    Chapter 4 Appetizer (4)

All eyes turned towards the object Zhu Ming held—a small, crudely carved figurine, about five centimeters tall.

Mr. Li’s face flickered with guilt, but his body continued to thrash uncontrollably. Yun Zouchuan tightened her grip, noticing that he could only flail his limbs without any real chance of escape. She decided to ease up slightly; she didn’t want to be liable for any broken ribs.

Li Xiuya stared at the remnants of her pillow in astonishment. “How did that get inside my pillow? I had no idea it was there!”

“Perhaps you should ask Mr. Li,” Zhu Ming said. “It seems your husband wasn’t aware he was also affected. But now that he knows the gravity of the situation, I believe he’ll be more forthcoming, unless he intends to become the permanent host for this thing.”

Judging by the sweat pouring down Mr. Li’s face, the sensation of losing control of one’s body was terrifying.

Avoiding his wife’s gaze, Mr. Li stammered, “I was on a business trip and heard about a local shaman who was very effective. I went to her for a good luck charm. Honey, I didn’t know it was anything strange.”

“If it was for good luck, why didn’t you tell Ms. Li?” Zhu Ming held the crowbar in front of Mr. Li, tantalizingly close to the figurine he desperately tried to reach but couldn’t grasp.

Examining the figurine, she analyzed, “Ceramic, human head, snake body, female characteristics. In ancient Chinese folklore, snake deities are often associated with fertility and sexuality. The most famous one is Nüwa, the creator of humankind. Ms. Li mentioned having vivid, intimate dreams and experiencing strange physical contact with Mr. Li. I believe the connection is clear.”

With every word Zhu Ming spoke, the expressions of Li Xiuya and Mr. Li darkened.

Mr. Li insisted, “I really didn’t know about any of that. Honey, believe me, I wouldn’t use anything like that.”

Zhu Ming continued, “Don’t worry, I haven’t finished my analysis. Considering what’s been happening between you two, traditional beliefs, and the fact that Mr. Li kept this a secret, could it be because—”

    Mr. Li inhaled sharply.

Zhu Ming finished, “—Mr. Li is impotent and resorted to unconventional methods for treatment?”

Mr. Li choked, his face burning with shame. “That’s enough! That’s slander! I’m not impotent! The figurine was for something else…” His voice trailed off, and he hung his head. “Fine, I’ll tell the truth. Honey, I heard that if you put this under your pillow, it would bring children and good fortune… I know you don’t want children, and the shaman told me this would change your mind.”

Li Xiuya’s face was a mask of disbelief. “We’ve been married for ten years, and we agreed not to have children. No wonder… no wonder you argued with me about this before your trip and then dropped it when you came back.”

Mr. Li protested, “Isn’t it normal for me to want a child at my age? But I didn’t mean to harm you! I didn’t know this thing was so evil!”

Zhu Ming clicked her tongue. Men and their pride. He’d rather confess than have his virility questioned. It was almost comical.

She interrupted them. “Ms. Li, Mr. Li, the issue now isn’t whether or not you want children, but this figurine. If there’s nothing else, I’ll take it and dispose of it.”

Despite her anger, Li Xiuya couldn’t bear to see her husband remain under the influence of the evil object, especially since it posed a danger to her as well. “What about him?”

Zhu Ming reassured her, “Don’t worry, he’ll return to normal once the figurine is dealt with. After that, he just needs to bathe daily in the yang energy of the sun, absorb the eastern purple qi, the southern diamond yang, and the golden crow’s tail light, receive the blessings of Xihe with a golden wheel around his body, and over time, the evil energy will naturally dissipate, restoring his health and well-being.”

Li Xiuya blinked. “What does that mean?”

    Yun Zouchuan translated, “Sunbathe.”

    Li Xiuya: “…”

It was 3 a.m., and the storm still raged. Getting a taxi at this hour would be difficult. “It’s not a good time to deal with the figurine,” Zhu Ming said. “A-Zou and I will stay here with you tonight and leave in the morning.”

Li Xiuya was immensely grateful. “That would be wonderful. We have a spare bedroom with a bed. You can rest there tonight.”

The room was intended for guests, usually their parents, and now it would serve its purpose.

Li Xiuya went to prepare the guest room while Zhu Ming and Yun Zouchuan used bedsheets to tie Mr. Li to a chair. He was still twitching uncontrollably.

At the guest room door, Zhu Ming saw Li Xiuya changing the sheets, her back bent, occasionally wiping her face.

    Knock, knock.

Zhu Ming tapped on the doorframe. “Ms. Li, the master bedroom is safe now. If you have anything you want to discuss privately, you can go there.”

Li Xiuya startled, quickly composing herself, not wanting to show her vulnerability. She turned with a smile. “Thank you so much for tonight. I didn’t expect your studio to be so effective, despite its low profile. You pinpointed the problem immediately. Ms. Zhu, do you have… the legendary Yin-Yang eyes?”

Ouch. But Zhu Ming wasn’t about to downplay their abilities. She smiled. “Indeed. True skill isn’t determined by fame. Our Small Fire God Supernatural Studio may be discreet, but our services are extensive. Feel free to contact us again if needed. Returning customers get a 5% discount.”

Li Xiuya sincerely hoped she wouldn’t need their services again, discount or not.

She accepted Zhu Ming’s business card. The back read, “Ghost catching, demon slaying, feng shui consultation: Your home’s best friend.” The front advertised, “Infidelity investigations, tracking, evidence gathering: Worry-free litigation support.”

Their services were truly extensive. “It’s late,” Li Xiuya said. “Let’s get some rest.”

She returned to the master bedroom, and Zhu Ming and Yun Zouchuan settled into the guest room.

Another person’s bed was never as comfortable as one’s own. Zhu Ming lay with her eyes closed, listening to the muffled sounds of arguing from next door.

Yun Zouchuan couldn’t sleep either. After tossing and turning, she finally asked, “Boss, how did you know the evil thing was in the pillow? I can see ghosts too, but that wasn’t a ghost. When we came in, I sensed the evil energy, but it was everywhere, evenly distributed.”

Logically, it shouldn’t have been possible to pinpoint the source based on the concentration of evil energy.

People like them had an official designation: Awakened. It meant they possessed abilities beyond common understanding. Awakened abilities varied greatly. Throughout history, some had developed cultivation techniques and passed them down, like those who disguised themselves as Taoist priests or Buddhist monks. Often, family members shared similar abilities.

But many Awakened had unique, unclassifiable abilities that couldn’t be systematically cultivated or categorized. This didn’t mean they were weak. Strength depended on both talent and effort.

Yun Zouchuan and Zhu Ming had different abilities, but being Awakened meant they possessed sufficient spiritual sensitivity to see things ordinary people couldn’t. Both had high levels of sensitivity. What Zhu Ming could see, Yun Zouchuan should have been able to see as well.

With her employee, Zhu Ming wasn’t as gentle. “Dummy, not all supernatural incidents require special abilities to solve. We confirmed the presence of evil energy, so Ms. Li’s story was likely true. There was something wrong with Mr. Li.

Observe carefully. He was lying on the right side of the bed, but the nightstand on that side held feminine items: hair ties, face masks, lip balm. No one would want to reach over someone else for these things, so he should have been sleeping on Ms. Li’s side. As for the specific location, observing which direction his body instinctively protected when he moved was enough. Besides, there’s no harm in guessing. Bold hypotheses, careful verification. See? This is why I’m the boss, and you’re the employee.”

Yun Zouchuan pouted, but she held her tongue. Her salary was in Zhu Ming’s hands, after all.

The storm gradually subsided, as did the arguing next door. It reached a crescendo and then quieted down, but Zhu Ming only heard the loudest yell:

“Divorce! We’re getting a divorce tomorrow!”

She wasn’t interested in other people’s marital problems. She just hoped to see the final payment in her account in the morning.

Sometime later, dawn broke, chasing away the damp darkness. Zhu Ming yawned, got up, ordered a car, and bid farewell to a red-eyed, exhausted Li Xiuya.

Kind-hearted Yun Zouchuan, having listened to the argument for hours, offered words of comfort. “Don’t be sad. You have the right to castrate any man who tries to force you to have a baby.”

    Li Xiuya: “Huh???”

Yun Zouchuan blinked, completely unaware of how strange her statement was. “That’s what my boss taught—mmmph!”

Zhu Ming clamped a hand over Yun Zouchuan’s mouth, forcing a smile. “She’s still young, going through a rebellious phase. Don’t take her seriously.”

Yun Zouchuan muffled, “Mmm! That’s exactly what you said!”

Sunlight streamed into the apartment. Mr. Li’s strange twitching subsided. Zhu Ming instructed Li Xiuya to let him out after he’d had some sun and then took her leave.

“Ms. Zhu, when will you dispose of that evil thing?” Li Xiuya asked anxiously.

“It’s powerful,” Zhu Ming said gravely. “It requires the strongest yang energy of midday to be purged. I’ll perform a ritual. I won’t invite you to watch, in case it affects you.”

Li Xiuya wasn’t particularly interested. After expressing her gratitude, she transferred the remaining payment. The notification chime was music to Zhu Ming’s ears. She waved goodbye with a cheerful smile.

Once they were alone, the smile vanished. She trudged downstairs and took the small figurine from Yun Zouchuan’s pocket.

As she clenched her fist, a writhing black mist accompanied by a faint, ear-piercing shriek escaped from between her fingers. A few steps later, bathed in the bright morning sun, Zhu Ming extended her hand, letting a handful of ash fall into a trash can.

She dusted her hands, about to stretch, when she suddenly stopped.

Reaching into her pocket, she pulled out a small, white greeting card.

A white ribbon tied to the card fluttered in the breeze. Unfolding it, she saw a strange invitation.

“You are cordially invited to our world: Night of Sacrifice. We await your presence tonight.”

Above the text, on the inside of the cover, was a drawing of a totem identical to the figurine she had just destroyed.

Zhu Ming’s brow twitched, her voice hardening. “A-Zou, check your pockets.”

Yun Zouchuan patted her loose tracksuit pockets, and after a moment, she too produced an identical card.

    Chapter 3 Appetizer (3)

Zhu Ming gritted her teeth, averting her gaze from Yin Yu’s rumpled hair and collar. “Get lost!”

Why hadn’t she escaped this illusion yet?

As if sensing her thoughts, Yin Yu’s fingertip landed on Zhu Ming’s shoulder, tapping lightly.

Her voice, seductive and teasing, echoed with amusement. “Why not continue? Mingming, admit it, you’ve been thinking about me. You never let go. I only exist here because you want me to. So why not continue to enjoy it?”

She breathed softly against Zhu Ming’s ear, her tongue flicking her earlobe.

A sharp jolt of electricity shot through Zhu Ming. Exposed and enraged, she grabbed a mop from under the sink and jabbed the wooden handle hard into Yin Yu’s stomach. “I haven’t been thinking about you! Stop talking nonsense!”

Whatever demonic fox spirit or mountain goblin you are, just get lost!

Yin Yu stumbled back, and as she fell, the world swirled and vanished like dirty water down a drain.

Zhu Ming staggered forward, finding herself back in reality.

Li Xiuya and Yun Zouchuan were standing at the doorway, one still lost in the illusion, the other wide awake.

The apartment was pitch black, the only sounds the rhythmic drumming of the rain and their breathing.

Seeing Zhu Ming had returned, Yun Zouchuan huffed. “Boss, I was pulled into an illusion too! I saw that KTV from two years ago again. Luckily, I snapped out of it quickly. I don’t see what the point of it was.”

Zhu Ming’s lips twitched. Actually, she thought, sometimes it was quite interesting.

If she guessed correctly, all three of their illusions were of a sexual nature. But for Yun Zouchuan, such experiences were few and far between. She wasn’t interested in romance and happened to be extremely averse to a particular sexual encounter she’d had, which was why she’d escaped the illusion so quickly.

Yun Zouchuan looked at Zhu Ming curiously. “Boss, why did it take you so long to wake up? And why is your face so red?”

Zhu Ming coughed. “…Children shouldn’t pry into adult matters.”

She quickly changed the subject, placing her hands on Li Xiuya’s temples. After a moment, Li Xiuya’s eyes fluttered open, still dazed.

    “Wasn’t I just…”

    “It’s nothing. You were hallucinating.”

Li Xiuya’s face flushed crimson. The memories of the illusion flooded back, and realizing she was back in her dark apartment, her face paled again.

She instinctively glanced at the bedroom door, fearing she would see her husband crawling on the floor. Thankfully, there was nothing there.

“It’s so dark,” Yun Zouchuan said, flipping the light switch. “The lights won’t turn on.”

Li Xiuya’s voice was tight with anxiety. “I knew something was wrong. The elevator and hallway lights are working, so why is only my apartment without power? It must be the ghost!”

“You’re right. Don’t worry, this is easy to fix,” Zhu Ming said calmly, her earlier embarrassment forgotten.

Li Xiuya looked at her expectantly.

Zhu Ming turned on her phone’s flashlight, located the electrical panel, flipped a switch, and then tried the light switch again. Voilà, the room was bathed in light.

    Li Xiuya: “…”

Something felt off, but nothing seemed out of place.

The apartment, over a hundred square meters, consisted of three bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and a bathroom. After a quick scan of the living room, Zhu Ming headed straight for the master bedroom.

Li Xiuya followed closely, with Yun Zouchuan bringing up the rear.

The curtains were drawn in the master bedroom, making it even darker than the living room. Zhu Ming swung her “magical tool” and kicked the door open, switching on the light.

Nothing seemed amiss. Or rather, that was the most amiss thing of all.

The bedroom was ordinary, with a double bed in the center. A man lay sleeping soundly on the right side. Unfortunately, Zhu Ming’s forceful entry had roused him from his slumber.

The man, Li Xiuya’s husband, was understandably grumpy at being woken up. Rubbing his eyes, he saw two strange women standing in his doorway and bolted upright in alarm.

“What’s going on?! Xiu Xiu, who are they?”

Li Xiuya wanted to ask the same question.

The normal, brightly lit room eased some of her fear, but she still kept her distance from her husband. “Honey, you were sleepwalking again. Do you remember anything?”

Mr. Li shook his head. “No.”

But he had been sleepwalking. Hiding behind Zhu Ming, Li Xiuya recounted the terrifying scene she had witnessed. The more Mr. Li heard, the more disturbed he became, sitting up so quickly he nearly knocked over the bedside lamp.

His blanket slipped, revealing his bare chest. Noticing the strangers in his room, he quickly pulled the covers back up. He slept in only his underwear, and while he wasn’t usually self-conscious, the situation was undeniably awkward.

“Even if I was sleepwalking, I wouldn’t be crawling on the floor. Xiu Xiu, are you having hallucinations again?” Mr. Li asked worriedly. “Maybe I should take tomorrow off, and we can go to the hospital. By the way, who are your friends…?”

He didn’t believe anything was wrong with him, and Xiu Xiu had been acting strangely for days.

Hallucinations? Looking around the bright, familiar bedroom, Li Xiuya began to doubt herself.

Zhu Ming added softly, “Deposits are non-refundable.”

Li Xiuya’s conviction returned instantly. “It wasn’t a hallucination! Honey, get dressed. These are experts I’ve hired. There’s something wrong with our house, and I want them to take a look.”

Seeing the couple about to argue, Zhu Ming intervened. “It’s alright, Mr. Li. You can stay in bed if you like. He’s not the key to this issue.”

As Zhu Ming walked further into the room, Mr. Li’s expression hardened. “What are you doing? You can’t just barge into someone’s house! This is trespassing! I’m calling the police!”

Zhu Ming twirled the stick in her hand, smiling. “Be my guest, Mr. Li.”

“You!” Mr. Li sputtered, wanting to throw her out, regardless of decorum. “And I’m not Mr. Li! My name is—”

Zhu Ming interrupted smoothly. “It doesn’t matter. Ms. Li’s husband is Mr. Li for short. Your actual surname isn’t important.”

    Mr. Li: “…”

Despite saying Mr. Li wasn’t the key, Zhu Ming still circled the bed, making both husband and wife increasingly tense. Mr. Li, in his pajamas, seemed particularly uncomfortable.

He looked as if he were enduring this for his wife’s sake, but his patience was wearing thin. “Are you done? My house is perfectly normal. We don’t need any ‘experts’ performing rituals. Please leave.”

“Found it,” Zhu Ming said, stopping by the bed, her gaze sharp as a knife. Mr. Li looked up, meeting her eyes, and shivered involuntarily.

The woman was tall and well-built, probably over 1.7 meters, her shirt tucked in to emphasize her slim waist and long legs. But that wasn’t the point. The point was that she was slowly rolling up her sleeves, revealing lean, toned muscles on her arms.

The sense of power she exuded, previously hidden by her clothing, now radiated outwards. Mr. Li’s eyes widened, sensing danger. He saw Zhu Ming’s fingers tighten around the stick, and in the next second, it whistled through the air towards him.

He could almost imagine his brains splattering across the room.

Mr. Li recoiled in terror, only to realize the stick wasn’t aimed at him.

The cloth-wrapped stick whooshed past his head, heading straight for the pillow behind him.

The man on the bed, his expression a mixture of shock and confusion, suddenly moved as if possessed. With an impressive display of flexibility, Mr. Li reached back and grabbed the stick.

He couldn’t believe it, wondering if he was dreaming. His hand, acting on its own accord, held the stick firmly.

Zhu Ming let out a chilling laugh that sent shivers down Mr. Li’s spine. Then, she kicked him off the bed.

Unable to withstand the force, Mr. Li lost his grip, his fingers catching on the cloth wrapping as he fell, finally revealing the true nature of the “magical tool”—a black crowbar.

Li Xiuya gasped, stepping back, too horrified to speak. Her husband rolled onto the floor, confronting Zhu Ming in that same unsettling, crawling posture.

Zhu Ming twirled the crowbar, the air whistling around it. Ignoring Mr. Li, she swung again at her target.

At the last moment, realizing he couldn’t stop her directly, Mr. Li opted for a different tactic. Twisting his body, he lunged towards Li Xiuya.

He moved like a striking snake, his body contorting and writhing. But even more disturbing than his movements was the expression on his face. His eyes were wide with the same fear and confusion as Li Xiuya’s. He even cried out, “Wife, save me!”

Li Xiuya stood frozen, unable to move. How could she save him? In that moment, she wanted to run.

Just before Mr. Li reached her, a strong hand shot out, grabbing his arm and slamming him to the floor. An immense, terrifying force, even stronger than the kick he’d received earlier, pinned him down.

Yun Zouchuan crouched beside him, holding him immobile with a single hand.

Simultaneously, with a loud, room-shaking thud, the pillow on the bed exploded, scattering its buckwheat hull filling everywhere. Zhu Ming poked around inside with the crowbar and pulled something out.

    “Found it.”

She held up the crowbar, displaying her find to Li Xiuya. “This is the cause of your troubles.”

    Chapter 2 Appetizer (2)

After listening to Li Xiuya’s account, Zhu Ming handed her the slightly cooled teacup. Li Xiuya drained it in one gulp, the warmth restoring some color to her pale, cold hands.

“I think I understand the situation,” Zhu Ming said, scratching her head, her hair tousled from sleep. “But I have two more questions.”

“What questions?” Li Xiuya asked anxiously, fearing the worst.

“First, have you reported this to the police?”

“Yes,” Li Xiuya replied. “But when they arrived, everything was normal. They didn’t find anything.”

Zhu Ming held up a second finger, her smile widening. “Excellent. Then, second, before we solve your problem, we need to clarify the fees.”

With a slap, Zhu Ming placed a contract on the table. “Our Small Fire God Supernatural Studio is known for its transparent pricing, responsible work ethic, excellent service, and booming clientele. Just recently, we had clients lining up to thank us…”

Yun Zouchuan, the sole employee, raised an eyebrow.

If she remembered correctly, their last client, an elderly woman from two months ago, had been persuaded by her family to renege on their agreement. Not only had she demanded a refund, but she had also called the police, accusing them of being con artists.

Fortunately, their studio had a legitimate business license and was registered with the Public Security Bureau, otherwise, things could have gotten messy.

Yun Zouchuan remained silent, not contradicting her boss’s embellishment. After all, if they didn’t get any business soon, her salary would be in jeopardy.

Li Xiuya’s head spun as she scanned the contract, her eyes glazing over at the lines for night-time travel expenses, mental distress compensation, physical exertion fees…

Zhu Ming scribbled a number in a blank space: 50,000.

“Based on your description, the danger level of this anomaly isn’t too high, so the service fee is only 50,000 yuan. Plus an additional 3,200 yuan for other expenses, totaling 53,200 yuan. We require a 50% deposit upfront, which is 26,600 yuan. The remaining balance is due upon completion. If that’s acceptable, please sign and transfer the deposit.”

In reality, the price was based on the faint residual aura Zhu Ming sensed from Li Xiuya, indicating a low level of danger.

Li Xiuya took the pen and signed without hesitation. “As long as the problem is solved, I’ll pay immediately.”

Fifty thousand yuan wasn’t a small sum for an average person, but when it came to supernatural threats and her life, it didn’t seem so expensive. She just hoped these two young, pretty girls knew what they were doing. In her mind, people in this line of work were either old men with white beards or shamanistic women.

Zhu Ming glanced at her signature, her enthusiasm unwavering. “Don’t worry, Ms. Li. We take our work seriously. We’ll make sure you’re satisfied. Just give us a moment to change.”

Coincidentally, having been woken up suddenly, all three of them were in their pajamas.

Zhu Ming quickly reappeared in an all-black ensemble: black shirt, black pants, and Doc Martens. Her hair, now neatly combed, framed her face, the strands swept aside to reveal her smooth forehead. Even in the early hours, she looked alert and energetic.

Seeing her like this, Li Xiuya felt a surge of reassurance. However…

“Are we leaving now?” The thought of returning to that terrifying house filled her with dread.

Zhu Ming’s attitude towards paying clients was always summery and warm. “It’s best to deal with these things quickly. Don’t worry, we’ll protect you.”

As she opened the door, the waiting night rushed in, bringing with it a gust of wind and rain. The cold air ruffled Zhu Ming’s freshly combed hair, adding to her untamed aura. She grabbed a cloth-wrapped stick leaning against the door. “Let’s go.”

Li Xiuya eyed the object in Zhu Ming’s hand with awe. “Is that a… ghost-catching tool?”

Zhu Ming hesitated. “You could say that. It’s handy.”

Yun Zouchuan, also changed into practical sportswear, flanked Li Xiuya on either side as they got into the car. In her haste, Li Xiuya had only grabbed her keys, leaving everything else behind, including proper shoes; she was wearing slippers.

Zhu Ming took the wheel, set the navigation, and drove through the pouring rain.

About half an hour later, they arrived at Li Xiuya’s apartment building.

The Peony Residential Complex? The property values here were high. It seemed their client was well-off.

“My apartment is on the twelfth floor.” The elevator light was on, the red arrow on the display slowly changing. With a ding, the elevator arrived.

The door to apartment 1201 was tightly shut. Li Xiuya fumbled with her keys, her hands shaking so badly she couldn’t get them into the lock.

    “Let me.”

Zhu Ming took the keys, positioning Li Xiuya behind her, sandwiched between herself and Yun Zouchuan.

Li Xiuya withdrew her hand, touching her fingers thoughtfully. She had brushed against Zhu Ming’s hand and been surprised by its alarming heat.

The door creaked open, scraping against the floor.

Zhu Ming had a feeling she should have charged more.

The moment they stepped through the doorway, she was abruptly pulled back to a specific point seven years ago: her high school, an ordinary local school.

Zhu Ming was eighteen again, wearing an ill-fitting, outdated school uniform, standing in the empty corridor of the teaching building.

Late at night, the school was deserted. The classroom lights were off, only the motion-sensor lights in the hallway still illuminated.

Zhu Ming looked around. The school was as silent as a tomb.

Her thoughts felt sluggish. She looked down at the blood on her hands, taking a moment to remember what she was doing.

Right. She was going to the bathroom to wash off the blood from her nosebleed.

Zhu Ming walked towards the restroom, her head drooping, her face numb with a sleep-like weariness.

    Tap, tap, tap…

Her footsteps echoed in the corridor, the lights behind her clicking off one by one. She entered the bathroom, turned on the faucet, and started washing her face. The water quickly rinsed away the rusty-smelling blood.

Then, with a bang, Zhu Ming looked up to see the bathroom door slam shut and lock from the outside.

No one was there. The last of the hallway lights went out.

Zhu Ming turned off the faucet, shaking her hands, not at all surprised. Memories buried deep within her mind surfaced. If she remembered correctly, she had been transported back to a night in her senior year when she had been bullied.

The shadowy, ghostly night held no fear for her. Even reliving it again wasn’t terrifying. Back then, her reactions had been slow, her mind numb. The fear that would have been overwhelming for others barely caused a ripple within her. This was why she had been ostracized, why she couldn’t understand normal emotions.

But she wasn’t a robot. Even the smallest ripple left a mark.

She just felt disappointed, bored. Zhu Ming leaned against the sink in silence.

    What would happen next?

    She would…

In the darkness, Zhu Ming’s eyes gradually brightened. Right. She was coming. The most beautiful, gentle light in her life was coming to save her.

    Creak—

The locked door opened, and a woman in a white lab coat appeared.

She was like a pear blossom in spring, elegant and gentle. She looked at Zhu Ming, her eyes filled with the care the young girl had longed for. “Mingming.”

“Yin Yu,” Zhu Ming whispered her name, feeling a wave of relief wash over her.

“Are you alright?” Yin Yu stepped closer, enveloping Zhu Ming in a hug, her slender fingers caressing her wet cheeks.

Zhu Ming felt a strange surge rise within her. Had they ever been this close back then?

But she couldn’t think clearly. Those fingertips traced her cheek, her earlobe, then settled on her lips. The woman’s light fragrance wrapped around her like a serpent, igniting a shameful desire within her.

    “Mingming…”

In a moment she couldn’t quite place, Zhu Ming found herself clutching Yin Yu’s long, silky hair, as smooth as water, engulfing her like the darkness of the night.

Their faces were almost touching. Yin Yu’s eyes, hazy like the morning mist, threatened to drown Zhu Ming in their depths, drown her in their gaze, in their breath.

It was unclear who initiated it, but their soft lips met. Zhu Ming wrapped her arms around Yin Yu’s neck, lost in the kiss.

She couldn’t see the menacing darkness anymore, nor feel the sting of others’ disdain. She had light, love, and warmth. Her lover would give her happiness.

The burning desire seemed to consume her will. A cat curled up by a warm winter stove never wants to get up. A person lost in desire and pleasure never wants to wake.

The kiss deepened. Yin Yu’s white coat fell to the floor. Her usually cool hands grew warm. A serpent gliding through water, a butterfly kissing a flower, they clung to each other for warmth.

“Yin Yu, do you love me?” Zhu Ming asked breathlessly.

“I love you,” Yin Yu murmured submissively, as if hopelessly in love. “Mingming, will you stay with me forever?”

    Wrong.

Zhu Ming’s back hit the cold marble of the sink. Her eyes snapped open.

    She pushed the woman away.

    Wrong!

Awareness flooded back. Looking at the woman before her, cheeks flushed and alluring, Zhu Ming felt a mixture of shame and anger that threatened to explode.

Wrong, wrong, wrong! Yin Yu hadn’t done this with her back then. She had opened the door, expressed concern, and left. This passionate scene was nothing more than a manifestation of Zhu Ming’s hidden desires and admiration.

Besides, Yin Yu had never said those three words.

And most importantly… they had broken up long ago!

This wasn’t real. It was an illusion, a fabrication. She didn’t love Yin Yu anymore… Zhu Ming’s hands trembled as she zipped up her uniform.

But Yin Yu, the other participant in this illusion, wasn’t letting her go.

She looked at Zhu Ming with seductive eyes, licking her luscious lips. She continued to advance, her voice husky and alluring. “Mingming, don’t you want to touch me… don’t you love me anymore?”

    Chapter 1 Appetizer

The rain poured down relentlessly, the air thick and humid. Heavy moisture permeated the small house.

A window stood open, banging rhythmically against its frame in the wind and rain. Fat raindrops splattered onto the windowsill and the floor below, forming rivulets that snaked and twisted across the surface.

A woman stood by the window, her hair as black as night, her lips a vibrant red. She gazed out at the rain-blurred night, still as a doll, devoid of any discernible life.

Slowly, she turned. A flash of lightning split the sky, momentarily bathing the world in an eerie white light. The stark contrast made her appear almost ghostly.

Zhu Ming felt a jolt, a sudden icy clutch around her heart.

She didn’t want to hear it.

    But she had to.

“Why not extract Zhu Ming’s soul directly?”

“It’s not time yet. I want to change the plan.”

“Have you truly fallen in love with her?”

A soft laugh echoed. “Love? Can beings like us fall in love with humans? It seems like a novel experience. Unfortunately, I haven’t. I wouldn’t call it love… Hmm? Awake?”

The woman by the window glided towards the girl lying half-conscious on the floor. She knelt down, her long, cool fingers gently brushing aside the girl’s hair. Zhu Ming struggled to open her eyes, looking up at the woman looming over her.

This was the lover she cherished, the most beautiful being in her heart.

Yet now, through stinging, heavy eyelids, Zhu Ming saw something she shouldn’t have. At the center of her lover’s form, composed of countless overlapping phantom images, was…

    BOOM!

A clap of thunder jolted the woman awake. Sitting up in bed, she clutched her head, pressing hard against her temples.

    Another dream. The same nightmare.

Zhu Ming pounded the bed in frustration. Glancing up, she noticed the window, blown open at some point during the night, now rattling in the wind. Rain lashed into the room, mirroring the scene from her dream.

    …Zhu Ming’s mood darkened further.

She got out of bed, intending to close the window she’d forgotten to shut the previous night.

But something outside caught her eye, momentarily distracting her from her task.

A figure huddled under an umbrella, shivering, paced back and forth in front of the gate downstairs. Suddenly, as if sensing something, the figure looked up, revealing a pale, blurred face.

Their eyes met. The figure shrieked and turned to flee.

Zhu Ming, living in a small two-story house, swung one leg over the windowsill, ready to jump. The figure with the umbrella, glancing back, saw this and slipped in the accumulated rainwater.

Just then, the front door swung open. Another person rushed out, grabbing the fallen visitor before they could get up.

Moments later, the living room downstairs was bathed in warm light, illuminating everyone present.

Having dropped her umbrella in the fall, Li Xiuya was soaked to the bone. Used to being impeccably dressed, she hadn’t been this disheveled in years, but right now, she had more pressing concerns.

The girl who had pulled her inside wore a long, glossy black braid that reached her hips. She didn’t look Han Chinese, possessing an air of ethnic simplicity and charm. Her light-colored eyes held a calming clarity… which would have been even more effective if Li Xiuya hadn’t just experienced her incredible strength.

Li Xiuya offered a polite smile and turned to the woman opposite her.

Earlier, this woman had been at the second-floor window. In the flashes of lightning, she had appeared as nothing more than a shadowy figure. A figure lurking at the window in the dead of night, staring… Having just experienced something truly unsettling, Li Xiuya couldn’t handle that kind of fright.

Her fear had led to a misunderstanding. Now, seeing clearly, she realized it wasn’t a ghost but a living person.

This woman possessed a completely different aura from the innocent-looking girl. Her shoulder-length, choppy hair was a mess, streaked with red on the left side. Her features were delicate, but her eyes held a sharp, almost aggressive glint.

However, now she was looking at Li Xiuya with a friendly smile, her usual aloofness masked by polite conversation.

“Why did you run away just now? Since you’ve come all this way in the middle of the night, just tell us what’s wrong.”

Zhu Ming offered a warm welcome. “A-Zou, get our guest some hot water and a towel.”

She gestured to the girl with the ethnic features. “My name is Zhu Ming, and this is Yun Zouchuan, my employee. Since you’ve come here so late, you must know what we do, right?”

Li Xiuya nodded quickly. “I do.”

The Small Fire God Supernatural Studio, located at 126 Ping’an Street in the southern district of Hua City, was a bit out of the way. If it weren’t for the unbelievable events of tonight, Li Xiuya would never have driven here alone in the early hours of the morning.

She had heard that this place dealt with matters that defied common sense. To put it bluntly, they caught ghosts. Li Xiuya had never believed in such things before, but now she had no choice.

Soon, the hot water and towel arrived. Li Xiuya clutched the cup, shivering as she recounted her story.

“Something strange has been happening in my house. Or rather, it happened half an hour ago. My house… is haunted!”

Li Xiuya’s voice rose in agitation, nearly spilling the tea. Seeing her fear override even the heat of the water, Zhu Ming reached out and took the cup from her.

“Take your time. We’re experienced with these things. We’ll help you no matter what’s happening.”

Zhu Ming’s calm demeanor and encouraging smile helped Li Xiuya regain some composure. “Actually, strange things have been happening for several days now, but when I told people, they didn’t believe me. Until tonight… I just couldn’t take it anymore. I saw… I saw my husband crawling on the floor like an insect!”

Li Xiuya covered her mouth, the sheer terror threatening to make her vomit. “I called out to him, but he didn’t seem to hear me. The lights wouldn’t turn on, and my phone had no signal. Everything was fine before I went to sleep. Oh, right… I woke up because I felt cold.”

The stormy night had made sleep restless, and the chill had woken Li Xiuya. She found her blankets pulled off. Turning her head, she saw her husband at the door.

The familiar man looked strange and terrifying. His upper body was inside the room, facing her, while the lower half was hidden in the darkness beyond the door. His eyes were closed, his head slowly turning from side to side.

He moved, inching forward, writhing, like a giant insect in human skin, crawling towards her.

Frozen in terror, Li Xiuya watched helplessly until a clap of thunder jolted her awake. She scrambled out of bed, desperate to escape the nightmare.

But it wasn’t a dream. In the end, she could only flee her once-loving home and seek help.

Li Xiuya wrung her hands anxiously. “What should I do? How could this happen?”

A man crawling like an insect? Zhu Ming considered this. “What other strange things have happened? When did it start?”

Li Xiuya swallowed hard. “Thinking back, it started six days ago. My husband came back from a business trip that day, and we… were intimate. But then I dreamt I was with someone I couldn’t see clearly. It felt wrong, so I woke up. And I found my husband… continuing in reality. I was angry and pushed him away, but he just went back to sleep as if he didn’t know anything.”

After that, things became increasingly bizarre. She frequently dreamt of being intimate with someone, the figure in her dreams becoming clearer… and more terrifying. It wasn’t human. It was a monster.

The strangeness seeped into her waking life. Li Xiuya had to confide in her friends.

First, her husband became clingy at night, sleepwalking, but with no memory upon waking. Then, his personality and even his appearance began to change. Yesterday morning, while brushing her teeth, Li Xiuya caught sight of her husband behind her in the mirror.

The familiar man stared at her with cold, sinister eyes. In the reflection, his features seemed to melt and distort under the harsh bathroom light. The corners of his mouth stretched upwards in a grotesque, unsettling parody of a smile.

Startled, Li Xiuya turned around. Her husband yawned sleepily, looking much the same as always, just a little tired.

At that point, Li Xiuya still didn’t fully believe she was dealing with something supernatural. She told herself her friends were right, that it was just stress and hallucinations. But the doubt lingered, and she began searching for solutions in the realm of the paranormal.

She had found the Small Fire God Supernatural Studio advertised on a local online forum. The account posting the ad had a low rating, and most of the replies were mocking, ridiculing the idea of such things in this day and age. Only one supporting comment claimed their problem had been solved, but this person was either accused of being a paid shill or delusional.

Li Xiuya read that account’s comments repeatedly, sensing a genuine conviction and trust in their words.

So tonight, when her husband underwent that terrifying transformation, Li Xiuya, driven to desperation, had come seeking their help.
