    Chapter 37

When Feng Chiyue was angry, anything you said could be misinterpreted. But staying silent was even worse, as it would be taken as tacit agreement and added to the already lengthy list of offenses. Ming Jian Su sighed inwardly, pulled Feng Chiyue into her embrace, and said softly, “Junior Sister, I rely on you for my livelihood.” She quickly reviewed the events that had transpired, searching for a possible misstep. “I was the one who was ignorant and ungrateful, failing to appreciate your kindness.”

“Exactly,” Feng Chiyue said, nodding vigorously. She pushed against Ming Jian Su, her hand pressing against her chest. After a moment of hesitation, her grip loosened. As Ming Jian Su tightened her hold on her wrist, they drew closer. Feng Chiyue’s eyes were red-rimmed, her gaze hazy and unfocused. She looked up at Ming Jian Su. “Why did you stop?”

“I was wrong, Junior Sister. Punish me—” Ming Jian Su thought for a moment. “Punish me by forbidding me from being intimate with you.”

This was a severe punishment, even worse than lack of sleep, insufficient Cinnabar Jade, or endless work.

    Feng Chiyue was displeased.

“Is that really a punishment for you?”

She knew it. Ming Jian Su was cunning and deceitful, a truly wicked woman! Her hand trailed down from Ming Jian Su’s chest to her waist, pinching her lightly. But gradually, her movements softened, the pinching turning into gentle caresses.

Ming Jian Su moaned softly, unable to bear it any longer. She grabbed Feng Chiyue’s hand, stopping her from going any further.

Feng Chiyue, who had already calmed down, was now fueled by a renewed wave of frustration sparked by Ming Jian Su’s attempt to restrain her. She bit her lip, her brow furrowed. The more Ming Jian Su tried to stop her, the more determined she became.

She leaned forward and bit Ming Jian Su’s red lips, a gesture of both retaliation and seduction. She didn’t pull away, pressing her advantage as Ming Jian Su yielded. After a long while, she finally released Ming Jian Su, adjusted her disheveled robes, and said magnanimously, “I forgive you.”

Ming Jian Su: “…” Her body was ablaze with desire, the flames reaching their peak, and then her junior sister suddenly stopped. “Junior Sister,” she whispered, her lips brushing against Feng Chiyue’s ear.

She held her tightly, her voice losing its usual clarity, replaced by a seductive huskiness. Feng Chiyue responded with a lazy hum, her hand trailing across Ming Jian Su’s waist.

Ming Jian Su sighed softly and recited the Serenity Sutra to suppress the turbulent emotions within her. Once she had calmed down, she said, “The phoenix feather that Tushan Xiu Rong gave me is from the same source as the one on my sword tassel. I suspect it’s related to the Phoenix Sovereign.”

Feng Chiyue, her anger subsided, no longer felt any resentment towards the mention of “phoenix feather”.

She found a comfortable position in Ming Jian Su’s embrace and said lazily, “Why, has Phoenix Mountain asked you to search for the Phoenix Sovereign?” Seeing Ming Jian Su’s surprised expression, she added, “I know you secretly contacted Feng Yao.”

“It wasn’t secret. It was perfectly open and aboveboard,” Ming Jian Su retorted, but under Feng Chiyue’s cold glare, she quickly changed the subject. “Don’t you want to know what happened to you before your Nirvana?” She made her intentions clear, but Feng Chiyue simply shook her head. “No.”

“What if your enemies from before your Nirvana are still around?”

Feng Chiyue looked up at her and tapped her finger against Ming Jian Su’s heart, a lazy smile on her lips. “Shouldn’t I be asking you that?” If there were any obstacles, Ming Jian Su would eliminate them for her. Why should she bother thinking about it?

Ming Jian Su caught her finger and said firmly, “I’ll remove all obstacles for you.” Of course, she would also eliminate those who weren’t “obstacles.” She wouldn’t allow anyone else to covet her junior sister.

After appeasing Feng Chiyue, Ming Jian Su lingered with her for a while before finally inquiring about Zhen Yuan True Person and Tushan Xiu Rong.

Zhu Wan entered the hall, her gaze lingering on Feng Chiyue, nestled in Ming Jian Su’s arms, for only a fleeting moment before she quickly averted it. Ever since her Master’s return, their “reunion after a long separation” had become increasingly unrestrained and oblivious to others. Someone should take pity on her! She complained inwardly, but her expression remained respectful. “They were taken away by the Emperor’s daughter,” she reported.

Ming Jian Su nodded and dismissed Zhu Wan. She took out the Chaos Mirror and saw a new request. It was from Tushan Xiu Rong, asking to exchange name seals. She glanced at Feng Chiyue, who was playing with her hair, and decided to be completely transparent. “Junior Sister, Tushan Xiu Rong wants to exchange name seals with me.”

Feng Chiyue glanced at her sideways. “Go ahead.”

“Alright,” Ming Jian Su said, then contacted Tushan Xiu Rong. She kept Feng Chiyue in her embrace, the Chaos Mirror clearly visible to her.

“The origin of that feather is quite unusual,” Tushan Xiu Rong said. “I’d like to discuss it with you in person.”

Ming Jian Su frowned, pondering her words. Feng Chiyue, impatient with her hesitation, replied on her behalf, “Come to Dong’e Mountain.” Then she went back to browsing other messages.

The commotion caused by the fight in Dong’e Mountain had spread. Some idle immortals had broadcast the scene on the Chaos Mirror, and even wandering immortals thousands of miles away knew that the White Phase Star Monarch had signed a Death Duel invitation with the East Abode Master and had been utterly defeated. This wasn’t just an ordinary immortal, but a Star Monarch! How powerful was the East Abode Master? Wasn’t she afraid of making enemies? The White Phase Star Monarch had traveled extensively and had many connections, didn’t he?

    — Rumor has it that Zhen Yuan True Person was also on the Death Duel invitation, but thanks to the Emperor’s daughter’s intervention, he barely escaped with his life.

    — Is the East Abode Master really that fierce?

    — I told you not to provoke Feng Chiyue, but you wouldn’t listen.

    — To the Daoist friend above, I remember your name. You were the loudest one mocking Feng Chiyue before.

“What happens when a Star Monarch dies?” Feng Chiyue asked casually, her chin resting on her hand.

“Many Star Monarchs perished in the war between the immortals and demons, and the Heavenly Court didn’t collapse. Nothing will happen,” Ming Jian Su said calmly. The White Phase Star Monarch had signed the Death Duel invitation himself. She hadn’t forced him.

“The Celestial Feather Ministry will be busy,” Feng Chiyue said. Many Feather Clan immortals had been watching Bai Zi Feng and the White Phase Star Monarch closely. Now that their hopes had been dashed, they would either have to resign themselves to being wandering immortals or obediently register with the Ministry and wait for the upcoming examination. “Those old geezers in Danxue Mountain must be furious.”

“I wish they would just die of anger,” Ming Jian Su said regretfully. Eliminating the Danxue Mountain lineage was part of her future plans, and saving herself some effort would be ideal.

The Danxue Mountain lineage was indeed furious, their anger followed by a deep sense of apprehension. They were starting to regret provoking Feng Chiyue. After all, she was a solitary Phoenix. They could have simply ignored her. If they hadn’t targeted her, they wouldn’t have made a powerful enemy of Dong’e Mountain.

“Many Feather Clans have sent messages saying they can’t withstand the pressure from the Celestial Feather Ministry,” the Vermilion Bird Elder said, his face grim. Those smaller factions were being polite, but their message was clear: either Danxue Mountain stepped in to fight, or they would concede. After all, they weren’t the ones who would suffer the most.

“He was a Star Monarch! Won’t the Heavenly Emperor intervene?” the Swan Goose Elder lamented.

“The White Phase Star Monarch signed the Death Duel invitation himself. Even if the Heavenly Court wanted to intervene, they couldn’t,” the Vermilion Bird Elder said coldly. He no longer cared about that idiotic White Phase Star Monarch. “Has anyone suspicious approached Danxue Mountain?” he asked.

The elder guarding the Zhenyu Sword shook his head. “No.” He was now leaning towards the first theory: the Suxin Sword Master had secretly placed the sword in the Red Jade Cave hundreds of years ago, and it had never had a second owner. In that case, they had no one to seek revenge from. So what if the Zhenyu Sword fetched a high price at auction? Could it possibly compensate for the loss of the Red Agate vein?

“What about South Li Mountain?” the Swan Goose Elder asked.

The Vermilion Bird Elder sighed. “Ever since she moved to South Li Mountain, she has rarely interfered in our affairs.”

“Do you think she’s avoiding Danxue Mountain because she regrets it?” the Bifang Elder muttered softly. Before embarking on the path of betrayal, Chang Li had been one of the Phoenix Sovereign’s closest confidantes.

“Watch your words!” the Vermilion Bird Elder snapped at the Bifang Elder. Regardless of whether Chang Li regretted it or not, there was no turning back for her. She could only continue to suppress Phoenix Mountain, ensuring that the flames of hatred never reignited. He was silent for a moment, then said, “Proceed with the auction of the Zhenyu Sword. Don’t worry about anything else for now.”

At that moment, Chang Li was in the Purple Empyrean Palace, seeking an audience with the Heavenly Emperor.

When Chu Yi reported back, she said that by the time she arrived, it was already too late. The White Phase Star Monarch was dead.

The Heavenly Emperor, however, was still furious. He felt that Ming Jian Su had shown him no respect as the Heavenly Emperor.

Even without an official position, the White Phase Star Monarch was a Star Monarch, one of the pillars of the Heavenly Court. She had killed him like a chicken. Did she have any regard for the authority of the Heavenly Court and the Star Monarchs? If she could kill the White Phase Star Monarch today, what about tomorrow? How powerful had she become? Was there no one in the Heavenly Court who could control her? The thought filled him with dread.

The uneasiness he had felt under the Phoenix Sovereign’s oppressive presence resurfaced, taking root and growing in his heart. He possessed the Mandate of Heaven, but why couldn’t it make him the most powerful being in the Immortal Realm? If he didn’t have the Mandate of Heaven, who could he possibly defeat?

Chang Li had always known what troubled the Heavenly Emperor. Had he agreed to Ming Ji’s terms so readily for the sake of peace between the two realms? No, they all had their own selfish motives. Without mentioning the White Phase Star Monarch, she said calmly, “The Celestial Feather Ministry is compiling a complete registry of the Feather Clan, just like in the old days. Has the Celestial Mother given them some powerful artifact?”

The Heavenly Emperor’s brow furrowed. What artifact could the Celestial Mother possibly possess that could compile a Feather Clan registry? The only thing in existence capable of such a feat was the Career Book, which was equal in power to the Merit Mirror. In the past, the Career Book had belonged to the Phoenix Sovereign. After her fall into the Demon Abyss, its whereabouts had remained unknown. But now… A chill ran down his spine. “The Celestial Feather Career Book,” he murmured.

“Perhaps the Phoenixes have been keeping the Phoenix Sovereign’s belongings all along?” Chang Li said with a faint smile.

“Impossible,” the Heavenly Emperor said, shaking his head. He was silent for a moment. “Two hundred years after the Phoenix Sovereign fell into the Demon Abyss, Ming Ji was slain by the Suxin Sword Master. But before we could question her, news of her death arrived. Since then, no one has mentioned the Phoenix Sovereign.” The Demon Abyss claimed to know nothing, but the Heavenly Emperor knew better. He had made an enemy of Tushan Liusu. She wouldn’t tell him the truth. “We assumed that Ming Ji hated the Phoenix Sovereign and would have killed her. But what if he didn’t?”

“What are you planning to do, Your Majesty?” Chang Li asked.

“The Phoenix Sovereign cared deeply about the Feather Clan. If she’s still alive, she would definitely intervene if we targeted Phoenix Mountain,” the Heavenly Emperor said. However, he immediately dismissed this malicious thought, not because the Phoenixes were innocent, but because the Celestial Mother had emerged from seclusion. He couldn’t afford to act recklessly. After a moment of deliberation, he said to Chang Li, “Go to the Demon Abyss and investigate the Phoenix Sovereign’s whereabouts. Remember, don’t alert the demons until you have a definitive answer.”

This was precisely what Chang Li had been waiting for. Ever since the incident at the Celestial Feather Ministry, her unease had been growing stronger. She needed to go to the Demon Abyss herself and uncover the truth that had been haunting her for so long. After bowing to the Heavenly Emperor, she left the Purple Empyrean Palace. However, as soon as she disappeared, a clear, silvery moonlight filled the cloud-wreathed hall. A graceful immortal emerged from the moonlight.

Seeing the Celestial Mother, the Heavenly Emperor’s expression darkened.

“Going to the Demon Realm to eliminate the Phoenix Sovereign once you find her?” the Celestial Mother said, her gaze sweeping over him.

The Heavenly Emperor, having argued with the Celestial Mother countless times, didn’t bother debating the past. “It’s already been done. There’s no changing it. Should we wait for her to return to the Immortal Realm and unleash a war of vengeance with Phoenix Mountain?”

The Celestial Mother looked at him sarcastically.

He was irritated by her expression. “Chang Yi,” he said in a low voice, “we are one. Yin and Yang, united as the Supreme.”

“Supreme?” The Celestial Mother chuckled softly but didn’t respond. Why couldn’t the Mandate of Heaven be hers alone? Once she cultivated the Taiji Dao Body, encompassing both Yin and Yang, she would become the only true Supreme. Concealing the glint of ambition in her eyes, she gave the Heavenly Emperor a meaningful look, then vanished from the Purple Empyrean Palace.

The Heavenly Emperor stood there for a long time, then looked up at the ceiling of the palace. There, shining brightly, was the Mandate of Heaven Star, but it flickered occasionally, a sign of turbulent destiny. Unlike his father, even after over a thousand years, his Mandate of Heaven Star had never truly stabilized. He attributed it to the Phoenix Sovereign’s powerful aura and the Celestial Mother’s rebellious nature… But was that truly the case?

    Night fell.

The Dharma Hall was brightly lit.

Feng Chiyue sat beside Ming Jian Su, waiting to be fed. Tushan Xiu Rong sat at a bronze table nearby, looking anxious and uneasy. She hadn’t touched the food on the table. Instead, she took out a Qiankun bag and said hesitantly, “This is all of Fellow Daoist Zhen Yuan’s possessions.” She hadn’t forgotten her mission to “buy his life.”

“What about yours?” Feng Chiyue asked casually.

Tushan Xiu Rong’s expression flickered, and she pursed her lips. “My name wasn’t on the Death Duel invitation.”

“You’re his fellow Daoist,” Feng Chiyue said. “Shouldn’t you help him out and pay off his debts?”

Tushan Xiu Rong replied without hesitation, “I’ve already repaid my past debts. After this, we go our separate ways.” She wouldn’t pay a single Cinnabar Jade.

Before Feng Chiyue could lament the complexities of friendship, Ming Jian Su placed a piece of silverfish on her lips. After tasting it, Feng Chiyue said, “This silverfish is tender and boneless. Can we raise them in our mountain?”

“Deep-sea fish,” Ming Jian Su replied simply.

Feng Chiyue immediately abandoned the idea of raising seafood in Dong’e Mountain. “Deep-sea fish” was synonymous with “ugly” in her mind.

Ming Jian Su glanced at Tushan Xiu Rong and subtly blocked her view, preventing her from staring at her junior sister. “Didn’t you want to talk about the feather?” she asked.

Tushan Xiu Rong snapped out of her thoughts, remembering the second reason for her visit to Dong’e Mountain, the excuse she had used to plead for Zhen Yuan True Person’s life. She let out a sigh. “My Elder Sister gave me that phoenix feather.”

Most Elder Sisters of Qingqiu fox immortals were also foxes, and there were countless fox immortals in the Qingqiu Kingdom. Who knew which one she was talking about? Whether in the mortal realm or the Immortal Realm, people always spoke in such vague terms. “What’s your Elder Sister’s name?” Ming Jian Su asked.

Tushan Xiu Rong looked around furtively, then lowered her voice, confused. “Tushan Liusu.”

Feng Chiyue glared at her. “You colluded with the Demon Lord.” And she had the audacity to come here.

Tushan Xiu Rong had heard these accusations countless times. They no longer bothered her.

Ming Jian Su used food to silence Feng Chiyue, then looked at Tushan Xiu Rong, her gaze suddenly turning cold and sharp. This fox had come to Dong’e Mountain and given her the phoenix feather.

Could it be that she knew about her junior sister’s situation before her Nirvana? Was she here to threaten her? Should she just kill her and silence her? A murderous intent flickered in her eyes. The open doors of the hall slowly creaked shut. A surge of energy swept through the hall, the candles flickering wildly, their shadows dancing menacingly on the walls. “Do you know the whereabouts of the Phoenix Sovereign?”

Tushan Xiu Rong’s scalp tingled. Ming Jian Su’s gaze was piercing, sending chills down her spine. She felt as if she were standing in a biting wind.

She swallowed nervously, and her shadow involuntarily transformed into a nine-tailed fox. “I don’t know,” she said, her voice barely a whisper. A faint sword cry rang out, and her pupils contracted sharply. “I don’t know!” she repeated, her voice rising in panic.

“Why did you give me the phoenix feather?” Ming Jian Su asked calmly.

Tushan Xiu Rong was filled with regret. Dong’e Mountain was a dragon’s den, a tiger’s lair! Why had she been so foolish as to walk right into it? She should have just discussed this on the Chaos Mirror. That way, she wouldn’t have to face Ming Jian Su’s terrifying presence. “M-My Elder Sister told me to,” she stammered. After falling into the demonic path, Tushan Liusu hadn’t severed ties with Qingqiu. She didn’t understand why her Elder Sister had said that giving the feather to Ming Jian Su would be of great use. She didn’t even know how her Elder Sister, now the Demon Lord, had formed a connection with the East Abode Master, one of the guardians of the Immortal Realm. If this got out, who knew what kind of chaos it would cause in the Heavenly Court?

Ming Jian Su: “…” Tushan Xiu Rong had said a lot, but aside from learning that the feather belonged to the Phoenix Sovereign, she had gained nothing useful. The killing intent in her eyes receded. Ignoring Tushan Xiu Rong, who was so terrified that her fox tail had materialized, she turned to Feng Chiyue, who had finished eating, and wiped her lips.

“Even the Demon Realm knows about your fondness for phoenix feathers,” Feng Chiyue said. “Do you have anything to say for yourself?”

Ming Jian Su sighed. Her junior sister truly had a knack for focusing on the most important points. “The demons hate me. This is clearly a slanderous accusation,” she said seriously. Then, softening her voice, she added, “Don’t you know me, Junior Sister? Aside from the feather on Eternal Sword, I haven’t touched any other feathers.”

Feng Chiyue considered her words for a moment, then grudgingly accepted her explanation. She glanced at Tushan Xiu Rong. “Birds of a feather flock together. She’s in cahoots with Baiyang and Zhen Yuan. She deserves to die!”

    Tushan Xiu Rong: “…” I don’t.

Ming Jian Su, taking Feng Chiyue’s opinion into consideration, flicked her hand, sending a beam of sword intent towards Tushan Xiu Rong. “She can contact Tushan Liusu,” she explained to Feng Chiyue. “She might not know the Phoenix Sovereign’s situation, but Tushan Liusu might. We’ll spare her life and have her inquire about it.” She couldn’t ignore the matter of the Phoenix Sovereign, but she didn’t want to investigate the Demon Abyss herself. In this situation, she needed a pawn.

The sword intent flared and vanished. By the time Tushan Xiu Rong reacted, it had already embedded itself in her forehead. She was filled with regret. If she had known she would be so unlucky, she wouldn’t have gone to Zhen Yuan True Person’s place for tea, and she wouldn’t have gotten involved in this mess. She wondered if the elders back in Qingqiu could remove this sword intent from her body.

“She’s too stupid,” Feng Chiyue said, looking at Tushan Xiu Rong with disdain.

“We’ll find someone more intelligent next time,” Ming Jian Su said soothingly. Although everyone knew about the connection between Qingqiu and the Demon Realm, openly accusing them wasn’t exactly appropriate. Such boldness and disregard for consequences… something felt off. After reviewing the conversation, Ming Jian Su frowned and looked at Tushan Xiu Rong. “Do you believe I have a connection with that person from Qingqiu?”

Tushan Xiu Rong blinked, confused. “Don’t you?”

Ming Jian Su scoffed. “Countless demons have perished by my sword. This attempt to sow discord is laughable.”

“Perhaps it’s a scheme to use someone else’s hand to get rid of an enemy,” Feng Chiyue said casually. “The Qingqiu foxes are only superficially friendly. Tushan Liusu deliberately used this feather to push Tushan Xiu Rong towards us, hoping we would execute her under the pretense of upholding the Heavenly Court’s laws.” Many plays followed a similar plot.

Being stared at as if she were an idiot annoyed Tushan Xiu Rong. But she didn’t want to end up like the White Phase Star Monarch, so she suppressed her anger. “Don’t slander my Elder Sister,” she said, frowning.

“Your Elder Sister slandered my Elder Sister first!” Feng Chiyue retorted, her voice louder. How could Ming Jian Su possibly have any connection with that fallen fox? Tushan Liusu was truly shameless. She would burn all the fur off those Qingqiu foxes one day!

Ming Jian Su wrapped her arms around Feng Chiyue, worried she might flip the table in a fit of anger, wasting precious time. She looked at Tushan Xiu Rong coldly. “Please investigate the matter of the phoenix feather thoroughly, Fellow Daoist,” she said.

Tushan Xiu Rong hung her head, her voice weak. “Yes.” As soon as she left the Dharma Hall, she fled Dong’e Mountain at the fastest speed she could muster. The oppressive pressure gradually lifted, and the sword intent embedded in her body became bearable. She took out the Chaos Mirror, found a name seal, and asked coldly, “Didn’t you swear an oath that you had a deep connection with the East Abode Master?”

The reply came quickly, ink-black characters forming before her eyes: “A connection from a past life is still a connection, isn’t it?”

    Chapter 36 p2

In the Purple Empyrean Palace, the Heavenly Emperor was horrified when he heard about the fight between Ming Jian Su and the White Phase Star Monarch. He didn’t want either of them to be injured. He hurriedly sent a decree to Qingjun Palace, ordering Chu Yi to intervene.

Recently, Chu Yi had lost interest in the Celestial Feather Ministry’s affairs. After losing to Ying Cunxin in the Ethereal Spirit Realm, she couldn’t shake off the feeling that something was wrong. In the end, she could only attribute it to “luck,” since she knew Ying Cunxin’s true abilities better than anyone. But even though she had found an excuse, she couldn’t completely convince herself. She spent every day racking her brains, trying to figure out how to convince Ying Cunxin to fight her again. A few days ago, Ying Cunxin had agreed to another match, but the outcome hadn’t aligned with her expectations. She lost again.

Once could be a coincidence, but twice? Chu Yi felt a surge of frustration, but Ying Cunxin was becoming increasingly distant. Sometimes, she would send ten messages, and it would take Ying Cunxin two hours to reply with a single message. Normally, she wouldn’t bother, but Ying Cunxin’s replies, despite being late, were detailed and addressed every point she had raised. Perhaps she was just busy? Chu Yi wondered, thinking she should find an opportunity to visit the East Sea.

Before she could make any plans, the Heavenly Emperor’s decree arrived, ordering her to mediate between the East Abode Master and the White Phase Star Monarch. It had only been a few days. How had they ended up fighting? Chu Yi sighed heavily, resigned to her fate, and set off for Dong’e Mountain.

The White Phase Star Monarch might have arrived with aggressive fanfare, but in actual combat, he was like a leaky balloon, quickly losing his momentum. Ming Jian Su had never fought against one of the older Star Monarchs in the Heavenly Court and was unsure of their true strength. But after exchanging a few blows, she quickly gauged his abilities. As expected, most immortals in the Heavenly Court were all talk and no action.

While the White Phase Star Monarch’s attacks were lackluster, he possessed several defensive treasures: robes, talismans, and other artifacts. Not wanting to damage their spiritual essence, Ming Jian Su refrained from using her Heaven and Earth Convergence Sword Technique and patiently focused on depleting his magic power.

“That’s the Death Duel invitation!” Zhen Yuan True Person, worried for his friend, watched as the situation deteriorated. “Fellow Daoist Baiyang is about to lose,” he said, then, unable to contain himself any longer, he released a treasured pearl from his sleeve. He acted so quickly that Tushan Xiu Rong didn’t even have time to stop him.

Ming Jian Su had sensed the incoming attack from behind. Without turning her head, she directed Undefeated to intercept it. A blinding flash of sword light erupted, followed by a deafening boom. The treasure that Zhen Yuan True Person had painstakingly refined for hundreds of years was cleaved in two. The energy stored within it surged outwards, a portion of it striking Zhen Yuan True Person.

As treasures were connected to their owner’s mind and spirit, Zhen Yuan True Person spat out a mouthful of blood. Tushan Xiu Rong reacted quickly, pulling him aside. She looked up at the Death Duel invitation hovering in the air, her brow furrowed. After a moment, two characters, “Zhen Yuan,” appeared on the invitation. “Fellow Daoist, you were too impulsive,” she said disapprovingly.

Zhen Yuan True Person smiled bitterly but didn’t respond. A sense of danger washed over him. He froze, then looked down. The cloud he was standing on was engulfed in flames. The dancing flames, resembling red lotuses swaying in the wind, slowly climbed upwards. He remained calm, channeling his magic power downwards, but instead of extinguishing the flames, he only fueled them further. He didn’t feel any pain, but he could sense his magic power and lifespan slowly draining away as the flames burned.

“Fellow Daoist Zhen Yuan?” Tushan Xiu Rong exclaimed, her heart sinking as she saw his black hair turning white. After a moment of hesitation, she sighed, took out a phoenix feather, and brushed it against Zhen Yuan True Person’s body. The flames subsided. She didn’t say anything further, quickly concealing the feather in her sleeve.

“Fellow Daoist Xiu Rong…” Zhen Yuan True Person stared at her blankly.

“Don’t ask,” Tushan Xiu Rong said calmly. This phoenix feather had been given to her by Tushan Liusu and was connected to that person, as well as the East Abode Master. She wouldn’t have taken it out unless it was absolutely necessary to extinguish the Phoenix fire on Zhen Yuan True Person.

    In Dong’e Mountain.

Zhu Wan, oblivious to the thunderous roar outside, looked curiously at Feng Chiyue, who had jumped out of the hammock. “Where are you going, Immortal Monarch?” she asked.

Feng Chiyue raised an eyebrow, tilted her head, and smiled sweetly. “Someone isn’t listening. What do you think we should do?”

Her beautiful eyes flickered with a golden light. There was a smile on her lips, but her eyes were devoid of emotion, cold and chilling. Zhu Wan was startled. She bit her lip and said softly, “Kill them?” As soon as the words left her mouth, she mentally scolded herself. When had she been infected by Feng Chiyue’s ruthlessness?!

    Feng Chiyue strode out.

Ming Jian Su was the first to notice that Feng Chiyue had left Dong’e Mountain. She narrowed her eyes, her gaze fixed on the terrified White Phase Star Monarch. Her sword intent sliced through the air, shattering his defenses and shaking his protective treasures. The White Phase Star Monarch was running out of magic power to sustain his treasures. Seizing the opportunity, Ming Jian Su snatched them away, then directed her sword intent towards him, showing no mercy. Despair gripped the White Phase Star Monarch, and he regretted signing that Death Duel invitation. With the invitation in effect, even if he died, the Celestial Pivot Department wouldn’t intervene. He dodged a sword beam with difficulty, his mind racing. Something wasn’t right. Fellow Daoist Zhen Yuan had also attacked, so his name should be on the Death Duel invitation too. Why hadn’t he joined the fight yet? The White Phase Star Monarch channeled his remaining magic power and transformed into a wisp of mist. After the sword beam passed, he re-solidified his body, his figure wavering.

“Fellow Daoist Zhen Yuan, help me!” he cried out.

Ming Jian Su had already figured out that Zhen Yuan True Person was the one who had intervened earlier. Her expression remained cold, and she had been waiting for him to join the fight, but for some reason, he had remained motionless.

After the White Phase Star Monarch’s desperate plea, she decided not to wait any longer. She directed her two swords, one after the other, towards him. The White Phase Star Monarch tried to use his reality-shifting technique, but before he could fully shroud himself in shadows, the sword beams pierced through him. He was caught between reality and illusion, but the Heaven and Earth Convergence Sword Technique ignored all such transformations. With a loud bang, his head and limbs were severed, blood splattering through the air. Before they even hit the ground, his body crumbled into dust, scattered by the wind.

The entire fight, from the moment the White Phase Star Monarch arrived at Dong’e Mountain to his demise, hadn’t lasted long.

Chu Yi, arriving in a flash of sword light, didn’t even have time to utter the words “Spare him” before the White Phase Star Monarch was gone. Wait, there was still another name on the Death Duel invitation. All eyes, filled with various emotions—sharpness, killing intent, pity—turned towards Zhen Yuan True Person, whose face had drained of all color.

“You’re such a loyal friend,” Feng Chiyue said, looking at him nonchalantly. “Why didn’t you follow him to the death? Will you end your own life, or should my Elder Sister do the honors?”

Zhen Yuan True Person was drenched in cold sweat.

He was indeed close to the White Phase Star Monarch, and he had been willing to stand up for him, but he hadn’t expected to lose his own life over it. He had never imagined that the East Abode Master would be so ruthless! Even in a Death Duel, as long as both parties were willing to compromise, they could still erase the invitation.

Chu Yi glanced at Ming Jian Su, who had walked over to Feng Chiyue, her sword still in hand. She had initially wanted to try and persuade her, but then she realized that Ming Jian Su ultimately listened to Feng Chiyue. She shifted her gaze to Feng Chiyue. “Fellow Daoist Feng, for the sake of my… father, how about sparing his life?” She had initially wanted to say “for my sake,” but considering her history of conflicts with Feng Chiyue, Zhen Yuan True Person would be dead for sure if they acted based on her “sake”.

Feng Chiyue pointed at the Death Duel invitation.

With “Baiyang” gone, “Zhen Yuan” stood out starkly.

With the Death Duel invitation in effect, even the Heavenly Emperor himself couldn’t intervene, let alone his father.

This man had attacked her Elder Sister from behind, a more despicable and cowardly act than anything the White Phase Star Monarch had done. He deserved to die! Ignoring Chu Yi’s expression, Feng Chiyue stared at Zhen Yuan True Person, a flicker of fire dancing on the clouds.

“Fellow Daoist” Tushan Xiu Rong said suddenly, “may I have a word with you in private?”

Before Ming Jian Su could respond, Feng Chiyue glared at her. What connection did this fox have with her Elder Sister? Why did they have to speak in private? Wasn’t she worthy of hearing their conversation? Sensing Feng Chiyue’s irritation, Ming Jian Su gently squeezed her little finger, trying to appease her. “If you have something to say, say it here,” she said calmly.

Tushan Xiu Rong frowned slightly. After a moment of contemplation, she took out the phoenix feather and said, “A feather has fallen onto your sword, Fellow Daoist.”

Ming Jian Su’s eyelids twitched. She knew Tushan Xiu Rong was implying something more. Before Ming Jian Su could reach out, Feng Chiyue snatched the feather. Sensing her own Phoenix fire sealed within it, she smiled coldly. Where did this wild Phoenix come from? Did they think this shabby feather was worthy of becoming a tassel for her Elder Sister’s sword?!

“Fellow Daoist Zhen Yuan only acted out of impulse,” Tushan Xiu Rong continued. “How about showing him some mercy, Fellow Daoist Dong’e?”

Chu Yi nodded in agreement. “Yes, let’s strive for peace.”

Feng Chiyue glanced at Chu Yi sarcastically. “It’s quite surprising to hear such words coming from the Emperor’s daughter.”

    Chu Yi: “…”

Ming Jian Su pondered for a moment. “How much is Fellow Daoist Zhen Yuan’s life worth?”

Feng Chiyue stared at her incredulously, then yanked her hand away and stormed back towards the mountain.

Ming Jian Su froze, realizing that Feng Chiyue was angry. She didn’t hesitate. Putting away the Death Duel invitation, she immediately turned and followed.

“Junior Sister! Junior Sister!” she called out, but as she stepped into the Dharma Hall, a blast of fire roared towards her. She dodged frantically. She didn’t dare to draw her sword. By the time she reached Feng Chiyue, having dodged numerous fireballs, she was covered in soot, a rare sight of disarray. She brushed a flicker of flame from her robes and looked at Feng Chiyue, who was only showing her a stubborn back. “Junior Sister,” she called out softly, her voice gentle and coaxing.

    Feng Chiyue was furious.

She had wanted to tear Zhen Yuan limb from limb to avenge Ming Jian Su, but what had happened? The moment she saw the phoenix feather, Ming Jian Su’s soul had seemingly departed. She was ready to generously let him go! She knew it. Ming Jian Su was hopelessly devoted to Phoenixes. She probably wanted Dong’e Mountain to be overflowing with them! Hearing Ming Jian Su’s approaching footsteps, her anger flared even brighter. She grabbed a pillow and hurled it at Ming Jian Su.

Ming Jian Su dodged the pillow and seized the opportunity to grab Feng Chiyue’s wrist. She knelt before her and asked softly, “What’s wrong, Junior Sister?”

Feng Chiyue’s eyes were red-rimmed, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “Why don’t you go string your sword tassel? Isn’t one feather enough? Do you need to pluck more from Phoenix Mountain?”

“I don’t need feathers from other Phoenixes,” Ming Jian Su said quickly. “What are they compared to you, Junior Sister?”

Her words only fueled Feng Chiyue’s anger further. Tears welled up in her eyes. “I knew it! You’ve been coveting my true form, wanting to pluck my feathers all along. You tricked me into giving you my treasures, and now that you’ve got what you wanted, are you going to kick me out of Dong’e Mountain?”

    Chapter 36 p1

Money was truly a matter that could strain relationships. After much haggling with Chang Huai, Que Chen Yi finally managed to get her to reluctantly shave off a small fraction of the price. Chang Huai then inquired about the reason for needing so many new puppets. Since Bai Zi Feng was already hanging on the pillar for all of the Immortal Realm to see, there was no point in hiding it. Que Chen Yi recounted everything that had happened.

Chang Huai was stunned for a moment, then said, “Won’t Baiyang Immortal Abode have to pay for damages? They’re paying for new puppets. Why are you still being so stingy?”

Que Chen Yi: “…” Was Chang Huai’s focus a bit strange? “Be content,” she said. “If the Ministry Head were negotiating with you, would you dare to ask for such a high price?”

Chang Huai fell silent, conceding the point. The Immortal Realm was truly an unfortunate place. Back in the mortal realm, the artifacts she crafted were highly sought after and fetched a high price. How was it that ascending to a higher realm hadn’t improved her life but instead made it more difficult and miserable?

On the Chaos Mirror, the image of Bai Zi Feng hanging on the pillar spread like wildfire. There were no lengthy explanations, just a few lines emphasizing Bai Zi Feng’s arrogance, his disrespectful words towards the Celestial Feather Ministry, and his wanton destruction of the Ministry’s valuable property.

    — That Swan Goose is in a truly pitiful state.

    — If I remember correctly, he’s the direct disciple of the White Phase Star Monarch*, right? And the White Phase Star Monarch is very protective of his own…

    — Oh, this is going to be good.

At that moment, the White Phase Star Monarch* was playing chess with a fellow Daoist, discussing profound concepts and enjoying himself immensely. However, when an attendant hurried over and whispered a few words in his ear, his face immediately changed. With a sharp click, his chess piece landed on the board. He stood up abruptly and said to Zhen Yuan Zhenren(True person)*, the immortal he was playing with, “Apologies, fellow Daoist, but I have urgent matters to attend to.” Ignoring Zhen Yuan True Person’s reaction, he transformed into a streak of light and vanished.

Zhen Yuan True Person frowned and turned to the immortal sitting beside him, a beautiful woman with narrow, fox-like eyes, who was sipping tea with a faint smile. “Fellow Daoist Xiu Rong, do you know what’s happening with Fellow Daoist Baiyang?” he asked, puzzled. Although they were wandering immortals, they occasionally socialized with the White Phase Star Monarch. This was the first time they had seen him lose his composure like this.

“I don’t know,” Tushan Xiu Rong replied, taking out the Chaos Mirror. She glanced at it and her eyes widened in surprise. She pushed the mirror towards Zhen Yuan True Person. On the screen, a disheveled Swan Goose, covered in blood, was hanging from a pillar. Every now and then, bolts of lightning and sword intent struck his body, his appearance truly pitiful. Zhen Yuan True Person initially thought it was an execution by the Celestial Pivot Department, but upon closer inspection, he saw the words “Celestial Feather Ministry” and “Bai Zi Feng.” “Isn’t this Fellow Daoist Baiyang’s direct disciple?” he exclaimed. He stood up abruptly and paced back and forth. “So Fellow Daoist Baiyang is going to seek justice for his disciple? Is he heading to Dong’e Mountain?”

“Probably,” Tushan Xiu Rong said casually.

Seeing her nonchalant attitude, Zhen Yuan True Person grew anxious. He snatched her teacup away. “We need to stop Fellow Daoist Baiyang! We can’t let him cause any trouble.” Fellow Daoist Baiyang had achieved enlightenment a thousand years ago and looked down on those who had ascended hundreds of years after him, even powerful figures like Ming Jian Su and Ming Yu Heng, who had become generals in the Heavenly Emperor’s army. Knowing his indulgent nature towards his disciple, he would definitely retaliate. And the Celestial Feather Ministry, even if they had a reason, couldn’t they have resolved this matter privately? Why did they have to broadcast it on the Chaos Mirror, humiliating everyone involved?

Tushan Xiu Rong stood up leisurely. She had a good relationship with Zhen Yuan True Person and owed him a great debt of gratitude. As for the White Phase Star Monarch, he was just someone she occasionally discussed the Dao with. As a fox immortal from Qingqiu, she had avoided the Heavenly Court for many years. While she was still hesitating, Zhen Yuan True Person grabbed her sleeve and summoned a cloud, heading towards Kunlun Mountain.

The White Phase Star Monarch was three thousand years old, a Heavenly Immortal by birth. His position as a Star Monarch had been bestowed upon him by the previous Heavenly Emperor. After the war between the immortals and demons, many had perished. As time passed, he had risen from an insignificant immortal to become one of the “elders” of the Heavenly Court. Even the current Heavenly Emperor treated him with courtesy. He had always enjoyed a smooth and easy life. How could he tolerate such an insult? The Celestial Feather Ministry’s attack on Bai Zi Feng was a slap in his face, a blatant sign of disrespect! How could he not be enraged?

He summoned his sword. A faint, rainbow-colored aura enveloped him. As he activated his movement technique, the air around him crackled and tore, leaving behind a long trail of energy. His destination was the Celestial Feather Ministry, but upon reaching the outskirts of Kunlun Mountain, he realized he couldn’t enter. They had clearly activated their defensive formations. Rage burned within him, but he retained a sliver of rationality, choosing not to unleash his full power within Kunlun Mountain. Instead, he redirected his sword towards Dong’e Mountain!

He knew about the major reforms within the Celestial Feather Ministry, but it was none of his business. Yet they had chosen to provoke him.

    In Dong’e Mountain.

Ming Jian Su had just finished weaving a hammock from green vines.

She looked up towards the sky outside the mountain and said softly, “He’s here.”

Feng Chiyue nodded absentmindedly, then jumped into the hammock. She crossed her arms, two birds perched on her shoulders, a carefree smile on her face. The hammock swayed gently, the breeze tinkling the golden bells hanging from its edges, their sound clear and melodious.

Ming Jian Su gazed at Feng Chiyue, watching as sunlight streamed through the leaves and dappled her body like scattered gold. After a moment, she reached out and pointed above the hammock. A small, translucent lotus leaf, shimmering with a jade-like green, appeared, shielding Feng Chiyue’s face from the sun. “Wait for me,” she said. Seeing that Feng Chiyue was still playing with the small birds, she felt a pang of displeasure. She snorted and rested her hand on the hammock, her gaze fixed on Feng Chiyue. “Junior Sister, why are you ignoring me?”

Feng Chiyue sat up slightly and kissed the corner of Ming Jian Su’s lips. “Alright, come back soon,” she said with a smile.

Ming Jian Su’s eyes lit up, and she nodded vigorously. Although her junior sister spent her days playing with flowers, birds, and other small creatures, she still cared about her the most! She couldn’t keep her waiting. As she turned to leave, she glanced back at Feng Chiyue in the hammock. Of course, her attempt to exchange a meaningful look was met with indifference. Her longing gaze was completely ignored.

Outside the mountain, the White Phase Star Monarch had arrived.

His face was contorted with rage, and the sword in his hand radiated a murderous aura. Before he could attack Dong’e Mountain, a flying message shot towards him like a shooting star. He reached out and caught it. The message contained two words: “Death Duel.” Once a name seal was placed on a Death Duel invitation, it meant that the Heavenly Court and the Celestial Pivot Department wouldn’t intervene, regardless of the outcome.

The White Phase Star Monarch didn’t place his seal. He stared at Ming Jian Su, who was walking towards him, his voice cold. “You’ve gone too far, East Abode Master.”

“You can still turn back, Star Monarch,” Ming Jian Su said, her expression as cold and frosty as snow. “Your disciple failed to register on time, that’s one mistake. As a wandering immortal, he attacked the Finance Hall after failing to obtain his resources, that’s another mistake. Do you still intend to seek justice for him?”

“Wandering immortal?” The White Phase Star Monarch hissed through gritted teeth. His disciple, whose status was equivalent to a Ministry Head, second only to Star Monarchs and Assistant Monarchs, was considered a wandering immortal? “Who are you to determine my disciple’s status?”

“Then let him be reborn into a different clan next time.” The White Phase Star Monarch’s reaction was within Ming Jian Su’s expectations. She released two beams of sword light, then asked casually, her gaze fixed on him, “Why haven’t you placed your seal? If you’re too cowardly, then leave my Dong’e Mountain.”

Enraged by Ming Jian Su’s provocation, the White Phase Star Monarch roared, flicked his finger, and slammed his name seal onto the Death Duel invitation. “You arrogant child, I’ll teach you what true power—” Before he could finish his sentence, the sound of a sword cry cut him off. A torrent of sword energy surged towards him, accompanied by a violent tremor, like thunder and lightning sweeping across the sky. The White Phase Star Monarch’s expression turned serious. Abandoning his arrogant posturing, he channeled his magical power. His robe shimmered with a divine light, and his sword, imbued with the power of wind and thunder, clashed against the incoming sword energy.

By the time Zhen Yuan True Person and Tushan Xiu Rong arrived at Dong’e Mountain, the two were already engaged in a fierce battle. A defensive formation enveloped Dong’e Mountain, but the ground outside was shattered, crisscrossed with deep fissures. A powerful storm raged, its energy sweeping outwards like a raging tide. The scene was simultaneously broadcast on the Chaos Mirror, as there were other immortals residing nearby. They scrambled to contain the shockwaves that threatened their abodes while watching the deadly duel unfold.

    — Fellow Daoist, don’t stop recording! I’m heading to Dong’e Mountain right now!

    — I knew the White Phase Star Monarch wouldn’t back down.

    — Who do you think will win, fellow Daoists?

    Chapter 35

The Zhenyu Sword was of no use to the Danxue Mountain lineage. It was an unruly sword, having destroyed the Red Jade Cave in Chongxuan Mountain and potentially revealing the secret of the Red Agate if it had a second owner. After numerous discussions, they finally made a decision: to announce the auction of the Zhenyu Sword in three days.

To ensure widespread awareness of the auction, they hired several immortal officials to promote the connection between the Zhenyu Sword and the Suxin Sword Master on the Chaos Mirror, even emphasizing the sword’s contribution to the Suxin Sword Master’s victory over the Demon Lord.

This news sparked widespread discussion on the Chaos Mirror. Although the Heavenly Court forbade anyone from mentioning the Fall of the Phoenix, the Heavenly Emperor was pleased to see them praising the Suxin Sword Master’s heroic deed in slaying the Demon Lord, a victory for the entire Immortal Realm. He even gave the Danxue Mountain lineage a considerable show of support by attaching his name seal and leaving a comment: “A fine sword indeed.”

Under these circumstances, the immortals of the Immortal Realm were eager to participate in the auction. Even if they had no use for the sword themselves, they could pass it on to their descendants, or resell it for a profit. How could they not be tempted?

“Elder Sister, so many people are coveting our Zhenyu Sword,” Feng Chiyue said, frowning at the messages on the Chaos Mirror. She knelt on the bed, tossed the Chaos Mirror aside, and looked around for Ming Jian Su.

“We have plenty of Cinnabar Jade now. There’s no need to worry,” Ming Jian Su said. With her mountain’s treasury overflowing, she felt confident and secure.

“But why should we spend Cinnabar Jade on something that’s already ours?” Feng Chiyue retorted, stating matter-of-factly. She had already decided that the Zhenyu Sword belonged to them. When Ming Jian Su approached, she reached out and grabbed her, her gaze fixed on her. “One less sword means one less tool at our disposal. I haven’t even settled the score with them yet! How dare they ask us for Cinnabar Jade?”

“Should we go to Danxue Mountain and retrieve the Zhenyu Sword right now?” The more Feng Chiyue thought about it, the more she regretted not taking the sword from Chongxuan Mountain directly. She released Ming Jian Su and made a move to stand up, as if ready to storm Danxue Mountain. “Wait!” Ming Jian Su exclaimed, quickly wrapping her arms around Feng Chiyue’s waist and pulling her back into her embrace. The Danxue Mountain lineage was using the Zhenyu Sword as bait to find the culprit responsible for destroying the Red Agate. Going there now would be walking right into their trap. Unless she could silently eliminate all the immortals in Danxue Mountain, this plan wouldn’t work.

“Don’t worry, Junior Sister, I have a plan,” Ming Jian Su said, fabricating a reassuring lie to calm Feng Chiyue down.

“Really?” Feng Chiyue looked at her skeptically. She had realized by now that Ming Jian Su wasn’t omniscient. For instance, her brain seemed to short-circuit when faced with slightly complex formations. She wriggled against Ming Jian Su’s grip, which was as strong as iron clamps, and mumbled, “Let go of me.”

Ming Jian Su loosened her grip slightly but didn’t release Feng Chiyue from her embrace. She nuzzled against Feng Chiyue’s neck, inhaling her familiar scent, and sighed contentedly. In recent days, due to the Celestial Feather Ministry matters, they had been either busy comparing documents or traveling. They hadn’t had a proper moment to just hold each other. A tinge of regret mixed with Ming Jian Su’s satisfaction. But soon, that regret morphed into confusion. Her junior sister used to cling to her constantly, but now she wasn’t initiating any contact and was even pushing her away! The more she thought about it, the more uneasy she felt. Before Feng Chiyue could slip away, she turned her around so they were facing each other. “Junior Sister,” she said, frowning, “you—”

Feng Chiyue lowered her eyelids lazily. “What about me?”

Ming Jian Su: “…” How could she possibly say it out loud? She couldn’t bring herself to utter those words! After pondering for a moment, she cleared her throat. “Junior Sister, didn’t you want to cultivate with me?”

Feng Chiyue’s tone remained indifferent. “Mm.”

Ming Jian Su’s frown deepened. She reached out and gently tucked a stray strand of hair behind Feng Chiyue’s ear. After a moment of hesitation, she decided to just ask directly, “Why don’t you let me hug you anymore?”

Feng Chiyue: “?” Hadn’t they hugged enough during the day? When had she refused?

“You pushed me away just now.” Ming Jian Su raised her arm and rolled up her sleeve, revealing her snow-white skin. The faint marks from Feng Chiyue’s fingers had already vanished, leaving no “evidence.” She grabbed Feng Chiyue’s hand and pressed it against her arm, watching as a red mark appeared. “Like this,” she accused.

Feng Chiyue was speechless. She was exhausted from moving the Red Agate vein and had no energy to deal with Ming Jian Su’s inexplicable mood swings. After a few noncommittal grunts, she transformed into a round, fluffy bird and sent a mental message. “Hug me now.”

Ming Jian Su: “…” She took back what she had said earlier. While the bird form was adorable, it wasn’t as good as the human form.

Although immortals didn’t require sleep and could meditate endlessly, Ming Jian Su had adopted Feng Chiyue’s habits since ascending to the Immortal Realm, choosing sleep over long nights of cultivation. When she woke up, the sky was already bright. The fluffy ball of feathers had transformed back into her human form at some point, half-lying on Ming Jian Su’s arm, sound asleep.

Ming Jian Su gazed at Feng Chiyue. With her red lips and black hair, she was breathtakingly beautiful, even in her sleep. Ming Jian Su leaned in closer, but just as the distance between them was about to vanish, Feng Chiyue suddenly opened her eyes. Her eyes were a brilliant gold, shimmering with a divine light, but they quickly returned to their usual black, now tinged with a sleepy laziness.

“Elder Sister,” Feng Chiyue murmured, her voice softer than usual, sounding like a seductive whisper to Ming Jian Su’s ears. Caught trying to steal a kiss, Ming Jian Su felt a brief pang of embarrassment, but it was quickly swept away by Feng Chiyue’s smile. After pulling back slightly, she leaned in again, her lips seeking Feng Chiyue’s. When she had fled to Asura City, she had found the constant nights of passion tiring. But it wasn’t just her junior sister who was indulging. She herself had developed a taste for it.

Sunlight streamed through the window, casting dancing shadows on their bodies, like ripples on water.

Ming Jian Su’s lips brushed against Feng Chiyue’s brow, her eyelids, her cheeks, and finally settled on her warm lips.

Feng Chiyue closed her eyes, her long eyelashes casting delicate shadows on her cheeks.

After a long while, Ming Jian Su’s breathing calmed. She gently adjusted Feng Chiyue’s disheveled robes.

Feng Chiyue opened her eyes and looked at her. “Should we become wandering immortals?” she asked after a moment. That way, they could enjoy boundless freedom every day, without the constraints of “time flying by too quickly during passionate nights.”

Ming Jian Su sighed. “But immortals have eternal lifespans, and Cinnabar Jade is finite.” She didn’t mind a simple life, but her junior sister was a Phoenix. She deserved to live in a magnificent palace, adorned with jade and precious stones, and feast on delicacies and celestial nectar. She couldn’t let her suffer! Oh, and she also had to eliminate those troublesome birds from Danxue Mountain. Becoming a wandering immortal would make things more difficult.

Feng Chiyue nibbled on Ming Jian Su’s neck, feeling both frustrated and determined to find a way to obtain endless Cinnabar Jade.

After cuddling with Feng Chiyue for a while, Ming Jian Su finally got up. She retrieved the Chaos Mirror that Feng Chiyue had discarded and checked the messages from Que Chen Yi. Following the Barbarian and Great Wind Clan incidents, many Feather Clans had resubmitted their clan information, but the deadline had already passed. When the Celestial Feather Ministry updated the registry, they stripped those who had missed the deadline of their official positions and candidacy statuses. They wanted freedom from rules and regulations? Fine, let them be carefree wandering immortals. They wouldn’t receive a single Cinnabar Jade from the Ministry in the future.

“The numbers still don’t add up, right? Should we visit other Feather Clans?” Feng Chiyue asked, sitting in a chair opposite Ming Jian Su, idly fiddling with the melodious bell hanging from her waist.

“Do you want to go out?” Ming Jian Su asked.

Feng Chiyue slumped back in her chair. “No.”

Ming Jian Su, respecting Feng Chiyue’s decision, nodded. “Then let’s issue them an ultimatum.” With the Celestial Feather Career Book in hand, no Feather Clan could hide anything from her. Instead of sending Undefeated or Eternal Sword to intimidate them, she simply compiled a list of all the missing names from each clan and gave them three days to report. Those who failed to comply would be considered “deceased.” This meant that anyone seeking revenge wouldn’t have to worry about the Celestial Pivot Department’s intervention. After all, if someone was “dead,” who cared about what happened to them afterwards?

The various Feather Clan factions were cunning and had initially planned to deny everything, but upon seeing the complete list, they were speechless. Some were even unaware of certain members. How did the Celestial Feather Ministry know everything? Had the previous Ministry officials left behind a secret registry? Or was there another method?

It wasn’t just those ordinary Feather Clans. Even the Vermilion Birds, Swan Gooses, and other powerful factions in Danxue Mountain were stunned by the announcement. They initially suspected that the Celestial Mother had bestowed some powerful artifact, but then they realized that the Heavenly Court didn’t possess any artifacts capable of such feats. Since its establishment, the population records of the Feather Clan had always been a mess. Rectifying them would be a monumental task, one that might take a century to complete, yet Feng Chiyue had accomplished it.

They had been struggling to deal with the Red Agate incident, and now, faced with the Celestial Feather Ministry’s actions, a dark cloud descended upon Danxue Mountain.

Chang Li, the South Vermilion Lord, usually didn’t interfere in the affairs of the Danxue Mountain lineage. As long as the clan elders didn’t seek her out, she wouldn’t intervene. However, this time, witnessing the Ministry’s movements, she sent a message through one of her attendants.

    The Celestial Feather Career Book!

This supreme treasure, forgotten by many after the Phoenix Sovereign’s fall, had suddenly crashed into their lives like a meteor.

They had been striving to become the rulers of the Feather Clan.

But if the one who possessed the Celestial Feather Career Book appeared, what did that make them?

“Could it be that the Phoenixes hid the Career Book and gave it to Feng Chiyue?” the Swan Goose Elder speculated. The Phoenixes weren’t so much suppressed by them as by the Heavenly Emperor. After all, the Heavenly Emperor was among those who feared the Phoenixes’ revenge. When the Phoenixes were at their weakest, the Career Book in their possession would have been a liability. But now that Feng Chiyue was in charge of the Celestial Feather Ministry, she could put the treasure to good use. Rectifying the Feather Clan registry would have a massive impact on Danxue Mountain, signifying the end of their control over the “unregistered laborers.”

“It’s possible,” the Vermilion Bird Elder sneered, his voice cold. “Phoenix Mountain pushed Feng Chiyue forward, using Ming Jian Su’s influence to reap the benefits.”

“One of our promising young talents is also on the list published by the Ministry,” the Swan Goose Elder said, stroking his beard, a glint in his eyes. There were many Star Monarchs in the Heavenly Court whose status was equivalent to the heads of the three major departments, but they typically secluded themselves in their immortal abodes and rarely dealt with worldly affairs. One of their Swan Goose clan members, Bai Zi Feng, had been favored by the reclusive White Phase Star Monarch and taken as a direct disciple. His status was considered equal to that of a Ministry Head. When the Celestial Feather Ministry announced the registry rectification, Bai Zi Feng hadn’t paid any attention to it, not even bothering to send an attendant to inquire. Now, seeing his name on the Ministry’s public announcement, he was probably feeling quite indignant.

Bai Zi Feng was indeed indignant, but not because his name had been made public. It was because when he sent his attendant to the Finance Hall of the Celestial Feather Ministry to collect his resources, the attendant was turned away and told that, as a wandering immortal, he wasn’t eligible to receive Cinnabar Jade, elixirs, or other benefits. Without a document issued by the Ministry and without a close relationship with the person in charge, the Heavenly Prosperity Department wouldn’t allocate any cultivation resources to him.

“This is outrageous! My master is a Star Monarch, and my status is equivalent to a Ministry Head. How am I considered a wandering immortal?” Bai Zi Feng was furious. He sent his attendant back with a personal letter, but the result was the same. His attendant returned empty-handed, his face etched with despair.

How could Bai Zi Feng tolerate such an insult? With a cold laugh, he transformed into a streak of light and flew towards the Celestial Feather Ministry.

    In the Dharma Hall.

After a busy period, Que Chen Yi finally had a moment to relax. She brewed herself a cup of spiritual tea and, with a happy sigh, took out the Chaos Mirror, intending to watch a play. But before she could choose one, the entire hall shook violently, tea splashing from her cup. Que Chen Yi frowned, cursed under her breath, and strode out. Following the commotion, she arrived at the Finance Hall.

The timid officials huddled together in a corner, while the puppets that had been serving in the Finance Hall were scattered across the floor in pieces. Que Chen Yi’s eyes narrowed. She saw a cultivator, dressed in a gray-white Daoist robe and wearing a tall hat, standing in the center of the hall, looking down at them with contempt and murderous intent.

Knowing she was no match for this person, she discreetly sent a message to Ming Jian Su. Then, adjusting her sleeves and adopting the demeanor of the Assistant Ministry Head, she asked sternly, “Why are you causing trouble in the Celestial Feather Ministry, Master?”

“Trouble?” Bai Zi Feng scoffed. “The Finance Hall of the Celestial Feather Ministry has withheld my cultivation resources. How dare you accuse me of ‘causing trouble’?”

He was probably one of those who had been stripped of their official status for failing to register on time. There were many like him, but the others hadn’t come knocking. The fact that he was here meant that he had a powerful backer, at least a Star Monarch. Que Chen Yi, calculating her options, forced a smile. “May I ask your name, Master?”

Bai Zi Feng replied arrogantly, “Bai Zi Feng, direct disciple of the White Phase Star Monarch of Baiyang Immortal Abode.”

Que Chen Yi remembered the name. Estimating that Ming Jian Su and Feng Chiyue would arrive soon, she dispensed with the pleasantries. “Our Ministry Head has stated that the deadline for registration has passed. If you wish to obtain an official position, you’ll have to wait for the upcoming examination.”

“Ministry Head?” Bai Zi Feng said dismissively. “Who does Feng Chiyue think she is? What right does she have to determine the status and fate of the Feather Clan?” He had heard all about Feng Chiyue, but with a Star Monarch as his backer, he had no qualms about speaking his mind, his arrogance on full display.

Que Chen Yi was initially angered, then a flicker of pity appeared in her eyes. This young man had clearly never learned the meaning of “disaster emanating from the mouth.” It seemed this generation of the Feather Clan was truly lacking in education. Well, that was probably why she had been chosen to be the Assistant Ministry Head. While Bai Zi Feng continued to rant, she discreetly took a few steps back. The already terrified officials were now shaking like leaves.

The sword, radiating a brilliant light, descended in a flash.

By the time Bai Zi Feng sensed the danger, the sword had pierced through his chest, pinning him to the stone steps. Blood streamed from the gaping wound, staining the steps crimson. While the injury wouldn’t be fatal, as he struggled to get up, a foot pressed down on his back, heavy as a mountain, forcing him back down. His head slammed against the stone steps with a sickening thud.

Bai Zi Feng’s ears rang, and his vision blurred. He struggled to regain his senses, channeling his magic power to break free from the restraint. But his magic was instantly suppressed, surging chaotically through his meridians, forcing him to vomit blood. “Y-You…” He choked out a few broken words, which were swept away by the wind and drowned out by the sound of his head repeatedly hitting the stone. Ming Jian Su, standing on his back, had grabbed his hair and was smashing his head against the ground. The hard stone steps started to crack. Bai Zi Feng’s nose broke, his teeth scattered, and his face became a bloody mess.

“Why don’t you continue? Don’t you like talking?” Ming Jian Su asked calmly, her voice laced with a chilling killing intent. The entire Celestial Feather Ministry fell silent. No one dared to intervene. After receiving Que Chen Yi’s message, a wave of anger had surged through Ming Jian Su. Even when she was present, someone had dared to be so insolent, causing trouble in the Celestial Feather Ministry. How had they treated her junior sister when she wasn’t around? Couldn’t they just behave themselves? Why did they have to constantly create problems? She was already exhausted! Couldn’t these immortals be a bit more sensible?

Feng Chiyue had arrived with Ming Jian Su. She stood nearby, her arms crossed, watching Bai Zi Feng get beaten with amusement.

Although Bai Zi Feng couldn’t fight back, he could still scream. However, his cries gradually weakened, becoming as thin and fragile as a thread in the wind.

“M-Ministry Head?” Que Chen Yi, her legs trembling, approached Feng Chiyue. She had never seen Ming Jian Su fight before. Her impression of her was mostly pieced together from descriptions on the Chaos Mirror. No wonder no one had dared to bully Feng Chiyue. Ming Jian Su might appear ethereal and otherworldly, but her temper was a hundred times more explosive than Feng Chiyue’s. “He’s the direct disciple of the White Phase Star Monarch,” she reminded her cautiously.

“My Elder Sister is just disciplining a dog. Is there a problem with that?” Feng Chiyue retorted. She had beaten Jing De Immortal Monarch, and the Minister of Heavenly Salaries hadn’t said a word.

Que Chen Yi: “…” These two would probably cheer each other on regardless of what they did.

Feng Chiyue turned to Ming Jian Su. “Elder Sister, he broke our puppets. He needs to be kept alive to pay for them.” Glancing at the bloodstains on the ground with disgust, she cast a cleaning spell, brushing it over Ming Jian Su. Still not satisfied, she took out a handkerchief and carefully wiped Ming Jian Su’s hands, which were stained with Bai Zi Feng’s blood.

“Let’s be a bit more civilized next time,” she muttered. The sight of blood was rather distasteful.

Que Chen Yi looked at Feng Chiyue in surprise, thinking she was finally considering the consequences of their actions. But before a relieved smile could form on her face, Ming Jian Su’s reply stunned her.

“Alright, I’ll listen to you. Next time, I’ll just kill them outright.”

Que Chen Yi: “…” Did they really consider that “civilized”?

After cleaning Ming Jian Su’s hands, Feng Chiyue’s disgust towards Bai Zi Feng intensified. With a flick of her sleeve, a one-foot-tall pillar appeared on the ground. Channeling her magic power into it, she made it grow to ten feet tall. The pillar, forged from unknown materials, radiated a fierce and ominous aura, with sword intent and lightning crackling around its surface. Feng Chiyue pointed at Bai Zi Feng and instructed Que Chen Yi, “Hang this Swan Goose on the pillar. Make an example of him to deter others.”

“Then upload the scene onto the Chaos Mirror, so those dimwitted fools can learn their lesson.”

Que Chen Yi remained silent. Ming Jian Su’s sharp gaze swept over her, sending a shiver down her spine. “Yes, Ministry Head,” she said immediately. There might have been a chance to resolve this matter privately, but now that they were hanging Bai Zi Feng and broadcasting it for everyone to see, they were essentially spitting in the White Phase Star Monarch’s face. There was no room for reconciliation.

Ming Jian Su, holding Feng Chiyue’s hand, spoke casually, as if no one else was present. “The White Phase Star Monarch cares about his reputation. He’ll definitely come seeking revenge for his disciple. He’s also one of the bidders for the Zhenyu Sword. I’ll beat him half to death and casually mention the sword. When the auction starts, I’ll open with one Cinnabar Jade. Any other Star Monarch who wants to compete with me better think twice.”

Feng Chiyue smiled brightly. “Thank you for your hard work, Elder Sister.”

Que Chen Yi, with trembling hands, hung Bai Zi Feng on the pillar. Distracted for a moment, she was struck by a bolt of lightning, several strands of her hair standing on end. When she looked back, she only saw Ming Jian Su and Feng Chiyue walking away, their figures receding into the distance. A wave of resentment washed over her. Who was actually doing the hard work here? With these two together, it was double the disregard for others’ lives! Then, thinking of the massive amount of Cinnabar Jade, her resentment faded. She instructed the timid officials to clean up the mess, then took out the Chaos Mirror and contacted Chang Huai.

Several puppets had been destroyed, and she needed replacements.

“Fellow Daoist Chang Huai, did you cut corners when making these puppets? Why did they break so easily?” Que Chen Yi sent a picture of the broken puppet parts to Chang Huai, hoping to bargain for a lower price.

Chang Huai: “…” She made puppets for chores, not for combat. If they wanted sturdier puppets, sure, but that would cost extra.

  • The Number One Good-for-Nothing in the Celestial Realm 34

    Chapter 34

The “live broadcast” from the Great Wind Clan on the Chaos Mirror abruptly cut off, throwing Danxue Mountain into a frenzy. They had no idea what Da Feng Li had said, so they could only assume the worst. They immediately contacted the guards stationed at their various mines, instructing them to be extra vigilant, while also keeping a close eye on Dong’e Mountain. When Feng Chiyue and Ming Jian Su didn’t return for a long time, the immortals of Danxue Mountain grew increasingly uneasy.

“We don’t know where they’ll investigate next. Perhaps we should proactively expose one of our mines?” Not all mines were equal. For instance, the Red Jade Cave in Chongxuan Mountain was of paramount importance and absolutely couldn’t be discovered by Ming Jian Su and Feng Chiyue.

“How could they possibly find it just by searching?” someone objected.

“But don’t you think Feng Chiyue is a bit too lucky? Besides, the Phoenixes know about some of our mines. They might tell her. In that case, it’s better to offer up a mine ourselves.”

“They’re investigating people, not mountains. Some of those mountains rightfully belong to us. So what if she finds out? As for the workers, we can simply compensate their clans for their losses.”

“But will we still be able to find laborers to mine for us in the future?”

“Do they really know about every single Feather Clan member? If she knows about the Great Wind Clan, we’ll just hand over those two. But first, we need to transfer them to one of the less important mines.”

“We can always register them with the Celestial Feather Ministry later. Let’s just appease them for now.”

    In the Celestial Feather Ministry.

Que Chen Yi, in her Dust-Rejecting Clothes, had been diligently working and was rewarded with a promotion. She replaced Bi Feng, who had vanished without a trace, jumping from an obscure clerk position to the role of Assistant Ministry Head, becoming the second most authoritative figure in the Ministry. When she heard that immortals from Danxue Mountain had arrived, she assumed they were here to cause trouble while Feng Chiyue and Ming Jian Su were away. To her surprise, they produced a register with utmost sincerity. Que Chen Yi glanced at it. It was a roster of names, including Da Feng Zhi and Da Feng Ting, who hadn’t been registered, as well as unregistered Feather Clan immortals from other factions.

The Vermilion Bird chuckled. “They came to Danxue Mountain themselves to sign up for crystal mining. We assumed they were already registered with the Ministry. Imagine our surprise when we realized they weren’t. You and Ministry Head Feng have gone through so much trouble for them.”

Que Chen Yi didn’t believe a word of it. It wasn’t just large factions like the Vermilion Bird. Even smaller factions would keep “unregistered laborers” in their private mines to reduce costs. As for “not knowing,” who were they trying to fool? But understanding was one thing. She wouldn’t use her insignificant position to challenge a behemoth like the Danxue Mountain lineage.

She handed the register to a puppet standing nearby, instructing it to transcribe the data, then smiled politely at the Vermilion Bird immortal. “These mountains haven’t been registered before, have they? According to the regulations, the Ministry is entitled to a one percent tax. When can we expect you to pay that, fellow Daoist?”

This was one of the main reasons why some large factions concealed their private assets. Once they were disclosed, they would have to pay taxes to the Heavenly Court. They could get away with fudging the numbers when dealing with the Four Seas, but the Feather Clan was different. After that great upheaval, the Danxue Mountain lineage was tied to the Heavenly Court and couldn’t act independently like the Four Seas or the Qingqiu Kingdom.

Since the Vermilion Bird had already decided to sacrifice some “small profits,” they wouldn’t give them any excuse to find fault. The mines they had chosen were relatively resource-poor and had already been mostly depleted. They wouldn’t be able to extract much more in the future. He looked at Que Chen Yi for a moment, then said with a sigh, “Assistant Ministry Head Que is truly dedicated to her duty.” He took out several Qiankun bags and tossed them onto the table, then raised his chin. “Please do the honors of counting them, Assistant Ministry Head.”

Que Chen Yi smiled. She didn’t summon any officials or clerks. Instead, with a flick of her sleeve, she produced another faceless puppet. These puppets were much more efficient than those lazy and indolent officials. Although commissioning Chang Huai to create these puppets had almost wiped out her savings, Feng Chiyue had said that she could receive multiple salaries for doing multiple jobs. It wouldn’t be long before she recouped her investment.

The Vermilion Bird’s gaze turned frosty. A small Silver-Tailed Tit dared to show off in front of a Vermilion Bird? She was only relying on Feng Chiyue’s backing. Once Feng Chiyue fell, she would see how long her arrogance lasted. He snorted coldly, then turned and left. Que Chen Yi didn’t bother seeing him off. She took out the Chaos Mirror and sent a message to Feng Chiyue.

“The Vermilion Bird lineage has reported some hidden ‘unregistered laborers’ and exposed a few private mines.” Ming Jian Su, holding Feng Chiyue’s Chaos Mirror, pondered silently. The Danxue Mountain lineage was taking a step back, hoping to resolve the matter peacefully? Were they using those mines as a distraction to cover up something more sinister?

Feng Chiyue, now a small bird, couldn’t be bothered to speak. She chirped twice, emphasizing the words “mine, mine” before curling into a ball and ignoring Ming Jian Su.

Ming Jian Su nodded. “I know.” Although Feng Chiyue had pecked her numerous times, leaving red marks on the back of her hand, she still couldn’t resist picking her up and petting her. She realized now that there was a silver lining to Feng Chiyue’s vanity. At least she would rather transform into a beautiful bird than an ugly human.

Feng Chiyue’s eyes glazed over. She had given up on resisting Ming Jian Su. The outcome was always the same anyway. She nestled in Ming Jian Su’s hand, occasionally rubbing her head against her fingers. Ming Jian Su’s smile deepened. “Since the Danxue Mountain lineage has shown such goodwill,” she said after a moment, “we should respond in kind.” She channeled her consciousness into the Chaos Mirror and, using her memories, created an illusion of herself and Feng Chiyue touring scenic mountains and rivers, which she then released into the Chaos Mirror.

Why wasn’t she in Dong’e Mountain? Because she was traveling with her junior sister, of course.

The Vermilion Birds, who had been closely monitoring Ming Jian Su and Feng Chiyue’s movements, remained vigilant. What if this was just a smokescreen? Mountains and rivers were often treasure troves. Who knew what they might “accidentally” stumble upon? However, for several days after the incident with the Great Wind Clan, Ming Jian Su and Feng Chiyue were nowhere to be seen within the territories controlled by the Vermilion Bird’s allies. The only evidence of their existence was the stream of scenic images appearing on the Chaos Mirror.

Some disgruntled immortal officials complained to the Heavenly Emperor, accusing Ming Jian Su of neglecting her duties and abusing her power. However, before the Heavenly Emperor could respond, Ming Yu Heng intervened, saying, “The East Abode Master has served the Heavenly Court diligently for many years. It’s only natural for her to take a vacation.”

The Heavenly Emperor readily agreed. Previously, he had been forced to distance himself from the Celestial Mother for political reasons, but deep down, he didn’t want any upheavals in the Heavenly Court. If Ming Jian Su and Feng Chiyue could stay out of trouble for eight hundred years, that would be ideal. At least the Celestial Feather Ministry could remain as it was, and he wouldn’t have all sorts of birds chirping and squawking in his ears.

As the rumors and speculations swirled, Feng Chiyue and Ming Jian Su, still indulging in their scenic tour, arrived twenty miles outside of Chongxuan Mountain.

Twilight approached. Ahead of them lay a frosty forest shrouded in mist, resembling a white ribbon stretched across the landscape. The hazy mist drifted outwards, merging with the distant mountains. The towering peaks, like jade shoots emerging from the clouds, appeared serene and desolate.

“There’s a formation,” Ming Jian Su said, stopping in her tracks. She had sensed a shift in the earth’s energy. The Red Jade Cave was hidden within the mountain, and concealing its presence wouldn’t be easy. The formation here was vast. Forcing it open would affect a radius of a hundred miles and alert the Danxue Mountain lineage. However, she wasn’t skilled in deciphering formations. She could only rely on brute force to break through. “Junior Sister?” Ming Jian Su lifted her veil and glanced at Feng Chiyue, who was perched on her shoulder.

Feng Chiyue: “…” She pecked Ming Jian Su and sent her a lazy message. “Can you shatter the formation with one sword strike and kill everything inside?”

Ming Jian Su hesitated for a moment, her tone uncertain. “That might harm innocent beings. Besides, Red Agate is precious and fragile. It might be destroyed by your sword.” Seeing that Feng Chiyue remained silent, she added awkwardly, “Let me think of another way.”

Feng Chiyue puffed up with anger. “Are you planning to start learning formations right now?” She had thought she wouldn’t have to worry about anything with her Elder Sister around! After a moment of internal debate, she said, “You’ll have to compensate me after this.”

Ming Jian Su was already accustomed to Feng Chiyue’s way of speaking and readily agreed. “Compensation” was just a word. She would do it regardless. Satisfied with Ming Jian Su’s promise, Feng Chiyue settled down. She hopped from Ming Jian Su’s shoulder to her arms and snuggled against her, continuing their conversation through mental messages.

This formation was based on the mountain’s natural energy flow, self-contained and harmonized with the surrounding environment. To break it, she would need to shatter the entire formation in one go. A small breach would simply repair itself as the energy flow adjusted. While formations like this were resilient, they also had a small flaw: their inclusiveness made them complex. Anyone who could match their energy rhythm to the formation would be considered a part of it, free to enter and exit at will.

Ming Jian Su’s comprehension was exceptional. Although her understanding of formations wasn’t that advanced, she didn’t need to start from scratch. Listening to Feng Chiyue’s lazy instructions, she quickly integrated herself into the formation and stepped into the frosty forest.

    Within Chongxuan Mountain.

Despite the transfer of some Feather Clan members due to the Celestial Feather Ministry’s investigation, the mountain wasn’t deserted. The sound of hammering echoed from within the mountain, punctuated by curses.

“They transferred some workers, but the quota for Red Agate hasn’t decreased.”

“Damn those immortals! They spend their days lounging in the Heavenly Court, clueless about the difficulty of mining Red Agate. Do they think it’s tofu? Easy to just dig up?”

“There’s a strange energy in the mountain. Several people have been injured already. The records I’ve read about Red Agate didn’t mention anything like this.”

“Who knows? Maybe the methods changed when the ownership changed?”

“Did I ascend to this realm just to slave away in a mine for someone else?”

Apart from the Feather Clan Heavenly Immortals “offered” by various factions, there were also Human Immortals who had ascended to the upper realm, as well as other beings who had cultivated into human forms. Once they were brought to the mines and became “unregistered laborers,” there were only two possible outcomes: death or continued servitude.

Ming Jian Su didn’t pay much attention to these “unregistered laborers.” She infiltrated Chongxuan Mountain, found a secluded spot, and started pondering how to transport the entire Red Agate vein back to Dong’e Mountain. “If only there were a mine spirit,” she muttered. If the Red Agate vein had birthed a sentient being, she could simply capture it, and taking it would be equivalent to taking the entire vein. But if there really were a mine spirit, would the Danxue Mountain lineage need to go through all this trouble to mine it?

Feng Chiyue didn’t respond. She wiggled out of Ming Jian Su’s arms and flew to the rock wall, looking at her expectantly.

Ming Jian Su knew what she meant. She channeled her sword intent, slicing away a large chunk of rock. Fiery red crystals, radiating a dazzling light, were revealed. Feng Chiyue hopped closer to the Red Agate and pecked at it a few times. The pure energy within the crystal was absorbed into her body, leaving behind only crumbling dust. Feng Chiyue narrowed her eyes and sighed contentedly. “Mine.”

Ming Jian Su nodded, her gaze sweeping over their surroundings. Chongxuan Mountain belonged to the Vermilion Bird lineage, but the Red Jade Cave had been transferred from Danxue Mountain. In any case, it didn’t belong to them. If they wanted to take the Red Agate without being discovered, they might have to resort to killing everyone involved. As this thought crossed her mind, a glint of murderous intent flashed in Ming Jian Su’s eyes. She had fought her way to where she was. Killing wasn’t a burden to her. “Do you have a way to take the Red Agate, Junior Sister?” she asked.

    Feng Chiyue nodded.

With a surge of primal energy, she transformed back into her human form and pressed her hand against the wall where the Red Agate had been exposed. A faint red glow emanated from her palm, growing increasingly brighter and more dazzling.

Ming Jian Su’s eyelids twitched, and a sense of foreboding washed over her. “This isn’t good,” she thought. The ground trembled violently, the entire mountain shaking. She extended her divine sense and saw countless red lines of energy converging towards Feng Chiyue’s palm like rivers flowing into the sea. The primal energy fluctuated wildly, sending out ripples as chaotic power surged outwards, shattering the mountain and creating an earth-shattering roar. However, the formation encompassing Chongxuan Mountain contained the energy, preventing it from spreading further.

Ming Jian Su: “…” So she did have a way. A world-shaking, earth-shattering way, completely different from the discreet plan she had in mind.

As the mountain shook violently, rocks and debris rained down. The immortals mining Red Agate in the cave lost their footing. Ignoring their supervisor’s shouts, they scrambled out of the mine. The officials in the nearby pavilion were also alerted and rushed out, confused and enraged.

As long as those officials from the Danxue Mountain lineage weren’t completely incompetent, they would eventually discover what had happened here.

Ming Jian Su drew her sword, prepared to fight. Suddenly, a blinding light erupted from the heart of Chongxuan Mountain. A sharp sword cry pierced the air, almost drowning out the thunderous rumbling of the collapsing mountain.

“Stop it,” Ming Jian Su said, assuming it was Undefeated and Eternal Sword causing trouble. But as soon as the words left her lips, she realized something was wrong. She focused a sliver of her consciousness towards the source of the commotion and saw countless sword beams shooting towards the sky, brilliant and dazzling like stars scattered across the heavens. The commotion from their side was completely overshadowed.

There was a divine sword of unparalleled power over there.

Ming Jian Su’s heart raced with excitement. Unable to resist, she tore her gaze away from Feng Chiyue and took another look.

“This mountain is ours, the Red Agate is yours, and that sword is mine, right?” she murmured.

Feng Chiyue agreed readily. “Yes.” When the last traces of red light faded, she removed her hand from the wall. Like Ming Jian Su, her gaze was fixated on the sword.

The sword radiated a brilliant and dazzling light, as if forged from the most precious treasures in the world. Its sharp and powerful sword intent swept through its surroundings, instantly shattering the formation encompassing Chongxuan Mountain. The energy that had been suppressed within the mountain surged outwards like a flood, unleashing a tempest of wind and lightning, turning the heavens and earth upside down.

The officials from the Danxue Mountain lineage assumed that the sword was responsible for everything happening in the mountain. They were currently leading their forces in a desperate struggle against its sword intent. The timing of this sword’s appearance was perfect. With it as a distraction, no one would suspect them of taking the Red Agate. Compared to a sword… her junior sister’s Red Agate was far more important. Ming Jian Su tore her gaze away from the sword with reluctance, her mind made up. “Let’s go,” she said, grabbing Feng Chiyue and flying out of the mountain.

    “But that sword—”

    “It doesn’t matter.”

When the Vermilion Bird elders from Danxue Mountain arrived, Chongxuan Mountain was in ruins. Amidst the devastation, there was no sign of the Red Agate. As for the “culprit,” they eventually subdued it, binding it with special chains and sealing it within a stone casket after casting numerous spells on it.

The Vermilion Bird elders were furious. How could a sword suddenly appear in Chongxuan Mountain? They had been so focused on guarding against Feng Chiyue that they hadn’t considered the possibility of trouble arising from within the mountain itself.

The officials, their bodies covered in wounds inflicted by the sword intent, were in a sorry state. They couldn’t even stop the bleeding. They prostrated themselves on the ground and reported fearfully, “There’s an inscription on the sword: ‘Zhenyu.’” They had never heard of this sword before.

There had been no such sword in Chongxuan Mountain before. They hadn’t seen it when they transferred the Red Agate vein. How did it appear? When did it appear? If it had been born from the world’s spiritual energy, there would have been signs. But it had remained dormant for so many years, suggesting it was placed there by someone.

The sword that terrified the Vermilion Birds also captivated Ming Jian Su.

Even after returning to Dong’e Mountain and secretly planting the Red Agate in her own mountain, Ming Jian Su couldn’t get that fleeting glimpse out of her mind.

She glanced at Undefeated and Eternal Sword, then turned to Feng Chiyue. “Junior Sister, don’t you think my sword collection is a bit lacking?”

Feng Chiyue narrowed her eyes. She had already been persuaded by Ming Jian Su. Ignoring Undefeated and Eternal Sword’s protests, she nodded seriously. “Yes.” The sword had most likely been subdued by the Vermilion Birds. Should they go to Danxue Mountain and steal it for her Elder Sister? They saw it first, so it was rightfully theirs.

“How could a sword suddenly appear in Chongxuan Mountain?” Ming Jian Su was also puzzled. She took out the Chaos Mirror and saw that the Danxue Mountain lineage was searching for information related to the “Zhenyu Sword.” So that was its name. Like Eternal Sword, it had a two-character inscription. They would make a perfect pair.

Feng Chiyue leaned against Ming Jian Su, her chin resting on her shoulder as she glanced at the Chaos Mirror. “Zhenyu Sword? Never heard of it,” she said, shaking her head.

Ming Jian Su glanced at her, thinking, even if you had, you wouldn’t remember it anyway. A single sword wasn’t enough to justify such a frantic search. They were furious about the destruction of the Red Agate and wanted to find the sword’s owner to exact revenge. Of course, they wouldn’t dare to mention “Red Agate” explicitly. After all, it wouldn’t be easy to explain to the Heavenly Emperor how something that had been reported as destroyed could suddenly reappear.

The Danxue Mountain lineage was sparing no expense. They were offering a reward for any information related to the Zhenyu Sword, regardless of its usefulness. While speculating about their motives, other immortals shared any information they could find, flooding the Chaos Mirror with scrolling text.

Immortals often shared the same name, let alone swords.

In the past, there had been countless swords named “Undefeated.” However, they hadn’t lived up to such a grand name and had either broken or been renamed. Now, whenever “Undefeated” was mentioned in the Heavenly Court, it only brought Ming Jian Su to mind.

But “Zhenyu(Jade Guardian)” wasn’t as fortunate.

Ming Jian Su’s sharp eyes caught a message amidst the overwhelming flood of information.

“In the one hundred and first year of the Heavenly Emperor’s reign, a Daoist friend forged a sword for the Suxin Sword Master. Its inscription was ‘Zhenyu.’”

Many had overlooked this message. After all, the Suxin Sword Master had fallen many years ago, and the whereabouts of her sword were unknown.

However, the Vermilion Birds in Danxue Mountain were alarmed.

Even those who hadn’t lived through that era knew that the Suxin Sword Master had single-handedly stormed into the Demon Realm and beheaded the previous Demon Lord, Ming Ji.

There were many speculations about her motives. Some said she couldn’t stand the Demon Clan’s arrogance. Others said she had a personal grudge against the Demon Realm. Some even speculated that she was avenging the Phoenix Sovereign. Although no one knew for sure, some elders from the Feather Clan remembered that the Phoenix Sovereign had been close to a human wandering immortal, and the Suxin Sword Master was likely one of them.

As the Vermilion Bird elders contacted the person who had posted the message to inquire about the appearance of the Suxin Sword Master’s “Zhenyu Sword,” Ming Jian Su, also driven by curiosity, reached out to the wandering immortal for information. The wandering immortal was quite straightforward. He drew a picture of the Zhenyu Sword and sent it to her. Ming Jian Su examined it carefully. It was indeed identical to the sword she had seen in Chongxuan Mountain.

“So it really is the Suxin Sword Master’s sword,” Ming Jian Su said with a sigh, then pointed at Eternal Sword. “It’s a sign. All of this proves that I have a deep connection with the Suxin Sword Master. It seems I’m on the right path by following in her footsteps. How can a swordsman only have one sword?”

    In Danxue Mountain.

The Vermilion Bird elders compared the drawing to the sword in the casket. Their faces darkened.

If the Zhenyu Sword belonged to the Suxin Sword Master, who could they possibly seek justice from? Had it passed on to a new owner after her death? Questions piled up, weighing heavily on their minds. The Vermilion Bird elders carefully reviewed recent events in Chongxuan Mountain and finally noticed a discrepancy.

Since the four hundredth year of the Heavenly Emperor’s reign, extracting Red Agate from Chongxuan Mountain had become increasingly difficult.

They had moved the vein there after the Fall of the Phoenix. They had assumed that after two hundred years of mining, the easily accessible resources had been depleted, leaving only the deep and inaccessible parts of the mountain. But now, after discovering the Zhenyu Sword, they had a new theory. Could it be that the Suxin Sword Master had placed the Zhenyu Sword in the mountain without their knowledge, using its sword intent to suppress the Red Agate vein? If she had killed the Demon Lord to avenge the Phoenix Sovereign, then the current Danxue Mountain lineage were also her enemies, weren’t they? This possibility filled the elders with dread.

After a long silence, someone spoke softly, “But she’s dead.”

“We can’t rule out the possibility of the Zhenyu Sword having a new owner.”

The Swan Goose Elder suggested, “Why don’t we auction it off on the Chaos Mirror? If it still has an owner, they wouldn’t just stand by and watch it fall into someone else’s hands, would they?”

  • The Number One Good-for-Nothing in the Celestial Realm 33

    Chapter 33

Ming Jian Su held Feng Chiyue tightly. Although most of the time they were lost in passionate pleasures, there were moments when they engaged in serious cultivation. Dual cultivation wasn’t solely beneficial to Feng Chiyue; Ming Jian Su gained a lot from it too. After all, her junior sister was quite remarkable.

After feeding her the last of the spiritual pills, Feng Chiyue didn’t move her hand from Ming Jian Su’s lips. She continued to caress and tease them gently. When Ming Jian Su took her fingertip between her teeth, Feng Chiyue withdrew her hand, pushed away Ming Jian Su’s arm that was wrapped around her waist, and jumped out of her embrace. In the blink of an eye, she had disappeared into the distance.

Ming Jian Su sighed softly and patted her slightly flushed cheeks, then turned her attention back to the Chaos Mirror. She wanted to see who was spreading those negative rumors! Did they think a few obstacles would derail her plans? Absolutely not. She would eliminate all enemies, both hers and her junior sister’s!

Although the Celestial Feather Ministry was currently focused on verifying the Feather Clan registries, Ming Jian Su hadn’t forgotten about the upcoming examination. Being a compassionate person, she wouldn’t resort to “surprise attacks.” After pondering for a moment, she used Feng Chiyue’s Chaos Mirror to publish a new announcement, listing the required reading materials and a general outline of the examination process. In addition to demonstrating knowledge of their own clan’s culture and customs, candidates also needed to understand the history of the Heavenly Court, the principles of Daoist magic, and the rules, regulations, and responsibilities of the department they wished to join. This broadened the scope of the examination to encompass hundreds of historical records and Daoist scriptures.

    — Once again, I’m thankful to be born human. My condolences to our feathered friends.

    — Even with our immortal memory, aren’t hundreds of books a bit excessive? I’ve never even heard of some of these titles. I’d love to know where Feng Chiyue even found this information.

    — I’m starting to see black spots. Maybe I should just renounce my candidacy and become a carefree wandering immortal.

    — To the Daoist friend above, I heard the Feather Clan is verifying their registries. Who knows if they’ll start vetting and testing wandering immortals next? Those who fail will be sent back down to the mortal realm for reincarnation and further cultivation.

    — I’m just asking, is anyone planning to assassinate Feng Chiyue? Who gave her this terrible idea?

    — Based on my thousand years of experience roaming the mortal realm, this resembles the examination system used by mortal sects. Perhaps you could ask other Human Immortals about it.

    — Checking the registries is no easy task. I bet this Celestial Feather Ministry reform will fail at the very first step.

The Chaos Mirror was filled with lamentations, and the various Feather Clan factions were also shrouded in gloom. Those who had submitted their clan information early were somewhat relieved, but some had inflated their numbers, hoping to get away with it. After all, the Feather Clan population was vast, and the Celestial Feather Ministry had limited manpower. They couldn’t possibly check every single individual. Even if they did, as long as they kept their mouths shut, how would the Ministry officials know the truth?

In the marshes of Qingqiu, within the Great Wind Clan.

This lineage had always had a small population. Now, all its members were gathered together, discussing the Celestial Feather Ministry’s actions. The members of this clan were known for their fierce and aggressive temperaments. During the time when the Danxue Mountain lineage controlled the Celestial Feather Ministry, none of their members had been allowed to become immortal officials. As a result, they were either candidates waiting for a position or wandering immortals who had given up on pursuing official roles in the Heavenly Court.

“Clan Leader, I heard they found those four Barbarians who weren’t registered.”

“Even the Barbarian Clan Leader didn’t know where they went. How did the Celestial Feather Ministry find them?”

“Our clan isn’t that big. If we’re missing two members, wouldn’t the Ministry notice?”

The Great Wind Birds chattered amongst themselves, their voices laced with worry.

Da Feng Li, their clan leader, however, remained calm. “Barbarians are naturally timid. Who knows if this is just for show, to scare the other Feather Clans? The Danxue Mountain lineage knows our situation, but would they tell the Phoenixes? I think we’re worrying for nothing. How could those immortals in the Heavenly Court on Kunlun Mountain truly understand us?” There were vast differences between the various Feather Clans. The Five Phoenixes and Three Feathered Clans were at the top, while those like them were simply lumped together as “Feather Clan” or “other.” How could those lofty immortal officials possibly care about their small and insignificant clans?

As Da Feng Li spoke, the anxieties of the other Great Wind Birds subsided. After a brief pause, another Great Wind Bird spoke up. “What about Qingqiu?” Their Great Wind Clan resided in the marshes of Qingqiu, neighboring the Qingqiu Kingdom. They didn’t have a good relationship with those foxes. In ancient times, they would capture fox cubs for amusement, while those cunning foxes would steal their eggs. Now, their clan had dwindled to near extinction, but fortunately, Qingqiu had also closed its borders and was no longer involved in outside affairs.

Da Feng Li chuckled coldly. “Their relationship with the Heavenly Court is even worse.”

The Great Wind Clan meeting concluded without reaching any concrete conclusions. However, the anxieties of the clan members had been eased, and they no longer dwelled on the Celestial Feather Ministry’s actions.

However, on the very next day, a golden invitation descended upon the marshes of Qingqiu like a shooting star, landing in Da Feng Li’s hands.

As he scanned the inscription on the invitation, Da Feng Li’s brows furrowed. Without hesitation, he struck a large drum. The booming sound reverberated through the marshes, reaching every corner. Several dark figures shot down from the clouds, transforming into valiant figures as they landed in the plaza.

Once everyone had assembled, Da Feng Li cleared his throat and said gravely, “The Celestial Feather Ministry has sent us an invitation, requesting information on Da Feng Zhi and Da Feng Ting.” The two names were like stones dropped into a lake, creating ripples that spread outwards. They were members of their clan, but their unruly nature and refusal to be disciplined had forced them to send them away. As for their whereabouts, they couldn’t disclose that information.

“How did the Celestial Feather Ministry even know about their existence? Their names weren’t even on the old registry,” one Great Wind Bird said, baffled.

“Perhaps the Danxue Mountain lineage leaked the information?” another speculated. “If that’s the case, we should just report their information.”

“Nonsense!” a sharp voice interrupted. It was an elder Great Wind Bird. He glared at the younger clan member. “If that information gets out, our Great Wind lineage will be wiped out from the Immortal Realm!” No matter how strong their temper, they wouldn’t dare to defy those in power.

Da Feng Li spoke up. “If the Celestial Feather Ministry officials come to investigate, we’ll simply say they’re dead. No one is to say a word without my permission.” Did the Ministry expect them to dig up the bodies for inspection?

“What if the Ministry already knows about that place?” someone asked, trembling.

“Impossible,” Da Feng Li declared resolutely. Even the Heavenly Emperor didn’t know about that place.

The Great Wind Clan prepared to deceive the Ministry officials. However, when they sensed a powerful aura descending upon the marshes and went out to investigate, the first thing they saw were two swords radiating a sharp, cold light. One sword had a blade like two intertwined branches, black and white energies merging into a swirling taiji symbol, emanating a murderous aura. The other sword had a simple and ancient design, its hilt adorned with a tassel of phoenix feathers. The Phoenix’s cry echoed through the air, its overwhelming presence pressing down on the Great Wind Birds, leaving them momentarily breathless.

One was Ming Jian Su’s magic sword!

And the other, with its Phoenix feathers, could it be Feng Chiyue’s weapon?

Why were they using their sword intent to intimidate them from the start? Were they bullying them because their clan was small?

Alarm bells blared in Da Feng Li’s mind. His lips thinned, and his eyes flashed with a hint of malice.

Moments later, a golden chariot descended from the sky, its bells tinkling melodiously.

Before the occupants could emerge, Undefeated twitched, beating Eternal Sword to the draw and flinging open the curtain. A figure dressed in ethereal blue stepped out. Ming Jian Su didn’t even glance at the wary Great Wind Birds. Instead, she bowed and extended her hand towards the chariot, helping Feng Chiyue, resplendent in red and wearing a bright smile, to step out.

Feng Chiyue’s gaze fell on Da Feng Li’s tense face. “You underreported the population of your Great Wind Clan,” she said with a sweet smile. “The fine is twenty thousand Cinnabar Jade, payable within one hour.”

Ming Jian Su glanced at Feng Chiyue. She hadn’t mentioned this rule in the Chaos Mirror. But it didn’t matter. If her junior sister said there was a fine, then there was a fine. With a flick of her sleeve, her cold gaze landed on Da Feng Li. The two swords hummed, their sword intent as sharp and piercing as a biting wind. The message was clear: if Da Feng Li uttered a single word of defiance, they would be upon him.

Da Feng Li: “…” Were they officials from the Celestial Feather Ministry or bandits? When was this fine even established? Why hadn’t the Barbarian Clan been fined? He almost blurted out his questions, but fortunately, he caught himself just in time. He couldn’t give them any ammunition to use against him. Suppressing his rising anger, he took a deep breath and said in a low voice, “Da Feng Zhi and Da Feng Ting are already dead. There are only thirteen members in our Great Wind Clan. The information we submitted is accurate.”

Feng Chiyue scoffed. “Do you dare to swear on the Heavenly Dao?”

Da Feng Li didn’t answer. He frowned at Feng Chiyue and raised his voice. “What are you implying, Emissary? Are you accusing our Great Wind Clan of falsification?”

“I’m not accusing you,” Feng Chiyue said, shaking her head. Seeing Da Feng Li’s expression relax slightly, she immediately added, “I’m certain of it.”

The Celestial Feather Career Book clearly stated that Da Feng Zhi and Da Feng Ting were still alive. Who were they trying to fool by claiming they were dead?

Da Feng Li was so angry he laughed. “If you’re so certain, Emissary, does that mean you have some miraculous elixir that can bring the dead back to life? If you don’t provide evidence, does that mean you can arbitrarily decide how many members each clan has? Two people, twenty thousand Cinnabar Jade. If you go to a large clan with a thriving population, can you extort ten million Cinnabar Jade from them for a thousand people?” He was trying to paint Feng Chiyue as a greedy extortionist. As they argued, one of the clan members discreetly took out their Chaos Mirror and started recording the scene.

Recently, there had been a lot of news about Feng Chiyue and the Celestial Feather Ministry. As soon as those keywords were mentioned, a large crowd of idle immortals flocked to watch the drama unfold.

At that moment, many were glued to the scene titled “Feng Chiyue Extorting the Great Wind Clan.” Some even found watching through the Chaos Mirror unsatisfying and had already set off for the marshes of Qingqiu.

Ming Jian Su was acutely aware of the shifting energy. Her gaze, sharp as a blade, shot towards the Great Wind Bird holding the Chaos Mirror.

A chill ran down his spine. His hand trembled, and the Chaos Mirror slipped from his grasp, crashing to the ground with a bang that broke the tense silence.

Da Feng Li glanced at the fallen Chaos Mirror and sighed theatrically. “Are you refusing to even give us a chance to voice our grievances, Emissary?” Seeing that Ming Jian Su and Feng Chiyue remained silent, his courage grew. He took out another Chaos Mirror and channeled his consciousness into it. “Although our Great Wind Clan is small, we will not suffer such injustice!”

Ming Jian Su frowned slightly. When had these fierce and aggressive Great Wind Birds learned to play the victim? Were they planning to use the Chaos Mirror to rally public opinion against her? Her sword moved with her thoughts, its sword intent flashing forward like starlight. A crack appeared on the surface of several Chaos Mirrors.

Feng Chiyue reached out and grasped Ming Jian Su’s hand, her fingers stroking the back of her hand gently. So they wanted to exploit the Chaos Mirror? Fine, she could play that game too. She had spent the past two hundred years mastering the Chaos Mirror. Her eyes flickered with a faint golden light. “What grievance?” she asked, her voice deceptively sweet. “Tell us all about it.”

Just as Da Feng Li was about to launch into a tirade against Feng Chiyue, a Phoenix’s cry echoed in his ears. His mind was seized by an inexplicable force, and the lies he had prepared vanished from his tongue. His arrogance melted away, and he bowed to Feng Chiyue and Ming Jian Su. “Da Feng Zhi and Da Feng Ting were forced into labor in a mine,” he confessed. “They were not registered, they were not officials, and they did not become immortals. I implore Emissary Feng to seek justice for us!” His words stunned the other Great Wind Birds, leaving them speechless as they stared at their leader. Was their clan leader truly capable of such humility?

In the Chaos Mirror, many were still watching.

    — Can someone please tell me what just happened?

    — Weren’t they condemning Feng Chiyue just now? How did the situation suddenly turn around?

    — Forced labor? Where? What kind of mine?

    — Was Da Feng Li cursed? Is there a Daoist friend who can explain this?

The Vermilion Birds and Bifangs from Danxue Mountain were also watching. When they first heard the names Da Feng Zhi and Da Feng Ting, they hadn’t thought much of it. Seeing Da Feng Li berating Feng Chiyue had brought a smug smile to their faces. But that smile quickly vanished. As soon as the words “forced labor” were uttered, the Vermilion Bird elders paled.

“Virtuous Sound. Feng Chiyue is using the Phoenix’s Virtuous Sound,” an elder who was well-versed in Phoenix lore exclaimed. Suddenly, a realization dawned on him, and he finally understood how those Bifangs had died. Without the power to completely suppress Feng Chiyue, their own cultivation would be backfired by the Virtuous Sound. The last Phoenix to master this technique was the one whose name they dared not speak.

But now wasn’t the time to worry about the Virtuous Sound. It was about their mine! Da Feng Li didn’t know the true situation of that mine, but Feng Chiyue and Ming Jian Su would investigate. Even if they didn’t find that particular mine, if they discovered any of their other mines, it would be a disaster. After all, the vast majority of the laborers in their mines were unregistered.

The scene in the Chaos Mirror abruptly cut off.

Feng Chiyue had given Ming Jian Su a look, signaling her to interrupt the broadcast.

They couldn’t let anyone know about the mines involved.

After a moment of stunned silence, Da Feng Li snapped out of his trance. His expression shifted rapidly, and he glared at Feng Chiyue through gritted teeth. “You used a curse to trick me!”

Feng Chiyue rolled her eyes at him. What an idiot.

Ming Jian Su said coldly, “The Danxue Mountain lineage already knows you leaked information. Whether you tell us the location of the mine or not, the outcome for your Great Wind Clan will be the same.”

Da Feng Li’s voice turned icy. “I was only responsible for sending them away. I don’t know where the mine is.”

Feng Chiyue scoffed. “Aren’t you curious?”

    Da Feng Li remained silent.

Feng Chiyue continued, “Although I don’t know the location of the mine where the Great Wind Birds are working, I do know the locations of several unregistered private mines owned by the Danxue Mountain lineage. I’ll tell them you were the one who revealed the information.”

Da Feng Li stared at Feng Chiyue in disbelief, fuming. “You’re twisting the truth!”

Feng Chiyue nodded unabashedly. “Yes, I am.” She paused, then added earnestly, “You’re all going to die anyway. But there are many ways to die. You should strive for a meaningful death, so you can rest in peace without regrets.”

“Won’t your Celestial Feather Ministry protect our Great Wind Clan?” one of the other Great Wind Birds blurted out, unable to contain himself any longer.

“Why would we protect you? Have you paid your protection fee?” Feng Chiyue glared at him. Then, with a sweet smile, she said menacingly, “Didn’t you say there are only thirteen members in your clan? Perfect. Let’s kill two. Then we can search their souls. Perhaps we’ll find out the location of the mine.” Her tone resembled that of a villain in a play. The Great Wind Birds looked pleadingly at Ming Jian Su. To their surprise, she nodded in agreement, her actions completely at odds with her reputation as a dutiful and upright immortal.

Feng Chiyue continued, “Don’t even think about ‘redeeming yourselves through meritorious service.’ The two of us are more than enough to handle your entire Great Wind Clan.” As if to punctuate her words, light blazed from the two magic swords. The swords multiplied, their sharp and frigid sword intent encircling the Great Wind Birds, leaving them no chance of escape.

When had the Celestial Feather Ministry officials ever acted like this?

Humiliated, Da Feng Li weighed his options. He could be killed by Ming Jian Su right now, or he could risk being dealt with by the Danxue Mountain lineage later. He chose to reveal the location of the mine.

“The Red Jade Cave in Chongxuan Mountain,” he confessed. “They’re mining Red Agate.”

After contributing two skilled miners, the Great Wind Clan had received some benefits from the Danxue Mountain lineage. However, Da Feng Li was not easily satisfied. He had tried to gather information, hoping to leverage it for greater profit. Of course, when he discovered it was the Red Jade Cave, all his schemes vanished. Being bold was one thing, but he knew where to draw the line. The Danxue Mountain lineage might be willing to share some small profits, but crossing them on a matter of such importance would only lead to death.

Red Agate was a type of crystal that was extremely beneficial to Feather Clan cultivation and incredibly rare in the entire Immortal Realm. A thousand years ago, this vein belonged to the Phoenix Sovereign and was located in Danxue Mountain. But then a great calamity struck Danxue Mountain, and treasures like the Heavenly Phoenix Fruit Tree and other mystical trees were destroyed. Later, during the inventory, the Vermilion Birds had reported the Red Agate vein as destroyed as well. In truth, they had secretly moved the entire vein to Chongxuan Mountain. Currently, only a select few Feather Clans had access to it. Even the Heavenly Emperor was unaware of its existence.

“Red Agate?” After hearing Da Feng Li’s confession, Feng Chiyue pondered for a moment, then exclaimed excitedly, shaking Ming Jian Su’s arm. “Elder Sister, that’s mine!”

Da Feng Li: “…” How could it be hers? It clearly belonged to the Phoenix Sovereign, and if there was to be an heir, it should be a Phoenix from Phoenix Mountain. Wait, Feng Chiyue was also a Phoenix. Didn’t that mean she had every right to claim the Red Agate in Chongxuan Mountain? Hold on, wasn’t she supposed to be acting on behalf of the Celestial Feather Ministry? How did it suddenly become her personal property?

Ming Jian Su seemed to understand something. Her gaze softened as she looked at Feng Chiyue. “Mm,” she said gently. “It’s all yours.”

    In Phoenix Mountain.

Feng Yao was the most attentive to Feng Chiyue’s actions. Although the mere thought of Feng Chiyue made her head spin with anger, she couldn’t help but keep tabs on her. She had hoped that Ming Jian Su would be able to control Feng Chiyue and prevent her from causing chaos in the Immortal Realm. However, after Ming Jian Su’s return, things seemed to have taken a turn for the worse. The once-respectable East Abode Master was gradually becoming “Feng Chiyue-fied.”

“How did they even confirm that the Great Wind Clan underreported two members? They even knew their names.” Feng Yao was puzzled. The Barbarian Clan incident could be dismissed as a coincidence, but the Great Wind Clan as well? Did Ming Jian Su have such a deep understanding of their Feather Clan? That seemed unlikely.

“Virtuous Sound. It’s the Phoenix’s Virtuous Sound,” the Phoenix Elder said, her voice trembling. The Phoenixes were known for their virtue, and every true Phoenix had a “Virtue” character imprinted on their head feathers. However, only a handful in their entire lineage had cultivated their “Virtue” into the “Virtuous Sound.” Ignoring Feng Yao’s muttering, she turned sharply. “What did the East Abode Master say about Feng Chiyue’s origins?”

“She just said she found her somewhere. She didn’t specify where,” Feng Yao replied. Of course, they had dismissed Ming Jian Su’s vague explanation as a lie and unanimously agreed that she had stolen a Phoenix egg from Phoenix Mountain and hatched Feng Chiyue. Once they were convinced of this, they hadn’t bothered to check who was missing an egg. Some things were better left unexamined. “What do you mean?”

The Phoenix Elder lowered her eyelids and said after a long pause, “The Heavenly Court has the Merit Mirror. We, the Feather Clan, have the Career Book.” She didn’t elaborate, simply saying, “Let’s wait and see.” If the Celestial Feather Ministry knew the exact population of every Feather Clan faction, it couldn’t be attributed to one person’s ability. There must be a higher power at play. A while back, the East Abode Master had mentioned Nirvana… perhaps it wasn’t just a casual remark? Could Feng Chiyue be harboring a deeper secret?

Chongxuan Mountain was located three thousand miles south of Danxue Mountain, a desolate and uninhabited land.

Since this involved her future fortune, Feng Chiyue decided, for once, to be discreet. She suppressed her aura, making herself practically invisible.

Ming Jian Su donned the disguise she had used in Asura City, her appearance transforming in an instant.

Feng Chiyue stared at Ming Jian Su for a long moment, then suddenly covered her face and sighed dramatically.

“Junior Sister?” Ming Jian Su looked at her, confused.

Feng Chiyue frowned. “Put on your veil.”

Ming Jian Su obeyed. As she covered her face, she noticed Feng Chiyue releasing a sigh of relief, as if a great weight had been lifted from her shoulders. Ming Jian Su quickly understood. Her junior sister was hiding her plain face! Was this appropriate? Was this reasonable? If she, Ming Jian Su, had disguised herself as an ordinary person, her junior sister wouldn’t have reacted this way!

“Junior Sister,” Ming Jian Su said, displeased. After mentally lecturing herself to be more tolerant, she added, “You should disguise yourself too.”

“No,” Feng Chiyue refused flatly. But with her striking appearance, everyone would recognize her immediately. After thinking for a while, she reluctantly transformed into a palm-sized white bird and perched on Ming Jian Su’s shoulder.

Ming Jian Su was startled. Without thinking, she scooped Feng Chiyue into her arms. Apart from its wings and tail feathers, the bird was covered in soft, snowy down. It was incredibly soft and fluffy to the touch. Although she had never seen her junior sister’s true Phoenix form… this adorable transformation wasn’t bad either.

Feng Chiyue, after being petted by Ming Jian Su, felt dizzy for a moment. She glared at her with her round, black eyes, then pecked her hand sharply, calling her name angrily.

She knew Ming Jian Su was evil! Did she think she could just see her true Phoenix form whenever she wanted? Dream on!

    Chapter 32 p2

“What idea?” Ming Jian Su asked, also eager to watch the drama unfold. She had already found the answer on the Chaos Mirror. Feng Chiyue had pointed out the flaws in Chu Yi’s techniques and suggested that Ying Cunxin try them out in the Ethereal Spirit Realm. At first, Ming Jian Su was proud of her amazing junior sister, but then she realized something was wrong. She frowned. “The East Sea Dragon Princess admires strength. By helping her defeat Chu Yi, aren’t you proving that you’re stronger than Chu Yi?” What if Ying Cunxin fell for her junior sister? That was unacceptable!

Feng Chiyue smiled, her eyes gleaming with triumph. “I told her that Chu Yi herself revealed those flaws.” The entire Immortal Realm knew that she and Chu Yi didn’t get along and often argued. Wasn’t it normal to learn about each other’s weaknesses during their arguments? It just showed that Chu Yi had self-awareness. Using “Chu Yi” to defeat Chu Yi had nothing to do with her, Feng Chiyue. “They say the Emperor’s Daughter is unmoved by both soft and hard approaches. I don’t think so. First, we need to crush her spirit and arrogance, then create a sense of mystery, pique her curiosity, offer occasional concern and warmth, and maintain a certain distance.”

Ming Jian Su started to feel amused, but then a strange feeling of unease settled in her heart. She looked at Feng Chiyue, a faint smile on her lips. “Why are you so experienced, Junior Sister?”

Feng Chiyue snorted. “Well, you think I watch all those plays for nothing? I’m working hard too, you know?”

Ming Jian Su: “…” Was her junior sister working hard in the right direction? While some toiled like oxen, others could control everything with a smile and a few words.

    In the Ethereal Spirit Realm.

Chu Yi noticed that she was entering the realm more frequently. She used to despise this “playground.” She checked the records. Every time, it was to fight Ying Cunxin, and she had never lost. The East Sea Dragon Princess’s persistence was admirable, but it was pointless. Seeing Ying Cunxin’s invitation on the Chaos Mirror, she accepted it casually, thinking to herself that this would be the last time.

Although Ying Cunxin admired strength, she didn’t enjoy fighting. Her recent battles with Chu Yi in the Ethereal Spirit Realm had been more than she had experienced in the past hundred years. The Dragon Palace’s techniques were no inferior to those of the Heavenly Court, but her goals differed from Chu Yi’s, who aspired to be the strongest immortal. Naturally, the depth of their understanding also differed. Fortunately, despite her laziness, she was still quite talented. She had improved with each battle, not losing too badly. However, it wasn’t enough to move the Emperor’s Daughter’s heart of stone. She needed to win once, to make Chu Yi see her in a new light.

“Last time,” Chu Yi said, feeling the need to make it clear to Ying Cunxin. Seeing Ying Cunxin nod, she raised her sword, said, “Excuse me,” and unleashed her sword intent, a wave of boundless sword light spreading out before her. Ying Cunxin calmly took out her jade flute. The clear notes pierced the clouds, transforming into a surging tide that crashed towards Chu Yi. The sword light clashed with the tide, a roaring sound echoing through the realm, like the clash of armies, a magnificent display of power. Ying Cunxin, dressed in white, her sleeves billowing in the wind, was enveloped in a protective aura. It expanded, deflecting the powerful sword intent that had pierced through the tide. Chu Yi’s swordsmanship relied on brute force, with little variation. After their previous encounters, Ying Cunxin had returned to the East Sea and studied ancient texts, using the Calm Sea Pearl to cultivate a technique that borrowed strength to counter strength. As she activated the technique, sword lights shot out, scattering and dancing, combined with the fluctuating flute notes, their speed blinding.

After countless victories, Chu Yi hadn’t taken Ying Cunxin seriously. Now, seeing Ying Cunxin’s sudden change in tactics, she was caught off guard and hastily retreated. A high-pitched dragon cry rang out, and a white dragon, its scales gleaming silver, flashed past, snatching a pearl ornament from her hair.

    The flute music abruptly stopped.

Ying Cunxin twirled the coral flute in her fingers, tossed the ornament back, and looked at Chu Yi, a triumphant smile on her lips. “You lose,” she said.

Chu Yi’s face was filled with frustration. She stared at Ying Cunxin in disbelief, then said, her lips pursed, “I was careless. Let’s have another round.”

Ying Cunxin smiled sweetly. “Your Highness should honor our agreement,” she said. Ignoring Chu Yi’s protests, she withdrew her consciousness from the Ethereal Spirit Realm. Soon, she received a message from Chu Yi on the Chaos Mirror. In the past, Chu Yi had never initiated contact with her unless she needed something. Remembering Feng Chiyue’s advice about maintaining a “distance,” Ying Cunxin ignored her. She rested her chin on her hands, lying on her bed of shells, a smile on her face. But then, her brow furrowed. If things went as expected, Chu Yi, favored by the Mandate of Heaven, would inherit the throne in the future. Her Dao companion would also be born in the realm of yin. Where would she fit in? Well, perhaps after Chu Yi ascended the throne, there would be other powerful immortals in the Heavenly Court? She wasn’t obligated to admire Chu Yi. Ying Cunxin’s mind raced with thoughts, tossing and turning on her bed. Pearls, clear and radiant, rolled off her body and scattered on the ground, their sound like jade chimes.

“Princess, the Dragon King has sent someone to ask if you took the Calm Sea Pearl,” a timid voice interrupted her thoughts.

Ying Cunxin: “…” She had completely forgotten about it! After a moment of thought, she said, “Tell them, ‘It’s still in the East Sea. Does it matter who has it? Tell them to be sensible and stop making a fuss.’” There weren’t many dragons left who were as considerate and selfless as her, always putting the interests of the East Sea first.

The shell maiden didn’t dare repeat Ying Cunxin’s words verbatim. She softened them, but the “stingy” Dragon King was still furious. However, Ying Cunxin was his only heir. He couldn’t beat her or scold her, so he could only let her do as she pleased.

“Fellow Daoist, spoiling your child like this is unwise,” the West Sea Dragon King commented, sighing, as he was currently a guest in the East Sea.

“Should I throw her into the prison? She’s my only child. I can’t alienate her,” the East Sea Dragon King replied, defending himself. He didn’t want to talk about his daughter anymore. He changed the subject. “The Celestial Feather Ministry has started making moves. Will they truly separate from the Heavenly Court in the future?” Among the three ministries, the Celestial Feather Ministry had the closest ties to the Heavenly Court. If even they could separate, then the Four Seas Ministry also had a good chance of completely breaking free from the Heavenly Court. They hadn’t complained about the current system for thousands of years, but with the Heavenly Emperor’s current behavior, they feared that one day, they might also be sacrificed for the sake of some so-called benefit, just like the Phoenix Sovereign.

The West Sea Dragon King frowned. “Isn’t it said that the three ministries are now under the Celestial Mother’s control? She was born in the realm of yin. She’s impartial and more broad-minded than the Heavenly Emperor. If that’s the case, it’ll be difficult for the three ministries to completely separate from the Heavenly Court.” He paused, then added, “Why did the Celestial Mother suddenly leave seclusion? Why was there no warning?” He had almost forgotten her existence.

“Who knows?” the East Sea Dragon King said.

“Let’s see how the reforms in the Celestial Feather Ministry turn out. We don’t need to change everything. We can just adopt the assessment system. It’ll save us from those constant complaints from the various aquatic lineages. It’s so annoying,” the West Sea Dragon King said. He ruled the West Sea and didn’t lack Cinnabar Jade. The officials in the Four Seas Ministry had always been those who were loyal to the Heavenly Court. Now, they could use the assessment as an opportunity to remove them and replace them with their own people.

The changes were happening in the Celestial Feather Ministry, but everyone in the Immortal Realm was watching, even the wandering immortals who didn’t follow the Heavenly Court. Some wandering immortals preferred freedom and independence, some couldn’t obtain official positions and had given up even on being candidates for selection, and some couldn’t stand the corruption and hypocrisy of the Heavenly Court. If things improved, some of them might be willing to serve, as the Heavenly Court offered salaries, residences, and access to Daoist texts.

    — I guarantee that the Celestial Feather Ministry’s reforms will fail within a few days. Back when I was in the mortal realm, my sect also tried to reform after protests from the outer disciples, but it was abandoned within two days. It affects the interests of so many officials. Will they allow it?

    — But this time, the East Abode Master is involved. I heard that some immortals from Danxue Mountain protested, and they were all obliterated. Even the Vermilion Bird and Bifang elders don’t dare to say a word.

    — Unless someone can restrain the East Abode Master.

    — The North Star Lord is on good terms with her. The West River Lord doesn’t care about worldly affairs. The South Vermilion Lord is terrified. Who else can stop her?

    — You’re so naive. Do you think the only capable fighters in the Heavenly Court are the Four Generals? Not to mention the Realm Beyond Heaven, there are also some Star Monarchs in seclusion within the Heavenly Court. They’ve experienced the war between immortals and demons. Although they don’t hold official positions, their disciples are everywhere. Just wait. There will be more drama in a few days.

Ming Jian Su saw the discussions on the Chaos Mirror and felt a twinge of annoyance. She knew that some of the old geezers in the Heavenly Court were from the feathered race. If they intervened, what should she do? Kill them all? She hadn’t fought them before and didn’t know their true abilities. Well, it just meant she wasn’t strong enough to create a world where her junior sister could do as she pleased. She only had two swords. It wasn’t enough! Should she go “treasure hunting” on the battlefield between the Immortal and Demon Realms again?

“What are you thinking about?” A weight settled in her arms. Ming Jian Su instinctively wrapped her arms around Feng Chiyue’s waist. “Nothing,” she said, shaking her head. Feng Chiyue hummed in response but didn’t press further. She took out a few elixirs and fed them to Ming Jian Su.

After swallowing them, Ming Jian Su asked, puzzled, “What are these?” She didn’t feel any different.

“Primordial Energy Elixirs,” Feng Chiyue replied casually. She had collected some primordial energy at some point and, seeing it lying around, had combined it with other heavenly treasures to refine elixirs. “Elder Sister, you need to nourish your body. I’m relying on you to cultivate diligently and then transfer your cultivation to me through dual cultivation.”

    Chapter 32 p1

Unseemly and embarrassing events were rarely documented in official historical records. However, unlike mortals, immortals rarely forgot anything they had experienced. Thus, besides the official records in the Wen Qu Treasure Pavilion, there were many other versions circulating, such as the original records of the feathered race preserved in Phoenix Mountain. No one had paid much attention to them before, as no one enjoyed reading history. But now that the Celestial Feather Ministry was incorporating the history of the various lineages into the assessment, they needed to choose one version as the official text. Over time, the other versions would be dismissed as unofficial, and the truth would become muddled.

Feng Yao’s words instilled a sense of urgency in the Phoenix elder. The thought of their history being distorted in the future, with the traitors rewriting their narrative, filled her with anger and resentment.

“Copy all the historical records in our clan and send them to Dong’e Mountain!” she ordered immediately.

Feng Yao agreed, then added, “But I doubt Feng Chiyue will accept them.” She had given up on Feng Chiyue. After all, this was someone who had dared to set fire to Danxue Mountain. She had no respect for their ancestral land. Could they expect her to respect the history of the feathered race? She might just randomly choose a version and use it. As soon as her pessimistic words left her lips, a cold glare shot towards her. Feng Yao chuckled awkwardly and hurried off to complete her task.

However, when Feng Yao went to Dong’e Mountain the next day with the compiled jade slips, she didn’t see Feng Chiyue or Ming Jian Su. She only saw Zhu Wan, who was feeding wild birds with Heavenly Phoenix fruits during a break from her sword practice.

Even Feng Yao, as a Phoenix, hadn’t seen Heavenly Phoenix fruits in a long time, let alone other members of the feathered race. Fortunately, she was a mature Phoenix and managed to tear her gaze away. She thought to herself, the East Abode Master truly possessed extraordinary abilities. No wonder Feng Chiyue was so willing to stay in Dong’e Mountain. If she had Heavenly Phoenix fruits every day, she would also be happy to stay! It never occurred to her that the fruits were brought back by Feng Chiyue.

“Fellow Daoist Feng.” Zhu Wan was still polite to Feng Yao. When her Master was away, Phoenix Mountain had been generous, showing more kindness than any other immortal official in the Immortal Realm. Although Feng Yao rarely visited anymore because of Feng Chiyue’s terrible temper, they would occasionally chat on the Chaos Mirror, reminiscing about the trials and tribulations of raising a Phoenix.

It was better that Feng Chiyue wasn’t here. It would save her from being insulted. Feng Yao thought to herself. She smiled brightly at Zhu Wan, not asking about Feng Chiyue or Ming Jian Su’s whereabouts. She handed the jade slips to Zhu Wan. “These are the historical records related to the feathered race compiled by Phoenix Mountain. Please pass them on to Minister Feng,” she said.

Zhu Wan accepted the jade slips. “No problem,” she said.

Feng Yao sighed in relief. Although Zhu Wan’s abilities were somewhat lacking, she was still reliable. She had initially planned to leave after delivering the jade slips, but her gaze couldn’t help but linger on the birds on the swing set. “Fellow Daoist Zhu, why are you feeding them Heavenly Phoenix fruits?” she asked.

Zhu Wan shrugged. “We have plenty of them, but the Immortal Monarch thinks they’re not fresh because they’ve been stored in jade boxes for who knows how long. She refuses to eat them.”

Feng Yao was speechless. The words “what a waste” echoed in her mind. The feathered immortals of Phoenix Mountain hadn’t tasted Heavenly Phoenix fruits in years! Why was it Feng Chiyue who was lucky enough to live in Dong’e Mountain?! At that moment, Feng Yao was incredibly envious of Feng Chiyue’s carefree life.

“Do you want some?” Zhu Wan asked.

Feng Yao shook her head hastily. She was afraid that once she tasted the Heavenly Phoenix fruits, she wouldn’t want to leave Dong’e Mountain.

“Farewell,” she said hurriedly, transforming into a Phoenix and soaring into the sky, disappearing from Zhu Wan’s sight in an instant.

Zhu Wan didn’t pay much attention to Feng Yao’s strange behavior. She tossed the Heavenly Phoenix fruits onto the ground and started counting the birds out of boredom. Suddenly, she noticed something was amiss. There was a new blue bird among the flock that often appeared in Dong’e Mountain. Where had it come from? She muttered to herself, then watched as the agile blue bird flapped its wings, kicked away a bird that was trying to steal its food, and snatched a spiritual fruit with its beak, its movements as swift as lightning.

“They say these fruits can transform birds into Phoenixes. I wonder if that’s a good thing or a bad thing,” Zhu Wan said, shaking her head. Feng Chiyue was actually quite kind to these silly birds. However, once they gained enough spiritual intelligence to transform into human form, she would definitely throw them out of Dong’e Mountain. After all, Dong’e Mountain couldn’t accommodate a second bird from the Phoenix lineage.

At dusk, Feng Chiyue and Ming Jian Su returned together.

Zhu Wan was already accustomed to their blatant intimacy. With an impassive face, she presented the jade slips Feng Yao had given her.

Ming Jian Su accepted the jade slips. “I see,” she said. Seeing the curiosity in Feng Chiyue’s eyes, she explained, “The various lineages have their own historical records, even unofficial ones, which might differ from the official versions in the Wen Qu Treasure Pavilion. The history of the feathered race has been rewritten many times over the past thousand years. Phoenix Mountain is afraid that we’ll only use the version from the Wen Qu Treasure Pavilion for the assessment, burying the truth.”

Feng Chiyue chuckled, a hint of mockery in her voice. “They’re being quite considerate now.” She didn’t return the jade slips. She pulled Ming Jian Su back to the hall and talked about other matters. “Where should we go tomorrow?”

They hadn’t gone to the Celestial Feather Ministry today. Instead, they had visited the Man Man tribe. The Man Man tribe was among those who had actively reported their numbers and registered their names. However, their information differed slightly from the Celestial Feather Career Book. Some details were missing.

Ming Jian Su and Feng Chiyue had inquired and discovered that even the Man Man chieftain wasn’t aware of the discrepancy. In the end, they had summoned all the Man Mans and questioned them one by one, finally learning that four of them hadn’t gone through the Celestial Feather Ministry and had offered themselves as mounts to immortals directly.

Ming Jian Su pondered for a moment.

    “The Gale Tribe,” she said.

They were a fierce bird tribe.

The Celestial Feather Hall only had records of thirteen of them, which didn’t match the number in the Celestial Feather Career Book. Two were missing. The Career Book only mentioned “miners,” but they would have to visit the Gale Tribe to find out the specifics.

“Oh,” Feng Chiyue said, not bothering to think too much about it. After a while, she hooked her little finger, and a red thread materialized, its other end tied to Ming Jian Su’s little finger.

It was a “Twin Wings” thread, a gift from the Man Man tribe, symbolizing unwavering loyalty. Man Man birds “have one wing and one eye, and can only fly when together.” In the Immortal Realm, they were a symbol of fidelity. Only honored guests received the Man Man tribe’s blessing. “The Gale Tribe has nothing,” Feng Chiyue said slowly.

Ming Jian Su thought for a moment. The Gale Tribe indeed didn’t have anything that could interest Feng Chiyue. She held Feng Chiyue’s hand. “The Gale Tribe is in the marshes of Qing Qiu, adjacent to Qing Qiu foxes. We can spend a few days in Qing Qiu,” she said.

Feng Chiyue’s eyes widened, alarm bells ringing in her head. “You know the foxes of Qing Qiu?” she asked suspiciously. Which foxes? Why hadn’t she heard of them? Did Ming Jian Su think foxes were cute because they were fluffy? Should she go to Qing Qiu and burn all those annoying four-legged beasts?

Ming Jian Su’s expression remained unchanged. “We’ll know when we get there,” she said calmly.

“But I remember that Qing Qiu isn’t very fond of Heavenly Court officials,” Feng Chiyue said, relieved. She played with Ming Jian Su’s little finger and added, “In their eyes, you’re the Heavenly Emperor’s top general, his number one lackey.”

Over a thousand years ago, the Heavenly Emperor, three hundred years into his reign, had fallen in love with Tushan Liusu, the Holy Maiden of Qing Qiu, and wanted to make her his Heavenly Consort. Tushan Liusu refused, and the previous ruler of Qing Qiu had tried to force her to go to the Heavenly Court, leading to chaos in Qing Qiu.

Tushan Liusu betrayed Qing Qiu and fled to the Demon Realm, while Tushan Bi seized the opportunity to kill the ruler and become the new ruler of Qing Qiu, severing ties with the Heavenly Court. The Heavenly Emperor had wanted to punish Qing Qiu, but it was only a hundred and one years after the Fall of the Phoenix pact. The immortals didn’t want another war, and the matter was ultimately dropped, as it was the Heavenly Emperor who had acted dishonorably.

Now, Tushan Liusu was the Demon Sovereign, and Tushan Bi, the ruler of Qing Qiu, had been close to her. The Chaos Mirror was filled with rumors about Qing Qiu colluding with the Demon Realm. However, the Heavenly Court had never obtained concrete evidence and couldn’t take action against them.

Ming Jian Su thought of the incident between the Heavenly Court and Qing Qiu, her eyelid twitching. Lackey? Why were her junior sister’s words always so unpleasant? She frowned and said, her voice drawn out, “Junior Sister–”

“My Elder Sister is the most outstanding person in the world. She should be treated as an honored guest wherever she goes,” Feng Chiyue said, correcting herself. She looked at Ming Jian Su sincerely. “As long as we kill all the foxes who dislike you, Elder Sister, the gates of Qing Qiu will surely open for you.”

Knowing Feng Chiyue, Ming Jian Su could tell that she was serious about killing. However, who would actually do the killing was another matter. “Junior Sister, we should strive for peace and kindness,” she said, trying to reason with her. How could she fix her junior sister’s temper? She was making more and more enemies in the Immortal Realm. Even if they wanted to kill them all, it would take a long time.

“Are you blaming me?” Feng Chiyue asked, her eyes filled with accusation. She turned away, biting her lip. “I was always in the Abyss of the Milky Way before. I never interacted with others. I don’t know how to be a good person. And I’m incompetent. I’m not like Chu Yi, who can control the wind and rain. I’m not as knowledgeable as Ming Yuheng, who earns everyone’s praise. I’m just a wild Phoenix, abandoned by my clan. I know my heart is wicked. You don’t have to force yourself to stay with me.”

Ming Jian Su: “…” She took a deep breath and quickly comforted Feng Chiyue. Then, she asked, “Junior Sister, what plays have you been watching on the Chaos Mirror lately?”

“None,” Feng Chiyue replied, her expression changing rapidly. Her sadness and loneliness vanished, replaced by a clear, bright gaze, like the moon and stars. She poked Ming Jian Su’s cheek. “Why did you react differently when you talked to Ying Cunxin?”

“Ying Cunxin?” Ming Jian Su massaged her forehead, a sense of foreboding washing over her. Before she could ask, Feng Chiyue took out the Chaos Mirror. Ying Cunxin’s message was still there. It was almost the same speech, but with an added line: “I’ll try it on Chu Yi.” Feng Chiyue hadn’t replied. About two hours later, there was another message: “It didn’t work on Chu Yi. What should I do?” followed by a series of complaints.

Ming Jian Su blinked, then asked after a moment, “Junior Sister, when did you exchange name seals with Ying Cunxin?”

“After she visited Dong’e Mountain,” Feng Chiyue replied. After a moment, she added, “Elder Sister, haven’t you noticed that Chu Yi hasn’t been bothering you lately?” She stared at Ming Jian Su, practically begging for praise.

Ming Jian Su hadn’t been paying attention to Chu Yi at all. She hadn’t even noticed her “harassment.” Now, prompted by Feng Chiyue, she finally realized.

“Yes, you’re right,” she said, nodding emphatically.

Then, she sighed. “The East Sea Dragon Princess is truly persistent.” Ying Cunxin’s words were strange, but knowing Chu Yi, she would probably just drag her into the Ethereal Spirit Realm and punch her.

Feng Chiyue agreed. Before Ming Jian Su could scroll down, she said excitedly, “I gave Ying Cunxin a new idea.”

  • The Number One Good-for-Nothing in the Celestial Realm 31p2

    Chapter 31 p2

The Heavenly Emperor shook his head. “I don’t know.” He had initially thought it was because of some major event, but there hadn’t been any significant changes in the Heavenly Mechanism. “The Celestial Mother and I are one, both manifestations of the Mandate of Heaven. She will be in charge of the Celestial Feather Ministry, the Four Seas Ministry, and the White Tiger Ministry. As for Danxue Mountain… be careful.”

Chang Li lowered her eyelids. “Thinking about it, Minister Feng’s actions might not be a bad thing. It might even motivate our lineages in Danxue Mountain to improve.”

That was exactly what the Heavenly Emperor wanted to hear. He smiled. “I’m glad you understand.” Although he had relinquished control of the feathered race, he didn’t want them to completely side with the Celestial Mother. As for the Four Seas Ministry and the White Tiger Ministry, he didn’t care much. Most of their members were wandering immortals who had little to do with the Heavenly Court, maintaining only a nominal relationship.

After leaving the Purple Empyrean Palace, Chang Li went to Danxue Mountain.

The place was filled with complaints and curses directed at Feng Chiyue and the Celestial Feather Ministry. Their resentment was even stronger than it had been a thousand years ago.

When she met with the elders, before she could even speak, they started clamoring, demanding that they get rid of Feng Chiyue. The Celestial Feather Ministry had been established for a thousand years. How could the rules be changed so easily? Why should they be changed? Chang Li listened to them with a cold expression, then said calmly, “The Celestial Feather Ministry is now under the Celestial Mother’s control. Whether you like it or not, it’s going to change. Instead of complaining, you should follow the announcement from the Celestial Feather Ministry.”

“The assessment is fair. Think about it. Feng Chiyue hasn’t favored any particular side, has she?”

It was true, but they had always been able to take what they wanted before. Now, with this new restriction, they no longer had the freedom to do as they pleased. How could they accept that?

“Didn’t you agree with us before, Fellow Daoist Nan Li, that we should drive Feng Chiyue out of the Celestial Feather Ministry? Why have you changed your mind?” the Swan Goose elder asked suddenly, his cold gaze fixed on Chang Li, as if looking at a traitor.

Chang Li ignored his icy tone. “Because it’s impossible,” she said calmly. Even when Ming Jian Su was gone and the Celestial Mother was in seclusion, they hadn’t been able to deal with Feng Chiyue. What made them think they could do it now? The Celestial Pivot Department had stopped investigating the deaths of Bi Feng and the others, but they should all know who was responsible. Whether they acted openly or secretly, they would only suffer losses. Why cling to their previous plan?

“The content of the previous assessment was mostly based on the history of the feathered race. It’s our history. Studying it wouldn’t hurt,” Chang Li said. She lowered her eyelids, recalling the past. Back then, the Phoenix Sovereign had always been engrossed in books and had held their lineage leaders and elders to strict standards. They had discussed the future of the feathered race together, but it had all come to an abrupt end a thousand years ago.

The assessment questions weren’t difficult, but very few, from both Danxue Mountain and Phoenix Mountain, could answer them. When had it started? They had even forgotten their own history. Her gaze fell upon the magnificent murals—within the lines and colors, if one looked closely, they could still find traces of the past. Back then, they hadn’t just depicted the history of the Vermilion Birds, Swan Geese, and Bifangs. They had depicted the rise of the feathered race, led by the Five Phoenixes and Three Feathers. But after the flames of calamity, everything had vanished. They had started to fear and loathe their own history.

“It’s all in the past. What’s the point of studying it? To make us, the traitors, reminisce about the Phoenix Sovereign?” the Bifang elder complained. As soon as he finished speaking, a chilling gaze pierced him like a sword. He felt as if he had been struck by a wave, his head spinning. His face paled, sweat beading on his forehead, his body trembling uncontrollably. Even after the oppressive aura subsided, he remained fearful, not daring to look up at Chang Li.

“If you’re unwilling to learn, there are plenty of others who are. For example, the Phoenixes, who have always been suppressed. Do you think they’ll miss this opportunity?” Chang Li said coldly.

She didn’t look at the other lineage leaders again, transforming into a streak of crimson fire and leaving Danxue Mountain without a trace of nostalgia. Just like the past that had been so easily discarded, once she had decided to let go, there was no need to look back.

    In Dong’e Mountain.

Ming Jian Su received the Celestial Mother’s decree from the Heavenly Court. She was surprised, but then she dismissed it. With or without the decree, she would have supported Feng Chiyue. The decree simply made everything official. She stood up and walked to the window, hearing the clear, melodious sound of silver bells.

Feng Chiyue was sitting on the swing set under the peach tree, playing with the birds. She tossed small pieces of spiritual fruit onto the ground, and when the birds gathered around, she shook the bells, startling them and sending them scattering. But after several repetitions, the birds were no longer afraid. They flew back, chirping as they pecked at the fruit. Some even landed on Feng Chiyue’s shoulders, allowing her to stroke their plump, fluffy bellies.

Why were these birds so carefree? Ming Jian Su felt a pang of jealousy and discreetly released a bit of her sword intent, scaring the birds away. Seeing this, she smiled happily.

“Elder Sister?” Feng Chiyue knew it was Ming Jian Su’s doing. She jumped off the swing and went to the window, looking at Ming Jian Su through the glass.

Under Feng Chiyue’s gaze, Ming Jian Su suddenly felt a blush creep up her cheeks. “I–”

“You what?” Feng Chiyue asked, blinking.

Seeing a bird peeking its head out from behind a branch, an idea struck Ming Jian Su. “I haven’t seen your true form yet,” she blurted out.

“You want to see it?” Feng Chiyue asked, smiling.

Ming Jian Su nodded. Wasn’t it obvious? She also wanted to get some phoenix feathers.

“Oh,” Feng Chiyue said, raising an eyebrow. “Then keep dreaming.” Although she was a Phoenix, for some reason, she didn’t like her true form. She preferred to remain in human form. She didn’t say anything else to Ming Jian Su, turning and walking away. She sat on the swing and pushed off with her toes, soaring through the air. The wind billowed her vibrant red robes, making her look like a blazing sun. A faint melody drifted through the air. Ming Jian Su couldn’t hear the lyrics clearly, but the scattered birds flew back, forming a flock that danced gracefully in the sky, following the rhythm of the song.

Ming Jian Su watched the “All Birds Pay Homage to the Phoenix” dance with a gentle smile. After a long while, she remembered something important. She took out the Chaos Mirror, found Feng Yao’s name seal, and asked her a question.

“Do you keep records of all Nirvanas in your clan?”

In Phoenix Mountain, the reforms in the Celestial Feather Ministry were causing a stir. Feng Yao was debating whether to contact Feng Chiyue when she received Ming Jian Su’s message.

    “Yes,” she replied cautiously.

“Do all Phoenixes undergo Nirvana under the care of their clan?” Ming Jian Su asked.

“Yes,” Feng Yao replied. There weren’t many in their clan who had achieved Nirvana. Seeing that there was no response for a while, she asked, “What’s wrong? Is Feng Chiyue about to undergo Nirvana? If so, please send her back to Phoenix Mountain.”

Ming Jian Su’s reply was quick this time. “No, she’s not.” Her junior sister had already undergone Nirvana once. She didn’t even know how old she was. Living in isolation, trapped in the Abyss of the Milky Way… it didn’t seem like she had a good relationship with the Phoenixes. Or perhaps, as she suspected, her junior sister was that person. But what had happened? Ming Jian Su frowned, pondering.

She took out the Celestial Feather Career Book and looked up the information about the Phoenix lineage. The Phoenix Sovereign’s name wasn’t there, as if it had been erased. However, there was a record of her junior sister. She stared at the three lonely characters “Feng Chiyue,” not listed under any lineage, as if she had appeared out of thin air. It was suspicious.

She didn’t know when the singing had stopped. Only the chirping of the birds filled the air. Ming Jian Su put away the Chaos Mirror and looked at Feng Chiyue on the swing, her gaze filled with tenderness. She thought to herself, no matter who she was before her Nirvana, her junior sister was hers now. No one could take her away!

    In Phoenix Mountain.

Feng Yao was puzzled by Ming Jian Su’s two consecutive rejections. She took the Chaos Mirror and went to see the elders. Earlier, officials from the Celestial Pivot Department had come to ask about the deaths of Bi Feng and the others, saying that Danxue Mountain suspected they were involved. They hadn’t done it, of course. As for Feng Chiyue… they had initially thought it was impossible, but Ming Jian Su had returned at that time. Perhaps she had helped eliminate the witnesses? But Ming Jian Su was usually quite restrained.

There was only one possibility that could have driven her to such an extreme: Feng Chiyue was seriously injured! Feng Chiyue hadn’t gone to the Celestial Feather Ministry these past few days, and there were rumors on the Chaos Mirror that Ming Jian Su had resigned from many of her positions and was staying in Dong’e Mountain. Was she accompanying Feng Chiyue in her final moments? The more Feng Yao thought about it, the more likely it seemed.

“Why do you think she’s about to undergo Nirvana?” the Phoenix elder asked, not bothering to look at her.

Feng Yao: “…” Good question, but that was what her intuition told her. Feng Chiyue, the lazy good-for-nothing? No, there was definitely something wrong with her!

“These are the records of the feathered race preserved in our clan. Take a look,” the Phoenix elder said, taking out several jade slips and handing them to her.

Feng Yao wanted to turn and leave, but her feet felt rooted to the spot. She accepted the jade slips respectfully and then said, “Are the assessment questions based on the books in the Wen Qu Treasure Pavilion of the Heavenly Prosperity Department? They’ve revised the historical records many times.” Especially the “Fall of the Phoenix” pact a thousand years ago. However, she didn’t mention those provocative words in front of the elder.

  • The Number One Good-for-Nothing in the Celestial Realm 31p1

    Chapter 31 p1

Seeing Feng Chiyue’s expression, Ming Jian Su knew what she was thinking. Besides, she also didn’t want to look at those annoying documents anymore. So she indulged Feng Chiyue and lay down on the bed with her.

Feng Chiyue held Ming Jian Su tightly, feeling a sense of peace settle over her. Her frustrations and anxieties vanished. Ming Jian Su was her cure.

Ming Jian Su’s heart was also at ease. Although she hadn’t been burdened by paperwork in Asura City, she had still felt restless, as if something was missing. As expected, only in Feng Chiyue’s presence could she truly find peace. Well, she could only accept her fate as a workhorse.

“When Undefeated came back, I asked it to transform into your likeness, but it couldn’t do it. How about this, Elder Sister? Can you refine a puppet that looks exactly like you and leave it with me?” Feng Chiyue’s eyes lit up as a brilliant idea struck her. Ming Jian Su was so busy. She didn’t know what to do with herself.

Ming Jian Su stiffened. Whose fault was it that she was so busy? Her amusement vanished, replaced by anger. “Why don’t you ask Chang Huai to refine it?” she asked, her face flushed.

“I want the best, and it has to be made by you, Elder Sister,” Feng Chiyue said matter-of-factly. She nudged Ming Jian Su and snorted. “It’s your fault for not wanting to use an avatar.”

Ming Jian Su: “…” Was she blaming her now? Her avatar was connected to her true body. If she was with Feng Chiyue, how could she possibly get any work done?! “Absolutely not,” she said firmly, her face serious, determined to crush Feng Chiyue’s ridiculous idea.

Although Feng Chiyue was slightly disappointed, she usually listened to Ming Jian Su in these matters. Seeing that it wouldn’t work, she abandoned the idea. It wasn’t that she liked those stupid puppet humans. It was just that her Elder Sister tended to run away when she was angry. In the past, she would hide in some cave in Dong’e Mountain, but now, she had escalated to fleeing to the battlefield between the Immortal and Demon Realms. Would she cross the Demon Abyss and enter the territory of the demons in the future? The thought filled her with anxiety. She glanced at Ming Jian Su, who had closed her eyes, and called out softly, “Elder Sister.”

Ming Jian Su was still angry and ignored her.

Feng Chiyue frowned. If Ming Jian Su wouldn’t talk, she had other methods. Her hand, resting on Ming Jian Su’s waist, slipped into her robe. When Ming Jian Su’s eyes flew open, Feng Chiyue stopped, a bright smile blooming on her face. “Can you promise me something?” she asked.

Ming Jian Su glared at her, pulling her hand out of her robe and intertwining their fingers. She snorted. “Tell me what it is first.”

“Don’t throw tantrums,” Feng Chiyue said seriously.

Ming Jian Su: “…” Did she throw tantrums? Where had she thrown tantrums? She was always kind and gentle, wasn’t she? She wanted to push Feng Chiyue away, but as her fingers brushed against her skin, she couldn’t bring herself to do it. Instead, she pulled Feng Chiyue closer, holding her tightly. She nibbled Feng Chiyue’s cheek playfully and remained silent.

Feng Chiyue’s eyes sparkled. She took Ming Jian Su’s action as an invitation, but she remembered that she hadn’t finished her important request. “Wait a moment, Elder Sister,” she said softly, then continued, “That includes, but is not limited to, ignoring me, entering seclusion for long periods of time, staying out all night, and running away.” The more she spoke, the more annoyed Ming Jian Su became. Did she have that many bad habits? Thinking about it, she had actually done all of those things, although never for long. But even if she had, why did Feng Chiyue remember them so clearly? And why did she have to list them out one by one?! Ming Jian Su didn’t want to hear it anymore. She leaned forward and silenced Feng Chiyue with a kiss.

Feng Chiyue moaned softly, her mind focused on taking control. Her lengthy complaints vanished into thin air.

Although they now had the Celestial Feather Career Book, it was just a list of names, useful for filling in gaps and correcting errors. It saved them the trouble of investigating, but Ming Jian Su still had to handle some matters personally.

When the sun rose high in the sky, Ming Jian Su used Feng Chiyue’s Chaos Mirror to issue an announcement, requiring the elders of all lineages to compile a list of their wandering immortals, candidates for selection, and officials with formal positions, including their addresses and duties, and submit it within a specified time frame. Those who didn’t register would be considered to have abandoned their positions in the Heavenly Court and would automatically revert to being candidates for selection. Their salaries and benefits would be suspended.

This change affected not only the Celestial Feather Hall, but also the Merit Assessment Hall and the Treasury Hall. The Merit Assessment Hall was responsible for recording the achievements of officials and managing the selection and promotion process, but it had become practically useless due to the chaos in the Celestial Feather Ministry. The Treasury Hall handled the monthly salaries.

In the Heavenly Court, the salaries of all feathered immortals were calculated by the Treasury Hall, and then they would take their vouchers to the Heavenly Prosperity Palace in the Heavenly Prosperity Department to collect their payments. The Treasury Hall was also a mess. Those who had controlled the Celestial Feather Ministry in the past had issued vouchers indiscriminately. Even wandering immortals who were close to them could receive a salary.

    On the Chaos Mirror.

The human immortals were watching the drama unfold, while the feathered immortals were complaining. First, they found it troublesome. Second, it affected their own interests. Regardless of whether they were losing anything, most feathered immortals were opposed to “reform.”

    — What is the Heavenly Court doing? Are they just going to let Feng Chiyue run wild? She’s just a savage Phoenix. What does she know?

    — What about the Heavenly Mechanism Department? What about Si Lu Star Monarch? Someone needs to control Feng Chiyue!

    — Rumor has it that dozens of immortals from Danxue Mountain have disappeared. They might have been killed.

    — I want to apply for reincarnation. I don’t want to be a bird in my next life.

Such drastic changes shocked not only the feathered immortals, but also Que Chen Yi, who was already working tirelessly for the Celestial Feather Ministry. How could they verify the accuracy of the reported numbers? Even if they wanted to investigate, they needed enough manpower. Even with the East Abode Master’s help, they couldn’t possibly handle everything within three days.

Que Chen Yi regretted her impulsive decision to participate in the selection process for the Celestial Feather Ministry eleven thousand times. She could only draw strength from her meager salary, which barely supported her family of dozens. Although she was afraid of seeing Feng Chiyue, she still forced her exhausted body to go to Dong’e Mountain and inquire about the situation.

The East Abode Master was diligently writing at her desk.

The Minister was arguing with other feathered immortals on the Chaos Mirror.

After voicing her concerns, Que Chen Yi lowered her head, anxiously awaiting an answer.

“Don’t worry. I have everything under control,” Ming Jian Su said calmly.

Que Chen Yi nodded absentmindedly, instinctively replying, “The Minister has–” Wait, it wasn’t the Minister who had just spoken. She looked up abruptly. Feng Chiyue didn’t even glance at her. It was the East Abode Master who had spoken, her expression composed, the Minister’s seal resting beside her hand. So this “reform” had nothing to do with the Minister. It was the East Abode Master’s idea?

Had she unwittingly become involved in a major conspiracy? Should she resign and return to her village to farm?

As she left the hall, Que Chen Yi was still distracted, almost bumping into Zhu Wan, who was feeding the birds outside.

“Sorry,” she apologized repeatedly, her head lowered.

Zhu Wan didn’t mind. “It’s alright,” she said. Looking at the exhausted and pitiful Que Chen Yi, she couldn’t help but feel some sympathy. She took out a spiritual fruit and offered it to her. “It’ll be alright,” she said, comforting her. Once you get used to it, nothing can break you.

“Thank you,” Que Chen Yi replied, instinctively drawn to the fruit. She didn’t even look closely at its variety and took a bite. It wasn’t crisp and juicy. Instead, it transformed into pure energy that flowed into her body, cleansing her bloodline. She vaguely heard a high-pitched phoenix cry.

Her previously muddled thoughts cleared instantly! She remembered the fruit’s appearance and instinctively looked back—under the peach tree, Zhu Wan was feeding several plump birds.

That fruit… a Heavenly Phoenix fruit!

It was an almost extinct spiritual fruit, considered sacred to the feathered race. Eating it could enhance their bloodline power and even allow them to transform into a Phoenix! It had once been abundant in Danxue Mountain, but now it was extremely rare. Dong’e Mountain was actually using it to feed those plump birds?! Que Chen Yi wanted to rush over and snatch them all, but she remembered her status and suppressed her envy, dragging her heavy legs away from Dong’e Mountain.

Wasn’t it just work? She could do it! She would definitely not resign!

In the Purple Empyrean Palace of the Heavenly Court.

The immortal officials were also discussing the drastic reforms in the Celestial Feather Ministry. Si Lu Star Monarch’s expression was grim. His colleagues who opposed the reforms glared at him, their gazes like daggers, as it was he who had transferred Feng Chiyue to the Celestial Feather Ministry.

He felt wronged. Who could have predicted that Feng Chiyue would do such things? And now, the East Abode Master was back, the Celestial Mother had left seclusion and declared her support for Feng Chiyue in front of everyone. He couldn’t even get rid of Feng Chiyue now if he wanted to.

“Heavenly Emperor?” the officials asked, waiting for the Heavenly Emperor to speak.

The Heavenly Emperor’s expression was also unpleasant. Knowing that the Great Yin Celestial Mother wouldn’t return to seclusion, he couldn’t bring himself to smile. “The Celestial Feather Ministry will proceed with its reforms. It will not interfere with the main office of the Heavenly Mechanism Department,” he said, his voice heavy.

He had divided the power with the Celestial Mother, securing control of the Heavenly Mechanism Department and keeping the human race under his rule. As for the feathered race… they had been severely weakened by the calamity a thousand years ago. Cutting them off would have the least impact on him. Besides, with the way the Celestial Feather Ministry was reforming, Danxue Mountain wasn’t completely out of the picture. They had even gained an advantage due to their past accumulation and still had a chance to regain control of the ministry.

The Great Yin Celestial Mother ignored the opposition. She stood up, her cold gaze sweeping across the officials. “Issue my decree: The East Abode Master will assist Minister Feng in reforming the Celestial Feather Ministry.”

The officials’ expressions turned serious. They exchanged glances, but no one dared to speak. She was using the East Abode Master’s power to forcefully push through the reforms. She hadn’t mentioned any changes for the human race. Perhaps it was just an internal matter for the feathered race? Even Chang Li, from the Vermilion Bird lineage, hadn’t objected. Why should they risk their necks?

Chang Li indeed hadn’t spoken during the court meeting. It wasn’t until the officials had dispersed that she went to see the Heavenly Emperor alone.

The Heavenly Emperor sighed heavily. “The Celestial Mother holds a grudge because of the Fall of the Phoenix pact a thousand years ago. She intends to favor Phoenix Mountain, and I can’t stop her.” He paused, then added, “But she’s not being unreasonable. She just wants fairness. She won’t hold Danxue Mountain accountable for their past actions.”

Chang Li knew he was just trying to shirk responsibility. She smiled faintly. “Accountable? What did Danxue Mountain do wrong? We acted to end the war between the Immortal and Demon Realms. If the Demon Sovereign demanded me as a captive, I would willingly surrender.”

“You’re right,” the Heavenly Emperor said, agreeing with her. Some wandering immortals who knew the truth still blamed him, but what had he done wrong? Hadn’t he acted for the sake of peace between the two realms? Sacrificing the Phoenix Sovereign was a sacrifice. Weren’t the sacrifices of other soldiers also sacrifices? Why didn’t anyone speak up for them? After a thousand years of justifying his actions, the Heavenly Emperor had forgotten the true cause of the war.

“Why has the Celestial Mother left seclusion?” Chang Li asked.
