Chapter 65: Crisis on a Rainy Night p1

Lin Jiayao had imagined many times how she would leave this camp, this city.

But she never imagined it would be so sudden and hurried, without even time to pack.

In the apocalypse, clothes and sentimental items weren’t essential. Clean water and unspoiled food were.

Memories could be made anytime, as long as the important people were by her side.

The jeep sped through the rainy night. Lin Jiayao, sitting in the passenger seat, looked at her sister.

Her sister’s hair and clothes were completely soaked, water dripping from her ponytail onto the leather seat.

    “Screech—”
    “Whoosh—”

A sudden flash of light. Lin Xiwan slammed on the brakes. Lin Jiayao, without a seatbelt, lurched forward, about to hit the dashboard.

But a hand shot out, protecting her forehead just in time. Lin Xiwan had anticipated the impact and reacted instinctively.

Lin Jiayao gripped her sister’s hand, sat back, and fastened her seatbelt.

She’d almost forgotten about seatbelts; it had been so long since she’d been in a car.

She looked towards the source of the flash of light.

It was hard to see through the rain-streaked windshield.

Only when the light moved to the driver’s side window could Lin Jiayao see clearly. It was a person in a raincoat, holding a flashlight.

    Wang Yi.

He wasn’t alone. Several other figures, men and women, surrounded the jeep in the rain, but they didn’t approach.

Lin Xiwan rolled down the window, ignoring the rain pouring into the car. “What’s the matter?” she asked through the metal grille.

“You’re leaving?” Wang Yi turned off the flashlight, placed it on the windowsill, and wiped the water from his face. “Can’t you stay a few more days? Do you have enough supplies?”

“We’re leaving,” Lin Xiwan said firmly, clearly not wanting to elaborate.

Seeing her cold demeanor, Wang Yi sighed.

He knew that, to this young woman, her sister was everything; the lives of others were likely inconsequential.

“Can you stay and help?” Wang Yi gripped the metal grille on the window, his voice pleading. “The rain might stop tomorrow. Didn’t we always have a few days of rain every summer? Just one or two waves of Biters wandering over…”

Lin Xiwan gripped the steering wheel, avoiding his gaze.

“The rain is too heavy, Uncle Wang.”

The windshield wipers swiped across the glass, a “thud” sound with each pass, but they were useless against the downpour.

She paused before continuing, “You should take them and leave too.”

“Leave… how can I leave? So many people, where would we find enough vehicles? Where would we go? The highway? So many people! So many mouths to feed! Without the camp’s supplies! How many would survive?!”

Wang Yi gripped the metal grille, shaking it violently, his voice rising to a near roar, his emotions spiraling.

But he quickly regained control, taking a deep breath and wiping his rain-soaked face.

“Xiao Lin… please, I beg you, stay and help me for a few days… This heavy rain will stop soon.” Wang Yi’s eyes were red-rimmed, his voice trembling.

Wang Yi had always valued family, both before and after the apocalypse.

After becoming an Awakened, he had used his healing ability to establish this survivor camp, and his ability had protected him from gangs and other camps.

After all, no one could guarantee they wouldn’t be seriously injured or near death, especially with the scarcity of medical supplies.

Even with the deteriorating situation in Baiyan District, he hadn’t abandoned his relatives or the other ordinary people in the camp. He was trying to relocate them, to save as many lives as possible.

But this sudden rainstorm had shattered his plans. The typhoon that had spared Yangzhou City for years had finally arrived, and it was fierce.

Perhaps the torrential rain had caused the upstream aquatic zombies to breach the dam. It was a miracle it had held for five years.

If the rain continued, the entire city might be submerged for days, the remaining supplies washed away, the zombies driven to higher ground…

Either way, Yangzhou City would be uninhabitable.

And Wang Yi couldn’t possibly relocate so many people to a suitable city, especially not in this torrential rain.

He wanted to try, to defend the camp during the storm.

If they survived, he could plan a route and evacuate everyone on a clear day.

But the hope of survival… was slim.

If the Awakened Lin Xiwan stayed, their chances would increase, even if only slightly. That slight increase was crucial to him.

    But his hopes were dashed.

Lin Xiwan wouldn’t leave her sister and gamble on a near-impossible defense.

Escaping Yangzhou City with Lin Jiayao guaranteed their survival for at least tonight. Staying here, with Lin Jiayao, was a death sentence.

“Uncle Wang, how many of the others have left?” Lin Xiwan asked, turning slightly towards him.

By “others,” she meant the other Awakened in the camp.

Wang Yi was silent for a long time before exhaling slowly, releasing his grip on the window, and taking a step back.

    “Open the gate!!!”

He turned and shouted towards the camp entrance, waving his flashlight.

He wiped his face again, looked at Lin Xiwan, and forced a smile.

“Safe travels,” Wang Yi said hoarsely, his final words of farewell, before patting the car door, indicating the gate was open.

He didn’t say how many Awakened had stayed, but Lin Jiayao could guess.

From his earlier outburst, she knew that besides Wang Yi, the number of Awakened remaining was—

    Zero.

No Awakened would willingly stay and face the horde driven towards them by the floodwaters and the aquatic zombies.

Those who could, had fled with their families; those who couldn’t, fled alone.

    Only fools would stay.

Whether they stayed or left, it was a choice based on their own circumstances. Lin Xiwan couldn’t judge Wang Yi, and Wang Yi couldn’t ask her to stay and fight with him.

“Take care,” Lin Xiwan nodded slightly, rolled up the window, put the car in gear, and slowly drove towards the gate.

Along the way, Lin Jiayao saw countless people in raincoats, holding umbrellas, or bare-chested.

Some were explorers, some just family members, old and young, men and women.

They all clutched homemade weapons or firearms wrapped in oilcloth, looking at the car and its occupants with expressions of either apathy or envy.

Whether they were hateful or envious, it was no longer Lin Xiwan’s concern. She had neither the obligation nor the ability to protect everyone.

    “Thump—”

A sudden impact against the driver’s side door. Lin Xiwan slammed on the brakes.

    “Slap, slap, slap—”

Through the heavy rain, Lin Xiwan could only see a hand repeatedly slapping the window.

“Xiaowan, Xiaowan, please help Ayi, okay? I watched you and your sister grow up all these years. Why are you leaving too? He can’t hold on alone, Awan.”

An older woman’s voice, crying and pleading, barely audible above the drumming rain.

Lin Xiwan recognized her. It was Aunt Wang, who managed the bathhouse. She was the one who always brought them extra water and clothes, even carrying a bucket of hot water to their room for Lin Jiayao when Lin Xiwan was away.

Lin Xiwan took a deep breath, put the car in gear again, and silently apologized.

    “Vroom—”

She accelerated, quickly leaving Aunt Wang’s voice behind.

The jeep passed through the camp gate. As they drove away, the large iron gate slowly closed behind them, visible in the rearview mirror.

Lin Xiwan continued driving, turning right down the slope towards the highway.

Lin Jiayao looked at her sister’s profile. Her wet bangs clung to her forehead, water dripping down her cheeks. Lin Jiayao couldn’t tell if it was rain or tears.

She knew it was likely the latter.

Her sister was much more sentimental than her.

Although she appeared cold and aloof, her dreams of being a hero at Survivor’s Light and her tears now betrayed her warm heart.

Sometimes, coldness was just a necessary disguise in the apocalypse.

Lin Jiayao believed that if it weren’t for her, Lin Xiwan might have stayed and fought that impossible battle, trying to save everyone in the camp.

Even though it would likely mean her own death.

“Sister…” Lin Jiayao started to speak, wanting to comfort her, but her sister interrupted.

“Yao, do you think Sister is a deserter?” Lin Xiwan asked, her gaze fixed on the road ahead.

“No, this was the right decision,” Lin Jiayao shook her head. “Sister did the right thing.”

Even from an outsider’s perspective, Lin Xiwan had no obligations to these people; leaving was perfectly reasonable.

“Is that so…” Lin Xiwan murmured, and the only sound in the car was the drumming rain.

After a long silence, Lin Xiwan spoke again. “I want to be stronger.”

She gripped the steering wheel, her gaze fixed on the rain-streaked windshield. “I want to be strong enough to eliminate every last zombie, to prevent these tragedies from happening again, to restore the world to how it was…”

Perhaps triggered by the scene earlier, Lin Xiwan poured out her heart, as if speaking her thoughts aloud would ease the burden.

Then, she exhaled slowly and said with a self-deprecating chuckle, “A childish dream, isn’t it?”

“It’s not childish,” Lin Jiayao said, shaking her head. “It’s… admirable.”

She genuinely admired her sister’s dream.

Even if it seemed unrealistic, at least she had such a dream.

If no one in this apocalyptic world had such a dream, then the world would truly be lost.

But Lin Jiayao herself didn’t have such grand ambitions. She only wanted to protect her sister.

    “THUMP—”
    “Screech—”

A sudden, massive impact from the left side sent the jeep skidding to the right, almost overturning.

    “Roar—”

    The roar of a Sprinter.

Both Lin Xiwan and Lin Jiayao instantly recognized the sound.

Had the horde already arrived? They hadn’t even gotten far from the camp…

It seemed the camp wouldn’t last the night. Even if Lin Xiwan had stayed, even if all the Awakened in the city gathered there, they couldn’t defend it.

    Humans tired; zombies didn’t.

Lin Jiayao had seen hordes like tidal waves; this was beyond the defensive capabilities of a small camp.

    “Damn it!”

Lin Xiwan regained control of the jeep and accelerated.

But the roars of zombies were now close behind.

“Yaoyao! Get the guns from the trunk!” Lin Xiwan shouted, pushing the jeep to its limits.

She couldn’t worry about her sister’s mobility now; the slightest mistake, and they would be overtaken.

She knew her sister wasn’t experienced with guns, having only read about them in books and asked her some questions, but there was no other choice. Even killing a single zombie increased their chances of survival.

Lin Jiayao quickly unbuckled her seatbelt, reclined the seat fully, and crawled into the back.

To reduce weight, the back seats had been removed, creating a large space connected to the trunk for storing supplies.

She quickly found a package wrapped in oilcloth and felt the cold metal of the firearms within.

Two Type 95 rifles, seemingly purchased from the military base, well-maintained and almost new.

Besides the rifles, there was also a box of ammunition and magazines.

    “THUMP!!!”

    “THUMP!”

    “THUMP!!!”

    “Crack—”

    “Roar—”

Countless zombies swarmed the jeep, slamming against the doors.

Some even grabbed onto the metal grilles on the windows, smashing their heads against the glass, splattering it with blood and pus.

The grilles, meant to protect against zombies, were now helping them climb onto the car.

Lin Jiayao even saw cracks appearing on the windows.

“Sister, open the back windows!” Lin Jiayao shouted, moving closer to the ammunition box and sitting with her back against the driver’s seat.

Without hesitation, Lin Xiwan pressed the buttons on the console.

She had to focus on driving; stopping or overturning meant certain death.

    “Click.”
    “Click—”

Lin Jiayao expertly disengaged the safety and chambered a round. The magazines were fully loaded, thankfully.

But chambering the round took effort.

Compared to the zombie bodies she controlled, her own body was far too weak.

Leaning against the seat, back-to-back with her sister, she aimed at the zombies now reaching through the bent grilles.

She pressed the stock against her shoulder, held her breath, and aimed at a Biter clinging to the window.

    “Rat-tat-tat-tat—”

The recoil jolted her shoulder, but the soft seat absorbed some of the impact.

Even so, it took four shots to kill the Biter.

Shooting upwards from a moving vehicle wasn’t easy, and the jeep was shaking violently, the zombie’s head constantly moving.

And, most importantly, she hadn’t fired a gun with her human body before; her firearms proficiency had been honed while controlling Mask with its bone spikes.

    “Bang—”
    “Ding—”

The muzzle flash and the sound of bullets ricocheting off the metal grilles alerted Lin Xiwan.

Although she couldn’t see her sister, she noticed her poor aim – she heard the shots, but none hit their targets.

The accuracy wasn’t ideal, but at least she was firing.

“Don’t worry, Yaoyao, take your time… Just like playing a game.”

Just as Lin Xiwan spoke, a loud “thump” echoed from the roof.

    The metal dented inwards.

A Sprinter had climbed onto the roof!

    “Shit…”

Lin Xiwan’s hands, gripping the steering wheel, were slick with sweat. Her heart sank.

A Sprinter was much stronger than a Biter. It wouldn’t be long before it smashed through the roof!

    “Rat-tat—Rat-tat—Rat-tat-tat—”

But Lin Jiayao remained calm, seemingly finding her rhythm.

Several well-aimed bursts took down the Biters clinging to the rear windows. Then, she raised her rifle and aimed at the roof.

She removed her left hand from the handguard and placed it on the side, her fingernails touching the chassis, activating Bone Spike Lurker. She waited for the next impact.

    “Thump—”

The roof dented again. But this time, the moment she heard the sound, Lin Jiayao adjusted her aim and fired.

    “Bang—”

    A single, crisp gunshot.

A bullet hole appeared in the roof, followed by the sound of something rolling and then falling.

    “Rat-tat—”

Lin Jiayao fired a few more random shots at the roof, making the single shot that killed the Sprinter seem less suspicious.

    “Drip, drip—”

Rainwater dripped through the dented roof and the bullet holes, but there were no more impacts.

    “Vroom—”

The jeep finally reached the main road, and Lin Xiwan accelerated to 120km/h.

As their speed increased, the horde fell behind, the zombies unable to keep up.

Following this road, they would soon reach the highway toll station. The resort was located near the city’s edge, only about five kilometers from the highway.

After shaking off the horde, Lin Xiwan slowed down.

    Chapter 64: Typhoon Night p2

The obese zombie had controlled so many insects, and yet its intelligence remained at an infant’s level.

To reach human-level intelligence, she would need a seven-story-tall structure of densely packed holes, filled with insects, countless glowing green tentacles within, absorbing a mountain of brains…

Just imagining the scene made Lin Jiayao’s scalp crawl.

Could such a zombie truly exist? Or… did it already?

That would be beyond the realm of ordinary biology… Lin Jiayao wasn’t even sure if she could maintain her self-awareness against the mental assault from such a dense cluster of holes.

The nutrients needed to hatch these eggs were human or zombie brains and blood crystals, the tentacles on her left hand serving as the feeding channel.

And her current vision was that of an insect; she could share its perspective. Each insect was like an extra eye.

As for strength, defense, and other physical attributes, she didn’t feel much of a change.

But she could sense that her skin would eventually transform into that translucent, gelatinous material.

And it was highly likely that her body would bloat like the obese zombie.

    The thought made her shudder.

She knew another type of Hive Zombie: the Wailer, which also had the honeycomb vocal structure.

But their evolutionary paths were completely different.

Now, she could only try and find another Hive Zombie; she didn’t want to continue down this path.

Using her insect vision, Lin Jiayao reached into her mouth and retrieved the remaining blood crystal.

It looked like any other blood crystal. She put it into the safehouse.

    Then, she stood up.

The tentacles on her left arm coiled into a ball, like a glowing green hand.

Ready, Lin Jiayao looked towards the extraction point.

    「Extraction Time 00:19:12」
    【Extraction Point: 0.2km】

    200 meters, nineteen minutes remaining.

    More than enough time.

    But Lin Jiayao hesitated.

She had achieved her initial goal, evolving into a Hive Zombie. Now she just needed to extract and choose an evolution.

    But…

There were still so many blood crystals near those corpses!

    And so many guns!

    The thought was too tempting.

Just a little bit… I’ll just scavenge a little and be back in time.

Lin Jiayao ran towards the collapsed building.

Swarms of glowing green insects flew from her eye sockets, buzzing ahead, scouting the area.

    The collapsed building wasn’t far.

To avoid encountering any reinforcements from that team, she sent the insects to scout first.

The American night was dark. Zombies from other districts, attracted by the noise, were already scavenging for blood crystals in the ruins.

She even saw a few that had stopped to evolve.

    No reinforcements.

Confirming the area was safe, Lin Jiayao ran towards the glowing red spots.

Blood crystals! Blood crystals! Blood crystals!

She quickly gathered all the blood crystals, using the insects to carry the smaller ones.

She discarded the pistol from her safehouse and filled it with four blood crystals.

The full safehouse gave her a sense of immense satisfaction.

    Then, her attention shifted.

The insects continued to collect blood crystals, while she went to the human corpses.

    “Buzz—”

Emitting a loud noise to scare away the zombies feeding on the bodies, she started collecting their ammo vests and putting them on.

She also gathered their rifles, seven in total, lined up neatly.

She couldn’t carry them all, so she chose the ones with the most loaded magazines.

    Guns were useless without bullets.

And she would mainly be storing them in the warehouse anyway, for use in China.

Finding 7.62x39mm AK rounds or 5.56x45mm NATO rounds in China wasn’t easy; Chinese rifles used different calibers.

She could only carry four at most. Unable to discern which were the best modifications, she chose the coolest-looking ones.

If they looked cool, their performance should be decent.

    She quickly made her choices.

Two fully modified M4A1s with suppressors.

An HK416 decked out with beige attachments, like a Christmas tree.

A silver-gray AK74M with white handguards and a black and white stock, almost unrecognizable as an AK.

She chose them because the first three were NATO caliber, using the same ammunition.

As for why the 5.45x39mm AK…

    Because it looked cool.

    “Rat-tat-tat-tat-tat—”

Suddenly, one of her insects detected distinct muzzle flashes in the distance.

And through Bone Spike Lurker, she heard the controlled bursts of rifle fire.

    Had their reinforcements finally arrived?

Glancing at the remaining eight minutes on the extraction timer, Lin Jiayao didn’t dare linger. She slung the backpacks and ammo vests over her shoulders, her left tentacles gripping the three NATO-caliber rifles, her right hand cradling the beloved AK, and ran towards the extraction point, fully loaded.

Along the way, she tried injecting herself with one of the adrenaline syringes she’d found, but it didn’t seem to have any effect on the zombie body.

The extra weight slowed her down considerably. She had to discard the two heavy bulletproof vests and helmet to make it in time.

And behind her trailed a swarm of red lights, like fireflies, carrying blood crystals.

    A bountiful harvest!

She had never been so wealthy during an extraction.

Reaching the designated building, entering the basement, Lin Jiayao arrived at the extraction point with just a minute to spare.

    Down to the wire!

    「Extracting in: 8.8」

Seeing the green extraction icon with the escape symbol light up, Lin Jiayao finally relaxed.

The thrill of that last-minute scavenging spree was greater than all her previous successful extractions combined.

Calming herself, she waited for the countdown to end.

Her consciousness entered the dark space.

She saw the illusory form of the evolved little girl zombie, standing before her.

The normally terrifying appearance was somewhat softened by its current attire.

It was covered in layers of ammo vests, two tactical helmets with night vision goggles on its head.

Its left tentacles held three rifles, its right hand another, and the swarm of glowing green insects buzzing around it each carried a blood crystal.

Lin Jiayao moved the four blood crystals from the safehouse to the warehouse and then started stacking the smaller crystals in the safehouse until it was full.

In the end, her safehouse contained ten blood crystals!

500g each; she now had 5kg of blood crystals – she was rich!

Then, she tried to move the vests, helmets, and rifles to the warehouse.

To her surprise, a fully modified rifle required a 5×2 space. The AK was even larger, 6×2.

She decided to leave the AK74M with the little girl zombie; it took up too much space.

The ammo vests also took up a lot of space, forcing her to dismantle them.

The vests were mostly AVS MBAVs with 3-BAND side straps, AVS M4 triple pouches, M4 quick-release pouches, LAP ballistic groin protectors, grenade pouches, and 9x7x3 GP utility pouches – quite bulky.

After removing the groin protectors, the vests, which had occupied 3×4 spaces, now only took up 3×3.

Lin Jiayao carefully organized her warehouse, even stuffing magazines and blood crystals into the various pouches to save space.

Finally, she managed to fit three rifles, four ammo vests, and one helmet into the warehouse.

And this was with the magazines, blood crystals, bullets, and grenades already inside the pouches; the warehouse was now more than half full.

If she didn’t have to leave a set of equipment for the zombie, she could probably fit even more.

It was like playing a game of Tetris.

After checking for anything she might have missed, Lin Jiayao, carrying half a warehouse of weapons and equipment, returned to her body.

    “Boom—”

The moment she returned to reality, a clap of thunder startled her. She remembered the rainstorm in Yangzhou City.

Hadn’t this storm been going on for a bit too long?

    Was it a typhoon?

Looking at the darkened sky outside, the excitement from her successful haul faded, replaced by worry.

Why hadn’t her sister returned yet?

As she pondered this, she felt a wave of dizziness.

She had been logged in for a full five hours, enduring two near-death experiences, a battle, and a zombie evolution.

This had taken a toll on her mental state.

Fighting the dizziness, she opened the system’s evolution interface.

    「Please retain your evolution」
「1、【Hive Skin Lv.1 (Purple): Generates honeycomb-like holes on your skin for insect incubation, allowing you to cultivate an insect swarm】」
「2、【Neural Synapses Lv.1 (Purple): Your organs develop mutated tendrils, allowing you to feed on or control others】」
「3、【Vigor Lv.1 (Gray): Increases your mental and physical recovery speed】」

Seeing the third option, Lin Jiayao’s eyes lit up.

An ability called [Vigor]. Just like the [Robust] evolution she had encountered earlier, it was a simple name and a gray rarity.

But right now, this was exactly what she needed.

She immediately dismissed the first option, [Hive Skin]. The thought of those black holes made her skin crawl.

The second wasn’t very useful either; she already had the more potent and undetectable spores for mental control.

It was a pity she didn’t get the ability to control zombies through pheromones and sound; she might have considered that.

The third evolution was clearly the best choice.

She needed to improve her mental strength and recovery speed.

After making her choice, Lin Jiayao felt a tingling sensation on her scalp, like a jolt of electricity, refreshing her mind.

The dizziness subsided, and she felt her mental strength returning faster than usual.

For now, she didn’t have to worry about her mental state.

But now, more than her own mental state, she was worried about her sister.

She’d been logged in for five hours, and her sister still hadn’t returned?

    This wasn’t normal.

Looking at the torrential rain outside, Lin Jiayao was almost certain a typhoon was coming.

She sat up and moved to the edge of the bed.

Using the armrest of the wheelchair for support, she slowly moved into the chair.

She wheeled herself to the door and opened it.

She was no longer afraid of going out alone.

Stepping into the villa’s living room, she frowned.

The rain had flooded the living room, even soaking the wheels of her wheelchair. This was one of the things she hated most.

    “Vroom—Vroom—”

Lin Jiayao, her hand on the wheelchair’s armrest, heard the sound of a car engine.

    A car?

She wheeled herself to the villa entrance and saw a jeep speeding towards her through the rain, its headlights blinding.

    Was it her sister?

    “Vroom—”
    “Screech—”

The jeep, with metal grilles on its windows and windshield, came to a sudden stop, splashing water everywhere.

    “Thump—”

The door opened, and Lin Jiayao saw her sister running towards her through the rain.

    “Sis—”

Before Lin Jiayao could greet her, her sister quickly touched her face and then rushed inside.

    “Huh?”

Her sister’s urgency surprised Lin Jiayao.

She didn’t even have time to say a word?

Lin Xiwan quickly returned, carrying a large, black plastic bag, which she hurriedly put in the jeep’s trunk.

Soaked to the bone, she finally returned to the villa entrance, stood beside Lin Jiayao, leaning against the door, and catching her breath.

“What’s wrong, Sister?” Lin Jiayao wheeled herself closer and took her sister’s cold, wet hand. “You’re drenched.”

“Huff… huff… Yaoyao,” Lin Xiwan said, tying her wet hair back with a hair tie. “We have to leave.”

“Leave? So soon?” Lin Jiayao was surprised.

She had only figured out the zombie distribution in one city and hadn’t even surveyed the highway route yet.

    Leaving now was too dangerous.

Unless… staying here was even more dangerous.

“We have to go,” Lin Xiwan said seriously, her voice low. “It’s been raining all day, and Yangzhou City is flooded. The Yangjiang River has overflowed, and the water level is still rising.”

    “This…” Lin Jiayao’s eyes widened.

Without regular maintenance, the city’s sewers, clogged with zombie corpses and debris, often flooded when it rained.

But this typhoon seemed to be worse than she had imagined.

The river had already risen to ground level?

This meant the aquatic zombies’ range had expanded, and the land zombies, to avoid them, would be moving to higher ground.

And the resort villa was on high ground.

It would definitely be affected by the zombie migration.

And the rising water level meant even more terrifying amphibious zombies would be coming ashore, heading towards human settlements.

“We’ll take the highway. I checked; it’s not flooded. We’ll head north before the typhoon hits.”

    “Okay.”

Lin Jiayao nodded, understanding the urgency.

“Ready?” Lin Xiwan asked, extending her hand.

“Wait.” Lin Jiayao quickly wheeled herself back into the room, grabbed the cloak her sister had given her from under the pillow, and put it on.

She had to take her sister’s gift with her.

As for everything else… she would leave it to time.

Lin Jiayao took one last look at the room she had lived in for four years and then, without looking back, wheeled herself towards her sister.

Lin Xiwan helped her put on the hood and then, carrying her through the rain, placed her in the passenger seat.

Then, she ran back, grabbed the wheelchair, folded it, and put it in the trunk.

Finally, soaked to the bone, Lin Xiwan got into the driver’s seat, checked the locks, and looked at her sister.

    “Let’s go, Yao.”

    “Okay, Sis.”

Leaving this place filled Lin Xiwan with a nervous excitement, her hands trembling, partly from the cold rain.

She brushed her wet hair away from her face, stroked her sister’s forehead, and kissed her.

Only then did she feel the warmth and strength returning to her body.

    “Vroom—”

Gripping the steering wheel, Lin Xiwan pressed the accelerator and drove into the blinding rain, towards an uncertain future.

  • Sickly Girl Doesn’t Die in Zombie Simulator 64p1

    Chapter 64: Typhoon Night p1

The zombie in front of Lin Jiayao wandered a short distance and then stopped.

Unsure of its intentions, Lin Jiayao also stopped, observing.

After a while, the zombie turned and lumbered back, no longer searching for its attacker.

    This…

It seemed all those brains inside its body hadn’t improved its intelligence.

Lin Jiayao even began to doubt if evolving into this type of Hive Zombie actually enhanced mental strength.

As it returned to the corpse, Lin Jiayao crouched down, placed her rifle on the ground, and took out an M67 grenade.

Looking at the round grenade in her hand, she felt a surge of nervousness.

Although she had read about how to use grenades in many military manuals, this was her first time actually using one.

To be safe, she decided to practice.

She had two more grenades anyway; a test run wouldn’t hurt.

While the zombie feasted on the corpse, Lin Jiayao sat cross-legged on the ground, examining the grenade.

She held the grenade and the safety lever in her left hand, pushed open the spring-loaded safety clip, then hooked her right index finger around the ring pull and pulled out the safety pin.

Looking around, there wasn’t a good target, so she threw the grenade towards a few black Sprinters collecting blood crystals on the ground.

    “Whoosh—”

As the grenade left her hand, the safety lever sprang off. The round, green grenade spun through the air towards the Sprinters.

It landed on the ground without exploding.

Just as Lin Jiayao thought it was a dud, a few seconds later, it detonated with a loud “BOOM.”

The explosion sent shrapnel flying. The closest black Sprinters were thrown back by the blast.

Shrapnel embedded itself in various parts of their bodies, some even in their heads.

But besides making them look even more mangled, it didn’t seem to cause any significant damage.

Shrapnel propelled by an explosion would incapacitate a human.

But zombies didn’t feel pain; as long as it wasn’t a fatal injury, it didn’t matter.

After the explosion, the surrounding zombies continued searching for blood crystals, still following the Hive Zombie’s commands, oblivious to the detonation.

And the obese Hive Zombie continued to feast on the corpse, simply emitting a buzzing sound, sending a few Sprinters towards the explosion site, seemingly unwilling to investigate itself.

Even among zombies, there were lazy ones?

Having tested the grenade’s power, Lin Jiayao nodded to herself.

Although the fragmentation grenade could only kill a Sprinter at point-blank range, this was enough for her.

A grenade detonating inside that zombie would definitely turn its internal organs into mush.

She took out the second M67, repeated the steps, holding it in her left hand, pin and clip removed, safety lever held down, ready to throw.

With the grenade primed, she picked up her rifle in her right hand and stood up.

She walked directly towards the Hive Zombie, its back to her.

As she approached, the zombie seemed to notice another zombie behind it. It struggled to straighten up, glanced back, and then continued eating.

    “Buzz—”

A mental command to leave entered Lin Jiayao’s mind, urging her to turn back.

But she easily resisted the weak mental suggestion, walked up to the zombie, and pressed the rifle against its back.

The silenced barrel sank into its gelatinous skin, even touching a brain inside, the sensation transmitted through the rifle to Lin Jiayao’s hand, making her shudder.

    “Buzz—”

The zombie finally sensed something was wrong. The countless black holes on its upper body widened, and swarms of glowing green insects emerged.

    It even started to stand.

At that moment, Lin Jiayao pulled the trigger.

    “Rat-tat-tat-tat—”

The bullets ripped through its skin. Lin Jiayao adjusted her aim slightly, widening the hole.

    “BUZZZZ—”

A piercing buzz resonated in Lin Jiayao’s mind, almost making her drop the grenade.

    I can’t wait any longer.

Swarms of emerald green insects, dripping viscous mucus, landed on her face, some even trying to burrow into her eyes.

And the nearby Sprinters, seemingly alerted, turned and charged towards her.

While she could still see, Lin Jiayao dropped the rifle and punched the oozing wound with her left hand, the grenade still clutched in her fist.

    “Squish—”

Before the pus could seal the wound, she shoved her hand inside, deep into the viscous fluid, and then released the grenade.

    “Click—”

The safety lever sprang off within the mass of brains and pus. A Sprinter lunged at Lin Jiayao, biting down on the back of her neck and shaking its head violently.

But it couldn’t drag her away. Lin Jiayao’s left hand was stuck inside the obese zombie – the wound had closed, sealing her hand within.

Her vision blurred, her eyes being devoured, and she gradually lost control of her body.

She could even feel insects crawling into her ears, gnawing their way towards her brain.

    Is this the end?

    “BOOM—”

    “Splat—”

Lin Jiayao didn’t hear or see anything; she only sensed a massive vibration through Bone Spike Lurker.

She knew the grenade had detonated.

Lin Jiayao stood before the massive Hive Zombie, her left hand trapped in its back.

Compared to the Sprinter behind her and the obese zombie in front, her body was incredibly small.

And insects continued to swarm her, crawling into her eyes, ears, nose, and mouth – a horrifying sight.

A muffled explosion echoed from within the Hive Zombie’s translucent belly.

Its body swelled, the brains inside turned into a yellowish-white mush by the blast.

It now resembled a giant, humanoid bowl of tofu pudding, brain matter and pus churning within.

The Sprinter that had been biting her suddenly stopped and turned away.

And the insects inside her mouth and ears stopped their gnawing, seemingly dead.

The obese zombie collapsed, raising a cloud of dust, Lin Jiayao falling with it.

Its honeycomb-like neck and shoulders detached from its body.

Like a deflated balloon, the zombie’s bloated body spewed its contents, pushing the detached head and shoulders away.

The honeycomb structure had been like a lid, holding the body together. Now, without the lid, the contents spilled out.

    Its true form was revealed.

A creature resembling a squid, but not quite like any earthly creature.

A small, atrophied black head served as a mouth, a thick black neck below connecting to a shell-like mantle riddled with holes.

And beneath the mantle were glowing green tentacles, now severed and withering.

Lin Jiayao lay on the ground, unable to move.

But she knew she had survived.

Otherwise, she would be in the consciousness space, not lying here, barely alive.

With her spine severed, she couldn’t control her body.

She mentally retrieved a blood crystal from the safehouse, willed it to appear near her mouth, and then, with great effort, nudged her head and took a bite.

The blood crystal grew warm in her mouth, the heat spreading through her mind, like a burning poker searing her soul.

As she endured the pain, her bones rapidly regenerated. Within minutes, she could move her fingers.

She immediately put the blood crystal back into the safehouse before trying to sit up.

Only after securing her valuables did she feel a sense of safety.

She reached out, her hand brushing against soft, gelatinous skin, and then her new rifle.

But the rifle was coated in hardened mucus; she couldn’t even chamber a round.

She touched her eye sockets; her fingers passed through empty space. Her eyes were gone.

She could only rely on Bone Spike Lurker to detect any other living beings within a hundred meters.

Now, she finally understood the benefit of Lv.3 Bone Spike Lurker; even without eyes, she could “see” the terrain within fifty meters.

    Fragile eyes were unreliable.

I should have chosen Lv.3 Bone Spike Lurker…

Not only her eyes, but also her left arm was gone, ripped off in the explosion while trapped inside the obese zombie.

Now, she could only crawl, using her right hand, towards the zombie’s corpse.

She didn’t care how disgusting it was; she couldn’t see, hear, or even properly feel anything.

But after searching for a long time, she couldn’t find anything resembling a blood crystal.

She started circling the corpse, expanding her search.

Soon, she found a different path, softer than the surrounding ground, seemingly paved with viscous fluid.

Was it the mucus from inside the zombie?

Following the trail of mucus, she found a slightly harder, leathery object.

Touching it, she felt honeycomb-like holes, and something small crumbled and fell off.

Was this… the detached head and shoulders of the zombie?

Lin Jiayao searched the surrounding area; she had a feeling the blood crystal was nearby.

Soon, she found a fist-sized, hard object.

Touching it, she felt a warmth, unusually distinct despite her dulled senses.

The blood crystal… I found it.

    But… only one?

Such a large zombie, and so highly evolved, why only one blood crystal?

Lin Jiayao, unable to see, didn’t notice that this blood-red crystal was different from the others she had seen.

Within its translucent depths were several thin, glowing green tentacles.

The tentacles moved freely within the crystal, like they were swimming.

Although she couldn’t see, Lin Jiayao could still access the extraction point and time.

Plenty of time, and the extraction point was close.

She decided to get closer before consuming the crystal.

The system’s designated extraction points were always safe, places where she wouldn’t be disturbed, even during long login sessions.

That eight-person team’s equipment was too advanced; she had to be wary of reinforcements.

If they arrived while she was evolving, she would be doomed.

Clutching the warm blood crystal, Lin Jiayao crawled towards the extraction point. Halfway there, she could stand again.

Reaching a spot near the extraction point, she found a place to lean against, a solid surface that felt like either a wall or glass, and sat down.

She put the blood crystal into her mouth.

She wasn’t worried about consuming too much; she knew from her first evolution with Mask that there was a limit to how much a body could absorb at once.

Any excess would remain in her mouth.

As the blood crystal melted in her mouth, a burning sensation spreading through her body, Lin Jiayao lowered her head and fell asleep.

In her sleep, she had a short, strange dream.

Her perspective fragmented into countless small windows, each showing a different location, like multi-boxing in an online game, each account in a different area.

But then, everything went black, and she saw only a single, writhing, glowing green tentacle, viscous mucus dripping from its tip.

Her perspective followed the falling mucus into an endless abyss of darkness.

As darkness consumed everything, a sense of suffocation enveloped her, and she woke up.

Instinctively, she reached up to touch her eyes, wanting to see if they had regenerated.

    But her hand froze midway.

Because she saw her hand move.

It was a strange sensation, difficult to describe.

She could rotate her perspective 360 degrees, even seeing her entire body from an external viewpoint.

And in this view, she saw her evolved form… a sight that made her shudder.

Suddenly, Mask seemed pleasing to the eye, the head-spider not so terrifying.

She was still in the little girl’s body.

But her empty eye sockets had changed.

Countless tiny, honeycomb-like holes now covered the insides of her eye sockets, extending to the corners of her eyes, their depths unsettling.

Besides the holes in her eye sockets, her severed neck had also regenerated, the skin now a translucent, gelatinous material, revealing the vertebrae beneath.

The most significant change was her missing left arm.

It had been completely replaced by a mass of glowing green tentacles, moving according to her will.

She could sense that, if she wanted to, she could use these tentacles to connect to brains.

And she now understood the basic abilities of a Hive Zombie.

The honeycomb-like holes in her eye sockets weren’t just for emitting the strange noises and pheromones that controlled other zombies, but also for producing eggs.

These eggs, which she could control, each slightly enhanced her mental strength and processing speed.

    But the enhancement was minimal.

  • Sickly Girl Doesn’t Die in Zombie Simulator 63

    Chapter 63: An Unlucky Start

America(United States of America), the pre-apocalypse world’s strongest nation, the sole superpower.

Lin Jiayao didn’t judge the country’s past stance or actions; after the apocalypse, the entire world had changed.

She just wondered what the situation was like in America. Although she had never been there, she knew enough not to be completely in the dark.

    She chose Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Although Milwaukee was the largest city in Wisconsin, compared to other more prosperous areas in America, it was a relatively small place.

    “Splash—”
    “Splash—”

Before Lin Jiayao could open her eyes in the darkness, she heard the sound of water.

    Water?

She quickly opened her eyes. Everything was a shade of dark gray or black, the world tinted crimson.

Although it was daytime in China, it was still night in America, across the Pacific.

It seemed she had logged into a zombie with night vision.

Testing her limbs, she felt the familiar connection.

A zombie with normal limbs, good.

Lin Jiayao controlled the body to stand up, intending to use her height to survey the surroun—

    dings…

    Hmm?

Standing, she realized something was wrong.

Why was her perspective still so low?

Looking down, even in her crimson-tinted vision, she could tell these hands were too small.

The hands of a child, about ten years old.

Unfortunately, she didn’t sense any other abilities. It seemed she had logged into an ordinary Biter.

    A system prompt appeared.

「Inherited Evolutions: [Blood Rage Lv.1] [Bone Spike Lurker Lv.1] [Bone Regeneration Lv.1]」

She seemed to have inherited the most basic bone and flesh-related evolutions from her main body.

Unfortunately, these were abilities Mask could easily counter.

Lin Jiayao dismissed her slight disappointment and looked around.

She seemed to be in a harbor at night, the shore and water filled with various boats.

She was standing inside a yacht, rocking gently with the waves.

Seeing her surroundings, she decided to move away from the harbor.

Aquatic zombies were more difficult to deal with than those on land – they were much larger and stronger.

Leaving the harbor, she reached a road and checked the extraction point.

    「Extraction Time 4:59:33」
    【Extraction Point: 11km】

The extraction point was far, especially for an ordinary Biter, but the time allotted was generous.

Perhaps she could observe the local zombies along the way.

    “Buzz—”

Just as she was about to head towards the extraction point, a strange buzzing sound resonated in her mind.

And she felt an urge to move towards a certain direction.

    This is…

    Suddenly, realization dawned.

Was this a call from some kind of Hive Zombie?

Although it was quite far, and slightly off course from the extraction point, Lin Jiayao decided it was worth investigating.

It would be a waste to simply extract with an ordinary Biter body.

She changed direction and jogged towards the source of the buzzing.

She couldn’t run any faster; this small zombie body was limited.

Passing a store, she glanced at her reflection in the window.

She couldn’t tell her eye or hair color in her current vision, but she could confirm that she was indeed in a little girl’s body.

The girl’s dirty, blood-matted hair hung down her back, clinging to her blackened dress.

There was a gruesome wound on her neck, as if someone had taken an axe to it. The skin and flesh around the wound were curled outwards, dry, seemingly years old.

Other than that, it was a relatively intact Biter, much better than the one she’d controlled on the first day, whose back had broken almost immediately.

As Lin Jiayao got closer, the buzzing grew louder.

She could even feel the strange, almost tinnitus-like sound affecting her mind.

If she lost focus, her body would involuntarily move towards the source of the buzzing. She had to concentrate to maintain control.

    This attraction is terrifying…

Lin Jiayao focused on moving forward, not daring to relax her mind.

If she were an ordinary zombie, she would have been drawn in without resistance.

This explained why she hadn’t seen any other Biters along the way.

Finally, after turning a corner, she heard sounds in the otherwise quiet city.

A cacophony of noise and zombie growls.

But it was still too far. Although she could hear it, it was beyond the range of her Lv.1 Bone Spike Lurker.

To be safe, Lin Jiayao slowed down, extended her right hand, placed her skinless index finger on a nearby wall, and activated Bone Spike Lurker.

Sensing for sounds, she continued forward.

But she quickly frowned, retracted her hand, and deactivated Bone Spike Lurker.

It was too noisy, too many vibrations; she couldn’t discern anything useful.

    “Boom—————”

A massive explosion rocked the ground nearby. Lin Jiayao’s attention snapped towards the source.

In her vision, a terrifying explosion erupted from the middle floors – around the twentieth floor – of a high-rise building not far away.

A huge hole was blown into the building, a mushroom cloud of fire and smoke rising into the air.

The shockwave shattered all the surrounding windows. Even Lin Jiayao was pushed back a few steps by the blast.

    What was going on?

Such a massive explosion was definitely man-made.

But wasn’t this a zombie-infested area? Why would anyone detonate such a large explosive here?

Before she could figure it out, her eyes widened.

The smoke-filled building was tilting… towards her.

    It’s collapsing!

    “Damn it!”

Lin Jiayao cursed inwardly and turned, running with all her might.

Logging into a weak Biter was bad enough, but at least she had heard the call of a Hive Zombie.

But before she could even find it, she’d encountered a massive explosion.

And now the building was collapsing, towards her.

    The unluckiest start ever!

    “Boom—”

    “Rumble—”

Another rumbling sound came from behind. Lin Jiayao glanced back and then quickly lowered her head, activating Blood Rage.

    A second explosion!

Her already crimson-tinted vision became even brighter, everything glowing red.

At the same time, her strength surged, red veins bulging on her thin arms and legs.

She didn’t care what happened to this zombie body; if she didn’t run, she wouldn’t have to worry about anything.

After the second explosion, not only the middle section, but the lower floors of the building also began to collapse, the entire structure falling towards her like dominoes.

    “Crash—”

    “Boom, boom, boom—”

A deafening crash shook the ground as a massive chunk of debris hit Lin Jiayao’s back, sending her flying.

As she landed, more debris rained down, burying her.

Lin Jiayao’s consciousness didn’t fade, nor did she feel any pain.

She knew most of her bones were broken. If it weren’t for Blood Rage, she wouldn’t be able to move.

At least my head is intact…

Lin Jiayao didn’t waste any time. Using the last of her Blood Rage boost, she frantically wriggled free from the largest piece of debris. Then, an overwhelming wave of weakness washed over her.

It was so intense she felt that if she closed her eyes, she would die. And her crimson vision faded; even her night vision was gone.

Fortunately, she could still control the system.

She opened the safehouse. A blood crystal materialized.

With effort, she opened her mouth and licked the crystal. The normally hard crystal, now like butter touched by a hot knife, melted slightly against her tongue.

The dissolving crystal flowed into her body, rapidly repairing the damage.

It was a good thing she had inherited [Bone Regeneration Lv.1]; otherwise, with her shattered bones, she would have been stuck here for five hours until the extraction automatically failed.

Lin Jiayao lay there, waiting for her bones to regenerate.

After about five minutes, she heard the buzzing again.

    That zombie was still alive?

Fighting the urge to crawl towards it, she put the remaining blood crystal back into the safehouse and looked back.

Even after five minutes, the air was still thick with dust.

The collapsed building had completely buried the street, blocking the road.

Another five minutes passed, and Lin Jiayao felt her bones had almost fully regenerated. She tentatively moved and found she could stand.

She could move, but the buzzing in her mind was now intermittent.

    Was the Hive Zombie injured?

Lin Jiayao slowly got up and walked towards the source of the buzzing.

Although her bones had regenerated, her flesh was mangled, her dress clinging to chunks of meat.

She looked even more like a zombie now.

Climbing over the debris would take too long, so she chose to detour through the adjacent street.

After about ten minutes, following the intermittent buzzing, she reached the collapsed building.

Along the way, she saw countless zombie corpses, most of them burned or dismembered.

They seemed to have fallen from the building during the explosion and collapse.

No wonder she hadn’t seen any zombies along the way; they had all been gathered here?

Had someone deliberately lured the zombies into the building with a Hive Zombie and then detonated explosives?

This seemed like the most plausible explanation.

If that were the case, someone would be here to clean up the battlefield soon.

    She had to hurry.

Ignoring the scattered blood crystals, Lin Jiayao headed straight for the ruins, her only goal the Hive Zombie.

The building was now a mountain of rubble. The closer she got, the stronger the buzzing became.

The Hive Zombie was trapped beneath the debris.

Taking the pistol from the safehouse, Lin Jiayao crouched down, preparing to use Bone Spike Lurker to scout the area.

The moment her finger touched the ground, activating Bone Spike Lurker, she quickly dropped to the ground, concealing the pistol beneath her.

She heard footsteps. Eight people, all human.

The heavy thud of boots on the ground; they all seemed to be strong adult men.

“Pyke, Lee, hold this position, others follow me.”

    “Affirmative.”

    “Roger that, boss.”

After a brief exchange in English, two sets of footsteps stopped.

The other six continued to move quickly towards her.

Lin Jiayao could hear the clattering of their tactical gear. She lay still, pretending to be a corpse.

Only after they passed did she slowly turn and look at their retreating figures.

They were a team in black tactical gear, bulletproof vests, tactical helmets, and night vision goggles. Their equipment would have been expensive even before the apocalypse.

Especially their heavily modified guns; Lin Jiayao couldn’t even identify the models.

America was different from China. Their firearms and accessories were far more advanced, having been readily available to civilians before the apocalypse, like large toys.

But now, in the apocalypse, this had become an advantage.

The well-equipped tactical team reached the ruins and stopped.

They split into groups. Two remained behind to guard the perimeter, while the other four opened burlap sacks and began collecting blood crystals.

Their movements were swift and practiced.

Had they used a Hive Zombie to lure the horde into the building, detonated explosives, and then returned to scavenge the battlefield?

A highly efficient way to collect blood crystals.

“Boss, over here! I sense it!”

One of them shouted excitedly in English, and the two guards joined them.

They seemed to have found something and began digging through the rubble.

    “Buzz—”

The buzzing in Lin Jiayao’s mind intensified as they dug.

It seemed their actions had angered whatever was buried beneath.

    “Fuck!!!”

A terrified shout, followed by the muffled sounds of suppressed gunfire.

It seemed the Hive Zombie, angered, had intensified its call, summoning the remaining zombies towards the team.

    “Back! Back! Fall back!!!”

Lin Jiayao saw zombies swarming from all directions towards the ruins. These weren’t the ones that had been crushed in the building, but those that had been lurking nearby.

They looked like Sprinters with exposed muscles, but their muscles were black, with a matte texture, as if covered by a protective film.

They charged towards the center of the ruins, drawn to the gunfire.

Even Lin Jiayao had almost succumbed to the mental pull.

The fight didn’t last long. Their firepower was no match for the overwhelming number of Sprinters. Within five minutes, the gunfire stopped.

After a while, the Sprinter-like zombies began frantically digging, as if trying to unearth something.

Only then did Lin Jiayao dare to get up.

That human team, though quickly eliminated, had been a greater threat to her than the horde.

But she couldn’t understand why the Hive Zombie had ambushed those Sprinters beforehand.

Had its intelligence evolved to such a degree?

With this question in mind, Lin Jiayao followed the buzzing, walking towards the digging zombies.

Reaching the spot where they were frantically digging, Lin Jiayao bent down, picked up a stone, and tossed it aside, pretending to be working.

Her right hand reached out and unfastened the bulletproof vest from one of the corpses.

Confirming she wasn’t being watched, she quickly started looting.

Tactical helmet? Remove the night vision goggles, put it on.

    Bulletproof vest? Put it on.

Ammo vest? Put it on over the bulletproof vest, leaving the unfastened straps dangling.

Gun? Take the one the “boss” had been holding, along with all his magazines.

Unable to wear anything more, she started collecting grenades, finding three and a few disposable syringes labeled with a name she didn’t recognize, seemingly adrenaline.

As Lin Jiayao happily looted, the zombies seemed to be making progress with their digging.

    “Buzz—”

The buzzing in her mind suddenly intensified. She switched on the laser sight attached to one of the rifles and aimed it at the source.

Several black Sprinters were pulling at something, trying to drag it out of the ground.

    “Crack, crack, crack—”

After pushing aside a pile of rocks, the thing finally emerged.

    Lin Jiayao saw it clearly.

It was a grotesque creature that made her stomach churn.

It was about two meters tall, but incredibly bloated, like a morbidly obese person.

Its head had atrophied to the size of a fist, covered in green veins, with no discernible features except for a small opening for a mouth.

From its neck to its shoulders were countless black holes, like a honeycomb, with emerald green insects crawling in and out.

Its body was grotesquely swollen, its skin almost translucent.

Lin Jiayao could see what was inside.

Human brains, connected by emerald green threads, piled haphazardly within its body like toppings in a boba tea.

It looked like a giant, pulsating blob of aspic, filled with human brains, instantly turning Lin Jiayao off any kind of fatty food.

After the grotesque zombie was pulled out, its small head swayed like a snake, and the countless holes on its neck and shoulders wriggled, emitting a buzzing sound.

    “Buzz, buzz—”

The zombies around it started moving again, searching for blood crystals.

After a while, the zombie seemed to sense something was amiss. It turned towards Lin Jiayao.

    “Buzz—”

A powerful, almost hypnotic suggestion entered Lin Jiayao’s mind, telling her what it wanted her to do.

    Collect food. Bring it here.

A simple command, seemingly directed at the still motionless Lin Jiayao.

It didn’t even seem to notice the bulletproof vest and oversized helmet on her small body.

It seemed unable to comprehend these human items. To it, regardless of what she was wearing, she was just another zombie.

And in its perception, she was a weak, easily controlled zombie.

Lin Jiayao didn’t know if this disgusting zombie had any other abilities. Holding a rifle, she bent down and casually poked at the stones on the ground with the barrel.

A clear display of feigned obedience.

Seeing the small zombie “searching for blood crystals,” the Hive Zombie turned and lumbered towards a nearby human corpse.

    “Gurgle—Gurgle—”

The brains and pus inside its swollen belly sloshed with every step, a sickening sound.

It reached the corpse, sat down with a “thump,” and then, leaning forward, ripped off an arm.

    “Crack—”

Raising the severed arm, it held the bloody stump to its atrophied head and twisted, a sickening crunch of bone echoing through the air.

Blood and bits of flesh splattered onto its head, only a small portion entering its tiny mouth.

Like Bear Grylls squeezing water from cow dung in the wilderness.

After draining the marrow and remaining blood from the arm, it casually tossed the scraps aside, reached out with its bloodstained hand, and snapped the corpse’s neck.

Then, holding the head by the neck, it crushed the skull with its other hand, peeling away the skin, hair, and bone fragments like an egg, revealing the yellowish brain within.

    “Buzz, buzz—”

Emerald green insects swarmed from the holes in its neck and shoulders, covering the brain.

In moments, the brain was devoured, and the insects returned to their honeycomb-like holes, except for one.

The single emerald insect crawled down the corpse’s broken neck and into its throat, disappearing into its body.

Within ten seconds, the corpse began to convulse, its veins glowing with an eerie green light, as if filled with a new kind of blood.

Watching this gruesome scene, like some ancient ritual, Lin Jiayao narrowed her eyes.

Where was this fleshy Hive Zombie’s weakness?

    She couldn’t see any.

It didn’t even have a proper head; that atrophied thing was just a feeding tool.

Even the massive explosion and the crushing weight of the debris hadn’t harmed it.

A question arose in her mind.

    Would bullets even be effective?

    Might as well try.

Lin Jiayao raised her rifle, aimed at the Hive Zombie’s back, the laser sight targeting its translucent skin.

The red laser even penetrated its skin, illuminating the brains floating in the murky fluid within.

It was a good thing she had the laser sight; with this small body, even looking through the scope was difficult.

    “Bang—”

She fired a single shot and then lowered the rifle, continuing to pretend she was digging for blood crystals.

She watched the zombie from the corner of her eye.

She could clearly see the bullet penetrate its back, punching through the gelatinous skin.

    “Buzz—”

Hit, the zombie seemed to go into a defensive state. The countless holes on its neck and shoulders widened, and swarms of glowing green insects flew out, buzzing around its body.

Besides a small puddle of pus and one destroyed brain, the bullet seemed to have had no effect.

The wound quickly sealed itself with the pus.

And strangely, the zombie completely ignored Lin Jiayao, walking past her towards an open area.

It didn’t seem to realize she had fired the shot.

“Too difficult to deal with…” Lin Jiayao muttered, watching its retreating figure. “And so unintelligent…”

This wasn’t an insult; the zombie truly seemed to lack intelligence.

The earlier ambush with the Sprinters had likely been instinctual, or a mere coincidence.

Lin Jiayao felt a little sorry for that eight-person team. They’d died needlessly.

Suddenly, she looked down at the three grenades on her vest.

She was almost certain now that the reason the explosion and debris hadn’t killed the Hive Zombie was because it hadn’t been at the epicenter.

And its thick skin had protected it from the impact.

But sharp bullets could still penetrate its skin.

A bold idea formed in her mind.

What if she put the three grenades inside its body?

Even if it didn’t kill it, it would be enough to turn those brains into mush, right?

Lin Jiayao took a grenade from her vest, gripped her rifle in her other hand, and followed the Hive Zombie.

    Chapter 62: The Hive Zombie

    “Mom—”

Before Huayibai could ask another question, Lin Jiayao covered its mouth.

“Busy now. Ask me later.” Lin Jiayao removed her hand and changed the subject. “Can you make yourself invisible to others? If not, it’s best you don’t follow me.”

Before understanding Huayibai’s nature, she had told the uninfected Awakened to watch out for a little girl with white hair.

She was going to a place with many Awakened; if Huayibai followed, there was a high chance of trouble.

“It’s okay, Mommy,” Huayibai smiled, revealing a small canine tooth. “They can’t see me~”

    Can’t see me?

Lin Jiayao let the blood-red tendrils in her eyes recede slightly. As they did, Huayibai seemed to vanish before her eyes.

    Even the burlap sack disappeared.

When she let the tendrils cover her pupils again, she saw a faint, red glow of spores surrounding Huayibai.

Was this also a fungal zombie ability?

But Lin Jiayao couldn’t use this stealth, or rather, cloaking ability.

It seemed she had to reach Huayibai’s level to evolve it.

Lin Jiayao still didn’t know Huayibai’s true strength. It had been too docile, and there hadn’t been a chance to test its abilities.

Perhaps equivalent to a C-rank Awakened, or higher?

Time was short; she would investigate later.

There would be plenty of opportunities.

Seeing that Huayibai could conceal itself, Lin Jiayao didn’t say anything more and headed towards her destination.

    The combat department.

Both Xie Yi’s and An Xiaoxi’s memories pointed to one person who would know the answer to her question.

Jiang Chun, a capable young woman in the intelligence department, responsible for organizing and summarizing data, and also a close friend of An Xiaoxi.

If Lin Jiayao remembered correctly, Jiang Chun was also among the uninfected.

Recalling her memories of Jiang Chun, Lin Jiayao walked towards the combat department building.

    “Rustle, rustle—”

Inside a private office on the fifth floor of the combat department building, a woman with short red hair impatiently flipped through the documents in her hand.

She flipped through them so quickly that no human could possibly read them. Of course, she herself probably couldn’t either; she was just venting.

    “Thump—”

She slammed her fist on the desk and rubbed her temples in frustration.

Her name was Jiang Chun, an ordinary Awakened in Survivor’s Light. Her ability was rather weak: photographic memory.

Naturally, she was assigned to the intelligence department, responsible for recording and organizing information.

She was fine with this; she wasn’t a battle maniac, not driven to fight zombies.

Everyone in Survivor’s Light contributed in their own way. She was contributing her share, and she had always been content with that.

Until yesterday, when her peaceful, hopeful life had been shattered by a massive explosion and a powerful shockwave.

Hope had crumbled. Survivor’s Light, the organization she had believed to be invincible, even against the Voodoo Cult, was now infected with a strange new virus, and most of its members had been affected.

Even B-rank Awakened hadn’t been spared.

A terrifying virus had been spreading among them for a long time.

At first, Jiang Chun hadn’t believed it. But the increasingly bizarre events forced her to accept the truth.

First, the sudden explosion of the government center, their headquarters.

Then, the grotesque, split-open head that had rolled to her feet at the site of the explosion.

And what horrified her even more was that the people around her, even the Awakened, seemed oblivious to these monstrosities.

Initially, Jiang Chun had thought she was hallucinating, or that she had been infected by some hallucinogenic virus, or simply that she was too tired.

But when more and more grotesque corpses, covered in withered tendrils, were dug out, and most people recognized them, Jiang Chun was convinced she had finally lost her mind after five years in the apocalypse.

Only when her good friend, An Xiaoxi, found her and said she could also see them did she begin to recover.

But the more she interacted with An Xiaoxi, the more she felt something was off.

Her speech, her demeanor, it was like she was a completely different person.

And after hearing An Xiaoxi’s explanation about the fungal zombies, Jiang Chun was certain – this wasn’t her friend.

Although her voice and speech patterns were the same, her detailed description of the zombies convinced Jiang Chun – this wasn’t the An Xiaoxi she knew.

Her friend was terrified of worms and anything that wriggled; she wouldn’t be able to describe the fungal zombies and their characteristics so calmly.

And where had she gotten this information? They were almost always together, except when An Xiaoxi was working.

An Xiaoxi was never this assertive, never this decisive in directing others.

And she hadn’t returned to their apartment last night; she didn’t know where she had gone – she had never stayed out all night before.

She hadn’t even gone to the radio station – the most important propaganda tool of Survivor’s Light, a place where An Xiaoxi had never been late.

It was highly likely that An Xiaoxi had also been infected.

Although she didn’t understand why An Xiaoxi would reveal the secret of the fungal zombies, Jiang Chun remained wary.

Two other things bothered Jiang Chun today.

    Only thirty-one uninfected Awakened remained.

And she estimated there would be fewer soon.

The two missing were an Awakened couple. They had hanged themselves. By the time others noticed the lights in their apartment had been on all night, their bodies were cold.

They couldn’t bear the news of Survivor’s Light’s effective collapse.

Jiang Chun knew there would be more suicides soon.

Survivor’s Light, once a beacon of hope, would become a haven for the infected.

    The irony was crushing.

But she could do nothing but wait for the reconnaissance teams to return.

    “Knock, knock, knock—”

A knock at her door made her jump.

Although not all Awakened had been present at the time, the infection rate was clearly over fifty percent.

Whoever was knocking had a fifty percent chance of being an infected Mimic.

Even knowing the infected wouldn’t attack her, she couldn’t shake the fear.

    “Come in.”

She reached under the desk, opened a drawer, and gripped a pistol.

But when the door opened, Jiang Chun froze.

    It was An Xiaoxi.

    What was she doing here?

Was it really her? Or… it?

Jiang Chun gritted her teeth, a wave of anger washing over her. She tightened her grip on the pistol.

If this truly was an infected, pretending to be her friend, it was the ultimate betrayal.

She forced her expression to remain neutral as An Xiaoxi sat down in front of her desk.

She swore, if this “An Xiaoxi” started acting cute and friendly like her friend usually did, she would shoot this monster without hesitation.

“I have two questions,” An Xiaoxi said, looking at her calmly. “I hope you can answer them.”

    Questions?

Jiang Chun stared at An Xiaoxi’s unfamiliar, cold expression, her breath catching in her throat.

It seemed… An Xiaoxi was truly gone.

The monster before her wasn’t even bothering to pretend anymore.

“Where can I find a Hive Zombie cluster, or a location with a high concentration of Hive Zombies?”

“And, have the remaining members of Survivor’s Light found a way to deal with the spores?”

Jiang Chun, still reeling from the loss of her best friend, looked up sharply at the second question.

“You’re not a zombie? You’re being controlled? Which organization are you with?”

She rapidly fired questions at “An Xiaoxi.”

She was certain the being before her wasn’t a zombie; it had human intelligence.

“Why should I answer your questions?” But Jiang Chun wasn’t foolish. Even knowing this was an Awakened controlling a fungal zombie, she wouldn’t answer so easily.

She needed to know their purpose.

“I need Hive Zombie blood crystals to evolve my new zombie. As for the second question, I just don’t want Survivor’s Light to collapse too quickly. Otherwise, the Voodoo Cult will be looking for new entertainment,” An Xiaoxi replied calmly.

Hearing this, Jiang Chun was silent for a moment, then released her grip on the pistol. “When… when did she…?”

Jiang Chun didn’t specify who “she” was, but “An Xiaoxi” seemed to understand, thinking for a moment before replying, “About three days ago. She fully transformed into a fruiting body.”

“Three days ago…” Jiang Chun murmured, leaning back against the sofa and looking at the ceiling.

After a long silence, she looked back at “An Xiaoxi” and forced a smile. “At least… she was real before.”

Knowing what she needed to know, Jiang Chun didn’t waste any more time.

Sitting up slightly, she said, “There are many types of zombies with hive minds, but not all are classified as Hive Zombies. What kind of blood crystal evolution are you looking for?”

She was familiar with control-type Awakened; they were like zombie Pokémon trainers, using their strong mental powers to control zombies, even nurturing a weak Biter into something more powerful.

Hive Zombies and special zombies were highly sought after by control-type Awakened, but their powerful mental resistance made them almost impossible to control.

The only way to obtain one was to feed a Biter Hive Zombie blood crystals and evolve it.

“Somewhere relatively close… Guanzhou City. Our reconnaissance team encountered an organized horde there. Although we didn’t see the main entity, we’re certain there’s a Hive Zombie there, but we don’t know the specific type.”

Jiang Chun thought for a moment. “There are very few recorded Hive Zombie types. Sometimes, our reconnaissance teams can’t even tell if it’s a normal horde or one controlled by a Hive Zombie.”

“So, these three locations are just possibilities: Qi City, Shizhuang City, and Xiaan City.”

“And, if you’re looking globally, there’s another location: Wisconsin in North America. We intercepted a distress signal from there when the satellites were still working. Apparently, that state is overrun with Hive Zombies, but it’s too far; there’s no way to get there.”

“Thank you,” Lin Jiayao said as “An Xiaoxi”, nodding politely, stood up to leave.

But just as “An Xiaoxi” reached the door, Jiang Chun called out to her.

“Although I don’t know who you are, thank you for the information about the fungal zombies,” she said, taking a deep breath. “We’ll get through this.”

“I wish you victory,” An Xiaoxi said with a slight nod before leaving, Jiang Chun alone in the office.

    Dealing with the infection… rebuilding Survivor’s Light…

    Was it really that simple…?

Meanwhile, Lin Jiayao, leaving the office, wasn’t as burdened by Jiang Chun’s worries.

She had never intended to maintain the pretense of being an ordinary person. Being perceived as a zombie controlled by an Awakened was a better cover.

And as for who that Awakened was, as long as she didn’t reveal it, they would never know.

Dismissing the events in the office, Lin Jiayao walked towards the extraction point, thinking about the cities Jiang Chun had mentioned.

One definite Hive Zombie in China, but possibly not many.

A large number of Hive Zombies, but not in China.

And three possibilities, which she disregarded.

    Lin Jiayao wasn’t a gambler.

If she wanted to guarantee finding a Hive Zombie, Wisconsin was the obvious choice.

Others might not be able to cross the Pacific and travel across America to Wisconsin, but Lin Jiayao could log in directly.

    Distance was meaningless to her.

Having gotten her answers, extraction was now a simple matter, just a short distance.

Reaching the designated extraction point, the kitchen of an old café, Lin Jiayao had about thirty minutes until the deadline.

Before extracting, she looked at Huayibai, still following her with the burlap sack, and said, “Make sure you read those books.”

This child needed to read more; otherwise, their next encounter would be filled with more inane questions.

“Mm-hmm, okay, Mommy,” Huayibai nodded quickly, then asked curiously, “Mommy, are you leaving again?”

“Yes, I have something to do,” Lin Jiayao nodded.

“Okay, I’ll wait for you to come back.” Huayibai stood obediently, its eyes fixed on Lin Jiayao, but didn’t say anything more.

Its forlorn expression seemed to ask why Mommy was leaving again so soon.

Lin Jiayao dragged a stool from the café into the kitchen, sat down, and waited for the extraction countdown.

After the countdown ended, she entered the familiar black consciousness space.

She had nothing to transfer to the warehouse, so she skipped that step and returned to her body.

    “Boom—”

The moment she returned, a clap of thunder startled her. She remembered the approaching typhoon in Yangzhou City.

Listening to the howling wind and the rattling windows, she couldn’t help but worry.

I hope the storm passes quickly, so Sister can return safely.

After a silent prayer, Lin Jiayao opened her eyes and looked at the evolution screen.

「1、【Symbiotic Link Lv.1 (Blue): The split fungal tendrils can connect to other hosts, absorbing or transmitting small amounts of nutrients】」
「2、【Tendril Binding Lv.1 (White): Fires two tendrils, ensnaring your opponent】」
「3、【Death Rattle Lv.1 (Blue): Upon losing a host body, you can condense your remaining energy for a final spore dispersal】」

Clear skies and white clouds. The perfect weather for evolution.
Number 3 seemed too depressing – a last resort ability. So, Lin Jiayao chose number 1, the other blue option.

After making her choice, she opened the system’s login interface again and selected the third zombie, its location still unspecified.

She looked at the right side of the map, found America, took the pistol from the warehouse and put it in the safehouse, and then clicked on Wisconsin.

Then, darkness consumed her once more.

    Chapter 61: Not Very Bright

The next day, at the resort camp, despite it being midday, the sky was overcast, dark clouds obscuring the sun.

    “Boom—”

A bolt of lightning split the sky, the brilliant white light branching out like fungal tendrils before exploding with a deafening roar.

The sound, like a bomb detonating, jolted Lin Jiayao awake.

She sat up quickly, her movements guarded, but her eyes were slightly unfocused, as if disoriented.

    “Rumble—”

    “Pitter-patter—”

The distant thunder and the relentless drumming of rain against the window gradually brought her back to her senses.

    A rainstorm?

    “Hoo…”

Lin Jiayao exhaled softly. A good night’s sleep had restored her mental strength. Apart from the lingering fear from the thunder, she felt fine.

“Has Sister gone out…?” Lin Jiayao picked up the sticky note on the nightstand and slowly read it aloud. “Picking up the car and loading supplies today. Might take a detour. Will be back before dinner…”

Beside the note were a can of luncheon meat and a bottle of water – her breakfast.

Lin Jiayao usually slept for more than ten hours, so waking up to find her sister gone was normal.

Her sister couldn’t just wait for her to wake up; buying supplies and a vehicle was a priority.

    “Boom—”

Another clap of thunder interrupted her thoughts.

    The thunder worried her.

The sky was so dark, the sun completely obscured; there would definitely be mutated zombies out and about.

But she quickly dismissed the worry.

Her sister had been in Baiyan District for five years; she knew which areas were safe and which weren’t.

Rather than worrying about her sister, she should worry about her own mental state.

Although she had been logging into zombies for several days, her mental strength was increasing very slowly.

If this continued, she would have to limit her login time to ensure her own safety.

This would, in turn, slow down her evolution rate.

And she could control her own login time, but the system’s extraction times and distances were unpredictable.

Not to mention the unexpected encounters and battles during extraction that could delay her return.

Strengthening her mental fortitude seemed to be her top priority now.

    She called out the system.

The system panel still displayed the evolution options from her last extraction with Mask.

    「Please retain your evolution」
「1、【Bone Skin Lv.2 (Gray): Hardens your skin, granting some defense】」
「2、【Bone Spike Lurker Lv.3 (Gray): Increases Lurker precision, can simulate terrain by emitting vibrations, 50m range】」
「3、【Bone Regeneration Lv.1 (Gray): Your bones regenerate faster. Consuming blood crystals doubles the regeneration speed】」

She hadn’t chosen one yesterday before falling asleep in her sister’s arms.

She’d been too mentally exhausted to care, putting it off until now.

Mainly because the options weren’t very appealing; they all seemed equally mediocre.

After a moment of thought, Lin Jiayao chose number 3.

Her Lv.2 Bone Spike Lurker was sufficient for now. Lv.3 didn’t increase the range, just added a terrain simulation function.

While potentially useful for scouting, it wasn’t something she needed right now.

She preferred the Lv.1 Bone Regeneration.

After the battle with the Armored zombie, she understood its importance.

Mask’s face had been practically ripped off, and she’d almost been killed by the Armored zombie’s fist, but thanks to blood crystal regeneration, she’d survived and won.

As long as she had enough blood crystals and wasn’t instantly killed, this ability was a lifesaver.

It was likely classified as gray because of its high blood crystal consumption.

After choosing number 3, Lin Jiayao felt a tingling sensation in her bones, which quickly subsided.

It was so quick that she almost missed it. Just as she was about to open the login interface, she paused.

    Wait…

She had felt the tingling in all her bones.

    All of them???

Lin Jiayao quickly pulled back the blankets and looked at her legs.

Her slender legs lay straight and still.

Though they didn’t get much exercise, thanks to her sister’s regular massages, they hadn’t atrophied and were still perfectly shaped.

Holding her breath, Lin Jiayao tried to move them… and failed.

    They remained motionless.

    Was it… just her imagination?

    No, definitely not.

She clearly remembered the sensation, the distinct feeling in her legs – although it was only in her bones.

Was this a sign of improvement?

    It had to be!

Lin Jiayao smiled faintly at the thought.

She opened the water bottle and the can of luncheon meat her sister had left and ate her combined breakfast and lunch while looking at the login interface.

    「No.1: [Mask] (Available for login)」
    「No.2: [Unnamed] (Available for login)」
    「No.3: 🌐 (Available for login)」

Her goal was clear: to find a way to enhance her mental fortitude through evolution so she wouldn’t be incapacitated after long login sessions.

She first renamed the second zombie “An Xiaoxi” – this body’s original name – and then started thinking about how to increase her mental strength.

Logging into Mask wouldn’t help; its evolutions were all bone-related.

Logging into An Xiaoxi was also unlikely to be helpful; she had already chosen two fungus-related evolutions, neither of which seemed related to mental strength.

Her only option seemed to be the third zombie slot.

But even if she chose a specific region, the assigned zombie would still be random; finding a mental enhancement evolution this way was like searching for a needle in a haystack.

But even with complete randomness, there were ways to increase her chances.

    By focusing on specific regions.

Although Lin Jiayao had only been to three cities with zombies, it was clear that the zombies’ evolutionary paths differed in each city.

Yangzhou City had a higher concentration of Nest Zombies, Xin City had a lot of Armored zombies, and Donghai City was dominated by Blood Orb Fungus zombies.

There had to be regions where zombies had mental evolutions.

And Lin Jiayao, a regular listener of Survivor’s Light radio, remembered hearing about a type of zombie with a hive mind, controlled by a “queen.”

The radio hadn’t provided details, only mentioning that they were still researching it, and then the topic was dropped, as if they’d hit a roadblock.

Zombies with a hive mind might have enhanced mental capabilities.

Survivor’s Light must know where these zombies were located.

She just had to find out the specific region and then select it as the spawn point for her third zombie.

After confirming her plan, Lin Jiayao decided to log into An Xiaoxi first and ask a familiar Awakened for information.

But before logging in, she remembered something.

She opened the safehouse and warehouse interfaces and then hesitated.

The burlap sack filled with books occupied a 2×2 space.

    Her safehouse was also 2×2.

And she still had a blood crystal and a pistol in her safehouse.

The pistol wouldn’t be of much use this time. If she encountered trouble in Donghai City, a pistol wouldn’t solve it.

So, she moved the pistol to the warehouse.

Now only the blood crystal remained in the safehouse.

It was essential to carry a blood crystal with her. Although An Xiaoxi was an Awakened, her ability wasn’t combat-related, so her blood crystal stipend wasn’t much.

And An Xiaoxi didn’t have the habit of saving blood crystals, so Lin Jiayao had to bring her own.

If only the safehouse were bigger…

After a moment of hesitation, Lin Jiayao tried dragging the blood crystal into the 2×2 burlap sack.

Although the sack only occupied a 2×2 space, in reality, it could easily hold twenty books and a blood crystal.

To her surprise, the blood crystal went into the bulging sack.

Then, she moved the sack into a 2×2 grid in the safehouse.

    It actually fit…

This seemed to be the limit. She tried adding more, but it wouldn’t fit.

But she had discovered a useful function: these containers could automatically stack items.

For example, the twenty books that had occupied twenty grids in the warehouse were now neatly stacked within the sack.

Unfortunately, they couldn’t be manually stacked, and not all items could be stacked, like blood crystals.

    She would experiment more later.

Dismissing the thoughts of the warehouse, she lay on her side and, carrying the burlap sack of books and a blood crystal in the safehouse, selected the second zombie slot.

Familiar darkness enveloped her, her body falling asleep, her consciousness awakening in Donghai City, 1400 kilometers away.

Sensing the light, Lin Jiayao slowly opened her eyes.

Sunlight streamed through the mall’s glass windows, warming her.

One moment she’d been in a thunderstorm, the next in bright sunshine. The abrupt shift was slightly disorienting.

But the feeling quickly faded. Lin Jiayao took a deep breath, thinking about who to approach for information, and prepared to stand up.

But then she realized a small head was resting on her thigh.

    “Mm…”

Startled by her movement, the fluffy white head turned, looking at her sleepily.

Uh… that zombie monster… Huayibai? Why was it lying on her lap?

Before Lin Jiayao could speak, Huayibai seemed to realize its actions were inappropriate.

It quickly sat up, retracted the tendrils connecting the bench to Lin Jiayao’s chair, and scurried to the mall entrance, peering in through the glass.

As if the glass provided some sort of separation, making it less intrusive.

Hmm… it seemed to understand that she wasn’t particularly fond of it.

But even so, it hadn’t left. She wondered why.

Was it simply because it saw her as its mother?

Lin Jiayao took the burlap sack from the safehouse and placed it on the side, beckoning to Huayibai, who was hiding behind the glass.

Seeing her gesture, Huayibai looked around, saw that no one else was nearby, and then, its eyes lighting up, ran towards Lin Jiayao like an obedient puppy.

“Mommy…” Huayibai stopped in front of her, hands behind its back, looking down at its shoes.

Lin Jiayao looked at the seemingly well-behaved little girl and asked, “You’ll do anything I ask, right?”

“Mm-hmm,” Huayibai nodded vigorously, its white twintails bouncing. “Yibai will be obedient.”

    “Can you read?”

“Mm-hmm, Yibai can read human writing.”

    “Good.”

Lin Jiayao nodded and pointed at the burlap sack. “These are for you. Make sure you read them all.”

“Eh?” Huayibai looked surprised, then delighted. “For me?”

Seeing Lin Jiayao nod, it ran to the sack and crouched down, eager to see what was inside.

Its posture was rather… unladylike, its white dress riding up, revealing a flash of white thighs and underwear.

    Lin Jiayao frowned.

Even knowing that a zombie had no concept of modesty, seeing Huayibai, in a human body, behave this way made her uncomfortable.

“Huayibai, your skirt,” Lin Jiayao said, unable to help herself. “Girls shouldn’t show their private parts to others, understand?”

“Eh?” Huayibai looked up at Lin Jiayao, confused, then seemed to understand.

“Okay, Mommy.” It pulled its skirt down to cover its legs.

It probably didn’t understand why, but Mommy had said so, so it obeyed.

Then, it turned its attention back to the sack, opened it, and saw the books inside.

“Wow! So many presents!” Huayibai’s eyes lit up. It picked up a copy of Grimm’s Fairy Tales and smiled at Lin Jiayao. “Thank you, Mommy!”

Seeing its excitement, Lin Jiayao asked curiously, “Do you like reading?”

“No,” Huayibai shook its head. It didn’t understand the appeal of books at all.

“Then why are you so happy?”

“Because these are presents from Mommy~”

Hearing its innocent answer, Lin Jiayao felt a pang of guilt.

As if the creature before her was truly a child, delighted by a gift from its mother, even if it didn’t like the gift itself.

Lin Jiayao stood up and looked towards the mall entrance, avoiding Huayibai’s gaze.

    「Extraction Time 00:56:51」
    【Extraction Point: 1km】

One hour, one kilometer. Not much time.

This wasn’t good news. It meant she didn’t have much time to gather information.

“Mommy, what’s wrong?” Huayibai looked up at her curiously.

“It’s nothing,” Lin Jiayao shook her head and walked towards the mall exit.

Huayibai quickly stood up, picked up the large burlap sack, and followed closely behind.

“Yibai,” Lin Jiayao said, knowing it was following but not turning around. “If you have any questions about humans, you can ask me anytime.”

This meant she was willing to teach Huayibai.

“Really? Mommy?” Huayibai’s red eyes flickered with excitement.

Although it had some human memories, it didn’t understand most human rules and customs. It needed a teacher.

    “Mm.” Lin Jiayao nodded slightly.

What Lin Jiayao didn’t realize was that this nod had activated a relentless question-asking machine.

In fact, she regretted it almost immediately.

Huayibai: “Mommy, Mommy, do you know about diving?”

    Lin Jiayao: “Yes, I do.”

Huayibai: “On TV, they said the less splash, the higher the score. Then why don’t they just jump onto the land?”

    Lin Jiayao: “…”

Huayibai’s questions weren’t something a normal human would ask.

Of course, it wasn’t human, so its questions, while strange, made sense.

“Mommy, Mommy, a person’s last words are called a ‘will.’ What are their words after death called?”

“Mommy, Mommy, I read in a book that the human intestines are as long as a basketball court. Why don’t people play basketball in their intestines?”

    “Mommy…”

At first, Lin Jiayao answered patiently, but it became increasingly difficult.

What kind of questions were these?!

    Chapter 60: Embracing Sleep

    “Hoo—”

After connecting Mask’s head to the Armored zombie’s body, Lin Jiayao swung its massive right arm.

    “Thump—”

    “Crunch, crunch, crunch—”

The sound of metal meeting flesh and bone echoed as the zombies surrounding the Armored zombie were sent flying, their bones shattered.

Repeating the process on the left side, Lin Jiayao stood up.

    “So tall…”

This was Lin Jiayao’s first thought as she controlled the towering body.

Looking around, she felt like the surrounding zombies were children.

Glancing at the extraction time, she saw she had half an hour left and decided to scavenge the battlefield.

She looked at the scattered blood crystals and extended bone spikes through the gaps in the metal plating, picking them up one by one.

These were the blood crystals that had precipitated from the Armored zombie’s body. Some had been consumed by the zombies, who had even gnawed away parts of its flesh.

Other smaller crystals came from the zombies she had killed after they’d fed on the Armored zombie.

It took about three minutes to gather all the blood crystals.

Lin Jiayao couldn’t tell exactly how many grams there were, but she could make an estimate.

Smaller crystals would fuse together, stopping at 500g.

So, a blood crystal that couldn’t fuse any further was exactly 500g.

After the fusion process completed, Lin Jiayao had her answer.

About one and a half blood crystals.

Plus the half she still had in her mouth, that made two.

This Armored zombie contained even more blood crystals than a Nest Zombie.

    Of course, this was normal.

The Armored zombie was much stronger than a Nest Zombie.

A Nest Zombie probably couldn’t even penetrate an Armored zombie’s defenses.

And an Armored zombie wouldn’t be able to catch the much faster Nest Zombie.

She spat out the blood crystal in her mouth, let it fuse with the extra half, and ended up with a small, fingernail-sized crystal remaining.

She put the two 500g blood crystals into the safehouse.

She put the small remaining crystal in her mouth to continue repairing Mask’s damaged head.

Mask’s appearance had changed drastically since the encounter with the Nest Zombie.

    The changes were significant.

Before, Mask had been an ordinary, albeit pale, zombie head, still somewhat human-looking.

But now, everything below its nose was smooth, jade-like bone.

The bone connected to the remaining skin and flesh on Mask’s face and neck, as if half of its face had been flayed, revealing the skull beneath.

And most noticeably, Mask’s human teeth had been replaced with sharp fangs.

Even without a mirror, Lin Jiayao knew how monstrous she looked.

This was the result of prioritizing combat effectiveness during an emergency, fueled by blood crystals.

But Lin Jiayao didn’t plan to spend blood crystals restoring Mask’s appearance.

So what if it was ugly? Would looking pretty increase its attack power?

More importantly, it would waste blood crystals.

Before, she hadn’t fully grasped the importance of blood crystals. But after using the Hideout and experiencing this battle, she understood.

Whether upgrading the Hideout or fighting, blood crystals were essential for replenishing consumption.

    She had to find more.

The thought of finding more crystals reminded her of the half-collapsed building she’d seen earlier.

Several dormant Armored zombies were clinging to it… perhaps she could find a way to eliminate them the next time she logged into Mask.

It was a good idea, but the execution would be extremely difficult.

Fighting just one Armored zombie had almost killed her; facing several at once would be a nightmare.

If she wasn’t careful and they all jumped down at the same time, she wouldn’t stand a chance.

    “Thump—Thump—”

Lin Jiayao controlled the Armored zombie’s massive body and walked towards the billboard where she had left her backpack.

Although its movements seemed slow, each step covered a considerable distance.

Almost three or four times the length of an ordinary person’s stride.

    Soon, she reached the billboard.

Picking up the backpack and the burlap sack filled with magazines and books, Lin Jiayao looked at her reflection in the billboard’s plastic surface and paused.

Mask’s current form was grotesque; she knew that.

But no matter how grotesque, it was still the size of a normal human head.

Such a small head on such a massive body… it looked disproportionate.

Only because the metal plating on its chest had been ripped open could she see anything; otherwise, her vision would be completely obstructed.

Not that Mask needed to see, of course.

Carrying her loot, Lin Jiayao reached the extraction point – an underground parking lot.

The parking lot was a mess, the ground covered in about half a meter of murky, black water.

It seemed like a drainage problem, years of accumulated sewage.

Lin Jiayao was glad Mask had no sense of smell.

She controlled the Armored zombie to sit down against a pillar and saw the extraction timer begin its countdown.

    「Extracting in: 7.7」

As the countdown ended, Lin Jiayao’s consciousness was pulled into darkness.

She saw the illusory giant figure, the small safehouse, and the slightly larger square gray box.

She moved one blood crystal from the safehouse to the warehouse, keeping one in the safehouse as a reserve.

Then, she started moving the other items.

She would move the books to the warehouse and then transfer them to the safehouse and bring them over the next time she controlled the fungal zombie.

But as she moved the books, she frowned.

Each book occupied a single grid.

She had taken twenty books, now occupying twenty grids.

This made the previously spacious 10×10 warehouse seem slightly cramped.

These books are taking up too much space…

Then, her gaze fell on the burlap sack the Armored zombie had been carrying.

After transferring the remaining magazines from the sack to the backpack, she put the empty sack into the warehouse.

The folded sack occupied a single grid.

Then, she moved one of the children’s books onto the sack.

As she watched, the sack unfolded, now occupying four grids.

Lin Jiayao started moving the books, one by one, into the 2×2 sack.

After transferring all twenty books, the 2×2 sack finally turned gray, indicating it was full.

A 2×2 sack… containing items that originally occupied twenty grids?

What kind of space-folding magic was this?

Lin Jiayao blinked, looking at the similarly sized 2×2 safehouse.

    Is… is this a bug?

    A system bug?

She felt a new possibility opening up.

Could she put smaller bags within larger bags, pouches within vests, wallets within pouches, exploiting this system bug to maximize her storage capacity?

    She would have to experiment.

There weren’t many items for her to test with now. She exited the space and returned to reality.

But the moment her consciousness returned to her body, she felt a wave of dizziness.

An overwhelming nausea, like being incredibly drunk.

She pushed away the blankets, struggling to reach the edge of the bed, wanting to lean over the side.

But she couldn’t control her body properly.

Her hand missed the edge of the bed, and she fell to the floor.

    “Thump—”

Her upper body hit the floor, her head striking the hard surface, but her legs remained motionless on the bed, as if pinned there.

“Yaoyao? Yaoyao?! What’s wrong?” Lin Xiwan, who had been sleeping beside her, woke up and quickly rolled over, lifting Lin Jiayao back onto the bed.

The impact had intensified the dizziness, and the nausea was so overwhelming that Lin Jiayao had even forgotten her sister’s habit of holding her legs while sleeping.

Only after being placed back on the bed did the nausea and dizziness slowly subside.

    Replaced by a bone-deep exhaustion.

    “I… I’m fine…”

In the darkness, Lin Jiayao couldn’t clearly see her sister’s expression, but she could sense her worry.

But her reply didn’t sound convincing.

Her sister clearly didn’t believe her and scrambled to light a candle.

Lying in bed, Lin Jiayao wondered why she was suddenly feeling this way.

    Food poisoning?

    It seemed possible…

But she knew it wasn’t that.

If it were food poisoning, she would be experiencing stomach cramps, or at least some discomfort.

But all she felt was a slight dizziness and overwhelming mental fatigue.

It was likely due to mental exhaustion.

Was it the battle between Mask and the Armored zombie?

Her weak mental state worried her.

Would there come a time when she logged out and couldn’t wake up?

If this continued, getting worse each time, it was a real possibility.

“Do you want some water? Is your stomach upset? Was there something wrong with the canned food we had for dinner?”

Lin Xiwan crouched beside the bed, her voice full of concern.

Lin Jiayao noticed that in her haste, her sister hadn’t even put on her shoes before lighting the candle and bringing her a glass of water.

“Maybe…” Lin Jiayao said softly, looking at her worried sister. “But I feel much better now.”

“Really?” Lin Xiwan blinked, looking at her sister for a long moment before holding up the glass. “Want some water?”

    “Mm.” Lin Jiayao nodded.

Lin Xiwan helped her sit up, placed the blanket on her outstretched hand, and watched her slowly drink the water.

Her sister’s frail appearance made Lin Xiwan’s heart ache.

If it weren’t for this damned apocalypse, her sister would be receiving better care, better medical treatment. She might even have a chance to walk again.

It was all the fault of these damned zombies and the apocalypse…

It was a foolish dream, but she wished she could restore the world to how it once was…

The name “Survivor’s Light” surfaced in her mind.

Thinking of that organization, Lin Xiwan felt that perhaps, just perhaps, her dream wasn’t so foolish after all.

“What are you thinking about?” Lin Jiayao asked, seeing her sister lost in thought.

“Nothing, it’s nothing,” Lin Xiwan shook her head and caressed her sister’s face.

Suddenly, as if making a firm decision, she looked at her sister with newfound determination.

“Don’t worry, Yaoyao, I’ll get you to Donghai Province safely,” she said earnestly. “There’s a safer environment there, stronger Awakened. Maybe they can even find a way to heal your legs.”

Lin Jiayao opened her mouth to speak but couldn’t find the words.

    Because her sister was right.

Donghai City was indeed the safest place for her now.

It had become a paradise for fungal zombies, and she, thanks to the system, had become the “mother” of the most powerful fungal zombie there.

The thought made her feel slightly dizzy.

Even Survivor’s Light, considered the safest place, had become a forbidden zone for most humans.

Was there still hope for humanity?

    Where did their future lie?

That night, the two sisters embraced each other, holding on tight, not letting go until morning.

  • Sickly Girl Doesn’t Die in Zombie Simulator 59

    Chapter 59: Twilight Bloodbath

A torrent of bullets, carrying tremendous kinetic energy, streamed from the rifles towards the charging Armored zombie.

But after penetrating the layers of scrap metal and car doors attached to its body, the bullets merely chipped away at the Armored zombie’s bone armor, unable to pierce through.

The bone armor alone couldn’t withstand gunfire; the metal plating provided an additional layer of protection, like a bulletproof vest.

Three of the six Type 95 rifles jammed during the sustained automatic fire, and another one exploded, plastic fragments narrowly missing Lin Jiayao’s eyes.

    “Damn it…”

Did these gang members never maintain their weapons?

As the massive metal behemoth closed in, Lin Jiayao aimed her scorpion tail at the streetlight behind her and fired the bone chain hook.

The hook accurately hit the top of the streetlight. As Lin Jiayao retracted the chain, her body was pulled upwards, dangling from the light.

    “Thump—Thump—Thump—”

The massive Armored zombie, unable to stop its charge, slammed headfirst into the streetlight. With a deafening clang, the slender pole snapped.

Before being thrown off, Lin Jiayao fired the bone chain hook again, embedding it in a nearby billboard and pulling herself towards it.

Discarding the jammed and exploded rifles, Lin Jiayao quickly reloaded the remaining two while the Armored zombie struggled to regain its balance.

After reloading, she hung the burlap sack and backpack on the damaged billboard, taking only a few magazines, and then, using the billboards as anchor points, rapidly changed positions.

    “Thump—Thump—Thump—”

The heavy footsteps echoed again, accompanied by the clattering of metal plates on the Armored zombie’s body, sparks flying as they scraped against each other.

Lin Jiayao, glancing back, saw the terrifying sight.

    Good thing it’s so slow…

Damn it… why didn’t Bone Spike Lurker detect its approach? It seemed to have fallen from the sky?

    Looking up, she quickly understood.

Where she had just been, there was a half-collapsed, unfinished building.

Since it was mostly rubble, she hadn’t paid attention to it.

Now, she saw that the sixty-meter-tall building was like a hive, several Armored zombies of varying sizes clinging to it, dormant.

And this one must have been on the outer layer, jumping down and attacking her when she passed by.

Why were they gathered on that building? Armored zombies weren’t known for their pack behavior.

    “Crack—”

As Lin Jiayao was analyzing the situation and formulating a plan, she heard a familiar sound.

She instinctively raised her bone spikes to protect her head, but the bone shield was pierced.

She felt something snag her bone spikes and then a powerful force yanked her backward.

Lin Jiayao’s eyes widened as she looked at the Armored zombie.

It had also evolved an ability similar to her bone chain hook.

The lower half of the zombie’s head emerged from its metal-plated body. It opened its massive jaws and fired a thick, blood-streaked bone chain, hooking onto Lin Jiayao’s bone spikes and pulling her towards its mouth.

    “Rat-tat-tat-tat—”

Ignoring the risk of damaging the rifles, Lin Jiayao aimed them at the Armored zombie’s mouth and opened fire.

    “Roar—”

Blood splattered within the zombie’s mouth, but it just roared, seemingly unaffected by the bullets.

    Too late.

Seeing the massive jaws rapidly approaching, Lin Jiayao quickly extended several bone spikes and, like crab pincers, severed the ones that had been hooked.

The pulling force disappeared, but her momentum still carried her towards the Armored zombie.

She extended her bone legs, trying to dig into the ground, but she couldn’t stop. She rolled several times before coming to a stop.

    This was pure brute force.

    “Crack—”

Lin Jiayao’s scorpion tail fired the bone chain hook again, anchoring her to a nearby billboard and pulling her to a safer distance.

The Armored zombie chewed and swallowed her severed bone spikes.

Mask’s hardened bone spikes were as brittle as biscuits to its powerful jaws.

While it was chewing, Lin Jiayao quickly took the 20g of blood crystals she had just acquired and stuffed them into her mouth.

She felt a burning sensation as the crystals melted, a warmth spreading through her, repairing her broken legs and bone spikes.

She was consuming blood crystals to regenerate her damaged bones.

Feeling the burning in her mouth, Lin Jiayao looked at the Armored zombie, its eyeless face now turned towards her.

    I can’t outrun it.

Comparing her hook’s firing speed and her own movement speed, Lin Jiayao reached this conclusion.

Even if she ran, the Armored zombie would just pull her back with its bone chain.

    She needed a new strategy.

Lin Jiayao quickly scanned her surroundings and then lunged towards the toy store on her right.

    “Crash—”

Smashing through the already damaged glass doors, she entered the eight-story building, once filled with wholesale toys.

Inside, she quickly scanned for moving zombies with Bone Spike Lurker. Her eyes lit up as she spotted a Sprinter on the fourth floor.

    “Boom—”

    “Clatter, clatter, clatter—”

The massive Armored zombie crashed through the glass doors and charged after her.

Locating her, it extended its head from its metal plating and opened its jaws.

    “Crack—”

Before the Armored zombie’s bone chain could fire, Lin Jiayao raised a bone spike to block it and then, before being pulled in, severed her own spike.

With practiced fluidity, she then scurried towards the stairwell.

Lin Jiayao moved nimbly through the stairs, but the Armored zombie wasn’t so agile.

This wasn’t the unfinished building; the stairwell was too narrow for its massive frame.

It crashed through sections of the stairs as it climbed.

And it could even leap, using its thick bone spikes to grapple onto higher levels, ascending with brute force.

Like an unstoppable tunnel boring machine, smashing through any obstacles.

    “Click, click, click—”

Lin Jiayao, thanks to her smaller size, reached the fourth floor first.

She could have taken the stairs in the main lobby, but they were too wide, making it difficult to shake off the Armored zombie.

She had deliberately led it into the stairwell to buy some time.

She spotted the Sprinter on the fourth floor.

This Sprinter was clearly more evolved than the ones she had seen in Haixin District.

Of course, the weaker ones would have been killed by the Armored zombies.

    “Roar—”

The Sprinter noticed Lin Jiayao, its bloody muscles bulging, and roared through its mangled mouth.

Then, it turned and, using one hand to grip the railing, prepared to jump down.

    Trying to escape?

It would actually run? Had it been chased by Armored zombies before, developing an instinct to flee from bone-type zombies?

Looking at its torn mouth, Lin Jiayao thought her guess was probably correct.

But although its reaction was fast, it wasn’t fast enough.

Lin Jiayao raised two of her bone spikes, each gripping a rifle, and aimed at its head.

    “Rat-tat—”
    “Rat-tat-tat—”

As the Sprinter turned, Lin Jiayao fired, the remaining bullets hitting its head.

The Sprinter lost control of its body and slammed into the glass railing.

Lin Jiayao didn’t waste any time. She quickly reached the Sprinter’s corpse, severed its head, and attached her own.

Her bone spikes connected to its spine, rapidly spreading through its bones, and she gained control.

    “Crack, crack, click—”

Lin Jiayao stretched the Sprinter’s arms, its bones cracking.

She felt a surge of muscular power, greater than Mask’s.

    “Boom—”

The stairwell door on the side was smashed open by the Armored zombie, the metal door flying into a store, shattering glass.

But Lin Jiayao ignored it. She climbed over the railing and jumped down from the fourth floor.

    “Thump—”

The Sprinter landed heavily, the tiles cracking beneath its feet.

    “Roar—”

Seeing this, the Armored zombie roared in fury.

It charged through the glass railing, curled itself into a ball, and hurled itself towards Lin Jiayao.

But this time, it wasn’t Mask it was facing, but the Sprinter controlled by Mask.

    “Thump—”

Lin Jiayao controlled the Sprinter to dodge the attack, only a few shards of debris hitting her.

    “Crack—”

Before she could regain her balance, she heard the familiar sound.

Turning, she saw the Armored zombie extend its lower jaw, firing its thick bone chain towards her.

    This time, she didn’t dodge.

She controlled the Sprinter to jump slightly, her head avoiding the bone chain hook.

The Sprinter’s body wasn’t so lucky.

The hook pierced its heart, barbed bone spikes extending from the tip, securing it firmly.

Forcibly pulling free would tear a chunk of flesh. Even if it wasn’t fatal, it would be debilitating.

Barbed spikes, huh? A good idea… I should learn that…

Lin Jiayao briefly considered the mechanism, and then she was pulled towards the Armored zombie.

“I was waiting for you to expose yourself.”

Lin Jiayao, having found a sacrificial pawn, felt no fear. As she was pulled closer, two mantis-like bone blades extended from her neck, their sharp edges aimed at the Armored zombie’s exposed head.

The Armored zombie seemed to sense the danger and quickly retracted its barbs, preparing to withdraw its head and bone chain.

But Lin Jiayao wouldn’t let it.

She extended all her bone spikes and legs, hooking onto the thick bone chain, jamming it.

A moment later, she was right next to the Armored zombie’s jaws.

    “ROAR!!!”

The Armored zombie, sensing the imminent threat, raised its bone-covered fist, like a meteor hammer, and slammed it into Lin Jiayao’s chest.

    “Thump—”

It hit the Sprinter’s body, the force caving in its chest, the bone spikes on the Armored zombie’s fist tearing away chunks of flesh as it retracted.

Thick, dark red blood splattered everywhere.

Even so, Lin Jiayao’s bone spikes still clung to the chain, preventing the Armored zombie from retracting its head.

And she felt the force on the bone chain increase. Even her bone spikes, wedged between the chain and the metal plating, started to crack and break.

Being so close to the Armored zombie’s grotesque head filled Lin Jiayao with fear.

But the fear fueled her, replaced by a thrill of adrenaline.

She swung her mantis blades, slicing through the gaps in the metal plates, bone spikes, and flesh, severing the connection between the head and the body.

Dark brown blood spurted like a small fountain, staining Mask’s pale face and white hair.

    “Roar—”

Sensing the mortal threat, the Armored zombie flailed wildly, its massive arms smashing into Lin Jiayao.

    “THUMP!!!”

    “THUMP!!!”

Blow after blow, the Sprinter’s body was mangled like a rag, only some muscle and skin still connected below its waist.

    “Crack—”

Finally, a blow landed squarely on Lin Jiayao’s chin, shattering it.

The blow not only shattered her jaw and half of her neck but also the rifles she had been carrying.

Lin Jiayao felt dizzy, her senses dulled, as if drunk. Even her consciousness began to fade.

But she quickly snapped out of it and started frantically twisting her mantis blades, still embedded in the Armored zombie’s neck, thick blood and the zombie’s gurgling roars spraying her face.

A blood crystal materialized in her half-shattered mouth.

She pressed a bone spike against it, feeling a burning, melting sensation.

Fueled by this energy, a bony jaw regenerated beneath her broken face, sharp bone teeth gleaming coldly.

    “Crack—”

Lin Jiayao lowered her head and bit into the rusty metal plate on the Armored zombie’s chest, her sharp bone teeth piercing through.

She ripped off the entire plate, revealing the bone-covered skin beneath, studded with spikes.

Ignoring the sharp spikes, she bit down again at the joint between the head and chest.

This time, she tore through the bone armor.

    “Thump—”

The now completely frenzied Armored zombie, in a desperate act, slammed its fist into its own chest, hitting the back of Lin Jiayao’s head.

Everything went black. For a moment, Lin Jiayao thought she was returning to the consciousness space.

But Mask’s life was saved by the blood crystal she held in her mouth.

The back of her head shattered, fragments of her skull, along with brain matter and blood, sticking to the Armored zombie’s fist.

Lin Jiayao’s teeth, driven by the force of the blow, sank deep into the exposed flesh of the Armored zombie.

The Armored zombie, reeling from its own near-fatal blow, stumbled backward.

But as it retreated, it seemed to lose control, collapsing limply onto the ground with a metallic clang, raising a cloud of dust.

Lin Jiayao’s bone spikes, through the openings created by her mantis blades and teeth, finally pierced into the Armored zombie’s body.

Her head, as if losing consciousness, slumped against the zombie’s metal-plated body.

The blood crystal in her mouth continued to dissolve, repairing her body.

Slowly, Biters, attracted by the blood and the blood crystal’s scent, shuffled towards the massive, fallen Armored zombie.

They greedily tore at the metal plates, lapping up the blood and gore.

After an unknown amount of time, under the blood-red twilight sky, a head-spider slowly rose from the mass of feeding zombies.

The dried blood on her face, stained by the crimson sunset, took on a deeper, more sinister hue.

Standing tall above the feasting zombies, blood still dripping from her shattered head, the scene resembled a court of ghoulish subjects bowing before their emperor.

Lin Jiayao slowly raised her mantis bone blades, swept aside the heads of a few Biters, and then, with a mighty swing, severed the Armored zombie’s head.

A bundle of bone spikes extended from the back of her neck and connected to the Armored zombie’s spine.

    Chapter 58: Armored Zombie

The box in her sister’s hand was a slightly worn gift box, the words “China Gold” prominently displayed.

Of course, Lin Jiayao knew it didn’t contain gold; it was just a reusable gift box her sister had found.

From the rustling sound inside, it was likely fabric.

    New clothes?

    Or a scarf?

Lin Jiayao knew it was fabric because she had cheated with Bone Spike Lurker, but she wouldn’t spoil her sister’s surprise.

“I can’t guess,” she said with a smile, deliberately guessing something else. “Soap?”

    “Huh?”

Lin Jiayao’s answer clearly surprised Lin Xiwan.

“Why would you think that?” Lin Xiwan asked, shaking her head. “Of course not.”

“Because you mentioned showering as soon as you came in, so I guessed something related,” Lin Jiayao said with impeccable logic.

“Sigh, you never guess properly.” Lin Xiwan pouted, gave up on the guessing game, and opened the box.

A neatly folded piece of black fabric lay inside.

“Hmm… a scarf?” Lin Jiayao looked up at her sister. “In summer?”

    It was only early summer…

“Not a scarf, but better than a scarf.” Lin Xiwan took out the fabric and unfolded it.

    It was… a sleeveless cloak?

Lin Jiayao touched the fabric. It was warm and smooth, the large hood seemingly effective against cold winds.

It must have been a designer item before the apocalypse.

“Try it on?” Lin Xiwan undid the clasp and draped it over Lin Jiayao’s shoulders.

After fastening the clasp, she took a step back, nodding in satisfaction.

“How does it feel?” she asked, a hint of pride in her voice.

“Hot,” Lin Jiayao said after a moment of thought, giving an honest answer.

“It’s not for wearing now,” Lin Xiwan said, sitting down and unfastening the clasp. “It’s for the journey. You can use it as a blanket if you don’t want to wear it. You don’t want to catch a cold…”

Talking about Lin Jiayao’s health always made her sister worry.

Lin Jiayao was sure that if heatstroke didn’t exist, her sister would wrap her in layers of blankets.

Like a grandmother worried about her grandchild catching a chill.

Though she thought this, she still expressed her gratitude. “It’s very nice. Thank you, Sister.”

“What are you thanking me for?” Lin Xiwan smiled, pinching her sister’s soft cheeks.

Lin Jiayao turned her head, escaping her sister’s grasp, and asked, “How did the shopping go?”

“Not completely smooth sailing, but I managed to reserve most of the items on the list. And I got a modified SUV from the military base.”

Lin Jiayao had heard her sister talk about the modified SUVs before.

Basically, all non-essential components, like the air conditioning, were removed to reduce weight, and metal grilles were welded onto the windows.

“Trucks consume too much fuel, and an SUV can’t carry enough supplies,” Lin Xiwan sighed. “We’ll have to scavenge along the way.”

Lin Jiayao nodded, thinking to herself, I understand. Plant supplies along the route, no problem.

This was easy to solve; she just needed to have her zombies leave supplies along the way.

Seeing her sister looking down, Lin Xiwan assumed she was worried about supplies and stroked her head.

“Don’t worry. Leave it to Sister.”

    “Mm.”

“Oh, and I arranged for some trustworthy people to pick up the supplies over the next two days, so I can stay with you,” Lin Xiwan said, watching her sister’s face for any sign of delight.

To her slight disappointment, her sister’s expression remained unchanged, neither happy nor unhappy.

“That’s good,” Lin Jiayao nodded. Having her sister around was always reassuring.

Before, blood crystal Awakened had seemed incredibly powerful, with their strange abilities. She had envied them.

But now, she realized that low-rank Awakened were just slightly stronger humans.

Her sister was still D-rank. Unless they had exceptionally unique abilities, most Awakened at her sister’s level wouldn’t be a match for her now.

And if a D-rank Awakened encountered Mask, they would be instantly killed – Mask had eight guns.

“What do you want to eat? Sister will get it for you.” Lin Xiwan suddenly stood up. “We have plenty of blood crystals; don’t worry about running out.”

“Hmm… beef, luncheon meat, cola… Coca-Cola. Just one bottle. I still have one hidden,” Lin Jiayao said. She didn’t usually crave meat, but she was starving now.

She hadn’t eaten anything since last night, and the mental exhaustion made her crave high-calorie foods.

Lin Xiwan was a little surprised by her sister’s sudden change in appetite, but she didn’t ask questions. She simply went out and bought the food.

After preparing a warm, home-cooked meal for her sister, Lin Jiayao said she was tired.

Lin Xiwan wasn’t surprised; her sister looked exhausted.

After helping her sister wash up in the bathroom, Lin Xiwan carried her to bed and said goodnight.

Watching her sister fall asleep, Lin Xiwan took the radio, tiptoed out of the room, and turned it on by the door.

She wanted to listen to Survivor’s Light radio but didn’t want to disturb her sister.

But she waited all night and didn’t hear the familiar voice of the broadcaster. The station was just static.

This was the first time Survivor’s Light radio had gone silent since its inception.

This made Lin Xiwan even more uneasy. She was planning to take her sister there.

While Lin Xiwan worried, Lin Jiayao had already started a new zombie login.

This time, she didn’t log into the third fungal zombie, but Mask.

At a service area on the Yanghang Highway, under a dim, yellowish sky, Lin Jiayao, controlling Mask, slowly stood up.

Controlling Mask didn’t burden her with unfamiliar memories like the fungal zombies; it was less mentally taxing.

Standing, Lin Jiayao, carrying her loot and eight rifles, looked towards the extraction point.

    「Extraction Time: 4:59:54」
    【Extraction Point: 5km】

    5km, five hours?

Even a leisurely stroll wouldn’t be that slow.

The unusual numbers puzzled and unnerved Lin Jiayao.

It seemed like a generous allowance, but it made her wary.

    Something wasn’t right.

Perhaps something dangerous was waiting for her at the extraction point.

Judging by the direction, it was towards Xin City.

But wasn’t Xin City also suffering from a resource shortage?

She wouldn’t know the true danger until she arrived.

Leaving the service area, Lin Jiayao crawled directly towards the extraction point in Xin City.

Cross-country travel was faster than taking the highway and exiting at a toll station.

As she moved quickly, she thought about the items she needed to collect.

She only had two blood crystals: one in the safehouse for the logged-in zombie, and one in the warehouse.

She wanted to upgrade her Hideout and unlock more zombie control slots.

But besides blood crystals, she also needed other strange items.

Like disposable syringes and sterile bandages for the medical station, or nuts, bolts, and a multi-tool for the workbench.

What could she do with two nuts and bolts?

If the system wasn’t messing with her, then these construction requirements were just arbitrary.

She couldn’t think of any other reason why the system would require these items to build a virtual Hideout.

Soon, Lin Jiayao reached Xin City. The extraction point was only 1km away.

Xin City wasn’t like Yangzhou City; it was just a fourth-tier city before the apocalypse, surrounded by mountains, unremarkable.

Besides abundant natural resources and water, it had no other advantages.

And after the apocalypse, abundant water resources had become a disadvantage.

Such places were breeding grounds for terrifying aquatic and amphibious zombies, and the water contamination was more severe.

The extraction point was close, and she had four and a half hours left.

Lin Jiayao decided to look for a hospital and a hardware store, hoping to gather all the materials in one go.

Nuts and bolts were easy enough; she could scavenge them from something if necessary.

The hardest to find were medicines, especially disposable syringes and sterile gauze, which were usually only sold at the military base camp.

    She couldn’t go there herself.

But there was another place where she might find these things: Survivor’s Light.

Although their future was uncertain, they shouldn’t be short on supplies for now.

After spending half an hour locating a hospital and a hardware store and then ten minutes searching, Lin Jiayao only found a nut, a bolt, and a multi-tool.

She put them in her backpack and continued towards the extraction point.

As evening approached, she didn’t see a single person.

Zombies, hidden in the shadows and inside buildings, began to emerge onto the streets.

Activating Lurker hearing, Lin Jiayao hoped to find some mutated zombies for blood crystals, but strangely, there were very few, perhaps because of the district she was in.

Even after actively searching, she only found five Sprinters, yielding about 20g of blood crystals.

Strangely, there weren’t any Lurkers or other types of zombies.

As if they had been deliberately eliminated.

And she saw large craters in the asphalt, three to four meters wide.

The more she explored, the more uneasy she felt about Xin City.

    She trusted her instincts.

She decided to stop searching for mutated zombies and head straight for the extraction point.

It was better to extract early, refresh the extraction point, and find a more “profitable” location for scavenging.

On her way, she passed a bookstore.

Initially, she’d intended to just walk past, but after a few seconds, she turned back and entered.

In the apocalypse, bookstores were often surprisingly well-preserved. Some books, still in their plastic wrapping, looked brand new.

    Lin Jiayao started browsing.

Her reason for entering was simple.

She wanted to try educating Huayibai, the fungal zombie, but she couldn’t stay with it constantly.

She could, however, choose some books for Huayibai and order it to study them.

Perhaps, after reading these books, Huayibai would develop some understanding of humanity, or even a sense of morality.

She selected a few books from various sections, from sports to philosophy, even children’s books.

She stuffed them into the burlap sack with the magazines and carried it on her back.

She could feel the added weight slowing her down.

Is this the weight of knowledge?

Carrying her loot, when she was about 500 meters from the extraction point, Lin Jiayao felt a tingling sensation on her face.

As if something was watching her.

What’s going on? No feedback from Bone Spike Lurker…

Then, she heard the whooshing sound of something cutting through the air above her.

By the time she registered the sound, it was almost too late. She didn’t have time to analyze it and simply rolled to the side.

    “Boom—”

Her reaction was fast, but not fast enough.

A massive iron ball slammed into the ground, creating a deafening roar.

Along with the shattered ground were almost half of Lin Jiayao’s bone legs and three of her rifles.

After rolling away and discarding the backpack, Lin Jiayao quickly turned, aiming her remaining five rifles at the dust cloud and the cracked, cratered ground.

As the dust settled, a massive zombie, about five meters tall, its body covered in jagged metal shards, its shoulders almost three meters wide, emerged.

Lin Jiayao instantly matched the zombie to a description she’d heard on Survivor’s Light radio.

An Armored zombie, a bone-type, following an evolutionary path almost opposite to that of a Lurker.

Its entire body was covered in thick bone plates. It had no neck, and only half a head, as if the lower half had been absorbed into its body.

From a distance, it resembled a grotesque statue, slow-moving, stiff, unable to bite, but with exceptional defense.

While they couldn’t detect humans as effectively as Lurkers, they had one incredibly troublesome trait.

They would attach scrap metal, steel, or anything hard to their bodies, creating an outer layer of armor.

They were among the few zombies that instinctively used tools.

    “Roar—”

The massive Armored zombie roared at Lin Jiayao and then charged, its thick, bone-reinforced legs pounding the ground.

Lin Jiayao frowned and opened fire.

Five rifles unleashed a torrent of bullets at the charging behemoth.

    “Rat-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat—”

“Clang, clang, clang, ding, ding, clang—”

Chapter 57: An Invitation to Bathe Together

Lin Jiayao’s consciousness sank into darkness, entering the familiar black space.

A grotesque figure stood before her.

It was a mass of intertwined, glowing red tendrils, shaped like a person and wearing human clothes.

Seeing the clothes, Lin Jiayao instantly knew who it was.

    An Xiaoxi.

This was An Xiaoxi without skin, bones, flesh, or organs; the true form of the fungal zombie.

Beside the fungal zombie floated the illusory safehouse.

Inside were the two blood crystals Lin Jiayao had taken from Xie Yi’s safe and a pistol.

The crystals and the pistol occupied all the available space.

Next to the safehouse was a larger, gray box with a 10×10 grid.

    This puzzled Lin Jiayao.

Wasn’t this space supposed to be inaccessible if the zombie had no transferable items?

Then, she realized something and mentally nudged the clothes on the fungal zombie.

    Ugh…

    As expected.

Lin Jiayao abandoned the idea of removing the clothes, simply transferring one of the blood crystals to the warehouse before ending the transfer.

Since Mask hadn’t had the concept of clothing, Lin Jiayao hadn’t realized it could be transferred as well.

But she definitely wouldn’t transfer it.

She didn’t want to be naked the next time she logged into this fungal zombie.

Her consciousness returned to her body, and Lin Jiayao slowly opened her eyes.

Simultaneously, she activated Bone Spike Lurker.

Not having it while controlling the fungal zombie had been like being deaf.

Sensing the world around her again was reassuring.

She decided to rest for a while before controlling Mask or the fungal zombie again.

Sitting up, Lin Jiayao looked around.

    Her sister hadn’t returned yet.

They were leaving soon, so there was no need to clean the room.

And no one would be visiting from next door to keep her company.

For a moment, Lin Jiayao felt lost, unsure what to do.

Then, she thought about the fungal monster, Huayibai, who had so eagerly sought her hug before she extracted.

Did it also feel this way? Was that why it had clung to her so persistently, as if finding a purpose?

Could a zombie experience such emotions?

Would it feel sad that she had deliberately ignored it?

    Could it understand loneliness?

Lin Jiayao didn’t know; she was starting to question her understanding of what a zombie even was.

If it was defined by a lack of humanity, bloodlust, and violence, then Huayibai definitely didn’t fit the criteria.

But if it was based on abilities and characteristics, then she herself would be classified as a zombie.

She shook her head, dismissing these thoughts.

She didn’t want to overthink things. Knowing who was on her side and who wasn’t was enough.

And according to that classification, the fungal zombie Huayibai seemed to be on her side.

It seemed communicative and receptive to instructions. She would observe it for a while longer.

Leaning against the headboard, Lin Jiayao closed her eyes, resting and opening the system’s evolution interface.

    「Please retain your evolution」
「1、【Symbiotic Link Lv.1 (Blue): The split fungal tendrils can connect to other hosts, absorbing or transmitting small amounts of nutrients】」
「2、【Offensive Mimicry Lv.1 (Purple): Allows the dispersed fungal tendrils to attach to the body’s surface and change color, mimicking the appearance of an ordinary zombie to lure enemies into attacking】」
「3、【Myriad Tendrils Lv.1 (Purple): Consume blood crystals to project a large mass of fungal tendrils, enhancing your close-range attacks】」

Perhaps because of the fungal zombie’s current evolutionary stage, there were no new options.

Perhaps she had to reach Huayibai’s level for new evolutions to appear?

The first seemed to be a healing ability, the second was useless to her, and the third was offensive.

No need to hesitate. Choose purple.

After selecting [Myriad Tendrils], Lin Jiayao opened her eyes.

Perhaps because there were no spores actively evolving into tendrils in her body, she didn’t feel the usual warmth.

But the instinctive knowledge of how to use the ability was ingrained in her mind.

Suddenly, footsteps within 150 meters snapped her to attention.

Her sister’s footsteps. She was back.

It was afternoon, the sun beginning to set. It seemed her sister had finished shopping.

But nightfall was still an hour or two away; she was back earlier than expected.

150 meters wasn’t far, and her sister’s steps were quick.

    “Click, click, click—”

    “Click—”

The key turned in the lock, and sunlight streamed into the dimly lit room.

“I’m back!” Lin Xiwan rushed in without even closing the door, looking at Lin Jiayao.

“Yaoyao, sorry I’m late.” She walked over to the bed and sat down beside her sister. “Have you been awake long? Are you hungry? Hey, you took a shower?”

Her voice dropped at the last question, as if slightly disappointed.

“Mm, a little hungry. I showered,” Lin Jiayao answered only the last two questions, avoiding the first.

“Oh… alright. I was planning to shower with you today, but I guess we’ll do it tomorrow then.” Lin Xiwan seemed to recover quickly, already planning for the next day.

“Why?” Lin Jiayao was curious why her sister was so insistent on showering together.

“We’re about to leave on a long journey,” Lin Xiwan said matter-of-factly. “We need to clean ourselves properly, scrub you from head to toe. It won’t be easy to take a shower on the road.”

Her reasoning was sound, and it was true.

There were many uncertainties on the road; they might not even have enough water for showering.

Wherever there was water, there would likely be aquatic or amphibious zombies.

But Lin Jiayao felt that her sister had another motive.

    Was it just her imagination?

Lin Jiayao looked away from her sister’s face and at the box in her hand.

“What’s that?” she asked, having been curious since her sister entered.

“Guess,” Lin Xiwan said with a smile, shaking the box.
