    Chapter 119: Don’t Wait

Zhou Tianzui sat on the sofa while Yu Qiao busied herself with New Year’s Eve dinner preparations. Neighbors came to visit, bringing New Year’s goods, children in new clothes running around, greeting the adults, occasionally stopping in front of Zhou Tianzui, their small hands extended, “Sister, have some candy.”

Colorful candies in their palms, milk candies, fruit candies. She picked one, “Thank you.”

“Sister, are you unhappy?” A childish voice, almost drowned out by the noise and chatter. Zhou Tianzui lifted the child onto her lap. She was about three years old, her speech still a little unclear, clinging to Zhou Tianzui. She was the granddaughter of the upstairs neighbor. Yu Qiao was always envious, having mentioned it several times. Zhou Tianzui rarely came home, so she wasn’t very close to the little girl, who, however, seemed to like her, unafraid of her aloof demeanor, looking up at her with a smile, “Grandma said we have to be happy during New Year’s.”

Zhou Tianzui asked, “Are you happy?”

“I’m happy.” The little girl, smelling of milk and baby powder, said, “I have candy, and cola, Mommy doesn’t usually let me have these.”

Zhou Tianzui patted her head, “Then if you eat them, won’t Mommy be unhappy?”

The little girl paused, as if considering this, Zhou Tianzui watching her. She extended her hand, “Then I won’t eat it, I don’t want Mommy to be unhappy.”

Her voice was filled with grievance. Zhou Tianzui unwrapped a candy. The little girl watched her, her eyes wide, swallowing. Zhou Tianzui held the candy out to her, “Here.”

The little girl looked at her.

Zhou Tianzui said, “We’ll eat it secretly, so Mommy won’t know, and she won’t be unhappy.”

The little girl blinked, but didn’t take the candy, just looked at Zhou Tianzui, “But Mommy will find out eventually.”

She climbed off Zhou Tianzui’s lap and ran off. Zhou Tianzui looked at the candy in her hand for a moment, then put it in her mouth. It wasn’t sweet, but bitter. She leaned back against the sofa. Her phone lit up with several New Year’s greetings. She scrolled up and saw You Ruxu’s message. After a moment of thought, she replied: [Are you free tomorrow?]

You Ruxu and Wu Xiulian were having dinner. Wu Xiulian had initiated a video call, and Wu Xiulian’s mother, seeing them, frowned, “I told you to come home earlier, and you didn’t even come back for New Year’s.”

Wu Xiulian said, “It was an unexpected situation.”

Wu Xiulian’s mother asked, “Is Ruxu fully recovered?”

You Ruxu looked up, “Mom, I’m fine now.”

“You just don’t listen, I told you not to be a reporter, and you didn’t listen.” Wu Xiulian’s mother started nagging. You Shu said, “You were also a reporter, and you didn’t find it tiring.”

“I didn’t find it tiring.” Wu Xiulian’s mother said, “I just want my daughter to rely on us, what’s wrong with that? She couldn’t even come home for New Year’s. I couldn’t even go see her last time she was hurt, I could have taken care of her if I were there.”

You Shu, unable to argue with her, just kept quiet.

You Ruxu looked at Wu Xiulian’s mother, “Mom, I’ll come home with Aunt after the New Year.”

“How long will you be staying?” Wu Xiulian’s mother asked. You Ruxu said, “I haven’t decided yet, probably a bit longer this time.”

Wu Xiulian’s mother smiled, “Okay then.”

She went to the kitchen, leaving her phone on the table. You Shu sat in front of it. Wu Xiulian handed the phone to You Ruxu, who put down her chopsticks, walked over to the window, and called out, “Dad.”

“Ruxu, don’t mind your mother’s nagging, she hasn’t been sleeping well lately.” You Shu said, “You and that family…”

You Ruxu knew he was referring to Yu Qiao and Zhou Tianzui. You Shu and Wu Xiulian’s mother had called after the news broke. Wu Xiulian’s mother had said, “Ruxu, we’ve wronged them, your father and I were thinking of coming to Jindu for the New Year.”

    You Ruxu had dissuaded them.

It was her fault, she shouldn’t blame Wu Xiulian and You Shu. She had promised to handle it, and after repeated assurances, Wu Xiulian’s mother had finally agreed not to come, but she had been restless ever since, unable to eat or sleep properly, saying she kept thinking about it.

You Ruxu said, “Dad, don’t worry, I know what to do.”

You Shu said, “If you need your mother and me to come, just say the word. Ruxu, remember, we’re family, no matter what happens, you’re our daughter.”

You Ruxu’s eyes reddened slightly, looking at the fireworks outside the window, “Dad, why did you choose me back then?”

    So many children, why her?

If they hadn’t chosen her, would they be so worried now? Perhaps they would have a daughter by their side, taking care of them.

You Shu chuckled, “There’s no ‘why.’”

You Ruxu hung up. Wu Xiulian, behind her, called out, “Xu Xu.”

She turned around, “What’s up, Aunt?” Wu Xiulian asked, “Talking to your father?”

You Ruxu said, “I asked him why he brought me home. Aunt, if it wasn’t for me…”

Wu Xiulian said, “If it wasn’t for you, our family would be happy now?”

She said, “Xu Xu, do you know how proud your parents are of you?”

You Ruxu looked at her, “Of me?”

Wu Xiulian nodded, “You might feel guilty towards Zhou Qiming, towards his family, and so does your aunt, I’m even more…” Wu Xiulian said, “But you’ve never let us down, you’re always our pride and joy.”

You Ruxu’s lips pressed into a thin line.

Fireworks exploded outside, their colors reflected on the window. Wu Xiulian said, “Another year has passed.” She said to You Ruxu, “Xu Xu, Happy New Year.”

You Ruxu suddenly remembered her first New Year at the You family’s home. She had been looking at the fireworks outside, listening to the firecrackers, a table full of food, candies on the coffee table, but she hadn’t dared touch anything, just sat there quietly. Wu Xiulian had sat beside her, offered her a candy, and said, “Xu Xu, Happy New Year!”

She had smiled, “Aunt, Happy New Year.”

Just then, her phone buzzed with a notification. You Ruxu took it out and saw Zhou Tianzui’s message, asking if she was free tomorrow. You Ruxu wanted to reply immediately, but thinking of Yu Qiao, her finger hesitated, then after a moment, she replied, “I’m free.”

Zhou Tianzui was already in bed. Yu Qiao hadn’t spoken much to her since their argument, treating her like a stranger. She hadn’t even said anything when Zhou Tianzui went to her room. She received You Ruxu’s message while lying in bed, staring at You Ruxu’s profile picture for a moment. It was a black and white checkered pattern. When they first added each other on WeChat, You Ruxu’s profile picture had been her ID photo. Zhou Tianzui had chuckled, “Who uses that as a profile picture?”

And You Ruxu had replied, “I saw other senior reporters use it, isn’t it good?”

It had been shared countless times in their group chat, but Zhou Tianzui hadn’t told her the truth, just said, “It’s not very appropriate.”

You Ruxu, listening to her, had changed her profile picture, trying several options before settling on this one.

Zhou Tianzui clicked on the profile picture, and You Ruxu asked, “What’s wrong?”

She replied: [I’ll come find you tomorrow.]

You Ruxu, receiving the message, felt a strange sense of anticipation. She sat on the sofa, listening to the Spring Festival Gala playing on TV. Wu Xiulian asked, “Xu Xu, want some fruit?”

She called her name twice before You Ruxu reacted.

Wu Xiulian asked, “What are you thinking about?”

    You Ruxu looked down, “Nothing.”

Wu Xiulian said, “Thinking about Dr. Zhou?”

You Ruxu pursed her lips. Wu Xiulian said, “Xu Xu, regarding her mother, your aunt will go talk to her again…”

“Aunt.” You Ruxu interrupted her. “Let me handle it.”

Wu Xiulian looked at her, then fell silent.

The sounds of laughter and cheerful banter from the Spring Festival Gala filled the room. You Ruxu sat on the sofa, like an emotionless doll, her expression blank, just quietly watching.

She was thinking about Zhou Tianzui, about seeing her tomorrow, what would they talk about, did Yu Qiao know?

She thought about it even as she went to bed, barely sleeping all night, woken by the sound of firecrackers, she didn’t bother trying to sleep anymore, just sat by the window, wrapped in a blanket, watching the fireworks explode outside, their colors bright and dazzling. She started reminiscing about her first meeting with Zhou Tianzui, their first conversation, sitting in the car together, the scent of disinfectant filling the air.

She remembered Zhou Tianzui in her white coat, standing at the operating room door, she remembered interviewing her, she remembered Zhou Tianzui smiling at her, those unspoken moments, now sweet and bittersweet memories.

Outside, Wu Xiulian called out, “Xu Xu, are you awake?”

She had been sitting for too long, her legs and back numb. She stretched for a bit before going out. Opening the door, she saw Zhou Tianzui sitting on the sofa, she froze, wondering if she was dreaming.

Wu Xiulian smiled, “Go wash up, Dr. Zhou’s having breakfast with us.”

You Ruxu snapped back to reality and hurried to the bathroom. Looking at her reflection in the mirror, her hair disheveled, her clothes rumpled, she felt a little embarrassed. She quickly tidied herself up, even changing her clothes, before going out. Zhou Tianzui was sitting at the dining table. You Ruxu heard Wu Xiulian ask, “Your mother…”

“My mom went out this morning.” Yu Qiao had been invited to Auntie Yang’s house, but she declined, saying she had something to do. Yu Qiao hadn’t asked what it was, just left quietly. Zhou Tianzui had watched her go, then after a long moment, went to You Ruxu’s apartment.

She hadn’t slept all night, although she was wearing makeup, her exhaustion was evident. You Ruxu sat beside her, noticing a few gray strands at Zhou Tianzui’s temples. Her heart ached, her gaze lingering on Zhou Tianzui’s profile. Zhou Tianzui turned to her, “What’s wrong?”

    You Ruxu said, “Nothing.”

Zhou Tianzui sat quietly. Wu Xiulian said, “You two eat, I’m going out to buy some things.”

She deliberately gave them some space, knowing Zhou Tianzui had something to say. You Ruxu nodded.

After Wu Xiulian left, You Ruxu put down her chopsticks. Zhou Tianzui looked over, “Not eating?”

Before You Ruxu could speak, Zhou Tianzui said, “Break that habit of not eating properly.”

Hearing her words, You Ruxu’s eyes teared up, she lowered her head, “Anything else?”

Zhou Tianzui said, “Be careful at work.”

    You Ruxu said, “I know.”

Zhou Tianzui said, “Eat your meals on time, and don’t be so picky.”

You Ruxu looked down, her vision blurring, a lump forming in her throat, making it painful to swallow. She still managed to say, “You too, eat more, rest more.”

From the corner of her eye, she saw the gray strands at Zhou Tianzui’s temples, the sight making her heart ache, a suffocating pain. She quickly looked away. Zhou Tianzui said, “I eat more than you.”

    “Do you?”

    “Let’s compare.”

    “Childish.”

They chuckled softly, remembering their usual banter, Zhou Tianzui took a bite of her food, but couldn’t swallow, the taste lingering in her mouth. She took a sip of soup, chewing slowly, and finally swallowed.

    The living room was quiet.

She put down her chopsticks, wiped her mouth with a napkin, and said to You Ruxu, “Give me your hand.”

You Ruxu turned and extended her hand, “What is it?”

Zhou Tianzui said, “A New Year’s gift.”

You Ruxu’s hand was cold. She looked down; it was a key, to their apartment. You Ruxu’s lips twitched, a strained smile, “Are you moving out?”

Zhou Tianzui said, “Yes, I’m going to live with my mom.”

You Ruxu nodded, noticing the red string bracelet was gone from Zhou Tianzui’s wrist. She looked at her own wrist, still wearing the matching bracelet, her nose tingling slightly, “That’s good, you should spend more time with Auntie.”

Zhou Tianzui said, “Then I’ll be going now.”

“Zhou Tianzui.” You Ruxu suddenly called out, and Zhou Tianzui, about to stand up, stopped and looked at her.

You Ruxu looked at Zhou Tianzui, “I want…”

“Don’t.” Zhou Tianzui interrupted her, their eyes meeting, a flicker of sadness in Zhou Tianzui’s eyes as she smiled faintly, her expression not cold like yesterday, but calm and gentle, “Don’t wait for me.”

You Ruxu’s throat tightened, she couldn’t even manage a single word.

    Chapter 118: Resentment

You Ruxu looked at Zhou Tianzui, who was trying to maintain a casual demeanor, saying, “My stomach’s not feeling well, I…”

Before she could finish, You Ruxu buried her face in Zhou Tianzui’s embrace. Zhou Tianzui froze, speechless. She asked, “What are you doing?”

“Hugging you.” You Ruxu said, “I want to hug you.”

She asked, “Are you also hurting?”

Zhou Tianzui’s voice was tight, “No.”

“I am.” You Ruxu’s usual reserved nature, her ability to initiate physical contact and verbalize her emotions, was unusual, forcing Zhou Tianzui to drop her pretense, “Why did you lie to me?”

Zhou Tianzui asked, “Lie about what?”

“Would lying make you feel better?” You Ruxu said, “Do you really want to break up with me?”

    Zhou Tianzui hesitated.

You Ruxu continued, “You said we should try again,” looking up at Zhou Tianzui, “We haven’t even tried, and you’re already giving up on me?”

Her eyes were red-rimmed, tears threatening to spill, but she didn’t cry, her lips pressed together in a stubborn line.

    Zhou Tianzui closed her eyes.

She wanted to hug You Ruxu back, but she couldn’t lift her arms.

You Ruxu said, “Your mother hates me, I know, she’s very angry, I also know, I can accept it, I can wait.”

Zhou Tianzui said, “What if, it takes a long time?”

“I can wait, even a year, ten years.” You Ruxu looked at her, her eyes filled with determination, “As long as you don’t break up with me, I can wait.”

    Zhou Tianzui was torn.

She looked at You Ruxu, then thinking of Yu Qiao, the pain was a gaping wound, tearing her apart, paralyzing her. She was drawn to You Ruxu’s gentle promise, clinging to the sliver of hope for a future together, but she also couldn’t bear to see Yu Qiao suffer.

Would her mother ever let go?

    Perhaps A Ran was right.

They could try again, try again…

Zhou Tianzui slowly raised her arms, wrapped them around You Ruxu’s waist, and buried her face in You Ruxu’s shoulder, holding her tightly.

They were gone for quite a while. Song Chenyue said, “Should we go check on them?”

Yao Zhao said, “Check on what? Just eat.”

She had a vague understanding of their relationship now. They were closer than ordinary friends, perhaps because of You Ruxu’s earlier distress, or maybe they were discussing something important.

As Yao Zhao had guessed, they returned together, You Ruxu’s expression much calmer now. They didn’t eat much, just finished their milk tea. Song Chenyue asked, “Want another one?”

You Ruxu shook her head, “No, thank you.”

Song Chenyue smiled. They enjoyed their meal, especially knowing that Yao Zhao was doing well, her grades improving. Before they left, Zhou Tianzui offered to take Yao Zhao shopping for clothes, and Yao Zhao said, “Thank you, Dr. Zhou, but I’ve already bought some.”

    Zhou Tianzui looked at her.

Yao Zhao added, “By the way, Dr. Zhou, we saw Auntie earlier, while we were having dinner.”

You Ruxu’s pupils constricted, she looked at Yao Zhao. Zhou Tianzui asked, “My mom?”

Yao Zhao nodded, “Yes, she was eating at the restaurant across the street, with someone.”

Zhou Tianzui smiled faintly and looked at You Ruxu, noticing her pale face, she swallowed the words on the tip of her tongue, and Yao Zhao said, “Then Sister, we should be going.”

You Ruxu waved goodbye. The two girls, hand in hand, left, their laughter echoing behind them.

At the intersection, You Ruxu looked at Zhou Tianzui.

Zhou Tianzui said, “Should I drive you home?”

You Ruxu said, “You should go home first, your mother might need you.”

Having dinner at a restaurant on New Year’s Eve, she must have had a reason. Zhou Tianzui paused and said, “Okay.”

You Ruxu, watching her turn to leave, “I’ll message you when I get home.”

    Would she reply this time?

    Zhou Tianzui said, “Okay.”

You Ruxu’s heart felt lighter, a faint smile appearing on her face, the setting sun casting a warm glow on her profile, the smile a little fragile. Zhou Tianzui watched her quietly, and after a few minutes, they parted ways.

Zhou Tianzui arrived home. Yu Qiao was still sitting on the sofa. Hearing her enter, she turned and said, “You’re back.”

She knew Zhou Tianzui had been invited to dinner. No one had mentioned You Ruxu’s name at home all week, as if she had been completely erased from their lives, so Yu Qiao, receiving a call from Wu Xiulian earlier, had been surprised.

Even more surprised to hear about the work journal.

Her hands were burning, thinking about Wu Xiulian’s words, she was still furious. Zhou Tianzui, seeing her expression, asked, “What’s wrong?”

Yu Qiao didn’t want to mention You Ruxu, “Nothing, have you eaten yet?”

“I have.” Zhou Tianzui said, “What about you?”

Yu Qiao hadn’t eaten anything, but she wasn’t hungry, so she nodded.

Zhou Tianzui asked, “What did you eat?”

Yu Qiao said, “Just something simple.”

She stood up and went to the kitchen. Zhou Tianzui sat on the sofa, listening to the clattering of dishes. It was New Year’s Eve, dinner preparations started early, the sounds of fireworks and firecrackers outside incessant, the festive atmosphere intensifying. A neighbor knocked on the door, chatting, bringing over some food. Yu Qiao greeted them with a smile, and they mentioned Zhou Tianzui, “She’s not young anymore, is she? Thirty already?”

    “Yes, she’s not young anymore.”

    “Time to find a partner.”

“Indeed, I heard that it’s harder to recover after giving birth at an older age.” The neighbor said to Yu Qiao, “And you’re still able to help with childcare now, but you won’t be able to in a few years.”

Yu Qiao looked at Zhou Tianzui.

Zhou Tianzui sat on the sofa, listening to their chatter, then looked up at Yu Qiao, their eyes meeting, “I can’t reason with that child, let her be, it’s her own life, whether she gets married or not.”

“How can you just let her be? She’s enjoying her single life now, but what about when she’s old? We’ve been through it, we should guide her, how about I introduce my nephew to Xiao Tian?”

Yu Qiao said, “You ask Xiao Tian yourself.”

The neighbor looked at Zhou Tianzui, about to speak, when Zhou Tianzui said coldly, “Auntie Zhao, I’m not planning to get married.”

Auntie Zhao, her enthusiasm dampened by Zhou Tianzui’s tone, chuckled awkwardly and exchanged a look with the other neighbor. Yu Qiao said, “Have some sunflower seeds.”

“I left the stove on at home.” Auntie Zhao said, “I have to go back.”

The other neighbor said, “I have to go take care of my granddaughter, I’ll be going now.”

The previously lively living room was suddenly quiet again. Yu Qiao turned to Zhou Tianzui, “What was that about?”

Zhou Tianzui said, “Mom, I was just being honest.”

“Honest?” Yu Qiao said, “Giving me attitude again, is that it?” She abruptly stood up, “Or are you still thinking about that woman? Let me tell you, not a chance!”

Zhou Tianzui looked up at Yu Qiao.

Yu Qiao, furious, clearly not open to discussion. Zhou Tianzui, after a moment of silence, said, “I’m going to my room.”

Just as she finished speaking, her phone vibrated. Yu Qiao stared at her, Zhou Tianzui’s expression calm. Yu Qiao asked, “Who is it?”

    Zhou Tianzui said, “A colleague.”

    Yu Qiao said, “Show me.”

    Zhou Tianzui said, “Mom…”

“Show me!” Yu Qiao yelled, reaching for the phone. Zhou Tianzui held onto it. They struggled briefly. Yu Qiao, unable to snatch it, her eyes red with anger, asked, “Is it You Ruxu?”

It had been a week since Yu Qiao last uttered that name, Zhou Tianzui was momentarily dazed.

Yu Qiao, in a frenzy, tried to grab the phone. Zhou Tianzui stumbled back, hitting the sofa and falling onto it. Yu Qiao stood there, looking down at her, “Mom, please don’t do this.”

“Do what?” Yu Qiao’s voice was cold, “Like you? Disobeying me behind my back?”

Zhou Tianzui said, “A lot has happened recently, I think we should wait until we’ve calmed down before discussing the future.”

Yu Qiao scoffed, “Discuss what future? Trying to convince me to accept you and You Ruxu?”

Zhou Tianzui said, “I know you won’t accept it now.”

“And I won’t accept it in the future either.” Yu Qiao said, “What else do you want to say? Are you going to defend her? Tell me how sorry she is, how she’s always wanted to return your father’s journal?”

Zhou Tianzui’s expression changed slightly, “You know about that?”

Yu Qiao said, “Of course I know, and if you’re trying to use this to excuse her actions, it won’t work.”

“Mom, I’m not trying to excuse her actions.” Zhou Tianzui said, “I just want to say that she’s also made an effort, she hasn’t been happy all these years, she’s always felt guilty, just give her a chance to make amends…”

“Make amends how?” Yu Qiao said, “By being with you? By taking care of me in my old age?”

She chuckled, a bitter sound, “Xiao Tian, do you know what you’re saying?”

    Zhou Tianzui said, “I do.”

“You don’t know anything!” Yu Qiao glared at her fiercely, “Do you love her that much? If I went to the TV station now, reported her for abusing her position to seduce you, for being in a relationship with you, for your shameful affair, do you think she would lose her job?”

    Zhou Tianzui’s face paled, “Mom?”

    She looked at Yu Qiao.

Yu Qiao continued, “Do I seem like a stranger to you now? Xiao Tian, do you think I’m a stranger? Am I the one standing in the way of your happiness? A cruel and unreasonable mother, am I?”

She said, “Xiao Tian, if I really did that, would you hate me?”

Zhou Tianzui looked at her, silent.

Yu Qiao said, “You think I’m making things up, slandering her, don’t you?”

Zhou Tianzui said, “Mom, we don’t have to do this.”

“No need for this?” Yu Qiao said, “Is it because it’s You Ruxu? If it weren’t her, would you still forgive me?”

Zhou Tianzui didn’t answer, the memories of those agonizing years, the struggles, the pain, a roaring torrent threatening to consume her, her heart pierced by invisible blades, a numb, suffocating ache.

Her body was tense. Yu Qiao looked down at her and asked, “Xiao Tian, just tell me, if I reported her, would you hate me? If I contacted her father and told him who Shi Ran is, would you resent me?”

Yu Qiao continued, “You would, you would hate me, you would resent me.”

Zhou Tianzui looked up at Yu Qiao.

A firework exploded outside, illuminating Yu Qiao’s face, thin and pale, her expression grim, her voice soft and distant, “Xiao Tian, you see, if I really did that, you would even resent your own mother.”

She looked out the window, her voice devoid of its usual hysteria, yet filled with a deep sorrow, “How can I forgive her?”

    Chapter 117: Outside the Door

Yao Zhao was choosing her milk tea flavor, her head lowered, when she heard Song Chenyue beside her exclaim, “Huh?”

    Yao Zhao turned, “What’s wrong?”

Song Chenyue said, “I think I just saw Dr. Zhou’s mother.”

    “Auntie?” Yao Zhao said, “Where?”

Song Chenyue said, “At the restaurant across the street.”

There were many restaurants near the school, one after another. Song Chenyue had met Yu Qiao when she and Yao Zhao went to visit Zhou Tianzui at the hospital, so she recognized her. Yao Zhao said, “She’s alone?”

“No, there’s someone else with her.” Song Chenyue said. The other person was wearing a mask and dressed inconspicuously, so she didn’t recognize them. Yao Zhao said, “She must have something to discuss.”

Song Chenyue said, “Probably, but Dr. Zhou is really amazing.”

Yao Zhao lowered her head, waiting for her milk tea, “Amazing how?”

“Think about it,” Song Chenyue said, “after everything she went through, she still became a doctor, and that incident at the hospital, she even helped, I heard family has a huge impact on a person, if I were Dr. Zhou, I think I would be messed up.”

Yao Zhao said, “Me too, probably.”

“That’s why she’s amazing.” Song Chenyue said, “It makes me so angry that people are still criticizing her online.”

    Yao Zhao smiled.

Song Chenyue turned and poked her waist. Yao Zhao told her to stop it, playfully pushing her back. At the entrance of the milk tea shop, the two girls played around, the cold wind from outside turned warm by the heater, blowing towards the people entering the restaurant across the street.

Yu Qiao hadn’t expected Wu Xiulian to ask her to meet, but she wasn’t surprised either. What could they possibly talk about, besides Zhou Tianzui and You Ruxu? She walked ahead, Wu Xiulian following her, and entered a small private room, a room for eight, the staff member, seeing only the two of them, smiling, “Would you two prefer a table in the main dining area?”

Wu Xiulian said, “No, thank you.”

The staff member, sensing they had something private to discuss, tactfully left.

The door closed. Wu Xiulian called out, “Sister.”

“Just say what you want to say.” Yu Qiao said, “I don’t deserve such respect.”

Wu Xiulian said, “You always deserve my respect.”

    Yu Qiao looked at her.

She had a strong impression of Wu Xiulian, You Ruxu’s aunt, her privileged background, her respectable job, someone Yu Qiao usually wouldn’t interact with, and didn’t want to now, “Did You Ruxu ask you to come?”

“Xu Xu doesn’t know I’m here.” Her tone was respectful, a respect that made Yu Qiao uncomfortable, a deference tinged with apology. Yu Qiao said, “Then she didn’t tell you that Xiao Tian broke up with her?”

    Wu Xiulian paused.

She really didn’t know, but thinking of You Ruxu’s recent state, she nodded: “I guessed.”

“Then what are you doing here? Playing mediator?” Yu Qiao said, “We’re not exactly close, are we?”

Wu Xiulian said, “I’m not here to mediate, I’m here to apologize.”

    Yu Qiao looked at her.

Wu Xiulian said, “My sister had a daughter, named You Ruxu, who died when she was very young. Later, they adopted a child, Xu Xu, they didn’t even change her name, my sister wanted her to live as You Ruxu, to become the daughter she had lost. Xu Xu was very obedient, she knew she was just a replacement, but she was happy. I asked her once, ‘Xu Xu, are you upset?’ And she said, ‘Aunt, I’m not upset at all, I have a family now, I’m happy.’”

“She’s always been like that, always so careful, so cautious, at our home.”

    Yu Qiao’s lips trembled slightly.

Wu Xiulian continued, “Xu Xu’s life with her mother wasn’t easy, her father gambled, drank, abused them, they were always hurt, her world was filled with pain. It’s not that she couldn’t differentiate right from wrong, she was just too young, she didn’t intentionally accuse Reporter Zhou…”

Yu Qiao interrupted, “What are you trying to say?”

Yu Qiao asked, “Trying to gain my sympathy? I don’t care about her past, I don’t want to know what she suffered. I agreed to the anonymous interview, that’s already more than enough. I don’t mind telling the whole world who she is.”

Wu Xiulian said, “Of course you could, you have every right to, but I know, the reason you didn’t, is because you pity her.” Wu Xiulian looked at Yu Qiao, “You might sound heartless, but you didn’t do it, you saw how hard she worked as a reporter, risking her life, she’s been trying to atone all these years…”

“I said, I don’t care!” Yu Qiao’s voice rose slightly, her face grim, her tone cold. Wu Xiulian said, “Then do you care about that work journal?”

Yu Qiao looked at her sharply: “What do you mean?”

Wu Xiulian said, “She came to Jindu when she was in seventh grade, she went to the apartment where she and her mother used to live, she also went to that man’s apartment.” The third person who fell from the rooftop, You Ruxu hadn’t known back then that he was the one who assaulted her mother. They lived in the same complex, a dilapidated building. After the incident, the owner left the country, and the apartment remained empty, no one dared to live there. Later, it was marked for demolition, so no one went there anymore. It was in that man’s apartment that You Ruxu found the notebook, tucked inside a book. She didn’t know if Zhou Qiming had lost it while investigating there, if someone had mistaken it for the man’s notebook, or something else, but after finding the notebook, she learned the truth.

“Xu Xu had a high fever when she came back, she sent the notebook to a reporter.” Wu Xiulian finished, and Yu Qiao stared at her, “Sent it to a reporter?”

Wu Xiulian said, “I intercepted it, behind her back.”

You Ruxu never knew, thinking the notebook was lost at the TV station, misplaced among all the other packages. So, she had contacted that reporter, repeatedly explaining that it was a notebook, a work journal. Yu Qiao, looking at Wu Xiulian, was speechless.

“What did you say?” Yu Qiao’s eyes were red, her gaze towards Wu Xiulian filled with fury.

Wu Xiulian said, “I said, it was me…”

“Why did you do that?” Yu Qiao said, “Why did you hide it?!”

Wu Xiulian, facing her accusations, looked guilty, “My sister had just lost her daughter a few years before, I didn’t want her to lose another child, I was afraid Xu Xu couldn’t handle it…”

“Yes, you were all afraid she couldn’t handle it, what about us?” Yu Qiao said, “We could just die, and it wouldn’t matter?”

Wu Xiulian said, “I asked someone to check on you afterwards, they said you had moved, it had been so many years, I…”

Yu Qiao raised her hand and slapped Wu Xiulian hard across the face.

Wu Xiulian looked up at her.

Yu Qiao’s eyes were filled with hatred, “The past? Who said anything about the past? You did? I knew it, how could You Ruxu do such a thing? The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree!”

    “Xu Xu didn’t know.”

“I don’t care if she knew or not!” Yu Qiao roared, “How dare you even show your face in front of me?!”

Wu Xiulian said, “I know you hate me, you can hate me, but Xu Xu really didn’t know, she kept looking for that notebook, for years.”

“Looking for years?” Yu Qiao’s anger turned into laughter, tears streaming down her face, “Looking for years, so she could get into Xiao Tian’s bed? She felt guilty, so she had to make Xiao Tian suffer again? She knew who I was, yet she still shamelessly enjoyed my care for three years, right in front of me?!” Yu Qiao’s voice rose, “Do you know what I thought when I found out who she was? I wanted to die! What have I been doing all these years? What have I allowed Xiao Tian to do? Your family is respectable, untouchable, and what about us? We just deserve to be wronged? To be ridiculed and judged? To live in shame?”

Wu Xiulian said, “I didn’t think that.”

“You didn’t think that, but that’s exactly what you did!” Yu Qiao glared at her, “It’s one thing to be incompetent, but to be so shameless!”

She turned to leave. Wu Xiulian instinctively reached out to stop her. Yu Qiao pushed her hand away, sending Wu Xiulian stumbling against the door. Her eyes filled with hatred and disgust, “We can’t afford to be associated with your family! And tell You Ruxu, to show some respect!”

Yu Qiao stormed out of the restaurant.

    Without even touching her food.

As she passed by the milk tea shop, Song Chenyue saw her walk past, she was about to say something when Yao Zhao asked Zhou Tianzui, “Dr. Zhou, have you gone back to work?”

Zhou Tianzui said, “Not yet, I’ll be going back after the New Year.”

You Ruxu, sitting beside her, picked at her food, her appetite gone.

Zhou Tianzui, however, seemed to be enjoying her meal, finishing her noodles, drinking her milk tea, casually asking Yao Zhao about school, about her life, her demeanor calm and relaxed. You Ruxu, holding her chopsticks, took a few hesitant bites. Yao Zhao, noticing she hadn’t eaten much, asked, “Sister, is it not to your liking? Should I order you something else?”

You Ruxu said, “No, thank you, this is fine.”

Zhou Tianzui also looked over, her expression unreadable.

You Ruxu’s grip on her chopsticks tightened.

She just, couldn’t be as calm and composed as Zhou Tianzui, those words, let’s break up, echoing in her ears like a curse, those words, you’re not more important than my mother, you don’t like me that much, and I don’t love you that much either, how could she say them so casually? Didn’t she know how much You Ruxu loved her? You Ruxu’s eyes burned, she looked down, listening to Zhou Tianzui tell a joke, Song Chenyue and Yao Zhao laughing, while her own throat tightened, her vision blurring.

“I’m going to the restroom.” Zhou Tianzui said with a smile, “You guys eat first.”

Yao Zhao nodded, taking a sip of her milk tea.

After Zhou Tianzui left, she said to Song Chenyue, “Dr. Zhou is so funny, I used to be so scared of her…”

The voices seemed to fade in and out. You Ruxu lowered her head, her eyes watering. She grabbed a tissue, not wanting to lose her composure, and stood up, “I’ll also go to the restroom.”

    Yao Zhao paused, “Oh, okay.”

She scratched her head, watching You Ruxu leave, and said, “Is Sister not feeling well today?”

Song Chenyue said, “Seems like it.”

You Ruxu couldn’t hear their whispers. She walked quickly, wanting to be alone, not wanting to go to the restroom, not wanting to see Zhou Tianzui, not wanting to see that unfamiliar coldness in her eyes, she felt scared. Someone walked towards her, and You Ruxu turned to avoid them, then realizing where she was, she was standing in front of the restroom.

She heard the sound of someone retching.

Zhou Tianzui was throwing up, everything she had just eaten, along with the harsh words and suppressed emotions. She leaned weakly against the toilet, her hands supporting her weight, her eyes closed. She flushed the toilet.

Her stomach empty, her body also felt empty. She went to wash her face, looking at her reflection in the mirror, and forced a smile.

Her reflection blurred into You Ruxu’s image.

    Looking at her with surprise.

    Looking at her with disbelief.

She had been so vulnerable, and what she had received wasn’t a comforting embrace, but a breakup. Zhou Tianzui’s hands paused as she washed her face, the cold water flowing through her fingers, a chilling sensation. She looked down, then suddenly chuckled softly.

After a few seconds, she turned off the faucet, turned around, opened the door, and You Ruxu was standing outside.

    Chapter 116: Break Up

You Ruxu couldn’t reach Zhou Tianzui. Or rather, Zhou Tianzui was avoiding her, not replying to her messages, not answering her calls. Her intentions were clear. You Ruxu, clinging to a last shred of hope, kept calling and messaging, swallowing her pride, just wanting to hear Zhou Tianzui’s voice, but Zhou Tianzui wasn’t giving her the chance.

It wasn’t that there was no news about Zhou Tianzui.

Her news was everywhere, interviews with various media outlets, she seemed fine, at least on camera, she was fine. The truth about Zhou Qiming’s case was out. After the police released the verification report on the work journal, and the anonymous interview aired, the sympathy and support for Zhou Tianzui and Yu Qiao intensified, there were even suggestions to set up a donation account, which Zhou Tianzui declined.

You Ruxu looked at Zhou Tianzui on the screen, her expression calm.

She had been resting at home for almost ten days, her leg almost fully recovered. Wu Xiulian hadn’t returned to Yuhai, staying in Jindu to take care of her. You Ruxu urged her to go back, but Wu Xiulian always said she would wait a little longer.

    New Year’s was almost here.

And Wu Xiulian still hadn’t left.

On New Year’s Eve morning, Wu Xiulian said she was going out. She had been cooped up in the apartment taking care of You Ruxu for days, barely leaving except to buy groceries. You Ruxu asked where she was going, and Wu Xiulian replied, “A colleague is here on a business trip, I’m meeting her for lunch.”

You Ruxu said, “I’ll go with you.”

“You stay home and rest, aren’t you having lunch with Yao Zhao?”

You Ruxu said, “Call me if you need anything.”

    Wu Xiulian said, “Okay.”

You Ruxu watched her leave, then opened her phone. Many messages and missed calls, but none from the person she longed for. There was news about Zhou Tianzui, in the news feed, on the other side of the screen, a world away.

You Ruxu saw Chen Xiang’s New Year greetings and replied. Chen Xiang immediately sent back an emoji, “Teacher You, have you gone back to Yuhai?”

    You Ruxu replied, “Not yet.”

After that interview, she had told Shi Qi about her resignation. Shi Qi had given her an extended leave, telling her to think it over carefully. You Ruxu had been staying in her apartment, her heart leaping at every noise outside, rushing to the door.

    A neighbor.

    Or a passerby.

She sat on the sofa and saw Chen Xiang’s message: [My phone’s been ringing non-stop, Teacher You, have they been calling you too?]

It was probably about interviewing the person involved in the Zhou Qiming case.

Chen Xiang had refused them all, figuring You Ruxu was probably facing the same situation.

You Ruxu’s situation was worse, her phone hadn’t stopped ringing since the interview aired, various media outlets, even some from Yuhai, asking for the interviewee’s consent for an anonymous interview.

Besides the media, there were also those trying to dig up information, all sorts of speculations online about the interviewee’s identity, everyone trying to find clues, to expose her. After two days of this frenzy, Zhou Tianzui gave an interview, asking them to leave the person alone, asking how their current actions were any different from the ones that had caused so much harm all those years ago.

Netizens praised her generosity, but some were also critical, accusing her of being self-righteous, of playing the victim, now making them look bad, how ironic, she deserved to be condemned back then.

Malice could arise so suddenly, like a hidden bomb, its trigger unknown. Of course, those malicious comments were quickly countered by others, some even fiercely defending her.

The New Year in Jindu, a turbulent mix of emotions.

You Ruxu just put down her phone when it buzzed with a notification. She looked; it was Yao Zhao, telling her she had left the house. You Ruxu replied, then went to her room to change. She put on a red down jacket, light blue pants, and a hat from her closet, thinking of Zhou Tianzui.

Zhou Tianzui also had a similar hat, the one her mother bought in Yuhai.

You Ruxu put on the hat, tucked her hair behind her ears, revealing her delicate profile. It was still early when she arrived at the restaurant, a habit from her years as a reporter. She was always early. She hadn’t expected Yao Zhao to be there already, discussing the Fengyuan incident with a friend.

“I can’t believe that Zhou Yun is such a bad person.” Song Chenyue said, “I saw his interview before, and I thought he was a good person, so pitiful, his leg broken by his own brother.”

Yao Zhao said, “You can’t judge a book by its cover.”

You Ruxu stood behind them, Song Chenyue turned around, hearing her footsteps, and immediately stood up, “Reporter, you’re here.”

Yao Zhao turned around and smiled, looking at You Ruxu.

    You Ruxu met her gaze.

Yao Zhao had changed a lot, no longer timid and withdrawn, but confident and composed. She had heard that social services had arranged accommodation for her, she was staying at the school dormitory now, her stepfather had come looking for her a few times, but they had been turned away. It had only been a while, but she seemed taller now, her hair tied back in a ponytail, a youthful vibrancy about her, a completely different person from the girl she first met.

She smiled and called out, “Sister.”

She had a part-time job helping out at a small shop, earning a little extra money. She had wanted to treat You Ruxu to dinner during the New Year holidays and had suggested several places. In the end, You Ruxu chose a noodle restaurant near the school.

She asked Yao Zhao, “Have you finished your homework?”

    Before Yao Zhao could answer,

Song Chenyue said, “Sister, you have no idea, she’s a study machine now, finished all her homework ages ago, even started previewing next semester’s material! She jumped over a hundred places in the last exam, the teachers were shocked!”

You Ruxu said, “Really? That impressive?”

    Yao Zhao blushed, slightly embarrassed.

You Ruxu smiled and handed her a gift, “A reward for you.”

    Yao Zhao said, “I can’t…”

You Ruxu said, “It’s a New Year’s gift.”

She looked at Song Chenyue: “I have one for you too.”

Song Chenyue immediately squealed with delight, “Sister, you’re the best!”

Yao Zhao, filled with gratitude, said to You Ruxu, “Thank you, Sister.”

You Ruxu sat opposite them, “What are we having?”

Yao Zhao said, “We have to wait a little longer.”

She smiled, “Dr. Zhou is also coming.”

You Ruxu froze, looking up slightly, “She’s coming too?”

Yao Zhao said, “Yes, she said she’s off today, so I invited her.”

You Ruxu’s expression faltered, a strained smile appearing on her face, when a figure appeared at the door, Zhou Tianzui, wearing a down jacket, saw You Ruxu from afar, her expression unchanged, as she walked quickly towards them, bringing with her a gust of cold air.

Yao Zhao immediately stood up to greet her, “Sit here, next to Sister.”

    A four-person table.

    Her and Song Chenyue.

    You Ruxu and Zhou Tianzui.

You Ruxu glanced at Zhou Tianzui, who looked thinner, her features more defined, her expression calm. She said to Yao Zhao, “I heard you did well on your exams, that’s great.”

Yao Zhao blushed, “Sister already congratulated me.”

A girlish shyness, something she rarely displayed before. She was gradually becoming like other teenagers, happy and carefree. Zhou Tianzui looked at You Ruxu, “You’re early.”

You Ruxu said, “I had nothing to do at home.”

    Zhou Tianzui nodded.

You Ruxu asked, “When were you discharged?”

Zhou Tianzui said, “The day before yesterday.”

    You Ruxu was silent.

Yao Zhao and Song Chenyue looked at them, “Sister, what are we eating?”

Zhou Tianzui said, “Anything is fine.”

    You Ruxu said, “Same here.”

Yao Zhao said, “Then let’s have four bowls of pork rib noodles.” She called out to the owner, who acknowledged her order. Zhou Tianzui said, “One without scallions.”

You Ruxu’s grip on the disposable chopsticks tightened, her knuckles white.

Yao Zhao, oblivious to the subtle tension, asked, “Dr. Zhou, are you feeling better now? I wanted to visit you last time, but Auntie said you were resting.”

You Ruxu had also gone to visit a few times, but Yu Qiao had refused to see her.

    Let alone Zhou Tianzui.

Zhou Tianzui said, “You need to rest when you’re sick.”

Yao Zhao said, “Are you better now?”

Zhou Tianzui smiled, “Would I be out here if I wasn’t?”

Yao Zhao scratched her head, “That’s true.”

She smiled sheepishly. She had visited You Ruxu and Zhou Tianzui during the winter break, You Ruxu had already been discharged, saying she was resting at home. She hadn’t dared to disturb them, and now, seeing they were both fine, she was relieved.

She sincerely hoped they were both healthy and well, even willing to trade her own health for theirs.

Song Chenyue, seeing her goofy smile, shook her head. Noticing a milk tea shop outside, she said, “Sister, do you want some milk tea?”

You Ruxu looked at her, at the hopeful look in her eyes, and nodded, “Okay.”

Song Chenyue beamed, “Yao Zhao, let’s go buy some milk tea.”

Yao Zhao asked You Ruxu and Zhou Tianzui for their preferences and then left with Song Chenyue.

Only the two of them remained at the table. The owner brought their noodles, Zhou Tianzui placing the bowl without scallions in front of You Ruxu, who said, “Thank you.”

    Zhou Tianzui said, “You’re welcome.”

An awkward distance between them, a growing chasm. You Ruxu looked down at her noodles, Zhou Tianzui, beside her, using her chopsticks to stir the soup, the rising steam obscuring her face.

You Ruxu said, “I sent you a message, did you receive it?”

    Zhou Tianzui said, “I did.”

You Ruxu’s heart ached, a bittersweet feeling, her eyes burning. She looked down at her noodles, their surface now also covered in a thin layer of condensation, “I also called you.”

    Zhou Tianzui said, “I know.”

    You Ruxu said, “Then why…”

Zhou Tianzui took a bite of her noodles, casually interrupting You Ruxu, “Let’s break up.”

You Ruxu turned, looking at her calm profile, her eyes wide.

Zhou Tianzui, chewing slowly, still not looking at You Ruxu, her lips parting slightly, “My mom knows.”

You Ruxu’s throat tightened, “I can talk to Auntie…”

Zhou Tianzui said, “You’re not more important than my mom.”

So, I’m breaking up with you.

A taut string snapped, and You Ruxu felt as if she couldn’t hear anything, her ears ringing for a few seconds before returning to normal. She stared at Zhou Tianzui, unable to look away.

Through the steam rising from the bowl.

Zhou Tianzui’s voice, distant and cold, “I thought you already understood.”

You Ruxu said, “I don’t understand.”

Zhou Tianzui chuckled softly, a familiar sound that made You Ruxu’s eyes burn. She looked at Zhou Tianzui, hearing her say, “What’s there to understand? You approached me with ulterior motives, I accepted you with selfish intentions.”

“You don’t like me that much.” Zhou Tianzui said, “And I don’t love you that much either.”

She looked at You Ruxu, “Let’s break up.”

    Chapter 115: The Moon

Yu Qiao delivered this slap with full force. The mark on Zhou Tianzui’s face was instantly visible. She turned her head away, silent. Yu Qiao said, “You can care about her mother? Then why don’t you care about your own mother?”

Zhou Tianzui turned slightly and said, “We can’t just think about ourselves.”

“Xiao Tian?” Yu Qiao’s voice was sharp, a mixture of disbelief and anger, “Have you gone crazy?”

Zhou Tianzui looked at Yu Qiao. Ever since confessing her feelings for You Ruxu, she had been thinking about when and how to tell Yu Qiao, afraid that You Ruxu, unable to bear the guilt, would confess first.

And she herself also felt the same.

Every time she saw Yu Qiao, the guilt intensified, threatening to drown her. Now, having finally confessed, she felt a sense of relief, “Mom, I’m not crazy, I know she wronged us, but that was a long time ago, she was just a child back then, you can’t blame her for everything.”

Yu Qiao took a step back, “Then who should I blame?”

Her years of hatred, could they be dismissed so easily by Zhou Tianzui’s words, you can’t blame her for everything?

Zhou Tianzui said, “If you really want to blame someone, blame those who blindly condemned us without knowing the truth.”

“If it wasn’t for Shi Ran, would they have condemned us?” Yu Qiao said, “If it wasn’t for her accusation, would your father have been labeled a rapist? If it wasn’t for her, would we have had to live in hiding, in the shadows?”

Zhou Tianzui said, “She made a mistake, but she hasn’t had an easy life either.”

“A hard life?” Yu Qiao scoffed, “Her father works at the court, her mother is a university professor, she changed her identity and became someone important, how is that a hard life?”

Zhou Tianzui said, “Then do you know why she became a reporter? Out of guilt, she wants to atone, she’s been trying all these years…”

“Trying what?” Yu Qiao interrupted her. “To get into your bed?”

“Is that also a form of atonement?”

“She turned you into a homosexual, she made you the target of ridicule and judgment, and that’s atonement?”

Zhou Tianzui tried to sit up, a sharp pain shooting through her wound, her forehead covered in sweat. She said to Yu Qiao, “She didn’t ‘turn’ me into anything, I already was.”

“Already was?!” Yu Qiao said, “If it wasn’t for her, would you have liked women?”

    Zhou Tianzui was speechless.

Yu Qiao’s face was grim, “It wasn’t enough for her to ruin our family once, she has to do it again, it wasn’t enough for her to destroy your father’s life, now she wants to destroy yours!”

Zhou Tianzui tried to reach for Yu Qiao, “Mom, please calm down!”

“I am calm!” Yu Qiao said, “I’ve never been calmer.” Her voice was cold and distant, “From now on, you have nothing to do with You Ruxu, you are you, she is she, I’m transferring you to another hospital.”

She turned and walked away, ignoring Zhou Tianzui’s calls. Zhou Tianzui tried to get up, but the pain was too much, she collapsed back onto the bed, angrily knocking over the thermos on the bedside table. Yu Qiao, hearing the crash, paused at the door, then continued walking.

Zhou Tianzui’s eyes were red with anger.

    She called You Ruxu.

    You Ruxu’s phone was off.

She had been interviewing for over two hours. Chen Xiang had repeatedly suggested she take a break, but You Ruxu insisted, “I’m fine.”

Chen Xiang looked at her, so many thoughts and emotions swirling within her, yet unable to express them. She had always seen You Ruxu as someone blessed, someone who had everything, never imagining her past could be so dark.

Perhaps because she had worked with You Ruxu for so long, a lingering affection, that even knowing the truth, she couldn’t bring herself to judge or condemn her.

You Ruxu sat up straight, “Just two more questions, and we’re done, right?”

    Chen Xiang said, “Yes.”

You Ruxu said, “Do you have any questions for me?”

Chen Xiang said, “I don’t know, Teacher You, there’s so much I want to say, but I don’t know where to begin.” Her perception of You Ruxu shattered, she was still in a daze, “You know, I never truly understood our profession before.”

But the incident with You Ruxu, with Zhou Qiming, made her realize what it meant to be a reporter.

    The weight of their responsibility.

If there had been fewer sensationalized reports, fewer biased media outlets back then, perhaps Dr. Zhou and her mother wouldn’t have suffered so much. Was it right to place all the blame on You Ruxu?

She thought, even if it wasn’t You Ruxu, even if it were someone else, they shouldn’t have to bear the brunt of it all.

But You Ruxu, she was undeniably wrong.

Whether intentional or unintentional, through her misinformation, she had ruined someone’s life.

At this moment, Chen Xiang truly understood the burden she carried.

    You Ruxu said, “Let’s continue.”

Chen Xiang nodded and sat opposite her.

The interview ended at noon. Chen Xiang wanted to treat You Ruxu to lunch, but You Ruxu declined, “Could you take me to the hospital?”

    Chen Xiang said, “Sure.”

She asked, “Are you going to see Dr. Zhou?”

    You Ruxu nodded, “Yes.”

Chen Xiang said, “Did she, say anything?”

    You Ruxu said, “No.”

Chen Xiang said, “She’s so kind.”

Anyone else, they wouldn’t be so understanding. You Ruxu’s eyes reddened slightly, she turned to look out the window, the scenery blurring as they drove. They soon arrived at the hospital. Chen Xiang wanted to help her inside, but You Ruxu said, “You go back, you still have work to do.”

Chen Xiang said, “Okay then, I’ll be going now, call me if you need anything.”

    You Ruxu nodded faintly.

After Chen Xiang left, You Ruxu went inside and took the elevator, reaching the VIP ward. The head nurse came out, “Good afternoon, Reporter You.”

You Ruxu nodded and smiled at her, “How is Dr. Zhou doing today?”

“Dr. Zhou?” The head nurse said, “She was just transferred, her mother requested it.”

    You Ruxu froze, “Transferred?”

The head nurse said, “Yes, she’s quite famous now, her mother didn’t want her to be disturbed, so she requested a transfer.”

You Ruxu gripped the armrests of her wheelchair, “Transferred where?”

The head nurse said, “To the City Hospital.”

    You Ruxu said, “Thank you.”

The head nurse smiled, “You’re welcome.”

You Ruxu returned to the now empty and quiet ward. Zhou Tianzui was gone, her bed also taken away. Only You Ruxu’s bed remained, all traces of Zhou Tianzui erased, the air thin and cold. She sat in her wheelchair, looking at the empty space.

That was where Zhou Tianzui’s bed was last night.

    Where they lay together.

Where they held each other as they slept.

    Where she held Zhou Tianzui.

It had been so warm. She missed Zhou Tianzui.

    Missed her terribly.

You Ruxu took out her phone, wanting to call Zhou Tianzui, seeing Yu Qiao’s name in her contacts, it felt like a needle pricking her finger, she couldn’t bring herself to press the call button. Her hand trembling, the screen went dark. She wheeled herself to the bed, the cold sheets, the cold emptiness of the room.

She leaned against the bed, the coldness seeping into her bones, like a patient struggling to breathe, only finding relief in Zhou Tianzui’s presence.

You Ruxu, unable to resist any longer, called Zhou Tianzui.

The ringing echoed, her heart pounding with each ring.

Zhou Tianzui, hearing her phone ring, reached for it, but Yu Qiao snatched it first. Zhou Tianzui looked at her mother.

Yu Qiao said, “You haven’t listened to a single word I said.”

She handed the phone to Zhou Tianzui, “Answer it.”

Zhou Tianzui’s phone vibrated in her hand. She looked at Yu Qiao.

Yu Qiao said, “Many reporters contacted me recently, wanting to interview me. What do you think will happen if I tell them that You Ruxu is Shi Ran?”

Zhou Tianzui gripped the phone tightly: “Mom, you know we don’t care.”

“It’s you two who don’t care,” Yu Qiao said, “What about You Ruxu’s adoptive parents? Do they not care? Can they handle it? How much are they willing to endure for her? What if they can’t, will they disown her?”

Zhou Tianzui thought of You Shu, of Wu Xiulian, of You Ruxu wanting a home, a warm and loving home, so desperately that she was willing to play the role of a deceased child.

    If she was abandoned again.

She closed her eyes and said, “They won’t disown her.”

“Even better.” Yu Qiao said, “Let them suffer what we suffered, Xiao Tian, didn’t you tell me to let go of the past? Then go tell them to let go, see if they can, after something like this.”

Zhou Tianzui said, “It’s different now, she didn’t know back then…”

Yu Qiao said, “Whether she knew or not, she’s still guilty, she committed a crime. Do you want her to continue being a criminal, to carry this guilt for the rest of her life? You two might not care, but if something happens to her adoptive parents because of her, can she live with herself? Can you?”

    The phone stopped vibrating.

Zhou Tianzui looked at Yu Qiao.

Yu Qiao said, “Cut all ties with her, from now on, you are you, she is she. Your father’s name has been cleared, I can let go of the past, but from now on, you have nothing to do with her.”

Zhou Tianzui felt exhausted, her face ashen.

The screen of her phone, dark and unresponsive, reflected her pale features. Her voice was filled with anguish, “What if I can’t?”

Yu Qiao said, “Then I’ll do the interview.”

Zhou Tianzui’s fingers twitched, dropping the phone onto the blanket. Her eyes were red and burning, tears threatening to spill. Yu Qiao continued, “I also heard that, her father has been released from prison, he’s been looking for her…”

    “Mom.”

    Yu Qiao said, “I don’t mind…”

    “Don’t.”

Yu Qiao said, “Telling him who Shi Ran is.”

    Zhou Tianzui said, “Stop it!”

She looked at Yu Qiao, then thinking of You Ruxu, how she always became tense and withdrawn whenever she talked about her childhood, about her mother being abused by her father, about that man, she couldn’t control her own emotions.

    She was still so afraid.

    Her phone rang again.

The vibration against the blanket. Zhou Tianzui looked down at the flashing name on the screen, her finger hovering over the answer button. Yu Qiao watched her, her gaze cold and silent. Zhou Tianzui slowly curled her fingers, her hand closing around the phone, not answering.

She turned to look out the window, her pale face gradually regaining its composure, the insistent ringing echoing in the quiet room, Zhou Tianzui closed her eyes and turned off the phone.

How could she bear to watch the moon she held so precious fall and be tarnished by the world?

    Chapter 114: It’s Not

Wu Xiulian, seeing You Ruxu, froze. She rushed over, her eyes wide with surprise, “Xu Xu, you…”

You Ruxu said, “Aunt, let’s go home.”

She stopped Wu Xiulian from going back inside with a look, holding her hand, knowing she wanted to explain to Yu Qiao, but Wu Xiulian had done this for her, for her…

Wu Xiulian paused for a moment, then quickly helped You Ruxu take off her soiled jacket, covering her with her own. You Ruxu’s hair was a mess, her face stained with food, yet her expression was calm, as if nothing had happened, “Auntie has every right to be angry.”

Wu Xiulian only noticed the cut on You Ruxu’s hand after cleaning her up.

    She looked at You Ruxu.

You Ruxu pulled back her hand slightly, “It was an accident.”

“Xu Xu.” Wu Xiulian’s voice choked with tears. “I’m so sorry!”

You Ruxu said, “It’s not your fault, Aunt.” She said, “Let’s go home, Chen Xiang is waiting for me.”

Wu Xiulian’s eyes were filled with tears. She nodded and helped You Ruxu into the car.

It had been a long time since You Ruxu had been home. During her stay at the hospital, she missed the apartment she shared with Zhou Tianzui. Wu Xiulian stood in the living room, looking around, the apartment clean and tidy. You Ruxu went to change. Wu Xiulian, holding the first-aid kit, cleaned and bandaged You Ruxu’s wound when she came out. You Ruxu seemed numb, her expression blank and impassive.

Wu Xiulian looked at her, putting the first-aid kit aside after she finished, and called out, “Xu Xu…”

“Aunt,” You Ruxu said, “Zhou Tianzui and I will work things out.”

    This child…

    Wu Xiulian looked down.

You Ruxu said, “Should we go to the TV station?”

Wu Xiulian drove her there. Chen Xiang, seeing them, was surprised, “Teacher You, what happened to your hand?”

“It’s nothing, just a small accident. Have you prepared everything?” You Ruxu looked at Chen Xiang, a faint smile on her pale face, like a white rose blooming in the winter wind, delicate yet resilient, a quiet strength beneath the fragile exterior.

Chen Xiang couldn’t help but stare.

She thought You Ruxu was truly blessed, beautiful, with a captivating voice, even looking stunning when sick, it was unfair! And most importantly, her work ethic, clear and pure, her talent undeniable, truly deserving of the nickname, You Jiaoyue (You Bright Moon).

You Ruxu looked at her, “Chen Xiang?”

Chen Xiang returned to her senses, “Yes?”

    She smiled, “Then let’s go.”

The other colleagues were curious, but knowing the rules of an anonymous interview, they suppressed their curiosity, watching as Chen Xiang wheeled You Ruxu out. On the way, Chen Xiang said, “Teacher You, is there anything wrong with the interview script?”

You Ruxu took the script, having read it once before. Chen Xiang had made some minor adjustments last night, “Why did you change this part?”

“I thought the question was too harsh.” Chen Xiang said, “I tried to put myself in her shoes. The interviewee was only four or five years old back then, her mother had just died, it was a traumatic experience, if she wasn’t thinking clearly and said something, it’s understandable. And the blame shouldn’t be entirely on her, even the police didn’t convict anyone, it was just the public outcry…”

Partly because of the media’s sensationalized reporting, exaggerating the story, combined with the irrational public, that had blown the incident out of proportion.

You Ruxu said, “Wrong is wrong, being young isn’t an excuse.”

It was precisely because of the lack of evidence that they couldn’t press charges back then, her words becoming the final straw, her “accusation” the only “evidence” during the height of the scandal.

Although her statement wasn’t officially used by the police, the damage was done.

    Chen Xiang said, “But…”

“Change it back.” You Ruxu said, “And this part too.”

    Chen Xiang said, “Okay.”

You Ruxu looked down at the script, then as they reached the interview location, she said, “Let’s change the location.”

Chen Xiang was surprised, “To where?”

You Ruxu said, “To my apartment.”

Chen Xiang thought for a moment, “Is it because the interviewee doesn’t want to come here?”

You Ruxu said, “Something like that.”

“Okay.” Chen Xiang said, “As long as the interview happens, I don’t mind.”

After all, the news was already out, if the interviewee backed out now, she would be in trouble, so even changing the location ten times wouldn’t be a problem.

Chen Xiang turned the car around and drove towards You Ruxu’s apartment. On the way, she asked, “Teacher You, what does this interviewee do?”

You Ruxu looked out the window, “A reporter.”

“A reporter?” Chen Xiang paused, “A colleague? Still working in Jindu?”

    You Ruxu said, “Yes.”

Chen Xiang’s surprise was evident. Her curiosity about this interviewee intensified. When they arrived, You Ruxu held her bag, and Chen Xiang said, “Let me carry that…”

You Ruxu said, “It’s okay, it’s not heavy.”

“But your hand and leg are injured.” Chen Xiang said, “I don’t want you to overexert yourself!”

You Ruxu smiled faintly. Chen Xiang carried the bags and followed You Ruxu into the elevator, “Why is she at your apartment? Teacher You, did you two know each other before?”

You Ruxu said, “You’ll find out soon.”

Chen Xiang couldn’t contain her curiosity, “Is it someone, I also know?”

You Ruxu looked down, not answering.

Chen Xiang swallowed, her heart pounding, she felt like she was on the verge of discovering the truth, just waiting for the door to open.

    The door opened.

    No one was inside.

Chen Xiang looked around, puzzled, “Teacher You, where is she?”

You Ruxu looked at her and said, “She’s right in front of you.”

“Where? Isn’t it just…” Chen Xiang’s voice trailed off, her eyes wide with disbelief as she stared at You Ruxu, speechless.

“Teacher You, why did you come to Jindu?”

“Teacher You, why did you become a reporter?”

You Ruxu just looked at her quietly.

    Chen Xiang stood there, frozen.

She was stunned, having covered countless news stories, but this was definitely the most shocking. After a long moment, she finally managed, “You?”

    You Ruxu nodded, “It’s me.”

Chen Xiang’s mind was in a whirl, a thousand questions, a thousand words, but she didn’t know where to begin. Finally, she asked, “Then, does Dr. Zhou know?”

    You Ruxu pursed her lips.

Zhou Tianzui lay in bed, Yu Qiao hadn’t visited all morning. She frowned and looked at her phone, it was just past ten o’clock. There was a noise at the door, and she looked over, Yu Qiao walked in, carrying a bag.

Yu Qiao’s face was grim as she placed the thermos on the table. Zhou Tianzui asked, “Mom, what’s wrong?”

“Nothing.” Yu Qiao said, “I made you lunch, have you eaten breakfast yet?”

Zhou Tianzui said, “Yes, why didn’t you answer my calls this morning?”

“I left my phone at home, I was out shopping.” Yu Qiao said, “I’ll pour you some chicken soup, let it cool down a bit.”

Zhou Tianzui watched her busy herself around the room.

Yu Qiao seemed to have aged considerably in the past few days. She used to dye her hair whenever she saw a gray strand, not wanting Zhou Tianzui to think she was old, worried about her. Now, her temples were gray.

Zhou Tianzui said, “Mom, don’t bother, just rest for a bit.”

Yu Qiao placed a bowl of soup on the table and sat down on the chair beside her bed. It was a single room converted into a double, the beds separated but without a curtain. Yu Qiao sat between the two beds, looking at Zhou Tianzui.

Zhou Tianzui could move a little now. She tried to sit up slightly, and Yu Qiao adjusted the bed’s height. Zhou Tianzui lay back down. The ward was quiet, neither of them speaking, the silence stretching, until Zhou Tianzui finally said, “Mom, you should lie down on the other bed if you’re tired.”

“I’m not tired.” Yu Qiao asked, “What did your director say?”

The director had visited again this morning. He had initially disapproved of her resignation, and now, with the work journal surfacing, he disapproved even more. The hospital also knew about her father’s case, the commendation and the raise still stood.

Yu Qiao said, “You can’t resign.”

Zhou Tianzui said, “Mom, we’ll talk about this later.”

“Later?” Yu Qiao sat on the edge of her bed, her face grim, “Then what do you want to talk about now?”

    Zhou Tianzui looked at her.

Yu Qiao said, “About Shi Ran?”

    Zhou Tianzui’s expression changed slightly.

Yu Qiao said, “You thought you could hide this from me forever?”

    Zhou Tianzui said, “I didn’t.”

She and You Ruxu had agreed to tell Yu Qiao after the interview, she hadn’t expected Yu Qiao to find out first, “Did she tell you?”

“She came to our apartment this morning.” Yu Qiao said, “Xiao Tian, you did well, you did so well.”

    Zhou Tianzui was speechless.

Yu Qiao said, “Seeing me being so kind to her, all these years, how did it make you feel?”

Yu Qiao continued, “It made me sick to my stomach, Xiao Tian, forgetting about your father, making a fool out of your mother, all for a woman?”

Zhou Tianzui said, “Mom, I didn’t forget about Dad.”

“Didn’t you?” Yu Qiao’s tone was calm, a calmness that was more unsettling than any outburst, “When did you find out, that she was Shi Ran?”

Zhou Tianzui met Yu Qiao’s gaze.

Yu Qiao leaned closer, looking at Zhou Tianzui intently, “Just now? Or when you first met?”

    Zhou Tianzui closed her eyes.

Yu Qiao said, “You knew all along?”

Zhou Tianzui said, “Mom, I did know, but listen to me, it’s been so many years since Dad’s incident, we’re both tired, now that the truth is out, I don’t want to dwell on the past anymore…”

“Is it because you don’t want to dwell on the past, or because she’s You Ruxu, that you don’t want to dwell on it?” Yu Qiao’s voice was cold, her words like needles piercing Zhou Tianzui’s heart, “You don’t want to dwell on it, have you even asked me? Do you even remember what we went through all those years?”

“I remember.” Zhou Tianzui said, “I’ll never forget, I remember what we went through, I know how much you suffered, and yes, it was hell for both of us, but do you think she had it easy? Her pain was no less than ours!”

Yu Qiao said, “She deserved it!”

Zhou Tianzui’s anger flared, “Deserved it? She was only a child back then!”

“Even a child should be held accountable for her actions! She’s the reason your father died without clearing his name!”

Zhou Tianzui’s voice rose slightly, “Dad wasn’t the only one who died!” Her eyes reddened, “Her mother also died!”

    Slap!

Zhou Tianzui’s head snapped to the side, a red mark appearing on her pale cheek.

    Chapter 113: Shi Ran

You Ruxu and Zhou Tianzui fell asleep in each other’s arms. They hadn’t expected to sleep, but they drifted off while chatting. Zhou Tianzui, sensing the stillness beside her, turned and saw You Ruxu sleeping peacefully, she must be exhausted. Even when Zhou Tianzui gently brushed her hair away from her face, she didn’t wake.

Zhou Tianzui carefully adjusted You Ruxu’s position, making her lie flat on her back, then placed You Ruxu’s leg on her own, wanting her to be as comfortable as possible, giving her as much space as she could. When she woke up in the morning, You Ruxu was curled up, occupying only a small portion of the bed, while Zhou Tianzui had moved closer to her.

You Ruxu, hearing the alarm, quickly turned it off and waited quietly for the nurse’s morning rounds. She sat up. Zhou Tianzui also opened her eyes. You Ruxu said, “Go back to sleep, it’s still early.”

Zhou Tianzui asked, “What time is it?”

    You Ruxu said, “6:30.”

Zhou Tianzui asked, “Why are you up so early?”

You Ruxu said, “I have to go to the station.”

Zhou Tianzui was silent, her hand resting on her forehead. Seeing You Ruxu get out of bed, carefully putting weight on one leg, hopping towards the wheelchair, then sitting down, she asked, “When can you remove the cast?”

“After I’m discharged.” You Ruxu said, “Another week.”

Zhou Tianzui watched as she went into the bathroom, her movements still efficient despite being in a wheelchair. You Ruxu helped Zhou Tianzui wash up, ordered them breakfast, and said, “Auntie will be here soon, you can eat together.”

“Okay.” Zhou Tianzui asked, “Aren’t you eating?”

You Ruxu said, “I’ll eat at the station.”

Zhou Tianzui nodded, watching as You Ruxu quickly got ready and called Wu Xiulian to come pick her up. Before leaving the ward, she heard Zhou Tianzui ask, “Coming for lunch?”

You Ruxu said, “Not sure yet, I might be busy, you eat first.”

    Zhou Tianzui said, “Okay.”

You Ruxu left the ward. Wu Xiulian was waiting for her outside. Seeing her, she asked, “Should I take you to the TV station?”

“Aunt,” You Ruxu said, “I want to go somewhere first.”

Wu Xiulian helped her into the car, sitting in the passenger seat. When they neared the cemetery, You Ruxu asked Wu Xiulian to buy her some flowers, which she held in her arms after getting out of the car. Wu Xiulian wheeled her to the tombstone.

You Ruxu said, “This is Reporter Zhou.”

The man in the photo on the tombstone looked young, a gentle smile on his face. Wu Xiulian crouched down and placed the flowers in front of the tombstone. They didn’t speak, the cold wind whipping You Ruxu’s hair around her face. She sat up straight and silently apologized to the tombstone countless times. Then she took out her phone, about to dial a number, when it rang, she looked at the caller ID, it was Yu Qiao.

    You Ruxu paused, “Hello.”

“Are you free?” Yu Qiao asked. “Come over for dinner.”

You Ruxu glanced at the time, “I’m free.”

When they reached Yu Qiao’s apartment complex, Wu Xiulian wanted to go with her, but You Ruxu said, “Aunt, just wait for me here.”

Wu Xiulian, looking at her worriedly, watched as You Ruxu entered the elevator and went upstairs. When You Ruxu arrived, the door to Yu Qiao’s apartment was slightly ajar. She could smell the aroma of food, chicken soup, and a few home-cooked dishes, the timing strange, too late for breakfast, too early for lunch. Yu Qiao, hearing her enter, looked over and said, “I made the soup last night, wanted you and Xiao Tian to have something nourishing, come sit down.”

Her tone was calm and even. You Ruxu’s expression was also calm.

They sat at the dining table. Yu Qiao was wearing the same clothes as yesterday, her hair looking grayer, the wrinkles on her face more pronounced, her complexion sallow, a look of exhaustion. She served You Ruxu a bowl of rice, “When did you and Xiao Tian meet?”

You Ruxu took the bowl, sat opposite her, and said, “When she transferred to the Affiliated Hospital.”

“It’s been a few years, hasn’t it?” Yu Qiao had asked Zhou Tianzui the same question, but she wanted to hear it from You Ruxu, “Do you like her?”

You Ruxu’s throat tightened. She gripped her spoon and nodded: “Yes.”

“What do you like about her?” Yu Qiao said, “Is she easy to talk to? Easy to deceive? Or easy to manipulate?”

    You Ruxu looked up, “Auntie…”

“Do you deserve to call me Auntie?” Yu Qiao looked at You Ruxu, her calm demeanor a mask for the turbulent emotions beneath, her jaw clenched. She had tossed and turned all night, wanting to confront You Ruxu, only managing to calm down this morning, preparing this meal. She said, “You Ruxu, such a beautiful name, but I prefer calling you Shi Ran.”

You Ruxu’s face paled, her heart pierced by those words, the pain rendering her speechless.

Yu Qiao continued, “Shi Ran, is that you?”

    You Ruxu said, “Yes.”

Yu Qiao took a deep breath, “You had the journal all along?”

    You Ruxu was silent.

Yu Qiao said, “Should I thank you? Thank you for finally bringing it out, for clearing Zhou Qiming’s name?”

    You Ruxu said, “Auntie…”

“Shut up!” Yu Qiao yelled, then seeing You Ruxu’s reaction, calmed herself down, “Xiao Tian is foolish, I don’t know what you said to her, but she still wants to be with you?” Yu Qiao looked up slightly, her eyes red, “She truly is her father’s daughter.”

Yu Qiao gritted her teeth, “She’s so filial!”

You Ruxu said, “Auntie, don’t blame her.”

“Blame her?” Yu Qiao said, “Of course I won’t blame her, she’s my daughter, if she makes a mistake, I’ll correct her. What about you? I heard you have adoptive parents? What? Didn’t they teach you how to be a decent human being?”

    You Ruxu’s expression froze.

Yu Qiao continued, “How could you do this, after all these years, having a mother who gave birth to you, but not a mother who raised you?”

You Ruxu’s face paled. The spoon slipped from her hand and clattered onto the table. Yu Qiao said, “This meal, it’s for you.”

“You have a respectable job, a good family, if you hadn’t come forward, no one would have known it was you. This meal, it’s to thank you, to thank you on behalf of Zhou Qiming.” Yu Qiao said, “I should have realized it sooner.”

    She had been foolish.

She should have known, seeing You Ruxu standing alone before Zhou Qiming’s grave, seeing Zhou Tianzui’s reluctance to talk about her relationship in front of his tombstone, she should have known, the connection between You Ruxu and her family.

Yu Qiao asked, “Shi Ran, don’t you feel any guilt? Being with Zhou Tianzui, how could you live with yourself? Haven’t you harmed her enough? Do you want to ruin her entire life?”

You Ruxu’s voice was soft: “Auntie, I didn’t want to harm her.”

“It’s not about what you want.” Yu Qiao said, “She finally moved on from her father’s incident, and now, being with you, if people find out, if her colleagues find out, how can she face them? She’s already been ridiculed and judged, for so many years, just let her go!”

    You Ruxu said, “We’re together…”

“You’re not together!” Yu Qiao’s voice rose sharply, interrupting her, “You’re not, you were never together, you’re just friends, ordinary friends!”

You Ruxu’s words were caught in her throat.

Yu Qiao stood up: “Do you know how much I’ve hated you all these years? I wanted to die just seeing you!” Her body trembled, her hands gripping the edge of the table tightly, supporting her weight, “Yet, despite hating you so much, I still cooked for you, bought you things, cared for you, these past few years, Shi Ran, have you ever met anyone as pathetic as me?”

You Ruxu’s eyes instantly filled with tears, “I’m sorry, Auntie, it’s my fault.”

“Of course it’s your fault!” Yu Qiao said, “It wasn’t enough that you ruined our lives when you were young, and now you’re seducing Zhou Tianzui, what are you trying to do? What does our family owe you? Tell me! Do we owe you our lives? I’ll give you my life, just let Xiao Tian go!”

She stormed into the kitchen, her demeanor frantic. You Ruxu, ignoring the pain in her leg, hopped towards Yu Qiao. Yu Qiao grabbed a kitchen knife. You Ruxu called out, “Auntie!”

Yu Qiao seemed not to hear, “Whatever we owe you, I’ll repay it…”

You Ruxu, enduring the sharp pain in her leg, her face ashen, her lips bloodless, trembling slightly, hugged Yu Qiao, “Auntie, please calm down, Auntie…”

Yu Qiao pushed her away violently. You Ruxu, afraid she would hurt herself with the knife, reached out to grab the blade. Yu Qiao struggled, and as they wrestled, the knife slipped, cutting You Ruxu’s hand, blood welling up instantly. You Ruxu swayed, the pain making her dizzy. Yu Qiao, seeing the blood, froze, and You Ruxu took advantage of the moment to grab the knife, but her body, unable to support her weight, she stumbled, hitting the glass kitchen door, the glass rattling ominously.

Yu Qiao looked down at You Ruxu, who was sitting on the floor, holding the knife, her hand bleeding profusely, the blood staining her clothes, a shockingly bright red.

    A sudden silence.

You Ruxu said, “Auntie, I know you hate me, that you despise me, you can hit me, yell at me, vent your anger on me.” She looked up slightly, tears streaming down her face. “Just don’t hurt yourself, okay?”

Suddenly, Yu Qiao thought of Zhou Tianzui.

“Mom, if you’re hurting, just hit me, it won’t hurt me, but don’t hurt yourself, please?”

Yu Qiao’s voice was choked with emotion, “What are you trying to do?”

“Playing the good person now?” Yu Qiao said, “It’s too late!”

You Ruxu, enduring the excruciating pain in her hand and leg, her face ashen, her lips bloodless, trembling slightly, her phone suddenly rang, breaking the tense silence, once, twice, three times.

Her hand trembling, she answered the call.

It was Chen Xiang, telling her they were waiting for her at the station.

She said, “I’ll be there soon.”

After hanging up, she struggled to stand up, placed the knife on the counter, and hopping on one leg, stood in front of Yu Qiao, “Auntie, if you want, I won’t do the interview anonymously.”

    Yu Qiao didn’t reply.

You Ruxu took her silence as agreement.

She slowly made her way to the wheelchair and just as she sat down, Yu Qiao said, “You will do the interview anonymously.”

    You Ruxu looked at her.

Yu Qiao said, “If you do it openly, you’ll be attacked, and Xiao Tian will feel sorry for you. Do you think I’ll give her another chance to care about you? No, Shi Ran, I want you to carry the shame of your actions for the rest of your life! Live in guilt forever!!!”

You Ruxu’s body tensed, the blood flowing freely from her hand, staining her clothes and the armrest of the wheelchair, dripping onto the white tiles.

    A bright, shocking red.

    A stark contrast.

    You Ruxu pursed her lips.

She looked at Yu Qiao and said again, “I’m sorry.”

Then she turned and wheeled herself out of the kitchen. Just as she reached the doorway, Yu Qiao called out, “Shi Ran.”

She turned around, and Yu Qiao, holding a bowl of chicken soup, threw it at her, like dumping garbage.

    Chapter 112: If

You Ruxu spent a long time feeding Zhou Tianzui, whose appetite wasn’t good, eating the porridge in small, hesitant bites. She said to You Ruxu, “You go eat.”

“I’m not hungry yet.” You Ruxu said, “Are you done?”

    Zhou Tianzui said, “I’m full.”

You Ruxu looked down at her, Zhou Tianzui’s face pale, making her eyes seem even brighter. Usually so talkative, she was unusually quiet now. Zhou Tianzui looked up, meeting You Ruxu’s gaze, “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.” You Ruxu looked down. “I’m going to eat.”

She returned to the table. Yu Qiao had finished eating and was clearing the dishes. She said, “I’m not staying tonight.”

Zhou Tianzui, thinking it was because of their embrace earlier that Yu Qiao was leaving, didn’t try to persuade her to stay, just told her to be careful. After Yu Qiao left, You Ruxu picked at her cold food, her appetite gone.

A message notification. She glanced at her phone, her eyes falling on the previous message.

She scrolled up and clicked on it.

    She put down her chopsticks.

Zhou Tianzui, hearing this, asked, “Are you full?”

    You Ruxu said, “Yes.”

She cleared the table, scraping the leftover food into a container, putting the trash in a separate bag, then went to the bathroom to get a warm towel for Zhou Tianzui, helping her wash her face. Zhou Tianzui adjusted the bed slightly, still lying down, trying to move, when You Ruxu said, “Don’t move.”

Zhou Tianzui said, “It’s not that bad.”

You Ruxu said, “It still hurts.”

Zhou Tianzui said, “What about you? Don’t you hurt?”

You Ruxu said, “I’m fine now.”

Zhou Tianzui said, “Then get up and walk around.”

    Hitting a sore spot.

You Ruxu said, “At least I’ll be able to walk before you.”

They bickered like children, deliberately avoiding the topic of Zhou Qiming, their work, the news online, like two turtles retreating into their shells, shutting out the outside world, their conversation light and meaningless.

Zhou Tianzui, after washing her face, seeing You Ruxu still working on her laptop, said, “Not going to sleep?”

You Ruxu said, “Just a couple more emails.”

Zhou Tianzui watched her work. You Ruxu was often busy when they lived together, but they deliberately avoided each other’s work. So, whenever she saw You Ruxu working, she would go to her room, read some articles or medical journals, and wait until You Ruxu came to bed.

Recently, however, she often watched You Ruxu work.

Her focused attention, the quiet intensity, a comforting warmth.

    She said, “Come here.”

You Ruxu looked up at her.

Zhou Tianzui said, “Bring your laptop over.”

You Ruxu hesitated, then placed the laptop on her lap and wheeled herself over to Zhou Tianzui’s bed. Zhou Tianzui moved over slightly. The bed wasn’t big, there would be no space left if they both lay down side by side. You Ruxu, worried about Zhou Tianzui’s wound, shook her head.

Zhou Tianzui said, “Get up here.”

You Ruxu, unable to refuse, lifted the blanket, supported herself with her hands, and sat on the bed. She opened the small table attached to the bed, placed the laptop on it, the perfect distance. You Ruxu’s slender fingers flew across the keyboard. Zhou Tianzui listened to the rhythmic clicking, her head resting near You Ruxu’s waist, inhaling her scent.

She hadn’t felt sleepy before, but now, she wanted to sleep.

    She closed her eyes.

You Ruxu, after sending the emails, looked down at Zhou Tianzui, her eyes closed. It had only been a few days, yet Zhou Tianzui seemed to have lost weight, not just physically, but her usual energy also seemed to have diminished. She gently brushed Zhou Tianzui’s bangs away from her forehead, and Zhou Tianzui’s eyelids fluttered open.

    Still a light sleeper.

You Ruxu said, “Go to sleep, I’ll move to the other bed.”

    Zhou Tianzui said, “Don’t go.”

You Ruxu placed the laptop on the bedside table, closed the small table, and lay down beside Zhou Tianzui. Zhou Tianzui held her hand, their palms slightly sweaty. You Ruxu’s leg was still uncomfortable. Zhou Tianzui said, “Put it on my leg.”

“No.” You Ruxu said, “Your leg will go numb.”

    Zhou Tianzui said, “It’s fine.”

You Ruxu carefully placed her leg on Zhou Tianzui’s, then after a few seconds, took it back. They lay side by side, the narrow bed leaving no space between them, the railings on both sides like a protective barrier, enclosing them. You Ruxu turned slightly, half lying on Zhou Tianzui, listening to her rapid heartbeat, “You’ll never fall asleep like this.”

You Ruxu said, “Then let’s not sleep.”

Zhou Tianzui looked down at her, “What do you want to do if we don’t sleep?”

    You Ruxu said, “Talk.”

Zhou Tianzui asked, “What do you want to talk about?”

You Ruxu said, “Are you still going to be a doctor?”

Zhou Tianzui said, “We’ll talk about it after our trip.”

You Ruxu asked again, “Are we still going on that trip?”

Zhou Tianzui didn’t answer this time, just held You Ruxu’s hand tightly beneath the blanket, their fingers interlaced. You Ruxu snuggled closer, her hair brushing against Zhou Tianzui’s face. She brushed it away and said, “I’ve been thinking lately.”

Zhou Tianzui asked, “Thinking about what?”

“About when we first met.” You Ruxu said, “You hadn’t been at the hospital for long then.”

Zhou Tianzui had transferred from another hospital, shortly before You Ruxu came for the interview. The director had asked her to pick You Ruxu up, and later, when You Ruxu went to their office, several people had tried to convince her to assign the liaison task to them.

Zhou Tianzui could have easily taken the opportunity to curry favor, but she hadn’t.

You Ruxu said, “I was very happy.”

    Zhou Tianzui said, “About what?”

You Ruxu said, “You said, you would be my contact person from now on.”

She hadn’t understood her feelings for Zhou Tianzui back then, just that the decision made her happy, Zhou Tianzui said, “You had a crush on me back then?”

    A half-joking, half-serious question.

Zhou Tianzui said, “You were quite reserved.”

She hadn’t shown any signs, if she hadn’t said it now, Zhou Tianzui would never have guessed. You Ruxu said, “It wasn’t about being reserved.”

She hadn’t wanted to impose on Zhou Tianzui’s life.

She didn’t know about Zhou Tianzui’s sexual orientation, and even if they were both interested, their professions presented a huge obstacle. But people were strange, these issues, after she found out who Zhou Tianzui was, no longer seemed like obstacles.

Perhaps she needed a reason to stay by Zhou Tianzui’s side.

And atonement was the perfect excuse.

She sometimes felt Zhou Tianzui wasn’t cruel enough to her, she wanted Zhou Tianzui to torment her, yet also to love her, but when Zhou Tianzui truly showed her affection,

    She couldn’t believe it.

Zhou Tianzui said, “You’re so complicated.”

You Ruxu chuckled, looking up at Zhou Tianzui, “Aren’t you complicated as well?”

Zhou Tianzui said, “I’m not complicated, when I make a decision, it’s final.”

    You Ruxu was speechless.

After a long moment, she asked, “When did you start liking me?”

Zhou Tianzui said, “Why do you want to know?”

You Ruxu said, “Can’t I ask?”

    Zhou Tianzui said, “You can.”

    You Ruxu asked again, “When?”

Zhou Tianzui said, “I don’t remember.”

You Ruxu, lying on top of her, looked into her eyes, so close that she could see her own reflection in Zhou Tianzui’s clear, bright eyes, she remembered how those eyes looked when she smiled, when she cried, when she was happy, when she was angry, like images etched in her memory, You Ruxu’s face appearing every time she closed her eyes.

You Ruxu said, “Forget it then, if you don’t remember.”

Zhou Tianzui said, “Hug me tighter, maybe I’ll remember.”

You Ruxu wanted to laugh, but tears welled up in her eyes, “Am I not hugging you already?”

“That doesn’t count.” Zhou Tianzui said, “Hug me tighter.”

You Ruxu hugged her tighter, her body half draped over Zhou Tianzui’s, one leg resting on hers, her head turned to the side, Zhou Tianzui’s arm around her shoulder, You Ruxu’s soft breaths warm against her ear.

They embraced for a long time.

You Ruxu said, “Do you remember now?”

    Zhou Tianzui said, “Almost.”

You Ruxu looked up at Zhou Tianzui, their eyes meeting. A faint blush colored the corners of Zhou Tianzui’s eyes, a stark contrast against her pale skin, her long, thick eyelashes casting shadows, dark circles under her eyes, her expression tired and vulnerable. You Ruxu, seeing the change in her eyes, their color softening as they gazed at her, her lips parted slightly, her head tilted back, Zhou Tianzui hesitated for a moment, then lay back down on the bed.

    You Ruxu asked, “What’s wrong?”

    Zhou Tianzui said, “It hurts.”

You Ruxu said, “Then don’t move.”

Zhou Tianzui, her arms still around You Ruxu, “I won’t move, you cooperate.”

Before You Ruxu could ask what she meant by “cooperate,” Zhou Tianzui shifted slightly, their faces now close. You Ruxu, her eyes widening slightly in surprise, felt Zhou Tianzui’s lips on hers.

    Soft lips.

A light, fleeting touch, then she pulled away.

You Ruxu’s eyes reddened, one arm still around Zhou Tianzui, her other hand gently cupping Zhou Tianzui’s face, she returned the kiss.

Closing her eyes, tears welled up, dampening their hospital gowns.

It was unclear whose tears they were.

The kiss was soft and lingering, You Ruxu’s hands gently cupping Zhou Tianzui’s face, as if she couldn’t get enough, leaning in again when Zhou Tianzui pulled away slightly.

Taking the initiative, so unlike her.

After a long moment, You Ruxu released Zhou Tianzui. They lay side by side, looking at the ceiling.

You Ruxu said, “I’m doing the anonymous interview tomorrow.”

Zhou Tianzui said, “Okay, come back early after you’re done.”

    You Ruxu smiled faintly.

She heard Zhou Tianzui also chuckle softly.

They didn’t look at each other.

Zhou Tianzui asked, “If you hadn’t found that notebook back then, would you still have come to Jindu?”

You Ruxu looked at the fluorescent light above, its white glow tinged with other colors, a dazzling sight, and said, “No.”

Zhou Tianzui asked, “What would you have done?”

You Ruxu said, “I don’t know, probably listened to my mom and joined the court system?”

Zhou Tianzui said, “That would have been nice.”

You Ruxu then asked, “What about you?”

Zhou Tianzui said, “I would still be a doctor.”

You Ruxu said, “That would have been nice too.”

Zhou Tianzui said, “But there’s no ‘if’.” She looked at You Ruxu, “You came to Jindu, and we met.” You Ruxu turned her head, her eyes, still slightly red from crying, clear and bright, reflecting the light.

    Reflecting Zhou Tianzui.

Zhou Tianzui said, “A Ran, let’s try again, okay?”

You Ruxu looked into her eyes, then after a few seconds, wrapped her arms around Zhou Tianzui, burying her face in her embrace, holding her tightly.

    Chapter 111: It Is

Zhou Tianzui didn’t go home that night, but she did change wards, moving into the same room as You Ruxu. You Ruxu was in a VIP single room, requiring a key card to enter, which deterred most visitors, and the ward became quiet. Wu Xiulian, after helping them move, seemed to have something to say to Zhou Tianzui, but with Yu Qiao and You Ruxu present, she hesitated, then said, “I’ll come back tomorrow then. Sister, are you going home with me?”

Yu Qiao said, “I’ll stay here with them, they’re both injured.”

Wu Xiulian said, “Then I’ll be going.”

She glanced at Zhou Tianzui and You Ruxu, then left.

You Ruxu saw her to the door. When she returned, she received a call from Chen Xiang, her voice as energetic as ever, “Teacher You, did anyone call you?”

“Why?” You Ruxu’s voice was calm and even as she wheeled herself back into the ward. Zhou Tianzui watched her talk on the phone, turning her head slightly. It was a single room, and she had moved her bed closer to You Ruxu’s. Yu Qiao was cutting fruit for them, her mood much improved compared to the past few days, even smiling when she entered the ward earlier, a rare sight recently.

Yu Qiao looked down, hearing You Ruxu say, “I understand.”

Chen Xiang said, “But there are still many people questioning the story online.”

After all, it was a twenty-year-old case, not easily explained with just a notebook. The online discussions were mostly doubts and demands for more evidence, a heated debate. You Ruxu said, “I’ve contacted Captain Zhou.”

Chen Xiang said, “Okay, I’ve already arranged tomorrow’s interview. You just focus on resting today.”

    You Ruxu said, “I will.”

As Chen Xiang had said, after the initial shock and anger subsided, people started questioning the story, finding the timing too coincidental, how could a twenty-year-old notebook suddenly appear? If it existed, why wasn’t it presented earlier? Some even suspected that the TV station was protecting Zhou Qiming, using Zhou Tianzui’s injury to gain sympathy.

That was how rumors worked, a single seed of doubt could take root and grow.

Many people were also leaving comments on her social media, demanding more concrete evidence.

You Ruxu glanced at the time; it wasn’t even nine o’clock yet.

Yu Qiao handed her a plate of fruit, “Xiao Xu, you should eat some too.”

You Ruxu took the plate with both hands: “Thank you, thank you, Godmother.”

She looked at Zhou Tianzui, lying quietly in bed, unusually silent. You Ruxu wheeled herself over to her bedside and offered her the fruit. Zhou Tianzui looked at her for a few seconds, then took a slice of apple and ate it slowly.

You Ruxu also ate a slice, a bittersweet taste.

She heard Yu Qiao ask, “Is there still a problem?”

You Ruxu said, “No, there’s no problem.”

Just past nine o’clock, the Jindu police issued a statement, one about the preliminary results of the notebook verification, the other confirming the identity of the interviewee.

The full verification results usually took half a month, but the preliminary results were much faster. You Ruxu had asked Captain Zhou for the preliminary results, which, combined with the interviewee’s identity verification, left no room for doubt.

Of course, some people wouldn’t be convinced no matter what. But the focus of the online discussions shifted.

    Shifted to the interviewee.

And a new round of digging began.

You Ruxu, seeing the numerous “revelations” online, put down her phone and ate her fruit. They hadn’t eaten much for dinner, and Yu Qiao wanted to make them some late-night snacks, but Zhou Tianzui said, “Mom, don’t bother, I’m not hungry.”

“Even if you’re not hungry, Xiao Xu must be, she’s been busy all day.” Yu Qiao said, “Xiao Xu, what would you like?”

You Ruxu said, “Some fruit is fine.”

“You two need to nourish yourselves, can’t be careless, what if you develop long-term health problems later?” Yu Qiao rambled on, and You Ruxu suddenly felt a pang of nostalgia. She remembered when she first became Yu Qiao’s goddaughter, she was like this too, always fussing over her, even their phone calls would last for several minutes, ending with Yu Qiao asking, “Xiao Xu, am I being too much of a bother?”

You Ruxu had never felt bothered.

It wasn’t that long ago, but it felt like a lifetime. Now, remembering those moments, she felt a lump in her throat.

You Ruxu looked down and said, “Godmother, don’t bother, just sit down and rest.”

“I’m not tired.” Yu Qiao had been through a rollercoaster of emotions these past few days, Zhou Qiming’s case resurfacing, another wave of attacks and accusations, she thought it would be like before, another disaster, but You Ruxu had resolved it.

She felt strangely calm now, no longer resisting their relationship.

Xiao Tian was a good person.

Xiao Xu was also a good person.

Them being together, it was good.

She started imagining the trip Zhou Tianzui had described, after she recovered, the three of them traveling together.

    Yu Qiao looked down.

It was just a pity, she never got to meet that child. Yu Qiao clenched her hand, then seeing You Ruxu eating her fruit, took a deep breath, and relaxed her hand. You Ruxu said she wasn’t hungry, but Yu Qiao still went out to buy her some food. Only You Ruxu and Zhou Tianzui remained in the ward. You Ruxu sat by her bed, seeing her staring at the ceiling, she asked, “What are you looking at?”

Zhou Tianzui said, “My mom went out?”

“Yes, to buy some things.” You Ruxu said, “I submitted my resignation today.”

Zhou Tianzui’s gaze sharpened, focusing on You Ruxu, “What did they say?”

“They didn’t believe me.” You Ruxu said, “They all thought I was joking.”

You Ruxu, ever since joining the station, had always prioritized work, working overtime while her colleagues rested, taking on assignments no one else wanted, covering every story, big or small, working herself to exhaustion.

Even Shi Qi had said, anyone else might resign, but not her.

    But she had.

Shi Qi couldn’t believe it, “Really?”

    You Ruxu said, “Really.”

Her tone was calm, her expression composed. Shi Qi was completely bewildered.

    Zhou Tianzui asked, “Any regrets?”

You Ruxu wasn’t sure which she was referring to, Zhou Qiming’s case or her resignation. She thought for a moment, then asked Zhou Tianzui, “Do you have any regrets?”

Zhou Tianzui looked at her. They hadn’t had much time alone recently. Yu Qiao had finally agreed, a heavy burden lifted, yet it also felt like a new weight, a sense of guilt accompanying every action.

Zhou Tianzui didn’t regret her choice.

She didn’t regret it now either.

    It was just painful.

    She closed her eyes.

You Ruxu suddenly leaned closer, pulling on the bedsheet, sliding closer to Zhou Tianzui, reaching out to hold her hand. You Ruxu was both eloquent and inarticulate, but she knew Zhou Tianzui understood her.

Zhou Tianzui, her hand held by You Ruxu, wanted to turn over, but the movement sent a jolt of pain through her abdomen, the wound reopening, she couldn’t move, she had been lying in the same position all day, it hadn’t been uncomfortable before, but now, she suddenly wanted to turn, a restless energy coursing through her, a mix of itching and pain, her face paling, her body covered in a cold sweat.

You Ruxu, seeing this, was worried, “What’s wrong? Zhou Tianzui, what’s wrong?!”

“I’m fine.” Zhou Tianzui gritted her teeth, “I’m fine.”

Just a sudden wave of pain.

    Overwhelming her.

    Zhou Tianzui said, “Hug me.”

She wanted to sit up, to be held. You Ruxu, ignoring the pain in her leg, got up and leaned over her, wrapping her arms around Zhou Tianzui’s waist, holding her gently through the blanket. Zhou Tianzui said, “Hold me tighter.”

You Ruxu’s embrace tightened, her arms around Zhou Tianzui’s waist. Zhou Tianzui wanted to hug her back, but her arm hurt too much, she could only rest it lightly on You Ruxu’s back.

Surrounded by each other’s familiar scent, Zhou Tianzui’s pain gradually subsided. She lay there quietly, held by You Ruxu.

Yu Qiao, entering the room without knocking, stopped abruptly, seeing them, and quickly closed the door, standing outside.

You Ruxu, hearing the noise, released Zhou Tianzui and sat in her wheelchair, looking at Zhou Tianzui for a few seconds, then wheeled herself to the door and opened it, “Godmother.”

Yu Qiao hadn’t expected to see them embracing.

Although she had been preparing herself, seeing that scene still shocked her. She looked at You Ruxu and gave a small “mm-hmm,” changing the subject, “I bought some food, have some.”

    You Ruxu said, “Okay.”

She took the bag from Yu Qiao, who wheeled her back to the small dining table. Zhou Tianzui couldn’t sit up, so Yu Qiao fed her porridge. The atmosphere in the ward was slightly awkward. Yu Qiao said, “I heard downstairs that the murderer in the Fengyuan case confessed.”

You Ruxu looked up, “He did?”

Yu Qiao nodded. You Ruxu checked her phone, the messages in the group chat were flying, everyone had been focused on Zhou Qiming’s case, the Fengyuan story continued to be reported, but without much progress, and now, with the confession, there wasn’t a single mention of it in the group chat.

    Because of Xu Jinwan.

    You Ruxu also fell silent.

Just as she was about to exit the group chat, she received a message, an unknown number, but a number she knew too well, a number she had memorized, calling every weekend, asking, “Haven’t you received it yet? It’s a package, a file folder, with a notebook inside, the kind you use for work, black cover, there’s a name inside…”

You Ruxu opened the message: [Reporter You, it’s Ji Lanfang, do you remember me?]

    Of course she remembered.

You Ruxu: [Hello, is something the matter?]

Ji Lanfang: [Nothing much, just saw you on the news today and remembered your calls, that package, it was Zhou Qiming’s work journal, right?]

You Ruxu stared at her phone, forgetting to eat.

Ji Lanfang: [Don’t misunderstand, since the interviewee chose to remain anonymous, I won’t interfere, I just admire your persistence all these years.]

You Ruxu pursed her lips, her fingers hovering over the screen, typing and deleting several times, before finally replying: [Yes, it was that package.]

After sending the message, there was no reply.

You Ruxu put down her phone and heard Zhou Tianzui say, “I’m not eating anymore.”

“Always so picky.” Yu Qiao said in exasperation, “Just starve then!”

You Ruxu, seeing this, said, “Godmother, let me feed her, you go ahead and eat.”

Yu Qiao, annoyed with Zhou Tianzui, glared at her, handed You Ruxu the bowl and spoon, and said, “Let her be if she doesn’t want to eat, you haven’t finished yet.”

“My food’s a little too hot, I’ll eat it later.” You Ruxu said, “You go ahead and eat, you haven’t had dinner yet.”

Yu Qiao nodded, sat at the table, and watched You Ruxu coax Zhou Tianzui to eat, the scene from when she entered the ward earlier replaying in her mind, a wave of complex emotions washing over her. Talk about acceptance, that scene was quite a shock, but not unacceptable.

Yu Qiao was trying to convince herself, breaking apart her disposable chopsticks, when she saw You Ruxu’s phone light up.

    A new message notification.

She glanced at it unintentionally and saw the message on the screen: [You’re that little girl, aren’t you?]

    Chapter 110: Agreement

The online rumors about Zhou Tianzui’s father reached a fever pitch after You Ruxu’s report.

Wrongful accusations, misunderstandings, a belated truth.

These were common tropes in TV dramas, a long-awaited revelation, the wrongly accused finally cleared, the protagonist vindicated, a seemingly perfect ending with a bittersweet undercurrent.

Such stories could be discussed endlessly in dramas, let alone in real life. It sparked heated online discussions. After You Ruxu’s report, the TV station’s hotlines were overwhelmed with calls.

All three teams’ lines were busy. The usually bustling TV station was eerily quiet. The station director stood in the meeting room, holding Zhou Qiming’s work journal, his voice filled with emotion, some of the people below teary-eyed.

You Ruxu stood at the doorway, looking inside. Everyone listened attentively.

The Zhou Qiming incident had a significant impact on the station, accused of a cover-up, demands for a thorough investigation, the station director almost dismissed. After the initial chaos subsided, some people even blamed Zhou Qiming.

Saying he was shameless for doing such a thing.

Those people were no longer at the station, but their hurtful words lingered.

    It was the same online.

The initial criticism and insults, following You Ruxu’s report, were replaced by an eerie silence.

Then an outpouring of anger and sympathy.

[Zhou Qiming was slandered for over twenty years? I heard from my mom that it was a huge scandal back then, his family suffered the most, several suicide attempts, saved each time, then accused of faking it.]

[If this wasn’t real, I wouldn’t believe it. A reporter who fought for justice, labeled a rapist after his death, how ironic!]

[Then why was he accused of being a rapist? I thought it was strange before, even the police hadn’t concluded he was the perpetrator, so why was everyone condemning him? And those who were vehemently attacking him online a few days ago, just for saying the police hadn’t reached a conclusion, were accused of defending a rapist, do these people not have to take responsibility for their words?]

[Why do you all believe this reporter? What if it’s just another act, like back then? I heard this You Ruxu is friends with Dr. Zhou from the First Affiliated Hospital.]

[A dark heart sees darkness everywhere. Why don’t you look up Reporter You Ruxu’s credentials? She was the one who reported on the Fengyuan incident, risking her life, you probably didn’t know that, did you? Oh, of course you didn’t, who paid you to say such ignorant things?]

Those trying to manipulate public opinion were quickly called out.

If it were any other reporter, it might not have been so convincing, but You Ruxu, in the past year, from the fireworks factory explosion to the Fengyuan case, her reports had made a lasting impression on the public, her ability to steer public opinion back on track during times of crisis, upholding the principles of fairness, justice, and transparency, fearlessly facing pressure and threats, her name synonymous with integrity. People remembered the chaos after the fireworks factory explosion, how the marketing accounts tried to manipulate the narrative, yet her reports remained unbiased, a beacon of truth, firm and unwavering.

Now, with her reporting on this story, it added another layer of credibility.

And with trust, came sympathy and regret.

[Even TV dramas wouldn’t dare to portray something like this.]

[I can’t even imagine what they went through.]

[I really admire Dr. Zhou, being able to become a doctor, to maintain such a strong spirit, in such circumstances, Zhou Qiming was a hero, and so is she.]

[This is the first time I’ve truly understood the meaning of ‘the world kisses me with pain, I return it with a song.’]

Chen Xiang, holding her laptop, said to You Ruxu, “Teacher You, have you seen the trending topics?”

You Ruxu said, “What trending topics?”

“This one.” Chen Xiang said, showing her the screen.

The headline: [The world kisses me with pain, I return it with a song.]

You Ruxu didn’t need to click on it to know it was about Zhou Tianzui, her eyes burning slightly, “I can’t believe Dr. Zhou went through so much, how did she endure it all these years, she’s amazing.”

“Teacher You, have you read the comments?”

You Ruxu read some of them, the previous insults and accusations gone, replaced by a wave of sympathy and anger, not just for Zhou Qiming’s wrongful conviction, but also for the blind and reckless public opinion that had condemned him.

Those rumors and gossip, they were invisible killers.

You Ruxu looked down, then after a moment of silence, excused herself and wheeled herself out.

    Chen Xiang watched her go.

From the Zhou Qiming case many years ago to Zhou Tianzui now, public opinion seemed to be an inescapable force. Kind people were easily deceived, blinded by misleading narratives, which was why reporters were needed, why persistence was crucial.

Chen Xiang suddenly remembered You Ruxu’s words, words she often repeated.

Uncover the truth, report it truthfully.

At this moment, she truly understood the weight and significance of those words.

You Ruxu received a call from Yu Qiao just as she left the TV station, “Who was that person?”

You Ruxu opened her mouth, then closed it, unable to speak.

Yu Qiao continued, “Xiao Xu, I’m not asking for anything else, just tell me who that person was, they…”

“Mom, what are you doing?” The call was interrupted. Yu Qiao looked at Zhou Tianzui, who had turned off the TV. The room was quiet. Yu Qiao held the phone. Zhou Tianzui asked, “Were you calling You Ruxu?”

She had been watching TV, not paying attention to Yu Qiao, only hearing her after the TV was turned off.

Yu Qiao had been trying to call You Ruxu, her phone was off, and when she finally got through, Zhou Tianzui saw it.

Yu Qiao said, “I just wanted to ask Xiao Xu something.”

“Are you asking her who that person was?” Zhou Tianzui asked, the words difficult to say, a wave of nausea and self-loathing washing over her. She clenched her hands, forcing herself to speak, “Don’t ask, she can’t violate her professional ethics.”

    Seeing Yu Qiao’s stunned silence.

She closed her eyes, “Do you want her to lose her job?”

“I…” Yu Qiao quickly said, “No, of course not, I’m very grateful to Xiao Xu, she did so much for us.”

Zhou Tianzui couldn’t bear to hear any more, “Don’t mention it.”

“Mom, let’s not talk about this anymore.” Zhou Tianzui’s voice was strained, her body weak and exhausted. She turned her head away, her forehead covered in sweat. Yu Qiao said, “You…”

Yu Qiao looked at her, thinking she was overwhelmed by emotions, remembering her father, remembering his name finally cleared after so many years, hence her distress. She didn’t dare say anything more, just nodded, “Okay, Mom won’t mention it again.”

Not mentioning it didn’t mean she didn’t want to.

    After twenty years.

Finally, no more whispers behind her back, no more pointing fingers and accusations, finally, she could proudly say, my husband was a good reporter. She felt both happiness and a deep sorrow.

Yu Qiao wiped away her tears, “Xiao Tian, I’m going out to buy some things, you rest.”

    Zhou Tianzui nodded in agreement.

After Yu Qiao left, she looked at her phone, not calling You Ruxu, the guilt and self-blame preventing her from reaching out, afraid to contact her, to send a message, even a single word felt like a betrayal.

    Zhou Tianzui closed her eyes.

You Ruxu’s call was disconnected by Yu Qiao. Wu Xiulian, waiting downstairs, saw her come out and wheeled her wheelchair over, asking, “Did you send the notebook for verification?”

“Yes.” You Ruxu said, “I just sent it.”

Wu Xiulian asked, “Going back to the hospital?”

You Ruxu, remembering Yu Qiao’s phone call earlier, started to say, “Aunt…”

“Xu Xu.” Wu Xiulian said, “I’m the one who wronged Dr. Zhou and her mother, not you, don’t take the blame for my mistakes.”

You Ruxu’s eyes reddened. Wu Xiulian continued, “I contacted your mother before you went on air. Xu Xu, no matter your decision, your father and I will support you.”

“If you want, we can also issue a public apology.”

You Ruxu’s heart clenched, she sat in the passenger seat, her hand gripping the seatbelt, her head turned towards the window, her voice low, “Aunt, is my mom angry?”

Wu Xiulian’s nose tingled. She blinked back tears, took a deep breath, and said, “No.”

    You Ruxu lowered her head.

    She said, “I’ve wronged them.”

    “It’s me who wronged you.”

You Ruxu looked down at her hands and said, “We decided to do an anonymous interview.”

    Wu Xiulian was silent.

She had heard it in the news, but hearing it from You Ruxu again, it still felt surreal. She knew it wasn’t just You Ruxu’s decision, but both of theirs.

You Ruxu had carried this burden of guilt for so many years, and now, she was choosing to continue carrying it, so was Zhou Tianzui.

Because of this precious and hard-won love.

Zhou Tianzui truly loved You Ruxu.

    More than they could imagine.

Wu Xiulian wiped away You Ruxu’s tears, “Don’t cry, I’ll take you to the hospital.”

She started the car, its headlights cutting through the darkness, the red taillights blinking as they turned onto another street. When they arrived at the hospital, Zhou Tianzui’s ward was crowded, nurses, security guards, and patients in hospital gowns, all holding gifts.

“Dr. Zhou needs to rest, please come back later.” The nurses patiently tried to disperse the crowd. Two pregnant women handed over their fruit baskets, “Please give these to Dr. Zhou, we wish her a speedy recovery.”

The nurses barely had time to respond before the women walked away. You Ruxu appeared at the doorway, and the crowd, recognizing her, parted, “It’s that reporter.”

“Reporter You.” You Ruxu looked over, it was a colleague, who waved at her, then was stopped by a nurse. The crowd made way, and You Ruxu was wheeled into the ward.

Compared to the commotion outside, the ward was quiet. Zhou Tianzui, lying in bed, looked over, hearing the door open. Seeing You Ruxu, she said, “You’re here.”

    Her voice was hoarse.

    You Ruxu asked, “Where’s Auntie?”

“She said she was going out to buy something.” Zhou Tianzui said, “Is there still a crowd outside?”

    You Ruxu said, “Yes.”

After You Ruxu’s report, many media outlets tried to contact her, but the nurses stopped them at the door. The commotion attracted the attention of other patients, and word spread, more people gathering outside, wanting to visit Zhou Tianzui.

Zhou Tianzui said, “Can I be discharged tomorrow?”

She was a doctor herself, yet she was asking You Ruxu.

You Ruxu said, “No, your wound hasn’t healed yet.”

Just then, the door opened, and Yu Qiao entered, “Why are there so many people outside?”

Zhou Tianzui said, “Reporters, they want to interview me.”

There were also other appointments, but Zhou Tianzui had asked the nurses to cancel them.

Yu Qiao said, “You’re still recovering, don’t bother with the interviews, just tell Xiao Xu what you want to say, she can report on it.” She looked at You Ruxu, her attitude much warmer, “Right, Xiao Xu?”

You Ruxu nodded: “Yes, Auntie, if you have anything you want to say, you can tell me.”

“I…” Yu Qiao looked down, a bitter smile on her face. “What else is there to say? It’s been so many years.”

The damage caused, it couldn’t be undone.

    You Ruxu pursed her lips.

Yu Qiao said, “And, you don’t have to call me Auntie anymore.” You Ruxu looked up. Yu Qiao smiled at her, “Call me Godmother.”

    You Ruxu’s expression changed slightly.

Unlike the previous time, when it was Zhou Tianzui’s request, this time, it was Yu Qiao offering.

It meant she accepted their relationship.

    Such a huge step.

Something You Ruxu hadn’t even dared to dream of. She looked at Yu Qiao, her throat constricting, noticing how much she seemed to have aged these past few days, the gray strands at her temples more visible now, yet the smile on her face so warm and genuine. You Ruxu quickly looked away, her gaze meeting Zhou Tianzui’s.

She bit her lip hard, drawing blood, the metallic taste filling her mouth, snapping her back to reality. She looked at Yu Qiao and called out, “Godmother.”
