Hearing that Ruo Xiaoxi was so frugal due to financial hardship, Lan Yinuo’s heart ached. She stood up, ready to buy more food.
The girl she liked was so beautiful and lovely; she deserved better than this.
“Wait, no! I really don’t need it! It’s fine! Sit down!”
Ruo Xiaoxi quickly grabbed her arm. It wasn’t that she couldn’t afford food; she just didn’t need to eat! That’s why she hadn’t added much money to her card. She wasn’t that poor!
Lan Yinuo reluctantly sat back down, her fists clenched on the table. “Why won’t you let me buy you food? Are you sure you’ll be full?”
“I’ll be fine. You’re too kind to me, Xiaonuo.”
“Because I like you! It’s natural to be kind to someone you like. Xiaoxi, do you like that Senior Xia because she’s rich? Do you need money, so you…”
“I heard her family is very wealthy. Her parents run some international company. She’s a rich heiress… If that’s the case, Xiaoxi, I can provide you with a comfortable life too!”
