    Chapter 85: A Street Robbery

Shi Hao knew that the Brocade Dragon Gate’s proposal for Floating Cloud Monastery to join them came right after he had helped defend the monastery.

Li Jingya, worried he might think they were taking advantage of the situation, had quickly explained.

However, this was a decision for Floating Cloud Monastery to make; he wasn’t going to interfere.

He and Xu Xiaoyan followed Li Jingya to the main hall.

Inside, Chen Chenyun and another young man, Li Jingya’s husband, Zhao Wencheng, were sitting at a table, discussing the matter.

Zhao Wencheng said to Chen Chenyun, “Floating Cloud Monastery doesn’t have to formally join the Brocade Dragon Gate. The Mid-Autumn Festival is just over forty days away. Every year, the prominent families in Dàxīng City contribute funds, and the Brocade Dragon Gate organizes the lantern festival. And to ensure the smooth operation of the festival, we invite various sects and organizations to assist.

“Floating Cloud Monastery can simply join the alliance temporarily, in the name of co-organizing the Mid-Autumn Festival. These are turbulent times, and we hope the smaller sects in Dàxīng City can support each other.”

Chen Chenyun said readily, “In that case, we’ll gladly accept your offer.”

Li Jingya and the others approached, and introductions were made.

Chen Chenyun explained to Shi Hao, “Floating Cloud Monastery, like some other sects, will temporarily join the Brocade Dragon Gate as an alliance. The Brocade Dragon Gate is different from the other gangs in Dàxīng City. They’re not a martial arts sect, so there’s less to worry about.”

Shi Hao smiled, “It’s your decision, Abbot.”

Li Jingya pulled Xu Xiaoyan aside and whispered something to her.

Xu Xiaoyan smiled, “Let me ask him.” She waved Shi Hao over.

He approached and whispered, “What is it?”

Xu Xiaoyan said, “Sister Jing Ya wants to hire us to protect her husband. She said Dàxīng City is becoming increasingly dangerous. Recently, the accountant of the Heaven and Earth Gang’s Flood Dragon Branch was assassinated. Although the Brocade Dragon Gate doesn’t usually get involved in conflicts, she’s still worried.

“Her husband is just a scholar with no martial arts skills. Although the Brocade Dragon Gate has assigned guards to protect them, they’re not as skilled as you. So, she wants to hire us to protect her husband, mainly during his travels to and from work. He’ll have other guards at the Brocade Dragon Gate’s headquarters and at home.”

Shi Hao thought for a moment and said, “What do you think?”

Xu Xiaoyan sighed softly, “Sister Jing Ya was very kind to me when I was in Jiangzhe. I want to help her, but you’re the expert here. I need your opinion.”

Shi Hao smiled, “That’s easy. Floating Cloud Monastery is also a martial arts school. They can hire us as guards through the monastery. But even between sisters, we should be clear about the terms. The payment must be substantial.”

Xu Xiaoyan giggled, “Don’t worry, you’ll be well-compensated. They can afford it.”

She went and discussed the matter with them. Zhao Wencheng and Li Jingya were delighted. With the growing unrest in Dàxīng City, everyone felt unsafe. Having Chongyun as their protector brought them peace of mind.

They agreed on a price, and a contract was drawn up between the couple and Floating Cloud Monastery, with the monastery taking a twenty percent commission.

Chen Chenyun didn’t want to take the commission, but Shi Hao insisted. Since they were acting in the name of Floating Cloud Monastery, it was only right for the monastery to receive a share, and twenty percent wasn’t excessive.

Shi Hao returned to the west wing, leaving the Heroic Deeds Blade and the Illusory Sea Spirit Fruit there, taking only his sword.

He and Xu Xiaoyan, both dressed in Daoist robes, left the monastery with Zhao Wencheng and Li Jingya. A group of Brocade Dragon Gate guards awaited them at the foot of Rong Mountain.

The couple boarded a palanquin, while Shi Hao and Xu Xiaoyan were given horses.

Shi Hao noticed that Xu Xiaoyan had changed her hairstyle again. She now wore a Daoist bun with a hairpin and bangs, although without any disguise, she looked completely different.

Unless someone knew her well, they wouldn’t recognize her.

Shi Hao smiled, “You’re really good at transforming yourself. You look like a different person every time I see you.”

Xu Xiaoyan glanced at him and pouted, “It’s better to be cautious. How do I look?”

Shi Hao rode closer to her and whispered, “I think you looked prettier as ‘Night Lily.’”

Xu Xiaoyan said, “You’re asking for a beating!” She playfully punched his arm.

A horse neighed from a side street as a carriage suddenly appeared, blocking their path, logs rolling down from its roof.

Shi Hao and Xu Xiaoyan pulled back on their reins, their horses rearing up. A surge of energy erupted from the carriage.

Realizing they were under attack, they leaped from their horses. Chaos erupted in the street, the palanquin carriers scattering.

Several Brocade Dragon Gate guards were sent flying.

Although they had been hired as bodyguards, they hadn’t expected trouble so soon.

They leaped forward and saw the palanquin splintering, Li Jingya screaming, “Husband!”

Two burly men grabbed Zhao Wencheng and leaped onto a rooftop.

As the palanquin tilted precariously, Xu Xiaoyan flashed forward and pulled Li Jingya out. Shi Hao pursued the attackers. Two more men appeared on the roof, each armed with a bow, firing two arrows at Shi Hao’s chest.

Shi Hao raised his sword, deflecting both arrows with a clang, but the force of the impact sent him stumbling backwards.

The two men on the roof glanced at him, surprised, then flipped backwards and disappeared.

“Husband…” Li Jingya, supported by Xu Xiaoyan, knelt on the ground, reaching out with one hand, her voice a desperate cry.

Shi Hao saw four Yingzhao beasts take flight, carrying the four men and Zhao Wencheng away.

Shi Hao’s heart sank. He recognized those men. Zhao Wencheng, a mere scholar, if he even survived, would likely be crippled.

“Take care of her!” Shi Hao shouted, leaping onto the roof, using his light-foot skills to pursue the fleeing figures.

He saw the four riders flying low, rounding a tall building and heading towards the distant mountains.

Shi Hao gave chase, his feet barely touching the walls, rooftops, and eaves as he moved with incredible speed.

He followed them to the mountains, where they disappeared behind a ridge.

Not daring to hesitate, he increased his speed, crossed the foothills, and climbed the mountain, arriving at a luxurious estate. As he leaped onto the wall, countless arrows were aimed at him.

He froze, took a deep breath, and said, “Miss Yue, can we talk?”

A girl’s laughter came from within the estate, “Let him in.”

    The arrows disappeared.

Shi Hao jumped down from the wall and entered the estate.

He could sense numerous hidden experts. He passed through a gate and entered a garden with pavilions and ponds, an elegant and secluded place, like a miniature palace, maidservants coming and going.

A maidservant led him forward. A dozen or so barbarian warriors stood around a young woman in a beautiful pleated dress, sitting at a table, her legs crossed, a playful smile on her face.

    It was Yue Ya’er.

Shi Hao smiled, “I didn’t expect to find you here, Miss.”

Yue Ya’er said, “I ran into Sister Yuejiao a few days ago. She should be at the Chongxian Sect’s main temple on Mount Qian Yuan now. Have you seen her?”

Shi Hao said, “Not yet. Please don’t tell her about me. I have some things to do, and I don’t want her to worry.”

Yue Ya’er swung her legs, her colorful skirt fluttering around her. She smiled, “I heard you’re protecting the accountant of the Brocade Dragon Gate. Have you joined them?”

Shi Hao shook his head, “Not exactly. I’m just working as his bodyguard. May I ask how this… Mr. Zhao offended you, Miss, to warrant such treatment?”

Yue Ya’er shook her head, “He didn’t offend me. I just need to ask him a few questions.”

Shi Hao asked quickly, “Have you started the ‘questioning’ yet?” He remembered what had happened to the Shu Tiger Gang’s accountant.

Yue Ya’er said, “Don’t worry, don’t worry. I told them to stop when I heard you were looking for him.” She pointed to a nearby bench, “Have a seat.”

Shi Hao sat down, “May I ask what you want to know from Mr. Zhao?”

Yue Ya’er turned, resting her chin on her hand, her sleeve covering her arm, and looked at him, “Hmm, it’s a bit difficult to explain. Do you know about the demonic sects?”

Shi Hao said, “I haven’t had much contact with them, but I do know a little about them… actually, quite a lot.” He figured that if he claimed to be ignorant, she wouldn’t tell him anything.

Yue Ya’er sat up straight, her small figure now looking serious, and said, surprised, “You know about the demonic sects? You seem to know quite a bit.”

Shi Hao said thoughtfully, “But what does the Brocade Dragon Gate have to do with the demonic sects?”

Yue Ya’er shook her head, “Perhaps they’re connected, perhaps not. I’m not sure. But I suspect one of the three gangs and six societies in Dàxīng City is controlled by a demonic sect. I want to find out which one, but I don’t have much time.

“Your idea of capturing the Shu Tiger Gang’s accountant in Jin Prefecture was quite good. Even demonic sects need money, and there must be some kind of financial connection between them and the gangs they control, or some shady business dealings. So, I’m planning to capture their accountants and interrogate them one by one.”

“This Mr. Zhao is just unlucky enough to be the first.”

Chapter 84: Profound Mysteries, the Brocade Dragon Gate

Xu Xiaoyan sighed, “But Dàxīng City is becoming increasingly chaotic. Even if Floating Cloud Monastery survives this, I’m afraid there will be more trouble later.”

    Shi Hao asked, “What’s happening?”

Xu Xiaoyan said, “It’s not directly related to Floating Cloud Monastery, but the gangs in Dàxīng City are in turmoil, constantly fighting and vying for power. When the nest is overturned, no egg is left unbroken. Small sects like Floating Cloud Monastery are vulnerable in such times.”

Shi Hao pondered for a moment and nodded.

Xu Xiaoyan looked up at him, “You understand?”

Shi Hao said, “The entire country is changing. Many have lost faith in the barbarian court. In such times, these sects and families will start looking for ways to protect themselves. If the barbarian court collapses, whoever controls a fortified city like Dàxīng will have a significant advantage in the struggle for power.”

“Conflict is inevitable. The barbarian court wants to maintain control and stability in Dàxīng City. The Chongxian Sect wants to control the city for themselves. But the three gangs and six societies have their own ambitions. And other factions also want a piece of the pie.”

“Just as the cicada senses the coming autumn wind before the leaves even fall, Dàxīng City will likely become a microcosm of the coming chaos. Remaining neutral is impossible, and choosing the wrong side could mean destruction for your entire family.”

Xu Xiaoyan chuckled, “You’re quite perceptive. But for many martial artists, such chaos is an opportunity for fame and fortune. Life is cheap, after all.”

“What about you? What do you want in these turbulent times?”

Shi Hao said calmly, “My ambition is simple: to revitalize China and restore our people’s homeland.”

Xu Xiaoyan sighed, “That’s a lofty goal. Even if we expel the barbarians, restoring China won’t be easy. The Sheng Dynasty was the peak of our civilization, but don’t forget, it was preceded by centuries of chaos.”

Shi Hao looked up at the night sky. The waning moon was a thin crescent, and the stars were dim.

Xu Xiaoyan clasped her hands behind her head and smiled, “My ambition is much simpler. I just want to make lots of money and live a good life.”

Shi Hao looked down at her and smiled, “Is that so? If that were true, you wouldn’t have gotten involved in the God-Sealing Stones incident, wouldn’t have helped me deliver those pills. And you wouldn’t have helped me undermine Kou Deqiu, ensuring my victory.”

Xu Xiaoyan turned and walked towards her room, saying softly, “I just… couldn’t stand for injustice.”

Shi Hao watched her leave, a smile playing on his lips.

He returned to his room, sat cross-legged on the bed, and continued cultivating.

His Daoist and demonic energies, opposing forces, clashed within him. After half an hour, he was exhausted, his meridians aching, as if about to tear.

He stopped. If he continued, he might injure himself, like when the Holy Jade Immortal and Su Mei had first established his foundation, accidentally severing his heart meridian.

Although he stopped, he could sense the new, mysterious energy within him growing stronger.

But he still didn’t know the purpose of this new energy, a fusion of Daoist and demonic energies, so subtle and elusive.

He tried releasing it, but it didn’t create any noticeable force… It was useless for combat.

However, with a thought, he could easily retract it.

This surprised him. It wasn’t tied to his dantian like his other energies. Although it originated from his meridians, it could move freely throughout his body, responding instantly to his thoughts.

It was a profound and mysterious energy.

He tried using the Sacred Heart Clear Mirror Technique to extend this mysterious energy outwards.

And something extraordinary happened. He could sense everything within a five-zhang radius.

He sensed Xu Xiaoyan in the next room, humming softly as she undressed, preparing for bed.

He could sense her every movement: the graceful curve of her back as she bent down to remove her trousers, the faint smile on her face.

Although he couldn’t see her, he perceived her actions with incredible clarity.

He heard the chirping of insects in the grass outside, their tiny legs rustling against the blades, sounds inaudible to ordinary ears.

He sensed a bird landing on the roof, hopping twice before taking flight, its trajectory arcing through the night sky.

Shi Hao was stunned by this profound and incredible sensation.

As his astonishment faded, the mysterious energy retreated.

He exhaled slowly… This new energy was even more powerful than he had imagined.

It wasn’t ordinary internal energy, nor was it Daoist or demonic energy.

It was something more profound, transcending both.

If he had to name it, he would call it “Primordial Energy.”

Profound and mysterious, the gateway to all wonders.

“Xuan” (profound) was a Daoist term for the subtle and formless. Before this, the concept of “Primordial Energy” didn’t exist in this world, at least not as far as Shi Hao knew.

And he couldn’t find any other word to describe this extraordinary energy.

Although he could currently only sense things within five zhang, its potential was limitless.

    He was ecstatic.

After resting for a while, he took out the Jade Clarity Stone and walked outside under the moonlight, letting it absorb the moon’s essence.

He went back to bed as dawn approached. Xu Xiaoyan didn’t come looking for him this morning.

Unlike him, the three Evil Lotus factions only knew his “hooked-nose” appearance was a disguise, but they didn’t know his true face.

But the Moon Lotus Pavilion knew her real identity. If they were cooperating with the other two factions, then they would all know what she looked like.

In that case, it was safer for her to stay put.

He hadn’t been asleep long when he heard a knock on the door next door, followed by a woman’s voice he didn’t recognize, “Xiao Yan? Xiao Yan?”

Then, the sound of the door opening, and Xu Xiaoyan’s surprised voice, “Sister Jing Ya? Yan’er said you weren’t in Dàxīng City.”

The woman said, “I just returned last night. Yan’er left me a message, so I came to see you first thing this morning. Xiao Yan, it’s been so long. You’ve grown so much.”

Xu Xiaoyan said, “You’ve changed a lot too, Sister Jing Ya.”

The woman, Jing Ya, said softly, “Yan’er said you brought a… friend. Aren’t you going to introduce me?”

Xu Xiaoyan snorted, “Don’t listen to her nonsense. He’s just a friend.”

Shi Hao got up, put on his Daoist robe, and opened the door. A woman in her early twenties was talking with Xu Xiaoyan. They both looked at him as he emerged.

From their conversation earlier, Shi Hao knew this was Li Jingya, an older sister figure to both Xu Xiaoyan and Chen Yan’er, who had married a scholar surnamed Zhao.

They now lived in Dàxīng City, her husband working as the chief accountant for the Brocade Dragon Gate, one of the three gangs and six societies.

Since she was Xu Xiaoyan’s “sister,” Shi Hao bowed respectfully, “Shi Chongyun greets Madam.”

Li Jingya smiled, returning the gesture, “There’s no need for formalities, sir. I heard about your impressive victory over Kou Deqiu yesterday, shortly after arriving in Dàxīng. Seeing you today, your reputation precedes you. No wonder Xiao Yan, usually so independent, is now…”

Xu Xiaoyan tugged at her arm, “Sister Jing Ya, it’s only been three years. Why have you become so talkative, like Yan’er?”

Li Jingya chuckled, “It’s just… surprising to see you with a man.”

Xu Xiaoyan changed the subject, “Where’s Yan’er? Why did she let you come alone?”

Li Jingya said, “My husband is in the main hall, discussing Floating Cloud Monastery joining the Brocade Dragon Gate with the abbot. Yan’er is serving tea. I haven’t seen you in so long, so I asked for directions and came to see you.”

Shi Hao said thoughtfully, “Floating Cloud Monastery joining the Brocade Dragon Gate?”

Li Jingya quickly explained, “Don’t misunderstand, sir. The Brocade Dragon Gate has no intention of absorbing Floating Cloud Monastery. Since you’re new to Dàxīng City, you might not know, although we’re one of the three gangs and six societies, we’re different from the other gangs.

“The Brocade Dragon Gate is essentially a trade association, a collective of artisans and craftsmen. We’re responsible for constructing stages and floats for festivals, creating fireworks, and handling arrangements for important events for the prominent families and gangs in Dàxīng City. We also create the dragon and flower lanterns for New Year’s and the Mid-Autumn Festival.”

“Since we’re just a trade association, we rarely get involved in conflicts, but…”

Shi Hao smiled, “In these times, without the ability to defend yourself, your business will be taken by others. And with such a large and profitable business, it’s natural for other gangs to be envious.”

Li Jingya sighed softly, “Exactly! Especially recently, with all the gangs expanding their territory, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for smaller sects and organizations to remain independent. We have no choice but to unite them under the Brocade Dragon Gate’s banner.

“This not only strengthens our numbers and influence, but also offers them protection. Other gangs will think twice before attacking us.”

  • I, The Man Who’ll Conquer Both the Immortal Venerable and the Demon Empress 83

Chapter 83: Ten Steps, One Kill

As the old man finished speaking, the crowd cheered, and Tang Zhijing’s face turned pale with anger.

Chongyun, however, sneered, his hands clasped behind his back, “Senior Brother Kou, do you only have the courage to stand here when others speak for you?

“You boasted yesterday about Floating Cloud Monastery needing a capable leader, but now you’re afraid?”

Kou Deqiu’s face reddened, veins bulging on his forehead, “Very well! I’ll teach you a lesson, you impudent brat!” He drew his sword, the blade flashing, his killing intent palpable.

Tan Danzi, standing behind him, snorted, “Remember, you both agreed to use only the Star Plucking Sword Technique. Using any other technique means forfeiture.”

He had assumed that since this “Chongyun” dared to challenge Kou Deqiu, he must possess some skill. But if he was just someone Chen Chenyun had found at the last minute, he couldn’t possibly surpass Kou Deqiu’s mastery of the Star Plucking Sword Technique.

    Hence, the reminder.

Chongyun, however, said coldly, “Of course.”

Kou Deqiu snorted again, his anger reaching its peak. This young man, almost twenty years his junior, stood before him with such arrogance.

He had come here to assert his dominance, and now, with so many people watching, this brat dared to challenge him, humiliating him publicly.

Despite his rage, he didn’t underestimate his opponent. He held his sword, channeling the Phase Cloud Profound Art, his sword intent simmering.

He stood there like a coiled dragon about to strike, his sword trembling slightly, its aura menacing.

Chen Chenyun and the other Floating Cloud Monastery disciples were inwardly alarmed. Senior Brother Kou was indeed using the Star Plucking Sword Technique, but his sword intent, fueled by the sect’s true energy cultivation method, was so powerful and intimidating that it made them tremble just watching him.

Chen Chenyun thought to himself that if he stood before Kou Deqiu, he wouldn’t even be able to stand steadily.

It was the same sword technique, yet in Kou Deqiu’s hands, even before he moved, its power was terrifying.

Floating Cloud Monastery had once been a renowned sect, but after being labeled as “unorthodox” for refusing to submit to the Chongxian Sect, their access to immortal ingredients cut off, forced to practice external techniques, they had gradually declined.

And now, through Kou Deqiu, they finally saw the true power of the Star Plucking Sword Technique.

Chen Chenyun looked at Chongyun’s back, worried.

Not just him, but all the Floating Cloud Monastery disciples shared his concern.

Although they had placed all their hopes on this young man, they couldn’t shake their doubts.

Both were seventh-rank, but Senior Brother Kou cultivated orthodox Daoist techniques and had been practicing the Star Plucking Sword Technique for years.

Chongyun, on the other hand, had only seen the manual last night and had never even practiced the Phase Cloud Profound Art. The outcome seemed obvious.

But looking at Chongyun’s back, they felt a strange sense of calm.

His posture was steady and unwavering. Although not as burly as Senior Brother Kou, he radiated a powerful aura.

He took a step forward, his stance like a drawn bow, his sword pointed slightly upwards, a simple starting position of the Star Plucking Sword Technique, yet there was a certain grace and elegance to his movements, like the bright moon in the night sky, cold and aloof, its light illuminating the world.

Under his unfathomable aura, even the fierce and imposing Kou Deqiu hesitated.

    Silence fell over the courtyard.

Kou Deqiu’s eyes were sharp, his sword gleaming as he stared at his opponent. Although he wanted to attack, the young man’s simple stance, as steady as a mountain, made him hesitate.

Everyone held their breath. As the moments stretched on, and the two remained motionless, the crowd began to murmur.

The girl’s ethereal voice echoed again, “So this is Senior Brother Kou’s courage? He looks fierce and imposing, but when it comes to fighting, he hesitates. No wonder Master refused to pass the leadership to you. With such cowardice, you would only bring shame to Floating Cloud Monastery.”

Her sharp words were met with laughter. Kou Deqiu, his face burning with shame, roared and lunged forward, his sword flashing, about to unleash a flurry of strikes.

At that moment, Chongyun moved. He thrust his sword forward, a streak of light arcing through the air.

Kou Deqiu, as he attacked, felt a sudden chill. He had been seen through. This incoming sword strike was aimed at his weak point.

Although they were still some distance apart, and his own attack had just begun, normally, he wouldn’t have any exposed weaknesses. But this sword strike, arriving in an instant, targeted the weak point in his wrist as he shifted his grip.

Kou Deqiu, startled, quickly changed his technique, trying to intercept the incoming sword.

The young man across from him pushed out with his palm, and the flying sword, as if propelled by an invisible force, accelerated, its whistling echoing through the air, a flash of crimson light.

Kou Deqiu staggered back, muttering, “No… impossible… this… this is…”

The crowd stared in stunned silence.

Those with weaker cultivation couldn’t even see what had happened.

They had only seen Kou Deqiu attack, his powerful sword strike barely begun, when a streak of light flashed past him.

Then, blood sprayed from Kou Deqiu’s back, splattering on the ground. The flying sword clattered against the stone pavement, blood trickling down its blade, forming a pool.

Chongyun stood there, his expression calm and impassive, his hands clasped behind his back, watching Kou Deqiu, who was swaying unsteadily.

Those with stronger cultivation were even more shocked.

They had seen the young man’s flying sword, Kou Deqiu’s desperate attempt to change his technique, and the young man’s seemingly effortless push that accelerated the sword, making Kou Deqiu miss.

Then, the sword, unimpeded, had pierced Kou Deqiu’s chest.

Chen Chenyun said, his voice filled with awe, “Star Chasing… Piercing the Dipper!”

The Floating Cloud Monastery disciples gasped. Star Chasing Piercing the Dipper? The most powerful technique of the Star Plucking Sword Technique, a technique few had ever mastered, even during the monastery’s golden age?

As they stared in shock and disbelief, Kou Deqiu collapsed into a pool of blood, twitching.

His legs twitched as if in defiance, in anger. Then, with a final, almost inaudible sigh, he lay still.

No one knew what his final sigh meant.

Tan Danzi, Tang Zhijing, and the others, staring at the corpse in the pool of blood, their faces pale, stood frozen.

They had been standing behind Kou Deqiu, outside the courtyard. The sword that had pierced him, stained with blood, now stood embedded in the ground before them, its hilt trembling, blood dripping from its tassels.

Their gazes, passing over the lifeless body, fixed on the young man.

He turned and walked away, reciting, “Zhao’s blade, from its silk scabbard drawn, gleams bright as frost or snow at dawn. On silver saddle sits his steed of white; he rides like shooting star across the night. Ten steps, and one life meets its doom; a thousand miles he rides, then seeks no tomb!”

Watching his retreating figure, Tan Danzi, Tang Zhijing, and the others felt a chill run down their spines, speechless…

As Tan Danzi, Tang Zhijing, and the others retreated in stunned silence, Floating Cloud Monastery erupted in celebration.

Even Kou Deqiu’s corpse, lying in a pool of blood, was ignored.

Chen Chenyun and the others were overjoyed. Without Chongyun’s help, they would have lost the monastery.

The others were also amazed by the young Daoist’s skill, his single, decisive strike.

That evening, Chen Chenyun held a banquet to thank Shi Hao and Xu Xiaoyan, who had secretly assisted him.

“Brother Shi is truly remarkable!” After the banquet, Chen Yan’er, her eyes sparkling with excitement, said to Xu Xiaoyan, “Where did you find him?”

“He’s so handsome! I was worried about him, and then, in the blink of an eye, his opponent was down. I thought I was hallucinating.”

Xu Xiaoyan said, “Yes, yes, he’s very skilled. Go tell him yourself. Why are you clinging to me?” She tried to pry Chen Yan’er’s hands off her arm.

Chen Yan’er said, “Xiao Yan, Xiao Yan, tell me, what do his parents do? Is he married? Does he have a fiancée? What kind of girls does he like…?”

Xu Xiaoyan said, “Didn’t you ask me all this before?”

Chen Yan’er said, “Tell me, tell me, he…”

Xu Xiaoyan finally managed to free herself, “Go ask him yourself! Why are you asking me?”

As darkness fell, the excitement at Floating Cloud Monastery subsided.

Shi Hao, after taking a bath, was walking back to his room when he saw Xu Xiaoyan, still wearing the Daoist robe borrowed from Chen Yan’er, standing by a red pillar in the corridor, hands on her hips.

Shi Hao asked, “What is it?”

Xu Xiaoyan smiled, “You were quite impressive today. The name ‘Chongyun of Floating Cloud Monastery’ is spreading quickly through the martial world.”

Shi Hao said, “I was just lucky.”

Xu Xiaoyan looked up at him, “But it doesn’t make sense. I asked the others. The ‘Star Chasing Piercing the Dipper’ technique requires projecting true energy externally. Only mid-rank martial artists and above can do that. You’re only seventh-rank. How can you project your true energy?”

Shi Hao smiled, “My Daoist cultivation technique is… unique.”

Xu Xiaoyan said thoughtfully, “Well, it’s a good thing! I’ve already spoken to the abbot. We’ll be staying here as Floating Cloud Monastery disciples for the next few days. Chongyun of Floating Cloud Monastery, hee hee, no one will connect you to the ‘Mad Blade Hero’ that way.”

Shi Hao nodded, “That’s a good plan.”

  • I, The Man Who’ll Conquer Both the Immortal Venerable and the Demon Empress 82

Chapter 82: Some Things Just Can’t Be Ignored

Deep within the inner courtyard, Chen Chenyun handed a sword manual to Shi Hao.

Shi Hao sat down and carefully examined the manual, page by page.

    The candlelight illuminated his face.

Outside, the others held their breath, waiting.

After a long while, Shi Hao closed the manual and smiled, “No problem.”

Chen Chenyun asked, “Are you sure?”

At this point, he wasn’t worried about the young man stealing the manual and running away.

After all, Floating Cloud Monastery would fall into the villain’s hands tomorrow, its century-old reputation ruined. A mere sword manual meant nothing.

He was worried that Shi Hao wouldn’t be able to learn the Star Plucking Sword Technique in a single night… Mastering an entire sword technique in such a short time was unrealistic.

And even if he did learn it, his chances of defeating Kou Deqiu were slim.

After all, only the Phase Cloud Profound Art could truly unlock the Star Plucking Sword Technique’s full potential.

Shi Hao stood up, “Leave tomorrow’s battle to me.”

That night, for many, was a sleepless one.

Shi Hao practiced the sword technique alone in the west courtyard… For him, it wasn’t particularly difficult.

The Star Plucking Sword Technique was indeed a powerful technique, but it was far inferior to the Immortal Lightning Sword Technique. And his Gathering Essence Flowing Pearl true energy was far superior to the Phase Cloud Profound Art.

In fact, after just two hours of practice, he had completely mastered the essence of the Star Plucking Sword Technique.

He then returned to his room and continued refining the new, mysterious true energy, finally resting just before dawn.

For Chen Chenyun and the others, sleep was impossible.

They had learned that this young man surnamed Shi possessed a seventh-rank cultivation… the same level as Kou Deqiu.

But he was almost twenty years younger than Kou Deqiu, meaning his training couldn’t possibly be as extensive.

Of course, there were geniuses in the martial world. Judging someone’s strength solely based on their age was foolish.

But tomorrow’s duel was restricted to the Star Plucking Sword Technique. Kou Deqiu practiced the Phase Cloud Profound Art, which perfectly complemented the sword technique, and he had been practicing it for years.

For this young man to surpass him in a single night… it seemed impossible.

In fact, when he had volunteered, they had thought he was joking.

But martial artists had their pride. Since he had stepped forward with such righteous conviction, they wouldn’t question him. Even if he lost, they would have no regrets.

And if he won, they would be eternally grateful, willing to follow him through fire and water.

Despite their hope, they couldn’t shake their worries.

Chen Yan’er repeatedly questioned Xu Xiaoyan, trying to gauge Shi Hao’s true strength.

Xu Xiaoyan just said, “Don’t worry, don’t worry, it’ll be fine, it’ll be fine,” and then went to sleep.

She was the first to sleep and slept the most soundly, as if nothing was happening.

The next morning, sunlight bathed Rong Mountain. Kou Deqiu arrived with his entourage. The monastery had been meticulously cleaned, and large incense burners were placed at the entrance.

Incense burners at the entrance were customary for Daoist temples, but Floating Cloud Monastery, having become more of a martial arts school, hadn’t adhered to such formalities.

Now, with the courtyard swept clean, the incense burners lit, the stone tablet polished, and the children dressed in Daoist robes, lined up neatly on either side of the entrance, the monastery regained some of its former dignity.

Inside, rows of benches had been placed in the courtyard, and a large crowd had already gathered.

Although Wei Yi and Chen Chenyun’s other friends couldn’t participate in the fight, they had come early to help clean and prepare the monastery, inviting other martial artists from the surrounding area to witness the duel.

The crowd was so large that even with the extra benches, there wasn’t enough seating, people standing shoulder to shoulder on both sides of the courtyard.

This made Tan Danzi, Tang Zhijing, Daoist Qinghong, and the others frown.

Kou Deqiu snorted, his anger simmering. He was determined to kill Chen Chenyun today, not only to eliminate a potential threat but also to intimidate his junior brothers and make an example of them.

“Friends and fellow martial artists!” Chen Chenyun, dressed in his Daoist robe, stepped forward and bowed to the assembled crowd. “Our master has unfortunately passed away, leaving behind Floating Cloud Monastery and its meager assets. I, unworthy as I am, have been entrusted with the leadership.”

“Senior Brother Kou has returned, intending to claim the leadership. Although my junior brothers and I are not highly skilled, we will not back down. Therefore, today, we will settle this matter through a contest of skill, witnessed by all of you. If Senior Brother prevails, we will naturally accept his leadership without question.”

“But if Senior Brother is defeated, he must leave Floating Cloud Monastery and never interfere in its affairs again!”

He turned to Kou Deqiu, “Do you have any objections, Senior Brother?”

Kou Deqiu’s face was dark with killing intent, his voice cold and menacing, “None whatsoever.”

Tang Zhijing of the Sacred Confucian Academy stepped forward, laughing, “In that case, allow me to add a few words! Every sect and school has its internal disputes, matters of right and wrong, difficult to resolve…”

He was interrupted by boos and jeers, but he continued, seemingly oblivious, “As martial artists, ultimately, we must rely on our skills to determine the truth. Since this is an internal matter of Floating Cloud Monastery, we are merely here as witnesses.”

“Firstly, only disciples of Floating Cloud Monastery may participate. Secondly, no external techniques are allowed. Thirdly, it must be a one-on-one duel. And fourthly, since this is a martial arts contest, accidents can happen. Although peace and restraint are valued in the martial world, sometimes things get out of hand. Therefore, those who participate must accept the consequences, win or lose, life or death.”

“These are the rules. Are there any objections?”

His powerful voice silenced the crowd.

    Chen Chenyun said, “Agreed.”

Tang Zhijing chuckled and stepped back. He had already investigated. The most skilled martial artist in Floating Cloud Monastery was Chen Chenyun, who was only eighth-rank and, due to their lack of access to immortal ingredients, couldn’t cultivate their sect’s Daoist internal energy technique.

Kou Deqiu stepped forward, sneering, “Very well. Let me experience Junior Brother Chenyun’s skills and see if he’s worthy of being the abbot.”

Chen Chenyun said, “Your opponent is not me, Senior Brother.” He turned and walked away.

The Floating Cloud Monastery disciples parted, and a young man, carrying a sword on his back, stepped forward.

As he appeared, a powerful, invisible sword intent pressed down on the crowd. Although no one had noticed him before, the moment he stepped into the courtyard, all eyes were on him.

His presence commanded attention, his aura filling the air. Although his build was slender, not particularly imposing, and his face gentle and refined, making him look more like a scholar than a swordsman, he radiated an undeniable power, like a sharpened blade, his presence impossible to ignore.

Kou Deqiu demanded, “Who are you?”

The young man, his hands clasped behind him, stood before him, his stance steady and unwavering, his voice calm and resolute, “I am Chongyun, here to test Senior Brother’s skills.”

Kou Deqiu snorted, “Chongyun? I’ve never heard of you.”

Chen Chenyun said loudly, “Junior Brother Chongyun is Master’s last disciple, taken on after you left. It’s understandable that you don’t recognize him, Senior Brother. He is a member of Floating Cloud Monastery. Everyone here can testify.”

The monastery disciples voiced their agreement. Wei Yi, Zhao Rong, and others also spoke up, “That’s right. We’ve seen Chongyun many times during our visits to the monastery.” “Kou Deqiu, you’ve been away from Floating Cloud Monastery for so long, you don’t even know your own junior brothers?”

A sweet, ethereal voice echoed, “Kou Deqiu, you’ve schemed and plotted to seize the leadership. But Master anticipated your betrayal and took on Chongyun as his last disciple, teaching him our sect’s secret techniques, waiting for this day, for you to reveal your true colors.”

Although the girl’s voice was soft, it seemed to come from everywhere.

Tan Danzi snorted, “Did your former abbot really have such a disciple, or did you find someone at the last minute to try and keep the leadership?”

An old man stood up from the crowd, “I can testify. I was present when the former abbot introduced Chongyun to us. He said Chongyun was his last disciple, and although Floating Cloud Monastery had declined, there was no need for a grand ceremony, simply asking us to witness.”

Several other elderly men also stood up.

Tang Zhijing looked at the first old man and said coldly, “Elder Wei, you’ve been retired for a long time. Getting involved in this won’t benefit you.”

The old man, Wei Yi’s grandfather, his back hunched, sighed, “Although might makes right in the martial world, right is right, and wrong is wrong. Everyone can see the truth. There are some things… some things just can’t be ignored. Even if it means risking this old life, I have to speak up!”

Chapter 81: Is There Still Time?

Chen Chenyun asked solemnly, “What do you want?”

Kou Deqiu laughed, “Floating Cloud Monastery is a martial arts sect, so we should settle this the way martial artists do. Let’s have a fair competition. If any of my junior brothers can defeat me, even by a single move, I’ll leave and give up my claim to the leadership.”

Chen Chenyun and the others remained silent.

Tan Danzi said loudly, “Indeed! For martial artists, a contest of skill is the fairest way. If no one can defeat Nephew Deqiu, then he should lead Floating Cloud Monastery. No one can dispute that.”

Kou Deqiu looked at Chen Chenyun and sneered, “Are you afraid, Junior Brother Chenyun?”

Chen Chenyun gritted his teeth and stepped forward, “Fine! In that case, I’ll…”

The girl’s voice rang out again from the crowd, “Even a martial arts contest can be unfair. Senior Brother Chenyun has been busy managing the monastery all day, while you’ve been resting.

“Challenging him now, when he’s exhausted, is despicable!”

The monastery disciples voiced their agreement. Kou Deqiu shouted, “Who is that girl? Show yourself!”

He looked around, but unable to pinpoint the source of the voice, he couldn’t find her.

Seeing his junior brothers’ support for Chen Chenyun, Kou Deqiu snorted, “Fine, I’ll give you a night to rest. I’ll return tomorrow morning to test your skills, Chenyun, and all of you.”

Tang Zhijing stepped forward, smiling, “We will also be here to ensure fairness. However, since this contest is for the leadership of Floating Cloud Monastery, you should use the monastery’s traditional Star Plucking Sword Technique. And to ensure fairness, no one is allowed to gang up on him, and no other techniques besides the Star Plucking Sword Technique are allowed.”

The girl’s voice, ethereal and elusive, suggested she possessed more than just eighth or ninth-rank cultivation. He didn’t know who she was, but she likely wasn’t from Floating Cloud Monastery, so he added these restrictions.

He was also worried that Chen Chenyun, to protect the monastery, might invite outside help, turning this leadership dispute into a larger conflict within the martial world. Hence the conditions of “one-on-one combat” and “only the Star Plucking Sword Technique.”

Kou Deqiu laughed, “Very well! Tomorrow morning, I’ll test Junior Brother Chenyun’s skills and see how much he has improved.”

He turned and left, followed by Tan Danzi, Tang Zhijing, and the others.

After they left, the Floating Cloud Monastery Daoists gathered, their faces filled with anger. “Those bullies!” someone shouted. “Speaking of justice, those villains are all corrupt!”

Another said worriedly, “Senior Brother Chenyun, are you really going to fight him?”

Shi Hao looked at Xu Xiaoyan and smiled, “You’re quite good at that.”

    Xu Xiaoyan said, “Am I?”

A sense of despair settled over Floating Cloud Monastery. Chen Chenyun told everyone to calm down while he thought of a solution.

Shi Hao and Xu Xiaoyan exchanged glances and walked around the monastery, the atmosphere heavy and oppressive.

They reached the inner courtyard and saw Madam Wang and Chen Yan’er. Madam Wang, looking at her silent husband, wiped away her tears, “Husband, just give up. Let Senior Brother have the monastery. Let’s leave tonight with the children.”

Chen Chenyun shook his head, “Master entrusted the monastery to me. He said that although Floating Cloud Monastery has declined, its centuries-old reputation must be preserved. Senior Brother is ambitious and has committed many vile deeds while working for the Six Gates. If he takes over, our reputation will be ruined.”

“As long as I live, I won’t let that happen.”

Madam Wang sobbed, “But you’re no match for him! Even before, when he was still here, you could only fight him to a draw. I heard he obtained immortal ingredients from the Chongxian Sect and has mastered the Phase Cloud Profound Art, his strength now surpassing yours. He’s seventh-rank, while you’re only eighth. He cultivates Daoist internal energy, while you, without access to immortal ingredients, can only practice external techniques.”

“How can you defeat him in the Star Plucking Sword Technique? Knowing his character, he won’t show you any mercy.”

Chen Chenyun shook his head, “I’ll do my best.”

Four men arrived. One of them called out, “Brother Chenyun.”

It was Chen Chenyun’s friends: Wei Yi, Zhao Rong, Lü Lihua, and Li Yihai.

Wei Yi said, “Chenyun, I heard Kou Deqiu came looking for trouble. What are you going to do?”

Chen Chenyun looked at his friends and said in a low voice, “I’ve made up my mind. Tomorrow, I’ll fight him to the death. But I need you to help me get my wife and children out of here…”

Madam Wang cried, “Husband, even if it means death, I’ll stay with you!”

Chen Chenyun turned to her, “Even if not for me, think of our children. Kou Deqiu is vengeful. If you stay, he won’t spare you.”

Lü Lihua said angrily, “Let’s gather our friends tonight. Tomorrow, we’ll fight him together!”

Chen Chenyun shook his head, “It’s useless. Kou Deqiu has the backing of the Chongxian Sect, the Six Gates, and the Sacred Confucian Academy. It will only endanger all of you.”

Li Yihai said, “We’re not afraid…”

Wei Yi, the most level-headed among them, frowned, “It’s not about being afraid. If we could defeat him by fighting together, we wouldn’t hesitate. But with our skills, even with reinforcements, we’re no match for him.”

They were at a loss. Shi Hao and Xu Xiaoyan pulled Chen Yan’er aside and quietly questioned her.

Chen Yan’er said helplessly, “The reason for Floating Cloud Monastery’s decline is mainly because we were labeled as unorthodox by the Chongxian Sect, cutting off our access to immortal ingredients. No one can cultivate our sect’s Daoist internal energy technique, the Phase Cloud Profound Art, anymore.”

“Although Kou Deqiu is the senior disciple and Master’s son, he defied Master’s wishes and betrayed our traditions, joining the government. And after joining the Six Gates, he committed many vile deeds. People came to the monastery to complain, and Master, angered by his son’s actions, fell ill. He couldn’t do anything to stop him.”

“Now, using his connections in the Six Gates, he obtained immortal ingredients from the Chongxian Sect and has mastered the Phase Cloud Profound Art. Our monastery’s Star Plucking Sword Technique requires the Phase Cloud Profound Art to reach its full potential. Without it, its power is significantly reduced.”

Xu Xiaoyan said thoughtfully, “In terms of foundation, one is seventh-rank, the other eighth. In terms of cultivation method, one practices Daoist internal energy, the other an external technique meant for outer disciples. And although they’ll both be using the same sword technique, one can use its full power, while the other can only use a fraction… What’s the point of even fighting?”

    Chen Yan’er said helplessly, “Exactly.”

She glanced at Madam Wang and whispered, “And that Kou Deqiu had… inappropriate intentions towards my aunt even before he left. That’s why Uncle wants to send her away. Otherwise, knowing that villain, he would definitely…”

“When he joined the Six Gates, he assaulted a young woman. Her parents came to the monastery to complain, but Master couldn’t do anything. They then reported it to the authorities but were accused of false accusations and beaten to death. Master was so distraught by this incident that he fell ill, regretting ever having such a son.”

“If Floating Cloud Monastery falls into that villain’s hands, Grandpa and I will definitely leave. It’s a pity. Although the monastery has declined, we’ve upheld its reputation for generations. And now, this…”

Her eyes dimmed. Having lived here for three years, she felt like part of the monastery, saddened by its impending doom.

Shi Hao looked at the young Daoist priests, their faces filled with anger and indignation.

In reality, if Kou Deqiu became the abbot, with the backing of the Chongxian Sect, their lives might actually improve. They wouldn’t have to worry about resources, wouldn’t have to struggle to make a living by teaching martial arts, and they would have better opportunities.

But some things were more important than comfort and opportunity.

Shi Hao, his hands clasped behind his back, walked towards Chen Chenyun. For some reason, although he was just walking, everyone instinctively looked at him.

“What’s he doing?” Chen Yan’er stared at him, a strange feeling stirring within her.

It was as if the frozen, desolate landscape of their despair was suddenly illuminated by a ray of light.

Just looking at his imposing figure brought a warmth to this place of despair.

It was as if the layers of ice that had been suffocating them were shattering with every step he took.

Chen Yan’er murmured, “What’s he doing?” Although her voice was filled with confusion, her eyes sparkled with a newfound hope.

She didn’t understand why she suddenly felt this surge of hope, like a light piercing through the darkness, filling her heart with life.

Xu Xiaoyan smiled, “He’s doing what he believes is right.”

Chen Chenyun also instinctively looked at the approaching young man. Everyone was watching him, drawn to him, as if he had become the sun, their only source of light and warmth.

Under their gazes, the young man smiled faintly and asked, “Is there still time for me to join Floating Cloud Monastery?”

  • I, The Man Who’ll Conquer Both the Immortal Venerable and the Demon Empress 80

    Chapter 80: The Ancestral Altar

Shi Hao saw a large palanquin being escorted by soldiers.

An old woman, her figure resembling a crumbling mud pagoda, sat cross-legged inside the palanquin.

Four burly women, their bodies surprisingly muscular despite being female, carried the palanquin.

Eight beautiful women, dressed in colorful, exotic, wool garments, their faces covered with veils, walked before and behind the palanquin, singing and dancing, scattering flower petals and ribbons, attracting the attention of passersby.

Two young women, dressed in exquisite, gold-woven robes, their faces veiled, carrying pearls and jade, walked before the palanquin, between the dancers and the carriers.

To Shi Hao’s surprise, one of the young women was Yue Ya’er.

The daughter of the Yue Ke Tai family, one of the four great barbarian families.

Shi Hao looked around and saw two military officers, their bearing suggesting considerable skill, leading the escort, maintaining a security perimeter.

The soldiers cleared a wide path for the palanquin, pushing the crowd to the sides.

This made Shi Hao wonder about the old woman’s identity.

Even Yue Ya’er, a young lady of such high status, was acting as an attendant, carrying flowers and leading the procession.

Dàxīng City was a frequent haunt of high-ranking officials and nobles, and the people were accustomed to such displays.

After the procession passed, the crowd quickly dispersed, some commenting on the extravagant display for an old woman.

But Shi Hao knew that the old woman, and the entire procession, were not to be trifled with.

He saw two martial artists hurrying towards the procession, leaping over the crowd and onto the rooftops.

As they jumped down from a roof, one whispered, “Quickly inform the higher-ups. Grandmother Ba of the Ancestral Altar has arrived.”

    They quickly disappeared.

Shi Hao repeated the name silently, “Ancestral Altar?”

He recalled having heard the name mentioned once or twice in Jin Prefecture.

He whispered to Xu Xiaoyan, “Do you know about the Ancestral Altar?”

Xu Xiaoyan said, “Ancestral Altar? What’s that? Is it edible?”

Shi Hao shook his head. Even Xu Xiaoyan, with her vast knowledge, hadn’t heard of it.

It seemed the Ancestral Altar wasn’t a martial arts sect but likely some secretive organization within the barbarian court.

And who were those two martial artists? Why were they so concerned about the arrival of Grandmother Ba of the Ancestral Altar? And what was Yue Ya’er’s role in this “Ancestral Altar”?

They left the street and returned to Floating Cloud Monastery.

The atmosphere within the monastery was strangely subdued, unlike the previous day.

The children were still practicing their forms, but no one was instructing them. They moved listlessly, their attention wandering.

Even the children sensed something was amiss.

The Daoist priests were gathered in the inner courtyard, whispering among themselves.

Shi Hao and Xu Xiaoyan exchanged glances and went inside, looking for Chen Yan’er, but they couldn’t find her.

They saw several elderly men, including Chen Yan’er’s grandfather, sitting in a corner, sighing.

Xu Xiaoyan asked, “Grandpa Chen, where’s Yan’er?”

Old Chen said, “She’s probably in the inner courtyard with her aunt.”

The abbot, Chen Chenyun, was Chen Yan’er’s paternal uncle, so the “aunt” he referred to was naturally the abbot’s wife, Madam Wang.

Xu Xiaoyan asked, “Grandpa Chen, what happened here? Why does everyone seem…”

    “They’re here!” someone shouted.

The Daoist priests, their faces grim, drew their swords and rushed out.

Shi Hao and Xu Xiaoyan exchanged glances and followed them. The children were pulled aside. A group of people entered through the main gate.

At the front was a tall, thin Daoist priest with a high forehead, a sword at his waist.

He was followed by a diverse group, some dressed as Daoists, others as Confucian scholars, seemingly from different sects and schools.

The Daoist priest looked around and sneered, “I’m still your senior brother. Are you really going to point your swords at me?”

A young Daoist priest shouted, “Kou Deqiu, you left Floating Cloud Monastery. Why have you returned?”

Kou Deqiu barked, “Is that how you address your senior brother?!” His figure blurred.

The young Daoist priest felt a sharp pain on his face as he was struck, blood trickling from his mouth as he staggered back. The others also retreated in alarm.

Shi Hao and Xu Xiaoyan exchanged glances. Kou Deqiu clearly possessed a seventh-rank foundation, while the young Daoist he had struck was at most ninth-rank, and a weak one at that. The difference in their strength was obvious.

And the other Daoists in the monastery, although some were skilled, none had reached the ninth rank. They could only help the injured young man, glaring at Kou Deqiu but not daring to speak.

Someone hurried out from the inner courtyard, “Senior Brother, what are you doing?”

It was Chen Chenyun, the abbot.

Kou Deqiu sneered, “Chenyun, long time no see! I heard that after my father’s death, you declared yourself abbot and seized control of Floating Cloud Monastery?”

Chen Chenyun frowned, “Master appointed me as his successor before he died. Several of our brothers were present and can testify.”

One of the Daoists said, “That’s right. We were all there. We can all confirm that Master passed the leadership to Senior Brother Chenyun.”

Kou Deqiu snorted, “Who knows if you’re all colluding? Did you report this to the authorities? Did you inform the Chongxian Sect?”

Chen Chenyun frowned, “This is an internal matter of Floating Cloud Monastery…”

Kou Deqiu said, “So you just decided among yourselves? Then I have to wonder if you all conspired to murder my father and seize control of the monastery.”

A Daoist priest couldn’t help but shout, “Senior Brother, you’re slandering us!”

A short, fat Daoist priest calmly stepped forward from behind Kou Deqiu, “Nephew Deqiu’s suspicions are not unfounded. Without any official record, it does seem suspicious. It’s possible you all colluded.”

Chen Chenyun and the others looked at him. The fat Daoist priest stroked his short beard and smiled, “I am Tan Danzi of the Chongxian Sect.”

Chen Chenyun and the others paled. With the Chongxian Sect backing Kou Deqiu, their situation was dire.

Tan Danzi turned and introduced the others, “This is Master Tang Zhijing of the Sacred Confucian Academy, this is Daoist Qinghong of the True Martial Sect, this is Master Mu of the Demon Subduing Altar…” They were all relatively well-known figures in Dàxīng City.

Tan Danzi said, “We’ve come here to ensure fairness. Floating Cloud Monastery, no matter what, is a Daoist sect, a long-established sect in Dàxīng City. Although it has declined, it shouldn’t be controlled by such underhanded methods.

“Nephew Deqiu is the senior disciple of Floating Cloud Monastery and the son of your former abbot. After his father’s death, you should have invited him back to discuss the succession…”

Someone couldn’t help but say, “He defied Master’s wishes and joined the Six Gates, causing Master to die of anger…”

Tan Danzi sneered, “What’s wrong with joining the Six Gates? He’s serving the court, serving the country. If that’s a crime, are you suggesting Floating Cloud Monastery is rebelling against the court?”

The Daoist priest who had spoken shrank back, silenced despite his anger.

Tan Danzi continued, “Nephew Deqiu is risking his life serving the court, bringing honor to Floating Cloud Monastery. A hundred years ago, Floating Cloud Monastery was a powerful sect in Dàxīng City. Its decline is due to people like you, clinging to outdated traditions, lacking ambition.

“And you even conspired to usurp the leadership while he was away…”

Chen Chenyun suddenly said, “Don’t spout nonsense, Daoist. Many people in the monastery can testify that Master appointed me as his successor before he died. The Chongxian Sect claims to be the orthodox leader of the Daoist sects. Is this how you operate, publicly slandering and accusing people without proof?”

Tan Danzi snorted but didn’t reply. Tang Zhijing of the Sacred Confucian Academy stepped forward, his hands clasped behind him, “Daoist Tan Dan is simply concerned about the future of Floating Cloud Monastery. Your former abbot choosing his junior brother as his successor instead of his senior disciple is highly irregular.

“We’ve come here for the sake of justice in the martial world!”

He tapped his walking stick on the ground as he spoke, the sound echoing.

A girl’s voice suddenly rang out, “You speak of justice, yet you barge in here with a mob, accusing people without proof. Isn’t this just bullying?”

Her words voiced everyone’s thoughts, and the monastery disciples echoed her sentiment,

    “That’s right!”

“They’re just bullies, hiding behind high-minded words.”

“Justice? It’s people like them who are corrupting the martial world!”

Tang Zhijing, angered by their defiance, looked around, trying to identify the girl who had spoken.

But her voice seemed to come from everywhere, sometimes from the east, sometimes from the west, making it impossible to pinpoint her location.

The monastery disciples, already indignant, grew louder.

Kou Deqiu shouted, “Silence!” He forcefully suppressed their voices and stepped forward.

He sneered, “I am the senior disciple of Floating Cloud Monastery, and that’s the truth. Floating Cloud Monastery was once a righteous sect. During its decline, it should be led by someone capable of restoring its former glory, not someone who just teaches children useless flowery forms, turning a once-respected sect into a second-rate martial arts school.”

He snorted and looked around disdainfully, “But I’m not unreasonable. We were all brothers once. I’ll give you a chance…”

  • I, The Man Who’ll Conquer Both the Immortal Venerable and the Demon Empress 79

    Chapter 79: Black Heart Enchantress

Xu Xiaoyan gasped, “It really is?”

Her surprise attracted the attention of the others.

She muttered, “But that’s impossible. One is jade, the other a doll. They’re completely different. And if it really was the Emerald Beauty, why didn’t the Snake Charmer recognize it?

“I would have given it to her if she had asked.”

The woman in the black floral dress said, “Because back then, no one knew the Emerald Beauty was not only alive but also capable of transformation.

“It was Grandmaster Shuiyue of the Mirror Flower Water Moon Pavilion who discovered this. The Emerald Beauty was in the possession of the Black Lotus Realm, who were trying to unlock its secrets and claim the Demon Empress’s treasure for themselves. Even our Moon Lotus Pavilion and the Mirror Flower Water Moon Pavilion weren’t aware of this.”

“But there was a spy from the Ghost Extreme Sect within the Black Lotus Realm. After learning about the Emerald Beauty, the Ghost Extreme Sect broke the demonic pact, attacking the Black Lotus Realm. The Black Lotus Realm suffered heavy losses, and even their leader, ‘Immaculate Holy Lotus,’ was severely injured. And the Emerald Beauty disappeared during the chaos.”

Xu Xiaoyan said sadly, “The Ghost Extreme Sect is too powerful. None of the three Evil Lotus factions can defeat them alone.”

The woman in the black floral dress said, “Exactly! The Black Lotus Realm, left with no other choice, set aside their past grievances and approached both the Mirror Flower Water Moon Pavilion and our Moon Lotus Pavilion. Although the three factions have been fighting for two hundred years, times have changed. Firstly, the Emerald Beauty belongs to us, the three Evil Lotus factions. It cannot fall into the hands of outsiders.

“Secondly, this is the perfect opportunity to reshape the martial world. Everyone can see that the barbarian court’s reign is nearing its end. If we continue our infighting, we’ll not only miss this golden opportunity but also be destroyed in the ensuing chaos. Therefore, Grandmaster Shuiyue proposed an alliance between the three factions to fight against the Ghost Extreme Sect and retrieve the Emerald Beauty, unlocking the secrets of the Demon Empress’s legacy.”

“And after the Snake Charmer reported encountering you, Grandmaster Shuiyue consulted ancient texts and confirmed that the doll is likely the Emerald Beauty.”

Xu Xiaoyan said, “But a doll is a doll, and jade is jade…”

The woman in the black floral dress said, “The Jade Corpse Technique is a unique and ancient secret art of the Evil Lotus Sect. The practitioner can transform into jade, their body harder than steel, impervious even to high-grade weapons. This technique requires a very special kind of demonic essence.”

“Since the division of the Night Charm Demonic scriptures, no one has practiced this technique. Although it’s recorded in the scriptures, it’s in the most secretive section. Unless the complete scriptures are restored, no one can learn it. That’s why the Snake Charmer didn’t realize it.”

Xu Xiaoyan murmured, “So, that doll is a practitioner of the Jade Corpse Technique?”

The woman in the black floral dress looked at her intently, “Precisely.”

Xu Xiaoyan sighed, “Aunt Ting, don’t look at me like that. I don’t know where it is now. It left on its own.”

The woman said calmly, “Even if we believe you, we have to convince the Ghost Extreme Sect as well.”

Xu Xiaoyan said, “The Ghost Extreme Sect?”

The woman said, “I told you, there’s a spy from the Ghost Extreme Sect within the Black Lotus Realm. Before contacting you, we had already identified her. She held a high position within the Black Lotus Realm and was plotting to usurp the leadership with the help of the Ghost Extreme Sect.

“Although Immaculate Holy Lotus managed to eliminate her, she had already betrayed us. Now, the Ghost Extreme Sect is also looking for you.”

Xu Xiaoyan and Shi Hao exchanged glances. This was becoming a headache.

The woman said, “Only our Moon Lotus Pavilion can help you now. The Ghost Extreme Sect is after you. Without our protection, you won’t be able to hide for long.”

Xu Xiaoyan smiled, “Aunt Ting, if you and the Black Lotus Realm and the Mirror Flower Water Moon Pavilion truly want to cooperate, you should focus on restoring the complete Night Charm Demonic scriptures, not finding this Emerald Beauty. Once the scriptures are complete, your strength will naturally increase.”

The woman shook her head, “You still don’t understand. The Emerald Beauty is part of the Night Charm Demonic scriptures.”

Xu Xiaoyan asked in surprise, “How is that possible?”

The woman said, “I can’t reveal the details, but you must understand, we have to retrieve the Emerald Beauty. I came here hoping you would hand it over willingly. Otherwise, the three factions will have to capture you. I’m sure you’re familiar with our interrogation methods.”

Xu Xiaoyan glanced at Shi Hao, then sighed, “Although you won’t believe us, we have to say it again… we don’t have it. It left on its own. We don’t know where it went.”

The woman stood up, “In that case, good luck.”

She turned and left. After she was gone, Xu Xiaoyan looked at Shi Hao and said sadly, “This is bad. They didn’t want it when we offered it, and now that we don’t have it, they’re after us.”

Shi Hao said coldly, “It’s not our problem. And even if we did have it, why should we give it to them?”

Xu Xiaoyan sighed, “The good news is, since the Chongxian Sect has a main temple in Dàxīng City, the demonic sects can’t operate openly here. The bad news is, although the Ghost Extreme Sect and the three Evil Lotus factions can’t openly operate here, such an important city must have their hidden agents.”

Shi Hao asked, “Who was that woman just now?”

Xu Xiaoyan said, “Huan Tingting, the ‘Black Heart Enchantress’ of the Moon Lotus Pavilion. She was my mother’s junior sister, so I call her Aunt Ting. She used to be quite kind to me, but in the demonic sects, relationships are fragile. When it comes to profit, there’s no such thing as sentiment.

“And with something as important as the Emerald Beauty… we’re in trouble now!”

She looked at Shi Hao, “Now I really hope you’re some powerful young master with a mysterious and incredibly powerful ‘Madam’ who can wipe out all three factions, even the Ghost Extreme Sect, with a flick of her wrist.”

She clasped her hands together, looked up at the ceiling, and said with mock piety, “Although I made it up, I pray to the Heavenly Venerable that my wish comes true!”

She lowered her hands and looked at him expectantly, her eyes sparkling, as if saying, “Tell me, tell me, did my wish come true?”

Shi Hao said thoughtfully, “If we can make it to the next full moon, I might have a solution.”

    Xu Xiaoyan asked, surprised, “Really?”

Shi Hao said solemnly, “Perhaps I can find out what the Emerald Beauty truly is by then.”

Xu Xiaoyan jumped up and grabbed his hand, “Let’s go!”

Shi Hao looked at the news bulletins on the table, “These…”

Xu Xiaoyan said, “You can’t take them with you. They’re only for reading here.”

They quickly left “The Dregs” and walked through a deserted alley.

Shi Hao glanced back and saw a head quickly disappear around a corner.

    He whispered, “We’re being followed.”

Xu Xiaoyan said, “If Aunt Ting could find us, so can the Ghost Extreme Sect. Let’s go!”

They ran, and soon, they heard the sound of pursuing wind.

Shi Hao used the Soul Chasing Locking Steps, sensing the surrounding energy flows. He pulled Xu Xiaoyan along, “This way!” They turned a corner and entered a dead end, stopping.

As Xu Xiaoyan looked at him, puzzled, he grabbed her and leaped over the wall, landing on the other side.

Moments later, a figure leaped onto the wall, looking around. He moved gracefully, searching the rooftops. Shi Hao and Xu Xiaoyan had crossed the wall just as he landed.

Using the Soul Chasing Locking Steps, Shi Hao quickly lost their pursuers, merging into the crowds on a busy street. Along the way, they undid the Evil Shadow Disguise Technique. They saw disguised martial artists searching the crowd, some glancing at them but not recognizing them.

Xu Xiaoyan whispered, “That must be the Ghost Extreme Sect. The three Evil Lotus factions know about the Evil Shadow Disguise Technique. Seeing our similar builds, they would be suspicious. And the Moon Lotus Pavilion knows my true face. Only the Ghost Extreme Sect, seeing our completely different appearances, wouldn’t suspect us.”

Shi Hao, holding her hand, walked slowly through the crowd, “The good news is, Dàxīng City isn’t the Ghost Extreme Sect or the Evil Lotus factions’ territory, and they’re fighting each other. This is our opportunity. The bad news is, the Emerald Beauty is a significant matter. It might attract many experts from both sides.”

Xu Xiaoyan chuckled, “It seems the Evil Lotus factions’ experts haven’t arrived yet. Aunt Ting was probably warning us about the Ghost Extreme Sect. But they’re fast. There were quite a few of them just now… hmm.”

Shi Hao looked at her, “What is it?”

Xu Xiaoyan said, “The demonic sects prefer operating in the shadows, controlling the gangs and factions on the surface. Many of the gangs in Dàxīng City are probably controlled by the Ghost Extreme Sect. I wouldn’t even be surprised if one of the three gangs and six societies is entirely their creation.”

She giggled, “We’ve stirred up a hornet’s nest without even getting the honey. We don’t even have the Emerald Beauty. It’s strange. It was following you. Where did it go?”

Shi Hao, seeing her cheerful demeanor, her beauty even more striking now that her disguise was gone, thought, She’s still smiling after all this. She has a strong heart.

Suddenly, the sound of galloping horses echoed from ahead. A group of barbarian soldiers cleared the street, pushing the crowd to the sides. Shi Hao and Xu Xiaoyan stepped onto the steps of a nearby shop.

A group of people, escorted by soldiers, passed by. Shi Hao looked at them and froze… What’s she doing here?

Dàxīng City was becoming more and more interesting.

Chapter 78: The Dregs of Society

Shi Hao got dressed, opened the door, and saw Xu Xiaoyan standing there.

He asked, puzzled, “What’s so urgent this early in the morning?”

Xu Xiaoyan grinned, “We’re gathering information, of course. The early bird gets the worm. Don’t be lazy.”

Shi Hao said, “The early worm gets eaten. There’s nothing wrong with being lazy.”

Despite his words, he quickly washed up and left the monastery with Xu Xiaoyan, wandering the streets.

Xu Xiaoyan wore a crimson dress and carried a short sword at her waist. She had also insisted he bring his sword.

As they walked, Shi Hao glanced at her. The curves of her figure, accentuated by the dress, were surprisingly alluring. She was more attractive than he had initially thought.

They spent the morning wandering the streets and alleys, disguised with the Evil Shadow Disguise Technique.

Shi Hao asked, “Where exactly are we going?”

Xu Xiaoyan said, “What’s the most important thing in a new city? Information, of course. In the martial world, without information, you’re like a blind man, stumbling around.”

She looked up and said, “Found it!”

Shi Hao looked. It was just an ordinary-looking building at the end of an alley, a tattered flag hanging by the entrance, its grey surface embroidered with a chaotic, indecipherable pattern, something between a dragon and a snake.

Xu Xiaoyan pulled him along, “Let’s go!” She led him around the building to a back entrance where two large men were chatting.

The two men glanced at them, but Xu Xiaoyan ignored them and pulled Shi Hao inside.

The men didn’t stop them and resumed their conversation.

They entered a courtyard, walked through the building, past a group of men playing mahjong, who also ignored them.

Xu Xiaoyan looked around, “Here!” She pulled him into a side room with a descending passage.

At the bottom, Shi Hao found himself in a hidden tavern, filled with martial artists chatting and drinking.

Shi Hao asked, “What is this place?”

    Xu Xiaoyan said, “The Dregs.”

Shi Hao looked at her, “The Dregs?”

Xu Xiaoyan pulled him towards the counter, “The best place in the martial world to gather information.” They sat down on two stools, “Shopkeeper.”

An old man behind the counter, wiping it with a cloth, said casually, “What can I get for you two?”

Xu Xiaoyan placed a piece of broken silver on the counter, “We’re looking for work in Dàxīng City.”

The old man flicked his wrist, and the silver disappeared into his sleeve, a subtle display of skill. He looked at the young man with the hooked nose and menacing aura and the plain-looking girl, “New faces in Dàxīng City. It’s a turbulent time here. Be careful. If you’re looking for fame, this isn’t the place to be.”

Xu Xiaoyan smiled, “We’re not looking for fame, just money.”

The old man pushed a stack of papers towards them, “Money is good! Dàxīng is a good place to make money, plenty of opportunities, as long as you have the skills. But be careful. Your life is more important than money.”

Xu Xiaoyan said wistfully, “In the martial world, we don’t always have a choice.”

The old man said, “Such words from someone so young? You’ll understand what the martial world is truly like when you’re older.”

Xu Xiaoyan pulled Shi Hao to a corner and sat down, dividing the stack of papers between them.

Shi Hao looked through them. They were like news bulletins from the martial world, all printed.

—”One Hundred Poisonous Mysterious Insects,’ one of the Four Dragon Serpent Generals of the Shark Dragon Gang, led an attack on the Grieving Inquiry Sect, wiping them out.”

—”The Heartless Young Master’s cultivation has reached the fifth rank. He challenged the leader of the Mystic Virtue Society, who refused to fight. The Heartless Young Master’s fame in Dàxīng City has grown.”

—”The successor of the Setting Sun Palm attacked the Tiger Warrior Sect to avenge his master’s death, killing seven before being surrounded and killed.”

These were recent events in the martial world, mostly around Dàxīng City. Most entries didn’t mention names, only nicknames or titles.

Those without nicknames were referred to as “the successor of the Setting Sun Palm” or “the Swordsman of Mount Tian Tai.”

Although Shi Hao had entered the martial world, he wasn’t familiar with its affairs. He read through the bulletins with interest.

After the news section, there were various advertisements and job postings.

—”The ‘Burning Blade Hegemon’ has established the Hegemonic Blade Sect and is recruiting skilled martial artists to join him in his grand undertaking.”

—”The Invincible Sect is seeking a new name due to constant challenges from experts. Seeking suggestions from skilled martial artists. Handsome reward offered for the chosen name.”

—”The accountant of the Flood Dragon Branch of the Heaven and Earth Gang was assassinated. Seeking a skilled accountant. Generous salary and excellent protection provided.”

—”Seeking assassin. Target: ninth-rank. Reward: one hundred taels. Serious inquiries only.”

Shi Hao said, impressed, “They really have everything here.” He looked at Xu Xiaoyan, understanding why she seemed so knowledgeable. This was clearly a valuable source of information.

Xu Xiaoyan chuckled, “This place is called ‘The Dregs.’ It’s essentially a martial arts sect operating at the lowest level, dealing in information. Almost every city has a place like this.

“Not everyone knows about it, but those who do understand its importance in the martial world. Information flows downwards, like water.

“It’s like a basin, collecting all sorts of information. It’s up to you to find what you need.”

She giggled and leaned closer, “Like your nickname in the martial world, for example. Hee hee, you probably don’t even know, do you? Everyone here knows it.”

Shi Hao was stunned, “Me? A nickname? I have a nickname in the martial world?”

Xu Xiaoyan showed him one of the bulletins. Shi Hao looked and saw a short paragraph.

—”A new face has appeared in the martial world, background unknown, a seventh-rank expert, who killed both the ‘Nether Iron Bow’ wielder of the Chi Mu family and the ‘Flying Scorpion Blade’ of the Six Gates, as well as the head of the Yuan Dan Huo family and several others. Having just entered the martial world, he’s already on the Blacklist, earning him the nickname ‘Mad Blade Hero’!”

Shi Hao was speechless, “Mad Blade Hero? Who came up with that?” It sounded so generic.

And why both “mad” and “hero”?

Xu Xiaoyan giggled, “It must have been those people from Dark Thunder. The name spread quickly. Hee hee, Mad Blade Hero, Mad Blade Hero…”

She clutched her stomach, laughing, pounding the table with her other hand.

Shi Hao thought for a moment and said, his head aching, “It must be them. Mad Blade… I only used a saber in front of them.”

Xu Xiaoyan chuckled, “It’s not easy to get a nickname that sticks, let alone one that’s recorded in ‘The Dregs’ bulletins, and even fewer with the word ‘hero’ in it.”

“It’s because they respect you that your nickname spread so quickly, and because they consider you a ‘hero’ that your nickname includes that word. Many people in the martial world want a good reputation, but not everyone earns the title of ‘hero.’”

Shi Hao thought about it. She had a point.

But he still felt the name was too generic. He should have chosen one himself and asked them to spread it.

Suddenly, he sensed someone nearby and turned around.

A tall woman in a black dress with red floral embroidery, her face partially concealed by a veil, stood beside them. She was clearly a beauty.

Xu Xiaoyan also turned and sighed softly, “Aunt Ting, I didn’t expect to find you in Dàxīng City.”

The woman, her figure graceful, sat down on a nearby chair, her eyes sparkling.

As she looked at them, Shi Hao and Xu Xiaoyan felt their bodies and minds lock, as if caught in a vise.

Shi Hao instantly knew she was at least mid-rank, a sixth or even fifth-rank expert, and a demonic cultivator.

“You’re in big trouble,” the woman said calmly.

Shi Hao sneered, discreetly circulating the Sacred Heart Clear Mirror Technique, leaning back casually, “What kind of trouble?”

The woman looked at him, a flicker of surprise in her eyes.

Xu Xiaoyan chuckled, “Your soul-snatching technique won’t work on him, Aunt Ting. He probably knows more about the Night Charm Demonic scriptures than you do.”

Shi Hao thought, So that’s a technique from the Night Charm Demonic scriptures as well?

He hadn’t known about it, but although her soul-snatching technique was powerful, with the Sacred Heart Clear Mirror Technique, he could even resist Su Mei’s seductive techniques, so he wasn’t easily affected.

But how could this woman know he also practiced secret techniques of the Taisu Immortal Pavilion?

The Sacred Heart Clear Mirror Technique was invisible, its effects undetectable. She was inwardly shocked, thinking, Could he really know the Night Charm Demonic scriptures so well, even the counter to my soul-snatching technique?

She sighed softly, her voice softening, “You’re in big trouble.”

Xu Xiaoyan said sadly, “Aunt Ting, are you finally going to turn against me? Although my mother betrayed the Moon Lotus Pavilion, she was still your Pavilion Lord once. I thought you might still have some affection for her.”

The woman sighed, “That affection isn’t enough for us to let you keep the Emerald Beauty.”

Xu Xiaoyan chuckled, “So even you think we have the Emerald Beauty? But the Snake Charmer from the Black Lotus Realm already searched us. We don’t have it. We only have that creepy doll that appeared out of nowhere…”

The woman looked at them, “That doll is the Emerald Beauty.”

    Chapter 77: Mysterious True Energy

Led by Chen Yan’er, Shi Hao and Xu Xiaoyan met Chen Chenyun, the abbot of Floating Cloud Monastery.

Chen Chenyun was Chen Yan’er’s paternal uncle. In the martial world, it was common to combine one’s surname and Daoist title, so he was also known as Chen Chenyun.

He was around twenty-six or twenty-seven years old, his physique strong and muscular due to his external martial arts training. He had a wife, Madam Wang, and a son and a daughter, who were currently arguing, forcing him to mediate.

Chen Yan’er intervened, calming the two children, who, with their fickle nature, quickly ran off to play together.

She introduced Shi Hao and Xu Xiaoyan to Chen Chenyun and asked if they could stay in the west wing.

Chen Chenyun readily agreed, “Guests are always welcome. There are plenty of empty rooms in the west wing. The disciples and the children who live here all eat together. Two more won’t make a difference. Feel free to stay.”

Shi Hao said, “Thank you, Abbot.”

Chen Chenyun smiled, “Don’t mention it. Yan’er has been a great help to me these past few years. Since you’re her friends, consider this your home.”

Chen Yan’er led them to the west wing, then asked, perhaps intentionally, “Do you two want one room or two?”

    Xu Xiaoyan said, “Chen Yan’er…”

Chen Yan’er giggled, “Don’t worry, I’ll arrange two rooms for you. But even if you wanted one room, that’s fine too. The guest rooms in the west wing have inner and outer chambers. You can each take one. And even if you both sleep in the inner chamber, no one would know.”

Xu Xiaoyan said, “Are you done?”

Chen Yan’er said, “Yes, yes, I’m done!”

She showed them to their rooms and let them unpack.

As dinner time approached, she led them to the monastery’s dining hall. The food was decent, but the many children running around made it quite noisy.

After dinner, Shi Hao returned to his room. The Heroic Deeds Blade and the sword he had borrowed from Daoist Tie Yu were wrapped in cloth, along with the Illusory Sea Spirit Fruit, which, thankfully small, was easy to carry in its jade box.

He sat cross-legged on the bed, circulating the Gathering Essence Flowing Pearl Technique and the Unfettered Demon’s Boundless Art.

The two techniques flowed endlessly within him, his power steadily increasing.

He thought to himself, although he had obtained the Illusory Sea Spirit Fruit and the “weapon that has killed a thousand people,” he still needed the Molting Snake Reverse Scale, the Tri-colored Qilin Grass, the Carriage Horse Mushroom, a matricide’s heart, and the blood of an Undying Child.

Xu Xiaoyan had asked the organizer of the Red Hill Gathering to help him find the first three ingredients, although it depended on luck.

The matricide’s heart and the Undying Child’s blood, however, were more troublesome. Demonic rituals were truly bizarre. These items weren’t particularly valuable, yet they were difficult to obtain.

Of course, it seemed unlikely he would master both the Gathering Essence Flowing Pearl Technique and the Unfettered Demon’s Boundless Art before the next full moon, so he still had some time.

Advancing a rank every month wouldn’t make him a genius, but a monster.

Shi Hao focused his mind and tried to project the Gathering Essence Flowing Pearl true energy while simultaneously circulating the Unfettered Demon’s Boundless Art.

Normally, his Daoist and demonic foundations, residing in his upper and lower dantians respectively, balanced and reinforced each other.

Now, he tried to project one while containing the other, curious about the result.

He discovered that the Gathering Essence Flowing Pearl true energy, although circulating around him, couldn’t be projected outwards, and the flow of the Unfettered Demon’s Boundless Art slowed, unable to form the demonic vortex.

It seemed that while cultivating both techniques simultaneously wasn’t a problem, using them together was more difficult.

It wasn’t that they couldn’t be used together, but their opposing natures, one expanding outwards, the other contracting inwards, created a constant friction and struggle for dominance.

Usually, when he used the Gathering Essence Flowing Pearl Technique, his demonic energy remained dormant in his lower dantian, and vice versa. Occasionally switching between them was like a fleeting spark, a rapid transition.

Like when he had fought Zhuo Mulan, he had almost exhausted his demonic energy before suddenly unleashing his Daoist true energy, catching her off guard.

Although the switch had been quick, there was still a distinct sequence.

Now, trying to use both simultaneously, he couldn’t fully project or contain either, as if the energies themselves were confused.

The two forces pulled in opposite directions, their close proximity creating friction and hindering each other.

He realized that although he couldn’t use any techniques in this state, this convergence of opposing energies might be a powerful defensive barrier.

He had used a similar method against Zhuo Mulan, but it had relied on a rapid switch, only effective against residual energy.

If she had attacked with her full power, he wouldn’t have been able to withstand it.

But using both energies simultaneously for defense would force the enemy’s attack to penetrate two layers, ice and fire, significantly weakening it.

Shi Hao thought, This could be useful in certain situations.

    Suddenly, he noticed something else.

As the two opposing energies rubbed against each other, a faint, new type of true energy emerged.

It was incredibly subtle, like the negligible heat generated by friction, formless and almost imperceptible, its presence barely detectable.

    What is this? he wondered.

Was it… fusion? Like oxygen and metal combining to form an oxide. He wasn’t sure if the analogy was accurate, but a new, mysterious true energy was definitely being created in this unique situation.

Intrigued, Shi Hao circulated his Daoist and demonic energies in opposite directions, each completing a cycle through his meridians.

Previously, although they had been in a state of subtle conflict, they had generally maintained a balance, like two rivers flowing side by side, their waters distinct. And when he cultivated, they flowed smoothly through his meridians.

Now, however, they clashed head-on, flowing in opposite directions.

The impact caused a tearing pain in his meridians.

After half an hour, he couldn’t endure it any longer and stopped, his body covered in cold sweat, his meridians aching.

But the new true energy had increased slightly.

He slowly exhaled, calming his agitated energies.

Only now did he truly feel like he was “cultivating.” Before this, he had simply maintained the balance between his Daoist and demonic energies, letting them grow naturally.

He got up, took out a change of clothes, and left his room, heading down the corridor.

He had asked earlier, and there was a bathing area in another courtyard for the male disciples and the children who lived at the monastery.

Passing Xu Xiaoyan’s window, he heard two girls talking, mentioning his name.

He stopped and listened. The sound of splashing water and giggling came from within, a faint mist clinging to the paper windowpane. The two girls were bathing together.

“I don’t believe that nothing happened between you and that Shi Hao while traveling together,” Chen Yan’er’s voice, laced with laughter, said, “Especially at night, alone together…”

“As if I would be alone with him!” Xu Xiaoyan said, exasperated, “Yan’er, you’re becoming quite the gossip.”

Chen Yan’er giggled, “I heard that people in the martial world live dangerous lives, always on the edge of death, so it’s easy for them to fall in love. And with the world so vast, and not knowing when they’ll meet again, they just… do it.”

Xu Xiaoyan said, “You have quite the imagination. Everyone in the martial world knows it’s a dangerous life. We’re all cautious. Men are afraid of encountering demonic witches, and women are afraid of encountering scumbags. Who would trust someone so easily and just… sleep with them?

“Besides, what if you get pregnant?”

Chen Yan’er said, “I heard that if your internal energy is strong enough, you can just… expel the man’s essence, and then you won’t get pregnant.”

Xu Xiaoyan, clearly hearing this for the first time, said, “Really? Is that true?”

“Speaking of which,” Chen Yan’er said, “Xiao Yan, I didn’t notice it before, with your clothes on, but you’ve… grown quite a bit in these past three years…”

Xu Xiaoyan shrieked, “Don’t touch me!”

The sounds of splashing water and playful banter continued.

    Shi Hao quickly left.

He reached the courtyard with the bathing area, a pond fed by a mountain spring, wooden buckets scattered around, water everywhere. It seemed many children had bathed here recently.

He took a cold bath and changed his clothes. As he returned to his room, he could still hear the two girls chatting and laughing in the bath. Girls take forever, he thought.

He hung his wet clothes on a bamboo pole outside his window and went inside to rest.

The next morning, before he was even fully awake, a knock came at his door.

  • I, The Man Who’ll Conquer Both the Immortal Venerable and the Demon Empress 76

    Chapter 76: Chen Yan’er

Shi Hao and Xu Xiaoyan arrived at the foot of Rong Mountain and looked up.

The mountain wasn’t very tall but housed several Daoist temples. Shi Hao stopped a passerby, asked for directions to Floating Cloud Monastery, and then continued up the mountain with Xu Xiaoyan.

Xu Xiaoyan said, “It’s been three years. Her letter was from two years ago. They might have moved…”

Shi Hao chuckled, “You’re usually so bold and decisive. Why are you so hesitant about seeing an old friend?”

    Xu Xiaoyan said, “I…”

Shi Hao took her hand and, mimicking her usual tone, said, “Let’s go!”

They arrived at Floating Cloud Monastery, a fairly large temple complex. A stone tablet by the entrance, covered in seal script, described the monastery’s history, which seemed quite ancient.

The gate was unguarded. Inside, over twenty boys were practicing martial arts in the courtyard, led by a middle-aged Daoist priest. Several other people were coming and going.

Someone approached them, “Are you two here to learn martial arts?”

Shi Hao looked at Xu Xiaoyan, “What’s your friend’s name again?”

Xu Xiaoyan said, “Her name is Chen Yan’er.”

Shi Hao smiled, “Yan’er? And your alias is Que’er?” He turned to the Daoist priest, “We’re looking for Chen Yan’er.”

The Daoist priest, unconcerned, called out, “Junior Sister Yan, someone’s here for you!”

A young woman in a green Daoist robe emerged. She looked at Shi Hao, puzzled, her expression clearly saying, “I don’t know you.”

Then she looked at Xu Xiaoyan and suddenly exclaimed, “Xiao Yan? Is that you?”

The young woman in the Daoist robe rushed over and grabbed Xu Xiaoyan’s hands, her voice filled with excitement, “When did you arrive in Dàxīng? Why did it take you so long to visit me?”

Xu Xiaoyan also looked surprised, “Yan’er, you said you were going to find a handsome husband in Dàxīng. Why are you a Daoist nun now?”

Chen Yan’er said, “Nonsense! Why would I want to marry? Men are nothing but trouble.”

Xu Xiaoyan said, “That’s not what you said before.”

Chen Yan’er said, “I was young and foolish. And you! You said you would never marry. Why have you suddenly brought a man here? Are you showing off?” She pulled Xu Xiaoyan aside, glanced at the young man, and whispered, “Your husband?”

Xu Xiaoyan blushed and whispered, “Don’t be ridiculous. We’re just traveling together. And you, even if you don’t want to marry, why become a Daoist nun?”

Chen Yan’er chuckled, “I’m just wearing the clothes. This place looks like a Daoist temple, but it’s actually a martial arts school. My grandfather and I are staying here. They needed help, so I joined the monastery.”

“And what’s wrong with being a Daoist nun? Only ordained nuns can’t marry. Lay practitioners can.”

Xu Xiaoyan asked, “Where’s Grandpa Chen? Is he well?”

Chen Yan’er said, “He’s playing chess in the back garden. I’ll take you to him.” She tugged at Xu Xiaoyan’s arm and glanced at the young man, “Aren’t you going to introduce your man?”

“I told you, he’s not my man!” Xu Xiaoyan said, swatting her hand away.

She led Shi Hao over and introduced him, “This is Shi Hao, from West Shu.”

Chen Yan’er waited, then asked, “That’s it?”

Xu Xiaoyan said, “What else do you want to know?”

Chen Yan’er pulled her aside, “Like, what do his parents do? Is he married? Does he have a fiancée? What kind of girls does he like…?”

Xu Xiaoyan said, exasperated, “What are you talking about? I didn’t bring him here to set him up with you.”

Chen Yan’er waved her hands, “Oh, misunderstanding, misunderstanding! I would never touch your man. Don’t worry.”

“Worry my foot!” Xu Xiaoyan said, “Take me to your grandfather.”

As Chen Yan’er led them through the monastery, Xu Xiaoyan asked, “Is Floating Cloud Monastery just a martial arts school now? I thought Grandpa Chen said it was a large and influential sect.”

Chen Yan’er said, “It used to be, but not anymore.”

She lowered her voice, “Floating Cloud Monastery had powerful martial arts techniques, but they refused to submit to the Chongxian Sect, so they were forbidden from cultivating immortal ingredients and suffered greatly, gradually declining. The abbot is a good man, a relative of mine. Although he’s only in his twenties, he’s an eighth-rank expert.”

Xu Xiaoyan said, “If they’re forbidden from cultivating immortal ingredients and suppressed by the Chongxian Sect, how can they refine external elixirs?”

Chen Yan’er sighed, “Floating Cloud Monastery used to have many outer disciples, who were taught non-Daoist martial arts. The abbot reached the eighth rank through those techniques. So, although it still looks like a Daoist temple, it’s not really a Daoist sect anymore.”

Xu Xiaoyan said, “I see. That’s a pity.”

Chen Yan’er took her hand and said, “By the way, did you know Sister Jing Ya is also in Dàxīng City?”

Xu Xiaoyan stopped and looked at her in surprise, “Sister Jing Ya is here? I thought she married into the White Crane Gang. She should be in Wu’an Prefecture. Why is she here?”

Chen Yan’er said, “There was internal strife within the White Crane Gang, and her father-in-law was forced to leave Wu’an Prefecture with her and her husband. They were then recruited by the Brocade Dragon Gate. It’s one of the three gangs and six societies of Dàxīng City. I heard Vice Leader Shen Haixiong, the ‘Drunken God Spear,’ values her husband’s knowledge and has given him a high position, managing many of their businesses.

“She visits us sometimes, but she and her husband left for Luo Lake yesterday. They won’t be back for a few days. If you’re not in a hurry to leave, you might be able to see her then.”

Xu Xiaoyan smiled, “I’m not in a hurry. By the way, you mentioned the three gangs and six societies of Dàxīng City. Which ones are they?”

Chen Yan’er chuckled, “You’re still the same, always asking about the local gangs wherever you go. I only know the three gangs are the Shark Dragon Gang, the Ascending Heroes Gang, and the Heaven and Earth Gang. And the six societies include the Mystic Virtue Society, the Brocade Dragon Gate, the White Sword Society, and the Leopard Gate… I can’t remember the other two.”

“Although they’re called the ‘three gangs and six societies,’ there are many other gangs as well. These are just the largest. But even so, the Shark Dragon Gang only rose to prominence ten years ago, and the Ascending Heroes Gang twenty years ago. Only the Heaven and Earth Gang is older, a long-established gang in Dàxīng City. Although these gangs can be quite powerful, they rise and fall quickly.”

“The reason I can’t remember the other two societies isn’t because I have a bad memory, but because two of them were just eliminated this year. I don’t know which gangs have replaced them yet.”

She suddenly remembered something, pulled Xu Xiaoyan aside, and whispered, “Speaking of which, I heard there’s a mysterious female thief operating in the Jiangzhe region, nicknamed Night Lily. It’s you, isn’t it?”

Xu Xiaoyan glanced at Shi Hao and smiled, “No need to whisper. He knows.”

Chen Yan’er exclaimed, “Oh my, oh my, oh my…”

Xu Xiaoyan said, exasperated, “I’m telling you, he knows. What’s with the ‘oh my’?”

Shi Hao smiled, “There are many things I don’t know. If you don’t mind, tell me more.”

Chen Yan’er quickly said, “Alright, alright. Let me tell you, when Xiao Yan was little, she was very sensitive and difficult to get along with. She…”

Xu Xiaoyan pulled her along, “Stop gossiping. Let’s go!”

They reached the back garden, where several elderly men were playing chess. Chen Yan’er called out, “Grandpa, look who’s here!”

An old man, sitting at one side of a chessboard, turned around, “Isn’t that Xiao Yan? It’s been a few years. You’ve grown so much!”

Xu Xiaoyan approached and smiled, “Grandpa Chen.”

Old Chen chuckled, “Good! Good!” He looked at the young man beside her, “Your husband?”

Xu Xiaoyan: “…” What is wrong with everyone?

At the same time, on Yongle Street in Dàxīng City, a luxurious carriage was heading towards Mount Qian Yuan.

Inside sat Zhuo Mulan and her disciple, Du Yuejiao. Zhuo Mulan, her hair in a Daoist bun, sat on one side, while her disciple, holding a beautiful doll, sat on the other.

They looked out the window at the bustling street.

The Chongxian Sect’s main temple was located on Mount Dong Yang, known as the “Hidden Grotto Heaven,” but they also had a main temple in Dàxīng City, and they were now returning there.

They sat in silence, each lost in their own thoughts.

After a while, Zhuo Mulan, as if startled from her reverie, turned to her disciple.

Since that young man named Shi Hao had left, she had noticed Yuejiao becoming quieter, often lost in thought or blushing for no apparent reason.

Zhuo Mulan sighed softly and looked at the doll in her disciple’s arms.

Although dolls were considered ominous in some folk traditions, the Daoist sects didn’t pay much attention to such superstitions.

But this doll was so beautiful and pristine that she found it strange. However, since Yuejiao was so attached to it, she let her keep it.

“Yuejiao? Yuejiao?” Zhuo Mulan called softly.

    Du Yuejiao turned, startled, “Huh?”

Then she realized, “Oh, Master, what is it?”

Zhuo Mulan lowered her voice, “We’re almost at Mount Qian Yuan. Elder Zhi Fa will likely ask about your uncle again. I’ve written to the Kun Zhen Courtyard, and your Grandmaster Dan Ying will speak on our behalf. Just tell them the truth. There’s nothing to worry about. We didn’t know anything, after all.”

Du Yuejiao nodded and looked out the window again. After a while, she whispered, “Master, do you think Uncle defected to protect us? That’s why he didn’t tell us anything?”

Zhuo Mulan sighed softly, “Perhaps…” She didn’t say anything more.

After a while, Du Yuejiao looked out the window and said, surprised, “What’s she doing here?”

She had seen a familiar face!
