Chapter 109: No Worries About Pregnancy

This time, Mask had nothing to transfer. The blood crystals collected from the Voodoo Cult were already in the safehouse, so the settlement screen was skipped.

A total of about six blood crystals.

So, she’d only collected about five from the Voodoo Cult members.

It seemed even Voodoo Cult squads weren’t particularly wealthy.

Back in her body, Lin Jiayao transferred the five blood crystals to the warehouse, then used the extra crystals to purchase two Blood Crystal Combat Stimulants, exactly using up the remainder.

She put the two stimulants in the safehouse and opened her eyes.

Only about forty minutes had passed since she logged into Mask, but the sky outside was already turning a dusky orange; nightfall was approaching.

    “Sister.”

“What is it?” Lin Xiwan, steering with her left hand, reached out and took her sister’s left hand.

She thought her sister was nervous.

After all, every night drive seemed to bring trouble; their luck was terrible.

But this time, it had been relatively uneventful. Besides encountering that camp’s advance team earlier, they hadn’t seen any other humans or zombies.

    Surprisingly safe.

“Can we get through… before dark?” Lin Jiayao asked casually, tracing patterns on her sister’s palm with her finger, looking at the orange sky.

“Probably…?” Lin Xiwan wasn’t familiar with Wuchuan City, but highways generally avoided densely populated areas.

They would likely only pass through the outskirts or some industrial zones, not the city center.

“There’s the exit.” Seeing the highway exit ahead, she breathed a sigh of relief.

The roads had been clear, and they’d reached it faster than expected.

The barrier at the toll station had been smashed, the area littered with wrecked cars and weathered bones.

Several lanes were blocked by abandoned vehicles, covered in a thick layer of dust, clearly having been there for a while.

Their modified jeep couldn’t just drive over them.

“Yao, use your ability and check the surroundings,” Lin Xiwan said, squeezing her sister’s hand gently.

The grassland incident had clearly shaken her; she no longer trusted her own eyes.

    “Okay.”

Lin Jiayao put aside the thought of checking the evolution options and placed her right hand on the door’s armrest, activating Blood Crystal Vision and Bone Spike Lurker. The red highlights and the terrain map merged in her mind.

Besides the distant red glow of the city, there were no blood crystals within several hundred meters. It was safe.

“No blood crystal entities nearby,” she said, her eyes returning to normal.

“Good, then let’s rest for a few minutes. I’ll refuel… Do you need to use the restroom?” Lin Xiwan asked.

    “Yes,” Lin Jiayao nodded.

“How about you, Xiao Yibai?” She looked back at the little girl.

“Restroom?” Huayibai blinked, then shook her head. “No.”

She lifted the hem of her white dress, showing them. “Yibai doesn’t pee-pee.”

“Hey, hey, hey, girls shouldn’t lift their skirts! Didn’t your mother teach you that?” Lin Xiwan quickly leaned over and pushed Huayibai’s hand down.

Huayibai looked at Lin Jiayao, then back at Lin Xiwan, and nodded. “Mommy told me that.”

“Then why did you do it?” Lin Xiwan sighed, slightly exasperated.

“But Mommy said not to do it in front of strangers,” Huayibai pouted slightly. “She didn’t say anything about… familiar people…”

“What kind of mother is that?!” Lin Xiwan rubbed her forehead. “Just sit tight. I’ll refuel the car.”

She turned off the engine, pressed a button on the key fob, and the trunk slowly opened.

“Yao, wait for me, I’ll be quick.” She patted her sister’s head, went to the back of the car, took out a jerrycan, and then walked towards the fuel tank.

No blood crystals nearby, no signs of human activity within 150 meters; Lin Jiayao wasn’t worried.

Blood Crystal Vision was reassuring; she no longer had to fear being ambushed.

While her sister was refueling, Lin Jiayao opened the system interface and looked at the evolution options.

    「Please retain your evolution」
「1、【Bone Spike Lurker Lv.4 (Gray): Increased Lurker precision and range to 200m, can simulate terrain within 100m】」
「2、【Bone Hardening Lv.2 (Gray): Moderately increases your bone defense】」
「3、【Severed Form Lv.1 (Gold): Allows you to abandon your human form, shedding your weak flesh, for a new form better suited for controlling zombies. All bone-related abilities are greatly enhanced】」

She quickly dismissed the first two options and focused on the third.

That Severed Form… she’d seen it before, but had chosen the more sensible… Bone Manipulator Lv.2 instead.

Severed Form… just the name brought to mind Mask’s current appearance.

Literally severing her body, abandoning her weak flesh, becoming just a head, like Mask, controlling zombies with bone spikes.

It seemed powerful… but she hesitated for the same reason as before.

What if she couldn’t… reattach her head?

Mask’s control method destroyed the zombies’ bones.

If she detached her own head and spine, and couldn’t put them back…

Would she be stuck as just a head, like Mask?

Powerful, yes… but her sister would never accept that!

Her adorable little sister… reduced to a head… even if her sister somehow accepted it, she wouldn’t be able to… cuddle her at night.

If her sister could cuddle a severed head… then there was something wrong with her.

She decided to ask the system.

“System, is that Severed Form transformation… reversible?”

「Irreversible. Once chosen, the system will modify your body accordingly.」
「The host need not worry about failure. System products are guaranteed to be of the highest quality.」

    I wasn’t worried about failure!

Lin Jiayao mentally complained, then looked back at the options.

She remembered Mask’s skull deflecting a sniper bullet, and that Voodoo Cult man’s forehead deflecting a rifle bullet.

The bones of evolved zombies and Awakened were incredibly durable, even able to withstand bullets.

So, to avoid being shot in the head, besides the third option, enhancing her own bone density seemed like the best choice.

And with Blood Crystal Vision, she didn’t need a higher level of Bone Spike Lurker. So, the second option was the most practical.

Carefully, she selected Bone Hardening Lv.2.

She didn’t want her sister to return and find her as a severed head, held aloft by bone spikes.

    That would traumatize her.

    “Click—”

The sound of the gas cap closing; her sister had finished refueling and was putting the jerrycan back in the trunk.

The trunk was connected to the back seat, now separated by a wall of supplies.

    “Thump—” The trunk closed.

The air was thick with the smell of gasoline.

“Click—” Lin Xiwan opened the passenger door, looked at her sister, who had opened her arms expectantly, and lifted her out of the car.

“Xiao Yibai, stay in the car. Don’t wander off,” she said to Huayibai. “Sister will be back soon.”

    “Okay!”

Huayibai nodded and sat obediently on the equipment box, her hands on her knees.

She didn’t ask to use the restroom; Lin Xiwan assumed she wasn’t thirsty and didn’t think much of it.

Only Lin Jiayao knew the true meaning of Huayibai’s earlier statement: It had no… such function.

Below the skirt were just… decorative, non-functional imitations of human organs; they looked real, but they didn’t produce waste, didn’t feel pain, and couldn’t… get pregnant.

Seeing Huayibai behaving, Lin Xiwan, carrying Lin Jiayao, looked around and then walked towards the abandoned toll booths.

Even in the apocalypse, they still retained some sense of modesty.

If possible, she preferred some privacy.

Standing on the platform of a toll booth, she peered inside, checking for any corpses or other unpleasant surprises.

Just a dusty, moldy wooden table and some dried bloodstains.

Satisfied, she carried her sister inside. After a while, they returned.

Lin Jiayao’s expression was neutral, but Lin Xiwan seemed… thoughtful.

After placing her sister back in the passenger seat, Lin Xiwan returned to the service area and began moving the abandoned vehicles blocking their path, lifting and tossing them aside.

    “Screech—”
    “Thump—”
    “Rumble—”

The sounds of scraping metal and crashing vehicles echoed. She was in a hurry.

Soon, a single lane was clear.

Wiping the dust from her hands, she got back in the jeep and started the engine.

    “Whirr—”

The freshly fueled engine roared to life, and she accelerated towards the highway exit.

Lin Jiayao had Huayibai hand her a rifle and several magazines from the back, held the weapon, activated Blood Crystal Vision, and scanned the surroundings.

As the sky darkened, Lin Xiwan turned on the headlights, carefully navigating around the overturned vehicles, scattered rocks, and debris.

Headlights made them a target, but driving without them was too dangerous.

So far, the road seemed clear, no signs of human or zombie activity.

As they passed some buildings, a few Biters emerged, giving chase, but they were easily outrun.

“Hoo…” Lin Xiwan, seeing a clear stretch of road ahead, relaxed slightly. “It seems Wuchuan City is pretty safe, we should be ab—mmpph—”

Lin Jiayao covered her sister’s mouth.

“Don’t jinx it,” she said calmly.

Whenever her sister mentioned things being safe, something bad usually happened.

It made her wonder if they were cursed.

    “Clang—”

A sudden impact on the hood, a metallic clang as if hit by a rock.

    “Screech—”

Lin Xiwan quickly tapped the brakes, slowing the jeep. Lin Jiayao activated Blood Crystal Vision, scanning the surroundings, even the sky.

Nothing… no red lights nearby, and the sky above was dark, no aerial threats.

Perhaps a rock kicked up by the tires…? But even then, it should have hit the chassis, not the hood…

“Anything?” Lin Xiwan asked, swerving slightly, trying to avoid any potential obstacles.

“No… no blood crystal entities within three hundred meters.” Lin Jiayao shook her head, her heart pounding.

Not an Awakened? An ordinary human?

Blood Crystal Vision had a major flaw: it couldn’t detect ordinary humans.

“Sister, I can’t see non-blood-crystal entities,” she said, raising her rifle, reminding her sister.

“I know…” Lin Xiwan replied, continuing to swerve, then, “Yao, Yibai, hold on tight!”

She straightened the steering wheel and slammed on the gas.

Ahead was a long, straight stretch of national highway, the road clear, the signs indicating a smooth path to the next highway entrance.

She wouldn’t dodge; she would speed through.

    “Vroom—”

The jeep accelerated to 120km/h, its speed still increasing.

The modified engine roared, carrying them swiftly past the buildings on either side.

At this speed, even a skilled sniper would struggle to hit them.

And in a few moments, they would be out of range.

After about twenty seconds, Lin Xiwan slowed down.

Although it was a good car, pushing it too hard would damage the engine.

Even with modifications, the parts weren’t new; they were at least five years old.

Maintaining a steady 120km/h, she asked her sister, “Yao, is anything chasing us?”

Lin Jiayao scanned the surroundings, seeing several red dots inside buildings and by the roadside, then looked back… nothing…

Just as she was about to say they weren’t being followed, she saw a red dot rapidly approaching from above.

And even over the engine’s roar, she heard the buzzing.

Holy shit! A Voodoo Cult flying insect!

“Sister! It’s that flying insect from earlier!” Lin Jiayao shouted, quickly placing the rifle on the dashboard, ready to fire through the roof.

“What?” Lin Xiwan had just asked what was wrong when she heard the buzzing behind them.

She instantly slammed on the gas.

But even at full speed, they were no match for the airborne insect.

    “Click—”

Lin Jiayao switched to full auto and fired at the rapidly approaching insect.

    “Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang—”

The muzzle flash illuminated the car’s interior, and several bullet holes appeared in the roof.

But the giant insect seemed unaffected, diving towards them.

“It’s coming down!” Lin Jiayao shouted, quickly reloading.

Even her speed, faster than most soldiers, wasn’t enough. The red dot was almost upon them.

    “Yibai—!!!”

Just as the giant insect was about to hit them, Lin Jiayao only had time to shout Huayibai’s name and reach out.

    “Buzz—”
    “Crash—”

The giant insect slammed into the jeep, crushing it like a hydraulic press crushing a lump of butter.

The asphalt beneath them cracked like a spiderweb. Amidst the dust and debris, only a round, blood-red, ladybug-like creature remained, its massive body pressing down on the wreckage.

    The jeep had vanished.

“Damn it…” A section of the insect’s exoskeleton opened, and a man climbed out, cursing. “This fucking sucks.”

    “Ptoo—”

He spat on the ground and jumped down.

“Always having to run around for support… This is bullshit. Everyone’s waiting, where the hell is that Luo bitch?” He kicked the insect, telling it to move.

    “Screech—”

The giant insect clicked its mandibles and, using its spiky legs, slowly stood up, making way.

Just then, a medium-sized Voodoo Cult convoy arrived.

They had been waiting in Southwest Province for the B-rank Awakened to arrive and escort her to Guangdong.

    But she was long overdue.

And she had a history of being late, so they were all getting impatient.

    Especially the insect pilot.

The later she arrived, the more work for him.

If they couldn’t quickly crush those camps, the more survivors escaped, the more he would have to chase them down, following the Boss’s orders.

    Forced overtime.

Just like the car beneath his insect, the fastest camps had already escaped Guangdong.

“Trouble…” The convoy’s headlights illuminated the scene, and the pilot looked at the crushed vehicle beneath the insect.

If he wasn’t mistaken, that car had been flattened, hopefully, there were some blood crystals to salvage.

    But looking closely, he frowned.

    The car was flattened, but…

    Only half-flattened?

Through the shattered windshield, he saw a blood-soaked figure, its hand pushing against the twisted metal of the roof.

The tires and other parts of the vehicle were completely crushed, but the driver and passenger areas had been… protected, even the A-pillars were intact.

An Awakened? No… not just one!

He noticed another girl in the driver’s arms, and on top of that girl, another young woman, seemingly unconscious.

    They’re all alive…

    “Barong—”
    “Buzz—”

As the man shouted in alarm, the beetle beside him spread its spiked wings, creating a gust of wind that cleared the dust and debris.

He rolled out of the way as the beetle took flight, circling the wreckage and landing beside him.

But another figure moved even faster than his insect.

The younger girl, the one who had been in the passenger seat, now on top of the driver, turned, raised her rifle in a perfect supine firing position, and opened fire.

    “Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang—”

    Chapter 108: Kamen Rider p2

Shrapnel from the grenade had ripped a long gash across his abdomen. His neatly combed hair was now disheveled, covering his left eye.

“Big Brother,” groaning, raised his rifle, but a bone spike whip, faster than his movements, sliced through the air, severing his hand and the rifle in one swift motion.

It was the man in the maid outfit.

A barbed bone spike whip, similar to Mask’s bone chain hook, but more flexible, extended from his palm.

“Now, now, no need for roughhousing, sweetie~” He sashayed towards “Big Brother,” his hips swaying, the bone whip trailing behind him, and gently lifted the man’s chin with a finger. “Although… I wouldn’t mind a little roughhousing later… from you~”

“Fuck you…” The man jerked his head away, stumbling backward.

He quickly assessed his men; most were injured from the explosion, groaning on the ground.

    “Fuck…”

He gritted his teeth, blood trickling from his gums.

Their camp had few Awakened; he had personally trained these snipers and spotters; the only other Awakened was the young woman injured in the car crash.

And now, they couldn’t even fight back.

The difference between D-rank and C-rank was too great.

“Why did you run, sweetie…?” The man in the maid outfit retracted his bone whip, a look of mock concern. “That must have hurt…”

He walked towards “Big Brother,” took the cigarette from his mouth, and took a drag, his left hand casually groping the man’s groin, his hips swaying suggestively.

A 1.9-meter tall, muscular man, acting like… well, like a giddy schoolgirl.

“Come with me, handsome~” He leaned closer, his eyes half-closed. “I like your beard… and your eyes… Hmm… step on me…”

“Big Brother” clenched his remaining hand, his fingernails digging into his palm.

After a few deep breaths, he seemed to make up his mind. “Let them go… and I’ll go with you,” he said.

“Let them go? Of course…” The man in the maid outfit started to agree excitedly, then a look of mock distress appeared on his face. “But the Boss gave us a kill order, no survivors…”

Suddenly, an idea. He snapped his fingers, tapping his foot. “Then why don’t you all just join us? If you join the Voodoo Cult, you won’t be a Guangdong camp anymore~”

“How about it? Join us~ hubby~~~”

As he leaned closer, “Big Brother” snapped his fingers with his remaining hand.

    “Bang—”

    “Shhh—”

    “Boom—”

A grenade flew through the air, exploding behind the man in the maid outfit. A bullet hit his forehead, lodging itself in the bone.

And several smoke and flashbang grenades detonated among the Voodoo Cult members.

“Fucking… tranny!” “Big Brother” kicked the stunned man, sending him flying into the smoke.

“Scatter! Scatter! Scatter!!!” He yelled, picked up a rifle from the ground, and ran towards a nearby building.

He stepped onto the roof of a jeep, jumped towards a second-floor window, and tumbled inside.

His teammates, having received the signal, followed, rolling and leaping, expertly disappearing into the surrounding buildings.

They weren’t stupid enough to trust the Voodoo Cult.

“Well, well… how… exciting~” The man in the maid outfit slowly got up, ignoring the bullet in his forehead, and looked towards the window where “Big Brother” had disappeared.

“Kill the rest,” he said coldly, then, flicking his wrist, his bone whip shot out, hooking onto the second-floor windowsill and pulling him upwards.

    “Thump—”

He landed on the windowsill, smiling down at “Big Brother,” who was sitting on the floor, still stunned.

“Darling~ have you chosen your room yet?”

He taunted, then noticed something was wrong.

The camp leader’s gaze wasn’t… focused on him.

    He wasn’t afraid!

He looked to the side and saw several thick, vertical bone spikes, surrounded by countless thinner ones.

Following the spikes upwards, he saw a massive, half-skull, almost touching the ceiling, looking down at him.

The two halves of its jaw, like a flytrap, clicked slightly, as if in greeting.

    Holy… fucking… shit…

    A… a zombie…?

It had been hiding here the entire time?!

    “Fuck—”

Before he could even finish the curse, or jump back, a bone spike erupted from the wall beside him.

    “Boom—”

The barbed bone chain, trailing a chain, burst through the wall, piercing his chest and pulling him inside.

    “Crash—”

His body, dragged through the shattered wall, debris and dust flying, the commotion attracting everyone’s attention.

Their vision was obscured by the dust, but “Big Brother,” inside, had a clear view.

His jaw dropped, he stared in disbelief, even forgetting to close his mouth as dust filled it, forgetting to escape.

He saw the white head drag the man’s body towards it, the bone chain taut.

    “Crack—”

The two bone mandibles, like shears, neatly severed the man’s head, then gently placed it on the half-skull.

He heard the crunching of bones, felt something burrowing into the man’s body.

The six thick bone spikes on the creature shifted to the man’s back, like a trailing cape.

The thinner bone spikes made the “cape” even more elaborate.

No, not a cape, but a massive Predator skull, the human head replaced by a woman’s half-skull, the massive jawbones framing it like shoulder pads.

And to his horror, the headless Voodoo Cult warrior raised its right hand, flexing its fingers, as if getting used to the body.

What the fuck is that monster?!

Suddenly, he remembered what his men had reported seeing on the rooftops a few days ago… that white thing… could it be…?

It… it held a grudge? It had been shot and had been waiting here ever since?!

Just as he finally reacted, raising his rifle, the Voodoo Cult warrior, now clad in bone armor, turned, its back, a mass of bone spikes, facing him.

    “Haaa—”

He raised his severed arm defensively, but the monstrous figure simply jumped from the second floor.

    “Thump—”

Watching the dust settle below, he trembled.

What… what kind of monster was that?

A C-rank Awakened, killed so easily, without even a chance to fight back?

And now what was it going to do…?

    “AAAAH—”

    “Holy shit—”

    “Boss?!”

Screams and shouts from below snapped him out of his stupor.

    “Fuck…”

His men were still down there…

Fighting the dizziness from blood loss, he raised his rifle, crawled to the broken wall, and aimed at the scene below.

He lay prone on the sharp debris, ignoring the pain, his vision blurring as he focused.

But then, his cheek, pressed against the rifle stock, lifted, his gaze shifting from the scope.

The monster below was slaughtering the Voodoo Cult members with methods he couldn’t even comprehend.

Its bone spikes extended and retracted, impaling anyone they touched and dragging them towards it.

And the body it controlled was also attacking with its bone whip… It could even use the controlled zombie’s ability!

His impaled subordinates, their spines connected to the bone spikes, raised their rifles and fired at their former comrades, their eyes vacant, lifeless puppets. They weren’t even zombies anymore!

The monster was controlling their corpses!

The Voodoo Cult members, originally in seven vehicles, didn’t last even two minutes.

After the last one fell, “Big Brother” finally recovered slightly.

The massacre had crushed his spirit; he had no will to fight, and even if he did, it was futile.

But strangely, after killing everyone, the monstrous figure stopped its slaughter.

It… it was looting the Voodoo Cult vehicles?

    Looting?

    It…

    Was controlled by an Awakened?

Its meticulous scavenging, not wasting a single blood crystal, suggested an Awakened controller.

But he remained silent, as did the other survivors hidden in the surrounding buildings, all witnesses to the carnage.

They were all afraid of attracting the monster’s attention.

He watched as it finished looting, abandoned the muscular body it had been controlling, and crawled to a Voodoo Cult SUV with its roof cut off.

It climbed inside and began… fiddling with something.

He watched for a while and realized what it was doing.

It was trying to… start the car?

“Old Bai! Old Bai!” he called out.

“Boss? What’s wrong?” Old Bai’s voice came from another building.

“Hurry, help it start the car!”

    “What?”

    “Just do it!”

    “Uh… okay.”

Old Bai seemed hesitant, but ultimately, he trusted his boss.

Their boss wasn’t the type to abandon their teammates.

The middle-aged man, Old Bai, cautiously approached the SUV.

He avoided looking at the monstrous figure, keeping his eyes on the interior of the vehicle.

“First… turn the key… yes, and then put it in gear… up, up… yes…”

    “Yes, that’s right… no, no… yes, that’s right… oops, no…”

Following Old Bai’s instructions, the monstrous zombie quickly started the SUV, slammed on the gas, and sped off.

Fortunately, it knew how to steer, narrowly avoiding the wrecked vehicles as it drove away.

And the zombie… hadn’t spoken a single word, like a silent Kamen Rider.

After a while, the survivors emerged from their hiding places, looking at each other.

Then they remembered their injured leader.

    “Boss!”

    “Quick, quick, help the injured!”

“Search the Voodoo Cult’s vehicles! Disable their radios and tracking devices…”

    “And get some medicine…”

They quickly regrouped, treating the injured and preparing their vehicles, ready to evacuate Xin City.

Meanwhile, Lin Jiayao had driven the SUV straight into a pedestrian mall, her designated extraction point.

    “Crash—”

The SUV was totaled. Her first driving experience hadn’t been very successful.

But she had reached the extraction point with time to spare.

  • Sickly Girl Doesn’t Die in Zombie Simulator 108p1

    Chapter 108: Kamen Rider p1

The engine’s roar drowned out Huayibai’s muttering; even Lin Xiwan only heard snippets.

She had wanted to ask Huayibai what it was saying, to change the subject.

But remembering the little girl’s… unusual pronouncements, she decided against it.

    To avoid further awkwardness.

So, to assert her seniority and experience as an Awakened, she asked her sister about her new ability.

After her personal coaching in the camp, her sister should have a better understanding of how it worked.

Lin Jiayao explained the details of her healing ability.

Hearing that her sister’s secondary ability was such a powerful survival tool, Lin Xiwan was relieved.

Her sister’s survivability had increased; this was good.

And if she was ever injured in battle, her sister could heal her, no need for disgusting blood and flesh consumption, just a simple exchange of saliva.

They were sisters, sharing everything; Lin Xiwan certainly wouldn’t be disgusted by her sister’s saliva.

But the ability’s side effects concerned her.

She had to prevent her sister from coming into direct contact with other Awakened, even ordinary humans.

Even she had felt a strange pull towards her sister; other Awakened, less restrained, might… well, bite her.

Her sister’s naturally cold demeanor, her beautiful face and slender body, and now this alluring ability…

Lin Xiwan doubted anyone could resist her, even if she wasn’t actively trying to tempt them.

I have to become stronger… much stronger… to protect her in this world…

She tightened her grip on the steering wheel.

“The sun is setting,” she said to her sister. “We’ll drive through the night, and if we’re lucky, we’ll reach Kun City by tomorrow afternoon.”

Glancing at the road signs, she added, “We need to pass through Wuchuan City before nightfall. We’ll be there in about an hour. You can sleep if you’re tired. I’ll wake you up when we reach the city.”

    “Okay,” Lin Jiayao nodded.

As a C-rank Awakened, Lin Xiwan had the mental and physical stamina to drive for days without sleep.

Putting distance between them and Guangdong Province, and Chongyu City, was their priority.

But passing through Wuchuan City at night was still risky.

She would wake her sister before they reached the city.

Zombies were more active at dusk, easily drawn by the sound of the engine; they needed her sister’s ability to navigate the more densely populated areas.

An experienced driver could easily find detours, but they weren’t experienced drivers, and they didn’t have GPS; their safest bet was to stick to the highway.

The Guangkun Highway led directly to Kun City; following this road was their best option.

“I’m going to take a nap then,” Lin Jiayao said, asking Huayibai for a bottle of water, taking a few sips, and then handing it back.

Having the helpful Huayibai around was convenient; she didn’t have to trouble her sister with such things.

What Lin Jiayao didn’t see was Huayibai carefully opening the bottle after she closed her eyes, licking the cap and the rim, then screwing the cap back on with a satisfied smile.

Neither sister noticed Huayibai’s little… “snack.”

Lin Jiayao was considering which zombie to log into.

Goldie was out; every login with Goldie had been time-consuming and dangerous, often involving intense battles.

And Goldie was slow; if speed was a factor, then the fifth zombie was also out.

She wanted to keep the sixth slot as a reserve, in case she logged in and couldn’t extract within an hour.

The second zombie, the Building-Tree Guardian, was in Kun City; she could use it in emergencies.

And she didn’t want to use the fourth zombie yet.

After the Voodoo Cult team’s annihilation in Fuzhou City, the Voodoo Cult would likely send a sweep team there.

Having the fourth zombie on autopilot was safer.

    That left only Mask.

Mask was agile, fast, well-defended, with unique abilities. It should be able to extract within an hour, as long as the extraction point wasn’t too far.

And after building the [Zombie Loot Box], she was low on blood crystals, and Mask, surrounded by controlled zombies, could easily acquire more.

Having made her decision, Lin Jiayao didn’t hesitate. She logged into Mask.

Lin Jiayao’s consciousness sank into darkness.

In a parking lot in Xin City, a head-spider, perched atop an Armored zombie, slowly opened its eyes.

Immediately, she felt a surge of power in her bone spikes.

Before her last extraction, she had just evaded a group of human snipers, leading a horde of controlled zombies across a bridge and into this parking lot.

This feeling of power… it came from the zombies impaled on her bone spikes.

Having not logged into Mask for a while, she was momentarily disoriented by its current form and method of locomotion.

    “Crack, crack—”

She detached from the Armored zombie, withdrawing the bone spikes controlling the other zombies.

Instantly, the surrounding zombies, including the Armored one, collapsed, their bones shattered, blood crystals oozing from their bodies.

This was how Mask’s control differed from that of other zombies.

Mask’s bone spikes pierced directly into the spine and bones, instantly fatal.

Even if a zombie somehow survived the initial impalement, withdrawing the spikes was a death sentence.

This also meant she couldn’t use her bone spikes to control her own legs.

    “Click, click, click—”

Lin Jiayao moved through the corpses on her six thick bone legs, the thinner tendrils around her collecting the scattered blood crystals and transferring them directly to the safehouse.

After collecting everything, including the blood crystal from the Armored zombie, she only had a little over 100g.

    So poor…

But she couldn’t complain; she’d been completely broke after building the Zombie Loot Box.

This was a welcome, if meager, replenishment.

She then looked towards the extraction point.

    「Extraction Time 1:57:11」
    【Extraction Point: 10km】

    Ten kilometers?

A short distance for Mask. And if she could control a Sprinter or a Hunter, it would be even faster.

She had only intended to grab some quick blood crystals, not explore, so she crawled out of the parking lot, her body covered in dried zombie blood, and headed towards the extraction point.

But as she reached the road, the roar of an engine, approaching from behind, entered the range of her Bone Spike Lurker.

She looked back and sensed more and more vehicles approaching, crossing the bridge.

What’s going on? Another camp? Coming for me?

    “Rat-tat-tat-tat—”

Even without Bone Spike Lurker, she could hear the gunfire.

    Not targeting her, a battle.

    Trouble…

Several of her thinner bone spikes extended upwards, gripping the second-floor window of a nearby building – Mask was three meters tall; reaching a second-floor window wasn’t a problem.

She pulled herself into the building, hiding in the darkness, and observed the scene below.

Lin Jiayao was on a tight schedule. Whatever was happening, she wasn’t interested in getting involved. She would wait for them to leave before heading to the extraction point.

Just… please don’t fight right in front of the building… I don’t want to get splattered with blood…

Seconds later, the first vehicle entered her 50-meter detection range. A mental image of the vehicle and its occupants formed in her mind.

    Unfamiliar faces.

And it wasn’t a Voodoo Cult vehicle.

I’ll just wait for them to pass.

Lin Jiayao moved closer to the window, her three-meter-tall body barely fitting in the small space.

She listened with Bone Spike Lurker.

The second and third vehicles also entered her range; the first was almost out of range now.

    “Bang, bang—”

Just as the fourth vehicle entered her range, before its image could even form in her mind, two gunshots, and its rear tires exploded.

    “Sizzle—”
    “Crash—”

The vehicle, losing control at high speed, swerved and then, hitting the sidewalk, flipped over.

The second and third vehicles immediately stopped, and she heard voices from the second.

“Brother… Let me out, you guys go ahead, my sister’s car just flipped…”

    “Zzz… fucking hell… I can’t believe this…”

Curses from the first vehicle, but it quickly made a U-turn, screeched to a halt beside the overturned vehicle, and then, the second and third vehicles also turned, the three jeeps now blocking most of the four-lane road.

About twenty people emerged, each jeep having carried several passengers in the back.

Armed with various rifles and shotguns, they quickly took positions behind the jeeps, covering their teammates who were rescuing the injured from the overturned vehicle.

From the first jeep, a man wearing pink sunglasses, carrying a rifle, emerged. He was wearing only a pair of shorts, his upper body bare, clearly having been in a hurry.

    “Rat-tat-tat-tat—”

    “Bang, bang, bang, bang—”

    “Thump—Thump—”

Intense gunfire echoed through the twilight streets, attracting zombies.

    Oh, for fuck’s sake…

Lin Jiayao’s Bone Spike Lurker simulated the scene below, and she felt a headache coming on.

Of all the times for a firefight to break out… right below her…

    Her eyeless face turned, searching.

She was on the second floor of a commercial building. Perhaps there was a back exit.

Buildings like this usually had back exits.

I’ll just slip out the back…

    “Vroom—”

Suddenly, a fifth vehicle, on fire, sped towards the three jeeps, entering her 50-meter range, its details now clear.

A burning monster truck, a cheering, crazed driver, the vehicle showing no signs of slowing down, and a hand holding a primed grenade out the passenger window.

    The Voodoo Cult.

    “Retreat—Retreat—Shit!!!”

    “Boom—”

The flaming monster truck, like a suicide bomber, smashed through the jeeps’ makeshift barricade and exploded.

    “Clang—”

The force of the explosion sent a bumper flying, hitting the window beside Lin Jiayao, shattering it.

And following the first vehicle, the rest of the Voodoo Cult convoy, about seven vehicles judging by the sound of their engines, arrived.

They hadn’t entered her 50-meter range yet, but she could hear them approaching.

    A small Voodoo Cult convoy.

The Voodoo Cult’s B-rank Awakened was already dead, which meant there were no B-ranks, or higher, among these newcomers.

The convoy’s leader would be a C-rank, at most.

    I could try… a quick sweep.

She wasn’t the same as before, forced to run at the sight of the Voodoo Cult.

She was now their enemy. Any opportunity to weaken them…

    She wouldn’t let it pass.

And inflicting casualties on the Voodoo Cult in Guangdong would divert their attention from her and her sister.

    A convenient distraction.

The situation below, with the arrival and self-destruction of the Voodoo Cult’s vehicle, had turned instantly. The desperate, drug-fueled attack had broken through the makeshift barricade.

But the rest of the Voodoo Cult convoy hadn’t opened fire.

They were throwing Molotov cocktails, blocking the escape route.

A muscular man in a maid outfit jumped out of the vehicle in the center of the convoy.

His 1.9-meter frame and bulging muscles made the black and white maid outfit look ridiculous, but the “V” symbol on the white apron clearly identified his affiliation.

As he got out, the other Voodoo Cult members, armed, followed, surrounding the scattered survivors.

Near the wreckage of the exploded monster truck, the man in his underwear, “Big Brother,” was struggling to stand, clutching his stomach.

Chapter 107: Bewitched by My Sister p2

    [Extracting: 7.9]

    She settled down, waiting.

Having nothing on her, the system skipped the asset transfer, and her consciousness returned to her main body.

“Hoo…” she exhaled softly, not opening her eyes yet, but looking at the evolution retention interface.

    「Please retain your evolution」
「1、【Thick Hide Lv.1 (White): Thickens and toughens your skin, slightly increasing defense】」
「2、【Mutated Regeneration Lv.1 (Purple): A mutated version of Regeneration Lv.1, granting healing properties to your bodily fluids and flesh】」
「3、【Bite Lv.1 (White): Strengthens your bite muscles, teeth, and claws】」

    A stronger version of Regeneration?

Lin Jiayao thought of her other healing ability, [Symbiotic Link], which she had used on her sister.

Would this Mutated Regeneration enhance Symbiotic Link?

A decent healing evolution… better than nothing.

She wondered if continually upgrading her regeneration abilities would eventually allow her to recover from a gunshot wound in seconds.

    Perhaps.

After selecting the evolution, she felt the familiar warmth spreading through her body and opened her eyes.

The familiar highway. Her sister, humming a tune, seemed to be in a good mood.

Seeing her sister’s expression, Lin Jiayao could guess what had happened.

“We’re out of Guangdong?” she asked.

“You’re awake,” Lin Xiwan smiled. “We’re out of Guangdong and into Southwest Province~”

“That’s good…” Lin Jiayao nodded and habitually activated Blood Crystal Vision, scanning the area, then, seeing no immediate threats, relaxed.

She wanted to test this Lv.1 Mutated Regeneration. She’d initially planned to use the Training Grounds, but then she remembered a perfect test subject.

    Huayibai.

    The injured little “daughter.”

“Yibai,” she called softly. “Can you hand me that pack of biscuits from the back?”

“Hmm? Okay, Mommy!” Huayibai seemed surprised that her “Mommy” had spoken to her.

It jumped down from the box, grabbed a pack of compressed biscuits, knelt behind the center console, offered it to Lin Jiayao, and then looked at her expectantly.

“Good girl.” Knowing Huayibai craved affection and praise, Lin Jiayao patted its head.

Huayibai beamed, its eyes crinkling into a happy smile.

Seeing its innocent expression, Lin Jiayao felt a pang of guilt.

Huayibai trusted her so completely, and here she was, about to use it as a test subject.

Well… it’s just a healing test, not anything harmful.

And I don’t have any blood crystals to give it anyway.

Convincing herself, she opened the biscuit package.

“Hungry? Want some water? It’ll be dry without water,” Lin Xiwan offered, hearing her sister’s movements.

“No, thank you.” Lin Jiayao shook her head, then took a bite of the biscuit.

Then, offering the bitten biscuit to Huayibai, she asked, “Want a bite?”

The biscuit now had a bit of her saliva on it, the amount so small that the faint, sweet scent was barely noticeable.

Huayibai, which had been confused as to why its “Mommy” would offer it something she knew it didn’t eat, stared at the biscuit, its eyes wide.

The seemingly ordinary biscuit, now with a strange, irresistible allure.

Every cell in its body screamed for it, craving whatever was on that bitten edge.

Its instincts told it this was… nourishment, a small amount, but enough to restore some of its strength.

Without hesitation, it bent down and licked the biscuit.

Lin Xiwan, humming a tune as she drove, suddenly noticed something odd about their conversation.

    “Mommy… Yibai wants more…”

“Wait, here, you can have it.”

“What’s this sticky, slippery stuff? Yibai wants more…”

    “How are you feeling now?”

    “I feel… warm…”

If Lin Xiwan hadn’t glanced over and seen them just eating a biscuit, she would have suspected something… untoward was happening.

After the biscuit was gone, Lin Jiayao looked at her hands, surprised.

After choosing the Mutated Regeneration evolution, like the purple-skinned giant zombie, every part of her body now had healing properties.

She had become… like Tang Sanzang’s flesh, irresistible to demons.

She’d even tested it; even her hair had an alluring effect on Huayibai.

Oh no… had this evolution increased her attractiveness to zombies?

    That would be troublesome.

It might provoke attacks from zombies that would normally ignore her.

And would this… ability… affect Awakened too?

    She looked at her sister.

    “Sister.”

“What is it?” Lin Xiwan slowed down slightly, turning to her sister.

Lin Jiayao hesitated, choosing her words carefully. “Do you… feel anything… strange… when you look at me?”

Lin Xiwan was taken aback. “Strange… how?”

“I don’t know…” Lin Jiayao shook her head, unsure how her body affected Huayibai, just a vague suspicion. “Like… do you… want to… eat me?”

    “What?!”

    “Screech—”

Lin Xiwan slammed on the brakes, the tires screeching, and turned to her sister, her face pale.

“W-why… why would you even think that?!” She reached out to touch her sister’s face but stopped midway.

“What has Sister done to make you think that?!”

“Sister just… likes to hug you while sleeping, likes to pinch your cheeks, rub your head, touch your tummy and back while you sleep, likes to bathe you…”

As she spoke, she realized how… incriminating… her words sounded, and she trailed off, her mouth agape, stunned.

The more she spoke, the more she sounded like… someone who might actually… eat their sister.

And Lin Jiayao, looking at her stunned sister, was speechless.

“What are you even thinking about, Sister?” she sighed, pinching Lin Xiwan’s waist to snap her out of it. “I meant… eat… like… food!”

    Lin Xiwan finally understood.

“You meant… eat? Like… how zombies eat people?” she blinked, asking for clarification.

“What else?” Lin Jiayao gave her a look. “What kind of ‘eat’ were you thinking about?”

“Yibai wants to eat!” Huayibai chimed in from the back.

Lin Jiayao pushed Huayibai’s head back down.

Children should be seen, not heard!

Lin Xiwan coughed awkwardly. “Of course not… why would you even ask that?”

“You really… don’t?” Lin Jiayao asked again, wanting to be absolutely sure.

This was important. If her sister, an Awakened, wasn’t affected by her, then other Awakened wouldn’t be either.

Then she wouldn’t have to worry about interacting with other Awakened.

To confirm, she reached out and, placing her hand on her sister’s neck, pulled her closer.

    “Eh? What are you—”

Although curious, Lin Xiwan leaned in, following her sister’s pull.

Their foreheads and noses touched, their warm breaths mingling.

“Now?” Lin Jiayao asked, looking into her sister’s eyes.

Since her Mutated Regeneration was only Lv.1, the attraction wasn’t as strong as the purple-skinned zombie’s; she needed to be closer.

At this range, there shouldn’t be any misinterpretations.

Being so close, her sister’s scent filling her senses, Lin Xiwan’s gaze darted around, flustered.

    “Sister?”

“Ah?” Lin Xiwan, finally focusing on her sister’s eyes, said, “Yes?…”

“Focus… do you feel anything strange?” Lin Jiayao added, remembering the sensations she’d felt while controlling the fifth zombie. “A sweetness, a floral fragrance… anything like that?”

    “Sweetness?” Lin Xiwan’s face flushed slightly. “Yes… and a faint fragrance… I can’t describe it, it’s just… pleasant, calming… similar to your usual scent…”

Being this close, her sister’s breath on her face, made her feel strangely… flustered.

And the alluring scent emanating from her sister…

It made her want to lick her, to taste her, to…

Suddenly, Lin Xiwan pulled away, closing her eyes, her hand pressing against her temple, her body trembling slightly, speechless.

    What… what was that?

Why… why would she have such thoughts about Lin Jiayao?!

No, this wasn’t right… what was happening to her…?

She had never had such… inappropriate thoughts before.

    That was her little sister!

Lin Xiwan pinched her own cheek hard, until it turned red.

Her sudden reaction startled Lin Jiayao, who quickly reached out and stopped her.

“What’s wrong, Sister?” she asked, her voice filled with concern.

They’d been talking just fine, and then her sister had suddenly… freaked out.

Could that healing ability also cause… arousal?

Or had it really made her sister want to… eat her?

“I just…” Lin Xiwan opened her mouth, but couldn’t find the words.

    How could she say it?

That her sister, her beloved, adoring younger sister, whom she’d protected and cared for all these years… she was now… attracted to her?

Her sister would be terrified… She was completely vulnerable, and if Lin Xiwan wanted to… even Huayibai, an Awakened, couldn’t stop her.

“You… really wanted to… eat me?” Lin Jiayao asked, looking at her sister, guessing the reason for her distress.

Her sister was likely feeling guilty about those… urges.

After all, if she herself, looking at her sister, suddenly felt a craving to… devour her… she, too, would feel horrified and guilty.

Looking at her sister’s pained expression, her reddened eyes, Lin Jiayao felt a pang of sympathy.

    It’s my fault… I shouldn’t have tested my ability on her… I should have found another Awakened…

“It’s okay, Sis,” she said softly, placing her hand on her sister’s shoulder. “It’s… it’s part of the ability I Awakened… along with the eye thing… It was just… too weak before, I didn’t realize…”

“A-ability?” Lin Xiwan repeated the word, as if in disbelief. “An Awakened ability?”

It was possible for an Awakened to develop multiple abilities, but rarely across such drastically different categories.

According to Survivor’s Light’s research, the probability of a secondary ability evolving was 1 in 10.

    And a tertiary ability, 1 in 100.

Out of ten Awakened, only one would develop a secondary ability. And out of a hundred with secondary abilities, only one would develop a tertiary ability.

The most recorded so far had been a Survivor’s Light member with three abilities, all mental-related.

It seemed… her sister was a natural dual-Awakened, but they hadn’t considered that possibility before.

“Dual-Awakened? What’s your second ability?” A flicker of hope in Lin Xiwan’s voice. “Charm?”

If it was Charm, she would feel much better. It would mean she had simply been affected by her sister’s ability, not her own twisted desires…

But her sister shook her head.

“No,” Lin Jiayao replied. “It seems to be… a healing ability. My… my body, my blood… even my skin… they… they attract blood crystals and… and heal…”

Lin Xiwan’s eyes widened in realization.

So, her earlier urges to… lick and… consume… weren’t driven by lust, but by a genuine desire to… heal?

Thank goodness… not Charm… if it had been Charm… it would have been a disaster…

Lin Xiwan breathed a sigh of relief, forgiving herself for the… inappropriate thoughts.

It was just the effect of an unexpected ability; it wasn’t her true desire.

Once she knew about it, she could resist it… such a newly awakened ability couldn’t affect a prepared C-rank Awakened…

Of course, Lin Jiayao didn’t know what was going through her sister’s mind.

She still thought her sister was feeling guilty about wanting to… bite her.

“It’s okay, Sister. Look at you, you’re about to cry.” Lin Jiayao smiled gently, wiping a tear from her sister’s eye. “You’re a C-rank Awakened. What are you afraid of?”

“I’m not afraid for myself, I’m afraid for you,” Lin Xiwan said, taking her sister’s hand. “I was afraid you would be hurt.”

“I was so scared… that I would… do something to you, and you wouldn’t be able to resist… I was afraid… that you would hate me, despise me…”

Lin Xiwan wiped her own eyes, her voice trembling slightly.

Hearing this, Lin Jiayao’s heart warmed… indeed, if, in that state, her sister had suddenly started biting her… it would have been traumatizing.

But now she understood; it wasn’t her sister’s intention.

“It’s okay, Sister. I would never hate you, or despise you… no matter what you do to me,” she said with a smile.

Without her sister, she wouldn’t have survived the past five years; her sister had given her life; a few bites wouldn’t change that, even nine or ten bites wouldn’t change that.

But her words seemed to have an unexpected effect on her sister, whose face flushed again.

“W-what are you talking about?” Lin Xiwan feigned anger, pushed her sister’s hand away, restarted the car, and slammed on the gas, not speaking, even opening the window for fresh air.

    She seemed… flustered.

What’s wrong with Sister…? I didn’t say anything inappropriate… Lin Jiayao, puzzled, but seeing that her sister seemed to have recovered, didn’t press further.

And Huayibai, in the back, listening to their conversation, mumbled softly, “Why can Daddy eat Mommy, but Yibai can’t…?”

For Huayibai, “eat” meant… literally eat.

Of course, it wouldn’t actually… eat her “Mommy,” not without permission.

Chapter 107: Bewitched by My Sister p1

    What… was going on?

Lin Jiayao was certain she was in a logged-in zombie state.

Then why were these Japanese people worshipping a zombie?

And judging by their practiced movements and reverent expressions, this wasn’t the first time.

Looking at the woman with broken legs lying before her, Lin Jiayao ignored her and tried to pull at the chains binding her.

Not that she didn’t want to gather information, but firstly, there was the language barrier, and secondly, the woman’s hateful glare suggested she wasn’t open to communication.

“ちくしょう (Chikushō – Damn beast)…” the woman spat, glaring at Lin Jiayao.

Although not a common phrase, Lin Jiayao understood this particular Japanese curse.

But she didn’t dwell on it, instead checking the extraction point and time.

She didn’t know this woman’s identity, the situation in Japan, or the characteristics of Japanese zombies; these were things worth exploring.

Compared to that, the woman’s curses were insignificant.

    Besides, why not indulge her?

She located the extraction point, marked on the left side of her vision.

    「Extraction Time 1:59:51」
    【Extraction Point: 39m】

    39 meters?

    I can’t even get down this hill…

The short distance and long time reminded her of Mask’s first extraction.

Back then, Mask, just a head, and later, the fungal zombie, had also been given ample time to reach a nearby extraction point.

This wasn’t necessarily a good thing.

It usually meant the zombie had some limitations, or there were significant obstacles between the spawn point and the extraction point.

During Mask’s first login, it had encountered the seemingly invincible Nest Zombie.

The current situation also suggested difficulties.

She tested the chains, far too thin for her massive body. She could easily break them.

    So it wasn’t the chains…

Lin Jiayao closed her eyes, focusing on this zombie’s abilities.

After about a minute, she opened her eyes again.

She now understood why those people had been collecting the zombie’s bodily fluids.

The pores on its rough skin secreted a viscous substance.

This secretion, seemingly a kind of filth or grime, was a valuable medicine, both for humans and zombies.

In other words, its bodily fluids had medicinal properties.

But its survival didn’t depend on this ability, but on its thick hide and surprisingly agile body – like a heavily armored Hunter with a cape.

But now, it was clearly being farmed like a “pig,” deliberately fed low-blood-crystal food to increase its fat content and maximize the production of those fluids.

Judging by its size, it had been here for a long time.

As for why those Japanese people were worshipping her as a deity…

Lin Jiayao hadn’t understood, until she’d seen an old mural on the temple wall.

The mural depicted a corpulent figure with a purple face, holding a pipa, a fearsome deity… but its grotesque appearance and massive size were unlike any other Buddhist statue she’d seen.

It seemed to be a pre-apocalypse… Japanese cult.

And inscribed below the mural, in neat Chinese characters, were the words “Dhṛtarāṣṭra,” and beside it, “God of Ino.”

    Lin Jiayao frowned.

She now understood why they were keeping this giant zombie here.

It was likely a pre-apocalypse Japanese cult, trying to…

Cultivate the deity worshipped in their scriptures, a twisted version of Dhṛtarāṣṭra: the God of Ino.

    Lunatics…

It seemed the apocalypse drove people to madness everywhere.

Understanding her current situation, Lin Jiayao tried to move towards the extraction point.

She leaned forward slightly, and then, losing her balance, she toppled over.

    “AAAAAH—”

The wounded woman on the ground screamed and scrambled away, despite the risk of further injury, trying to escape the falling shadow.

    “Crash—”

Lin Jiayao’s massive body shattered the stone path. The woman, having just barely escaped, lay there, exhausted, her eyes filled with despair, only an arm’s length away from Lin Jiayao’s face.

She seemed to have given up completely.

Lin Jiayao tried to move, but then, a realization, both frustrating and slightly amusing.

    She couldn’t move.

No matter how hard she tried, her massive body, her flesh and fat spreading across the ground, pinned her in place.

    Trapped by her own weight.

After a few more attempts, Lin Jiayao gave up and looked at the woman.

She couldn’t move on her own.

This Awakened woman… she seemed to be at least D-rank… perhaps she could help.

Lin Jiayao extended her hand, her limbs still mobile, thankfully, reaching the woman.

    “Sob, sob, sob…”

The woman, seeing the massive hand approaching, closed her eyes and wept, her body trembling.

She felt her leg being grabbed, pulled towards the grotesque zombie’s mouth.

She waited for the inevitable, but it didn’t come.

Instead, a “squishing” sound, like something being rubbed against rough skin.

She cautiously opened her eyes and looked at the massive, purple zombie head inches away.

    Confusion replaced her fear.

    What… was it doing?

Lin Jiayao was digging through the folds of her own flesh with her right hand.

She pulled out a clump of viscous, purple fluid.

The fluid, surprisingly, didn’t smell foul; it had a faint, floral fragrance, a stark contrast to its appearance.

Then, holding the dripping mass, she brought it to the woman’s head.

For Lin Jiayao, this was just a small amount, a bit of drool.

But for the woman, it was enough to completely cover her body. She thrashed and struggled, as if being coated in the viscous fluid was more terrifying than being eaten.

    Lin Jiayao watched silently.

After ten minutes, the woman’s body began to change.

Her wounds rapidly healed, the scars from whips and other injuries closing, only her twisted legs remaining damaged.

Not just her wounds, but also her strength and her Awakened abilities were rapidly recovering.

Realizing this, she sat up, struggling against the sticky fluid.

A small cyclone formed in her palm, drawing the surrounding fluid into a vortex.

Ignoring the pain, she used the cyclone to cut open her legs along the fracture lines and then, using the viscous fluid, reconnected the bones.

She seemed skilled at manipulating the fluid, likely a former member of this cult.

While her legs slowly mended, she looked up at Lin Jiayao, the fear in her eyes replaced by confusion.

Why… was this artificial god helping her?

She knew this wasn’t Dhṛtarāṣṭra, or the God of Ino, but just a large, captive zombie.

But its usually vacant eyes were now focused on her, its expression calm, almost… intelligent.

Could it be… had the God of Ino truly awakened…?

She shook her head, dismissing the unrealistic thought.

Impossible. She herself had written the cult’s scriptures before the apocalypse, based on twisted interpretations of Buddhist texts; it couldn’t be real.

It was more likely that this zombie was being controlled.

And it was clearly expecting something from her.

She wiped away the drying mucus from her face and asked, “What do you want me to do?”

Hearing her speak, Lin Jiayao was relieved.

    Communication was possible, an opportunity.

But she didn’t understand the Japanese.

After a moment of thought, she decided to use sign language.

She pointed at herself, then at the torii gate.

“You… want those people to return?” the woman asked, frowning. They clearly weren’t on the same page.

Lin Jiayao, unsure if she’d been understood, decided to be more specific.

She pointed at herself, then at the torii gate again, and then scratched a word on the stone floor with her fingernail.

    “Run.”

A simple word; any elementary school student should understand.

Seeing the English word, the woman was certain the zombie was being controlled by an Awakened.

    Run?

    It wanted to escape?

But who would be so bold as to bypass the Ino Cult’s defenses and control their god?

She looked around, searching for the controller.

They had to be nearby; controlling a zombie had distance limitations.

“You… you want to take the God of Ino away?!” she exclaimed, incredulous.

“Then let’s go.” She tested her legs, feeling no pain, and stood up.

But the zombie didn’t move, still lying on the ground.

    Too heavy?

    She instantly understood.

Having been deposed as the cult leader, with no hope of regaining her position, if she could steal the God of Ino and spite the cult, she was willing to help.

And the zombie had just saved her life.

She pulled at the God of Ino’s hand, but it wouldn’t budge.

    It was simply too massive.

    “Groan—”

The God of Ino suddenly groaned. The woman looked at it curiously.

It raised its right arm, pointed at the rolls of fat on its stomach, and then made a scissor motion with its fingers.

    The woman instantly understood.

The excess fat was unnecessary; it had been deliberately cultivated to make it resemble Dhṛtarāṣṭra.

Besides feeding it, they’d even injected it with liquefied zombie fat.

“You want to… remove the fat?” She asked tentatively, a small cyclone forming in her hand.

Seeing the swirling air currents, Lin Jiayao gave a thumbs-up.

Although she didn’t understand the woman’s words, she seemed to have understood her intentions.

The woman, holding the cyclone, walked over to Lin Jiayao’s side.

She crouched down and pressed her hand against the God of Ino’s rough skin.

    “Sizzle…”

The cyclone, like a saw against metal, ground against the zombie’s skin, sending sparks flying.

With considerable effort, she managed to cut a small opening.

    “Haaa!”

She threw the cyclone at the small opening.

    “Pop—”

The cyclone penetrated, slicing through the purple skin.

A torrent of yellowish, white, red, and brown fat gushed out, like an oil well erupting.

    “Ugh—”

The woman, unable to dodge, was splattered, quickly discarding her clothes and vomiting.

It seemed the… substance… wasn’t very pleasant to the… taste.

Fortunately, Lin Jiayao’s senses of smell and touch were dulled; she didn’t react.

As the fat continued to flow, forming a greasy puddle on the temple floor, Lin Jiayao felt her body lighten.

Her range of motion increased; she was no longer like a beached whale, her limbs pinned beneath her own weight.

The small cut on her skin was closing, but now she could move her own limbs.

Using her sharp fingernails, she made a large incision in her stomach, her massive body shrinking drastically.

Then she cut away the excess fat from her arms, legs, and face, her movements becoming more fluid.

Gradually, she regained the zombie’s original form.

A tall, slender figure, like a Hunter, almost ten meters tall when standing upright, layers of rough, dark purple skin draped over her like multiple capes.

When she spread her arms, the skin extended with them, like a flying squirrel.

    Or a giant, caped vampire.

Lin Jiayao slowly sat up, supporting herself with her hands, and looked at the woman, still retching in the dirt.

She had helped the woman recover; the woman had helped her shed her excess weight. They were even.

Ignoring the woman, Lin Jiayao lowered herself and crawled towards the torii gate.

She didn’t want to attract attention by standing up.

After about twenty meters, she reached the gate. The extraction point was now only nineteen meters away.

Peering down the steps, she saw that they didn’t lead to the hillside, but to an old house.

    The dilapidated house looked deserted.

I’ll extract first… time is of the essence.

The longer she stayed, the more her mental strength would be drained.

This zombie didn’t seem very powerful; there was no need to waste time here.

She had hoped for a Godzilla login in Japan.

    Oh well.

As she passed through the torii gate, about to descend the steps, she heard a voice behind her.

“Hey! Hey! Want to cooperate?! You want to destroy the cult too, right? I know when they’ll be back—”

Unfortunately, Lin Jiayao didn’t understand Japanese.

She jumped down the stairs, landing on the old house with a crash.

The dust settled, and the extraction countdown appeared.

    [Extracting: 7.9]

  • Sickly Girl Doesn’t Die in Zombie Simulator 106p2

    Chapter 106: Japanese Ritual p2

Logging into zombies was profitable, of course, but the battles were dangerous and exhausting.

What’s better than getting paid without having to work?

Suddenly, fifty blood crystals seemed like a reasonable price.

But just to be safe, she asked the system.

“System, besides blood crystals, what other resources can I put in the [Zombie Loot Box]?”

    「Anything besides living organisms」

    “Even trash?”

    「Yes」

So… anything inanimate counted as a resource?

“Then if I put in a can of cola, what kind of zombie would you assign?”

「The system will randomly assign a zombie based on the value of the resource」

    “What about ten blood crystals?”

「The system will randomly assign a zombie based on the value of the resource」

This was a fifty-blood-crystal decision; she had to be thorough.

    She rephrased her question.

“You wouldn’t assign a Biter for a hundred blood crystals, would you?”

This time, the system gave a different answer.

「Any offering of 10g of blood crystals or more guarantees a mutated zombie」

“And the retained evolution from the [Zombie Loot Box]… can it be a system upgrade, like a Safehouse upgrade?”

「Retained evolutions from the [Zombie Loot Box] are chosen from the assigned zombie’s extraction results.」

“Can I specify what resources I want the zombie to collect?”

「The loot obtained by the zombie is completely random」

“If a zombie, say, a Sprinter, has had all its evolutions extracted, what do I get if it extracts again?”

「Zombies that have had all their evolutions extracted will not be assigned. The same rule applies to newly logged-in zombies.」

“Then can I just keep giving you trash and get all the evolutions eventually?”

「Yes, but the extraction time is determined by the zombie’s strength and the value of the offered resources.」
「If you use a low-value resource to obtain a high-level zombie, the extraction time could be years.」

    “Uh…”

Lin Jiayao abandoned the idea of exploiting the system.

She didn’t have years to wait.

Even the extraction times for ordinary Biters were quite long. By the time she acquired all the low-level evolutions, it would be too late.

“And if a zombie finds something valuable… will you… take a cut?” she asked, her final question.

She asked because the system seemed to really like blood crystals.

    But the system remained silent.

Lin Jiayao considered the [Zombie Loot Box], whether it was worth fifty blood crystal stones.

That was a significant amount… enough to buy a small camp.

But the [Zombie Loot Box] was essentially an extra, automated login slot, a guaranteed successful extraction, with all rewards and evolutions hers.

Like paying the system to work for her.

It would almost double her evolution rate, even allowing her to extract while she slept.

All she had to do was wait and then open the box.

But due to its randomness, it wouldn’t be as efficient as logging in herself.

The zombie wouldn’t follow her instructions for gathering specific resources.

So, it was a supplementary method for acquiring evolutions, not a replacement for logging in.

And right now, she needed to evolve quickly. She couldn’t just feed all those crystals to a single zombie; there were cooldowns between evolutions.

It seemed the [Zombie Loot Box] was currently the fastest way to increase her power.

After a moment of hesitation, Lin Jiayao made up her mind and built it.

    -50 blood crystals.

With a series of cheap, browser-game-like clinking and clanking sounds, the dust settled beside the Control Center, revealing a short pillar with a treasure chest on top.

Seeing her warehouse suddenly half empty made Lin Jiayao feel like she couldn’t breathe.

My blood crystals… my precious blood crystals…

Fighting back tears, she opened the Loot Box interface.

A simple interface, a single slot, and a larger square beside it for the holographic projection.

After a moment of hesitation, she took the bone necklace from the warehouse.

It had belonged to the B-rank Awakened; it must be valuable…

Too bad she wasn’t a control-type Awakened; it was useless to her.

Perfect for testing the [Zombie Loot Box].

She dragged the necklace to the slot.

    A system prompt appeared.

「Use this item to open the [Zombie Loot Box]?」

    “Yes.”

    “Click—”

The bone necklace dissolved into a red, crystalline powder.

The powder, within the square beside the slot, slowly formed the shape of a zombie.

    “Zzzt—”

A burst of static, and a zombie’s projection appeared.

    This is…

Lin Jiayao stared at the image, puzzled.

    What… the hell… is that?

A two-meter-tall zombie, dressed in a neat, seemingly new suit, its face a mass of tumors, no eyes or ears, just a mouth filled with sharp teeth.

Even with the suit, the tumors on its neck were clearly visible, the yellowish pus within pulsing with its breath.

It seemed to be a tall, humanoid zombie, its body covered in tumors, its face just a gaping maw.

A type of zombie she had never seen before.

Perhaps a “specialty” from another country or region.

And below the image, a line of text:

    [Extraction Time 5:59:55]

    Six hours?

According to the system, longer extraction times meant stronger zombies.

Perhaps this… thing… would yield some interesting evolutions.

As for the loot… she wasn’t expecting much.

She was treating the [Zombie Loot Box] as an additional means of acquiring evolutions.

Seeing the system was working, Lin Jiayao exited the interface and then the Hideout, returning to the login screen.

    「No.1: [Mask] (Available for login)」
    「No.2: [Unnamed] (Available for login)」
    「No.3: [Goldie] (Available for login)」
    「No.4: [A4] (Available for login)」
    「No.5: 🌐 (Available for login)」
    「No.6: 🌐 (Available for login)」

She decided to follow her original plan: densely populated areas for high-level zombies.

Tokyo, Japan, was her top choice.

She would test the waters there. Even if it failed, and she ended up with an ordinary zombie, the cooldown was only six hours.

And during those six hours, she could log into the sixth slot, or Mask, or any of the others.

She felt that even twenty-four hours a day, with her limited mental strength, wasn’t enough.

If only humans didn’t need to sleep… then she could log in continuously.

Opening the map, she noticed that Chongyu City was now darkened, no longer available.

So, there had only been that one fungal zombie there… no wonder she had logged in right next to the Voodoo Cult Boss.

Without wasting any more time, Lin Jiayao shifted her gaze to the right, towards Japan.

Locating Tokyo, she selected the city.

    “Gurgle—”
    “Ugh—”

Before she could even open her eyes, her stomach growled loudly.

    She slowly opened her eyes.

    Is this… Tokyo…?

Although it was already afternoon, the sunlight was still harsh. Squinting against the glare, she tried to move her arms.

    “Clang—”

A metallic rattling sound puzzled her.

She looked down and instantly realized something was wrong.

    This zombie…

    Holy shit—!

Even the usually calm and composed Lin Jiayao couldn’t help but curse inwardly.

Her skin was a dull purple, rough and textured, as if having absorbed all the sunlight, giving it a matte appearance.

Layers upon layers of flesh folded and overlapped on her massive body, the crevices filled with grime, and her legs, buried beneath the rolls of fat, were completely invisible from her perspective.

She could only tell her legs, like her arms, were bound by thick chains.

And judging by the distance… her head was at least ten meters above the ground…

She looked around. She seemed to be sitting on top of a temple on a hilltop, the half-destroyed structure behind her providing some shade, a small torii gate in front, too small for her massive body to pass through.

And beyond the gate, the dilapidated cityscape confirmed her location: the outskirts of Tokyo.

She seemed to be a massive, chained, purple, obese zombie.

    “Jingle—”

    A bell’s chime startled her.

It came from below the torii gate, from the path leading up the hill.

    “Jingle—”

Another chime, and Lin Jiayao stared intently at the gate.

Two lanterns appeared, followed by a procession of people in kimonos, walking slowly up the path to the temple platform, arranging themselves on either side.

What’s going on… are these Japanese survivors?

    What are they doing?

The scene had a distinctly religious feel, transporting her back to before the apocalypse.

If it weren’t for the ruined city in the background, she would have thought she had traveled through time.

The men and women in kimonos, holding various ritual objects, lined up on either side as a man in black robes slowly approached.

“偉大なる神さま伊野よ (Great God Ino).” (Idainaru Kami-sama Ino yo)

He stopped about twenty meters away from Lin Jiayao, chanted something reverently, and then knelt down.

    Lin Jiayao: “?”

    What?

    What did he say?

She only understood the word “kami” (god).

Was he calling her… a god?

Then, the procession behind him brought a wooden plank, on which lay a woman, her body bound and covered in wounds.

The woman cried out, speaking something Lin Jiayao couldn’t understand, and then her legs were broken, her body thrown in front of Lin Jiayao.

The man in black robes bowed deeply, and the others followed.

They… seemed to be worshipping a zombie.

Then, they took a long bamboo pole, lifted it together, and reached towards Lin Jiayao, seemingly scraping something from the folds of her flesh.

Like ants using toothpicks to clean her teeth.

Lin Jiayao didn’t move. After scraping something from her body, they seemed excited, bowed again, and then left.

And in front of Lin Jiayao lay a low-rank Awakened woman, her legs broken, her body covered in wounds.

    Seemingly an offering.

  • Sickly Girl Doesn’t Die in Zombie Simulator 106p1

    Chapter 106: Japanese Ritual p1

Lin Xiwan stared straight ahead, her fists clenched, blood crystal tendrils emerging from her heart.

If that young man made even the slightest move towards his trigger, she would pull her sister down and then get out of the car, ensuring he wouldn’t get a second shot.

“Where are you coming from?” Several men approached, the one in the lead asking as he pushed down the barrel of the young man’s rifle. “You can go back now.”

He could sense a C-rank Awakened, at least, inside the jeep. If the young man fired, he would be dead before he could pull the trigger again.

But he couldn’t tell which of the two girls was the Awakened. His experience told him it was likely the younger one in the passenger seat, her calm demeanor and intense gaze unsettling.

He didn’t want any trouble, not unless absolutely necessary.

“Qingzhou University Camp,” Lin Xiwan replied, rolling down the window.

“Qingzhou?” The man thought for a moment. “Are you also leaving Guangdong Province?”

He’d heard of the Qingzhou University Camp; it was a self-sufficient settlement.

It had been about four hours since the Voodoo Cult’s announcement. If the Qingzhou camp had reacted quickly, their advance team should be arriving soon.

Thinking this, he smiled. “A misunderstanding, just a misunderstanding. My apologies.”

“Allow me to introduce myself. We’re the advance team from the Panlong Plaza Camp in Fu City. We’re waiting for the rest of our group to leave the province.”

Fu City was west of Qingzhou City, and the G80 highway they were on passed right by Panlong Plaza.

    Just a coincidence.

Lin Jiayao, using Blood Crystal Vision, scanned the group; only two Awakened, including this man, three including herself, the highest only D-rank.

The combined threat of these three Awakened was less than that of three rifles aimed from different directions.

Without having to protect her sister, she alone could probably eliminate this entire advance team.

Compared to the well-equipped Voodoo Cult, these people were weak.

“Can your convoy make way, please? We need to pass,” Lin Xiwan said, confirming it was just a misunderstanding.

She didn’t want to linger; encountering the Voodoo Cult was a real possibility, and the longer they stayed in Guangdong, the higher the risk.

The man hesitated, then asked cautiously, “If you’re also leaving Guangdong, why not travel together? Safety in numbers… we’re all just trying to survive.”

His reasoning was simple; more people meant greater safety.

And if they agreed, having another C-rank Awakened would be a huge advantage.

He didn’t think they would refuse; two camps were stronger than one.

Lin Xiwan looked at her sister.

Lin Jiayao, having deactivated Blood Crystal Vision, shook her head slightly, meeting her sister’s gaze.

The B-rank Awakened threat was gone; there was no need to join them. And although she could see blood crystals, she couldn’t see into their hearts.

What if they were like the Yangzhou Tower camp?

It was better not to risk it.

Seeing her sister shake her head, Lin Xiwan said to the man, “No, thank you. We’ll travel on our own.”

“Uh… alright,” the man said, clearly surprised, his expression slightly awkward. He was now certain that the girl with the intense gaze was the C-rank Awakened; otherwise, the older woman wouldn’t be deferring to her.

He quickly recovered and forced a smile. “Go ahead then.”

Having them clear the path wasn’t a bad outcome. They would deal with any immediate threats.

“Make way! Make way!” He left Lin Xiwan’s jeep and started directing the convoy.

The convoy, which had stopped for a meal and some rest, moved their tables and cleared the emergency lane.

Lin Xiwan turned the jeep and drove past them.

Back on the highway, having passed the toll station, she asked her sister curiously, “Why didn’t you want to travel with them? More people means more protection against the Voodoo Cult.”

Although she’d had her doubts, she hadn’t questioned her sister’s decision.

“I… don’t trust them,” Lin Jiayao said. “Just a feeling.”

She couldn’t tell her sister the truth: that the B-rank Awakened heading in this direction was already dead, so there was no need to wait.

That would be even more terrifying than the Voodoo Cult’s threat.

“Alright, your instincts are usually right,” Lin Xiwan nodded, trusting her sister’s judgment.

“Mommy, Mommy,” Huayibai suddenly said, poking Lin Jiayao’s shoulder.

“What is it?” Lin Jiayao asked, then realized she’d readily responded to “Mommy.”

She seemed to have gotten used to it.

“Mommy, are the Voodoo Cult… bad people?” Huayibai asked.

    “Yes,” Lin Jiayao nodded.

“Then why don’t we just kill them?” Huayibai asked innocently.

Lin Xiwan, hearing this, almost lost control of the steering wheel. Even Lin Jiayao was taken aback.

When did Huayibai become so… bloodthirsty?

After a moment, Lin Jiayao realized.

Huayibai seemed to think the Voodoo Cult was the same as Survivor’s Light.

She, having logged into the Voodoo Cult’s headquarters through her second zombie, knew who was responsible for the fungal infection in Survivor’s Light.

    It was the Voodoo Cult.

And in a way, Huayibai itself was a byproduct of the Voodoo Cult’s “plantation” spore dispersal project; without that project, a sentient, evolved fungus like Huayibai wouldn’t exist.

So, in Huayibai’s simple mind, the Voodoo Cult was no different from Survivor’s Light. If the fungus could destroy Survivor’s Light, it could destroy the Voodoo Cult too.

“We can’t defeat them,” Lin Jiayao quickly replied before her sister could speak. “They’re well-protected against the fungal infection, so they’re still very strong.”

    “Oh…” Huayibai nodded, seemingly understanding.

    “Buzz—”

A sudden, unusual buzzing sound from above startled Lin Jiayao. She quickly activated Blood Crystal Vision and looked back.

She saw a blood-red figure gliding through the air about two hundred meters above, its wings vibrating rapidly, creating a loud buzzing noise.

    “Wooo—”

“What is it, Yao?!” Lin Xiwan, hearing the sound, didn’t brake but accelerated.

According to the road signs, there was a tunnel about five kilometers ahead. If it was an airborne zombie, they could hide inside.

“A flying insect,” Lin Jiayao said, her expression darkening as the buzzing grew louder.

    She recognized the sound.

She had just crushed one of these.

But that had been in Kun City, her home turf, controlling the Building-Tree Guardian. She didn’t have the same advantage now.

If her sister encountered it, she could probably crush it with a single punch… but its strength was its flight!

Whether in the real world or in games, flight was a powerful advantage.

“Yibai, hand me that… thing… from the back,” Lin Jiayao said, extending her hand.

Even without specifying what she wanted, Huayibai seemed to understand, turning and grabbing the rifle they’d bought from the camp.

Lin Jiayao took the rifle, checked the magazine, disengaged the safety, lowered the window, and aimed at the flying insect.

She could see it rapidly approaching.

But before she could fire, the insect veered off course, flying further ahead.

Only then, as it flew past, could Lin Xiwan see what it was.

“What… is that…?” she murmured, her foot easing off the accelerator as the insect disappeared.

The ten-meter-long flying zombie shocked her. Besides the occasional glimpse of giant fish in the river, she’d never seen anything so large, not in the sky, not on land.

“Looks like an insect,” Lin Jiayao said. “And someone’s controlling it… it’s not after us.”

She could tell; if it were a wild zombie, it would have attacked them immediately.

“Another group escaping, perhaps…?” Lin Xiwan was amazed. So there were Awakened in Guangdong who could control flying zombies; she hadn’t known that.

    “Possibly.” Lin Jiayao agreed.

She didn’t mention it was one of the Voodoo Cult’s “planes”; it would only worry her sister.

She was now more concerned about where that insect was going.

They were monitoring the Voodoo Cult’s radio frequency, waiting for them to announce their movements and commands, their usual arrogant display.

But they hadn’t heard anything, and yet, the Voodoo Cult was clearly mobilizing.

No radio commands this time? Encrypted channels?

Had they finally learned to be discreet?

This seemed like the only logical explanation.

They must have realized, after losing a B-rank Awakened, that they needed a new strategy.

The usually flamboyant Voodoo Cult, having suffered a significant loss, had become more cautious.

This wasn’t good news for Lin Jiayao.

She couldn’t eavesdrop on their plans, couldn’t sabotage them directly.

She’d been planning to counter every move announced on the radio; now she couldn’t.

She had to become stronger quickly, to prepare for the unexpected.

After scanning the area with Blood Crystal Vision, confirming there were no immediate threats, Lin Jiayao deactivated it and looked at her sister.

“Sister, I’m going to take a nap. Wake me up if anything happens,” she said.

“Go ahead, get some rest,” Lin Xiwan said, knowing her sister’s mental state was still fragile after that dream attack.

In her eyes, even though her sister was now an Awakened, she wasn’t a physical or mental enhancement type; her body and mind were still just as frail.

“Yibai, wake me up if anything happens,” Lin Jiayao said, turning to the little girl in the back.

“Mm-hmm, okay, Mommy,” Huayibai nodded seriously, her little fists clenched.

    Huayibai’s promise reassured her.

Her sister, to protect her, would often hide dangers from her.

But Huayibai wasn’t like that. It was simple, obedient, following her commands without question.

If she told it to wake her up in case of danger, it would.

Having made her arrangements, Lin Jiayao closed her eyes, her consciousness entering the virtual space.

She first opened the [Hideout] and looked at the still-unbuilt [Zombie Loot Box].

The new Hideout features were usually quite useful, especially the [Control Center].

If this [Zombie Loot Box] was also useful, she would build it.

    [Zombie Loot Box Lv.1 (Unbuilt)]
[Description: Allows you to input blood crystals and other resources. The system will randomly assign a zombie to complete an extraction. All rewards belong to the host. You can choose to retain one evolution from the assigned zombie. Only one extraction can be performed at a time.]
[Note: The assigned zombie is guaranteed to successfully extract.]
[Construction requires: Blood Crystal Stone x50]

Lin Jiayao read the description and then stared at the cost.

    Fifty blood crystal stones?!

    Out of her sixty?

    Impossible! No way!

Just as she was about to exit, she paused.

    She reread the description.

Spend blood crystals or other resources, have the system assign a random zombie to extract, all rewards hers, even an evolution…

    She hesitated.

So, the [Zombie Loot Box]… was essentially a paid, automated extraction, with a guaranteed success and a free evolution?

And this meant… she didn’t even have to log in herself?

    The idea was tempting.

    Chapter 105: Destination: Bliss! p2

    [Extracting: 7.9]

Seeing the extraction timer, Lin Jiayao relaxed, and after the countdown ended, she finally breathed a sigh of relief.

    Safe!

    The familiar settlement interface appeared.

She expertly transferred the blood crystals into the warehouse. As the warehouse filled, a sense of satisfaction grew.

She now had sixty blood crystal stones!

This last haul alone, not including the B-rank Awakened, had yielded thirty-six!

It seemed the Awakened had been carrying a lot of blood crystals, and combined with the ones from the giant insect, it had been a massive windfall.

    Jackpot!

Besides the unanalyzed blood and gore from the B-rank Awakened, she also noticed another item hidden within it.

It hadn’t been damaged, even by her grinding maw.

A bone necklace with various bones attached.

    She instantly recognized it.

The Awakened’s weapon, the one she’d found so terrifying during her initial encounter as the green bird zombie.

In a fair fight, that Awakened would have been a formidable B-rank opponent, her numerous and varied summons incredibly difficult to deal with.

But she hadn’t been facing just Lin Jiayao; she’d been facing an entire urban jungle.

And against such an unknown, seemingly invincible force, weakened by her crash, she’d been easily defeated, crushed like an insect in a meat grinder.

Although also human, Lin Jiayao felt no sympathy.

After witnessing the Voodoo Cult’s atrocities, she had no compassion for this tyrannical organization.

Although she didn’t know the situation in northern and northeastern China, the Voodoo Cult’s influence was strongest in the central and southern regions.

    They all deserved to die.

She transferred the bone necklace to the warehouse; it took up nine slots, a 3×3 space.

The added items finally made her warehouse look less empty.

The 10×10 space might not be enough for much longer.

So many blood crystals… it would take a long time to use them all…

Smiling, Lin Jiayao exited the settlement interface and slowly opened her eyes.

She felt a sense of relief, having just eliminated a major threat to her and her sister.

A B-rank Awakened who had been coming for them!

And now that threat was gone, significantly hindering the Voodoo Cult’s plans for purging the camps in Guangdong Province, unless they sent another B-rank Awakened.

Without a B-rank’s rapid mobility, even with many cities flooded, they couldn’t effectively encircle the fleeing survivors.

Before she could even look at the available evolutions, she heard her sister talking to Huayibai.

“You can’t say that! Who taught you such things?!”

“Um… the book Mommy gave me…”

    “Which book?”

    “One Hundred Years of Solitude…”

“Who would give a child such a book?!”

“You can’t say that anymore, understand? Be good.”

    “Okay…”

Besides the engine’s hum, Lin Jiayao heard her sister scolding Huayibai.

It seemed Huayibai had said something inappropriate again while she was logged in.

    She was familiar with this.

“What happened?” Lin Jiayao asked, amused, seeing her sister’s exasperation. “What did Yibai say?”

“Yibai said she wants to take Mommy on a thrilling ride to a realm of pure bliss!” Huayibai said proudly, puffing out her small chest.

She had practiced that sentence for so long; she could even write it from memory! She’d been waiting for this moment!

“I can even write it!” she added, smiling smugly.

And then she received a knock on the head.

Lin Jiayao slightly regretted giving her those books.

She’d calculated that twenty books would perfectly fill her 4×4 safehouse, five books per slot.

She’d chosen a dozen or so and then, realizing the empty space in the sack would still take up four slots, had added a few random classics to make it twenty.

And One Hundred Years of Solitude had been among them.

She only remembered Remedios the Beauty, the angel, everything else forgotten.

Hearing Huayibai quote the book, the memories returned.

Oh no, have I corrupted her?

    “Ow…”

Huayibai rubbed her head, looking at Lin Jiayao with a slightly hurt expression.

“It’s okay, Yao,” Lin Xiwan said, looking at the road ahead. “Children say silly things. Her… irresponsible mother didn’t teach her properly. We’ll just have to educate her.”

Lin Jiayao opened her mouth to speak, then closed it.

Sister, that irresponsible mother… was me…

Of course, she wouldn’t say that out loud.

And Lin Xiwan wouldn’t connect the “Mommy” in Huayibai’s words to her sister.

Her sister had been with her the entire time; she couldn’t possibly be an Awakened who had lived in Survivor’s Light for years.

It was probably some trauma-induced attachment, a way for the little girl to cope with her insecurity, seeing her and Lin Jiayao as parental figures.

Or… perhaps she’d hit her head when she’d been run over earlier.

The more she thought about it, the more likely it seemed.

After all, no normal ten-year-old would ask such bizarre questions.

Earlier, while Lin Jiayao was asleep, Huayibai had even asked, “A person’s last words are called a ‘will.’ What are their words after death called?”

The question had stunned Lin Xiwan, who had asked several times to confirm that she wasn’t joking.

    Huayibai had been completely serious.

After a lengthy explanation that dead people don’t speak, Huayibai had only nodded dubiously, seemingly unconvinced, as if she had actually witnessed dead people talking.

Lin Xiwan had shared this with her sister and, seeing her equally bewildered expression, had chuckled.

    But her amusement quickly faded.

Thinking about dead people reminded her of the Voodoo Cult’s declaration and then of the Qingzhou University Camp.

Without the Voodoo Cult, not only this camp, but also others, even Survivor’s Light, could have thrived.

Perhaps they could have even eradicated the zombies and restored order.

    “Sigh…” She sighed softly.

“What’s wrong, Sister?” Lin Jiayao asked, sensing her sister’s sudden sadness.

“I was just thinking… it would be so much better if the Voodoo Cult were gone,” Lin Xiwan said with a wry smile. “Then you and I wouldn’t have to keep running and hiding.”

“That’s true…” Lin Jiayao nodded, understanding her sister’s feelings.

So Sister also… wanted a stable life, a safe haven…

Unlike before, when she had only thought of running from the Voodoo Cult, Lin Jiayao now considered… how to make her sister’s wish come true.

If the Voodoo Cult was making her sister unhappy, then why not… eliminate them?

If her sister wanted a stable life, then she would give her one.

After killing that B-rank Awakened, and with the blood crystals filling her warehouse, Lin Jiayao’s mindset had shifted.

She no longer felt that B-rank Awakened were invincible.

They were still human, not gods.

If a human is killed, they die.

    It was a simple truth.

And killing… was something she was becoming quite good at.

Lin Jiayao had explored Kun City; there were no major threats there. Those building-trees might look intimidating, but they wouldn’t attack unless provoked.

She had even seen uninfected animals roaming the jungle during her run and flight.

And there were only two types of fungus there.

White and green, both parasitic on the building-trees, not infectious to animals, their spores harmless.

As long as she didn’t burn down the trees, Kun City was safe.

And in Kun City, her building-tree guardian form would have home-field advantage. If the Voodoo Cult attacked with rockets and grenades, the entire forest would be on her side.

“Sister, let’s go to Kun City,” she said. “They have the largest seed bank there. We might be able to grow our own food.”

Huayibai chimed in, “Yes! Survivor’s Light was planning to expand to Yun Province. The seed bank there has almost every kind of seed imaginable!”

Perfect timing, mother and “daughter” working together.

    Hearing this, Lin Xiwan wavered.

    But she was still worried.

“But… wouldn’t there be a lot of… mushrooms there? That province had the most mushrooms before the apocalypse…”

    “No, it’s safe.”

Guided by her “mother’s” mental command and pheromones, Huayibai spoke with conviction. “There are only two types of fungus there, and they only infect plants. As long as we don’t harm the forest, it’s safe.”

Lin Jiayao nodded in agreement. “Sizhou Province is above us, the sea below. Yun Province is our only option.”

Southwest Province was too close to the Voodoo Cult. Yun Province was the safest choice.

“Hmm…” Lin Xiwan, still unsure of their destination, hearing their reassurances, felt a spark of hope. “Okay, we’ll go to Yun Province, to Kun City, and see.”

    “Okay.”

Lin Jiayao nodded. As long as they didn’t encounter the Voodoo Cult on their way, everything should be fine.

She could then focus on dealing with them.

Thinking this, Lin Jiayao closed her eyes and looked at the evolution options.

    「Please retain your evolution」
「1、【Root Entanglement Lv.1 (Blue): Allows you to extend roots from your feet, anchoring you to the ground, or to ensnare enemies】」
「2、【Vascular Network Lv.1 (Gold): Increases mental strength; allows you to connect to the vascular network of blood crystal-infected plants and Crystal Chain vines, controlling the flow of nutrients】」
「3、【Hardened Bark Lv.1 (Gray): Makes your skin as hard as bark, slightly increasing defense】」

    Gold?

    Vascular Network? What’s that?

Lin Jiayao only remembered that vascular tissue transported water and nutrients in plants.

But “network”… she suddenly thought of the interconnected vines in Kun City.

Like a… plant-based local area network, using vines for communication and nutrient transfer.

This gold evolution… could it allow her to control the flow of nutrients between those building-trees?

Why hadn’t she sensed this ability while controlling the building-tree guardian? Weren’t retained evolutions supposed to be abilities the zombie already possessed?

「Settlement status is based on the final state at the time of extraction.」
「The host had already connected to the network of building-tree zombies during settlement, so the available evolutions have changed.」

Hearing the system’s explanation, Lin Jiayao finally understood.

It was because of the building-tree zombie’s unique nature.

The immobile building-tree, the Crystal Chain vines, the white and green fungi…

These plants, combined with other elements she hadn’t noticed, formed a vast, interconnected organism, a strategy for survival in this apocalyptic world.

No, calling it a “building-tree zombie” wasn’t accurate anymore.

It was like an Awakened, only… a plant Awakened.

Mindless, but also not a frenzied, aggressive monster like most infected.

An entire city, a vast, interconnected jungle, a single, massive plant Awakened – although the analogy was a bit abstract, Lin Jiayao understood.

That’s why the building-trees hadn’t attacked the B-rank Awakened initially, only creating a guardian after she’d set them on fire.

It was just a survival mechanism, a unique evolutionary path chosen by these immobile plants.

If that were the case, then not just Kun City, but the entire Yun Province, might be relatively safe.

No wonder Survivor’s Light had considered relocating there; they must have sent reconnaissance teams to survey the area.

Without hesitation, Lin Jiayao chose the gold evolution, [Vascular Network]. A chill passed through her mind, and she felt her mental strength increase.

    I see…

This evolution also enhanced mental strength, although not as much as [Vigor], still a welcome bonus.

Once they reached Kun City, she could even control the flow of nutrients between the building-trees, draining any guardians they created.

Her advantage against the Voodoo Cult had just increased considerably.

Suddenly, she noticed a “①” on the [Hideout] entry.

Had the slight increase in mental strength unlocked something new?

    She opened the Hideout interface.

A “①” hovered above the [Control Center].

    She clicked on it.

    「Upgradeable」
「Control Center Lv.2: Unlocks two additional login slots; halves evolution and death cooldown time; unlocks constructible unit [Zombie Loot Box Lv.1]」
「Upgrade requires: Blood Crystal Stone x20」

Although she wasn’t sure what a [Zombie Loot Box] was, her gaze was fixed on the “two additional login slots” and “halved cooldown time.”

This meant upgrading the Control Center to Lv.2 would give her six zombie slots, and even if a zombie died, she could log in again after only six hours.

    A significant improvement.

And the cost, twenty blood crystals, seemed insignificant compared to the benefits.

    Build!

Lin Jiayao upgraded the Control Center.

Two new slots, number five and six, appeared on the login interface.

    This was excellent news.

    More opportunities for exploration.

And with the reduced cooldown time, she could even dedicate a slot to a specific city with a powerful zombie, repeatedly logging in and dying until she was assigned to that specific zombie.

    Brute force evolution!

And she already knew where to find the most powerful and unusual zombies.

    Japan, Tokyo.

Even more densely populated than India.

And an island nation, surrounded by the sea.

There were definitely some terrifying evolutions there, unlike anything even the Voodoo Cult had encountered.

Having decided on her next destination, Lin Jiayao felt the car brake suddenly and quickly exited the system, opening her eyes.

Before she could even ask her sister what had happened, she saw a convoy of vehicles stopped ahead.

    A roadblock?

Lin Jiayao’s eyes narrowed, activating both Bone Spike Lurker and Blood Crystal Vision, the terrain map and the red highlights merging.

And from the convoy, a young man, holding a rifle, began walking towards their jeep.

    Chapter 105: Destination: Bliss! p1

    “Shit!”
    “Thump—”

With a curse, the naked Voodoo Cult Awakened rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding being trampled.

But the force of the impact still sent her tumbling, the white spores kicked up by the massive foot coating her face.

Lin Jiayao didn’t stop her attack.

As the woman rolled, she brought her left foreleg down on the Blood Mantis.

    “Buzz—”

But the mantis was too fast.

Its crystalline wings buzzed as it flew, easily avoiding the slow-moving leg and heading towards the center of Lin Jiayao’s underbelly, the circular mass supported by her four legs.

The Blood Mantis’s speed was a stark contrast to Lin Jiayao’s sluggish movements.

This body had no eyelids; she could only watch as the mantis flew towards one of her eyes.

    “Slash—”
    “Splat—”

The mantis’s blade sliced through a glowing green eye, and the oozing sap, solidifying mid-air, formed several dangling vines.

Just as it was about to attack the other eye, a long, creaking sound, like an old wooden door opening, echoed from Lin Jiayao’s twisted, branch-like limbs.

The sound made the Blood Mantis hesitate.

And then, Lin Jiayao’s limbs buckled, twisting in different directions, the massive, disc-like structure at their center, her “head,” falling rapidly.

    “Buzz—”

The Blood Mantis, realizing the danger, tried to escape, its wings buzzing frantically, but the massive disc was already upon it.

Lin Jiayao’s vision, her body now falling rapidly towards the ground, like a drop tower ride.

    “Boom—”

The Blood Mantis, pinned beneath her, was crushed against the ground as Lin Jiayao’s massive body landed, the impact shaking the ground, scattering spores and dust.

The agile mantis, directly beneath her, was pulverized, only a few fragments remaining.

    “What the… fuck…?”

The Voodoo Cult leader, who had rolled twenty meters away, stared at the massive, disc-shaped creature formed by intertwined branches and vines, her heart pounding.

She was starting to regret her plan to burn this building-tree.

She had a feeling that both the green, flying zombie bird and this giant “disc” were guardians of this forest.

The building-trees shared nutrients through their interconnected roots and vines and the fungal colonies growing on them, even animating corpses to defend themselves…

It was a vast, interconnected organism, its sheer scale daunting.

Yes, she suspected the building-trees weren’t independent entities… they were all part of a single, massive organism.

And judging by the reanimated corpse, both the zombie bird and this “wooden disc” were controlled by someone.

    A preposterous thought struck her.

Could it be… that this entire area was controlled by a single individual?

    No… that’s impossible…

She was shocked by her own thought, but the evidence pointed in that direction.

Controlling such a vast urban jungle… that was beyond the capabilities of even a B-rank Awakened…

    Could it be…

    A legendary…

    A-rank?!

The thought took root in her mind.

She imagined herself, her own abilities, and realized that controlling an entire city’s worth of interconnected flora would require… A-rank power.

    Shit… I can’t win!

    “Creak—”
    “Crack, crack, crack…”

The fallen wooden disc’s massive, broken limbs were slowly straightening, lifting it.

Two forelegs had already lifted the disc slightly, the ring of glowing green eyes beneath it staring at the naked B-rank Awakened.

    “Shit… shit… shit!!!”

A familiar terror, not the exciting thrill of battle, but the cold dread of facing an unstoppable force, washed over her.

It crushed her fighting spirit. She finally understood why the Boss had warned her to avoid Yun Province, even when flying.

    Curiosity killed the cat.

She looked at the downed “plane” not far away.

The pilot, his face covered in blood, had just emerged from the insect’s neck, confused by the dust and white particles in the air.

Obscured by the dust cloud, he hadn’t seen the massive, disc-shaped monster rising behind him, its ring of eyes gleaming in the mist.

“Don’t just stand there, idiot! Run!”

    “Shhh—”

The woman ripped a bone fragment from her necklace and stabbed it into her left arm, blood splattering across the bone.

A two-meter-tall, upright lizard, its size relatively small due to the limited amount of blood used, quickly materialized. She jumped onto its back and, like a knight on a charging steed, rode towards the downed aircraft.

The running lizard kicked up a cloud of white spores, like exaggerated cartoon speed lines.

The pilot, alerted, finally turned and saw the monstrous figure rising behind him. His eyes widened.

He scrambled back inside the giant insect and closed the bone plates.

    “Buzz—”

Black and White’s massive wings began to vibrate, the wind scattering the spores.

“Motherfucker…” The woman cursed, seeing the pilot trying to escape. Just as the insect was about to take off, the lizard leaped, carrying her onto the insect’s back.

Gripping the bone plates, she climbed inside Black and White’s abdomen, towards an unconscious, mangled figure near the back.

The figure’s arms were wrapped around a case of blood crystal stones. She needed those.

Holding the blood crystals, she felt a wave of relief, the incessant buzzing of the insect’s wings no longer as annoying.

Looking down through the gaps in the bone plates, she could see the giant wooden disc tilting upwards, its eyes fixed on her.

Like a crab straining to reach something above it.

Thankfully, Black and White was fast, quickly ascending beyond the “crab’s” reach.

    “Damn it… that was close…”

Seeing that the creature’s branches couldn’t reach them, she relaxed slightly, her pounding heart slowing.

Next time, I’ll definitely listen to the Boss… no more questioning her orders…

    “Crack, crack—”

Suddenly, Black and White lurched violently. The woman grabbed the nearest support, the case of blood crystals slipping from her grasp, most of them scattering through the gaps in the bone plates.

    “What’s happening?!”

She shouted towards the “cockpit,” but there was no response.

And the deafening buzzing of wings had stopped.

“Fucking hell…” She cursed again, her only way to express her fear.

Climbing out through a gap in the plates, she saw the horrifying scene.

Black and White had indeed taken flight, ascending rapidly to about thirty meters.

But then its wings had become entangled in the vines connecting the surrounding buildings, like a giant net.

It had been able to break through the vines during its descent, using gravity, but now, panicked and entangled, it couldn’t even move.

And Lin Jiayao, having taken the Blood Crystal Combat Stimulant earlier, watched the trapped insect from below, a cold smile on her face.

    Good… you almost got away…

She hadn’t expected the B-rank Awakened to try and escape. After all, she knew that her own strength, even in this massive form, was barely equivalent to a peak C-rank.

It was mainly her size that made her seem so powerful.

    Had the Awakened been injured?

This… was an opportunity she wouldn’t miss.

And she now had a better understanding of the building-trees.

She had initially thought she’d logged into a part of the tree itself, hence the energy transfer.

    But she had been wrong.

She had logged into one of the countless semi-animate corpses attached to the tree, kept alive by a trickle of nutrients.

There were many such zombies, barely alive, and in times of danger, the tree would pump them full of nutrients.

These revitalized zombies, naturally, wouldn’t attack the tree, but would instead target humans – they weren’t capable of complex emotions like revenge.

And after killing their targets, drawn by the tree’s sap, they would return to feed, only to be drained again, a continuous cycle.

So, she was just one of the tree’s countless tools, its guardians.

But during the fire, as one of the few mobile zombies on the otherwise barren tree, she had been chosen, infused with a massive amount of the tree’s sap, her body merging with the tree, transforming into this giant, disc-like creature.

If the threat had persisted, the tree would have likely created more of these massive “guardians” to defend itself.

After all, regardless of how much energy it expended on these guardians, the energy would eventually return to the tree.

Like the other zombies, it hadn’t considered the possibility of a unique zombie like her… leaving.

Just like the mindless zombies at her initial spawn point hadn’t questioned why a creature with a similar aura was crushing their heads.

So, she’d been turned into a guardian, infused with a massive amount of energy, enough to fill half her warehouse with blood crystals, if only it were transferable.

She wondered if this sap could be converted into blood crystals.

If so, she would log into Yun Province every day, burn down trees, and harvest their guardians.

Lin Jiayao stood up, her massive form towering over the building-trees.

But she was still too short to reach the trapped insect, and she couldn’t see what was happening up there.

She leaned back against the building-tree, her two hind legs planted firmly on the ground, her forelegs raised high, like a spider preparing to strike.

This position allowed her to reach the insect above.

She slowly closed her massive forelegs around the trapped insect.

The insect, sensing its fate, struggled frantically, its abdomen pulsing, a blood crystal seemingly falling from it.

But Lin Jiayao didn’t bother trying to catch it.

    “Crack—”

She squeezed, and the ten-meter-long insect snapped in half.

With a shriek, its body disintegrated mid-air, the human inside falling.

    “Roar—”

A massive, five-meter wingspan Blood Crystal Bird materialized, catching the falling woman in its claws, its wings barely supporting their combined weight as it glided towards the ground.

But its massive, sharp wings weren’t designed for carrying passengers; they were meant for firing feather projectiles.

It struggled to stay aloft, slowly descending.

And as they fell, a shadow passed over them.

Both the giant bird and the woman looked up, despair filling the Awakened’s heart, as a massive, toothed wheel descended upon them.

    “Boom—”
    “Crack, crack, crack—”

Lin Jiayao’s massive head crushed the bird and the B-rank Awakened against the ground, her maw rotating like a giant meat grinder, grinding flesh, bone, moss, and fungus into a pulpy mass.

After a while, the grinding stopped, and Lin Jiayao, raising her massive body, looked down at the ground.

A brownish-green puddle of gore, a mixture of earth, concrete, moss, fungus, vines, and blood.

Not even a recognizable corpse remained.

A B-rank Awakened, so easily defeated.

    Unheard of.

But not impossible. A human, severely injured in a fall, facing a seemingly invincible opponent with an endless supply of energy from the building-tree…

If anyone was to blame, it was the Awakened’s own arrogance.

Venturing into unfamiliar territory, without even bothering to bring a backup energy source, emerging from her flying transport, naked and vulnerable…

Without a readily available energy source…

Unless it was a physically enhanced B-rank capable of escaping quickly, there was no way to defeat her, not when she had access to practically unlimited energy from the building-tree.

    Home-field advantage.

After the battle, Lin Jiayao began to search for blood crystals.

She had no hands, but she had the safehouse. Anything she touched could be stored inside.

Soon, all four slots were filled.

To make space, she even consumed one of the Blood Crystal Combat Stimulants.

But she couldn’t carry any more.

    She had no hands.

After a moment of thought, Lin Jiayao, experienced in controlling various non-humanoid forms, devised a solution.

Using her four limbs, she scraped the blood crystal-rich earth into a pile.

Then, she stood on top of the pile, tilted her body, lowered her massive head, and swallowed the entire pile whole.

    “Boom—”

Dust and debris flew everywhere. After consuming the pile, she stood up and looked towards the extraction point.

    「Extraction Time: 00:33:21」
    【Extraction Point: 18km】

Although the fight had been short, she’d lost valuable time.

And the extraction point was almost twenty kilometers away!

    Could she make it?

She felt a surge of anxiety, her mouth filled with blood crystals.

She hadn’t felt this anxious even when facing the B-rank Awakened. Back then, even if the zombie died, her main body would still be safe.

But these blood crystals, if she couldn’t extract with them, they would be lost.

As she straightened up, she noticed something else.

The building-tree, where she’d emerged from, now had a massive hole in it, shaped like her former body.

And from the broken vines within the hole flowed a thick, emerald green sap.

An almost uncontrollable urge to move towards that sap, to consume it, washed over her.

Even with her mouth full of blood crystals, she wanted to… merge with the tree and drink its sap.

Thankfully, Lv.2 Vigor allowed her to resist the urge.

And the pull from the building-tree confirmed her earlier suspicion.

Her current form was a reusable guardian created by the building-tree zombie.

These mindless guardians, after consuming any threats, would return to the tree, their blood crystals and bodies reabsorbed, becoming a part of it again.

If she had gone back and merged with the tree, she wouldn’t be able to extract.

But Lin Jiayao wasn’t a mindless zombie.

Ignoring the gently swaying vines, reaching out like a mother offering sustenance to her child, she turned and ran towards the extraction point.

    Sorry, gotta run.

Fueled by the Blood Crystal Combat Stimulant, her speed had increased significantly.

Each step created a tremor, the ground shaking beneath her massive feet.

The building-tree, its vines waving forlornly, didn’t pursue. It simply absorbed the remaining blood, bone fragments, and scattered blood crystals from the ground with its roots.

Like a devoted husband, working diligently to support his family, even after his wife had run off with someone else.

Of course, it had no such complex emotions.

As long as its guardian remained within the city, it considered it to still be under its control.

Just relocated to another building – many of the damaged building-trees had been “repaired” this way, their missing parts grafted onto others.

Lin Jiayao felt like a child who’d stuffed her mouth with candy, running away from her parents.

But strangely, the surrounding building-trees didn’t try to stop her, their vines even parting to make way for her.

Did they still think she was one of their “guardians”?

Not wanting to question their motives, Lin Jiayao just wanted to reach the extraction point and leave.

She hadn’t counted the blood crystals in her mouth, but there were at least twenty.

And the B-rank Awakened’s… remains… mixed with the tree’s sap, hadn’t yielded any blood crystals, which disappointed her slightly.

But she didn’t have time to investigate now; she would have to study the blood-soaked lump later.

She had a feeling that a B-rank Awakened’s remains, even just a puddle of gore, would be useful.

And she didn’t find the taste… unpleasant.

Because in this body, she felt no pain, her senses dulled.

And taste… what taste? She had none.

Without taste, without even the feeling of something in her mouth, there was no nausea or disgust.

And fueled by the Combat Stimulant, she ran even faster. She hadn’t thought she could cover 18 kilometers in half an hour, but her massive legs, each stride covering an incredible distance, made it possible. She was even faster than a Sprinter.

That was the advantage of size.

She reached the extraction point ten minutes early.

    Seeing it, she paused.

It was on the edge of a district in Kun City, near the city limits.

But it was still within the range of the building-trees and their vines, and the extraction point… was a thirty-meter-tall office building.

There was a ten-meter-wide hole in the middle of the building.

As if sensing her approach, the vines within the hole extended towards her, dripping sap.

    This… is the extraction point?

If I merge with this, will I be able to emerge in this same form later?

Lin Jiayao was hesitant; she didn’t want to lose this powerful body.

In this environment, it was her strongest zombie.

But away from the building-trees, without their sap, she probably wouldn’t be a match for A4.

She didn’t know if Mask could replace its massive head. If so, then Mask wouldn’t be a match for it either.

And Goldie… Goldie’s base form was too weak. Without controlling a powerful zombie, she would be easily crushed by this building-tree guardian.

After circling the building, confirming the hole was indeed the extraction point, she looked at the blood crystals in her mouth and then lowered her body, entering the hole.

    She couldn’t risk losing them.

Her massive body didn’t fit completely inside, making the building-tree look like it had a large, protruding growth.

But the vines were already intertwining with her body.

    [Extracting: 7.9]

  • Sickly Girl Doesn’t Die in Zombie Simulator 104

Chapter 104: Giant of the Forest

    “Rumble—”

Lightning flashed, dark clouds pressing down, oppressive, bolts of white light, like branching tendrils, striking the water below.

Something stood tall amidst the storm-tossed waves.

Even in the dim light, its shape was recognizable: the upper half of a television tower.

And around it, countless buildings, some collapsed, some still standing – a flooded city.

    “Roar—”

A ten-meter-long fish leaped from the churning water, its massive body slamming against a residential building.

    “Crash—”

The building’s old walls shook violently, dislodging several zombies, which tumbled into the water below.

Suddenly, the scene shifted. The apocalyptic rainstorm vanished, replaced by darkness.

A figure sat in the darkness, its back to the viewer, radiating a chilling aura.

As if it were the master of this realm, its presence dominating the space.

    “Rip—”

The darkness shattered, revealing a swirling mass of blood crystals behind it, being drawn towards the figure, spiraling inwards, until even this perspective was consumed.

    “Gasp—”

Wu Hejun sat up abruptly, now in a dimly lit basement.

The familiar basement where she’d kept the fungal zombie, now seemingly her resting place.

She stood up from the bamboo mat on the floor, walked to the table, picked up a pen, and started drawing on a map spread across the surface.

“Here… here… here… no one left… all flooded… the sea…” She muttered as she drew, the blue pen scribbling across a map of southern China, Guangdong Province.

Several cities were marked with blue, others with a red “X.”

The blue ink quickly covered most of Guangdong Province.

    “They’re coming… they’re coming… the things from the sea… no… they’re not the main threat…”

Her voice faltered, then trembled. “She’s coming… the reckoning is coming… I saw her again… she’ll destroy everything…”

    “Destroy everything! AAAAAH!!!”

Suddenly, she ran to the door, pounding on it, screaming. “Water! Stay away from the water! Send the planes! Kill everyone in Guangdong!”

Then, she froze, as if seeing something.

Her eyes turned bloodshot, her voice changing from terror to rage. “Luo!!! What the fuck are you doing!!!”

    “AAAAAH!!!”

She punched the metal door, sending it flying, the force of the blow knocking the subordinate outside down the stairs, a spray of blood.

    “Boom—”

    “Boom—”

A massive maw slammed into her abdomen, throwing Lin Jiayao against the building-tree behind her.

The impact rattled her already fragile body, her internal organs churning.

And she lost control of her lower body, seemingly severed in the attack.

A six-meter-tall, headless bird, bitten in half.

    What kind of monster…?

Sharp teeth tore at her flesh, and two other massive heads lunged towards her neck and wings.

She didn’t even have time to see what it was.

Is this… the difference in strength…?

If she wasn’t mistaken, that bald woman in the “V” windbreaker, the one who had emerged from the wreckage, was the B-rank Awakened the Voodoo Cult had sent to oversee the Guangdong purge.

This wasn’t her first encounter with a B-rank Awakened.

She had faced the full force of a B-rank’s ability before… and had been forced to restart.

Even now, that same feeling of helplessness washed over her.

She hadn’t even seen how it had attacked; that massive, red Sandworm had almost killed her instantly.

Is there nothing I can do…?

It seemed her only contribution had been destroying its flying transport and delaying its arrival.

Where could she go? The sea was below, the Voodoo Cult headquarters above, and behind her… the Voodoo Cult’s encirclement.

She had thought their plan to sweep through Guangdong was overly ambitious, but it seemed she’d underestimated them.

The Voodoo Cult had such massive flying creatures. With a few more of those, and a detection-type Awakened, they could locate every remaining camp in Guangdong within days.

And with this B-rank Awakened leading the charge, they could easily crush any resistance.

Radio commands, prophetic visions, aerial pursuit… they were serious…

Lin Jiayao still didn’t understand why the Voodoo Cult was targeting her, why their leader seemed so intent on killing her.

Even if she had foreseen her future strength, wouldn’t it be wiser to avoid her? As long as she didn’t harm her or her sister, why would she provoke her?

Before she could figure it out, the giant mushroom cap that served as her eyes was swallowed whole.

Just as she was about to sever the connection and return to her main body, to wait for the inevitable “Extraction Failed” message, she felt something… entering her body.

Not just the viscous fluid, but also the vines.

Countless vines, connected to the building-tree, now intertwined with her mangled body, held together by the green sap.

And the moment they connected, she felt them taking root within her, a surge of energy.

The thick, green sap dripping from above covered her, a slightly… unsettling sensation.

But the pain was gone, and her body was regenerating.

This made her reconsider severing the connection.

She saw the red Sandworm that had been devouring her retreating.

And the bald, naked woman was staring at her, wide-eyed, her mouth agape.

Lin Jiayao looked down at her body.

Countless green vines, like IV tubes, were connected to her mangled form.

No, not like IV tubes, they were actually… healing her.

    She tried to move.

    “Crack—”

The sound of snapping vines, like when she had first logged in and broken free.

These trees… they weren’t trying to kill me?

    They were… helping?

Or were they just mindless, their “healing” just an instinctive reaction?

Lin Jiayao didn’t know, but she knew this was her chance.

    “Roar—”

She roared, tore away the vines, and charged towards the B-rank Awakened.

She couldn’t outrun her; even a single bite would be a victory!

“An Awakened?!” To her surprise, the woman seemed to be questioning her identity.

“Roar—” Lin Jiayao didn’t respond, her gaze fixed on the massive, blood-red Sandworm beside the woman. She flapped her wings and, pushing off the ground with her branch-like legs, leaped.

    “Whoosh—”

The combined force of her jump and her wings propelled her almost ten meters into the air. Folding her wings, she swooped down towards the naked woman, her maw gaping, revealing rows of sharp teeth.

    “Swish—”

A flash of red, and Lin Jiayao’s body was split in two, falling helplessly to the ground. She hadn’t even seen what had attacked her.

    “Screech—”

As she fell, she finally saw it.

A massive, blood-red mantis, its exoskeleton shimmering with crystalline light, the intricate network of tendrils within barely visible beneath its thin, membranous skin.

And there were traces of green fluid on its serrated forelegs and curved hooks.

    Is that… my blood…?

This was her last thought before she crashed to the ground.

    A B-rank Awakened… I couldn’t even get close…

What would happen if it were my main body facing her?

Even using all her abilities, she would probably be sliced in half by that meter-long mantis.

It seemed to perfectly counter all her control abilities: bone spikes, spores, and pheromones.

I need to choose more offensive and defensive evolutions from now on…

She’d expected to be finished off by the mantis, but after a while, nothing happened.

“Stop pretending. Come out, I know you’re an Awakened,” the bald woman said, sitting inside the Sandworm’s mouth as it carried her towards Lin Jiayao. “A real zombie wouldn’t move like that.”

    Move… like what?

Lin Jiayao’s upper body, its mushroom cap turning, looked at the woman.

She hadn’t done anything unusual, had she?

“Your movements are too… human. I’ve fought many mutated zombies, sparred with many zombie trainers. I know the difference between a controlled zombie and a wild one.”

The naked woman tapped her temple, smiling faintly. “I can tell.”

    Lin Jiayao didn’t reply.

    She couldn’t.

“Where’s your main body? In the building? Is this your training ground? How did you tame these plant-type zombies? Relax, I just want to exchange some training tips.”

The woman seemed excited now, her words tumbling out.

    “Crack—”

The massive, white, black-winged insect that had crashed earlier struggled to its feet.

Its bone plates were shattered, but its six wings were intact.

Though taking flight now would be much slower.

    “Crack—”

And then, Lin Jiayao’s wings snapped off.

Her wings, her upper body, and her lower body, now separated, each scurried towards a nearby building.

Even the naked B-rank Awakened was stunned by this.

Lin Jiayao had learned, especially after encountering the Voodoo Cult leader, that everyone in this organization, from top to bottom, was a stubborn lunatic, impossible to reason with.

So, she hadn’t even bothered trying to communicate. Her only goal had been to reach the nearby building-trees.

    “Buzz—”
    “Boom—”

The mantis and the giant worm roared, chasing after her dismembered body parts.

    “Crack—”
    “Swish—”

Her torso and lower body were quickly overtaken.

But the wings, trailing vines and tendrils, had reached a building-tree.

“Damn it…” The naked woman cursed, seeing the wings merge with the tree.

She’d only wanted to exchange some training tips, and this thing… had just split itself apart and run.

And she had a feeling that once those wings merged with the tree, she wouldn’t be able to retrieve them… a strong premonition, especially after seeing its incredible regeneration speed.

Could those vines be from a B-rank healing-type plant zombie?

    Were there such things?

No… it couldn’t be that simple… but right now, retrieving those wings was her priority.

The Blood Mantis, after tearing apart its captured arm, spread its wings and, a flash of red, flew towards the vine-covered wings on the building-tree.

But the severed wings had already merged with the tree.

The Blood Mantis’s blades sliced through the vines and tendrils like a scythe through wheat.

    “Thud—”

The severed vines sprayed a viscous fluid, coating the Blood Mantis.

But the wounds quickly sealed themselves, new vines and tendrils sprouting.

    “Swish, swish, swish—”

The Blood Mantis continued to attack, its blades a blur.

But the “wheat field” seemed to grow thicker with every slash.

And the wings themselves had disappeared, completely absorbed by the building-tree, now a part of it.

“Holy shit…” The naked woman’s eye twitched.

Since reaching B-rank, she’d never encountered such a strange opponent.

Not that it was particularly powerful, but its… methods… she’d never seen anything like it!

How do you fight something that merges with a tree? I can’t even sense its presence anymore.

Unless I find its trainer… or burn the entire tree down.

She pulled a horn-shaped bone from her necklace and stabbed it into her wrist.

    “Thud—”

Blood splattered onto the bone, and it glowed with a crystalline light, tendrils and a thin membrane forming around it, rapidly building a new body.

A massive, seven-meter-long snapping turtle, its shell covered in spikes, materialized.

“Go, Mental Ember,” she said, flicking some of the blood from her wrist onto the turtle’s tail.

Her blood was more potent than ordinary blood crystals.

    “Gurgle—”

The blood on its tail made the turtle’s shell glow. The blood crystals within, flowing through the membrane covering its body and into the crystalline tendril framework within, converged at its mouth.

Its massive jaws opened, revealing a bright red glow, and it unleashed a stream of fire at the building-tree.

The flames engulfed the base of the tree, spreading rapidly through the vines, a column of black smoke rising into the air. It seemed the building-tree was more flammable than she’d expected.

In contrast to the fiery assault outside, Lin Jiayao was in a… strange state.

She could feel herself merging further with the building-tree with every attack, gaining more of its power.

    Each slash made her stronger.

    It was… exhilarating.

Not that she was a masochist, or into… that sort of thing… but the situation was… unusual.

This login was different. She had no memories of this zombie’s abilities; it seemed to have no consciousness, no memories of its own.

Like the Blood Orb Fungus, before it parasitized a human.

Lin Jiayao felt herself becoming a part of the building-tree.

And through the vines, she could feel her body again.

Perhaps because of the fire at its base, the entire hundred-meter-tall tree began to tremble.

And as it trembled, the white fungal colonies growing on it released a shower of spores.

The white spores, like snowflakes, drifted downwards towards the flames.

But they couldn’t extinguish the fire.

As the flames began to spread upwards, Lin Jiayao felt a surge of power from the building-tree.

    “Crack—”

Feeling her mobility return, she tore away the vines and stepped out.

    “Thump—”
    “Thump—”

Each step created a tremor, the ground shaking beneath her.

Lin Jiayao opened her eyes, stretched her limbs, and looked down.

The puddles on the ground reflected not only the flames, but also her new form.

Her body was covered in bark-like skin, dotted with white fungal colonies.

Like a giant starfish, four twenty-meter-long, twisted, branch-like legs supported her massive body. And in the reflection in the puddles below, she could see the ring of glowing green eyes beneath her circular, three-meter-wide maw.

    <Building-Tree Guardian Impression>

In this quadrupedal stance, her gaze was fixed on the ground, as if looking down on the world.

And as she’d torn away the vines, the sap from the wounds had created a green waterfall, extinguishing the flames at the tree’s base, momentarily halting the fire.

And the snapping turtle’s fire attack also stopped.

Lin Jiayao could see the B-rank Awakened below, her jaw dropped, staring up at her, her eyes wide.

    “Wooo—”

    “Click, click, clack—”

Lin Jiayao’s massive, gear-like maw rotated as she emitted a low growl.

She raised a leg, the bark-like skin cracking as she moved, showering the ground with dust and spores, and then brought her heavy right foreleg down on the seven-meter-long Blood Crystal Turtle.

    “Thump—”

The turtle’s shell cracked under the immense pressure, scattering white spores.

    “Crack—”

    “Ding—”

The turtle’s body shattered, a single white bone spike falling from the sky.

    “ROAR—”

Lin Jiayao, triumphant, roared again, uncaring that she now looked more monstrous than any zombie, and swung her massive leg at the naked woman below.
