Chapter 87: There’s Fun to Be Had!

How… how do I kill myself?

Lin Jiayao, logged into An Xiaoxi, pondered for a while.

After dismissing options like bullets, explosions, and fire, she finally settled on a relatively painless method.

    Just don’t extract.

She glanced at the extraction timer: one hour, standard. She was slightly relieved.

The extraction times and distances for fungal zombies were always relatively short.

With an hour to spare, Lin Jiayao decided to see if she could buy anything useful in Survivor’s Light.

Before logging in, she had put a blood crystal in the safehouse.

She didn’t bring more because it would limit her carrying capacity.

With only four slots in the safehouse, carrying three blood crystals meant only one slot left for other items.

And she doubted four slots would be enough to carry everything she could buy with three blood crystals.

After all, even automatic rifles were sold by weight at the Hengyang Stadium camp.

So, ignoring the extraction point just a kilometer away, she headed towards the “market” in An Xiaoxi’s memory.

She wanted to see if she could find any decent weapons to “modify” at the Workbench in her Hideout.

Due to the limited safehouse space, she could only buy smaller items like knives or pistols.

Perfect for testing the “modification” function.

Survivor’s Light’s market was located in a twenty-story office building called “Xinhe.”

Without a functioning ventilation system, all the windows on the first five floors had been removed, making the building look like it was under construction.

But now, the market seemed less lively than in her memories.

It used to sell everything: weapons, homemade tools, furniture, anything and everything. It was a dedicated marketplace.

Entering the building, Lin Jiayao quickly bypassed the stalls on the first floor and headed for the second.

The first floor mostly sold bulky furniture and household items; the second floor was where she would find what she needed.

Reaching the second floor, she saw a wide array of firearms and weapons.

Many were sold by ordinary people on behalf of Awakened explorers, so there were weapons and equipment from various sources.

She bypassed the rifles and vests, focusing on the few pistols available.

After all, rifles, firing full-power cartridges, were better for dealing with zombies. Even submachine guns were rarely used, let alone pistols.

Take Mask, for example. Lin Jiayao’s FN-57, even a full magazine, couldn’t guarantee a kill against an Armored zombie, unless all the bullets hit the same spot within a meter.

So, she was just browsing, not expecting to find anything particularly useful.

She couldn’t possibly find a Desert Eagle in China…

Holy shit, there actually was one!

A gleaming black pistol caught her eye.

Noticing her gaze, the stall owner picked it up and began his sales pitch.

“A Desert Eagle! What do you think? A certain exploration team found it in a safe in a mansion…”

“…Not much ammo, though, only one magazine, eleven .50 AE rounds. Mostly for collection. Xiao An, if you’re interested, 3g… no, 2g will do.”

Recognizing An Xiaoxi, the stall owner seemed eager to make a sale.

After all, many people listened to An Xiaoxi’s calming voice on the radio every night; she was the camp’s sweetheart.

“Uh… I’ll look around a bit more,” Lin Jiayao smiled and declined, despite the discounted price.

Although the gun looked impressive, it was useless to her.

This was for her main body. Without the support of bone spikes, the recoil would probably send the gun flying before the zombie even fell.

Excessive recoil, poor accuracy, complex mechanism, low reliability – any one of these would be enough to dissuade her.

Instead of searching blindly, it would be better to utilize this body’s… popularity.

“Boss, do you know where I can find a smaller, more… manageable pistol?” she asked with a smile. “Or a combat knife, perhaps?”

“Uh… what do you need those for…?” the stall owner muttered, then, seemingly remembering something, took out a black knife handle with chipped paint.

“If you want it, I can give you this switchblade. I used it to open cans. If you don’t mind…”

He pressed a button on the handle, and the blade sprang out, gleaming, seemingly well-maintained, not just a can opener.

Lin Jiayao accepted the gift without hesitation, played with the knife for a bit, pressed the blade back into the handle, and the lock engaged with a click.

    “Thanks.”

She smiled at the stall owner, put the knife in her pocket, and asked, “Do you know any other stalls selling pistols?”

“No,” he shook his head. “Apparently, there’s a rule now; exploration teams aren’t allowed to bring back pistols for sale. Rifles are fine, though.”

“Oh… thanks.” Although An Xiaoxi was an Awakened, she hadn’t been part of an exploration team and didn’t know about this rule.

It made sense. In such a large camp, conflicts were inevitable.

Carrying a rifle was one thing; it was visible, a deterrent.

But someone suddenly pulling out a pistol… that was a different matter. This rule was likely a safety precaution.

The Desert Eagle was probably classified as a hunting weapon, hence being allowed.

Knowing she probably wouldn’t find anything suitable, and with forty minutes left until extraction, Lin Jiayao decided to just browse.

This body, An Xiaoxi, had already been completely consumed by the fungus before she logged in. She wasn’t planning on keeping it.

After browsing for about thirty minutes, finding nothing of interest, she reached the seventeenth floor, broke a window with the switchblade, put the knife back in the safehouse, and waited for the extraction.

At the last second, she jumped, the wind whistling past her ears as her consciousness returned to darkness.

    「Extraction Failed」

The stark message appeared on the screen. And An Xiaoxi’s slot was now on a 12-hour cooldown.

Lin Jiayao wasn’t too concerned. Compared to the fate of Survivor’s Light, she was more worried about whether they could go to Kun City in Yun Province.

That was the more pressing question, the one that would determine their future.

Exiting the consciousness space, just as she was about to put the switchblade from the safehouse into the warehouse, she saw a red “①” on the login screen.

    ①?

Didn’t that only appear when the fourth zombie, the Hunter, extracted successfully?

    What did it mean?

Curious, she clicked on the login interface, putting aside the thought of experimenting with the Workbench.

「[No.4] is under system autopilot and about to be attacked. Do you wish to log in?」

The fourth zombie was under attack?

Wasn’t the extraction point supposed to be safe?

「Extraction points are only relatively safe, not absolutely safe」

“Oh…” Lin Jiayao mentally acknowledged the system’s explanation, then couldn’t help but mutter, “You’re so useless… System…”

The system didn’t respond, simply repeating its question after a moment.

「Do you wish to log in to [No.4] and manually avoid the danger?」

    “No.”

    Lin Jiayao declined.

If it was under attack, there was nothing she could do.

She couldn’t control the fourth zombie properly; it would just run around randomly. She couldn’t even make it go to the extraction point.

The system’s autopilot, at least, would guide it towards extraction.

If the fourth zombie died, so be it. She still had Goldie, the lucky number three, and her old buddy, Mask, more than enough for collecting blood crystals and supplies.

Maybe the next randomly assigned zombie would be even better.

Quickly dismissing the thought, Lin Jiayao opened the Hideout interface, ready to experiment with modifications. Unbeknownst to her, after she declined the login, the fourth zombie automatically activated.

    “Whoosh—”
    “Boom!”

An RPG hit the skyscraper, shattering the windows nearby.

Zombies roared from within the building, several Biters running out into the sunlight, charging towards the humans.

“Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang…”

As soon as they emerged, they were met with a hail of bullets and a barrage of curses.

“What the fuck is this shithole? Nothing but weaklings! Damn it!”

A woman with a green mohawk, chewing on something, her rifle resting on her shoulder, complained loudly.

Their sweep team had just arrived at the outskirts of Fuzhou City.

After refueling all the vehicles, the tanker remained outside, a small detachment securing the area and setting up a temporary camp, while the others, armed and equipped, entered the city.

A city was large; even with the blaring music attracting hordes, clearing it would take time.

And the Boss had ordered them to leave no survivors.

Seeing the scattered Biters, the green-haired woman sighed again.

This sweep was going to be boring. She hoped they’d encounter a camp; then things would get interesting.

    “Rat-tat-tat-tat—”

“Two vehicles per team, spread out, accelerate! Use flares for communication! Regroup at nightfall.” After firing a burst into the air to get everyone’s attention, the mohawked woman issued her commands.

Splitting up was risky, of course.

    But fast.

And if you died, fire a flare first; they would be grateful for the entertainment.

Following her orders, the convoy dispersed, two vehicles per team, speeding down different streets, car stereos blasting various tunes, like a bizarre street dance competition.

After the others left, only two vehicles remained: the mohawked woman and the bespectacled Wei.

“Hey! Four-eyes! Aren’t you going to warm up?” The woman shouted at the vehicle in front, leaning out the window.

But the four-eyed man didn’t respond.

    “Tsk…”

Looking at the Biters, drawn by the music, she jumped out of the car.

    “Rat-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat—”

After emptying her magazine, she discarded the rifle, took a small test tube from a special pouch on her waist – it contained a bone fragment and a small blood crystal – and uncapped it.

“What the fuck… what kind of bone is this again? I forgot to label it… whatever, lucky dip.”

She poured the contents into her mouth.

    “Aagh—”

Her veins bulged, and she clutched her head, howling in pain.

Her fingers and toes sprouted sharp bone spikes, her back splitting open, revealing a fleshy, wing-like bone structure.

    “Damn it… so it’s a bird…”

She straightened up, stretched, and then, lunging forward, grabbed the heads of two approaching Biters.

With a sickening crunch, the skulls shattered. The feeling of the warm, viscous fluids on her hands excited her, a primal bloodlust rising.

    “Whoosh—”

    “Bang—”

A firecracker-like explosion in the air; one of the Voodoo Cult’s signals.

Both the woman and the bespectacled Wei turned towards the sound, one with excitement, the other with apprehension.

    “There’s fun to be had!”

    “There’s trouble…”

Chapter 86: Seeds of a Long Journey p2

She looked at the evolution options.

    「Please retain your evolution」
「1、【Blood Crystal Vision Lv.1 (Purple): When activated, only blood crystals and creatures containing blood crystals are visible, ignoring most obstacles】」
「2、【Blood Crystal Amalgam Lv.1 (Purple): Allows your body to be compatible with different blood crystal abilities, with a chance of incompatibility】」
「3、【Bone Spike Chainsaw Lv.1 (Blue): Transforms your hands into chainsaws, activated by blood crystals】」

The first was the ability that made everything but blood crystals disappear from view. She could even use it to identify weak points, areas with high blood crystal concentrations, in a creature’s body.

The second was a sort of “you are what you eat” ability. She had already experienced its side effect: severing her own muscles when activating the chainsaws.

And the third… the very reason her muscles had been severed. The only blue option of the three.

Lin Jiayao had no interest in gnawing on blood crystals or turning her hands into chainsaws. The first ability was what she wanted.

A search function that ignored visual obstacles was better than Bone Spike Lurker for detecting zombies.

A single glance, and she would know if there were any zombies or Awakened nearby.

If she’d had this ability in the field yesterday, her sister wouldn’t have been injured.

She would have seen the red glow of the Corpse Birds in the tall grass and warned her sister.

With this, she wouldn’t have to choose that disgusting insect ability.

And it could be toggled on and off. There was no reason not to choose it.

Selecting the first evolution, Lin Jiayao felt her eyes grow warm.

Her previous fungal vision had enhanced her sight, allowing her to see further.

Now, combined with this ability, she could probably see blood crystals within a radius of four or five hundred meters with her naked eyes.

A walking, human radar, detecting both terrain and zombies.

    She finally felt safer.

Since she was lying on her back, being held by her sister, she decided to test the ability now.

She slowly opened her eyes and activated Lv.1 [Blood Crystal Vision].

Black blood seeped into her eyes, only her pupils glowing red, scanning her surroundings.

Everything went dark, but a faint red glow nearby, the sign of an Awakened, was clearly visible.

Closing and then reopening her eyes, the darkness receded, and the world returned to its normal colors.

And in the location of that faint red glow lay a young woman, her back to her, holding her younger sister in her arms, fast asleep.

After so many days without a proper place to rest, now, finally safe, they were both exhausted.

They didn’t even care about sleeping on a hard bed.

Lin Jiayao also closed her eyes, but not to sleep, but to log into a zombie.

She would log into An Xiaoxi.

    And then kill herself.

After the 12-hour cooldown, she would log into a zombie in Kun City, Yun Province, and assess the situation there.

If it wasn’t safe, they would join this camp.

The leader seemed friendly, and everyone she’d encountered so far seemed relatively normal; the atmosphere wasn’t oppressive.

It might be a decent camp, and they were self-sufficient.

After her sister woke up, they would explore the camp together.

Thinking this, Lin Jiayao logged into An Xiaoxi.

    “Woo—”

“⚡Living like this for thirty years⚡”

    “⚡Boom—Boom—Boom—⚡”

    “⚡Until the building collapses⚡”

On the highway, a convoy of over twenty vehicles, including a fuel tanker, sped along, blasting music from a loudspeaker.

“Woohoo—” A woman with a green mohawk stood on the roof rack of the lead vehicle, its exhaust pipes spitting flames, cheering.

She wore a black leather catsuit with spiked wristbands and a belt, a skull tattooed on her face, obscuring her features.

From the scattered syringes at her feet, she was clearly high.

“Damn it, you’re not partying with us, you’re writing some bullshit! I didn’t bring you here to write fucking essays!”

The frenzied woman suddenly jumped down from the roof rack and kicked the bespectacled man’s notebook off his lap in the passenger seat.

The man glanced at the dirty footprint on his notebook, wiped it on the driver’s shirt, picked up the notebook, and then continued writing.

“You didn’t bring me, the Boss did. She doesn’t trust you to keep things under control,” he said, adjusting his glasses with his middle finger and flipping through his notebook. “To be safe, I highly recommend you keep this party going for a few more days, until the reinforcements the Boss mentioned arrive.”

“Party my ass, we’re going to Fuzhou City tonight!” The mohawked woman slapped the driver’s head. “Faster! Faster, damn it, faster!”

The man continued to flip through his notebook, his expression unchanged, checking for anything he might have missed.

The woman, bored, leaned over and glanced at the page he was on, reading aloud.

“Zombie or prisoner body fat mixed with N… what the fuck… and alcohol, boiled, then cooled… what the hell is this shit?”

The long list of ingredients gave her a headache. She looked at the title.

Methods for Making Soap from Human Fat and Human Fat Bombs.

    She stared at it, silent.

After a long moment, she turned to the bespectacled man and yelled, “You motherfucker! I’ve been washing my face with zombie fat soap for three years?! And human fat?!”

“Fat is fat.” He pushed up his glasses, calmly turning to a blank page. “It makes our lives easier.”

“Ugh—” Even in her drug-induced state, she couldn’t help but gag, then glared at him in disgust.

“How can you be so fucking disgusting?! This is… truly revolting.”

She climbed back onto the roof and then jumped onto the next vehicle, tumbling into the back.

“Ungrateful bitch…” he muttered, continuing to write in his notebook. “Without me, you’d all still be covered in filth, eating dirt… Idiots.”

He paused, the man with the white mask and glasses, and looked at the driver, whose forehead was covered in sweat.

“You’re not as stupid as her, are you, Song… Song… what was it again?”

“Song… Song Qian, Brother Wei…” the driver stammered, his foot on the accelerator, swallowing hard. “Brother Wei… your experiments… they’re incredibly useful! They’ve solved so many of our problems! You must have been an MIT student before the apocalypse.”

Song Qian’s flattery finally made the bespectacled man, known as Wei, smile behind his mask.

“Haha, you flatter me. I didn’t even get into college before the apocalypse.” He closed the notebook and patted Song Qian’s shoulder. “You’ve got a bright future ahead of you, young man. Driving is beneath you, how about becoming my lab…”

Before he could finish, Song Qian, his heart in his throat, interrupted. “Not at all! Not at all! Driving is all I’ve ever done. I love driving, it’s my life.”

Hearing this, Wei’s smile widened. “You love driving, huh?”

Song Qian’s heart sank. He’d said the wrong thing.

Contrariness was the Voodoo Cult’s specialty.

Wei had used this tactic to accelerate the woman’s attack earlier and had now tricked Song Qian into revealing his true desire.

“Don’t worry, you’re not going to be a test subject, just an assistant.” Wei’s casual words reassured Song Qian, whose heart had nearly stopped.

“Thank you, Brother Wei… Thank you, Brother Wei…”

Just then, the car radio crackled to life.

Their modified radio had picked up a signal.

“Zzz… This is the Qingzhou University Camp… zzz…”

    “Location… Tianzhou District, Qingzhou Avenue… Password…”

Hearing this, Song Qian stopped trembling, a strange smile spreading across his face.

“Brother Wei… a camp…” he whispered, nudging the man beside him.

What did a camp mean to the Voodoo Cult?

    Slaughter! Screams! Women! Parties!

Fun! Fun! Fun! Fun! Fun! Fun!

Any kind of fun you could imagine! Nothing was off limits!

But Wei, his gaze still fixed on his notebook, said calmly, “We’ll go after we complete the mission. The Boss’s orders are more important.”

    “Yes, Brother Wei! Fuzhou first!”

    “Roar—”

    “Whirr—”

Song Qian, unable to contain his excitement, slammed on the gas, the SUV accelerating to a terrifying speed, the entire convoy speeding up with it.

    “Screech, screech—”

Changzhou City. A van sped down a city road, the screeching of metal against asphalt echoing.

But its tires weren’t moving; the handbrake hadn’t even been released.

    Something was pulling the van.

    “Screech, screech—”

    “Roar—”

Four zombies, their bodies bound to the front of the van with countless tendrils, their limbs churning as they ran, pulled the vehicle forward.

They had been running for who knew how long, their bodies steaming, their muscles, seemingly protected by a layer of fungal mat, unblemished by the sun.

Their heads were split open, blood-red, crystal-like mushrooms sprouting from their brains, swaying with each stride.

And inside the van, a small figure sat in the driver’s seat in a strange posture.

Reclined almost horizontally, its slender legs, clad in pristine white stockings, resting on the steering wheel, its small toes curled around the wheel’s rim.

In its hands was a book, which it read intently in this awkward position, its childish voice reading aloud.

“Many years later, as he faced the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buendía was to remember…”

“…a fleeting tremor, the skin melting in a pale sweat, the eyes filling with tears, the entire body giving off a mournful lament… bearing the impact with stoic dignity and admirable courage…”

“José Arcadio felt himself lifted up into the air towards a realm of pure bliss…”

The reading stopped. “What’s a ‘realm of pure bliss’?” it asked itself.

After a moment of thought, it murmured, “But it sounds… fun… I’ll write it down and tell Mommy. She’ll be happy…”

It pulled a pen from where it was tucked into its shoulder and began writing in a notebook, the letters crooked and childish.

Notes about what to say to Mommy when they met.

    And questions to ask.

The thick notebook was already more than half full, filled with words copied from books; it couldn’t write on its own yet.

    Reading aloud as it wrote:

“Mommy, I want to take you on a thrilling ride to a realm of pure bliss.”

“Mm…” It nodded in satisfaction, tucked the pen back into its shoulder, seemingly pleased with its writing.

Although it didn’t understand the meaning, it knew it expressed happiness. That was enough.

Closing the notebook, it hugged it to its chest, raised its small face, closed its eyes, and listened to the primal call within.

“Mommy… Yibai can drive now… Yibai will be there soon…”

Chapter 86: Seeds of a Long Journey p1

    “Eh? Yao, what’s wrong?”

Instead of the adorable, just-woken-up look she’d expected, her sister appeared to be in pain. Lin Xiwan grabbed the tissue box and a bottle of water, jumped out of the jeep, and rushed to her side.

Helping her sit up and lean against the car, she wiped Lin Jiayao’s mouth and patted her back, offering her the water.

“What’s wrong, Yao? Where does it hurt?” Lin Xiwan asked, concerned. She needed to know if her sister was still conscious.

“Nothing…” Lin Jiayao took the water, gulped it down, swished it around her mouth, and spat it out.

The water, darkening the asphalt as it splashed, reminded her of the thick, black blood that had spurted from the Lurker’s severed neck.

And the sickening crunch of bone…

It tasted even worse than a Biter.

    Ugh—

After a few dry heaves, Lin Jiayao took a tissue and wiped her mouth, finally feeling a bit better.

“I’m… just carsick,” she said, looking at her sister’s worried face.

“Carsick… because we slept outside and you were in the wind this morning?” Lin Xiwan rubbed her forehead, feeling a pang of guilt.

“It’s okay, I feel much better now.” Lin Jiayao looked around and saw tall buildings; they were inside a city.

Had they reached Qingzhou City already…? Why hadn’t her sister woken her?

Lin Xiwan didn’t dwell on it. She lifted Lin Jiayao, avoiding the vomit on the ground, and placed her back in the passenger seat.

“Just hold on a little longer, Yao, we’re almost there… I’ll drive slowly.” She took a rifle from the back and handed it to her sister. “Here, hold this.”

Lin Jiayao took the rifle, closed the car door, and then, unable to contain her curiosity, asked, “Sister, how long was I asleep?”

“How long? About an hour and a half… The roads into the city were mostly blocked. I had to take a long detour to find a clear path.”

The road was clear, their speed slow, so Lin Xiwan turned to look at her sister.

Was it just her imagination, or did her sister seem… resentful?

As if she had done something wrong.

“You didn’t sleep long, just a little over an hour…” she explained. “I had to take a detour, and I wanted you to rest, so I didn’t wake you.”

“Oh…” Lin Jiayao sighed and leaned back against the headrest, a slightly frustrated look on her face.

Her sister had meant well… she couldn’t blame her.

It was her fault for not being more explicit, saying something like, “Absolutely wake me up.”

I’ll be more specific next time.

Perhaps she could try waking herself up.

Roll out of the car, log into the fourth zombie mid-roll, activate it, hit the ground, and be jolted awake.

That might work; it would just look like a clumsy fall.

The fourth zombie was still extracting. Lin Jiayao gripped the rifle and looked at the road ahead.

As they approached the university gate, two guards wearing cloth masks approached the jeep. Lin Xiwan stopped the car and rummaged in the back.

“Little sisters, hand me those… yes, two of those. And put them on yourselves as well…”

She had the two girls find the gas masks.

She’d taken them from the Voodoo Cult outpost.

Other camps, having heard Survivor’s Light’s announcement, had likely started taking precautions.

But Lin Xiwan, like everyone else, hadn’t seen the true horror of the fungal zombies and still felt a sense of disbelief.

She had even forgotten to wear a mask earlier, on the highway.

Before the two guards reached them, she and Lin Jiayao had put on the masks and goggles.

They sat in the car, Lin Xiwan’s hands on the steering wheel, Lin Jiayao holding the rifle.

The two guards, reaching the jeep, looked through the broken windshield, and paused, momentarily stunned.

Even with the gas masks covering half their faces, their beauty was evident.

The older one looked aloof, the younger one slightly more delicate, though also expressionless, somehow more approachable.

And the observant guard also noticed the two little girls in the back.

Besides them, there didn’t seem to be any other threat in the dilapidated jeep.

Such a group would put anyone at ease.

“Where are you lovely ladies coming from? Did you hear about this place on the radio?” The guard with a blue bandana and a triangular mask lowered his gun, his tone slightly flirtatious.

He didn’t seem to perceive them as a threat, at least not outwardly.

“Yangzhou City. Radio.” Lin Xiwan, not one for small talk, especially not with strangers, replied curtly, then, in front of the two guards, slowly raised her right hand.

Blood, glowing with blood crystal light, pulsed from her heart, flowing through her veins and into her hand.

“An Awakened?” The man’s tone instantly turned serious. “Are you here to purchase supplies or…?”

“Staying for a few days, replenishing supplies,” Lin Xiwan replied.

    Staying a few days?

People passing through usually didn’t stay overnight; they were wary of being robbed in unfamiliar camps.

Those who requested to stay usually intended to observe and then perhaps settle down.

“Alright, I’ll have someone escort you in. Just follow her,” the man nodded, stepping aside.

He didn’t mention the blood crystal cost for accommodation.

Whenever a new Awakened arrived, their camp leader would personally welcome them. If they joined, they wouldn’t have to pay; the camp was self-sufficient.

They would only discuss fees if they decided not to join.

    The guard used his walkie-talkie.

Only when Lin Xiwan drove the jeep to the main gate did someone manually open the electric sliding gate.

A young woman on a bicycle, panting, rode towards them.

“Follow me!” she called out, waving, and then, climbing back onto her bike, rode down a side road.

Lin Jiayao, her hand on the window, activated Bone Spike Lurker, scanning for any unusual activity.

Lin Xiwan slowly followed the bicycle.

The young woman on the bike led them to a dormitory building, stopped, and looked back at the jeep.

Squinting, she saw two women in the car, their long hair visible, but her nearsightedness blurred the details.

Curious, she walked closer to the passenger side, finally getting a clearer look.

    Pretty sisters!

    “Clink—”

She took out a ring of keys, blinked at the pretty girl in the passenger seat, who looked about her age, and asked, “Which room… would you like?”

Before anyone in the car could answer, she blurted out, “I recommend 111, 611, or 711. The ‘eleven’ rooms are the largest on each floor!”

“111 then,” Lin Xiwan said coldly, noticing the girl staring intently at her sister.

“Okay, here’s the key for 111. You can park anywhere in the courtyard. Someone will come find you later.” The girl handed the key to Lin Jiayao.

Their fingers brushed as the key changed hands, and the girl blushed.

“I… I’ll go find Sister Wanzi. You can go to the dorm first. It’s straight ahead through the main entrance…”

She quickly climbed onto her bike and sped away, disappearing around the corner.

Lin Xiwan drove into the dormitory courtyard and parked in front of room 111.

People in the dormitory seemed to notice their arrival, some curious faces peering out from the windows.

Lin Xiwan would have preferred a room on a higher floor, but the first floor was more convenient for taking care of her sister; she wouldn’t have to carry her up and down the stairs, and she could keep an eye on the supplies in the jeep.

And even if she could carry the jeep upstairs, she wasn’t about to carry it to the sixth or seventh floor.

“Wait in the car, I’ll open the door.” Lin Xiwan took the key from Lin Jiayao and unlocked the door.

The smell of mildew and dust hit her as she opened the door. It was a four-person dorm room, two bunk beds covered in dust.

It seemed to have been unoccupied for a long time.

Giving her sister an okay sign, Lin Xiwan grabbed a rag hanging by the door and started wiping the dust off one of the chairs, creating a clean spot for her sister to sit.

A minute later, she returned to the jeep, lifted Lin Jiayao, and, carrying her and the two little girls, entered the dorm.

Meanwhile, the girl on the bicycle had reached an administrative building.

Just as she stopped, a group of people emerged.

Seeing the short-haired woman with a purple bandana leading the group, the girl waved.

“Sister Wanzi, Sister Wanzi! We have new guests!”

“I know, the guard told me,” the woman, called Sister Wanzi, said, shaking her head. Her short hair was black.

“And, call me Sister Wan, not Sister Wanzi.”

    “Okay, Sister Wanzi.”

    “Sigh…”

The woman, seemingly giving up on correcting her, asked about the newcomers. “Tell me about them.”

“Four women, one older, three younger. The older one looks about eighteen or nineteen, the slightly younger one about fourteen or fifteen, and the other two are around seven or eight…”

The girl described them in detail, mentioning their weapons and focusing on their appearance.

“Alright, alright, I get it,” Sister Wan interrupted, waving her hand dismissively.

Most of what the girl said was irrelevant. She just wanted to know about their weapons and their attitude.

As for their looks… being pretty increased your chances of survival in the apocalypse; it meant you could find someone to rely on.

But being pretty wouldn’t help them drive a dilapidated jeep all the way to this camp. Their strength was what mattered.

    “Building seventeen, right?”

“Yes, I took them to Building Seventeen.”

    “Good.”

After confirming their location, Sister Wan and her group headed towards Building Seventeen.

It wasn’t far. They quickly reached the dormitory building and saw the battered jeep parked in front of room 111, its dented and twisted body covered in dark red bloodstains.

A vehicle with a story, clearly.

Entering the building, Sister Wan didn’t go directly to room 111 but turned and entered room 101.

Without knocking, she opened the door and went inside, the others waiting outside.

“Auntie Lan, what’s the situation?” Sister Wan asked the woman, about fifty years old, wearing a tracksuit, who was sitting on a bed.

“A young woman carrying a younger girl, maybe middle school age, and two little children,” Auntie Lan replied. “Two Awakened.”

“Good.” Sister Wan sat down at a table, took out a walkie-talkie, and said, “Two bone fracture rings, one vehicle first aid kit, to Building Seventeen, room 101, quickly.”

    “Zzz… Roger, Sister Wanzi.”

    “Damn it! It’s Wan!”

    “Zzz…”

Two Awakened… probably the two older ones. Traveling with two young children suggested they were compassionate.

And the younger girl was likely injured, hence being carried.

Although she hadn’t met them yet, Sister Wan had formed a preliminary assessment of the newcomers.

Having survived a difficult battle, injured, compassionate, a car full of supplies but still searching for a camp.

They were probably looking for a place to recover. Perhaps she could persuade them to join the camp.

For that, she needed appropriate gifts, like bone fracture rings and some medical supplies.

Less than three minutes later, a man on a bicycle screeched to a halt in front of room 101, carrying a black plastic bag, his bike discarded carelessly.

“Sister Wanzi, I got the stuff.”

“It’s Wan!” Sister Wan took the bag, checked the contents, and then, carrying it, walked towards room 111.

The others followed, keeping a distance, staying out of sight of room 111.

Passing the jeep, Sister Wan glanced inside, noting the dried blood and the strong, metallic smell, confirming her suspicions.

    “Knock, knock, knock—”

She knocked on the door of room 111.

“My name is Wan Zi. I’m currently in charge of camp affairs. I’d like to talk to our new arrivals.”

After announcing herself, she heard footsteps approaching, and then the door opened.

“May I come in?” She smiled at the young woman who opened the door, slightly taller than her.

“Yes.” Lin Xiwan nodded and stepped aside, not bothering to close the door.

She knew they were surrounded; it didn’t matter if the door was open or closed.

“Where are you all coming from?” Wan Zi entered and sat down on a dusty stool by the door, not seeming to mind. “Someone will be by later to clean the room. If you need anything, you can go to room 101 and find Auntie Lan. She’s in charge of Building Seventeen.”

She had already scanned the room upon entering, noting who was injured.

The beautiful young woman sitting on the far bed, her legs motionless… but she had no Awakened aura, while one of the little children had a faint one.

“Yangzhou City. It’s flooded,” Lin Xiwan sat down next to her sister, shielding her, and looked at the woman by the door.

“Oh… Yangzhou… that’s quite far. You must be tired,” Wan Zi nodded. “Where are you headed next? West, perhaps?”

“Yun Province had the most mushrooms before the apocalypse. If you go further west, you’ll reach it… Oh, I almost forgot, I brought you some things.”

She held out the plastic bag.

“No, thank you, we don’t need…”

“I already brought them, so just take them…”

While her sister was talking to the woman named Wan Zi, Lin Xiwan frowned slightly.

    She’d forgotten something important.

Like Gu Wangran before her, she’d been thinking about going to the largest seed bank; it would be the best place to restart agriculture.

But she’d forgotten one thing, just like Gu Wangran.

He hadn’t known about the fungal zombies initially, and she… had momentarily forgotten.

Yun Province had been the largest producer of mushrooms in China, both cultivated and wild.

Logically, it would also have the highest concentration of fungal zombies and infected.

And the seed bank was located in Kun City, within Yun Province.

They needed to reconsider their destination.

Wan Zi, after confirming they didn’t want the medical supplies, didn’t press further.

“Alright then, if you need anything, just go to room 101 and find Auntie Lan. And if you’re thinking of staying long-term, you’re welcome to join us. The camp gates are always open to you.”

She left, closing the door behind her.

This brief interaction had given her a good impression of the two young women. They seemed like they wanted to survive, to live a decent life in the apocalypse.

And they were Awakened. She would try her best to recruit them. If she failed, it would be their loss.

And she’d also learned about the Voodoo Cult’s movements towards Fuzhou.

Whether the information was accurate or not, she had to send someone to the radio station to stop the broadcasts, to avoid attracting the Voodoo Cult.

The cost of their stay would be considered payment for the information. As for repairing their vehicle, that would be a separate charge, unless they joined the camp.

Shortly after Wan Zi left, as her sister was preparing to nap, Lin Jiayao received a system notification.

A highlighted red “①” appeared beside the [Login] entry, just like when the Hunter had successfully extracted.

    Had it extracted already?

Lin Jiayao also lay down on the bunk bed. The bed was wide enough for both of them; they were both slender.

She snuggled closer to her sister, who instinctively pulled her into an embrace, her hand under Lin Jiayao’s head, her legs wrapped around hers.

Feeling safe and secure in her sister’s arms, Lin Jiayao closed her eyes.

In the darkness, she clicked on [Login]. Instead of the dark void, the evolution retention screen appeared.

    Hmm?

No blood crystals on the Hunter?

She’d been hoping to get some; she was slightly disappointed.

It had probably consumed them all. No more free blood crystals.

    Chapter 85: Devouring Evolution

“Qingzhou University Camp?” Lin Jiayao blinked, looking at her sister curiously.

But more importantly, where were her stockings?

“I heard about it on the radio yesterday morning while you were asleep. It sounded pretty good…”

Seeing her sister’s puzzled expression, Lin Xiwan continued, “Qingzhou City is almost a hundred kilometers from Fuzhou City. The sweep team shouldn’t reach that far.”

“We can also warn them to stop their automatic broadcasts, so they don’t attract the Voodoo Cult.”

There was another reason she didn’t mention in front of the two little girls who were eating their bread.

If the Qingzhou University Camp was indeed decent, she could leave the girls there.

After two days of observation, she was certain the older girl had Awakened an ability, though she hadn’t learned to control it yet.

Seeing her sister still looked puzzled, Lin Xiwan asked, “What’s wrong? Is there something you don’t understand?”

“Sister, I was wearing stockings when I fell asleep, right?” Lin Jiayao asked.

Although she couldn’t feel her legs, she clearly remembered her sister putting stockings on her, claiming it was to keep her warm.

She hadn’t worn stockings since kindergarten, except for the white tights, so the memory was distinct.

“Ah? Stockings?” Lin Xiwan’s expression remained neutral. “It was getting warm this morning, so I took them off so you wouldn’t overheat.”

“But I can’t feel heat in my legs,” Lin Jiayao blinked.

“But you were sweating. It’s uncomfortable to have them sticking to your skin, so I removed them.” Lin Xiwan’s expression didn’t change.

    “Then where are they?”

    “Impractical. I threw them away.”

Her sister’s answers were contradictory, and she seemed to be changing the subject.

It seemed she would never know the fate of those stockings.

But Lin Jiayao didn’t care; they were just stockings.

“Let’s go then.” She leaned back against the headrest, looking at the sunlit service area ahead.

With plenty of food and water, she felt both physically and mentally well, a welcome change after the storm.

Seeing her sister drop the stocking issue, Lin Xiwan breathed a sigh of relief and started the engine.

She swore, the stockings had been an accident.

She’d been holding her sleeping sister, keeping watch until dawn, then carefully moved her to the passenger seat and then—

Well, she’d accidentally ripped them with her fingernails while massaging her sister’s legs to improve circulation.

    And why had she lied?

    Ahem…

She didn’t know; it had been instinctive.

After all, massaging her sister’s legs while she was asleep… it did sound a bit… strange.

And she’d been bored, sitting still all night; anyone would be.

Thankfully, her innocent sister hadn’t suspected anything. Perhaps because she’d been by her side, her sister had slept soundly, not even waking when she’d moved her to the passenger seat.

From this service area to the Qingzhou City toll station was only about thirty or forty kilometers.

Considering the uncertain road conditions, they should arrive within forty or fifty minutes.

Lin Jiayao didn’t intend to log into Mask or Goldie during this time, and there wasn’t anything she needed to buy from Survivor’s Light. It was better to wait for the fourth zombie, the Hunter, to finish evolving.

After all, it was still in Fuzhou City; she had to get it out before it was caught in the Voodoo Cult’s sweep.

She didn’t think it could withstand an entire Voodoo Cult sweep team on its own.

According to the diary her sister had described, the sweep team was far more powerful than the small outpost they had encountered.

The sweep team would be led by at least a C-rank Awakened, with better equipment and weapons.

She would let the fourth zombie continue leveling up on autopilot for now.

After they reached the safety of the camp her sister had mentioned, she would control the other zombies.

Everything in the Hideout had been built, but they were all Lv.1. She didn’t know the requirements for upgrading them.

If it were like the Control Center, then she probably needed to evolve certain abilities first, like [Vigor] or [Robust].

“Sister,” Lin Jiayao said, “I want to nap for another five minutes… Can you wake me up then?”

Asking her sister to wake her was just an excuse; she didn’t want her consciousness to remain in the Hunter zombie’s body for too long.

She didn’t want to taste zombie flesh again.

She planned to log into the fourth zombie just before the five minutes were up.

    A perfect plan!

“Sleepyhead…” Lin Xiwan chuckled, stroking her sister’s head. “Still tired? Fine, but only five minutes more.”

“Mm.” Lin Jiayao nodded, closed her eyes, and started counting down mentally.

At about four minutes, she entered the system’s login interface.

    「No.1: [Mask] (Available for login)」
「No.2: [An Xiaoxi] (Available for login)」
    「No.3: [Goldie] (Available for login)」
    「No.4: [Unnamed] (Available for login)」

Both zombies that had evolved yesterday were now available; the twelve-hour evolution time was over.

They had probably finished evolving around midnight, while she was sleeping.

Thanks to the upgraded Control Center, both evolution and the cooldown timer were now twelve hours.

She wondered if upgrading it further would reduce the cooldown to within ten minutes.

Then, if she encountered a particularly dangerous area that she couldn’t clear, she could just repeatedly log in and die, waiting for the cooldown, retrieving the blood crystals from the corpse, and then repeating the process.

Like exploiting a bug, gaining blood crystals effortlessly.

    But reality was often disappointing.

Even the Lv.1 Control Center had a 12-hour cooldown; reducing it to ten minutes would probably take a long time, and a lot of blood crystals.

As she continued counting down, she heard her sister calling her.

    “Yao?”

The moment she heard her voice, Lin Jiayao clicked on the fourth zombie slot and logged in.

Meanwhile, Lin Xiwan was driving leisurely, enjoying the morning breeze.

“Yao? Yaoyao?” She tried waking her sister, even pinching her cheek gently, but seeing she was truly asleep, smiled indulgently.

“Such a sleepyhead… I’ll let you sleep a little longer and wake you up when we reach the camp… I’m not a monster, after all…” She chuckled to herself.

Imagining her sister’s sleepy “Thank you, Sister,” when she woke up, Lin Xiwan felt a surge of affection, even humming a tune.

    But she quickly stopped.

I shouldn’t be too loud, I might wake her up~

Thinking this, she even slowed down to give her sister a more peaceful sleep.

They might reach the camp a little later, but they had left early; they should still arrive at Qingzhou University before ten o’clock.

Unlike the relaxed Lin Xiwan, Lin Jiayao was now—

    Completely consumed by bloodlust.

    “Roar—”

A chilling roar echoed from the underground parking lot of the Fuzhou Commercial Hotel, and then a figure burst out of the darkness and into the sunlight.

    “Roar—”

    “Sizzle…”

A horrifying, upright zombie, its muscles exposed, roared in fury under the scorching sun.

Its flesh sizzled and smoked, slowly dissolving in the UV rays.

But it seemed oblivious to the pain, its roars echoing as if unleashing a long-suppressed rage.

Compared to yesterday, its body had changed.

The previously emaciated, three-meter-tall Hunter, hunched over due to its elongated limbs, could now stand completely upright.

New muscles bulged beneath its skin, not quite connected, seemingly designed for bursts of speed and agility.

And its hands had also changed.

The sickle-like claws were now straighter, more like blades, better suited for slashing.

Overall, the changes weren’t drastic; just more muscle and different hand weapons.

But Lin Jiayao and the zombie knew its true evolution.

    “Clang—”

Lin Jiayao’s vision was almost completely dark, only faint red silhouettes moving in the distance.

Instinctively, she lunged at the closest one, slashing through a streetlight and then, reaching a building, pounding on the wooden door with her bladed hands.

    “Crack—”

The flimsy door splintered; nothing could stop her.

She burst inside, lunging at a half-dormant Lurker, a blade plunging into its body.

Although Biters and Hunters were more common in Fuzhou City, other types of zombies also existed, just in smaller numbers.

    “Crack—”

The Lurker’s head was severed. Lin Jiayao bent down and tore into the exposed neck, her four bone mandibles crunching through bone and flesh.

    Like eating crispy potato chips.

As she fed, her body changed.

The smooth, skin-covered blades on her hands developed jagged edges, like a Lurker’s bone spikes.

Bone spikes erupted from her spine, piercing through her skin.

And her joints thickened, like those of an evolved bone-type zombie.

It was evolving as it ate?!

After devouring the Lurker, blood crystal and all, Lin Jiayao discarded the remains and charged towards the next red silhouette.

Smashing through windows, tearing down walls… nothing could stop her relentless hunt.

Seemingly less intelligent than a typical Hunter.

And as it hunted, its body continued to change.

Its jaws grew thicker, its teeth transforming into spiraling bone grinders.

Its biting power had reached monstrous levels.

It could even sink its teeth into concrete walls and gnaw its way through.

And the blades on its hands, now dark red and black, had visible veins and blood vessels, as if being supplied with blood and energy.

The spikes on the blades had extended, covering the entire length. Finally, after failing to bite through a metal billboard, Lin Jiayao stood up, her three-meter-tall body towering over the street, and raised her arms.

Blood, infused with blood crystals, flowed into her arms, the two chainsaw blades extending from her hands pulsing with power.

    “Whirr…”

With a grinding sound, the chainsaws spun rapidly. The initial rotation tore through the flesh and muscle connecting them to her arms, sending sprays of blood flying.

    “Whirr…”

She swung the chainsaw blades, sparks flying as they tore through the metal billboard.

Meanwhile, Lin Xiwan had parked the jeep on a street in Qingzhou City.

Qingzhou University was just across the street.

It was time to wake her sister and have her hold the rifle. This would show the people in the camp they weren’t helpless.

“Yao, Yao? Wake up, sleepyhead.” Lin Xiwan smiled and shook her sister gently, then, seeing no response, shook her harder.

“If you’re still sleepy, you can sleep after we reach the camp. Don’t be lazy—”

She pinched her sister’s nose playfully.

This seemed to work; Lin Jiayao’s eyes slowly opened, her gaze unfocused.

Just as Lin Xiwan was about to tease her about her sleepy state, her sister’s eyes suddenly widened. She flung open the car door and tumbled out, collapsing onto the ground.

    “Ugh—”

Lin Jiayao vomited the remains of her breakfast.

  • Sickly Girl Doesn’t Die in Zombie Simulator 84p2

Chapter 84: Severed Body, Split Jaw p2

The man in sunglasses, his mouth still open, megaphone in hand, stared blankly at the empty street.

After a few seconds, a small voice from beside him snapped him out of his stupor. “It… it ran away?”

“Uh… never mind, back to the original plan…”

    “Boom—”

An explosion from another street interrupted him.

Suddenly realizing something, he ran to the other side of the roof and looked down.

    “Boom—”

Another explosion, smoke and flames rising.

Even with his naked eyes, he could see what was happening below in the searchlights’ beams.

That “broccoli” zombie, dragging its hundred zombie “dogs,” was running down the street, each step creating a tremor.

And the zombies in front, seemingly oblivious to danger, charged forward, triggering the mines in its path.

“Shit! Shit! Shit!!! It… shit,” he sputtered, then, into the megaphone, shouted, “Northwest corner!!! It’s back!!! It’s going for the bridge!!!”

The snipers grabbed their rifles and ran towards him.

And the machine gunner on the 20th floor, hearing the command on his walkie-talkie, hurriedly carried his heavy machine gun towards the southwest corner.

    “Boom—”

    “Boom—”

More explosions. Thanks to its zombie “minesweepers,” the monstrous zombie remained unharmed.

And as the “minesweepers” were blown to pieces, the chains automatically detached and retracted, other zombies from the “broccoli” jumping down to replace them.

The zombie, with its impenetrable defenses, was systematically clearing a path through the minefield.

The man in sunglasses had already given up hope halfway through.

The zombie was now out of range of the heavy machine gun, and the sniper rifles were useless against it.

They could only watch as it reached the end of the street and then, still dragging a large number of zombies, stepped onto the bridge.

Looking at the retreating zombie, the man in sunglasses took out his lighter and relit his unlit cigar.

“Fucking… impressive,” he muttered through gritted teeth.

“Let’s go, let’s go, nothing to see here. Back to the original plan.”

He’d seen many strange things in the apocalypse, but this… this was the strangest.

A zombie that could dodge, escape, use other zombies as minesweepers, and completely ignore delicious, living humans. How… how was that even possible?

Its speed and efficiency were beyond his comprehension.

Its intelligence surpassed any zombie he’d ever encountered.

Almost as if it were controlled by an Awakened.

But… he’d never seen a control-type Awakened who could control so many zombies simultaneously.

Was it a mutated zombie created with a specific combination of blood crystals?

Or… a truly intelligent, evolved zombie?

He would probably never know. He just prayed he would never encounter it again.

Unlike the stunned group on the rooftop, Lin Jiayao, controlling the zombie horde below, was relatively calm.

Since she didn’t want to kill those people, and she needed to cross the bridge, this elaborate charade had been necessary.

And it had worked; she hadn’t been injured and hadn’t wasted much time.

Much better than climbing up and down dozens of floors.

She remembered the agonizing climb down from the 35th floor when she’d been just a head… pure torture. She’d had to jump to reach the ground quickly.

Crossing the bridge, leading her hundred-zombie “dogs”, riding the Armored zombie, her procession occupied all four lanes.

Like an emperor leading his troops.

Hidden within the mass of zombies, using Bone Spike Lurker to navigate, Lin Jiayao found this method surprisingly effective.

Perhaps this was the intended use of Bone Manipulator; it felt… safe.

She continued towards the extraction point, surrounded by her zombie bodyguards.

Along the way, she encountered a maternity hospital. As expected, it had been completely looted, not even a single needle left. Medical supplies were always in high demand.

But she found some medicine in a pharmacy next to the hospital.

    Prenatal vitamins. Nothing else.

All other medicines, useful or not, were gone. Only these orange vitamin bottles remained, a few missing, likely dropped and forgotten during the looting.

She had the zombie sweep the remaining bottles off the shelves and then secured them in the gaps between the metal plating on the Armored zombie, continuing towards the extraction point.

After almost an hour of non-stop running, Lin Jiayao finally reached the extraction point, her zombie army entering the designated parking garage.

    【Extracting in: 7.1】

Waiting for the countdown, Lin Jiayao entered the asset transfer interface.

She moved the nuts, bolts, and multi-tool from the safehouse, the prenatal vitamins from the Armored zombie, and the blood crystals from both the Armored zombie and the ordinary zombies into the warehouse before exiting.

An extra one and a half blood crystals, better than nothing.

After her windfall in America, one and a half crystals seemed insignificant.

She returned to her body and slowly opened her eyes in the darkness.

She habitually scanned her surroundings and realized her sister was lying on her lap.

And in the moonlight, she could clearly see that her sister’s hands were inside her stockings.

The stockings clung to her sister’s hands, which were gently caressing Lin Jiayao’s thighs.

As if using her legs and stockings for warmth.

Since she couldn’t feel her legs anyway, it didn’t matter; whatever made her sister happy.

Thinking this, Lin Jiayao closed her eyes and looked at the evolution options.

    「Please retain your evolution」
「1、【Severed Form Lv.1 (Gold): Allows you to abandon your human form, shedding your weak flesh for a new form better suited for controlling zombies. All bone-related abilities are greatly enhanced】」
「2、【Bone Spike Lurker Lv.4 (Gray): Increases Lurker precision and range to 200m. Can simulate terrain within 100m by emitting vibrations】」
「3、【Bone Manipulator Lv.2 (Gold): Your bone spikes mutate further, allowing you to control more zombies or living creatures. Controlled bone spikes can remain active for a short period after being severed from your body】」

The first skill meant abandoning her humanity, the second was just an incremental upgrade, and the third seemed like the most sensible choice.

Bone Manipulator Lv.2 added “more” control, and the additional description suggested that severed bone spikes could remain active for a short time.

    A significant upgrade.

Now, she knew that multiple types of zombies had control abilities.

Whether fungal, bone-type, or hive-type, they could all control other zombies and even humans.

But each had its own advantages and disadvantages.

Fungal zombies had a wide range and high infectivity, with an almost 100% fatality rate and absolute obedience, but the downside was inheriting memories, which could cause mental instability.

Bone-type zombies had a shorter range and limited control capacity, but also a 100% fatality rate, and they could utilize the controlled zombies’ abilities.

And Hive Zombies, focused on quantity, also had high infectivity but a 0% fatality rate, and the zombies they controlled with synergistic pheromones could only follow simple commands, mindless drones, only becoming a threat in large numbers.

These different evolutionary paths all seemed to grant increasing control over their own kind.

She wondered what the evolved forms of Hunters, Sprinters, and other zombies she hadn’t encountered yet looked like. Were there zombies specialized in individual combat power?

Lost in her thoughts, Lin Jiayao felt a warmth spreading through her bones, the evolution completing in an instant.

Now, if she wanted to, those Corpse Birds wouldn’t even be able to get within 20 meters of her without being pulled down by her bone spikes.

A vast improvement compared to before.

She could even control them remotely by firing detached bone spikes, shattering their bones.

After choosing the evolution, Lin Jiayao opened the Hideout interface, looking at the now available [Medical Station] and [Workbench].

They required two and three blood crystals respectively, a total of five.

She had 14.5, leaving 9.5 after building both.

    A significant expense…

The Training Grounds had been worth the cost, so after a brief hesitation, she clicked “build” on both.

    “Clang, thud—”

A few perfunctory construction sounds, and two new structures appeared in the X-shaped Hideout.

She first looked at the [Medical Station], which she had high hopes for.

As she focused on it, a system window popped up, displaying four medical items, none of them familiar.

At the top was a red medical pouch, priced at 100g of blood crystals.

「1、【Random First Aid Kit 100g】: Generates a first aid kit based on the host’s current condition」

The prices increased further down the list.

「2、【Blood Crystal Combat Stimulant 200g】: Increases health regeneration, reduces damage taken, and reduces pain perception for 900 seconds」

「3、【Blood Crystal Serum 500g】: Specially processed liquid blood crystals, absorbed and processed faster than solid blood crystals」

「4、【Autopilot Surgery 1000g】: Allows the host to perform a perfect surgery, including but not limited to limb reattachment, bone setting, internal organ repair, and intracranial hemorrhage treatment…」

Only four options for the Lv.1 Medical Station.

The fourth option intrigued her the most.

    System-assisted surgery?

    What did that even mean?

And it was so expensive, two blood crystal stones.

“Can it perform brain surgery?” Lin Jiayao asked mentally. “Can I perform brain surgery on myself?”

    「Yes」

    “Guaranteed survival after surgery?”

    「No」

    “Oh.”

So, she couldn’t buy a life for two blood crystals.

This was probably only useful in near-death situations… performing surgery on herself…

She dismissed the Medical Station; the Combat Stimulant and the First Aid Kit seemed like the most useful and affordable options.

Of course, for other Awakened, even those weren’t cheap.

She turned her attention to the [Workbench].

A window popped up, but unlike the Medical Station, it was empty, with a single line of text below.

「Please place the item you wish to modify」

Lin Jiayao realized she didn’t have any weapons in her warehouse or safehouse; there was nothing to modify.

She would have to test this function later.

Exiting the system interface, Lin Jiayao opened her eyes.

She wasn’t sleepy, and she wanted to shift her position, but her sister was still lying on her lap.

She reached out, trying to adjust the seat.

But her movement woke her sister.

“Yao? Why are you awake?” Lin Xiwan looked at her sister, her right hand supporting Lin Jiayao, her left brushing her hair back.

“Couldn’t sleep sitting up…” Lin Jiayao honestly explained her predicament.

She was in an awkward situation.

Logging in again would deplete her mental strength, and she didn’t have enough time to rest properly, but she wasn’t sleepy enough to sleep now.

Hopefully, increasing her Vigor would eventually eliminate the need for sleep. Sleeping felt like a waste of time.

“Can’t sleep sitting up?” Lin Xiwan looked at the seat, unsure what to do.

The space behind the seat was filled with supplies. Reclining it would require moving a lot of things, which was too much trouble.

    “I know!”

    An idea struck her.

She could lie down between the seats, like before, and have her sister lie on top of her.

    “Click—”

She pushed the gear stick towards the center console to create more space, reached between her sister’s legs, gently lifted her, and placed her on her lap.

    “Huh?”

Lin Jiayao was about to ask what she was doing when she realized she was now sitting on her sister’s lap, facing her.

After making sure Lin Jiayao was stable, Lin Xiwan wrapped her arms around her waist, shifted from the driver’s seat to the passenger side, and rested her head on the still-warm seat.

And Lin Jiayao leaned against her sister, their foreheads almost touching. Lin Jiayao’s head bumped against her sister’s chest, preventing a collision.

“Can you sleep like this?” Lin Xiwan asked, seemingly pleased with her idea, her arms around Lin Jiayao’s waist.

“I can’t…” Lin Jiayao placed her hands on the seat, looking at her sister. “Isn’t this… hot?”

“You’re right.” Lin Xiwan nodded, tightened her embrace, and gently pushed Lin Jiayao’s head against her chest. “But at least you won’t be cold. Now be good and go to sleep.”

    “Sigh…”

    Lin Jiayao sighed inwardly.

Her sister, usually so capable and composed, always seemed to regress into a childlike state around her.

Perhaps because she didn’t have to maintain her usual facade…

Unable to resist, Lin Jiayao might as well enjoy it.

She nuzzled her head against her sister’s chest, finding a comfortable spot, wrapped her arms around her waist, and closed her eyes.

The next day, when Lin Jiayao woke up, she was back in the passenger seat, feeling the vibrations and the hum of the engine.

“You’re awake? Is the engine too loud?” Her sister, smiling, handed her half a bottle of water and a piece of bread. “Breakfast~”

“I filled up the tank. We’re going to the Qingzhou Academy Camp today. The radio broadcast made it sound decent.”

Chapter 84: Severed Body, Split Jaw p1

Six hours was more than enough for Lin Jiayao to scavenge the entire night.

But she didn’t intend to. She needed a few hours of sleep to recover her mental strength.

As she walked towards the extraction point, she used Bone Spike Lurker to scan the surroundings.

Although she wasn’t familiar with Xin City’s layout, she wouldn’t miss any nearby hospitals, pharmacies, or hardware stores.

Mask’s Bone Spike Lurker now had a 200-meter range and could simulate terrain within 100 meters. This must be Lv.4.

It would probably appear as an evolution option after she extracted.

Walking and searching, Lin Jiayao soon found a potential source of medical supplies.

According to Bone Spike Lurker, it was a clinic on the ground floor of a residential building, seemingly empty.

She decided to check it out. With her long, three-meter legs, she had to duck slightly to enter the small clinic.

“Click, click, click, click, click, click—”

The thin bone spikes extending from her split jaw clicked against any solid surface – walls, glass – creating a sound like thousands of insects crawling.

This was to enhance the feedback from Bone Spike Lurker, allowing her to detect any usable medical supplies without having to search manually.

But unfortunately, the clinic had been completely looted.

Compared to pharmacies, clinics usually stocked more commonly used medical items, so it wasn’t surprising that it had been picked clean.

Lin Jiayao left the clinic and continued towards the extraction point.

Even in smaller Chinese cities, hospitals and clinics were relatively common. If she kept walking, she would eventually find one.

But before finding a pharmacy or a hospital, she found a hardware store.

Compared to a pharmacy, the hardware store was less appealing.

Although most of the items had been taken, many small parts remained, mostly rusted.

Tools like hammers, pliers, and screwdrivers were gone.

But screws, nuts, and bolts were scattered everywhere. Lin Jiayao used her thin bone spikes to pick them up and put them in the safehouse.

She had expected them to take up four slots, but they stacked neatly into a single grid.

After some testing, she discovered each grid could hold ten nuts or bolts, so she filled the safehouse with the rusted parts.

She could always discard them later if she found something more valuable.

Filling the safehouse was a priority; it was her safety net.

Her warehouse was still mostly empty; she could fit many more things in it, anything, just in case she needed them later.

After filling the safehouse with nuts and bolts, Lin Jiayao started searching for a multi-tool with Bone Spike Lurker.

If she could find one, she would have all the materials for the Workbench.

Scanning the store, she didn’t find any.

But there were several sealed boxes in the storage room at the back; she couldn’t see through them with Bone Spike Lurker.

    “Click, click, click—”

Walking towards the storage room, Lin Jiayao carefully retracted her bone spikes and squeezed through the doorway, which was easily large enough for a normal human.

Opening the torn cardboard boxes, she found several boxes of nuts and bolts.

Disappointed, she retracted her spikes, left the hardware store, and continued crawling through the night, increasing her speed.

Soon, she found an auto repair shop and, inside, a multi-tool.

She emptied a grid of nuts and bolts and placed the multi-tool inside.

Now she had all the materials for the Workbench.

She still had thirteen blood crystals in her warehouse, no need to worry about that for now. Even if she extracted now, it wouldn’t be a loss.

She could always log into An Xiaoxi and buy some cheap medical supplies to make up the 500g.

In the distance, she saw a bridge. The extraction point was on the other side.

Just as she was about to sprint towards it, her Bone Spike Lurker detected three strong heartbeats two hundred meters away.

    Humans?

She looked up and saw a faint glint of light from a nearby building.

Bone Spike Lurker picked up the sound of a bullet being chambered.

    No time to dodge.

    “Click, click—”

Lin Jiayao’s jaw snapped upwards, the two halves, like a Venus flytrap, closing around her head, the bone spikes interlocking, forming a protective shield.

Since Bone Spike Lurker’s range was circular, if the enemy was on a high vantage point, they would be very close by the time she detected them.

Like the Armored zombies on the unfinished building.

A bullet shattered one of the bone spikes protecting her head and then ricocheted off her forehead.

Thanks to the bone spike’s deflection, the bullet hadn’t penetrated her skull.

Lin Jiayao immediately scuttled sideways towards a nearby store, smashing through the glass windows and entering.

Inside, she extended a bone spike, removed the bullet, and let her bones regenerate.

Were these… humans hunting mutated zombies?

There wasn’t a back exit. Going out would expose her to the sniper.

She hadn’t expected to encounter survivors at this time, and this was her first time being attacked by them during a login.

After all, she looked like a valuable, mutated zombie, worth a lot of blood crystals.

But Lin Jiayao remained calm, weighing her options.

Avoiding them would be a waste of time; she would have to detour through another street to reach the bridge.

Mask didn’t have a gun, and she didn’t want to climb dozens of floors to confront them.

Even if she won, they probably wouldn’t have as many blood crystals as a mutated zombie, and she didn’t need their supplies.

Fighting them was a waste of time.

The gunshots had attracted Biters and Lurkers, but the humans hadn’t fired again.

It seemed they were planning to wait until daylight, when the zombies dispersed, to collect the blood crystals.

A group of specialized nighttime zombie hunters, possibly even with an Awakened among them.

She had no time to waste; she needed to extract and… sleep.

Lin Jiayao waited inside the store, just outside the sniper’s line of sight, until a few Biters, attracted by the gunfire, wandered past.

Any zombie passing the store, whether Biter or Lurker, was dragged inside by a bone spike.

    They growled but couldn’t resist.

Meanwhile, on the rooftop, the humans weren’t as calm.

“Did you misfire, Mei?” a young man asked, chewing on something, looking through binoculars.

Beside him, a young woman, about 20 years old, lay prone at the edge of the roof.

A hole had been made in the wall for her to aim through. A middle-aged man, also with binoculars, stood to her right.

And at each corner of the building, three or four people were busy: a sniper and two or three spotters.

They seemed to be from the same camp.

Lin Jiayao’s Bone Spike Lurker had only detected the closest team. If she could have sensed the entire group, she would have been glad she’d chosen to avoid them.

The wind on the rooftop was strong. The young woman, aiming her rifle, didn’t hear her brother’s muffled question.

“Strange… I’m sure I hit it… Uncle Bai, you saw it too, right?”

She looked at the middle-aged man.

Even without lights, the moonlight was bright enough for them to see what was happening below.

“You definitely hit it,” Uncle Bai nodded. “It seems… it knew where we were and hid…”

He hesitated as he said “hid.”

They had encountered bone-type zombies with long-range detection before, even Armored ones.

But even those, upon sensing their heartbeats, would charge towards the building, trigger the mines they had planted, and then wait to be shot.

But this strange bone-type zombie, the moment it sensed them, had defended itself and then… hidden?

    Unheard of.

    “Boom—”

An explosion from another street, likely a larger zombie like an Armored one stepping on a mine, made them focus.

The explosion would attract more zombies; they had to prioritize the mutated ones.

Usually, after a mutated zombie died, other zombies would gather to feed, easy targets.

This was tedious work, requiring them to take turns manning the rifles, practically all night, until dawn.

    “Whirr—”

    “Lights on—”

Shortly after the explosion, a sound like a tractor starting, and then the searchlights surrounding the building lit up, illuminating the area.

“An Armored one is coming, get ready. Brother, keep an eye on that hiding zombie. Uncle Bai.”

“Mm, wait for it to step on a mine,” Uncle Bai replied calmly.

The three held their breath, watching the Armored zombie lumber towards the building.

Once it got within a hundred meters, it would enter the minefield. They waited for the explosions.

But just as they were watching the Armored zombie intently, it suddenly stopped.

“What’s happening?” the young man, called Brother, frowned and adjusted the focus on his binoculars.

He had been watching the strange, mutated zombie’s movements, ready to report its location to his sister the moment it reappeared.

That zombie was so pale, and its large, jellyfish-like form was unforgettable; he wouldn’t mistake it.

But just now, a heavily armored Armored zombie had entered his field of vision, seemingly heading towards them.

And then, within his observation range, it had stopped.

He quickly adjusted the focus on his binoculars and froze, forgetting to chew his tobacco.

    What… the hell…?

Through the magnified lens, he saw several thin, white bone spikes extending from the clothing store he had been watching, piercing the Armored zombie and dragging it inside.

Soon, not just the Armored zombie, but also several Biters and Lurkers, attracted by the explosion, were also impaled and dragged into the store.

The young man, his mouth agape, looked at Uncle Bai, who was also staring at him, wide-eyed.

They both looked at the young woman, who had sat up and was now looking at them.

“Holy shit… what was that…?” the young man finally mumbled, breaking the silence.

After so many years, he’d never seen anything like it, a zombie running away, dragging other zombies with it.

A sense of foreboding washed over him.

“Boss! Boss!” The young woman didn’t wait; she stood up and shouted towards the center of the rooftop.

This situation was beyond their comprehension; they needed the Boss’s experience.

Their well-traveled Boss, who had migrated from another province, must have seen something like this before.

“What’s going on?” a shirtless man, his muscular body clad only in a thin jacket, stood up from a beach chair in the center of the rooftop and walked towards them.

He wore pink children’s sunglasses, shorts, a cigar in his mouth, and a megaphone in his hand; the “lights on” command had come from him.

He looked more like he was on vacation than hunting zombies.

Taking the binoculars from the young man, he flipped up the sunglasses, revealing his eyes.

Those children’s sunglasses were surprisingly functional.

He looked through the binoculars, towards where the laser pointer had been aimed.

    “Huh?”

He quickly saw the Armored zombie being dragged into the store and the other zombies being pulled into the blind spot by the bone spikes.

Even the Armored zombie couldn’t resist.

    Definitely a big one.

He lowered the binoculars, turned, raised the megaphone, and addressed the other hunting teams on the rooftop. “Everyone, hold your fire! Don’t waste your bullets, come over here!”

    “We have a big one!”

Hearing his call, the others quickly gathered, setting up their rifles on the wall.

Some even brought stools; it was a matter of personal preference.

They were familiar with this procedure. Something similar had happened a year ago.

A seven-meter-tall Armored zombie, its body covered in layers of car doors and metal plates, barely even flinching when it stepped on a mine.

They had gathered all their snipers then, ignoring other targets, focusing solely on that one Armored zombie.

Such large Armored zombies were slow but incredibly durable.

A single sniper round would barely penetrate its skull. Even with seven or eight snipers firing headshots, they couldn’t do much damage.

And when the zombie finally reacted, raising its arms to protect its head, even the sniper rifles were useless.

They had to bring out their trusty Type 85 heavy machine gun and fire dozens of armor-piercing, incendiary rounds to finally penetrate its armor and destroy its head.

Learning from that experience, spotters were already heading downstairs to retrieve the heavy machine gun.

“We got eleven blood crystals last time… this one should be worth at least eight or nine,” the man in sunglasses said, his voice filled with excitement.

Eight or nine blood crystals in one night was a huge haul for a hunting team.

Enough to pay them to climb down dozens of floors to retrieve the crystals from the corpse and then return to the camp for a few days of rest, no longer having to sleep on this rooftop.

Everyone, their eyes glued to their scopes and binoculars, waited for the zombie to reappear.

The sound of distant explosions, mines being triggered, was ignored – the zombies that triggered the mines couldn’t climb up to the rooftop anyway; they would just wander around on the ground floor.

    “Holy shit, what’s it doing?”

To their surprise, the area in the blind spot seemed to be… overflowing.

Several Biters were now dangling from the bone spikes, pulled towards the store, and the hooks, seemingly insatiable, continued to drag in more zombies, even though there wasn’t enough space.

“Boss, machine gunner in position on the 20th floor,” a voice crackled from the walkie-talkie clipped to his shorts.

There was an open-air restaurant on the 20th floor of this building, another good vantage point, the other being the rooftop.

Heavy machine guns weren’t as accurate at long range as sniper rifles, so they were usually positioned closer to the target.

“Good job! Wait for my command!”

He tossed the walkie-talkie to a waiting subordinate and raised his binoculars again.

    “Boss! It’s moving!”

“Shut up! Shut up! This is important! I’m not blind!” He snapped at the excited spotter, a grin spreading across his face.

In the monotonous drudgery of zombie hunting, an exciting, risk-free event like this was a welcome adrenaline rush.

    Thrilling! Anticipation!

They could see the dangling zombies being pushed outwards. He raised the megaphone, ready to give the order to fire.

But as the creature in the blind spot emerged, everyone fell silent.

    What… the hell… is that?

A five-meter-tall Armored zombie, standing like a monolith, its body covered in a grotesque mass of dangling zombies, their necks impaled by bone spikes, like gruesome puppets.

Layers upon layers of zombies, draped over the Armored zombie.

From a distance, it looked like a giant, dark, pulsating human brain perched atop the Armored zombie.

Or, if you had to compare it to a more familiar object, a giant head of… broccoli.

A writhing, pulsating broccoli made of zombies.

And the Armored zombie’s own head was completely obscured.

Its arms, raised like a zombie’s, were covered in bone spikes, each spike connected to a zombie’s neck.

As if it were leading a hundred zombie “dogs” on leashes.

And then, to everyone’s astonishment, the dangling zombies suddenly turned…

    And ran?!

“Holy shit! Fire! Fire! Don’t let it escape!”

    “Bang! Bang!”

    “Bang—”

    “Bang—”

A volley of sniper fire, but the bullets only grazed the outer layer of zombies, not even penetrating.

Hearing the gunshots, the heavy machine gun on the 20th floor opened fire, a loud “rat-tat-tat,” but the distance was too great, the bullets missing as the giant zombie turned a corner and disappeared.

The man in sunglasses, his mouth still open, megaphone in hand, stared blankly at the empty street.

  • Sickly Girl Doesn’t Die in Zombie Simulator 83p2

Chapter 83: Do You Like Me? Part 2

After her sister’s examination, Lin Jiayao leaned against Lin Xiwan’s chest, closing her eyes for a brief rest.

She felt as if she had been carrying bricks all day, so exhausted she could fall asleep instantly.

But thanks to the [Robust] and [Vigor] evolutions, her recovery was fast.

As her sister slowed the jeep and pulled into a highway service area, Lin Jiayao opened her eyes and looked up at her.

“Don’t you want to rest a little longer?” Lin Xiwan asked, looking down at her sister after parking haphazardly.

She was about to pinch her sister’s cheek, as usual, when Lin Jiayao suddenly buried her face in Lin Xiwan’s chest, hugging her tightly.

The embrace was so tight that Lin Xiwan felt a little breathless; she’d never realized her sister was so strong.

“I’m sorry… I shouldn’t have left you alone to face those monsters…” Lin Xiwan kissed her sister’s hair, gently stroking her back.

She knew her sister was scared. It was her fault; she shouldn’t have driven into that field with its limited visibility.

She’d thought she’d found the perfect hiding spot; it had almost become their grave.

Lin Jiayao clung to her sister, silent.

Her sister was right; she was terrified. The fear, suppressed during the ordeal, now washed over her.

She wasn’t afraid of the monstrous bird.

She was afraid of losing her sister.

Just a few minutes without Bone Spike Lurker activated, and her sister had been gravely injured. The guilt was overwhelming.

She didn’t realize that even with Bone Spike Lurker activated, she wouldn’t have been able to prevent the attack – it couldn’t detect airborne threats.

“Sister…” Lin Jiayao sat up, her hands gripping her sister’s shoulders, her eyes red-rimmed. “Take me with you, wherever you go.”

She had decided; she would never let her sister out of her sight again.

She couldn’t bear the thought of something like this happening again, even if it meant clinging to her sister while she was using the toilet.

Lin Jiayao’s voice was hoarse, and hearing it, Lin Xiwan’s heart ached.

Those few minutes of separation, leaving her sister to fight the monster alone… it must have traumatized her.

But there had been no other choice… If she hadn’t absorbed the blood crystals and evolved, they both would have died.

Looking at her sister’s tearful eyes, Lin Xiwan’s heart softened.

    “Okay… okay… Sister promises, I promise anything… There, there…”

She stroked her sister’s head like a child.

But her sister didn’t seem appeased. “Promise,” she insisted, her eyes fixed on Lin Xiwan’s.

“Okay, I promise, I’ll take my dear Yaoyao with me, wherever I go.” Lin Xiwan raised her left hand, making a solemn vow. No promise was too much for her sister.

Then, knowing she had to change the subject, she decided to praise her sister.

“Yao, you were so brave… your aim was incredible,” she said, smiling, gently caressing her sister’s soft cheeks. “You might be a natural sharpshooter.”

    No, not just a natural.

Shooting that accurately at night, in that situation… even a trained marksman would struggle.

Her sister might truly have an unparalleled talent for shooting; they’d just never realized it.

Lin Jiayao wanted to say it was just practice, but she hadn’t fired a gun much in front of her sister, so she remained silent, her gaze fixed on her sister’s blood-soaked clothes.

The dried blood had formed dark red stains.

She hadn’t even been able to smell her sister’s scent earlier, only the metallic stench of blood. It had been unsettling.

“Sister, you’re dirty,” Lin Jiayao said, picking at a bloodstain on Lin Xiwan’s black tank top. “Change your clothes and wash up.”

“So you’re disgusted by me now, huh?” Lin Xiwan playfully rubbed her sister’s cheeks until they were red.

If her sister hadn’t been so upset, she would have pulled her into a hug and let her smell the blood to her heart’s content. How dare she be disgusted by her older sister?

“Wait, I’ll get some water,” Lin Xiwan said, also uncomfortable with being covered in dried blood. She placed her sister in the passenger seat and went to get water from the back.

    “Click—”

Turning around, she noticed the two little girls were still diligently loading bullets.

She’d almost forgotten about them in her concern for her sister.

“Good girls… you don’t have to load bullets anymore, the monsters are gone,” she said, stroking their heads. “Get some rest. If you need to use the restroom, tell Sister, okay? Don’t pee in the car.”

Hearing this, both girls looked at Lin Jiayao.

As if seeking her approval, as if her words carried more weight than Lin Xiwan’s.

“Just listen to your sister,” Lin Jiayao said without turning around.

She didn’t want to show any affection.

She was dreading the moment these two called her “Mommy”; she wouldn’t know how to explain that to her sister.

Hearing Lin Jiayao’s words, the two girls turned back to Lin Xiwan.

The younger one clung to her sister’s clothes, silent. The older one, with the ponytail, said softly, “Sister… pee-pee…”

They’d been holding it in since the field, too afraid to ask.

Now, finally, with Lin Jiayao’s permission, they dared to speak.

    “Okay, I’ll take you.”

Lin Xiwan took two large bottles of water from the back.

Carrying the water bottles, she went to the passenger side, opened the door, and lifted Lin Jiayao with one hand.

After her sister had secured her grip around her neck, she said to the two girls, “Come on, little sisters, follow me.”

Seeing their hesitation, she added gently, “If you’re scared, you can hold onto Sister’s… pants.”

She’d been about to say “clothes” but then remembered she wasn’t wearing any.

She couldn’t hold their hands while carrying Lin Jiayao.

She didn’t take them towards the service area but stopped a short distance from the car.

After what had happened earlier, she was still shaken.

The phantom pain in her abdomen persisted; even having evolved to C-rank, she couldn’t let her guard down.

It was better to stay close to the car, in case there were other hidden dangers in the service area. She preferred open spaces.

“Let’s go here,” she said, looking around.

She wanted to put Lin Jiayao down and wash the bloodstains from her body, but there was nowhere for her sister to sit.

She couldn’t just let her sit on the concrete.

She would wash up after the girls were done, standing beside the jeep while Lin Jiayao sat in the passenger seat.

Her sister seemed to have become more clingy.

So, from now on, her usually aloof sister would become more and more attached to her?

A smile played on her lips. Lin Jiayao, looking up, caught that smile.

“What are you smiling about?” she asked, her brow furrowing, narrowing her eyes at her sister.

Lin Xiwan, seeing her sister’s almost accusatory gaze, realized her expression was inappropriate.

The two little girls were still there, and her smiling like that… it did look a bit… creepy.

But she hadn’t been thinking anything inappropriate! She’d only been thinking about her sister!

“Why are you looking at me like that…” Lin Xiwan gently bumped her forehead against her sister’s. “I think you’re misunderstanding something.”

“What were you thinking about? Smiling like that?” Lin Jiayao narrowed her eyes, suspicion evident in her voice.

She was younger; her sister would sometimes look at her and smile like that. These two girls were even younger, and her sister had that same smile.

Could it be… that her sister…

Seeing her sister’s increasingly strange expression, Lin Xiwan knew she had been misunderstood.

“I wasn’t thinking anything weird, I swear,” she said quickly, telling the truth. “I was thinking about you, nothing else.”

In situations like this, honesty was the best policy.

She didn’t want her sister, who was already becoming more clingy, to look at her with disgust.

    That would break her heart.

Lin Jiayao, hearing this, was momentarily stunned.

    Sister… was thinking about her?

She hadn’t expected that. She was speechless, frozen.

Only after being placed back in the passenger seat did she recover, watching as her sister, after putting down the water bottles, started to remove her clothes.

    What… did Sister mean…?

The two little girls, huddled together in the back, had fallen asleep. The highway service area was quiet, no insects chirping, only the rustling of her sister’s clothes.

    What… had she meant?

Lin Xiwan’s simple answer had confused her. Had something changed? Her sister’s attitude, or her own? She couldn’t understand her sister’s words anymore.

They had always been so close, so in sync, sharing everything.

Her sister had finished undressing, her clothes placed on the car roof, and was now cleaning the bloodstains from her body with the purified water.

Careful not to waste any, her movements were slow and deliberate.

In the silence, Lin Jiayao decided to ask directly.

“Sister.” Lin Jiayao lowered her head, her left hand resting on the soft seat, her right hand fiddling with the hem of her t-shirt.

“What is it?” Lin Xiwan asked, still cleaning her neck.

“Do you… like me?” Lin Jiayao asked, looking at her fingers, her voice casual.

“Of course I like you,” Lin Xiwan replied without hesitation, pouring water on her neck and rinsing away the blood. “You’re my little sister. Who else would I like?”

Her tone was so matter-of-fact, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

“Why are you asking?” She rinsed her chest, looking curiously at her strangely behaving sister.

“Nothing, just… curious,” Lin Jiayao said, glancing at her sister and then leaning back against the seat, closing her eyes.

Asking such a question had made her face feel slightly warm, though she didn’t think she was blushing.

But her sister’s answer had relieved her greatly.

Her sister’s expression and tone had been completely normal, as if liking her was the most natural thing in the world.

This meant she still saw her as her little sister, no strange, complicated feelings involved.

Closing her eyes, Lin Jiayao activated Bone Spike Lurker, but then, she heard her sister approaching.

She opened her eyes and felt a wet hand grab her face, pinching her cheeks painfully.

“Smartass, huh?” Lin Xiwan said, squeezing her sister’s face. “No more smartass remarks! Understand? Forget everything those Voodoo Cult people said!”

Lin Xiwan’s grip tightened. She couldn’t bear hearing those crude words from her innocent sister’s mouth.

Her adorable sister must have picked up those vulgar expressions from the Voodoo Cult members.

Tears welled up in Lin Jiayao’s eyes from the pain. “Ow, ow, ow… I understand, I won’t say them anymore…”

Hearing her sister’s promise, Lin Xiwan released her grip and sighed in relief.

As the saying went, an older brother was like a father.

She was the older sister; she was like a mother. Even in the apocalypse, education was important.

She didn’t want her sweet, innocent sister to become foul-mouthed and twisted by the apocalypse, joining a group like the Voodoo Cult.

It was easy to lose your moral compass in this world.

Lin Xiwan had received nine years of compulsory education and had even gone to university; her moral foundation was solid.

But before the apocalypse, her sister had been only ten, still in elementary school, barely educated.

Although she was sixteen now, in Lin Xiwan’s eyes, she was still that little girl who clung to her leg.

And… although always getting perfect scores and surprisingly mature for her age, an elementary school student was still an elementary school student.

If she didn’t guide her sister now, she might become twisted, even start admiring a group like the Voodoo Cult.

Human nature was inherently flawed. In the apocalypse, without the constraints of morality and law, evil flourished, and the Voodoo Cult was just one of its most prominent manifestations.

That’s why she’d reacted so strongly to her sister repeating those vulgar phrases.

Releasing her grip, Lin Xiwan looked at her sister’s reddened cheeks and felt both a pang of concern and amusement.

Heartbreak for hurting her sister’s beautiful face, amusement at her pouting expression, which looked exactly like a meme from before the apocalypse, a mother scolding her daughter.

After using a full bottle of water to scrub away the dried blood and another to rinse, Lin Xiwan held out the bottle to her sister.

She needed help washing her hair, especially the bloodstained parts.

If she did it herself, even two bottles wouldn’t be enough.

Lin Jiayao took the half-full bottle, cupped her sister’s wavy black hair in her hands, poured a little water, and gently washed it.

It took about ten minutes to clean the bloodstains before the water ran out.

At least the water dripping from her sister’s hair was no longer red.

Lin Xiwan wrung out her hair, tossed it back, and said, “I’ll go get some clothes from the trunk,” heading towards the back of the car.

Lin Jiayao watched her sister’s retreating figure, her gaze fixed on her, as if afraid she would be snatched away by another monstrous bird.

When Lin Xiwan returned, she was carrying another set of clothes.

“Your clothes are also stained with blood. Change,” she said.

    “Okay,” Lin Jiayao nodded.

She didn’t want to sleep in bloodstained clothes either. They had plenty of clothes now; changing wouldn’t hurt.

Lin Xiwan moved her sister’s legs out of the car, undressed her, and then put on the new clothes.

A sports bra? Unusual, but it fit perfectly.

Then panties, everything normal so far.

Then, as Lin Xiwan was putting on a black pleated skirt, Lin Jiayao finally questioned her.

    “Why a skirt?”

She didn’t dislike skirts, in fact, she liked them very much.

But skirts meant exposed legs, and exposed legs… attracted unwanted attention. So, she’d always worn pants.

She didn’t realize that her pretty face and long, immobile legs were already more than enough to attract that kind of attention.

“There weren’t any other pants,” Lin Xiwan lied smoothly, helping her sister into the skirt. Then she took out a pair of black over-the-knee stockings.

“Why stockings?” Lin Jiayao blinked, confused, but unable to resist.

“To keep your legs warm,” Lin Xiwan said with conviction.

It sounded reasonable; Lin Jiayao couldn’t argue with that.

After putting on a white t-shirt, Lin Xiwan took a few steps back, looking at her sister, nodding and then shaking her head.

“Sigh… so pretty, too bad it’s not a sailor uniform…” she said with a sigh.

If it weren’t for the apocalypse, her sister would be in high school now, old enough for a school uniform.

Sadly, there was no chance of seeing her in one now, only this makeshift version.

“Mwah~” Admiring her handiwork, Lin Xiwan kissed her sister’s cheek, placed her legs back inside the car, and closed the door.

Then, taking the dirty clothes from the roof, she wiped the bloodstains from the seat and climbed in.

“Let’s see if there are any camps nearby… We can go there tomorrow during the day to exchange supplies and maybe even get the car fixed…” She muttered, turning on the radio and adjusting the frequency.

“I’m going to take a nap,” Lin Jiayao said, wiping the drool from her cheek, leaning back, and closing her eyes.

She felt mentally recovered enough to log into Mask and search for the materials needed to build the [Medical Station] and [Workbench].

If she’d had the Medical Station when her sister was injured, things might have been different.

Perhaps the system’s medical supplies would have some sort of miraculous healing properties.

While Lin Jiayao closed her eyes, Lin Xiwan continued fiddling with the radio.

    “Zzz… zzz…”

    “Click—”

“Woohoo! Zzz… Voodoo Cult is in the house… This is your favorite Voodoo Music Channel…”

    “Click—”

“Zzz… This is the Qingzhou University Camp in Qingzhou City…”

    “Click—”

    “Hmm?”

    “Click—”

“Zzz… We have a filtered artificial lake, the underground channels are secured with protective barriers and filters, ample water supply…”

“With the lake and underground river, we’ve built reservoirs for aquaculture… zzz… using the lake water for irrigation…”

“We welcome all Awakened and ordinary people… zzz… as long as you’re willing to contribute… the camp will always welcome you… zzz…”

“Location… Tianzhou District, Qingzhou Avenue… Password: ‘The world feels small when friends are near’…”

Lin Xiwan’s eyes widened as she listened.

Due to fear of the Voodoo Cult, besides Survivor’s Light, most radio stations didn’t broadcast at high power.

Advertising a thriving camp would only attract the Voodoo Cult.

Most broadcasts only reached within the city limits, or at most, to neighboring cities. That’s why she hadn’t heard this broadcast in Yangzhou City.

Qingzhou City was beyond Fuzhou City.

The camp in Qingzhou City… they had aquaculture, using the artificial lake connected to an underground river?

    They were self-sufficient?

It sounded like an apocalyptic utopia.

Lin Xiwan memorized the location, planning to go there tomorrow for supplies and car repairs.

As a C-rank Awakened now, she wasn’t afraid of being attacked or betrayed; she was no longer as wary of other camps.

If it seemed safe, they could even stay there permanently.

Lin Xiwan placed the car keys on the center console, climbed over the steering wheel, and lay down on her sister’s lap, resting her head on her stocking-covered thighs.

Feeling the soft, smooth texture of her sister’s legs against her cheek, she inhaled deeply, closing her eyes.

Resting on such beautiful, fragrant legs, even the most weary soul would find peace.

And she could touch them as much as she wanted without disturbing her sister’s sleep.

Lin Xiwan had to stay awake tonight; she would just rest here, listening for any unusual sounds.

Meanwhile, Lin Jiayao, oblivious to her sister’s actions, was already logged into Mask.

She slowly opened her eyes, feeling a sense of invigorating clarity.

Stretching her limbs, she opened her mouth slightly, a series of unnerving clicks emanating from within.

Beneath her was the mangled corpse of an Armored zombie, riddled with holes from her bone spikes.

She had forgotten to detach Mask’s head before evolving.

    “Thud—”

She pulled out the thick bone spikes, stood up, supported by her bone legs, and her head almost brushed the ceiling of the clothing store.

Countless three-meter-long, jointed bone spikes floated around her, defying gravity, and six thick, smooth bone spikes supported her grotesque, half-skull as she crawled out of the store.

    「Extraction Time 5:59:51」
    【Extraction Point: 22.6km】

The extraction point was far, and the time allotted was generous… she could search for a pharmacy, a hospital, or a hardware store.

The system didn’t specify what kind of medicine she needed. A handful of prenatal vitamins should suffice.

Who would need those in the apocalypse, anyway?

Chapter 83: Do You Like Me? Part 1

    “Chirp—”

After Lin Xiwan pulverized the giant Corpse Bird with her fists, the surrounding birds, as if released from some invisible constraint, became agitated.

Amidst the rain of blood and gore, Lin Xiwan saw two blood crystal stones slowly materializing in the air.

Several others, propelled by the force of the explosion, landed further away, hidden in the tall grass.

Lin Xiwan leaped, catching the two crystals mid-air, and then, without a second glance at the others, ran towards the jeep.

She wouldn’t risk her life for mere material possessions. She knew life was precious; greed could be fatal.

Her sister was her priority; blood crystals were secondary.

Large birds were taking flight from the tall grass, their screeches filling the air.

Reaching the jeep, Lin Xiwan tossed the two blood crystals inside, climbed onto the hood, and then, through the shattered windshield, slipped into the driver’s seat.

Her sister was already there, rifle aimed, ready. Lin Xiwan quickly inserted the key and started the engine.

    “Whirr—”

The moment the engine roared to life, she shifted into reverse and slammed on the gas.

She had driven straight into this field from the highway; reversing in a straight line would take them back.

Fortunately, there weren’t any bird corpses blocking their path.

    “Screech—”

After reversing about two hundred meters, Lin Xiwan spun the steering wheel, turning the jeep 180 degrees, shifted gears, and accelerated.

    “Roar—”

The engine howled. Thankfully, the mechanic at the military base camp had done a good job; the modified vehicles were sturdy.

The tall grass obscured her vision, but the screeches behind them were getting closer. There was no time to hesitate; she had to go, now.

    “Thump—”

A sudden jolt as the jeep hit something, and then their field of vision widened.

They had smashed through the guardrail and were back on the highway.

But the impact had stalled the engine; Lin Xiwan had to restart it.

Thankfully, it roared back to life.

Lin Jiayao couldn’t do much to help.

The trunk was packed with supplies, the windows barred; she couldn’t reach out to shoot.

Now she regretted not choosing [Hive Skin]. Even if she’d placed the black holes somewhere inconspicuous, like her throat, at least she would have a ranged attack.

And if it were on her throat, no one would see it.

    Just a little… unsettling, perhaps.

She had made up her mind: if there weren’t any better ranged options next time, she would choose Hive Skin without hesitation.

    “Screech—”
    “Thump—”

A Corpse Bird landed on the roof, its claws piercing the metal.

The jeep slowed dramatically, almost tilting upwards.

Lin Jiayao turned and fired three shots at the roof.

    “Bang, bang, bang—”

Three more holes in the already riddled roof. The bird’s claws remained, but it was dead.

Perhaps because of the extra weight, the jeep wouldn’t accelerate.

The screeches behind them grew louder. “Sister, can you open the roof?” Lin Jiayao shouted, moving closer to the ammunition box.

Lin Xiwan, seeing the straight stretch of road ahead, pressed the accelerator and, while steering with one hand, reached up and grabbed the two handles on the roof.

With a mighty pull, she ripped off the metal sheet like it was paper, the bird’s claws coming loose, its body tumbling onto the highway.

“You two, hand me the magazines, help me load the bullets.” Lin Jiayao gave the two little girls a command, gripped the edge of the open roof, and looked at her sister. “Sister, can you lift me up with one hand?”

Lin Xiwan instantly understood. Steering with her left hand, she quickly reached down with her right, grabbed Lin Jiayao’s bottom, and lifted her up.

Lin Jiayao, held aloft, adjusted her position, one side of her bottom resting on the headrest of the passenger seat, the other supported by her sister’s hand.

Being held up like that was uncomfortable and would affect her aim.

With half of her body outside the jeep, her left elbow braced against the edge of the opening in the roof, securing her position, Lin Jiayao aimed at the approaching flock of birds and opened fire.

Meanwhile, the two little girls, following her instructions, busied themselves inside the car.

One held two magazines, ready to hand them to Lin Jiayao whenever she reached for them, picking up the empty ones she discarded.

The other opened a box of ammunition, carefully loading the empty magazines, one bullet at a time.

“Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang—”

After another burst, seeing the number of birds hadn’t decreased, Lin Jiayao’s heart sank.

This isn’t working; I can’t get rid of them… there are too many…

Even if they lined up for her sister to punch them one by one, it would take too long, let alone them attacking en masse.

    “Hoo…”
    “Click—”

Lin Jiayao discarded the empty magazine, took a full one from the little girl, and reloaded, changing her tactics.

If she couldn’t eliminate them all… then she would make them fight each other.

Inside the car, she hadn’t been able to move quickly or deploy her insects to spread the pheromones.

But now, on a moving vehicle, releasing pheromones was like spraying poison from a moving vehicle. Any bird diving towards them would be affected before it could attack.

Lin Jiayao took a deep breath.

As she exhaled, pheromones filled the air, waiting for their receptors to be triggered.

With the cessation of gunfire, three Corpse Birds simultaneously dove towards the jeep.

“Yao? Is your gun jammed, Yao?”

Approaching a curve and the entrance to a highway tunnel, Lin Xiwan couldn’t look back, only asking when she heard the gunfire stop.

    Lin Jiayao couldn’t reply.

Releasing a large amount of pheromones had drained her mental and physical strength. Whenever she used these abilities, she could feel her energy rapidly depleting.

Those Hive Zombies had countless brains to boost their mental strength; she only had one.

    “Screech—”

The three diving Corpse Birds suddenly lost control mid-flight, as if their minds had been momentarily disrupted.

They tumbled onto the highway, struggled to their feet, shrieked, flapped their wings, and then flew back towards the flock behind them.

The flock descended into chaos. And at that moment, Lin Jiayao’s vision went dark as the jeep entered the tunnel.

Inside the tunnel, Lin Xiwan slowed down.

It was pitch black; she didn’t want to crash into an abandoned vehicle.

Extending her right arm between her sister’s legs, she lifted her and placed her on her lap.

“Are you okay?” She adjusted Lin Jiayao into a comfortable position and hugged her, her voice filled with concern.

The tunnel was quiet, the bird screeches now muffled, only the engine’s roar echoing.

    They seemed to have escaped.

    “Mm…”

Mentally and physically exhausted, the wind rushing through the missing car door and window, Lin Jiayao could barely keep her eyes open.

She leaned against her sister, her grip loosening on the rifle, fighting to stay conscious.

She knew the birds wouldn’t follow. The pheromones she had released would keep them occupied.

She had given the pheromones a simple command: kill each other.

Any Corpse Bird that encountered the pheromones would turn on its own kind.

The ensuing carnage, fueled by bloodlust and the scent of blood crystals, would draw them all in, a gruesome free-for-all.

This might create another mutated Corpse Bird, but it wouldn’t be her problem; they would be long gone by then, never to return.

“Yao… just hold on a little longer, there’s a service area up ahead, almost there…” Lin Xiwan rested her chin on her sister’s head, her voice a soft reassurance against the roar of the engine and the wind.

Thinking her sister was injured, she gently felt her body, searching for wounds.

But finding none, she accelerated as they emerged from the tunnel.

Lin Jiayao, held in her sister’s embrace, let her sister touch and examine her, unable to speak.

The wind rushing through the broken windshield and window was too loud.

And, weakened, her voice was soft; the wind drowned out her words.

Since it was too dark to see, her sister could only check for injuries by touch.

She knew her sister was just worried, so she didn’t stop her.

Chapter 82: Corpse Birds of the Wasteland (2)

Lost in thought, Lin Jiayao tapped on the window, waiting.

But then she realized something was wrong.

Hadn’t her sister been gone for too long?

    Almost five minutes?

    Had something happened?

Worried, she quickly placed her hand on the window and activated Bone Spike Lurker.

Within a 150-meter radius, she only heard the rustling of the tall yellow grass in the wind.

    Even the heartbeats, only three.

    Where was her sister?

Bone Spike Lurker’s range was 150 meters.

Where had she gone? Why was she outside that range?

A 3D map of the surrounding terrain formed in Lin Jiayao’s mind. She searched for any trace of her sister.

But besides the flattened grass where her sister had relieved herself, there was nothing.

Just as she was about to drive towards her sister’s last known location, she heard a screech from the sky.

    “Screech—”

Followed by a heavy thud on the jeep’s roof.

    “Thump—”

The entire vehicle shook, the roof dented inwards. Lin Jiayao’s Bone Spike Lurker finally registered what was happening above.

    It was her sister!

And… a massive bird, its wingspan exceeding four meters, its feathers ruffled and matted.

Its face was a grotesque tumor, dripping viscous fluid, which pulsed and opened like a flower, revealing rows of sharp teeth and a gaping maw.

Its claws were sunk deep into her sister’s waist, blood flowing freely as she struggled.

Several boxes of bread on the roof were crushed, a bloody mess.

    “Haaa—”

Lin Xiwan, blood dripping from her mouth, gripped the monstrous bird’s head and slammed its tumor-like face against the roof.

    “Screech—”

The bird shrieked in pain, its powerful wings creating a gust of wind that flattened the surrounding grass as it tried to lift off, carrying Lin Xiwan with it.

In a split second, Lin Jiayao chambered a round in her rifle and flung open the car door.

    “Thump—”

She tumbled out onto the grass, her back flattening a patch of weeds.

Aiming at the monstrous bird, now lifting into the air, she shouted, “Sister! Let go!”

Hearing her sister’s shout, Lin Xiwan released her grip. As the bird raised its head, Lin Jiayao fired.

    “Bang, bang—Bang, bang, bang, bang—”

The first two shots didn’t stop the bird’s struggle.

Without hesitation, she fired four more. Six bullets embedded themselves in the bird’s tumor-like head, the gunshots echoing through the wilderness.

There wasn’t time to use pheromones to try and control it; she had to protect her sister.

Finally, without even a cry, the bird’s wings stilled, and it collapsed onto the roof, its massive body crushing Lin Xiwan.

    “Haa…”

Lin Xiwan pushed the corpse off, pulled the claws from her waist, and kicked the body off the roof.

The roof was now a bloody mess; she couldn’t tell which blood was hers and which belonged to the bird.

    “Cough, cough—”

She coughed up blood, then, with a tremendous effort, rolled off the roof and onto the ground.

As she crawled towards the car door, Lin Jiayao had already holstered her rifle and was scrambling into the back, towards the medical supplies.

She grabbed a first aid kit and returned to the passenger seat.

    “Rip—”

She tore open the kit: a vacuum-sealed pack of bandages, medical scissors, a stapler with the Voodoo Cult’s logo, several tourniquets of varying sizes, a bottle of antiseptic spray, liquid bandages, a bottle of Yunnan Baiyao, and a syringe filled with what looked like adrenaline.

It seemed like a makeshift kit assembled from whatever was available, lacking many of the items found in a standard first aid kit.

But there was no time to search for more. Her sister, breathing heavily, had managed to climb into the driver’s seat.

After closing the door with a grunt, she leaned back, panting.

With every tremor, blood seeped from her blood-soaked clothes.

Lin Jiayao didn’t waste any time. She ripped open her sister’s shirt with the medical scissors.

Her sister’s skin, completely covered in blood, made it impossible to see the wounds clearly.

But her sister, surprisingly conscious despite her injuries, took some tissues and started wiping the blood.

    “Let me do it.”

Lin Xiwan took the first aid kit, sprayed antiseptic around the wounds, and then, using the stapler, began closing them.

    “Click—”
    “Click—”

Each click of the stapler made Lin Jiayao’s heart clench.

But in contrast to Lin Jiayao’s anxiety, Lin Xiwan was remarkably calm.

After treating the wounds, applying Yunnan Baiyao, and bandaging them, she leaned back against the seat and sighed softly.

She knew the claws had pierced her internal organs; there was no hope of natural healing.

And there was no way to perform surgery in the apocalypse. She was as good as dead.

    “Screech—”

Before she could even finish bandaging, another screech from above… There was more than one of these monstrous birds.

    “Thump—”

The bird slammed into the roof, its claws piercing the metal, the two little girls, now awake, screaming in terror.

    “Yao…”

    Lin Xiwan’s voice trembled.

She hadn’t expected to be attacked on her way back to the car, a mere ten meters. The bird hadn’t even made a sound until she’d punched it.

But now, it was too late.

If this continued, they would all die.

    “Bang, bang, bang, bang—”

Four gunshots from inside the car, and then silence. The bird fell heavily from the roof.

“What happened, Sister…?” Lin Jiayao’s voice was close to tears. Although her sister had acted calmly, she knew how serious her injuries were.

“Can you… protect us… until I wake up?” Lin Xiwan reached into the back and pulled out a bag of magazines, placing it in front of Lin Jiayao.

As she moved, a few staples came loose, and blood flowed again.

Without waiting for an answer, Lin Xiwan took two blood crystals from her waist pouch and crushed them in her hands.

    “Crack—”

“Sister… is going to sleep for a while.”

    She mumbled.

The blood crystal fragments, instead of scattering, clung to her hands and then, like butter melting on a hot surface, seeped into her skin.

More fragments moved towards her wounds.

Her veins glowed with a red light, spreading from her hands towards her heart.

The process seemed incredibly painful; she gritted her teeth, leaned back against the seat, and lost consciousness.

    “Bang, bang—”

Lin Jiayao quickly shot two birds that were diving towards the windshield.

Their momentum carried their bodies into the glass, shattering it.

    “Shhh—”

Her bone spikes pushed the bird corpses aside, and she saw more of the tumor-headed monstrosities rising from the grass under the moonlight.

The Corpse Birds, having hidden in the grass during the day, were now awake.

They had unknowingly entered a Corpse Bird nesting ground, and, ironically, the area within 150 meters of where Lin Xiwan had parked had been clear.

Lin Jiayao gripped her rifle, looking at the circling birds.

She hadn’t encountered any airborne zombies before, except for insects.

Now, facing them, she realized how limited her aerial combat capabilities were.

Even releasing pheromones was too slow; their claws would reach her before the pheromones took effect.

She opened the bag of magazines, grabbed a full one, and reloaded.

    “Cough, cough—”

Her sister coughed, snapping her attention back.

Lin Xiwan’s shirt was torn open, revealing the spreading red veins of blood crystals.

The veins extended from her hands towards her heart, stopping at her armpits.

    Not enough blood crystals.

Lin Jiayao quickly took a blood crystal from the warehouse, held it near her sister’s hand, and tried to crush it, mimicking her sister.

But she wasn’t strong enough. She placed the crystal against her sister’s shoulder.

    “Crack—”

The blood crystal shattered on its own, its contents seeping into her sister’s skin.

And the red lines on her right arm finally reached her heart.

    “Thump—”

A powerful heartbeat, audible even to Lin Jiayao, echoed from her sister’s chest.

The blood-red glow of the blood crystals spread outwards from her heart, through her veins, reaching every part of her body in a second.

    The evolution had begun.

Shooting from inside the car would limit her field of vision and risk injuring her sister.

Lin Jiayao’s bone spikes extended, hooked onto the bag of magazines, and then, carrying her, climbed out of the car through the broken windshield and onto the roof.

Sitting on the roof, her back against a crushed box of bread, she aimed at the diving Corpse Birds.

    “Bang, bang, bang—”
    “Thud—”

She fired rapidly, impaling any that got too close with her bone spikes.

She even used pheromones to control some of the injured birds, their broken bodies now fighting alongside her.

For ten minutes, she repeated the same actions: shoot, reload, impale. Her earlier practice in the Training Grounds, honing her skills against moving targets, proved invaluable; otherwise, she would have been torn apart.

As the number of corpses around her grew, the metallic scent of blood intensifying, an earsplitting screech echoed through the wilderness.

    “SHRIEK—”

Hearing the piercing cry, Lin Jiayao’s breath caught in her throat.

All the Corpse Birds in the sky descended, disappearing into the tall grass.

    Were they… hiding?

    As if afraid of something.

    “Thump—”
    “Thump—”

Heavy footsteps, approaching rapidly, entering the 150-meter range of her Bone Spike Lurker.

    This… this size… it couldn’t be a bird…

    Something this heavy couldn’t fly.

As the figure emerged from the darkness, Lin Jiayao’s jaw dropped.

    A massive, four-meter-wide tumor, perched atop a featherless, pustule-covered bird’s body.

The grotesque tumor and the smaller, featherless bird body were a disturbing contrast.

Three gaping maws opened on the tumor, revealing long, curved red teeth, like the buds of a spider lily.

    “SHRIEK—”

After screeching at the sky, the monstrous head slowly lowered, its gaze fixing on Lin Jiayao.

No, not on Lin Jiayao, but on Lin Xiwan inside the car.

As if Lin Xiwan, her body glowing with blood crystal light, was some sort of delicacy.

    “Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang—”

A burst of gunfire, hitting the monstrous bird’s tumor, small bloody spots appearing on its surface.

    “Shit…”

Lin Jiayao cursed, inserting her last magazine.

She finally understood why the Voodoo Cult carried RPGs; she wished she had one now.

A rifle’s power was insignificant against such a massive monster.

If this last magazine didn’t work, she would have to resort to infecting it with spores.

Hopefully, she would retain her sanity after experiencing the monster’s five years of accumulated human memories.

Just as she raised her rifle to fire again, her Bone Spike Lurker detected a sound from inside the car.

    Her sister?

She quickly retracted her bone spikes. Before she could hear clearly what was happening, a curved bone spike whistled through the air towards her.

It was too fast to dodge!

    “Thump—”

A loud crash as the bone spike pierced the jeep’s roof. A hand, glowing with blood crystal light, reached out from the hole and caught the bone spike before it could reach Lin Jiayao’s chest.

    “Crack—”

With a squeeze, the bone spike shattered.

Lin Jiayao stared at the broken spike, her heart pounding.

She’d known the monstrous bird had bone-related evolutions, but she hadn’t expected a ranged attack.

No wonder the other birds had been so afraid of it.

    “Boom—”

The driver’s side door of the jeep was kicked open.

    A familiar figure emerged.

Lin Xiwan, clad only in her black underwear.

Her body, covered in blood, like crimson war paint, showed no signs of her previous injuries.

Her muscles hadn’t changed much, but the veins beneath her skin pulsed with a blood crystal glow.

Lin Xiwan slowly raised her head, her blood-red eyes fixed on her sister, and smiled.

    “You’ve worked hard.”

    “Whoosh—”

Another bone spike, this time aimed at Lin Xiwan. But without even looking, she shifted slightly, dodging it.

The heavy footsteps of the monster approached.

“Get back in the car,” she said, ignoring the approaching monster, and extended her arms towards her sister.

Lin Jiayao, seeing the monster closing in, didn’t hesitate. She jumped into her sister’s arms.

Lin Xiwan caught her, placed her in the driver’s seat, and, as always, kissed her forehead.

    “Wait for me.”

Then, she turned towards the monster, now less than ten meters away, and picked up the jeep door from the ground.

Her muscles coiled, feeling the surge of new power coursing through her veins, a smile playing on her lips.

She felt powerful enough to destroy anything.

And the giant, featherless Corpse Bird was her first target.

She lunged forward, leaped into the air, and hurled the car door like a discus.

As the monster raised its wings to block, she landed on its wing, her fist, after the deflected door, slamming into the bone beneath the flesh.

    Nothing happened?

    “Thump—”

A powerful heartbeat, a flash of crimson light from her heart, surging through her veins and into her fist.

The light seemed to penetrate her skin, instantly covering the bird’s wing with a network of blood-red cracks.

    “Boom—”

A full second after her punch landed, the sound of the impact finally reached her ears.

The entire wing, even the parts she hadn’t hit, shattered.

    “Screech—”

The monster shrieked, as if in unimaginable pain.

But Lin Xiwan showed no mercy.

Landing, she leaped again, her fists a blur, raining blows on the monster’s tumor-like head.

    “Thump, thump, thump, thump, thump—”

More than twenty punches in two seconds, the monster’s head cracking like glass, blood-red lines appearing on its surface.

    “Boom—”

The monstrous head exploded in a shower of gore, like a watermelon hitting concrete.

  • Sickly Girl Doesn’t Die in Zombie Simulator 81

Chapter 81: Corpse Birds of the Wasteland

    “Whirr—”

A black jeep sped down the highway in the fading light.

Fuzhou City was now barely visible in the rearview mirror. As they moved further inland, the rain had stopped, even the light drizzle had ceased.

Finally free from the incessant drumming of rain, the occupants of the jeep relaxed slightly.

Four people were crammed inside the vehicle.

Lin Xiwan drove, Lin Jiayao sat in the passenger seat, eyes closed, resting, and the two little girls sat in the small space behind the front seats, perched on a military equipment box.

The jeep’s trunk was packed with supplies.

A row of metal jerrycans lined one side, topped with lighter items like clean clothes, towels, lighters, and soap.

All Voodoo Cult goods, quality unknown, but usable.

The rest of the space was filled with canned food, bottled water, medical supplies, and even a few boxes of puffed bread, seemingly produced within the Voodoo Cult.

The Voodoo Cult was even producing bread now; their level of self-sufficiency rivaled that of Survivor’s Light.

At least, in Lin Jiayao’s memory, Survivor’s Light rarely had items like soap, perhaps because the raw materials were used for more essential goods.

Although the puffed bread took up more space than canned food and had a shorter shelf life, both sisters had agreed to bring it.

After so long on a diet of salty, strange-tasting canned food, bread was a welcome change.

Especially luncheon meat sandwiches, though not quite pre-apocalypse burgers, a rare delicacy in this world.

Besides the supplies crammed inside, several large boxes of bread were tied to the roof, not enough to overload the vehicle.

This was enough food for the two sisters for at least three months, or two months including the two little girls; children didn’t eat much.

Two months should be enough time to find a new camp.

The jeep had a radio, but Lin Xiwan didn’t turn it on to search for nearby camps.

She knew Fuzhou City would be swept by the Voodoo Cult, so nearby camps were too dangerous.

Although they’d been lucky enough to eliminate a small Voodoo Cult detachment, Lin Xiwan knew it was mostly due to luck.

Against a well-equipped Voodoo Cult force led by an Awakened, they had no chance.

    Avoidance was the best strategy.

And she needed to find a safe place to try enhancing herself with blood crystals.

She was just one step away from a breakthrough.

Evolving to C-rank would significantly improve their chances of survival.

At least then she would be able to fight a small Voodoo Cult detachment on equal footing.

While driving, Lin Xiwan kept an eye out for suitable resting spots.

Places like roadside villages and highway service areas were too conspicuous, too likely to attract unwanted attention.

She needed a secluded spot, preferably a field with tall grass for concealment, to spend the night.

    Driving was monotonous and tiring.

And there was no one to talk to. The two little girls sat quietly in the back, and her sister, clutching the rifle, rested with her eyes closed, only occasionally opening them to ask where they were.

She didn’t want to disturb her sister’s rest, so she drove in silence.

Unlike Lin Xiwan, Lin Jiayao was busy in the Training Grounds.

As soon as they were in the car, she’d spent ten blood crystals to build it, despite the cost.

The Training Grounds, once built, was just a floating, luminous blue orb, a scientifically improbable sight.

But entering the orb transported her to a vast, open space.

Here, she could simulate any zombie she had logged into and any firearm she had encountered.

She could even create simulations of any zombie she had seen, including the “giant corn cob” monster.

And she could choose any weapon or any logged-in zombie, even her main body, to fight these simulated enemies.

No injuries, no fatigue, unlimited ammunition, unlimited stamina; she could practice endlessly.

It was the perfect training environment.

Perhaps, if a future zombie encountered a powerful opponent, she could study its movements and weaknesses in the Training Grounds and then exploit them in the next encounter.

The only downside was that her legs remained immobile in the simulation, just like her real body.

Currently, in the Training Grounds, Lin Jiayao held a Type 95 rifle, aiming at four approaching Sprinters.

“Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang—”

A burst of automatic fire. Headshots, one after another, the Sprinters dissolving into light particles.

Four more Sprinters appeared, running towards her in an S-shaped pattern.

Lin Jiayao, sitting in the illusory wheelchair, remained calm; there was no danger here.

    “Bang—Bang—Bang—Bang—”

Four crisp shots. Three Sprinters fell, but one lunged towards her.

    “Thud—”

A bone spike erupted from the back of her neck, impaling the Sprinter’s head. Its body dissolved into light before it could reach her.

Even without fear or adrenaline, I can still miss shots…

If this happened in reality, either she or her sister would be injured.

Marksmanship practice… a long road ahead… but with unlimited ammunition, even an idiot could become a sharpshooter.

Perhaps because she’d just thought of her sister, the simulated enemies changed.

The four Sprinters were replaced by a single figure: her sister.

Although she knew it was a simulation, the image was so realistic, down to the pores of her skin, that Lin Jiayao was momentarily stunned.

    It was… too lifelike.

Even the angry expression was perfect.

While she was distracted, the simulated Lin Xiwan bent her knees and then, faster than even a Sprinter, lunged towards her.

    So fast—!

Even in a simulation, Lin Jiayao couldn’t bring herself to shoot her sister. She quickly issued a “stop” command.

Even if she was “killed,” it didn’t matter; she would respawn here, and with her pain receptors set to 0%, she wouldn’t feel anything.

Fortunately, the system registered her command just in time.

Her sister, now right in front of her, her fist about to connect, the force of the punch even ruffling Lin Jiayao’s hair, froze mid-swing.

Lin Jiayao breathed a sigh of relief, looking at the frozen image of her sister.

Just as she was about to remove the simulation and replace it with zombies, she, on a whim, reached out and pinched her sister’s cheek, mimicking her sister’s usual gesture.

    No sensation…

If she dared to do this in real life, her sister would retaliate tenfold.

Then she remembered she had disabled her sense of touch in the simulation.

She set it to 100% and pinched her sister’s cheek again.

Soft, smooth, exactly like her real sister’s.

As expected of the system; the simulation was incredibly realistic.

“Yao? Yao? Wake up, time for dinner. Don’t be lazy—”

The last vestiges of twilight had faded, and darkness had fallen over southern China.

Only a small yellow lamp illuminated the interior of the jeep, allowing Lin Xiwan to see her sister’s face.

Her sister’s cheeks were slightly flushed, but her forehead wasn’t hot… perhaps she was having a pleasant dream.

    “Yao—”

Lin Xiwan leaned close and whispered, finally seeing her sister’s eyelashes flutter.

Lin Jiayao’s eyes slowly opened, unfocused, still sleepy.

There was even a little drool on the corner of her mouth.

Seeing her usually composed sister looking so adorable and disoriented after waking up, Lin Xiwan couldn’t help but smile.

This is what life is about!

She reached out to wipe the drool from her sister’s lips.

But as her finger approached, Lin Jiayao, still half-asleep, instinctively opened her mouth and sucked on her sister’s finger.

    “What are you doing—?”

Feeling her finger enveloped by her sister’s warm mouth, Lin Xiwan chuckled, pulled it out, and wiped Lin Jiayao’s mouth with the back of her hand.

Lin Jiayao’s eyes finally focused, and she looked at Lin Xiwan.

“Hungry from your dreams, huh?” Lin Xiwan smiled, took a loaf of sweet-smelling bread from the dashboard, tore open the package, and held it to her sister’s lips. “Open wide, ah—”

After Lin Jiayao took a bite, Lin Xiwan let her eat on her own.

She opened another package of bread, wiped her hand on it, and then took a bite herself.

They were sisters; she wouldn’t mind her sister’s drool.

Lin Jiayao, now fully awake, held the bread in her hand and chewed, feeling her body slowly regaining control.

To ensure constant combat readiness in the apocalypse, she had set her pain receptors to 120% for the training sessions.

Fighting with heightened pain sensitivity was a completely different experience. The fear of pain had forced her to change her tactics.

Although it was agonizing, she noticed her mental strength had increased slightly after the intense battles, likely due to increased pain tolerance.

But 120% was too much; next time, she would set it back to 100% and gradually adjust.

The Training Grounds were for simulating extreme situations, preparing her for the real thing, as long as she didn’t faint.

Her senses back to normal, Lin Jiayao chewed the sweet bread and looked around.

The jeep was hidden in a field of tall, yellow grass.

And the two little girls in the back seemed to be asleep.

“They ate and then fell asleep. Kids, you know, they get sleepy easily,” Lin Xiwan explained, seeing her sister looking at them.

“Mm…” Lin Jiayao opened a bottle of water, swallowed the bread with a large gulp, and then looked at her sister, blinking.

Although she hadn’t said anything, her sister seemed to understand, quickly finishing her bread and wiping the crumbs from her hands.

Lin Xiwan knew her sister needed to use the restroom.

It had been a long time since their last stop. She herself also needed to go.

But she knew her sister was proud and wouldn’t ask for help – it seemed that needing assistance with such a basic function was embarrassing to her.

But out here in the wilderness, without a toilet, her sister, with her immobile legs, had no other choice.

Lin Xiwan put the car keys in her pocket, took a few tissues from a pack – there were a few new packs among the Voodoo Cult’s supplies, seemingly reserved for the Awakened – and then opened the car door.

Sweeping aside some grass with the open door, she got out, closed the door, climbed over the hood to the passenger side, and opened the door.

As she lifted her sister in a princess carry, preparing to retreat into the tall grass, she heard a small voice.

    “Be careful…”

    “Okay.”

Lin Xiwan slowed down, trying to keep her movements steady, backing away into the grass, using her back to push aside the stalks, careful not to let them touch her sister.

After about fifteen meters, she stopped; they were too far from the car now; she wouldn’t be able to find her way back in the dark.

Holding her sister like a baby, Lin Xiwan helped her and then handed her the tissues.

    “Done.”

Hearing her sister’s voice, she helped her back into her pants and carried her back to the jeep.

Although there were more comfortable ways to carry her, her sister’s legs couldn’t support herself, so this was the only way.

After placing her sister back in the passenger seat, Lin Xiwan went to relieve herself.

Lin Jiayao, leaning against the seat, waited for her sister to return, not feeling the slightest bit embarrassed.

They had done this many times during the first year of the apocalypse.

Back then, without the comfort of a camp, her sister had taken care of everything.

If it were two strangers, it would have been… awkward.

But as sisters, they were comfortable with each other; it was just a normal, everyday thing.

Lin Jiayao’s earlier distraction had been the lingering muscle memory from her training session.

The muscle memory from the Training Grounds was transmitted to her main body through the system.

She could even vividly recall the pain she’d felt with her pain receptors turned up.

Such a useless ability, that heightened pain sensitivity…

Lin Jiayao took a bottle of water and poured a little onto her hand, cleaning herself.

Handwashing was a luxury in the apocalypse, especially with drinking water.

But her sister had brought plenty of supplies; a little wouldn’t hurt.

And if they ran out, they could always buy more from a camp.

She had plenty of blood crystals.

    “Chirp—”

A strange bird call caught her attention, but it quickly faded into the distance. She dismissed it.

She decided to wait for her sister’s return before logging into Mask and looking for the strange materials needed to build the [Workbench] and [Medical Station].

Out of politeness, she didn’t activate Bone Spike Lurker.

    It felt like eavesdropping… creepy.

She hoped her sister would return soon; she was curious about Mask’s new abilities.

The Training Grounds could only simulate creatures she had encountered or logged into.

Since she hadn’t logged into the evolved Mask yet, she couldn’t simulate its abilities for practice.

Sitting in the passenger seat, Lin Jiayao tapped on the window, occasionally glancing to the right, waiting for her sister.

But her view was blocked by the tall grass, and it was too dark to see clearly.

Now, she missed the Hive Zombie’s abilities.

The insect vision was incredibly useful.

Wide range, highlighted blood crystals and creatures, and night vision.

The perfect upgrade for Bone Spike Lurker.

    But…

Imagining those disgusting black holes on her skin, her sister’s disgusted expression… Lin Jiayao dismissed the thought.

She wasn’t ready to give up her humanity just yet.
