    Chapter 15: …Uncontrollable

The sudden cough broke the spell.

Especially since Ming Fei, flustered by her daughter’s words, was blushing crimson, her cheeks as red as the double-petaled sunflowers in the nearby pots. Zhu Yiqiao, having heard everything, watched her intently, her gaze deep and unreadable. An unspoken tension hung in the air between them. Oblivious to this, Ming Zaozao looked up at Ming Fei with concern.

    “Mama.”

Ming Zaozao asked, “Are you sick? Did you catch a cold?”

Ming Fei quickly shook her head. “No, I’m not sick. My throat just tickled a bit.”

Both mother and daughter were wearing light blue pajamas. Ming Zaozao’s pajamas had a strawberry bear embroidered on them, and she wore matching bear paw socks. She grabbed Ming Fei’s hand and pressed her chubby cheek against her palm. Satisfied that Ming Fei wasn’t running a fever, she released her hand.

“See?” she said seriously. “Mama’s not too hot!”

This was a new method of checking for illness that Ming Zaozao had learned from a cartoon, even though the main character was a little fox in the forest. She’d imitated it with great enthusiasm.

Ming Fei, charmed by her daughter, felt the heat in her cheeks subside slightly.

“Thank you for the checkup, Dr. Zaozao.”

Dr. Zaozao then raised another question. “Mama, what’s wrong with your face?”

Ming Fei, still blushing, couldn’t think of a suitable answer.

Ming Zaozao touched her own cheek, then looked at Zhu Yiqiao’s normal-colored face on the screen, and, with an air of profound wisdom, declared, “Baby knows!”

“Mama is like the little fox’s friend, the little bunny,” Ming Zaozao whispered. “The little bunny is very cute, and when the little fox says it likes the bunny, the bunny blushes. Mama is like that too.”

Even though her daughter had whispered, Ming Fei knew 008 would have picked up every word and transmitted it to Zhu Yiqiao, who had likely heard Ming Zaozao’s conclusion in its entirety.

This made Ming Fei blush even harder.

She had always been shy and reserved. At the orphanage, she never tried to stand out in front of potential adoptive parents. She always stood at the back, quietly waiting. Even though she longed for a warm home, she would always defer to her younger “sisters” who needed it more.

Because of her gentle and timid nature, everyone who knew her assumed she would differentiate as an omega or a beta.

It wasn’t until her fifth year in this world, after graduating and choosing to stay at the university, that she gradually became more confident and outgoing while learning to teach. But she still blushed easily when embarrassed, like now. She couldn’t control it, only wait for the heat to subside.

However, faced with Ming Zaozao’s innocent observation and Zhu Yiqiao’s scrutinizing gaze, Ming Fei instinctively denied it.

“…No,” she coughed, “It’s just… warm in here, and I’m wearing too many layers.”

She placed Ming Zaozao on the wicker chair and stood up, preparing to leave the balcony. “Zaozao, you two chat. I’m going to start dinner.”

    Ming Zaozao nodded. “Okay!”

    “Mm.”

Out of politeness, Ming Fei said to the person on the screen, “Goodbye, Chief Justice Zhu.”

She didn’t wait for a response, hurrying towards the kitchen as if fleeing from a wild beast, almost knocking over a box on the table as she passed.

Ming Zaozao, oblivious to her mother’s flustered state, continued chatting with Zhu Yiqiao, ending the call ten minutes later.

The rain had completely stopped. After dinner, the night sky was dark and starless.

Ming Fei took Ming Zaozao for a walk in the nearby park. Passing the statue of a local historical figure, Ming Zaozao suddenly stopped, walked over, and placed the pink wildflowers she’d picked at the base of the statue.

After completing this small act of tribute, she ran back to Ming Fei, her eyes crinkling into a smile.

“Zaozao is such a good girl.” Ming Fei picked her up with one arm. “Do you want to go see the stone bridge?”

    “Yes!”

After walking a few steps, Ming Zaozao asked softly, “Mama, what does Pretty Auntie do?”

Her understanding of Zhu Yiqiao’s profession came mostly from Lan Lubai and Min Man. Due to the Court’s complex nature, their explanations had been vague. Ming Fei had rarely discussed Zhu Yiqiao’s position and accomplishments with her daughter, so Ming Zaozao only had a hazy understanding.

This wasn’t a difficult question to answer, especially with 008, the intelligent robot, accompanying them.

Its white display screen showed emojis conveying admiration and respect, and it began reciting Zhu Yiqiao’s credentials.

“Baby, Chief Justice Zhu is the current Chief Justice of the Court of the Yi Meng Independent State.”

008’s robotic voice was cheerful. “According to official records, Chief Justice Zhu joined the military eight years ago and was exceptionally selected for the Zhong Meng Elite Squad after only one year. During her year with the Elite Squad, Chief Justice Zhu completed several high-risk missions in the Bei Xia Bay sub-battlefield and, on July 12, 160 NE, successfully eliminated the Lieutenant General leading the Bay campaign.”

Since Ming Zaozao was only two years and two months old, 008 censored some details of Zhu Yiqiao’s past. “On September 25, 160 NE, Chief Justice Zhu was transferred to the Ares Special Forces, directly under the Yi Meng Independent State Military Department. This unit comprises the military’s most elite personnel and is the most highly trained force since the founding of the Independent State.”

“On December 11, 160 NE, Chief Justice Zhu was deployed to the main battlefield, earning numerous distinguished service medals, gaining international recognition, and within just three years, achieving the rank of Colonel, receiving the highest military honors and ten of the Yi Meng Independent State’s most prestigious medals.”

Hearing this, Ming Zaozao clapped enthusiastically.

    “Auntie is so amazing!”

If Ming Fei hadn’t been holding Ming Zaozao, she would have joined in the applause upon hearing the date 160 NE. She understood better than Ming Zaozao how difficult it was to achieve such feats.

That was why she had always deeply respected and admired the Chief Justice.

“Is there more?” Ming Zaozao wanted to know more. “Huahua, Baby wants to hear more!”

    “Okay, Baby ^^”

008 continued, “On December 5, 163 NE, the decade-long Soga Campaign ended in a decisive victory. This was the most significant war for the Yi Meng Independent State in the past thirty years. The commanding officer who led this campaign to victory was none other than Chief Justice Zhu, then a Colonel.”

“Many soldiers who participated in this campaign praised Chief Justice Zhu in their reports. They understood the brutality and danger of war better than the citizens of the Yi Meng Independent State, and they also knew better than anyone the exceptional qualities of Chief Justice Zhu.”

“But unfortunately, this brilliant military star officially retired on December 30, 163 NE.”

“On January 6, 164 NE, the former Colonel Zhu was appointed by the current monarch to the Court, directly assuming the position of Deputy Executive Officer, second only to the Chief Justice.”

“In her second year, during the annual performance review, Chief Justice Zhu exposed the criminal activities of the then-Chief Justice Lian, presenting irrefutable evidence of her crimes to the public.”

“On September 15, 166 NE, under the banner of the Yi Meng Independent State, the monarch officially appointed Zhu Yiqiao as the new Chief Justice. Since then, Chief Justice Zhu has held significant power, leading the privileged institution of the Court, becoming the youngest Chief Justice in the history of the Yi Meng Independent State.”

008 concluded, “Even as a robot, I would like to present a bouquet of flowers to this Chief Justice. To praise her, to celebrate her, and to remember her even centuries from now is something every citizen of the Independent State would do.”

Ming Zaozao clapped until her hands were red.

A gentle breeze rustled through the trees. Ming Fei adjusted her daughter’s jacket. “Are you cold, Zaozao?”

    “Not cold!”

Ming Fei, as if performing a magic trick, pulled a hat out of her large pocket and put it on Ming Zaozao.

Ming Zaozao beamed, her dimples showing. “Thank you, Mama!”

008 started playing a cheerful melody. Ming Fei glanced at its display and saw the song title was “Great Mother.” She then instructed 008 to stop the music.

Under the dim moonlight, the stone bridge over the lake resembled a pale crescent moon. As Ming Fei slowed her pace, her gaze sweeping across the distant lake markers, a sense of unease crept into her heart.

After the gene theft list was released, how would Zhu Yiqiao… treat them?

Would Zhu Yiqiao want to… take Zaozao away?

Out of guilt and remorse for unknowingly using her genetic sample, Ming Fei could accept any of Zhu Yiqiao’s demands. But she wouldn’t yield on this matter. If it came to that, what would she do?

    “September 28, 167 New Era, 14:21, apparent temperature 18°C, humidity 60%, visibility 20km—”

The broadcast ended. Arriving at the university, Ming Fei turned off the car’s systems, grabbed her briefcase, and stepped out.

There hadn’t been any rain in Xi He City recently. The roads were spotless, thanks to the cleaning robots. Ming Fei, dressed in a cream-colored trench coat, stopped by a plum tree.

Three students were sitting on a bench beside the tree, looking at their phones, their voices filled with excitement.

    “Chief Justice Zhu is back!!”

“Does that mean the gene theft list is about to be released?” the girl with crimson hair exclaimed. “The Court is so efficient! Chief Justice Zhu was in Taiya Kingdom for only a week, and five Taiya Kingdom officials have been arrested! They even apprehended a military captain with the help of the local police.”

“So many people are involved. I never imagined the SE Group had such deep roots.”

As the students continued their animated discussion, Ming Fei’s thoughts came to a standstill. She was happy about the Court’s progress but also nervous about Zhu Yiqiao’s return.

Nervous that Zhu Yiqiao might return to Huifu Gardens.

Even more nervous about Zhu Yiqiao’s next move.

Zhu Yiqiao had said she would release the gene theft list upon her return, so—

The vibration of her phone interrupted her worries. She turned towards the library, took out her phone, and her expression changed slightly as she saw the caller ID.

    [Chief Justice Zhu]

Ming Fei pressed her lips together, her eyelashes fluttering like butterfly wings.

During the past week, she had only sent text messages to Zhu Yiqiao, never overstepping the boundaries and only discussing matters related to Ming Zaozao. Whenever Ming Zaozao video called Zhu Yiqiao, Ming Fei would excuse herself, making sure she wasn’t visible on screen.

But now, she had no way out.

Ming Fei took a deep breath, composing herself before answering the call.

The sun was shining brightly, making the lake beside the library sparkle. The shimmering water reflected in Ming Fei’s eyes. She clenched her hand slightly, her voice soft as she spoke.

    “Chief Justice Zhu.”

She asked preemptively, “Is there something I can help you with?”

Chapter 14: “—Are You Seeing Anyone at the Moment?”

Twilight descended, the wind died down, and the rain stopped.

Ming Fei sat on the wicker chair in the center of the balcony, surrounded by potted plants of all shapes and sizes, their fragrance filling the air.

She took off her glasses, poured the last of the tea into her cup, and traced the smooth rim with her fingertips.

After finishing her tea, Ming Fei was about to start preparing dinner when Ming Zaozao came running, asking to be held.

Ming Fei smiled, easily scooping up her small daughter, and softly asked what was wrong.

    “Mama.”

    “Hmm?”

Ming Zaozao had played with Lan Lubai and Min Man until five o’clock that afternoon. By the time Ming Fei returned, Ming Zaozao was exhausted and had fallen asleep. It was now 6:30 pm, and Ming Zaozao had just woken up, one of her little braids slightly undone.

She clutched a puppy plushie, her round, dark eyes bright and alert.

“When is Pretty Auntie coming back today?”

Ming Fei hadn’t yet told her sweet little girl that the Pretty Auntie she adored would be away for a while. She gently pinched her daughter’s soft cheek, her voice even gentler than when she was alone with Zhu Yiqiao.

    “She’s not coming back today.”

Ming Zaozao immediately looked up and asked, “What happened to Auntie?”

“She has important work to do and will come back when she’s finished.” Ming Fei gave a conservative estimate. “It will probably take about a week.”

Hearing this, Ming Zaozao’s face fell. Her long, curly eyelashes fluttered, and her expression clearly conveyed her disappointment.

Seeing this, Ming Fei asked, “Do you like that auntie a lot, Zaozao?”

    Ming Zaozao nodded. “Mm-hmm!”

She began listing the reasons. “Pretty Auntie brought Baby to see Mama, gave Baby lots of presents, helped Baby wash hands, promised to take Baby to the aquarium, and… bought Baby that fun game!”

Ming Zaozao concluded, “Baby likes Auntie!”

A child’s affection was simple and pure. Ming Fei could see that Ming Zaozao genuinely liked Zhu Yiqiao, even more so than Lan Lubai and Min Man, despite having known all three for the same amount of time.

She couldn’t help but think… perhaps this was the magic of blood ties.

    “Mama!”

    “Hmm?”

Ming Zaozao asked innocently, “Does Mama like Auntie?”

This question pulled Ming Fei back into the turbulent vortex that was Zhu Yiqiao. The scene from their parting that afternoon was still vivid in her mind.

    “—Ming Fei.”

“—Are you seeing anyone at the moment?”

    She had been completely stunned.

After recovering, she’d answered without hesitation, “No.”

The atmosphere had become tense again. Zhu Yiqiao hadn’t offered any explanation, simply glancing at the time before getting up to leave.

As she passed Ming Fei, Zhu Yiqiao had suddenly stopped.

    “—Ming Fei.”

Just as Ming Fei was about to stand, Zhu Yiqiao placed something on the table beside her.

Due to the height difference between Zhu Yiqiao and the table, she leaned down slightly, and Ming Fei caught a whiff of that cool, subtle fragrance, elusive and indistinct. As she instinctively tried to identify the scent, Zhu Yiqiao straightened up.

    “Returning this to its owner.”

Ming Fei looked down and saw the butterfly friendship bracelet she’d lost. She’d remembered losing it but hadn’t been sure if she’d left it at the Court, and she’d felt awkward about asking, so she hadn’t mentioned it.

She hadn’t expected… Zhu Yiqiao to bring it back.

Ming Zaozao persisted, “Mama, do you like Auntie?”

Adult affection was far more complex than a child’s. Unable to give an immediate answer, Ming Fei decided on a white lie.

“Of course Mama likes her,” she said. “Everyone in the Yi Meng Independent State likes her.”

Ming Zaozao clapped her hands. “Baby too! Mama, can Baby video call Auntie?”

Ming Fei didn’t hesitate. “Yes, she’ll be happy to hear from you.”

Encouraged, Ming Zaozao immediately called for 008.

“Huahua, Baby misses Auntie. Can you video call Auntie for Baby?”

Before Ming Fei could intervene, 008, having received its instructions, initiated the video call.

    “Okay, Baby ^^”

    “Please wait, connecting now.”

Ming Zaozao beamed. “Thank you, Huahua~”

It was dinnertime. Ming Fei assumed Zhu Yiqiao, newly arrived in a foreign country and busy with official business, wouldn’t answer. But to her surprise, the call connected within five seconds.

Zhu Yiqiao’s face appeared on the white display screen.

She seemed to be in the garden of some formal event, surrounded by flowers that couldn’t outshine her radiant beauty.

Ming Zaozao greeted her politely. “Pretty Auntie, good evening!”

    “Mm.”

Zhu Yiqiao, on the other end of the call, asked, “Have you had dinner, Zaozao?”

Ming Zaozao replied, “Not yet. Auntie, when are you coming back?”

“Baby likes Auntie, Baby will miss Auntie.”

She giggled, her eyes crinkling like a mischievous kitten, and then said clearly, word by word, “My Mama too! She told Baby she likes Auntie too.”

    “Likes Auntie very, very much~”

Ming Fei, who had intended to remain in the background, suddenly burst into a fit of coughing.

    “Cough!”

Under Zhu Yiqiao’s scrutinizing gaze, Ming Fei felt incredibly awkward, her face burning, turning as red as a ripe peach.

Chapter 13: The Softening of the Chief Justice

The military-grade lie detector was ivory white, its sensor connected to the main display screen. Perhaps because it was a military model, the wristband resembled a handcuff.

Ming Fei’s heart pounded like a drum, and she clenched her hands under the table.

This moment felt incredibly wrong. She couldn’t understand why Zhu Yiqiao repeatedly addressed her with the commanding tone of someone interrogating a criminal.

    What had she done wrong?

From the moment the Court officials arrived at her door to the interrogation and the sudden request to move in after her release, she had cooperated fully, without resistance or concealment, except for the truth about her transmigration.

She had indeed unknowingly used Zhu Yiqiao’s genetic sample. At the time, she hadn’t known it was misplaced.

In this matter, Zhu Yiqiao was undoubtedly the victim. Ming Fei felt guilty, ashamed, and remorseful, readily complying with all of Zhu Yiqiao’s requests. But she… was not a deliberate perpetrator. Why did Zhu Yiqiao insist on judging her so harshly and unyieldingly?

Feeling like she was standing on a burning pyre, Ming Fei suddenly stood up, took a deep breath, and met the gaze of the woman seated at the head of the table.

    “…Chief Justice Zhu.”

“Please allow me to respectfully refuse your request.”

Ming Fei’s words tumbled out quickly. “You must know that every citizen of the Yi Meng Independent State deeply admires and appreciates your contributions. I am no exception. But I don’t understand your intentions, and I refuse to be interrogated like a criminal. Therefore, I refuse to wear that lie detector… or rather, that handcuff.”

Outside the large window, the wind and rain raged, dark clouds pressing down on the towering buildings, painting the world in shades of grey.

Zhu Yiqiao, always in command, didn’t seem surprised by this answer. She leaned back, an air of nonchalance about her that was different from her usual demeanor. The top button of her white shirt was undone, revealing a hint of her collarbone, and her pale wrist bore only a simple red string.

    “And?” she asked.

Ming Fei was caught off guard. “…And what?”

    “Your reasoning.”

Ming Fei quickly recovered. “I cooperated with your investigation before because I did have contact with Jing’an Gold Shop. As a citizen of the Yi Meng Independent State, it’s my duty to cooperate with the Court. But I’ve been released. If you have no evidence against me, I have the right to refuse.”

As she spoke, her usual gentle demeanor vanished, replaced by a sharp edge.

Zhu Yiqiao observed Ming Fei’s sudden shift in demeanor, her thoughts drifting to the cabinet filled with handicrafts in the playroom at Huifu Gardens and Ming Zaozao’s sweet smile when she spoke of her mother.

“Baby loves Mama the most, loves Mama best!”

“Mama is the best to Baby, Baby is Mama’s treasure!”

“Precious? Mama is Baby’s most precious~”

That sense of happiness and confidence, born from being loved, couldn’t be faked. Moreover, this morning, before coming to Déjàdé, Lan Lubai and Min Man had relayed the private investigator’s findings in detail.

“Su Li confirmed that there is indeed a small village called Taoqiu Village.”

Lan Lubai’s tone had been laced with sympathy. “That village barely had any residents before, very remote and rundown. Now it’s practically deserted.”

“Su Li spoke with some of the villagers nearby. Several confirmed that there was indeed an orphan who lived there once, but they didn’t know much else. In short, Su Li’s findings align with Ming Fei’s statement. There are no discrepancies.”

“Yiqiao, I think this is most likely just a coincidence. So far, Ming Fei’s record is clean.” Lan Lubai had even patted her shoulder. “She’s been through a lot, raising a child on her own all these years. Don’t be too hard on her.”

Min Man had added, “Yes, and you two share a child now.”

Because of this, Zhu Yiqiao had dismissed many of her suspicions, although she knew Ming Fei was still hiding something. But everyone had their secrets, and as long as they didn’t threaten the safety of the Independent State’s citizens, there was no need to pry.

As for the lie detector… it was just a final test.

If Ming Fei had agreed to wear it, Zhu Yiqiao would have only asked one question, a question about Ming Yi, the answer to which was obvious.

However, Ming Fei’s reaction had been unexpected. She hadn’t anticipated that the usually gentle and compliant rabbit, when pushed, would actually bare its teeth.

A faint smile flickered across Zhu Yiqiao’s eyes, so fleeting that Ming Fei, still thinking of how to counter her arguments, missed it entirely.

    “…Chief Justice Zhu.”

Ming Fei even added, “If you can’t provide a valid reason, may I leave now?”

The weather forecast wasn’t entirely accurate. At least, this downpour was far heavier than a moderate rain. The rain washed the windows clean, and Ming Fei, facing the large window, suddenly felt a familiar sensation in her gland.

The same stinging pain as before.

She pressed her lips together, her fingernails digging into her palms, her vision blurring slightly.

    “—Ming Fei.”

Zhu Yiqiao’s voice brought Ming Fei back to the present. She blinked, realizing the stinging was subsiding, the tension in her chest easing slightly.

“Chief Justice Zhu,” she asked, feigning composure, “Is there something else?”

    “You were wrong.”

Ming Fei was confused. “About what?”

Zhu Yiqiao activated the main display screen, projecting its contents onto the large screen behind her. Ming Fei’s eyes widened, color returning to her pale cheeks. She couldn’t even look at Zhu Yiqiao, averting her gaze as she asked, “Chief Justice Zhu, what is the meaning of this?”

The device connected to the display wasn’t a lie detector at all, but the holographic gaming console Ming Zaozao had mentioned this morning. This console, the latest model developed by the research institute, offered a fully immersive holographic experience and included all the latest children’s and adult games. It was currently unavailable to the public, despite high demand.

“Zaozao heard 008 mention this console this morning,” Zhu Yiqiao explained slowly. “She didn’t say she wanted it, but when she was talking to you, her eyes never left 008’s screen.”

    Ming Fei’s ears turned red.

    …Alright.

She admitted she’d overreacted a few minutes ago.

She also admitted she’d judged Zhu Yiqiao unfairly.

But… Zhu Yiqiao had started it with her lie detector trick.

Thinking this, she still apologized. “I was impulsive earlier, I’m sorry—”

Zhu Yiqiao interrupted her. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have interrupted you. And I was wrong to tell you it was a lie detector. I should be the one apologizing.”

    “—I’m sorry, Ming Fei.”

Perhaps because of this apology, Ming Fei felt the weather outside didn’t seem so gloomy anymore.

She was easily appeased and rarely held grudges. Hearing Zhu Yiqiao’s apology, Ming Fei readily forgave her, even mentally awarding her a couple of extra points.

“It’s alright,” she said. “Thank you for the gift for Zaozao.”

Zhu Yiqiao didn’t correct her formal address; it wasn’t the right time.

As silence settled between them again, the doorbell chimed. Ming Fei instinctively wanted to excuse herself, but Zhu Yiqiao told her to stay.

Soon, a woman in a navy blue suit entered, carrying two files. She approached Zhu Yiqiao respectfully, placed the files on the table, and then left the room.

Throughout this, Ming Fei kept her gaze averted, respecting Zhu Yiqiao’s privacy.

By the time Zhu Yiqiao finished reviewing the files, Ming Fei was engrossed in her e-reader. Her digital bookshelf contained a wide variety of books and materials, mostly professional parenting books, followed by technical manuals on robotic component development, and various guides on handicrafts.

A subtle scent of cedarwood filled the room, reminiscent of a spring thaw. Immersed in her reading, Ming Fei had completely forgotten her initial anxiety, fear, and worry.

She looked serene while reading, like a winter plum blossom blooming alone on a branch. Zhu Yiqiao watched her silently for a few seconds, only interrupting her when she received a message from a subordinate.

    “—Ming Fei.”

Startled, Ming Fei looked up, still slightly dazed. “Huh?”

Meeting Zhu Yiqiao’s gaze, she quickly collected herself. “Yes, Chief Justice Zhu, what is it?”

“I’ll be away for a while.”

Hearing this, Ming Fei, her suspicions confirmed, almost couldn’t contain her smile. She tried to maintain her composure, replying calmly, “Alright.”

“I’ve arranged for some people to stay at Huifu Gardens. They’ll ensure your and Zaozao’s safety and won’t disturb you.”

Zhu Yiqiao’s tone was measured. “There will be some developments during this time. By the time I return, the Court should be ready to release the list of those involved in the gene theft to the public.”

This aligned with what Li Xing had said. Ming Fei was secretly pleased about Zhu Yiqiao’s upcoming absence from Huifu Gardens, but the mention of security detail made her slightly uneasy.

The gene theft case was complex, involving multiple factions. If her guess was correct, Zhu Yiqiao was likely going to the Taiya Kingdom. Being in a foreign country, dealing with various powerful entities, Ming Fei, as a citizen of the Yi Meng Independent State, couldn’t help but worry about Zhu Yiqiao’s safety.

But then she realized her concern was probably unnecessary.

Even disregarding the Court’s domestic and international influence, Zhu Yiqiao’s military record and combat skills alone were enough to ensure her safe passage through any foreign nation.

Ming Fei offered a sincere, “I wish you all the best.”

    “Thank you.”

Perhaps because this was the first time their interaction hadn’t been charged with tension, Ming Fei sensed a subtle softening in Zhu Yiqiao’s demeanor, although barely perceptible.

She asked, “Chief Justice, are you leaving tomorrow?”

A storm was brewing, but Zhu Yiqiao seemed unaffected. She closed the file, her blue eyes as deep and calm as the ocean.

    “In twenty minutes.”

    Ming Fei was surprised.

    Such a rush?

Then why had she bothered summoning her here? Just to give Ming Zaozao a holographic gaming console?

With their impending separation, Ming Fei’s voice and expression softened, returning to her usual gentle demeanor.

“Thank you for the gift. Please rest assured, I’ll take good care of Zaozao while you’re away.”

    “Mm.”

“If you’d like, I can update you on Zaozao’s situation every day.”

    “Mm.”

Just as Ming Fei was about to say something else about Ming Zaozao, Zhu Yiqiao’s cool, clear voice cut through the air, catching her completely off guard.

    “—Ming Fei.”

“—Are you seeing anyone at the moment?”

Chapter 12: “—Put It On and Answer All My Questions.”

The moment she saw the message, Ming Fei felt as if the dark clouds outside had gathered directly above her head, drenching her to the bone, leaving her feeling gloomy and apprehensive.

As if on cue, the downpour outside intensified, lightning flashing occasionally through the clouds.

Ming Fei bit her lip, trying to negotiate with the unyielding woman.

    [Do I go alone?]

[What about Zaozao? Should I bring her with me? I haven’t taken her out to play today.]

    [Little bunny waving.jpg]

The chime of the living room security lock sounded simultaneously with the notification of an incoming message.

[Lubai and Min Man are going to visit Zaozao.]

    [They’re very fond of her.]

Ming Fei had no choice but to agree. She simply replied, “Okay,” put on her coat, and went to open the door.

Her visitors were indeed Lan Lubai and Min Man. This time, they were clearly making a friendly visit, dressed in casual clothes, smiles on their faces, and their hands overflowing with gifts for Ming Zaozao.

Seeing Ming Fei at the door, Lan Lubai greeted her with a smile.

    “Professor Ming, happy weekend!”

Ming Fei had seen the two executive officers’ profiles online and knew they were a few years older than her. She also knew they were both decorated military veterans who had made significant contributions to the Yi Meng Independent State.

“Happy weekend,” she replied with a polite smile. “Executive Officer Lan, Executive Officer Min.”

Lan Lubai, clearly the more extroverted of the two, said, “No need to be so formal. We’ll be seeing each other more often from now on.”

Before Ming Fei could process the underlying meaning of that statement, Lan Lubai continued, “Min Man and I are both older than you. If you don’t mind, you can just call us ‘Sister’ like Zaozao does.”

“While we were just following protocol before, we understand we may have caused some offense.” Min Man handed Ming Fei a sky-blue gift box. “This is a small token of apology.”

“Yes, yes, me too!” Lan Lubai thrust an emerald green gift box into Ming Fei’s arms. “Sorry about the other day. This is my apology gift.”

    Ming Fei was taken aback.

Her impression of the two had been stern and serious, like the black pistols they carried, the one pointed at her head, the other used to handcuff her. While they weren’t as… intimidating and sharp as Zhu Yiqiao, they certainly hadn’t seemed approachable.

Yet here they were, personally apologizing and even bringing thoughtful gifts.

Ming Fei was momentarily speechless. Recovering, she instinctively refused.

“It’s alright. The Court was just following procedure.”

“This is too much; you shouldn’t have.” She insisted, “Really, it’s fine. I didn’t take it personally.”

    She meant it sincerely.

Although she hadn’t done anything wrong, she had been caught in the middle of a complicated situation, a confluence of coincidences and chance encounters. She held no resentment towards them and didn’t think an apology was necessary.

“Alright!” Lan Lubai conceded. “Then consider it a friendly gesture. It’s only polite to bring a gift when visiting a friend’s home for the first time.”

    Min Man agreed. “Exactly.”

Frankly, Ming Fei didn’t want any connection to the Court. She just wanted to return to her peaceful and fulfilling life. But that was no longer entirely within her control. She now had a… profound connection to the highest authority in the Court.

While Ming Fei was still hesitating, Ming Zaozao, having woken from her nap, emerged from her room, followed by Quanquan the robot dog. Seeing her mother and the two “aunties,” Ming Zaozao’s eyes lit up, and she ran towards them.

    “Mama, Baby’s awake!”

Then, she greeted the other two cheerfully, “Hello Auntie Lulu, hello Auntie Manman! Are you here to play with Baby?”

In no time, the three were happily playing together. Ming Fei accepted the gifts and went to her study to change, preparing to leave for her meeting with Zhu Yiqiao.

Before leaving, she thanked the two officers, briefly explained to Ming Zaozao why she had to go out, and was about to give them instructions on caring for her daughter when Lan Lubai, clearly prepared, pulled out a certificate.

“Don’t worry! I’m a government-certified Level 10 childcare professional.” Lan Lubai said with a touch of wistful pride. “When I was fifteen, I really wanted to be a preschool teacher, but my mom wanted me to go to military school. So I just got the certification and became a part-time childcare professional instead.”

Min Man, without missing a beat, revealed, “That’s because on your first day as a trainee teacher, you almost blew up the kindergarten kitchen and were subsequently blacklisted by every preschool in Xi He City.”

    Lan Lubai: …

Ming Zaozao, only partially understanding, clapped her hands. “Wow~ So cool!”

Ming Fei smiled, bent down, and kissed Ming Zaozao’s cheek before leaving.

Huimin Road was the largest shopping street in the city center.

It was a thirty-minute drive from Huifu Gardens. Lost in thought during the journey, Ming Fei arrived at her destination, opened a black umbrella, and stepped out of the car, scanning the street for Zhu Yiqiao.

The large umbrella shielded her completely, the slanting rain only reaching her pant legs.

A chill seeped through her clothes, and Ming Fei, dressed in a black trench coat, sneezed. Just as she was about to message Zhu Yiqiao, a voice called out from her right.

“Excuse me, are you Ms. Ming?”

Ming Fei turned and saw a woman in a dark suit. “Yes, I am. And you are…?”

The woman smiled professionally. “You can call me Xiao Li, Ms. Ming. Chief Justice Zhu sent me to pick you up.”

    Chief… Chief Justice Zhu?

Ming Fei was puzzled but didn’t pry, politely following the woman. They crossed a pedestrian bridge and arrived at Déjàdé, the most luxurious hotel in the central business district.

Stepping into the opulent lobby, the woman led her directly to the top floor. As they approached their destination, Ming Fei’s heart pounded faster.

The soundproofing was impeccable, yet Ming Fei could almost hear the rain against the windows. When the woman pushed open the dark arched doorway at the end of the hallway, Ming Fei couldn’t tell whether it was her heart or the rain outside beating faster.

    “Ms. Ming, please come in.”

    Ming Fei said, “Thank you.”

    “You’re welcome.”

The arched doorway slowly closed behind her. Ming Fei, feigning composure, surveyed the room’s décor and furnishings. Realizing that even a single vase in the display cabinet was worth a fortune, she began to seriously consider Zhu Yiqiao’s hidden wealth and influence.

The woman seated at the head of the ebony table interrupted her wandering thoughts.

    “—Ming Fei.”

Ming Fei responded softly, “Yes, Chief Justice Zhu.”

She remained standing, her posture tall and straight. “Did you need something?”

    “Sit.”

Ming Fei chose the seat furthest from Zhu Yiqiao.

Zhu Yiqiao didn’t seem to mind, only studying her calmly, her gaze no longer cold but intense, like a flickering flame tracing Ming Fei’s features.

A white device rose from the table, gliding towards Ming Fei.

Zhu Yiqiao rested her chin on her hand and said slowly, “This is the latest military-grade lie detector, developed just two days ago by the Science Academy.”

Ming Fei’s heart hammered against her ribs.

Then, Zhu Yiqiao issued a command, her tone brooking no argument.

    “—Ming Fei.”

“—Put it on and answer all my questions.”

    Chapter 11: The Chief Justice… Actually Likes…

The playroom was cozy and inviting.

The shelves on the right displayed an array of beautiful and unique handicrafts. A wall-mounted display showcased photos of Ming Zaozao from birth to age two, ending with a framed collection of her crayon drawings. A custom-built cabinet on the left held a variety of Lego sets, and along the wall, a colorful assortment of plushies stood neatly arranged by height.

The center of the room was spacious, covered with a soft, light pink rug, and four colorful stars hung from the corners.

Ming Zaozao, noticing the pretty auntie had suddenly become still, scurried over, picked up the flower drum, and ran back to her, shaking the drum and its bells.

“Auntie, do you like this drum too?”

Zhu Yiqiao’s gaze shifted to Ming Zaozao, studying her intently for a few seconds before lowering her eyes and softly replying, “Yes, it’s beautiful.” She then asked, “May I take a closer look?”

Ming Zaozao readily offered it. “Here!”

Zhu Yiqiao took the drum, carefully examining the embroidered patterns on its surface. Her pale fingertips traced the protective bells around the drum’s edge, then followed the bell tassels to the drum’s handle, checking it thoroughly before returning it to Ming Zaozao, the coldness in her eyes receding slightly.

At first glance, it had indeed seemed similar.

But the drum’s material, the embroidered patterns, and the bells hanging on its sides were all different from the authentic grape-embellished, bell-adorned, orchid-patterned drum. It wasn’t even a close replica.

“My Mama made it!” Ming Zaozao declared proudly. “My Mama can make anything!”

Zhu Yiqiao followed Ming Zaozao. Passing the shelves on the right, she looked at the dazzling array of handicrafts and, for the first time, asked, “She made all of these?”

    Ming Zaozao nodded. “Mm-hmm!”

She was very proud of her mother and treasured these handmade creations, always handling them with care. Now, she gently picked up two bamboo figures.

“This big one is Mama,” she said with a bright smile, “and the small one is Baby.”

Alone with Ming Zaozao, Zhu Yiqiao was far gentler than when she was with Ming Fei. She glanced at the larger bamboo figure and then focused on the small, round one, the coldness in her voice completely gone.

    “May I call you Zaozao?”

Ming Zaozao didn’t hesitate. “Yes! Baby likes that!”

Zhu Yiqiao asked, “Did Zaozao draw this?”

The faces of both bamboo figures had simple features painted on them. The smaller one had round eyes and rosy cheeks, crafted with delicate detail.

Ming Zaozao shook her head. “Mama did.”

“Mama said Baby was too little then. Now, Baby can draw too!”

Zhu Yiqiao hummed in agreement, following the chattering Ming Zaozao, taking in the various handicrafts on display: a galaxy wood carving, a peacock feather brooch, a botanical print, silk flowers and ceramics, paper lanterns and miniature walnut carvings.

The display ended with an apple-green camera.

Ming Zaozao picked up her little camera, her eyes shining. “This is Baby’s camera. Mama gave it to Baby.”

Zhu Yiqiao hadn’t come empty-handed. She had brought gifts for the little girl, including an assortment of snacks. Ming Zaozao was delighted with the gifts but hadn’t reacted with such unrestrained joy before.

So, Zhu Yiqiao asked, “Was it a birthday present?”

    “Yes!”

Ming Zaozao explained, “Mama takes pictures of Baby, lots and lots of pictures. Baby asked Mama if she had any pictures of herself as a baby, and Mama said… she didn’t.”

Speaking so much at once was a bit of a challenge for a two-year-old.

“Baby asked why, and Mama said no one took pictures of her.”

Ming Zaozao held up the camera and made a clicking sound. “So Baby told Mama Baby wanted a camera as a present, so Baby could take pictures of Mama, lots and lots of pictures.”

The pumpkin, red date, and millet porridge simmering on the stove was almost ready.

Ming Fei rolled up the tomato and egg crepes she’d made, then prepared three milk-flavored pancakes and two cheese, luncheon meat, and egg sandwiches. Once all the dishes were ready, she removed her apron and carried the plates to the dining table.

This ordinary weekend should have been peaceful and relaxing, but her life had been turned upside down in just a few days. Someone who should have remained a stranger had barged into her world.

Forcefully, coldly, and irrevocably disrupting her tranquil life.

And she… for various complicated reasons, had no right to refuse.

Ming Fei pressed her lips together, a habitual gesture whenever she felt nervous. After last night, she realized she was still incredibly anxious and inexperienced in dealing with Zhu Yiqiao. Zhu Yiqiao was too perceptive, and while Ming Fei hadn’t committed any crime, she harbored a significant secret.

    —She was a transmigrant.

Although the Yi Meng Independent State valued openness, freedom, and equality, if Zhu Yiqiao were to discover this, she would undoubtedly be detained and interrogated again.

    Ming Fei sighed inwardly.

After composing herself, Ming Fei turned to go to the playroom and saw Ming Zaozao leading Zhu Yiqiao to the dining table.

    “Mama!”

Ming Zaozao sat in her booster seat, her elbows on the table, her hands framing her round face, radiating pure joy.

    “Smells so good~”

“Mama’s so amazing!” She swung her feet. “Baby loves Mama’s breakfast the most!”

A smile bloomed on Ming Fei’s face. She served porridge to both Ming Zaozao and Zhu Yiqiao. Once Ming Zaozao started eating enthusiastically, Ming Fei sat down and picked up her sandwich.

With Ming Zaozao present, the atmosphere between her and Zhu Yiqiao wasn’t as awkward as last night. They even managed to exchange a few words, prompted by Ming Zaozao’s chatter.

After breakfast, Ming Zaozao and 008 started playing hide-and-seek.

Shortly after, Zhu Yiqiao left for an appointment. Before leaving, she exchanged contact information with Ming Fei, a gesture that seemed almost surreal. Even after Zhu Yiqiao left, Ming Fei still stared at her phone in a daze.

Ming Zaozao, victorious in her game of hide-and-seek, bounced over to Ming Fei.

    “Mama.”

“Hmm?” Ming Fei stroked her head. “What is it, Zaozao?”

“Mama, can you make another flower drum?” Ming Zaozao explained, “Auntie went to my playroom today, and she really liked the flower drum.”

“Auntie also promised to take Baby to the aquarium next time.” Ming Zaozao snuggled into her arms, her voice sweet and coaxing. “Auntie looked at it for a long time, she really, really liked the flower drum!”

    Ming Fei paused.

    That grape-embellished, bell-adorned, orchid-patterned drum?

    Zhu Yiqiao… liked it?

She had made that drum a long time ago, when Ming Zaozao was only six months old, still babbling, a picture of cherubic innocence. To entertain her daughter, Ming Fei had made many handmade toys, including that drum.

But at the time, some materials had been unavailable, and her eye infection had flared up, so she’d altered the design and embroidery.

Could the powerful and esteemed Chief Justice… truly like such an ordinary toy drum?

    “Mama, do you have time?”

Ming Fei replied, “I do, but it will take a while to make. Zaozao, can we give her the gift next month?”

    Ming Zaozao readily agreed. “Okay!”

She kissed Ming Fei’s cheek twice. “Thank you, Mama!”

    “You’re welcome.”

The weather was beautiful this morning, sunny and bright. After watering the plants on the balcony, Ming Fei went to her bedroom to check on yesterday’s system malfunction.

The hacker’s intentions had been clear, but ultimately, they had failed, defeated by her security system.

Ming Fei smiled, then began patching the remaining vulnerabilities, reinforcing and upgrading the system. She also added a WEQS device.

Now, if anyone tried to hack her system again, she could immediately pinpoint their location and launch a counterattack, crippling their system.

The weather forecasts in the Yi Meng Independent State were highly accurate.

The forecast had predicted clear skies in the morning, followed by steady rain starting around 1:40 pm and lasting for a full day.

As the predicted time approached, dark clouds gathered in the sky, confirming the forecast.

Ming Fei had a habit of exercising every weekend.

At 2:00 pm, with the wind and rain picking up outside, Ming Zaozao was sound asleep. Ming Fei changed into her workout clothes and went to the gym downstairs. After an hour of cardio, she returned home, showered, and was about to settle down with a book when she received a message from Li Xing.

[Have the Court officials contacted you again recently?]

Ming Fei set down her glass of water and quickly replied.

    [What’s wrong?]

She habitually wanted to add a smiling emoji but remembered Li Xing’s comment about it seeming old-fashioned. Instead, she used one of the emojis Ming Zaozao had added to her keyboard.

    [Confused kitten looking up.jpg]

    Li Xing’s reply came quickly.

[I heard from my grandma that the Court and the Taiya Kingdom police jointly apprehended a government official. I think they’re about to make a big move.]

[I’m worried they’ll come bother you again. Last time, Zaozao cried so much I couldn’t console her. It broke my heart!!!]

    Ming Fei pondered this.

The Court had publicly promised to release the list of everyone involved in the gene theft next month. There were less than two weeks left. If they were planning a major operation soon, wouldn’t that mean… Zhu Yiqiao would be away for a while?

This thought brought a smile to Ming Fei’s face.

After all, the thing she dreaded most right now was spending every waking moment with the intimidating Chief Justice.

Relieved by this news, Ming Fei quickly replied to her friend.

[Don’t worry, they haven’t contacted me again.]

[Thank you for everything last time. I’ll treat you to dinner soon.]

But fate had other plans. Her happiness was short-lived. The next moment, she received a message from Zhu Yiqiao.

The message was brief and unyielding—leaving no room for refusal.

    [Come to Huimin Road.]

    [One hour.]

Chapter 10: Sharing a Bed in the Dead of Night

The living room was spacious, and the custom-designed sofa Ming Fei had ordered was fourteen feet long, easily accommodating two adults.

However, the unfamiliarity between them made things awkward.

Moreover, there was still a lingering tension, suspicion, and mistrust between them.

“Alright,” Ming Fei instinctively refused, “But there’s no need for the sofa. I’m feeling better now.”

“There’s no reason for you to stay up,” she said with a small smile. “Besides, I promised Zaozao I’d take good care of you and make sure you didn’t get hurt fighting monsters.”

Mentioning Ming Zaozao seemed to ease the tension slightly.

Zhu Yiqiao didn’t argue. She placed her pistol in the drawer, picked up the light apricot blanket, and tossed it to Ming Fei.

    “Cover yourself.”

Her expression was neutral. “With the crease as the dividing line, you sleep on the left, and I’ll sleep on the right.”

Ming Fei wanted to refuse again, but seeing Zhu Yiqiao’s indifferent gaze, she swallowed her words.

“Okay,” she said softly. “I won’t cross the line.”

The pumpkin nightlight cast a soft orange glow on one end of the sofa, their shadows on the floor like a plump tangerine. They lay on the sofa, separated by the crease, neither disturbing the other.

Ming Fei closed her eyes, snuggled under the soft blanket, and counted a hundred sheep. Then, she suddenly opened her eyes again.

    Was Zhu Yiqiao asleep?

Should she cover her with the blanket?

After all, Zhu Yiqiao’s bathrobe didn’t seem as warm as her pajamas.

Lost in thought, Ming Fei shifted slightly.

She’d been careful to avoid making any noise, but the next moment, a clear voice called out, “—Ming Fei.”

Ming Fei’s immediate reaction to the sound of Zhu Yiqiao’s voice was a jolt of anxiety.

    “Y-Yes?”

    “Chief Justice Zhu, I’m here.”

The right side of the sofa was shrouded in shadow, beyond the reach of the pumpkin nightlight. Zhu Yiqiao, in her black bathrobe, blended seamlessly with the darkness.

“Did you design Huifu Gardens’ security system yourself?”

    Ming Fei answered truthfully, “Yes.”

“As far as I know, your research and work focus on the development of core components for robots. This seems vastly different from your professional expertise.”

Ming Fei paused, realizing… Chief Justice Zhu’s suspicions hadn’t abated.

“Chief Justice Zhu, the Yi Meng Independent State grants a year of parental leave to individuals who successfully undergo gene matching and conception.” Ming Fei explained softly, “During that year, things weren’t too difficult. I had 008 and Aunt Jiang, whom I hired from a childcare center, helping me with Zaozao. So, I had a lot of free time.”

“Besides fishing and hiking, I don’t have many hobbies. So I used that time to read books in various fields and learn new skills, including, as you mentioned, home security systems.”

Perhaps because of the distance between them, Zhu Yiqiao’s voice seemed faint, veiled by the darkness. But just two words were enough to disarm Ming Fei.

    “Is that so?”

Ming Fei bit her lip, suddenly missing the warmth of Ming Zaozao in her arms.

She thought, if only everyone were as sweet as Ming Zaozao.

“Yes.” Trying to change the subject, wanting to escape the scrutiny, she offered, “Chief Justice Zhu, are you sure you don’t need this blanket? My pajamas are thick. I’ll be fine without it.”

Just as Ming Fei was about to assume Zhu Yiqiao had fallen asleep, that cool, clear voice spoke again.

“Ming Yi told me her mother gets cold easily.”

“And all soldiers in the Independent State undergo extreme temperature training during their service.”

The floodgates of memory opened, and a news report flashed through Ming Fei’s mind. It was her third year in this world, and she was still shuttling between the lab and the cafeteria, struggling to complete her studies.

One evening, she’d fallen asleep in the lab. When she woke up, she was alone.

Her stomach rumbling in protest, she packed her things and headed to the cafeteria. As she descended to the first floor, she caught a glimpse of a news report on the public screen. She was too far away to read the headline clearly, only remembering it seemed to be announcing a significant victory in some war.

It was freezing that day, but the person being interviewed was dressed lightly, a bandage on their cheek, their blue eyes captivating.

She had stopped in her tracks.

That was the first time she’d encountered someone in this world with the same distinctive features as the nobles in her previous ABO world. It was also the first time the name Zhu Yiqiao had made an impression on her.

Snapping back to the present, Ming Fei blinked, pulling the blanket tighter around herself.

“Alright, thank you, Chief Justice Zhu.”

    Zhu Yiqiao didn’t respond.

Every night before bed, Ming Fei would habitually say goodnight to Ming Zaozao. Since Ming Zaozao wasn’t with her tonight, she whispered goodnight silently.

And, impulsively, she also whispered goodnight to the not-so-intimidating Chief Justice.

Early the next morning, as the birds outside began to chirp, Ming Zaozao, sprawled out on her bed, woke up.

She rubbed her eyes, instinctively reaching for her mother.

After looking around the room, Ming Zaozao, her hair a mess of curls, remembered last night’s events. She was about to climb out of bed and go to the living room when Ming Fei, who had been absent all night, opened the door.

    “Mama.”

Ming Fei walked over and picked her up. “Zaozao, you’re up so early.”

“Mm.” Ming Zaozao mumbled, “Baby dreamt Mama and Auntie defeated lots and lots of monsters.”

Ming Fei chuckled. “Were you scared of the monsters, Zaozao?”

“Baby’s not scared!” Ming Zaozao clenched her tiny fists. “Baby’s brave!”

Ming Fei smiled, took her to wash up and get dressed, and then led her out of the room. Noticing Zhu Yiqiao wasn’t there, Ming Zaozao’s invisible, wagging tail seemed to droop. She wasn’t quite as cheerful.

Ming Fei went to the kitchen to make breakfast. While Ming Zaozao was drinking her milk, circling Quanquan the robot dog, Zhu Yiqiao emerged from the master bedroom.

Seeing this, Ming Zaozao set down her pink bottle, ran over, and looked up at Zhu Yiqiao, her round face lighting up.

    “Auntie, good morning!”

    “Morning.”

Before the 5’10” Zhu Yiqiao, Ming Zaozao looked like a tiny sapling. She reached out to Zhu Yiqiao like a kitten cautiously extending a paw in the presence of a larger creature.

“Auntie said yesterday she’d visit Baby’s playroom. We can go now!”

    Zhu Yiqiao agreed. “Alright.”

Ming Zaozao happily ran ahead, opening the door to her playroom for Zhu Yiqiao. But as Zhu Yiqiao stepped inside, her gaze was immediately drawn to a handmade object.

    —A grape-embellished, bell-adorned, orchid-patterned toy drum.

    A toy from her…

A sudden thought flickered across her mind, her eyes turning as cold as ice.

    Chapter 9: Like Cornered Prey

Ming Fei couldn’t understand why she was experiencing such a rare and unsettling episode.

The stinging in her gland made her lightheaded. Ignoring Zhu Yiqiao beside her, she slid down the wall, crouching down and covering her face with her hands.

    Slender, pale, vulnerable—like cornered prey.

Zhu Yiqiao, who had emerged from the bathroom after noticing something amiss and grabbed her pistol, didn’t press the issue further. She picked up Ming Fei’s phone and waited quietly beside her.

The encroaching darkness made Zhu Yiqiao seem even more dangerous. Her grip on her pistol remained firm, seemingly casual yet fully in control of the situation.

Fortunately, the stinging sensation didn’t last long.

After a few minutes, Ming Fei’s mind cleared. She lowered her hands, looked at Zhu Yiqiao, and spoke, her voice slightly hoarse.

“…Sorry,” she said. “I don’t know why the system malfunctioned.”

“When the system fails, all the doors lock automatically, activating the highest level of security. My computer is in Zaozao’s room, so I can’t diagnose the problem… We’ll just have to wait for it to fix itself before we can go back to our rooms.”

Zhu Yiqiao asked calmly, “How long will that take?”

    Ming Fei replied, “Eight hours.”

She could understand how the Court officials had silently bypassed her security system during their earlier visit. The Court, along with the military and government, had access to the most advanced technology and personnel. But tonight, besides deliberate hacking, Ming Fei couldn’t fathom any other reason for her meticulously designed security system to malfunction and activate the highest level of security protocols.

She mentally reviewed her life. She was a gentle and kind person, never making enemies. And since Ming Zaozao’s birth, her days had been peaceful and fulfilling, free of conflict.

So… who would deliberately sabotage her system, illegally invading her home?

After a brief contemplation, Ming Fei arrived at a conclusion.

    “Chief Justice Zhu.”

    “Hmm?”

“May I ask, does anyone else know about… what happened between us, regarding Zaozao?”

Zhu Yiqiao answered without hesitation, “The list of gene theft victims was revealed during a meeting. My name is on it.”

Ming Fei paused for a few seconds, then shared her suspicion with Zhu Yiqiao. Zhu Yiqiao wasn’t surprised. She toyed with her pistol, her gaze darkening.

    She stated, “Someone’s getting desperate.”

“I could find you quickly, so someone else is just a step behind me.”

“The faster the Court moves, the more anxious they become. Tonight, they’re desperate enough to target you.”

Ming Fei wasn’t privy to the power plays between these factions. She was an ordinary person whose biggest worry was her work. She never imagined she’d be caught in the crossfire.

    She asked, puzzled, “Target… me?”

Zhu Yiqiao explained slowly, “Ming Fei, as you said, the circumstances surrounding our… situation are quite coincidental. If one element were different, things wouldn’t have unfolded this way. And anyone involved would scrutinize these coincidences. If they can extract any secret from you about these coincidences, it could create a scandal, making me a target.”

Ming Fei argued, “But you’re innocent. You haven’t done anything wrong. You’re the victim in this.”

Perhaps finding her naivety amusing, Zhu Yiqiao elaborated, a rare occurrence, “But power attracts malice.”

Ming Fei remained silent for a long time, finally saying, “I’m sorry.”

    “For what?”

Ming Fei met her gaze. “For the genetic sample. I didn’t know it was… misplaced. I’m truly sorry.”

Before undergoing the gene matching procedure, the staff had explained the process in detail. Although there were numerous compatibility requirements, generally, after completing all the tests, candidates would match with several genetic samples and then choose one.

But in her case, out of the entire gene bank, there was only one match.

—Sample YQ1123, Zhu Yiqiao’s genetic sample.

“Ring, ring, ring… Ding, ding, dong—”

The incoming video call ringtone interrupted their conversation.

Ming Fei murmured another apology before quickly answering the call.

Ming Zaozao’s round face appeared on the screen, her cheeks flushed from sleep. She yawned before asking softly, “Mama, where are you?”

“It was dark just now, Huahua turned on the light for Baby.”

Ming Fei briefly explained the situation to her daughter and reassured her, telling her to sleep with the nightlight on, and they would see each other in the morning.

    Ming Zaozao was obedient. “Okay!”

“Mama and Auntie are fighting monsters, Baby will sleep.” She added, “And Mama and Auntie, don’t get hurt.”

Charmed by her daughter’s innocent logic, Ming Fei relaxed unconsciously, the tension easing from her shoulders. Her gentle features softened further as a smile touched her lips. Zhu Yiqiao watched her quietly for a few seconds before looking away, her expression unreadable.

As the call ended, Ming Zaozao said goodnight to Ming Fei and then, in her sweet, childish voice, to Zhu Yiqiao.

    “Auntie, goodnight.”

Zhu Yiqiao appeared on screen, her voice losing some of its coldness. “Goodnight.”

    “See you tomorrow, Auntie!”

Ming Zaozao hugged her giant goose plushie and hung up the call.

Silence returned to the hallway outside the bedroom. Ming Fei, using her phone as a flashlight, led the way. “Chief Justice Zhu, let’s go to the living room.”

They walked to the living room, one after the other.

Pale moonlight streamed in from the balcony, illuminating the potted plants. Ming Fei turned on the small pumpkin nightlight beside the cabinet, casting a soft glow across the room, improving visibility.

With the system malfunctioning, the heating and electricity in the entire apartment were affected.

They were trapped inside, and no one could get in.

Ming Fei looked around the living room and decided to offer the blanket and sofa to Zhu Yiqiao, planning to stay up all night herself.

    “Chief Justice Zhu—”

    “Ming Fei—”

Their voices overlapped. Ming Fei looked at Zhu Yiqiao, who was standing to her southeast, a question in her eyes.

    “Chief Justice Zhu, you first.”

“Your records indicate you’re in excellent health, but ten minutes ago, you seemed unwell.” Zhu Yiqiao set down her pistol. “What happened?”

Ming Fei offered a casual excuse, “I might have eaten too much at dinner. My stomach feels a bit upset.”

    “Then you should rest.”

Ming Fei shook her head. “You take the sofa; I’ll stay up.”

“I wouldn’t make someone with an upset stomach suffer.” Zhu Yiqiao corrected her. “And as I’ve already mentioned—”

“—We are not in a superior-subordinate relationship. There’s no need to be so formal.”

Chapter 8: Alone in a Room

Ming Fei had imagined Zhu Yiqiao’s arrival would be just like what she’d seen on the public broadcasts.

Surrounded by numerous Court officials, dressed in a dark uniform, medals gleaming on her shoulders, her customary pistol at her waist. In short, any scene with the Chief Justice would be exceptional.

But as the door slowly opened, the Chief Justice standing outside looked different than usual.

She was still wearing her Court uniform, but only the white undershirt, her jacket draped over her arm. The top button, usually fastened, was undone today, and her sleeves were rolled up to her elbows, revealing pale wrists.

Her slightly wavy black hair was loose, the ends damp, as if she’d been caught in the rain.

They stood facing each other, Ming Fei averting her gaze, offering a polite greeting. “Chief Justice Zhu, you’ve arrived.”

    Zhu Yiqiao nodded slightly. “Mm.”

Ming Fei retrieved the new fluffy slippers she’d bought from the shoe cabinet and placed them on the entrance mat. After Zhu Yiqiao changed her shoes, Ming Fei asked softly, “Chief Justice Zhu, could you please leave your sidearm in the bedroom?”

She explained, “I’m worried Zaozao might be scared.”

In truth, she was also still apprehensive. The last time Zhu Yiqiao had entered her home, a gun had been pointed at her head, and later, at her chin. A single pull of the trigger could have ended her life.

    Such a dangerous object shouldn’t be around a two-year-old.

Zhu Yiqiao silently removed her sidearm and placed it in the empty safe nearby. Only after completing this action did she look up, observing Ming Fei’s reaction.

“We’re not in a superior-subordinate relationship,” she stated. “Don’t address me so formally, especially in front of Ming Yi.”

    Ming Fei nodded. “Alright.”

Ming Zaozao, engrossed in her Flying Kitty cartoon on the sofa, took a moment to register the activity at the entrance. Wearing her pink bunny slippers, she toddled over, breaking the strange tension between the two women.

“Pretty Auntie!” she exclaimed cheerfully. “Good evening!”

    Zhu Yiqiao: “Good evening.”

Ming Zaozao reached out her arms. “Up! Auntie, hold Baby!”

Just as Ming Fei was about to suggest an alternative activity, so her daughter wouldn’t be disappointed, Zhu Yiqiao crouched down and picked Ming Zaozao up. Now that they were close, Ming Fei noticed the resemblance between them.

Apart from their eyes, they actually looked quite alike, she thought.

Unlike Ming Fei’s reserved nature, Ming Zaozao was incredibly outgoing. Ming Fei trailed behind them in silence, listening to Ming Zaozao excitedly recount the plot of her favorite cartoon to Zhu Yiqiao, chattering like a little bird.

She’d assumed the Chief Justice wouldn’t be familiar with such things, but she was wrong.

Zhu Yiqiao not only understood what Ming Zaozao was saying, but she also responded with details from the cartoon.

When Ming Zaozao went to retrieve a gift from her room, perhaps noticing Ming Fei’s obvious surprise, Zhu Yiqiao offered an explanation, a rare instance of her initiating conversation.

    “It’s Lan Lubai.”

“Her way of de-stressing is watching children’s cartoons and then retelling the stories.”

Ming Fei, slightly face-blind, still struggled to differentiate between Lan Lubai and Min Man. But what surprised her more was Zhu Yiqiao’s unprompted explanation. Her feelings towards Zhu Yiqiao were complicated—admiration, like any citizen of Yi Meng Independent State, fear from having a gun pointed at her, guilt and remorse for unknowingly using her genetic material, and an unspoken sense of worry and dread.

These complex emotions swirled within her, leaving her unsure how to interact with Zhu Yiqiao.

Moreover, she felt Zhu Yiqiao’s suspicions hadn’t entirely dissipated, and this “cohabitation” was likely a form of subtle surveillance. If she showed any sign of anything amiss, Ming Fei believed Zhu Yiqiao would immediately turn that pistol on her.

Despite her inner turmoil, Ming Fei maintained a polite smile.

She replied, “Executive Officer Lan has an interesting way of relaxing.”

Perhaps her response was too bland. Even 008 couldn’t resist displaying a sweating emoji on its screen. It began announcing the time, as if to alleviate the awkwardness.

“It is currently 19:06, September 15, 167 New Era. A rainstorm is expected to hit Xi He City in half an hour. Please—”

Ming Zaozao emerged from her room, holding a gift. “Huahua, you can rest now. We’ll play later.”

    008: “Okay, Baby ^^”

Ming Zaozao placed the gift, which she had been working on for two days, on the table. Her eyes sparkling with anticipation, she proudly presented it.

“This is Baby’s present for Auntie.”

“It’s Baby’s favorite—little bunnies! The house is pink. The little white bunny in the middle can spin, the little grey bunny on the left can sing, and the little yellow bunny on the right can dance.”

“Baby worked on it for two days!” She looked up at Zhu Yiqiao. “Auntie, do you like it?”

    “—I do.”

    Zhu Yiqiao added, “Thank you.”

Both during her military service and after her appointment to the Court, Zhu Yiqiao had received countless valuable gifts. She’d never paid them much attention. But today, she found herself wanting to display this pink bunny Lego house in her display cabinet.

Ming Zaozao beamed, her eyes curving into crescents. “You’re welcome. Welcome to Baby’s house, Auntie.”

Dinner was a lavish affair. Ming Zaozao ate until her tummy was round and full, and soon after, she started to get sleepy.

Ming Fei maintained a healthy sleep schedule. Usually, after dinner and some light activity, she would tidy up and be in bed by ten. But tonight, she hadn’t gone to bed yet, even though it was past ten.

Because Zhu Yiqiao was still working in the study, and Ming Fei was too anxious to sleep before Zhu Yiqiao did, worried something might go wrong.

At 10:25 pm, the light in the study finally went off.

Ming Fei, pretending to watch a documentary in the living room, observed Zhu Yiqiao from the corner of her eye. Soon, the woman disappeared down the hallway and into the master bedroom.

After waiting a while longer, Ming Fei finally felt confident that the night would pass without incident. She stood up, finished the lukewarm water in her glass, and was about to head to bed when, suddenly, the lights in the living room went out.

The smart home system had malfunctioned.

Realizing this, Ming Fei immediately went to find Zhu Yiqiao. She had to make sure Zhu Yiqiao was in her room. When the system malfunctioned, it automatically activated the security locks, sealing all the rooms until the system was restored.

Unfortunately—Zhu Yiqiao emerged from her room into the hallway at that exact moment.

Ming Fei bit her lip. This meant she was about to be alone in a room with Zhu Yiqiao.

Zhu Yiqiao had changed out of her uniform shirt into a plain black bathrobe. As Ming Fei saw her clearly in the light from her phone screen, Zhu Yiqiao was also looking at her, a pistol gripped in her right hand.

Like a predator poised to strike.

Their shadows drew closer. As Zhu Yiqiao approached, Ming Fei caught a whiff of a subtle, almost imperceptible, fir scent.

Suddenly, a sharp sting shot through her gland, like a cat’s unexpected scratch. She lost her grip on her phone, and it clattered onto the carpet.

Zhu Yiqiao’s voice was cold. “What’s wrong?”

  • Inferior A After Having a Baby with the Top Boss 7

Chapter 7: Living With… Zhu Yiqiao

On the ride back to Huifu Gardens, Ming Fei was in a daze.

It wasn’t until Li Xing waved her phone in front of Ming Fei’s face and called her name twice that she snapped out of her stupor from the recent conversation with Zhu Yiqiao.

    “—Ming Fei, Ming Fei.”

    “Huh?”

“What are you thinking about?” Li Xing pinched Ming Zaozao’s cheek. “What’s going on? How did you get involved with the Court?”

This wasn’t something easily explained in a few words, especially after learning about… Zhu Yiqiao’s other role in her life. Ming Fei was utterly bewildered.

She opened the car window, taking a deep breath. “What did Secretary-General Wei tell you?”

The post-rain autumn breeze carried lingering moisture. Li Xing’s bangs fluttered in the wind as she tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear. Just as she was about to answer, Ming Zaozao, sitting between them, leaned against Ming Fei.

Ming Zaozao hadn’t slept well these past two days, had woken up early this morning, and had cried several times. Now, in the car, her eyelids were drooping.

“Mama,” she mumbled, rubbing her eyes. “Baby’s sleepy.”

They quickly closed the window. The autopilot system pulled the car over to the side of the road, and Ming Fei carried Ming Zaozao to the back seat. She bent down and kissed her cheek, tucked her in, and returned to the front seat once Ming Zaozao was asleep.

A faint scent of gardenia filled the car, calming and refreshing.

Lowering her voice, Li Xing finally replied, “Wei Lingyu told me you were connected to a case they’re investigating. She didn’t give me any details, just asked me to look after Zaozao for a couple of days.”

Ming Fei carefully chose her words. “The Court found a location linked to the SE Group’s gene theft operation. I’d been there before when I was buying something for Zaozao, and I’d also contacted the manager online. Because of several coincidences, the Court brought me in for questioning.”

It wasn’t that she didn’t trust Li Xing. This matter was too complicated, both professionally and personally. Before the individuals involved in the gene theft were apprehended, and before Zhu Yiqiao made an official statement, Ming Fei felt it was best to keep things quiet.

“What?!” Li Xing was astonished. “How can that be such a coincidence?”

“Yes.” A flicker of helplessness crossed Ming Fei’s eyes. “It’s… just a coincidence.”

A coincidence so unbelievable she still couldn’t quite process it. That Chief Justice Zhu, admired, revered, and feared by the citizens of Yi Meng Independent State, someone at the pinnacle of power, was actually her daughter’s other biological mother.

Initially, when she heard Zhu Yiqiao say Ming Yi’s name under the ginkgo tree, Ming Fei hadn’t understood. As an ordinary citizen, she wouldn’t dare, nor would she want to, entertain such a thought. It seemed absurd.

So, she had simply smiled and replied to Zhu Yiqiao, “Yes, Zaozao is very cute. Chief Justice Zhu is so young and accomplished, I’m sure your daughter is also bright and adorable.”

    The next instant—

Zhu Yiqiao’s words shattered her carefully constructed facade of calm and composure.

    “Ming Yi is my daughter.”

If they ignored the cleaning robots sweeping up the fallen ginkgo leaves, it had been just the two of them under the tree. Yet Ming Fei felt a tremor, a deep resonance within her soul.

Ming Yi, Ming Zaozao, her daughter.

Zhu Yiqiao, the current Chief Justice of the Court.

Her mind, like an outdated processor in need of repair, struggled to process Zhu Yiqiao’s words. Slowly, she began to piece things together, to connect Ming Zaozao and Zhu Yiqiao. As the realization dawned on her that their relationship… might not be so simple after all, she finally understood why the head of the Court had appeared at Huifu Gardens.

It might be related to the gene theft case, but more importantly, it was likely because she had unknowingly used a genetic sample that wasn’t in the database.

—And that sample belonged to Zhu Yiqiao.

Understanding this, Ming Fei’s face paled, her hands trembling slightly.

But before the sword of Damocles hanging over her head fell, a sliver of hope remained. She looked up at the woman standing a few steps away, searching for any sign of hope in those eyes, which bore a slight resemblance to Ming Zaozao’s.

After a long, tense silence, her voice was hoarse when she finally spoke.

“Chief Justice Zhu,” she asked softly, “Could there be some kind of misunderstanding? Are you sure there’s no mistake?”

In contrast to her distress, Zhu Yiqiao was unnervingly calm. “A minute ago, all the information regarding Ming Yi and myself was sent to your phone.”

The cleaning robots swept the ground clean, not a single leaf remaining. Just like Ming Fei’s world before she turned twenty-two—barren and empty.

In the Yi Meng Independent State, a law enacted in the year 100 NE decreed that every Wednesday at 5:00 pm, the ancient bell at the Government Hall would toll in remembrance of those who perished during the viral crisis a century ago.

This day was no exception. The solemn, lingering sound of the bell reverberated through the air. As the last echoes faded, rain began to fall.

At that moment, two meetings had just concluded within the Court. The first focused on advancing the prosecutorial work in the South District, and the second revolved around the crucial gene theft case.

Following the meetings, major media outlets immediately reported the latest developments in the investigation—the Court was diligently pursuing all leads and promised to release a list of all individuals involved by next month.

In contrast to the heated discussions online, the Court building at 6:00 pm was quiet.

The only one working overtime was Secretary-General Wei Lingyu, who was currently in the Chief Justice’s office on the sixteenth floor, giving her report. Her hair, just past her shoulders, was neatly styled. She wore gold-rimmed glasses and a rose quartz wristwatch that seemed slightly at odds with her sharp, professional demeanor.

“…At 3:00 pm on September 11th, Ming Yi told me five times that she missed her mother. I asked Li Xing about Ming Yi’s usual behavior when separated from Ms. Ming. She said Ming Yi is very well-behaved and understanding and never pesters anyone saying she misses her mother.”

“At 7:00 pm on September 11th, according to incomplete statistics, Ming Yi expressed her longing for her mother a total of twenty times.”

“At 10:00 pm on September 11th, Ming Yi expressed this over thirty-five times, and in the last minute before falling asleep, she cried.”

“…At 7:45 am on September 12th, Ming Yi woke up crying and again…”

In the spacious office, Zhu Yiqiao, having removed her uniform jacket and now in a white shirt with sleeves rolled up to her elbows, retrieved a training pistol from a drawer. She fired a shot at the distant target, and as she raised the gun again, she turned her head and asked, “Anything else?”

Secretary-General Wei was accustomed to this. The Chief Justice’s constant companion was well-known within the Court, but as live firearms weren’t permitted inside the building, a training range had been set up in the right wing of her office.

Adjusting her glasses, Wei Lingyu continued, “Based on my observation and interaction with them, regardless of Ms. Ming’s possible involvement in the gene theft, she clearly cherishes Ming Yi. And Ming Yi also… In conclusion, Ms. Ming’s statements regarding the gene cultivation and Ming Yi are likely truthful.”

The last bullet was spent, and Zhu Yiqiao’s hair, previously tied back, came undone.

She didn’t bother fixing it, letting her long black hair cascade down. “Mm, thank you for your hard work.”

    “Click.”

After clearing security, Lan Lubai and Min Man suddenly appeared.

Lan Lubai, looking at the diligently working Secretary-General, commented with a smile, “Secretary-General Wei, still working?”

Wei Lingyu smiled. “It’s my honor to serve the Court.”

“That’s quite a unique watch you’re wearing today, Secretary-General Wei.”

“Yes.” Wei Lingyu’s smile widened. “My fiancée gave it to me.”

Zhu Yiqiao said, “You’ve worked hard. You can go home now.”

Wei Lingyu bowed slightly. “Goodbye, Chief Justice.”

The door closed again, leaving only the three of them. Zhu Yiqiao placed the empty pistol in the drawer, her gaze falling upon a file on her desk. She had ordered a full background check on Ming Fei after learning of her and Ming Yi’s existence. The few pages concisely summarized Ming Fei’s entire life.

She turned the last page, her eyes settling on the photo at the top.

Perhaps she paused for too long because Lan Lubai leaned in and asked, “Boss, what are you looking at?”

“Huh? Isn’t that Ming Fei’s picture?” The usually boisterous Lan Lubai paused. “Boss, what are you planning? You released Ming Fei early this afternoon, was it really all because of Zaozao?”

Zhu Yiqiao closed the file, calmly dropping a bombshell.

“I’ll be moving into Huifu Gardens on Friday.”

This time, not only was Lan Lubai shocked, but even the usually composed Min Man was stunned. Lan Lubai, at first surprised and bewildered, finally seemed to understand.

With a knowing look, she said, “Yiqiao, I knew it! You have other intentions towards Ming Fei, don’t you?”

Amidst the silence, Lan Lubai’s certainty grew. She seemed smug about having guessed Zhu Yiqiao’s thoughts, strutting around her like a peacock, observing her expression and solidifying her assumptions.

    “I was right, wasn’t I?”

“Yiqiao, oh Yiqiao, you’re on a roll! First, you discover you have an adorable daughter, and now you’ve found someone you like, and you’re about to have the perfect opportunity to woo her.”

“I’m truly happy for you, but how does the saying go? A troubled mind makes for an unsteady hand.” She recalled Ming Fei’s file. “Ming Fei is indeed quite remarkable, so young and already a university professor—”

Zhu Yiqiao, who had remained silent, retrieved her sidearm.

The gun she carried today was a Rose 1905, a gift from the current monarch of Yi Meng Independent State, her name engraved on the grip. She expertly loaded the pistol, as if preparing to fire at the target. Min Man quickly stopped her.

“Easy, easy! No guns allowed inside the Court.”

“I’m well aware of the regulations.” Zhu Yiqiao’s eyes darkened. “I’m just wondering, why would you assume I’d be interested in a bookworm?”

The three had met during their military service, becoming comrades, teammates, and friends. Zhu Yiqiao was the youngest, followed by Lan Lubai, with Min Man being the oldest. The reason they called the youngest “boss” was twofold: firstly, because of Zhu Yiqiao’s exceptional abilities, and secondly, because she had saved both their lives during a special mission.

Realizing her mistake, Lan Lubai quickly backtracked. “Alright, alright, you’re not interested in her.”

“Yiqiao, I understand you’re annoyed with Ming Fei. This whole thing is quite a coincidence, after all.”

Lan Lubai, who had the lowest academic scores among the three, added, “But she’s not exactly a bookworm, is she? Zaozao said she can do anything, she’s practically superhuman.”

Zhu Yiqiao seemed to chuckle. “Is that so?”

The pistol left her hand. She offered another assessment: “An incompetent bookworm.”

The rain had stopped, and the moon hung high in the night sky.

At 9:10 pm, the community activities at Huifu Gardens concluded, and quiet descended upon the complex.

Inside apartment B2 on the eighteenth floor, Ming Zaozao, clutching a teddy bear almost as big as herself, circled her mother repeatedly. After the fifth round, she set the bear down and climbed into Ming Fei’s lap.

    “Mama, what’s wrong?”

    “Hmm?”

Ming Zaozao tilted her head. “Baby was spinning, and Mama didn’t even see.”

Realizing she was lost in thought again, Ming Fei apologized, “Sorry, Zaozao. Mama’s very tired today, and my mind keeps wandering.”

“Mama’s tired, needs to sleep early.”

Looking at her daughter’s rosy cheeks, Ming Fei’s heart softened as she recalled the file she’d received that afternoon. The detailed information, sent from a private Court account, clearly explained how the genetic samples had been mixed up. It even included DNA evidence confirming the mother-daughter relationship between Ming Zaozao and Zhu Yiqiao.

Even though Ming Fei struggled to accept it, the facts shattered her last vestiges of hope.

The little one in her arms was as soft as a marshmallow. Ming Fei gently stroked her hair and softly suggested, “Tomorrow, Mama will move into Zaozao’s room and sleep with you, okay?”

Ming Zaozao readily agreed. “Okay! Baby wants that!”

“Then, is Zaozao willing to let that auntie with the blue eyes live with us?”

Ming Fei expected Ming Zaozao to need a moment to recall who Zhu Yiqiao was, but she remembered almost instantly.

“Pretty Auntie is coming to Baby’s house?” she asked. “Baby remembers her!”

Ming Zaozao’s eyes crinkled into a smile. “Baby remembers! That’s the auntie who let Baby go see Mama. Auntie even showed Baby cartoons, and Baby told her that Baby will give her a present next time.”

Ming Fei hadn’t known any of this.

After returning from the Court, she’d practically collapsed into bed, sleeping until evening before getting up to take some medicine. During dinner, Ming Zaozao was happily playing with 008 and Quanquan. Ming Fei hadn’t wanted to interrupt them, so she didn’t have a chance to ask about these things.

“She let you come see Mama?”

“Mm-hmm!” Ming Zaozao nodded. “Because the other aunties said Pretty Auntie is the boss, and only the boss could let Baby go see Mama.”

Ming Fei was surprised but didn’t probe further.

She kissed Ming Zaozao’s cheek. “Thank you, brave Zaozao, for coming to find Mama.”

“You’re welcome!” Ming Zaozao beamed, shaking her head. “Is Pretty Auntie really coming?”

    “Yes, probably for a while.”

    “Baby’s happy!”

“Good. Let’s make a pinky promise. When that auntie comes, Baby has to be obedient and not bother her, okay?”

At two years and two months old, Ming Zaozao didn’t quite grasp the concept of a pinky promise. She extended her thumb and pressed it against Ming Fei’s, like stamping a seal.

    “Baby will be good~”

“Then will Zaozao help Mama tidy the room tomorrow? That auntie will be moving in the day after tomorrow.”

Ming Zaozao held up her tiny hand and began counting, “Today, tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, the day after the day after tomorrow…”

Realizing how soon “the day after tomorrow” was, she immediately wriggled out of Ming Fei’s lap, grabbed her toy shovel, put on the little round hat Ming Fei had made for her, and declared with utmost seriousness, “Mama, not tomorrow.”

“Now!” Ming Zaozao insisted. “Sweep the floor now!”

Ming Fei couldn’t refuse her daughter, and besides, she agreed. So she put on a matching hat and started tidying up the master bedroom.

The four-bedroom, two-bathroom Huifu Gardens apartment spanned 2,034 square feet. Besides the two en-suite master bedrooms, Ming Fei had converted the other two rooms into a study and a playroom. One of the living rooms had been turned into a guest room for Aunt Wang to rest during the day or for Li Xing to stay over occasionally.

She couldn’t possibly have Zhu Yiqiao stay in the guest room.

Therefore, she had to tidy up her own master bedroom and temporarily move in with Ming Zaozao. She also had to clean up her study, as per Zhu Yiqiao’s request, for the Chief Justice’s use.

With a lot to do and limited time, Ming Fei dedicated all her free time over the next two days to this task.

Friday arrived before she knew it.

The Independent State’s four-day workweek and three-day weekend applied partially to government employees and students, meaning three days off on odd-numbered weeks and two days off on even-numbered weeks. Friday on this particular week was a regular workday and school day.

The Q University system had rescheduled Ming Fei’s classes from Friday afternoon to Friday morning.

During Ming Fei’s two days of detention, the university only knew she was on sick leave and nothing more. So, when Ming Fei arrived for her morning class, she was met with an outpouring of concern from her students.

Ming Fei was surprised. Her teaching style mirrored her personality—reserved and perhaps a bit dry. She had never ranked high in the student-voted “most popular teacher” polls.

So she’d never expected her students to notice her absence due to illness.

Throughout the class, the students listened attentively. Afterward, a few of the more outgoing students approached her, inquiring about her health.

Ming Fei’s eyes softened with a smile. “Thank you for your concern. I’m feeling much better now. I’ll see you all in class on Monday.”

Reassured, the students smiled and said their goodbyes.

Before leaving, Ming Fei handed out three bags of the chocolates she’d planned to bring home for Ming Zaozao to her students.

Ming Fei didn’t go to the lab today. Everything was running smoothly there, and there wasn’t anything urgent requiring her attention. Besides, this afternoon… the Chief Justice was coming, and she still had preparations to make at home.

After leaving the university, Ming Fei went downtown, shopping according to her pre-made list. Loaded with four large bags, she took the elevator down to the parking garage.

Traffic was heavy, and it was already noon by the time she arrived home.

As soon as she entered, Ming Zaozao latched onto her leg, chattering away as they walked inside. Aunt Wang had already prepared lunch, but Ming Fei didn’t ask her to stay. She knew Aunt Wang had to catch the early afternoon maglev train back to her hometown.

After lunch, Ming Zaozao obediently went to her room for a nap. Ming Fei continued to meticulously check her own room, ensuring everything was perfect for Zhu Yiqiao’s arrival.

At 3:00 pm, a steady autumn rain fell over Xi He City.

By 4:30 pm, the rain had intensified, forming small puddles on the roads within the complex.

Ming Fei had no way of knowing when Zhu Yiqiao would arrive. She didn’t have her contact information, so she could only wait patiently, filled with a mix of anxiety about the unknown and apprehension towards the Chief Justice herself.

At 5:00 pm, the smart security door remained closed. Ming Fei put on an apron and went to the kitchen to prepare dinner. An hour later, she washed her hands and emerged from the kitchen. Ming Zaozao was on the sofa, watching her favorite cartoon.

At 6:30 pm, the rain began to subside, a mist settling over the distant lake.

At 6:50 pm, as Ming Fei checked the time for the third time, tidying up the toys on the table and preparing to water the plants on the balcony, the doorbell, silent all day, suddenly rang.

    Ming Fei froze.

The anxiety that had finally receded now rushed back like a rising tide.

She walked to the entrance. Instead of checking the smart monitor as usual, she directly unlocked the door.

As the door slowly slid open, Ming Fei’s apprehension didn’t lessen. A gust of cold autumn air swept in, and she found herself once again gazing into those indifferent eyes.

    Black hair, blue eyes.

It was—Zhu Yiqiao, whom she had seen on the university’s public screen that morning and whom she’d been waiting for all afternoon.

  • Inferior A After Having a Baby with the Top Boss 6

    Chapter 6: Gland Abnormality

A light drizzle fell, painting the maple forest in vibrant hues. In the distance, Crane Ascent Lake was shrouded in mist, the fleeting raindrops leaving autumnal traces on the tempered glass windows, quickly wiped away by miniature robots.

In the spacious office, Ming Zaozao’s voice was crystal clear, pulling Zhu Yiqiao’s memory back to the afternoon of their first encounter.

When they had disabled all the security locks with their equipment and blocked all electronic signals, a small figure appeared at the entrance.

Despite having seen Ming Zaozao’s file and photos beforehand, the moment their eyes met, Chief Justice Zhu Yiqiao, usually unflappable and in control, was momentarily at a loss.

    “Who… who are you?”

Noticing the guns at their waists, Ming Zaozao seemed to understand and pulled out her own pink toy gun.

She approached them, the little buns on her head bobbing. “Aunties, are you police officers?”

Lan Lubai was the first to react. She removed her sidearm, crouched down to Ming Zaozao’s level, and explained in the gentlest voice possible, “Yes, we’re… something like police officers.”

Ming Zaozao accepted this without question. Her mother had told her that the security locks at home were very strong and would trap any bad guys trying to cause trouble. Only she, Mama, Aunt Wang, and Auntie Xingzi knew the password, and only the police could override the system.

Besides, Ming Zaozao thought she’d seen the auntie with blue eyes on the screen before. She seemed like an important auntie, honored by the monarch, possessing powerful magic, and who defeated bad guys.

“Wow, you’re so amazing!” Ming Zaozao exclaimed. “When Baby grows up, Baby also wants to be a police officer and protect Mama, protect puppies, kitties, lambs…”

She wanted to protect so many animals she could hardly count them all. “And protect everyone!”

“So impressive!” Lan Lubai patted her head. “Then, sweet girl, can you take us inside? We know your mother is still at school, so we’ll wait for her here.”

    “Okay!”

Zhu Yiqiao, observing this entire scene, remained silent. She walked behind them, expressionless, her cape swirling around her. Her first instinct was to conceal her weapon. It wasn’t until they were all seated in the living room, and Ming Zaozao tripped over a toy on the carpet, that her expression changed.

Min Man quickly scooped up Ming Zaozao and patted her knee. While Ming Zaozao toddled off to fetch them something, Zhu Yiqiao bent down and picked up the toy gun, carefully placing it on the table.

When Ming Zaozao returned, she shyly but happily thanked her.

    A while later—

Exhausted from playing with Min Man and Lan Lubai, Ming Zaozao was taken to her bedroom for a nap by Wei Lingyu.

Time slipped by with the sound of rain. Forty minutes later, when the smart security door opened again, Zhu Yiqiao saw, reflected in the balcony glass, the person who would throw her carefully ordered life into disarray.

    —Ming Fei.

    A completely unfamiliar name.

Someone who should have had no connection to her life whatsoever.

    “Auntie.”

Ming Zaozao’s voice pulled Zhu Yiqiao out of her memory.

Ming Zaozao on the screen was pleading again, saying she wanted to see her mother. The tremor in her voice grew more pronounced, as if tears were about to spill.

    “Baby really, really misses Mama.”

“Baby had a scary dream, dreamt that Mama was gone.”

Within seconds, the first crystal-clear teardrop rolled down Ming Zaozao’s perfectly round cheek, disappearing into the collar of her clothes, a precursor to many more.

Lan Lubai’s heart ached. “Sweetheart, don’t cry. Your Mama will be back soon.”

“Baby wants to see Mama now.”

Perhaps because the aloof and noble woman hadn’t responded, Ming Zaozao burst into tears, the tears she’d been holding back now streaming down her face. She pouted, wiping her eyes with her little hands, rubbing them until they were red.

Her muffled sobs echoed both in the car and Zhu Yiqiao’s office, like a small animal whimpering in distress after being bullied in the wilderness.

Just as Min Man couldn’t resist offering words of comfort, Zhu Yiqiao finally moved.

She strode to her desk, pulled out an execution order bearing the Court’s insignia from the drawer, swiftly signed it with a few strokes of the pen, and finally looked up at Ming Zaozao, her tear-streaked face filling the display.

“I’ll have them deliver this to you. With this, you can come in. No one will stop you.”

    She added softly, “Don’t cry.”

Ming Zaozao, who couldn’t read, peered at the document, her long eyelashes clumped together with tears, her eyes brimming. After confirming with Wei Lingyu beside her several times, Ming Zaozao finally broke into a smile.

Her smile was truly endearing, her dimples sweet, her words comforting.

    “Thank you, pretty Auntie.”

“You’re so nice!” she sniffled. “Baby won’t forget Auntie. Next time we meet, Baby will give Auntie a present.”

    Zhu Yiqiao: “Mm.”

Wei Lingyu seemed to want to say something, but Ming Zaozao’s little hand, waving excitedly at the screen, accidentally ended the video call.

Silence returned to the room. Lan Lubai and Min Man exchanged glances, silently urging each other to speak.

    “Ahem…”

Lan Lubai broke the silence first. “Boss, it’ll take at least an hour for Secretary Wei to get here with Zaozao. We only have seven hours left before the detention limit expires. If we can’t find any evidence against Ms. Ming within those seven hours, we have to release her.”

    “Understood.”

Min Man was the most perceptive of the three and the only one with connections within the Court.

She took off her uniform cap, revealing a scar on her forehead, her amber eyes giving her the look of an alert cheetah.

“The original victim list was broadcast internally during the meeting. Now everyone in the Court knows you’re on the list, and they’ll soon know you have a daughter. The Independent State mandates that in the first two years of the Chief Justice’s term, there are annual public opinion polls and internal performance reviews.”

“In these reviews, the Chief Justice’s family and personal life are important criteria.” Min Man paused. “Boss, congratulations on having a daughter. But this also means you now have a vulnerability. If this isn’t handled properly, it could create quite a stir in the year-end review.”

The electronic diffuser on the corner of the desk filled the room with the subtle scent of cedarwood.

Zhu Yiqiao offered no response, picking up her uniform jacket from the coat stand. “When Ming Yi arrives, bring her to my office first.”

    “Alright.”

This was the second day of Ming Fei’s detention. She sat quietly on the edge of the bed, awaiting her next interrogation.

The walls of the detention cell were white as snow, spotless.

Since being brought in the evening before last, Ming Fei hadn’t slept well. Now, her thoughts were even more jumbled. When she woke up this morning, she noticed a slight stinging sensation in her gland.

For an inferior alpha, this was highly unusual. Ever since her injury during differentiation, her gland had been completely unresponsive.

Why… Why would she suddenly feel this strange stinging sensation now?

    Ming Fei couldn’t understand it.

However, the faint stinging was fleeting. If she hadn’t distinctly felt it originating from her gland, she would have likely dismissed it.

The detention cell on the third floor was quiet, so quiet that she could hear the footsteps of the staff.

Ming Fei wondered if this meant another interrogation. Based on her calculations, she only had seven hours left until her release.

    Her suspicion was quickly confirmed.

The dark security door opened. An officer walked briskly towards her and escorted her to the interrogation room. Ming Fei cooperated fully, calm and composed, confident that even the most advanced interrogation techniques wouldn’t extract any confession from her.

Because she hadn’t done anything wrong, let alone anything illegal.

The interrogation room was much larger than the detention cell. Ming Fei sat obediently on the metal chair, shivering in the cold.

She was very susceptible to the cold, her hands and feet turning icy in autumn and winter. But Ming Zaozao was a little furnace, radiating warmth, often cuddling a plushie and asking to sleep with her, sprawling out and turning Ming Fei into a heat source as well.

These thoughts intensified her worry for her daughter.

Although Ming Zaozao was usually well-behaved and easy to manage, obedient and understanding during every separation, Ming Fei still felt anxious.

Because this time, they hadn’t had a chance to say goodbye, not even a single word.

    “Beep—”

The silence in the interrogation room was broken by the sound of the door opening.

Ming Fei looked up, surprised to see Zhu Yiqiao enter.

She understood the gravity of the gene theft case, but did this Chief Justice need to personally handle a relatively minor matter like an interrogation?

While she pondered this, Zhu Yiqiao sat down and asked her first question.

    “Name.”

    “Ming Fei.”

    “Age.”

    “25.”

After confirming these basic details that had been previously recorded, Zhu Yiqiao suddenly changed her line of questioning.

“Your records indicate that you lived in a remote border region until the age of seventeen without legal citizenship. Then, at seventeen, you came to Xi He City alone to work and gained admission to Q University through independent enrollment.”

Zhu Yiqiao’s voice was cold. “Now, please recount your life before the age of seventeen.”

Ming Fei was prepared for this question. Or rather, ever since she transmigrated to this world and realized she couldn’t go back, she’d crafted a detailed backstory for herself.

Much of it was based on her real experiences.

“You may not believe me, but I’ve been an orphan since I was a child and have endured hardships you can’t imagine…” She recounted her fabricated past. “After leaving that place, I used the little money I had left to buy a ticket to Xi He City, worked part-time while studying, and only obtained legal citizenship before the entrance exam.”

Zhu Yiqiao was clearly not easily fooled. “Taoqiu Village? That sounds like a made-up name.”

“It’s not made up.” Ming Fei explained, “Taoqiu Village is located in a remote border area. It has a small population, and even locals are barely aware of its existence. It’s not even marked on the official Yi Meng Independent State map.”

If any of the previous interrogators were present, Ming Fei wouldn’t be nervous. But the fact that it was Zhu Yiqiao conducting this final interrogation made her tense, despite having rehearsed this story countless times.

“You claim you’ve been an orphan since childhood. Have you never searched for your biological mother?” Zhu Yiqiao’s tone was measured. “If no one can corroborate your story, I have every reason to believe you’re fabricating it.”

“Fabricating a false identity to garner sympathy and then using that identity to engage in gene theft.”

Ming Fei was indeed apprehensive about the lack of witnesses and Zhu Yiqiao’s sharp mind, but she maintained her composure.

“Chief Justice Zhu,” she said, biting her lip, “if you’re going to use my orphan status and my difficult upbringing to attack and question me, then allow me to raise similar doubts about you.”

“As far as I know, your official online profile reveals very little about your life before the age of twenty.”

She had no interest in the lives of these powerful politicians. But due to the recent gene theft scandal, Zhu Yiqiao’s name had become increasingly prominent in her life. A few nights ago, when the media bombarded her with related news, she’d visited the public network to look up Zhu Yiqiao’s profile.

Perhaps for protection, or some other reason, the information about Zhu Yiqiao’s life before twenty was scarce. Compared to the detailed profiles of other Court officials, the Chief Justice seemed to have appeared out of nowhere.

Realizing she had overstepped, Ming Fei quickly added, “I apologize, it wasn’t my intention to question you, nor to attack you with this. I just want to defend myself.”

Zhu Yiqiao looked at her, a hint of scrutiny in her eyes.

“You received a perfect score in the cultivation center’s assessment. How long did you prepare for that?”

The cultivation center’s assessment for matching candidates was rigorous, involving a comprehensive background check, personality evaluation, assessment of living conditions, and more. Candidates were also required to master all skills related to infant and child care and pass an exam based on thirteen professional parenting books.

Failure in any area meant disqualification from gene matching.

Ming Fei, unsure why she was being asked this, answered truthfully, “About three months.”

Zhu Yiqiao abruptly shifted gears. “What kind of tanks are the goldfish in Jing’an Gold Shop kept in?”

Ming Fei froze. “What… what tanks?”

“—What comes after ‘When people are still, then there is peace’?”

Ming Fei instinctively replied, “When things are still, then there is order; when the heart is still, then there is victory.”

“Where in the basement is the Saint-Fioraltar statue displayed?”

    Ming Fei looked utterly bewildered.

Observing the interrogation through the one-way mirror, Lan Lubai commented, “Her reaction doesn’t seem fake. If she really had other connections to Jing’an Gold Shop, she would know these things.”

Min Man nodded. “Or she’s an incredibly good liar.”

“Oh, the little one should be arriving soon. Let’s go pick her up.”

    “Let’s go.”

Meanwhile, Ming Fei, completely flustered by the questions, suddenly felt another stinging sensation in her gland, coming and going, like an ant bite. And like before, it was fleeting, lasting less than thirty seconds.

Her expression didn’t change, but her knuckles turned white, her worry about this sensation overriding her fear of Zhu Yiqiao.

Fortunately, Zhu Yiqiao didn’t continue the interrogation.

She stood up, looking down at Ming Fei, her deep blue eyes like a vast ocean, easily drawing one in.

    “—This interrogation is concluded.”

    Half an hour later.

When the security door of the detention cell opened again, Ming Fei felt lightheaded and slightly feverish, suspecting she might be coming down with a cold.

Just as she was about to ask for assistance, the officer who had been patrolling the third floor unlocked her handcuffs and gave her a kind smile.

    “You’re free to go.”

    Ming Fei was stunned.

Delayed joy surged through her. She politely thanked the officer.

Following the officer, she took the elevator down and exited the building. Reaching the flowerbed outside, she took a deep breath of fresh air and heard a voice calling out.

    “—Mama! Mama!”

Ming Fei turned and saw Ming Zaozao and Li Xing running towards her. Ming Zaozao, in her pale yellow penguin outfit, her round face beaming, rushed into her arms, her voice choked with emotion.

    “Mama, Baby missed you.”

“Zaozao.” Ming Fei held her tightly. “Mama missed you too.”

Ming Zaozao looked up at her. “Baby missed you super much.”

“Alright, Zaozao missed Mama super-duper much.” Ming Fei smiled tenderly. “What are you doing here, Zaozao?”

“The aunties brought Baby here, Baby came to find Mama.”

Ming Fei looked over and saw the two executive officers, the Secretary-General, and the enigmatic Chief Justice standing beneath a golden ginkgo tree.

She figured she might interact with Secretary-General Wei Lingyu again, but she likely wouldn’t cross paths with the other three.

To express her gratitude for being released and her respect for the Court’s work, Ming Fei handed Ming Zaozao to Li Xing and walked towards the four figures.

The drizzle had stopped long ago, and ginkgo leaves carpeted the ground.

Ming Fei, not naturally sociable, had learned some polite formalities over the years at her job. She mentally rehearsed what she wanted to say and then thanked the four officials with a smile. Just as she was about to leave, the imposing Chief Justice suddenly called her name.

    “—Ming Fei.”

When Ming Fei turned around, the other three were walking away. She and Zhu Yiqiao were now alone under the ginkgo tree.

“Chief Justice Zhu, is there something else?”

The autumn wind rustled, billowing Zhu Yiqiao’s cape. Her tone was cryptic.

“Starting Friday, I’ll be moving into Huifu Gardens.”

Ming Fei didn’t think much of it, assuming Zhu Yiqiao was simply relocating.

    “Congratulations, Chief Justice Zhu.”

“I’ll need a clean and tidy bedroom, and a study.”

A question mark slowly formed above Ming Fei’s head. She was certainly intimidated by, even afraid of, Zhu Yiqiao. But faced with such a straightforward yet strange request, she couldn’t help but ask, “Chief Justice Zhu, are you telling me this because you need my help with something?”

Zhu Yiqiao explained slowly, “You do meet the conditions for release, but until this matter is fully resolved, the Court will continue to monitor your activities. And I need to ensure the safety of my daughter.”

Ming Fei understood the first part, but the last sentence left her completely baffled. She clearly remembered that the young Chief Justice’s official profile stated that she was unmarried and had no children.

    She asked, “Your daughter?”

Zhu Yiqiao’s lips parted slightly. “Ming Yi.”
