    Chapter 103: Aerial Disaster

    “Vroom—”
    “Screech—”

An engine roared, then a car braked abruptly in front of the sand-covered airport.

The vehicle slid a considerable distance before coming to a complete stop, likely due to the sand on the runway.

A bald woman in a thin, white windbreaker jumped out of the driver’s seat.

The windbreaker was buttoned just below her navel, revealing that she was wearing nothing underneath.

Even in this “minimalist” attire, she seemed dissatisfied with her clothing.

A woman carrying a military equipment box emerged from the passenger seat and hurried after her.

“So you actually drove all the way back to the camp? Just for this crate?” Luo asked incredulously, watching the woman hurry after her.

“We were low on fuel… and I saw the pilot arriving… so I thought I might as well…” the driver chuckled nervously, not daring to argue.

The crate had been specifically sent for Luo by the Boss, containing things Luo hated: a cut-resistant windbreaker, a bulletproof vest, and several blood crystals.

Items meant for combat; the driver couldn’t disobey the Boss, nor could she argue with Luo, so she just accepted the blame.

“Why does the Boss always want me to wear clothes? It’s so much cooler without them,” Luo grumbled as they walked towards the center of the airport. “Before the apocalypse, I even proposed abolishing the law against public nudity. Too bad it failed; I would have stopped wearing clothes long ago.”

“Thankfully, no one can tell me what to do now.”

She continued to mutter, the driver nodding along.

Yes, Boss, who would dare tell you what to do now?

A B-rank Awakened, practically a god in this world, and with that prominent “V” symbol on her windbreaker, who would be foolish enough to cross her?

And those who’d opposed her proposal before the apocalypse?

    Long dead.

Their money and power couldn’t stop the blood crystal rain; it even rained inside the military base.

The blood crystal infection made everyone equal.

Probably 99% of the world’s population had died on the day the rain started. The driver shuddered at the thought.

Five years later, it was likely even worse.

The abandoned runway was littered with wrecked aircraft, some burned down to their frames.

But the Voodoo Cult hadn’t bothered clearing them; the wreckage didn’t seem to affect their pilot’s ability to take off.

Finally, they reached the center of the airport, where a massive, white, jade-like creature stood.

It resembled a dragonfly, its body made of white bone plates, its hollow insides visible through the gaps.

It was folding its six black, iridescent wings. Its triangular head, covered in chitin, with two red compound eyes, seemed to notice Luo, shifting its massive body and emitting a loud screech.

The giant insect, over ten meters long, shaped like a dragonfly or a moth, its silhouette resembling a narrow B-2 bomber, seemed to be afraid of Luo.

A man jumped down from a gap in the giant insect’s abdomen and ran towards them.

“Boss Luo, you’re here.” The short man with center-parted hair smiled and rubbed his hands together nervously.

“Why is it you?” Luo asked, frowning, a wave of unpleasant memories surfacing as she looked at the giant insect. “Where’s the big beetle?”

“Haha… Old Zhang is on the… plantation burning mission. We switched. The Blood Crystal Beetle is a more stable flier, better for carrying explosives.” The man’s tone was placating. “And ‘Black and White’ here is much faster.”

    “…Sigh, fine.” Luo sighed.

She wasn’t petty; she wouldn’t make a fuss over such a small matter.

And she knew what the “plantation” was; Donghai City. She knew more about this than anyone present.

The Boss had preserved the spores from her pet mushroom and had someone, disguised as an Awakened fleeing the Voodoo Cult, infiltrate that “Survivor’s Light” organization.

That organization had even broadcast the incident, using it as an example, telling people not to panic if they encountered the Voodoo Cult.

This had spoiled some of their fun, but the Boss’s plan had worked. Within two years, the mushrooms had spread.

Luo had never cared about such things and had ignored it.

And having one less large organization to compete with meant more freedom for her.

As for why she disliked this giant insect… it brought back unpleasant memories.

The high-frequency vibrations of its wings, the lack of oxygen at high altitude, the gaps in its bony plates… riding inside it wasn’t comfortable.

    Pure torture.

That flight had turned her, someone who had never even been on a plane, against all flying mutated creatures.

She’d suggested several times that this giant flying insect become her personal “Pokémon,” but the Boss had refused.

Raising such a large, mutated insect wasn’t easy.

They had to feed it blood crystals from bone-type zombies and mutated insects, a costly process taking one or two years, and then it required a C-rank control-type Awakened to control it.

Even the Voodoo Cult, with its vast resources, had only managed to raise four in all these years.

    And planes? Forget about it.

Few pilots had survived the initial blood crystal rain, and even if they had, those from the military wouldn’t join the Voodoo Cult.

They’d only heard about one: a military pilot at Survivor’s Light who could fly a helicopter. A significant threat, and one of the reasons the Voodoo Cult hadn’t attacked Survivor’s Light directly.

“So, are we ready to depart?” the man asked, rubbing his hands together. “Black and White can probably reach Southwest Province, but we have to bypass Yun Province, so we need to hurry.”

“No detours, we’re going straight. I’m on a tight schedule.” Without waiting for his reply, Luo walked towards the insect, climbed onto its bone legs, grabbed the edge of its open abdomen, and climbed inside.

The female driver followed, also entering the… “plane,” as these giant insects were called in the Voodoo Cult, right behind Luo.

The pilot, unhurried, took off his backpack, retrieved a blood crystal stone, and the insect, Black and White, sensing the scent, lowered its body, crawling towards him.

It lowered its head, its jaw unfolding like pincers, caught the tossed crystal, and swallowed it.

“Good boy,” the Voodoo Cult pilot patted Black and White’s compound eyes. “Fly steady, or you’ll get another beating.”

As if understanding, Black and White screeched and then, opening its bone plates, lifted the pilot with its legs and let him climb inside its abdomen.

It was the safest and most stable spot, shielded from the wind, and as long as the controller was inside, the insect wouldn’t go berserk.

With everyone in position, the pilot established his mental connection, and blood-red veins pulsed across Black and White’s black wings.

Its six wings, of varying lengths, unfurled, its silhouette resembling a segmented B-2 bomber.

    “Buzz—”

The six wings began to vibrate rapidly, like a giant ornithopter, creating a sandstorm.

Pushing off the ground with its legs, it rose into the air, quickly gaining altitude, and then, reaching about two hundred meters, sped forward.

Its massive body couldn’t fly any higher with passengers; the energy consumption was too great.

The rapidly beating wings blurred, only the blood crystal veins clearly visible, streaks of red against the sky.

Black and White soared through the air, quickly leaving the desert behind, crossing Xin Province, heading towards Yun Province.

While the flight seemed effortless to the insect, the passengers inside weren’t so comfortable.

Luo clung to a hollow bone spike inside the insect’s abdomen with her left hand, her right arm around her unconscious subordinate, who had passed out shortly after takeoff, her hair whipping in the wind, her lips pale.

The vibrations and the wind were deafening, she cursed, but her voice was lost in the roar.

The agonizing flight continued for about twenty minutes, the landscape below changing from desert to green.

Ten minutes later, they saw cities, but the cities, too, were covered in vegetation, their original shapes barely discernible.

Luo, her initial annoyance fading, began to observe the landscape below, her eyes searching.

    Nothing… unusual…

Why had the Boss warned her to avoid Yun Province, even when flying?

Was there some unstoppable monster hidden amidst these green cities?

The thought piqued her curiosity and her fighting spirit.

After completing this extermination mission, she would have to spend a few months in Yun Province, explore, and see what was so dangerous here.

After passing over several cities, Black and White seemed to be tiring… its blood crystal reserves were dwindling, unable to sustain this level of exertion for much longer. Perhaps another hour at most.

But they should reach Southwest Province within an hour, no problem.

    “Sigh…”

    “Almost over…”

Passing over another city, looking at the building-trees below, Luo sighed softly.

Just as she was closing her eyes, preparing to endure the remaining flight time, the inside of Black and White’s abdomen suddenly lurched violently.

    It had abruptly ascended.

    “What’s happening?”

The insect’s head blocked her view.

    Another Corpse Bird?

Was Black and White trying to avoid it?

This had happened before. Luo, experienced, wasn’t panicked. She looked down.

A green blur zipped past below, incredibly close.

And as the two flying creatures passed each other, Luo’s eyes widened.

A ribbon-like appendage, trailing from the green blur, had snagged on one of Black and White’s abdominal plates.

    “What the—?”

Before she could react, the two giant creatures, now tethered together, collided.

    “Boom—”
    “Buzz—”

Bone and flesh splattered as they tumbled through the air, falling towards the jungle city below.

As they plummeted, a single thought flashed through Luo’s mind.

“This fucking zombie doesn’t have a pilot’s license, does it?”

    “Crash—”

Less than a second later, they slammed into a building-tree, spraying green, viscous fluid, which coated Black and White’s wings, preventing it from flying.

    “Boom—Boom—”

They crashed to the ground, a deafening roar, scattering spores.

But the spores, in the humid air, fell quickly, unable to spread.

And inside the insect’s abdomen, just like the green, unknown zombie it had collided with, two figures lay crumpled, their fates uncertain.

    “Hoo—”
    “Roar—”

Lin Jiayao, controlling her second zombie, flapped its wings, gaining altitude, then, folding them, swooped downwards, pulling up just before hitting the ground, a graceful arc before ascending again.

If she could speak, she would have shouted, “Woohoo~!”

The feeling of flight was exhilarating.

And as she flew, she instinctively mastered the zombie’s flying abilities, her speed and agility increasing, performing aerial acrobatics.

Like a child with a new toy car, speeding down a hill.

She felt… she was becoming a skilled pilot.

    “Whoosh—”

She pulled up sharply, preparing for another dive.

But as she climbed to about two hundred meters, she felt a sudden, powerful vibration ahead.

Her green, fungal eye turned, and she saw a red blur rapidly approaching.

    “What the…?”

    Another flying zombie?

Their speeds were incredible. By the time she’d registered its presence, it was less than fifty meters away.

Shit, I have to avoid it.

She ascended further, tilting her body sideways, preparing for a graceful aerial roll.

But the other zombie also ascended, even faster, and before Lin Jiayao could complete her maneuver, she found herself directly beneath it, attempting a “roll” under its abdomen.

    The roll, however, wasn’t successful.

As her body spun, the vines trailing from her wings snagged on one of the other zombie’s bone plates, and she was pulled upwards, crashing into its tail.

Both lost control, tumbling through the air towards a nearby building, then crashing downwards.

    “Boom—Boom—”

Two deafening crashes as they hit the building-tree, spraying green, viscous fluid, which coated Lin Jiayao’s wings, grounding her.

    “Roar…”

The disorienting impact made her groan. She lay there for a moment, then, with effort, retrieved a blood crystal stone from the safehouse and swallowed it.

She wanted to keep this flying zombie; she couldn’t let it die yet.

And that collision… what had happened?

As she swallowed the blood crystal, her flesh began to regenerate, her previously withered body becoming fuller.

She pulled at the bone plates pinning her wings, freeing herself, and looked at the creature that had caused her “crash.”

It’s definitely that zombie’s fault, she thought; zombies are stupid.

But then, her crystalline eyes widened.

    “Crack—”

From the wreckage of the larger, almost completely dismembered, insect-like zombie, a blood-soaked figure in a white windbreaker was emerging.

A string of bones hung around its neck. It looked at Lin Jiayao, its gaze intense, radiating a powerful, almost suffocating pressure.

An incredibly powerful Awakened… the strongest she’d ever encountered.

And then Lin Jiayao saw the prominent “V” symbol on its windbreaker.

    Holy shit, run!

    No, wait…

    The direction it was flying…

    Was the opposite of hers.

Towards Southwest Province, and a little further… Qingzhou City… This powerful Awakened was responding to the Voodoo Cult’s summons!

Lin Jiayao, who’d been preparing to flee, stopped.

If she let this person pass, if she was truly coming for her, she and her sister would be no match for this woman.

I have to stop her, somehow.

Even just injuring her would be enough.

If she couldn’t protect her main body, even a successful extraction was pointless.

    “Roar—”

    Strike while it’s down.

Lin Jiayao lunged forward, her maw gaping, ready to devour the white-clad figure.

The woman, seeing her approach, smiled, discarded her windbreaker, revealing her tattooed, blood-splattered body.

Blood-red veins pulsed on her shaved head as she clapped her hands together, and the grotesque bone necklace around her neck lifted, a sharp, tooth-like bone glowing red.

Just as Lin Jiayao lunged, her maw open, ready to swallow the woman whole, the glowing bone fragment shot out, trailing a blood-red tendril, a massive worm’s head forming at its tip, which slammed into Lin Jiayao, sending her crashing into the building-tree.

    “Boom—”

The impact created a large crater in the tree’s tangled roots, spraying green, viscous fluid and white fungus everywhere.

And then, the massive, three-headed Sandworm, fully formed, lunged at the roots of the building-tree, as if to devour the green bird zombie.

But after a few bites, the woman seemed to realize something was wrong and pulled the Sandworm back.

She looked at the strange, green bird zombie, now covered in the tree’s sap.

Its mangled body was regenerating in the green fluid.

The sap filled the gaps in its flesh, its broken vines reconnecting with the tree’s, the white fungus on its body spreading rapidly.

As the fungus grew, it also corroded the zombie’s flesh, new vines and tendrils emerging from the wounds.

Was it… absorbing the building-tree’s energy, or was the tree absorbing its energy?

The strange sight made her hesitate.

And as she hesitated, the green bird zombie, inside the crater in the tree’s roots, spread its massive wings, tore away the remaining vines, and roared.

    “Roar—”

She finally understood why the Boss had warned them to avoid this forest.

The zombies here weren’t alone; they had the entire building-tree as their… backup power supply.

And such building-trees covered Kun City.

Chapter 102: City of the Jungle

    “Zzz… Repeating, operation name…”
    “Zzz…”
    “Thump—”
    “Goddamn it!”

Inside an SUV, a woman, her upper body bare, covered in a phoenix tattoo, slammed her fist against the radio.

The force of the blow made the Voodoo Cult driver in the passenger seat flinch. The female driver looked at the woman nervously. “The Boss’s orders…”

“I know, just shut up… No, wait.”

The woman rubbed her shaved head irritably and then, with a powerful kick, sent the car door flying.

Only then did they see that she wasn’t just topless, but completely naked, her body covered in seemingly random characters, like a full-body tattoo.

But unlike her body, her face was bare, her eyebrows and hair completely shaved, her eyes tattooed black, a disturbing contrast.

Even without makeup, this look would terrify children.

She jumped out of the car, the hot sand and gravel sizzling against her bare feet.

Seemingly unfazed, she stood there, naked under the scorching desert sun, took a deep breath, and then choked on the dust.

“Fucking hell… even out here, they won’t leave me alone.” She rubbed her nose and looked at the driver. “Are you sure this is the right place?”

“Yes, Boss,” the driver replied, reaching into the back of the car and retrieving a string of bone plates. She got out of the car, walked over to the naked woman, and handed her the string.

“Thanks,” the woman said politely, taking the bones and putting them around her neck.

The bones were of various shapes and sizes: flat plates, hollow tubes, sharp spikes, seemingly from different mutated creatures.

Intricate patterns, filled with blood crystals that shimmered in the sunlight, were carved into each bone, abstract representations of the creatures they came from.

    “Hoo…”

Standing in the desert, the woman exhaled deeply and closed her eyes.

Suddenly, her eyes snapped open, the tattooed black sclera now streaked with red, the lines spreading across her shaved head like cracks in a volcano.

As if drawn by her will, the bone necklace around her neck lifted and spun.

The spinning necklace slowed, and a small skull hovered before her eyes.

It looked like a cross between a rat and a bat, its four deep eye sockets suggesting it wasn’t an ordinary creature.

The carvings on the skull glowed faintly, pulsing with her will.

    “Buzz—”

The small skull vibrated rapidly, breaking free from the string, its jaws, filled with sharp teeth, snapping open as if alive.

Red, crystalline threads extended from the broken edges of the skull, forming bones, then wings, reconstructing its former body.

The woman bit her thumb, drawing blood, and smeared it on the forming skull.

The blood, as if coming alive, spread across the bone, forming a thin film covering the small “bat.”

The bone necklace settled around her neck, and the “bat,” now hovering in the air, flew around her, its movements controlled by her will.

Finally, it settled above her head, its gaze fixed on the desolate expanse before her.

The blood crystal bat opened its small mouth, emitting a silent wave.

The ground trembled as the wave spread outwards.

“This is it,” she said, stepping into the desert without looking back, issuing a command to the driver. “Come back… in an hour or two.”

“The mission can wait. Drive somewhere far away for now.”

    “Screech—”

A piercing shriek, like a baby’s cry, and the sand beneath them collapsed, a massive, three-headed Sandworm emerging from the earth.

It lunged towards the woman, its three massive, teeth-filled maws, each almost five meters wide, gaping, its enormous body creating a dust storm.

    “Yes, Boss! I’ll be back!”

The driver scrambled into the SUV, slammed on the gas, and sped away, leaving a cloud of dust in her wake.

Finally alone, the woman relaxed, reverting to her most comfortable, primal state.

She stretched her naked body, smiling at the now inanimate bat hovering above her head. “You did well. Return, Bloodsound Bat.”

    “Boom—”

She rolled back, dodging one of the Sandworm’s snapping jaws, and the bat above her head transformed back into a skull, settling back onto the bone necklace around her neck.

    “Quite feisty…” she muttered.

Her fighting spirit ignited. Kneeling in the sand, the bone necklace swaying against her skin, she ripped off a triangular bone plate and sliced her wrist with it.

“I choose you!” A grin spread across her face, the blood on her wrist shimmering with a faint, crystalline glow. “Great Blood Mantis—”

The sun was high overhead. The woman rummaged through a pile of gore.

She was so focused that she didn’t notice the approaching SUV until its engine roared behind her. She turned and looked back.

“Boss… we received the airdrop,” the driver said, gesturing to the crates strapped to the SUV’s roof. “The plane has landed. The Boss wants you back, ASAP.”

“Oh,” the woman replied casually, her hand still rummaging, finally finding what she was looking for. She started pulling at it.

Using a plane… that meant the situation was serious. But she really didn’t want to participate in these… extermination missions.

She preferred hunting powerful mutated zombies, not defenseless humans. She would give the blood crystals to the organization; she just enjoyed the hunt.

    “Crack—”

One of the Sandworm’s teeth broke off. She wiped it on her body, went to the SUV, took out a carving knife, and began working on the bone.

The driver knew it was pointless to disturb her and went to the Sandworm’s massive corpse, collecting the blood crystal stones in a burlap sack.

After carving intricate patterns into the tooth, the woman hung it on her bone necklace, infused it with blood crystals, then, satisfied, placed the now-ornate necklace in the car.

The driver, having collected the blood crystals, placed the sack in the trunk, took the crates from the roof, and then got into the passenger seat.

    “Whirr—”

The woman started the engine and sped towards the airport.

“Boss… this is from the Boss… and also, the mission details…” The driver had been with this woman for three years and knew her temperament well.

    The Boss was… unpredictable.

After the blood crystal infection outbreak, many survivors had embraced their primal instincts, and within the Voodoo Cult, this was even more pronounced.

Their Boss – the driver only knew her surname was Luo; she rarely mentioned her full name – was perhaps the most… liberated.

She’d heard that before the apocalypse, Luo had been a shut-in, addicted to video games.

After being rescued by the Boss, she had, under the Boss’s guidance, fully embraced her true nature – her aversion to clothing being just one aspect.

And Luo had a unique perspective… she seemed to treat the apocalypse like a game, referring to her tattoos as “skins.”

Under the Boss’s tutelage, Luo’s advancement had been rapid, largely due to her constant battles with mutated zombies. She was the spearhead of the Voodoo Cult’s expansion efforts.

About three months ago, she had reached B-rank, a significant boost to the Voodoo Cult’s overall strength.

But the driver knew that despite Luo’s love for exploring and her disregard for blood crystals, she hated killing humans.

This mission… the Boss must have had no other choice but to send her.

“How long to reach Guangdong Province from here?” Luo asked.

“We can’t reach Guangdong directly… The plane will land in Southwest Province. There’s a convoy waiting for us there; we’ll drive to Guangdong from there.”

“Oh…” Luo was silent for a moment. “Which city in Guangdong is closest to us?”

    “Qingzhou City.”

“Hmm…” Luo pressed the accelerator, then, after a while, muttered, “Such a waste of time, fuck.”

“Let’s just get this over with. I’ll just flatten everything with the Sandworm…”

She hoped Guangdong would have some interesting zombies, something to make this trip less boring.

Guangdong Province. On the highway from Qingzhou City to Southwest Province, a jeep drove smoothly along the empty road.

Compared to the chaotic mobilization of the Voodoo Cult, the atmosphere inside the jeep was relaxed.

In about an hour and a half, they would be out of Guangdong Province.

Escaping the encirclement soon; this eased Lin Xiwan’s anxiety.

She even had the leisure to try and correct Huayibai’s way of addressing them.

But she quickly discovered it was futile.

Huayibai could pronounce “Sister,” “Yao,” and “Wan,” but after being taught “Sister Wan” and “Sister Yao,” whenever Lin Xiwan pointed at her younger sister, Huayibai would invariably say, “Mommy!”

After several attempts, Lin Xiwan gave up.

Lin Jiayao had already explained the basics to Huayibai after confirming its identity: “Run away from any humans” and “Hide if there’s a fight.”

Lin Xiwan agreed with this advice. She sensed that Huayibai’s blood crystal level was barely D-rank.

Even with its stretchy body, it wasn’t much of a fighter, though it was good at escaping.

Such abilities were usually only effective after reaching C-rank, unless one developed a unique fighting style.

    But Lin Jiayao wasn’t worried.

Huayibai was just injured, lacking blood crystals to fully heal.

If they encountered a truly dangerous situation, she could always give Huayibai some blood crystals; fungal zombies were incredibly efficient at absorbing them.

Having confirmed that Huayibai was well-behaved and wouldn’t cause trouble or spread spores, Lin Jiayao closed her eyes in the car.

She had recovered enough from her earlier nap; it was time to log into the second zombie and check on Yun Province.

That was a higher priority than educating Huayibai.

With any luck, they would be out of Guangdong Province by tonight and reach Yun Province by tomorrow night.

Assuming everything went smoothly, the roads were clear, and they encountered no obstacles.

Lin Jiayao took a blood crystal from the warehouse, put it in the safehouse as a reserve, and then looked at the login interface.

    「No.1: [Mask] (Available for login)」
    「No.2: 🌐 (Available for login)」
    「No.3: [Goldie] (Available for login)」
    「No.4: [A4] (Available for login)」

She selected the second slot, chose Kun City in Yun Province as the spawn point…

And her consciousness was transported across time and space.

Hopefully, the situation in Yun Province wasn’t too bad. Otherwise, they would have to cross the border from Southwest Province.

Neither of them wanted to leave China.

They didn’t know what the outside world was like, hadn’t heard much about other countries.

The unknown was always frightening; they wouldn’t leave unless absolutely necessary.

Even if the chances were slim, Lin Jiayao wanted to try… disrupting the Voodoo Cult.

If that failed, then they would run.

Perhaps smaller countries had fewer people, fewer mutated zombies.

    Just… avoid India.

She was afraid the Ganges had already spawned Cthulhu.

    “Splat—”

As Lin Jiayao opened her eyes, she heard a wet, squishy sound.

    This is…

    A bad premonition.

    She’d heard similar sounds before.

Either tentacles, or a slime-covered zombie wriggling on the ground.

And she was certain the sound had come from her… opening her eyes.

She opened her eyes, surprised by the clarity of her vision, and then frowned.

The city before her… she wasn’t even sure if she could call it a city anymore.

Green moss covered almost every building. The sky was overcast, no sunlight. The branches of towering trees intertwined with the buildings, a true “urban jungle.”

A damp mist hung in the air, each breath heavy with moisture.

Seeing this, she was slightly relieved.

At least the mist would prevent the spores from spreading easily.

But she didn’t know the state of the zombies here. This was uncharted territory, even Survivor’s Light hadn’t mentioned this place.

She moved her hand, then looked down at her body.

    No… something’s wrong…

    I can’t move my neck?

She realized her “neck” was immobile, but her eyes could move freely.

A familiar feeling… like the crystalline red eyes formed by the Blood Orb Fungus.

    She looked at her body.

    This is…

    What the…

    “Crack—”

She moved her “wings.” As she did, the branches connected to her body snapped.

Pulling her arms free from the vines behind her, she took a few unsteady steps and then collapsed onto the ground.

She felt weak and drained. Looking behind her, she saw a massive, writhing “building-tree.”

Almost a hundred meters tall, covered in vines, moss, and some fluffy white fungus, she even saw a few strands of the familiar red Blood Orb Fungus.

A powerful urge to consume the tree’s vines and branches washed over her.

But she quickly suppressed it, noticing the countless desiccated corpses, human, zombie, and animal, entangled within the tree.

    “Gasp…”

A low growl escaped her throat instead of a gasp.

Looking down at her reflection in a puddle on the ground, she finally saw what she looked like.

    A… two-meter-tall, headless skeleton bird?

Only a thin layer of flesh remained on its bones, seemingly drained of all its blood and essence, its internal organs gone.

Dark green vines, having burrowed deep into her body, and a fluffy white fungus covered her skeletal frame.

And wrapped around the vertebrae where her neck should be was an emerald green fungal growth, its tip a large, 25-centimeter-wide cap, serving as her eyes.

She moved her arms – skeletal wings – the vines and fungal growth swaying with the movement.

She… had no idea what kind of monster she was controlling.

It looked like a headless pterodactyl with a giant mushroom cap, its flesh mostly gone, its hollow ribcage clearly visible.

The vines and fungus had become its new “skin,” covering its wings, moving with them.

Its legs had been replaced by two thin, brown branches, its tail a long, faintly glowing green tendril and vine.

After staring at it for a while, Lin Jiayao finally recognized what it resembled.

A grotesque fusion of a peacock and a pterodactyl, its body mostly… parasitized, or perhaps, in a symbiotic relationship with various organisms.

Like a mutated bird, consumed and transformed by various parasites.

And strangely, she didn’t sense any special abilities. She couldn’t control the vines or fungus, only the fungal cap that served as her eyes.

After all she had experienced, she finally understood her current state.

The zombie she had logged into was a mutated bird.

This mutated bird had been captured by the massive “building-tree” and drained of its blood crystals and energy.

But instead of dying, it had become a host for the tree’s various parasites, its life force barely sustained.

She was now a frail husk, animated by a collection of vines, fungi, and bacteria.

Should I use some blood crystals to restore it?

After a moment of hesitation, she dismissed the thought.

I can still move. I’ll check the extraction point first.

She rotated her fungal eye 360 degrees, locating the extraction point behind her.

    「Extraction Time 01:58:11」
    【Extraction Point: 47km】

    Less than two hours?

    47 kilometers?

    Are you fucking kidding me?

Although she had no fists, she felt them clenching.

    No, wait…

The system wouldn’t give her impossible tasks; if it was just about reaching the extraction point, there had to be a way.

But with so little time, how could she possibly cover that distance with these two twig-like legs?

Then she looked at her wings.

Could it be… could I still fly like this?

She experimentally flapped her wings, a faint muscle memory surfacing.

The large wings beat, the vines and fungal growths swaying wildly.

Then, following instinct, she leaped upwards, the six-meter wingspan and the buoyancy of the fungal growths lifting her slightly off the ground.

Dead branches and leaves scattered beneath her, and then she crashed back down.

    Still can’t fly…

She struggled to her feet, looking at the claws on her wings, then at the tall “building-tree.”

    Perhaps… from a higher vantage point…

She approached the tree, realizing that as long as she resisted the urge to consume it, it wouldn’t attack.

Using the branches and vines as handholds, she began to climb.

The branch-like legs and the claws on her wings made climbing surprisingly easy.

Within twenty minutes, she had reached the top, overlooking the mist-shrouded, green-covered city.

This place seemed just as dangerous as anywhere else… especially with so many parasites and plants.

She would investigate the area around the extraction point later.

If it was too dangerous, she would avoid it.

Gripping the vines at the edge of the rooftop with her claws, she shifted her weight.

    Here goes nothing.

With a powerful leap, she flapped her wings, holding them parallel to the ground.

The emerald green fungal growth and the dark green vines trailed behind her like a flowing cape, a green phoenix soaring through the air.

    “Whoosh—”

She felt the wind rushing past, her body finding its balance, gliding towards the extraction point.

    I’m flying!

The sensation of flight, unlike the insect vision, was exhilarating.

At this speed, she could reach the extraction point within an hour, and from above, the area seemed clear, relatively safe.

As long as I don’t get hit by a plane, extraction should be easy.

Lin Jiayao relaxed slightly, thinking this.

As if there would still be planes in the apocalypse… how ridiculous… A bird-plane collision… seriously…

She chuckled at her own absurd thought.

    Chapter 101: Statewide Lockdown

    “Whirr—”

The jeep drove smoothly along the highway. The road was clear, the weather fine.

Lin Jiayao, resting in the passenger seat, drifted off to sleep and had a strange dream.

Perhaps due to her weakened mental state, she’d been sleeping almost constantly since getting in the car, too exhausted even to log into her zombies.

As she slept, her mental strength slowly recovered, and the dream…

    It was… a nightmare.

She dreamed that upon opening her eyes, Huayibai, just like in Survivor’s Light, was sitting on her lap, its little feet dangling, waiting for her to wake up.

But as she reached out to touch Huayibai’s head, she saw, beside it, in the driver’s seat, her sister’s body, entangled in tendrils, lifeless.

    “Gasp—”

The dream, so vivid, so real, jolted her awake, a cold sweat drenching her.

    “Hoo…”

She glanced at her sister, still driving, and breathed a sigh of relief.

“Yao? Bad dream? The same one as before?” Lin Xiwan, noticing her sister’s reaction, slowed down.

“It’s fine… just a nightmare. Not about the Voodoo Cult.” Lin Jiayao shook her head, leaned back, and instinctively placed her hand on the armrest, activating Bone Spike Lurker.

Good, nothing unusual besides the sound of the engine… wait, is that chewing coming from the back? Did a rat get into the supplies?

Just as she was about to turn around, she heard her sister speak.

“Your sleep quality has been terrible lately…” Lin Xiwan pursed her lips, worried about her sister, then asked casually, “By the way, Xiao Yibai, before your team left Donghai…”

Huh? Xiao Yibai? Who’s Xiao Yibai?

Lin Jiayao stared at her sister, thinking she was still dreaming.

Then, realization dawning, she turned and looked at the back of the car.

A small figure sat on a box of supplies, its legs dangling, gnawing on an ear of corn, its little shoes neatly placed beside it.

“Oh, Yao, I forgot to tell you, this little one is Huayibai, an Awakened,” Lin Xiwan explained, slowing down further, a smile on her face.

“She was sent on a mission by Survivor’s Light before the lockdown. But after the lockdown, her team couldn’t return. They disbanded, and she was left wandering alone on the highway.”

The explanation… was weak. Although it wasn’t unusual for exploration teams to include children, especially Awakened ones, if Lin Jiayao had encountered a random Awakened child, she wouldn’t have trusted them so easily.

And her sister wasn’t usually this gullible.

    What happened?

Had her sister been infected by the fungus?

But she couldn’t sense any spores on her.

“How did she get in the car?” Lin Jiayao asked, relieved that nothing bad had happened, but still suspicious.

“Well… I accidentally hit her with the car. Thankfully, her ability makes her body… flexible, so she wasn’t seriously injured. And then…”

Before her sister could finish, Huayibai dropped the corn cob, looked at Lin Jiayao, and shouted, “Mommy!”

“Ahem… so, yeah,” Lin Xiwan scratched her head, looking at her sister. “I found her when I got out of the car to use the restroom. She insisted you were her mother…”

“So I explained that you only have me, your closest family, and you couldn’t possibly be her mother. Then she thought for a moment and called me…”

    “Daddy!” Huayibai chimed in obediently.

“So I figured, she seemed harmless enough, and I could drop her off at the next camp.” Lin Xiwan looked at her sister apologetically. “Sorry, I didn’t ask you first.”

    Lin Jiayao: “…”

So, a single “Daddy” had swayed her sister?

She wasn’t going to question how Huayibai had managed to get in the car. She was more interested in its thought process.

“Why… did you call her Daddy?” she asked Huayibai, pointing at her sister.

“Isn’t Daddy the person closest to Mommy?” Huayibai blinked, her question innocent.

Lin Jiayao took a deep breath, clenching her fist.

She couldn’t argue with that logic.

“Children growing up in the apocalypse…” Lin Xiwan shook her head, sighing. “Their education… leaves much to be desired.”

    “Indeed…” Lin Jiayao sighed.

Since Huayibai was already here, there was no need for explanations. But its intelligence seemed to be developing faster than she’d anticipated.

It had even fabricated a backstory, a surprisingly convincing one.

But this incident made Lin Jiayao wary.

Her sister didn’t understand fungal zombies, still clinging to the belief that “if it can talk, it’s human.”

That kind of thinking was dangerous in the apocalypse.

I need to tell her the truth soon. It’s a good thing it’s Huayibai… if it were another fungal zombie…

Actually, that might not be so bad.

“Sister… have you forgotten?” Lin Jiayao looked at her sister. “What Survivor’s Light said about…”

“Oh, you mean the fungal zombies?” Lin Xiwan, steering with one hand, ruffled her sister’s hair with the other. “Do you think I’m stupid? I made her write her own name.”

“Write…?” Lin Xiwan glanced back at Huayibai, a flicker of doubt in her eyes.

Indeed, according to both Survivor’s Light and the Voodoo Cult diaries, fungal zombies couldn’t think independently or write.

They just acted according to the host’s pre-infection memories.

That’s why the Voodoo Cult used diaries to detect infections.

When did Huayibai learn to write?

Now Lin Jiayao understood how Huayibai had tricked her sister.

Being able to write had convinced her sister it was a normal human child. If Lin Jiayao herself hadn’t encountered it before, she might have been fooled too.

“So, Xiao Yibai, where are you headed? If it’s on our way, we can give you a ride,” Lin Xiwan asked, smiling at Huayibai through the rearview mirror.

She felt bad for hitting her with the car.

And the little girl was quite cute, a little… simple, and taking care of it, teaching it things, watching it eat, it felt like having a daughter.

But she already had her sister to care for; she couldn’t take on another child, which was why she’d left the other two girls at the Qingzhou camp.

“Yibai is not going anywhere,” Huayibai shook her head. “Yibai will stay with Mommy.”

“But she’s not your mommy. There’s barely any age difference between you; how could Yaoyao be your mother?” Lin Xiwan chuckled, shaking her head.

Huayibai’s dangling feet stilled, and the corn cob slipped from its grasp.

It jumped down from the box, slipped on the half-eaten corn, and then, on its knees, crawled to the back of the passenger seat, peering over at Lin Jiayao.

“Mommy…” Tears welled up in its eyes as it looked up at Lin Jiayao, then, seeing Lin Jiayao look at it, quickly lowered its head.

    “Doesn’t Mommy want Yibai anymore…?”

After a moment, seeing no reaction, it reached out and poked Lin Jiayao’s arm, then, when Lin Jiayao looked at it again, lowered its head, resting it against Lin Jiayao’s arm.

“Sigh…” Lin Jiayao couldn’t resist and gently patted Huayibai’s head.

Huayibai instantly cheered up, nuzzling Lin Jiayao’s hand like a kitten.

Lin Xiwan, watching this, couldn’t help but smile.

It was rare to see her sister so… flustered. If only she had a camera; she would capture this priceless expression of utter exasperation.

But why was this girl so clingy? They had just met, and she was already calling Lin Jiayao “Mommy” and Lin Xiwan “Daddy.”

    So strange.

But besides that strange quirk, the girl was quite well-behaved.

And earlier, while her sister was asleep, she had asked Huayibai about Survivor’s Light, and its answers had been surprisingly detailed, even revealing some inside information.

She had always been fascinated by Survivor’s Light. Now, with this walking encyclopedia, she’d learned a lot.

But the more she learned, the more she regretted Survivor’s Light’s downfall. She hoped they would recover soon, once again becoming a beacon of hope.

Just as Lin Xiwan was about to correct Huayibai’s form of address, the radio crackled to life.

“Wait a moment.” She interrupted Huayibai, stopped the car, and turned up the volume.

To monitor the Voodoo Cult’s movements, she kept the radio tuned to their frequency; their flamboyant actions and communications were usually broadcast openly.

And now, finally, after a long silence, a message:

    “Zzz… zzz…”

    “V-B-03, V-C-01, V-C-011, V-C-020, V-C-031…”

    “V-D-01… V-D-021…”

“Zzz… All sweep team leaders listed, immediately cease current operations. V-B-03 will assume command of an urgent mission…”

After repeating this message three or four times, the broadcast changed, a new set of instructions.

    “Operation: Encirclement.”

“Phase One: Advance simultaneously from multiple highway entrances surrounding Guangdong Province. Purge Guangdong Province, leave no survivors.”

“Phase Two: Advance west from Guangdong Province. Kill on sight.”

    “Time limit: None.”

    “Repeating… Operation…”

    “Zzz…”

Lin Xiwan’s brief moment of relaxation vanished, her heart plummeting.

“What… what do they mean…?” she stammered, turning to her sister. “Encircle and purge… the entire province? Have they finally lost their minds?!”

Before, they had only heard about isolated incidents of the Voodoo Cult attacking specific camps, but now, with Survivor’s Light in lockdown, they were planning a province-wide purge?

This was a declaration of war against all of humanity!

And the broadcast had listed over a dozen C-rank members, led by a B-rank Awakened.

A B-rank… what did that even mean?

Although Lin Xiwan had never encountered a B-rank Awakened, having gone through several evolutions herself, she understood the transformative power of these breakthroughs.

Suddenly, she snapped out of her stupor, started the engine, and slammed on the gas.

    Run!

Escape Guangdong Province! They couldn’t stay within the encirclement!

“Voodoo Cult…” Huayibai, nestled against Lin Jiayao’s hand, looked up, murmuring the name.

“What is it? Have you encountered the Voodoo Cult before?” Lin Jiayao asked, sensing that Huayibai was much weaker now than in Donghai City.

She seemed to have been seriously injured.

“Yibai met the Voodoo Cult on the road. They had those… V… symbols on them.”

Huayibai, now kneeling behind the front seats, using the center console for support, looked at Lin Jiayao, her small face filled with anguish.

“They… they ‘boomed’ Yibai’s books!” she said, her arms outstretched, reenacting the explosion.

Huayibai had encountered the Voodoo Cult on the way here?

But she had been heading straight for Lin Jiayao. If she had encountered the Voodoo Cult, then they were likely targeting… her…

“What happened afterwards?” Lin Jiayao asked, needing more information.

    “Um…”

Huayibai hesitated. “Then their boom-boom car went ‘BOOM,’ and they were all on fire… but Yibai’s diary also…”

    Boom-boom car?

    What’s a boom-boom car?

“You encountered a Voodoo Cult convoy? Which direction were they heading?” Lin Xiwan asked seriously, overhearing their conversation. “Are you carrying anything from them? Did you eat anything they gave you?”

Huayibai was about to mention eating their meat when she felt her mommy’s mental call and stopped.

“Yibai forgot,” she said, shaking her head.

“Alright… Yao, check the map. We have to leave Guangdong Province and get as far away from Chongyu as possible. Maybe we can go north…”

“Okay, I’ll take a look.” Lin Jiayao took out the map and started studying it, her heart pounding.

The entire province was about to be surrounded by the Voodoo Cult, led by a B-rank Awakened.

Both Mask and A4 were in Guangdong Province… what should I do?

    She worried about her zombies.

  • Sickly Girl Doesn’t Die in Zombie Simulator 100p2

    Chapter 100: Escape & Reunion p2

    Multiple personalities?

Seeing her attack so easily thwarted, Lin Jiayao remained motionless… she couldn’t move, her tiny fungal legs were useless, she could only wait.

At least she now knew the leader of the Voodoo Cult was mentally unstable, with multiple personalities, at least three, as far as she could tell.

A calm, composed mastermind, a sentimental, fragile persona, and a foul-mouthed, aggressive personality mirroring the Voodoo Cult’s style.

As Lin Jiayao stared, hoping to glean more information, Wu Hejun finally looked at her.

“You’re still here,” she said, looking down at Lin Jiayao, a slight smile on her face. “Thank you for fulfilling Junjun’s wish.”

Lin Jiayao didn’t reply, unsure of this personality’s intentions.

Did she see her as just an ordinary zombie? Planning to kill her after “fulfilling the wish”? Or would she be locked back in the basement?

Judging by this modified villa, likely back to the basement.

“Xin City… Fuzhou City… Donghai… no, Donghai is gone…” Wu Hejun chuckled, walking towards Lin Jiayao. “And Qingzhou City.”

    “Where are you?”

“…Why are you trying to kill me?”

    “Fucking answer me!”

Three sentences, in different tones, tumbling out almost simultaneously.

And then, her hand shot out, gripping Lin Jiayao’s eyes.

    “AAAAAH!!!”

An agonizing pain, unlike anything she had ever felt, a searing, soul-wrenching agony.

The consciousness switching map in the upper left corner of her vision flashed frantically, indicating her main body was being harmed.

“You fucking dare to come here?!”

“Where are you, you bitch?! Answer me!”

    “Speak! Are you mute?! Huh?!”

    “You fucking—”

    “Crunch—”

    “Still not talking?!”

    “Rip—”

“I don’t care what you’re planning, I’ll find you and tear you apart! You just wait!”

Wu Hejun’s fingers dug into Lin Jiayao’s eyes. Fighting the excruciating pain, Lin Jiayao switched back to her main body.

    But the pain didn’t disappear.

    “Ugh—!”

She arched her back, tears, mixed with blood, welling up in her eyes.

Her sudden movement and the choked sound woke Lin Xiwan. She turned and saw her sister, her body curled up, trembling.

“Yao?!” She shook her sister’s shoulders, her Awakened night vision just barely able to make out the blood and tears on her face. “What’s wrong?!” she exclaimed.

But Lin Jiayao couldn’t respond, the pain almost unbearable, her lips pale and trembling.

Only when the words 「Extraction Failed」 appeared before her eyes did the pain subside.

    “Gasp—Gasp—”

She lay on the bed, panting, her body relaxing.

An overwhelming wave of mental and physical exhaustion washed over her.

“Yao… Yao? Why are your eyes bleeding? Is it your ability? Wait, I’ll get you some blood crystals…”

Lin Xiwan wasn’t completely panicked. Seeing the problem was with her sister’s eyes, she immediately went to find blood crystals.

There was no better remedy for an Awakened.

By the time she returned, a blood crystal in hand, about to crush a small piece and apply it to her sister’s eyes, Lin Jiayao had recovered and was looking at her.

“Sister… I’m fine…” she said weakly, forcing a smile, but the bloodstains on her face belied her words.

“What happened, Yao? Your eyes…” Seeing her sister’s pain, Lin Xiwan felt tears welling up; she wished it were her who was hurt.

After the initial disorientation, Lin Jiayao had recovered.

    A mental attack…

The Voodoo Cult leader’s attack hadn’t just injured her second zombie, but had also transmitted the pain to her main body.

It had even caused the capillaries in her eyes to rupture.

So this is what it feels like to be slapped across the internet?

And the Voodoo Cult leader could seemingly track her consciousness… besides America, which was too far, she had listed every place she had been.

And why had that cowardly personality said “Why are you trying to kill me?”

Lin Jiayao had never interacted with them.

In fact, she had always avoided them.

Why was the Voodoo Cult targeting her?

The thought made her head pound.

    I have to tell Sister.

“Sister…” Lin Jiayao opened her eyes, looked at her sister, and extended her hand.

Lin Xiwan quickly took her hand, helping her sit up. “I’m here.”

“I… I just dreamed about the Voodoo Cult…” Lin Jiayao said after a moment. “She said… she knows where I am… she wants to kill me…”

She didn’t dare say it was the Voodoo Cult leader, afraid of scaring her sister.

Her sister’s words stunned Lin Xiwan, then a chill ran down her spine.

    A dream?

No, even a dream couldn’t be taken lightly… there were all kinds of strange abilities in this world; who knew if there were Awakened who could manipulate dreams?

Perhaps the Voodoo Cult was targeting her because of the previous incident.

A dream that caused real-world harm… that had to be the work of an Awakened.

They’d both been covered in Voodoo Cult blood, and their jeep had been filled with their supplies.

She didn’t know if it was something they’d eaten or touched that allowed the Awakened to enter their dreams, but it was definitely a warning.

A warning that they were in trouble, that the Voodoo Cult was coming for them.

“It’s okay… Yao, how are your eyes now? Do they still hurt?” Lin Xiwan changed the subject, focusing on her sister’s injuries.

She figured the Voodoo Cult Awakened, unable to penetrate her own mind, had targeted her weaker sister.

It was her own carelessness that had given them the opportunity… she hadn’t suspected anything wrong with the Voodoo Cult’s food or supplies.

“They don’t hurt anymore,” Lin Jiayao said, shaking her head. “Just a momentary pain.”

She didn’t want to worry her sister further and didn’t reveal what she had experienced.

She was already planning their escape.

Run, as far as possible, preferably somewhere beyond the Voodoo Cult leader’s reach.

Her precognitive, or rather, sensory ability couldn’t be infinite; she hadn’t been able to detect Goldie in America.

Only when she was truly strong could she confront the Voodoo Cult leader, discover her motives, and understand how she had been targeted.

Now… she could only run and become stronger.

Looking at the 12-hour cooldown timer on the second zombie slot, Lin Jiayao took a deep breath.

    They had to leave, soon.

Before they endangered the Qingzhou University camp.

The second slot would be available tomorrow morning, before they reached Yun Province. She could log in on the road and check the situation in Kun City, deciding then whether to detour or proceed.

“Yao…” Lin Xiwan, after a long moment of agonizing silence, finally spoke, hugging her sister tightly. “Let’s run.”

Against such a powerful and malevolent organization, the two of them were too weak.

Their only option was to run, as far as possible.

“Okay,” Lin Jiayao nodded. “She said in my dream… they’re coming from Chongyu City… she told us not to run.”

“Then we’ll run faster, to somewhere far from Chongyu City,” Lin Xiwan took a deep breath, nodded, then stood up. “Yao… you rest in the wheelchair. I’ll go prepare.”

She had to destroy everything in the jeep, buy new supplies… she even had to wake Wan Zi in the middle of the night.

The sooner they left, the better, both for them and for the camp.

Lin Jiayao nodded, knowing this wasn’t the time for sentimentality.

She knew her sister wouldn’t leave her alone in the dorm.

Lin Xiwan unfolded the wheelchair, gently lifted her sister, placed her in it, and then wheeled her to room 101 to ask Auntie Lan for Wan Zi’s location.

Led by Auntie Lan, Lin Xiwan found Wan Zi, explained their situation, and then Wan Zi, looking at Lin Jiayao resting in the wheelchair, her eyes closed, felt a chill.

Holy shit… they’d provoked the Voodoo Cult?!

But she maintained her composure. She wanted to curse, but she wasn’t sure she could beat Lin Xiwan in a fight; that would be awkward.

She immediately had people remove and destroy everything from Lin Xiwan’s jeep, then helped her select and load new supplies into a replacement vehicle.

She even woke up the two little girls, confirmed they hadn’t had any… strange dreams, and then destroyed all their belongings.

By around four or five in the morning, as the sky began to lighten, Lin Xiwan had a jeep full of supplies, a full tank of gas, and even a few spare folding wheelchairs.

For all of this, Wan Zi only charged one and a half blood crystals, leaving Lin Xiwan with half a crystal for emergencies. She could have taken them all.

But Wan Zi wasn’t that kind of person; she wasn’t greedy.

And the sisters had warned her, and the image of the younger sister’s bloodied face was still fresh in her mind; they were all victims in this apocalypse.

No need to make things more difficult for fellow survivors.

After sending off the two sisters, who were now, in her eyes, harbingers of misfortune, Wan Zi couldn’t shake her unease. Finally, she led her people to camouflage the camp, to make it look abandoned.

And she warned everyone to stay within the camp for the next month, all scavenging missions canceled.

She could foresee the ensuing chaos and anxiety, at least for the next month or two.

Unless they heard the Voodoo Cult’s radio broadcasts cease, or someone announced their demise – a wishful thought.

    “Whirr—”

As dawn broke, Lin Xiwan and her sister were on the road.

She glanced at her sister constantly, her face etched with worry.

Not being able to stay in the camp was disappointing, but having her sister by her side was enough.

Her biggest worry now was that her sister had been “marked” and would suffer another mental attack, so she checked on her regularly.

The bloodstains on Lin Jiayao’s face had been cleaned; she was now sleeping soundly, leaning against the headrest, her face turned towards Lin Xiwan.

If she even frowned, Lin Xiwan would wake her immediately.

As they drove onto the highway, the road ahead clear, Lin Xiwan glanced at her sister again.

And in that brief moment of distraction, it happened.

    “Thump—”

A sudden impact, and she saw something white fly through the air.

What was that? A zombie? A human?

She didn’t stop. If it was a human, they were beyond help. If it was a zombie, then good riddance. There was no need to risk stopping and checking.

And looking in the rearview mirror, the road behind them was clear.

    Had she imagined it?

She would check the car for damage later, when they found a place to rest.

What Lin Xiwan didn’t know was that a small, white figure was now lying on the jeep’s roof.

Its back was covered in tendrils, which clung to the metal, preventing it from falling.

It lay there, its hands clutching its head, tears streaming from its eyes, caught by the wind and then pulled back, a comical sight.

    “Waaah…”

    “Cars… cars really are dangerous…”

  • Sickly Girl Doesn’t Die in Zombie Simulator 100p1

    Chapter 100: Escape & Reunion p1

Although she couldn’t hear anything, the frantic “affection” displayed by the gaunt woman before her made Lin Jiayao deeply uncomfortable.

Especially after merging with this fungal zombie’s original memories, the feeling intensified.

If the apocalypse hadn’t happened, Nangong Mian would have lived an ordinary life, the memory of her childhood friend’s descent into madness fading as she met more people.

To Nangong Mian, the woman before her was just a childhood companion, a friend she’d gradually lost contact with after entering middle school.

Many people experienced similar childhood friendships, fading as they grew older.

But to Wu Hejun – the woman’s name, according to the memories – their relationship wasn’t so simple.

To Wu Hejun, they were inseparable childhood sweethearts.

Even after being abandoned in a mental institution, ignored by everyone, including her parents, only Nangong Mian had visited her during her darkest moments.

She had tried to keep Nangong Mian with her forever, but her own weakened state, due to long-term malnutrition, had made her attempts fail.

She could sense Nangong Mian still “loved” her; otherwise, she wouldn’t have visited so many times.

But after the nurses told her Nangong Mian’s parents had forbidden her from visiting, Wu Hejun had descended into despair, her hatred for the world growing.

Consumed by her desire to escape, her antisocial tendencies intensified, and finally, after a shower of blood crystals, she had gained her freedom.

And then she had found Nangong Mian.

Lin Jiayao didn’t know the details of Wu Hejun’s experiences, but the way she looked at her, the intensity in her eyes, made her uneasy.

    This woman was clearly unhinged.

While Wu Hejun hugged and nuzzled her, Lin Jiayao used the remaining blood crystals to try and restore this body to its human form.

It seemed the fungus infecting Nangong Mian hadn’t inherited the Mimic Fruiting Body ability; it was reverting to its fungal form.

But now, having logged in, Lin Jiayao had granted it that ability. With enough blood crystals, she could restore its human appearance, regaining hearing and speech.

Suddenly, Wu Hejun, still hugging her, seemed to hear something, flinching and turning towards the doorway.

A man in a brown leather jacket, sunglasses obscuring his eyes, stood there, smiling.

He was carrying a bound figure.

He spoke, a goatee visible beneath his mask, but Lin Jiayao, without Bone Spike Lurker activated, could only see his lips moving, unable to hear or understand.

After a brief exchange with Wu Hejun, the man in sunglasses cut the ropes binding the figure he held.

The man collapsed onto the damp floor.

He quickly scrambled to his feet, knelt, and, pressing his hands against the cold, damp concrete, kowtowed repeatedly towards Wu Hejun.

    Pleading for his life.

But Wu Hejun seemed oblivious to him, her gaze fixed on the blood-red fungal mass in her hands.

She took out a few grams of blood crystals and carefully offered them to Lin Jiayao.

Free blood crystals; Lin Jiayao wasn’t going to refuse.

She extended her tendrils, absorbing the crystals, the energy restoring her, her form twisting and shifting towards a human shape.

A head formed in Wu Hejun’s hands.

Wu Hejun stared, her eyes wide with disbelief.

Even the goateed man at the doorway was stunned.

As the head formed, Lin Jiayao could finally hear.

“Please… please… I’ll join the Voodoo Cult! I’ll do anything! Just please, don’t kill me!”

The desperate pleas of the kneeling man assaulted her ears.

“It worked… it worked!!!” Wu Hejun’s hands trembled, holding the head. “Brother Gou, it worked! Amian is back! She evolved!”

“Brother Gou, no need to keep collecting… just burn Donghai City… burn it all… Blood crystals! She needs more blood crystals! Brother Gou, bring me the blood crystals! Quick!”

Hearing her insane ramblings, the goateed man, finally reacting, nodded quickly. “Right, right, I’ll go get them.”

He closed the door and hurried upstairs.

Now, in the basement, only a head, a lunatic, and a terrified man, his forehead pressed against the floor, not even daring to breathe, remained.

“Blood crystals… blood crystals… It’s okay, Mian, once you absorb enough blood crystals, you’ll be back…”

Wu Hejun cradled the head, a twisted smile on her face.

Then, as if suddenly remembering something, she said, “Blood crystals… that’s right, I have more here!”

“Mian, wait for me, I’ll go get them…”

She gently placed the head on the ground and walked towards the kneeling man.

Hearing her footsteps, the man trembled, looking up at her with terror.

“I want to join the Voo—”

    “Thump—”

A fist slammed into his face, cutting him off mid-sentence.

His nose broke, blood flowing from his mouth, but he didn’t dare fight back, his body still trembling.

    “I’ll join—”

    “Thump—”

Another blow, his vision blurring. Before he could raise his head, another fist connected.

    “Thump, thump, thump—”

“Give me the blood crystals! Where are they?!” Wu Hejun’s blows rained down, each punch with the force of an ordinary person, no enhanced Awakened strength.

But the man offered no resistance, as if knowing it was futile.

    “Thump—Thump—Thump—”

“Give them to me! Give them to me! Give them to me!”

After he collapsed, Wu Hejun stomped on his face repeatedly, the sickening crunch of bone, the spurting of blood, gore, and eyeballs.

The frenzied assault continued for about a minute, until the “face” beneath her foot was no longer a face, just a pulpy mass of bone fragments, flesh, and brain matter.

    Then she stopped.

Because she saw blood crystals forming in the blood and gore.

A living human had just died in front of her, but she showed no emotion, only excitement, as she picked up the brain-smeared blood crystals.

To her, there was no difference between humans and zombies, just vessels for blood crystals. Kill them, and they dropped loot; simple as that.

She ran back to Lin Jiayao, ignoring the filth and water on the floor, knelt down, and shoved the blood crystal towards Lin Jiayao’s mouth.

    Holy shit—brains!

Seeing the brain matter clinging to the crystal, Lin Jiayao’s eyes widened in horror, her mouth instinctively closing.

    No… I can’t refuse… I can’t show any aversion to blood crystals.

Zombies craved blood crystals; they would devour them instantly, store them within their bodies, never refuse them.

She opened her mouth as the brain-smeared crystal approached.

But before it reached her lips, tendrils extended from her mouth, their weak, trembling tips gently grasping the crystal, catching it.

The blood crystal dissolved, the liquefied essence flowing into her, but the brain matter remained, flicked away by the tendrils.

Fueled by the blood crystal, Lin Jiayao began to regenerate, a neck and shoulders forming. She felt she could speak now.

But she didn’t. Less was more; she didn’t want to arouse suspicion.

She was waiting for an opportunity.

A chance to escape, or a chance to infect this woman with spores.

This woman seemed to be a high-ranking member of the Voodoo Cult. If she could control her, she could cause chaos within their ranks.

“Mian? Mian? Can you hear me?” Wu Hejun’s hands trembled with excitement as the figure in her hands began to take shape, her eyes narrowed in what seemed like… bliss.

    “Mian… I’ve waited so long for you…”

“I kept wondering… why could the others retain their human form, but not you?”

    “Then I realized… it’s a matter of rank. Your rank wasn’t high enough… even consuming them all wasn’t enough…”

“But it’s okay… we can cultivate these tendrils. You know how you recovered? After that shipment from the Donghai plantation arrived, just a few, and you were fine…”

    “Mian… I missed you so much…”

As she spoke, tears streamed down her face, her words a rambling, incoherent mix of affection and madness.

But Lin Jiayao felt no warmth, only disgust.

Even Nangong Mian herself, hearing these words, witnessing this scene, would have been horrified.

Her feelings for Nangong Mian were twisted and obsessive, the kind of affection that would terrify a normal person.

“Mian? Can you still not hear me? It’s okay… you’ll recover soon… very soon…”

After a moment of thought, Lin Jiayao decided to put on an Oscar-worthy performance.

If speaking was dangerous, then she would speak… nonsense.

“Here… scared…” she said, her voice trembling, feigning fear. “So dark… scared… so much blood…”

The basement was brightly lit, but she continued to repeat nonsensical phrases like “so dark.”

She was mimicking Nangong Mian’s terror and helplessness in the face of the horde, her last memory.

Having experienced so many fragmented memories, she was becoming quite adept at mimicking emotions.

    A true method actor.

As expected, her performance made Wu Hejun panic.

“It’s okay, Mian, don’t be afraid. I shouldn’t have kept you down here. I’m sorry, Mian, don’t be afraid, I’ll…”

Lin Jiayao felt herself being lifted.

Wu Hejun, cradling her head, rushed towards the door, reaching for the handle, but it was locked.

“Damn it! Open the door!!! Motherfucker!” She rattled the door violently, but her strength was that of an ordinary person, no enhanced Awakened power.

Fortunately, the goateed man hadn’t been slacking. Before Wu Hejun could fully lose control, he rushed back with a few blood crystal stones and unlocked the door.

“Bo—” Before he could speak, Wu Hejun pushed past him.

She rushed out of the basement, still carrying the head.

The goateed man’s eyes widened behind his goggles. He knew what the Boss kept locked in that basement. And now she was taking it outside?

Whatever the crazy Boss did, he had to clean up the mess. Without hesitation, he pocketed the blood crystals and ran after her.

Lin Jiayao, cradled in Wu Hejun’s arms, saw the extraction point drawing closer, her heart rate slowing.

Out of the basement, safe for now, all she needed to consider was how to spread her spores.

Unlike other fungal zombies, she could control the movement of her spores, even if only for a short distance.

If she could get them near a mask or goggles, she could make them penetrate the small gaps and infect the wearer through their mucous membranes.

“Boss! Boss! Blood crystals! I brought the blood crystals!” the goateed man shouted from behind, not daring to give orders, just hoping she would stop.

    “We’re out… we’re out… still dark? Still scared? Mian? We’re out now… huff…”

Wu Hejun, having run from the basement to the villa’s living room, was panting like someone out of shape.

And now, Lin Jiayao could finally hear what the man in the basement corridor had been shouting.

    B… Boss?

    It was “Boss,” right?

A term for a leader, a person in charge, right?

He was calling the woman carrying her… Boss?

She was the leader of the Voodoo Cult?!

Lin Jiayao’s thoughts raced. She hadn’t expected this.

She had initially assumed this lunatic was just a low-ranking member; she hadn’t sensed any threat from her.

But now… this seemingly ordinary, crazy woman… was the Voodoo Cult leader?

The mysterious, elusive leader no one had ever seen?

    No, that’s impossible…

She thought back, recalling Wu Hejun.

Besides being crazy, there was nothing about her that suggested “leader.”

She just seemed… unhinged, not at all charismatic or commanding.

Wu Hejun carried Lin Jiayao to the living room and placed her on the bar counter near the kitchen.

“Mian, Amian… how are you feeling? Please, say something… don’t scare me…”

She sat down in front of Lin Jiayao, gazing at her with a disturbingly intense affection.

“Boss…” Seeing her like this, the goateed man didn’t dare address her so casually. He stepped back and quietly closed the villa’s door.

At least prevent the Boss from taking that thing outside.

Lin Jiayao, snapping out of her shock, realized the extraction point was only a few dozen meters away.

It was likely just outside the villa, across the street.

But the curtains were drawn, and it was dark outside; she couldn’t see.

She had to get past this… Boss lady.

There was no other way to reach the extraction point.

Looking at the lovestruck Wu Hejun, Lin Jiayao gently shook her head, trying to convey that she was no longer afraid.

Still sticking to her plan: speak only when necessary.

“Mian… what’s wrong? Why aren’t you saying anything?” Seeing “Mian” remain silent, Wu Hejun seemed anxious, her eyes filled with concern. “Don’t you remember me? It’s Jun… You used to call me Junjun, remember?”

Wu Hejun reminisced, but Lin Jiayao only had fragmented memories of Nangong Mian, not the full picture, so she remained silent.

Finally, unable to bear it any longer, Wu Hejun grabbed “Nangong Mian’s” shoulders and shook her gently.

“You don’t remember me, do you? You really don’t remember me?”

“Please, Mian, say my name, just once, please… I’ve waited so long… just to hear you say my name…”

Lin Jiayao felt the grip on her shoulders tightening, almost crushing her.

    This woman is truly insane!

If I don’t say something, she’ll tear me apart.

    Lin Jiayao spoke hesitantly.

    “Wu… Hejun?”

She didn’t use the nickname, just her full name, to be safe.

Perhaps the nickname was a trap.

As expected, hearing her weak voice, Wu Hejun froze, tears streaming down her face.

But the next second, her sorrowful expression vanished, replaced by a blank mask.

Tears continued to flow, but her demeanor had completely changed.

As if she were a different person.

“You heard that?” she murmured, wiping away her tears, standing up.

And strangely, her Mandarin was now much clearer, without the local Sizhou accent.

This abrupt shift stunned Lin Jiayao. The goateed man by the door, however, showed no surprise.

    “Snap—”

“Brother.” Without turning around, Wu Hejun snapped her fingers, seemingly addressing her subordinate.

    She took off her gloves?

Lin Jiayao, ignoring the strange change in her behavior, opened her mouth and released a cloud of red spores.

But the goateed man quickly pressed a button by the door, shattering the protective glass cover, and water sprayed from the ceiling.

The spores, hitting the water mist, were washed away, unable to reach Wu Hejun.

And Wu Hejun, as if having anticipated this, calmly removed her blood-and-brain-splattered hazmat suit and helmet, took a rubber band from her pocket, and tied up her messy hair.

As she did this, she continued to murmur.

“Junjun, your wish has been granted. You can rest now, let me and Wu handle things outside.”

Then, her expression suddenly twisted, her previous calm replaced by a snarl. “I told you to call me V! V, leader of the Voodoo Cult! Not Wu, you bitch!”

And then, just as quickly, her expression softened, her voice a whimper. “Okay… Xiaolian…”

Lin Jiayao’s eye twitched as she watched the woman’s rapidly shifting expressions, her muttering.

    Multiple personalities?

    Chapter 99: City of Voodoo

    “Slap—”
    “Slap—”
    “Slap—”

On the viewing platform overlooking the sports field at the Qingzhou University camp, the rhythmic “slapping” sounds echoed in the darkness.

After a long while, a soft voice broke the silence.

    “So many mosquitoes, Sister.”

    “I know… why aren’t they biting you?”

    “Awakened blood is sweeter.”

    “Maybe… wait, but you’re Awakened too. Strange…”

Lin Xiwan swatted at the annoying mosquitoes buzzing around her.

Perhaps because their previous camp hadn’t been near any fields or grassy areas, now, sitting beside the cultivated land, she felt like she was being swarmed.

Strangely, the mosquitoes only seemed interested in her, ignoring Lin Jiayao completely.

Perhaps mosquito preferences really did change after the apocalypse.

What Lin Xiwan didn’t know was that her sister’s “Awakened blood is sweeter” theory had been personally tested… no, A4 had personally tested it.

To mutated creatures, whether zombies or animals, blood with blood crystals was more “attractive.”

Not that it actually tasted sweeter, but the blood crystals enhanced the scent, drawing them in.

Mosquitoes were among the few species that hadn’t zombified; they stored blood crystals without absorbing them.

In the early days of the outbreak, they had helped spread the infection.

But now, five years later, most people had developed some immunity, so mosquitoes were barely a threat.

They could even be… harvested for blood crystals. A thousand mosquitoes yielded about 1g.

“I’m a little tired,” Lin Jiayao said, leaning against her sister’s shoulder. “Let’s go back.”

    “Okay!”

Lin Jiayao knew her sister would endure the mosquito bites as long as she didn’t complain.

She didn’t want her sister to suffer, so she decided it was time to go back.

And after evolving Vigor to Lv.2, her mental strength was recovering faster, no longer as drained after logging in.

She even checked the Hideout, hoping to upgrade the Control Center now that she had Vigor Lv.2.

But unfortunately, there were no new facilities, and she couldn’t upgrade the existing ones.

The once lively system seemed stagnant now.

「Perhaps the host should consider whether they are simply too weak.」

A system prompt appeared, as if reading her mind.

Lin Jiayao didn’t bother arguing with the system. She was just thinking out loud; she was actually quite satisfied with its current functions.

Lin Xiwan lifted her sister, preparing to return to their dorm.

But this time, she didn’t take the same path. They’d only been out for ten minutes; those… activities… would still be ongoing.

The campus was built against a hillside, roughly a “?” shape, the hill at the center of the question mark.

This meant that to return to the dormitory from the sports field, they would have to pass through that area again, unless they took a detour through the surrounding streets or over the hill.

But Lin Xiwan had already figured out a shortcut.

    “Yao, hold on tight.”

She smiled at her sister in the moonlight.

After her sister’s arms were securely around her neck, Lin Xiwan looked at the seven-story teaching building and started counting down.

    “3…”
    “2…”
    “1!”

    “Crack—”
    “Thump—”

Blood crystal veins glowed on her chest and legs. With a powerful heartbeat that cracked the concrete beneath her feet, she leaped, sending debris flying, landing on a fourth-floor window ledge, then, using the air conditioning units as footholds, easily reached the roof.

    “Hoo…”

Lin Jiayao’s arms tightened around her sister’s neck, the sudden drop and ascent a momentary thrill, like riding a roller coaster.

But being held tightly by her sister was far more reassuring than any roller coaster safety harness.

Seeming to sense her sister’s slight fear, Lin Xiwan smiled.

If she wasn’t worried about the noise, she would have jumped straight to the seventh floor.

“Exciting, wasn’t it?” She asked, squeezing her sister’s shoulder.

“It was okay,” Lin Jiayao replied honestly.

If her sister had done this a day ago, she might have screamed.

But after experiencing A4’s body, this wasn’t so thrilling.

In terms of mobility, A4 was the best.

    “Hold on tight then.”

Hearing her sister’s nonchalant reply, Lin Xiwan’s competitive spirit stirred.

She took a running leap towards another teaching building.

She had planned this shortcut earlier.

The teaching buildings were close together, less than ten meters apart, perfect for rooftop parkour.

And up here, only the wind in her ears, no distractions from below.

As they leaped between buildings, she felt her sister, previously just holding her neck, now pressing her face against her chest.

    Scared, huh?

Thinking this, Lin Xiwan slowed down slightly, not wanting to frighten her sister too much.

At a slower pace, it took a few minutes to reach their dormitory building.

After jumping down from the roof, Lin Jiayao finally lifted her head and looked at her sister.

    So windy…

The wind from their rooftop run had whipped against her face; she’d had to bury it in her sister’s chest.

But her sister seemed to have interpreted her action as fear.

Back in their room, Lin Xiwan closed the door with her foot and gently placed her sister on the bed.

    “So, how was it? Exciting?”

She looked at her sister, still slightly out of breath.

    Exciting? The rooftop jumps?

Lin Jiayao finally understood her sister’s earlier playfulness.

She’d been trying to scare her… but it hadn’t worked.

Not wanting to disappoint her, she shook her head.

“Very scary. Don’t do that again,” she said, her lips trembling slightly, feigning distress.

“Okay, okay, Sister will be more careful next time~” Lin Xiwan, seeing her sister’s cute, slightly pouty expression, couldn’t resist and playfully rubbed her cheeks.

Only when her sister’s gaze turned slightly reproachful did she stop.

Her sister’s earlier response had given Lin Jiayao a strange sense of… déjà vu.

As if she, having experienced far more thrilling things, was now indulging her sister’s clumsy attempts at playfulness, pretending to be scared.

Well… it was a somewhat strange analogy, but it felt… accurate.

Of course, this didn’t mean her sister’s abilities weren’t impressive.

If her sister punched A4 with full force, Lin Jiayao, remembering the fate of the monstrous bird, imagined A4’s body would shatter.

A4 was a classic glass cannon: high mobility, high attack, low defense.

Perhaps she could have Mask collect more Armored zombie blood crystals in Xin City for A4 to consume; maybe it would develop some defensive abilities.

“Can you sleep now?” Lin Xiwan asked, picking up the fan and gently fanning her sister.

Even without air conditioning, if she fanned her sister constantly, she might be able to sleep.

    That was her plan.

“No need,” Lin Jiayao said, taking her sister’s hand and pulling it towards her. “Come sleep with me.”

Having woken her sister twice, she felt guilty.

“I’m not tired, I’ll sleep later,” Lin Xiwan smiled, looking at her considerate sister.

Seeing her sister’s refusal, Lin Jiayao resorted to a rarely used, but highly effective tactic.

    Acting cute.

She turned, tugged at her sister’s clothes, and whispered, “I want Sister to sleep with me…”

Her soft voice made Lin Xiwan’s heart melt.

“Okay, okay, I’ll sleep with you.” She put down the fan, took off her shoes and socks, climbed into bed, and gently hugged her sister.

    “Goodnight.”

Lin Jiayao wrapped her arms around her sister’s waist. “Goodnight.”

“Goodnight~” Lin Xiwan kissed her sister’s forehead, habitually wrapping her legs around hers and placing her hand on her waist.

Her hand always seemed to find its way under her sister’s shirt while she slept.

    Strange.

This time, Lin Jiayao kept her distance from her sister’s chest, having learned her lesson.

She didn’t want to be caught off guard again, logging out from a zombie battle only to find herself nestled comfortably in her sister’s embrace.

She shifted slightly, finding a more comfortable position, inhaled her sister’s comforting scent, and closed her eyes.

    「No.1: [Mask] (Available for login)」
    「No.2: 🌐 (Available for login)」
    「No.3: [Goldie] (Available for login)」
    「No.4: [A4] (Available for login)」

All four slots were available, but she chose number 2.

Whether investigating the Voodoo Cult or going to Kun City, she needed a scout, it was just a matter of priority.

And investigating the Voodoo Cult’s plans was more important right now.

If they weren’t planning to push further into Guangdong Province, then she and her sister could safely stay at the Qingzhou camp and build their strength.

If the Voodoo Cult was planning to move south, then she would have to “terminate” the second zombie and send a new one to Kun City after the 12-hour cooldown.

If Kun City was safe, she would wait for Huayibai, who was slowly making her way towards her, and then they would go to Kun City together.

As for using the second zombie to wipe out the Voodoo Cult…

That thought didn’t even cross her mind.

A freshly spawned zombie, with no time to evolve, against the entire Voodoo Cult?

    Impossible.

Even sending all three of her other zombies wouldn’t be enough.

The Voodoo Cult had been able to withstand Survivor’s Light for so long; they must have at least one B-rank Awakened.

She remembered the B-rank Awakened from Survivor’s Light, the one who had collapsed an entire building with a single attack, a force of nature.

A B-rank Awakened wasn’t something she could handle right now.

Lin Jiayao selected the second zombie slot.

The other options dimmed, the virtual map beside the second zombie expanding, and the familiar world map appeared.

If the Voodoo Cult diaries were correct, their headquarters was in Chongyu City.

For an organization to establish a base in a large city, they would have had to clear out most of the zombies, like Survivor’s Light.

Otherwise, normal operations would be severely hampered.

And yet, Chongyu City was available as a login location.

This meant there was a problem within the Voodoo Cult, or the zombies there had abilities even the Voodoo Cult couldn’t handle.

Without further thought, she selected Chongyu City.

The light blue map shattered, and her consciousness was plunged into darkness.

In the darkness, she slowly opened her…

    No eyes?

Although blind, she felt a familiar sensation of control.

    This is…

    Fungal tendrils?

Before she could process it, a torrent of memories flooded her mind.

    And a system prompt.

Inherited Evolution: [Mimic Fruiting Body Lv.1 (Gold)]

    “This is…”

The familiar sensation made her realize what had happened.

The zombie she had logged into in Chongyu City… was a fungal zombie!

She focused on processing the memories.

With her mental strength boosted to Lv.2, the influx of memories was no longer unbearable.

    A… college student’s memories?

A quiet, beautiful young woman, with a pleasant-sounding name: Nangong Mian.

It sounded like the name of a romance novel protagonist.

    The memories were… ordinary.

The only unusual thing was that she had a childhood best friend who had been admitted to a mental institution during middle school.

She had visited her friend a few times but had been bitten and injured each time.

Her once close friend, now a raving lunatic, would lunge at her, biting her neck and screaming about being together forever, whenever she let her guard down.

Following her family’s warnings and pleas, she had stopped visiting.

After entering university, she’d heard rumors that no one else had visited her friend since her own last visit.

And that her friend’s condition had worsened. She could barely remember her friend’s name or face now; just a fleeting memory from her past.

The last memory was of a mushroom garden on the university campus, the sky blood-red, red crystals falling like snow.

A poor soul, infected at the start of the outbreak, the surrounding fungi also mutating from the blood crystal infection.

After reviewing the memories, Lin Jiayao dismissed them; they were useless.

She controlled the fungal tendrils, expertly splitting and reforming, using the remaining blood crystals to generate a white stem, a blood-red, umbrella-like cap unfolding at its tip.

As the crystal-like cap opened, she finally saw her surroundings.

    “Pitter-patter—”

Water droplets landed on her cap, blurring her vision.

But she could still make out the general shape of her surroundings in the dim light.

    Inside a room?

    A large metal door?

It felt like… a prison cell?

    Was this… an experimental zombie?

This was the first thought that came to mind.

The Voodoo Cult’s leadership was conducting experiments on fungal zombies? No wonder they wore so much protective gear!

Lin Jiayao now understood who had likely spread the fungus in Survivor’s Light.

It was definitely the Voodoo Cult!

    “Click—”

    The door opened.

Lin Jiayao couldn’t hear anything, but she sensed the change in light.

She turned her cap towards the doorway and saw a tall, thin figure in a hazmat suit and a full-face mask entering.

She saw the figure freeze for a moment, then rush towards her.

    Danger!

As Lin Jiayao tried to move away, the figure scooped her up and brought her close to its face.

Lin Jiayao couldn’t hear what it was saying, but the bulging eyes behind the mask showed its… excitement.

    Excited… about what?

Because the experimental subject had developed a fruiting body?

Just as Lin Jiayao was considering restarting this zombie, she noticed the woman’s face behind the mask.

A wide grin, hair plastered to her face, her pale, gaunt features accentuating her wide, almost bulging eyes…

The image of the frenzied woman slowly overlapped with the memory of the “best friend,” a sense of foreboding washing over Lin Jiayao.

Perhaps this fungal zombie wasn’t an experimental subject…

Perhaps it had been imprisoned here by its insane best friend… even after it became a zombie… and that lunatic… was a high-ranking member of the Voodoo Cult.

Well… no need to restart then.

Lin Jiayao glanced at the extraction point, a few hundred meters away, but only an hour left on the timer.

She needed to gain this woman’s trust and escape this room within that hour.

Perhaps she could actually disrupt the Voodoo Cult from within.

  • Sickly Girl Doesn’t Die in Zombie Simulator 98p2

Chapter 98: The Moon is Beautiful p2

After the countdown, darkness, and then the black settlement space.

Goldie’s holographic projection, its long tentacles coiled, its shorter tentacles dangling, loomed over her, its expressionless face staring down.

Beside it were the familiar safehouse and warehouse, six blood crystal stones in the safehouse.

She transferred the six crystals to the warehouse. After deducting the cost of the Combat Stimulants and the crystal she’d fed to Goldie earlier, she now had nineteen in the warehouse, plus the six she’d just brought back, a total of twenty-five.

Looking at the neatly arranged crystals, a feeling of satisfaction washed over her.

I should upgrade the warehouse soon, 10×10 might not be enough for much longer.

    Her ambitions were growing.

But she couldn’t afford to be truly ambitious yet. Although Goldie had devoured two Hive Zombies, she still knew very little about Wisconsin.

Perhaps next time, she could capture a lone human or a weaker Awakened and extract their memories.

She had accessed the memories of both An Xiaoxi and Xie Yi. One had been a top student, the other had worked for a foreign architectural firm; she could now understand and speak English.

Goldie had nothing of value on her; Lin Jiayao wasn’t desperate enough to harvest her tentacles for blood crystals yet.

She had twenty-five blood crystals; she wasn’t that poor.

    She exited the settlement space.

A sudden wave of dizziness, a feeling of suffocation, almost made her black out. If it weren’t for the Robust evolutions, she would have fainted.

She quickly realized what was happening and moved her head back slightly.

    “Gasp—”

After a few deep breaths, she felt better.

Before logging into Goldie, she had been lying with her face buried in her sister’s… cleavage.

And her sister, perhaps sensing her movement, had pulled her closer, her chin resting on Lin Jiayao’s head.

Almost suffocating her with her… bosom.

As she moved her head back, she gently nudged her sister’s chin.

This small movement woke Lin Xiwan, who was a light sleeper.

    “Yao…?”

She nuzzled her sister’s head with her nose and lips, as if asking what was wrong.

This was the second time Lin Jiayao had woken her; she’d been enjoying the scent of her freshly washed hair.

It seemed her sister’s sleep quality wasn’t very good lately.

“Hmm?” Lin Jiayao looked up at her sister in the darkness.

“Did you sleep too much earlier and can’t sleep now…?” Lin Xiwan removed her hand from under her sister’s shirt, where it had been resting on her waist, and gently pinched her cheek.

    “A little,” Lin Jiayao replied.

“Ha—” Lin Xiwan yawned, rubbed her eyes, and then, her forehead resting against her sister’s, asked softly, “Want to go for a walk outside then?”

Even though she was sleepy, if her sister couldn’t sleep, she wouldn’t either.

With her sister’s immobile legs, if she fell asleep, Lin Jiayao would be stuck lying there, awake, until morning.

    That would be torture.

Better to take her outside for some fresh air, look at the moon, and tire her out a bit.

It was still early evening, probably around ten o’clock. A little activity, and perhaps her sister would feel sleepy.

    “Sure.”

Lin Jiayao, exhausted after the battle with Goldie, readily agreed.

Although the cooldown timer for her second zombie slot had ended, she didn’t want to log in yet.

She was mentally drained, and besides a short nap at noon, she hadn’t had any real rest.

She would log in later, after resting.

Logging into a new zombie was too unpredictable; she needed to be alert.

Rest was the priority, and she could also check the evolution options from Goldie’s extraction.

    “Heave-ho—”

Lin Xiwan sat up, pushing aside the blankets.

After getting out of bed, she looked at her sister. “Should I carry you, or push you in the wheelchair?”

“Carry me,” Lin Jiayao said. “The wheelchair is too noisy.”

The wheelchair Wan Zi had given them had rusty axles, making a loud “screech” with every turn.

Tolerable during the day, but earsplitting at night.

She didn’t want to wake the entire building.

    “Okay~”

Lifting her lightweight sister wasn’t difficult. Lin Xiwan easily scooped her up in a princess carry and headed for the door.

While being carried, Lin Jiayao rested her head against her sister’s chest and closed her eyes.

In the darkness, she looked at the system prompt.

    「Please retain your evolution」
「1、【Cerebrovore Lv.1 (Purple): Allows you to store consumed brains within your body, enhancing your mental strength】」
「2、【Crystal Storage Tentacles Lv.1 (Purple): Allows you to generate tentacles to store excess liquefied blood crystals. The tentacles can also store brains】」
「3、【Vigor Lv.2 (Gray): Increases your mental and physical recovery speed】」

After reading through the options, Lin Jiayao opened her eyes.

Ugh, why were Goldie’s evolutions all so… gruesome?

Each one drastically altered her appearance.

Hive Skin, Crystal Storage Tentacles, Cerebrovore…

    Grow tentacles? Or eat brains?

The first option brought back the unpleasant memory of swimming through that “sea of tofu brains.”

Only thanks to her practice in the Training Grounds had she been able to stomach it.

She immediately dismissed the first two and chose Lv.2 Vigor.

Although Goldie’s abilities weren’t very appealing, she couldn’t abandon her yet.

Goldie was currently her only source of mental enhancements; creating another Hive Zombie would be too time-consuming and difficult.

After selecting the evolution, Lin Jiayao felt a refreshing coolness wash over her, a jolt of energy.

And like before, with the Vigor and Robust evolutions, she briefly felt a sensation in her legs, a faint tingling.

Perhaps, if she continued evolving, she really could walk again.

    “Hoo—”

The cool night breeze felt refreshing against her skin, her vision unusually sharp, her mind clear.

“So refreshing.” Lin Xiwan, sensing her sister looking at her, smiled. “Do you hear that?”

She had been talking to her sister as they walked, but then, she’d heard a strange sound from the bushes beside the path.

    “Slap—Slap—Slap—”

She frowned, her mind cycling through the types of zombies that could produce such sounds.

“Yao, activate your ability and check what’s ahead,” she said, lowering her head.

    “Okay.”

Still in her sister’s arms, Bone Spike Lurker’s range was limited; she hadn’t heard the faint sounds yet. She activated Blood Crystal Vision and looked in the direction her sister indicated.

“It’s all black, Sister.” She reported honestly and listened intently.

“You can’t see anything?” Lin Xiwan, puzzled, continued towards the sports field.

Perhaps it was just insects rustling in the leaves?

As they walked closer, she heard other sounds.

    “Slap—Slap—Slap—”

    “Mm~ Ah~ Mm~”

    “Slow down… mm—”

    “Oh—”

    “Slap, slap, slap—”

Realization dawned. Lin Xiwan’s face flushed crimson. Thankfully, the moonlight wasn’t bright; her sister wouldn’t see her blush.

Since the men’s and women’s dormitories were separated, and residents weren’t allowed to enter other buildings, couples, or anyone else seeking… intimacy… had to resort to the outdoors, but they couldn’t leave the camp grounds.

    “Cover your ears, Yao.”

“Okay.” Lin Jiayao, also hearing the sounds, covered her ears and blinked at her sister, noticing her quickened pace.

    Is she that embarrassed?

Just as Lin Xiwan was hurrying past, a flashlight beam illuminated them.

The light made the activities in the bushes pause, and Lin Xiwan felt countless eyes on them.

    Her face burned even hotter.

“Oh… sorry, I heard quick footsteps and thought… never mind, just patrolling, carry on.” The middle-aged man with the flashlight scratched his head, making way for them. “Oh, you’re the new sisters, right? Just as pretty as they said. Don’t be afraid, Uncle’s not interested in women. Don’t run so fast, you’ll fall. There are some empty spots over there. Need some oil? Nail clippers? We also grow pineapples in the camp; want some?”

Lin Xiwan, practically running, ignored the man’s rambling, which only grew louder as they moved away.

And the flashlight beam followed them, as if he was helpfully lighting their way.

Finally, practically sprinting now, blood crystal veins appearing on her neck from the exertion, Lin Xiwan reached the sports field.

Reaching the stands, she stopped, panting, not from exhaustion but from the rapid beating of her heart.

At least there weren’t any… those kinds of sounds here.

The sports field had been tilled, looking like a vast farm from the stands, a calming sight.

Lin Xiwan sat down, placed her sister beside her, her arm around her waist to steady her.

After a while, her face still flushed, she stammered, “Yao… don’t… don’t mind what he said…”

“What?” Lin Jiayao blinked. “That uncle was so nice.”

“Ah…” Looking at her sister’s innocent expression, Lin Xiwan realized that her pure-hearted sister had no idea what those sounds meant.

No need to worry about being misunderstood.

But after tonight, the rumors about them being a couple would probably spread like wildfire throughout the camp.

Especially after she’d carried her sister past that area; there was no way to explain that.

    She wanted to facepalm.

If they wanted to see the stars and the moon, why not just go to the dormitory rooftop?!

“Y-yes… he was very… helpful…” Lin Xiwan said, taking a deep breath.

“But we could really use those things.” Lin Jiayao looked at her sister seriously.

“Huh?” Lin Xiwan stared at her sister, bewildered.

“Don’t you want them, Sister?” Lin Jiayao tilted her head, seeing her sister’s strange expression. “We haven’t cut our nails in ages; we’ve been using knives.”

“And I don’t like corn. Pineapples would be a good source of vitamins and nutrients.”

Lin Xiwan stared at her, speechless.

    So that’s what she meant…

Looking at her sister’s innocent eyes, Lin Xiwan lowered her head and covered her face, ashamed of her earlier thoughts.

It’s all the fault of those yuri novels she’d read before the apocalypse, filling her head with… ideas…

And if her sister asked why she was so embarrassed, what would she say?!

    She wanted to disappear.

The thought of the camp rumors, the whispers and knowing glances… it was depressing.

She didn’t want to be the subject of gossip.

    “Sister.”

A warm head rested on her shoulder. She looked up.

“There’s a moon,” her sister said, pointing towards the sky.

Lin Xiwan looked up and saw the moon, half-hidden behind clouds, a soft glow in the night sky.

Feeling her sister’s warmth beside her, her embarrassment faded.

    “Yes.”

Even if the rumors spread, her sister wouldn’t care.

She would always be there for her, and she would always be there for her sister.

Of that much, she was certain.

She tilted her head, resting it against her sister’s, the two of them looking at the moon in comfortable silence.

“The moon is beautiful,” Lin Xiwan said.

“And so round,” Lin Jiayao added.

Chapter 98: The Moon is Beautiful p1

After the Blood Crystal Stimulant surged through her body, scarlet veins pulsed outwards from her heart, spreading like a spiderweb towards her brain and limbs.

She plunged into the swarm of red insects, charging towards the Corn Cob.

Fueled by the stimulant, her speed rivaled that of a Sprinter.

Red insects crawled all over her, but their sharp mandibles couldn’t penetrate her skin.

A thin, golden, gelatinous layer, although not offering much protection, was enough to deter the insects, preventing them from easily biting through.

Covered in insects, relying on the vision of her airborne green insect to see, Lin Jiayao observed her own frenzied charge from a third-person perspective, like playing a video game.

Unlike a game, however, the insects were now biting through the protective layer, their mandibles tearing at her skin, the pain very real.

    “Click—”

Her left tentacles pulled the pins from all four grenades simultaneously.

Running across the rotting wooden floor and the shattered seats, Lin Jiayao leaped towards the Corn Cob on the stage.

    “WOOO—”

The Corn Cob, sensing danger, emitted a sound like a train whistle, its hundred legs scrambling sideways as it tried to turn.

And the insects on Lin Jiayao, agitated by the sound, buzzed frantically, their wings beating against her skin, desperately trying to burrow inside.

    Trying to escape… too late!

Twisting mid-air, abandoning balance, she flung out her left tentacles.

The golden tentacles, wrapped around the grenades, extended, reaching towards the slow-turning Corn Cob.

    “Thud—”

A tentacle, its tip a grenade, burrowed into the fist-sized wound on the Corn Cob’s side.

The golden insect that had been clinging to the wound’s edge, widening it, was crushed between Lin Jiayao’s tentacle and the Corn Cob’s gelatinous flesh, shattering like glass, its remains dissolving into a gram of blood crystals.

Lin Jiayao’s other tentacles also probed the wound, widening it, shoving in more grenades, bits of brain and pus spilling out.

Before she could insert the last grenade, the five-second fuses detonated.

    “BOOM—”

The explosions sent smoke and shrapnel flying, clearing the insects within a three-meter radius. Lin Jiayao, landing, was thrown back by the blast.

A shard of shrapnel sliced through one of her tentacles, the golden, viscous blood flowing freely before quickly clotting, thanks to the Blood Crystal Combat Stimulant.

Almost instantly, she scrambled to her feet, seemingly oblivious to the pain of her severed tentacle and the bleeding wounds, and lunged towards the now-larger wound on the Corn Cob.

    “Wooo—”
    “Wooo—”

The explosions had not only widened the wound but also blown off several of its legs on that side. It swayed, tilting towards her.

And the force of the internal explosions had liquefied the brains in its lower half, a gruesome mixture of pus, gore, and severed red tendrils spilling out.

Before it could collapse completely, Lin Jiayao had reached the wound, diving into the gushing stream of brain matter and pus.

She gripped the Corn Cob’s gelatinous flesh with her right hand and pulled herself inside.

    “Thump—”

The Corn Cob collapsed, its weight pinning Lin Jiayao within, stemming the flow of gore, completely engulfing her.

    “Gurgle, gurgle—”

Submerged in the viscous fluid, Lin Jiayao quickly exhaled, emptying her lungs.

Her human instincts still made her breathe, but most zombies, modified by blood crystals, didn’t need oxygen, unlike the Sprinters with their enhanced lungs.

She hadn’t realized this during her first simulation in the Training Grounds and had choked on the “brain pus,” the experience so revolting she’d immediately deactivated her senses.

Now, having learned her lesson, she quickly expelled the air from her lungs, sealed her nose, mouth, and ears with golden mucus, and then extended a protective layer of gelatinous membrane over her eyelids.

Surrounded by a sea of white and gray brain matter, Lin Jiayao opened her eyes.

She could feel the red insects that had been crawling on her, and even those she’d ingested, dissolving into their original blood crystal form upon contact with the pus, absorbed by the Corn Cob.

And her white scout insects outside saw a large number of zombies, breaking through her pheromone barrier, their confused state gone, swarming towards the theater.

But the Corn Cob could no longer control them; even its red insects were falling from the sky, lifeless.

The invading zombies, seemingly forgetting their purpose, started picking up and consuming the fallen insects, some even reaching the stage and lapping up the spilled brain matter.

Lin Jiayao moved through the white pus, her hands searching, until she found it: the thick, central red tendril.

The main artery, the one that branched out, connecting all the brains.

    “Gurgle—Gurgle—”

    “Wooo—”

She gripped the thick tendril and pulled, the Corn Cob wailing in agony.

Neither the Corn Cob itself, nor any human, could have imagined this method of attack… entering its body and destroying its core.

The intense mental interference would have incapacitated anyone who got close, their trembling hands unable even to aim, their only option to flee.

Only Lin Jiayao, having practiced extensively in the Training Grounds, controlling Goldie, immune to the pheromones, could attempt such a risky strategy.

But her hands, covered in the slippery fluid, couldn’t tear the tendril.

And the insects she summoned were instantly dissolved in the pus. She’d already released all her insects, and she didn’t have any blood crystals to replenish them.

Unless she drank all this brain pus… which, for a zombie, was a nutrient-rich, blood crystal-laden delicacy, the perfect breeding ground for insects.

    “Gurgle—”

Having no other choice, she pulled herself closer to the tendril, opened her mouth, ignoring the pus flooding her nose and mouth, and bit down.

The tendril was as thick as Goldie’s two hands combined. Her small mouth couldn’t even bite through a quarter of it, even stretched to its limit.

Perhaps starting from the thinner end would work, but that wouldn’t destroy the core; she had to sever it at the base.

Lin Jiayao wrapped her entire body around the central tendril and bit down again, tearing with all her might.

    “Squish—”

The tendril tore, a stream of red, liquefied blood crystals gushing out, staining the white pus crimson.

    “WOOO—WOOO—WAAAA—”

The Corn Cob, feeling the excruciating pain, thrashed violently, spraying gore everywhere.

The rotting wooden stage, unable to withstand the strain, collapsed, wood and dust raining down.

Lin Jiayao, still inside, breathed a sigh of relief.

A small opening was all she needed.

This blood crystal fluid was essential to the Hive Zombie, used for creating insects and emitting pheromones.

After tearing the tendril, she pinched the opening slightly, reducing the flow.

    “Gurgle, gurgle—”

Spitting out the pus from her mouth and nose, she brought her mouth to the opening, her teeth clamping down on the tendril as she sucked.

    “Gulp—”

A torrent of blood crystal fluid flowed into her mouth, down her throat, filling her stomach and even her lungs.

Goldie’s body was also rapidly absorbing the nutrients.

But the absorption rate couldn’t keep up with the influx. Her stomach and intestines filled, her stomach distending, then rupturing.

Her entire body had become a container for the blood crystal fluid, her bones cracking under the pressure, her body swelling.

If it weren’t for the protective translucent membrane, her skin would have burst.

Lin Jiayao was also frantically using the excess fluid to generate insects and regenerate her left arm.

Her severed arm rapidly regrew, the golden tentacles extending and thickening.

The previously translucent tentacles were now blood-red, filled with the crimson fluid.

Soon, the hives within her body were full.

But she couldn’t release the insects; they would be dissolved in the pus.

She could only let her body continue to swell, her skin stretching thin and translucent, becoming a “red fatty” in a matter of seconds.

The Corn Cob thrashed, its struggles only hastening its demise.

Its body withered, its pheromones weakening, the controlled zombies losing their direction.

They started moving towards the Corn Cob, drawn by the scent of its blood crystal-rich flesh and fluids, the perfect zombie meal.

Some had even started to tear at its gelatinous skin.

Soon, a new Hive Zombie would emerge from this feast, taking control of the horde and consuming the remaining blood crystal fluid and the corpse.

But with Lin Jiayao present, that wouldn’t happen.

    “Thud—”

Lin Jiayao, releasing the drained tendril, pierced the now brittle body of the Corn Cob with her thick left tentacle.

Ripping open a three-meter-wide hole, she rolled out.

Her body was round and swollen, her skin a translucent, golden, gelatinous membrane, filled with glowing red blood crystal fluid.

A red version of the “green fatty,” without the brains and pus.

The yellowish-white brain matter clinging to her slid off her smooth, distended body, her clothes long since shredded.

    “Buzz—”

A swarm of red insects emerged from her eyes and began circling the theater, rapidly spreading her pheromones.

The zombies, those feasting on the corpse and brain matter, stopped, their roars replaced by confused gurgles.

The insects flew outwards, taking control of the Corn Cob’s remaining horde. Only after securing the area did Lin Jiayao examine her own body.

    Ugh…

    A larger “green fatty.”

And she had just evolved; she couldn’t use this blood crystal fluid for another evolution yet.

She tried to roll over and stand, but her limbs couldn’t reach the ground simultaneously. If one hand touched the ground, the other three couldn’t.

With a sigh, she used her thick left tentacle to support her swollen body and slowly inch her way towards the top of the Corn Cob.

She’d only absorbed most of the blood crystal fluid; a significant amount had spilled out, scattered across the stage.

After a while, she gave up.

At this rate, she wouldn’t reach the extraction point until nightfall.

    “Buzz—”

A swarm of green insects emerged from her eye sockets and began collecting the scattered blood crystals, bringing them back and piling them up around her, like diligent little bees.

I’ll call them Little Green Bees, she thought, her body, like a giant ball, supported by a tentacle.

But she soon lost interest in naming things.

Because she felt the blood crystal fluid within her rapidly being… consumed.

    Another evolution?

    Goldie’s body was changing again.

Perhaps because of the excessive amount of blood crystal fluid, it was instinctively transforming into a more efficient storage form.

Her limbs atrophied, her lower body and hands mutating.

Numerous thin tentacles extended from her swollen waist, and as they grew, her body shrank.

As if transferring the blood crystal fluid into the tentacles for storage.

Soon, she was back to the size of a ten-year-old girl.

But her hands had been replaced by several two-finger-thick, translucent golden tentacles.

And her lower body, from the waist down, was now a mass of thicker, golden tentacles, each about the size of her forearm, three to four meters long, some still filled with blood crystal fluid.

    What… Cthulhu?

Lin Jiayao, seeing herself through the eyes of a Little Green Bee, felt a flicker of recognition.

But the feeling quickly faded. Goldie’s face was still the same, her upper body still human.

“At least… it’s better than the ‘green fatty’…”

At least it wasn’t as disgusting.

But to anyone whose… preferences… were tentacles and little girls… this would be a dream come true.

Fortunately, even in the apocalypse, Lin Jiayao’s tastes remained normal; she didn’t find this new form particularly… appealing.

    “Squish—Squish—”

She moved, her tentacles making a sound like someone walking in inflatable shoes.

She reached the pile of blood crystal stones collected by the Little Green Bees, her tentacles picking them up and counting them.

    1, 2, 3… 6.

Besides the crystals still within Goldie’s body, the Corn Cob had yielded six more.

One of them contained a faint, wriggling tentacle, similar to the one from the “green fatty.”

    Now Lin Jiayao understood.

If she wanted to cultivate these American Hive Zombies in China, she could have a Biter or a Nest Zombie consume this crystal and evolve; there was a high probability it would evolve into a Hive Zombie.

Putting the six crystals into the safehouse, Lin Jiayao looked at the surrounding horde.

Almost all the zombies previously controlled by the Corn Cob were now under her control, and she even had some mental capacity to spare.

It seemed one of Goldie’s abilities significantly enhanced her mental strength and control over zombies. She wondered if this ability was selectable.

If so, she could increase her own mental strength simply by absorbing blood crystals.

After ordering a few Sprinters and Hunters to dismember and consume the Corn Cob’s remains, Lin Jiayao left the theater.

The other Biters and Lurkers, following her commands, were now engaged in a frenzied free-for-all, tearing each other apart.

She didn’t need the meager blood crystals from the weak Biters and Lurkers.

To further develop Goldie’s abilities in America, she needed a horde of mutated zombies; then she wouldn’t have to fear other Hive Zombies or humans.

The Corn Cob had controlled a large horde and stored a significant amount of blood crystals, but its own evolution wasn’t particularly advanced; its only attack method was the red insects, easily countered by entering its body.

Lin Jiayao wasn’t sure if there were stronger, more evolved Hive Zombies in this area. She had to be prepared.

Her movement speed was now even slower, so she headed towards the extraction point, not wasting time watching the zombies fight.

Before reaching the sunlight, a faint, golden layer covered her pale skin, reflecting the intensifying rays.

From a distance, she seemed to be surrounded by a faint golden aura, an almost holy glow.

Passing a clothing store, she stopped, picked a clean, white t-shirt, and put it on.

Now, looking at her clothed upper body, ignoring the eyes, Goldie looked like a normal, albeit pale, little girl.

But the tentacles extending from beneath the hem of her shirt and from her sleeves betrayed her true nature.

With great effort, she finally reached a point less than a kilometer from the extraction point.

By now, Sprinters, having finished their gruesome feast, were catching up.

And several Hunters, running low to the ground, were rapidly approaching.

By the time she reached the extraction point at the skyscraper, she was followed by over a hundred mutated zombies.

Nest Zombies, Sprinters, Hunters, even unarmored Armored zombies with exposed bone spikes… every kind imaginable.

A dozen bone insects had already mapped the area within 300 meters, and the Little Green Bees buzzing around her provided a 360-degree view.

With the ever-growing horde and her own slow movement speed, she felt like a “land aircraft carrier.”

    An apt description.

Reaching the extraction point inside the skyscraper, after ordering the zombies to guard the perimeter, she crawled into a store, curled up, and waited.

    [Extracting: 2.1]

  • Sickly Girl Doesn’t Die in Zombie Simulator 97

Chapter 97: The Insect Swarm Loli

After spending four or five minutes in the sewer, getting used to her new body, Lin Jiayao checked the extraction point again.

    「Extraction Time 2:49:22」
    【Extraction Point: 10km】

A short distance, and plenty of time, unlike the fourth zombie, whose speed had resulted in a distant extraction point.

Plenty of time to confront the corn cob.

She looked towards the sunlight filtering through the sewer opening.

She was just outside the beam of light.

This was the first time Goldie had seen sunlight since the rain stopped in China.

She suddenly realized she hadn’t tested Goldie’s resistance to sunlight.

If she was immune, then she would have an advantage against the corn cob.

At least the zombies under its control would be weakened by the sunlight.

Thinking this, she slowly raised her left hand.

Her left arm, now gelatinous, with multiple tentacles, was different from before. The previously thick, green fluid within the tentacles was now a golden, translucent liquid.

A different color, somehow less disgusting.

She touched the sunlight with a tentacle tip. The light passed through the translucent gel, creating a faint, iridescent glow.

Besides making the tentacle shimmer, the sunlight seemed to have no effect.

She then moved closer to the sunlight and extended her right hand.

Before it even reached the light, she felt a sense of foreboding.

But she continued, her hand entering the beam of sunlight.

    “Hiss—”

A wisp of smoke rose from her fingers, a burning sensation.

But before she could retract her hand, tiny golden tendrils emerged from the burned fingertip.

The tendrils writhed, covering her hand like a golden glove.

Now, protected by the “glove,” her hand was unaffected by the sunlight.

She extended her hand further, the golden layer thinning, spreading up her arm and across her body, while her damaged finger continued to exude the gel-like substance.

After about thirty seconds, her entire body was covered in a thin, almost transparent, golden layer.

Now she could move freely in the sunlight.

Standing at the bottom of the sewer maintenance hole, Lin Jiayao flicked her right wrist upwards. The golden tentacles extended, hooking onto the street above and pulling her out.

Emerging from the sewer, she saw the carnage around her.

Scattered bones covered the area within a four or five-meter radius of the maintenance hole, but there were no blood crystals.

    What happened here?

The system’s autopilot after extraction? Or had the corn cob’s subordinates been scavenging here?

She couldn’t tell. She would ask the system later.

Lin Jiayao looked towards the street where she had observed the battle earlier and started walking in the opposite direction of the extraction point.

She wanted to see who had cleaned up the battlefield.

If it were humans, then she wouldn’t bother with the corn cob; if the humans had scavenged its territory, it meant they had defeated it.

If it were zombies, then she might be able to find some usable weapons.

Distinguishing between the two was easy; just check for any discarded firearms or ammunition.

After the evolution, Goldie’s previously unsteady legs were now strong and agile, the deep bite marks completely healed.

But her clothes, torn and shredded in the previous battle, were barely hanging on.

Passing a clothing store, she picked a large, round-necked t-shirt and discarded her rags.

Finding well-fitting clothes was difficult. A4 could cover her body with scales, but Goldie could only generate a thin, almost transparent layer of “skin,” practically the same as being naked.

The black t-shirt, far too large for her small frame, hung down like a dress, surprisingly practical.

But it wouldn’t last long in a fight.

Moving faster than before, Lin Jiayao quickly reached the devastated street where the battle had taken place.

The scattered limbs and gore were gone, replaced by charred and yellowed bones, smoking in the sunlight.

The bodies had been completely consumed.

And she also saw several empty ammo vests and a burned, twisted armored vehicle on the ground.

As if crushed by a five-meter-tall Armored zombie.

Seeing the scattered firearms, Lin Jiayao could guess who had scavenged the battlefield.

She started searching through the debris.

Most of the firearms were crushed, but she found a few grenades in the torn ammo vests.

She chose a relatively undamaged beige vest, stuffed the four grenades inside, discarded the magazines, and put on the vest.

After searching a bit more, she found a loaded FN-57 with armor-piercing rounds but nothing else usable.

She put the pistol in the vest, stood up, and headed towards where the horde had come from.

She vaguely remembered where she had triggered the Hive Zombie’s territorial boundary, the overturned cars at the intersection a distinct landmark.

Following her memories, after about two kilometers, she slowed down.

Her enhanced vision had spotted something ahead: several cars blocking the road like a barricade.

And on top of one of them stood a swaying, all-black Sprinter.

Its dark muscles seemed to protect it from the sun’s rays.

If Lin Jiayao remembered correctly, there had been a Biter standing on that car the other night.

They were clearly placed there deliberately as lookouts.

As she observed the Sprinter, it seemed to notice her blood crystal aura.

It turned its head and opened its mouth, about to roar.

    “Buzz—”

Lin Jiayao’s eyes instantly shifted, the surfaces with the holes rotating into position.

Three golden insects, their wings a blur, shot out from the holes, embedding themselves in the Sprinter’s throat and eyes.

The Sprinter, about to roar, suddenly convulsed violently, blood oozing from its orifices.

Then, as if its strength had been drained, it slowly knelt down and then tumbled off the car, its face hitting the ground.

Blood, pus, bone fragments, and yellowish brain matter oozed from the holes in its face, forming a disgusting puddle.

The three golden insects emerged from the gore, their bodies clean, their wings buzzing as they shook off the viscous fluid, and then, like golden streaks, flew back into Lin Jiayao’s eyes.

From launch to return, just seven seconds.

From Lin Jiayao’s perspective, it was just a flash of gold from her eyes and then a quick return.

The three insects, having consumed the Sprinter’s 5g of blood crystals, like bees returning to the hive with their nectar, deposited the crystals in the hives within her eyes, nourishing the countless eggs waiting to hatch.

Lin Jiayao continued walking. This time, eliminating the “scout” hadn’t attracted more zombies.

This would make it easier to find the corn cob Hive Zombie.

Something that large, almost ten meters tall, couldn’t hide easily.

The lack of footsteps meant it was stationary.

    “Click—”

Lin Jiayao’s eyes shifted again, the single large hole now facing forward.

Her eyes bulged slightly, as if something was trying to emerge.

Fueled by the blood crystals, an egg was rapidly forming inside the hive connected to her eye.

A small, sickle-shaped bone claw emerged, followed by a white, triangular, eyeless head, a long, segmented abdomen, and then damp wings.

    “Buzz—”

Two white insects, almost as long as an adult’s index finger, resembling praying mantises, crawled out of her eyes, too small to fully extend, and clung to her face, their wings buzzing.

They unfolded their almost skeletal wings and, hovering a meter above the ground, extended thin, needle-like bone spikes from their abdomens, which dragged along the ground.

As the bone needles touched the ground, a detailed map of the surrounding terrain, within a fifty-meter radius, formed in Lin Jiayao’s mind, as if she’d activated Lv.3 Bone Spike Lurker.

These bone insects were like scouts, exploring the area for her.

Their only weakness was their inability to hear, but their advantage was their ease of production, like warding totems in a game.

Feeling she had enough blood crystal energy, Lin Jiayao summoned another bone insect, sending the three in different directions.

After deploying her scouts, her eyes shifted again, revealing the six medium-sized holes.

Twelve red insects, similar to the ones summoned by the corn cob, emerged, also flying off in different directions.

These red insects carried Goldie’s pheromones, able to interfere with the controlled zombies and even seize control.

And from the eight smaller holes emerged the familiar small green insects, swarming around her, providing a 360-degree view.

Four types of insects: white, red, green, and gold, for scouting, control, searching, and attack, covering all her needs.

Lin Jiayao switched her eyes to the concentric circles, ready to deploy the golden insects.

She noticed that Goldie’s evolutionary path was different from that of the “corn cob” and the “green fatty.”

After this evolution, she didn’t feel any connection to human brains or any mental enhancement from consuming them. It seemed her mental strength increased by creating insects.

Unlike their strategy of accumulating brains, Goldie was specializing in insect control.

Insects… better than brains, at least.

As she directed the white scout insects, she continued walking.

The bone insects were fast. Within half a minute, they had located the corn cob.

According to the images they transmitted, it was inside a large theater with a broken wall, leaning against the wall, seemingly dormant.

Lin Jiayao quickly directed the red insects towards the theater and then followed, running as fast as she could.

She knew Lurkers would have detected her by now, but they couldn’t roar like Biters or Sprinters; the information wouldn’t spread quickly.

She had to launch a surprise attack before the horde gathered.

The red insects had reached the theater, buzzing around it, their pheromones creating a perimeter.

This would slow down other approaching zombies, giving her a buffer zone.

    “Crash—”

Bursting into the theater, Lin Jiayao’s right hand gripped the pistol, chambering a round, while her left tentacles reached into the ammo vest and took out the four grenades.

    “Buzz—”

Only after she entered the darkened theater did the giant corn cob awaken.

An earsplitting buzz of wings filled the theater, accompanied by the growls of approaching zombies from outside, like a gruesome orchestra.

Lin Jiayao looked at the towering corn cob and the swarm of red insects flying towards her.

    “Buzz—”

Several golden streaks shot from her eyes, piercing the swarm and hitting the corn cob’s outer layer.

And Lin Jiayao charged, her gunfire punctuating the scene.

    “Bang, bang, bang, bang—”

After emptying a magazine into the swarm, she saw a small hole in the gelatinous membrane covering one of the corn cob’s legs, created by a bullet.

And a golden insect had burrowed into the hole, preventing it from closing.

Facing the overwhelming swarm of red insects, Lin Jiayao didn’t hesitate. She discarded the empty pistol, took out a Blood Crystal Combat Stimulant from the safehouse, and injected it into her chest.

Discarding the syringe, she charged towards the corn cob.

She had simulated this many times; she wasn’t afraid of the swarm.

As long as she reached the corn cob before being overwhelmed, threw a grenade into the wound she’d created, and burrowed inside, the swarm would be useless.

Having successfully infiltrated the theater, the scales were tipped in her favor.

Chapter 96: Curing Burnout Part 2

Lin Jiayao decided to try absorbing the remaining 100g.

She took the thumb-sized crystal from the safehouse and put it in her mouth.

Like rain on parched earth, the crystal instantly dissolved, flowing towards her eye sockets.

But before it could even reach her eyes, it was absorbed, her face itching intensely, as if new skin was forming beneath.

She scratched at her face and felt something peel away, a handful of flesh and skin.

    “Gurgle…”

Rubbing the bloody mass between her fingers, her heart sank.

    No…

Goldie’s head… wasn’t going to shrink like the “green fatty,” was it? With black, shell-like holes covering her neck and shoulders…

    Oh god, please no!

She quickly rinsed her hand in the water, then touched her face again, and more flesh peeled away…

This flesh seemed… redundant, as if it would have fallen off anyway, even without her touching it, washed away by the next rain.

If she really became like the “green fatty”…

Then she could only thank Goldie for her service and move on.

She submerged her face in the dark water and washed it.

Then she realized that not only the skin on her face but also the holes in her eye sockets were crumbling.

She even tried to probe the holes with her tentacles, but they just… dissolved.

Feeling the emptiness within Goldie’s body, like a void, Lin Jiayao leaned against the sewer wall.

Now she was facing a serious dilemma.

Should she use more blood crystals to complete Goldie’s evolution?

Looking at the three-hour extraction time, she clenched her fist.

Fine, so what if it’s ugly? As long as it’s strong, I can always use the extra blood crystals to upgrade the other zombies.

It wasn’t that she was prejudiced against Hive Zombies, but no sane person would be attracted to a gelatinous blob filled with brains.

If anyone actually looked at a Hive Zombie’s black holes and slimy flesh and felt… anything other than disgust… then they should join the Voodoo Cult; they’d find like-minded individuals there.

Focus on combat power, eliminate the “corn cob,” and then worry about aesthetics.

If A4 consumed the Hive Zombie’s blood crystals, it might inherit the abilities without the grotesque transformation.

Thinking this, Lin Jiayao took the two blood crystal stones from the safehouse.

Well, if they were meant to be spent, they were meant to be spent.

She reluctantly pushed them into her eye sockets.

From the previous evolution, she knew this was where the blood crystals were needed most.

The crystals melted instantly, the liquid flowing into the holes in her eyes, a searing pain, like molten lava.

    “Cough… Aaagh—!”

The pain was unbearable; she clawed at her eyes, but there was nothing there.

    “Ugh—”

The burning sensation spread from her eyes, down her throat, through her entire body.

    “AAAAAH—”

The unrelenting pain was almost too much to bear. She punched the ground and then, suddenly remembering something, looked at the system window in the upper left corner.

    Switch!

She quickly shifted her consciousness back to her main body.

    “Gasp—”

Back in her body, Lin Jiayao inhaled sharply, the phantom pain lingering.

Her heart raced, her mind still reeling from the shock.

    So painful…

A zombie wouldn’t feel this; but her human consciousness couldn’t handle it; she’d had to escape.

After lying still for a moment, not knowing if Goldie’s evolution was complete, Lin Jiayao felt her heart rate slowly returning to normal.

    I need to calm down…

She felt a hand on her waist, tucked inside her shirt, resting on her stomach.

Her sister’s habit; pinching her cheeks while she was awake, holding her waist or stomach while she slept.

Lin Jiayao gently pulled her sister’s hand out from under her shirt and tried to turn over, to face her.

But she couldn’t; her sister’s legs were tightly wrapped around hers.

Her movement, however, woke Lin Xiwan, who rubbed her eyes sleepily. “What’s wrong… Yao?”

“I want to turn over…” Lin Jiayao mumbled.

    “Oh… okay.”

Lin Xiwan sleepily lifted her leg slightly, helped her sister turn over, then put her leg back down, holding Lin Jiayao’s legs between them, a gentle nudge.

    Like an automatic lock.

Lin Jiayao snuggled closer, hugging her sister, her face buried in her chest.

Lin Xiwan, still half-asleep, pulled her closer, her left arm around Lin Jiayao’s head, and drifted off again.

Lying in her sister’s embrace, soothed by her warmth and scent, Lin Jiayao’s anxiety faded.

    Sister… lend me your strength…

She inhaled deeply, the scent of soap and her sister’s familiar fragrance calming her mind, her heart rate slowing.

    I should be ready now…

    She closed her eyes.

    “Crack—”

The moment she opened her eyes in Goldie’s body, she heard a cracking sound, like a shell breaking.

    And then she could see.

The murky sewer was clearly visible.

After a moment of surprise, Lin Jiayao realized she didn’t feel any discomfort; even the earlier emptiness was gone.

And most importantly… she could feel her eyes.

Not the insect eyes, but real eyes, able to move and focus.

She moved her eyes, but her vision didn’t change.

Even looking straight ahead, she could still see her peripheral vision clearly, as if it had been integrated into her main field of view.

She touched her shoulder; it was cold and smooth.

She touched her neck; no holes.

    I didn’t become a “green fatty”?

Focusing, she could sense her Hive and the insects within. She decided to summon a few to see what she looked like now.

She could sense that the insects had undergone the most significant change, but she needed to test their abilities.

    “Buzz—”
    “Whoosh—”
    “Thwack—”

Following her usual method, she willed an insect to fly out from one of the holes.

But she only saw a flash of gold, one of its perspectives showing a rapid approach towards a wall before she lost control.

It had smashed into the wall, a small crater in the concrete, its body lodged within.

    So fast?

    What was that golden flash?

After a moment of stunned silence, she recovered.

She summoned another insect, this time letting it crawl slowly out of a hole.

After it fully emerged, she carefully controlled its wings, making it fly slowly in front of her, facing her.

Lin Jiayao looked at the smaller, golden insect, surprised.

Through its eyes, she saw her current form.

Her previously dirty, matted blonde hair now flowed smoothly down her back, gleaming faintly.

Her face was still that of a little girl, but her skin was no longer the dull gray of a decaying Biter but a normal, albeit bloodless, pale.

    She looked… more refined.

But that wasn’t the most significant change.

    Her eyes.

The empty sockets had been replaced.

But they weren’t normal eyes, with whites and pupils.

They were like rotating hives, four distinct surfaces, each with different holes serving as “pupils.”

The first surface had a single, dark hole.

The second had six smaller holes arranged in a circle.

The third had eight even smaller holes intersecting in the center.

And the fourth, from which the golden insect had emerged, had concentric circles of holes radiating outwards.

She could sense that each surface could summon different types of insects.

    This ability…

Lin Jiayao clenched her fists, her eyes cycling through the different “summoning modes” as she smiled.

Her chances against the corn cob had just increased dramatically.
