    Chapter 73: Cornered Beast

“♫♫♫I’ve spent all my gold, I’ve spent all my power, I’ve spent all my remaining JUSTICE!♫♫♫”

    “Spent your mother!”

    “Bang—”

    “Buzz—Zzzt—”

The hysterical singing under the tarp was interrupted by a curse and a gunshot.

With a burst of static and a puff of smoke from the speaker, silence fell over the factory courtyard.

Everyone stopped and looked towards the source of the gunshot.

A tall, thin, shaved-headed man, his body covered in a swarm of red moths. Even with his mask, his displeasure was evident.

The moths crawled across his body, their fluttering wings scattering a red powder.

“What’s wrong, brother?” A man in a full-face gas mask cautiously approached the moth-covered man. If Lin Jiayao had been there, she would have recognized him as the one who had spoken to her earlier.

“You’re asking me what’s wrong? Huh?” The moth-controlling man’s voice was tight with anger. He grabbed the masked man by the throat, the moths around him swirling into a frenzy.

“What kind of fucking person did you let in here?”

“Do you know what I just fucking saw? Fucking mushrooms! Mushrooms, do you understand?!” He released his grip and kicked the masked man to the ground.

He was still agitated, unable to calm down.

He tried to think, to plan his next move, but he couldn’t.

    What had he seen?

Through the eyes of his insects, he had seen himself, over and over, being drained of life, a bright red mushroom sprouting from his head.

Exactly like the fungal zombies the Boss had described.

And everyone had dismissed it as another one of her delusions!

He’d thought the fungal zombies were another figment of the Boss’s paranoia, an imaginary enemy, another excuse for her to impose ridiculous rules.

Like that time she’d dreamed about a neck-snapping zombie and ordered everyone to wear the neck braces from the medical supplies, even demanding the craftsmen reinforce them with metal.

Neck braces! They looked ridiculous, and now she wanted metal ones?

Fortunately, they had managed to talk her out of it, convincing her it was just a dream. Otherwise, the Voodoo Cult would have been the laughingstock of China.

They’d all thought the masks and protective gear were just another one of her paranoid episodes, but now… these fungal zombies were real?

There were actually zombies that could mimic humans and turn people into mushrooms?

It wasn’t just the Boss’s fantasy?

This was a serious problem. They had no way to distinguish who was infected.

But one thing was clear: there were two fungal zombies disguised as humans inside the warehouse right now.

They had fooled everyone, almost even him.

He had lingered at the warehouse, hoping to make a grand entrance and perhaps even spend the night with one of the two pretty women inside.

It was worth a shot, right?

But then, he’d discovered they weren’t with the Voodoo Cult, and they seemed to be connected to the two “lambs” they’d captured.

This had excited him. He could take them by force now.

They weren’t with the Cult, and he wouldn’t even have to hand over the two lambs.

But just as he was about to act, his insect swarm had been… annihilated by the black-haired woman.

He hadn’t even been able to resist.

Perhaps because his insects were weak, lacking consciousness, easily drained of their life force.

Whatever the reason, one thing was clear.

His Awakened ability had been completely countered by the fungal zombie inside.

Utterly defeated, unable even to get close.

Except for the few moths tracking the other woman with curly hair, his entire swarm had been wiped out by the woman with straight black hair.

He looked at his dumbfounded men, standing in the rain, and knew this wasn’t the time for explanations.

He raised his pistol and fired three shots into the air. “Everyone, grab your weapons! Bring the gasoline! Burn the warehouse down! Don’t let a single speck of dust escape!”

    “And don’t go inside!”

The moths on his body, defying the rain, took flight, their blood-red wings fluttering above the crowd.

The red powder on their wings rained down, washed by the rain, inhaled by the Voodoo Cult members.

Their eyes turned bloodshot, the interruption from the gunshots and his words forgotten, their frenzy returning.

    “Wooooo!”
    “Ohhhh!”

They roared, rushing towards the factory to retrieve their weapons.

Another group ran towards a different building, carrying out jerrycans of gasoline.

They didn’t question his orders, didn’t think about the fact that burning the warehouse would also destroy their vehicles; they simply obeyed, driven by their frenzied excitement.

They opened the jerrycans, pouring gasoline along the warehouse walls, some even throwing the entire cans inside.

Those who had retrieved their weapons opened fire on the warehouse entrance, some even firing wildly into the air, completely missing their targets.

But the effect was still a storm of bullets.

    “Boom—”

Someone threw a lighter. With a roar, the gasoline ignited, flames engulfing the warehouse.

    “Burn!!! Burn!!! Burn, motherfuckers!!!”

The bald man roared, his fists clenched, as if the intensity of the fire, even in the rain, somehow reassured him.

    “Pitter-patter—”

The swarm of moths fell to the ground like raindrops, lifeless, leaving behind only hollow husks with mushrooms sprouting from their heads.

Like Cordyceps, a strange and unsettling sight.

Cordyceps itself was a fungus that parasitized insects. It was normal for Lin Jiayao’s fungus to have a similar effect.

She wondered if these “Cordyceps moths” were edible.

After eliminating the swarm, Lin Jiayao realized she and her sister had been discovered.

An Awakened, controlling flying moths, had evaded her Bone Spike Lurker and been watching them from the sky.

If it hadn’t revealed itself, she wouldn’t have known she’d been observed the entire time.

    Too careless… too careless…

But she couldn’t be blamed; this was completely unexpected.

    “Thump—”

A soft thud from beneath her.

She looked down and saw the two little girls, huddled together at her feet, their eyes filled with tears.

Lin Jiayao paused, retracting her bone spikes.

She placed a finger to her lips, signaling them to be quiet, and looked towards the back of the warehouse.

    “Sister—!”

She shouted, no longer bothering to whisper.

    There was no response.

The shattering windshield should have been loud enough, but even that hadn’t brought her sister.

    Something was wrong.

She couldn’t hide her abilities any longer.

She had gained these abilities to protect her sister, concealed them to avoid scaring her.

But if she couldn’t even protect her sister, what was the point of hiding them?

    “Rip—”

Bone spikes pierced the skin on the back of her neck.

    “AAAAH—”

The two little girls screamed as terrifying bone spikes erupted from behind Lin Jiayao’s head.

The spikes lifted her, hooking onto the seat back and the broken windshield, pulling her out of the car.

This was Lin Jiayao’s version of Doctor Octopus’s movement method, designed specifically for her.

Like Mask, the bone spikes generated from her neck were the most agile and durable, because Mask only had a head and neck.

So, she couldn’t use a more convenient method, like generating bone spikes from her waist to support her legs.

Using the bone spikes, she quickly crawled towards the source of her sister’s heartbeat.

Her sister’s heartbeat was abnormally fast, so fast Lin Jiayao was worried it might explode.

Using the parked vehicles as anchor points, she moved rapidly. As she climbed, she felt her control over the bone spikes improving.

Her proficiency was approaching that of Mask.

It seemed that the experience gained while controlling a zombie’s abilities carried over to her main body, something the system hadn’t mentioned.

    “Click—”

Nearing her sister’s location, Lin Jiayao took the “Christmas tree” M4 from the warehouse, its many attachments making it look like a festive weapon, and chambered a round, her bone spikes expertly manipulating the charging handle.

    “Click, click, click—”

Reaching the last corner, holding the M4, Lin Jiayao hesitated.

She was afraid of the fear and suspicion she might see in her sister’s eyes.

Using a bone spike to anchor herself to the A-pillar of a nearby monster truck, she cautiously peered around the corner.

    Her eyes widened.

A few moths were circling above her sister’s head, their fluttering wings scattering a “blood mist.”

Looking closer, the “mist” was a fine, blood-red powder.

Lin Xiwan, her head tilted back, her eyes unfocused, was staring at the moths, her body frozen, inhaling the “blood mist” deeply.

As she inhaled the red powder, her mind seemed to unravel, her eyes turning bloodshot, her heart racing.

A thick bone spike erupted from Lin Jiayao’s back, extending over her head, and aimed at the four moths.

    “Thud—”

Four barbed bone spikes, trailing chains, shot out, impaling the moths mid-flight.

She wasn’t confident she could hit such small targets with a rifle, but she could guarantee a hit with her bone spike hooks, even while the moths were moving.

After eliminating the moths, Lin Jiayao held her breath, rushed to her sister’s side, and dragged her away.

“Sister? Sister, what’s wrong? How are you feeling? Can you hear me, Sister?”

Lin Jiayao held her sister, shaking her gently and patting her face.

Lin Xiwan’s unfocused eyes seemed to regain some focus, her breathing becoming rapid, her gaze fixed on her sister.

But Lin Jiayao couldn’t sense any recognition in her eyes.

Her sister hadn’t regained her senses; drool trickled from her lips.

    “Gah—”

Suddenly, Lin Xiwan lunged at Lin Jiayao, her body trembling, trying to tear at her clothes.

The sudden attack surprised Lin Jiayao, but her bone spikes instinctively blocked her sister’s hands.

No… the red powder had driven her sister mad, amplifying her negative emotions.

She was even attacking her own sister.

    “OOOOOH—”

A sudden roar from outside startled Lin Jiayao. She realized the music had stopped.

More and more footsteps within range of Bone Spike Lurker; a large group was approaching.

    “Damn it…”

    The Voodoo Cult had reacted…

Lin Jiayao used her bone spikes to hook onto her sister and dragged her towards the monster truck.

Using her bone spikes to climb, she moved between the vehicles like a giant jumping spider.

In the blink of an eye, she was back at the monster truck. Just then, a bullet hit one of the tires, tearing a hole and causing it to deflate with a hiss, the vehicle tilting to one side.

The two little girls in the passenger seat screamed.

There wasn’t time to comfort them. Lin Jiayao hooked her bone spikes onto their clothes, grabbed them, and quickly retreated towards the back of the warehouse.

    “Clang—”

A metal paint can hit a car behind her, splashing gasoline onto her back, soaking her clothes, a chilling sensation against her skin.

    “Boom—”

    “Burn!!! Burn!!! Burn, motherfuckers!!!”

A roar from outside, followed by an explosion at the warehouse entrance.

The explosion illuminated the entire warehouse. The entrance was blocked by flames.

Lin Jiayao saw a wall of fire, and beyond it, Voodoo Cult members firing wildly at the warehouse doors, their bullets merely chipping away at the concrete, raising dust. They were in a frenzied, almost mindless state.

    There was no escape…

    Trapped.

She couldn’t infect so many people with spores; their combined memories would overwhelm her.

She had to fight her way out.

Lin Jiayao moved away from the edge of the building, avoiding stray bullets.

I have to find a way out… before the entire warehouse collapses…

She understood now why the Voodoo Cult members were in such a frenzy. Like her sister, they had inhaled the blood-red powder.

There was an Awakened among them who could induce this state, increasing their pain tolerance and combat effectiveness.

She placed her rifle aside, took a bulletproof vest from the warehouse, and forcibly put it on her sister, restraining her arms, the vest acting like a straitjacket.

To be safe, she put another, larger AVS vest on top.

Only when her sister could do nothing but roll around did she stop.

Using her bone spikes to stand, Lin Jiayao looked at the two little girls, huddled together in a corner, trembling.

“If you want to live, stay here. Don’t move. Understand?” she said to the older girl.

Picking up her rifle, ignoring their reaction, Lin Jiayao crawled towards the front of the warehouse.

Reaching the roof access, she took a vest and helmet from the warehouse, retracted her bone spikes to put them on, then extended the spikes again and stood.

Using the bone spikes to support herself, she slowly walked to the edge of the roof and looked towards the main entrance.

More people were gathered there than anywhere else, each with a few blood-red moths circling their heads, providing constant mental stimulation.

But even in the chaos, Lin Jiayao instantly spotted a bald head without any moths.

    His shaved head stood out.

And he wore a cloak of moths.

    That must be the Awakened.

Lin Jiayao, supported by her bone spikes, raised her rifle, her cheek against the stock, the crosshairs in the 4x scope settling on the bald man.

The moment she aimed at him, as if sensing danger, the moths around him erupted in a frenzy.

The moths completely obscured her vision. She could only fire blindly at his last known location.

    “Rat-tat-tat—”

The bullets disappeared into the swarm. She didn’t know if they hit.

But the rapidly moving swarm suggested she’d missed.

And her position was now exposed.

She took out all her rifles and sprayed the area with bullets.

    “Rat-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat—”

But the barrage didn’t last even two seconds. She heard a sharp whistling sound.

    “Whoosh—”

She looked towards the sound and saw a bright light with an orange trail, heading straight for her.

    A rocket-propelled grenade.

    Chapter 72: Blood-Colored Moths

“Anything goes! Anything at all, sis!”

The masked man leaned against the car door, his gaze filled with undisguised mockery.

Lin Jiayao initially thought he suspected something, but she quickly calmed down.

Having evolved Bone Spike Lurker, by lightly tapping the car window, she could not only hear the surrounding sounds, but also perceive the terrain and the positions of anyone within a 50-meter radius, like a 3D model in her mind.

She could see that they weren’t carrying any weapons and weren’t making any threatening gestures.

So far, the Voodoo Cult members didn’t seem suspicious.

“Stay away from me. How do I know you’re not infected with the fungus?” Lin Jiayao said with a look of disgust.

She knew the Voodoo Cult was aware of the fungus; she could use it as an excuse. This was the safest approach.

“Tsk…” The masked man’s demeanor changed instantly. He kicked the car door, denting it.

“What bullshit fungal zombie? Have you even seen one? That’s just the Boss’s paranoia acting up, making us all wear these damn masks…”

His voice was filled with resentment. He turned and waved to his men. “Let’s go.”

Before leaving, he added, “My men are going to party tonight. We’ll fix your car tomorrow.”

Then, he and his men disappeared into the rain, ignoring the two “close confidantes of the Boss.”

He respected the Boss, but that didn’t mean he approved of all her actions.

He admired the Voodoo Cult she had created, it gave him a sense of belonging, and he was also impressed by her leadership and charisma.

But he couldn’t stand her paranoia and her occasional dissociative episodes.

Not just him, but even the Boss’s most loyal followers suffered because of it.

The paranoia was manageable. Aside from occasionally imposing “maximum security” measures, the Boss had found a way to cope: surrounding herself with pure young women.

In the Boss’s mind, only the presence of pure young women could suppress her urge to flee or kill.

The most difficult to deal with were her dissociative episodes.

A cowardly personality that constantly hid from the world, a bloodthirsty, violent personality, and the Boss’s true, composed personality.

Every personality shift threw the Voodoo Cult into chaos, and this was also why they hadn’t been able to conquer Survivor’s Light.

But despite the Boss’s erratic behavior, no one dared rebel.

Because the Boss was the symbol of the Voodoo Cult. Without her, the cult would collapse.

So, even if the masked man was annoyed, he only complained verbally.

After the Voodoo Cult members left, Lin Jiayao breathed a sigh of relief.

“Are they… gone?” Lin Xiwan asked, her forehead still resting on the steering wheel, glancing at her sister.

“Yes.” Lin Jiayao nodded and activated Bone Spike Lurker, scanning the warehouse for anything useful.

“I thought I heard a little girl crying earlier…” Lin Xiwan said. “And the fungus… The Voodoo Cult doesn’t know about it? Don’t they listen to Survivor’s Light’s broadcasts?”

From her position, she hadn’t seen what was happening on her sister’s side, only heard snippets of the conversation.

But she knew her sister had handled the situation perfectly, deceiving the Voodoo Cult members.

“They’re Brother Gou’s daughters,” Lin Jiayao said. “But don’t go out yet.”

“Why?” Lin Xiwan, still tense, asked instinctively.

“Brother Gou’s daughters have seen us,” Lin Jiayao said, rolling up the window.

She couldn’t risk the little girls recognizing them and calling out “Sister.” That would be a disaster.

“Then what do we do?” Lin Xiwan asked. “There weren’t any Awakened among the partygoers or the men who came over.”

    She hadn’t been idle.

She had been using her blood crystal sensitivity to check for Awakened. There hadn’t been any among the partygoers or those who questioned them.

If there had been, her sister would have been exposed.

“No Awakened…?” Lin Jiayao pursed her lips and looked at her sister.

She saw the same answer in her sister’s eyes.

    Fight.

Knowing there were no Awakened among this Voodoo Cult group, Lin Xiwan’s fear subsided.

The dread of the Voodoo Cult, instilled by years of radio broadcasts, began to fade.

They were just a group of mentally unstable, well-equipped ordinary people.

As her fear dissipated, Lin Xiwan began to assess their surroundings.

    She looked around the warehouse.

Various modified vehicles, belonging to the Voodoo Cult, were parked neatly inside, seemingly using the warehouse as a garage.

Besides the vehicles, there were no other supplies, likely having been transported elsewhere.

It was highly probable that this Voodoo Cult group was just a small detachment left behind to occupy the factory, the supplies already moved with the main force.

This was good news for the sisters.

It meant they didn’t have to face any Awakened with strange abilities; they only had to worry about gunfire.

The biggest problem now was—they were low on ammunition.

They only had the one Type 95 rifle Lin Jiayao was holding, not even a full magazine, let alone spare ammunition.

Fighting with just that was suicide – even if she could kill one with each shot, there were too many of them.

They needed to find more weapons, and before the Voodoo Cult members realized something was wrong.

Sometimes, no words were needed. A single glance was enough for the sisters to understand each other.

“I’ll keep watch, Sis,” Lin Jiayao said, looking towards the warehouse entrance through the rear window. She was ostensibly using her eyes to watch, but she had activated Bone Spike Lurker.

“Mm.” Lin Xiwan nodded, climbed out of the monster truck through the broken window, and ran towards the back of the warehouse, scanning the roofs of the parked vehicles.

The Voodoo Cult’s monster trucks didn’t have trunks; they stored everything on the roof. Any firearms would be visible.

    But then, something unexpected happened.

The two little girls, who had been huddled together, suddenly stood up and ran towards the warehouse exit.

Lin Jiayao noticed immediately. “Don’t run outside! Come back!” she shouted through the open window.

But hearing her voice, the two girls ran faster, as if trying to escape.

Perhaps their father had taught them this survival tactic, but he could never have imagined they would encounter the Voodoo Cult.

Running in Voodoo Cult territory was like waving a red flag in front of a bull.

And their escape would likely attract the Voodoo Cult. If she let them escape, there would be no way to explain it when they were brought back.

How could a Voodoo Cult member let someone escape right in front of them?

    It would be a disgrace.

No, I can’t let that happen.

Her sister was too far away to stop them. Lin Jiayao opened the car door and shouted, “Brother Gou’s daughters! Come back!”

Hearing “Brother Gou,” the older girl paused and looked back at Lin Jiayao.

“…Big Sister?” The older girl, with a ponytail, instantly recognized Lin Jiayao and stopped running.

Lin Jiayao and Lin Xiwan’s faces were unforgettable, even with gas masks.

Good thing they hadn’t seen her while the Voodoo Cult members were here…

“Come back quickly, don’t let them see you,” Lin Jiayao beckoned.

The two girls hesitated, then ran towards her.

“Get in.” Lin Jiayao helped them climb into the car. After they were both inside, huddled under the dashboard, she closed the door.

Only then did she breathe a sigh of relief.

The loud music and the singer’s raspy voice continued; they hadn’t been alerted.

If those two girls had run outside… It was a good thing they had trusted her.

Just as Lin Jiayao was about to comfort them, she noticed something on the window.

A moth with blood-red wings, its antennae twitching, clinging to the glass.

    A… moth?

Even Lv.3 Bone Spike Lurker couldn’t detect something as small as an insect crawling, especially not in the heavy rain.

She hadn’t even noticed it approach.

    But then, her heart sank.

One, two, three… more and more moths appeared, crawling onto the car. Lin Jiayao quickly rolled up the window, sealing the car, but the window was soon covered with a swarm of moths.

After a moment, the moths moved, arranging themselves to form three words and a symbol.

    “Big Sister?”

The question mark, formed by the moths, rotated, switching between a regular “?” and an upside-down “¿.”

    Lin Jiayao’s heart plummeted.

They’ve been discovered… There’s an Awakened among them!

    I have to warn Sister!

Ignoring the risk of alerting the Voodoo Cult, she had to get this message to her sister.

    “Bang—”

She fired a shot at the driver’s side window, the sound echoing through the warehouse. Then, she leaned out the other window and shouted, “Sister! Watch out for the insects! There’s an Awakened!”

The moths quickly moved to the windshield, forming a new message.

    “Worried about her? ^^”

The emoticon, like a mocking grin, seemed to taunt her worry. The moths’ wings fluttered, like a vibrating, sardonic smile.

Then, ignoring Lin Jiayao, the moths flew towards the back of the warehouse, towards Lin Xiwan.

The more you worry, the more I’ll destroy – a very Voodoo Cult sentiment.

Realizing the Awakened’s intention, Lin Jiayao didn’t hesitate. Fungal tendrils spread across her eyes, her vision turning crimson.

Bone spikes erupted from her hand, like Wolverine’s claws, and she punched through the windshield.

Then, facing the swarm of moths that had stopped, seemingly startled, she slowly removed her gas mask.

Taking a deep breath, Lin Jiayao exhaled sharply.

A gust of wind, carrying scarlet spores, erupted from her mouth. The first spore reached a hovering moth.

The tiny spore, upon contact, instantly drained the insect’s life force. Tendrils spread through its body, and a small, blood-red mushroom sprouted from its head.

The mushroom cap burst open, releasing even more spores.

In an instant, the moth withered and fell to the ground, a lifeless husk, leaving only spores floating in the air.

Inside the factory, in the center of the canning area, far from the Voodoo Cult party, a man lay submerged in a fish tank filled with countless white eggs.

Beside him was a well-preserved vintage record player, playing smooth blues music, and a glass of red wine.

If the setting were a luxurious villa, and the egg-filled tank a regular bathtub, it would have been a scene of elegant indulgence.

Suddenly, the man in the tank opened his eyes.

    “Cough, cough, cough—”

He coughed violently, two blood-red moths expelled from his mouth.

His eyes were wide with shock and disbelief.

    “Fucking… mushrooms… cough… Fuck… the Boss’s fungal paranoia was real… Fuck!!!”

He scrambled out of the tank, shaking off the eggs clinging to his body, ran to a workbench, and quickly put on a full-face gas mask.

He breathed a sigh of relief.

Then, naked, he grabbed two blood crystal stones from a nearby box and hurled them at the fish tank.

The tank shattered. Fueled by the blood crystals, the eggs hatched, the larvae taking a bite of the crystals before pupating.

From pupa to moth in a second. The blood-red moths emerged.

Swarms of them landed on the man, covering him like a crimson cloak. Wearing this cloak, he ran towards the Voodoo Cult members partying in the rain outside.

    Chapter 71: Voodoo Secrets

The truck was about to run them over. Lin Xiwan instinctively shifted into reverse, but just as she was about to slam on the gas, her sister grabbed her hand.

“No fuel, Sis…” Lin Jiayao glanced at the fuel gauge, meeting Lin Xiwan’s terrified gaze.

The needle was on empty. They couldn’t outrun the truck.

And they were facing the Voodoo Cult… Any attempt to escape would only excite them, possibly even prompting the entire convoy to join the chase.

    Now, they could only gamble.

If necessary, even if it meant revealing her zombie abilities, Lin Jiayao would get her sister out of this alive.

“Sis, don’t be afraid.” Lin Jiayao squeezed her sister’s hand, her voice gentle, trying to calm her down.

“Just lower your head and gently bang it against the steering wheel. You can tremble too. Just follow my instructions, okay?”

Seeing the panic in her sister’s eyes, Lin Jiayao pushed her head down, her forehead resting on the steering wheel.

At least her expression wouldn’t be visible.

Lin Xiwan was terrified. No matter how powerful the zombie, she wouldn’t be afraid; there was always a chance to escape or fight back.

But there was no escaping the Voodoo Cult. She didn’t care about her own fate, but she wouldn’t let her sister suffer at their hands.

    She was ready to fight.

But hearing her sister’s instructions, she obeyed, resting her forehead on the steering wheel.

Glancing at her sister, she was surprised to see a cold resolve in her goggle-covered eyes. The brief panic was gone.

Her composure… was even stronger than her own, after five years in the apocalypse.

Lin Jiayao took out the Voodoo Cult keys, hesitated for a second, and placed the V-E-031 key on the dashboard in front of her sister, keeping the V-D-021 key for herself.

    “Honk—”
    “Screech—”

The truck’s brakes screeched, its headlights blinding.

Lin Jiayao fumbled with the glove compartment, grabbing a handful of syringes and pills and scattering them on the dashboard.

    “Woohoo—”

The truck’s headlights switched off, and a tall, thin figure jumped out, did a few somersaults, and then grabbed onto their window.

“Knock, knock, knock—Is anyone there? Hello? Anyone in there?” The man’s face was painted white, but the rain was washing it away.

He knocked on the window, mimicking the sound with his mouth, his brow furrowing.

    Two women?

Although the Voodoo Cult wasn’t sexist, female members were rare… They were usually assigned to the Boss, as personal guards.

And what were they doing here?

He jumped down, examining the vehicle. Despite the scratches and dents, it was definitely a Voodoo Cult modified car.

As he jumped back up to the window, he saw the black-haired girl in the passenger seat aiming a rifle at him.

Before he could react, she fired.

    “Rat-tat-tat-tat—”
    “Shatter—”

Four quick shots, one at each corner of the window, shattering the glass.

The man, startled, lost his grip and stumbled back, almost falling.

He quickly steadied himself, grabbing the door frame.

“Fuck yo— Hahaha! Nice shot, sis! You’ve got good aim.” He’d been about to curse when he saw the gold key dangling from the girl’s rifle, still swaying from the recoil.

Holy shit, was she one of the Boss’s Awakened guards?

“Tow us, please. Out of gas. She’s high as a kite.” Seeing he hadn’t noticed anything amiss, Lin Jiayao shook her rifle slightly, the key spinning, obscuring the inscription.

The man followed her gaze to the driver’s seat.

The woman was trembling, her head banging against the steering wheel; she did indeed look high.

He didn’t know her trembling was from fear.

He saw another key on the dashboard, amidst the scattered syringes and pills, confirming his suspicion.

Definitely one of the Boss’s people. He’d never even seen the Boss’s women, let alone his leader.

And the nonchalant, cold demeanor of the girl in the passenger seat didn’t arouse any suspicion.

“Sure thing, sis. I’ll… I’ll tow you.”

He gave an okay sign, let go of the door frame, and jumped down.

Returning to his truck, he found a tow rope, attached it to the monster truck’s and his truck’s bumpers, gave another okay sign to Lin Jiayao, and then carefully reversed the truck.

He didn’t dare drive too fast and anger the two Awakened, especially the one in the driver’s seat, who was clearly high; there was no telling what she might do.

As he reversed, a voice came from his walkie-talkie.

    “Zzz… Who’s that outside?”

He pressed the button and replied, “The Boss’s little sister.”

    “Oh?”

The voice on the other end seemed surprised. After a moment, it said, “Treat them well. I’ll be there soon.”

    “Beep—Beep—Beep—Beep—”

    The truck’s reversing alarm blared.

Each beep brought them closer to the factory gate, closer to the dragon’s den.

Lin Xiwan, still slumped against the steering wheel, glanced at her sister, who seemed calm and composed in the passenger seat.

“Yao… what do we do…?” She whispered, her voice close to tears. “We’re going inside…”

“Yao… hold onto your gun. If they try anything, I’ll fight them. Then you can…”

    Her voice trailed off.

Even if she fought, she couldn’t kill them all.

And even if she held them off, her sister couldn’t escape.

A sense of helplessness washed over her.

She wished she were a C-rank, or even a B-rank, Awakened, capable of overpowering them.

    But she wasn’t.

She was just a D-rank, her blood crystal metabolism slow, her progress limited.

In other words, not very talented.

    She began to blame herself.

Seeing her sister’s despair, Lin Jiayao’s heart ached.

Her sister bore so much pressure to protect her, always hiding her vulnerabilities, silently enduring.

But facing this seemingly inescapable situation, her emotions finally surfaced.

“Sister… I’m here,” Lin Jiayao said softly, patting her sister’s back. “Trust me.”

A system interface appeared before Lin Jiayao’s eyes.

She switched to the login screen, held her rifle, and leaned against the seat.

She still had the fourth zombie slot unused… Fuzhou City was available. If she was lucky, she could control a mutated zombie there.

If she was even luckier, it would be close by, and she could do something.

But the new zombie assignment was completely random.

    A gamble.

Lin Jiayao selected the fourth zombie. Her consciousness shifted.

Slowly opening her eyes, she saw Fuzhou City in the rain, dilapidated buildings and wandering Biters.

She clenched her fists, looked around, and her heart sank.

    Such weakness…

    She’d lost the gamble.

Not only was it a Biter, but it was also located within the city.

There wasn’t time to upgrade it. She didn’t even bother checking the extraction point or time and immediately switched back to her main body.

The fourth zombie was useless; she would just let it wander until it despawned.

Mask was in Xin City, An Xiaoxi in Donghai City, and her third, the Hive Zombie, in America.

Now, she was on her own.

If the Voodoo Cult discovered her disguise, she would unleash everything in her warehouse, controlling her bone spikes and firing all eight M4s.

Explanations could wait until they survived.

The truck had towed their monster truck to the factory gate.

The window on her sister’s side was shattered, the metallic scent of blood strong even through the rain.

Among the mangled corpses hanging on the gate, Lin Jiayao saw Brother Gou’s head, his expression frozen in shock.

His head was positioned in the center of the right gate, surrounded by… well, let’s just say his severed genitalia… it looked like a grotesque sunflower.

The twisted aesthetic of the Voodoo Cult.

Blood still dripped from the corpses, washed by the rain; the massacre had been recent.

There were no female corpses, and she didn’t see Brother Gou’s daughters.

    Lin Jiayao’s heart sank. A bad premonition…

Remembering the two adorable girls who had shyly offered her candy, her knuckles turned white on the rifle’s grip.

Inside the factory grounds, the music was even louder.

A makeshift stage had been set up in the central courtyard, a waterproof tarp overhead, a band playing beneath it.

And outside the tarp, Voodoo Cult members reveled in the rain.

Some were injecting themselves with drugs, their bodies trembling; some were engaged in unspeakable acts with a limbless woman; most were simply holding bottles, swaying to the music.

The truck, towing their monster truck, expertly reversed towards the factory warehouse, the driver clearly skilled.

Inside the warehouse, sheltered from the rain, the incessant drumming on the roof finally stopped.

The truck driver jumped out and approached their window.

    “Knock, knock, knock—”

He knocked on Lin Jiayao’s window. “Anything else I can help with, Boss’s little sister?”

    “Fuck off.”

    “Right away!”

Receiving the expected response, he didn’t linger, jumping down and running back towards the party.

    He hadn’t sensed anything unusual.

A drug-addled lunatic of a driver, and a cold, aloof young woman who didn’t flinch at riding with him and casually fired a rifle…

Wasn’t that cool? As a Voodoo Cult driver, he thought it was incredibly cool, perfectly in line with his image of the Voodoo Cult: insane and entertaining.

After he left, the surrounding area fell silent. Lin Xiwan stopped banging her head against the steering wheel and turned to her sister.

“What… what do we do now…?” she whispered, her voice trembling.

She now instinctively looked to her sister for guidance.

Perhaps because of her sister’s unnerving calmness in the face of the Voodoo Cult.

“Don’t worry… I’m thinking…” Lin Jiayao, her hand on the door, didn’t look at her sister. Through Bone Spike Lurker, she heard approaching footsteps.

    Multiple people.

    Had they been discovered?

She opened the warehouse interface, the bones in her back shifting slightly, ready for combat.

Through the rearview mirror, she saw several figures in full protective gear approaching through the rain, carrying burlap sacks.

    They weren’t carrying guns?

    “Sis, someone’s coming.”

Lin Jiayao relaxed slightly, lowered her rifle, placing it in the blind spot beside the door, and waited.

The man in the full-face mask stopped at the side door and knocked.

    “Knock, knock, knock—”

Lin Jiayao lowered the window slightly but didn’t open the door.

She glanced at the man, her expression indifferent, and remained silent.

She wasn’t intentionally being aloof; she just didn’t know what to say.

In this situation, less was more.

Sensing her aloofness, the masked man chuckled. “Hey, Boss’s little sister, how’s the Boss doing lately? The brothers are worried.”

“Cut the crap,” Lin Jiayao replied, detecting the man’s flippant tone.

“No, really, we’re genuinely worried about the Boss,” he shrugged, seemingly exasperated. “We’re afraid she’s having another episode.”

He leaned against the car door, his posture relaxing. “Maybe you should talk to her, you know, help her realize she’s just… sick… Mentally ill.”

He tapped his masked head. “Schizophrenia and paranoia, isn’t it?”

“I’ll convey your message,” Lin Jiayao said calmly. “Every word.”

“Uh… on second thought, maybe not.” The masked man straightened up, scratching his head through the mask. “Right, we caught two sheep today, a little tribute for the Boss.”

He snapped his fingers, and his subordinates opened the burlap sacks, dumping the contents onto the ground.

    “Thud.”

    Two drenched figures fell.

    Two little girls.

One of them hit her head on the ground. They huddled together, sobbing uncontrollably.

    “Waaaaah—”

    “Damn it, shut up.”

    “Bang, bang, bang—”

The masked man fired a few shots into the air, silencing their wails. They continued to sob softly.

“Fucking hell, only a paranoid schizophrenic like the Boss would keep little girls around, talking about how pure and innocent they are.”

He stepped on one of the little girls’ heads and sneered, “Lucky them, having a pussy is all it takes to live the high life with the Boss.”

His words were laced with resentment; he seemed disgusted by this.

He looked at the girl inside the car and said with a forced smile, “Not you, of course, sis. You understand. It’s not fair to us male followers.”

“Why don’t you just off yourself,” Lin Jiayao replied flatly.

“Hahaha, maybe next time, maybe next time.” A superior’s joke, even a bad one, required a polite chuckle.

He then looked at the car door, his voice curious. “Why aren’t you getting out, sis? We’ll fix your car and replenish your supplies.”

“We’re having a party tonight. Care to join?”

“Anything goes! Anything at all, sis!”

  • Sickly Girl Doesn’t Die in Zombie Simulator 70

    Chapter 70: Voodoo’s Rampage

    “It’s okay, Sis. I’m here.”

Hearing her sister’s comforting words, feeling the warmth of her hand, Lin Xiwan felt tears welling up.

She squeezed Lin Jiayao’s hand, holding it tightly, but didn’t respond.

She didn’t know what to say. She felt completely lost.

There was nowhere left to go.

Seeing her sister’s despair, Lin Jiayao worried.

She had to calm her down.

“Sis, remember that quote?” Lin Jiayao squeezed her sister’s thigh, trying to get her attention. Her hand was resting on her sister’s leg.

“Lu Xun said, ‘If there are no torches after this, I will be the only light.’”

“We can’t go to Survivor’s Light, but at least we’re alive. And where there’s life, there’s hope, isn’t there?”

Lin Jiayao paused before continuing, “Maybe… maybe I’ll become a strong Awakened someday. Anything is possible.”

Lin Xiwan, lost in her thoughts, looked at her sister.

Although she knew her sister’s words were meant to comfort her, she was still surprised by her optimism. She’d expected her sister to be even more pessimistic than her.

Unlike her, an Awakened, her sister was truly helpless in this world, unable to survive without her protection.

If she died, her sister wouldn’t last long.

Her sister’s optimism seemed to affect her. Lin Xiwan exhaled slowly, closed her eyes, and tried to compose herself.

She didn’t release her sister’s hand.

After a while, she opened her eyes and looked at her sister’s face.

“Let’s go back,” she said. “To the cannery, to find Brother Gou, to help them rebuild, and gather some supplies.”

“And then… we can search the radio for other larger settlements, or wait for Survivor’s Light to recover…”

    Lin Jiayao nodded slightly.

This was the most sensible course of action. They lacked the essential supplies for a long journey.

They could return to the highway and go to the cannery in Fuzhou City to find Brother Gou’s convoy.

Brother Gou’s invitation and his subsequent kindness had left a good impression on them.

She couldn’t judge whether he was a good or bad person; after all, he was planning to attack another settlement.

But she could tell he was a relatively selfless person, a good quality for a leader.

They used some colorful clothes as towels, drying their hair slightly, ate some lunch, and then huddled together, napping for an hour to recover their energy.

Lin Xiwan woke up first, let her sister sleep, and then went to the monster truck.

Carrying a metal pipe, she was going to remove the “V” symbols from the vehicle.

She would remove all Voodoo Cult markings, including the sofa and flag on the roof, to avoid being attacked at the cannery.

After spending almost half an hour scraping off the symbols and stickers, removing the flag and sofa, the drenched Lin Xiwan returned to the room.

Seeing her sister still asleep, she didn’t wake her, but carefully covered her face and hair with clothes before carrying her downstairs and placing her in the passenger seat.

After making sure she had everything, Lin Xiwan started the engine.

Shortly after, Lin Jiayao woke up.

“We’re leaving,” Lin Xiwan smiled, pinching her sister’s cheek.

“Oh…” Lin Jiayao nodded, rubbing her temples.

She had spent the past hour controlling Mask, now in its Armored zombie form, scavenging in Xin City.

Before scavenging, she had retrieved the gold key she had dropped when Mask was injured, the one on the shopping mall floor, and put it in the safehouse.

And while controlling Mask, she had sensed her main body being moved, so she’d found a safe place and switched back.

    “Vroom—”

Lin Xiwan drove out of the residential complex, carefully maneuvering around overturned cars and debris, heading back towards the highway.

Lin Jiayao opened the glove compartment again.

Hearing the click, Lin Xiwan glanced over. “What’s wrong, Yaoyao?”

“Didn’t Survivor’s Light say to take precautions?” Lin Jiayao took out two sets of gas masks, goggles, and earmuffs, handing one to her sister.

“Oh, right, they have everything here…” Lin Xiwan stopped the car, carefully put on the gas mask, followed by the goggles and earmuffs.

She didn’t know how dangerous or widespread the fungal zombies were, but taking precautions was always a good idea.

A question arose in her mind.

Why… did the Voodoo Cult seem to know about the fungal zombies before Survivor’s Light?

They had already stockpiled gas masks and other protective gear before she’d even encountered their bodies and vehicle.

They must have known about the fungal zombies for a long time.

But after putting on her gas mask, she saw her sister reaching into the glove compartment again.

“Careful with the needles,” Lin Xiwan quickly grabbed her sister’s hand.

She didn’t want her sister pricking herself with a potentially contaminated needle.

“What do you need? I’ll get it for you,” she said, leaning over to look inside the compartment.

“I just wanted to see what those were…” Lin Jiayao said, pointing into the compartment, seemingly slightly upset.

    Lin Xiwan followed her finger.

“What is this?” Curiosity piqued, she took out the objects.

    Three gold keys.

Exquisitely crafted, seemingly polished, with symbols of unknown meaning.

    V-E-030, V-E-031, V-D-021.

“Are these… identification keys?” After a brief glance, Lin Xiwan lost interest.

They were likely used by the Voodoo Cult for identification.

V for Voodoo Cult, E and D for rank, the numbers for their order within the ranks.

Just Voodoo Cult trinkets, useless to them.

“They’re worthless,” she said, about to toss them out the window. Keeping them was like holding onto a hot potato.

But Lin Jiayao grabbed her hand, stopping her.

“Give them to me,” she said, blinking at her sister. “They’re pretty.”

Looking into her sister’s eager eyes, Lin Xiwan softened.

She realized she’d never really brought back any nice jewelry or trinkets for her sister. It was normal for a girl her age to like pretty things.

“Remember not to show them to anyone. I’ll find a way to melt off the symbols when we reach a camp,” Lin Xiwan said, handing the keys to her sister, not giving it much thought, and then started the engine again.

The rain had lessened considerably, and she increased their speed.

The small town they’d passed through earlier was completely submerged now, forcing them to take a slight detour.

    But Fuzhou City wasn’t far.

During the drive, Lin Jiayao completed an extraction with Mask.

She chose to evolve Bone Spike Lurker to Lv.3, allowing her to simulate the surrounding terrain within fifty meters by emitting vibrations.

She had also controlled Mask, in its Armored zombie form, to fight another, smaller Armored zombie, winning the brutal melee and obtaining another blood crystal.

She hadn’t put this crystal into the safehouse but had Mask consume it before extracting.

She had a feeling Mask could evolve again.

As expected, after the extraction, the “Mask (Available for Login)” status changed to “(Evolving).”

The estimated time was twelve hours; it would be complete around midnight.

After dealing with the login, Lin Jiayao opened her eyes.

Two logins in quick succession would usually leave her mentally drained, almost to the point of unconsciousness, but she felt surprisingly okay, just slightly tired.

    She rubbed her temples.

Seeing this, Lin Xiwan asked, “Awake? How are you feeling?”

“Much better,” Lin Jiayao nodded. Being frail had its advantages; she didn’t have to explain why she needed so much sleep.

“Almost there, and we’re almost out of fuel,” Lin Xiwan said, glancing at the gauge. “This thing really guzzles gas… not even 200 kilometers on a full tank.”

A normal car could travel 400-500 kilometers on a full tank. This thing had been almost full, and now, less than 200 kilometers later, it was almost empty.

    A real gas guzzler.

Either the fuel tank had been modified to be smaller, or the engine had been unnecessarily souped up – especially with those ridiculously tall exhaust pipes that even spat flames, probably burning excess fuel.

The Voodoo Cult’s thinking was truly incomprehensible.

Normal people prioritized fuel efficiency; the Voodoo Cult seemed to revel in wasting it.

They didn’t seem to take the apocalypse seriously, treating it as an opportunity to indulge their twisted desires.

Lin Jiayao looked out the window. Through the dimly lit sky, she could see they were on a county road.

Not as wide as the highway, but wide enough for two trucks to pass each other. On both sides were flooded fields.

“The cannery is in this village,” Lin Xiwan explained, seeing her sister’s curiosity. “Before the apocalypse, it was cheaper to build factories in villages. Lower land prices, lower compensation costs in case of pollution.”

“Oh…” Lin Jiayao nodded and placed her hand on the window, activating Bone Spike Lurker.

Visibility in the rain was only about forty or fifty meters; she could use Bone Spike Lurker to scout ahead.

They didn’t know how the attack on the cannery was progressing, but with Brother Gou’s well-equipped and numerous men, even the children armed, the cannery likely didn’t stand a chance and had probably surrendered.

And the feedback from Bone Spike Lurker seemed to confirm this.

She could see the outline of the large factory and the warehouse, within 150 meters.

And she didn’t hear any gunfire, only human voices, and even music playing.

    Were they already celebrating?

“Hoo… It seems Brother Gou succeeded,” Lin Xiwan said, relieved, looking at the dozen or so jeeps parked in front of the factory. “They’re already inside. Just in time, we’re almost out of fuel.”

“But why aren’t they driving inside?” she wondered, the long line of jeeps obscuring the factory entrance.

And the music from inside the factory… wasn’t it a bit too loud?

They could even hear the lyrics clearly from the road, as if it were a concert.

Suddenly, a bright white light shone from the factory roof, illuminating the area around them.

    A searchlight.

Lin Xiwan rolled down the window, waved, and shouted, “We’re friendly!”

“Something’s… something’s not right, Sister… I have a bad feeling…” Lin Jiayao tapped on the window rapidly, her voice urgent.

She had finally discerned another sound amidst the muffled voices and music.

The familiar roar of car engines.

And the music inside the factory suddenly stopped.

    A man’s voice echoed from a loudspeaker.

“More annoying bugs at the gate…”

Then, the sound of electric guitars, followed by a raspy shout from the loudspeaker.

“No! Not bugs! Our brothers have returned! Open the gates! Welcome them! Make way for our brother’s ride!!!”

    “Crash—”

The cacophony of death metal resumed, seemingly celebrating the arrival of those outside. With a loud crash, a modified heavy truck smashed through the factory gates, revealing the mangled corpses hanging behind them.

    “Make way for our brothers!!!”

    “Roar—”

The truck accelerated, scattering the smaller jeeps, the sound of scraping metal echoing.

The truck’s massive tires seemed to crush the sisters’ hearts, their breaths catching in their throats.

There were no cannery workers, no Brother Gou’s convoy.

    It was the Voodoo Cult.

They had taken over the cannery.

  • Sickly Girl Doesn’t Die in Zombie Simulator 69

Chapter 69: Where Does the Road Lead?

Passing through the dense crowd, Lin Jiayao led Huayibai out of the plaza.

Since Survivor’s Light was going to broadcast a warning to stay away from Donghai City, her sister would definitely hear it on the car radio and change their plans.

If her sister wasn’t coming here, there was no need for Lin Jiayao to waste any more effort on Survivor’s Light.

She could even try to find a way to disguise herself as an Awakened—after all, besides Survivor’s Light, no other place had the equipment to distinguish between zombies and Awakened.

The difference between an Awakened and an Infected was their reaction to blood crystals.

If the body rejected the blood crystals and the blood containing them, it meant the person was immune and an ordinary human.

If the blood crystals fused with the body and blood, but the person entered brain death, their body mutating and losing human consciousness, their blood now containing a virus that could infect others, this was an Infected, also known as a zombie.

If the blood crystals fused with the body and blood, enhancing it without affecting consciousness, this in-between state was an Awakened.

So, both Awakened and zombies had blood crystals in their blood; the difference was the presence of the virus.

Survivor’s Light’s infection detectors worked on this principle. The small needles in the wristband pierced the skin and analyzed the blood.

No blood crystals meant ordinary human; blood crystals meant Awakened; blood crystals and the virus meant zombie.

Awakened and zombies, due to the blood crystals, had a natural attraction to each other.

The closer they were, the stronger the attraction, especially between higher-level Awakened and higher-level zombies.

Just like blood crystals fusing together to form a blood crystal stone.

Was the total amount of blood crystals on Earth fixed? Would this mean fewer and fewer, but increasingly powerful, zombies, until only one remained, having consumed all the blood crystals, achieving ultimate evolution?

Lin Jiayao had considered this possibility before, but it was just speculation; she had no proof.

Now, she just needed to find a way to have blood crystals flow through her own blood, to become an Awakened in her sister’s eyes, so she could openly use her abilities.

    What abilities, you ask?

    A magic pocket, perhaps.

A bottomless pocket from which she could pull out food, water, guns, blood crystals, anything.

As long as she didn’t reveal any zombie-related abilities, her sister would believe her.

Then, she could just be a walking supply depot and sharpshooter.

Thinking this, Lin Jiayao felt that surviving the apocalypse wasn’t so difficult after all.

Although she and her sister wouldn’t be going to Survivor’s Light, there was still one problem to solve here.

    Huayibai.

It was a relatively high-level fungal zombie; Lin Jiayao could see the spores surrounding it like a shield.

As long as Huayibai remained in Survivor’s Light, they would never be able to solve the fungal zombie problem.

“Yibai, when I’m ‘away,’ can you still sense where I am?” Lin Jiayao asked.

“When Mommy is away?” Huayibai thought for a moment and nodded. “I can vaguely sense a direction, but it’s blurry; I can’t be certain.”

    It could sense her location?

Lin Jiayao had a bad feeling about this.

“Then, can other fungal zombies at your level also sense my presence?” she asked.

“Yes,” Huayibai nodded. “I went to the government building to find you after sensing your presence. They’ll probably all come looking for you too.”

“Hiss…” Lin Jiayao took a sharp breath.

Not only Huayibai, but all other evolved Blood Orb Fungus zombies would also come looking for her?

    This wasn’t good.

What if her sister’s body couldn’t resist the spores? If a fungal zombie got close and infected her, it would be a disaster.

“If I told you to come to me, how long would it take?” she asked.

“About twenty days?” Huayibai said after a moment of thought. “Yibai walks slowly.”

Twenty days of non-stop travel to reach her?

    That was good news.

At least she had enough time to find a solution.

    But she needed a failsafe.

“Can you come to me and… intercept any other spores heading my way?” Lin Jiayao asked. “Can you stop them?”

Huayibai seemed to ignore the rest of her question.

It ran to her, its small fists clenched against its chest, its eyes wide. “Mommy, are you serious? Can I really come find you?”

“Yes… you can come. But once you’re within a kilometer of me, you must control yourself and not spread any spores, understand? You must control it, or you can’t come any closer.”

“Mm-hmm, Yibai understands,” it nodded vigorously.

“Good.” Lin Jiayao was slightly relieved. “Do you have any other questions?”

Huayibai paused, thought for a moment, then nodded.

“Mommy, the Coca-Cola recipe is written on the bottle. Why can’t other humans make it themselves? Why do they have to search for it and buy it? Are they stupid?”

Lin Jiayao took a deep breath, almost choking.

“I didn’t mean those kinds of questions,” she said, resisting the urge to pinch its cheek. “I meant, do you have any questions about what I just said?”

“Yibai understands everything,” Huayibai nodded and then, seeing Lin Jiayao quicken her pace, it hurried to keep up. “But Yibai still doesn’t understand what a cobra without glasses is called—Mmmppph—”

Lin Jiayao’s hand covered its mouth, and she dragged it silently towards the extraction point.

Reaching the extraction point in the mall’s underground parking lot, she finally released Huayibai.

In the sunlight filtering through the windows, Lin Jiayao noticed Huayibai’s face was slightly flushed.

Looking closer, it was the blood-red tendrils spreading beneath its skin, creating the illusion of a blush.

“What’s wrong?” Lin Jiayao asked, initially thinking she had hurt it.

“Nothing, it’s nothing,” Huayibai said softly, its voice barely a whisper. “It’s just… being carried by Mommy made me so happy.”

    “Uh…”

    Lin Jiayao was speechless.

    Was that… carrying?

She hadn’t been gentle; she couldn’t understand why Huayibai considered being dragged like that… carrying.

Perhaps, in Huayibai’s mind, being dragged was the same as being carried.

The extraction timer started its countdown. Lin Jiayao looked at Huayibai and said, “Come find me.”

Then, her consciousness faded, returning to her body.

    “Rumble—”

The drumming of rain against the window, accompanied by thunder and the monster truck’s engine.

But Lin Jiayao didn’t move. She looked at the evolution options.

    「Please retain your evolution」
「1、【Symbiotic Link Lv.1 (Blue): The split fungal tendrils can connect to other hosts, absorbing or transmitting small amounts of nutrients】」
「2、【Offensive Mimicry Lv.1 (Purple): Allows the dispersed fungal tendrils to attach to the body’s surface and change color, mimicking the appearance of an ordinary zombie to lure enemies into attacking】」
「3、【Visual Illusion Lv.1 (Purple): Upon contact with eyes, the released spores generate a colorless film, altering the target’s vision. The longer the duration, the stronger the rejection reaction, eventually dissolving and being expelled with tears】」

She had seen the first two before. The third was interesting.

This was the fungus’s ability to make itself invisible, the reason for Huayibai’s confidence.

A form of invisibility. As long as the colorless film on the eyes remained undetected, the invisibility would persist.

The Lv.1 duration wasn’t long, and the rejection reaction would eventually expel the film, but it was still a useful ability for surprise attacks.

Without hesitation, Lin Jiayao chose the third evolution.

As before, a wave of warmth passed through her body, and the evolution was complete, quicker than a sneeze.

Lin Jiayao pulled down the damp hood and looked towards her sister.

“Awake?” Lin Xiwan asked, instantly noticing her sister’s movement.

“Mm.” Lin Jiayao nodded and rubbed her eyes, as if just waking up.

Looking at the car’s center console, her heart sank.

She had been planning to turn on the radio, but she suddenly remembered that this Voodoo Cult vehicle was different…

The speakers were external, and her sister had destroyed them.

How could she casually turn on the radio and let her sister hear Survivor’s Light’s warning about Donghai City?

    They didn’t have a high-frequency radio anymore.

How could she tell her sister?

She couldn’t just say she’d been there, could she?

Even though she actually had been.

“Perfect timing. We’ll reach the city soon. We’ll find a place to rest and dry our clothes.”

    Lin Xiwan sighed softly.

She’d been searching for a car in the rain since dawn, finally finding one around noon, picking up her sister, and driving until now, her clothes constantly wet.

Although her Awakened physique prevented her from getting sick, the discomfort was real.

She wanted to find a clean, dry place to rest.

And of course, to prevent her sister from catching a chill, she would hold her close, sharing her warmth.

But Lin Xiwan’s plan to search for a suitable building was interrupted by her sister.

“Sis, there’s a clothing store, let’s check it out,” Lin Jiayao said, pointing to a store by the road.

“Clothing stores on the main streets would have been looted long ago. There won’t be anything left,” Lin Xiwan said without turning her head.

Lin Jiayao looked at her sister, puzzled. “But… it’s a women’s clothing store.”

In the apocalypse, besides Awakened, stronger men had a higher survival rate.

With the skewed gender ratio, most women’s clothing stores remained untouched due to lack of demand.

“Oh… a women’s clothing store? I didn’t see that.” Lin Xiwan turned the car around and drove towards the store.

Stopping in front of the store, Lin Xiwan said, “Wait here,” jumped out of the car, smashed the display window with her elbow, and went inside.

Moments later, she returned with a large bag of clothes, still in their plastic packaging.

She stuffed the bag into the limited space behind the driver’s seat and started the engine again.

“Why are there so few zombies in Xin City…? Let’s not go too far in. We’ll find a place nearby.” Looking at the relatively empty streets, she started searching for a residential complex.

And Lin Jiayao kept an eye out for any buildings with strangely bulging metal plating, warning her sister to avoid them.

Lin Xiwan didn’t think much of her sister’s behavior, dismissing it as childish curiosity.

Her sister had rarely left their room, let alone visited a new city. A little excitement was normal.

Soon, they found a mid-range residential complex. After scouting ahead to ensure it was safe, Lin Xiwan carried their belongings and her sister towards a relatively clean apartment.

After changing into dry clothes, she also helped Lin Jiayao change into a clean dress, settled her on the wiped-down sofa, and then began her habitual search of the apartment.

    She quickly found something unexpected.

    A radio without batteries.

Luckily, she also found a pack of unopened batteries in a cabinet below the table where the radio had been placed.

    “Yao, look what I found~”

Lin Xiwan walked towards Lin Jiayao, fiddling with the radio, inserting the batteries and expertly tuning the frequency, almost instinctively landing on Survivor’s Light.

    “Huh? Are they broadcasting?”

Hearing voices coming from the radio, Lin Xiwan smiled.

But as she sat down beside her sister and listened, her smile froze.

    “Zzz… Please avoid traveling to Donghai City… Survivor’s Light… zzz… has encountered a catastrophic crisis… Please believe that we will overcome this… zzz… We haven’t given up… zzz…”

“Fungal zombies… zzz… please take precautions such as wearing masks…”

Lin Xiwan could barely hear the rest of the broadcast. She turned to her sister, stunned.

Lin Jiayao was also looking at her, seemingly waiting for her to speak.

“Yao…” Looking into her sister’s clear, black eyes, Lin Xiwan couldn’t find the words.

She felt more lost than her sister, her thoughts in turmoil.

The beacon that had guided her had crumbled; her destination was gone.

Where could she take her sister now?

Suddenly, she felt her sister’s warm hand on her head, gently stroking her hair.

    “It’s okay, Sister. I’m here.”

Chapter 68: The Light of Humanity

Hearing her sister’s words, Lin Jiayao, ignoring the swaying of the vehicle, immediately started searching for a way to turn off the blaring music. Countless Biters were wading through the water towards them; it seemed her sister had driven all the way here with the music blasting. No wonder she had been so panicked and hurried. Fortunately, the deep water slowed down the already slow Biters.

Lin Jiayao quickly found a black wire dangling from a hole in the roof, connected to the center console.

    Could this be it?

She tugged at the wire, but it wouldn’t budge.

“Sis, I think it’s this wire,” Lin Jiayao said, showing her sister the wire.

“No, that’s not it, I already tried. It’s for the strobe light on the roof.” Lin Xiwan glanced at the wire and then returned her attention to the road.

The music changed to another earsplitting song.

“⚡⚡⚡Quickly draw that incredibly sharp sword⚡⚡⚡”
“⚡⚡⚡An unbelievable light shines from within me⚡⚡⚡”

Unable to bear it any longer, and seeing that the area was relatively safe, Lin Xiwan slammed on the brakes.

She climbed out the window and looked at the two large speakers on the roof.

The metal-encased speakers were welded to the roof, their power cables seemingly running through the metal and connecting directly to the console. This monster truck was designed for blaring rock music.

    “Thump—”

Lin Xiwan punched one of the speakers. The metal dented, the speaker seemingly damaged, parts of the voice coil and diffuser scattering.

She climbed onto the roof and delivered a similar blow to the other speaker. The world finally fell silent.

    Should have done that sooner.

    “Hoo—”

Lin Xiwan breathed a sigh of relief, climbed back into the driver’s seat, and pressed the accelerator.

    “Roar—”

The modified engine roared to life, flames shooting from the long exhaust pipes as the monster truck accelerated, charging towards a group of Biters.

The town was small, the zombies sparse. The monster truck easily plowed a path through them, leaving the town and reaching the highway entrance.

    “Vroom—”

Finally reaching the open highway, the only sound now, besides the rain, was the roar of the engine. This vehicle was loud, not to mention the smoke billowing from its exhaust pipes. Lin Jiayao suspected this gas-guzzler had been specifically designed to attract attention. She could imagine the chaos a convoy of these vehicles would create on the highway.

“Yao, see if you can find anything useful in the car, I haven’t had a chance to search it yet,” Lin Xiwan said, her mood lightening as they drove smoothly on the highway, the excitement of finding the vehicle finally surfacing.

    They were incredibly lucky!

Finding a working vehicle, even one belonging to the “V” symbol gang, was a godsend. It would take them north, away from the typhoon.

She’d had enough of being drenched.

    “Okay.”

Lin Jiayao nodded, also curious about what they might find.

She opened the glove compartment, which seemed to have been modified to hold more items.

Inside were three unopened gas masks with filters, three new eye masks, and three new sets of earmuffs, seemingly spares.

Besides these, there were various disposable syringes, small vials, and colorful pills.

Lin Xiwan, glancing at the contents, frowned slightly.

“Don’t bother, there’s probably nothing useful.” She reached over, closed the glove compartment, and returned her attention to the road.

In her eyes, her sister was still a child, and these weren’t things a child should see.

Lin Jiayao also didn’t want to rummage through it; she might accidentally prick herself with a needle.

But listening to the engine, a new question arose in her mind.

“Sister, how much fuel do we have?” She couldn’t see the fuel gauge from her seat.

“Um… let me see… Almost full, why?” Lin Xiwan replied without looking, remembering checking the gauge when she took the vehicle.

“This thing must consume a lot of fuel,” Lin Jiayao said.

    Lin Xiwan nodded. “It does…”

Then she realized something wasn’t right.

She slowed down, opened the door, and climbed onto the roof.

A large bag of supplies was tied there. She untied it.

Braving the rain, she carried the bag down, opened it, and spread out the contents.

A half-eaten box of military rations, a few packs of expired instant noodles, two severed legs wrapped in plastic, and a dirty silicone doll.

Lin Xiwan frowned. Such a large bag, meant for travel supplies, and this was all it contained.

And most importantly… where was the gasoline?

    Where had they refueled?

    Only three possibilities.

    Scavenged.

    Stolen.

    From the convoy.

Sustaining such a fuel-guzzling vehicle solely through scavenging or theft seemed unlikely.

She would like to believe they had been incredibly lucky, but it wasn’t realistic.

They were likely part of a convoy.

    The Voodoo Cult’s convoy.

She didn’t know why these three Voodoo Cult members had been separated from their group and killed by Survivor’s Light, but the Voodoo Cult convoy was likely still in the province.

Lin Xiwan quickly discarded the severed legs and the doll.

The bag, now much smaller, was tied back onto the roof, and she returned to the driver’s seat.

“We have to go… now. The Voodoo Cult convoy is probably still in the province, maybe even close,” she said, restarting the engine.

The monster truck’s tires spun, splashing water, and then they sped towards Xin City.

“Yao, how are you feeling? You’re soaked again…” While driving, her primary concern was encountering the Voodoo Cult, her secondary concern her sister’s health. A night in the rain, sleeping without blankets, and then more rain today. Even a healthy person would struggle, let alone her frail sister.

“I’m fine, just a little sleepy,” Lin Jiayao said, her eyes drooping.

Lin Xiwan touched her forehead and felt her heartbeat, reassured.

“Go to sleep then. I’ll find a place to dry our clothes later and wake you up,” she said softly, her voice soothing.

“Mm.” Lin Jiayao nodded, pulled the hood of the cloak over her face, and closed her eyes.

The rain had lessened; the further they got from Yangzhou City, the lighter it became.

Lin Xiwan decided to find a place in Xin City to rest, to avoid making her sister sick.

They still had a long way to go…

From Yangzhou City to Donghai City was almost 1400 kilometers, about a 16-hour drive under normal conditions.

Even before the apocalypse, it would have been a three-day drive. In these unpredictable, dangerous conditions, it would take at least a week.

And that was assuming they had enough supplies.

If not, they would have to stop and scavenge – where would they find enough food after five years of the apocalypse?

Most of the easily accessible supplies would have been looted long ago.

Lin Xiwan pursed her lips. Without sufficient supplies, the future seemed bleak.

Meanwhile, Lin Jiayao, her eyes closed, had switched her consciousness to the fungal zombie, An Xiaoxi.

Still disoriented from the shift, she opened her eyes to see a magnified face inches away from her own, staring curiously.

Huayibai, kneeling on her lap, seemingly trying to figure out where “Mommy” had gone.

Lin Jiayao picked it up by the collar and placed it on the ground.

She had to hurry. Driving in the heavy rain was slow; they would reach Xin City in about half an hour.

She needed to assess the situation in Donghai City and log into Mask within that time.

They were about to enter Xin City; she might even encounter Mask there. She remembered Mask, controlling an Armored zombie, had extracted in a basement somewhere in the city.

She didn’t know what would happen if she encountered Mask, but she wouldn’t approach it willingly.

She didn’t know the state of a zombie after extraction.

    Defensive? Idle?

Could she control it? Would Mask be hostile?

She would test this later, not now.

Mask was too powerful, especially now, controlling an Armored zombie.

If she accidentally activated an unlogged-in Mask, and it turned hostile, she wasn’t sure if she and her sister, even with her abilities revealed, would be a match for it.

Mask, protected by the Armored zombie’s body, wasn’t afraid of bullets.

And even if they managed to destroy the Armored zombie, a freed Mask would be even more dangerous.

Small, agile, hardened bones, fast regeneration, mid-range attacks, able to control your dead teammates…

If a game designer created a boss like this before the apocalypse, they would be crucified.

The main reason she needed to log into Mask was to retrieve something.

The three Voodoo Cult gold keys.

She wasn’t sure if they would be useful, but they were better than nothing.

She could even try impersonating a Voodoo Cult member. Perhaps those lunatics would actually believe it?

Don’t think it’s impossible. Those anti-human psychos were capable of anything.

Survivor’s Light regularly reported on the Voodoo Cult and had even interviewed a survivor who had escaped from them.

His escape story had been so ridiculous that Lin Jiayao hadn’t believed it at first.

He had been an ordinary person, trying to cross the highway on foot, when he’d encountered the Voodoo Cult.

Seeing their convoy and their flag, he had given up and lain down to wait for death.

But instead of running him over or killing him, they had helped him up.

They had even given him food and water after confirming his mental state.

He wanted to die, but they wouldn’t let him.

But when they tried to convert him to their cult, he refused.

And for that refusal, they branded a “V” onto his face. That mark, a symbol of everything Survivor’s Light and other survivors despised, had filled him with despair.

And then… they had left, leaving him with enough supplies to last a week.

It was so absurd it sounded like fiction.

After this incident, Survivor’s Light had concluded that the Voodoo Cult’s main characteristic was “contrariness” and advised ordinary people encountering them not to run, but to play dead.

The Voodoo Cult thrived on defiance. If you wanted to die, they might not let you.

But if you ran, they would definitely kill you.

But even after publicizing this information, no one had managed to escape the Voodoo Cult.

Because they would assess your mental state. If you showed any fear, you were dead.

Remaining calm in the presence of the Voodoo Cult was difficult for ordinary people.

Lost in thought, Lin Jiayao reached the combat department building.

To her surprise, it was empty.

Not just the building, but the entire street.

    What had happened?

    …A purge?

    Lin Jiayao frowned.

This was the most logical course of action, but also the one she wanted to avoid the most.

Not everyone infected by the fungus was completely lost.

As long as the fungus hadn’t completely taken over their body and consumed their brain, they were still… human.

Their eye structure might have been altered, preventing them from seeing things the fungus didn’t want them to see.

The difficulty lay in distinguishing between full infection and partial infection.

Some partially infected had already had organs replaced by the fungus. Although, thanks to Huayibai’s intervention, the infection wouldn’t progress, removing the fungus now might cause organ failure.

Huayibai’s earlier attempt to have everyone expel the fungus had almost killed these partially infected.

But now, Lin Jiayao was more concerned about where everyone had gone.

Since the fungal zombie didn’t inherit Bone Spike Lurker, she had to ask Huayibai.

She learned that her “daughters” were at the plaza, but Huayibai didn’t know what they were doing there.

The plaza was only about two kilometers away from the combat department, a short distance. She should be able to get there and back within half an hour.

    Lin Jiayao decided to investigate.

Reaching the plaza, she slowed down.

    A large crowd had gathered.

The entire plaza was filled with people, over ten thousand, likely the entire population of Survivor’s Light.

They were all standing silently, looking towards the center. Lin Jiayao now realized they were forming a long line.

Everyone wore disposable masks, normally useless in the apocalypse, now seemingly a valuable commodity.

Their ears were plugged with cotton or foam, not completely blocking sound, but preventing things from entering.

Their eyes were covered with goggles or swimming goggles. Those without were covering their faces with cloth, their hands held by those with goggles.

They were all silent, as if afraid of something spreading.

    What’s going on?

Lin Jiayao was curious. She knew these precautions were essentially useless.

After so many years, whoever was going to be infected was already infected.

She pushed through the crowd, towards the center of the plaza.

She saw dozens of people maintaining order, the people in line approaching them one by one.

A person in full protective gear, holding a watch-like device, pressed it against each person’s hand, neck, and chest.

Lin Jiayao noticed blood welling up where the black back of the watch touched their skin.

    Are they… testing?

    “Beep, beep—”

After the test, the person in protective gear seemed relieved and directed the person to the right.

Lin Jiayao then noticed that the plaza was divided into two sections.

A red cloth and a green cloth marked the division.

A woman, her face covered with cloth, was led, trembling, to the testing area.

The watch was pressed against her hand, no reaction. Her chest, no reaction. Finally, her neck, and the watch flashed red.

“Beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep—”

The device beeped rapidly. “Lower your face covering, please. To the left,” the tester said softly.

The woman froze until the man holding her hand patted her back.

She trembled, unwrapped the cloth from her face, her eyes bloodshot, her breath coming in ragged gasps.

“Sir…” Tears streamed down her face. She reached up and blindly wiped her eyes, her voice filled with despair. “Am… am I infected? Am I… really dead?”

    “Am… am I really dead?”

“How can I be dead? I’m still thinking, I can still control myself… I’m not infected, how can I be dead?”

Overwhelmed, the woman collapsed, sobbing uncontrollably.

She couldn’t understand how Survivor’s Light, which had seemed so vibrant just yesterday, had become like this.

Years of belief and hope, shattered in an instant.

A red-haired woman emerged from the group of Awakened and crouched beside her, offering comfort.

It was Jiang Chun. Lin Jiayao recognized her; she was a close friend of this body’s original owner.

Lin Jiayao couldn’t hear their conversation from this distance, but the woman gradually calmed down, stood up, and walked towards the infected section on the right.

After comforting the woman, Jiang Chun stood up, taking a deep breath.

She looked at the fearful crowd and then at An Xiaoxi, standing near the front, without any protective gear.

Seeing An Xiaoxi, Jiang Chun felt a pang of grief.

But she quickly composed herself and smiled faintly at An Xiaoxi.

Lin Jiayao didn’t react; she knew Jiang Chun already knew that An Xiaoxi was dead. There was no need to pretend.

Jiang Chun didn’t immediately eliminate the infected. Instead, she raised her right hand and looked at the frightened crowd.

They had once been comrades, close friends. And now, they were facing this desperate “sorting.”

Jiang Chun took a deep breath, clenched her right fist, and shouted, “Don’t be afraid!”

Her voice echoed through the silent plaza, capturing everyone’s attention.

“This sorting is just a new technology from the research department, to quickly identify those infected by the fungus.”

“Being infected doesn’t mean there’s no hope! Please believe us! We won’t abandon anyone!”

“You’re not dead! You’re still alive! You can still think! You can still feel! You… you’re just sick!!!”

“Please cooperate with our research. We’ll find the source of this disease and cure you! We’ll announce on the radio tonight that we’re temporarily suspending new arrivals and will focus all our efforts on supporting the research department.”

“Senior Gu Wangran sacrificed his life to reveal the truth to us, and I will dedicate my life to continuing the light of hope he ignited.”

“Remember, we are Survivor’s Light… dawn hasn’t broken yet, we cannot fall!”

Jiang Chun’s eyes were bloodshot. She raised her right hand and punched the air. “For humanity!”

    Silence fell over the plaza.

Slowly, one by one, everyone raised their right hand, whether they wore masks or not, until the entire plaza was a sea of raised hands.

A solemn, tragic feeling spread through the crowd, as if reminding everyone of their initial purpose in joining Survivor’s Light.

In the solemn silence, Lin Jiayao turned, took Huayibai’s hand, and walked away, melting into the crowd.

Survivor’s Light had chosen the slowest, most agonizing path, attempting to defuse a bomb before it exploded.

Like moths drawn to a flame.

  • Sickly Girl Doesn’t Die in Zombie Simulator 67

    Chapter 67: Control Center

    “Pitter-patter, pitter-patter—”

In her hazy dream, Lin Jiayao heard the soft drumming of rain against the window.

The gentle sound, like ASMR, lulled her into a deep sleep.

    “Boom—”

A sudden, loud clap of thunder jolted her awake.

She instinctively reached out to sit up and realized she was covered with the familiar black cloak.

Her clothes were wrinkled, as if wrung out with great force, likely by her sister while she was asleep.

Although the large t-shirt was still slightly damp and cold, at least it wasn’t clinging to her skin.

She sat up, moved her legs to the side, and leaned against the sofa back.

A rifle leaned against the sofa, within easy reach.

And the nightstand had been moved closer, with a can of luncheon meat and half a bottle of water on top.

Her sister had left them for her.

    Where’s Sister?

Lin Jiayao scanned the dilapidated room.

    Her sister wasn’t there.

Lin Jiayao placed her hand on the sofa and activated Bone Spike Lurker.

Only the sound of rain and the clattering of a metal sheet somewhere, buffeted by the wind.

    Nothing else.

The storm raged outside. Even before the apocalypse, she hadn’t seen such persistent rain.

She picked up the rifle, checked the full magazine, and felt a little more secure.

Her sister hadn’t taken the food or water, only the car keys.

Perhaps, seeing that she was still asleep, her sister had decided to search for the Voodoo Cult’s car on her own.

After a night of torrential rain, Lin Jiayao only hoped the town wasn’t flooded.

She called out the system and opened the Hideout.

She had gained a considerable amount of blood crystals and wanted to see if she could upgrade anything.

To her surprise, besides the [Warehouse], [Medical Station], [Workbench], and [Training Grounds], there was a new building she could construct, located right in the center of the X-shaped underground structure.

Curious, Lin Jiayao clicked on it.

[Prerequisite for unlocking Control Center met: Vigor Lv.1]
    [Control Center Lv.1 (Unbuilt)]
[Description: Unlocks more zombie login slots; allows the host to switch between the main body and logged-in zombies; halves login cooldown time.]
    [Construction requires: Blood Crystal x10]

Ten blood crystals, as expensive as the training grounds.

    But its functions were powerful.

Halving the login cooldown time from 24 hours to 12?

And being able to switch between her main body and the logged-in zombie without having to extract?

This would greatly enhance her survivability. She no longer had to worry about being vulnerable while logged in.

The reason she couldn’t see the Control Center before was probably because she hadn’t met the prerequisite.

It seemed the prerequisite was Vigor.

And this was just the Lv.1 Control Center. Upgrading it might unlock even more powerful functions.

She made a mental note of the link between Vigor and the Control Center.

Now, she was ready to go all in and build it.

She had exactly ten blood crystals.

She had been considering building the training grounds first and becoming a sharpshooter.

No need to hesitate now. The Control Center was the priority.

With a thought, the ten blood crystals in the warehouse, stored inside one of the ammo vests, disappeared, transferred to the Control Center.

A strange mechanical platform rose from the center of the Hideout, a holographic screen projecting from it, and the construction was complete.

    “So simple…”

Lin Jiayao muttered to herself, picked up the can of luncheon meat, and opened it.

She wanted to test the new function, but first, she had to replenish her energy.

She hadn’t eaten since yesterday and had been constantly on the move, cold and wet. She was starving.

It was a miracle she hadn’t gotten sick, considering her frail body.

After finishing the luncheon meat and drinking the water, Lin Jiayao closed her eyes.

    「No.1: [Mask] (Available for login)」
「No.2: [An Xiaoxi] (Available for login)」
    「No.3: [Unnamed] (Available for login)」
    「No.4: 🌐 (Available for login)」

One more slot unlocked, no other changes.

After a moment of hesitation, Lin Jiayao chose An Xiaoxi.

Of the four available slots, An Xiaoxi was the easiest to extract – she was in Donghai City.

And the leader of Donghai City was now her “daughter”; there wouldn’t be any problems. It was perfect for testing the Control Center’s functions.

After selecting An Xiaoxi, Lin Jiayao’s consciousness sank into darkness.

But this time, before regaining vision, a holographic screen appeared in the upper left corner of her view.

It was a miniature map with a 150-meter radius. Lin Jiayao could see her main body and all infected within that range.

A system prompt appeared. She skimmed it and summarized the information.

If a new infected entered the map’s range, or if an infected came within 50 meters of her main body, a yellow alert would flash in the upper left corner.

And if an infected approached within 10 meters, a red alert would flash.

    Quite thoughtful.

Lin Jiayao slowly opened her eyes, the familiar setting of an old kitchen appearing before her. A thick layer of dust covered everything, even the air smelled of it.

Sunlight filtered through the grimy windows, indicating it was daytime.

She was in the kitchen of the old café, the extraction point from her previous session.

Sitting on a stool, the constant drumming of rain was gone, replaced by an almost unsettling quiet.

But she felt something in her lap.

As she looked down, her chin bumped against a warm, fluffy head.

    Huayibai?

The little girl was sitting on her lap, shoes kicked off, her legs dangling.

It was holding a children’s picture book, reading intently, until her head bumped against Lin Jiayao’s chin. It looked up, blinking.

“Mommy~” Seeing Lin Jiayao, Huayibai smiled sweetly.

It looked so much… like a real child.

Lin Jiayao had intended to resist the urge to pet its head, but she couldn’t help herself.

Compared to Huayibai, her third zombie in America was far more disturbing.

As she stroked Huayibai’s soft hair, she looked towards the extraction point.

    「Extraction Time 4:59:51」
    【Extraction Point: 800m】

The extraction point was getting closer and closer, and the time allotted was increasingly generous.

It seemed the system was accommodating her fungal zombie form, ensuring that even as a slow-moving blob, she could still reach the extraction point.

Recalling how slowly she’d moved as a tendril mass, Lin Jiayao no longer found the 5-hour duration excessive.

    “Pat, pat—”

Lin Jiayao patted Huayibai’s waist. “Get up, let’s go.”

“Okay.” Huayibai closed the book, opened its mouth wide, and a mass of tendrils emerged, engulfing the book.

Then, as if nothing had happened, it jumped off Lin Jiayao’s lap, stood up, and looked at her obediently.

Only then did Lin Jiayao notice Huayibai’s distended belly, stretching its short dress, the raised hem revealing a glimpse of white thighs and stockings.

    “Holy shit…”

Lin Jiayao couldn’t help but curse – she was usually more composed.

But seeing this – a little girl, no older than eleven or twelve, looking at you with an innocent smile, her belly swollen as if pregnant – would make anyone curse.

What had happened while she was gone?

Then, remembering the book Huayibai had just swallowed, Lin Jiayao placed a hand on her forehead and sighed.

Seeing her reaction, Huayibai tilted its head and asked, “Mommy, what’s wrong?”

Lin Jiayao reached out and rubbed Huayibai’s belly, feeling the rectangular shape of the book beneath the skin.

This little thing was using its body as storage space.

She glanced at the discarded burlap sack on the floor, picked it up, opened it, and held it out to Huayibai.

    “Spit out the book.”

    “Okay.”

Huayibai nodded obediently and opened its mouth.

But this time, as its mouth opened, its entire body split down the middle, countless tendrils connecting the two halves, like a lotus root snapping but its strings still attached.

A pair of tendril-formed hands lifted the stack of books from its belly and placed them in the sack.

Lin Jiayao’s eye twitched, watching this.

This little thing… always managed to surprise her with its bizarre behavior.

“Don’t use your body to store things anymore, understand?” Lin Jiayao tied the sack and handed it to Huayibai.

“Oh…” Huayibai clearly didn’t understand why, its voice slightly sullen, but it still obeyed.

It slung the sack over its shoulder and followed Lin Jiayao out of the kitchen.

Leaving the kitchen, Lin Jiayao didn’t head towards the extraction point.

There was still plenty of time. She wanted to check on the situation in Survivor’s Light.

She wanted to see if the uninfected Awakened had taken any action after her warning.

If they hadn’t, then she would have to find a way to announce Survivor’s Light’s downfall through the radio, warning others not to go to Donghai City, and telling her sister to change their plans.

Just as she was about to leave the café, she noticed a green dot rapidly approaching on the minimap in the upper left corner.

It was her main body’s location. Someone was approaching her.

    Sister?

Lin Jiayao quickly turned, said “Wait,” sat back down on the kitchen stool, and closed her eyes.

The minimap zoomed in. Her vision blurred, and when she opened her eyes again, she was back in her dusty room.

    “Rumble, rumble—”

The loud thunder jolted her fully awake.

Through Bone Spike Lurker, she heard rapid footsteps ascending the stairs.

She raised her rifle, aiming at the door, and then lowered it as her sister appeared.

“Yao! I found it! The car!!!” Lin Xiwan looked at her sister anxiously, shaking the car keys.

Despite finding the car, she wasn’t excited, but rather… apprehensive.

Ignoring her soaked clothes, she rushed over and kissed Lin Jiayao’s cheek.

Then, she quickly gathered their things, stuffed the canned food and water back into the backpack, slung it over her shoulder, and returned to the sofa.

She helped her sister put on the cloak, pulled the hood over her face, and then, lifting her, ran downstairs.

Her urgency wasn’t due to excitement about the car.

    But because…

Lin Jiayao, in her sister’s arms, pulled down the hood and looked ahead.

She felt a chill run down her spine.

The murky floodwaters on the first floor had almost reached her sister’s thighs. In this situation, forget a car, even if she could fly…

Then she saw the vehicle parked at the entrance, its engine roaring.

It had massive wheels, almost as tall as Lin Jiayao, with a small driver’s seat and an even smaller passenger seat on top.

It reminded her of an excavator.

A pile of luggage was strapped to the roof, along with a tied-down sofa, seemingly the third seat.

And beside the sofa were two tall exhaust pipes with speakers attached, each displaying a large, red “V” on a black background.

Lin Xiwan carried her sister through the floodwaters, placed her in the passenger seat, closed the door, then climbed over the hood and slipped into the driver’s seat through the window.

    “Hiss—”
    “Roar—”

Only then did Lin Jiayao notice the zombies in the water, moving towards the vehicle with a strange, underwater running motion.

The horde… how did they get past…?

As Lin Xiwan inserted the key and pressed the accelerator, Lin Jiayao finally understood.

    “ROAR!!!!!”

The modified engine and exhaust pipes roared to life, and the speakers on the roof blared unfinished rock music.

“Sunflower!!! AAAAH!!! If you grow in the darkness!!!”

“Sunflower!!! AAAAAH!!! Will you be afraid!!!”

With the music blasting, Lin Xiwan slammed on the gas, the monster truck driving over the submerged Biters, its spinning tires sending sprays of blood and pus flying.

“Yao! Figure out how to turn off this damn music!!!”

Chapter 66: Armed in the Rainy Night p2

Lin Xiwan ripped off a piece of the bumper and climbed into the truck bed.

Looking at the charred remains, listening to the rain drumming on the metal roof, she used the bumper as a shovel, digging through the ashes.

Beneath the surface layer, she saw some recognizable colors.

In the light from the men moving the truck, she could see that it had been filled with crates of canned food, stacked inside wooden boxes.

Perhaps the ones in the center hadn’t been burned.

    Lin Xiwan dug more vigorously.

Soon, the corner of an intact box appeared.

    Yes!

Although charred on the outside, it hadn’t been burned through. The contents should be fine.

Lin Xiwan’s eyes lit up. Careful not to damage the box, she removed the charred cans and charcoal around it and lifted it out.

    “Crack—”

She broke the seal on the charred box. Her expression turned slightly odd.

Inside weren’t cans of food, but bottles of wine.

Packed in sawdust, surprisingly well-preserved, only a few broken.

She rummaged through the remaining debris, but there was nothing else salvageable.

A beam of flashlight shone on her.

She straightened up and looked towards the light. “Brother Gou?”

“We cleared a path on the other side. How about here?” Wang Dongfeng asked, looking at the box in her hands.

    He raised an eyebrow.

    A case of wine?

Not very useful for two young women, although it was technically clean water.

They couldn’t survive on wine alone.

“Impressive, Team Leader Lin, you found a case of wine.” Wang Dongfeng grinned and took out a bottle. “Sell it to me? Twenty cans of food, six bottles of water, and a travel bag.”

Lin Xiwan was slightly taken aback.

Not because the offer was too low, but because it was too… normal.

There were about eleven or twelve intact bottles in the box.

Back at the camp, this could be traded for much more. To those who wanted it, a single bottle could fetch 5g of blood crystals.

But this wasn’t the camp. Wang Dongfeng could have simply taken the wine without offering anything, and she wouldn’t have been able to complain.

He had saved them from the horde; if it weren’t for him, they would still be running for their lives.

“Silence means consent.” Wang Dongfeng chuckled, shaking the bottle, and then turned to leave.

Raising the bottle in one hand and holding the megaphone in the other, he shouted, “Brothers, we found a case of wine! We’ll rest at the entrance of Yutian Town tonight! Drinks for everyone!”

    “Woohoo—”
    “Ohhhh!”

Cheers erupted from the military base camp members, lifting their spirits after the harrowing escape.

This is what a true leader is like, Lin Xiwan thought, understanding why an ordinary person like him could lead an entire camp.

His easygoing nature and the decisiveness he’d shown earlier, prioritizing the others’ safety over his own son’s, weren’t qualities most people possessed.

Lin Xiwan carried the box of wine towards the jeep.

Reaching it, she found the trunk was already open. She placed the wine inside and climbed in, closing the trunk door behind her.

    “Thump—”

Wang Dongfeng got into the passenger seat, comforted his two daughters, who had fallen asleep shortly after his return, and then closed the door.

“Driving at night is too dangerous. We’ll rest at the highway exit about 2km ahead. You can spend the night in the car. We’ll part ways tomorrow morning.” Wang Dongfeng explained their plans as he started the jeep.

Lin Xiwan’s route was to turn right, pass through Yutian Town, and head towards Xin City. Wang Dongfeng’s convoy was going left towards Fuzhou City.

“It’s fine. I’ll take my sister to find a house in the town for the night,” Lin Xiwan declined his offer.

Knowing he was a good person and feeling comfortable staying with the convoy were two different things.

“Suit yourself,” Wang Dongfeng said casually. “Pick your favorite flavors.” He then started driving.

2km wasn’t far. Soon, the convoy stopped at a highway exit.

Left was the main road; right was the road through Yutian Town, towards Xin City.

The jeep slowly came to a stop, the other vehicles ahead turning off their engines.

Lin Xiwan and Lin Jiayao had already chosen a bag of canned food and water, packed in a travel backpack.

“The trunk is open,” Wang Dongfeng whispered, his two daughters asleep in the front.

“Mm, take care, Brother Gou,” Lin Xiwan nodded, put the backpack on her chest, and then, lifting her sister onto her back, kicked open the trunk door with her foot.

Lin Jiayao, clinging to her sister’s back, clutched the rifle tightly.

After getting out, Lin Xiwan carefully closed the trunk door.

Then, carrying her sister, she walked into the dark highway exit ramp.

Wang Dongfeng took out a pack of cigarettes, placed one in his mouth, but didn’t light it.

    His daughters were asleep.

He watched the two sisters disappear into the darkness and sighed deeply.

Seeing these two strong girls reminded him of his own daughters.

He only hoped that before he died, he could provide them with a safe environment… at least, within his control.

This was his unspoken motivation, the reason he kept striving.

After a moment of silence, Wang Dongfeng opened the car door, took out a few bottles of wine from the trunk, and, using the megaphone, assigned night watch duty and set a drinking limit.

Meanwhile, Lin Jiayao, on her sister’s back, looked at the familiar highway, slightly dazed.

She had been here before, controlling Mask.

She even recognized the bushes where Mask had crawled and the power lines the “Spider-Man” Awakened had used.

This was also where she had first encountered the Voodoo Cult. She even remembered where the other two unsalvaged backpacks were.

Scanning the roadside, her eyes lit up, and she tapped her sister’s neck.

“Sister, look, backpacks over there!” Lin Jiayao remembered taking only the leader’s backpack; she hadn’t thoroughly searched the others.

Perhaps there were other valuables inside.

“Backpacks?” Lin Xiwan looked in the direction her sister was pointing and saw three bodies lying there.

Two of them still had backpacks, open but seemingly full.

After confirming there were no zombies nearby, Lin Xiwan walked towards the bodies.

“Hold on tight,” she told her sister before reaching the bodies and carefully kneeling down.

She couldn’t squat with Lin Jiayao on her back.

Supporting Lin Jiayao’s bottom with her left hand, she searched the bodies with her right.

    Nothing… nothing… nothing…

Empty pockets, only damp masks in the backpacks, and even an expired condom.

The bodies were as clean as if they had already been looted.

Then, she saw the “V” shaped tattoos on their swollen faces.

“Voodoo Cult?!” Lin Xiwan exclaimed, then lowered her voice. “So they were killed by the Voodoo Cult…”

But why were the Voodoo Cult members also dead here?

“What’s wrong, Sister?” Lin Jiayao asked curiously.

“I figured it out!” Lin Xiwan smiled excitedly. “Yao, I know what happened!”

“Huh? What happened?” Lin Jiayao blinked, confused.

She even touched her sister’s forehead; it was cold from the rain, but she didn’t have a fever.

“I figured out what happened here,” Lin Xiwan said, ignoring the rain, a triumphant grin on her face. “The overturned truck, the massacred convoy, the dead Voodoo Cult members, it all makes sense now.”

“Huh?” Lin Jiayao was confused, momentarily worried that her actions as Mask had been discovered.

“The truck and the convoy encountered the Voodoo Cult on the road and were attacked. And then!” Lin Xiwan rubbed her hands excitedly. “Remember the person from Survivor’s Light who saved you?”

“They must have killed the Voodoo Cult members! That’s why they were so far from Donghai City! They were chasing the Voodoo Cult! It all connects!”

Lin Jiayao stared at her sister, speechless.

She… she actually figured it out?

    Impressive.

“I think so too,” Lin Jiayao said, nodding sagely.

Just as she was about to praise her sister’s cleverness, Lin Xiwan let out a surprised “Eh?”

“What is it?” Lin Jiayao asked.

“Car keys?!” Lin Xiwan pulled off a Voodoo Cult member’s belt; a set of car keys with a remote was attached.

“Their car might be parked in the town! Yao! We can look for it!”

Lin Xiwan’s voice was filled with excitement, and her enthusiasm was contagious.

Lin Jiayao had briefly looked for the Voodoo Cult’s vehicle when she’d passed through the town as Mask, but had quickly given up.

But with the remote, they might actually find it!

“Let’s find a house in the town to rest for the night first,” Lin Xiwan said, running towards the town. “You’ve been out in the rain for too long; your body can’t handle it.”

Only then did Lin Jiayao realize how exhausted she felt.

Perhaps because of her increased mental strength, she wasn’t sleepy or dizzy, but her body was reaching its limit.

Fortunately, the town wasn’t far. Lin Xiwan burst into a small villa with a courtyard.

    “Roar—”

A Biter by the door lunged at her, but Lin Xiwan was ready.

She swung the belt she’d taken from the Voodoo Cult member.

With precise control of her strength, the belt looped around the Biter’s neck.

She yanked it tight, then kicked the zombie’s head.

With a “crack,” the Biter’s neck snapped, and it collapsed at her feet.

Five years in the apocalypse had made her adept at dealing with ordinary zombies.

Lin Jiayao didn’t fire her rifle; the gunshot would attract more zombies.

Lin Xiwan closed the villa’s door, searched the house, and, finding no other zombies, carried her sister upstairs.

The first floor was flooded; they couldn’t stay there.

If the rain didn’t intensify, the water level shouldn’t rise further, and they should be able to drive any car they found.

Lin Xiwan carried her sister to the master bedroom on the second floor. The room was covered in dust, seemingly unoccupied for a long time.

She took off the travel backpack, opened it, placed the canned food and water on the dusty, bloodstained nightstand, spread the empty backpack on the bed, and carefully placed her sister on it.

“Wait here, I’ll see if there’s anything useful.”

After checking the wardrobe and under the bed for zombies, Lin Xiwan started searching the ensuite bathroom.

Luckily, she found a package of new towels.

She took one out, held it out the window to soak it in the rain, and then wrung it out.

Her gaze fell on the leather sofa in the living room.

The owners of this villa must have been wealthy. The sofa hadn’t rotted, just covered in dust.

She kicked it to scare away any cockroaches, dragged it out, and wiped off the dust with the wet towel.

Cleaning a leather sofa was easy. Soon, it was clean enough to use for the night.

Then, she took another towel, soaked it in the rain, wrung it out, and went to her sister.

Placing the rifle on the bed, she lifted Lin Jiayao and placed her on the clean sofa.

“You’re so cold… you’ve been in the rain too long,” Lin Xiwan said, helping her sister undress.

Her sister didn’t reply, her eyes drooping sleepily.

She first wiped the rain from Lin Jiayao’s body and then started drying her hair.

As she gently towel-dried her hair, she realized her sister had fallen asleep, leaning against her shoulder.

After wringing out her sister’s clothes, Lin Xiwan hung them up to dry. She then dried herself and her hair, hanging up her own wet clothes as well.

Satisfied, she took off her shoes, wrung out her socks, and climbed onto the sofa, holding her sister’s slightly cold body from behind, sharing her warmth.

“Goodnight, Yao,” she whispered, closing her eyes and falling asleep amidst the storm.

Chapter 66: Armed in the Rainy Night p1

    “Rat-tat-tat-tat——”
    “Pitter-patter——”
    “Roar——”
    “Boom——”

Gunfire, torrential rain, zombie growls, and the roar of grenades—the quiet highway had suddenly become a chaotic battlefield.

Lin Xiwan, carrying Lin Jiayao, ran towards the landslide, weaving between the lines of fire.

The young man who had warned them provided cover, his rifle taking down Sprinter after Sprinter.

He was clearly skilled with firearms, likely having spent a lot of time practicing.

Lin Jiayao, jostled on her sister’s shoulder, clutched the black cloak with her left hand and the rifle grip with her right.

    “Fall back! Fall back!”

“Damn it, we can’t hold them! Retreat! Retreat! Xiao Liu, flare!”

    “Those without guns, retreat first!”

Seven or eight armed men near the landslide, seeing Lin Xiwan approaching, made way for them.

Despite the chaos, they were disciplined, maintaining their formation even as the horde closed in.

    “Bang—Whoosh—”

A red flare arced through the air, its aluminum and magnesium powder burning brightly.

    “Grenades! Throw grenades! Retreat!”

After eliminating the fastest Sprinters, the eight ordinary people from the military base camp pulled out their grenades, primed them, and threw them.

    “Boom—”

Without time to assess the damage, they quickly retreated, scrambling up the muddy slope.

The rain-soaked earth was incredibly slippery, making the climb even more treacherous.

Every broken branch and loose stone was a potential hazard. They had to keep moving, pushing upwards through the mud, like running through a swamp.

Their progress was slow, and Lin Xiwan, carrying Lin Jiayao, was even slower.

Not only was she carrying another person, but she only had one free hand.

And that hand held a rifle.

Her strength and agility were useless on this treacherous slope.

She had no choice but to discard the rifle, use both hands, and crawl upwards.

Lin Jiayao, on her sister’s back, held her breath and observed the horde.

They shouldn’t be pursuing them; the jeep had distanced them considerably.

Unless… there was a Hive Zombie directing them.

The only Hive Zombies in Yangzhou City were Wailers.

Wailers were slow; they couldn’t keep up with the horde. It must be riding on another zombie…

Ignoring her sister’s heavy breathing, Lin Jiayao scanned the horde.

The fastest zombies had reached the base of the slope and were starting to climb.

The four abandoned jeeps were overrun and overturned, Biters being pushed over the guardrails and tumbling into the raging river below.

No… the horde is too dense, and the rain… I can’t see clearly.

Looking down, Lin Jiayao felt a surge of panic.

The mindless Biters weren’t even trying to climb properly.

The slower ones were being trampled by those behind them, pushed into the mud.

The horde, using the bodies of their own as stepping stones, was ascending at an alarming rate.

Fortunately, Lin Xiwan reached the top first. She shifted Lin Jiayao into a princess carry.

Carrying or piggybacking her would risk injuring her legs; this was the safest way.

Holding her sister tightly, she said, “Hold on tight.”

Feeling her sister’s arms around her neck, Lin Xiwan took a deep breath, her gaze fixed on the illuminated convoy below.

Spotting a large boulder on the downslope, she jumped, landing steadily on it, and then leaped again, carrying her sister, back onto solid ground.

“It’s you? You were here this morning picking up a car? What’s happening back there?” As soon as she landed, several men in raincoats surrounded her, the bearded man in the lead asking urgently.

    He seemed very worried.

“A horde on the highway. We abandoned the jeep and ran,” Lin Xiwan replied, catching her breath.

“A horde?” The man was clearly surprised. He took a few deep breaths, stepped back, and raised a megaphone.

“Stop digging! Stop digging! Get in the cars! Everyone get in the cars! And bring your guns! Now!”

He ran through the convoy, urging everyone to get in their vehicles.

More survivors were reaching the top of the slope, trying to descend.

One was lucky, managing to run down without incident.

But the others weren’t so fortunate. They tumbled down the slippery slope, their bodies battered by the rocks and branches.

Under the man’s direction, more than ten jeeps started up, everyone quickly loading the injured and returning to their vehicles.

    “Roar—”

A Sprinter, having climbed over the bodies of other zombies, reached the top of the slope and roared.

Lin Xiwan, holding Lin Jiayao tightly, looked up at the growing number of zombies.

A wave of helplessness washed over her.

The jeep was gone… supplies, guns, fuel, clothes… everything was gone.

The jeeps around her started driving away. Lin Xiwan, drenched and disheveled, felt incredibly vulnerable on the wide, empty highway.

“You two! Hurry! Get in the car! What are you waiting for?! Come here!!!”

The man with the megaphone shouted from beside the lead jeep.

Without hesitation, Lin Xiwan ran towards the jeep and climbed into the open trunk.

There was no heating in the car, but just being inside made her feel safe.

    “Thump—”

The trunk door slammed shut. The man put away the megaphone, ran to the driver’s seat, and started the jeep in one smooth motion.

Lin Xiwan noticed she was sitting on several military supply crates, and in front of her, a pair of twin girls peeked out from behind the front seats, looking at her curiously.

Carefully positioning her sister against the back of the front seat, Lin Xiwan leaned close to her ear and whispered, “Are you hurt anywhere?”

    “I’m fine, Sis.”

Hearing her sister’s reply, Lin Xiwan relaxed, slumped against the back of the trunk, and looked at the rearview mirror.

She saw zombies tumbling down the slope. Only four of the eight men who had been providing cover remained, three of them injured.

She didn’t see the other four… they had likely been overtaken by the horde.

The young man who had been staring at her sister, the one who had helped cover their escape, probably hadn’t made it – he had been at the very back.

“Daddy, where’s Big Brother’s car?” one of the little girls asked the bearded man in a childish voice.

“Big Brother went ahead,” the bearded man said, his voice slightly somber.

“Oh.” The little girl nodded obediently.

Lin Xiwan didn’t know what to say. After a moment of silence, she whispered, “Thank you, Brother Gou.”

Wang Dongfeng, nicknamed Brother Gou, was the leader of the military base camp. He was an ordinary person – Lin Xiwan had only learned this a few days ago when she bought the jeep.

He had been a civil servant before the apocalypse. The military base camp had always been secretive; she didn’t know how he’d become their leader.

She only knew he had been the first to lead survivors to the military base’s underground storage facility and had actively recruited people in the early days of the apocalypse, even families.

Unfortunately, before Lin Xiwan could gather enough resources to take her sister to the military base camp, they had announced on the radio that they could no longer accept survivors.

The car wasn’t silent. The walkie-talkie in Wang Dongfeng’s hand emitted static.

But despite the constant “zzz,” he kept it on, seemingly waiting for something.

Finally, a clear voice came through.

    “Brother Gou… zzz… they’re… just external injuries…”

    “Four… didn’t make it… zzz… Zhang… zzz… Along…”

Lin Xiwan noticed that Wang Dongfeng’s knuckles were white on the steering wheel.

“What? Say that again? Which four are missing?” The heavy rain interfered with the walkie-talkie’s range. He accelerated slightly and asked again.

This time, he clearly heard the names of the four missing and exhaled slowly.

“Keep driving… We’ll stop before reaching Yutian Town.”

None of the names were Wang; his son had survived. He was likely among those who had tumbled down the slope.

“Team Leader Lin, is this your sister?” Relieved about his son, Wang Dongfeng became more talkative. “You’re taking this highway? Going to Xin City? Or Yumu City?”

Yangzhou City was at a major intersection, with highways leading to all surrounding provinces and cities. He didn’t know Lin Xiwan’s destination.

    “Donghai City,” Lin Xiwan replied.

“Donghai… Survivor’s Light?” Wang Dongfeng seemed surprised. “Didn’t they stop broadcasting?”

Survivor’s Light’s daily radio broadcasts, sharing information about zombies and their weaknesses, had become a staple for every survivor. So, he was well aware of their sudden silence.

Everyone was speculating about what had happened to them.

“Yes,” Lin Xiwan replied, and the conversation died down.

“Sister,” one of the twin girls with pigtails, sitting in the back, suddenly said, holding out a slightly melted rock candy to Lin Jiayao. “Candy.”

Candy was a valuable commodity in the apocalypse. A child having it as a snack meant the rumors about the abundance of supplies in the military storage facility were likely true.

“Thank you.” Lin Jiayao smiled, took the candy, and gave it to her sister.

    “Mmm—”

Lin Xiwan instinctively tried to refuse, but seeing it was Lin Jiayao, she accepted.

Her sister had exerted herself; replenishing her sugar levels was important.

“We’re planning to detour to Fuzhou City… They have the largest canned food processing plant in the province. Team Leader Lin, interested in joining us?”

Wang Dongfeng took advantage of the slightly relaxed atmosphere to extend his invitation.

“There must be other people there already,” Lin Xiwan said, shaking her head.

Besides, Fuzhou City was in the opposite direction of Donghai Province. They couldn’t detour with him.

“We have the largest military base in the province. We can negotiate with them,” Wang Dongfeng said, his meaning clear.

They intended to take the canning factory and warehouse, by force if necessary.

It was a matter of survival; Lin Xiwan couldn’t judge.

She remained silent, rubbing her temples, and glanced at her sister, biting her lip.

Lin Jiayao could sense her sister’s hesitation and guessed why.

Traveling with a convoy would be safer.

“We’re not going in the same direction,” Lin Jiayao said, declining the offer for her sister.

“Not the same direction… I see,” Wang Dongfeng nodded, not pressing further. “I can only take you to the town up ahead then. Take care.”

Dropping them off at the town was already more than he had to do. With any luck, they might find a working car there.

Lin Jiayao knew her sister well, especially after tonight’s events.

Her sister would rather face endless hordes of zombies than point a gun at ordinary people.

Lin Xiwan was clearly relieved by her sister’s response, but she took her hand and squeezed it tightly.

Lin Jiayao knew her sister was worried, both about her and about their future.

    “Screech—”

A sudden stop interrupted them. Both sisters looked at Wang Dongfeng.

He was frowning, holding the walkie-talkie.

“Hello? What’s happening up ahead? Please respond.”

The convoy had stopped for some reason.

    “Knock, knock, knock—”

Someone knocked on Wang Dongfeng’s window. “Brother Gou, there’s an accident up ahead, a lot of bodies… and an overturned truck, looks like it exploded, but there’s still some unsalvaged loot. We’re going to move the truck.”

    Wang Dongfeng frowned.

He glanced back at Lin Xiwan. “You guys go ahead.”

After the man left, Wang Dongfeng stroked his daughters’ heads. “Be good, play with the two sisters for a while, okay?”

    “Okay!”

    “Yes, Daddy.”

The two girls nodded obediently. Then, Wang Dongfeng turned to Lin Xiwan. “Team Leader Lin, please keep an eye on them.”

He pulled up his hood, grabbed the megaphone, and went to direct the operation.

“Yaoyao, wait for me, I’ll go help too.” Lin Xiwan moved to the driver’s seat.

“Sister,” Lin Jiayao grabbed her arm and handed her the cloak. “Take this.”

“Okay.” Lin Xiwan smiled at her sister, took the cloak, put it on, and jumped out of the car, running towards the overturned truck.

They hadn’t spoken, but Lin Jiayao understood what her sister intended to do.

They had no car, no supplies. And up ahead was a potential source of both.

Even if it had been burned, there might still be something usable, like unscorched canned food or guns.

Lin Jiayao knew there might be canned food, but definitely no guns.

Because Mask had already taken all the working ones.

Lin Xiwan, braving the rain, reached the scene.

Wang Dongfeng was directing a group of men, trying to move the overturned truck.

A few women and thinner men were clearing debris that could puncture tires.

Wang Dongfeng, seeing Lin Xiwan, guessed her intentions and sighed inwardly.

“Team Leader Lin, please help clear the debris around the truck. Thank you.” He pointed towards the truck and then returned to his task.

Lin Xiwan didn’t reply but pulled down her hood and walked towards the truck.

She didn’t know if Wang Dongfeng was still trying to recruit her, but he was, at least, being kind.

Reaching the overturned truck, she saw that the supplies inside were charred beyond recognition.

And beside the truck were several rotting corpses, all headless.

Even those with heads had been shot in the forehead.

Lin Xiwan frowned, looking at the pale, decaying bodies.

Another massacre by some psychopath… a highway gang? The decapitations and the control shots suggested a gang or the Voodoo Cult.

Especially the fact that they hadn’t taken any supplies and had set the truck on fire; that was typical Voodoo Cult behavior.

Had those lunatics infiltrated this area too?

Chapter 65: Crisis on a Rainy Night p2

Driving this fast in such heavy rain was too risky.

“Yaoyao, are you alright?” Lin Xiwan asked, reaching back with her right hand while steering with her left.

Lin Jiayao leaned against the seat and took her sister’s hand. “I’m fine.”

She ejected the almost empty magazine, placed the rifle and two new magazines on the seat, and then, using her sister’s hand for support, climbed back into her seat.

Lin Xiwan lifted her sister’s legs and placed them back on the floorboard, then rested her hand on the reclined passenger seat.

Lin Jiayao placed the rifle on her lap and pressed the button to raise the seat back. Lin Xiwan helped her adjust it.

    “Hoo…”

Lin Xiwan finally relaxed, her hand still resting on her sister’s head, trembling slightly.

Just when she thought they wouldn’t make it, her sister had stepped up, emptying a magazine into the zombies trying to climb onto the jeep.

    They were incredibly lucky.

Especially with the Sprinter on the roof. In her panic, she hadn’t even noticed how it had fallen.

She had only seen the bullet holes in the roof through the rearview mirror. It seemed her sister had fired a few random shots, injuring the Sprinter and causing it to fall.

Lin Xiwan couldn’t have guessed that her sister had killed the Sprinter with a single shot through the roof.

If the Sprinter had been sentient and capable of speech, its last words would have been, “Ribbit!!!!”

“Good job, Yao.” Lin Xiwan praised her sister, still stroking her head.

The relief and excitement made her want to hug and kiss her sister, but the danger hadn’t passed yet. She could only ruffle her hair.

Lin Jiayao let her sister continue while reloading her rifle.

When she was done, her sister was still petting her head. “Sis… my head’s on fire,” she finally complained, drawing out the words.

“Oh, oh, right.” Lin Xiwan’s hand moved from her head to her face, gently caressing it.

    “Sigh…”

Lin Jiayao gave up on stopping her.

Only when they saw the highway toll station did they both relax.

    Safe, for now.

To escape her sister’s affectionate touch, Lin Jiayao used the excuse of needing to reload, crawled into the back, grabbed a box of ammunition and an empty magazine, and started loading.

    “Click—Click—Click—”

The highway was in much better condition than the city roads, and there were almost no zombies.

The only sounds were the rain, the water dripping through the bullet holes in the roof, and the clicking of Lin Jiayao loading bullets.

Suddenly, she felt the jeep slowing down.

Just as she was about to look up and see what was happening, her sister patted her shoulder.

    “Give me the gun.”

    “Okay.”

Lin Jiayao inserted a full magazine into the rifle, held the rifle against her stomach with the stock, chambered a round, and then handed it to her sister.

Only then did she notice the situation ahead.

Even in the low visibility, she could see a few faint red lights ahead, seemingly taillights.

Someone stopped in front of them?

Like Lin Xiwan, Lin Jiayao felt a chill run down her spine, her breath catching in her throat.

Compared to the horde earlier, encountering humans was more worrisome.

To Lin Jiayao, armed humans were far more dangerous than mindless zombies.

Lin Xiwan slowed the jeep as they approached the red lights.

“Wait here. If I’m not back in a minute…” Lin Xiwan was about to tell her sister to stay in the car while she investigated when she saw her sister’s lips purse slightly.

She had promised not to leave her alone in dangerous situations again.

Her sister trusted her; she should also trust her sister.

After all, her sister had just defended them admirably during the zombie attack.

Lin Xiwan took a deep breath and handed the rifle back to Lin Jiayao. “Hold it steady, just like you did earlier.”

Taking the rifle, Lin Xiwan picked up the other one wrapped in oilcloth from the back.

    “Rip—”
    “Click—”

She tore open the oilcloth, took out the rifle, disengaged the safety, and chambered a round. Holding the rifle in her right hand, she steered with her left and slowly accelerated.

The heavy rain interfered with Bone Spike Lurker; Lin Jiayao couldn’t hear the conversation in the other vehicles, only the distinct clicks of firearms being chambered.

    “Vroom—”

When they were about twenty-five meters away from the taillights, Lin Xiwan suddenly accelerated.

The tires spun, splashing water, and the jeep lunged forward.

She intended to drive straight through the stopped vehicles – stopping was too risky.

When they were about ten meters away, she shouted, “Hold on!” tapped the brakes twice, and then slammed on them.

    “Screech—”

The tires skidded on the wet road, unable to stop completely, and the jeep rear-ended one of the vehicles.

    “Crash—”

A loud impact, and the taillight shattered.

Lin Xiwan hadn’t intended to crash, but she’d seen the road ahead the moment the wipers cleared the windshield.

A landslide from the hill beside the highway had blocked the road with mud and debris.

The three black jeeps ahead were also stopped by the landslide.

After the collision, Lin Xiwan raised her rifle and aimed it at the vehicle in front, her heart pounding.

If they made any sudden moves, she would fire.

And Lin Jiayao, after regaining her balance, also raised her rifle, aiming at another vehicle.

The rain was too heavy; they couldn’t see what was happening inside the other vehicles, even at such close range.

The three jeeps ahead turned off their headlights. Lin Xiwan quickly did the same, and the highway was plunged into darkness.

It was already difficult to see what was happening; now, without headlights, it was impossible.

There was no moon in the rainy night, no streetlights on the highway. The four vehicles stood in silent confrontation, no one daring to step out.

The standoff lasted for about three minutes. Just as Lin Jiayao’s hand, holding the rifle, began to cramp, the situation changed.

    “Honk—Honk—”

The jeep in front of Lin Xiwan suddenly honked its horn.

    A signal?

Both girls tensed, thinking it was a signal to the other two vehicles.

The tense standoff continued for another minute. Nothing happened.

    Not a signal?

Then, the jeep honked again, this time with a distinct rhythm.

    “Honk—Honk—Honk-Honk-Honk—”

Lin Xiwan still didn’t move, her rifle aimed. Then, she saw a pale hand reach over from the passenger side and press the horn.

    “Yaoyao?”

    “Beep—Beep—Beep-Beep-Beep—”

Before Lin Xiwan could ask, Lin Jiayao responded with the same rhythmic honking.

    Mirroring the jeep in front.

Soon, the other three vehicles honked their horns in the same pattern, and Lin Jiayao responded again.

    “Honk—Honk—Honk-Honk-Honk—”
    “Beep—Beep—Beep-Beep-Beep—”

Even Lin Xiwan, who had never played computer games, understood. Her sister had responded to a secret code.

The quiet highway was now filled with the cacophony of car horns.

The other vehicles turned their headlights back on, and the jeep in front even opened its door.

Lin Xiwan also turned on her headlights, illuminating the black jeep ahead.

In the headlights’ beam, she saw a young man in a raincoat and a hat, his hands raised, walking towards them.

Lin Xiwan slowly lowered her rifle.

But Lin Jiayao kept hers raised, aimed at the other two vehicles.

As the man reached the driver’s side window, Lin Xiwan slowly rolled it down.

The man, seeing the woman clearly, and then the pale-faced girl in the passenger seat, froze momentarily, forgetting his purpose.

    “Knock, knock—”

Lin Xiwan, irritated by the man’s staring, rapped on the door, snapping him out of it.

    “Uh… hello, my name is…”

“I don’t care what your name is,” Lin Xiwan interrupted, her tone unfriendly.

The man sensed the tension. Taking a deep breath, he said quickly, “We’re from the military base camp. The underground storage facility was flooded, so we took some supplies, loaded up all the vehicles, and left with the entire camp… You bought your jeep from the camp too, right? Same model and modifications.”

“Yes,” Lin Xiwan nodded curtly, motioning for him to continue.

“There’s a landslide up ahead. We’re separated from the rest of our convoy. They’re clearing the debris on the far right lane; that’s where the blockage is smallest. We’re about to start clearing this side…”

“Our leader said you can wait behind us. After we clear the path, you can proceed. Would that be alright with you?”

It seemed the young man had already spoken to his leader. They clearly wanted to avoid conflict.

Many people had bought modified vehicles in the past few days before the storm, most of them Awakened; there was no need to antagonize them.

    “Okay, we’ll wait.”

    Lin Xiwan agreed.

The man couldn’t resist one last glance at Lin Jiayao, who had lowered her rifle, his Adam’s apple bobbing, before nodding and leaving.

As soon as he turned away, Lin Xiwan rolled up the window, shutting out the rain and thunder.

    “Heh, pervert,” she muttered.

“Hmm? Wasn’t he quite polite?” Lin Jiayao asked, a little confused.

She had been watching the other two vehicles, not paying attention to the young man.

“He kept staring at you,” Lin Xiwan cupped her sister’s face and made a mock-drooling sound. “Like this! He was practically drooling!”

Lin Jiayao chuckled at her sister’s exaggerated imitation. “So that’s what a pervert is? Then Sister often stares at me, so doesn’t that mean…”

“I’m your older sister! What’s wrong with staring? Hmph! I’ll stare all I want!” Lin Xiwan feigned anger and then, leaning forward, pressed her forehead against Lin Jiayao’s and rubbed it affectionately.

“What are you doing—?” Lin Jiayao laughed, pushing her sister away, her mood lightening.

Now they just had to wait for the other vehicles to clear the road.

Lin Jiayao felt confident they would reach Xin City safely via the highway. She just had to keep an eye out for any buildings covered in scrap metal.

If an Armored zombie fell on their car, they would be crushed.

Seven or eight people from the three jeeps ahead were already digging a path through the debris in the far right lane.

While waiting, Lin Xiwan turned off the headlights, climbed into the back, took off her wet clothes, and changed into dry ones.

The darkness and the heavy rain provided excellent cover; even someone standing a meter away couldn’t see clearly inside the jeep.

They could do anything without being seen.

After changing, Lin Xiwan helped Lin Jiayao change as well.

Then, she carried her sister back to the passenger seat and went back to the trunk to repair the roof.

Using her bare hands, she pushed the dented metal back into shape with brute strength.

After fixing both dents, the rainwater no longer poured through the bullet holes.

Then, she found a roll of blue electrical tape and sealed the holes.

There wasn’t much water inside the jeep; the rear doors were welded shut, but there was a small gap at the bottom for drainage, seemingly designed with the heavy southern rains in mind.

Lin Jiayao watched her sister work, her chin resting on the seat back, lost in thought.

I really want to use those cool guns… but I can’t explain how I got them…

Perhaps she could pretend to find them while scavenging with her sister?

Uh… no, that was too ridiculous.

As ridiculous as finding SpongeBob SquarePants on the other side of the ocean.

And the guns were too long to fit in the safehouse.

If the 2×2 safehouse could be upgraded to 3×3, she could disassemble the guns and bring in the parts.

While watching her sister, Lin Jiayao kept her right hand on the center console, Bone Spike Lurker constantly activated.

Although the heavy rain interfered with her hearing, she could still detect sounds other than the rain.

Like footsteps, or the clicking of firearms being chambered.

“Sigh, I hope we can find a place without rain, preferably sunny, so we can dry our clothes…”

Lin Jiayao smiled, listening to her sister’s muttering, but then her smile froze.

Her Bone Spike Lurker detected numerous footsteps.

    Coming from behind.

On this section of the highway, the right side was a cliff and a raging river, the left a small hill.

    So many footsteps…

“Sis… Sister!” Lin Jiayao quickly interrupted her sister, handing her the rifle.

150 meters, close enough to see blurry figures through the rain, and if they were outside, they could even hear the growls of zombies.

“Behind us!” Lin Jiayao pointed. A dark mass of zombies was approaching.

Lin Xiwan turned. The fastest Sprinters were only about fifty meters away; she could even see the red glow in their eyes.

    “Rat-tat-tat-tat—”

    “Rat-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat—”

Intense gunfire erupted from the other three vehicles. They had also seen the zombies.

A figure, firing a rifle, pounded on a car door.

    “Go! Go! Go!!!”

A young man’s voice shouted from outside.

They had to abandon their vehicles and climb over the landslide to rejoin the main convoy.

    “Sister—”

Before Lin Jiayao could speak, Lin Xiwan grabbed her.

    “Hold onto the gun!”

With her last words, she kicked open the door, grabbed her rifle with her left hand, held Lin Jiayao with her right, and jumped out of the jeep, running towards the landslide like a flash of lightning.
