Chapter 7: Worries of an Old Mother
The stench of decay perpetually hung in the sewers, largely due to the abundance of people like Jasmine, who dealt with killing but not burying. After all, no one would venture into the sewers to look, so some less scrupulous individuals would simply toss the bodies down there after killing them. Over time, as the corpses rotted, the smell became unbearable.
Coupled with the existing filth below, the odor was exceptionally pungent.
The haughty vampires would absolutely never enter the sewers. Their noses were no less sensitive than those of werewolves. Werewolves might not be picky, but vampires were extremely particular. Asking them to enter the sewers? Not a chance in this lifetime. That’s why the sewers became a haven for other races, and vampires often referred to them as sewer rats.
Jasmine lingered outside for a while to air out the smell before returning to her quarters at the school. She quickly changed her clothes, stuffed them into a basin, and poured in laundry detergent to mask the odor. At the same time, she entered the bathroom to wash herself. Forget about vampires being unable to tolerate the stench of the sewers; she couldn’t either. Jasmine’s nose was even more sensitive than that of vampires and werewolves. Fortunately, she could control her sense of smell, otherwise, she would have been driven out as soon as she went down there.
Jasmine lathered herself with soap several times, only feeling at ease after confirming that the smell was gone. She didn’t bother much with her slightly damp hair, choosing instead to pull a chair onto the balcony. It was midday, and the sun outside was bright and warm, but the entire school was silent. All the vampires were asleep, and even the humans had to adjust their schedules accordingly, so the surroundings were deathly still.
The sunlight fell on Jasmine, making her stretch involuntarily. She was wearing a nightgown, and her damp hair left a trail of moisture on her shoulders. She enjoyed the breeze and sunshine, waiting for her hair to dry naturally. After basking in the sun for a while, Jasmine entered the room, collected Adele’s clothes that she had washed the night before, folded them neatly, drew the curtains, yawned, and burrowed into the soft bedding.
She woke up at six in the afternoon. The other humans had already woken up, as eight hours of sleep was enough for a human. How could they possibly sleep for a full 12 hours from morning till night like vampires? However, they weren’t allowed to move around freely and could only stay in their small rooms, doing who knows what.
After waking up, Jasmine checked the time and leisurely washed up, dressed in her maid uniform, and then tucked Adele’s clothes under her arm. She left the room promptly at 6:30. Adele usually woke up around this time and must be washing up by now. By the time Jasmine arrived, it would be time for her to change clothes.
However, when Jasmine left her room, there weren’t many people left in the servants’ quarters. After all, they had to hurry and prepare to serve their masters before they woke up and attend to their washing needs after they were awake. In this aspect, Adele was very good. She had been a very independent young lady since she was a child, but this might also have something to do with Jasmine.
Because on the morning after Jasmine arrived at Blake Castle, the head maid instructed her to help Adele wash up. But all Jasmine could do was squeeze the toothpaste for Adele and let her wash up herself. Adele was a bit confused, not understanding why she had to do these things herself.
Jasmine righteously declared, “I started washing up by myself when I was three years old. Miss Adele is already six years old, do you still need someone to help you?”
This child had been arrogant since she was young. Hearing Jasmine say this, her grape-like eyes widened, and she declared stubbornly, “Adele can do it herself!”
The first time she brushed her teeth by herself, Adele didn’t handle it very well, her smiling face covered in toothpaste foam. Jasmine handed her a towel and let her wipe her face herself.
If it weren’t for Jasmine, perhaps Adele would have been a spoiled young mistress who relied on others for everything. But because she had Jasmine by her side since childhood, Adele was different from many other young mistresses. She was more accustomed to doing things herself.
She didn’t even need Jasmine’s help to get dressed.
When Jasmine arrived, Adele had indeed finished washing up. She was sitting on the sofa in the living room, sipping the coffee she had brewed herself – yes, Adele could even brew her own coffee.
Vampires couldn’t taste the flavor of coffee, but they had a special method: sugar cubes. These sugar cubes were different from human sugar cubes; they were made of blood. Coffee soaked in blood allowed vampires to taste the flavor. Similarly, these sugar cubes could also be added to black tea.
However, Adele’s sugar cubes were specially made with artificial blood instead of human blood.
Adele didn’t need Jasmine’s help to wash up, didn’t need her help to comb her hair, didn’t need her help to brew coffee. She would do everything she could by herself, which undoubtedly made Jasmine’s job much easier. It was also because Adele was an easy-to-care-for client that Jasmine was willing to stay by her side all this time.
The second young mistress of the Blake family was not like this. She was so pampered that she needed three to five maids to help her even with bathing.
Lost in her random thoughts, Jasmine maintained her usual calm and collected expression as she placed Adele’s clothes in front of her. “Miss, you should change your clothes now.”
“Hmm.”
Adele put down her teacup, took her clothes, and walked into the bedroom, seemingly preparing to change out of Jasmine’s sight.
In this regard, Adele treated Jasmine like a person – or rather, as an equal. The second young mistress wouldn’t do this. She wouldn’t change her clothes herself, even having maids help her bathe. She wasn’t the least bit embarrassed and didn’t feel shy about exposing her body in front of others. Because in the eyes of these noble ladies, maids were just objects.
This applied not only to human maids but also to low-level vampire maids. Ordering them around was like using tools. Just as no one would worry about a chair or a table seeing them while changing clothes, they didn’t worry about maids seeing their bodies either.
In this respect, Adele was different. She would be shy, would hide from her, and would go to a place where no one was around to change her clothes.
When Adele came out, she was already wearing her school uniform. She was carrying a black leather briefcase and nodded slightly at Jasmine. “Then I’ll be going now.”
“Yes, Miss.” Jasmine bowed and saw Adele off. After she left, Jasmine cleaned Adele’s room. There wasn’t much to clean, as they had only moved in yesterday. How dirty could it be? Besides, Adele would make her own bed, and the quilt and changed pajamas were neatly folded on the bed. She only needed to take Adele’s changed clothes and wash them.
After leaving Adele’s room, Jasmine went to the servants’ dining hall for her breakfast. Having not eaten for a full twelve hours, Jasmine was starving. Seeing the dishes in the dining hall, which were basically the same as those in the castle, she once again missed the delicacies of her hometown before transmigrating.
Braised pork, chicken cooked in an earthen pot, brown sugar glutinous rice cake, boiled beef, red bean dumplings, pickled fish… She silently recited the names of the dishes in her mind, then ordered a beef stew with potatoes.
There was a lot of meat in the dining hall because vampires needed to drink blood. The school couldn’t provide a large amount of high-quality human blood, so they could only provide high-quality animal blood. These noble young masters and mistresses, who were used to the finest food and drink at home, couldn’t stomach low-quality things. However, high-quality human blood was too expensive, and a school definitely couldn’t afford it for all its students. Occasionally, they could provide it a few times, but most of the time, they could only drink other types of blood.
Jasmine was eating beef stew with potatoes and white bread when Anna, the girl with freckles, arrived at the dining hall halfway through her meal. She took a tray, filled it with food, and sat down next to Jasmine, peering at her. She leaned closer to Jasmine and whispered, “Jasmine, why are you still here?”
“?” Where else should she be?
Perhaps Jasmine’s gaze made Anna realize that she didn’t know anything, so she explained the situation on her own, “Today is the second day of the new semester, and there should be a welcoming party for the new students. Last year at this time, my master spent a long time getting dressed, and I was busy helping her with her hair and makeup.”
“…Don’t they all wear uniforms?”
“Although they are all uniforms, they definitely look more beautiful after putting on makeup. Last year, my master spent a long time just choosing her favorite perfume. Look…” Anna tilted her head, and Jasmine immediately scanned the entire dining hall. “The maids who came with the first-year students yesterday are not here now. They are all busy dressing up their masters.”
“Jasmine, where’s your master?”
She scooped a piece of potato into her mouth with a spoon and mumbled, “She left a long time ago.”
Adele was no different today than usual. Her beautiful face didn’t need any adornment; just standing there was enough to attract attention. But on such an occasion, wouldn’t she be overshadowed by others if she didn’t wear any makeup at all? Adele, this child… could it be that she was raised too simply by her? A strange sense of worry, like that of an old mother, arose in Jasmine’s heart.
She finished her meal hastily and answered Anna’s puzzled question, “Jasmine, where are you going?” with, “I’m going back to do laundry.”
However, in reality, after finishing the laundry, she avoided everyone and secretly climbed onto the beams of the freshman hall. The hall had a high ceiling, and crystal chandeliers hung from the beams. Jasmine’s black and white maid uniform became her best camouflage in the darkness. The only thing that displeased Jasmine was the layer of dust on the beams, which would definitely dirty her dress.
She sat on the beam, leaning forward and observing the students below.
There weren’t that many people, only sixty or seventy in total. This small number was disheartening, but there was no helping it. There weren’t that many nobles among the vampires, and being able to gather this many for a single grade was already quite good. She accurately located Adele in the crowd and realized: It seemed like Adele was the only one who wasn’t wearing makeup?! Even the male vampires were wearing makeup!
