Chapter 233: On the East Sea

The five of them ascended Three Peaks Mountain.

Three Six Gates agents remained at the Daoist temple dedicated to Wang Lingguan.

The Six Gates had set a trap here last night, but due to Shi Hao’s interference, their target had escaped. Although they kept a watch on the temple, they didn’t expect the fugitives to return, so they only left a small contingent behind.

Shi Hao and the others quickly dispatched the three agents.

They went to a rock garden behind the temple and, following Daoist Zhong’s instructions, turned two hidden mechanisms within the rocks. A nearby pavilion shifted, revealing a hidden passage.

Leaving Huan Tingting to guard the entrance, they entered the passage.

It led to a hidden chamber where they found the sea chart, the Water Repelling Pills, and a small booklet describing the method for entering the Crystal Palace.

Shi Hao unfurled the chart and located Flower Coral Island, marked with a small symbol, “According to Old Zhong, the entrance to the Crystal Palace is on this island.” He looked up at Yue Yaotai, “Is this the route you took, Branch Leader?”

Yue Yaotai shook her head, “There are several ways to reach the Crystal Palace, but those who know them keep them secret. The Crystal Palace contains many rare immortal ingredients and valuable pearls, a closely guarded secret.”

“I went with someone else, traveling by sea and using special equipment to dive down, following an underwater current to reach the palace. It was a complicated and dangerous journey.”

Shi Hao asked, “Why would you risk your life to enter the Crystal Palace, Branch Leader? Was there some ingredient you needed for a demonic ritual?”

Yue Yaotai said calmly, “Not exactly. There’s a type of fish in the Crystal Palace that, when cooked with black plums, has medicinal properties. I was… curious.”

Xu Xiaoyan looked up, startled, “Aunt Yue…”

Yue Yaotai said softly, “I happened to be traveling to the East Sea, so I decided to visit the Crystal Palace. It wasn’t because you were sick.”

Shi Hao murmured, “The Henggong Fish… The Classic of Divine Anomalies describes it as ‘a fish shaped like a carp, but red, its flesh impervious to blades, immune to boiling, killed only by black plums, its flesh a cure for all diseases.’ I thought it was just a myth. It actually exists?”

He then said, “Although we have the map, Old Zhong is injured and can’t sail. How are we getting to the island?”

Yue Yaotai said, “That’s not a problem. I can arrange a ship and a crew. The map is the most important thing.”

Shi Hao smiled, “In that case, I’ll leave it to you, Branch Leader.”

Yue Yaotai said, “It’s my pleasure, Young Master.”

They left the mountain that night and arrived in Zhenjiang the next day.

Although there were barbarian patrols and Six Gates agents along the way, having returned to their original appearances, they weren’t recognized.

And although Yue Yaotai had encountered Bei Lingyu, the Eastern Gate Constable King, she had also been disguised.

Zhenjiang was located at the mouth of the Long River, where it flowed into the East Sea.

They stayed in Zhenjiang for a day. Yue Yaotai remained with Shi Hao, while Huan Tingting made the necessary arrangements.

The next afternoon, they went to the docks, where Huan Tingting had secured a fu ship, a large, sturdy vessel commonly used for coastal trade.

The fu ship, with its pointed bow, wide stern, and upturned ends, designed for both trade and warfare, equipped with a ram, was a fast and stable vessel, said to be able to “crush enemies like a chariot.”

A middle-aged woman called “Aunt Fu” captained the ship, with six young women as crew.

The six young women, clearly skilled martial artists, two dressed in black, the other four in simple dresses, were all disciples of the Moon Lotus Pavilion.

They were quiet and obedient, following Aunt Fu’s instructions without question.

Having spent time with Sha Lingshan, Plum Blossom Lady, and Peach Blossom Lady, Shi Hao found the Moon Lotus Pavilion’s atmosphere strangely… oppressive.

These disciplined and subservient young women were all carefully selected, their beauty exceeding that of their peers.

“Is the Moon Lotus Pavilion always like this?” he asked Xu Xiaoyan, pulling her aside.

Xu Xiaoyan muttered, “It’s always been like this. It’s not just Aunt Yue’s strictness. It’s their tradition, passed down through generations. It’s ingrained in their culture.

“That’s why, although they treated me well, I couldn’t stay.”

Shi Hao thought, Her personality is definitely not suited for the Moon Lotus Pavilion.

With Xiaoyan’s free spirit, she would be more comfortable with Sha Lingshan and her companions.

He realized that these girls, having grown up in this environment, would inevitably be affected. And as they progressed in their cultivation, they would perpetuate this oppressive culture.

It was a miracle that Xiaoyan, having lived there for several years, hadn’t become like them.

He thought, The reunification of the three factions can’t just be about power. I’ll have to encourage more interaction between the Moon Lotus Pavilion and the Mirror Flower Water Moon Pavilion.

He felt more relaxed and comfortable with Sha Lingshan and her companions.

But with these Moon Lotus Pavilion disciples, he felt constrained, their constant, silent presence, their heads bowed, their faces expressionless, unsettling.

But the Moon Lotus Pavilion’s culture wasn’t something he could easily change, not now, not yet.

He wondered about the atmosphere in the Black Lotus Realm.

He had only interacted with Long Niu so far, and she seemed… relatively normal, not as cold and aloof as Huan Tingting.

Of course, Long Niu, with her short stature, wouldn’t have been accepted into the Moon Lotus Pavilion.

The fu ship left the docks, the wind filling its sails, carrying them out to sea.

The ship was well-stocked with food and refreshments. Shi Hao, Xu Xiaoyan, and Xiang Gu sat on the deck, eating and chatting.

Neither Shi Hao nor Yue Yaotai mentioned the Penglai Mirage Pavilion to Xu Xiaoyan… a silent agreement.

And as for Xiang Gu, as long as no one mentioned the “Holy Pavilion,” she seemed to have forgotten about it.

The sea was calm, the water a deep blue, the sky above a clear, endless expanse, merging seamlessly with the horizon.

At noon, a fleet of ships appeared in the distance, each one larger than their fu ship, six of them carrying massive, wooden constructs on their decks.

These constructs, resembling folded buildings, were a strange and impressive sight.

Yue Yaotai approached Shi Hao and whispered, “That’s the Sea Shark Gang.”

One of the ships, noticing them, changed course and headed towards them.

Aunt Fu, sensing danger, ordered the six disciples to raise the sails.

The approaching ship was filled with martial artists, a large man in a brocade robe, a saber on his back, standing at the front, shouting, “Stop your ship!”

    “Go!” Yue Yaotai said.

The fu ship accelerated, turning sharply, away from the fleet. The pursuing warship gained on them, its crew loading a catapult, but it was still too far away to be effective.

It slowed down, then turned back, not wanting to stray too far from the fleet.

“I wonder where they’re going,” Shi Hao said thoughtfully, “They seem to be preparing for a naval battle.”

Xu Xiaoyan snorted, “The Sea Shark Gang are just barbarian lapdogs, bullies and thugs. They’re probably up to no good.”

Yue Yaotai approached them, “It’s good they didn’t attack us. Although our ship is sturdy, we wouldn’t stand a chance against them in a naval battle.”

She shook her head, “The Sea Shark Gang, with the barbarian court’s backing, controls the lower Long River. Even our most discreet operations are struggling to survive.”

Xu Xiaoyan glanced at Yue Yaotai, the wind causing the front of her robe to flutter slightly, revealing the curves of her figure despite the tight sash.

She looked at Shi Hao, who was also… admiring the view, and kicked him discreetly.

Shi Hao couldn’t help it… the wind was strong.

Of the three Evil Lotus Sect leaders, Yue Yaotai was definitely the most… well-endowed. And her figure was undeniably attractive.

He turned away, looking out at the vast expanse of the sea, “We should reach Flower Coral Island by evening.”

Xu Xiaoyan, her gaze also fixed on the horizon, had been searching the sea since they left Zhenjiang, hoping to find something, anything, in this vast, blue expanse.

But it was like searching for a needle in a haystack.

Shi Hao wanted to help her, but he couldn’t. He glanced at Xiang Gu, who was still eating pastries and playing with her collection of creepy crawlies, oblivious to everything else.

Of all of them, only she might know the location of the Penglai Mirage Pavilion.

But unless he was certain Xu Xiaoyan’s sister was there, he wouldn’t mention it.

The fu ship continued its journey, and as the sun began to set, they finally reached Flower Coral Island.

Chapter 232: A Smile with Killing Intent

At midnight, all was quiet. Suddenly, the two dogs chained outside the walls of the jail began barking.

Someone came out to check, looked around, but seeing nothing, yelled at the dogs to be quiet.

Shi Hao and Xu Xiaoyan, holding hands, their bodies enveloped in a black mist, floated over the walls, the Night Wanderer Talisman concealing them.

They entered the jail, their movements silent and their presence unseen. After a brief search, they found Daoist Zhong in a torture chamber, his body covered in whip marks, chained to a rack, barely conscious.

Two guards sat outside the cell, drinking and chatting.

Suddenly, one of the guards slumped forward, his head landing on the table.

The other guard chuckled, “You’re already drunk after just a few cups?”

Before he could finish, a gust of wind, and a hand struck his back.

Although he had some martial arts training, he was no match for Shi Hao. Before he could react, he collapsed, his face landing in a plate of food.

Shi Hao and Xu Xiaoyan materialized, searched the guards for the keys, opened the cell, and unchained Daoist Zhong.

Daoist Zhong’s eyes fluttered open. Xu Xiaoyan whispered, “Master Zhong?”

“Xiao… Xiao Yan?” he asked weakly.

“It’s me,” she whispered, “We’re here to rescue you.”

Shi Hao carried Daoist Zhong on his back, and they slipped out of the cell.

Suddenly, the sounds of commotion and the movement of troops came from outside.

To the northwest, flames erupted into the sky, thick smoke billowing.

The town’s guards rushed towards the fire, leaving the jail practically unguarded.

As they hurried through the jail, a voice shouted, “Who’s there?”

A saber slashed towards them. Xu Xiaoyan’s whip snaked out, coiling around the attacker’s throat. With a sharp tug, he spun around and collapsed.

Although the guard was down, the other jailers, alerted by the commotion, attacked.

Shi Hao kicked one aside, then, using his body as a springboard, leaped onto the wall.

Xu Xiaoyan’s whip cracked, her movements swift and precise, knocking down several other guards who tried to follow them.

As they reached the outer wall, another group of guards appeared, blocking their path. Suddenly, two Daoist priests emerged from behind the guards, cutting them down, then gestured, “Let’s go!”

Shi Hao, Xu Xiaoyan, and the two Daoist priests quickly escaped.

Shouts of “Assassins! Assassins!” echoed in the distance.

Although a jailbreak was a serious crime, it paled in comparison to the “assassination attempt” on the magistrate, which had drawn most of the guards away.

They escaped Qiantang Town, carrying Daoist Zhong.

Hiding in a safe location in the mountains, the two Daoist priests tended to his wounds.

Although his body was covered in whip marks and he had two broken bones, his injuries weren’t life-threatening.

“Why did you come back for this old man?” Daoist Zhong asked, sitting up, “Where are Madam Lin and her son?”

One of the Daoist priests said, “Don’t worry, Master Zhong. Thanks to Brother Hao, they’re safe. They’ve been escorted out of the area.”

Daoist Zhong looked at Shi Hao, his eyes filled with gratitude, “So you’re Hao Xinghua, the ‘Mad Blade Hero’? Thank you for saving this old man’s life. I would have rotted in that jail.”

Shi Hao, pleased that his nickname had spread, said, “Don’t mention it, Master Zhong. Hou Bomin, the Monkey Thief, asked me to come here and inquire about Xiao Yan’s whereabouts. I was just passing through.”

Daoist Zhong looked at Xu Xiaoyan and chuckled, “Looking for Xiao Yan, are you? Hahahaha…” His laughter sounded strange.

Xu Xiaoyan said, annoyed, “What’s so funny?”

Shi Hao smiled… His smile, due to the Evil Shadow Disguise Technique’s effects on his facial muscles, seemed more like a sneer, “Indeed. Hehehehe…”

Xu Xiaoyan rolled her eyes, “And what’s so funny about that?”

Daoist Zhong said, “That Xiao Yan girl… she has a good heart, but she keeps everything bottled up. Don’t take it personally. Although she’s always running off on her own, she’s actually quite kind. Keep an eye on her…”

Xu Xiaoyan said, exasperated, “Old man, you’re injured. Don’t talk so much.”

Shi Hao asked, “Master Zhong, I’m going to the Crystal Palace in the East Sea. What’s the best way to get there?”

Daoist Zhong said, “There are three known Crystal Palaces in the East Sea. The closest one has an entrance on Flower Coral Island. Unfortunately, I can’t help you myself, but I have a map of the area hidden in my temple.

“It’s well-hidden. And I also have some Water Repelling Pills. A single pill, combined with the proper breathing technique, allows a ranked martial artist to stay underwater for about three hours.

“Normally, you wouldn’t need them, but the Crystal Palace has been abandoned for a long time, and there are some… dangers inside. It’s best to be prepared. Xiao Yan, you remember the breathing technique, don’t you?

“I taught it to you when you were little.”

Xu Xiaoyan muttered, “Of course I remember… but I didn’t say I was going with him.”

Daoist Zhong chuckled, “If you don’t go to the East Sea, you won’t have peace of mind. And I’m glad you have a companion now. Someone to look after you. Remember, don’t be too fixated on your search. If you find her, that’s good. If not, let it go. There will be other opportunities. Don’t rush.”

Xu Xiaoyan said, “Old man, you’ve become quite talkative.”

She added, “We should move you to a safer location…”

“There’s no need,” Daoist Zhong looked at the two Daoist priests, “I’ll be in your care.”

He looked at Xu Xiaoyan, “You should go and do what you need to do.”

The two Daoist priests smiled, “We’ll take care of him, Miss.”

They helped Daoist Zhong up, one of them carrying him on his back, and left.

Watching them leave, Xu Xiaoyan muttered, “What was that all about?”

Shi Hao looked at her, smiling silently. Xu Xiaoyan turned to him, her eyes narrowed, “Why are you smiling like that? It’s creepy.”

Shi Hao said, “It’s just a smile. Why is it creepy?”

Xu Xiaoyan held up a small mirror, “Look at yourself.”

Shi Hao looked at his reflection in the moonlight… It was indeed a creepy smile, more like a sneer, a predatory grin.

If Xu Xiaoyan hadn’t known it was a side effect of the Evil Shadow Disguise Technique, she would have run away.

Shi Hao said, “Let’s go rejoin Branch Leader Yue and the others.”

They left, undoing their disguises along the way.

Shi Hao looked at Xu Xiaoyan, her true face now revealed, her features delicate and charming.

As they flew through the moonlit landscape, the cool autumn wind, sharp as a blade, nipped at their skin.

Shi Hao, after a moment of thought, asked, “Xiao Yan, have you ever met Xiang Gu before? Before the last Red Hill Gathering, I mean.”

Xu Xiaoyan looked at him, surprised, “Why do you ask?”

    “Just curious,” Shi Hao said.

Xu Xiaoyan shook her head, “I’ve never met her… why?” She looked at him intently.

Shi Hao said, “Nothing… just curious.”

Xu Xiaoyan’s curiosity piqued, she sped up, flew ahead of him, turned around, and, walking backwards, looked at him, her head tilted slightly, “What do you mean, ‘nothing’? Why would you ask? What about Xiang Gu? What does she have to do with me? Why did you ask if I’ve met her before? Why…?”

“Stop with the ‘whys’,” Shi Hao grabbed her hand and pulled her along, “Let’s go.”

Her hand, cold as ice, felt small and delicate in his. He held it between his palms, warming it gently.

His unexpected gesture made her blush. She swatted his hand playfully, “What are you doing? Aren’t you afraid your little Daoist lover will see and stab you with her sword?”

Shi Hao thought, She’s not here, is she?

They reached the forest outside Qiantang Town, where Yue Yaotai, Huan Tingting, and Xiang Gu were supposed to be waiting, but they weren’t there.

After a while, they arrived, hurrying towards them.

Xu Xiaoyan whispered, “Aunt Yue, Aunt Ting.”

Yue Yaotai nodded slightly, her greeting perfunctory.

Shi Hao asked, “Why are you so late?”

Yue Yaotai said, “We encountered a Six Gates expert and had to… lose him. It took some time.”

Shi Hao, surprised, asked, “A Six Gates expert?” He knew that Yue Yaotai, like Sha Lingshan, had reached the fourth rank. Although newly advanced, with their demonic techniques, they shouldn’t be so easily delayed.

Yue Yaotai said, “It was Bei Lingyu, the ‘Eastern Gate Constable King,’ one of the Six Gates’ Four Constable Kings. A fourth-rank expert. I didn’t expect to find him in Qiantang Town. If this had happened a month or two ago, I might not have been able to escape.”

Shi Hao pondered, “One of the Four Constable Kings… was he also here for Lin Jing’s family?”

Yue Yaotai shook her head, “Although capturing Lin Jing’s family would be a symbolic victory for the barbarian court, it’s not something that requires the attention of a Constable King. He must have other business here. Perhaps he’s just… involved in the search as well.”

Shi Hao said, “Regardless, let’s retrieve the map from Three Peaks Mountain and leave Qiantang.”

As they walked, Xu Xiaoyan kept glancing at Xiang Gu. Shi Hao’s question, and his subsequent silence, had made her even more curious.

Xiang Gu, noticing her stares, glanced back at her.

They continued glancing at each other, their curiosity evident.

  • I, The Man Who’ll Conquer Both the Immortal Venerable and the Demon Empress 231

Chapter 231: What Profit Is There?

The name Li Badao had stuck in Shi Hao’s mind, partly because it was unusual, partly because, of the various factions secretly supported by the Evil Lotus Sect, his was currently the most successful.

And he also had an adopted daughter, taken in when she was eleven, now sixteen.

But this adopted daughter had been raised by the Mirror Flower Water Moon Pavilion and planted beside him. She had almost succeeded in having him “killed” and replaced by her own people.

Fortunately, with the three factions reunited, the Mirror Flower Water Moon Pavilion and the Black Lotus Realm had shared information in time to prevent it. Otherwise, Li Badao would have died without knowing why.

Shi Hao had marveled at the demonic sects’ methods, their long-term planning, their insidious schemes. How could Li Badao have possibly suspected an eleven-year-old girl?

“Wait here,” Shi Hao said, “I might have a solution.”

Xu Xiaoyan looked up at him, “Really?”

Shi Hao smiled, “Don’t you trust me?” He turned and left.

He undid his disguise and hurried back to Haiyan County, not bothering with the main gate but scaling the walls and entering the inn, where he knocked softly on Yue Yaotai’s door.

She opened the door, fully dressed, and welcomed him in, “Young Master.”

“I found Xiaoyan,” he said, “But she’s in trouble.”

He explained the situation with Lin Jing’s family.

“Can you help them escape the barbarian army and the Six Gates, Branch Leader Yue?” he asked, “And also inform Long Niu and have Li Badao send someone to meet them?”

Yue Yaotai said, “The biggest problem isn’t the barbarian army or the Six Gates, but the Sea Shark Gang. They control the underworld in this region, not just the salt trade, but also smuggling and other illegal activities.

“We have some ships and connections here, some discreet business ventures. We can even bribe some of the Sea Shark Gang’s lower-ranking members to use their smuggling routes. As for the Yellow Heaven Army, Li Badao is Long Niu’s… associate. I’m not comfortable contacting him directly.

“But if you write a letter, Young Master, I can have it delivered to Long Niu discreetly. She can arrange everything. For Li Badao, offering sanctuary to Lin Jing’s family would earn him favor with the former members of Dark Thunder, strengthening his position.”

She hesitated, then asked softly, “But what do you gain from this, Young Master?”

Shi Hao thought, Sha Lingshan wouldn’t have asked that.

But Yue Yaotai, raised in the pragmatic, self-serving culture of the demonic sects, couldn’t understand his motives. Why go to such lengths to help a widow and her child?

He sighed, “I had no choice. Xiaoyan wants to help them. I couldn’t just… abandon her.” He shifted the responsibility to Xu Xiaoyan.

Yue Yaotai’s expression softened. She understood.

After all, Xu Xiaoyan had grown up in the Moon Lotus Pavilion, leaving only at the age of ten.

And although her mother was technically a traitor, Yue Yaotai, Zhu Ping, Huan Tingting, and the others still had some affection for their former senior sister.

And Xiaoyan herself was a beautiful young woman. It wasn’t surprising that the Young Master, a young man, would be… smitten.

For a young man to help a beautiful girl, hoping to… well… it was a perfectly understandable “profit.”

“I’ll make the arrangements,” she said.

Shi Hao knew the Moon Lotus Pavilion’s attitude towards Xu Xiaoyan, the former Pavilion Lord’s daughter, was complicated.

He had seen it when Huan Tingting had met with her in Dàxīng City.

“And one more thing,” he said, “Daoist Zhong. He’s been captured by the Six Gates. He often travels to the East Sea. He might be able to help us reach the Crystal Palace. Can you find out where he’s being held?”

“Consider it done, Young Master,” Yue Yaotai said.

Shi Hao wrote a letter to Long Niu, and then returned to his room.

Just before dawn, he heard Yue Yaotai, Zhu Ping, and Huan Tingting leaving.

He slept for a while, then, around noon, he went to check on Xiang Gu.

She seemed to have reversed her sleep cycle, always tired during the day.

Her door was slightly ajar. He knocked, but there was no response.

He opened the door and saw her sprawled on the bed, her arms outstretched, sleeping soundly, like a child.

He quietly closed the door and left.

Yue Yaotai returned around noon, “Everything is arranged, Young Master. Lin Jing’s family will be leaving tonight.

“But they can’t take too many people with them. Just Madam Lin, her son, and three others.

“We’ll transport them by boat to a location about a hundred li south. It’s a safe route, used for smuggling. We’ve bribed the officials in charge, even those from the Sea Shark Gang. They’ll cooperate.

“There’s a safe house there, where they’ll wait for Long Niu to contact Li Badao and arrange for the Yellow Heaven Army to meet them. And just in case, I’ll have Zhu Ping escort them.”

She paused, then added, “We’ve also located Daoist Zhong. He’s being held in the Qiantang Town jail.”

Shi Hao smiled, “You’re very efficient, Branch Leader Yue.”

After discussing the details with her, he left Haiyan County and returned to the forest where he had left Xu Xiaoyan and the others, changing his appearance along the way.

He rejoined Dai Liang, Lin Jing’s family, and Xu Xiaoyan, informing them of the escape plan.

He said, “Tonight, at a place called Stone Shore by the Qiantang River, a ship will be waiting for you. They’ll take you about a hundred li south.

“The Six Gates have set up checkpoints everywhere, assuming you’re still in the area. Leaving by sea is the safest option. But you can’t take too many people. Just Madam Lin, her son, and three others.

“I’ve already contacted the leader of the Yellow Heaven Army through other channels. They’ll send someone to meet you, and then you’ll be escorted to their territory, where even the barbarian army can’t reach you.”

Dai Liang and the others were overjoyed. Dai Liang said, “Thank you, Brother Hao. We couldn’t have done it without you.”

Shi Hao turned to Xu Xiaoyan, “Daoist Zhong is being held in the Qiantang Town jail.”

Xu Xiaoyan sighed in relief. His capture had been expected. As long as he was still alive, they could rescue him.

The two Daoist priests exchanged glances. One of them said, “Since only three can accompany Madam Lin tonight, we’ll leave her to you, Brother Dai. We’ll go to Qiantang Town and see if we can rescue Old Zhong.”

Dai Liang said, “Be careful. I don’t know when we’ll meet again.”

They had mostly been strangers before this, united by their shared desire to help Lin Jing’s family.

Now, with their mission almost complete, their paths would likely diverge again, the dangers of the jianghu making future reunions uncertain.

That night, they reached Stone Shore. A merchant ship was waiting, a woman standing on its deck.

It was Zhu Ping, the Crimson Lotus Fiery Blaze, disguised as an ordinary woman, dressed in simple clothes.

The woman with the infant, who also had some martial arts training, thanked Shi Hao, Xu Xiaoyan, and the two Daoist priests again, then boarded the ship with Dai Liang and the other two, and the ship quietly slipped away.

Shi Hao turned to Xu Xiaoyan and the two Daoist priests, “The Six Gates will be searching for you. Kill a few of them tomorrow morning, make it look like you were discovered and forced to defend yourselves, and then leave. That will keep them occupied in this area.”

Xu Xiaoyan chuckled, “You’re always scheming.”

The two Daoist priests also smiled, “Those barbarians and their Six Gates lapdogs are ruthless and cunning. A little trickery is justified.”

They turned back, and at daybreak, finding an opportunity, they killed a few isolated barbarian soldiers before leaving.

That night, they reached Qiantang Town.

Shi Hao said to Xu Xiaoyan, “A direct assault on the jail is too risky. Why don’t we use our magical weapons to infiltrate and rescue him while the two Daoist priests create a diversion outside?”

Xu Xiaoyan grabbed her hair in frustration, “I’ve used up all the Void Traversing Bricks. I only have three uses left on the Night Wanderer Talisman.”

The Night Wanderer Talisman contained the Night Wanderer divine crystal, while the Void Traversing Brick contained the Path Opener.

Combined, they were invaluable tools for infiltration and escape, but their uses were limited, and Xu Xiaoyan clearly hadn’t been conserving them.

Shi Hao said, “In that case, I have two… associates here. We’ll rescue him tonight, before they move him.”

He hurriedly left… He had already arranged for Yue Yaotai, Huan Tingting, and Xiang Gu to be in Qiantang Town.

    He soon returned.

He looked at the two Daoist priests, “It’s done. Xiao Yan and I will infiltrate the jail using the Night Wanderer Talisman. After midnight, there will be an ‘assassination attempt’ on the magistrate, creating a diversion.

“After most of the guards are gone, set a fire northwest of the jail and meet us at the east gate.”

The two Daoist priests, knowing his resourcefulness, readily agreed.

  • I, The Man Who’ll Conquer Both the Immortal Venerable and the Demon Empress 230

Chapter 230: Reunion Under the Moon

Shi Hao waited in the shadows until the Six Gates constables left, then he emerged from his hiding place.

After waiting for a while in the clearing, Little Emerald appeared, “Young Master.”

Shi Hao nodded and followed her into the mountains.

They traversed a winding path, crossing a deep ravine, and reached a secluded area at the foot of a cliff, its entrance hidden by thick vines.

Shi Hao sensed someone watching them from the shadows.

He stopped, about to speak, when a girl’s voice came from the darkness, “He’s one of us.”

The lookout, recognizing him as the young man who had helped them earlier, emerged from the trees, “This way, brother.”

Shi Hao followed him through the forest and down to the bottom of the ravine, where the tall, thin martial artist, the woman with the infant, the two Daoist priests, and the plain-looking girl were waiting.

“Thank you for your help,” the tall, thin man said, bowing, his voice filled with gratitude and surprise, “How did you find us?”

Shi Hao’s voice was low and serious, “Those barbarian lapdogs have retreated, but they won’t give up so easily.”

“I am Dai Liang,” the tall, thin man said, “May I ask your name?”

The plain-looking girl said softly, “He’s Hao Xinghua, the ‘Mad Blade Hero,’ recently added to the Blacklist.”

They all looked at him with renewed respect. Shi Hao’s reputation, although primarily in Dàxīng City, had spread, thanks to the Blacklist. Although unranked, below the top one hundred, his presence on the list, which circulated throughout the land, carried weight.

After all, being on the Blacklist meant something. He had killed members of the Chi Mu family, one of the four great barbarian families, and Xue Lang, the Flying Scorpion Blade of the Six Gates. Ordinary criminals weren’t included.

Dai Liang bowed respectfully, “So it’s Brother Hao. If it weren’t for your warning, we would have been surrounded.”

The others also expressed their gratitude.

Shi Hao said, “Don’t mention it. I was just passing by. I don’t know what happened, but I went to visit Daoist Zhong at the temple on Three Peaks Mountain this afternoon and found it occupied by Six Gates agents.

“I suspected they were up to no good, so I waited. When I saw another group heading towards the mountain, I knew they were planning an ambush, so I set a fire to warn you.”

One of the Daoist priests frowned, “Something must have happened to Old Zhong. Perhaps he was captured while trying to arrange our escape.”

The woman with the infant said, her voice filled with guilt and anxiety, “So many have died for us… We are deeply grateful for your kindness, but please, leave us now. We don’t want to endanger you any further. My husband wouldn’t want this.”

Dai Liang said firmly, “Don’t say that, Madam. Mr. Lin died fighting for a righteous cause. Although we never met him, we admire his courage and sacrifice. We won’t let his family perish. Please rest, Madam. We’ll find a way.”

The plain-looking girl tugged at Shi Hao’s arm, “Let’s talk,” and led him away.

The others, seeing they knew each other, didn’t comment.

Shi Hao and the girl sat down on a hillside, away from the others.

The moonlight, filtering through the thin clouds, illuminated the ground before them.

“What are you doing here?” the girl asked.

Shi Hao smiled, “I came looking for you. Believe it or not.”

The girl was Xu Xiaoyan, disguised with the Evil Shadow Disguise Technique.

He hadn’t expected to find her so soon.

She tilted her head slightly, looking at him sideways, “Did that old monkey tell you where to find me?”

Shi Hao said, “I’m on my way to the Crystal Palace in the East Sea. I need Dream Grass for my next breakthrough. It only grows there, and it has to be used quickly.”

Xu Xiaoyan, her hands clasped around her knees, looked towards the distant horizon, “The East Sea…”

Shi Hao said, “You were also going there, weren’t you? Why are you still here?”

Xu Xiaoyan snorted, “That old man told you everything, didn’t he?”

Shi Hao chuckled, “I’m the Young Master of the Evil Lotus Sect now. Yue Yaotai, Zhu Ping, and Huan Tingting are also in a town near the Qiantang River.

“They wouldn’t dare hide anything from me. You left so suddenly; it was obvious something had happened. I just asked them.”

“So, you were going to the East Sea. Why are you still here?”

Xu Xiaoyan glanced back, then lowered her voice, “I was, but something came up, and I had to go… somewhere else.”

“That woman and her child…” Shi Hao gestured towards the small group.

Xu Xiaoyan said, “Her husband was Lin Jing, Hero Fu’s strategist.”

Shi Hao suddenly understood. Fu Shiyuan and his rebels in the Changbai Mountains, despite their eventual defeat, had put up a valiant fight against the barbarian army, even achieving several significant victories, forcing the barbarians to deploy a large number of troops and resources.

Their resistance had inspired other rebellions across the land, giving them hope.

Although they had been defeated, their sacrifice hadn’t been in vain. They had ignited a spark that would eventually become a raging fire.

And Lin Jing had been Fu Shiyuan’s second-in-command.

After his death, his wife and child had become targets for the barbarian court, not just to eliminate potential threats, but also to make an example of them, a warning to anyone who dared oppose them.

And these martial artists, although having no prior connection to Lin Jing, were risking their lives to protect his family.

Shi Hao smiled, “So you put aside your own plans, even your search for your sister, to help them, putting yourself in danger?”

He reached out and playfully flicked her forehead, “You’re such a softie.”

Xu Xiaoyan swatted his hand away, “What would you have done?”

Then, her smile fading, she said, her voice filled with concern, “I hope Old Zhong is alright.”

Shi Hao sighed, “I’m not optimistic. He wouldn’t have collaborated with the Six Gates; otherwise, they would have been waiting for you at the temple. But they were waiting at the foot of the mountain, which means your escape route is still secret. Something must have happened to him.

“Hopefully, he’s just been captured and is waiting to be interrogated with you. But it’s also possible… they killed him.”

Xu Xiaoyan said, “We barely managed to escape and cross the Long River. We had no other choice but to contact him to arrange passage south. Perhaps we shouldn’t have gone to him. He’s been retired for years.”

Shi Hao said, “If they only captured him, they wouldn’t kill him immediately, not until they’ve caught you. But your situation is more precarious. When I arrived, the town was crawling with barbarian soldiers and Six Gates agents, and also other martial artists, who, although not from the Six Gates, were also searching for you.”

Xu Xiaoyan said, “The Sea Shark Gang.”

Shi Hao said, “The Sea Shark Gang? The ones who control the salt and maritime trade along the lower Long River and the East Sea coast?”

Xu Xiaoyan said, “The salt trade is a lucrative business. They couldn’t do it without the barbarian court’s backing. Salt smuggling is a capital offense. The Sea Shark Gang is protected by the Han He family, one of the four great barbarian families. They’re powerful.”

Shi Hao thought about it. She was right. The salt trade was a government monopoly. The Sea Shark Gang couldn’t operate without official protection.

    Ordinary smugglers risked their lives.

Xu Xiaoyan continued, “They’re basically lapdogs of the Han He family. The barbarian army and the Six Gates are searching openly, and the Sea Shark Gang is working in secret. We couldn’t even enter the towns; we had to avoid them.

“But we can’t keep running. If we continue south, they’ll find us.”

Shi Hao asked, “Where are you taking them?”

Xu Xiaoyan said, “To one of the larger southern rebel groups. The closest are the Dragon and Phoenix Society and the Yellow Heaven Army…”

    “The Yellow Heaven Army?”

“They’re quite powerful in the south, controlling seven of the twenty-one prefectures of Jiangyin. The Dragon and Phoenix Society would be better, though. They were formed by former members of Dark Thunder. They would protect Lin Jing’s family.

“But reaching their territory is difficult. There are other smaller rebel groups, like Guan Rong’s and Qian Dehui’s, also connected to Dark Thunder, but they’re further away and weaker, constantly under attack.

“The closest and most powerful is the Yellow Heaven Army, led by Li Badao, who, I heard, was just a commoner before launching his rebellion. But he’s not from Dark Thunder, and he has no connections to the Daoist sects. We can’t contact him, and we don’t know if he would even help us.”

Shi Hao’s mind raced. Li Badao of the Yellow Heaven Army… he was an outer disciple of the Black Lotus Realm, controlled by Long Niu.

    He was essentially… Shi Hao’s subordinate’s subordinate’s… subordinate!

    Chapter 229: Night Pursuit

“Are you sure?” the old Daoist asked the newcomer, “Which direction did they come from?”

    The newcomer pointed.

“That’s not the way that kid went,” the old Daoist said.

“The Chief Constable is already on their tail with a group of men,” the newcomer replied, “and he’s sent others to flank them. Set up an ambush here. We’ll catch them all in one net.”

The old Daoist looked at the two injured men who were groaning in pain, “Quiet! Stop your whining! If we succeed, your injuries will be your reward! You’ll get a handsome compensation. But if they escape, none of us will get anything, and your broken hands will be for nothing.”

The two men immediately quieted down.

“We’ll go to the back,” the old Daoist said to the others, “Set up the ambush. And remember, wait for my signal. Don’t act rashly.”

He and the two injured men hid at the back of the temple while the other martial artists took their positions.

Shi Hao descended the mountain, a thought striking him, These barbarian lapdogs are waiting in ambush. They’re clearly not waiting for me. Then who? And whatever it is, it can’t be good.

He quickly crossed the mountain and, from a high vantage point, observed the temple below.

Dusk had fallen, the sky darkening, the moon hidden behind clouds.

The autumn wind was cold, and the forest below was shrouded in shadows.

He saw a group of figures moving stealthily through the trees, towards the foot of Three Peaks Mountain.

They’re being very cautious, afraid of being discovered, he thought, They must be working with those men in the temple, planning an ambush.

He decided to interfere. Using the Evil Shadow Disguise Technique to alter his appearance, he descended the mountain and followed them.

As they reached a clearing and hid in the bushes, he emerged from the shadows, a cold smile on his face.

“Who’s there?” one of them, alert, turned quickly, hearing the rustling leaves.

Shi Hao was faster. As the man channeled his energy, Shi Hao, using his opponent’s own momentum against him, accelerated.

He struck the man’s chest with a powerful blow, sending him flying backwards, crashing into a tree before collapsing, his chest caved in, blood spurting from his mouth.

Shi Hao could have killed him instantly with the Severing Meridian Burning Heart Finger, a single, precise strike to a vital point.

But he had deliberately chosen a more… dramatic approach, the force of his blow sending the man flying, a clear display of power, a warning to the others.

The other men, startled, attacked him, shouting, “Who are you?! This is official Six Gates business!”

Shi Hao snatched a saber from one of them and, with a single stroke, split his skull open, roaring, “Barbarian lapdogs, all of you deserve to die!”

He channeled his energy into his voice, the words echoing through the forest.

Enraged, the Six Gates men attacked him.

Shi Hao, unafraid, used the Soul Chasing Locking Steps to anticipate their movements, dodging and weaving through their attacks, his own strikes, fueled by the Mysterious Charm Technique, now wreathed in demonic fire, setting the surrounding trees ablaze.

“What’s happening?” a voice whispered anxiously at the foot of Three Peaks Mountain.

A group of eight stood there: a tall, thin man in martial attire, two Daoist priests, a middle-aged woman, a young man, and a girl dressed as a village girl.

The girl’s face was plain, a small bump on her forehead, her mouth slightly crooked, her blue cotton dress simple and patched, its light red floral patterns faded.

    She was the “ugly girl.”

They were protecting a woman holding an infant.

The sudden sounds of fighting and the smell of smoke from the nearby forest startled them.

And then, a voice, loud and clear, echoing through the night, “Barbarian lapdogs, all of you deserve to die!”

And from behind them, the sounds of pursuit, figures approaching rapidly.

“We’re surrounded!” the woman with the infant exclaimed.

A signal flare, trailing smoke and sparks, shot into the sky, and figures emerged from the forest, surrounding them.

“Where do you think you’re going?” the middle-aged woman said, her voice cold.

The tall, thin man gritted his teeth, “This way!” He led them towards the source of the commotion, towards the voice that had shouted.

Their pursuers, Six Gates agents, also realizing the danger, chased after them like wolves.

They followed the trail of smoke and fire, which, however, didn’t spread far in the damp, autumn air.

Only a few trees burned, their smoke thick and black.

They emerged from the smoke and saw several bodies scattered on the ground, and a young man, wielding a bloodstained saber, standing among them.

He had a prominent hooked nose and sharp, angular features, his expression menacing.

As they stared at him, a mixture of fear and confusion in their eyes, his gaze fixed on the plain-looking girl with the crooked mouth.

    He smiled.

His smile, however, didn’t soften his features but made him appear even more sinister.

The “ugly girl” also smiled, her crooked mouth somehow straightening, her face suddenly more… charming.

“Go,” the hooked-nosed young man said in a low voice, “I’ll hold them off.”

Their pursuers were closing in. They didn’t have time to argue. The tall, thin man whispered, “Thank you.”

They hurried past him, the woman with the infant shielded by the others.

The hooked-nosed young man watched them go, his gaze lingering on the girl in the blue dress.

She glanced back at him, her eyes telling him to be careful.

“Little Emerald,” he whispered, “follow them.”

The small figure on his shoulder flickered and disappeared.

After they were gone, he swung the saber, tossing it into the air, and unleashed a wave of fire and wind, igniting the surrounding trees.

The Three Origins Flowing Pearl Technique, combined with the Mysterious Charm Technique and the first three strikes of the Azure Sky Immortal Thunder Sword, had become a powerful fire-starting technique.

Several figures emerged, their movements swift. A tall man in a dark robe, his gaze sharp as an eagle’s, stepped forward and shouted, “Who are you?! This is Six Gates business! How dare you interfere?!”

Shi Hao sneered, “You’re all scum!”

The man, enraged, leaped over the flames and punched, his attack splitting into three mid-air, each strike carrying a powerful force.

Shi Hao, his body swaying slightly, his fingers like swords, intercepted the three attacks with swift, precise movements.

Although the man’s projected energy was powerful, it was still under his control. Shi Hao’s finger strikes, however, targeting the man’s wrists, forced him to change his technique mid-strike, transforming his fist into a palm.

Shi Hao’s palm struck the man’s hastily formed defense, sending him stumbling backwards into the flames.

Fortunately, he was a mid-rank martial artist and quickly extinguished the flames with his internal energy, although his face was flushed, and his breathing ragged. He glared at Shi Hao, but he didn’t dare attack again.

Other martial artists, circling around the flames, approached Shi Hao.

Shi Hao’s figure flickered, and a man with a goose-feather saber attacked him.

He had been part of a larger group, but Shi Hao’s sudden movement had placed him between them, isolating him, the others momentarily too far away to assist.

The man roared, channeling his strength into his saber.

Shi Hao’s left palm deflected the attack, its seemingly random movement pulling the saber off course.

Then, his right fist struck the man’s chest, sending him flying backwards, his body crashing into another man.

“He’s strong! Be careful!” someone shouted.

The others, now wary, approached cautiously, their formation tight.

Shi Hao, his goal to delay them, to avoid being surrounded, continued his evasive maneuvers, his footwork unpredictable, exploiting any openings, killing two more with swift, precise strikes.

The tall, sixth-rank martial artist, having crossed the flames, attacked him.

Although Shi Hao wasn’t afraid of him in a one-on-one fight, he didn’t want to be entangled with him and his men.

He quickly dodged and escaped, leaving the man swinging at empty air.

“Chief Constable,” someone said, “which way did they go?”

The tall martial artist spat angrily, “That kid is skilled. We’ll need the Constable King himself to capture him. Focus on the Lin family.”

They pursued the fleeing group, but thanks to Shi Hao’s delaying tactics, they were long gone, disappearing into the darkness of the forest. The Six Gates agents, frustrated, gritted their teeth.

“They got away,” the tall martial artist said angrily, “We’ll have to contact the Sea Shark Gang.”

Someone said, “But if the Sea Shark Gang captures them, we won’t get any credit, will we?”

The tall martial artist cursed, “I don’t like it either, but it’s better than letting them escape and being punished for our failure.”

They searched the area briefly, then, realizing it was futile, left to make other arrangements.

“Who was that kid?” someone whispered, “I’ve never seen him before.”

The tall martial artist said, “We know everyone in the Qiantang River region who would dare oppose us. He must be from somewhere else.”

“Now that you mention it, I think I’ve heard of him. He’s on the Blacklist, although not very high up. Something about a ‘Mad Blade Hero,’ who killed Chi Mu Heng and Xue Lang. That’s him.”

  • I, The Man Who’ll Conquer Both the Immortal Venerable and the Demon Empress 228

Chapter 228: Three Eyes See All Under Heaven

The pleasure boat, following a tributary of Poyang Lake, left the vast expanse of water and entered a narrower channel.

They reached Mount Lu, a towering peak blocking their path.

Suddenly, the mountain seemed to part, a hidden passage opening before them, and the boat continued, entering a small, secluded lake.

Shi Hao and Xiang Gu disembarked with Yue Yaotai and followed her through a dense forest.

The trees parted, revealing a hidden valley, like a scene from a mythical paradise.

An elegant pavilion stood before them, surrounded by other buildings, their arrangement harmonious and aesthetically pleasing.

Shi Hao was led to the top floor of the main pavilion, where he observed the layout of the Moon Lotus Pavilion and browsed through their library of secret manuals.

Looking down from his vantage point, he saw the pavilion was filled with beautiful women, their movements graceful and orderly.

As expected of a sect that cultivates the Lunar Divinity path, he thought, Someone like Long Niu wouldn’t even be considered.

This was the Moon Lotus Pavilion’s main headquarters, with smaller branches elsewhere.

The disciples here, carefully selected and trained, were the sect’s elite.

Beneath the main pavilion was a hidden network of tunnels and chambers. Yue Yaotai, having some free time, gave him a tour.

The layout was complex and disorienting, a labyrinth from which it would be difficult to escape without a guide.

Shi Hao spent a day at the Moon Lotus Pavilion, familiarizing himself with its layout and its members.

Then, he, Yue Yaotai, Zhu Ping, Huan Tingting, and Xiang Gu boarded a boat and left, first crossing Poyang Lake, then transferring to a larger merchant vessel, heading down the Long River.

The Long River flowed northeast, its current strong and steady.

Yue Yaotai, Zhu Ping, and Huan Tingting had all changed their appearances and their attire, using disguises.

They weren’t using the Evil Shadow Disguise Technique. Although it allowed for quick transformations, it was also limiting, the constant manipulation of facial muscles uncomfortable and unnatural, making subtle expressions difficult. And having a group of people all wearing the same stiff, emotionless mask would be suspicious.

So they used more conventional methods: makeup, prosthetics, and hair dyes.

Shi Hao discovered that Huan Tingting was a skilled makeup artist.

With her artistry, Yue Yaotai, dressed in a pleated skirt, now resembled a kind and gentle matron from a wealthy family, her usual cold demeanor gone.

Shi Hao began to suspect that her aloofness was just an act, a deliberate contrast to her disguised persona.

As for Zhu Ping and Huan Tingting, they were disguised as maidservants, one in red, the other in black.

Although dressed as servants, their movements and their bearing still suggested they were martial artists… In these times, revealing their connection to the jianghu could be beneficial, preventing unnecessary trouble.

As they approached Yangzhou, they saw a large group of people being escorted by barbarian soldiers along the north bank.

Shi Hao, standing on the deck, asked, “Are those conscripted laborers for the Grand Canal project?”

Yue Yaotai nodded slightly, “Yes. These past few months, they’ve become desperate, conscripting people everywhere, ignoring the unrest it’s causing. Jiangnan is in chaos, and although the rebellions in the north have been suppressed for now, they’re still spreading. The barbarian court’s desperation suggests they have some… ulterior motive.”

From a demonic cultivator’s perspective, such drastic measures meant a significant potential profit.

The idea of “suffering now for future generations” was a convenient excuse. Who knew what the future held, when the present was filled with such hardship?

And the barbarian court wasn’t known for its altruism.

They reached Yangzhou, changed ships, and continued downriver, entering the Qiantang River.

After disembarking, they arrived at Haiyan County, where a large number of barbarian soldiers were stationed, checking the travel permits of everyone entering and leaving the city.

They were also stopped and questioned, despite Yue Yaotai’s forged documents… her disguise was that of a wealthy merchant’s wife, her business operating along the lower reaches of the Long River.

Even so, they were still subjected to a thorough interrogation.

“They’re looking for someone,” Yue Yaotai whispered.

Before entering an inn, Shi Hao looked back and saw, besides the soldiers, numerous martial artists moving through the streets.

Some, after being questioned, lifted their robes, showed something to the soldiers, and were then allowed to pass.

“Six Gates,” Shi Hao said, his voice low.

They entered the inn, and Shi Hao, leaving Yue Yaotai, Zhu Ping, Huan Tingting, and Xiang Gu there, asked the innkeeper for directions to Three Peaks Mountain.

He left Haiyan County and headed towards the mountain.

Three Peaks Mountain, true to its name, had three distinct peaks that, seen from afar, resembled a trident.

Following the path described by Hou Bomin, he climbed the mountain and found a small Daoist temple halfway up the slope.

The temple was small and dilapidated, its walls a weathered ochre, its age unclear.

The path was steep and winding, the temple hidden deep within the mountains, invisible from below, explaining the lack of visitors and the absence of incense burners.

It clearly wasn’t a thriving temple.

The gates, open, were carved with intricate patterns. Inside, the stone courtyard was covered in dust and fallen leaves. A bronze incense burner, with only a few sticks of incense remaining, stood before the main hall.

Inside, a statue of a deity with three eyes, its expression fierce and menacing, its left hand holding a wind-fire wheel, its right a steel mace, stood behind the altar. It was Wang Lingguan, the “Thunder God of the Three-Five Fire Train.”

Wang Lingguan was a Daoist protector deity, his third eye said to see all under heaven, his whip capable of awakening the world.

Shi Hao called out, “Is Daoist Zhong here?”

A voice came from the back hall, “Who’s asking?” An old Daoist priest emerged.

He wore a Daoist robe, a horsetail whisk in his hand, a crimson inner robe, and wide sleeves embroidered with golden dragons, reaching almost to the ground.

Shi Hao bowed, “Are you Daoist Zhong?”

The old Daoist said, “That’s right. What do you want?”

Shi Hao said, “Are you preparing for a ceremony, Master? If so, I can come back tomorrow.” He turned to leave.

The old Daoist said, “It’s no trouble. I’m not busy. Just tending to my garden. I wasn’t planning on leaving anyway. What is it?”

Shi Hao smiled, “Since you’re cultivating your inner peace, I won’t disturb you,” and continued towards the exit.

A gust of wind from behind, and he turned swiftly, his palm striking outwards.

A loud crash as their palms met, both of them staggering back. The old Daoist sneered, “How did you know I wasn’t Daoist Zhong?”

Shi Hao said calmly, “You’re wearing ceremonial robes, but you’re not attending a ceremony. If Daoist Zhong earned his living performing rituals, this temple wouldn’t be so deserted. And if he didn’t, why would he be dressed like that?

“You’re wearing ceremonial robes, yet you’re gardening. You’re clearly not a Daoist priest. You don’t even know the proper attire.

“Even if you have… eccentric tastes, and enjoy wearing these robes, why are you gardening in the back while the courtyard is covered in leaves? And your robe is so clean, despite all the dust here. It’s clearly a new robe, borrowed for the occasion.

“Even then, I wasn’t entirely certain. There are many eccentric people in this world. Perhaps you simply enjoy wearing ceremonial robes while neglecting your surroundings. So I tested you, and you failed.”

The old Daoist snorted, “You’re clever, but you’re not leaving this place.”

A rush of wind, and numerous figures emerged from the shadows, surrounding the temple.

Shi Hao sneered, “So it’s the barbarian court’s lapdogs.”

The old Daoist glared at him, “Who are you? And what do you want with that old fool Zhong?”

Shi Hao smiled, “What’s it to you?” He channeled his energy into his palm.

With a thud, the old Daoist was thrown back, crashing into the altar, coughing up blood… They had seemed evenly matched earlier, but Shi Hao had been holding back.

The old Daoist hadn’t expected that.

Martial artists surged forward from both sides of the hall.

Shi Hao, not wanting to be surrounded, leaped upwards, crashing through the roof.

As tiles and debris rained down, he jumped from rooftop to rooftop. Two more martial artists, wielding sabers, attacked him.

Shi Hao flickered, his palm striking one, sending him flying. The other, startled, jumped down from the roof.

Shi Hao landed in the courtyard, the martial artists from inside the hall now pursuing him.

Ignoring them, he ran towards the main gate. Two more figures, each wielding a goose-feather saber, emerged from either side, their blades aimed at his waist.

Shi Hao, however, anticipating their attack, grabbed their sabers.

The two martial artists, both eighth-rank, were no match for him.

They tried to pull their weapons back, but the blades were stuck fast.

With a clang, both sabers shattered.

Shi Hao grabbed their wrists, and with a sickening crack, broke their bones.

As the other martial artists approached, he leaped over the wall and fled down the mountain, quickly disappearing into the distance.

The two injured men, clutching their broken wrists, howled in pain.

“Who was that?” someone asked, “When did such a powerful martial artist appear in the Qiantang River region?”

The others exchanged glances. The old Daoist, supported by two men, emerged from the temple, his face contorted in pain, “Inform the Chief Constable! This kid must be connected to the Lin family…”

A messenger arrived, running from another path, “They’re coming! The Lin family has been spotted heading this way… What happened here?”

  • I, The Man Who’ll Conquer Both the Immortal Venerable and the Demon Empress 227

Chapter 227: Yue Yaotai and Xiang Gu

Shi Hao exited the cabin, and Plum Blossom Lady fetched a sleepy-eyed Xiang Gu.

Sha Lingshan waved her fan, “I’ll be returning to Mirror Flower Lake. If you have time, Young Master, please visit us there.”

Shi Hao smiled, “I will, if I have the chance.”

He and Xiang Gu then boarded the pleasure boat.

“Welcome, Young Master!” Yue Yaotai, along with Zhu Ping, the “Crimson Lotus Fiery Blaze”; Huan Tingting, the “Black Heart Enchantress”; and a group of Moon Lotus Pavilion disciples, all knelt on the deck in greeting.

The Moon Lotus Pavilion cultivated the Lunar Divinity path, and their disciples were carefully selected. Although their heads were bowed, Shi Hao could see they were all dressed in pink, their figures slender, their hair styled in identical buns, their movements precise and synchronized.

“You may rise,” Shi Hao said.

Yue Yaotai stood up, “Please come in, Young Master.”

Behind her, Zhu Ping, Huan Tingting, and the other disciples remained kneeling, their heads bowed.

Except for Yue Yaotai, none of them had seen Shi Hao’s true face before.

Zhu Ping and Huan Tingting had only seen him disguised with the Evil Shadow Disguise Technique, a secret art of the Evil Lotus Sect, now held by the Moon Lotus Pavilion after the sect’s division.

They knew he was disguised but didn’t know his true appearance.

And with Yue Yaotai’s strict discipline, they wouldn’t dare look up without permission.

Yue Yaotai looked at Xiang Gu behind him, “And this is…?”

Shi Hao said, “This is Xiang Gu. She’ll be traveling with us to the East Sea…”

Before he could finish, Xiang Gu suddenly pointed at Yue Yaotai, “Ah… you… you’re…”

Shi Hao looked at Yue Yaotai, who also seemed surprised.

Xiang Gu, however, after repeating “You’re… you’re…” several times, as if struggling to remember, scratched her head in confusion.

Shi Hao thought, They know each other?

Yue Yaotai, her hair styled in a morning cloud bun, her expression serious, her beauty enhanced by the moonlight, her colorful robe, open at the neck in the style of the early Sheng Dynasty, revealing her ample bosom, her pleated skirt cinched at her waist, her figure elegant, her aura more reserved than Sha Lingshan’s, a subtle aloofness that made her seem… untouchable.

She looked at Xiang Gu, her eyes wide with surprise, clearly recognizing her.

Xiang Gu, however, was still struggling to remember, her brow furrowed.

Yue Yaotai said softly, “Young Master, let’s talk inside,” and turned, leading the way.

The pleasure boat’s interior was far more luxurious than an ordinary ship, its curved hull, like a crescent moon, floating gracefully on the water, its two decks spacious and elegant, like the chambers of a fine pavilion.

Yue Yaotai led them to the upper deck and offered them seats by the window. Two young girls, their heads bowed, served them tea and refreshments, not daring to look up.

The Moon Lotus Pavilion clearly had strict rules, the large boat strangely quiet.

Little Emerald materialized, and Xiang Gu, forgetting about Yue Yaotai, reached for her.

Shi Hao, to prevent another incident, picked up the doll.

He looked at Yue Yaotai, “Have you met Xiang Gu before, Branch Leader?” He was curious about Xiang Gu’s background.

Yue Yaotai lowered her voice, “It was a long time ago. We spent some time together when we were children.”

Xiang Gu, as if finally remembering, rushed over and hugged Yue Yaotai, “Sister Yue! It’s you!”

Yue Yaotai struggled to free herself… Shi Hao suspected she found Xiang Gu too dirty.

“When you were children?” he asked.

Yue Yaotai pushed Xiang Gu away, wiping her robe with a handkerchief, and said, “When I was about ten, the previous Pavilion Lord brought her to the Moon Lotus Pavilion.”

“You mean Xiao Yan’s mother?” Shi Hao asked.

Yue Yaotai nodded slightly, “It was a long time ago, before the previous Pavilion Lord left. She brought her to the pavilion one day, and she stayed for about six months. She was very young then, and very mischievous. I was also quite young, and I was tasked with looking after her, so I remember her quite well.”

She glanced at Xiang Gu, a hint of distaste in her eyes.

Xiang Gu tried to hug her again, “Sister Yue!”

    Yue Yaotai dodged her.

Shi Hao thought, It seems Xiang Gu remembers those days fondly, but for Yue Yaotai, it was probably a nightmare.

He looked at Xiang Gu and asked softly, “Do you know Xiao Yan’s mother, Miss Xiang Gu?”

    “Xiao Yan’s mother?”

“The woman who brought you to the Moon Lotus Pavilion.”

Xiang Gu said, “Moon Lotus Pavilion? What’s that?”

Yue Yaotai said, her voice slightly sharp, “The place where you caused so much trouble.”

Xiang Gu looked up, her brow furrowed, “Me? Causing trouble? Did I?”

Shi Hao saw Yue Yaotai clenching her fists.

After a moment, she took a deep breath, calming herself.

Her expression, however, remained cold and distant, “The woman who brought you to me.”

Xiang Gu said, “Oh, her…” She paused, then said, “I don’t know her.”

    “You don’t know her?”

Xiang Gu tilted her head, “No. I was hiding in the mountains when she found me. She said my brother was injured and couldn’t come, so she would take me instead. I refused, but she took me anyway. I didn’t even know her name.”

Shi Hao and Yue Yaotai exchanged glances.

Shi Hao couldn’t help but ask, “Was your brother also from the Penglai Mirage Pavilion, Miss Xiang Gu?”

Xiang Gu sighed, “He was the one who helped me escape.”

Yue Yaotai’s expression changed, “The Penglai Mirage Pavilion?”

Xiang Gu sighed again, “Whatever you do, don’t go to that place. It’s too dangerous.”

This was the second time she had warned them.

Shi Hao asked, “Where is your brother now, Miss Xiang Gu?”

Xiang Gu shook her head, “I don’t know. I wish I did. I haven’t seen him since then.”

Shi Hao turned to Yue Yaotai, “Please treat Miss Xiang Gu as my… guest, Branch Leader.”

Yue Yaotai sighed, called a maidservant, and had her escort Xiang Gu to a guest room.

After Xiang Gu left, Shi Hao asked, “Has Xiao Yan been here, to the Moon Lotus Pavilion?”

Yue Yaotai shook her head gently, “She lived here as a child, but she never returned after leaving. Why do you ask, Young Master? Isn’t she with you?”

Shi Hao sighed, “She left.” He explained how someone had seen a girl who looked exactly like her in the East Sea.

Yue Yaotai frowned, “The East Sea is vast. Even if such a girl exists, finding her would be incredibly difficult. And if it’s truly connected to the Penglai Mirage Pavilion, it’s even more dangerous. It’s better if she doesn’t find her.”

Shi Hao nodded, then asked, “I’ve heard you’ve been to the Crystal Palace, Branch Leader.”

Yue Yaotai said, “There are actually three Crystal Palaces on the seabed of the East Sea. I’ve been to one of them.”

Shi Hao, surprised, asked, “Three? Why so many?”

Yue Yaotai said, “Those are just the ones we know about. There might be others. No one knows their true origins. They seem to have existed since ancient times.

“The water within the Crystal Palaces is… unique, containing many unusual creatures. I did visit one a few years ago. It was quite a journey.”

Shi Hao said, “I’m going to the East Sea Crystal Palace to obtain Dream Grass, an ingredient I need. It can’t be preserved outside the Crystal Palace, so I have to use it quickly.

“That’s why it’s not available anywhere, not even within the Chongxian Sect. And I’m also worried about Xiao Yan. I want to find her.”

Yue Yaotai bowed, “In that case, please come to the Moon Lotus Pavilion, Young Master. I will accompany you to the East Sea.”

Shi Hao said, “Have Zhu Ping and Huan Tingting come in as well. Since they’re your trusted companions, I trust them as well.”

Yue Yaotai gracefully stood up and called for them.

“Young Master,” Zhu Ping and Huan Tingting entered and bowed respectfully, their heads lowered.

Having spent time with Sha Lingshan, Plum Blossom Lady, and Peach Blossom Lady, their more relaxed and informal demeanor, Shi Hao felt slightly uncomfortable with the Moon Lotus Pavilion’s stricter atmosphere.

Of course, he didn’t think there was anything wrong with their discipline and formality. As a demonic sect, operating in the shadows, they needed strict rules to maintain order and secrecy.

The Mirror Flower Water Moon Pavilion, however, rarely involved themselves in the jianghu’s affairs, their approach more akin to a reclusive sect, their style very different from the other two factions.

“You may raise your heads,” Shi Hao said.

Zhu Ping and Huan Tingting looked up at him.

This was the first time they had seen his true face, without the disguise. He looked younger, less menacing, more like a scholar.

Shi Hao smiled gently, “Sit down. We’re all members of the same sect now. There’s no need for such formalities. Let’s just chat.”

Although a leader’s approachability was a virtue, his followers wouldn’t dare take advantage of it. Zhu Ping and Huan Tingting, although seated, remained respectful and reserved.

Chapter 226: Eastward Flows the Great River

Shi Hao returned to the manor with Xiang Gu, then entered Dàxīng City.

He met with Du Yuejiao, who said, “Brother Shi, I’m afraid I can’t go to the East Sea with you.”

Shi Hao asked, surprised, “What happened?”

Du Yuejiao explained, “The sect is abandoning Dàxīng City. They’re closing the main temple here and transferring all the immortal ingredients from Spirit Jade Cliff. Master has been tasked with escorting the ingredients. I’m worried about her, so I want to go with her.”

Shi Hao said thoughtfully, “You don’t have to stay with the Chongxian Sect.”

Du Yuejiao said, “I know, but Master has been with the sect since she was a child. She doesn’t know where else to go.”

Shi Hao considered this. Although he wanted both of them to come with him, Yuejiao didn’t know about his relationship with her master, and he wasn’t sure how she would react.

And he himself was a wanderer now. They might not be safe with him. The Chongxian Sect, despite its flaws, was still the most powerful Daoist sect. They would be safer there.

Besides, he could sense that Yuejiao, being with her master, was more at peace.

Her soul was still tainted by the Yin Demon, and although the corruption wasn’t severe yet, the dangers of the jianghu could trigger it.

Zhuo Mulan lived a simple, quiet life, dedicated to cultivation. Staying with her would be good for Yuejiao.

He nodded, “I’ll come find you after I return from the East Sea.”

“Okay,” Du Yuejiao hugged him, her face pressed against his chest. After a moment, she added, her voice filled with concern, “Brother Shi, be careful out there…”

“Don’t worry, I will,” Shi Hao said.

She whispered, her voice small, “I mean… don’t… don’t go chasing after other girls.”

Shi Hao said, “Huh? Of course not.”

Du Yuejiao, torn between her concern for her master and her worry about him leaving, her insecurity fueled by the presence of other women around him – Plum Blossom Lady and Peach Blossom Lady were clearly interested in him, and there was also Xu Xiaoyan – hesitated.

She asked, “How are you getting to the East Sea?”

Shi Hao said, “I’ll travel down the Hanyang River to the Long River, then by boat to the East Sea. It’s the fastest route.”

Du Yuejiao was slightly relieved. Xu Xiaoyan had said she was returning to Jiangzhe. He shouldn’t encounter her along the Long River.

But deep down, she couldn’t shake the feeling that he cared more about Xu Xiaoyan than her.

Shi Hao held her close and smiled, “Don’t worry, I’ll find the Dream Grass and return quickly.” He sensed her growing insecurity since leaving Changbai Mountain.

To distract her, he teased her, using his usual… methods, ropes, whips, and candles, until she was crying and pleading, “You’re always bullying me,” her voice, however, a mixture of complaint and pleasure.

Shi Hao, with the Azure Sky Vermilion Fruit and the Illusory Sea Lingzhi, traveled southeast along the Hanyang River, reaching the Long River.

He traveled on a ship provided by the Mirror Flower Water Moon Pavilion, disguised as a vessel belonging to a prominent family, its documents forged.

Although they encountered barbarian patrols along the way, the ship’s seemingly noble origins allowed them to pass without incident.

Xiang Gu was also with him, although she hadn’t seemed very enthusiastic about the trip, she hadn’t refused either.

If she had truly refused, he couldn’t have forced her to come.

Sha Lingshan, Plum Blossom Lady, and Peach Blossom Lady were also on board, ostensibly escorting him to the Moon Lotus Pavilion, but Shi Hao suspected they were simply bored.

The Mirror Flower Water Moon Pavilion seemed to have more free time than the other two Evil Lotus factions.

Plum Blossom Lady and Peach Blossom Lady were very attentive to him, their service almost… excessive. He suspected that if he asked them to join him in bed, they wouldn’t refuse.

But he didn’t. He had to maintain a balance between the three factions.

They were still in the process of merging, and since he couldn’t devote much time to managing their affairs, the three branches still operated relatively independently, loosely coordinated by Elder Shuiyue.

Showing favoritism towards one branch would only create resentment among the others.

And although Sha Lingshan didn’t seem to mind her companions’ blatant attempts to seduce him, Shi Hao, having spent some time with her, knew her personality and didn’t take it personally.

During their occasional stops along the riverbank, he heard people discussing the recent strange events in Wu Gorge.

But no one knew they had narrowly averted a catastrophe.

If the Three Gorges had been destroyed, the Long River’s course altered, in these turbulent times, it would have triggered widespread devastation.

And although the Hanyang River didn’t flow through Wu Gorge, as a tributary of the Long River, it would have been affected as well.

The barbarian court had sent investigators, but they hadn’t found anything.

Shi Hao continued his cultivation during the journey, his Daoist and demonic energies both reaching their peak. To advance further, he would need to break through.

He spent his days on deck with Sha Lingshan, enjoying the scenery and discussing martial arts.

As for Xiang Gu, she was usually occupied with her… pets, her collection of strange and creepy crawlies in bottles and jars, occasionally releasing them, making Plum Blossom Lady and Peach Blossom Lady shudder.

And at night, when he had nothing else to do, Shi Hao would tease and torment Little Emerald… revenge for her biting him in the Primordial Grotto Heaven.

Without your master here, who’s going to protect you now? he thought, as she squirmed and protested.

The Han River flowed southeast, joining the Long River, which continued southeast for a considerable distance, then turned northeast after reaching Poyang Lake.

As they traveled, they saw more and more refugees, those from the south fleeing north, those from the north fleeing south.

They gathered along the riverbanks, their numbers growing.

At one point, they saw a horrific scene: corpses littered the riverbank and floated in the water, all refugees, their killers unknown.

Shi Hao could do nothing. Such tragedies were becoming increasingly common.

Long Niu joined them along the way, reporting the latest news.

As expected, the Supreme Emperor’s departure from the capital had caused widespread unrest, the undercurrent of rebellion growing stronger.

“Martial artists are gathering in secret,” Sha Lingshan said, waving her fan, “Only the Taisu Immortal Pavilion could have such influence. Yun Caiyao must be aware of Lie Zunyi’s true intentions and is preparing a response. The Six Gates are also active, while the Chongxian Sect seems to be withdrawing, perhaps waiting to see what happens.”

Shi Hao said, “The question is, how strong is Lie Zunyi now? Three hundred years ago, he was an unparalleled expert, only the Holy Jade Immortal and the Demon Empress surpassing him. And the Holy Jade Immortal was a rare genius, even for the Taisu Immortal Pavilion.

“I doubt they’ve produced another expert of her caliber. If they had, she would have appeared long ago.”

Sha Lingshan nodded, “This Yun Caiyao likely emerged because of the True Dragon energy at Dragon Head Mountain. She was forced to act. But for her to appear publicly, she must be a high-rank expert. Alas, in the past three hundred years, our Evil Lotus Sect hasn’t even produced a single high-rank expert, let alone someone comparable to our legendary Sect Leader.”

She lowered her voice, “When will our Sect Leader return, Young Master? With her power, she would be invincible.”

Shi Hao said, “Not soon. It will be a few more months.” According to Ye Zi Yin and Su Mei, he had to reach the fourth rank and complete a task for them before they could leave the Primordial Grotto Heaven.

And even if Su Mei returned, she wouldn’t be invincible. After all, her rival, the Holy Jade Immortal, would also return, and another martial world catastrophe would likely follow.

Shi Hao dreaded that. He didn’t want them to fight to the death. The idea of only one of them surviving was unbearable.

But if they both returned… the world would be plunged into chaos.

Sha Lingshan, unaware of his worries, was relieved to hear of the Demon Empress’s impending return. After three hundred years, a few more months was nothing.

    They finally reached Poyang Lake.

It was evening, the moon hanging high in the sky, its light reflected in the shimmering water.

Although no longer full, it was still bright. The ship slowed down, and a large, ornate pleasure boat, about sixty feet long, similar in size to their own vessel, but adorned with lanterns and colorful silk banners, like something used by a wealthy young lady for a leisurely cruise, approached.

The pleasure boat stopped before them, and a soft voice called out, “Is the Young Master there?” Sha Lingshan smiled, “That’s Branch Leader Yue. I’ll leave you here, Young Master.”
