    Chapter 17: Ruxu

You Ruxu was always mindful of her image in public. Her personality dictated that she wouldn’t do anything out of line, so Zhou Tianzui hadn’t expected her to make such a “sudden move.” Although, when they first got together, there had been similar moments, fleeting and brief.

There were times when You Ruxu would wait for her in the car, working while she waited. When Zhou Tianzui finished work and got into the car, You Ruxu wouldn’t even notice. She would sit beside You Ruxu, quietly, and just look at her.

You Ruxu would turn her head slightly, a hint of surprise in her voice: “When did you finish work?”

The upward lilt of her voice was pleasant. Zhou Tianzui would say, “Half an hour ago.”

“I didn’t notice.” You Ruxu would say, “Why didn’t you call me?”

Zhou Tianzui would lie: “I did, you didn’t hear me.”

“Sorry.” You Ruxu would say seriously, “I probably wasn’t paying attention.”

Zhou Tianzui would ask, “Just sorry?”

“I…” You Ruxu would clutch the printed documents, look around, then suddenly lean over and kiss her on the cheek. One time, they were almost caught by a colleague, and You Ruxu pushed her away. After that, she never initiated any intimacy in public.

Zhou Tianzui was lost in thought. You Ruxu had already answered the phone.

“Yes, I know, I’ll be at the station at nine tomorrow morning.” You Ruxu said, “Schedule the interview with CCTV first, I’ll go to the police station later.”

“Didn’t Chen Xiang tell you?” You Ruxu said, “I’m interviewing Mr. Zhao.”

“There’s very little information about him right now.”

He was the head of the fireworks factory, yet after such a major incident, there was no news about him. Currently, the internet was almost entirely focused on attacking Zhang Xiaojie, and the attention was on Chen Mo, as if someone had deliberately pushed these two into the spotlight, while Mr. Zhao, who should be the one giving an explanation, remained silent.

    It was very unusual.

You Ruxu scheduled the interview for tomorrow at noon, using lunchtime to ask more questions. Shi Qi really didn’t know. She asked, “Interviewing Mr. Zhao?”

    You Ruxu said, “Yes.”

Shi Qi didn’t seem as opposed as before. Although very few people online were mentioning Mr. Zhao, and a report about him might not generate much interest, she trusted You Ruxu. You Ruxu wouldn’t do anything pointless. She said, “Alright, I understand, you go ahead.”

You Ruxu said, “Thank you, Boss.”

Her eyes curved into crescents, her smile dazzlingly beautiful. When she lowered her eyes, the lines of her profile were sharp and refined. Zhou Tianzui didn’t drive, just leaned back in her seat, seemingly waiting for You Ruxu to finish the call, but her gaze lingered on You Ruxu’s profile, unable to look away.

The warmth on her cheek and lips, soft, fragrant.

The beef soup with vinegar that Zhou Tianzui had just drunk now tasted a little sweet. She pursed her lips and heard You Ruxu say, “Okay, then that’s settled, I’ll hang up now.”

Putting down her phone, You Ruxu looked at Zhou Tianzui and asked, “Aren’t we leaving?”

Zhou Tianzui glanced at her, started the car, and drove away from the hospital. You Ruxu leaned back against the seat, a look of exhaustion on her face. She always maintained a capable and polished image in public, only revealing this side of herself in private. Zhou Tianzui suppressed the urge to tease her and took a thin blanket from the back seat, offering it to You Ruxu.

You Ruxu had already fallen asleep.

Zhou Tianzui held the blanket out for a few seconds, but no one took it. She turned her head and saw You Ruxu sleeping with her eyes closed. She had done a live broadcast today, so her makeup was still intact, her features perfectly sculpted. Zhou Tianzui pulled over to the side of the road and covered You Ruxu with the blanket. Her expression was complex. She rested one hand on the window, her chin on her hand, and turned to look at You Ruxu intently.

Their meeting hadn’t been dramatic. An ordinary day, an ordinary encounter. It was only after they got to know each other that their shared identity as women made their relationship seem both ordinary and extraordinary.

Falling for someone could happen in an instant, but the choices that followed were difficult.

She had hesitated, wavered, tossed and turned. Then, she saw You Ruxu lying on an emergency bed, being wheeled into the hospital. One moment she was messaging her, saying, I just finished work, and the next, she was lying in the emergency room, her life uncertain.

The choice, at that moment, didn’t seem so difficult anymore.

She chose to be honest with herself.

    But she had overestimated herself.

Zhou Tianzui gripped the steering wheel, her gaze lingering on You Ruxu. Her eyes were tired, a faint redness around them. She closed her eyes, feeling the dampness on her cheeks.

A message notification sounded on her phone. She instinctively turned it off, but her grip loosened, and the phone slipped from her hand, landing on her lap. She picked it up, turned off the sound, all in one smooth motion, without waking You Ruxu. She was still sound asleep.

Only after this instinctive action did Zhou Tianzui laugh self-deprecatingly.

Laughing at her own wishful thinking.

She thought the wall she had built could block everything, but You Ruxu only needed to take a small initiative, a single kiss, and her defenses crumbled. You Ruxu didn’t even need to do anything, just lying beside her was enough to throw her into turmoil.

Zhou Tianzui shook her head, smiling, and looked out the window at the dark night dotted with streetlights, twinkling like stars.

Her phone lit up again. This time, it wasn’t a message, but a call. Zhou Tianzui frowned and answered. It was the director: “Get back to the hospital!”

The tone was angry. Zhou Tianzui pursed her lips and said, “Okay.”

She hung up and saw You Ruxu opening her eyes, looking at her: “What’s wrong?”

Her voice was soft just after waking up, not as clear as usual. Zhou Tianzui said, “I have to go back to the hospital, something came up.”

You Ruxu nodded, pulling the blanket tighter around her, and said, “You go ahead, I’ll wait for you in the car.”

She wanted to sleep a little longer. Zhou Tianzui, seeing this, turned on the car’s heater, turned the car around, and drove back to the hospital. She didn’t turn off the engine before leaving, the headlights remaining on.

You Ruxu was truly exhausted. She didn’t notice when Zhou Tianzui left. The car doors automatically locked after a while, enclosing her in the small but warm space, filled with Zhou Tianzui’s scent.

    It made her feel safe.

She dreamt again. In the dream, she and Zhou Tianzui were having dinner together. It was their second month together, Zhou Tianzui had just returned from a business trip, and they met at a restaurant near the hospital. She ordered a bowl of beef soup, slowly breaking the sesame cakes, looking at her phone. Zhou Tianzui messaged: “I’m here.”

Looking up, Zhou Tianzui, wearing a light blue jacket, was standing in front of her. After sitting down, she took a sip of soup and said, “It’s delicious.”

“Do you want another bowl?” Seeing that Zhou Tianzui had unknowingly finished her bowl, she asked. Zhou Tianzui shook her head. She always had a small appetite and couldn’t eat too much. Zhou Tianzui took over the task of breaking the cakes. She lowered her head, added half a spoonful of vinegar, stirred it, and talked about things happening at the station while eating.

They chatted casually, only about trivial work matters, when they heard someone nearby say, “Who is this? Who is this Tiantian?”

The man instantly panicked, his tone changing, “She’s a friend, that’s just her nickname!”

“You even call her by her nickname? You two must be close!” The woman’s voice was filled with displeasure and anger. The two argued and left. She took a sip of the sour soup and asked Zhou Tianzui, “Do you have a nickname?”

“Me?” Zhou Tianzui said, “I don’t.”

She paused, then asked, “Do you?”

“I—” She hesitated for a few seconds, then said, “I do.”

She told Zhou Tianzui, “My nickname is A Ran.”

Zhou Tianzui lowered her eyes, her tone unchanged: “Why A Ran?”

“I don’t know.” She smiled at Zhou Tianzui. “My mom has always called me that.”

Zhou Tianzui said, “I see.” She lowered her head slightly, her eyes hidden by her long eyelashes. Zhou Tianzui looked at her and said, “I’ll call you that from now on too.”

Her heart skipped a beat. Suddenly, the beef soup she loved so much became difficult to swallow.

    She lowered her head.

    Didn’t respond.

Her phone ringing startled You Ruxu awake. She sat up. She was alone in the car. The phone kept ringing. You Ruxu looked down; it was her mother.

She picked up the phone, rubbed her temples, and answered: “Mom.”

“Ruxu, it’s Mom.” The woman’s voice was exceptionally gentle and soft. You Ruxu sat up straight and hummed in acknowledgement. The woman said, “Have you called your father recently?”

You Ruxu said, “I called him a while ago.”

“You don’t know your father’s angry, do you?” The woman said, “He saw the news a while ago, he knows you’re working as a reporter again. He’s worried about you, and angry. Didn’t he call you?”

    You Ruxu said, “No.”

The woman said, “Then call him when you have time. You know his temper, he’s worried about you but too embarrassed to say it. He keeps asking me about you every day.”

You Ruxu said, “I understand, thank you, Mom.”

“Then, Ruxu, when are you coming home?” The woman said, “It’ll be getting cold soon, come home and get some clothes.”

You Ruxu said, “Mm, I have a few days off after this news story.”

“That’s good.” The woman said, “Take care of yourself. Are you still sharing an apartment with that Dr. Zhou? Are you causing her any trouble? Should Mom find you a new place?”

“No need, Mom.” You Ruxu said, “She’s very nice. Living together, we can help each other.”

The woman agreed: “That’s true, it’s not easy being alone. I’m relieved that you have someone to help you. Next time you come home, if Dr. Zhou is free, invite her over. She’s always taking care of you, we should thank her.”

You Ruxu’s face paled slightly. She said, “I know.” She lowered her eyes. “She’s always busy at the hospital. I’ll ask her when she’s free.”

The woman could only say, “Alright then, Mom won’t bother you anymore. Rest well, and don’t overwork yourself, okay?”

    You Ruxu: “Mm, I know.”

After hanging up, You Ruxu turned to look at her reflection in the car window. People said she was like the bright moon, clear, pure, and unattainable, but no one knew the darkness she hid within.

She took a deep breath, closed her eyes. Her phone vibrated.

    She opened it.

It was a message from her mother.

[Ruxu, Mom sent you some seasonal fruits. I sent a lot, remember to give some to Dr. Zhou. We can’t always trouble her to take care of you.]

You Ruxu scrolled up. Her mother sent her messages every other day.

[Ruxu, the temperature dropped today, wear more clothes.]

    [Ruxu, have you eaten?]

    [Ruxu…]

She had replied to all of them. Now, seeing this newly arrived message, You Ruxu’s fingers pressed against the screen, her knuckles white. She replied: [I know, thank you, Mom.]

Mother: Dr. Zhou, thank you for taking care of our Xiao Xu.
Zhou Tianzui: Auntie, we “take care” of each other.

    Chapter 16: The Uproar

Zhou Tianzui rarely spoke so much. He Wei knew something about Zhou Tianzui’s temperament: few words, busy, and precisely because of this, everyone was afraid of her.

But today, she had said a lot.

Zhou Tianzui said, “I could have concealed it, not reported it. The agreement between you and Lin Luo was your own affair. I could even have benefited from it, securing the deputy director position thanks to you. And then what? Then watch you stand there helpless the next time a pregnant woman hemorrhages, watch as you personally push a patient to death’s door?”

    He Wei’s face was pale.

Zhou Tianzui said, “Do you know what your win-win situation is? It’s me becoming an executioner, me acquiescing, me turning a blind eye, and then watching you experiment on patients?”

    He Wei said, “I didn’t…”

She looked up at Zhou Tianzui: “I’ve already learned, I know how to perform emergency procedures…”

“He Wei,” Zhou Tianzui said, “why are you so dense?”

He Wei’s eyes were red. She looked at Zhou Tianzui, clenched her hands, and said, “I, I just…”

“You just stole a small bit of credit, just waiting for the applause and accolades that would be offered to you, just wanting to collaborate with your beloved Teacher You on an interview.” Zhou Tianzui said, “He Wei, of course you can do these things, and no one would be the wiser. Even if someone knew, what could they do to you? You can make mistakes, you have that privilege, but your patients don’t. If you only see being a doctor as a glamorous profession, then I advise you to take off that white coat sooner rather than later.”

Zhou Tianzui’s voice was cold: “Don’t harm yourself and others.”

    He Wei bit her lip.

Zhou Tianzui brushed past her and walked out. The door opened, and she saw You Ruxu sitting to the side. Their eyes met. You Ruxu gripped the edge of her notebook, the cardboard digging into her fingertips. She came back to her senses and heard Zhou Tianzui ask, “Why are you here?”

You Ruxu said, “I was going to ask Zeng Jing a few questions.”

She asked Zhou Tianzui, “Working overtime?”

    Zhou Tianzui said, “No.”

She walked towards the changing room. You Ruxu walked beside her. Fu Shushu and Lin Luo approached them. Lin Luo looked hesitant, glanced at Zhou Tianzui, then lowered her head and walked away with Fu Shushu.

Zhou Tianzui paused for a moment, lowered her gaze, and entered the changing room.

You Ruxu waited for her outside.

Actually, she used to wait for Zhou Tianzui to finish work often. Back then, when they had just met, Zhou Tianzui would use her after-work hours to show her around the hospital, explaining how to handle doctor-patient relationships, talking about difficult medical cases. It was the beginning of spring, winter had just passed, and everything was coming back to life.

She remembered it clearly. Every time she came, she would see Zhou Tianzui in her white coat, either guiding new interns with a serious expression, discussing medical conditions with colleagues, or greeting her with a faint smile.

She would stand at the doorway and hear her colleagues call out, “Dr. Zhou, Reporter You is here.”

Zhou Tianzui would walk towards her and say, “Half an hour more, can you wait for me?”

She would nod and sit among the doctors.

Everyone thought she was gathering material for medical publicity, but actually, she was just watching Zhou Tianzui.

The doorknob clicked open. Zhou Tianzui walked out and said to You Ruxu, “Do you want me to accompany you to see Zeng Jing?”

“No need.” You Ruxu said, “Let’s go.”

Zhou Tianzui walked beside her, through the busy emergency room corridor. An emergency bed was being pushed through the crowd.

“Make way!” The nurse’s voice boomed, “Please make way!”

People around them scrambled to move aside. You Ruxu felt an arm around her waist, pulling her towards the wall. Turning around, it was Zhou Tianzui.

When they first met, she had encountered similar situations while filming in the emergency room. Zhou Tianzui would pull her to the side, wait for the emergency cart to pass, and then ask her, “Are you okay?”

Now, she simply said, “Be careful.”

    You Ruxu said, “Mm.”

She lowered her head and smiled.

After leaving the hospital, Zhou Tianzui took out her car keys. You Ruxu said, “Let’s go eat.”

She looked outside the hospital: “I want some beef soup.”

Zhou Tianzui glanced at her, then put away her car keys and followed her.

The area around the hospital had the most fruit stands and snack bars. You Ruxu and Zhou Tianzui had eaten at almost every shop. Sometimes, when they were busy, she would accompany Zhou Tianzui for some fried rice. When they weren’t busy, they would have some soup, eating slowly.

They hadn’t been to this beef soup place for a long time. Since returning to her reporting position, You Ruxu rarely came to the hospital, let alone eat here. There weren’t many people inside, as it wasn’t mealtime. Only a few people sat together, their faces etched with worry. Such expressions were common in hospitals. You Ruxu and Zhou Tianzui sat at a table in the back, ordering two bowls of beef soup and baked sesame seed cakes. You Ruxu liked to break the cakes into small pieces and soak them in the soup. Sometimes, when she was busy answering calls, Zhou Tianzui would have already broken them for her by the time she returned.

As soon as the sesame cakes arrived, Zhou Tianzui habitually picked one up. You Ruxu looked at her, stirring her beef soup, and said, “Do you remember Zeng Jing’s due date?”

Zhou Tianzui looked up at her and said, “The 20th. What about it?”

You Ruxu thought of the circle Chen Mo had drawn around the 20th and thought, as expected.

But she hadn’t figured out the reason yet, so she simply explained, “The fireworks factory incident.”

Zhou Tianzui broke the thin cake into small pieces and put them in You Ruxu’s beef soup, the sesame seeds sticking to her fingertips. After she finished, You Ruxu took a napkin.

    Zhou Tianzui paused.

In the past, when You Ruxu was busy at the station, she would eat and answer calls simultaneously, having no hands free to break the cakes, so she had to do it. Every time she finished, You Ruxu would hand her a napkin. If the call was over, You Ruxu would even help her wipe her fingers clean.

Zhou Tianzui didn’t move, offering her fingers. You Ruxu naturally helped her wipe them clean.

She lowered her head, her hair neatly tied up in a bun, every strand in place. Zhou Tianzui curled her fingers and said, “Done.”

You Ruxu put down the napkin and said, “I suspect there’s something fishy about the fireworks explosion.”

Zhou Tianzui lowered her head to drink the soup. After being out in the cold, a sip of hot soup warmed her whole body. She asked, “What’s fishy? Wasn’t it Zhang Xiaojie?”

You Ruxu shook her head: “I don’t know.”

It really wasn’t clear yet. Of course, she wouldn’t simply believe the one-sided story online and convict Zhang Xiaojie, but she didn’t rule out the possibility either. Before the police reached a conclusion, she could only make bold assumptions and carefully verify them.

Zhou Tianzui looked at her and said, “Why don’t you ask Captain Zhou?”

Before You Ruxu could speak, Zhou Tianzui continued, “Don’t you enjoy discussing cases with her?”

“What am I…” Before You Ruxu could finish, her phone screen lit up, displaying the name “Captain Zhou.” She pursed her lips, glanced at Zhou Tianzui, and answered the call.

Zhou Tianzui’s expression was calm. She switched her bowl of beef soup, which didn’t have any broken cakes in it, with You Ruxu’s and took a sip. You Ruxu liked to add vinegar, even to her beef soup, half a spoonful. Zhou Tianzui tasted it; it was all sour. She frowned, wanting to switch back, but then decided it wasn’t necessary and simply stirred it listlessly.

The sesame cakes disintegrated into a paste, floating on the surface. You Ruxu saw this as soon as she finished her call. She drank from Zhou Tianzui’s bowl; it was bland and tasteless.

They finished their bowls of soup without much appetite. Zhou Tianzui went to pay the bill. You Ruxu called Chen Xiang and asked her to prepare the equipment for an interview at the police station tomorrow. Chen Xiang was surprised: “Interviewing who?”

“Mr. Zhao.” You Ruxu said, “The police have agreed, Mr. Zhao is willing to be interviewed.”

Chen Xiang said, “Okay, I understand.” Before You Ruxu could hang up, she said, “Teacher You, the boss wants you to come to the station early tomorrow. We have to do that interview we collaborated with CCTV on tomorrow.”

    You Ruxu said, “I understand.”

Chen Xiang added, “Should we postpone the interview with the hospital intern? Will it be snatched by other stations if we wait any longer?”

You Ruxu, remembering the conversation she overheard at the hospital, figured there was also a power struggle on Zhou Tianzui’s side. She said, “We’ll decide later. Postpone the hospital interview.”

Chen Xiang agreed. You Ruxu continued, “Also, check for me whether Chen Mo, Zeng Jing, and Zhang Xiaojie knew each other before.”

Afraid Chen Xiang hadn’t heard clearly, she added, “Before they joined the factory.”

Chen Xiang was surprised but didn’t ask, simply saying, “Okay, I understand.”

After hanging up, Zhou Tianzui walked over. You Ruxu got up and walked to the hospital with her. The parking garage was on the basement level. They didn’t take the elevator but walked down the stairs. The basement level parking lot was for staff only, and it was deserted, with only a few cars. A red sports car was parked next to Zhou Tianzui’s car. You Ruxu remembered that He Wei drove that car.

Thinking of He Wei, she couldn’t help but recall Zhou Tianzui’s words at the hospital.

The missing infant case she was investigating had been solved. She had been attacked, stabbed several times while walking home at night. Fortunately, people often walked that route, and she was found in time, saving her life. The station didn’t dare let her continue as a reporter, using the excuse of her failing a psychological evaluation to reject all her requests. She became an editor for two years.

At that time, she and Zhou Tianzui were in a sort of ambiguous phase. Because of their work, they maintained a sometimes close, sometimes distant relationship. Neither had crossed the line, as if knowing what kind of new situation they would face once they did.

Later, when she was hospitalized, she had more contact with Zhou Tianzui. After she was discharged, it was her birthday, so she asked Zhou Tianzui out, to a couple’s restaurant. Later, she and Zhou Tianzui went home together.

What happened three years ago seemed both distant and vivid.

She still remembered the clothes Zhou Tianzui wore that day, holding the teddy bear, her beautiful eyes looking at her as she said, “Happy birthday.”

The night breeze dispersed Zhou Tianzui’s cool tone. She took the teddy bear and held it tightly.

“Shall we go?” The cool voice broke through her thoughts. You Ruxu came back to her senses and looked at Zhou Tianzui. She said, “You drive.” She got into the car, sat in the passenger seat, and pressed her temples. Zhou Tianzui sat beside her. The car was dark, the lights off. Just as You Ruxu leaned back against the seat, her phone rang. It was Shi Qi. Before she could answer, a voice laced with thorns came from beside her. Zhou Tianzui said, “Teacher You is really popular today…”

You Ruxu turned, her hand on the edge of the seat, leaned over, and kissed Zhou Tianzui on the cheek.

The car fell silent, only the incessant ringing of You Ruxu’s phone breaking the quiet.

    Just like Zhou Tianzui’s heartbeat.

    You Ruxu: Got you.
    Zhou Tianzui: …

    Chapter 15: Clues

Chen Mo’s doorstep was crowded. Only a day had passed since the fireworks explosion, and the police hadn’t released any concrete information, yet the internet had already labeled Zhang Xiaojie the “murderer” and Chen Mo the innocent victim. And Chen Mo’s life story was particularly dramatic.

Obedient since childhood, diligent in his studies, never causing his parents to worry. Knowing his parents were in poor health, he helped with housework from a young age. He was the quintessential “child from another family” that parents often spoke of.

After graduating from university, he didn’t pursue further studies but returned to Jindu for work. He found a job at the fireworks factory to support and care for his parents. The whole family was counting on a better future, never expecting such a tragedy. For Chen Mo’s parents, it was as if the sky had fallen.

Chen Mo’s parents had been sitting in their room all day, their hair now half-white. They remained silent when Chen Mo’s name was mentioned, but cursed at the mention of Zhang Xiaojie.

“Chen Mo’s life was so hard! Why did this happen to him…”

Chen Mo’s mother, her face streaked with tears and snot, cried her heart out in front of the camera, her eyes red and swollen, looking years older than yesterday. Chen Mo’s father remained silent, sitting in front of the reporters.

The reporter asked, “Mrs. Chen, I heard Chen Mo and Zhang Xiaojie used to be good friends?”

“Friends?” Mrs. Chen’s voice was shrill, “Chen Mo had no such friend! He didn’t! That Zhang Xiaojie is a menace!”

The reporter said, “Zhang Xiaojie is currently still in the hospital. Have his parents contacted you?”

The barrage of comments filled the screen.

    [Yeah, where’s Zhang Xiaojie’s family?]

[It wouldn’t be too much to ask for an apology to the victim’s family, right?]

[Zhang Xiaojie’s comfortably lying in the hospital, and his family hasn’t even come out to apologize. Like father, like son.]

[This is so heartbreaking. I can’t imagine what they’re going through. Is there a donation channel?]

The reporter asked, “Mrs. Chen, many kind netizens online want to donate to support you and Mr. Chen. Would you accept?”

“Thank you,” Mrs. Chen said, “but I don’t need it.”

She said, “I’m ready to join Chen Mo at any time. Please don’t donate.”

The barrage of comments was a mix of sympathy and curses, a stark contrast. Chen Xiang, looking at the screen, shuddered and said, “Teacher You, this couple is really pitiful.”

Their sorrow overflowed the screen, along with their hatred for Zhang Xiaojie.

The elderly couple didn’t hide their hatred in their eyes. Whenever Zhang Xiaojie was mentioned, Mrs. Chen would grit her teeth. You Ruxu suddenly remembered what Zeng Jing had said, that Chen Mo and Zhang Xiaojie used to be good friends.

Then he must have met Chen Mo’s parents.

Before the case was even concluded, they harbored such immense hatred. You Ruxu couldn’t understand it. She asked Chen Xiang, “Can we schedule interviews with any other victims’ families?”

Chen Xiang said, “There are a few, but they’re not very willing to be interviewed.”

    You Ruxu understood.

The live broadcast was being filmed at the Chen family’s home, cameras and microphones lined up, reporters crowding the doorway, flashes going off constantly. You Ruxu couldn’t get in. It wasn’t until evening, when most people had left, that she looked inside. The Chen’s home was dark, without a single light.

Chen Xiang handed her a bottle of water and said, “Teacher You, when are we going back?”

She looked at the other side, where members of Team 3 were.

Team 3 was responsible for Chen Mo. They hadn’t had any opportunities, but turning around, they saw You Ruxu. Thinking that they couldn’t get a word in edgewise at the company, they figured they could at least ask Chen Xiang to introduce them and invite You Ruxu to dinner. You Ruxu said, “Let’s wait a little longer.”

She was still watching today’s live broadcast, having watched it three times already.

Chen Xiang didn’t know what she was looking at and waited with her: “Is there a problem with the live broadcast?”

The live broadcast was showing Mrs. Chen talking about a calendar.

“Chen Mo has always been very thoughtful.” Mrs. Chen said, “This month was his father’s birthday. He marked it down early, saying he wanted to give his father a surprise.”

Mrs. Chen’s eyes were red, her voice choked with sobs: “He’s always been like this.”

Everyone present was moved, and the comments section was overflowing with sympathy. You Ruxu turned off the comments and replayed the calendar scene several times. The 28th was his father’s birthday. Besides that, another day was also circled.

    The 20th.

The reporter asked Mrs. Chen, “Is the 20th a special day?”

Mrs. Chen paused, then said, “Maybe it was his friend’s birthday. He was afraid he would forget.”

The reporter sighed: “Chen Mo was really thoughtful.”

Mrs. Chen wiped her tears, looked at Chen Mo’s photo, and started crying again. The live broadcast paused for a moment. You Ruxu turned off the screen. Chen Xiang called out, “Teacher You.”

You Ruxu looked at her: “What is it?”

Chen Xiang said, “Do you want to grab dinner together?” She gestured to the side. “The people from Team 3 want to invite you.”

You Ruxu followed her gaze. The three people from Team 3 looked over, their eyes shining. You Ruxu said to Chen Xiang, “I’m busy, I can’t. You guys go ahead.”

Chen Xiang exclaimed, “Then where are you going?”

You Ruxu said, “I’m going to the hospital.”

Chen Xiang wanted to follow, but You Ruxu told her to go home and rest, as she might not find any clues herself. Chen Xiang nodded, saying she would drop You Ruxu off at the hospital before going back.

    You Ruxu didn’t refuse.

In the car, Chen Xiang said, “Teacher You, the controversy surrounding Zhang Xiaojie online has flared up again.”

It wasn’t just flaring up, there was even more negative news than yesterday, even insignificant details were being dug up. No one was perfect, and when put under the microscope, everyone had their flaws. But on Zhang Xiaojie, these minor flaws became evidence of unforgivable sins, as if proving he was born a murderer. People were criticizing his photos, his behavior, and some even resorted to personal attacks.

[I hope Zhang Xiaojie dies immediately.]

[When will he be sentenced to death?]

[It’s best if he doesn’t wake up. He’ll only cause more harm if he does.]

Countless comments like these spread online after Chen Mo’s parents’ live broadcast. And those who had previously defended Zhang Xiaojie because of his newborn child, urging everyone to remain calm, were now labeled as paid trolls.

The internet, in an instant, became an accelerant, fueling the flames of the case, driving it forward with increasing speed.

The truth was drowned in the torrent of public opinion, no one cared.

You Ruxu arrived at the hospital at 8:30 pm. It was still crowded. Several ambulances were parked at the emergency room entrance, patients being carried out and quickly wheeled inside. She didn’t go in, but sat on a bench at the entrance, watching the people coming and going, the anxious doctors, the hurried nurses, the rushed family members, the discharged patients, each with their own expressions, forming a tapestry of life.

After sitting for about half an hour, she got up and walked towards the inpatient department, wanting to visit Zeng Jing again.

    Zeng Jing was asleep.

After a whole day of turmoil, she hadn’t had a proper rest since waking up. Tonight, she finally couldn’t hold on any longer and fell asleep holding her baby after feeding. You Ruxu walked to the ward door and looked inside. A small lamp was on. She didn’t enter. She saw the caregiver coming out, tiptoeing.

    She asked, “Is she asleep?”

The caregiver recognized her: “You’re that reporter.”

“Hello, my name is You Ruxu.” You Ruxu’s smiling eyes looked at the caregiver. The caregiver said, “I know, I recognize you. My son loves watching your news reports.”

She said, “Are you also here to interview Zeng Jing?”

You Ruxu asked, “Did anyone interview her today?”

“Someone from a new media outlet came to interview her, but they left after a short while.” The caregiver said, “Look at this poor child, just gave birth, and now she has to worry about this. She’ll definitely get sick later because of this.”

    You Ruxu listened and nodded.

The caregiver sat on a nearby chair. You Ruxu asked, “Aren’t you going home tonight?”

“No.” The caregiver said, “I’ll just listen for any sounds from the room. If the baby wakes up or needs her medication changed, I need to be here. But this child, I don’t know whether she’s lucky or unlucky. I heard she hemorrhaged during childbirth. It’s truly fortunate that she’s okay!”

You Ruxu said, “Yes, truly fortunate.”

“And the baby is also very healthy.” The caregiver said, “Doesn’t look like a premature baby, but her due date was this month, so it’s not really premature either.”

Hearing this, You Ruxu seemed to have thought of something. She looked at the caregiver: “When was her due date?”

“This month, I don’t know the exact date, you’ll have to ask the doctor.”

You Ruxu’s brow furrowed. She said, “Thank you.”

The caregiver quickly said, “You’re welcome. It’s me who’s taking up your time, making you talk to me.”

You Ruxu stood up, nodded at her, and walked towards the nurse’s station. She asked, “Who’s the doctor in charge of Zeng Jing?”

The head nurse recognized her and knew she was Zhou Tianzui’s friend, and that she had also conducted the previous interview with Zeng Jing. She said, “It’s Dr. Zhou.”

To be precise, it was He Wei.

He Wei performed the emergency rescue, so naturally, the patient was under Zhou Tianzui’s care.

You Ruxu nodded: “Zhou Tian—Has Dr. Zhou left work?”

The head nurse said, “Not yet, she should be in her office.”

You Ruxu thanked her and walked towards Zhou Tianzui’s office. She ran into Zhao Mingqi coming out of the office.

Zhao Mingqi greeted her: “Teacher You.”

You Ruxu asked, “Is Dr. Zhou inside?”

“Yes, yes, she is.” Zhao Mingqi had just come out, the door still ajar. He quickly stepped aside to let You Ruxu pass. You Ruxu, with a smile, held the doorknob and looked at Zhao Mingqi.

Zhao Mingqi slapped his forehead: “I still have to go to the wards. You go ahead.”

    You Ruxu said, “Thank you.”

Just as she pushed the door open, she heard Zhou Tianzui’s voice.

“He Wei, what do you mean?” You Ruxu instinctively took half a step back. Zhao Mingqi hadn’t mentioned anyone being inside.

Zhou Tianzui looked at He Wei, her gaze cold and heavy, her eyes sharp, making He Wei’s heart skip a beat. She said, “Dr. Zhou…”

“Do you think I didn’t expose you because I wanted a win-win situation with you?” Zhou Tianzui’s voice was cold. “He Wei, I was giving you a chance.”

He Wei’s face paled as she looked at Zhou Tianzui.

Zhou Tianzui said, “This is a hospital, you’re a doctor. The only win-win situation for us is when the patient is safe and sound, not those little schemes of yours. Talk to Director Song tonight and make things clear.”

He Wei bit her lip, her body frozen.

Zhou Tianzui looked at her and called out, “He Wei.”

He Wei was startled. Zhou Tianzui continued in a casual tone, “Don’t you like Teacher You?”

He Wei looked at her in surprise, her voice unsteady, unsure what Zhou Tianzui meant by suddenly mentioning You Ruxu. Had she told You Ruxu? Or was she warning her?

Zhou Tianzui did neither. She simply asked, “Then do you know why she changed positions back then?”

She had been an editor for two years.

Hearing this, He Wei breathed a sigh of relief, her anxiety lessening somewhat. She said, “It was because she was injured.”

“She was injured while investigating a missing infant case.” Zhou Tianzui looked at He Wei, saying each word clearly, “Right here in our hospital. She underwent a ten-hour surgery, her life hanging by a thread, almost didn’t make it several times.”

She said, “He Wei, do you find it strange that I’m telling you this?”

    He Wei indeed didn’t understand.

Zhou Tianzui said, “I want to ask you, if you were the one operating on your beloved Teacher You back then, what would the outcome have been?”

He Wei’s face paled again, all color draining from her lips.

The person outside the door held the doorknob and closed the door. You Ruxu stood quietly at the door for a long time.

Zhou Tianzui: Do you know why I told you about You Ruxu?
    He Wei: Why?
Zhou Tianzui: Because she’s my wife.
    He Wei: …

    Chapter 14: Waiting in Ambush

Hearing Zhou Tianzui’s words, He Wei looked at her: “Dr. Zhou, are you alright?”

Zhou Tianzui looked up at her, her eyes cold and indifferent, her expression unreadable. He Wei coughed lightly: “Good to hear you’re okay.” You Ruxu supported Zhou Tianzui, noticing the warmth of her hand on her waist, burning hot even through the fabric. She looked sideways at Zhou Tianzui. Zhou Tianzui said, “Take me to my office.”

You Ruxu paused, then helped her to her office.

He Wei wanted to say something as they walked away, but remembering Zhou Tianzui’s piercing gaze, her heart trembled, and she didn’t dare utter a word. She waited until You Ruxu emerged from the office a while later.

He Wei quickly offered a carton of milk: “Teacher You, would you like some?”

You Ruxu looked at her flushed face, recalling Zhou Tianzui’s words.

Can’t you tell she likes you?

You Ruxu said, “Thank you, but no.”

Her smiling eyes remained, but her demeanor was distant, yet not making it too awkward. He Wei stood there, feeling deflated: “Oh, okay. Then I’ll treat you to tea next time.”

You Ruxu smiled: “We’ll talk about it next time.”

She nodded at He Wei and went to the wards. He Wei’s shoulders slumped. She looked at Zhou Tianzui’s office door. Had Dr. Zhou already told You Ruxu?

Told her that she had taken credit for Lin Luo’s work?

No, You Ruxu was a reporter, Zhou Tianzui wouldn’t tell her about this.

    But what if?

What if Zhou Tianzui had told her? What would You Ruxu think of her then? He Wei bit her lip, her fingers picking at the edge of the milk carton. She heard the head nurse greet her, “Morning, He Wei.”

    She looked up: “Morning.”

Turning around, she saw Lin Luo.

Lin Luo didn’t say anything, just brushed past her. He Wei’s face darkened slightly. After a moment of hesitation, she knocked on Zhou Tianzui’s office door.

Zhou Tianzui was looking at a patient’s file. She looked down again when she saw He Wei enter. He Wei approached and asked, “Dr. Zhou, is your waist feeling better?”

Seeing her making small talk, Zhou Tianzui asked, “Is something the matter?”

    He Wei said, “I…”

She looked at Zhou Tianzui: “I wanted to ask Dr. Zhou, what should I say in the interview?” She added with emphasis, “After all, I’m under your guidance, Dr. Zhou.”

Zhou Tianzui caught her implication, looked at her for a few seconds, and with a faint smile, said, “I don’t have much experience with that.”

“But hasn’t Dr. Zhou been interviewed before?” He Wei said, “By the TV station, even.”

Hearing this, Zhou Tianzui lowered her gaze, her long eyelashes casting a shadow beneath her eyes, her pupils hidden in the shadow, making it difficult to discern her expression. The atmosphere became heavy.

    He Wei swallowed.

Zhou Tianzui said, “There’s nothing special to say, just tell the truth.”

He Wei asked, “Just telling the truth, will that lead to a win-win situation?”

Zhou Tianzui pursed her lips. Before she could speak, the landline rang. She answered the call and heard the voice on the other end say, “Dr. Zhou, Director Song wants to see you.”

She held the receiver, glanced at He Wei, and left the office. Patients and their families bustled in the corridor. A warning sign hung on the door of the room at the very end. She stood at the door and looked inside. You Ruxu was sitting there.

    Zeng Jing had woken up.

The baby was beside her, having just finished feeding, sleeping soundly. Zeng Jing’s eyes were red and swollen from crying, her face pale. She lay on the bed with no family to care for her. Both sets of parents couldn’t leave their homes, and only a caregiver was helping her. Seeing You Ruxu, Zeng Jing blurted out, “Zhang Xiaojie wouldn’t do such a thing, he wouldn’t.”

You Ruxu sat beside her, before even handing over her business card. Zeng Jing said, “I know you, Reporter You, from the TV station. Your colleague was just here.”

Chen Xiang had come earlier to lay the groundwork.

You Ruxu nodded and asked, “Has Zhang Xiaojie displayed any unusual behavior recently?”

    Zeng Jing said, “No, nothing…”

You Ruxu asked again, “Is he related to Mr. Zhao?”

Zeng Jing’s voice choked in her throat. She looked at You Ruxu, momentarily unsure how to answer this question. You Ruxu said, “Don’t worry, I won’t write anything inaccurate.”

    Zeng Jing remained silent.

You Ruxu closed her notebook and said, “Do you know what was on the Jindu midday news yesterday?”

Zeng Jing hadn’t watched the news. She hadn’t had the time, nor did she dare to pick up her phone, which was filled with curses and insults. She was afraid. Seeing those curses directed at her and the words wishing her and her baby’s death hurt more than her physical wounds. Zeng Jing shook her head.

You Ruxu said, “Yesterday’s midday news reported on your hospitalization due to heavy bleeding.”

Zeng Jing’s expression changed slightly as she looked at You Ruxu.

You Ruxu said, “It was my report.”

    “You!”

You Ruxu said, “Ms. Zeng, please don’t get agitated. I know you and your child don’t want to be disturbed right now, but if the case isn’t thoroughly investigated, the pain you’ll suffer will only increase.”

Zeng Jing said, “It’s already enough!” She choked back a sob. “Why are you still here disturbing us? What do you want to hear? Do you want to hear me say with my own mouth that Zhang Xiaojie caused the explosion?”

“No.” You Ruxu’s voice was calm and clear, calming. She looked at Zeng Jing, “Do you know what kind of comments are online yesterday?”

    Zeng Jing didn’t speak.

    How could she not know?

It was because she saw those comments that she hadn’t dared to sleep all night, afraid that someone would take her baby away in revenge.

You Ruxu said, “I took a look today, and public opinion about Mr. Zhang has shifted.”

    Zeng Jing looked at her.

You Ruxu took out her tablet, searched for the morning news and the Weibo accounts of several other news groups, and showed Zeng Jing the comments. Zeng Jing instinctively closed her eyes, only opening them after a few seconds.

[I heard Zhang Xiaojie’s wife is pregnant and just gave birth, so why would he destroy evidence?]

[Regardless, Zhang Xiaojie deserves to die!]

Unlike yesterday’s comments, the public opinion now had a different narrative.

[Why does he deserve to die? He just had a child, why would he destroy evidence?]

[I’ve been wanting to say this since yesterday, why is there so much malice towards Zhang Xiaojie? It’s so strange. Shouldn’t the focus be on the fireworks explosion itself? Even if it really was Zhang Xiaojie, he must have been instructed by someone. Why aren’t you all scolding the boss, but Zhang Xiaojie instead?]

[Yeah, why is everyone scolding Zhang Xiaojie?]

Seeing these comments, Zeng Jing’s eyes welled up. She couldn’t hold back and started crying. She said, “I don’t know, I don’t know why this happened. He just went to work, why, why…”

You Ruxu said, “Ms. Zeng, please calm down, you can’t get too worked up right now.”

Zeng Jing’s face was covered in tears.

You Ruxu handed her a tissue, looked at Zeng Jing, and thought about the online public opinion.

Everyone had the ability to think independently, but the internet could weaken this ability. Because the information received was limited, and coupled with the extreme comments from yesterday, people in such situations would develop conditioned reflexes, subconsciously believing those aggressive remarks, actively participating, their emotions heightened, uttering even more biased words. Often, public opinion was swayed this way. But as long as they were given a buffer period, a moment to calm down, they would start to unravel the truth and gradually regain their rationality.

Zeng Jing and her baby were this buffer.

They were the sedative that allowed netizens to calm down and regain their ability to think.

After hearing this, Zeng Jing looked at You Ruxu and said, “I thought…” She looked apologetic. “I’m sorry, Reporter You, I…”

“It’s okay.” You Ruxu said, “You’re doing great.”

Hearing this, Zeng Jing tried to force a smile, but it didn’t quite work, looking worse than crying. She said, “Xiaojie and Mr. Zhao are related, but we don’t usually interact.”

“We do visit each other during holidays, after all, he’s Xiaojie’s boss.”

    You Ruxu nodded.

Zeng Jing said, “But Xiaojie would never do such a thing. He knew I was about to give birth, how could he…”

Thinking of Zhang Xiaojie lying unconscious in the ICU, and the barrage of criticism outside, wishing him dead, Zeng Jing’s tears flowed uncontrollably. She said, “I’ve been busy preparing for the birth recently, I haven’t asked him about work, but he would never do such a thing.”

She repeated her assertion over and over.

You Ruxu glanced at her and said, “I understand.” She asked again, “Then how was your relationship with Chen Mo?”

“Chen Mo…” Zeng Jing paused for a few seconds, looked at You Ruxu, her eyes red. She said, “Chen Mo and Xiaojie had a very good relationship. His family wasn’t well-off, and Xiaojie lent him money several times to help him through difficult times. He often came to our house as a guest. Chen Mo was a very good person.”

Zeng Jing lowered her head: “Is he really gone?”

Although she had already known, she still held a sliver of hope.

Perhaps the news online was only one-sided, perhaps Chen Mo was only injured, perhaps…

Although she knew that these “perhaps” were just self-deception.

You Ruxu said, “Yes, he passed away.”

Zeng Jing’s face turned even paler, tears rolling down her temples. The baby beside her moved its arm in its sleep. Zeng Jing held its small hand. The baby moved a couple of times, then settled down. Zeng Jing looked at the baby, biting her lip hard, not making a sound.

There was a knock on the door. You Ruxu turned around. Chen Xiang said, “Teacher You.”

She looked at Zeng Jing: “You should rest, you’ve had a hard time today.”

Zeng Jing said, “Reporter You, has Xiaojie woken up?”

    You Ruxu said, “Not yet.”

Zeng Jing nodded. You Ruxu left the ward and heard Chen Xiang say, “Teacher You, something’s happened online again.”

You Ruxu looked at her: “What is it?”

Chen Xiang whispered, “Chen Mo’s parents are going to do an interview, a live broadcast.”

    You Ruxu frowned.

Chen Xiang said, “Not with our station, with another TV station. The news is already out, and the internet is in an uproar.”

You Ruxu looked at the tablet Chen Xiang handed her, seeing the news of Chen Mo’s parents’ interview trending online. Below, there were many posts describing Chen Mo’s character. There was a photo of Chen Mo’s mother holding a picture of him, leaning against a cabinet, looking lonely and desolate against a gray background, the atmosphere oppressive. You Ruxu asked, “Can we interview her?”

Chen Xiang said, “It’s a bit difficult now. Many people want to interview them. I called a few times earlier, but they hung up. Our station hasn’t been able to contact them either.”

You Ruxu only thought for a moment before saying, “Let’s go.”

    Chen Xiang asked, “Go where?”

You Ruxu said, “Wait in ambush.”

    Chapter 13: Help Me

You Ruxu had been running around all day, her calves aching, but her outward appearance was still impeccable. Close to her neck, one could smell the sandalwood scent of her perfume, light and airy, perfectly blending with her temperament. Zhou Tianzui’s nose brushed against her collarbone. You Ruxu tilted her head back slightly, biting her lip and asking, “Are you angry?”

She was exhausted, but leaning against Zhou Tianzui, smelling the familiar scent of disinfectant, strangely, her fatigue dissipated. She wanted to just stay like this, leaning on her.

    Even half-draped over her.

Zhou Tianzui lowered her head, her hands supporting You Ruxu’s waist, lifting her slightly and placing her against the shoe cabinet. Hearing You Ruxu’s question, she said, “Angry?” Her tone was still cool, the Zhou Tianzui she was familiar with. “Why would I be angry?”

She looked up, her eyes deep and bright in the darkness, partially hidden by her hair. You Ruxu reached out and brushed the strands of hair from her forehead behind her ear. Their eyes met. Zhou Tianzui’s expression paused for a few seconds before she regained her composure: “Teacher You is helping our hospital with publicity for free, I’m too happy to be angry. Why would I be angry?”

You Ruxu shivered in Zhou Tianzui’s arms, her hands tightening around her.

    She was different from usual.

Zhou Tianzui looked down at You Ruxu in her arms. Usually, You Ruxu was very compliant with her, never objecting to anything she did, but also not actively agreeing. At home, she was like a delicate, beautiful doll, letting her do whatever she wanted.

It was rare for her to be so dependent.

Zhou Tianzui released her hands, took two steps back, looked at her, and after a few seconds of silence, turned around. You Ruxu suddenly hugged her from behind.

Her voice was like the most enchanting musical instrument.

“Zhou Tianzui.” Her voice was soft and low, echoing in her ear, weaving a melody.

Late at night, Zhou Tianzui came out of the bedroom. While pouring herself a glass of water, she saw a bag by the shoe cabinet, the one You Ruxu brought back. She walked over and opened it, seeing the familiar crispy pastries.

Zhou Tianzui pursed her lips, glanced at the bedroom, then took the pastries and sat on the living room sofa, turning on the TV to watch the news while eating.

The news was a replay. Several channels were reporting on the Jindu explosion. The online discussion about the incident had reached its peak, all focused on Zhang Xiaojie. Following the midday news report, many people were now stationed at the hospital, waiting for his wife, Zeng Jing.

The police had instructed the hospital not to disclose Zeng Jing’s ward information. When Zeng Jing was admitted with heavy bleeding, it coincided with the emergency rescue, and her information hadn’t been fully entered into the system before she was rushed into surgery. So, when the media inquired, they were told the hospital didn’t know. However, things were worse for Zhang Xiaojie’s parents. It was said they couldn’t even leave their house, as many families of the victims were crowding at their doorstep, demanding an explanation. The elderly couple was hiding inside, and the media was also waiting there.

The news was filled with cries of grief, images of the still-smoldering ruins, billowing black smoke, taking away so many lives. Zhou Tianzui’s phone buzzed with a message. She looked down. It was from He Wei.

    [Dr. Zhou, are you asleep?]

Zhou Tianzui pursed her lips, her finger hovering over the screen. She replied: [Is something the matter?]

He Wei’s heart trembled at the reply. Although it was just through the screen, she could sense Zhou Tianzui’s coldness and imposing manner. She wrapped herself in the blanket and typed: [It’s about the emergency rescue.]

    Zhou Tianzui replied casually: [Mm.]

He Wei typed: [The hospital wants me to do an interview.]

Actually, it was she who wanted to do the interview. She heard it was Jindu TV who extended the invitation, specifically You Ruxu.

Her little scheme, which had been seen through earlier, was now wavering again after hearing this news. Being interviewed by You Ruxu was something she hadn’t even dared to dream of before, and now such a good opportunity was presented to her, her goddess—

He Wei couldn’t resist the temptation and wanted to test Zhou Tianzui’s attitude first.

Zhou Tianzui didn’t express any particular attitude, simply replying with a cold: [Mm.]

He Wei exhaled, not sure whether she was relieved or more nervous.

Zhou Tianzui ate a few pastries, placed her phone on the coffee table, went to the bathroom to wash up, and finally returned to the bedroom. You Ruxu was sleeping on her side. She had changed into pajamas and taken a shower, lying quietly on the bed, so beautiful she looked unreal, exuding elegance and perfection. Even lying like this, she was captivating.

A dim bedside lamp was on. Zhou Tianzui wasn’t resting. She sat on the edge of the bed, on the side where You Ruxu was lying, so she could see You Ruxu’s profile just by turning her head. It was hidden in the dim light of the bedside lamp, a few strands of hair falling on her cheek. Zhou Tianzui reached out, then drew back her hand. She remembered what the director had said at the hospital.

“Zhou Tianzui, Zhou Tianzui, you’re really playing dumb. Is it important who performed the rescue right now?”

“Dr. Zhou, think it over carefully.”

And Fu Shushu’s look. Zhou Tianzui felt irritated and couldn’t sleep. She got up and went to the study. Before leaving, she turned back and turned off the bedside lamp. The room was pitch black, even quieter now.

You Ruxu slept soundly until her alarm went off. When she woke up, her legs were a little numb. She glanced to the side, Zhou Tianzui wasn’t there. There were sounds coming from outside. You Ruxu put on her slippers and walked out. She saw Zhou Tianzui sitting at the coffee table, typing. Breakfast was already prepared on the dining table. She walked over. Zhou Tianzui didn’t look up: “You’re awake.”

You Ruxu saw several documents placed by the coffee table, the computer screen glowing, and a half-finished cup of coffee. She asked Zhou Tianzui, “You didn’t sleep last night?”

Zhou Tianzui said, “I slept a little.”

She had rested on the sofa for a while, dreamt of some random things, then woke up with a start. She hadn’t been able to fall asleep again after that. You Ruxu nodded and turned to go to the bathroom. As she reached the doorway, Zhou Tianzui called out, “A Ran.”

She hadn’t slept much last night and wasn’t in her best state. Her voice was a little low, different from her usual cool tone.

    You Ruxu turned around.

Zhou Tianzui said, “You really like being a reporter.”

A look of surprise flashed across You Ruxu’s eyes before she regained her composure: “Yes.”

Zhou Tianzui said, “If one day, the condition for you to continue being a reporter is to do something against your conscience, would you do it, for the sake of being a reporter?”

Her eyes were clear and bright, her pupils deep.

You Ruxu’s body tensed, meeting Zhou Tianzui’s gaze. Her hand slowly curled up, her fingernails digging into her palm, the lines of her arm taut. She said, “I would.”

It was an unexpected, yet expected answer.

Zhou Tianzui smiled, lowering her eyes to conceal the coldness beneath. She said, “Go wash up.”

You Ruxu entered the bathroom, closed the door, and slowly walked to the sink, looking at herself in the mirror, her eyes slightly red. She lowered her head and washed her face.

When she came out, Zhou Tianzui was sitting at the dining table, having already peeled an egg for her. There was a plate in front of You Ruxu with an egg, a pan-fried bun, and a bowl of cooked rice porridge. The rice porridge was sweet, the fragrance filling her senses, the warmth soothing her emotions.

She lowered her head to eat the porridge and saw that Zhou Tianzui had already finished. She said, “I’ll go with you later.”

Zhou Tianzui looked up: “You’re going to the hospital?”

You Ruxu said, “Yes, I’m going to interview Zeng Jing.”

Zhou Tianzui ate her egg and nodded. She waited for You Ruxu to finish eating and cleaned up the dishes. You Ruxu went back to her room to change and put on makeup. When she came out, Zhou Tianzui was ready. Even though she had just changed clothes, as You Ruxu walked beside her, she seemed to smell the familiar scent of disinfectant, a familiar scent that made her feel at ease.

You Ruxu was driving. Zhou Tianzui was a little tired, leaning back in the passenger seat to rest. Her eyelashes were long and curled, naturally beautiful. You Ruxu remembered the first time she saw Zhou Tianzui. She had rolled down the car window, and the first thing she saw was a pair of beautiful eyes, clear and bright. Her eyelashes lifted slightly, casting a small shadow beneath. She stared at those eyelashes, lost in thought for a few seconds.

Zhou Tianzui had greeted her with a smile: “Reporter You? From Jindu TV? I’m Zhou Tianzui, the hospital sent me to pick you up.”

    She opened the passenger door.

Back then, Zhou Tianzui was slightly different from now.

You Ruxu came back to her senses and drove towards the hospital. They arrived early, but hospitals were always busy, crowded with people at any time, especially after the explosion, with even more patients and their families. You Ruxu parked the car in the staff parking lot. Zhou Tianzui woke up as soon as the car stopped.

She was always a light sleeper. You Ruxu asked, “Want to sleep a little longer?”

Zhou Tianzui said, “No.” She rubbed the corners of her eyes and opened the door to get out. You Ruxu walked over to her and handed her the car keys. They walked towards the elevator. After a few steps, they heard someone call out from behind, “Teacher You!”

The voice was clear, young, and filled with uncontainable excitement. You Ruxu turned around and saw the intern she had met a few times, He Wei. She glanced at Zhou Tianzui and said to He Wei, “Hello.”

“H-hello—” He Wei stammered, her eyes fixed on You Ruxu. This was the first time she was so close to her. You Ruxu smelled nice, an intellectual and elegant fragrance. He Wei said, “Teacher You, I really like your news reports.” She added, “I watch them every day!”

    You Ruxu smiled: “Thank you.”

Her smiling eyes were gentle and approachable. He Wei couldn’t help but move closer. Zhou Tianzui called out in her usual cool tone, “Teacher You.”

You Ruxu turned to look at Zhou Tianzui.

Zhou Tianzui said, “I just twisted my waist, help me.”

You Ruxu paused for two seconds, walked over to her, and just as she reached out, Zhou Tianzui leaned on her shoulder, one arm wrapping around her waist, pulling her into an embrace.

    Chapter 12: Overtime

The hospital was still in chaos. Zhou Tianzui came down from the operating table, hurriedly ate a few bites in her office, and was then called by the director.

“Have you investigated the emergency rescue?” The director looked at her and Fu Shushu. There were many patients today, every clinic was extremely busy. An obstetrics intern performing emergency rescue procedures was absolutely forbidden under normal circumstances. However, today was a special situation, and the rescue was timely, both mother and child were safe, so the hospital hadn’t issued any instructions yet, perhaps waiting for the patient to wake up. The current priority was to find out who performed the rescue.

    Fu Shushu lowered her head.

Under normal circumstances, she would definitely hope it was He Wei, as it was a violation of hospital regulations. But the situation was different now. During their consultation, they found the emergency rescue had been performed exceptionally well. If it had been any later, the mother might have died from hemorrhaging, or the baby might have suffocated. Therefore, at this moment, lives were more important than rules. Judging by the hospital’s stance, they clearly didn’t intend to pursue the matter.

She had already heard several people say it was He Wei. If it was indeed He Wei, it would be significant.

It would add weight to Zhou Tianzui’s candidacy for the deputy director position.

    So she couldn’t say it.

    Zhou Tianzui also remained silent.

The director frowned: “Are both of you mute today?”

Zhou Tianzui said, “We’ve been too busy today, haven’t had time to investigate thoroughly.”

“It’s just asking a question.” The director frowned. “Is it that complicated? Shushu, go call He Wei and Lin Luo over.”

Fu Shushu glanced at Zhou Tianzui and went out with her head lowered.

The director looked at Zhou Tianzui: “Are you not thinking clearly after all those surgeries today?”

She said, “Such a good opportunity. I’ve heard it was He Wei who performed the rescue. Why are you pushing this opportunity away?” The director continued, “Besides, with He Wei’s background, this would only benefit you!”

Zhou Tianzui said, “What if it wasn’t her?”

The director looked at her: “Zhou Tianzui, Zhou Tianzui, you really…what am I supposed to say to you?”

    Zhou Tianzui’s face darkened.

Soon, He Wei and Lin Luo entered the office. Zhou Tianzui’s gaze swept over them. He Wei flinched. She had encountered stricter people before, and Zhou Tianzui hadn’t even said anything, but she felt completely seen through, down to her bones.

    Including her little schemes.

She had participated in the consultation.

“This emergency rescue was really well done.” A doctor said, “Although our hospital prohibits interns from performing emergency rescues independently, the situation today was special, and the rescue saved both the mother and the child. Considering the circumstances, this deserves commendation.”

    “I agree.”

    Other doctors echoed.

He Wei stood at the edge, looking at Lin Luo not far away. She pulled Lin Luo into the break room. When they came out, they ran into Zhou Tianzui. Zhou Tianzui asked who performed the rescue, and she said it was her. Zhou Tianzui’s face immediately darkened.

Before this, she had only been somewhat afraid of Zhou Tianzui. Now, for some reason, she was extremely afraid.

    Afraid to meet her eyes.

He Wei and Lin Luo stood to the side. The director spoke: “I heard you two performed an emergency rescue today?”

He Wei glanced at Lin Luo and nodded: “Yes.”

The director said, “You did it?”

    Lin Luo lowered her eyes.

He Wei hesitated, then said, “Yes.” She lowered her head. “I’m willing to accept any punishment from the hospital.”

The director said, “Such a simple matter.” She looked at Zhou Tianzui. “Isn’t that settled?”

Zhou Tianzui glanced at He Wei and didn’t speak. After a few seconds, she turned and left the office. Fu Shushu followed her out. Zhao Mingqi, seeing Zhou Tianzui, hurriedly walked over with his pen: “Dr. Zhou.”

Zhou Tianzui glanced at him and walked towards the ward.

Zhao Mingqi said, “Was it really He Wei who performed the rescue?”

    Zhou Tianzui didn’t speak.

Zhao Mingqi understood. Although there were no cameras in the emergency room, there were cameras in the corridor. He Wei and Lin Luo had indeed entered one after the other, so it was hard to say for sure who did it. It was a violation of hospital regulations, but because the rescue was timely and both mother and child were safe, it brought honor to the hospital. What was originally a hot potato had now become a valuable asset. If it was really He Wei who did it—

    It would be understandable.

Zhao Mingqi looked at Zhou Tianzui, not knowing how to broach the subject.

Zhou Tianzui was at a critical moment in her candidacy for deputy director. Whether this was a weight added to her side or a weight dragging her down depended on how she used it.

Zhou Tianzui entered the ward. Zeng Jing hadn’t woken up yet, lying pale as a sheet on the bed. She watched for a moment and then asked Zhao Mingqi, “When will she wake up?”

“The anesthesia will wear off soon.” Zhao Mingqi said, “I think it really was He Wei. She has no reason to lie about this. If the patient wakes up, wouldn’t it be clear? Why would she do that?”

Zhou Tianzui said, “What if the patient wasn’t fully conscious at the time?”

Zhao Mingqi opened his mouth, momentarily speechless. Seeing that Zhou Tianzui seemed to have made up her mind, he said, “Dr. Zhou, think it over carefully.”

Zhou Tianzui knew what he was talking about. Her face darkened. Walking out of the ward, she stood in the corridor and saw the TV hanging overhead. It was a small, square TV, one for every four wards. This one in front of her was broadcasting the Jindu TV midday news.

The host was familiar. After finishing the latest news about the explosion, the topic shifted to a live connection with the reporter on the scene.

    It was You Ruxu.

Zhou Tianzui looked at You Ruxu on the screen, hearing her say, “Regarding the fireworks explosion incident in our city today, the investigation has revealed…” You Ruxu on the screen looked serious and composed, her posture unwavering even with the wind blowing beside her, making her appear even more upright. After reporting the investigation, she said, “During the investigation, we also discovered another minor incident. Mr. Zhang’s wife, Ms. Zeng, was rushed to the hospital with heavy bleeding and received emergency treatment from an intern…”

Zhao Mingqi stepped forward: “This, this is our hospital.”

He was surprised: “Who leaked the information?”

Zhou Tianzui pursed her lips, her gaze darkening. She lowered her head and went to another ward.

You Ruxu finished the live connection and was changing her clothes. Outside the car, Chen Xiang asked, “Boss, when did Teacher You get this information?”

Shi Qi said, “I don’t know, she didn’t say.”

Before the live connection, she had held the draft: “What does this have to do with the explosion?”

You Ruxu, while adjusting her microphone, said, “It’s related. This is Zhang Xiaojie’s wife, Zeng Jing.”

Shi Qi looked at the draft: “Where did you dig up this information?”

“I saw it.” You Ruxu said, “I’ll handle this topic properly.”

Shi Qi watched her holding the draft, suddenly feeling that You Ruxu and herself weren’t actually that similar. During her first few years as a reporter, she had been impulsive, passionate, and reckless, but You Ruxu wasn’t. She should have realized it earlier. You Ruxu had meticulous plans. At this moment, Shi Qi suddenly felt that, while outsiders thought their choice of topic was doomed to fail, it was actually the opposite. You Ruxu would use these seemingly insignificant “small news stories” to make a splash!

What she wanted to do wasn’t just to uncover the truth, but also to set things right.

Looking at the car, Shi Qi suddenly smiled.

Chen Xiang didn’t understand: “Boss, what are you smiling about?”

Shi Qi said, “I’m smiling because our game-changer has arrived.”

Chen Xiang furrowed her brows. After changing her clothes and getting out of the car, You Ruxu didn’t see Shi Qi. She asked, “Where’s the boss?”

“She went back.” Chen Xiang said, “Teacher You, people online have started paying attention to the intern’s emergency rescue.”

    You Ruxu nodded.

Quite a few people were paying attention. Because Zhang Xiaojie was currently at the center of public opinion, anything related to him would become a hot topic. It wasn’t that no one wanted to dig up information about his wife, but before they could, the Jindu midday news had already reported it. Not only did they report it, but the question of whether interns could perform emergency rescues had also become a controversial topic.

[Why can’t they? Should they just watch the patient die?]

[Those who say they can’t, have you heard of CPR? The country is encouraging everyone to learn first aid.]

[No one is saying first aid is wrong, right? But what if the first aid fails? What if it worsens the condition? If you encounter an unreasonable family member, you could be sued for everything you have!]

[Isn’t there a difference between first aid by ordinary people and first aid by interns?]

[As a medical student, someone who wants to be a doctor in the future, I want to thank everyone in the comments section for your understanding. I also hope that my fellow medical students encounter understanding family members. We risk our future and our lives to save people. Everyone knows that the intern wouldn’t be wrong for not performing the rescue, but could she live with her conscience? A living person, two lives, if she didn’t perform the rescue, wouldn’t she be plagued by guilt for the rest of her life?]

You Ruxu turned off her phone screen and said to Chen Xiang, “Has Zeng Jing woken up?”

Chen Xiang said, “Not yet, but the baby is born, both mother and child are safe.”

    You Ruxu said, “I know.”

She packed her things. Chen Xiang asked, “Teacher You, where are you going?”

You Ruxu said, “I’m going back to the factory. You can go back to the station.”

Chen Xiang was worried about her going alone. You Ruxu said, “It’s okay.”

She took a taxi and left.

Chen Xiang could only watch her leave, then returned to the station.

You Ruxu sat in the taxi, listening to the driver’s occasional chatter. She looked down, watching the minutes tick by. Finally, she found Zhou Tianzui on WeChat and typed: [Working overtime tonight?]

Zhou Tianzui sat in her office. The phone screen lit up, then went dark. She sat quietly for a long time. This news report had diverted some of the attention. Several newspapers had already called, wanting to interview the intern. Although they had declined for now, this was a good opportunity to promote the hospital, and the higher-ups would soon give in.

For her, the choice became even more difficult.

A doctor poked their head in through the door: “Dr. Zhou, we won’t schedule you for duty tonight. Go home and rest early.”

Zhou Tianzui looked at her: “Okay, I understand.”

He Wei passed by her door, glanced inside, and met Zhou Tianzui’s gaze. She shuddered and left.

Zhou Tianzui didn’t call her until the end of her shift. He Wei felt uneasy, her heart in her throat. She wasn’t nervous around Lin Luo, but whenever she saw Zhou Tianzui, her hands and feet turned cold. Only after hearing that Zhou Tianzui had left work did she breathe a sigh of relief.

Someone nearby said, “He Wei, you did a good job this time.”

    “Well done, He Wei.”

She smiled faintly, but thinking of Zhou Tianzui’s expression, her smile faded, and she hurriedly left the hospital.

You Ruxu stayed near the explosion site all afternoon, chatting with the security guard for a long time, and wandering around the area. Only when the sky turned dark did she glance at her phone. Zhou Tianzui hadn’t replied to her message.

    She must be angry, right?

You Ruxu arrived at the entrance of the residential complex after work and bought a box of Zhou Tianzui’s favorite crispy pastries. She guessed Zhou Tianzui was busy today and probably hadn’t returned yet. Unexpectedly, when she opened the door, she saw someone sitting on the sofa. This scene overlapped with the night they first got together. You Ruxu stood still. Zhou Tianzui turned around: “Overtime?”

You Ruxu said, “I went to the scene. You didn’t work overtime today?”

Zhou Tianzui stood up and walked towards her. The living room light wasn’t on, only the moonlight shone in. Zhou Tianzui grabbed You Ruxu’s hand as she reached for the light switch. Zhou Tianzui asked, “Do you want me to work overtime?”

    You Ruxu said, “I…”

“I can.” She suddenly wrapped her arms around You Ruxu’s waist. The person who was always so composed on screen was now pressed against her, their breaths mingling. The crispy pastries in You Ruxu’s hand fell onto the shoe cabinet with a thud. Zhou Tianzui held her hands behind her back, forcing You Ruxu to lean forward. Zhou Tianzui’s knee pressed between her legs, her voice close to You Ruxu’s ear, her breath warm against her skin. Zhou Tianzui said, “A Ran, I’m starting my overtime now.”

You Ruxu let out a soft gasp and turned her head away.

    In full view of everyone.

Zhou Tianzui: A Ran, working overtime today?
    You Ruxu: …

    Chapter 11: The Draft

You Ruxu returned to the station two hours later. A meeting was about to start, and the midday news team was consolidating the information they had gathered. As she entered the meeting room, she heard others discussing, “The focus should still be on Zhang Xiaojie. I suggest leaving a few more people at the hospital, to get a first-hand account when he wakes up.”

“I think Zhang Xiaojie’s relationship with the boss is also worth investigating.”

“Right now, Zhang Xiaojie has the highest search index. I also think the focus should be on him, and his family. We can look for clues there.”

    You Ruxu walked in.

The evening news team fell silent. Her previous big news story, the collaboration with CCTV, had embarrassed them. Now, seeing her, they felt awkward. The head of the morning news team said, “Xiao Xu, do you have any important leads?”

You Ruxu said, “I interviewed Zhang Xiaojie’s colleagues, but there haven’t been any major developments so far.”

The head nodded and turned on the projector, displaying real-time search trends and some online comments. Clicking the mouse, she analyzed, “The internet is very developed now, any information can be made public in seconds. For example, what Xiao Xu just mentioned about interviewing colleagues, many colleagues have already come forward with information.”

You Ruxu looked at the screen.

[Zhang Xiaojie is my colleague, he’s not a very good person.]

[Zhang Xiaojie? I know him. He only got into the factory through connections. His relationships are going to be the death of him!]

[Zhang Xiaojie is alright, isn’t he?]

The head said, “These are the ones with high click-through rates and discussion volume. Of course, there are many fake ones, people trying to muddy the waters.”

A reporter raised their hand: “Boss, actually, I think besides Zhang Xiaojie, Chen Mo also has a high search index. This is also good material for a news story. Why don’t we start with Chen Mo?”

Chen Mo’s story was tragic enough and could lead to many discussion points. Starting with his family and his spirit of self-sacrifice would be enough to ignite public interest. The head of the morning news team nodded.

You Ruxu raised her hand. After being acknowledged, she stood up: “I think we should focus on the incident itself, focusing on investigating the explosion, not the individuals.”

Hearing her words, everyone exchanged glances. A few people from the evening news team snickered.

Even if You Ruxu had landed a big news story before, so what? She still couldn’t grasp the key points. Maybe that previous news story was just a fluke.

The head of the morning news team coughed lightly: “Alright then, Team 1 will focus on investigating Zhang Xiaojie, Team 3 will focus on Chen Mo, and Team 2—” She looked at You Ruxu, “Will investigate the explosion itself.”

“All information is to be shared, no withholding, no delays!”

Before You Ruxu even left the meeting room, she heard Chen Xiang say, “It’s over, will the boss be angry?”

Out of the three topics, You Ruxu had again chosen the one with the least potential for discussion. Everyone’s attention was now on Zhang Xiaojie, every news outlet scrambling to dig up every little detail. Only You Ruxu had given up such a hot topic to investigate the incident itself. And the incident itself didn’t need investigating, the police would investigate and clarify the situation.

    She said, “Teacher You…”

You Ruxu said, “I’ll talk to the boss.”

She lowered her head and walked out of the meeting room. Before she even reached her office, she received a call from Shi Qi: “What have you done?”

You Ruxu said, “I think we should focus on the explosion itself first.”

“You!” Shi Qi took a deep breath, trying her best not to explode right there in the hospital. She said, “Are you crazy?” She closed her eyes. How could she forget You Ruxu’s stubbornness, never considering the popularity of a topic? She thought that after the last incident, You Ruxu would have learned what the best choice was, but she was still the same.

“Go and report it to me immediately, we’re investigating Zhang Xiaojie!” Shi Qi said. You Ruxu retorted, “If we investigate the truth of the matter, we can naturally investigate Zhang Xiaojie as well.”

“Is that the same?” Shi Qi said, “The results of our investigation, after being shared, will be reported first-hand by the morning news team! What if we get an exclusive interview? Can you bear the consequences?”

    You Ruxu said, “I can…”

“You can’t!” Shi Qi said, “You Ruxu! Wake up! Do you know how important exclusive news is to us? Do you know that we have not only hosts, but also so many people behind the scenes? Do you know how much effort everyone puts into a single news story? Do you know that there will be an evaluation at the end of the year, and if we’re always ranked C, how many colleagues we’ll lose? Not just you, but maybe me too!”

You Ruxu listened to her words in silence for a few seconds and said, “I know, I’m not being high-minded. I know what it takes to get an exclusive news story, but that’s not a reason for us to disregard the truth and desperately manufacture hot topics for the sake of popularity.” Her tone was calm. “If we do that, what’s the difference between us and those online marketing accounts that only care about generating buzz?”

She said, “There are many suspicious points in this explosion case. Before the case is clear, what we should do is not look at anyone with prejudice and convict them. That’s not what a reporter should do.”

Shi Qi gripped her phone tightly: “Then what do you think a reporter should do?”

You Ruxu said, “Find out the truth and report it truthfully.”

Shi Qi didn’t speak for a long time. There was noise on the other end of the line. She said, “We’ll talk when we meet.”

You Ruxu remained silent and hung up the phone.

The midday news team had already started focusing on the incident. You Ruxu went to the scene again. Besides the wailing people and the many freelance media personnel and reporters filming, others avoided the place. The fire had been extinguished, but for safety reasons, the warehouse area was still cordoned off. You Ruxu, wearing her press badge, walked in and saw a few police officers questioning people nearby. She stood to the side, and a police officer recognized her: “Reporter You.”

    She smiled: “Captain Zhou.”

Captain Zhou said, “The area’s sealed off, you can’t go in.”

You Ruxu said, “I’ll just take a look around here.” She took a few photos of the surrounding area, then looked at Captain Zhou: “Are you going back to the station soon?”

Captain Zhou nodded: “We’ll go back after we’re done here.”

You Ruxu said, “Can I hitch a ride?”

Captain Zhou was a few years older than her, her long hair always tied up in her cap, looking valiant and heroic, her voice strong: “Sure, didn’t drive today?”

You Ruxu said, “My car is parked at the company.”

She had come with Chen Xiang. Chen Xiang wanted to go to the hospital and had given her a ride. You Ruxu had planned to take a taxi to the police station later, and now it just so happened they could go together. On the way, a young police officer sitting in the front turned around and said, “Captain Zhou, it seems to be pretty much the same as what Mr. Zhao said.”

You Ruxu looked at him: “What did Mr. Zhao say?”

Her beauty was dazzling, even without makeup. Her skin was naturally fair, her features well-defined, with a cool demeanor at first glance, but her smiling eyes miraculously melted the coldness. The young police officer blinked when he heard her question. Captain Zhou said, “See, I told you to transfer to our interrogation unit. You don’t even need to interrogate, and they’ll confess everything.”

The young police officer blushed. He turned back around, facing the road ahead.

Captain Zhou said, “Let me make it clear in advance. What I can tell the media, I won’t hide, but what I can’t reveal yet, I won’t say.”

You Ruxu said, “I know.” Her voice was very pleasant. The young police officer, who had turned around, couldn’t see her, but hearing her voice, his face turned even redder. He scratched his neck, which was also burning hot.

Captain Zhou looked at the young man in front, shaking her head in exasperation. But fortunately, he hadn’t blurted out anything, a bit better than his senior.

After arriving at the police station, You Ruxu followed Captain Zhou into her office. The young police officer who had been sitting in the front just sat down when someone beside him said, “Your face is as red as a baboon’s butt. You came with Reporter You just now, didn’t you?”

The young police officer was surprised: “How did you know?”

“Isn’t it obvious?” She laughed. “The first time I talked to her, I didn’t even dare to look her in the eyes.”

How could someone be so beautiful? So beautiful, and so heroic, it made one’s heart incapable of any disrespect. She had almost blurted something out earlier, thankfully the captain stopped her.

You Ruxu sat in the office and said, “When can I interview Mr. Zhao?”

Captain Zhou said, “After we’ve finished collecting evidence.”

You Ruxu nodded: “Is Zhang Xiaojie the suspect?”

    Captain Zhou smiled at her.

You Ruxu asked: “Is Zhang Xiaojie related to Mr. Zhao?”

    Captain Zhou didn’t speak.

You Ruxu said, “What about the progress on the illegal fireworks? You can at least tell me about that, right?”

Captain Zhou said, “It’s not that I can’t say anything, it’s that it’s difficult to say…”

She sighed, looking at You Ruxu. You Ruxu understood somewhat. There hadn’t been any substantial progress on the illegal fireworks case, and now, with the explosion, it was even more difficult to find evidence. If Mr. Zhao insisted he had nothing to do with it, it would take a while to find evidence.

She nodded, taking notes. Captain Zhou looked at her: “Everyone outside is busy circling around Zhang Xiaojie, why didn’t you go?”

You Ruxu said, “My colleague is there.”

Just then, her phone rang. Her “colleague” Shi Qi, who was at Zhang Xiaojie’s side, asked, “Where are you?”

You Ruxu said, “I’m at the police station.”

“Come to the hospital entrance after you’re done.” Shi Qi said concisely and hung up. You Ruxu glanced at her phone screen, closed her notebook, and said, “Then I’ll be going.”

Captain Zhou said, “Let’s go, I’ll see you out.”

She followed You Ruxu out of the office.

They walked out one after the other. The two young police officers outside kept their eyes glued to You Ruxu, only snapping back to reality after she left. You Ruxu took a taxi to the hospital. Shi Qi was buying bread at the entrance. Seeing her approach, she handed her one: “Want some?”

You Ruxu shook her head: “I’m not hungry yet.”

Shi Qi said, “Don’t mind my attitude earlier, it’s not easy for anyone.”

You Ruxu said, “You have your considerations, it’s my fault for not discussing my choice with you beforehand.”

She said, “Sometimes I think you’re really similar to how I was when I first became a reporter.” Back then, she was also full of passion, running around to investigate incidents, feeling extremely gratified when she uncovered the truth, and seeing the grateful eyes of those who had been wronged, there was nothing more rewarding.

When had she been worn down by time, starting to consider other things? Performance, ratings, hot topics, explosive news, she considered every aspect, but only missed one thing: the truth.

Find out the truth and report it truthfully.

These eight words were what she had given You Ruxu on her first day at the station.

You Ruxu looked at her and said, “I’ll go change first. I have a live broadcast with the station in half an hour. This is the draft I prepared.”

She handed the draft she brought to Shi Qi and walked towards her car nearby. Shi Qi looked down at the draft behind her, thinking it was related to the explosion, but found it was about something else entirely.

    Chapter 10: Investigation

He Wei and the other newcomer looked out upon hearing the noise and also saw You Ruxu. He Wei’s eyes lit up: “Teacher You.”

You Ruxu looked at Zhou Tianzui, the atmosphere falling silent for a moment.

Zhou Tianzui asked the man, “Who let you in here?” Her face was dark, her tone cold. She looked at him: “What did you take pictures of?” The man said, “Nothing.”

He tried to leave as he spoke. Zhou Tianzui said, “Stop!”

You Ruxu, being closer, subconsciously grabbed the man’s wrist. Reporters often encountered special situations, so the station regularly arranged combat or self-defense training for them. Due to her upbringing, You Ruxu had trained with her relatives and had no problem restraining someone. The man’s wrist hurt as soon as she grabbed it. He looked at You Ruxu: “What are you doing?!”

Zhou Tianzui walked over to him and picked up the camera. It didn’t look like a professional camera. Zhou Tianzui asked, “Which news outlet are you from?”

The man stiffened his neck: “None of your business. I have the right to report on any news.”

“Right?” Zhou Tianzui said, “If you don’t know the rights of a reporter, you can ask Teacher You here. Don’t tarnish the reputation of reporters and bring shame to the profession.”

The man clearly wasn’t a reporter, he wasn’t even wearing a press badge.

She said, “This room is off-limits to non-hospital personnel. Moreover, you just took pictures without our consent. We can sue you!”

The man’s arrogance diminished somewhat, and he said, “Then I’ll just delete them.”

Zhou Tianzui stood beside him, watching as he deleted the photos from the camera. The man turned to leave, but Zhou Tianzui took the camera from him, went back, found slot 2, opened it, and permanently deleted the photos.

This camera was new, with two SD card slots. It could be set to automatically save to both cards. The man had just deleted the photos from slot 1.

Zhou Tianzui returned the card to the man, his face dark.

He glanced at Zhou Tianzui and turned to leave.

You Ruxu stood where she was. Zhou Tianzui asked, “Why are you here?”

Her tone was softer than when she spoke to the man. You Ruxu said, “I followed him in.”

    Zhou Tianzui nodded.

He Wei looked at You Ruxu and bit her lip, greeting her: “Teacher You.”

You Ruxu looked at her, her gaze indifferent, nodding slightly. He Wei wanted to say more, but Zhou Tianzui’s cold voice came: “Both of you go inside first.”

He Wei wanted to steal a few more glances, but with one look from Zhou Tianzui, she immediately lowered her head and went into the inner room.

You Ruxu looked at their backs for a few seconds, then at Zhou Tianzui, and said, “I have to go too.”

The people she contacted were still waiting for her at the shop, so she couldn’t stay long. Seeing her turn to leave, Zhou Tianzui asked, “Did you go into the explosion site?”

You Ruxu shook her head: “Not yet, I can’t go in for now.”

Zhou Tianzui’s expression relaxed a little.

It was quiet outside. You Ruxu went directly to the area near the factory after leaving the hospital. The police cordon was still in place, but there were far fewer people than in the morning, with almost no one entering. Someone was guarding the entrance. She walked directly to a nearby breakfast shop and saw two young people sitting inside, probably recent graduates, who looked like a couple. Before You Ruxu approached, she heard them discussing the explosion.

“I can’t believe he’s like that. He seemed so honest usually.”

“I don’t know what he was thinking. Did he think destroying the evidence would make it disappear?” The man’s voice was laced with complaint. “Now that such a big incident has happened, we can’t go to work. I don’t know how long we’ll be off.”

“We’re lucky. Didn’t you see Old Dou and the others come out covered in blood? I heard Chen Mo…”

The topic hit a nerve with both of them. They were both grateful to be alive and worried about the potential job loss. It was hard to say which emotion was stronger. You Ruxu sat opposite them and greeted them: “Hello, I’m…”

“I know, Reporter You.” The girl said, “I often watch your news reports.”

You Ruxu said, “Yes, that’s me.”

The girl asked, “Are you here to find out what happened? But we don’t know much.”

You Ruxu said, “Don’t be nervous, I just want to know your impression of Zhang Xiaojie.”

“Zhang Xiaojie?” The girl said, “I’m in HR, so I haven’t interacted with him much. My boyfriend works in the warehouse, he knows more than I do.”

The man nodded: “He’s been with the company for more than three years. He’s always been hardworking, doesn’t talk much, but if anyone needs help, he’s always there. He always seemed like such an honest person. I don’t know why…”

The girl said, “I heard he’s related to Mr. Zhao.”

“Mr. Zhao?” You Ruxu asked, “Has Mr. Zhao returned?”

The girl said, “He’s already gone to the police station to assist with the investigation.”

You Ruxu nodded, looked at the two, and asked, “Do you also know Chen Mo?”

“Yes.” The man’s eyes reddened. “Chen Mo was our classmate.”

You Ruxu made a note of it.

The girl said, “Chen Mo’s family wasn’t well-off. His parents were both ill and couldn’t work, so he was the sole breadwinner. Actually, Chen Mo wanted to go to a bigger city, but he couldn’t leave his parents, so he came back after graduation.”

Her tone was filled with regret and sympathy.

“Chen Mo was also a hard worker.” The man said, “We’re both responsible for warehouse receiving and shipping. Every morning, Chen Mo was the first to arrive and the last to leave. His family lives nearby, he always said he would work overtime whenever he could, as his family depended on him.”

The girl continued, “Actually, he could have continued his studies after graduation. His professor also hoped he would stay at the university, but he still came back. He left early and returned late every day. Sometimes I think, maybe it was because he wanted to escape but couldn’t…”

The man chuckled softly: “Don’t talk nonsense.”

“How is that nonsense?!” The girl said, “Chen Mo even had a fight with his father two months ago, saying he couldn’t take it anymore.”

The man lowered his head: “He’s gone now, what’s the point of talking about this?”

“What do you mean there’s no point?” The girl’s eyes reddened. “Just because he’s gone, he’s gone? We can’t even reminisce? He suffered so much during his lifetime, and we can’t even mention it?”

“Suffering? No one wants to be born into a family like that, and it’s not easy for parents to raise their children. How is that suffering?”

“That’s not the suffering I’m talking about! I’m saying it’s a pity that he could have had a better future! What do you mean?!” The girl started arguing with the man.

You Ruxu, looking at the arguing couple, said, “Please calm down.”

The girl glared at the man: “You have no empathy at all, did a dog eat your conscience?”

“You’re the one whose conscience was eaten by a dog!” The man said, “If you felt so sorry for him, why didn’t you lend him money last year when his mother needed surgery and we all chipped in?”

“I didn’t have any money at the time!” The girl bristled like a cat, her voice rising. “So it’s my fault now? Should I have sold my blood and kidneys to lend him money?”

The man’s face flushed: “I didn’t say that!”

You Ruxu noted down their words and said, “Thank you both for your cooperation with the interview.”

The girl finally swallowed her words. She had gotten carried away with the argument and almost forgotten about You Ruxu. She said, “Sorry, we didn’t control our emotions very well today.”

She nudged the man with her elbow.

The man also said, “Sorry, Reporter You, we—it’s just that with Chen Mo gone, we—”

You Ruxu said, “I understand. Thank you both very much.”

The girl said, “Actually, we didn’t really help much. Is our factory going to close down?”

You Ruxu said, “The police are still investigating the specific situation. They should notify you of the results.”

Her voice was soft and gentle, and with her smiling eyes, she was very calming. The girl’s emotions stabilized, and she felt she hadn’t performed well earlier, so she actively tried to help You Ruxu. You Ruxu smiled: “Have you had breakfast yet?”

The man scratched his head and gave a dry laugh.

They usually had breakfast at the factory. With such a big incident today, they hadn’t had time to eat yet. Now, reminded by You Ruxu, they realized they were hungry. You Ruxu smiled: “I’ll treat you.”

The girl quickly waved her hand: “No, no need.”

You Ruxu said, “It’s okay, I took up your time, I’m sorry.”

The girl was embarrassed: “Actually, we didn’t really help, and we even made a scene.” She looked at You Ruxu: “If you have any further questions, you can call me directly.”

    You Ruxu nodded: “Thank you.”

Her phone rang. You Ruxu smiled at the two and answered the call. Shi Qi said, “Zhang Xiaojie is out of surgery.”

You Ruxu asked, “Is he awake?”

“No.” Shi Qi said, “He’s being transferred to the observation room. He hasn’t regained consciousness yet. How’s the situation on your end?”

You Ruxu said, “No major issues.” She said, “I’ll be back soon.”

Shi Qi said, “There’s a lot of controversy online about this incident. Don’t come back to the hospital, come directly to the station for a meeting. I’ll send you all the information.”

    You Ruxu said, “I understand.”

She hung up and saw the news notifications, all about the explosion today. It was currently the most talked-about event online. You Ruxu clicked on the news page and saw many comments from netizens.

[Although I don’t know the casualty figures yet, I hope everyone is okay.]

[I heard the culprit is fine, but a university student died on the spot in the warehouse, a recent graduate, only worked for a few years.]

[I know him, he was my classmate, a really good guy. He had excellent grades in school and went back to his hometown to take care of his parents. Filial and polite. I was stunned when I saw the news, I couldn’t believe such a good person was gone. The culprit is the warehouse manager, right?]

[I’ll be blunt! I don’t care about the fireworks factory, I only care about when that manager will die!]

[I also care about when the manager will die!]

[The manager should die! Even dying a hundred times wouldn’t be enough!]

[Please update us on the progress! And announce the manager’s death along with it, thanks!]

You Ruxu scrolled through several hot news items. The top comments were all filled with such radical remarks, many already tagging the Jindu police and the capital police, urging them to release the results quickly. You Ruxu pursed her lips, her finger resting on the phone screen, silent for a moment.

    Chapter 9: Controversy

When You Ruxu arrived at the explosion site, rows of yellow warning lines were in place. Shi Qi was standing in the crowd, countless reporters from various newspapers jostling to get closer. Many freelance media personnel were there too, some live streaming, also stuck at the edge, all wanting to capture some exclusive news. Some were even climbing on others’ shoulders. You Ruxu walked over. Shi Qi said, “We can’t get anything here. We’ll go to the hospital later.”

Her tone was hurried. Chen Xiang was also beside her, along with a few other colleagues from the midday news team. At this moment, there was no rivalry. In the presence of other TV stations, they were one team.

You Ruxu asked, “What’s the situation?”

“I heard they produced a batch of fireworks that didn’t meet standards and were starting to investigate. This morning, the warehouse manager wanted to destroy them in advance, but unexpectedly, it triggered an explosion.” Chen Xiang said, “It was just as people were starting work. The employees didn’t even know what was happening when it exploded.”

Preliminary estimates indicated at least forty or fifty injured employees, possibly more.

This fireworks factory was the largest in Jindu, so there were many employees. Fortunately, it was morning, and many employees hadn’t arrived yet, otherwise, there would have been more casualties.

You Ruxu watched as people were carried out, medical staff rushing in and out. The sirens of fire trucks and ambulances blared incessantly. She asked, “Can we go inside?”

“It’s still burning.” Chen Xiang shook her head, “Probably can’t go in.”

You Ruxu nodded and heard a heart-wrenching cry from nearby: “Xiao Chen! Xiao Chen! My son!” The crying was heartbreaking. Chen Xiang said, “That’s a victim’s family member. Their house is right next to it, closest to the explosion site. He died on the spot.”

Camera flashes went off, focusing on the middle-aged woman and man. The woman was sobbing uncontrollably. The man was silent, as if he had lost his soul, not even trying to comfort the woman. The woman knelt on the ground, crying her heart out. A reporter went up: “Excuse me, are you Chen Mo’s parents?”

“Excuse me, did Chen Mo die on the spot?”

    “Hello…”

It was like rubbing salt in the wound. Hearing these questions, the woman’s eyes rolled back, and she fainted, being carried onto a nearby vehicle. The man quickly followed. The scene was chaotic, filled with all sorts of noises, the arriving family members, reporters from various TV stations and newspapers. You Ruxu smelled the burning, her ears assaulted by the escalating noise. Shi Qi said, “Team 3 stay here, let’s go to the hospital.”

Team 3 was the evening news team. The morning news was Team 1, and they were Team 2.

You Ruxu looked at the rising black smoke. Shi Qi called out, “Xiao Xu?”

She came back to her senses: “Coming.”

You Ruxu quickly caught up with Shi Qi and rushed to the hospital. The hospital’s emergency room was full of patients, every department extremely busy. Those with minor injuries were bandaged first, while those with severe injuries were immediately taken into surgery. Zhou Tianzui was also pulled into the emergency room to help, along with He Wei and Lin Luo. He Wei had never seen such a scene. It was like a TV drama, the injured being brought in batch after batch. Some family members of the victims had also suffered breakdowns and were sent to the hospital. The emergency room was packed with people, and it was difficult for her to even turn around. Lin Luo, who came in with her, pulled her aside: “He Wei, let’s help too.”

“How can you help?” He Wei said, “Do you even know what’s going on?”

    Lin Luo held back.

She didn’t dare argue with He Wei and could only help guide patients to the different departments. Two people rushed in through the main entrance: “Doctor! Doctor, come quickly! This pregnant woman is hemorrhaging!”

The voice was urgent, but in this environment, it was completely drowned out. Seeing this scene, He Wei thought of Zhou Tianzui and quickly pulled someone nearby: “Where’s Dr. Zhou?”

“In the operating room!” The nurse quickly replied. He Wei asked again, “Where’s Dr. Fu?”

“They’re all in the operating room!”

Hearing about the hemorrhage, the nurse panicked: “I’ll go get Dr. Zhou!”

    He Wei said, “I’ll go!”

As she spoke, she saw Lin Luo following the pregnant woman into an empty emergency room.

Beads of sweat formed on Zhou Tianzui’s forehead. She hadn’t had a moment’s rest since arriving at the hospital, performing surgeries one after another. This fireworks factory had been around for many years, and people from the surrounding area worked there. Many were newly married and pregnant. Not only the obstetrics and gynecology department, but also the surgery, internal medicine, and pediatrics departments had to gather to discuss surgical plans. As soon as one surgery ended, another one immediately followed.

She didn’t stop for a moment, not even having time to check the time, her hands constantly moving. Her assistant wiped the sweat from her forehead.

This was the chaotic scene You Ruxu saw when she arrived at the hospital.

She heard Shi Qi ask, “Where’s Zhang Xiaojie?”

The nurse was too busy to look up: “Excuse me, please make way, make way.”

Shi Qi asked again, “Hello, where’s Zhang Xiaojie?”

“Zhang Xiaojie? Are you a family member?” The nurse was constantly on the move, typing on the computer. Shi Qi said, “Yes.”

The nurse said, “Zhang Xiaojie is still in surgery.”

    “In Emergency Room 3.”

Hearing this, the reporters behind Shi Qi immediately rushed forward. Shi Qi hadn’t brought a camera and had taken off her press badge before arriving. She put it back on now and said, “When Zhang Xiaojie comes out, whether he’s conscious or not, take pictures first. If he’s conscious, we’ll try to get a first-hand report.”

You Ruxu stood behind her and said, “I know.”

Emergency carts were constantly being pushed back and forth beside her. The spacious emergency room felt cramped, filled with the smell of blood and the strong scent of disinfectant. You Ruxu’s expression was serious as she followed Shi Qi to the door of Emergency Room 3. The doctors went in and out several times. She heard someone nearby on the phone: “What? His wife is also at the hospital? About to give birth?”

He didn’t seem like a reporter, more like a freelance media person.

    “What’s her name?”

Hearing the conversation, You Ruxu turned her head and exchanged a glance with Shi Qi. Shi Qi said, “Follow him.”

She lowered her head and quickly followed the man to the nurse’s station. The man avoided the crowd and went to the bathroom. You Ruxu couldn’t help but ask the nurse, “Hello, has a pregnant woman been admitted recently? About to give birth.”

The nurse didn’t look up: “Several. Who are you looking for?”

You Ruxu looked at the message on her phone: “Zeng Jing.”

“Let me check.” The nurse checked the computer records and said, “No.”

    You Ruxu frowned.

The nurse asked another nurse, “Is there a Zeng Jing in the records?”

“Zeng Jing?” The nurse handed over the record sheet, “Look for yourself, I need to find Dr. Zhao.”

The record sheet wouldn’t normally be shown to outsiders, but today’s situation was special. There were too many people injured in the explosion, and family members were making a fuss because they couldn’t find their loved ones. So, the record sheet of those admitted today was placed on the counter, allowing family members to find which ward or emergency room their relatives were in and where to pay the fees. You Ruxu looked down, checking twice, but didn’t see Zeng Jing’s name. Her brows furrowed.

You Ruxu asked, “Are the names of everyone admitted here listed here?”

“All the current records are here.” As the nurse finished speaking, her phone rang. She held the phone between her ear and shoulder, typing, her hands and mind constantly working. You Ruxu checked one last time, and only after confirming there was no Zeng Jing’s name did she walk back.

Shi Qi was surprised to see her return: “Did you find her?”

“No.” You Ruxu said, “The hospital has no record of her.”

“Could she have been sent to another hospital?” Shi Qi said, “I’ll ask them to check again.”

There were a few more reporters at the door of Emergency Room 3, all watching inside. Two of them paced back and forth. You Ruxu looked down at her messages, hearing the familiar cries and shouts: “You damned murderer! Zhang Xiaojie, you should be dead! Why wasn’t it you who died! Why!”

    It was Chen Mo’s mother.

You Ruxu saw the camera flashes directed at her, the focus immediately shifting to her. Shi Qi also stood beside her. Chen Mo’s mother had been brought in unconscious. When she woke up, she asked for Zhang Xiaojie and was told he was still in surgery. Overwhelmed with anger, she immediately came to bang on the door.

“Excuse me, please keep your voice down.” The nurse tried to stop her. The woman’s tears flowed uncontrollably: “Keep my voice down? Will Zhang Xiaojie hear me if I keep my voice down? Zhang Xiaojie, can you hear me? You should be dead! You should be dead! Why are you alive! Why are you alive! My son is dead, he just graduated from university, he’d only been working for two years, he wasn’t even married yet…”

The woman sobbed uncontrollably, her grief moving everyone present. Anyone encountering such a thing would find it impossible to remain calm. A son just graduated from university, at the prime of his life, no parent could bear such a sudden loss.

Thinking of how he had been perfectly fine, saying goodbye to his family before going to work, and now, only a few hours later, they could only see his cold body, everyone present was silent. The woman’s voice wasn’t shrill, but the emotions she expressed were deeply moving.

The nurse still wanted to stop her, but another nurse pulled her aside and said, “Let Dr. Zhao handle it.”

Today was too busy, too chaotic, everyone was overwhelmed. Zhang Xiaojie was still in surgery, and several other family members of the victims had arrived, cursing at Zhang Xiaojie. You Ruxu said, “I’m going out for a bit.”

    Shi Qi nodded.

You Ruxu found some fireworks factory employees who hadn’t started their shift yet, hoping to learn about Zhang Xiaojie’s character from them. Chen Xiang helped her contact a few people. As You Ruxu was walking out, she suddenly saw a man, the one who had answered the phone and said Zhang Xiaojie’s wife was also in the hospital. He was looking at his phone while looking around, then entered a nearby elevator. You Ruxu thought for a few seconds and followed him.

The man went up to the third floor. You Ruxu followed behind. It was quieter up here, not as noisy, with far fewer people. The man pushed open a door and went in. You Ruxu frowned, seeing a sign on the door that read “Hospital Staff Only.” Her brows furrowed. She hesitated for a few seconds, then followed him inside.

Inside, there was a smaller room, which seemed to be a lounge for doctors. White coats hung on the wall. The door was half-open, and she heard a familiar voice.

“Who performed the emergency treatment on the patient?” The voice was so familiar that You Ruxu immediately recognized it as Zhou Tianzui’s.

Zhou Tianzui looked sternly at the two people in front of her.

He Wei glanced at the person beside her and said, “I did.”

You Ruxu heard a click. The man in front hadn’t turned off the sound on his phone. Hearing the noise, Zhou Tianzui immediately walked to the door, opened it, and saw You Ruxu standing outside.

    Chapter 8: Explosion

When You Ruxu woke up the next day, her whole body ached, her throat the most. She sat up with difficulty and saw Zhou Tianzui still lying beside her. Zhou Tianzui was a light sleeper; usually, she would wake up at the slightest movement. Today, even though You Ruxu had sat up, Zhou Tianzui didn’t wake. You Ruxu looked down at her. Zhou Tianzui was only quiet when she was asleep. Usually, every word she uttered was a thorn. Thinking of their conversation last night, You Ruxu lowered her eyes. The curtains were tightly drawn, blocking out the light. She got out of bed, put on a nightgown, stood quietly by the window for several minutes, and finally went into the bathroom.

The moment the door closed, Zhou Tianzui woke up. Her hand subconsciously reached out to the side, but it was empty and cold. She opened her eyes, turned to look at the living room, and heard the sound of running water from the bathroom. Zhou Tianzui got out of bed, went to the kitchen, opened the refrigerator, and saw the honey jar next to it.

When You Ruxu came out of the bathroom, she saw Zhou Tianzui in the kitchen. She walked over and said, “You’re awake.”

Her voice was a little hoarse, not from last night’s activities, but from the hangover. Zhou Tianzui pushed the glass on the table towards her and said, “Drink it.”

    Her tone was indifferent.

You Ruxu turned to look at her. Zhou Tianzui was wearing pajamas, her hair slightly messy, her head lowered as she busied herself. Her expression was unreadable. You Ruxu picked up the glass. It was warm water, and she took a sip. Sweet, with honey.

It was excellent for both hangovers and soothing a sore throat. She knew this because Zhou Tianzui had told her. Zhou Tianzui didn’t drink alcohol. Due to her profession, she never touched cigarettes or alcohol. Later, there was a period when You Ruxu had to frequent bars and drink for a news story, and the next day, Zhou Tianzui would prepare these for her.

Zhou Tianzui also wouldn’t let her take hangover pills.

“If there are other ways, don’t take medicine.” Back then, Zhou Tianzui’s attitude was also cold, just like now. You Ruxu realized that her bad temper hadn’t changed over the years.

But what she did and what she said were two different things.

You Ruxu lowered her head, touched the rim of the glass, and softly called, “Zhou Tianzui.”

Zhou Tianzui’s busy hands paused, and she glanced sideways.

Looking at her thin lips, You Ruxu suddenly had a ridiculous thought: it would be nice if she couldn’t speak. Perhaps this thought was too ridiculous, and You Ruxu couldn’t help but laugh, her eyes curving into crescents. She must have been really drunk last night, for the alcohol to still affect her today.

Zhou Tianzui quietly watched her laugh.

You Ruxu looked beautiful when she smiled. She had naturally smiling eyes, but usually, she was too serious and formal, so those smiling eyes also carried a cool chill. But when she smiled, it was different, like a beautiful painting with a bold stroke of color added, just the right amount of brightness and vibrancy, three times more beautiful than anyone Zhou Tianzui had ever seen.

    And even more captivating.

The name “Zhou Tianzui,” spoken like that, tugged at her heartstrings, swaying along with her heartbeat.

She closed her eyes, lowered her gaze to look at You Ruxu. You Ruxu was still holding the glass, and she took another sip, saying, “It’s nothing.”

She added, “I had a dream last night.”

Zhou Tianzui looked at her: “What dream?”

You Ruxu said, “I dreamt that you couldn’t speak.”

Zhou Tianzui looked at her and said, “That’s a pity.” Then she lowered her eyes and said faintly, “Dreams are the opposite of reality.”

You Ruxu held the glass and didn’t speak anymore.

Zhou Tianzui brushed past her to go to the bathroom to wash up. The milk was still in the pot in the kitchen. When she finished washing up, she saw You Ruxu place two glasses of milk on the table, along with toasted bread, fried eggs, and a grilled sausage, a simple sandwich that Zhou Tianzui had taught You Ruxu how to make.

Actually, You Ruxu hadn’t told Zhou Tianzui that she already knew how to make it, from a very young age.

They ate breakfast slowly. Sometimes, when they weren’t too busy, they would go downstairs for a walk before work. You Ruxu had also thought about getting a dog because Zhou Tianzui liked them very much. There used to be a stray dog at the intersection near their apartment, and she had seen Zhou Tianzui feeding it several times. Later, the stray dog was taken away by someone else, and Zhou Tianzui stood there for a long time. She asked Zhou Tianzui, “Should we get one too?”

Zhou Tianzui turned to look at her and said, “I had one when I was young.”

    You Ruxu asked, “And then?”

Zhou Tianzui said, “It was my birthday present from my father. It was only two months old when it came to our house. I often secretly fed it milk. My dad said there was no need, that it needed to eat more food to grow up. Later, when it grew up, I was afraid it would leave me, so I looked up how long a dog could live. I found out they could live for ten to twenty years, and I was relieved.”

    You Ruxu listened quietly.

Zhou Tianzui looked at the empty space and continued, “Later, it still died.”

She didn’t say how it died.

You Ruxu wanted to hold Zhou Tianzui’s hand, her fingers curling and then unfurling, but she never found the courage to reach out. After that, they never talked about getting a dog again.

Zhou Tianzui sat opposite You Ruxu. Just as she sat down, You Ruxu’s phone rang. She answered, it was Chen Xiang.

“Teacher You, you’re awake?” Chen Xiang’s voice was full of guilt: “I’m so sorry about yesterday, I shouldn’t have let you drink so much.”

    You Ruxu said, “It’s okay.”

After drinking some honey water, her dry and sore throat eased, and her voice regained some of its former clarity. Chen Xiang asked, “Then should I pick you up this morning?”

You Ruxu said, “No, I’ll drive.”

Chen Xiang gave a small “oh” and apologized again before hanging up.

Zhou Tianzui said, “She’s quite concerned about you.”

You Ruxu looked up at her and said, “She has a boyfriend.”

“So what if she has a boyfriend?” Zhou Tianzui smiled. “Just because someone has a boyfriend doesn’t mean they can’t cheat.”

You Ruxu asked, “What about you?”

“Me?” Zhou Tianzui looked at her, her gaze intense. “I don’t have a boyfriend.”

You Ruxu gripped her glass tightly and didn’t speak. Zhou Tianzui slowly took a sip of milk, finished the bread on her plate, and asked You Ruxu, “Want to go for a walk downstairs?”

The sun outside was nice, warm and comfortable on the skin. Zhou Tianzui and You Ruxu went downstairs wearing beige casual clothes. You Ruxu said, “There’s something going on at the station these days, I might come back a little late.”

She had an exclusive interview to do, and she would probably be busy this week.

    Zhou Tianzui nodded.

Just as they walked out of the flower garden, a woman approached them. She was in her fifties, wearing a bright red coat, her face heavily powdered to cover the traces of time. The smell of perfume reached them before she did. Aunt Liu called out, “Xiao Tian!”

Zhou Tianzui looked up and smiled: “Aunt Liu.”

Aunt Liu lived in the same complex as her. They were both busy, and sometimes wouldn’t see each other for half a month, but whenever they met, they couldn’t avoid certain topics.

“Why did you leave after dinner yesterday?” Aunt Liu asked, “Were you not satisfied with the man?”

    Left after dinner yesterday?

Then why did she message saying she wasn’t coming home?

You Ruxu stood to the side. Aunt Liu said, “Well, the man isn’t very tall or handsome, but he’s rich! Three apartments in the city center. After you get married, you won’t have to be so busy at the hospital all the time. You can just enjoy life at home, wouldn’t that be nice?”

Zhou Tianzui said, “Aunt Liu, I’m not destined for a life of leisure.”

“You child.” Aunt Liu said, “Other people beg me to introduce them to him, and I don’t. Yes, Auntie knows you’re beautiful, you have high standards, but one can’t rely on their looks to make a living.”

She then looked at the person beside her: “Xiao Xu is still so beautiful. Does Xiao Xu have a boyfriend now?”

Seeing the topic shift to her, You Ruxu said, “No.”

Just as her voice fell, the person beside her chuckled softly. The laughter wasn’t obvious, but You Ruxu, sensitive to her every breath, still heard it. Before Aunt Liu could speak, You Ruxu said, “I don’t need you to introduce anyone, thank you.”

Aunt Liu’s words were cut short. Having just been rebuffed by Zhou Tianzui, and now hearing You Ruxu’s words, she couldn’t help but feel a little unhappy: “Both of you…”

With the condescending tone of an elder, she said, “Forget it, forget it, you two just make do with each other.”

Waving her hand, she left their sight.

After she left, You Ruxu turned to look at Zhou Tianzui.

Zhou Tianzui’s eyes glinted, her expression unreadable, a mixture of amusement and something else. You Ruxu looked at her, lowered her head: “I…”

“Let’s go.” Zhou Tianzui’s tone was indifferent, as if she wasn’t unhappy. She said, “Even making do depends on whether the other person is willing.” She looked at You Ruxu: “Don’t you think so, Teacher You?”

This form of address, the cool tone, amplified the sense of distance.

You Ruxu pursed her lips. The atmosphere became a little cold. The morning’s cold wind blew through the space between them, carrying a chill. She spoke: “I’m willing.”

    Zhou Tianzui looked at her.

You Ruxu said, “Whether it’s making do or whatever, I’m willing, but…”

    A ringtone interrupted her words.

Both of their phones rang at the same time.

Zhou Tianzui looked down and picked up her phone. The screen displayed Zhao Mingqi’s name. She looked at You Ruxu. You Ruxu had already answered the call. It was Shi Qi: “Come back to the station immediately!”

Her tone was urgent and rapid. You Ruxu asked, “What happened?”

Shi Qi said, “The fireworks factory in the development zone exploded! I’m already on my way to the scene with the team. Come directly to the scene, I’ll send you the location.”

You Ruxu’s heart clenched. Without thinking, she said, “I’ll be right there!”

Her expression turned serious, resuming her calm and composed reporter demeanor. After hanging up the phone, she and Zhou Tianzui looked at each other for two seconds, neither saying a word, then ran back inside almost simultaneously. Zhou Tianzui said, “The fireworks factory exploded at seven o’clock. Our hospital is the closest.”

Then the injured would definitely be sent to their hospital first.

You Ruxu said, “Has the number of injured been determined?”

“No.” Zhou Tianzui opened the door, and they went inside one after the other, each entering their own room. They came out less than two minutes later. You Ruxu had already tied up her hair. She wasn’t wearing makeup, but she was in her professional attire, wearing flat shoes. She said, “I need to go to the scene first, and I might go to your hospital later.”

Hearing the words “the scene,” Zhou Tianzui paused slightly, subconsciously grabbing You Ruxu’s hand.

A fireworks explosion could easily lead to a secondary explosion.

You Ruxu looked up and saw the look in Zhou Tianzui’s eyes. It wasn’t her usual calmness and coldness, but a mixture of complex emotions. She thought Zhou Tianzui would say something.

    Zhou Tianzui didn’t say anything.

She just let go of her hand.

    And said, “Let’s go.”

The door closed. They quickly went downstairs, each getting into their own car. After leaving the complex, one went left, the other right.
