    Chapter 25: Threefold Fire

Yue Ya’er tilted her head, her hands clasped on the round rosewood table. “Not so simple?”

Shi Hao said solemnly, “The Six Gates are motivated by wealth, power, and fame. Committing such acts won’t earn them a good reputation. And if this matter is exposed, the court will have to intervene, at least superficially.

“So, their primary motive must be financial gain. But what kind of profit could entice the Six Gates to participate directly in such a thing?”

    The three women exchanged glances.

Yue Ya’er nodded, “Knowing their style, it’s certainly possible they would turn a blind eye to such things in exchange for money.

“But to actively participate, sending men to assist those child abductors and eliminate threats, that requires a hefty price.”

Shi Hao said, “More importantly, those children were being taken northwest. If they were being sent to the prosperous cities in the south, it would be understandable. But what’s in the northwest?”

County Mistress Li Tong also said, puzzled, “That’s right. Northwest of Jin Prefecture is practically the Gobi Desert.”

Yue Ya’er scratched her head, “This is troublesome. I came here to supervise the investigation. I never imagined the Six Gates would be involved in such a thing. I thought they were just being lazy and negligent, so I came to put some pressure on them, to make them do their job.

“I didn’t expect them to stoop so low. Without the Six Gates’ cooperation, I don’t have anyone trustworthy in Jin Prefecture. Even if I mobilize troops from the prefectural government, I don’t think it’s safe.”

County Mistress Li Tong said, “The prefectural guards are independent and have always been separate from the Six Gates, but…”

Shi Hao shook his head, “Having those guards investigate a case like this in the martial world would just make them pawns of the Six Gates.

“If possible, I hope Miss Yue can pretend to be unaware of the situation for now and continue to supervise the Six Gates’ investigation openly, but don’t take any other action. I’m a Jin Prefecture native and have some connections here. I can investigate secretly, and when necessary, I’ll ask you to mobilize troops for a decisive strike.”

Yue Ya’er readily agreed, “Alright, let’s do it that way!”

Du Yuejiao turned to County Mistress Li Tong, “Junior Sister, have you found out who attacked you on Red Mountain?”

County Mistress Li Tong shook her head, “Those people are quite secretive. We still don’t know their exact background. But my father said yesterday that attacks against the court and the royal family are becoming more frequent in various provinces. It seems there’s a secret organization uniting the scattered resistance forces. If this continues, things will become increasingly chaotic.”

She looked at Shi Hao, “Fortunately, we had Young Master Shi to save us last time…”

Du Yuejiao suddenly said, “Let’s not dwell on the past. Come, come, let’s have some tea.”

County Mistress Li Tong, mid-sentence, choked slightly.

Yue Ya’er, seeing Du Yuejiao’s suddenly serious expression, chuckled.

After a while, realizing that the city gates would soon close, County Mistress Li Tong and Yue Ya’er excused themselves.

Shi Hao and Du Yuejiao escorted them outside. A luxurious carriage awaited them, with a cavalry escort and eighteen Yingzhao beasts – mythical creatures with the head of a bird and the body of a horse, a rare sight.

County Mistress Li Tong and Yue Ya’er boarded the carriage. The Thunderclap Eighteen Riders mounted their Yingzhao beasts and flew into the air, escorting them.

After they left, Shi Hao and Du Yuejiao chatted for a while before returning to their respective residences.

That night, Shi Hao continued his cultivation.

After days of practice, both his Mysterious Charm Technique and Immortal Ice Technique had steadily improved.

He was even confident he could master both techniques before the next full moon.

This meant he had to quickly formulate a plan for obtaining the ingredients for the seventh-rank Immortal Formula and the one hundred living souls required for the demonic ritual. Ideally, he would advance to the seventh rank before the next full moon.

Obtaining the three main ingredients for the seventh-rank Immortal Formula was now much easier since he had connections to the Chongxian Sect.

But the one hundred living souls were a different matter. A living soul was a soul that hadn’t dissipated within an hour of death.

This meant he had to kill one hundred people.

Although this era showed signs of impending chaos, with more and more refugees arriving from the central plains, he couldn’t bring himself to harm innocent people.

The next morning, after helping Daoist Lan Ke with some chores, he had lunch with Du Yuejiao at her Wei Xiang Pavilion.

Although the monastery had a dining hall, it was natural for direct disciples like Du Yuejiao to have their own kitchens.

After lunch, Shi Hao found an excuse to ask Du Yuejiao to show him around Ming Kun Monastery.

Du Yuejiao agreed and led him around, explaining the various buildings and their functions.

They arrived at a hall with closed doors and windows, heavily guarded. It was quite far from the main hall, in a secluded area.

Shi Hao asked, “What is that place?”

Du Yuejiao whispered, “That’s the Golden Crucible Hall. My uncle often has unconventional ideas and conducts his experiments there. Many unique Daoist alchemy and crafting techniques were developed there.”

Shi Hao said, “I see. No wonder it’s so heavily guarded.”

Du Yuejiao shook her head, “That’s not the reason. My uncle used to work there undisturbed. But a recent experiment is too important, so the entire hall has been sealed off, waiting for officials from the sect and the court to take over.”

Shi Hao said, “I see.” He didn’t press further, worried about arousing Du Yuejiao’s suspicion. They turned and left.

But he knew he was one step closer to the information he sought.

In the afternoon, Du Yuejiao went to her lessons, and Shi Hao left Ming Kun Monastery, heading into the city alone.

After wandering around, making sure he wasn’t being followed, he changed his appearance using the Evil Shadow Disguise Technique and went to the secluded courtyard to meet with Old Qiu and Lu Tong.

After they were seated, Lu Tong asked, “Brother Hao, any clues about the God-Sealing Experiment?”

Shi Hao shook his head, “Not yet, but I’ve made some progress. Give me some more time, and I should have something.

“But I can confirm that your previous intel was accurate. Ming Kun Monastery and the Yue Ke Tai clan are indeed conducting some kind of experiment.

“It seems that in the beginning, due to Abbot Song Cui’s selfishness, the experiment wasn’t reported to the Chongxian Sect or the court. Now, they can’t hide it any longer, and the matter has escalated. The one conducting the experiment seems to be Daoist Lan Ke, one of the Twelve Perfected Ones, and the location is the Golden Crucible Hall behind Ming Kun Monastery.

“The entire hall is currently sealed off, waiting for the Chongxian Sect elders and the court to take over.”

Old Qiu said, “According to our investigation, although Daoist Lan Ke is one of the Twelve Perfected Ones, he is dedicated to crafting and alchemy, immersed in his research, and often has unconventional ideas. With his status, he should at least be the abbot of a branch monastery, or even higher, but because he avoids worldly affairs, he was assigned to this remote place and became an idle Daoist.

“If it’s him, it’s not surprising that he developed this ‘God-Sealing Experiment’ that could potentially impact the entire martial world.”

Shi Hao said impassively, “Give me some more time on this matter. But there’s another important issue I need your help with.”

Old Qiu said, “Just tell us, Righteous Hao. We’ll do our best to help.”

Shi Hao revealed some of the truth behind the child abduction case, but he was vague about how he obtained the information, not wanting Dark Thunder to suspect his true identity.

Even though these people were righteous martial artists who opposed the barbarian court, he still didn’t want to expose himself to them. Caution was always necessary.

Lu Tong said angrily, “Those Six Gates barbarian lapdogs, those treacherous villains! I knew they were no good, but I didn’t expect them to be this vile.”

Old Qiu said, “So, the local Six Gates are definitely involved in the child abductions. But they’re probably not the ones actually abducting the children. Besides the Six Gates, there must be other gangs involved.

“But the Six Gates aren’t just turning a blind eye in exchange for money, as they usually do. They’re actively participating. The profit behind this must be enormous, too tempting for those Six Gates villains to refuse. Or perhaps… other powerful families and officials are also involved?”

Shi Hao said, “I need to know which gang is cooperating with the Six Gates.”

Old Qiu nodded, “Rest assured, Righteous Hao. We’ve been investigating this matter, but we haven’t found many clues. We were already puzzled. Cases like this are usually handled by small-time gangs. Our informants should have been able to find something.

“We didn’t expect the Six Gates to be covering up the evidence. Now that we know they’re involved, and we know the children are being taken northwest, we should be able to unravel this mystery and find the gang behind it.”

Shi Hao said solemnly, “It would be best if we could rescue those children.”

Lu Tong looked at the young man with the slightly hooked nose and whispered, “You’re truly righteous and courageous, Brother Hao. Don’t worry, we’ll do our best.”

After bidding them farewell, Shi Hao changed back to his original appearance and returned to the monastery.

He was now officially considered Daoist Lan Ke’s disciple. Daoist Lan Ke was one of the Twelve Perfected Ones of the Chongxian Sect. Although he wasn’t the abbot of Ming Kun Monastery, even the abbot addressed him as Senior Brother.

The abbot had registered him and reported it to the sect. This meant he was now considered a direct disciple, like Du Yuejiao. The gatekeepers, mostly outer disciples who performed chores while practicing martial arts, didn’t question his comings and goings.

He continued learning from Daoist Lan Ke for two days. That afternoon, following Daoist Lan Ke’s instructions, he tried refining the simplest type of elixir, the Clarity Heart Pill, in an empty alchemy room.

The Clarity Heart Pill was an entry-level elixir that calmed the mind and neutralized some simple toxins.

For someone with an eighth-rank foundation and orthodox Daoist internal energy cultivation like Shi Hao, its effects were minimal, but it was often given to outer disciples who traveled outside the monastery.

Daoist alchemy wasn’t as simple as brewing medicine in an apothecary. It involved the use of true energy and divine sense, and the process itself was a form of internal energy cultivation.

Shi Hao sat before the alchemy furnace, flames roaring within.

He focused his divine sense into the furnace, observing the herbs and adjusting the flames with his true energy.

The first step in Daoist alchemy was mastering the Threefold Fire.

The Threefold Fire was achieved by perfectly harmonizing one’s body, mind, and spirit, drawing upon the hidden power within one’s soul and refining essence into energy.

Although called “fire,” it wasn’t actually fire, but a scorching aura that could ignite charcoal.

The ability to unleash flames from one’s palm to subdue demons and monsters was called “Threefold True Fire,” a technique Shi Hao hadn’t mastered yet.

And it seemed no one else possessed it either. It was likely a mythical ability from legends, used to deify Daoist cultivators.

The scorching aura ignited the charcoal at the bottom of the furnace, while true energy enveloped the herbs, refining their essence and adjusting the heat until all impurities were removed and the essence condensed into an elixir. This was Daoist alchemy.

However, being his first attempt, Shi Hao struggled to protect the herbs while controlling the heat. He saw the medicinal essence dissipating; at this rate, the herbs would be reduced to ashes.

Although Ming Kun Monastery had plenty of herbs for disciples to practice alchemy, he was still unwilling to waste them.

An idea came to him. He circulated both the Immortal Ice Technique and the Mysterious Charm Technique simultaneously within his body.

Using the Daoist method for controlling the Threefold Fire, he channeled the Mysterious Charm Technique, generating demonic fire, while using the true energy from the Immortal Ice Technique to protect the herbs.

The demonic fire, passing through the barrier created by the icy true energy, roasted and refined the herbs.

Normally, demonic fire couldn’t be used in Daoist alchemy.

The demonic sects also had their own elixirs, but they were created by obtaining demonic essence from the Demonic Realm through rituals and then refining it. Demonic fire, cultivated through demonic arts, couldn’t replicate the Daoist method of refining natural herbs into elixirs with the Threefold Fire.

This was because demonic energy represented “chaos” and couldn’t achieve the purity of Daoist true energy.

However, perhaps because he was the only dual cultivator of Daoist and demonic arts in history, Shi Hao was able to use the pure Daoist true energy to regulate and filter the unruly demonic fire, creating a unique, harmonized flame that replaced both the Threefold Fire and the charcoal fire.

Under his control, the dissipating medicinal essence recondensed, forming a perfect sphere.

The essence of the herbs rapidly solidified into an elixir, brimming with medicinal power, spinning within the unique flame…

Chapter 24: This Case Isn’t Simple

Shi Hao said, “I ran into that Yuan Jia last night. Since he’s from the Six Gates, he naturally has ways of finding out my identity based on my appearance.

“More importantly, they don’t know how much I know. They think that since I was able to track them to that location, I must be aware of their activities, so they’re trying to preemptively strike, making false accusations to protect themselves.”

Du Yuejiao said angrily, “Those despicable villains!”

Daoist Lan Ke stroked his beard, “That’s how the Six Gates operates. They have power and are used to abusing it. False accusations and framing innocent people are their specialties. It’s usually quite effective.”

Du Yuejiao said, worried, “If they can’t attack openly, they’ll resort to other methods.”

She looked at Daoist Lan Ke, “Uncle, why don’t you let Brother Shi stay at Ming Kun Monastery? Those Six Gates thugs wouldn’t dare cause trouble there.”

Daoist Lan Ke smiled, “It’s rare to see you so concerned about someone. Since I’ve already claimed him as my disciple, there’s no problem with him staying at the monastery.”

    Shi Hao feigned hesitation, “Well…”

The best way to uncover the truth behind the “God-Sealing” experiment was to infiltrate Ming Kun Monastery.

As the saying went, “How can one enter the tiger’s lair and not capture its cub?” In that sense, the Six Gates’ actions had actually helped him.

But he had to pretend to be hesitant.

Du Yuejiao tugged at his sleeve and whispered, “Brother Shi, please listen to me. Stay at Ming Kun Monastery. Those people won’t dare touch you there.”

Shi Hao pretended to consider it, then nodded, “Alright, but I need to go to the Yuan Rong Merchant Guild and also retrieve some things from my residence.”

Du Yuejiao said cheerfully, “I’ll go with you.”

Daoist Lan Ke smiled, “Then I’ll leave you two alone. I’ll return to the monastery.” He flicked his whisk and left.

As they walked, Shi Hao said, “Thank you for your help at the courthouse, Miss Du… Yuejiao. But I’m worried about damaging your reputation. I’m truly sorry for any trouble this might cause you.”

Du Yuejiao lowered her head and whispered, “If it weren’t for you, Brother Shi, I would be dead. Reputation means nothing. You’re a righteous man. I was the one who acted rashly, causing this misunderstanding, damaging your reputation.”

Shi Hao smiled, “I’m a man. What do I have to lose? It’s you I’m worried about.”

They reached the Yuan Rong Merchant Guild’s headquarters. Deng Liang greeted them, “Brother Hao, I’m glad you’re alright.”

Shi Hao smiled, “You were the one who alerted the local merchants and gentry, weren’t you? That’s why there were so many people at the courthouse.”

Deng Liang grinned, “I was worried those Six Gates thugs might try something, so I spread the news.”

He pulled Shi Hao aside, glanced at Du Yuejiao, and chuckled, “You’re quite the charmer, Brother Hao. Even her… you’re amazing!”

Shi Hao, seeing his friend’s suggestive wink, remembered his earlier comments about Du Yuejiao:

—”Although she’s beautiful, she’s incredibly arrogant, like a celestial being, her words as sharp as needles.”

—”In my opinion, whoever marries that girl must have committed terrible sins in a past life.”

He shook his head, amused, and, pulling Deng Liang along, went to Du Yuejiao, “Yuejiao, this is my good friend, Deng Liang. He’s the young guild master here, and also the young master of the Jin Jin Yin Xiu Silk Emporium. They produce the finest silk in Jin Prefecture. You must have met before.”

Du Yuejiao, her hands clasped before her, curtsied gracefully, “Greetings, Brother Deng.”

Deng Liang, flustered by her unexpected politeness, stammered, “Greetings, Sister-in-Law! Greetings!”

Du Yuejiao blushed but said nothing.

After chatting with Deng Liang for a while, they left. Deng Liang escorted them to the entrance, where Du Yuejiao, surprisingly, curtsied again before leaving with Shi Hao. He couldn’t help but exclaim, “Amazing, Brother Hao! You’ve tamed even that shrew.”

Shi Hao returned to his residence to gather his belongings, then hired a carriage and went to Ming Kun Monastery with Du Yuejiao.

Inside the monastery, Du Yuejiao led him to a secluded courtyard filled with medicinal herbs, alchemy rooms, and the faint scent of incense.

In the distance stood a large, cylindrical, bronze hall with an octagonal roof, the sounds of clanging metal echoing from within.

Du Yuejiao said, “My uncle is one of the Chongxian Sect’s Twelve Perfected Ones. He’s a master craftsman and alchemist. Most of the divine crystals obtained by our temples are sent here for him to forge into magical weapons. And he also refines many elixirs and medicines.”

They entered an alchemy room, where Daoist Lan Ke was busy sorting and preparing herbs, carefully placing them into a steaming cauldron.

The heat emanating from the cauldron was intense, even Shi Hao and Du Yuejiao, standing by the entrance, felt uncomfortable. Daoist Lan Ke, however, seemed oblivious, working diligently amidst the steam.

Du Yuejiao called out, “Uncle! Brother Shi is here.”

Daoist Lan Ke, without turning around, said, “Good, good. Have him find an empty room in the courtyard.”

Du Yuejiao led Shi Hao away, “That’s how he is. He doesn’t usually handle the monastery’s affairs. He spends all his time on crafting, alchemy, and his… experiments.

“I heard he could have been promoted to a higher position within the sect, but he didn’t get along with the others, so he requested a transfer to this branch.”

She led Shi Hao to an empty room, explained the monastery’s meal times, and then left.

Shi Hao cleaned the dusty room, clearly unoccupied for a long time, lay down on the hard wooden bed, and began cultivating.

He heard steady footsteps outside, and then a man’s voice, “Senior Brother!”

Daoist Lan Ke’s voice followed, “Junior Brother Song Cui, what brings you here in such a hurry?”

The man said, “I heard you took on an outer disciple without authorization and are letting him stay at Ming Kun Monastery.”

Daoist Lan Ke said, “That’s right.”

The man said, his tone laced with displeasure, “Senior Brother, accepting a disciple and teaching him our techniques without informing the sect is forbidden. And I’m the abbot here. You didn’t even consult me.”

Daoist Lan Ke chuckled, “I just happened to find a cultivation manual and a sword technique. I saw this young man, noticed his talent, and gave them to him. If you have a problem with him staying here, Junior Brother, I’ll take him and leave. I won’t be back for a few years.”

The man hesitated, then said angrily, “What do you mean? You can’t just leave now, with everything that’s happening…”

Daoist Lan Ke said, “You call this a mess? I’m just a researcher. You were the one who wanted to take all the credit and didn’t report the God-Sealing Stones to the sect. And you were the one who let that thief steal the information. I didn’t say anything. I’m willing to share the blame.

“And now you’re giving me trouble for taking on a disciple and letting him stay here for a few days? Really, Junior Brother… I mean, Abbot?”

The man paused, his voice now subdued, “Since he’s your disciple, Senior Brother, I won’t interfere. But as the abbot, I have a duty to inquire about new disciples, especially those brought here without prior notice.

“Since he’s your disciple, I’ll register him and report it to the sect.”

Daoist Lan Ke said, “Good! Good! Thank you, Abbot.”

    The footsteps faded away.

Shi Hao got up and went outside. Daoist Lan Ke was sorting herbs, tossing them in a large winnowing basket.

Shi Hao said, “I apologize for the trouble, Senior.”

Daoist Lan Ke chuckled, “It’s no trouble at all. That Yuejiao girl, she’s always been so proud and aloof. I was worried she wouldn’t be able to survive in the jianghu. Having you look after her puts my mind at ease. You’re the one I should be thanking.”

Shi Hao said, “You’re too kind, Senior. I heard you’re a master craftsman and alchemist. Would you be willing to teach me?”

Daoist Lan Ke put down the basket, stroked his beard, and smiled, “I would be delighted to. Come, come, let’s start with the basics.” He handed Shi Hao the basket, showed him how to sort the herbs, and then went back to his work.

Shi Hao felt like he had become an unpaid laborer.

Of course, learning alchemy was beneficial.

Although the Holy Jade Immortal had given him the recipe for the seventh-rank elixir, without alchemy skills, he would have to rely on others, which could be troublesome.

He spent the afternoon assisting Daoist Lan Ke, asking questions, which the old Daoist, despite his constant demands and instructions, answered patiently and thoroughly.

As evening approached, a young acolyte arrived, “Are you Brother Shi Hao? We have a guest. Please come to the Wei Xiang Pavilion.”

    A guest? Shi Hao wondered.

After asking for directions, he went to the Wei Xiang Pavilion.

That morning, most of the Daoists had been attending their morning lessons, so the monastery had seemed relatively empty. Now, however, many people were coming and going.

The Chongxian Sect, claiming to be the orthodox leader of the Daoist sects, even this branch temple was grand and opulent, its grounds extensive, filled with pavilions and courtyards.

In a large training ground, young men in light green tunics practiced swordsmanship under the guidance of a Daoist priest. These disciples, trained en masse, weren’t direct disciples of the Perfected Ones or Recluses, their status far lower than inner disciples like Du Yuejiao.

They weren’t taught the orthodox Daoist internal energy cultivation techniques but other martial arts collected by the Chongxian Sect. Most would only reach the ninth rank, perhaps a few the eighth, if they were lucky.

However, a large number of ninth-rank martial artists, although not considered elite, still formed a considerable force, the foundation of the Chongxian Sect’s power.

And for many children from poor families, even becoming a small part of this foundation was a significant step up in life.

He reached the Wei Xiang Pavilion, a beautiful and elegant building surrounded by flowers and trees, its entrance flanked by incense burners. The sound of girls’ voices came from within.

“Brother Shi, you’re here,” Du Yuejiao greeted him, “Please come in.”

Shi Hao entered and saw not only Du Yuejiao but also Yue Ya’er and County Mistress Li Tong.

Yue Ya’er, wearing a flower garland and a colorful dress, looked like a flower herself. The smallest of the three, her attire made her appear even more youthful and charming.

County Mistress Li Tong, in a more subdued green and red dress with a butterfly pattern, seemed quieter and more reserved.

Du Yuejiao wore her usual Daoist robe, but this one was a light green, embroidered with the yin-yang symbol of the Daoist sects, along with pink flower petals and cloud patterns.

The robe, although brightly colored, still had an ethereal, otherworldly quality.

“Brother Shi, please have a seat,” Du Yuejiao said softly, gesturing towards a chair.

Li Tong and Yue Ya’er looked at Du Yuejiao, their expressions a mixture of surprise and confusion, as if they didn’t recognize her.

Shi Hao wondered what their impression of Du Yuejiao had been before.

He sat down, and Du Yuejiao, looking at him, said, “Sister Yue Ya’er heard about the incident this morning and came to find out what happened. I’ve already told her everything.”

Yue Ya’er, hands on her hips, said, her voice filled with indignation, “So, the Six Gates are involved in this child trafficking ring? No wonder they couldn’t find anything. If I hadn’t come here, I would have been wasting my time in Jin Prefecture.”

County Mistress Li Tong said softly, “Wasting your time would be the best-case scenario. More likely, they would have just arrested some random people, forced a confession, and closed the case.

“Although I’m familiar with the Six Gates’ corruption and incompetence, I still can’t believe they would be directly involved in something like this.”

Shi Hao shook his head, “This case isn’t that simple.”

  • I, The Man Who’ll Conquer Both the Immortal Venerable and the Demon Empress 23

Chapter 23: The Twelve Perfected Ones

“Your Honor!” The short, thin man stepped forward, raising his hands and presenting a badge. “I am Yuan Jia, a field agent of the Six Gates, specializing in undercover work, reconnaissance, and gathering intelligence among the lower classes.

“Recently, I was ordered to investigate the abduction and trafficking of children. I tracked those villains for several nights, finally locating one of their bases on Mount Fused Serpent in the northwest. Last night, while investigating further, I was discovered by their leader, who attempted to silence me.

“Fortunately, I possess some supernatural abilities. Although injured, I managed to escape with my life.”

Qiu Jiangping said, “Yuan Jia, look around the courtroom. Is the villain who tried to kill you here?”

Yuan Jia pointed at Shi Hao, “Your Honor, that’s him.”

An uproar erupted from the crowd at the entrance.

Qiu Jiangping said, “Yuan Jia, show everyone your wound.”

Yuan Jia ripped open his collar, revealing a sword wound on his shoulder.

Qiu Jiangping bowed towards the magistrate, “Your Honor, I’ve investigated. The wound on Yuan Jia’s shoulder matches the sword energy used by Shi Hao on Red Mountain, and it also matches the wounds on the bodies of our colleagues killed on Disordered Chess Mountain. Your Honor…”

He turned and pointed at Shi Hao, “This man is the murderer from Disordered Chess Mountain, and he is also the mastermind behind the recent case of child abduction and trafficking.”

He bowed again, “Your Honor, this is a major case, and the capital is also paying attention. Now that we have both witnesses and physical evidence, please pass judgment.”

Shi Yujun was aware of the importance of this case. Even Yue Ya’er, the daughter of the Yue Ke Tai family, had personally come to supervise the investigation with the Thunderclap Eighteen Riders. This case couldn’t be delayed; a swift resolution was needed!

He slammed the gavel and looked at the shackled Shi Hao, “Shi Hao, where were you last night?”

Shi Hao said slowly, “I was alone, camping in the mountains.”

Shi Yujun asked, “Can anyone testify for you?”

Shi Hao slowly shook his head.

Shi Yujun demanded, “Was the sword wound on Yuan Jia’s shoulder inflicted by you?”

Shi Hao’s expression remained unchanged. He shook his head, “No.”

Qiu Jiangping sneered, “Denial is useless. Yuan Jia saw you clearly last night.”

Shi Hao’s expression remained impassive, “He mistook me for someone else.”

Yuan Jia didn’t get angry but laughed instead, “I mistook you? You claim I mistook you?” He addressed the magistrate, “Your Honor, this man is a heinous criminal. He must not be spared.”

Qiu Jiangping also bowed towards the magistrate, “Your Honor, this Shi Hao secretly cultivated martial arts, but his background is unknown. Even if he practices Daoist internal energy cultivation, he is still unorthodox. I’ve sent people to investigate Small Han Mountain City. No one there knew he practiced martial arts.

“If he didn’t have ulterior motives and wasn’t plotting something illegal, why would he hide his martial arts training from everyone? Such unorthodox practices…”

Suddenly, a loud laugh came from outside, “Who says he’s unorthodox?”

The crowd at the entrance turned and parted. The laughter, loud and powerful, filled the courtroom, impossible to ignore.

An old Daoist priest entered. He wore a disheveled blue robe and a crooked Daoist cap, his horsetail whisk hanging loosely. He looked rather unkempt.

However, his laughter alone demonstrated his considerable strength.

Everyone in the courtroom, including Shi Hao, felt the laughter reverberate through them, deafeningly loud.

Qiu Jiangping clearly recognized the newcomer. His face darkened, but he also looked puzzled, probably wondering why this person was interfering.

The old Daoist entered the courtroom, flicked his whisk, and bowed to Shi Yujun, “Greetings, Your Honor. I am Daoist Lan Ke of Ming Kun Monastery.”

Shi Yujun, a civil official and not a martial artist, turned to his clerk.

The clerk quickly approached and whispered, “My lord, this is Perfected Lan Ke, one of the Twelve Perfected Ones of the Chongxian Sect and the senior brother of Ming Kun Monastery’s abbot.”

Shi Yujun suddenly understood. He nodded slightly and said to the old Daoist, “There’s no need for formalities, Perfected One. May I ask what brings you here?”

The old Daoist pointed at the shackled Shi Hao and smiled, “Constable Qiu claims his background is unknown and that he is unorthodox. I’ve come to clarify. Shi Hao’s martial arts were taught by me. In other words, he is an outer disciple of our Chongxian Sect.”

Another uproar came from the crowd at the entrance. Qiu Jiangping hurriedly stepped forward, “Perfected One! If he is an outer disciple of the Chongxian Sect, why didn’t Recluse Zhuo recognize him at the Marquis’ residence? Even in terms of martial arts, she only recognized his Daoist internal energy but couldn’t identify his sect.”

Daoist Lan Ke flicked his whisk again and smiled, “Is this the first time you’ve met me, Chief Constable Qiu? I do things as I please. Last year, in the mountains, I encountered this young man. I saw his talent and his respectful demeanor towards me, so on a whim, I taught him internal energy cultivation, gave him a profound external elixir, and established his martial arts foundation.

“As for his martial arts techniques, heh, our Chongxian Sect is the leader of all Daoist sects. We have countless techniques, and Junior Sister Zhuo can’t possibly know them all. I gave him a rare and unique sword manual, a secret technique of mine. It’s not surprising that Junior Sister Zhuo didn’t recognize it.”

    Qiu Jiangping stammered, “But…”

He couldn’t understand. Shi Hao, whose background had no connection to the Chongxian Sect, had suddenly become their outer disciple?

He gritted his teeth and said coldly, “Even if he is your disciple, Perfected One, he has committed a serious crime. Is the Chongxian Sect going to protect him?”

Daoist Lan Ke said, “If he truly committed this crime, I naturally wouldn’t condone or protect him. But if someone is trying to frame my disciple, I won’t let them get away with it.”

Qiu Jiangping said, “We have both physical evidence and witnesses…”

Daoist Lan Ke said, “The so-called physical evidence is the coroner’s report? You claim that those who died on Disordered Chess Mountain were killed by sword-like finger strikes with a freezing aura. Heh, take me to see the bodies. I can tell whether it’s true or not with a single glance.”

Qiu Jiangping’s expression remained unchanged, “The bodies were cremated several days ago.”

The crowd at the entrance erupted in commotion. Daoist Lan Ke sneered, “Cremated? Since when do we have such a custom in West Shu?”

Qiu Jiangping said, “Most of those men weren’t from this prefecture. After their deaths, we had to send their remains back to their hometowns. Cremating them and placing their ashes in urns made it easier to transport them.”

Daoist Lan Ke sneered, “Transporting corpses over long distances isn’t a new practice. The Corpse Walker Sect and the Witchcraft Cult both offer such services. A person’s body is a gift from their parents. How can you cremate them without the consent of their families? Is this the way the Six Gates operates? Or are you afraid of someone examining the bodies?”

The crowd outside grew louder, and even Shi Yujun glanced at Qiu Jiangping, frowning.

It wasn’t that they didn’t trust the Six Gates, but the Six Gates’ habit of framing innocent people was well-known.

Qiu Jiangping’s expression remained impassive. He didn’t argue. Since the bodies had been cremated, no matter how much others questioned it, the coroner’s report remained the only evidence.

Shi Yujun said, “Even if the coroner’s report is insufficient as evidence, someone witnessed Shi Hao with the child abductors last night, and he even attempted to silence the witness. We have a credible eyewitness.”

Yuan Jia shouted, “That’s right! I saw him with my own eyes! He even injured me. I barely escaped with my life.”

A sharp, girlish voice came from outside, “That’s impossible.”

The crowd at the entrance parted, and a young woman floated in. She wore a peach-colored Daoist robe with a cloud pattern, her appearance delicate and beautiful, a sword at her waist.

Shi Yujun asked, “Who is this young lady?”

The girl bowed towards the magistrate, “I am Du Yuejiao of Ming Kun Monastery. Shi Hao was with me all last night. I can testify that he had nothing to do with the child abductions.”

Qiu Jiangping said, “Miss Du, you didn’t recognize him at the Marquis’ residence last time.”

Du Yuejiao said sharply, “Aren’t you the chief constable? How can you be so dim-witted? Of course, I didn’t recognize him before we met at the Marquis’ residence. But since we met there, I naturally recognize him now.”

Her sharp words, and her naturally sarcastic tone, made the crowd chuckle.

Qiu Jiangping’s face flushed red, then white, with anger. “You weren’t very friendly towards him back then.”

Du Yuejiao snorted, “I didn’t know he was my uncle’s disciple back then. Why should I have been friendly? After returning to the monastery and learning he’s a fellow disciple, why would I treat him poorly?

“In fact, I should apologize for my previous behavior!”

Yuan Jia shouted, “Even if you were together these past few days, I encountered this villain last night. He left secretly…”

    Du Yuejiao said, “That’s impossible!”

Qiu Jiangping asked, “Why is that?”

Du Yuejiao pursed her lips, “We were together last night.”

Yuan Jia said, “It was the middle of the night.”

Du Yuejiao said, “We were together in the middle of the night.”

Qiu Jiangping asked, “Was anyone else with you?”

Du Yuejiao said, “Just the two of us. We were in the wilderness; there was no one else around.”

Qiu Jiangping said, “He could have left while you were asleep…”

Du Yuejiao said, “We weren’t asleep.”

Qiu Jiangping frowned, “The two of you, in the middle of the night, alone in the wilderness, and you weren’t asleep. What were you doing?”

The girl’s face flushed crimson. She stamped her foot and exclaimed, “None of your business!”

The crowd outside roared with laughter. Someone shouted, “A man and a woman, alone in the wilderness in the middle of the night, and they weren’t asleep. What do you think they were doing?”

The laughter grew louder, and someone even whistled. Another person shouted, “They were doing the wild thing!”

Shi Yujun banged his gavel repeatedly, “Order! Order!” But the courtroom remained chaotic.

    Qiu Jiangping was speechless.

Shi Yujun frowned, glared at Qiu Jiangping, and, seeing the commotion outside, called his clerk over and whispered, “How should we handle this case?”

The clerk leaned in and said, “My lord, I don’t think the Six Gates’ evidence and witnesses are very credible. This Shi Hao saved the County Mistress. Small Han Mountain City is a prominent local family, and he now has connections to the Chongxian Sect. Based on this flimsy evidence…”

Shi Yujun knew the Six Gates were likely framing him.

But in the past, their victims had been powerless and unable to defend themselves. Their pleas of innocence had been ignored.

Frankly, if this young man were just the young master of Small Han Mountain City, wrongly accusing him wouldn’t be a big deal.

But now that the Chongxian Sect was involved, he didn’t want to antagonize such a powerful martial arts sect.

He slammed his gavel, “The evidence and witnesses in this case are unclear. Release the suspect! We will re-evaluate if new evidence emerges.”

Court guards removed Shi Hao’s shackles. Qiu Jiangping said urgently, “Your Honor…”

Shi Yujun glanced at him, “The case is closed. That’s final.” Although he didn’t know why the local Six Gates had a grudge against this young man, he didn’t want to get involved.

Helpless, Qiu Jiangping bowed and retreated.

Outside the courthouse, Shi Hao bowed to Daoist Lan Ke, “Thank you for your help, Senior.”

Daoist Lan Ke stroked his short beard and smiled, “Don’t thank me. My niece told me that if it weren’t for you, rescuing her from that demonic villain, she might have met a terrible fate. You saved my niece, so it was only right for me to help you.”

It turned out that Daoist Lan Ke’s surname was also Du. He was Du Yuejiao’s uncle in the Chongxian Sect and also her blood relative.

Du Yuejiao looked at Shi Hao and whispered, “You were with me last night. Why didn’t you say so in court and let me testify for you?”

    Shi Hao hesitated, “Well…”

Du Yuejiao glanced at him, her heart softening. She whispered, “You…” She trailed off, lost in thought.

Qiu Jiangping approached them. Shi Hao sneered and walked towards him.

Qiu Jiangping’s eyes were sharp, but he forced a smile, “So, Young Master Shi is a disciple of Perfected Lan Ke of the Chongxian Sect. My apologies, my apologies!”

Shi Hao smiled faintly, “You’re too kind, Chief Constable.”

Qiu Jiangping stared at him, “Today’s events were a misunderstanding. Please don’t take it to heart, Young Master Shi. If we can put this behind us, should you ever need the assistance of the Six Gates, we will be at your service.”

Shi Hao smiled, “Of course, of course.”

They exchanged insincere bows, and Qiu Jiangping turned and left.

Shi Hao returned to Daoist Lan Ke and Du Yuejiao.

Du Yuejiao frowned and asked, puzzled, “Why would the Six Gates arrest you instead of pursuing the real criminals?”

Shi Hao sneered, “That constable called Yuan Jia is the supernatural ability user I encountered in the mountains last night.”

Du Yuejiao’s expression changed, “But that supernatural ability user is working with the child traffickers! Does that mean…”

  • I, The Man Who’ll Conquer Both the Immortal Venerable and the Demon Empress 22

    Chapter 22: Cornered Beast

Shi Hao frowned, “It’s a pity I couldn’t save those children.”

Du Yuejiao said softly, “Since so many children have gone missing, the Six Gates shouldn’t ignore it. They’ll eventually find these people.”

Shi Hao shook his head without saying anything.

He didn’t really believe the Six Gates would put much effort into this matter.

But then he remembered that Yue Ya’er had brought the Thunderclap Eighteen Riders to Jin Prefecture specifically to pressure the Six Gates.

With pressure from a prominent barbarian family like the Yue Ke Tai clan, the local Six Gates wouldn’t dare to be too negligent in this case.

Under Shi Hao’s care, Du Yuejiao’s condition had greatly improved. Although she hadn’t fully recovered, she just needed a few more days of rest.

At daybreak, Shi Hao accompanied her back towards Ming Kun Monastery.

Along the way, they stopped at a town where Shi Hao bought her a set of clothes from a clothing store.

The town didn’t have any fine fabrics. The ready-made outfit was a simple blue cotton dress, the kind worn by ordinary commoner girls.

Du Yuejiao changed into the new clothes in the forest. Shi Hao saw that it fit her reasonably well.

Because she was naturally beautiful, even in such a simple dress, she looked like a delicate orchid in the forest.

They reached the gates of Ming Kun Monastery, and Shi Hao stopped.

Du Yuejiao turned to him, “Brother Shi…”

Shi Hao said slowly, “I’ll leave you here.”

Du Yuejiao lowered her head and whispered, “Brother Shi, won’t you come in and sit for a while? You saved me. My master will be very grateful.”

Shi Hao smiled faintly, “No, I haven’t been back to the city for several days. I should go back and check on things. And I need to report what I saw last night to the Six Gates. Although those people have probably moved, the Six Gates might still be able to find some clues.

“Also, I encountered that supernatural ability user last night. Perhaps someone in the Six Gates knows who he is.”

Du Yuejiao opened her mouth, wanting to say something, but then stopped.

Shi Hao bid her farewell and turned to leave. Behind him, the girl watched him silently until Zhuo Mulan and the others emerged from the monastery. She turned and went to greet her master.

Shi Hao entered Jin City and walked back towards his residence.

    As he walked, he frowned.

Suddenly, he stopped in the middle of the street. Figures appeared on the rooftops, aiming crossbows at him.

“Six Gates official business!” The shout caused chaos in the street as people scattered.

Numerous martial artists, some in official uniforms, some in plain clothes, surrounded him.

Qiu Jiangping, the chief constable of the local Six Gates, stepped forward.

Dressed in a black tunic with embroidered eagles on the sleeves, Qiu Jiangping, as chief constable, also possessed an eighth-rank foundation.

However, not being a Daoist cultivator, the signs of his external martial arts training were obvious: his skin was bronzed, his muscles well-defined, his eyes sharp, his entire demeanor as sharp as a blade.

“Constable Qiu,” Shi Hao said calmly, looking at the approaching Qiu Jiangping, “What crime have I committed to warrant such a display of force?”

Qiu Jiangping sneered, “You should know what crimes you’ve committed. Are you going to surrender peacefully, or resist arrest and force us to kill you on the spot?”

Shi Hao slowly scanned his surroundings.

There were about sixty crossbowmen, all armed with powerful crossbows and sharp arrows.

Qiu Jiangping himself was an eighth-rank expert. The Jin Prefecture Six Gates couldn’t possibly have only one eighth-rank martial artist. There were likely a dozen or so ninth-rank experts, as well as many unranked but experienced martial artists recruited by the Six Gates.

He had no chance of escaping this encirclement.

Although many people were watching from the sidelines, the Six Gates constables were known for their arrogance and abuse of power, so no one dared to speak up.

Further down the street, several palanquins were blocked by the Six Gates’ operation. Attendants came to inquire about the commotion, and some lower-ranking constables quietly explained the situation.

Shi Hao untied his sword, tossed it aside, and said loudly, “I, Shi Hao, have a clear conscience. Although I don’t know what crime Constable Qiu intends to charge me with, since you’ve brought so many men, I’ll gladly accompany you.”

His voice, although not loud, carried far.

Qiu Jiangping snorted, “I, Qiu, always uphold the law. I wouldn’t wrongly accuse anyone. If you’re truly innocent, you won’t be unjustly convicted.”

    He barked, “Take him away!”

Constables swarmed forward, placed Shi Hao in shackles, and escorted him to prison.

Inside the cell, Shi Hao sat cross-legged in his shackles, his mind racing. He couldn’t understand why the Six Gates were targeting him.

But he wasn’t worried. He had saved County Mistress Li Tong on Red Mountain. And Deng Liang, loyal friend that he was, had spread the news among the wealthy merchants and gentry. He had announced his name loudly in the street, ensuring the story would spread.

Unless the Marquis’ residence completely disregarded their reputation, they would definitely inquire about this matter.

He sat quietly in the cell, cultivating his internal energy. No one came to see him, and no one came to torture him.

Although the jailer brought him food, he didn’t touch it, sustaining himself with his true energy.

The next morning, Qiu Jiangping arrived with his men, gave him a cold look, and said, “Bring him to the court.”

They dragged him out of the cell and escorted him to the courthouse.

Shi Yujun, the prefect, sat on the magistrate’s bench, dressed in his official robes and hat.

The court guards shouted, “Order!,” their voices loud and imposing.

Shi Yujun glanced at Shi Hao and then gestured to Qiu Jiangping. When Qiu Jiangping approached, Shi Yujun whispered, “Are you certain you have the right person? The Marquis’ residence specifically instructed us not to use torture or force a confession.

“Even my wife mentioned it this morning. It seems the County Mistress has interceded on his behalf. If you don’t have solid evidence, it’s best to release him quickly.”

Qiu Jiangping also lowered his voice, “Rest assured, my lord. We have irrefutable evidence, both witnesses and physical evidence. And you don’t have to worry about the County Mistress. This case is being overseen by the young lady from the capital. Our men are counting on this case to earn merits.”

Shi Yujun pondered for a moment and nodded. He suddenly noticed a crowd gathering outside the courthouse.

Qiu Jiangping slammed the gavel, “Silence! What are you all doing here? Clerk, why aren’t these people being removed?”

The clerk hurried over and whispered, “My lord, these are representatives from the local gentry, along with many onlookers. The prisoner is the young master of Small Han Mountain City. Someone spread rumors that the authorities are arresting him to suppress the local gentry, making everyone nervous.”

Shi Yujun frowned and called Qiu Jiangping over again, “Are you certain there’s no problem with the evidence and witnesses? This man has a certain status. If you can’t build a solid case, you’ll bear the consequences.”

He was clearly aware of the Six Gates’ methods. He would be grateful if even half of their cases were legitimate, so he was skeptical.

Qiu Jiangping gritted his teeth, “Rest assured, my lord. There’s no problem.”

Seeing his confidence, Shi Yujun nodded, sat up straight, and slammed the gavel again, “Silence!”

    The courtroom fell silent.

Qiu Jiangping approached Shi Hao and said loudly, “Shi Hao, I ask you, were you at Disordered Chess Mountain on the night of May 18th?”

Shi Hao was surprised by this first question, his heart pounding, but thanks to the Evil Shadow Disguise Technique’s control over his facial muscles, his expression remained unchanged, “Yes.”

Qiu Jiangping turned and addressed the magistrate, “My lord, that night, more than a dozen of our Six Gates men were killed on Disordered Chess Mountain, including Constable Zhao Haisong and the Rat and Bat Duo. They were all killed by this Shi Hao.”

Shi Hao’s heart sank. He hadn’t expected this to be revealed.

He had known that the Six Gates were villains who relied on the barbarian court and committed all sorts of evil deeds.

But today, he experienced their power firsthand.

    He regretted underestimating them.

The crowd outside the courthouse fell silent.

Although the Six Gates had a bad reputation, killing more than a dozen of their men was a serious crime. Even if he escaped temporarily, he would be placed on the Six Gates’ blacklist, with nowhere to hide.

Unless he reached the level of the “Top Ten Experts on the Blacklist,” in which case the entire Six Gates would avoid him.

Those top-level experts were listed on the blacklist simply to warn the local Six Gates, “Don’t mess with this person.”

Qiu Jiangping pointed at Shi Hao and said sternly, “This man not only killed Constable Zhao and more than a dozen of our colleagues, but he is also the mastermind behind a recent major case.”

He looked around and said sharply, “Recently, a group of villains, taking advantage of the refugee crisis in the central plains, have been abducting and stealing children, engaging in child trafficking and profiting from this heinous act. We have confirmed that this man is the mastermind.”

An uproar erupted around him. Shi Hao turned to Qiu Jiangping, his eyebrows slightly raised.

Shi Yujun slammed the gavel to restore order and said loudly, “Shi Hao, do you confess to your crimes?”

Shi Hao looked up and said, “These are false accusations. I didn’t kill Constable Zhao, and I didn’t commit this crime.”

Qiu Jiangping said, “You secretly cultivated martial arts, hiding your skills from everyone. That night, many of our Six Gates men were killed on Disordered Chess Mountain, and you happened to be there as well. Do you really believe in such coincidences?”

He stepped forward and presented a stack of documents, “This is the coroner’s report. According to the examination, all the victims were killed by finger strikes. The attacker possesses at least eighth-rank strength. The wounds are thin and deep, indicating the use of fingers as swords, and there are signs of freezing around the wounds.

“On Red Mountain, many people witnessed Shi Hao using a branch as a sword. Using a branch as a sword and using fingers as a sword are similar. I personally witnessed Miss Du Yuejiao of Ming Kun Monastery exchanging a palm strike with him at the Marquis’ residence. His internal energy is orthodox Daoist, carrying a chilling aura, matching the attacker on Disordered Chess Mountain.

“This man was at Disordered Chess Mountain that night. His swordsmanship, his internal energy, everything matches. What are the odds of such a coincidence? If he’s not the killer, then who is?”

The crowd outside the courthouse murmured.

A strange expression appeared on Shi Hao’s face.

For a moment, he was truly shocked by Qiu Jiangping and the Six Gates’ abilities.

He had used a different appearance and different martial arts, yet they had still seen through him. The Six Gates’ abilities were truly terrifying and unpredictable.

But then he realized that Qiu Jiangping hadn’t actually found the real killer. He was simply framing him.

On Disordered Chess Mountain, although he had used finger strikes to kill Zhao Haisong, the Rat and Bat Duo, and the others, he hadn’t used his “fingers as swords,” and the wounds weren’t frozen, but burned by the Mysterious Charm Technique and the Severing Meridian Burning Heart Finger.

With Qiu Jiangping’s skills, he couldn’t possibly mistake these distinct techniques.

The coroner’s report presented by Qiu Jiangping was completely fabricated, false evidence designed to frame Shi Hao.

Qiu Jiangping knew that the killer on Disordered Chess Mountain and Shi Hao couldn’t possibly be the same person.

Finger techniques versus swordsmanship, burning energy versus freezing energy, demonic arts versus Daoist internal energy… Everything was different.

Yet, Qiu Jiangping was using fabricated evidence to frame Shi Hao… the real killer!

Shi Hao couldn’t control his expression, a mixture of amusement and disbelief appearing on his face… Was this a stroke of luck for Qiu Jiangping, or a stroke of misfortune for himself?

To be “identified” by the Six Gates in such a way?

Qiu Jiangping knew Shi Hao couldn’t possibly be the killer, but that didn’t stop him from framing him.

Shi Hao knew he was the killer… but Qiu Jiangping couldn’t possibly know that!

Shi Yujun quickly scanned the evidence presented by Qiu Jiangping and looked down, “Shi Hao, what is your defense?”

Shi Hao said calmly, “This is a false accusation. I…”

Qiu Jiangping stepped forward again, “My lord, I have other witnesses who can prove that Shi Hao intended to kill more than just those who died on Disordered Chess Mountain.”

Shi Yujun said, “Bring them forward!”

Qiu Jiangping turned and said, “Please bring Witness Yuan Jia to the stand.”

Shi Hao, still in shackles, turned and saw a short, thin man with a sharp, monkey-like face, dressed in an official uniform, enter with two court guards.

Only then did Shi Hao understand why Qiu Jiangping had suddenly targeted him, even risking offending the prefectural government and causing conflict, just to frame him.

Last night’s encounter had inadvertently cornered them…

  • I, The Man Who’ll Conquer Both the Immortal Venerable and the Demon Empress 21

Chapter 21: The Earth Dog Star

Thanks to Shi Hao’s meticulous care, after another day, Du Yuejiao’s condition significantly improved.

If not for his eighth-rank foundation and orthodox Taisu Immortal Pavilion techniques, her recovery wouldn’t have been so swift.

Du Yuejiao’s internal energy had mostly recovered, and although her body was still weak, she could move around with the help of her own power.

However, several of her meridians were still blocked, requiring many more days to heal completely. The villain’s finger techniques were truly brutal, and even Daoist true energy needed time to dispel the lingering effects.

That evening, Du Yuejiao, wearing the young man’s robe and a makeshift grass rope belt, sat under a tree, watching him barbecue with great interest.

Shi Hao’s skills seemed quite impressive. He carefully collected the dripping grease in a plate, mixed it with spices he carried with him, and brushed it onto the roasting meat repeatedly.

This was the first time Du Yuejiao had witnessed such a scene of outdoor cooking.

Having dedicated herself to cultivation in the Chongxian Sect, she had never needed to concern herself with such mundane tasks.

Now, watching him work so meticulously, she found it strangely captivating.

Shi Hao used his sword to cut into the half-cooked pheasant, allowing the marinade to penetrate deeper with the hot grease.

After a while, the pheasant was perfectly roasted, crispy on the outside, tender on the inside.

He tore off a leg, carefully removed the slightly charred outer layer, and then sliced the tender meat into thin strips with a small knife before offering it to the girl under the tree.

Since she was recovering from a serious illness, she couldn’t eat anything too greasy.

    His attentiveness touched Du Yuejiao.

As night fell, Du Yuejiao, having rested for a while, felt much better, her energy mostly restored, and wanted to walk around.

Shi Hao accompanied her on a stroll through the forest.

The new moon hung in the sky, a thin crescent.

The stars, in the dim moonlight, shone brightly.

Shi Hao remained mostly silent, not asking too many questions or doing anything unnecessary, simply accompanying her quietly.

Du Yuejiao couldn’t help but wonder what kind of person he was.

She recalled their first encounter, his arrogance and defiance, his refusal to yield.

Why was he so gentle now? This silent protection, this unspoken consideration, was completely different from the arrogance she had seen before, but it was precisely this difference that touched her even more.

Suddenly, a gust of wind swept past, and the young man behind her grabbed her wrist.

Du Yuejiao looked at him in surprise.

Shi Hao whispered, “There’s someone down there!”

He pulled her behind a tree, hiding in the shadows, and looked down the slope.

They saw a group of people escorting a number of children through the wilderness.

The men were dressed in grey tunics, armed with swords and sabers, their faces covered. The children, mostly frail and weak, looked like they came from poor families. Some, unable to keep up, collapsed.

The men in grey would roughly pull them up, yelling and forcing them to continue. If a child was truly unable to walk, they would carry him, not wanting to slow down.

Du Yuejiao whispered, “Who are they? What are they doing?”

Shi Hao whispered, “I heard there’s a group abducting children. It seems these are them. I didn’t expect to find them here.”

He thought to himself, “With so many refugees in the central plains, such incidents are inevitable. But both Dark Thunder and the barbarian court have noticed this trend. It must be quite widespread for even the barbarian court to pressure the Six Gates to investigate.”

He observed that the men in grey were organized and trained in martial arts.

Although most were unranked, there were at least three ninth-rank experts among them.

These were definitely not ordinary traffickers, but an organized gang.

He looked at the direction they were heading, even more puzzled. They were going northwest.

Even for child trafficking or smuggling, they should logically be heading south, towards more prosperous regions.

West Shu Province was already remote. Further northwest was desolate wilderness. What were they doing taking these children there?

Shi Hao knew that if it was just business, the children would at least be kept alive.

Although their fate might not be good, sold to brothels or beggar gangs, they would at least survive for a while.

But if they were needed by the demonic sects, even survival was uncertain.

Shi Hao himself was still worried about how he would obtain one hundred “living souls” to advance his demonic cultivation after he mastered the Mysterious Charm Technique.

Similarly, if someone’s advancement ritual required the blood of children… it was entirely possible.

He remembered the Enchanting Fire Witch Su Mei’s casual words, “The price isn’t your own,” and “Just find an unnoticed village and slaughter everyone,” her tone indifferent.

For the demonic sects, such things were perfectly normal.

Shi Hao turned to Du Yuejiao and whispered, “Miss Du, they’re moving so quickly. They must have a base nearby. I’ll follow them and see which sect they belong to and where their base is, so I can inform the Six Gates. You…”

Du Yuejiao blurted out, “I’ll go with you.”

Shi Hao shook his head, “You haven’t fully recovered yet, Miss Du. You shouldn’t exert yourself. Rest in the cave. Don’t worry, I’ll find out who they are and return quickly.”

Du Yuejiao opened her mouth, then lowered her head and nodded slightly.

Shi Hao left the cover of the trees, preparing to descend the slope. Behind him, the girl’s voice came again, “Wait.”

Shi Hao turned and looked at her.

The girl, looking slightly embarrassed, fidgeted with her hair and whispered, “Just… call me Yuejiao.”

Shi Hao nodded, “Miss Yuejiao… Yuejiao, wait for me.” Worried that the group might get too far away, he used his movement technique and sped off.

The girl watched him disappear into the darkness, thinking that he was not only willing to protect her, despite their previous animosity, but also concerned about those unrelated children.

She thought to herself, “He’s actually such a good person…”

Shi Hao secretly followed the grey-clad martial artists.

He hadn’t specifically trained in light-foot techniques, and he didn’t dare to use the Soul Chasing Locking Steps casually.

He had set a rule for himself: only use the Mysterious Charm Technique, Soul Chasing Locking Steps, and Severing Meridian Burning Heart Finger when disguised with the Evil Shadow Disguise Technique.

When appearing as himself, he would only use his Daoist foundation and the swordsmanship taught by the Holy Jade Immortal.

Dual cultivation of Daoist and demonic arts should be his hidden trump card, not to be revealed lightly.

It was the clever Enchanting Fire Witch who had anticipated this and taught him the Evil Shadow Disguise Technique.

Although the stars shone brightly, the faint moonlight of the new moon cast the surroundings in darkness.

The men were moving quickly, occasionally startling nocturnal animals in the desolate wilderness.

Although he hadn’t trained in specific light-foot techniques, the “Six Immortal Lightning Strikes” included movement techniques that complemented the swordsmanship. Using these techniques, Shi Hao was able to move swiftly through the forest, his feet barely touching the ground.

They continued deeper into the mountains, entering a desolate, ancient forest, a place rarely visited even by hunters.

He saw them ascend a mountain peak. That must be their destination.

The children, exhausted, were being carried by the men in grey.

    Even the men were panting.

The mountain wasn’t tall, but the trees were dense, obscuring what lay within.

Shi Hao, not daring to be careless, followed them stealthily, staying close to avoid losing them.

A strange cooing sound echoed from ahead. Shi Hao quickly hid behind a tree.

The sound stopped abruptly. He peeked out but couldn’t see them anymore.

They had vanished into the dim forest.

Unwilling to give up, he flickered forward, using the trees for cover.

A dark figure dropped from a tree.

Shi Hao almost collided with a man with a sharp, monkey-like face.

The man, startled, let out a shriek.

He hadn’t noticed Shi Hao either, simply moving quickly through the forest, patrolling the area. He had almost bumped into him by accident.

His shriek alerted the others. Someone shouted, “Something’s wrong!”

    A flurry of sounds followed.

Shi Hao thought, “This is bad,” and quickly retreated.

The short man with the sharp, monkey-like face darted around him. Shi Hao watched him leaping through the trees without making a sound.

This bizarre sight made him realize why he hadn’t detected him earlier… This was a supernatural ability user.

He wasn’t using some advanced light-foot technique, but a supernatural ability.

The man leaped from one tree to another, without even the slightest whoosh of wind that should accompany such movement, appearing beside Shi Hao instantly.

A blade flashed, attacking Shi Hao from the side, the angle cunning and unpredictable.

Shi Hao knew the man was trying to stall him, waiting for his companions to arrive. He wouldn’t be entangled.

He deflected the blade with his sword, his second strike carrying a chilling icy aura, aimed at the man’s throat.

The short man, startled, kicked off a tree and, with seemingly nothing to push against, abruptly changed direction, appearing on another tree in the distance.

Shi Hao was now certain he was a supernatural ability user… Changing direction mid-air without any support. If this was a martial arts technique, how powerful was this man?

He wasn’t even sure if the Holy Jade Immortal or the Enchanting Fire Witch could achieve such effortless movement.

Unwilling to engage, Shi Hao turned and used his movement technique to rush down the slope.

The man harassed him from behind, using his ghostly movements to attack and slow him down.

Shi Hao’s speed decreased, and the sounds of pursuit grew louder, closing in on him.

Just as the short man thought he had him, Shi Hao’s sword flashed, flying through the air – the “Mysterious Firefly Flying Sword” from the Six Immortal Lightning Strikes.

The sword energy, like a fleeting firefly, struck the man’s shoulder, drawing blood.

Shi Hao grasped his hand, and the sword flew back to him, its speed increasing, quickly leaving his pursuers behind.

Without the interference of the short man with the strange supernatural ability, the others couldn’t catch up. They could only watch as he disappeared into the darkness.

Shi Hao took a detour and returned to the cave just before dawn.

He saw a bonfire burning before the cave, and Du Yuejiao sitting beside it, looking anxious.

She sighed in relief when she saw him emerge from the forest and whispered, “What happened?”

Shi Hao shook his head helplessly, “I wanted to find their base and then secretly inform the Six Gates. But they have a supernatural ability user among them. His power is bizarre and unpredictable, not only incredibly fast but also completely silent.

“Although I was careful, I couldn’t detect him in advance, and my plan failed.

“Now that they know their location has been compromised, they’ll definitely move tonight. That mountain is far from here, even further from the city. Even if I inform the Six Gates now, it’ll be too late. Besides, the city gates are closed; I can’t enter the city.”

Du Yuejiao thought for a moment and said, “You’re probably talking about the ‘Earth Dog Star.’”

Shi Hao asked, “Earth Dog Star?”

Du Yuejiao said, “The Chongxian Sect has records of all the known divine crystals and the supernatural abilities they grant. The person you described has likely absorbed the ‘Earth Dog Star’ divine crystal. It’s an Earthly Fiend type, extremely suitable for assassination and stealth.

“It’s good that you returned safely after encountering such a supernatural ability user in the dark.”

As she said “It’s good that you returned safely,” she looked up at him, her eyes glistening.

Shi Hao thought about it and felt a sense of relief, “I was indeed careful. Although I didn’t detect him in advance, he didn’t notice me either. If he had seen me first, I probably wouldn’t have escaped his assassination.”

He realized the true power of supernatural abilities.

Like his Earthly Valor Tiger, which contained the Earthly Valor Star divine crystal.

As a magical weapon, its power could only be used once a day. But if he absorbed the divine crystal and became an Earthly Valor Star supernatural ability user, he could use the divine form and power at will, significantly increasing his strength.

    The thought alone was tempting.

Although becoming a supernatural ability user meant he could no longer use any other magical weapons, a significant drawback, many people still couldn’t resist the temptation.

After all, the ability to use a supernatural power at will was incredibly alluring.

  • I, The Man Who’ll Conquer Both the Immortal Venerable and the Demon Empress 20

    Chapter 20: No More Nightmares

When Du Yuejiao awoke, she found herself in a small, enclosed space.

Her hands and feet were bound, and her body swayed with the rumbling of wheels.

    She was being transported.

She didn’t know where she was being taken, but she no longer cared.

She stared into the empty darkness with empty eyes.

Her body still ached, but the pain was gradually numbed by the coldness in her heart.

She felt like she was adrift at sea, carried by a thin sheet of ice that could melt at any moment.

Surrounded by raging waves, escape was meaningless, hope was meaningless.

The scars covering her body and the shameful marks carved on her thighs were all that remained.

She was even afraid of the light, which would expose everything, revealing her shame to the world.

Noisy shouts, running footsteps, the haggling of merchants, soldiers yelling and driving away refugees – these sounds swirled around her.

But she simply stared into the darkness, her body swaying with the movement of the small space.

For a while, the sounds subsided.

But the rumbling of the wheels continued.

Gradually, the sounds returned, louder now, more wheels rumbling, some old and creaking.

    Suddenly, the swaying stopped.

“Open it up!” a voice barked.

“Officer!” another voice pleaded, “My little sister died from illness. We don’t have money for a proper burial, so we’re just taking her to the mountains to bury her.”

“I said open it!” the soldier’s voice was laced with irritation, “How do we know what you’re carrying in there?”

“You’re right, officer, you’re right,” the voice replied.

Suddenly, chaos erupted. The girl’s body was jostled violently, bumping against the walls of the small space.

“Stop them! Stop them!” someone shouted, the voice quickly fading into the distance.

The cart sped up, bumping along the mountain roads. Sometimes the girl’s body would jolt as the cart passed over rocks and stones; sometimes she would be thrown from side to side.

Unconsciously, tears mixed with blood streamed from her eyes, staining the darkness.

She could have screamed for help at the market or at the city gates, attracting attention.

But she had given up on all hope.

The creaking sounds grew louder, and then, with a snap, the wood broke, and she tumbled within the small space.

“This cart is useless!” someone said. “I wonder what’s inside?”

“Who cares? As long as we get paid!” another voice replied, “Luckily, we’re almost there. Let’s just carry it the rest of the way.”

Her body was lifted and carried, the movement gentler than the previous jolting.

Then, the movement stopped. One of the men said, “We’ve brought it, sir.”

“Take it inside!” A cold voice, like a sharpened blade against a whetstone, commanded.

She was carried inside and placed somewhere.

The two men went outside, followed by the clinking of coins and their receding footsteps.

Suddenly, the cold voice barked, “Who’s there?”

A series of loud, rapid clanging sounds followed, along with the roar of flames, the sound of a sword cutting through wood, and the whoosh of wind.

The cold voice shouted angrily, “Who are you?”

Another voice, cold and arrogant, replied, “Demonic villain, you deserve to die!”

A resounding boom echoed, as if the earth itself trembled, followed by a muffled groan.

The sounds of shattering stone, falling trees, and a whistling sword indicated that the hooked-nosed villain was fighting a mysterious assailant.

The fight raged on, the sounds growing more intense, reaching a climax.

The roar of flames gradually subsided, replaced by the increasingly loud and continuous whistling of a sword.

A gust of wind swept through the air, snapping branches and leaves.

Then, the sound of a sword being sheathed, “You’re quite fast.”

Steady footsteps approached and stopped beside her.

A hand lifted the wooden lid, and with a bang, light flooded in.

The girl’s eyes remained blank and unfocused, listless, as if she had become a living corpse.

However, the surprised voice that followed startled her, “Miss Du?”

Realizing she had been recognized, her pupils slowly focused, her gaze landing on the man’s face.

It was a young man with a gentle and handsome face… It was the young master of Small Han Mountain City, the one she had ridiculed and belittled just days ago.

The girl screamed, curling up inside the wooden coffin, her hysterical cries sharp and piercing, laced with helpless sobs.

Her abused, scarred body, the marks carved on her legs, were all exposed to his gaze.

She had thought darkness was the deepest pain, but now she realized there was a deeper hell beneath it.

Just a few days ago, she had stood before him, sword in hand, mocking him as “cowardly unorthodox scum.”

Now, she was exposed to him like this. She wished she were dead.

She screamed and cried. The young man quickly took off his outer robe and covered her, lifting her from the coffin, his voice soft, “Miss Du, it’s alright now. I’ll get you out of here.” He turned and quickly sped away.

“Leave me alone!” the girl sobbed weakly in his arms, “Just leave me alone.”

Trees blurred past them, light and shadow flickering across their bodies.

The mountain wind rustled through the leaves, carrying away her fading sobs—

Shi Hao carried Du Yuejiao to a cave deep in the forest. In his arms, she weakly struggled, then continued crying silently.

He had already undone the Evil Shadow Disguise Technique.

He knew that true “disguise” wasn’t just about changing one’s appearance, but about becoming a different person entirely. That way, it was less likely to be detected.

He put his other persona aside and tried to see things from her perspective.

He found himself sympathizing with her. The person who had harmed and tortured her was truly despicable.

“Miss Du, your meridians are sealed. I’ll try my best to circulate your blood and energy and unblock your acupoints,” Shi Hao said gently.

He helped her sit up and sat behind her, his expression serious.

He draped his outer robe over her and channeled his true energy into her back, clearing her meridians.

This was something only orthodox Daoist internal energy cultivation could achieve.

Although there were countless martial arts styles, most sects couldn’t cultivate this kind of healing energy.

This was one of the unique aspects of Daoist internal elixir cultivation, and also one of the main reasons for the Daoist sects’ prominence in the martial world.

After a while, Shi Hao withdrew his hand and gently helped Du Yuejiao lie down. He whispered, “Miss Du, that villain is a demonic cultivator. His methods of burning meridians and sealing acupoints are quite brutal. I can only help you recover slowly.”

He asked, “Shall I take you back to Ming Kun Monastery?”

Du Yuejiao, huddled under the robe, shook her head and whispered, “No… don’t.”

She didn’t want anyone to see her like this.

If she had a choice, she wished this man had never appeared.

Having cultivated the Chongxian Sect’s secret techniques, Du Yuejiao knew how formidable the villain’s methods were.

This young master had indeed helped her recover some of her internal energy, giving her a glimmer of hope.

As if understanding her feelings, the young master of Small Han Mountain City spoke softly, “Then rest here. Don’t worry, I’ll keep watch outside.”

The girl watched him leave the cave.

She curled up, pulling the robe tightly around her, covering her legs.

She saw his figure standing outside, his back to her, motionless.

Tears silently streamed down her face, her emotions a tangled mess.

This feeling of being protected brought her a sense of comfort and also a deep sense of guilt.

She slept soundly. She hadn’t slept so well in days.

For the past few nights, she had been forced into a restless sleep by the villain’s acupoint sealing technique, leaving her exhausted.

Later, she had a nightmare. The villain’s hooked nose, like a giant mountain, loomed over her.

She woke up in a cold sweat, trembling, the robe slipping from her shoulders.

Looking outside, it was dark, and the flickering light of a fire could be seen.

Wiping away the sweat, she crawled towards the cave entrance, fear and anxiety gripping her heart.

She clutched the robe to her chest, one hand subconsciously holding the edge of the robe, tightly covering the marks on her legs.

Peeking outside, she saw a pot on a bonfire, the aroma of meat wafting through the air.

The young man sat beside the fire, his back to her, his face gentle and bathed in the last rays of the setting sun.

She silently lay back down, curling up, watching the firelight at the cave entrance.

As darkness fell, the flames flickered and danced.

She could still see the gentle glow, reminding her that she had finally escaped the villain’s clutches.

Tears silently streamed down her face, her thoughts, along with the hope that had been frozen, slowly thawing.

After a while, the young master of Small Han Mountain City brought a burning torch into the cave, illuminating the space.

He carefully entered, carrying a bowl of broth.

He gently helped her sit up, not saying a word, not asking any questions.

He simply fed her, spoonful by spoonful. After she finished the broth, he channeled his true energy into her body, helping her recover her strength and internal energy.

Then, he helped her lie down again.

“I’ll keep watch outside,” he said, and left.

The gentle, warm glow, even after the sun had set, seemed to linger.

It covered the cave entrance, enveloping her sleep.

At least tonight, there would be no more nightmares…

She slept soundly that night, so deeply that even when daylight began to filter into the cave the next morning, she lingered in the sweet embrace of sleep, reluctant to wake up.

Perhaps, like someone who had been starving for a long time, even a coarse wowotou (steamed corn bun) tasted delicious.

At this moment, Du Yuejiao felt incredibly content just to be able to sleep peacefully in this cave.

Even though her bed was just a pile of dry grass the young man had gathered.

Even though her only covering was a simple robe.

After drinking another bowl of broth in the morning, she wrapped the robe around herself and, with Shi Hao’s help, slowly emerged from the cave into the sunlight.

The sky was clear and bright.

The warm sunlight bathed her body, lifting her spirits.

The robe he had given her was a simple, straight, wrap-around garment.

However, since Small Han Mountain City produced its own silk, the fabric was of high quality, soft against her skin.

Although it looked strange for a young woman to wear such a loose-fitting man’s robe, there was a certain beauty to it.

With Shi Hao’s help, she had recovered much of her strength and internal energy.

He accompanied her on a walk through the forest, helping her clear her mind.

They found a waterfall. In the evening, she bathed under the cascading water while Shi Hao kept watch outside.

After a long while, the sound of crying came from the direction of the waterfall.

Shi Hao, unsure of what had happened, quickly rushed over. He saw the girl sitting on the ground by the water, half-covered by the robe, crying as she scratched at her thigh with a sharp stone.

The area where the marks had been carved was now a bloody mess, the blood flowing into the stream.

She was hitting the wound with the sharp stone.

Shi Hao rushed over, pulled her into his arms, and whispered, “It’s alright… it’s alright… It’s really alright now.”

The girl dropped the stone, turned, and clung to him, sobbing uncontrollably.

Her cries were loud and heart-wrenching, as if she was releasing all the pain and humiliation she had endured.

Shi Hao held her tightly, like a protective eagle shielding its young, a pillar of strength, offering her comfort.

That night, the girl fell ill, her forehead burning with fever.

Even a ninth-rank Daoist cultivator, with their nascent internal elixir and having consumed a ninth-rank external elixir, rarely fell ill, let alone someone with an eighth-rank foundation like her.

However, that made her illness all the more troublesome.

It was likely because she had been holding everything in until her outburst that evening. Now, with her body and mind finally relaxed, she had succumbed to illness.

Shi Hao stayed by her side all night, caring for her, using his true energy to ease her suffering, never leaving her side.

Occasionally, she would wake up in her delirium and clutch his robe, like a child, refusing to let go.

  • I, The Man Who’ll Conquer Both the Immortal Venerable and the Demon Empress 19

    Chapter 19: The Lavish Prison

The moment Du Yuejiao woke up, she didn’t see the hateful hooked nose, but a writhing mass of snakes.

Snakes of all sizes and patterns intertwined, terrifying her. She recoiled with a scream.

She had been released from the rack, but her hands and feet were still bound.

She bumped into the young man behind her. He leaned down, placed his hand on her shoulder, and said slowly, “I have to admit, you’re more resilient than I expected.

“Honestly, I don’t understand what you’re holding out for. As far as I know, your parents are also Chinese. You have Chinese blood, yet you’re suffering to protect the secrets of a barbarian family. Do you think that’s honorable? Noble?

“You don’t have to suffer. I can let you go. No one will know what you said tonight. You’re a beautiful young woman, and I’m willing to give you this opportunity, something I rarely offer. Now, just nod your head and tell me you’ll cooperate.”

The girl’s lips were tightly sealed, her eyes filled with fear.

She saw the writhing pile of snakes, the burning furnace with a red-hot branding iron resting on the coals.

She saw the table with various torture instruments, small but menacing tools like iron clamps and pliers.

“It seems you’re still determined to resist,” the young man with the hooked nose said, untying the knot at the back of her neck that held her thin garment in place.

She struggled, trying to preserve her last shred of modesty, but it was useless.

The garment was ripped away and tossed into the furnace, the flames flaring up.

She huddled on the floor, trying to cover herself with her back and legs.

The young man with the hooked nose scooped the snakes into a sack and slowly approached her.

“I’ll kill you!” the girl screamed, a desperate, hysterical threat.

The sack, filled with snakes, was placed over her head. Her terrified screams were chilling.

The young man with the hooked nose stepped back, watching the writhing sack coldly.

    The snakes had been defanged.

Although they still had their fangs when he bought them, as the young master of Small Han Mountain City, he had access to hunters skilled in handling snakes.

He walked to the table, picked up one of the small torture instruments, and toyed with it casually as he watched the girl struggling and screaming inside the sack.

The loud, chaotic music continued from above, wave after wave.

Two more nights passed like this, and he still hadn’t learned anything.

Another night filled with the incessant music from above.

The girl was now tied to the wooden horse, face down, her hands and feet bound to its legs.

Suddenly, one of her hands twitched.

She woke up, but the hateful villain wasn’t there.

Perhaps he was delayed, or perhaps she had become slightly more resistant to his acupoint sealing technique and woke up earlier.

Whatever the reason, she was alone in the underground cell.

She realized this was her chance and used all her remaining strength.

Her wrists were chafed raw from the ropes, but she finally managed to free one hand.

Gritting her teeth, she shifted her body and, with her free hand, untied the other.

Gasping for breath, she sat up, not daring to waste a single moment.

She didn’t know when the villain would return.

Unable to reach her ankles, which were tied to the back legs of the wooden horse, she slowly inched backwards until she slid off, falling to the floor.

She landed on the cold, hard ground, her legs still tied to the wooden horse. She heard a cracking sound, perhaps a bone breaking.

But this pain was nothing compared to what she had endured these past few days.

She contorted her body and finally managed to untie the ropes around her ankles.

Looking down, she was naked, her body covered in bruises, the two vertical and two horizontal cuts on her thighs particularly gruesome.

One more cut, and it would form the character “正.”

She shuddered, the memories of the past few days filling her with terror.

She didn’t even know how she had endured it. The initial agony of having her muscles and tendons torn, followed by various forms of torture, had made her wish for death every moment.

She pulled herself up, using the wall for support. The torture instruments on the wooden table made her tremble just looking at them.

The disgusting, defanged snakes were still writhing in their cage in the corner, occasionally hissing.

The fire in the furnace had died out, but the large red candles on the lampstand beside the luxurious bed, likely replaced just before dawn, were still burning.

Her clothes had long been burned by the villain.

She limped to the bed, grabbed the crimson bedsheet, and wrapped it around herself.

Covered by the sheet, she slowly made her way to the door.

The door was closed, but thankfully, it wasn’t locked. She noticed the latch was on the inside, which puzzled her slightly.

This prison cell, filled with torture instruments, had a door that locked from the inside, as if it wasn’t meant to keep prisoners in, but rather to keep others out, perhaps for some activity with the prisoner.

She opened the door and climbed the stairs, each step a struggle due to her injured leg.

There were paintings on the walls, but in the dim light, she couldn’t make out what they depicted.

The music from above grew louder, along with laughter, both male and female.

Reaching the top of the stairs, she found another door. Fear gripped her, worried that it might be locked from the outside… but it wasn’t.

The latch was also on the inside. She opened the door and rushed out, the crimson bedsheet trailing behind her.

She ran through winding corridors, the sounds of music and laughter growing louder.

She burst into a large hall, brightly lit by red lanterns. The hall was filled with people seated at tables, the air thick with the smell of alcohol and noisy chatter.

“Help!” she cried, “Someone imprisoned me! Please help me report this to the authorities!”

People turned and looked at her, laughing. The men were dressed in fine clothes, while the women wore loose, revealing garments, some barely covered at all.

“What a beautiful girl!” A fat man reached out to touch her.

Du Yuejiao recoiled in fear, clutching the bedsheet tightly around her, trying to cover her thighs and the wounds on her legs. She turned, desperately seeking help, the laughing faces swirling around her like a carousel, as if they were watching some amusing spectacle.

    She screamed, “Please, help me!”

Their laughter only intensified. A drunk man stumbled towards her, reaching for her face, “Such a pretty girl. I haven’t seen you here before.”

Suddenly, an arm wrapped around her waist, pulling her close. A cold voice said, “She’s mine.”

Du Yuejiao’s heart sank at the sound of his voice. She didn’t even need to look up to “see” his hooked nose, his terrifying face.

“Tsk!” The fat man staggered away.

The cold, icy voice whispered in her ear, “You can keep running, it doesn’t matter. I’m guessing you’ve figured out where you are. I can let you go, just throw you out onto the street like this.

“Let everyone see a little Daoist nun from the Chongxian Sect, the woman they see as a celestial being, thrown naked out of this filthy place. Let them see the marks on your legs, let them guess why there are tally marks on your thighs.”

He released her, but she collapsed limply to the floor.

The young man with the hooked nose laughed, picked her up, and spun her around, the crimson bedsheet swirling like blood.

The girl sobbed in his arms, the laughter of the hall echoing around her, endless and mocking.

Surrounded by bright lights and revelry, she had fallen into an abyss of darkness.

The young man with the hooked nose carried her back to the underground “prison.”

He threw her onto the bed, her body rolling across the luxurious sheets.

She lay there, staring blankly at the ornate ceiling.

Her tear-filled eyes were devoid of light.

Her sobs ceased, and the lavish, bridal chamber-like prison fell silent.

Shi Hao felt he had made a mistake somewhere.

He didn’t know whether he had succeeded or failed.

He had tortured her body, tormented her mind, given her a glimmer of hope, and then cruelly crushed it.

He had thought that this would break her, forcing her to reveal the information he wanted.

But now, it seemed she had indeed broken.

She lay on the bed, tears streaming down her face, motionless.

Even after her tears dried, her eyes remained open, empty and unfocused, bloodshot.

She didn’t respond to any of his questions.

She was alive, but like a corpse.

This wasn’t what he wanted at all.

To be fair, although this girl had clearly been targeting him from the start, he had saved her junior sister, and all he got in return was ridicule and suspicion. That alone was irritating.

But his grudge against her wasn’t enough to warrant killing her.

And now, she looked no different from a corpse.

He left her alone that night, only forcing her to drink a bowl of broth before dawn.

During the day, he simply left her there, unbound, unlocked, untouched.

But she remained motionless, without even the will to live.

He couldn’t get any information from her like this.

In the end, he had to seal her Jade Pillow acupoint, forcing her to sleep.

After putting Du Yuejiao to sleep, Shi Hao, still disguised with the Evil Shadow Disguise Technique, returned to the courtyard to meet with Old Qiu, Lu Tong, and the others from Dark Thunder.

Old Qiu asked, “Righteous Hao, how did the interrogation go?”

Shi Hao slowly shook his head, “That girl is tougher than I expected. I haven’t been able to get anything out of her yet.”

Lu Tong said softly, “We’ve received new intel. Even the barbarian emperor seems to be questioning the Yue Ke Tai family about this experiment, as well as the Chongxian Sect. It seems Ming Kun Monastery didn’t report the God-Sealing Experiment initially. At least one of the six elders of the Chongxian Sect is on their way to Jin Prefecture.”

Shi Hao was inwardly surprised. Dark Thunder’s network seemed larger than he had imagined, capable of grasping the movements of the barbarian court and the Chongxian Sect’s upper echelons to some extent.

He frowned. This matter was indeed no small thing.

Lu Tong continued, “And there’s a young lady from the Yue Ke Tai family, a daughter of Yue Ke Tai Ni Nan, named Yue Ya’er, who has also arrived in Jin Prefecture. I wonder if it’s also related to the God-Sealing Experiment.”

    Shi Hao said, “It’s not.”

Old Qiu and Lu Tong looked at him.

Shi Hao clasped his hands behind his back, his expression darkening, “As far as I know, this Yue Ya’er seems to be here to investigate the recent surge in child abductions among the refugees. It has nothing to do with the God-Sealing Experiment.”

Lu Tong said in surprise, “We’ve also noticed this and have been investigating secretly, trying to find out which gang or villain is responsible for these heinous acts. But why would the barbarian court care about such a thing?”

Old Qiu said grimly, “If they truly cared, they wouldn’t be carrying out such large-scale construction projects in the central plains. The people are already suffering due to the wealthy landowners seizing their lands and abusing them. Now, they’re being conscripted for forced labor. Every canal built by the barbarian court is paved with countless lives.”

Lu Tong said softly, “The people in the central plains are truly suffering. Even in the remote West Shu Province, many common people are struggling to survive, let alone those who have lost their homes and families. Fleeing offers little hope, but staying is a death sentence.

“And yet, that barbarian emperor and his chancellor are still talking about ‘Jin-Xia Family Harmony.’”

Old Qiu sighed, “In the eyes of the barbarian court, the common people, without power or influence, are not even considered human. Their lives are worthless. This so-called ‘Jin-Xia Family Harmony’ is just a way to win over the local gentry and the treacherous sects in the martial world. Ultimately, their goal is to ‘use the Chinese against the Chinese.’”

Lu Tong said angrily, “It’s a pity there are so many treacherous villains in the martial world! Especially the Chongxian Sect, rising to power with the support of the barbarian court and suppressing the entire Central Plains martial world.”

Shi Hao pondered for a moment and suddenly said, “I need you to do me a favor.”

  • I, The Man Who’ll Conquer Both the Immortal Venerable and the Demon Empress 18

    Chapter 18: Yue Ya’er

The girl in the flower dress stepped into the stone pavilion, the flower-patterned whip around her waist swaying like a playful tail along with her pleated skirt.

She smiled, “I just arrived and heard you were here, Sister Li Tong, so I came to see you.”

Shi Hao stood up, “Since the County Mistress has a distinguished guest, I’ll take my leave.”

County Mistress Li Tong hesitated, “But…”

The girl in the flower dress waved her hand, “No need, no need! You continue your gathering. I don’t want to interrupt.”

She smiled brightly, “Sister Li Tong, which family is this young master from? Are you two having a secret rendezvous in the back garden?”

County Mistress Li Tong chuckled, “If it were a secret rendezvous, would it be so easy for you to find us? This is Young Master Shi Hao, the young master of Small Han Mountain City.”

The girl in the flower dress suddenly realized, “So he’s the Shi Hao who displayed such impressive skills on Red Mountain the other day and saved you, Sister Li Tong? I heard about it on my way here. Hee hee, Sister Li Tong, a hero saving a beauty. Is this little banquet a prelude to pledging yourself to him?”

County Mistress Li Tong blushed and said playfully, “You’ve been reading too many romance stories.”

Shi Hao attempted to excuse himself again. The girl in the flower dress, however, grabbed his arm, “Sit, sit, sit! Don’t let me interrupt your romantic moment. I was just passing by and wanted to join the fun.”

County Mistress Li Tong looked at Shi Hao and said, “Please sit, Young Master Shi. Don’t mind her.”

The girl in the flower dress said, “Yes, yes, yes, don’t mind me! Just mind her.”

The three of them sat down again, and a maidservant brought tableware for the girl in the flower dress.

County Mistress Li Tong looked at the group of martial artists guarding the garden gate and said, “Sister Yue, are those the Thunderclap Eighteen Riders from your brother’s entourage?

“I heard these eighteen riders are elite warriors chosen by your brother from among the royal clan, each riding an Yingzhao beast. Why did you bring them here? Is your brother also in Jin Prefecture?”

The girl in the flower dress pouted, “He doesn’t have time to come. He’s been having a headache dealing with those foolish Daoists from Ming Kun Monastery. It was just a secret experiment, but somehow the news leaked out and attracted that female thief. Now he has to rush back to the capital to explain why he kept such an important experiment from the court.”

County Mistress Li Tong asked, puzzled, “Experiment?”

The girl in the flower dress waved her hand dismissively, “Let’s not talk about that. My visit to Jin Prefecture has nothing to do with those matters. I’m here to supervise a Six Gates investigation. My brother was supposed to come himself, but he had to return to the capital, so he entrusted the task to me.

“Otherwise, he wouldn’t be so kind as to let me bring the Thunderclap Eighteen Riders.”

County Mistress Li Tong asked in surprise, “What kind of case requires you to personally supervise the investigation, Sister Yue?”

The girl in the flower dress lowered her voice, “It’s about the recent surge in children being stolen or abducted from refugees fleeing the central plains. Although the court doesn’t seem to care much, the numbers are alarming. The closer to Jin Prefecture, the more frequent these incidents become.

“Although my brother ordered the local Six Gates to step up their investigation, those useless fools haven’t found any clues so far. He was going to come and see for himself, but now he has to rush back to the capital, so he sent me instead.

“I can’t really do much, but my presence here will put some pressure on those Six Gates slackers.”

County Mistress Li Tong hesitated and said softly, “Perhaps I shouldn’t say this, but the current influx of refugees from the central plains is supposedly due to the court’s reconstruction of the Grand Canal. They’ve conscripted a large number of laborers, and many people have died from the harsh labor. That’s why they’re fleeing with their families.

“As long as the construction of the Grand Canal continues, these incidents are unavoidable, aren’t they?”

The girl in the flower dress tilted her head, “I don’t understand these things either. My brother also advised the Chancellor that although the Grand Canal will benefit future generations, it shouldn’t be built at this time. But the Chancellor told him to stay out of it. My brother told me secretly that there’s probably more to the Grand Canal project than meets the eye.”

She covered her mouth with both hands, “Oops, I shouldn’t have said that.” She stuck out her tongue.

She looked around, “By the way, isn’t Sister Yuejiao here?”

County Mistress Li Tong said, “Senior Sister is at Ming Kun Monastery.”

The girl in the flower dress shook her head again, “Those foolish Daoists from Ming Kun Monastery have really caused my family a lot of trouble this time.”

After a few more drinks, she stood up and said with a smile, “I won’t disturb your secret rendezvous in the back garden any longer. I have things to do. Hee hee.”

County Mistress Li Tong blushed, “Sister Yue, you’re talking nonsense again.”

The girl in the flower dress had already left like a gust of wind, the eighteen barbarian warriors following her out of the garden.

Shi Hao asked softly, “Who is that young lady, County Mistress?”

County Mistress Li Tong said helplessly, “That’s the daughter of the Yue Ke Tai family. The Yue Ke Tai family was one of the first royal families to intermarry with the Chinese. Both her and her brother’s mothers are Chinese. Although her surname is Yue Ke Tai, she goes by Yue and is called Yue Ya’er.”

Shi Hao suddenly understood, thinking, as expected of the Yue Ke Tai clan.

The muffled sounds of seductive music drifted faintly from above.

Du Yuejiao, now moved to the rack, had her arms spread and tied to the horizontal beam, her legs forced into a kneeling position by the angled wooden bar beneath them.

A finger pressed against her body, the force flowing through her meridians, unblocking the Jade Pillow acupoint.

She slowly regained consciousness, a face suddenly appearing before her eyes. The slightly hooked nose, not particularly prominent before, now seemed terrifying.

She instinctively struggled against the restraints, but it was futile.

She wore only a thin garment that barely covered her body.

Her delicate skin was flawless, except for a fresh, bloody cut on her thigh.

“Miss Du, I hope you won’t waste any more of our time,” the young man with the hooked nose said slowly, “I don’t need much information. Just tell me what I want to know, and I’ll let you go immediately.”

His tone was sincere, but how could she simply trust him?

She knew that she was only alive because he still needed information from her.

And even if she didn’t consider that, she would never compromise with such a villain.

“It seems you’re still quite resilient,” the young man with the hooked nose said, seemingly unconcerned, even slightly amused.

He grabbed her with his left hand and raised his right hand, extending a finger, its tip flickering with flames.

The small flame, although weak, filled her with terror. She thrashed against the restraints, her eyes wide with fear.

His finger touched her body, and she screamed. She writhed like a snake, the horizontal beam shaking with her struggles, the entire rack creaking and groaning.

There were no new wounds on her body, but the technique he used to dislocate her joints and tear her muscles was more terrifying than whips or branding irons.

Her flesh felt like it was being pulled and twisted, her arms and legs contorted.

Her screams echoed through the lavish underground cell, muffled by the noise from above.

The young man with the hooked nose stepped back, watching coldly.

He was increasingly impressed by the Severing Meridian Burning Heart Finger. Used skillfully, this demonic technique could achieve a variety of effects.

He knew that fear had taken root in her heart. After a night of torture, he didn’t believe she could hold out much longer.

He recalled Yue Ya’er’s words from that afternoon.

The Yue Ke Tai clan had to answer to the court for conducting a secret experiment.

If Yue Ya’er was referring to the God-Sealing Experiment, what kind of experiment was it that even a “royal” family like the Yue Ke Tai clan had to explain to the court?

It seemed Dark Thunder’s information was accurate. This mysterious experiment was indeed a significant matter.

Shi Hao could tell that the “Eighteen Riders” Yue Ya’er had brought with her, even into the Marquis’ residence gardens, were no ordinary guards.

Each of them was an elite warrior. It would be nearly impossible to target Yue Ya’er under their protection.

Du Yuejiao was his only chance to obtain information about the God-Sealing Experiment.

His heart remained cold as he watched the girl scream and struggle on the rack, the cut on her thigh reopening and bleeding with her movements.

He watched her throughout the night, occasionally adding a few more touches with his finger.

He knew the agonizing pain of this torture. Before last night, he had foolishly tested it on himself, the pain making him want to bash his head against the wall.

There were no visible wounds, but his meridians twisted and contorted. This pain was far worse than any cuts or whips.

Initially, the girl tried to suppress her screams, but eventually, she could no longer hold back.

He continued until late into the night, then stopped, crouching before her and grabbing her hair.

He said coldly, “It’s about time you talked, Miss Du. I’ll say it again, just tell me what I want to know, and I’ll let you go.”

The girl gasped for breath but said nothing.

She was more resilient than he had expected.

He realized that, at least for tonight, his efforts had been in vain.

Although slightly surprised, he wasn’t worried…

The next morning, after returning to his residence, Shi Hao hadn’t rested long when a carriage stopped outside.

This time, it was Deng Liang, the young guild master of the Yuan Rong Merchant Guild, along with some of his friends, coming to find him.

Having nothing else to do, Shi Hao joined them for a stroll around the city. At noon, they went to a restaurant and drank quite a bit.

By now, the story of Shi Hao, the young master of Small Han Mountain City, saving the County Mistress on Red Mountain had spread throughout the city.

Especially within the circles of local landlords and gentry, although not particularly prominent, the story was widely known.

Shi Hao knew Deng Liang had been spreading the news.

Whether it was the royal clan, the Marquis’ residence, or the Six Gates, no one trusted each other.

Especially within the circles of landlords and gentry, they were even more aware of the underlying currents.

By letting everyone know that the young master of Small Han Mountain City had saved the County Mistress, the Marquis’ residence would have to show some restraint, and the Six Gates wouldn’t dare to act rashly… That was Deng Liang’s thinking.

Although Shi Hao didn’t want to attract too much attention, he knew Deng Liang was helping him.

“Brother Hao!” After a few drinks, Deng Liang pulled Shi Hao aside, “Tell me, who did you learn your martial arts from?”

Shi Hao smiled, “You won’t believe me even if I told you. It really was that old Daoist I met in the mountains.”

Deng Liang said, “Brother Hao, why are you hiding it even from me? I heard you practice Daoist internal energy cultivation. And I also heard that Daoist cultivation requires both internal and external elixirs. They say you’re eighth-rank, which means you’ve consumed at least two Daoist elixirs, the ninth and eighth ranks of the Nine Ranks Immortal Formula.

“That’s not something you can achieve by just learning from someone in the mountains.”

Shi Hao continued smiling, “You won’t believe me even if I tell you, so what can I do?”

They wouldn’t believe this explanation, and they would be even less likely to believe the truth.

Thinking back, the Holy Jade Immortal and the Enchanting Fire Witch were indeed terrifyingly powerful.

They had each given him a small portion of their foundational essence, and he had reached the eighth rank directly, bypassing the need to consume the ninth and eighth-rank elixirs.

If they hadn’t fought each other three hundred years ago, leading to their imprisonment in the Primordial Grotto Heaven, how could the barbarians have dominated China?

The others, now drunk, clamored to visit a brothel.

Deng Liang, his arm around Shi Hao’s shoulder, nudged him and tried to persuade him to join them.

Shi Hao smiled, “I’ll pass. I’m going back to rest.” He had a female prisoner to interrogate tonight; he didn’t have time for such frivolous pursuits.

After parting ways with them, Shi Hao walked back alone.

He thought to himself, “Two nights of dislocating her joints and tearing her muscles haven’t made her talk. Continuing with such methods probably won’t be effective.”

“Other physical injuries probably won’t work either. Since torture isn’t working, I might as well try some humiliation tactics and see how much she can withstand psychologically.”

He passed a market stall where a hunter from the mountains was selling medicinal wine, a bag containing a writhing snake beside him.

Shi Hao paused before the stall, lost in thought.

  • I, The Man Who’ll Conquer Both the Immortal Venerable and the Demon Empress 17

    Chapter 17: Don’t Disappoint Me

    —Magical Weapon: Earthly Valor Tiger

    —Divine Crystal: Earthly Valor Star

—Effect: Grants a divine body and divine power for a short period, multiplying physical strength and power. Limited to one use per day.

    —Remaining Uses: Four.

Back in his residence, Shi Hao examined the Earthly Valor Tiger again. As expected, the number of remaining uses had decreased by one.

Fortunately, he had relied on this magical weapon’s brute force; otherwise, capturing Du Yuejiao would have been much more difficult.

Putting away the Earthly Valor Tiger, he took out the jade pendant he had snatched from Du Yuejiao’s wrist.

The circular pendant, crystal clear, contained mysterious water patterns intertwined to form a special rune.

He examined it with his divine sense.

    —Magical Weapon: Moon Phase Ring

    —Divine Crystal: Yin Divergence Star

—Effect: Briefly distorts space, creating multiple layers of diamond-shaped spatial fragments.

    —Remaining Uses: Six.

Shi Hao thought to himself, “These divine crystal magical weapons can even distort space?”

He marveled at the power of these weapons. If he hadn’t also possessed a magical weapon, even if he had advanced to the seventh rank, he might have been killed instantly by such a technique if caught off guard.

    He looked out the window.

It was now evening, and no one had disturbed him all afternoon.

He didn’t think Ming Kun Monastery would connect Du Yuejiao’s disappearance to him.

After all, the traces of the fight clearly indicated a demonic cultivator using fire techniques, completely different from his style on Red Mountain.

Two days ago, someone had attempted to kidnap County Mistress Li Tong, and today, an attacker had abducted Du Yuejiao.

As long as Ming Kun Monastery wasn’t foolish, they would connect the two incidents and conclude that the attacker who took Du Yuejiao was working with the previous assailants.

And he, having saved Li Tong, was inadvertently cleared of suspicion.

Even so, he had remained in his residence all afternoon, occasionally appearing at the courtyard gate.

Since he had scaled the wall and entered using the Evil Shadow Disguise Technique around noon, even if someone investigated, they would easily conclude he hadn’t left the house.

He hadn’t noticed anyone surveilling him, and no one had come to inquire.

It seemed Ming Kun Monastery hadn’t revealed Du Yuejiao’s abduction.

This was only natural, unless Zhuo Mulan truly didn’t care about her disciple’s life.

As darkness deepened, the crescent moon rose.

Shi Hao buried the Moon Phase Ring under a tree in the courtyard, slipped over the wall, and changed his appearance using the Evil Shadow Disguise Technique.

The girl slowly regained consciousness amidst a hazy daze and unbearable, tearing pain.

Her hands were tied, and she was suspended from a wooden beam in a dark cell.

Her legs were spread apart, each ankle tied to a rope connected to an iron pillar.

The hem of her colorful Daoist robe had been cut open, revealing her grey trousers.

As she woke up, she instinctively struggled, trying to free herself from the restraints.

However, several major acupoints along her meridians were blocked by a mysterious demonic energy, her dantian completely sealed, preventing her from using her internal energy.

If she were an ordinary martial artist, even with her meridians blocked, she would still possess considerable strength.

However, Daoist cultivators focused on internal elixir cultivation and didn’t train their physical bodies.

Although they appeared ethereal and didn’t have to worry about their figures becoming muscular from martial arts training, at this moment, unable to use her internal energy, she was no different from an ordinary girl.

She tried to remain calm. She didn’t know where she was. Faint music drifted down from above, a soft, seductive melody amidst the muffled sounds.

This was a prison cell, at least on the surface.

Various torture instruments lined the left wall: a wooden horse for restraining a person face down with their limbs tied to its legs, a rack for spreading a person’s limbs in a “大” shape, whips, candles, ropes, a furnace, branding irons, and more.

But strangely, red curtains draped from above, and on the right side was a luxurious bed with a dressing table beside it.

Despite the torture instruments, the entire cell, with its overall color scheme, had a strangely elegant, almost bridal chamber-like atmosphere.

Du Yuejiao couldn’t understand why a prison cell, clearly designed for interrogation and torture, would be decorated so lavishly.

She continued looking to the right and suddenly froze, struggling against her restraints.

In the right corner, the villain with the hooked nose sat calmly on a red sandalwood chair, watching her wake up and struggle.

“Miss Du!” The villain casually crossed his left leg over his right, gently swinging his foot.

His voice was cold and emotionless, “There’s no animosity between us, and I don’t want to make things difficult for you. I just need you to answer one question. If you answer, I’ll let you go and won’t harm you.”

He paused, and his voice, like a blade scraping against a whetstone, continued, “Otherwise, I have plenty of tools, and plenty of time. You’re a beautiful and virtuous young lady, a precious daughter. Why suffer such torment in this place?”

Du Yuejiao spat angrily, “I won’t tell you anything, no matter what you ask. Let me go! The Chongxian Sect won’t let you get away with this!”

Ignoring her desperate outburst, the young man stood up and approached her, his shadow stretching across the floor towards her.

He stopped before her, grabbed her chin, and smiled, his expression even more sinister and menacing, “I understand that your Ming Kun Monastery is conducting a certain experiment with the Yue Ke Tai clan, a prominent barbarian family. This experiment is called ‘God-Sealing.’

“I just need you to tell me what kind of experiment it is, and what conclusions you have reached.”

He slightly loosened his grip on her chin.

“Ptoo!” The girl tried to spit in his face, but he easily dodged it.

“It seems you’re unwilling to cooperate,” the young man said, reaching for the intricately tied sash around her waist.

“What are you doing? Let me go!” the girl shouted, her voice echoing through the cell.

“Even if you scream your lungs out, it’s useless,” the young man whispered in her ear, sneering. “Don’t worry, I’m not particularly interested in your precious body. But to encourage your cooperation, let’s play a game.

“Starting tonight, I will torture you. For every night you refuse to talk, I’ll carve a mark on your thigh. Let’s see how many marks it takes before you tell me what I want to know.

    “Don’t disappoint me, Miss Du.”

He untied the sash. The girl’s sharp, terrified scream echoed through the cell, “Let me go!”

The next morning, Shi Hao returned to his residence, took a cold bath, and sat cross-legged in the courtyard, cultivating his internal energy.

His actions last night made him feel like a villain.

But he had to force himself to continue, his resolve unwavering.

He had to find out what this “God-Sealing Experiment” was.

According to the information from Dark Thunder, this experiment could potentially reshape the martial world, giving the barbarian court and the Chongxian Sect true control.

And deep down, the very name “God-Sealing” filled him with unease.

A light rain began to fall, bringing a touch of moisture to the courtyard.

Circulating both the Immortal Ice Technique and the Mysterious Charm Technique within him, Shi Hao felt a significant improvement in his power.

Yesterday’s fight with Du Yuejiao had greatly benefited his Mysterious Charm Technique.

And as the Mysterious Charm Technique improved, his Immortal Ice Technique also seemed to be stimulated, its power increasing in response, rising in tandem with the demonic art.

Cultivation was supposed to be a long and arduous process, requiring unwavering determination and constant effort.

Even without visible progress, one had to persevere, rain or shine, never giving up.

His rapid progress, feeling the increase in power almost constantly, was unusual.

Many people gave up on cultivation because they couldn’t experience this immediate “feedback.”

They trained diligently but felt no improvement. Over time, they began to doubt their abilities, leading to frustration and ultimately, giving up.

After all, cultivation was often a tedious and monotonous process.

Shi Hao’s experience was completely different. He didn’t know if it was because he was cultivating both Daoist and demonic arts simultaneously.

At noon, after having lunch, he went out for a stroll in the market.

As he returned to his residence, a luxurious carriage arrived. A steward from the Marquis’ residence invited him to the mansion.

Shi Hao naturally didn’t refuse the invitation. Or rather, with Small Han Mountain City’s status, he didn’t have the “right” to refuse.

However, the Marquis’ residence had sent a luxurious carriage to pick him up, instead of simply sending a messenger.

This was considered a sign of “respect” from the Marquis’ residence.

Shi Hao boarded the carriage, which traveled down the wide, official road, lined with willow trees, a road forbidden to ordinary people.

The carriage arrived at the Marquis’ residence, but instead of stopping at the main gate, it entered through a side gate.

After reaching the inner gardens, Shi Hao disembarked, and two maidservants greeted him.

He followed them into the garden, arriving at a pavilion over the lake.

County Mistress Li Tong, dressed in a green skirt, sat inside the pavilion and called out softly, “Master Shi!”

Shi Hao bowed, “Greetings, County Mistress.”

County Mistress Li Tong returned the gesture, her voice gentle, “There’s no need for such formalities, Master Shi. You are my savior. I have prepared a small banquet today to express my gratitude for saving my life on Red Mountain. Please, have a seat.”

Shi Hao said, “You’re too kind, County Mistress. I wouldn’t dare trouble you.”

County Mistress Li Tong smiled, “How can a small banquet repay the debt of saving my life? Please!”

Shi Hao entered the pavilion and sat down, looking around. The scenery was beautiful, with the lake shimmering in the distance.

Maidservants brought food and wine, but there were no guards in sight.

Shi Hao quickly assessed the situation. On the one hand, he knew the Marquis’ residence must have investigated Small Han Mountain City but hadn’t found anything suspicious… which was only natural.

After all, before this, he, the young master of Small Han Mountain City, had rarely left.

There was nothing unusual about his life so far, and Small Han Mountain City wasn’t a martial arts sect.

If they had found anything suspicious, even if County Mistress Li Tong wanted to hold a banquet for him in the Marquis’ residence gardens, the Marquis wouldn’t have allowed it.

On the other hand, County Mistress Li Tong probably didn’t know about Du Yuejiao’s disappearance yet.

The food and wine were served, and a maidservant poured him wine. County Mistress Li Tong raised her cup and said apologetically, “That day on Red Mountain, although you were present at the banquet, I didn’t attend to you properly. Please forgive me.”

Shi Hao said, “I’m just a simple man from the mountains. There’s no need for you to worry, County Mistress.”

They drank a few cups. County Mistress Li Tong’s eyes sparkled, and she said cheerfully, “I heard you were just a scholar, but you’ve hidden your martial arts skills well. It’s a good thing you did, otherwise I would have been in real trouble.”

Shi Hao smiled, “I am indeed a scholar. My martial arts training was just a chance encounter with a skilled master, a mere…” He suddenly turned his head.

A gust of wind swept through the garden gate.

More than a dozen tall, burly figures, clearly trained in external martial arts, entered in two rows, quickly taking positions that subtly surrounded the pavilion.

Shi Hao gripped his cup, his expression changing slightly.

He quickly turned back, his gaze fixed on County Mistress Li Tong’s neck, almost ready to strike and restrain her.

But she also looked surprised and asked a maidservant, “Who are those people?”

A giggle echoed, “Sister Li Tong, I’ve come to see you.”

Shi Hao looked over and saw a girl wearing a garland of flowers and a pleated dress, a flower-patterned whip around her waist.

She was delicate and petite, her laughter like tinkling bells as she floated in like a gentle breeze.

Since the Jin clan’s invasion, influenced by Chinese culture, most Jin girls wore similar clothing to Chinese girls, either wrap-around robes or jackets and skirts.

This girl, however, with flowers in her hair, flower ornaments all over her body, and a flower-patterned woolen dress, looked like a flower herself.

For a Jin girl, this attire was more “retro” than “traditional.”

As the flower-clad girl approached, County Mistress Li Tong hurriedly stood up, not daring to show any disrespect, “Sister Yue, when did you arrive in Jin Prefecture?”

Although she addressed her as “sister,” she quickly descended the pavilion steps to greet her.

  • I, The Man Who’ll Conquer Both the Immortal Venerable and the Demon Empress 16

    Chapter 16: Capture

With a resounding clang, the kitchen knife and sword clashed. The knife scraped against the side of the sword, sending sparks flying and flames swirling.

The girl’s colorful skirt swirled around her as she spun, her sword flashing, deflecting the incoming flames.

A wave of chilling sword energy surged towards the young man once more.

His body was abruptly “pulled” away, flickering behind her like a ghost.

Du Yuejiao was inwardly surprised by his bizarre footwork.

However, it wasn’t unusual for a demonic cultivator to possess a few strange techniques.

Just like Du Yuejiao herself, she had some unique secret techniques passed down within her sect.

She moved her feet in the Nine Palaces formation, twisting her waist subtly to avoid the blade coming from behind.

Her spinning sword created a perfect circle, deflecting and counterattacking in a single fluid motion.

With the third strike, the tip of her sword aimed directly at the young man’s throat.

This was the “Three Talents Sword Technique” she had learned from her sect after advancing to the eighth rank.

Earth, Man, and Heaven, three consecutive sword strikes, from low to high, each carrying a distinct sword intent.

Another clang echoed as the kitchen knife intercepted her sword from the side, followed by a series of clashing sounds.

Shi Hao’s footwork was unpredictable, swaying and staggering like a drunkard, seemingly without any pattern.

Yet, he was constantly being drawn towards Du Yuejiao, as if by invisible strings.

His illogical footwork forced Du Yuejiao to retreat continuously, barely holding her ground with the tightly woven Three Talents Sword Technique.

She retreated in the Nine Palaces formation, stepping back into the forest.

Her sword flashed, and with crackling sounds, bark flew and branches snapped.

She quickly realized that the young man had used his strange movements to force her into the forest.

Her sword was long, his knife short. The dense forest favored his attacks.

Du Yuejiao snorted, deflected the kitchen knife with her sword, and with a flick of her left wrist, unleashed a flurry of palm strikes towards the young man’s chest.

Shi Hao also extended his left hand, using the Severing Meridian Burning Heart Finger to counterattack.

They circled a tree, their bodies spinning.

After a series of clashes and explosions, the girl’s body flew upwards, landing upside down on a branch. With a flick of her wrist, several invisible sword energies shot towards Shi Hao’s vital points.

This girl’s strength was indeed far superior to the Rat and Bat Duo, Zhao Haisong, and the others.

The kitchen knife flew from his hand, passing through the invisible sword energies. He leaped into the air as the girl also flew off the branch.

The branch snapped with a crack.

The young man flashed behind the girl, caught the kitchen knife, and unleashed a series of slashes.

Arching her back, the girl dodged the attacks, her toes tapping a stone, sending it flying.

Spinning, she swung her arm, her sword tracing a circle, aiming for the young man’s chest, intending to disembowel him.

The stone struck a tree, splitting it open.

Sparks flew as the kitchen knife deflected the sword, carrying the young man’s body with it.

In the next instant, the kitchen knife spun above Du Yuejiao’s head, disrupting her footing.

The blade sliced down, taking a few strands of her black hair with it.

The severed hair, illuminated by the sunlight filtering through the leaves, gleamed white, followed by a piece of her robe.

With a ripping sound, Du Yuejiao tumbled with her sword, her appearance now disheveled.

As she jumped up, the hem of her skirt was sliced open, revealing her grey trousers.

“Be careful, Miss,” the young man with the hooked nose said with a sinister chuckle, “Wouldn’t want to get cut and ruin your chances of marriage.”

Without pause, the kitchen knife, engulfed in demonic flames, danced around the girl, its blade flashing before and behind her.

Her sword was restricted by the trees, and she was in a precarious situation.

The young man’s tone was lewd, but his movements were calculated, attempting to disrupt her focus and cloud her judgment.

He was succeeding, pushing her further and further into a disadvantageous position.

So far, he had been successful. At this rate, she would inevitably fall into his hands, with no escape.

However, Du Yuejiao snorted disdainfully, a look of confidence on her face.

She reached into her sleeve and pulled out a circular jade pendant. She spun it, and a divine light spread outwards.

Suddenly, Shi Hao saw illusions of her everywhere, unable to distinguish the real one from the fakes.

    No, every illusion was real.

He could clearly sense her energy flow everywhere.

Space shattered around him, fragments and pieces recombining.

He was trapped within a mysterious illusion, the girl’s figure attacking him from all angles.

Shi Hao was forced to roll on the ground, his kitchen knife held defensively.

Sword lights from all directions crossed above him.

He was struck in the back, his clothes torn, blood spurting out.

The girl’s triumphant laughter echoed around him, “Be careful now. If the cut is deep enough, you’ll die.”

As Shi Hao rolled beneath a tree, his body suddenly grew larger.

More sword strikes landed on him, but he remained unharmed. He grabbed the tree and, with a mighty heave, ripped it from the ground.

    —Magical Weapon: Earthly Valor Tiger

—Effect: Grants a divine body and divine power for a short period, multiplying physical strength and power. Limited to one use per day.

Now twice his normal size, Shi Hao’s body was protected by the divine form.

The sword strikes, although shaving off parts of his divine form, couldn’t injure him.

Wielding the tree as a weapon, flames coursed along its bark, sweeping outwards in all directions.

He saw the tree and the flames reflected in the shattered space, everywhere he looked.

Protected by the divine form, he attacked relentlessly, using his enhanced strength to uproot trees, sending dust and debris flying.

The girl’s figure, although appearing everywhere in the shattered space, was now on the defensive.

Suddenly, her illusions converged, and her sword light intensified, like flashes of lightning, slicing through the incoming tree trunk.

Each strike was like a thunderbolt, carrying a silvery, moon-like glow. This was clearly her hidden, decisive sword technique.

Beads of sweat appeared on her forehead, the exertion taking its toll.

Shi Hao, in his massive form, uprooted another tree. This time, he focused on a single direction, charging forward like a bull.

Although he charged in one direction, the tree trunk, refracted in the shattered space, seemed to attack the girl’s scattered illusions from all sides.

Crack! The panting girl struck the tree trunk with her sword, the blade embedding itself deeply, but this time, she couldn’t slice through it.

The tree trunk, with her sword stuck in it, was flung aside. The massive divine form, like a descending mountain, loomed over her.

A powerful fist, carrying a fierce wind, slammed down.

The girl was struck in the chest and abdomen, her body arching as she flew backwards like a shrimp.

Terror filled her eyes. Fighting back the pain, she tried to escape.

Fingers pressed against her body, and she felt a scorching aura coursing through her meridians, sealing her acupoints.

She stumbled, and the bear-like figure grabbed her, holding her tightly as he ran through the forest.

“Let me go!” the girl struggled, pounding his arm with her fists, anger, fear, and helplessness mixing within her.

The scorching demonic energy flowed through her meridians, inch by inch.

Gradually, she lost herself in the unbearable heat and the unyielding grip, losing consciousness.

Just half an hour later, a cart loaded with charcoal slowly entered the city gates of Jin Prefecture.

The guards recognized the old charcoal seller who passed through every day and, after a cursory inspection, let him in.

Inside a hidden compartment beneath the charcoal, a limp body swayed gently with the movement of the cart—

“Yuejiao? Yuejiao?” Zhuo Mulan called out to her disciple as she entered the valley.

It was evening. Surrounded by mountains, the setting sun cast long shadows across the valley floor.

Zhuo Mulan knew her disciple came here every morning to practice her swordsmanship, usually returning to the monastery by midday.

Du Yuejiao always meticulously followed her daily routine, diligently practicing her swordsmanship and completing her lessons, never slacking off.

But today, she hadn’t returned by midday, nor had she appeared all afternoon.

A sense of foreboding gripped Zhuo Mulan, prompting her to come here.

She suddenly narrowed her eyes and flickered forward.

In a section of the forest, she saw broken branches, scattered leaves, and scorched earth.

Several trees had been uprooted, some charred by fire, some broken into pieces.

The clean breaks on the tree trunks were clearly from her disciple’s secret killing move, the “Moon Wheel Slash.”

She even found her disciple’s sword embedded in a tree trunk, halfway through a cut.

She searched the area but couldn’t find her disciple’s body.

After calling out a few more times, her anxiety growing, she hurriedly left the forest.

Soon, numerous Daoists arrived, searching the quiet forest under Zhuo Mulan’s direction.

“This place is so secluded. Who would come here to attack Nephew Yuejiao?” a Daoist holding a horsetail whisk frowned.

This was Daoist Song Cui, the abbot of Ming Kun Monastery, a tall, thin man with a high forehead and narrow face, resembling a bamboo pole.

“Yuejiao has no enemies. Why would anyone target her?” Zhuo Mulan’s face was filled with worry. “And her strength surpasses that of many martial artists. She also has the ‘Moon Phase Ring’ magical weapon. Whoever captured her is no ordinary person.”

“The attacker must be at least eighth-rank… or even seventh-rank!” Daoist Song Cui looked at the scorched ground, sensing the residual energy, “This person must be a demonic cultivator, possessing the rare ability to transform vital energy into fire. And looking at these uprooted trees, such strength is extraordinary. This person is either a supernatural ability user or possesses a magical weapon, most likely an Earthly Fiend weapon that enhances physical strength.”

Zhuo Mulan said urgently, “Brother, quickly send someone to inform the Marquis and the Six Gates. We must rescue Yuejiao no matter what. She’s a young woman, alone in the enemy’s hands. If we delay any longer, I fear… I fear…”

Daoist Song Cui said solemnly, “We can’t.”

Zhuo Mulan said angrily, “Why not? Saving her is our priority…”

Daoist Song Cui shook his head, “The theft of those documents hasn’t been resolved yet. If news of a disciple being captured spreads, it will damage Ming Kun Monastery’s reputation.

“And since the attacker dared to capture her, even the Six Gates might not be able to find her.”

Zhuo Mulan exclaimed, “Are we just going to do nothing?”

Daoist Song Cui lowered his voice, “Junior Sister Zhuo, there’s no use panicking. Think about it, the attacker didn’t kill her but captured her. He probably wants to make a deal with us.

“If you inform the Six Gates and they launch a citywide search, what if it forces the attacker to silence her…”

    Zhuo Mulan’s expression changed.

Daoist Song Cui paced back and forth, “As for who Nephew Yuejiao might have offended recently… I heard that after returning yesterday, she seemed to have a strong prejudice against the young master of Small Han Mountain City…”

Zhuo Mulan shook her head, “It can’t be Shi Hao. I saw him fight. He practices pure Daoist internal arts, his energy carrying the aura of profound ice. The attacker here clearly practices demonic arts, his energy carrying the aura of fire. These are completely different cultivation methods. No one has ever been able to cultivate both Daoist and demonic arts simultaneously.

“Besides, he risked his life to save Li Tong just the other day, showing goodwill towards both the Marquis’ residence and our Ming Kun Monastery. There’s no reason for him to target Yuejiao today.”

Daoist Song Cui, finding her reasoning sound, dismissed the thought of Shi Hao and frowned, “In that case… the attacker is probably also after the God-Sealing Experiment.”

Zhuo Mulan looked up, “But the details of the experiment have already been leaked…”

Daoist Song Cui said coldly, “Precisely because it has been leaked, we overlooked this possibility. The attacker today is working with those who appeared on Red Mountain yesterday, but they’re not connected to the female thief who stole the documents.”

Zhuo Mulan’s expression changed, “Li Tong doesn’t know about the God-Sealing Experiment, but Yuejiao does.”

Daoist Song Cui sighed, “We can only secretly investigate for now, keeping this matter quiet, even from County Mistress Li Tong. And Senior Brother Lan Ke has gone to report to the Yue Ke Tai family. Since he’s not here, there’s no need to inform him. We’ll tell him when he returns in a few days.

“If Yuejiao is smart and refuses to yield, she might have a chance to survive. If the attacker can’t get any information from her, he might contact us.

“But if she’s forced to reveal everything and is no longer useful to them, I fear…”

Thinking of the misfortune that might befall her beautiful disciple, Zhuo Mulan clenched her trembling fists, helpless.

She couldn’t bear to imagine what those villains might do to her disciple.

The thought of the horrors Du Yuejiao might face filled her with anguish.
