    Chapter 54 p2

Rong Fei casually tapped her pen against the file; today’s consultation was truly interesting.

But she maintained her composure, treating Qin Qianrou like any other client, without personal bias.

“If we want to end such a relationship, what should be done?” Qin Qianrou’s voice was urgent, then, realizing her question wasn’t clear enough, she added, “I mean, how can we ensure the student isn’t hurt, but also prevent her from continuing down this path?”

Only now did Qin Qianrou realize that her earlier advice to Shen Yiqiu, to “take it slowly,” hadn’t been her true intention.

What she truly wanted was for Shen Yiqiu to end it immediately, to sever all ties with that man.

Rong Fei’s gaze deepened, and Qin Qianrou subtly masked her emotions, not wanting to be seen through.

Thankfully, Rong Fei’s scrutiny didn’t last long, her gaze returning to the notes she had been making. “Frankly, I’m not a relationship expert, but if you’re talking about minimizing emotional harm, then I have to say, whenever genuine feelings are involved, there will be heartbreak.”

Rong Fei was telling the truth, and Qin Qianrou knew this.

But she couldn’t bear the thought of Shen Yiqiu being hurt. That child had already suffered so much, why should she be tormented further?

“However, the depth and duration of the heartbreak can vary. Momentary sadness is normal, anyone can handle that. As long as it’s the student who initiates the breakup, the harm won’t be as severe.”

    Shen Yiqiu initiating the breakup?

Qin Qianrou pictured Shen Yiqiu, the stubbornness hidden beneath her soft voice, the sincerity and cherishment in her trembling confession of love. Qin Qianrou felt it was almost impossible, which was why she wanted to be the “bad guy,” to help Shen Yiqiu make the difficult decision.

“Or, if the student falls for someone else, transfers her affections, then naturally, she won’t be heartbroken over this anymore.”

Qin Qianrou frowned; this hypothesis was even more distressing.

Almost without thinking, she said, “That’s not an option.”

Rong Fei raised an eyebrow again; Qin Qianrou’s reactions today were truly fascinating.

“The best approach is actually communication.” Rong Fei looked at Qin Qianrou, encouraging her to calm down. “Qianrou, everything you’ve told me today is superficial. You’ve been describing this from a bystander’s perspective, but you don’t know when or why this relationship started, or how it developed. This approach won’t work. Forcefully separating them will only intensify the harm.”

Rong Fei was right; there were many things she didn’t know.

“But she…” Qin Qianrou hesitated. Was she supposed to discuss relationships with Shen Yiqiu again?

A sense of reluctance, a hint of avoidance, flickered within her.

“Alright, let’s stop here for today. My advice is to facilitate communication first, understand the situation fully before devising a solution.”

“But I’m afraid it’ll be too late.”

Qin Qianrou froze, her deepest fear finally revealed.

She was worried, afraid. Young people these days were unrestrained, and it was common for university students to live together off-campus. Subconsciously, she didn’t want Shen Yiqiu to do this, especially not with that man.

Thinking this, she felt that agreeing to let Shen Yiqiu go out alone with him had been too lenient and trusting.

Seeing her troubled expression, Rong Fei’s gaze turned serious. Her eyes involuntarily fell on the file of the previous client on the shelf beside her.

“Qianrou, don’t put so much pressure on yourself, you can’t control everything.”

With that, they both composed themselves and went to a nearby restaurant for dinner.

Leaving the office, Rong Fei switched off her “work mode,” and they chatted casually like they usually did.

Qin Qianrou’s mood was still heavy, as if she hadn’t fully recovered from the consultation. Rong Fei initiated the conversation, bringing Qin Qianrou’s attention back to the present.

“How is Shen Yiqiu doing lately? I heard from Xiao Wan that she’s suddenly become very studious, is she planning to apply for graduate school?”

“I haven’t heard her mention anything about graduate school, but she does want to improve her grades.”

“Qianrou, what are your plans for Shen Yiqiu’s future?”

“Me? Her future, what does that have to do with me?”

Rong Fei elegantly cut her steak, her tone unchanged, but she smiled faintly as she looked down.

“I haven’t heard you mention anything about her moving out since you came back from Hai City, I thought you were planning to take responsibility for her indefinitely.”

Qin Qianrou shook her head, how could that be possible? They weren’t related, how could she be responsible for her indefinitely?

“Then how long do you intend to let her stay? Until she graduates? Finds a job? Gets married?”

Qin Qianrou hadn’t really thought about this; she was too busy with work to consider such things. Besides, she didn’t think there was anything wrong with Shen Yiqiu living with her; on the contrary, it felt quite… comforting.

Qin Qianrou was reluctant to let Shen Yiqiu move out, at least not now.

“We haven’t discussed this, let’s not worry about it for now. I just want her to…” Qin Qianrou suddenly realized that Rong Fei didn’t know that the university student she had been discussing was Shen Yiqiu.

Even someone as perceptive as Rong Fei might guess, but Qin Qianrou wouldn’t say it directly.

Thankfully, Rong Fei was discreet and didn’t ask.

“Someone who’s still so studious in university must be intelligent and disciplined, they know their priorities and what they want, you don’t have to worry too much.”

Qin Qianrou felt there was a hidden meaning in Rong Fei’s words, but seeing her calm expression, she thought she might be overthinking it.

When she got home, Shen Yiqiu was already in her room, a late-night snack waiting on the table. But the light in her room was on, and she hadn’t come out to greet her.

Qin Qianrou sat on the sofa for a while. She had already rested during dinner and wasn’t as tired as she had been the past few days. She was sitting here simply waiting for Shen Yiqiu to come out, but she didn’t.

She glanced at the time; if she didn’t move soon, it would be very late again. Qin Qianrou, as usual, ate the snack, cleaned up, and then returned to her room.

Only after hearing her door close did Shen Yiqiu breathe a sigh of relief. She had been restless all evening, waiting for Jiejie to return, but also trying not to disturb her.

A few days ago, seeing Qin Qianrou’s exhaustion when she arrived home, she had wanted to embrace her, massage her shoulders, and ease her burdens. But even in her exhausted state, Jiejie had still chatted with her for a while, asking about her day, which had warmed Shen Yiqiu’s heart.

But a few days later, after the initial warmth faded, she realized she had been delaying Jiejie’s rest. She had made Jiejie force herself to stay awake when what she needed most wasn’t her company, but sleep.

Rong Fei was right, if she wanted to pursue someone older than her, she had to learn to be more mature. Maturity wasn’t just about outward appearance, but about matching the other person’s maturity in words and actions. First and foremost, she couldn’t just focus on her own needs, she had to learn to consider the other person’s perspective.

Not always thinking about what she wanted, but what the other person wanted.

Shen Yiqiu wanted to give Jiejie everything in the world, but now, she was learning to understand what Jiejie truly desired.

She wanted to become more mature, to be worthy of Jiejie, so that her feelings would be taken seriously, not dismissed as childish infatuation.

The next morning, Shen Yiqiu woke up refreshed and prepared breakfast.

She wanted Jiejie to sleep in a little longer, so she woke up early. Seeing the hearty breakfast that would energize Qin Qianrou for a perfect day, she felt a surge of happiness.

“Shen Yiqiu, has your class schedule changed recently?”

Shen Yiqiu, engrossed in her breakfast, shook her head and mumbled, “No changes.”

Qin Qianrou nodded, wiped her mouth and hands, then calmly announced, “Then starting today, I’ll pick you up after class.”

Shen Yiqiu almost choked on her fried egg. Jiejie is so busy, and she wants to pick me up after class?

“I’ll manage my time, you just don’t wander off after class.”

    Chapter 54 p1

Another day of meetings at the station. There was a major restructuring underway, with many departments being reorganized. Many employees were anxious, worried about losing their jobs or having their responsibilities changed.

Only Lin Shuangzhi’s team members remained calm and composed, their only complaint being the excessive overtime and the endless takeout they were sick of.

“Team Leader, can we go home early today? I’ve almost forgotten what my bedsheets look like.”

“Team Leader, I’m sick of takeout, give me a chance to go home and comfort my stomach and my taste buds.”

Lin Shuangzhi smiled wryly. “You guys, all you think about is leaving work. If the colleagues from other departments heard you, they’d want to live at the station.”

Other departments were experiencing declining workloads, leading to an excess of idle staff. Now, facing the station’s restructuring, they were all scrambling to prove their worth. However, their team was different, a unique entity within the station. Although called a “team,” their status and autonomy were comparable to a full department, and even the station directors treated Lin Shuangzhi with respect.

The team members were also exceptional: experienced professionals, renowned reporters, the daughter of the deputy mayor—a diverse mix of backgrounds and talents, but everyone was dedicated and hardworking.

The station directors admired this, placing even more trust in Lin Shuangzhi, often bringing her along to report to higher management. This, however, had led to her endless meetings and increasingly late nights.

Despite this, Lin Shuangzhi knew that after a week of continuous overtime, everyone was exhausted. A balance between work and rest was crucial for productivity; simply relying on extended work hours wasn’t sustainable.

She glanced at the work progress and, with a wave of her hand, dismissed them.

Li Wan was still in Qin Qianrou’s office, discussing their upcoming work arrangements. The Dongsheng program had been indefinitely postponed, so they had to work on other stories. Thankfully, with the increasing number of societal issues, there was no shortage of subjects for their programs, even without Dongsheng.

“Qianrou, let’s pack up as well.” Li Wan paused her work, seeing that their colleagues had left.

Qin Qianrou glanced at the time, 6:30 pm, half an hour earlier than she had expected.

“Okay, let’s call it a day.”

Li Wan casually asked, “Any plans tonight? If not, let’s have dinner together, it’s been a while since we last chatted.”

Qin Qianrou organized the documents on her desk, hearing the subtle hint in Li Wan’s tone, knowing she must have something new to complain about. The target, undoubtedly, was Lin Shuangzhi.

    “Not tonight, I have plans.”

Li Wan was surprised, even more so than when she heard Lin Shuangzhi had plans.

“You’re secretly going on a date without me?” She paused, then asked, her voice filled with curiosity, “Tell me, who is this charming individual who managed to secure a date with the beautiful Miss Qin after a week of overtime?”

Qin Qianrou glared at her playfully, ignoring her eagerness.

She picked up her bag, walked around Li Wan, and headed towards the coat rack.

Li Wan, however, wasn’t easily deterred. The more Qin Qianrou avoided the topic, the more suspicious it seemed. If it wasn’t anything special, Qin Qianrou wouldn’t be so secretive.

This meant tonight’s “date” must be a personal matter.

Thinking this, Li Wan’s curiosity intensified, and she immediately transformed into Qin Qianrou’s little shadow.

“I told you such an important secret, and now you’re going on a date and won’t even tell me, Qianrou, you’re breaking my heart.” Li Wan even put on a dramatic display of sadness.

Qin Qianrou wrapped her scarf around her neck, watching Li Wan’s convincing performance, and thought to herself, She’s a natural actress, it’s a shame she’s not in the entertainment industry.

“I’m meeting Rong Fei, she’s specifically waiting for me, if I delay any longer, she won’t even have time for dinner.”

The sadness on Li Wan’s face was instantly replaced by surprise. “You’re meeting Rong Fei? Why didn’t you say so earlier? We could have had dinner together, discuss things while we eat, two birds with one stone.”

Rong Fei had been abroad for training recently, and after returning, she had been busy with work. It had indeed been a while since the three of them had gotten together.

Qin Qianrou didn’t take her up on the offer, checking her appearance in the mirror by the door. “I’m meeting her to discuss something important, we’ll have dinner together another time.”

Li Wan naturally understood the underlying meaning, but what important matter could Qin Qianrou and Rong Fei possibly have to discuss? She had initially contacted Rong Fei because of Shen Yiqiu, and throughout their interactions, the most “important” matter they discussed had always been about Shen Yiqiu.

Li Wan watched Qin Qianrou hurrying away, a thoughtful expression on her face.

When Lin Shuangzhi emerged from her office again, she saw only Li Wan and herself remaining in the team’s area. A thought occurred to her, and she extended an invitation.

“Xiao Wan, are you free tonight?”

Li Wan was still thinking about Qin Qianrou, her mind wandering. Hearing someone call her name, she instinctively turned around, a dazed look on her face.

To Lin Shuangzhi, this looked incredibly cute.

Her smile widened slightly, and she repeated, “If you’re free tonight, let’s go… relax.”

Li Wan finally snapped back to reality. The team leader was actually asking her out, this seemed like a first. And it wasn’t an invitation to work overtime, but to relax.

This was a significant development, and regardless of what “relax” entailed, as long as it was Lin Shuangzhi’s invitation, Li Wan wouldn’t refuse.

“Okay, wait for me a moment.”

    **

When Qin Qianrou arrived at Rong Fei’s office building, she was forty minutes early. She didn’t rush upstairs, but sat in her car, resting her eyes.

After a week of continuous overtime, she was truly exhausted. After all these years, her body wasn’t as resilient as it had been when she first graduated.

She messaged Rong Fei, informing her of her arrival and asking her to contact her after her last appointment. Rong Fei was well-known in her field, and having just returned from abroad, she had a long list of clients waiting for consultations. Qin Qianrou had essentially jumped the queue, thanks to their friendship, so naturally, she was scheduled for the last appointment of the day.

Rong Fei also had her own agenda. Her good friend rarely made appointments for consultations; how could she limit the time? She had to make special arrangements, giving her ample time.

When Qin Qianrou finally sat across from Rong Fei, the secretary had just seen off the last client. Most of Rong Fei’s clients sought guidance and counseling for psychological issues. Those who could afford her services naturally valued their privacy, so there was a fifteen-minute buffer between each appointment, ensuring clients wouldn’t run into each other.

“It’s quite a surprise to have such a busy person make an appointment for a consultation.”

Rong Fei had indeed been surprised when she received Qin Qianrou’s message. She had initially thought it would be like before, just a few questions, but Qin Qianrou had actually made a formal appointment.

“You’re an expert in this field, and I trust both your professional abilities and your character. Now that I need help, who else can I turn to?”

Rong Fei smiled and quickly finished her work, filing the previous client’s documents. Just then, the secretary brought in drinks and snacks, quite appropriate for the occasion.

“You can leave now, I’ll handle the rest.”

The secretary nodded politely, bid them farewell, and left. Soon, the office was quiet.

“Have some refreshments first, an empty stomach affects your mood.”

Qin Qianrou didn’t stand on ceremony; she planned to treat Rong Fei to dinner after the consultation.

After the snacks and tea, it was time to get down to business.

Rong Fei had initially thought that for Qin Qianrou to specifically seek her out, the matter must be serious or complex. However, Qin Qianrou’s composure, her calm demeanor since she arrived, made Rong Fei slightly puzzled.

“Qianrou, what did you want to discuss today?” Rong Fei began the consultation, her tone calm and professional.

Qin Qianrou held her teacup, thought for a moment, then slowly said, “A relationship issue.”

This was somewhat unexpected, and Rong Fei raised an eyebrow slightly.

After all these years, she had never heard of Qin Qianrou having relationship problems.

“I wanted to understand how to handle a relationship with a significant age gap.”

A significant age gap? Rong Fei raised an eyebrow again.

“Tell me more about the situation, so I can offer a proper analysis.”

Qin Qianrou, having chosen to seek Rong Fei’s help, naturally didn’t intend to hide too much. However, this involved Shen Yiqiu’s privacy, she couldn’t simply tell her that Shen Yiqiu was currently entangled in a relationship with an older man.

She would tentatively call it an entanglement. In her mind, Shen Yiqiu was an innocent little bunny, she wouldn’t willingly jump into such a situation.

“Let’s say a university student has fallen for someone much older than her, someone with more life experience, perhaps more worldly and sophisticated, not suitable for a long-term relationship with a student. But the relationship has already started, and the student, still young, is unwilling to end it, what should be done?”

Qin Qianrou had thought about how to phrase this beforehand, so it wasn’t difficult to say, but each word brought back the image of Shen Yiqiu embracing her, her body trembling slightly, yet stubbornly saying she couldn’t bear to let go.

She felt a pang of sympathy, but continuing down this path would only harm Shen Yiqiu further. She had to be firm, for Shen Yiqiu’s future.

Rong Fei listened attentively, without interrupting, questioning, or showing any curiosity.

As if she wasn’t close to Qin Qianrou, as if she wasn’t interested in knowing the identity of the university student.

“How long has this relationship been going on for?”

Qin Qianrou shook her head. “I don’t know, probably not very long.”

Rong Fei then asked, “How significant is the age gap?”

Although there was a difference in status between a university student and someone already working, some couples were only three to five years apart, which wasn’t a big deal after graduation.

Qin Qianrou shook her head again. “I don’t know the exact age difference, but at least eight years.”

Judging by the man’s behavior and attire, he definitely wasn’t just three or four years older than Shen Yiqiu. The more she thought about it, the more she felt the man had ulterior motives. At his age, how could he target Shen Yiqiu?

Rong Fei observed her thoughtful expression, paused for a moment, then said, “Is this relationship mutual, or did the older party use manipulative tactics?”

Qin Qianrou was about to shake her head when she suddenly recalled Shen Yiqiu’s soft confession, her words “I really like him, I can’t bear to let go.” Each word had been heartfelt, a clear sign of affection.

Although she felt a sense of resistance, Qin Qianrou, as a reporter, wouldn’t distort the truth.

“For now, it seems to be mutual. But initially, it was probably initiated by the older party.”

She couldn’t imagine Shen Yiqiu actively pursuing someone like that. The image of that child diligently studying recipes was still fresh in her mind; how could she be so interested in an older man?

She truly couldn’t understand, which was why she had sought Rong Fei’s help.

“It’s hard to say, sometimes there’s a special connection between people. Love at first sight isn’t always without reason.”

Rong Fei’s words made Qin Qianrou’s heart sink.

She didn’t want to accept this possibility, but that didn’t mean it didn’t exist.

The thought of Shen Yiqiu actively pursuing someone made her incredibly uncomfortable.

Rong Fei discreetly observed her, then looked away, making a few notes on her file, and continued, “However, relationships during adolescence can be impulsive, and having special feelings for older, more mature individuals might be due to specific reasons.”

    “Such as?”

“Such as experiencing a major setback or change, losing their previous support system, and at such a time, they might yearn for a new source of support and reliance.” Rong Fei paused, then continued, “Or it could simply be that they’ve reached a certain age, everyone around them is in a relationship, and they feel the urge to try it themselves, to satisfy their curiosity and vanity.”

Rong Fei, pretending not to notice Qin Qianrou’s darkening expression, calmly continued, “Of course, the worst-case scenario is encountering someone with bad intentions, being deliberately targeted and manipulated.”

Qin Qianrou’s breath hitched, and she said firmly, “Absolutely not!”

    Chapter 53

Shen Yiqiu had rarely seen Qin Qianrou like this, not even during their initial acquaintance. Reporter Qin could be cold, aloof, or calmly articulate sharp opinions, indifferent and unconcerned with matters unrelated to her.

But Sister Qin was also warm and gentle, thoughtful and considerate. She had secretly celebrated her birthday, given her thoughtful gifts, meticulously planned her trip, and subtly protected her in front of others.

Shen Yiqiu was captivated by every facet of her personality. However, now, the Qin Qianrou standing before her radiated anger, and it was clearly directed at her.

So, she froze, then felt a sense of helplessness.

Shen Yiqiu’s silence, to Qin Qianrou, was an evasion.

Her anger, instead of subsiding, intensified, and she repeated, uncharacteristically forceful, “Why didn’t you answer your phone after school today?”

Shen Yiqiu looked up at her nervously and mumbled, “My phone died. I had lectures all afternoon, and there weren’t enough charging ports, I couldn’t get one.”

She was telling the truth, but not the entire truth. A chill entered Qin Qianrou’s eyes; she wasn’t satisfied with this explanation.

“And then? Where did you go after school?”

Shen Yiqiu bit her lip, conflicted. She had been dreading this question, it put her in a difficult position.

Should she tell her? Although her cousin had asked her to keep it a secret, he was visiting her frequently, and Jiejie would eventually find out. Now that Jiejie had asked directly, if she didn’t tell her, how would she explain it later?

This hesitation, however, was interpreted as a deliberate concealment.

Qin Qianrou wasn’t just angry now, she felt a pang of disappointment.

Since leaving Meng Da, she had been analyzing all the possibilities, trying to control her emotions. She had thought she could remain rational, but seeing Shen Yiqiu, her anger erupted.

It had been a long time since she had lost her temper like this, and Qin Qianrou was taken aback by her own reaction. But she was older and more experienced, she wouldn’t back down now, she simply subtly reined in her anger.

Although her anger subsided, the frustration and unease remained, even intensifying. But Qin Qianrou still held onto a sliver of hope; this gentle, seemingly innocent and kind child wouldn’t deceive her.

It was normal for young people to be curious about many things, to be influenced by their surroundings and yearn for romance, and it was even more normal for adults to have relationships. Shen Yiqiu’s problem was simply that her choice of partner was inappropriate, their interactions exceeding acceptable boundaries. These were things that could be addressed and corrected.

Although worried, Qin Qianrou didn’t think it was hopeless.

But Shen Yiqiu hiding things from her, deceiving her, that was a different matter.

“Why aren’t you speaking? Where did you go? Were you with someone?” Qin Qianrou took a deep breath, forcing her voice back to its usual calm tone.

However, the chill in her words lingered in the warm apartment.

Qin Qianrou’s questioning made Shen Yiqiu tremble, like a child caught red-handed, the feeling unbearable.

If only a simple apology would suffice, but she couldn’t, she was still struggling with whether to tell the truth.

“I went out with someone, he needed my help with something.”

Qin Qianrou’s voice dropped even lower. “With whom?”

Shen Yiqiu’s expression was complex, her eyes clearly showing evasion and resistance.

She doesn’t want to tell me, this was Qin Qianrou’s conclusion.

She forced herself to calm down, drawing on the energy she usually reserved for handling difficult tasks, to control her emotions.

She took a step back, not pursuing the person’s identity, shifting her focus to Shen Yiqiu instead.

“You disappearing without a word worries people.”

Shen Yiqiu quickly responded, “I know, that’s why I immediately charged my phone as soon as I got home.” She bit her lip, annoyed. “I didn’t realize it was dead.”

After saying this, she realized, Jiejie called me?

    “Jiejie, was it something urgent?”

Qin Qianrou paused, suddenly not wanting to tell her that she had waited for her outside the university, and she certainly didn’t want her to know she had waited for her at the entrance of the complex after her phone was off.

This wasn’t like her; she couldn’t explain it herself.

“I was planning to pick you up after my appointment at the Economic Investigation Brigade, but I couldn’t reach you.” Qin Qianrou looked away, avoiding Shen Yiqiu’s gaze.

Shen Yiqiu’s expression showed regret; she wouldn’t have agreed to go with her cousin if she had known.

The atmosphere remained tense. The temperature in the apartment, warm and inviting, seemed normal, but Shen Yiqiu, cautiously observing Qin Qianrou, saw her still frowning, clearly still displeased.

“Jiejie, I’ll keep an eye on my battery level from now on, I won’t let you lose contact with me again.” Shen Yiqiu took a step forward, her voice soft and apologetic.

Qin Qianrou’s heart softened, and she felt a pang of guilt for her earlier outburst.

She cleared her throat, composed herself, and led Shen Yiqiu to the sofa.

After a moment of consideration, she decided to use this opportunity to have a talk with Shen Yiqiu. Although she wasn’t her legal guardian, she had brought Shen Yiqiu home from the hospital, and if anything happened, she would be responsible.

“Jiejie, do you have something to tell me?” It was rare to see Qin Qianrou looking so hesitant, as if about to discuss something important.

Shen Yiqiu also became nervous, sitting upright, her hands clasped on her lap, ready to be lectured.

Qin Qianrou chuckled at her serious demeanor, her anger forgotten. She wasn’t usually expressive, but the slight smile in her eyes was enough to make Shen Yiqiu’s heart flutter.

Jiejie is so beautiful, even when she’s angry, and even more beautiful after she’s calmed down.

“Shen Yiqiu, are you busy with your studies lately?”

Qin Qianrou’s sudden change of topic puzzled Shen Yiqiu, but she still answered honestly.

“Not too busy, but I want to improve my GPA, so I’m spending more time studying than other students.”

Qin Qianrou was pleased with her proactive attitude, knowing that caring about her GPA meant she was thinking about her future. This was good, reassuring.

She tapped her slender fingers on her leg, then asked, “Have you met anyone you’re interested in at school?”

The question wasn’t exactly subtle; the word “interested” clearly implied it wasn’t just a casual acquaintance, but it was still a normal question.

Shen Yiqiu froze for a moment, then blushed deeply, the redness spreading to her ears.

She looked at Qin Qianrou nervously, unsure why she would suddenly ask this. The only person she was “interested” in was Qin Qianrou, but she couldn’t say that.

She looked at her, her hands unconsciously clenching into fists.

“No, I haven’t met anyone special at school. I don’t… have any special feelings for my classmates.” Trying to maintain her composure, Shen Yiqiu quickly dismissed the possibility of any romantic involvement with her classmates.

Qin Qianrou wasn’t surprised, but her heart sank further. From Shen Yiqiu’s tone, it was clear she wasn’t interested in people her own age. The image of that man in the motorcycle jacket, tall and with a mustache, flashed through her mind again.

“Then is there a type you prefer? Or what kind of person do you think would be suitable for a relationship?” Qin Qianrou felt she must be possessed today; these were the kinds of questions Li Wan usually asked, why was she being so gossipy?

But she quickly convinced herself that she wasn’t being nosy with everyone, she was just concerned about Shen Yiqiu and wanted to understand the situation better, she was responsible for her.

Qin Qianrou’s series of questions made Shen Yiqiu blush even deeper, her composure crumbling, her heart racing.

Did Jiejie notice something? Is she testing me? Or did she misunderstand something?

Shen Yiqiu repeatedly questioned herself, but she couldn’t find the answers.

Qin Qianrou had completely regained her composure, her eyes calmly waiting for Shen Yiqiu’s response.

Shen Yiqiu only dared to glance at her briefly, afraid of blurting out her true feelings if she looked at her for too long.

She had someone she liked, she liked Jiejie, every moment spent with Jiejie was filled with warmth and happiness. She was becoming increasingly possessive, unwilling to share Jiejie with others, unwilling to let others date her; this was something Wen Shao Ze had inadvertently made her realize.

She even secretly yearned to be closer to Jiejie, to always be by her side.

Shen Yiqiu only knew this feeling of possessiveness was intensifying, but she didn’t know how to describe it, until Qin Qianrou’s words just now had given her a sudden clarity.

The kind of person she wanted to be in a relationship with, yes, the answer was still her.

Shen Yiqiu had finally untangled her feelings. She liked Jiejie, she was no longer satisfied with a silent, unrequited love, she wanted to truly love her.

Qin Qianrou had observed Shen Yiqiu’s struggle and her every reaction, watching her frown, her conflicted expression, then the sudden relaxation, as if she had finally figured something out.

All signs pointed towards Shen Yiqiu having someone in her heart.

This conclusion, instead of making Qin Qianrou happy, filled her with worry. Love at eighteen was intense, and dangerous. If not handled properly, it could leave lasting scars.

As Qin Qianrou’s thoughts wandered, Shen Yiqiu softly called out to her.

“Jiejie, I do have someone I like, someone very special to me.”

Her voice was still soft and sweet, with a hint of childishness due to her shyness and caution.

“Oh? You’ve secretly found someone you like?” Qin Qianrou feigned a casual tone, trying to appear nonchalant, wanting to share this little secret with Shen Yiqiu. “What kind of person managed to capture your attention?”

Shen Yiqiu gathered her courage and took another small step forward in her heart. “She’s a little older than me, but she’s a good person, she’s very good to me, and she’s exceptionally outstanding. I’m very happy when I’m with her.”

When you like someone, it’s impossible to hide it completely. The tenderness and affection in your voice when you talk about them are impossible to conceal.

Qin Qianrou sighed helplessly, it seemed this child had truly fallen.

“Then, does she feel the same way about you?”

Shen Yiqiu suddenly snapped back to reality and frantically shook her head, denying it. “No, she doesn’t know anything!”

After saying this, she carefully observed Qin Qianrou, relieved to see her expression unchanged.

But she also felt a pang of disappointment, it seemed Jiejie really didn’t know anything, how could she make her understand her feelings?

It was a worrying thought, her love hadn’t even started, and she couldn’t even find the right direction.

Qin Qianrou suddenly reached out and covered Shen Yiqiu’s clenched fists, her gentle touch making Shen Yiqiu tremble.

“You’re still a student, it’s normal to be curious about and admire older people, because you’ve mostly interacted with people your own age. After you graduate and enter society, you’ll meet all kinds of people. Then you’ll realize that the person you consider special now is actually just an ordinary person in society.”

Shen Yiqiu stared at her blankly. She wanted to tell Qin Qianrou, No, no matter who I meet in the future, Jiejie will always be special in my heart.

She would never forget the moment Jiejie appeared in the hospital ward, she would never forget the moment Jiejie celebrated her eighteenth birthday with her, and she would never forget this moment, etched in her heart.

Qin Qianrou knew such persuasion wouldn’t be very effective, but at least it served as a reminder. It seemed she couldn’t just focus on work, she also had to pay more attention to this child.

“I’m not stopping you from making friends, regardless of their age or whether they’re from the university or not, making more friends isn’t a bad thing. But you’re a girl, you’re still young, so you have to know how to protect yourself, understand?”

Shen Yiqiu nodded; she would listen to anything Jiejie told her, her voice was so soothing.

Qin Qianrou looked at her, now resembling a little hamster, and gently tapped her nose. “Are you even listening to me?”

“Of course I am, Jiejie said I have to protect myself.”

Then, she seemed to realize something and asked, puzzled, “But I haven’t encountered any danger lately.”

On the contrary, she felt her life was improving day by day, even her long-lost cousin had appeared.

Qin Qianrou sighed helplessly, not knowing what to say, so she offered a subtle yet direct reminder, “You should prioritize your studies at this stage, relationships… should wait.”

Relationships should wait… does Jiejie want me to give up?

Shen Yiqiu’s heart ached again, this time with a sense of grievance.

She had finally mustered the courage to take a step forward, but she had been pushed back by Jiejie.

A young person’s blood always ran hot, and overwhelmed by emotions, Shen Yiqiu impulsively reached out and embraced Qin Qianrou.

Her embrace wasn’t tight, but since they were sitting close together on the sofa, she easily wrapped her arms around Qin Qianrou.

“Jiejie, I really like her. I also want to wait, but I can’t control my feelings.”

I love her more and more every day, my love for her grows stronger with each passing day.

Shen Yiqiu wanted to say it, but she couldn’t.

Her erratic breaths brushed against Qin Qianrou’s cheek and ear, making her feel flustered as well.

Being suddenly embraced, Qin Qianrou realized the child was trembling slightly. Were her feelings really this intense, this inseparable? She recalled the scene at the university gate, Shen Yiqiu being led away by that man, and she felt a surge of annoyance.

Shen Yiqiu didn’t let go, and she didn’t speak, just quietly holding her.

Qin Qianrou slowly raised her hand and gently stroked Shen Yiqiu’s soft hair.

“If it’s truly that difficult, you can take it slowly.” Slowly distance yourself, minimize the pain and heartbreak.

Shen Yiqiu, however, shook her head, refusing to let go.

    “Jiejie, I can’t bear it, I don’t want to.”

This was the stubbornness Qin Qianrou knew, a part of Shen Yiqiu’s gentle nature.

A gentle soul, yet always with her own firm convictions.

Qin Qianrou sighed helplessly and relented. “Then, when you go out with someone else, remember to tell me. And you can’t come home too late, and you definitely can’t not come home.”

Shen Yiqiu quickly nodded; Jiejie was finally taking charge, how wonderful.

She thought that once her cousin settled down, he wouldn’t need her help anymore, and then she could focus on cultivating her relationship with Jiejie.

Shen Yiqiu, feeling the soft and warm body in her embrace, couldn’t bear to let go completely. This was different from her earlier desperation at the hospital, clinging to Qin Qianrou like a lifeline. Now, she was filled with love, carefully cherishing and nurturing her feelings, step by step.

Only now did Shen Yiqiu realize that no one could take such a wonderful Jiejie away from her.

Qin Qianrou, seeing her obediently agree to her requests, was relieved. Being held like this for so long made her feel a little uncomfortable, and she gently patted Shen Yiqiu’s arm, signaling for her to let go.

“Alright, we should start preparing dinner.”

Shen Yiqiu reluctantly released her hold, and as she looked up, their cheeks brushed against each other, and they both froze.

Then, Shen Yiqiu’s cheeks flushed again, and she quickly looked down, afraid of revealing her feelings.

Qin Qianrou quickly stood up, unconsciously smoothing her hair, and walked towards the kitchen with her back to Shen Yiqiu, her pace quick, as if truly hungry.

However, Shen Yiqiu couldn’t see the slight redness of Qin Qianrou’s ears.

    **

After dinner, Qin Qianrou emerged from the bathroom and sat at her desk, replaying their earlier conversation in the living room.

She repeatedly regretted her behavior today. As someone nearing thirty, she had clearly lost control of her emotions. She shouldn’t have lost her temper with Shen Yiqiu, she shouldn’t have questioned her, and she certainly shouldn’t have interfered so forcefully in her relationships.

Yet, she had done all those things.

Besides the outburst, which she regretted, the rest seemed… justified. After all, that man didn’t seem like a good person. Even if he was a good person, he definitely wasn’t suitable for Shen Yiqiu.

She was still so young, how could she be involved with someone like that? Qin Qianrou felt she hadn’t done anything wrong, but recalling Shen Yiqiu’s insistence, she felt a headache coming on.

After some thought, she messaged Rong Fei, suggesting they meet to discuss how to handle this situation. Rong Fei was an expert in this area, she would definitely have better solutions.

Shen Yiqiu, after cleaning up the kitchen, returned to her room, the smile still lingering on her face. It had been a while since she had dinner with Jiejie, and although it hadn’t been an elaborate meal, she had been truly happy, so happy she could have eaten the plate as well.

She couldn’t help but replay Jiejie’s reactions today, realizing that Qin Qianrou’s anger had stemmed from her not answering the phone. Could she allow herself a sliver of hope, that Jiejie actually cared about her?

Sigh, Qin Qianrou had always cared about her, it was just more apparent today.

Shen Yiqiu rested her chin on her hands, thinking, If only Jiejie’s concern was of a different kind.

She wanted Jiejie to be just as possessive and protective as she was, to feel that pang of jealousy seeing her with someone else.

But Jiejie didn’t seem to approve of her liking someone older, so did that mean she also disliked those younger than her? Shen Yiqiu frowned, her age was something she couldn’t change, she would never be able to bridge that ten-year gap between her and Qin Qianrou.

But her feelings for Jiejie were already undeniable. Ten years, she was just a little late, they had a lifetime ahead of them, she could do better, make Jiejie forget about those ten years.

Shen Yiqiu thought about it, then sent a message to Rong Fei. Although Rong Fei didn’t visit as often as Li Wan, her professionalism and approachable nature were something Shen Yiqiu appreciated and relied on.

She wanted to pursue Jiejie, who was ten years older than her, and blindly stumbling around on her own would likely backfire.

    Chapter 52 p2

Qin Qianrou was organized and efficient with her work. She didn’t visit the Economic Investigation Brigade frequently, preferring to gather all the information she needed and make a single trip to inquire about everything. Thankfully, she had rescheduled her appointment; otherwise, she would have been busy until evening.

When she left the Economic Investigation Brigade, it was almost 3 pm. Qian Zhifei had been called into an impromptu meeting, and they had only had a brief lunch together, chatting for about half an hour. He had wanted to invite her to dinner, but Qin Qianrou had declined, saying she had other plans.

The sun was already setting, and the chill in the air intensified. Qin Qianrou recalled Shen Yiqiu’s schedule; she vaguely remembered she had four classes this afternoon.

This schedule had left a strong impression because, initially, Shen Yiqiu had complained that having four classes in the afternoon was torture. Sometimes, to avoid dozing off in class, she would eat very little for lunch.

It seemed she remembered every single complaint Shen Yiqiu had ever made…

Passing by a convenience store, Qin Qianrou went in and bought a small rice ball, then drove to Meng Da.

It wasn’t rush hour yet, and the traffic was smooth. Qin Qianrou glanced at the time; classes shouldn’t have ended yet. She parked by the roadside, took out her phone, and contacted her colleagues to delegate the remaining tasks; she wasn’t planning on returning to the station.

After finishing her work arrangements, half an hour had passed, and Qin Qianrou felt a surge of anxiety. She quickly sent Shen Yiqiu a message but didn’t receive a reply. Shen Yiqiu rarely checked her phone during class, but after class, like other young people, her phone was practically glued to her hand.

Qin Qianrou waited patiently in the car, her gaze fixed on the university gate. She spotted Shen Yiqiu in the crowd and was about to get out of the car when she saw someone approach her first.

The person quickly reached Shen Yiqiu, his back blocking Qin Qianrou’s view. His height and build almost perfectly matched the blurry figure she had seen in the darkness last night.

Qin Qianrou was now certain it was a man.

The man was wearing a black motorcycle jacket, a slightly rebellious style, and Qin Qianrou couldn’t help but frown. She couldn’t see his face, but she could see his body language.

He seemed to have been waiting for Shen Yiqiu, immediately approaching her as soon as she emerged. They seemed to be quite familiar, standing very close, and as soon as they met, he put his arm around Shen Yiqiu’s shoulders.

Students passed by them occasionally, their gazes lingering on the man, he seemed to be quite popular.

It made sense; young women were often attracted to older, more mature men. Qin Qianrou had also been a student once, and back then, the most popular figures among her classmates weren’t their male peers, but older students or young teaching assistants.

Qin Qianrou watched, her arms crossed, her brow furrowed, observing them coldly for a while, then decided to approach them. Conjecture was no substitute for firsthand observation. However, just as she stepped forward, the man led Shen Yiqiu away quickly.

Qin Qianrou watched helplessly as Shen Yiqiu disappeared from view, led away by a tall, unfamiliar man, into his car.

After a brief moment of hesitation, Qin Qianrou immediately called Shen Yiqiu. They hadn’t gone far yet, she could still catch up to them.

However, there was no answer, then a message: “The subscriber you have dialed is powered off.”

This had never happened before, and Qin Qianrou was furious, her emotions clearly disturbed. She didn’t even notice someone approaching her.

“Reporter Qin?” Zhang Meng had initially thought she was mistaken, only confirming it was indeed Qin Qianrou after getting closer.

“Zhang Meng, hello.” Qin Qianrou collected herself and regained her composure.

Zhang Meng had a favorable impression of Qin Qianrou, but she also found her intimidating, so she maintained a respectful distance.

“Are you here for Shen Yiqiu?” In Zhang Meng’s mind, Qin Qianrou and Shen Yiqiu were always together.

“I happened to be passing by after work, I thought I’d give her a ride home.”

Zhang Meng nodded understandingly, then said, “I think I saw her earlier, she rushed out as soon as class ended, said someone was waiting for her. Didn’t you see her?”

Qin Qianrou’s hand, inside her coat pocket, tightened, but her expression remained calm.

“Has she met anyone new recently?”

“Anyone new?” Zhang Meng didn’t quite understand what she meant.

Qin Qianrou clarified, “Someone outside her usual circle, or someone from outside the university.”

Zhang Meng’s eyes widened as she remembered.

“Actually, yes, I’ve seen a man coming to the university to see her recently.”

Zhang Meng knew that Shen Yiqiu called Qin Qianrou “Jiejie” and that she was living with her. Although they weren’t related by blood, she felt Reporter Qin should know about this. She didn’t think she was gossiping.

To be honest, she was also worried about this stranger, but she didn’t feel it was her place to interfere.

Thankfully, she had run into Reporter Qin today. Zhang Meng didn’t hide anything, recounting what she had seen, and the rumors she had overheard among her classmates.

Qin Qianrou’s expression turned grim, her mood darkening, but she maintained her composure in front of Zhang Meng.

“Okay, I understand. I’ll look into it, thank you for your concern.” With that, she left without further delay, getting into her car.

Zhang Meng, watching her drive away, thought that Reporter Qin’s personality seemed to change with the seasons, even colder now in early winter.

    **

Yuan Qi took Shen Yiqiu to see five or six apartments in a row, exhausting her, and her stomach was now rumbling. The expected schedule change that afternoon hadn’t happened, she had eaten very little for lunch, and she had been holding on until now.

Yesterday, she had eaten until she was stuffed with her cousin; today, she had to endure hunger. Shen Yiqiu was even more determined not to live with him, otherwise, she wouldn’t survive a month.

“Xiao Qiu, what do you think?”

“What do I think about what?”

“The apartments, of course, which one do you like?” Yuan Qi looked at her expectantly.

Shen Yiqiu thought carefully, then answered honestly, “They’re all pretty much the same, but I think they’re a bit too big for you.”

Yuan Qi waved his hand dismissively, “Don’t worry about the money, you should live comfortably if you move in, it would be awkward in a small place.”

Shen Yiqiu sighed helplessly and emphasized again, “Cousin, I’ve already said I don’t want to move, I’m really happy where I am now!”

With the real estate agent present, Yuan Qi couldn’t say much. Besides, he had never been an authoritative figure in front of Shen Yiqiu, so he couldn’t be stern with her.

“Alright, alright, you can move whenever you’re ready. But I’ll keep these apartments in mind, it’ll be more convenient than finding a new place later.”

This was true. Property prices in Meng City were constantly rising, it was better to buy a bigger place now and save money in the long run. Since it was her cousin’s apartment anyway, Shen Yiqiu didn’t say anything more, only offering a few practical suggestions regarding the layout and functionality.

Yuan Qi had wanted to take her to dinner, but Shen Yiqiu, just as she was about to call Qin Qianrou, realized her phone was dead, and she refused to stay out any longer. Seeing her insistence, Yuan Qi had no choice but to take her home.

“Xiao Qiu, are you afraid of Qianrou?”

    “Why would you say that?”

“Look at how frantic you were just now, practically jumping out of your skin. It’s just coming home late, not not coming home at all, what are you afraid of?” Yuan Qi paused, then probed, “Is she very strict with you, has she set a lot of rules?”

Shen Yiqiu quickly shook her head, anxiety rising within her. She hadn’t expected to have all four classes that afternoon and hadn’t had time to charge her phone. Her last bit of battery had probably been drained by her cousin’s two calls. How unlucky.

“Jiejie is very nice, she’s never restrictive. She’s too busy to have time for such things.”

I wish she would be more controlling.

Shen Yiqiu felt a pang of sadness, wondering how Jiejie’s meeting with Qian Zhifei had gone today. She realized her feelings for Qin Qianrou were intensifying, she couldn’t bear the thought of other suitors around her.

She wanted to possess Qin Qianrou more completely, she wanted her to be her Jiejie, only hers. But she also didn’t just want Qin Qianrou as her “Jiejie,” she wanted her as… hers.

The thought startled her, and she broke out in a cold sweat. Since when had she become so bold and greedy?

Yuan Qi, seeing Shen Yiqiu constantly defending Qin Qianrou and her eagerness to return home, could only shake his head, but he didn’t delay her any further.

He still didn’t dare to enter the residential complex. This time, he didn’t even get out of the car before Shen Yiqiu darted out like a rabbit. He had to roll down the window and call out to her, “Xiao Qiu, slow down, be careful! Message me when you get home.”

Shen Yiqiu didn’t turn around, simply waving her hand behind her back to acknowledge him.

Yuan Qi then turned the car around and left. As he drove past, he didn’t notice another car parked on the other side of the complex entrance, with someone inside.

The person’s face was hidden in the shadows, but the beard on his chin was faintly visible.

Qin Qianrou, after returning, hadn’t gone home immediately, but had waited at the entrance. Thankfully, Shen Yiqiu hadn’t come home late, and she hadn’t had to wait long.

However, the man’s interaction with Shen Yiqiu, his voice, his beard, all indicated he was much older than her.

Li Wan’s words echoed in her mind: Young girls are easily deceived by older men!

Qin Qianrou didn’t hesitate any longer, driving into the complex and heading straight home.

Shen Yiqiu rushed home, only to be disappointed to find she was the first one there.

Jiejie wasn’t home, and she suddenly felt a little sad. She hurried to her room to charge her phone, afraid of missing Jiejie’s messages.

The door suddenly opened, and Shen Yiqiu knew Qin Qianrou was back. She smiled and ran out, calling out before even reaching the door, “Jiejie, you’re back?”

Qin Qianrou was usually aloof, but it was usually due to exhaustion. But now, she was clearly furious, her anger intensifying upon seeing Shen Yiqiu.

She looked at the person emerging from the room, at her bright, smiling face, and the anger within her surged, her first words, “Why didn’t you answer your phone?!”

  • Qin Auntie, Save Me [Rebirth] 52p1

    Chapter 52 p1

Shen Yiqiu felt that Jiejie was acting strangely tonight. When she looked at her, it seemed like she had a lot to say, but in the end, she remained silent, just quietly eating the steamed eggs. But even Jiejie’s quiet eating was beautiful, and Shen Yiqiu couldn’t help but admire her.

Qin Qianrou usually came home late, so Shen Yiqiu always made small portions of late-night snacks, afraid of upsetting Jiejie’s stomach and affecting her sleep. The steamed eggs tonight were a small serving, but Qin Qianrou quickly finished most of it after a few bites.

Shen Yiqiu, at some point, had rested her chin on her hands, her gaze fixed on Qin Qianrou. Qin Qianrou gripped her spoon tightly, deliberately avoiding her gaze. But they were the only two people here, sitting so close, trying to ignore each other was just self-deception.

“Shen Yiqiu,” Qin Qianrou softly called out to her.

Shen Yiqiu, still captivated by the beauty before her, was startled and quickly replied, “Yes?”

“Go back to your room, I’ll clean up after I finish eating.”

Shen Yiqiu immediately protested, unhappy at being dismissed.

“It’s okay, I’ll wait for you, Jiejie.”

Qin Qianrou pursed her lips, her grip on the spoon tightening, her knuckles turning white, but her voice remained gentle. “You’ve already wasted enough study time tonight, don’t waste any more.”

Waste? Every second spent with Jiejie was precious. Shen Yiqiu’s eyes widened, not understanding why Qin Qianrou would say that.

She was about to speak when Qin Qianrou urged her again, her tone slightly firmer this time.

“Go to bed early, don’t stay up late just because you’re young.”

Qin Qianrou, when serious, had an imposing aura, and Shen Yiqiu couldn’t bear to make her angry. Knowing how tired she was from work, she felt only heartache, she couldn’t burden her further.

Reluctantly, she stood up and slowly walked out of the dining room. As she reached her door, she turned back and saw Jiejie looking at her.

Shen Yiqiu paused and smiled. “Good night, Jiejie.”

    “Good night.”

    **

The next morning, Shen Yiqiu and Qin Qianrou met in the living room, as usual. After breakfast, Shen Yiqiu tidied up briefly, returned to her room to grab her coat and bag, and prepared to leave for school.

Qin Qianrou was also dressed for work, but she was leaving slightly later than usual.

    “I’ll drive you to school.”

    “Ah? Drive me?”

Clearly, this was unexpected, and Shen Yiqiu was surprised, then overjoyed. More time with Jiejie, what a wonderful morning!

But her surprised expression seemed like anxiety to Qin Qianrou.

She looked away, pretending to check if she had everything she needed, and said calmly, “I have to go to the Economic Investigation Brigade today, it’s on the way.”

Oh, that’s why. Even if it was just “on the way,” it was still good to be with Jiejie. Shen Yiqiu didn’t mind the reason; she cared more about the outcome.

But only after getting in the car did she realize Jiejie was going to the Economic Investigation Brigade. That Deputy Captain Qian Zhifei seemed particularly interested in Jiejie; it was said he always personally received her whenever she went there, then personally escorted her to the door, always trying to find an opportunity to invite her to dinner.

Li Wan had mentioned these details casually while having dinner at their place. Qin Qianrou hadn’t seemed to care, not even responding, as if listening to a joke that had nothing to do with her.

However, Shen Yiqiu had taken note. But she could only be a listener, offering a polite smile at the appropriate moments.

A faint pang of jealousy tugged at her heart. It seemed many people, just like her, liked Jiejie.

But they were all better than her; at least they could openly express their feelings. Even if Jiejie didn’t reciprocate, at least their intentions were clear. While she could only keep her secret hidden.

The car was unusually quiet, so quiet that even Qin Qianrou, who wasn’t usually talkative, found it strange. She looked at the road ahead, clearly sensing Shen Yiqiu’s low spirits, a change that had occurred after they got in the car.

    “Did something happen?”

Shen Yiqiu slightly raised her head and responded listlessly, “Hmm?”

Qin Qianrou’s heart tightened. It had been a while since she had seen Shen Yiqiu like this. This kind of mood had been common during their initial meetings at the hospital, why was she like this again today?

    “Why are you unhappy?”

Shen Yiqiu was startled and straightened up, trying to hide her feelings. But to Qin Qianrou, this only made it more obvious.

“I’m not unhappy, you’re driving me to school, why would I be unhappy?” I’m overjoyed! It’s just the thought of you meeting Qian Zhifei later that makes me unhappy.

But she couldn’t tell Qin Qianrou that.

Qin Qianrou’s grip on the steering wheel tightened, and she looked away, dissatisfied with Shen Yiqiu’s answer. She was clearly hiding something, but refused to say a word.

Qin Qianrou had thought that after all this time, although they weren’t exactly sharing everything with each other, they didn’t have to be like this.

A surge of anger made Qin Qianrou retreat into silence as well, and the atmosphere in the car became even more oppressive, so quiet that Shen Yiqiu could almost hear her own racing heart.

She bit her lip, watching as they approached the university, hesitant about what to say to Jiejie. Her phone suddenly rang. She saw it was her cousin.

Shen Yiqiu quickly glanced at Qin Qianrou, who was still focused on the road ahead, and secretly breathed a sigh of relief.

She calmly answered the phone, her tone casual.

“Xiao Qiu, what time do your classes end today?”

    “Why are you asking?”

“To pick you up, of course.”

“I don’t want to go today.”

Yuan Qi seemed to be at the gym, the sounds of exercise equipment in the background. His voice was slightly breathless, but he sounded cheerful.

“Aiya, it’s not for dinner. I’ve made an appointment with a real estate agent to look at apartments, and I wanted your opinion.”

Shen Yiqiu opened her mouth, still wanting to refuse. She had planned to go grocery shopping after class and cook dinner. Jiejie might even come home early today.

But then she thought about her cousin, who had just returned to Meng City and was still staying at a hotel. He needed a place to live. And he had rushed back precisely for her. Although she wasn’t thrilled about accompanying him to look at apartments, he was her only family in Meng City.

Just helping him out, Shen Yiqiu didn’t refuse again.

She sighed, reluctantly agreeing, “Alright, I’ll message you later.”

She had four classes scheduled for this afternoon, but last week, one of her professors had mentioned a possible schedule change, so the exact time wasn’t confirmed yet. She wouldn’t know when her classes ended until after lunch.

Yuan Qi happily reminded her to eat on time and stay warm before hanging up. It had only been a brief call, but Shen Yiqiu felt the temperature in the car drop significantly.

She clutched her phone, feeling a pang of disappointment. She had thought she would have dinner with Jiejie tonight.

Now there was no chance, but she was still concerned about Qin Qianrou.

“Jiejie, are you working overtime again tonight?”

“Hmm? Why are you suddenly asking this?”

“Just… curious.” Shen Yiqiu fidgeted with the strap of her bag, avoiding Qin Qianrou’s gaze.

She was lying, it wasn’t just casual curiosity, and Qin Qianrou could see right through her. She felt a surge of discomfort, a feeling that had intensified since that phone call.

She had initially thought Shen Yiqiu had sensed her mood, but her question now seemed more like an attempt to confirm whether she would be home early, whether she would discover Shen Yiqiu’s other plans after class.

Qin Qianrou took a deep breath, trying to maintain her composure. “What about you? Are you staying at school to study after class, or are you coming home?”

Shen Yiqiu hesitated, then shook her head. “I’m not studying at school today.”

But she didn’t say she was coming home either.

Very well, Qin Qianrou didn’t ask further. Continuing would only make her seem intrusive. Shen Yiqiu was an adult, she had her freedom to arrange her own life, there was no need for her to interfere.

They soon arrived at the university gate. After dropping Shen Yiqiu off, Qin Qianrou would go to the Economic Investigation Brigade. As Shen Yiqiu opened the car door and was about to get out, she couldn’t help but turn back. Qin Qianrou was waiting for her to leave, and seeing that she seemed to have something to say, turned to look at her.

“Jiejie, remember to eat on time, don’t skip meals. And don’t work too late tonight, eating too late isn’t healthy.”

With that, Shen Yiqiu got out of the car. Qin Qianrou, through the car window, watched her hurrying away, her emotions complex.

Shen Yiqiu was a kind and considerate person, she had realized this after they started living together. Shen Yiqiu’s personality was gentle, just like her hair, but she also had her own stubbornness.

Li Wan sometimes joked that Qin Qianrou was ice, and Shen Yiqiu was warm water. Over time, the ice would eventually melt in the warm water. Qin Qianrou dismissed it as a joke, but she couldn’t deny that she wasn’t completely indifferent to Shen Yiqiu’s constant care and subtle acts of consideration.

    Her emotions were increasingly affected.

Shaking her head helplessly, Qin Qianrou turned the car and headed towards the Economic Investigation Brigade. She had changed her schedule last night, moving her appointment from the afternoon to the morning, just to have a chance to ask Shen Yiqiu a few questions while driving her to school.

She wasn’t as unconcerned about the stranger she had seen with Shen Yiqiu last night as she had told Li Wan. Young university students were highly sought after, and it was dangerous for them to be targeted by those with ill intentions.

As expected, Qian Zhifei was waiting for her at the entrance. Qin Qianrou occasionally contacted him for work-related matters, and her visits to the Economic Investigation Brigade had always been smooth. She could sense his interest, but since he hadn’t openly expressed anything, she pretended not to notice.

She always maintained a proper distance, never giving him any false hope. Apart from work matters, they rarely discussed anything personal. She kept their relationship strictly professional.

Perhaps because he was older and more mature, Qian Zhifei wasn’t as impetuous as a young man. His subtle care and concern were difficult for Qin Qianrou to refuse. He thought that such a strong and independent woman needed time to be won over.

So, he wasn’t in a hurry.

  • Qin Auntie, Save Me [Rebirth] 51

    Chapter 51

Yuan Qi didn’t look like he had been on a world tour; he looked more like someone who had finally escaped after being forced into hard labor. Shen Yiqiu watched him devour his food, a stark contrast to the man she remembered, with his moderate appetite and the faint melancholy in his eyes.

“Cousin, where did you travel to?”

Sitting in silence felt awkward. Although they didn’t have much in common, Shen Yiqiu was curious about the places that had transformed Yuan Qi so drastically. She mentally made a note to avoid those places when she and Jiejie went traveling; she couldn’t let Jiejie suffer like this.

    Traveling with Jiejie…

Her thoughts wandered again. Shen Yiqiu realized that in many of the things she wanted to do in the future, there was a place reserved for Jiejie. But she also knew it was just a wishful fantasy; Jiejie was so busy with work, how could she possibly have time to travel with her?

Yuan Qi finally stopped eating, looking at the empty plates on the table with satisfaction.

“I didn’t go to that many places, really. It’s just that in foreign countries, you can’t find authentic Chinese food. Your stomach… it remembers. After a while, you just crave it intensely.”

Yuan Qi was talking about homesickness. He hadn’t understood it when he was younger, but now that he did, he couldn’t wait to return home.

Shen Yiqiu, lost in thought, softly said, “So you decided to settle down in Meng City because you missed the food.”

Yuan Qi hesitated, then nodded in agreement.

He gestured for the waiter to bring the bill, then sighed. “Some things… you’re still too young to understand. I’d rather you never understand, the process of learning isn’t pleasant.”

Shen Yiqiu was a little displeased. She stood up, putting on her coat, buttoning it carefully.

“Cousin, you always treat me like a child, saying cryptic things, pretending to be so worldly.”

Her mother used to say the same thing to Yuan Qi. Much older than him, she had always been very protective of her young cousin.

A flicker of remembrance flashed across Yuan Qi’s eyes, but he didn’t comment. Although Xiao Qiu seemed to be doing well, he didn’t want to bring up painful memories. He knew the pain of reopening old wounds all too well.

“In my eyes, you’ll always be a child. Your cousin will always love and care for you. In front of me, you can just be a child.”

Yuan Qi put on his coat, and they walked out side by side. This time, he didn’t pat Shen Yiqiu’s head, but he still put his arm around her shoulders affectionately. She had grown taller, but he still felt she was a little thin.

    **

After pouring out her heart, Li Wan felt much lighter, although she was still unsure of the team leader’s feelings, it was better than keeping it all bottled up inside. Qin Qianrou was a good listener, she hadn’t judged or criticized, just listened quietly.

Li Wan, after her lengthy confession, still feeling restless, gestured for the waiter to bring the wine list.

Qin Qianrou tried to stop her with a look, but Li Wan smiled and shook her head. “Don’t worry, I’m not trying to drown my sorrows. I’m just feeling a little down, I need a drink to relax.”

Li Wan wasn’t a heavy drinker and always knew her limits. Qin Qianrou, who was driving, wouldn’t touch alcohol. She sat across from her friend, watching as she sipped her wine.

“Xiao Wan, although I shouldn’t interfere too much in your personal life, as a friend, I don’t want you to be unhappy.”

“I’m not always unhappy, at least when I’m with her, I’m happy, genuinely happy.” A smile touched Li Wan’s lips as she recalled certain moments.

“But if your feelings aren’t reciprocated, or if they’re not accepted by others, what will you do?”

Li Wan smiled wryly and fell silent.

Qin Qianrou’s hands, resting on her lap, unconsciously clenched into fists. She felt a mix of nervousness and anticipation, waiting for Li Wan’s answer. As a bystander, she wanted to know what the person involved would do. But deep down, she also hoped for someone to give her an answer.

Li Wan thought for a moment, then looked at Qin Qianrou with a hopeful expression. “Qianrou, if it were you, what would you do?”

Me? Qin Qianrou was taken aback, then slowly shook her head.

If she knew what to do, she wouldn’t be so eager to hear Li Wan’s answer.

Li Wan didn’t give up, pondering for a while longer. Just when Qin Qianrou thought the topic had been silently dropped, she said, “Regardless of what others think or say, if she reciprocates my feelings, I’m willing to face everything with her.”

What they would face was unspoken, yet understood.

Qin Qianrou looked at her friend intently. She knew Li Wan’s personality well. When she loved someone, she was fearless and determined. The team leader’s feelings were unclear, yet Li Wan had already made up her mind, she was clearly sincere and had thought about their future.

Only, the road ahead might not be easy.

They were in the news industry, they had encountered many such stories, and the endings were rarely happy. The hardships involved could only be understood by those who had experienced them. Even as bystanders, they found it difficult to bear, let alone experiencing it firsthand.

“Xiao Wan, I’ll support you.” Qin Qianrou didn’t offer much advice; as a friend, all she could offer was support.

There was nothing wrong with loving someone.

Li Wan’s mood lifted, having had quite a bit to drink, and she felt a sense of relief. She glanced at her watch; it was getting late. There was still a lot of work to do tomorrow, and Lin Shuangzhi wouldn’t let them leave early.

“Let’s go, we still have work tomorrow, I don’t want to go to work with dark circles under my eyes.” Li Wan pushed her wine glass away. She hadn’t eaten much tonight, but the emotional release had been substantial.

Having finally revealed the secret she had been holding onto, she felt lighter, her steps brisk. However, to Qin Qianrou, her current state simply meant: she was almost drunk.

Half-supporting Li Wan as they left the restaurant, night had already fallen. She was afraid Li Wan, in her high heels, might not be able to see clearly, so she held onto her tightly.

“I shouldn’t have let you drink so much.”

“Qianrou, I’m very happy today, truly happy.” Li Wan wasn’t being unruly; she was simply leaning against Qin Qianrou, her voice soft and slightly slurred.

“I know you’re happy.” If you weren’t, I wouldn’t have let you drink.

Qin Qianrou sighed helplessly and quickened her pace, wanting to get Li Wan home quickly.

Suddenly, Li Wan stopped, then started walking in a different direction.

Qin Qianrou, also in high heels, was pulled along by her for a few steps. When she finally managed to stop, she heard Li Wan exclaim in surprise.

    “That looks like Shen Yiqiu!”

Hearing the name, Qin Qianrou’s heart inexplicably lurched, as if all the unsettled feelings she had been experiencing tonight stemmed from this.

Following Li Wan’s unsteady hand, she saw two figures in the distance, standing very close together. But the night was dark, and even with the streetlights and shop signs, it was difficult to see clearly.

Li Wan, her vision blurry from the alcohol, might have been mistaken.

“It really does look like her. But why is she with a man?” Li Wan refused to move, leaning against Qin Qianrou, her gaze still fixed on the two figures.

The two figures were walking away, almost disappearing into the distance. Li Wan had spotted them first, so she had naturally seen more than Qin Qianrou. Although their faces were no longer visible, Li Wan’s words made Qin Qianrou focus her attention on them.

Under a streetlight, Shen Yiqiu’s jacket became visible, the same one she had been wearing that morning. Qin Qianrou pursed her lips and looked at the hair, soft, shoulder-length hair, no distinctive features, but the length did match Shen Yiqiu’s.

Qin Qianrou’s gaze quickly shifted to the other person. The man was clearly taller and broader than Shen Yiqiu, not like when she was wearing high heels and walking with Shen Yiqiu. The man’s physique was clearly male.

His attire wasn’t particularly old-fashioned, but compared to Shen Yiqiu, he was definitely more mature. Qin Qianrou carefully analyzed what she saw, but she couldn’t figure out who he was.

However, she couldn’t ignore the man’s arm around Shen Yiqiu’s shoulders, and Shen Yiqiu didn’t seem to be resisting, walking alongside him.

Li Wan was still muttering, her words slurred and indistinct.

She leaned closer to Qin Qianrou and asked, “Qianrou, did you see? Those two just now, was that Shen Yiqiu?”

“It looked a bit like her.”

Li Wan, emboldened by the alcohol, suddenly shouted, “Shen Yiqiu!”

Her voice echoed across the parking lot, but the open space swallowed it, and there was no response.

Qin Qianrou’s gaze was fixed on the direction the two figures had disappeared into. She thought she saw someone pause in the distance, and she couldn’t help but purse her lips.

However, after waiting for a while, no one approached, and the two figures were completely gone. Li Wan sighed dejectedly. “How dare she ignore me, you’ll pay for this next time!”

Qin Qianrou didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, unsure if it was drunken rambling or genuine anger. She seemed to be taking her frustration with Lin Shuangzhi out on Shen Yiqiu. Qin Qianrou suddenly pictured Shen Yiqiu’s soft expression and the helpless look in her eyes when she was being teased by Li Wan, and her heart stirred.

“We might have been mistaken, she should be at home studying.” Qin Qianrou supported Li Wan and continued walking towards the parking lot.

Before turning around, she glanced in that direction again; there was indeed no one there.

After driving Li Wan home, Li Wan’s mother took her half-drunk daughter from Qin Qianrou, repeatedly urging her to stay the night.

“Auntie, I still have some work to do, I’ll come over another time.”

“Then go back early, I won’t keep you. Don’t be like Xiao Wan, staying up late every night.”

Qin Qianrou exchanged a few pleasantries and left, after making sure Zhuo Cheng wasn’t there.

Li Wan had mostly sobered up in the car, but the alcohol had made her drowsy and languid. However, her mind was still sharp, and she was still thinking about what they had seen earlier.

“That person really looked like Shen Yiqiu, Qianrou, are you sure it wasn’t her?”

Qin Qianrou, focused on driving, paused, then said, “Probably not.”

Li Wan didn’t seem convinced. “Then call her and ask if she’s at home or not.”

Qin Qianrou didn’t respond, continuing to drive.

Li Wan, seemingly not noticing Qin Qianrou’s silence, took out her phone.

“I’ll message her and ask. It’s one thing for a kid to sneak out at night, but being with some random man is unacceptable.”

These days, news stories about young girls being deceived by men were countless. Although Li Wan often teased and occasionally picked on Shen Yiqiu, she genuinely cared about her.

Subconsciously, Li Wan felt that, with Shen Yiqiu having lost her parents’ protection, they, as older sisters, should look out for her.

Just as she took out her phone, Qin Qianrou spoke, “Let’s not disturb her studies, I’ll ask her when I get home.”

Li Wan looked at her, puzzled, and asked, “What if she’s still out there? What time will it be by the time you get home? She might already be in trouble.”

Having had a few drinks, and being in front of Qin Qianrou, Li Wan was more relaxed and less guarded in her speech.

Qin Qianrou’s grip on the steering wheel tightened, then loosened. After a moment, she finally relented. “Then you ask.”

Li Wan found Qin Qianrou’s reaction a bit strange, but she didn’t dwell on it, finding it amusing. It was just a message, why so hesitant?

“Shen Yiqiu, where are you now?” Li Wan sent a voice message.

    Shen Yiqiu replied quickly.

    Qin Qianrou instinctively slowed down.

Li Wan, seeing this, breathed a sigh of relief and reported to Qin Qianrou, “She said she’s at home.”

The car sped up slightly, and Li Wan, thinking about it, was about to send another message.

“Didn’t you already get your answer? What are you still thinking about?”

“I’ll just casually ask where she went tonight.”

This time, Qin Qianrou’s objection was more direct, “Xiao Wan, she’s an adult, she has the freedom to do what she wants. Since we’ve confirmed she’s home and safe, we shouldn’t interfere too much.”

Li Wan agreed, put away her phone, and returned to her languid state.

“I’m starting to understand the difficulties of being a parent. Worried, but also afraid of being too controlling and making the child resentful.”

Qin Qianrou chuckled, “Found someone you like, and you’re already thinking about being a parent?”

The implication being that Li Wan was thinking about settling down.

Li Wan, no longer tipsy, blushed slightly.

She said, slightly embarrassed, “Qianrou, please don’t tell anyone at the station tomorrow. If she finds out about my feelings, I don’t know how I’ll face her anymore.”

Qin Qianrou glanced at her friend, who was now acting like a shy and flustered young girl.

It was as if they were back in their youth, love a flickering flame in their hearts, yearning for it to burn brightly, yet afraid of its intensity, afraid of being consumed.

    “I’ll keep your secret.”

Qin Qianrou thought to herself, Does Xiao Wan intend to keep her feelings hidden forever? She’s only hurting herself.

But she was just a bystander, she had no right to interfere, she could only hope that one day, their feelings would be reciprocated.

Reciprocated feelings, the thought made Qin Qianrou’s breath catch in her throat.

    **

When she got home, it was around the same time as her usual late nights. Just as she put down her bag, she heard sounds coming from the kitchen. Unusually, the main light in the living room was on, and the apartment was brightly lit.

Qin Qianrou entered the dining room and saw Shen Yiqiu in an apron, carrying something from the kitchen.

“Perfect timing, I just finished making steamed eggs, come try some.” Shen Yiqiu’s face was bright with joy, happy that Qin Qianrou was home.

Qin Qianrou’s gaze, however, wasn’t on the steamed eggs, but on Shen Yiqiu.

It had been a while since they had seen each other at this time of day, let alone being observed so intently by Qin Qianrou. Shen Yiqiu fidgeted, her hands clasped by her sides, nervously clutching the edges of her apron.

“You’re so busy with your studies, you don’t have to make these for me.” Qin Qianrou didn’t want Shen Yiqiu to overwork herself; she could use that time to sleep, relax, or just unwind.

Shen Yiqiu’s expression faltered, and she softly said, “Jiejie, you don’t like the food I make?”

Qin Qianrou, seeing her nervousness, softened her tone and explained, “I like it very much, I just don’t want you to tire yourself out.”

Students nowadays had it harder than before, even after graduating for so many years, Qin Qianrou understood this.

Hearing that Jiejie liked her cooking, Shen Yiqiu couldn’t help but smile.

“I’m not tired at all, I’m happiest when I’m preparing a late-night snack for you.” This was her anticipation, her motivation.

Even if she couldn’t have anything more with Jiejie, being able to do something for her made her happy.

Qin Qianrou looked at her intently, her lips parting slightly a few times, but she didn’t say anything.

Shen Yiqiu took two steps forward, gently pulling her hand, leading her to the dining table and seating her.

“Eat it while it’s hot, steamed eggs aren’t as delicious when they’re cold.”

She had used a new topping today, something she had learned at the restaurant tonight.

She anxiously watched as Qin Qianrou took a small bite, afraid she might not like this new attempt, but thankfully, Jiejie gave her a satisfied smile.

“I can’t finish this all by myself, want to join me?”

Shen Yiqiu shook her head, answering honestly, “No, I ate too much tonight.”

She had eaten a lot with Yuan Qi. She hadn’t felt it at the time, but after leaving the restaurant, she had almost been overwhelmed. Her cousin had wanted to take a walk to aid digestion, but Shen Yiqiu had refused.

Not only was it cold and windy, but she also had to rush back to prepare the late-night snack for Jiejie. Yuan Qi had been attentive and caring throughout the evening, but when it came to taking her home, he had stopped at the entrance of the residential complex without hesitation.

He seemed reluctant to enter, as if afraid of running into someone. He kept looking around, which amused Shen Yiqiu.

Qin Qianrou, eating the steamed eggs, as if remembering something, casually asked, “Did you make any new dishes for dinner tonight?”

It had been a while since Qin Qianrou had dinner at home, naturally, it had also been a while since they discussed recipes.

Shen Yiqiu shook her head. “I ate out tonight, I didn’t cook.”

She thought, Could it be that Jiejie finished her work early and can finally have dinner at home? Shen Yiqiu’s thoughts wandered, already planning her next trip to the supermarket, completely oblivious to the subtle change in Qin Qianrou’s expression.

After a moment, Qin Qianrou calmly said, “I rarely hear you say you’re stuffed from eating at the cafeteria, and have their opening hours been extended?”

The cafeteria at Meng Da usually closed at 6 pm, and after 5 pm, there weren’t many options left, just noodles and snacks. Shen Yiqiu had complained before that if she went too late, there was nothing left to eat, so it was better not to go at all.

“Uh, I didn’t eat at the cafeteria.” Shen Yiqiu hesitated slightly, carefully observing Qin Qianrou. Seeing no particular reaction, she continued, “I had dinner with a friend outside.”

Qin Qianrou nodded and didn’t ask further.

Shen Yiqiu breathed a sigh of relief. She had been worried about how to answer if Jiejie asked who she had dinner with.

She didn’t want to lie to Jiejie, but she didn’t want to mention her cousin either. Even if Yuan Qi hadn’t asked her to keep it a secret, she still wouldn’t have wanted to bring him up in front of Qin Qianrou. When Yuan Qi had dropped her off at the entrance of the complex tonight and left immediately, Shen Yiqiu had felt a secret sense of delight.

That way, her cousin wouldn’t run into Jiejie.

She belatedly realized she didn’t want them to meet.

  • Qin Auntie, Save Me [Rebirth] 50

    Chapter 50

Yuan Qi wasn’t surprised by Shen Yiqiu’s refusal, remaining remarkably calm, as if he had anticipated her response.

“Xiao Qiu, I know you’re comfortable with your current living situation. Frequent changes aren’t ideal, but we should also consider the future.”

The future? Shen Yiqiu thought, I also want to live with Jiejie in the future. Unless she starts her own family or changes her living situation, then I’ll have to step back.

The thought made her feel a pang of sadness. Just imagining it made her uncomfortable; she really didn’t want Qin Qianrou living with someone else.

Yuan Qi’s patience had improved considerably. He had grown a beard, but his tone was still as gentle and kind as before.

“I’ve made inquiries, I know you’re living with Qianrou now. Imposing on others for so long isn’t ideal.” He spoke casually, as if having already learned quite a bit before coming to see Shen Yiqiu.

He paused, then continued, “Besides, she’s so busy with work, she can’t really take care of you properly. When I’ve settled down in Meng City, you can come live with me, how about that?”

From his tone, he wasn’t in a hurry for Shen Yiqiu to move out. He must have just returned and still had many things to take care of.

However, this wasn’t Shen Yiqiu’s focus. She noticed that her cousin had called Jiejie “Qianrou,” which matched her memories from her past life. She immediately recalled the connection between her cousin and Qin Qianrou. Although she didn’t know the details, she understood they knew each other.

“Jiejie isn’t that busy.” And I don’t need her to take care of me anymore. I want to take care of her, Jiejie works so hard.

Shen Yiqiu didn’t voice her thoughts, feeling a complex mix of emotions towards her cousin. He was her only remaining close relative, and his concern and care were genuine. Shen Yiqiu couldn’t be indifferent to this, but his sudden appearance made her feel a little uncomfortable.

“She’s not busy? Working overtime so late every day, only coming home to sleep.” Yuan Qi shook his head, seemingly recalling something, then added casually, “But that’s just her personality, when she’s focused on something, she’ll dedicate herself completely, no matter the cost.”

It sounded like a distant memory, but Shen Yiqiu’s heart tightened, the discomfort growing.

She probed, “Cousin, are you very close to Jiejie?”

Yuan Qi collected his thoughts and looked at Shen Yiqiu, who had grown so much taller, his gaze filled with affection and tenderness.

“Why are you calling Qianrou ‘Jiejie?’ She’s the same generation as me, that’s not the right way to address her.”

The implication being that she should call her “Auntie.”

Not long ago, she had indeed done that. However, things were different now, and Shen Yiqiu wasn’t willing to change her form of address.

She pursed her lips and softly explained, “Jiejie is so young and beautiful, calling her ‘Auntie’ doesn’t sound right.” She smiled faintly, her tone warm. “Besides, Jiejie said we’re friends, so calling her ‘Jiejie’ is fine.”

Yuan Qi patted his forehead in exasperation. “Xiao Qiu, you’re truly amazing, managing to bring that ice queen Qianrou down to earth.” He suddenly became interested, a familiar mischievous look appearing on his face. “Tell me, how did she react when you called her ‘Jiejie’?”

Shen Yiqiu pursed her lips and calmly replied, “She didn’t react much. Just… normal.”

Yuan Qi thoughtfully stroked his neatly trimmed beard, deciding not to press the issue for now.

Shen Yiqiu couldn’t resist asking again, “Are you and Jiejie very close?”

Yuan Qi answered truthfully, “We used to be, but we haven’t been in contact these past few years. I’m probably not as close to her as you are now.”

Shen Yiqiu felt a sense of relief, the knot in her heart loosening slightly.

Knowing Shen Yiqiu’s stance, Yuan Qi understood he couldn’t persuade her today, but he wasn’t in a hurry. He planned to settle down in Meng City permanently, so he had to find a place first before bringing Xiao Qiu over.

“Alright, we’ll talk about moving later, let’s go eat first. By the way, Xiao Qiu, give me your number, so it’ll be easier for me to contact you.” With that, Yuan Qi led Shen Yiqiu towards a restaurant outside the university.

Shen Yiqiu called her advisor to explain the situation, then followed her cousin out of the campus. Zhang Meng and her classmates were just returning from outside and almost bumped into Shen Yiqiu. However, Yuan Qi had his arm around her, whispering something, so they didn’t see each other.

Zhang Meng turned back, puzzled, watching their retreating figures, then a classmate nudged her.

    “What are you looking at?”

“Have you seen that man before?”

“No way, he’s clearly not a student. And with his attire and his age, he’s probably here to pick up girls.”

Zhang Meng’s expression turned serious. She hadn’t interacted much with Shen Yiqiu lately, but she was still concerned about her.

“Let’s go, why are you spacing out every time you see a man? Be careful, we’ll tell Gu Chao.”

Zhang Meng glared at them and said irritably, “Am I that kind of person?”

Although she started walking, she kept looking back, still feeling uneasy.

However, they were already gone, but the image of Yuan Qi’s arm around Shen Yiqiu lingered in her mind. Zhang Meng thought of Shen Yiqiu’s innocence, her kindness, her gentle and approachable nature. Such a sweet and lovely girl, she mustn’t be deceived by those bad men out there.

Yuan Qi wasn’t familiar with the area around the university, so he let Shen Yiqiu choose the restaurant. After ordering, he tapped his fingers on the table, seemingly in a good mood.

Although he had been devastated when he learned about the Shen family’s tragedy, thankfully, Shen Yiqiu was still alive. He had rushed back, filled with anxiety along the way, afraid of seeing a heartbroken and lifeless Xiao Qiu.

However, everything was much better than he had expected. He had always been optimistic by nature, sadness was just a fleeting emotion, as long as there was hope, the future was bright.

“Xiao Qiu, let’s keep my visit a secret for now, okay?”

Yuan Qi’s sudden request puzzled Shen Yiqiu.

“Don’t tell your Sister Qin yet.”

    “Why?”

Yuan Qi’s expression turned strange, a hint of hesitation and reluctance in his eyes.

“She’s so busy, no need to bother her with such a small matter. When everything is settled, I’ll formally visit her.”

Shen Yiqiu felt her cousin’s excuse wasn’t very convincing, but she also didn’t want Jiejie to meet her cousin so soon. She didn’t even want Jiejie to know he was back.

In this regard, she and Yuan Qi were on the same page.

She readily agreed, and Yuan Qi, smiling, reached out to pat her head, like he used to when she was a child, but Shen Yiqiu dodged his hand.

“Cousin, I’m all grown up now, why are you still patting my head?!”

“Alright, alright, Xiao Qiu is all grown up.”

Yuan Qi lowered his hand, but the affection and pride in his eyes were evident.

However, this interaction seemed strange to the surrounding students. They couldn’t see their expressions clearly from their angle, but they could still get a general idea. Seeing such a pairing, their first thought was of an older man preying on a young girl.

Yuan Qi seemed reluctant to part with Shen Yiqiu, not only having lunch with her, but also wanting to have dinner together.

“Cousin, I have class this afternoon, at least two more hours until it ends. Let’s skip dinner, we can have it another time.”

“That won’t do, we just had a simple lunch, we’ll have a proper dinner in the city tonight. You have your cousin now, your life should improve.”

Shen Yiqiu thought to herself, My life is already pretty good. And she wanted to go to the supermarket to buy groceries and make a late-night snack for Jiejie.

Yuan Qi was insistent but not forceful. Shen Yiqiu was easily persuaded by gentle requests, and she knew he was trying to make amends. This feeling of regret and the desire to compensate were often strongest during the initial reunion, and Shen Yiqiu, unable to refuse him, agreed.

After her afternoon lecture, as she emerged from the lecture hall, she ran into Zhang Meng coming down from a classroom upstairs.

“Shen Yiqiu.” Zhang Meng hurried over. “Going to the study hall together later?”

They sometimes studied together, and Zhang Meng assumed today would be no different.

“Senior, I’m not going to the study hall today, I’m going home.”

Zhang Meng was surprised, and a little curious. “You’re going home alone?”

“Ah, I have plans with someone.”

Shen Yiqiu didn’t elaborate, she rarely mentioned her family. Having finally returned to a quiet life, she didn’t want her family matters to attract attention again.

Outside the university gate, Yuan Qi, having received her message, was already waiting. Seeing her emerge, he waved, signaling for her to get in the car. It wasn’t too late to go to the city center now, but later, the traffic would be heavy.

    **

Qin Qianrou, as usual, worked until almost nightfall. The temperature had dropped significantly today, a cold wind blowing. Meng City became cold and damp after late autumn, and the cold waves were particularly unpleasant.

She left the television station with Li Wan. The team was preparing for a major program recently, and everyone had been working overtime frequently. This made Qin Qianrou seem less unusual, and naturally, no one questioned why she was always going home so late.

Li Wan huddled closer to Qin Qianrou, shivering. “It’s so cold today, thankfully, the team leader is humane and let us leave at dinnertime.”

“Then why aren’t you rushing home for dinner?”

“Sigh, I don’t want to go home tonight.”

Qin Qianrou looked at her with interest. Li Wan not wanting to go home most likely meant Zhuo Cheng was visiting again.

“Don’t ask, it’s just that annoying pest at my house again.”

Qin Qianrou chuckled knowingly and didn’t ask.

She got into her car, and Li Wan got in as well.

    “Just a ride.”

Qin Qianrou glanced at her helplessly, not bothering to object. “Where are you going?”

Li Wan thought for a moment, then suggested, “How about we have a nice dinner before going home?”

Having dinner outside and killing some time would mean Zhuo Cheng would probably be gone by the time she got home. Even if he wasn’t, she wouldn’t have to entertain him for long, which was perfect.

Qin Qianrou wasn’t interested and was about to refuse when Li Wan interrupted her.

“We’ve worked hard all day, don’t we deserve a nice meal? Besides, you don’t have anything to eat at home.”

Li Wan knew Shen Yiqiu hadn’t been cooking dinner every day lately, assuming it was because she was busy with her studies. Qin Qianrou hadn’t told her about the late-night snacks; after all, Li Wan wouldn’t be around to share them.

Qin Qianrou parted her lips, but didn’t explain.

“It’s settled then, we’re having a nice dinner in the city center. By the way, should we invite Shen Yiqiu? She’s been studying hard lately too.”

Qin Qianrou hesitated, unsure whether to agree or not.

“Qianrou, are you listening to me?” Li Wan waved her hand in front of Qin Qianrou’s face, annoyed by her distraction.

“It’s fine, I’ll just bring some takeout back for her.”

Qin Qianrou thought that Shen Yiqiu was already sacrificing her study time to prepare late-night snacks for her every day. Calling her out for dinner would only be a further disruption; it would be better to bring food back for her.

They arrived at the restaurant a bit late, it was already the second seating, but thankfully, the waiting list was shorter. Many of the customers around them, still in their work attire, had also just finished work.

Li Wan sighed, “All pitiful workers.”

Qin Qianrou casually remarked, “It’s rare to see the team leader leave on time today, I’m not quite used to it.”

Li Wan snorted softly. “She has a date, of course she’s in a hurry.”

Qin Qianrou looked up from her phone, a knowing smile on her face as she looked at her friend.

“Why are you looking at me like that?”

“Nothing, I just thought your tone was a bit… peculiar.”

Li Wan fidgeted, her hands moving from the table to her lap, unconsciously tracing circles.

    “What’s peculiar about it?”

If Qin Qianrou couldn’t sense something was amiss now, she would have wasted all those years of friendship with Li Wan.

Now, it wasn’t just her tone; her entire demeanor was strange.

Such unusual behavior definitely meant something was up.

“Xiao Wan, is there something you want to share with me?”

Li Wan, for the first time, felt cornered by her friend. It was usually she who teased Qin Qianrou like this. However, now, her heart was in turmoil, she had finally figured out her own feelings.

Especially with that annoying Zhuo Cheng’s reappearance, it had made her realize who she truly liked. However, it seemed like a hopeless love, and she didn’t dare to act on it.

Seeing her struggle, her troubled expression, Qin Qianrou also felt a little nervous. She wasn’t one to joke around, and her rare attempt at teasing had unexpectedly elicited such a reaction from Li Wan.

“If it’s something you don’t want to talk about, it’s fine. Xiao Wan, I’m not trying to force you.”

“It’s not that I don’t want to tell you, it has nothing to do with you, it’s my own problem, I just don’t know how to say it.”

Li Wan sighed softly, a stark contrast to her usual fiery and carefree personality, a hint of sadness in her voice.

    “I’ve fallen for someone I shouldn’t have. I know it’s hopeless, but I can’t help it.”

Qin Qianrou was lost in thought, her heart seemingly mirroring Li Wan’s struggles as she listened to her confession.

Having opened up, Li Wan poured out the feelings she had been suppressing for so long. After all, she had no one else to confide in besides Qin Qianrou.

“I never thought I would fall for someone like this, I thought it was impossible, we’re on completely different paths. But after spending time with her, I realized that feelings… you can’t control them. When you fall for someone, you fall for someone, there’s nothing you can do about it.”

Qin Qianrou looked at Li Wan, seeing the self-deprecating smile on her lips, the helplessness in her eyes.

“Xiao Wan, is the person you’re talking about…”

Qin Qianrou had already guessed, but it was still better for Li Wan to confirm it herself. If she was wrong, it might lead to further misunderstandings.

Li Wan looked at her helplessly, a hint of dejection in her voice. “Who else could it be?”

Qin Qianrou sighed softly. She hadn’t expected Li Wan to like the team leader. However, thinking back, it seemed inevitable.

    “Does she… know?”

    “No.”

Li Wan paused, then explained, “I don’t know if she knows. She’s a workaholic, practically lives in the office, I don’t think she knows.”

Recalling her recent overtime sessions with Lin Shuangzhi, Li Wan felt a surge of frustration, not knowing how to express it.

    “What about Zhuo Cheng…?”

Li Wan quickly interrupted, “It has nothing to do with Zhuo Cheng, even if he hadn’t reappeared, I think I would still have fallen for her. It’s just that because of Zhuo Cheng, I finally realized the difference between liking someone and not liking someone, it’s so obvious.”

She had made herself clear, there was no doubt in Qin Qianrou’s mind.

They were both nearing thirty, and although their romantic experiences were limited, they had witnessed countless relationships. They were no longer seventeen or eighteen-year-old teenagers experiencing first love; they knew their own feelings.

Their hesitation stemmed from their clear understanding of reality, their fear of taking that step forward. In the adult world, love wasn’t everything, yet it was a powerful yearning, a desperate thirst for an oasis in the desert.

Qin Qianrou remained silent; Li Wan didn’t need encouragement right now. She had always been decisive in matters of the heart, what she needed was someone to listen, her overflowing emotions needed an outlet.

“Tell me, am I crazy? Falling for a woman, my superior, a workaholic who practically lives in the office, completely oblivious to romance!”

Having revealed her secret, Li Wan felt a sense of relief, and she couldn’t help but complain. She truly couldn’t understand Lin Shuangzhi’s mindset, how could someone be so devoted to work?

Then, the next moment, she looked at Qin Qianrou, realizing she was pretty much the same.

“Qianrou, tell me honestly, for workaholics like you, is it in your genes to prioritize work over everything else?”

Qin Qianrou hadn’t expected such a sudden shift in topic, but she didn’t avoid the question. “Work does give us a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction, but not to the point of surpassing everything else.”

Li Wan, armed with this answer, tried to understand Lin Shuangzhi better, but she still couldn’t quite grasp it, so she returned to Qin Qianrou.

“So you often come home late because the joy of work surpasses the warmth of having someone waiting for you at home?”

Qin Qianrou’s heart skipped a beat, her hand holding the cup trembling slightly. Thankfully, it wasn’t full, so she didn’t spill anything.

“What does this have to do with me? Are you using me as a reference point for your analysis?”

“I just don’t understand the mindset of people like you. Isn’t having someone waiting for you at home appealing enough?”

Li Wan was still lost in her own thoughts, unable to understand. Qin Qianrou’s gaze deepened; she had an answer to this question, but she couldn’t say it.

    **

Yuan Qi seemed truly out of touch with city life, especially the bustling nightlife, which seemed to excite him greatly. Shen Yiqiu, watching her cousin eat non-stop, couldn’t help but worry.

“Cousin, if you like it so much, we can come back tomorrow.”

“Let me enjoy today’s portion first, tomorrow has its own quota.”

What? A quota for eating? Shen Yiqiu was both surprised and amused, but seeing his continued enthusiasm, he must have been truly hungry.

Yuan Qi pointed to Shen Yiqiu’s bowl. “You’re only eating this much?”

Shen Yiqiu had actually eaten quite a bit, a large bowl of ramen, a few pan-fried dumplings, two fried chicken wings, and a few fish balls her cousin had insisted she try.

She was full now, but since Yuan Qi hadn’t finished, she couldn’t suggest leaving.

She discreetly checked the time a few times, calculating when she needed to leave to prepare the late-night snack.

    Chapter 49 p2

Shen Yiqiu reluctantly let go, her eyes still fixed on Qin Qianrou.

She didn’t ask Qin Qianrou to stay, there was no reason to. But she just wanted to look at her, she had been deliberately avoiding her all evening, and now she couldn’t bear it any longer.

Qin Qianrou looked away, said “Good night,” and quickly turned to leave.

The sound of the door closing, then the sound of the next door opening, and Shen Yiqiu smiled in a daze.

Shao Ze was her brother, not her boyfriend, and Jiejie was still her Jiejie.

    This was good.

Shen Yiqiu drifted off to sleep, sleeping soundly throughout the night. She woke up naturally a little after 5 am, realizing she hadn’t even washed up before going to bed, unable to tolerate her own sloppiness.

She got up, showered, and tidied up. Seeing that it was still early, she returned to bed and took out her phone.

She entered Qin Qianrou’s name in the search bar and read through all the related news articles. Shao Ze’s appearance had made her aware of her own hidden feelings, and last night, she had realized she still knew very little about Jiejie.

She wanted to know more about Qin Qianrou, to understand her better, to be closer to her.

Qin Qianrou had barely slept, she had spent the entire night thinking about Shen Yiqiu’s behavior. Her emotional shifts had been too obvious, making her wonder.

Especially the sudden brightness in her eyes when she learned Shao Ze was her cousin’s son, it had both moved and startled Qin Qianrou.

At that moment, Qin Qianrou had instinctively felt that Shen Yiqiu was happy. But was knowing Shao Ze’s identity worth such joy?

And the way she had clung to her clothes, afraid of her leaving, had both touched and worried her. This child was too reliant on her, to the point of being inseparable. If this continued, would Shen Yiqiu always be by her side?

Qin Qianrou didn’t dislike this scenario, but she felt it wasn’t right, it wasn’t good for Shen Yiqiu’s growth. She needed to have her own life, they were just acquaintances, sharing a brief moment in time.

Thinking this, Qin Qianrou felt a pang of sadness, as if reluctant to let go of their current situation too soon. This conflicting mindset made her even more restless.

She tossed and turned, unable to sleep peacefully.

They returned to Meng City that afternoon. Shao Ze personally drove them to the airport. Shen Yiqiu’s attitude towards him had completely changed, and she even joked with him, which surprised both Shao Ze and Qin Qianrou.

Shao Ze shook his head in amazement. “The sun must have risen from the west today, Shen Yiqiu actually responded to my jokes. Tsk, tsk, spending a night at the villa really made a difference, you’re becoming more and more like family.”

Shen Yiqiu’s ears felt slightly warm, and she didn’t know how to respond. Admitting it was definitely out of the question, but she didn’t want to deny it either.

Qin Qianrou came to her rescue. “Focus on driving.”

Although Shao Ze was older than Qin Qianrou, he seemed to listen to her. She had told him to focus on driving, so he didn’t say anything more, and the car returned to its previous silence.

Shen Yiqiu had been in a good mood since morning, but Qin Qianrou seemed listless. After being asked, she simply said she hadn’t slept well last night and didn’t elaborate.

Shen Yiqiu felt distressed for her, but besides offering words of concern, she couldn’t do anything. She thought about adjusting her cooking repertoire when they got back, preparing meals that promoted sleep, so Jiejie could have a good night’s rest after a long day at work.

Thinking this, Shen Yiqiu’s anticipation grew, and she wished she could fly back to Meng City immediately.

The first week back in Meng City, they were both busy. Shen Yiqiu had to catch up on her missed classes, and Qin Qianrou had to deal with the accumulated work. Overtime seemed to have become the norm again.

“Jiejie, are you coming home for dinner tonight?”

Shen Yiqiu called just as Qin Qianrou finished a meeting and was walking back to her office with Li Wan.

“I have to work overtime tonight.”

“Okay, then I’ll stay at school and do my homework.”

After hanging up, Li Wan looked at her, puzzled.

Only after returning to their office did Li Wan ask, “You’ve been in meetings all afternoon, and you’re not tired? Planning to work overtime again?”

    “Is there a problem?”

“No problem with working overtime, but I think there’s something wrong with you.”

Qin Qianrou opened her meeting notes, preparing to revise a report.

    “What’s wrong with me?”

Li Wan stared at her for a long time, until Qin Qianrou finally looked up, and then she slowly said, “Qianrou, you’ve been working overtime ever since you came back from Hai City.”

Qin Qianrou didn’t react; this was perfectly normal for her.

    “Who are you avoiding?”

Qin Qianrou stiffened and immediately denied it. “I’m not avoiding anyone.”

Li Wan’s voice, laced with a smile, came again. “Then why are you afraid to go home, insisting on working overtime until late at night?”

Qin Qianrou’s overtime hours this week had broken records. Even Lin Shuangzhi had remarked that the vacation must have recharged Qin Qianrou, making her even more productive.

Li Wan looked at her with a knowing smile, not urging her, but clearly waiting for an answer. Qin Qianrou tried to ignore her gaze but felt a sense of annoyance at being seen through.

“I was on leave for so long, if I don’t catch up on my work, it’ll affect the team’s progress. I don’t want my personal matters to interfere with my work, is there something wrong with that?”

“Nothing wrong, it was just a guess. Qianrou, you don’t have to be so defensive.”

Li Wan’s words made Qin Qianrou realize she had been a bit too tense.

Was it because she was afraid of being seen through, or was it because this was the excuse she had been telling herself?

Li Wan didn’t push further. She stood up, adjusted her shirt, and said, “Hurry up and finish your work, when you can finally leave on time, I’ll come over for dinner.”

The sudden change of topic startled Qin Qianrou. “What?”

    “I miss Shen Yiqiu’s cooking, it’s been a while, I’m craving it.”

Qin Qianrou felt a pang of displeasure, but she couldn’t find a reason to refuse. There was no reason to prevent Li Wan from coming over, but why did it suddenly feel uncomfortable?

“She hasn’t been cooking for long, it’s rare for her cooking to be so memorable. I’ll let her know, I’ll ask her to make extra dishes for you when you come over.”

Li Wan didn’t seem to mind, her tone casual and familiar. “No need to trouble her, I’ll just message her directly.”

    With that, Li Wan left.

Qin Qianrou’s thoughts wandered. Do they message each other often?

    **

Late autumn had passed, and the nights were getting colder. Qin Qianrou, leaving the television station after working overtime, tightened her wool coat.

Her car was being serviced, and she had been working late these past few days, so she took a taxi home. But today, just as she left the building, she saw a figure in the distance, seemingly looking in her direction.

She looked over, and the person quickly walked away, leaving Qin Qianrou with only a fleeting glimpse of their back.

She didn’t think much of it; the taxi she had called arrived. When she got home, the living room light was on, and there was food on the dining table. Since returning from Hai City, she hadn’t had dinner at home in a long time.

After a while, Shen Yiqiu had stopped asking, but she still prepared dinner for her every day. If she didn’t return by dinnertime, it would be saved as a late-night snack. Every day, no matter how late, there was always food waiting for her when she got home.

Shen Yiqiu’s studies seemed to have intensified recently. If Qin Qianrou wasn’t coming home for dinner, she wouldn’t rush to the supermarket, spending more time at school instead.

Sometimes, when Qin Qianrou returned late, she would see the light on in Shen Yiqiu’s room; she must still be studying. Qin Qianrou would soften her movements, trying not to disturb her. Later, when she was ready for bed, she would see the light still on in Shen Yiqiu’s room.

Why has she suddenly become so studious?

Qin Qianrou was puzzled, but they rarely saw each other lately, only during those brief mornings, not enough time to ask.

    **

Shen Yiqiu was indeed studying diligently. Since returning from Hai City, she had gradually noticed a change in Qin Qianrou. Jiejie was deliberately distancing herself, creating space between them, which made her sad.

She wondered if she had been too obvious, if Jiejie had noticed her feelings. So, she had become cautious, suppressing her emotions. But Qin Qianrou, besides working late, didn’t seem to have changed otherwise. Every morning, she would still ask about Shen Yiqiu’s plans for the day, or how she was doing. Li Wan had visited twice, and the atmosphere had been normal.

Shen Yiqiu wondered if she was being too sensitive, if Jiejie was simply too busy lately. Thinking this, she felt a pang of heartache, imagining Qin Qianrou working long hours, eating takeout late at night, and she became even more determined to cook delicious and nourishing meals for her.

Even if it was just a late-night snack, she would always try to vary the dishes, hoping to provide Jiejie with a proper meal after a tiring day.

Besides this, she didn’t dare to show any affection. She thought that being able to maintain this distance, to continue living like this, was already enough.

When Jiejie wasn’t so busy anymore, perhaps they could go back to how things were before.

With He Chao gone, and Shao Qidong temporarily out of the picture, Shen Yiqiu felt she couldn’t miss this opportunity, cherishing the chance to focus on her studies. Compared to her past life, where she had simply drifted through university, she now wanted a better future, so she couldn’t waste her time.

Jiejie was so outstanding, she couldn’t be too far behind, otherwise, how could she stay by Jiejie’s side? Unconsciously, Shen Yiqiu had started viewing Qin Qianrou as a role model, a guiding light.

She admired her outstanding and exceptional Jiejie and wanted to become just as remarkable.

One day, her advisor informed her that someone had come to the university looking for her, claiming to be her relative. Shen Yiqiu then remembered her cousin, Yuan Qi.

They were both surprised when they met in the advisor’s office.

“My goodness, Xiao Qiu, you’ve grown up so much!”

Shen Yiqiu stood awkwardly by the door, then said, “Cousin, you have a beard now.”

Seeing that they did indeed know each other, and hearing Shen Yiqiu address him as her cousin, the advisor was reassured that they were indeed related and allowed them to meet privately, but they weren’t allowed to leave campus.

As Shen Yiqiu led her cousin across campus, it happened to be lunchtime, and many students were milling about. Seeing Shen Yiqiu with a man who, although not very old, was clearly not a student, they couldn’t help but stare.

Shen Yiqiu, however, had no time to pay attention to them; she was still processing her cousin’s sudden appearance.

“Xiao Qiu, I was on a sea expedition, away from land, completely cut off from the outside world. I only heard about the He Chao incident recently, and then I found out about what happened to your family.”

Her usually carefree and adventurous cousin was now filled with regret and remorse, blaming himself for not being there for her when she needed him most.

“I’m fine now, Cousin, don’t blame yourself. Accidents happen, no one could have predicted it. And I’m grateful that you came to see me as soon as you returned.”

Yuan Qi looked at Shen Yiqiu. She had grown taller, her features more mature, more beautiful. But she was still as kind and sweet as before, always so understanding.

“Don’t worry, I won’t be traveling anymore, you’ll always be able to find me.”

“You’re not going on your world tour anymore?”

“Not for now, I’ll settle down in Meng City. Come live with me, I’ll take care of you.”

Shen Yiqiu stared at the bearded man before her, as if seeing him for the first time.

Even her cousin had changed, suddenly wanting to settle down.

But she didn’t want to live with him.

“I’m an adult now, I can take care of myself. And I’m currently living with Jiejie, it’s… nice.” Her voice trailed off, a hint of shyness in her tone.

  • Qin Auntie, Save Me [Rebirth] 49p1

    Chapter 49 p1

When Shao Ze saw them arrive, he put down his magazine and walked over. It was only a short distance, but Shen Yiqiu clearly saw his expression shift from indifference to a bright smile, clearly delighted to see them.

Shen Yiqiu thought glumly, Perhaps he’s just happy to see Jiejie and is just being polite to me.

Shao Ze’s first words upon approaching were, “I told the chef about the dish you liked last night, he’s making it tonight as well.”

Shen Yiqiu’s heart sank a little further. As expected, they had dined together last night.

Lost in thought, she stared blankly at the carpet, completely ignoring Shao Ze’s attempts to catch her attention.

Shao Ze had no choice but to call out to her, “Shen Yiqiu, why are you ignoring me?”

A gentle complaint, veiled in casual tolerance, making it clear he wasn’t offended, just trying to make conversation.

    “Hello.”

Shen Yiqiu’s stiffness was even more pronounced than their previous meeting, and Shao Ze looked at her, puzzled. Qin Qianrou, who had her back to them, finally noticed something was amiss.

Shao Ze knew his presence would hinder their conversation, so he excused himself to check on the kitchen and slipped away. Qin Qianrou saw Shen Yiqiu still staring at the carpet, seemingly fascinated by it, and felt a little puzzled.

    “You don’t like it here?”

Shen Yiqiu looked up. “No, it’s so beautiful and luxurious, how could I not like it?”

All objective observations, not revealing her true feelings at all.

Qin Qianrou frowned slightly and asked again, “Are you unhappy to see Shao Ze?”

Shen Yiqiu’s hand, hanging by her side, suddenly tightened around the hem of her pants, her gaze darting around. She didn’t know how to answer this question.

“It’s alright, he just likes to joke around. If you don’t like his way of interacting, I’ll tell him to be more mindful.”

Qin Qianrou’s words, instead of comforting Shen Yiqiu, filled her with a faint pang of jealousy.

Be more mindful in the future… does that mean Shao Ze will be a constant presence in their lives?

Oh, it’s not like that. It’s Jiejie and Shao Ze, with her as an outsider. So she’s the extra one.

The bitterness in Shen Yiqiu’s heart intensified, and she couldn’t help but ask, “Is Shao Ze Jiejie’s family?”

Qin Qianrou nodded without hesitation. “Yes, he’s family. Although he almost wasn’t.”

She recalled the time he had been kicked out of his home, not even allowed to be called Wen Shao Ze, it had been truly humiliating. Everyone had thought her uncle was truly severing ties with him and had forbidden anyone from contacting Shao Ze.

But blood was thicker than water, and after some time, the conflict subsided, and with Wen Yirong mediating, Shao Ze was finally able to return home.

Shen Yiqiu understood; it was pretty much as she had guessed. Now it seemed Jiejie and Shao Ze’s relationship was confirmed, so he was considered family.

A sudden stinging sensation in her nose, her fingers numb from gripping her pants too tightly, she continued holding on instinctively. However, this didn’t alleviate the tightness in her chest, and she felt the tears she had been holding back threatening to spill over.

Wen Yirong’s voice came from behind. Just as Qin Qianrou was about to speak, Shen Yiqiu suddenly asked, “Where’s the restroom?”

Her voice was urgent, as if she couldn’t wait a second longer. Qin Qianrou, thinking she was unwell, pointed her in the right direction.

Wen Yirong, before even approaching, saw Shen Yiqiu hurrying away.

“What’s wrong? Rushing to the restroom before even starting dinner?”

Qin Qianrou looked away and turned to her mother. “She might be feeling a little unwell.”

“I was just joking, you don’t have to be so concerned.”

Qin Qianrou looked at her helplessly. She and her mother were truly different. Shao Ze, however, was more like Wen Yirong, which was probably why she favored him among her younger relatives.

Wen Yirong put her arm around her daughter’s shoulders. It had been a while since she had hugged her.

“Look at you, you’ve lost weight.”

    “My weight hasn’t changed.”

“Tsk, you’ve lost weight, I’ve been holding you since you were a child, I know.”

Qin Qianrou didn’t argue, relaxing her body, enjoying this rare moment of maternal affection.

Wen Yirong’s concern had always been there, but with the distance between them, it hadn’t felt as tangible.

Wen Yirong held her daughter tightly, reluctant to let go. After a while, she sighed softly.

“Xiao Rou, have you really not considered returning to Hai City?”

Since her daughter had been coming back so frequently lately, perhaps her resistance to Hai City wasn’t as strong as before? Hope flickered in Wen Yirong’s heart. The older she got, the more she wanted her children close by.

“Mom, I don’t want to yet.”

Wen Yirong was slightly disappointed but didn’t show it. Her daughter’s change of heart would take time. She wasn’t in a hurry, she could wait.

She changed the subject, pulling Qin Qianrou to sit down on the sofa. “When are you going back then?”

    “Tomorrow afternoon.”

    “So soon?”

Qin Qianrou instinctively glanced towards the restroom; Shen Yiqiu hadn’t come out yet.

She turned back and continued her conversation with her mother.

“I’ve finished the main things I came here for, and I have other matters to attend to in Meng City.”

Wen Yirong nodded understandingly. Her daughter was a workaholic, she had known this for a long time. But the thought of her leaving again tomorrow made her reluctant.

    “Then stay here tonight.”

Qin Qianrou considered it, then agreed.

Wen Yirong, surprised by her ready agreement, her face beaming with joy, immediately got up to instruct the housekeeper to prepare a guest room.

Qin Qianrou, however, was thinking that staying here meant having separate rooms, so she wouldn’t have to be in such close proximity to Shen Yiqiu. They would be home tomorrow night, and everything would return to normal, this distance was just right.

    **

Shen Yiqiu looked at herself in the mirror, berating herself for being so weak. Why was she crying? She hadn’t thought she would cry over such a small matter, but Shao Ze’s presence made her so uncomfortable, she felt a sense of grievance and fear, as if Jiejie would no longer be just hers.

She imagined Qin Qianrou frequently dining with Shao Ze in the future, perhaps going shopping, watching movies, or even going on weekend trips together. Then, she would be left alone at home, eating alone, even if she prepared a table full of dishes, only she would be there to enjoy them.

Just imagining this brought tears to Shen Yiqiu’s eyes again. She wiped her tears, repeatedly reminding herself, Shen Yiqiu, you can’t let your selfish desires ruin Jiejie’s happiness.

Such a wonderful person like Jiejie, how could she remain alone, and she certainly wouldn’t always be there for her.

Shen Yiqiu finally accepted the harsh reality: one day, she would lose Qin Qianrou.

She just didn’t want that day to come so soon. But Shao Ze seemed so perfect. Just standing together, they were a dazzling and harmonious pair.

Shen Yiqiu’s face turned even paler, her eyes losing their usual brightness. She was dissatisfied with herself, being a guest at someone’s home, and hiding in the restroom before even exchanging a few words, how rude.

Even if she would have less time with Jiejie in the future, she had to cherish every moment now. Jiejie bringing her to this family dinner meant she considered her someone close.

Shen Yiqiu stared at her reflection for a long time. “Shen Yiqiu, don’t expect too much.”

Having composed herself, she tidied up her appearance and walked out.

Qin Qianrou wasn’t waiting for her at the door, but as soon as she emerged, she felt a gaze upon her. She looked up and saw Qin Qianrou looking at her.

    “Feeling better?”

Shen Yiqiu nodded awkwardly and walked over.

“You were in there for a long time, are you sure you’re alright?”

    “I’m fine, probably just nervous.”

Qin Qianrou studied her. Apart from her pale complexion, there didn’t seem to be anything wrong.

But she was still a little concerned. “If you’re not feeling well, just tell me, don’t force yourself, okay?”

    “Okay.”

As they were talking, Wen Yirong came downstairs with the housekeeper.

    “Yiqiu, are you alright?”

Shen Yiqiu looked over and, seeing Wen Yirong’s smile, sweetly greeted, “Hello, Aunt Wen. Sorry for intruding today.”

“Why are you suddenly so polite? You weren’t this formal last time. Just a casual dinner, don’t be so constrained.”

“I haven’t properly thanked you for the clothes you gave me last time, thank you.”

Shen Yiqiu’s politeness and well-mannered behavior made Wen Yirong reluctant to tease her. After a brief exchange, she went to attend to the dinner preparations, shooing Shao Ze back to the living room.

“You young people should chat amongst yourselves. With me, an elder, around, you’ll probably feel constrained.”

Shao Ze shrugged helplessly. “Look at me, always being shooed around, as if I’m unwelcome everywhere.”

Qin Qianrou ignored him and led Shen Yiqiu to the sofa. Shao Ze followed and sat in his previous single-seater.

“Qianrou, you’re so cold and heartless, not even offering me a few words of comfort seeing me so pitiful.”

“Stop playing the victim, it’ll only garner sympathy for your plight.”

Shen Yiqiu still rarely spoke, but she was no longer as detached and withdrawn as before. Shao Ze glanced at her and saw a faint smile on her lips, as if she had been listening attentively to their conversation.

However, the smile seemed a little stiff.

Shao Ze paused, then said to Shen Yiqiu, “Is she always like this at home? So boring and heartless, right?”

Shen Yiqiu instinctively shook her head. “Jiejie is very nice.”

At home, Qin Qianrou wasn’t this cold and distant, and she was truly very good to her.

Shao Ze seemed to have suffered another blow and said unhappily, “Qianrou, how can you be so biased? Don’t I deserve your kindness and gentleness?”

The resentment and dissatisfaction in his tone were evident, and Shen Yiqiu bit her lip, wondering if she had said something wrong.

She glanced at Qin Qianrou, who didn’t seem offended.

“Shao Ze, how old are you? Why are you even competing for this?”

Just as Shao Ze was about to speak, Qin Qianrou added, “Don’t bully her, is this how you treat a guest?”

Shao Ze gave up completely, obediently accepting her words.

Although it was Qin Qianrou who had come to her rescue, shielding her from Shao Ze’s teasing, Shen Yiqiu could only pretend to be happy, her heart feeling cold. Jiejie’s words had been clear: Shao Ze was family, while she was a guest.

The distinction between closeness and distance was clear, but Shen Yiqiu wouldn’t show her disappointment.

Qin Qianrou’s uncle arrived just before dinner, exchanged a brief greeting with Shen Yiqiu, and then they all sat down. To Shen Yiqiu’s surprise, she was seated next to Qin Qianrou, with Wen Yirong on her other side.

Shao Ze, however, sat on the opposite side with Qin Qianrou’s uncle, an empty seat between them. This arrangement was a bit strange, but being seated next to Jiejie, Shen Yiqiu didn’t bother trying to figure out the reason.

Tonight, the person sitting beside Qin Qianrou was her.

The dinner wasn’t too formal. The elders simply inquired about their current situations, asking about their health, work, or studies. Their concern was appropriate and not overly intrusive.

Towards the end of the meal, after dessert was served, Qin Qianrou’s uncle suddenly spoke.

“You’re all grown up now, you can’t just focus on work, you should also start thinking about your personal lives.”

Shen Yiqiu mechanically spooned some tangyuan into her mouth, the faint sweetness of the fermented rice making her slightly lightheaded.

Qin Qianrou, as always, remained calm. “I don’t want to consider that yet.”

Shao Ze’s reaction, however, was much more dramatic. Seeing his agitated state, Shen Yiqiu thought he was trying to persuade Jiejie.

To her surprise, he exclaimed, “I don’t want to get married! I definitely won’t get married!”

The elders’ expressions darkened, especially Qin Qianrou’s uncle, his displeasure evident.

However, with Shen Yiqiu present, they couldn’t speak freely.

“Do you even know what you’re saying? You still haven’t figured things out?”

Shao Ze stood his ground, his tone firm. “It’s precisely because I’ve thought it through clearly that this is my true intention.”

His past indecisiveness and hesitation had hurt both himself and others, wasting so many years. If he continued down this path, his life would be completely ruined.

His uncle threw his napkin on the table, seemingly having lost his appetite.

“Fine, since you’ve made up your mind, I won’t force you.” Then, he looked at Qin Qianrou. “Xiao Rou, are you also going to indulge him like this?”

Shen Yiqiu’s heart tightened. She bit her spoon, not daring to move, but she immediately turned to look at Qin Qianrou.

“Uncle, marriage is a serious matter, it shouldn’t be taken lightly, and it shouldn’t be forced. Since Shao Ze has made up his mind, why should I say anything?”

The implication being that she didn’t object.

Wen Yirong tried to ease the tension. “It’s a rare family dinner, there’s no need to discuss such matters today. Besides, you’re scaring Yiqiu, she’s our guest, why bring this up now?”

Then, she turned to Shao Ze. “Shao Ze, if you have any thoughts, you can communicate them properly. There’s no need to be so confrontational with your father, you know he’s not in good health.”

Shao Ze was rendered speechless by Wen Yirong’s words, lowering his head in silence.

Shen Yiqiu, however, was stunned. Father…?

    So, Shao Ze is…

Qin Qianrou, noticing Shen Yiqiu’s reaction, realized she hadn’t formally introduced Shao Ze’s identity.

She leaned closer and whispered in Shen Yiqiu’s ear, “Shao Ze is my uncle’s son, my older brother.”

So that’s it, he’s her brother, they are indeed family.

Hee hee, the weight on her heart seemed to instantly vanish, replaced by a surge of joy.

Shen Yiqiu’s sudden bright smile startled Qin Qianrou, then she saw the frown that had been etched on her face all evening finally disappear, replaced by a genuine, pure, and radiant smile.

This smile was infectious, and Qin Qianrou couldn’t help but smile as well. The awkwardness that had lingered all evening seemed to instantly dissipate.

Shen Yiqiu happily finished her bowl of tangyuan. As she stood up to leave, she felt a little lightheaded, almost losing her balance.

A hand steadied her, the voice slightly stern, “You felt dizzy and still finished the entire bowl, you don’t know how to take care of yourself!”

Shen Yiqiu recognized Jiejie’s voice and leaned against her, feeling more stable.

Knowing Shao Ze’s identity had revitalized her. She had so much to say to Qin Qianrou, eager for the dinner to end so they could return to the hotel.

But why was Qin Qianrou leading her upstairs?

    “Jiejie, aren’t we going back?”

Shen Yiqiu’s face was flushed, her eyes filled with innocent confusion. She trusted and relied on Qin Qianrou completely, and even though she was starting to feel dizzy, she still unquestioningly followed her lead.

Wherever she led, she would follow.

    “We’re staying here tonight.”

Qin Qianrou followed the housekeeper, leading Shen Yiqiu to the guest room.

She let her sit on the bed for a while, and seeing that she had stabilized, prepared to leave.

Shen Yiqiu, however, anxiously grabbed the corner of her clothes. “Jiejie, where are you going?”

Qin Qianrou turned around, looked down at where she was being held, and said gently, “I’m in the next room.”

    “Oh.”

  • Qin Auntie, Save Me [Rebirth] 48

    Chapter 48

Shao Ze continued chattering, his eyes flickering between brightness and dimness, expressing regret and sadness over past events. He usually appeared confident and high-spirited; only in front of Qin Qianrou would he reveal this dejected and haggard side.

However, Qin Qianrou wasn’t really listening, yet she couldn’t help but be affected by his emotions and words. The sadness in his voice as he recounted past events and poured out his heart made it impossible for her to remain completely indifferent.

“Qianrou, what are you thinking about?”

Shao Ze’s soft sigh brought her wandering thoughts back to the present.

“Listening to you express your regrets.”

Shao Ze’s lips twitched slightly. “Were you really listening?”

“You don’t believe me? Then why did you ask me to come?”

Shao Ze wouldn’t, and couldn’t, confide in anyone else; only to Qin Qianrou could he truly express his feelings.

“Sigh, you’re the only one I can talk to about this. If even you’re unwilling to listen, I’ll be truly heartbroken.”

Qin Qianrou wasn’t fooled by his feigned sadness, but her mood wasn’t exactly pleasant either, and she certainly wasn’t in the mood to comfort him.

“If you asked me here just to have someone to talk to, I’m happy to listen. But if you’re hoping to get information about someone from me, I can’t help you. I’m a reporter, not a private investigator, and I haven’t heard anything all these years, so I’m not deliberately keeping anything from you.”

It was rare for Qin Qianrou to offer such a lengthy explanation. Shao Ze, hearing this, understood that his initial request had indeed been unreasonable.

“I understand, I didn’t have much hope to begin with, it was just a desperate attempt.”

Qin Qianrou sensed something unusual. This matter had been weighing on Shao Ze’s heart for years, and he hadn’t let go, she knew that. However, he had never been so eager, so open, so unreserved in expressing his longing.

    “Shao Ze, did something happen?”

Shao Ze chuckled bitterly. “Nothing major, just that my father is starting to arrange blind dates for me.”

He glanced at Qin Qianrou, then lowered his gaze to the cup in his hand. “With women.”

Qin Qianrou was surprised but also understanding. After all, at his age, his parents would naturally be concerned about his marital status. Even Li Wan often complained about this, although her parents were relatively open-minded and wouldn’t force her.

“Your uncle hasn’t given up on ‘fixing’ you?”

Shao Ze shook his head glumly. “He has. He thinks I’m beyond saving.”

“Then why arrange blind dates?” Qin Qianrou paused, seemingly having guessed her uncle’s intentions, her voice dropping slightly, “Does he want you to enter a sham marriage?”

Using a sham marriage to conceal the truth was a common practice, and it did seem like something her uncle would do.

“A contractual marriage wouldn’t be completely unacceptable, but that’s not what my father has in mind.” Shao Ze looked up, finally meeting Qin Qianrou’s eyes. “He wants me to deceive someone into marriage, to have children.”

“How could your uncle have such an idea?!”

That was outrageous! Qin Qianrou was furious. Even if it was her own family, she couldn’t accept such a ridiculous and harmful scheme, it would only make everyone unhappy.

“Don’t worry, I definitely won’t compromise or agree to it. So, after much consideration, I’ve decided to fight for myself, at least I won’t harm someone else.”

Shao Ze’s expression showed a rare determination and courage. She had rarely seen him like this.

“I strongly disagree with your uncle’s actions. Although I don’t know if your feelings are right or wrong, but if there’s anything I can do to help, just let me know.”

Shao Ze smiled; this was Qianrou’s way of offering her support.

“Thank you, Qianrou! With your help, I’ll definitely succeed.”

“Don’t put so much pressure on me, your happiness isn’t in my hands. I’ll make some inquiries when I return to Meng City, but I can’t guarantee how much I’ll be able to find out.”

“You’re already doing me a huge favor just by agreeing to help. And I’ll inevitably have another fight with my father. Having someone on my side is better than fighting this battle alone.”

Qin Qianrou took a sip of tea and said softly, “Then be prepared to be kicked out by your uncle again, you might not be able to be called Wen Shao Ze anymore.”

    **

Shen Yiqiu was dozing off when the doorbell, signaling the arrival of her room service, startled her awake. She had no appetite, but she was afraid Qin Qianrou would ask, and she definitely wouldn’t tell her the truth.

Oh well, might as well order something to keep up appearances.

The hotel chef’s skills were quite good. Shen Yiqiu mechanically ate the egg fried rice, her mind in a daze. She was in a state of extreme confusion and turmoil, afraid of her hidden feelings being discovered.

She would take a few bites, then pause to contemplate and struggle, her brow constantly furrowed. Shen Yiqiu unconsciously ate most of the fried rice, and by the time she realized it, she was already stuffed.

She felt uncomfortable, her stomach upset, her heart even more so.

Before this feeling could subside, Qin Qianrou returned, much earlier than Shen Yiqiu had expected. It seemed she had come straight back after dinner, with no other plans, and the meal hadn’t lasted long.

Shen Yiqiu marveled at her own rapidly improving deduction skills, albeit for such a ridiculous reason.

Qin Qianrou, upon entering, saw Shen Yiqiu leaning against the sofa, rubbing her stomach, and the food on the table. Her expression darkened.

    “Are you feeling unwell?”

Shen Yiqiu looked nervous and unnatural, instinctively avoiding Qin Qianrou’s gaze. “Ah! No, the fried rice was just too delicious, I accidentally ate too much, I’m so full.”

The other dishes were practically untouched, while the large plate of fried rice had been significantly depleted. Eating such greasy food late at night, and so much of it, Qin Qianrou didn’t know what to say.

She wanted to express her concern, to remind her to be mindful of her portions in the future, but the words caught in her throat. She was also entangled in a strange, chaotic mood tonight, unable to find direction or escape, disturbing her peace of mind.

“I’ll go take a shower, you can rest for a bit.”

Then, after tidying up briefly, Qin Qianrou quietly went into the bathroom.

Shen Yiqiu remained on the sofa, her gaze following Qin Qianrou only when she wasn’t looking. But Qin Qianrou was unusually quiet tonight, as if unwilling to interact.

She actually just went to take a shower, just told me to rest, nothing else. Shen Yiqiu’s heart sank. She had waited all evening, only to hear this.

She felt even worse, rubbing her stomach vigorously, but it didn’t help.

She really wanted to ask, Who did you have dinner with today, was it Shao Ze? Why did you finish so quickly, did Shao Ze drive you back? No other plans tonight, because you didn’t want to, or did you make other plans with him?

Shen Yiqiu felt she was turning into a “problem child,” so many questions, and more importantly, what did any of this have to do with her?

If she annoyed Qin Qianrou with her questions, a simple “It’s none of your business” would shut her down completely.

Thinking this, Shen Yiqiu was somewhat grateful for Qin Qianrou’s silence. Otherwise, she might not be able to resist asking, and things might spiral out of control…

This wasn’t the outcome she wanted. She patted her cheeks, reminding herself to stay calm. She had already decided she couldn’t be so reckless and impulsive anymore, she had to maintain a proper distance from Jiejie. She couldn’t scare Qin Qianrou or make her uncomfortable.

As for herself? Shen Yiqiu smiled bitterly, she didn’t know what was wrong with her, but she just wanted to bury these strange feelings deep within her heart.

Qin Qianrou stayed in the bathroom for an unusually long time. When she came out, Shen Yiqiu had already dozed off on the sofa.

Qin Qianrou’s movements slowed, and she quietly walked over to Shen Yiqiu. She had put down the towel she was using to dry her hair, intending to find a blanket for her, but she stopped as she turned around.

As if recalling something, Qin Qianrou turned back and picked up the towel again. She stared at Shen Yiqiu for a moment, and seeing no signs of her waking up, gently nudged her.

“Mm?” Shen Yiqiu finally woke up, annoyed by this rude awakening.

“If you’re tired, go take a shower.”

    “Okay.”

Shen Yiqiu was still groggy, but Qin Qianrou quickly moved away, returning to her own bed to continue drying her hair. And she had her back towards Shen Yiqiu, facing the curtained window.

Shen Yiqiu, her senses heightened, noticed every detail of Qin Qianrou’s actions. Jiejie was acting strangely tonight, as if avoiding her.

Whether it was her own guilt or Qin Qianrou’s deliberate actions, Shen Yiqiu felt a sudden distance between them.

When Shen Yiqiu emerged from the bathroom, she was surprised to see that Qin Qianrou was already asleep.

She went to bed so early tonight… Although this was her first thought, Shen Yiqiu immediately softened her movements, her first instinct to turn off the main light. Then, she quietly retreated to the bathroom to finish her nighttime routine.

Lying in bed, Qin Qianrou couldn’t sleep. She wasn’t particularly tired today, and it was too early for her usual sleep schedule.

    **

The night passed uneventfully. When they woke up the next day, the previous night’s awkwardness had dissipated, as if everything was back to normal.

Wen Yirong had set the dinner for that evening, and hearing that Shen Yiqiu was joining them, she chuckled happily over the phone.

Qin Qianrou had to remind her mother not to tease Shen Yiqiu.

Wen Yirong simply responded with an “Oh,” clearly wanting to know more.

“Why can’t I tease her? Such a lovely child, it’s been a while since I’ve interacted with someone so young.”

    “You’ll cause misunderstandings.”

“Qianrou, my teasing her won’t cause any misunderstandings. You being so protective of her is more likely to cause misunderstandings, don’t you think?”

Wen Yirong’s half-joking remark made Qin Qianrou reflect: Was she being too protective of Shen Yiqiu? Her mother wasn’t the only one who had said this; perhaps she hadn’t realized it before.

It seemed she should loosen her grip a bit. Shen Yiqiu’s condition was improving day by day, and Rong Fei had also confirmed her recovery was progressing well. Excessive protection wasn’t necessary.

Shen Yiqiu, of course, didn’t know about Qin Qianrou’s thoughts. She had her own struggles, trying to control her occasionally overflowing emotions, which threatened to spill over naturally.

This feeling was especially strong when she was with Qin Qianrou.

I can’t be like this! If Jiejie senses it, she’ll be uncomfortable. Shen Yiqiu mentally scolded herself, Step back, a little further.

Both harboring secret thoughts, unaware of each other’s intentions, they tacitly distanced themselves.

Wen Yirong had arranged the dinner at a small villa on the outskirts of Hai City, a quiet and secluded place not far from the city center. However, since everyone was usually busy, the villa was mostly unoccupied.

A private chef had been hired to prepare the meal. When Qin Qianrou and Shen Yiqiu arrived, Wen Yirong was busy making arrangements. Shao Ze was already waiting in the living room; their uncle hadn’t arrived yet.

Shen Yiqiu hadn’t expected the dinner to be held here. She had assumed it would be at a restaurant, a private room at most. It seemed she had underestimated the Qin family, and she suddenly felt a little nervous.

It wasn’t because of the luxurious setting, but because it felt like a private space, and her presence as an outsider seemed somewhat intrusive. However, seeing Shao Ze’s familiarity with the place, and how casually he was reading a magazine in the living room, she knew this wasn’t his first time here.

He had probably been here many times.
