    Chapter 61

Throughout the match, Liaowu barely changed his tactics, simply forming seals and striking with his palms, barely moving his feet.

Yet, these seemingly ordinary, gentle attacks completely suppressed Li Wufeng. No matter how he struggled, he couldn’t break free, only suffering a crushing defeat.

It was a clean and decisive victory.

“Liaowu of the Undying Sect wins,” the referee announced, unable to help but glance at Liaowu a few more times. He hadn’t expected the match to end like this.

Below the arena, the crowd was also discussing the fight. When Liaowu stepped down from the arena and returned to Heng Yu’s side, she teased him with a smile, “You really don’t know how to fight.”

His attacks on the arena were monotonous and lacked variation. Even saying “lacked variation” was being polite. There was no variation at all; one look at his moves revealed his lack of fighting experience.

It was only because he was so powerful, his true strength far exceeding his apparent cultivation level, that he was able to suppress Li Wufeng.

Liaowu nodded. “I’m not very good at it.”

“But you’re already very strong.” Heng Yu removed the bamboo leaf from her hair, held it to her lips to hide her slight smile, and said matter-of-factly, “Remember to shield me when we encounter danger in the future.”

    Liaowu didn’t hesitate. “Naturally.”

Heng Yu stretched. “We’re done here for now. Let’s go check when our next matches are scheduled.”

Liaowu nodded. Before they left, he asked, “Do you want to put the bamboo leaf back in your hair?”

Only then did Heng Yu remember the poor bamboo leaf she had been playing with. She looked down at it and held it up to Liaowu. “It’s a bit wrinkled.”

Liaowu took the bamboo leaf from her. He channeled his spiritual energy, enveloping the slightly wilted bamboo leaf in gentle wood-attribute energy. After a moment, the leaf regained its vibrant greenness.

Withdrawing his spiritual energy, Liaowu gently placed the bamboo leaf back in her hair.

After checking the schedule, they found their next matches were both two days later. There was no need to stay at the Sword Testing Grounds any longer. Heng Yu followed Liaowu back to his residence. She sat on a stool, resting her chin in her hands, and watched Liaowu sitting opposite her.

Under her gaze, Liaowu took out a carving knife from his storage ring and placed it on the table. Carving a wooden hairpin required a large piece of wood. After some thought, Liaowu took out a branch that had fallen from a thousand-year-old Bodhi tree.

The thousand-year-old Bodhi tree in the Undying Sect, constantly bathed in the smoke of incense and the chants of Buddhist cultivators, was no ordinary tree. Wearing accessories or talismans made from its fallen branches could protect the wearer from demonic energy and prevent them from easily succumbing to tribulations.

The branch looked ordinary, and Heng Yu couldn’t discern anything special about it. She sat quietly and watched him hold the wood in one hand and the carving knife in the other.

Before he began carving, Liaowu asked, “What kind of pattern do you want?”

“A clivia pattern, is that alright?” Heng Yu thought of the clivia plant on her table.

Liaowu dipped his brush in ink and drew a half-opened clivia flower on a blank sheet of paper. He paused, then drew clivia flowers in other poses, letting Heng Yu choose the style she liked.

Heng Yu pointed to the half-opened clivia. “I like this one.”

Liaowu also asked her for a wooden hairpin. He carefully examined the hairpin’s existing pattern and, after a moment of thought, had a clear idea of how to carve the new one.

He lowered his eyes and began carving diligently. The carving knife danced in his hands, wood shavings falling onto the table.

Heng Yu watched for a while, then felt a wave of drowsiness. She yawned lazily.

Even while concentrating on carving, Liaowu noticed her sleepiness. After making a cut, he paused. “Why don’t you go back to your room and sleep for a while? I’ll come find you after I finish carving the hairpin.” His tone rose slightly at the end, carrying a hint of inquiry.

Heng Yu shook her head. “No need.” She stretched. “I’ll just take a nap here on the table.”

With that, she rested her head on her arms and fell asleep.

Liaowu’s movements stopped. Only after sensing that she was asleep did he quietly get up from his chair and partially close the wooden window. Most of the sunlight streaming in was blocked, leaving only a few rays to gently caress her slender back.

Liaowu sat down again, cast a silencing spell on her, and picked up the carving knife again. The wooden hairpin gradually took shape.

Just as he was about to polish it further, hurried footsteps sounded outside the bamboo hut, followed by a knock and the excited voice of Little Monk Liaonian. “Senior Brother, Senior Brother, open the door!”

Liaowu glanced at Heng Yu. She continued to sleep soundly, apparently undisturbed by Liaonian’s commotion thanks to the silencing spell. Liaowu put down his tools and went to open the door.

The door opened, and Liaonian excitedly tried to enter.

Liaowu stopped him. “Let’s talk outside. Lord Luo is resting inside.”

Liaonian subconsciously glanced inside the hut, but Liaowu blocked most of his view, so he saw almost nothing. Liaonian scratched his head, agreed, and stepped back outside.

While the two brothers were talking, Heng Yu slowly opened her eyes. She touched her ear and dispelled the silencing spell. The sound of Liaowu and Liaonian’s conversation drifted in.

“Senior Brother, the ‘Formless Formation’ you asked the sect to borrow has arrived… and the Hehuan Seed has also been delivered…”

Heng Yu could only vaguely make out these words. She pushed open the window and looked out.

Liaowu was listening attentively to Liaonian. Sensing the movement behind him, he turned and glanced at Heng Yu, giving her a small smile.

Soon, Liaonian handed the items to Liaowu and hurried off. Liaowu returned to the hut with the items in hand.

“What did Liaonian bring you?” Heng Yu asked casually as she poured him a cup of water. The sun was quite strong outside, making it easy to get thirsty.

Liaowu sat back down opposite her, took a sip of water, and pushed all the items towards her. “These are for Lord Luo.”

Heng Yu looked down at the items Liaowu had pushed towards her. The “Formless Formation” was a formation book from the Black and White Academies. Although not particularly valuable, it wasn’t easily lent out. Now, a transcribed copy was placed before her.

And the black fruit in the wooden box, based on what she had just heard, should be the Hehuan Seed—an extremely rare item in the Hehuan Sect. So rare that there were only two left. It could be used as a substitute for admiration points to help Hehuan Sect disciples break through realms.

If this Hehuan Seed were presented to the Hehuan Sect Leader, he would undoubtedly be willing to exchange many rare materials for it.

    “For me?” Heng Yu repeated.

“Lord Luo was worried about admiration points a few days ago. Now, with the Hehuan Seed, you won’t have to worry about not having enough admiration points when breaking through to Core Formation.”

Liaowu explained. Worried that she wouldn’t accept it, he added, “The Hehuan Seed was a gift from the founder of the Hehuan Sect and has been stored in the Undying Sect for many years. This poor monk exchanged it with my own sect contribution points. It was just a small effort and won’t affect this poor monk in any way.”

Heng Yu traced the edge of the wooden box with her finger. Looking at the Bodhi Seed inside, she smiled and asked casually, “There’s only one Hehuan Seed. What will I do when I break through from Core Formation to Nascent Soul? Aren’t you afraid I’ll latch onto you?”

Liaowu placed his fingertip on the other side of the wooden box. “Lord Luo… seems unhappy?”

He was born with the responsibility to protect all beings, but the myriad beings in this world were indistinct and equal in his eyes. To him, they were often just symbols.

She was his only obsession. He just… wanted to treat her well. Had he chosen the wrong approach?

Thinking of this, Liaowu’s grip on the wooden box tightened, his fingertips turning white. He quickly felt a sense of dejection and helplessness. He truly didn’t know how to be good to someone.

Heng Yu didn’t know what Liaowu was thinking. She only felt the jade pendant at her waist warming up. The warmth spread from her waist, making her heart feel hot.

She subconsciously looked up at him, only to see his usual calm expression, his gentle eyes like the clear wind and bright moon, drawing one in and making them fall unconsciously.

Heng Yu smiled. “Why would you think I’m unhappy? I’m just a bit embarrassed. The Hehuan Seed is too valuable.”

Liaowu was slightly relieved. “It’s good that it’s useful to Lord Luo.”

“Alright, I won’t stand on ceremony, lest you overthink it.” Heng Yu put the Hehuan Seed and the “Formless Formation” into her storage ring.

She stretched. “The hairpin will probably take another hour or two to finish. I’ll go back to my room and read the ‘Formless Formation,’ and then come find you for dinner later?”

The faint smile on her face vanished as soon as she left the bamboo hut. Touching the jade pendant at her waist, she quickly walked back to the sea of irises.

Sitting cross-legged among the irises, Heng Yu took out the jade pendant and checked it, finding that the admiration points had become 7200. After staring at it for a while, she took out a transmission talisman and asked her master where he was.

Fifteen minutes later, Heng Yu arrived at You Yun’s residence. As a Nascent Soul cultivator, he didn’t live with the disciples. The Sword Sect had arranged a spacious cave dwelling for him.

Stepping on the crisp fallen leaves, Heng Yu walked up to You Yun. She said with some distaste, “Master, you should at least use a spell to clean up the fallen leaves on the ground.”

You Yun: “…Shouldn’t you be reflecting on yourself? Sweeping the courtyard for your master, isn’t that what a disciple should do?”

“Oh.” Heng Yu quickly changed the subject. “Master, let’s talk business. I came to you today to ask for something.”

She didn’t even sit down before stating her request. “…I think the Hehuan Sect should have something like this, right?”

After hearing her request, a look of disgust appeared on You Yun’s face. “We do, why? Are you planning to use it on that Buddha-son? No way, no way, how did I raise such a goody-two-shoes disciple! This is so unlike my style!”

Heng Yu rolled her eyes inwardly, but on the surface, she maintained a sweet smile. “Master, Wu Mei and Mu Huan always tell me how lucky I am to be your disciple, how generous you are to your own people, always granting their requests.” Seeing You Yun unconsciously straighten his posture, Heng Yu smiled inwardly and pressed on. “But I asked you about the sect’s secret, and you wouldn’t tell me. Now I’m asking you for something, and you’re also hesitant… Master, do you have other disciples outside?”

You Yun was speechless. He closed his fan and tapped it on the table. “Do you think something like that is easy to get?… Fine, I admit, the sect does have the seeds of that thing, but do you know what’s needed to nurture it from seed to fruit? Your blood, you idiot.”

In his thousands of years, You Yun had met many people. Those who, even after completing their missions, still wanted their targets to offer them everything. This was the first time he had met someone who considered their target’s kindness a burden.

And most importantly, such an idiot was actually his disciple!

    Chapter 60

Previously, Heng Yu had always assumed the hibiscus flower mark on Mi Yi’s eye was just a normal marking. After all, it was beautiful and enhanced Mi Yi’s appearance. But now, seeing her master’s reaction, she suspected it might be a type of restriction—the more beautiful, the more dangerous.

While Heng Yu was lost in thought, You Yun glanced at her, seeing through her mind. “Disciple, it’s not that easy to trick your master into revealing information.”

Heng Yu touched her nose and respectfully filled You Yun’s empty teacup. “How could I try to trick Master? I’m sincerely asking for your guidance. As my master, isn’t it your duty to answer your disciple’s questions? Here, Master, have some tea.”

You Yun was very pleased with her attentiveness, thinking that his disciple had finally learned how to respect her master. He cleared his throat and slowly picked up his teacup, his slender fingers toying with the lid. “In your previous letter, you mentioned meeting Mi Yi in Ping City. Did she tell you anything?”

Heng Yu thought for a moment and, instead of denying it, went along with his words. “Mi Yi said that as long as I don’t reject dual cultivation, all the sect’s arrangements would only benefit me.”

You Yun nodded. “That’s not wrong. But Mi Yi’s cultivation wasn’t high enough when she defected, so she didn’t know the full story behind that secret.”

Hearing this, Heng Yu knew there was more to it. She immediately sat up straight. “Master, what’s the secret?”

“Actually, in the past, Hehuan Sect disciples could choose whether or not to use admiration points for breakthroughs. Using admiration points makes early breakthroughs easier, but breaking through from Nascent Soul to Spirit Transformation becomes extremely difficult.”

“So back then, disciples with exceptional talent weren’t allowed to use admiration points for breakthroughs. Only those who had no hope of achieving immortality would use them.”

Disciples with ordinary talent used admiration points to lower the difficulty of advancement. Those whose limit might have been Foundation Establishment could reach Core Formation. Those whose limit was early Core Formation could reach late Core Formation, or even Nascent Soul with enough luck.

Because of this, the Hehuan Sect’s power grew rapidly, quickly rising among the thirteen sects and ranking among the top first-rate sects.

“But something happened later, right?” Heng Yu blinked, finishing You Yun’s sentence.

    “Yes, something happened.”

“What was it?” Heng Yu asked quickly.

You Yun tapped the table with his finger. “I said it’s a sect secret. Do you think I can just tell you? And you’re only at peak Foundation Establishment, why worry about this?”

Heng Yu: “…Master, you underestimate me.”

He really was a cheap master, actually attacking his disciple’s cultivation! With her cultivation at her age, she would be praised as a genius anywhere else!

You Yun chuckled, noncommittal. But after a moment of thought, he comforted her gently. “Don’t overthink it, lest it create flaws in your mental state. Look at your master, I’ve still smoothly cultivated to late Nascent Soul.”

It’s just that he was stuck at late Nascent Soul, unable to advance further. In recent years, the Hehuan Sect had slipped from the top ranks of first-rate sects to the bottom, and this was the main reason—the Hehuan Sect was the only sect among the eight righteous sects and five demonic sects without a Spirit Transformation cultivator!

With their top-tier strength being inferior, their influence naturally decreased, and so did their status.

Heng Yu rubbed her forehead. Another reason she was so persistent about knowing the Hehuan Sect’s secret was that although she had successfully inherited the original owner’s memories, the memories of the period when the original owner had her accident seemed to have been deliberately erased. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t remember.

This made Heng Yu feel that the Hehuan Sect was very dangerous. So dangerous that she didn’t dare fully trust even You Yun, sitting across from her, and reveal everything.

After pondering for a moment, Heng Yu gave up on asking. At least You Yun was right about one thing: she was only at peak Foundation Establishment. Even if she knew the whole truth, there wasn’t much she could do.

She really needed to cultivate diligently and increase her strength.

Early in the morning, Heng Yu finished her meditation. After washing up, she changed into a green dress and left her room to visit Liaowu next door.

When she arrived at the bamboo grove, she saw Liaowu standing under the eaves, holding a scripture and explaining it to another young Buddhist cultivator. He looked focused, occasionally pointing at the scripture to support his words. The young cultivator, only at peak Qi Refining, nodded repeatedly as he listened.

Heng Yu smiled, plucked a bamboo leaf, and twirled it between her fingers as she approached lightly. Getting closer, she heard the young cultivator say, “Thank you, Senior Brother, I understand now.” He then took the scripture from Liaowu and happily left.

Liaowu had sensed her presence as soon as she approached the bamboo grove. He watched his junior brother leave before turning to Heng Yu, a smile unconsciously gracing his features. “Why are you here so early? The matches at the Sword Testing Grounds haven’t started yet.”

“I was bored in my room, so I came to find you.”

Heng Yu handed him the bamboo leaf. Liaowu took it and played with it, unsure what she intended to do.

Heng Yu pointed at her hair. “The wooden hairpin I’m using today is a bit plain. Can you help me put this bamboo leaf in as decoration?”

Liaowu finally understood. He was half a head taller than Heng Yu, so he walked to her side, assessed the situation, and inserted the bamboo leaf into the most suitable spot.

Heng Yu touched her hair and nodded in satisfaction.

“This poor monk has many materials in his storage ring. After today’s matches, this poor monk will carve a new wooden hairpin for you.”

Heng Yu smiled casually. “As long as you don’t find it troublesome.”

    “It’s not troublesome.”

“You two—” A sigh came from the bamboo hut next door. Liaoyuan leaned against the doorframe, having been standing there for who knows how long. A playful smile danced on his eyebrows. “Lord Luo, you know I have special feelings for you. Shouldn’t you consider my proximity when getting close to Senior Brother Liaowu?”

Heng Yu lowered her hand and asked with a smile, “Does Senior Brother Liaoyuan truly have special feelings for me?”

“Of course, haven’t I been obvious enough?” Liaoyuan looked surprised.

“Then will Senior Brother Liaoyuan agree to any request I make?”

Liaoyuan raised an eyebrow, unsure what she was getting at. “As long as it’s within my power, I’ll agree to it, of course.”

A smile tugged at the corner of Heng Yu’s lips. She said with a fake smile, “Then please, Senior Brother Liaoyuan, shut up and go back to your room.”

    Liaoyuan: “…”

He sighed dramatically. “I understand now. The goddess of this era also has a bad temper, actually shutting her admirer out. This truly breaks my heart.”

Listening to their conversation, Liaowu shook his head with a smile. Seeing that Heng Yu’s hair was being ruffled by the strong wind common in this area near the Sword Sect, Liaowu didn’t let them continue their banter. He said, “Lord Luo, it’s windy outside, please come inside.” He nodded at Liaoyuan as a greeting, then led Heng Yu into his room.

Liaowu’s room was as simple as ever. Upon entering, Heng Yu immediately noticed the paper cat and grass dragonfly placed on his bedside table. She walked over, poked the paper cat’s forehead, rubbed its belly, and then went to sit at the table.

Liaowu sat opposite her and handed her a jade slip.

“What’s this?” Heng Yu asked as she took the jade slip and placed it against her forehead.

Her divine sense probed the jade slip, and she found that it contained information on the elite disciples from various sects participating in the Dharma Assembly. Her next opponent, Chang Xiyi, was also included.

—Chang Xiyi, Sword Sect disciple, peak Foundation Establishment, left-handed swordsman, signature move: Azure Sea Billowing Sword Formation.

Although it seemed like a single sentence, it even mentioned that Chang Xiyi was left-handed and his signature move, which was quite detailed. After all, Chang Xiyi wasn’t particularly high-profile within the Sword Sect.

“Did the Undying Sect gather this?” Heng Yu asked after putting down the jade slip.

Liaowu brewed a cup of flower tea for her. He pushed the cup towards her and answered her question, “The Hehuan Sect should be gathering information as well, but it will probably take another day or two to complete. So you can look at this one from this poor monk first.”

He knew that Chang Xiyi wasn’t a major threat to her. But since he had this jade slip, he naturally wanted to share it with her.

“It’s been a while since I’ve sparred with someone at the same cultivation level. I can use him to test my swordsmanship.”

Heng Yu picked up the teacup and took a sip of jasmine tea. Since being with Liaowu, she had barely had any opportunities to fight, and her sword hadn’t seen blood in a long time.

After she put down the teacup, Liaowu refilled it and said, “They seem to be making bamboo rice and bamboo leaf cakes. Would you like some?”

Heng Yu raised an eyebrow and teased, “The Undying Sect’s chefs are really resourceful. You’re not going to stop them?”

With bamboo leaf cakes and bamboo rice, it seemed the nearby bamboo grove had suffered quite a bit.

Liaowu shook his head. “The Undying Sect’s rules only prohibit harming the bamboo grove within the sect. Outside the sect, this rule doesn’t apply, and it wouldn’t be appropriate for this poor monk to restrict them.”

Heng Yu chuckled. The implication was clear: they didn’t care about other people’s bamboo groves, only their own.

She couldn’t help but wink at Liaowu, a playful look on her face as if she had seen through his thoughts.

Liaowu lowered his eyes and chuckled softly.

After breakfast, Heng Yu and Liaowu rode a crane to the Sword Testing Grounds. The grounds were already bustling with activity.

All one hundred and eight arenas were in use, with Qi Refining, Foundation Establishment, and Core Formation cultivators battling in designated areas, each using their full strength, creating a lively scene. Many cultivators were watching the matches near the arenas, either observing their opponents or simply enjoying the entertainment.

Heng Yu jumped down from the crane, clapped her hands, looked around, and asked Liaowu, “Where do we want to go?”

Liaowu said, “Let’s go watch the Foundation Establishment matches.”

    Heng Yu nodded. “Alright.”

They walked to the area designated for Foundation Establishment matches. Among the three major realms, the Foundation Establishment stage had the most arenas, a total of sixty-six. Most disciples in each sect were at the Qi Refining stage, but inner sect disciples were mostly at the Foundation Establishment and Core Formation stages. Since Core Formation was difficult to achieve, naturally, the majority of participants in the Dharma Assembly were at the Foundation Establishment stage.

This area was also the liveliest.

After entering this area, Heng Yu looked around carefully and saw Wu Mei competing in a match.

She pointed to the arena where Wu Mei was and said to Liaowu, “Let’s go over there and watch.”

“Alright,” Liaowu agreed. He didn’t mind; as long as she was happy.

Making their way through the crowd, Heng Yu quickly reached the arena where Wu Mei was. Catching sight of a young man with a heavy sword on his back, wearing Sword Sect inner disciple robes, Heng Yu smiled. “So it’s Fellow Daoist Yu.”

Yu Xia’s gaze was fixed on Wu Mei. Hearing Heng Yu’s voice, he turned his head, recognized her and Liaowu, and quickly saluted them.

Heng Yu returned the greeting and casually asked, “Is Fellow Daoist Yu here to watch Wu Mei’s match?”

Yu Xia explained, “Just passing by.”

What a coincidence. However, they weren’t close, so Heng Yu didn’t tease him further. She nodded and changed the subject, looking up at Wu Mei on the arena.

The fight had reached a critical stage. With a flash, Wu Mei conjured a water column. The water column seemed ordinary, but when it scattered into countless droplets, they instantly transformed into ice blades, reflecting dazzling light under the sun.

The ice blades rained down on her opponent, surrounding him. Her opponent reacted quickly, summoning a series of magical treasures to try and dispel the attack. But just as the treasures appeared, Wu Mei closed in.

The red ribbon in her hand seemed soft but was sharper than most swords. To seize the initiative, Wu Mei quickly threw the ribbon. It expanded in the air, encircling her opponent from all sides, trapping him within the barrage of ice blades with no chance of escape.

When the red ribbon retracted, her opponent had been hit by the ice blades and collapsed unconscious.

“Wu Mei of the Hehuan Sect wins!” The referee announced the result without any unnecessary words.

Wu Mei looked down at her soul token, saw that ten points had been added, and smiled slightly. She tugged at her collar, revealing more of her fair skin, and said with a smile, “You’ve done well,” before flying down from the arena and landing next to Yu Xia.

“Why are you here?” Wu Mei asked Yu Xia as she smoothed her hair, glancing at Heng Yu and waving.

“I knew you had a match, so I came to see you,” Yu Xia replied, looking at Wu Mei with a hesitant expression.

Wu Mei shrugged. As she did so, the fabric on her shoulder slipped down. Yu Xia quickly reached out to adjust it. Wu Mei calmly pulled her collar back up.

She looked at Heng Yu, who was watching from the side, and waved again. “I’m done here. I’ll be going now.”

With that, she took Yu Xia’s hand and left. Heng Yu noticed many sharp gazes directed at Wu Mei as she held Yu Xia’s hand. They were clearly from Sword Sect disciples.

However, in the next moment, Yu Xia, being led by Wu Mei, raised his sword, his expression turning cold. The gazes around them gradually retreated.

    This pair was really strange.

Heng Yu glanced at them before looking away. She touched the green bamboo leaf in her hair and glanced at the large stone tablet nearby, which displayed the day’s match schedule.

“It’s almost my turn,” Heng Yu said to Liaowu.

Just as she finished speaking, a referee in black on a nearby arena called out, “Luo Heng Yu of the Hehuan Sect versus Chang Xiyi of the Sword Sect. Please both come to the arena quickly.”

“So soon.” Heng Yu rubbed the hilt of her sword and said to Liaowu, “I’ll go up first.”

Liaowu nodded. He wanted to say something but then simply smiled. “I’ll await your victorious return.”

“Don’t worry,” Heng Yu said with a smile.

In the next moment, she flashed onto the arena and handed her soul token to the referee. Her opponent, standing opposite her, had an ordinary appearance and a restrained aura. He stood straight, like an unsheathed sword. He also handed his soul token to the referee.

Heng Yu always underestimated her opponents strategically but took them seriously tactically. Seeing Chang Xiyi’s aura, she narrowed her eyes slightly—it seemed this opponent wasn’t simple.

After confirming their identities, the referee quickly left the arena and announced the start of the match. As soon as the referee’s voice fell, Chang Xiyi’s sword left its sheath with a clang. The information was correct; he was a left-handed swordsman.

In the next instant, the tip of his sword lunged towards Heng Yu, the blade pressing down. Heng Yu shifted her footing, narrowly avoiding the sword. Only then did she draw her own sword. Her blade, incredibly sharp, grazed Chang Xiyi’s neck. The blade was icy cold, imbued with vast and chilling spiritual energy.

This exchange happened in the blink of an eye. The two crossed paths, then returned to their original positions.

Heng Yu’s clothes at her waist were torn, but her skin was unharmed. However, a thin trail of blood appeared on Chang Xiyi’s neck. He casually wiped his neck and raised his sword again, expressionless, chanting as he activated his sword technique and lunged towards Heng Yu. Their swords clashed continuously, the dull thuds echoing across the arena. Their movements were incredibly fast, making it difficult for those with weaker eyesight to follow their figures.

Soon, Heng Yu took two steps back. Although she was the first to retreat, ending the exchange, the one who was truly at a disadvantage, panting heavily, was Chang Xiyi.

Heng Yu’s robes flowed around her, her expression calm. She held her sword in her right hand and formed a seal with her left, coating her sword in a layer of icy frost that concealed deadly intent.

“Your swordsmanship is far inferior to mine,” Chang Xiyi, who had been expressionless, suddenly spoke.

Heng Yu smiled casually. She knew he was stalling for time, but she had the same intention. “But unfortunately, even at the same peak Foundation Establishment level, your overall strength is still inferior to mine.”

Even at the same cultivation level, there were differences in strength. Heng Yu had diligently practiced for a year. Although her swordsmanship foundation wasn’t as strong as Chang Xiyi’s, her control over sword Qi was far superior to his wide-sweeping style.

Chang Xiyi said coldly, “In that case, let me show you my strongest move. If you can withstand it, I’ll admit defeat.”

As his voice fell, Chang Xiyi slowly raised his sword. In the next instant, the sword split into six, forming a complex sword formation that integrated both offense and defense.

While Chang Xiyi was summoning his sword formation, Heng Yu naturally wouldn’t just stand there and wait for his strongest attack. She channeled her spiritual energy, her sword flashing forward in a series of swift and unpredictable strikes. The cold sword Qi forced Chang Xiyi to retreat repeatedly.

Just as he was about to be knocked down, Heng Yu was surrounded by the sword formation he had summoned. At this critical juncture, Chang Xiyi spun, barely managing to stay on his feet. Before he could breathe a sigh of relief, his prized Azure Sea Billowing Sword Formation, which he considered his strongest attack, was broken by Heng Yu with just three sword strikes.

Her figure flickered like a ghost, appearing beside Chang Xiyi. She raised her sword and gently placed it against his heart.

Chang Xiyi wanted to struggle again, but his body gave way, and he fell backwards.

“Luo Heng Yu of the Hehuan Sect wins!” The referee, seeing that Chang Xiyi had collapsed, immediately announced the result.

Only then did the surrounding spectators erupt in exclamations. “What happened? The sword formation seemed so powerful, how did it suddenly break?” “Those three sword strikes that broke the formation were so cool! Is this the Lord Luo of the Hehuan Sect?” “She actually found the flaws in the sword formation in such a short time and broke it directly. I’ve never heard of anyone in the younger generation of the Hehuan Sect being skilled in formations.”

The surrounding crowd buzzed with discussion, clearly impressed by Heng Yu’s performance. Heng Yu heard their discussions on the arena. She didn’t pay much attention, only feeling the faint glow emanating from her soul token at her waist. She took it out and saw that the points had indeed changed from zero to ten.

Heng Yu casually put away the soul token, then saluted her fallen opponent. “You’ve done well.”

Standing up straight, she jumped down from the arena and landed next to Liaowu, raising her chin slightly, as if to say: Why aren’t you praising me?

“Lord Luo’s understanding of formations has grown even stronger,” Liaowu praised softly.

The highlight of this match was how she broke the Azure Sea Billowing Sword Formation with three sword strikes. This sword formation was created by Chang Xiyi himself, so it wasn’t perfect. But Heng Yu’s ability to find its weaknesses in such a short time was what allowed her to win so easily.

“Your praise is so perfunctory,” Heng Yu commented. “There’s no need to repeat such obvious strengths. You might as well just say I fought beautifully.”

“It was a feast for the eyes,” Liaowu rephrased his compliment, following her words.

Heng Yu chuckled, no longer pressing him. “Let’s go to the Core Formation arena. It should be your turn soon.”

Liaowu calculated the time and agreed. “Let’s go.”

They arrived at the Core Formation arena. Just as Liaowu stopped, the referee on the nearby arena announced, “Liaowu of the Undying Sect versus Li Wufeng of the Netherworld Sect. Please both come to the arena quickly.”

As soon as the referee’s voice fell, Li Wufeng, wearing a half-black mask, flashed to the center of the arena.

Liaowu fingered his prayer beads and glanced at Heng Yu. Noticing that the bamboo leaf in her hair was slightly askew, he gently straightened it before stepping onto the arena at a leisurely pace.

The lingering scent of Bodhi hadn’t yet dissipated. Heng Yu blinked and subconsciously raised her hand, carefully touching the bamboo leaf, afraid of dislodging it.

After touching the leaf, Heng Yu slowly lowered her hand and looked up at Liaowu on the arena. She had rarely seen him fight, and this time, his opponent was two realms higher than him. It was likely to be a tough battle.

But just as this thought crossed her mind, Liaowu and Li Wufeng clashed.

As soon as they engaged, Heng Yu realized she had underestimated Liaowu’s strength. The so-called Light of Buddhism wasn’t just because of his Innate Buddha Bones.

He held black prayer beads in one hand and formed seals with the other, his expression serene, his attacks devoid of any malice. Buddhist chants echoed around him, as if millions of believers were worshipping him.

Each palm strike carried a power that could shake one’s soul. It felt as though a deity had descended from the Buddhist realm to punish a doubting believer.

So what if Li Wufeng cultivated the path of slaughter? So what if he had grown through countless battles? How could a mere mortal resist the benevolent power of a deity?

    Chapter 59

As dusk approached, Heng Yu and Liaowu rode a crane back to their lodgings. Liaowu landed gracefully and, seeing her about to jump down from the crane’s back, subconsciously reached out to her.

Heng Yu landed steadily and, noticing his outstretched hand, took two steps forward and pinched the tip of the index finger she had nibbled earlier. It wasn’t an overly intimate gesture, but it carried a hint of ambiguity because of what had happened before. Such an action was actually more potent than holding hands.

Liaowu instinctively retracted his fingertip. Although her fingertips were slightly cool, the part of his skin that had touched hers felt burning hot.

    “Lord Luo, let go.”

Heng Yu asked earnestly, “I’ve already used my mouth, is it too much to use my hand now?”

    Liaowu didn’t answer.

Heng Yu’s fingertip traced his. “I’ll let go if you answer my question.”

Liaowu still remained silent. He simply turned his wrist, took her hand, and said, “It’s not too much. This poor monk will escort you back.”

With that, he led Heng Yu forward.

Heng Yu was stunned for a moment, then subconsciously followed his pace.

After watching Heng Yu enter the sea of irises, Liaowu turned and left.

Within the sea of irises, Heng Yu reached out and took out the identification jade pendant hidden at her waist. She silently injected spiritual energy into it.

    Admiration Points – 6800.

Heng Yu spent the following days studying formation books in her room. She had finished reading all the formation books Liaowu had given her and was now going through the books her master, You Yun, had sent over.

In the blink of an eye, the day of the Dharma Assembly arrived.

Early that morning, Heng Yu finished her meditation. She got up, washed, and changed her clothes. Estimating that the time was about right, she opened the door and walked out.

Outside the sea of irises, over a hundred Hehuan Sect disciples were already gathered. The male disciples were uniformly dressed in black attire, while the female disciples wore red dresses. Although the styles were different, judging by the revealing and flamboyant designs, anyone could guess which sect they belonged to.

Chi was already standing at the front of the group, leading the way to the Sword Testing Grounds. Seeing Heng Yu, he opened his folding fan, gave a graceful salute, and said, “Lord Luo, you’re early.”

“Lord Chi,” Heng Yu returned the greeting and greeted the other young masters. As she greeted them, she took in their appearances. In the cultivation world, due to the constant refinement of their meridians by spiritual energy, beautiful people were common. And the Hehuan Sect was especially full of beauties, each with their unique charm.

These young masters were all of different types, with their only similarities being their excellent figures and stunning looks.

After a moment of appreciation, Heng Yu withdrew her gaze and stood there holding her sword, waiting.

Soon, Wu Mei and Mu Huan also came out. Once everyone had arrived, Chi, the leader, raised his right hand and said with a smile, “Everyone, let’s go.”

Following his command, everyone used their own methods to travel to the Sword Testing Grounds.

When they arrived, the grounds were already packed with people from various sects. As a top-tier sect in the Canglan Continent, the Hehuan Sect was assigned a prominent position, right between the Sword Sect and the Undying Sect.

Heng Yu stood among the crowd and looked up towards the front. At the very front stood Nascent Soul cultivators in flowing robes. Her nominal master was among them, chatting animatedly with a female Nascent Soul cultivator from the Sound Sect.

Seeming to sense his disciple’s gaze, You Yun turned his head, his sharp eyes sweeping over the crowd and quickly landing on Heng Yu. Their eyes met across the distance. You Yun opened his folding fan, hiding his sly smile behind it, and then turned his attention back to the Sound Sect cultivator.

Without making everyone wait long, the Sword Sect Leader slowly walked onto the high platform. He drew his sword from his waist. Such a simple action caused the swords at the waists of countless people to vibrate, as if they wanted to break free from their owners’ control and bow to the Sword Sect Leader’s sword.

Heng Yu pressed down on the sword at her waist, her eyes fixed on the Sword Sect Leader. This was the prestige of the number one swordsman!

    “Let the competition begin!”

As the Sword Sect Leader’s voice rang out, one hundred and eight platforms rose from the ground behind him—these were the competition arenas.

“This Dharma Assembly is hosted by my Sword Sect. There are twelve events in total, including sparring, formation battles, pill refining… Everyone must participate in the sparring event, while the other events require registration.”

“For the first ten days, only the sparring event will be held. From the eleventh day onwards, the other events will gradually open. Please take note.”

The Sword Sect Leader’s voice was calm and steady. After briefly explaining the rules, he announced the official start of the Dharma Assembly.

“The Sword Sect is so straightforward,” Mu Huan muttered beside Heng Yu, yawning lazily. “The last Dharma Assembly was hosted by the Black and White Academies. Their Sect Leader was incredibly long-winded. I stood there and slept for a whole hour, and when I woke up, he still hadn’t finished speaking.”

    Heng Yu: “…”

Compared to that, the Sword Sect was indeed straightforward.

The Dharma Assembly had begun, and the crowd naturally began to disperse.

Mu Huan stretched her wrists and offered, “Want to go register for the other events together?”

Heng Yu shook her head. “No, you go ahead.”

“What are you going to do?”

    “Wait for someone here.”

Mu Huan immediately guessed who. She curled her lip, thinking that between Dao Zhuo and Senior Brother Liaowu, Senior Brother Liaowu should be the more taciturn one, so why was he so much more proactive than that fool Dao Zhuo?

With this thought, Mu Huan gritted her teeth, determined to find a way to speed up her own pursuit.

Watching Mu Huan disappear into the crowd, Heng Yu stood there, sword in hand, waiting. She didn’t have to wait long. Liaowu, dressed in his moon-white robes, walked up to her and said gently, “Lord Luo, let’s go.”

Heng Yu smiled. “Let’s go. What events are you planning to register for?”

Among various miscellaneous studies, Liaowu excelled at pill refining. Although only at the early stage of Core Formation, he could already refine sixth-grade pills, surpassing his cultivation level.

He replied, “Pill refining competition, mental fortitude test, and Dao discussion.”

Heng Yu had also already decided which events to participate in. “I plan to participate in the formation battle and the mental fortitude test.”

She had initially wanted to participate in the Dao discussion as well. The so-called Dao discussion was a debate about one’s understanding of their chosen cultivation path. Heng Yu now had some understanding of the Path of Freedom, but having only been in this world for a year, her comprehension wasn’t deep enough. She felt that participating in this event would only expose her shortcomings after a couple of rounds, so she decided not to register.

“Then let’s register for the mental fortitude test first, then this poor monk will accompany you to register for the formation battle, and then you can accompany this poor monk to register for the other two?” Liaowu turned to her for her opinion.

What opinion could Heng Yu have? His arrangements clearly prioritized her.

Heng Yu and Liaowu made their way through the crowd, asking for directions, and successfully found the registration area for the mental fortitude test. Registration was simple, requiring only a swipe of their soul tokens.

After making their rounds, it was almost afternoon when they finished registering for all the events. Returning to the center of the Sword Testing Grounds, Heng Yu found that the Sword Sect had already arranged the matches for the next two days.

The match arrangements were recorded in jade slips. Heng Yu received a jade slip from a Sword Sect disciple. She probed the jade slip with her divine sense, reading the information within, and quickly located her and Liaowu’s names.

After confirming the details, Heng Yu withdrew her divine sense and said to Liaowu beside her, “I have a match tomorrow morning against Chang Xiyi of the Sword Sect. Do you know anything about this person?”

Liaowu thought for a moment, but he had no impression. It seemed her opponent wasn’t very famous within the Sword Sect.

Heng Yu nodded, feeling confident about tomorrow’s match. Unless her opponent was hiding their true strength, her victory was assured.

“Your opponent is Li Wufeng from the Netherworld Sect. Your match is also tomorrow morning,” Heng Yu told Liaowu.

Compared to Chang Xiyi, Li Wufeng was much more famous—the closed-door disciple of the Netherworld Sect Leader, who had condensed a Slaughter Golden Core and walked the path of slaughter, a ruthless individual.

Liaowu also knew of his reputation. It could be said that Li Wufeng’s fame had been carved out through bloodshed. However, he remained calm. At this moment, he was more concerned about another matter. “Didn’t Lord Luo say she was tired earlier? Let’s go back.”

Heng Yu stretched and agreed with a smile.

Back in her room, just as Heng Yu was about to change out of her dress, a knock came at the door. Along with the knocking came a familiar, languid voice. “Disciple, your master has returned. Come and open the door.”

Heng Yu went to open the door. You Yun, dressed in a green robe, stood outside, casually playing with his folding fan. Seeing the door open, You Yun looked Heng Yu up and down, a satisfied smile appearing on his face. “Your cultivation progress is good, and your foundation is solid. You’re just one opportunity away from breaking through to the Core Formation stage, right?”

Heng Yu smiled. “Master, please come in.”

After inviting You Yun in and offering him a seat, Heng Yu poured him a cup of tea. “I thought Master was too engrossed in the company of beauties to find the time to see me for a few more days.”

You Yun took a sip of tea, then closed his folding fan. He tapped the table with the fan. “What do you mean, engrossed in the company of beauties? Your master is a late-stage Nascent Soul cultivator. This trip, I represented the sect’s image, and every action I took was carefully considered. Disciple, you can’t just look at the surface.”

Heng Yu listened silently as he spouted nonsense.

When he was finished, Heng Yu asked, “Master, roughly how much admiration value is needed to break through from Foundation Establishment to Core Formation?”

You Yun casually threw out a number: “Twenty thousand.”

    Heng Yu: “…”

She had thought her 6800 admiration points were a lot. But… was this even considered a lot?!

Seeing her speechless expression, You Yun raised an eyebrow. “How many admiration points do you have now?”

“…” Heng Yu waved her hand and asked seemingly casually, “Master, why do our sect disciples need to rely on admiration value to aid in breakthroughs? Cultivation emphasizes natural progression. Won’t using admiration points in the long run damage our Dao foundation?”

Hearing Heng Yu’s seemingly innocent question, the smile on You Yun’s face froze, then slowly faded. He subconsciously raised his hand and rubbed the mark on the side of his left ear.

From Heng Yu’s position, she could vaguely make out the shape of the mark—a bewitching red spider lily.

At that moment, Heng Yu suddenly remembered that Mi Yi also had a hibiscus flower mark near the corner of her eye.

    Chapter 58

Heng Yu’s movement was subtle. From Wu Mei and Mu Huan’s perspective, they could only see her wide sleeves, not the small movement hidden beneath them. Only Liaowu could clearly perceive it because her pinky finger was hooked with his. The sensation was real.

A helpless expression flickered across his face, and he tugged lightly. He didn’t pull her hand away, but instead caused it to sway, the bell bracelet on her wrist jingling, attracting the attention of Wu Mei and Mu Huan.

Under their curious gazes, Heng Yu asked casually, “Where are you going next?”

Wu Mei shrugged. “I’m going back to my cabin and wait patiently for the Dharma Assembly to begin.” She wasn’t a masochist and didn’t want to be constantly surrounded. Although the disciples who had been confronting her had retreated, there were still other Sword Sect disciples around. As they passed by her, they cast sidelong glances, their swords seeming ready to be drawn and pointed at her at any moment.

As her voice fell, a streak of light appeared in the sky. After circling for a moment, it seemed to sense Wu Mei’s presence and flew straight towards her, transforming into a transmission talisman.

Looking at the talisman, Wu Mei sighed. She took it, unfolded it, and after reading the contents, muttered, “Can’t they give it a rest? The Dharma Assembly is about to start, shouldn’t they be focusing on cultivation? What do they want with me?”

Although her voice was soft, Heng Yu, being close by, overheard her. It seemed the transmission talisman was from Yu Xia.

“What, is there something more to your story with Yu Xia?” Heng Yu asked.

Wu Mei rolled her eyes. Even in anger, the beauty was captivating. “What more could there be? You’ve been reading too many storybooks. Hehuan Sect disciples walk the line between good and evil, sometimes doing things that push the boundaries to achieve our goals.” She then gave Heng Yu a meaningful look, seemingly implying that Heng Yu should learn from her.

Heng Yu smiled, not bothering to respond. However, she wouldn’t mind watching Wu Mei’s drama unfold if the opportunity arose.

“Hey, what’s that look on your face?” Wu Mei said, dissatisfied.

While the two were talking, Mu Huan was also deep in thought. She wanted to continue following Liaowu. But now, a sense of crisis was rising within her. Among the three of them, her inner sect mission was ranked A, Wu Mei’s was quasi-S, and Heng Yu’s was SS. Her mission was the easiest, but Wu Mei had already taken her target by force, and Heng Yu was also making good progress. In comparison, her progress was the slowest.

Flirting with Liaowu could wait, but completing her inner sect mission was more important. Thinking of this, Mu Huan pouted. “I’m going to find that fool Dao Zhuo and see what he’s up to.”

“Then go quickly, don’t waste time standing here,” Heng Yu waved her hand, urging them to leave, looking as if she couldn’t stand them.

Both Wu Mei and Mu Huan rolled their eyes at her and then left in opposite directions, their figures quickly disappearing into the crowd.

After they left, Liaowu, who had been silently standing beside Heng Yu, finally spoke. “Lord Luo.”

Heng Yu raised her wrist slightly. Her wide sleeve slid down, revealing their intertwined pinkies.

To justify her teasing, Heng Yu emphasized, “This is the interest.” After speaking, she slowly released his finger and took a step back, increasing the distance between them.

    “Interest?”

    “Yes.”

It was the interest for making her feel uncomfortable earlier.

After replying, Heng Yu walked forward. Her gaze swept the surroundings, looking for interesting things and people to pass the time. Liaowu silently followed beside her, carefully helping her avoid the crowds, lest they bump into her.

After walking for a while, they left the market and the Sword Testing Grounds. The number of people around them decreased dramatically, and the noise subsided. A clear lake was not far ahead. The wind here was strong, and Liaowu narrowed his eyes slightly, his long eyelashes fluttering.

He subconsciously shifted his body, shielding her from the gusts of wind, his gaze falling on her, his tone uncertain. “Is Lord Luo unhappy today?”

Heng Yu’s previously calmed emotions stirred again at his question. She looked at Liaowu without speaking, but the emotions in her eyes gave the answer.

Liaowu didn’t know what had happened. He lowered his eyes, wondering if it was because of their conversation on the way to the Sword Testing Grounds or at the grounds themselves. But if it was that conversation… wasn’t he the one who should be feeling more upset?

She was helping him overcome his love tribulation, a debt he owed deeply, and yet she planned to never see him again. Wasn’t he the one who should feel helpless and powerless?

Between the two of them, she always held the initiative. If she truly made a decision, he… couldn’t object. His usually gentle features were tinged with a moment of silence.

Heng Yu felt an inexplicable tightness in her chest. She reached out and tugged at Liaowu’s sleeve. “What are you thinking about? I was just joking with you earlier. That moment of dejection was fleeting. I’m happy that you’re accompanying me around the Sword Sect today. Why would I be unhappy?”

She smiled again, a bright and unrestrained smile, her eyes sparkling.

Liaowu looked at her. She was smiling, a carefree and unrestrained smile. But he felt like her smile was veiled in mist, not entirely genuine.

He suddenly lowered his head and took out two milk candies from his storage ring. He peeled one and put it in his mouth. The milk candy melted in his mouth, the sweetness spreading and calming him.

After regaining his usual composure, he peeled the wrapper off the other candy and offered it to her.

Heng Yu looked at him. “Do you think it would damage the Buddha-son’s reputation if I ate this candy from your hand in such a crowded place?”

Liaowu’s newly calmed emotions stirred again. He sighed lightly. “…Compared to that, this poor monk prefers that Lord Luo does as she pleases.”

Do as she pleases? Alright, at least when it came to eating candy, she would follow her heart.

Heng Yu leaned closer, close enough to smell the faint sandalwood scent on him. She opened her mouth and took the candy from his hand. After a pause, following her heart, she gently nibbled on his fingertip through the wrapper. Her bite was so light and gentle that he didn’t notice it until a moment later.

Before he could react, she released his finger and took a step back, a genuine, bright, and unrestrained smile spreading across her face. “I wasn’t lying before. The dejection was only momentary. From the moment I left to find you until now, I’ve been happy most of the time.”

A tingling sensation spread from his fingertip to his heart. Liaowu felt his heart tremble uncontrollably. This feeling made him flustered, so much so that he subconsciously wanted to recite the Heart-Soothing Mantra.

“What are you thinking about now?” Heng Yu said. “…Let me guess, are you thinking of reciting the Heart-Soothing Mantra?”

“When Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva practiced deep Prajñāpāramitā, she clearly saw that the five aggregates are all empty, thus transcending all suffering and affliction,” Heng Yu recited the Heart-Soothing Mantra before Liaowu, her voice soft.

Although she recited the Buddhist scripture seriously, Liaowu’s flustered feeling didn’t lessen.

“Shariputra, form does not differ from emptiness, emptiness does not differ from form, form is emptiness, emptiness is form…”

The Hehuan Sect identification jade pendant at her waist was getting warmer. The temperature gradually increased.

“Shariputra, all dharmas are marked with emptiness; they do not arise or cease, are not defiled or pure, do not increase or decrease…”

Heng Yu’s gaze fell on Liaowu’s face. Slowly, she chuckled. She suddenly realized she had been mistaken about something.

Compared to Liaowu, she was more like the seductive siren.

He was undergoing his love tribulation, unable to cover his ears and ignore her soft whispers, just like the sailors who couldn’t resist the siren’s song.

But she was different from the siren. She had the chance to make him crash and sink, but she couldn’t bring herself to do it. So she kept wanting him to linger for a while, to accompany her in this lonely sea, before finally letting him cross these waters.

“I’m so kind,” Heng Yu said narcissistically.

As soon as she finished speaking, the increasingly hot jade pendant at her waist began to cool down. Liaowu snapped out of his trance. He lowered his eyes and chuckled. “Liaoyuan praised Lord Luo as a goddess of this era. Since a goddess is admirable, it’s natural for her to be kind.”

Heng Yu said, “Liaoyuan was joking when he praised me. But I take your praise seriously.”

Listening to the whistling wind, Heng Yu looked out at the clear lake surface. Then she couldn’t help but reach out and fiddle with the jade pendant at her waist.

After a moment of distraction, Heng Yu pointed into the distance. “There seems to be something interesting happening over there. Since we have nothing else to do, why don’t you accompany me to take a look?”

Saying that, she quickly walked through the crowd, heading towards the commotion. Her red skirt swayed gently as she walked, the embroidered Hehuan flowers blooming as if emitting a faint, dangerous yet seductive fragrance. As the distance between her and Liaowu increased, Liaowu quickly caught up, walking beside her once more.

  • Ferrying the Buddha

    Chapter 57

When Liaowu returned to Heng Yu after receiving his soul token, all of Heng Yu’s fluctuating thoughts calmed down. Her gaze swept past Liaowu and landed on Mu Huan, who was following closely behind him. Her expression was somewhat speechless. “Why are you following us?”

Mu Huan lifted her chin slightly, her tone disdainful. “I’m not here for you. I’ll follow if I want to, can’t I?”

Heng Yu was exasperated with this woman. She already had a whole pond of fish back at the Hehuan Sect, and even though Dao Zhuo wasn’t fully hooked yet, she was now trying to add another fish, the Buddha-son Liaowu, to her collection.

    “Fine, follow if you want.”

Liaowu smiled at Heng Yu, and seeing that she was no longer paying attention to Mu Huan, he handed her the soul token. The token was ordinary, a small, square wooden plaque with simple carvings on the back and a blank front.

Heng Yu took the token and played with it in her hand. “Do I just inject my divine sense into it?”

Liaowu nodded, explaining, “Just inject your divine sense and leave your soul imprint and sect token aura.”

Heng Yu injected her divine sense, leaving her mark. As her divine sense retreated, three lines of black text slowly appeared on the previously blank token: Hehuan Sect, Luo Heng Yu, Zero. These three lines corresponded to her sect, name, and points.

“How do we earn points in this Dharma Assembly?” Heng Yu asked curiously.

Mu Huan answered this question. She had arrived at the Sword Testing Grounds earlier than Heng Yu and Liaowu and had already inquired about everything. Moreover, she wouldn’t miss such a good opportunity to show off. Although she was answering Heng Yu’s question, Mu Huan kept looking directly at Liaowu. Her voice was sweet and seductive. “There are twelve types of competitions in this Dharma Assembly. The simplest is sparring, where the strong prevail. Besides that, there’s formation battles, refining competitions for tools and pills, and tests of mental fortitude and understanding of the three thousand Great Daos… In short, it encompasses everything, allowing the younger generation to compete from all aspects.”

After listening to Mu Huan’s introduction, Heng Yu raised an eyebrow. “This method of competition is quite novel.”

It was like a comprehensive assessment of the younger generation. A comprehensive assessment was indeed more objective and fair than a simple sparring competition, and the final ranking would be more authoritative.

At this point, Mu Huan finally deigned to shift her gaze from Liaowu to Heng Yu. She said, “I was already tired of the last Dharma Assembly, but since Lord Luo didn’t participate last time, it’s natural to be excited.”

Heng Yu gave a fake smile. She stepped forward and walked calmly towards Liaowu. “Of course, I’m looking forward to this Dharma Assembly. Liaowu promised to accompany me throughout the entire event.” After speaking, Heng Yu turned her head and winked at Liaowu, her wrist moving slightly as her fingertips lazily traced the back of his hand. Her expression carried a hint of charm, perfectly mimicking Mu Huan’s flirtatious gestures towards Liaowu.

Of course, Mu Huan’s charm stemmed from her cultivation technique, emanating from within, like a bewitching fox demon. Heng Yu’s charm, however, was more superficial. While Liaowu remained unmoved by Mu Huan’s seductive poses, now he involuntarily took half a step back, lowered his eyes slightly, put his hands together, and chanted, “Amitabha.”

The identification jade pendant at Heng Yu’s waist felt faintly warm. She glanced down at her waist before looking up and changing the subject, proactively suggesting to Liaowu, “Let’s go to the trading area and have a look around.”

Saying that, Heng Yu strode forward. Liaowu followed behind her. Mu Huan paused for a moment, stomped her foot in frustration, and then hurried to catch up.

A small trading area was set up in the northeast corner of the Sword Testing Grounds. It was especially lively, with not only Sword Sect disciples setting up stalls but also disciples from other sects joining in the fun. They were selling all sorts of things; Heng Yu even saw Hehuan Sect disciples selling aphrodisiacs that enhanced the effects of dual cultivation. And they were quite popular.

The three of them walked a bit deeper into the area. Heng Yu noticed a shop selling various cultivation manuals and was about to go over and take a look when she suddenly sensed a sharp sword Qi slashing towards her from the side.

Before she could raise her hand to block the sword Qi, Liaowu, who had been silently following behind her, moved forward and shielded her. Casually dissipating the sword Qi, Liaowu turned to Heng Yu, his voice gentle. “Lord Luo, are you alright?”

Heng Yu shook her head. “That sword Qi wasn’t aimed at me directly. It must have been accidental.”

Heng Yu peered past him to see who would openly fight in such a crowded marketplace. Not far from them, two groups were confronting each other. Or rather, six people wearing Sword Sect inner disciple uniforms were surrounding a woman. The woman’s face was not unfamiliar to Heng Yu; it was Wu Mei.

“Oh, what trouble has Wu Mei encountered?” Mu Huan’s schadenfreude-filled voice immediately followed, perfectly portraying the vicious villainess. Among the ten young masters of the Hehuan Sect, only the three of them were women. In the past, Heng Yu had been very low-key, staying in her courtyard to cultivate and having little interaction with the other two. However, Mu Huan and Wu Mei were of similar status, and they had clashed many times, resulting in a deep-seated conflict. Naturally, Mu Huan wouldn’t miss the chance to watch Wu Mei’s predicament.

Mu Huan didn’t control her volume, and the Sword Sect disciples surrounding Wu Mei turned to look at her. Seeing her and Heng Yu’s attire, they immediately guessed their identities. The leading male disciple cupped his hands in greeting. “Fellow Daoists, this is a private matter between us and Wu Mei. Please do not interfere.”

Wu Mei’s face was cold. She silently unwrapped the silk ribbon around her wrist, assuming a defensive posture. She wasn’t surprised to hear Mu Huan say, “This has nothing to do with me.”

What surprised her was Heng Yu’s response. Heng Yu asked, “You are Sword Sect disciples, yet you openly fight in this crowded market. Doesn’t this violate the Sword Sect’s rules? Your sword Qi almost injured me just now. How do you intend to settle this account?”

The Sword Sect disciples exchanged glances. They had finally cornered Wu Mei, and letting her go so easily would be too lenient. They knew Heng Yu was trying to help Wu Mei, but they couldn’t find fault with her words.

Not far away, Wu Mei blew a kiss at Heng Yu. Then she stretched, her slender, white waist arching and peeking out from beneath her slightly short robe. “If you want to fight, then fight. If not, then move aside. Your Sword Sect’s Enforcement Team will be here soon. Speaking of which, they’re coming awfully slow. Could it be that you’ve already notified them in advance and asked them to delay their arrival? Tsk tsk, it’s nice to be able to cause trouble freely within your own sect.”

Their secret arrangements exposed, the leading disciple’s expression turned annoyed. He said hatefully, “Fine, we’ll let you off the hook for now. Let’s go!” They turned and quickly disappeared into the crowd.

The onlookers, seeing that there was no more excitement to be had, dispersed. Heng Yu then stepped forward and walked up to Wu Mei. “Why were they surrounding you?”

Wu Mei looked disheveled. Before Heng Yu and the others arrived, she had already exchanged a few blows with them. Their cultivation levels were similar, and being besieged by six people, she hadn’t fared well.

Hearing Heng Yu’s question, she sighed and waved her hand tiredly. “It’s a long story.”

“Then make it short,” Mu Huan urged.

Wu Mei glared at her; Mu Huan just wanted to see her in trouble. In contrast, Wu Mei felt that Lord Luo was a rare good person in the sect, having just spoken up for her.

Fortunately, Heng Yu didn’t know what Wu Mei was thinking, otherwise she would have secretly complained about this sudden “good person” card. The Hehuan Sect truly lived up to its reputation as a demonic sect; the camaraderie between fellow disciples was as fragile as paper. She had only said a few words and had become a ‘rare good person in the sect.’ This was a bit too much.

Wu Mei thought for a moment and decided not to hide anything. “I did some things to infiltrate the Sword Sect.”

“What things?” Heng Yu asked curiously.

“…I exposed an affair between a Sword Sect elder and a female disciple, and then I was captured by the enraged elder. Originally, the Sword Sect planned to let me go after learning my identity, but in order to be closer to my target, I forced my way into a Sword Sect competition. That competition was essentially to choose the ten most beautiful women of the Sword Sect…” Wu Mei spread her hands and said with a wry smile, “…Who would have thought that I would outshine everyone, stealing the limelight and overshadowing all the other female disciples. After that competition, I earned nearly ten thousand admiration points in one go. But since I stole the limelight from others, I was resented by those with poor character.”

The wry smile on her lips looked more like boasting. Thinking of her own pitiful admiration points, Heng Yu was certain: Wu Mei was showing off.

Just as Heng Yu thought the story was over, Wu Mei continued, “After that competition, the Sword Sect wanted to kick me out even more, but of course, I couldn’t leave. So then I…” Wu Mei looked up at the sky. “I fed Yu Xia the aphrodisiac my master gave me. You know, even Nascent Soul cultivators can’t resist that drug, and then I successfully… had my way with him. I have to say, the Sword Sect’s chief disciple has a great physique.”

Mu Huan: “!” This woman had made even more progress than her!

Heng Yu: “…” Sister, you’re amazing.

Even Liaowu couldn’t control his expression, a hint of surprise appearing in his eyes. Who was Yu Xia? He was the number one among the younger generation of the Sword Sect, the chief disciple, and the future sect leader. He was seen as a role model by the Sword Sect disciples.

And yet, within their own territory, their beacon of hope had been drugged and seduced by a demonic woman!

Heng Yu coughed lightly, breaking the silence. “I regret helping you.”

Wu Mei reached out and poked Heng Yu’s shoulder with her slender finger. “Can’t you have a little camaraderie? I think you’re just jealous that I took him by force. I’m thinking, Elder You Yun must have given you plenty of aphrodisiacs too. If you’re envious of me, why don’t you…” She turned to look at Liaowu, her chin raised and a meaningful smile on her face.

Heng Yu followed her gaze to Liaowu. Meeting Liaowu’s calm gaze, Heng Yu said obediently, “Senior Brother Liaowu, don’t worry, I won’t be led astray.”

Wu Mei curled her lip. “You must think the Buddha-son lacks technique. But it’s fine, you have enough for both of you.”

Why should she be the only one to be embarrassed? Let’s hurt each other.

At this point, Mu Huan didn’t mind joining forces with Wu Mei. “Exactly, Lord Luo. Have you been wasting your time learning the art of dual cultivation all these years?”

Heng Yu smiled. “Yes, I’ve long forgotten it. Besides, do I need to resort to forceful methods to seduce the Buddha-son?”

She took a step back and, under the cover of her wide sleeves, gently hooked Liaowu’s pinky finger.

This gesture was like asking Liaowu: Does she need to?

    Does she?

He didn’t speak, his expression as calm as ever. But the slightly warm jade pendant at Heng Yu’s waist answered for him.

See, the jade pendant was more honest than he was.

  • Ferrying the Buddha 56

    Chapter 56

After waiting for a whole day, Heng Yu only received a message talisman.

Crushing it with her spiritual energy, she heard her master’s familiar, cheerful voice: “Disciple, Master met an old friend at the main hall and won’t be able to see you for the next two days. We’ll meet on the day of the Dharma Assembly.”

If she wasn’t mistaken, she could faintly hear a woman’s laughter in the background.

    Heng Yu: “…”

So, her master was enjoying himself and had forgotten about her, his disciple.

Stroking the storage ring he had given her, Heng Yu calmed down.

It was fine. He was just a “cheap master” in her mind anyway. They were even.

Besides, it wasn’t just her master who could enjoy himself. She could too!

Heng Yu organized the formation books on her desk, tied up her hair with the wooden hairpin, and left her room with her sword.

Many Qi Refining disciples were playing in the iris field.

Hehuan Sect disciples were known for their romantic nature and artistic talents. Some were playing music, some were dancing, and some were flirting. Even at the Sword Sect, they didn’t hold back.

Heng Yu slowed down, appreciating the scene.

Several disciples noticed her and quickly composed themselves, bowing respectfully.

Heng Yu waved her hand, not wanting to disturb them, quickened her pace, and left the iris field. After a while, she reached the bamboo houses where the Undying Sect disciples were staying.

She found a shady spot outside the bamboo grove, sat down cross-legged, and plucked some grass, quickly weaving it into a lifelike dragonfly. Closing her eyes, she focused her divine sense and controlled the dragonfly, sending it towards Liaowu’s window.

Then, she made the dragonfly bump against the window.

The noise wasn’t soft. Liaowu opened the window, looked at the dragonfly, then at the bamboo grove. He could faintly see a figure in a red dress.

    He extended his index finger.

This dragonfly, controlled by Heng Yu’s divine sense, was much more agile than the paper cat yesterday.

    It landed on his finger.

Liaowu lifted his hand and looked at the dragonfly. “Why are you here?”

    The dragonfly didn’t move.

    “Are you bored?” he guessed.

He tilted his head slightly. “This poor monk is almost finished with my work. Shall we explore the Sword Sect together?”

He gently picked up the dragonfly by a wing and placed it on his shoulder.

Then he tidied up his books, put on his prayer beads, and left the house, heading towards the bamboo grove.

As he approached Heng Yu, she withdrew her divine sense from the dragonfly and opened her eyes.

The Sword Sect also used cranes for transportation.

Heng Yu and Liaowu each rode a crane towards the Sword Testing Grounds.

Heng Yu looked down from the crane, seeing a small part of the Sword Sect.

She had inquired about the Sword Sect beforehand — it had eighteen main peaks and seventy-two secondary peaks, each main peak overseen by a late Nascent Soul cultivator.

This alone showed the sect’s profound strength.

“What are you thinking about?” Liaowu suddenly asked.

His voice was slightly distorted by the wind.

Heng Yu turned to look at him.

He wore a green robe today, looking like any other Buddhist cultivator, but his ethereal aura set him apart.

Like a solitary moon in the sky.

Heng Yu narrowed her eyes slightly. “Admiring the scenery. But honestly, I prefer the Undying Sect’s scenery.”

She had spent over a month in the Hehuan Sect after arriving in this world, but she had mostly stayed in her courtyard, healing. And during that time, she hadn’t felt any connection to this world and hadn’t paid much attention to the scenery.

So, her impression of the Hehuan Sect mainly came from the original body’s memories.

Compared to the Hehuan Sect or the Sword Sect, she found the Undying Sect, untouched by mortal dust, more comfortable.

“After the Dharma Assembly, Lord Luo can cultivate in seclusion at the Undying Sect to break through to Nascent Soul,” Liaowu invited.

    He clearly knew her plans.

Heng Yu smiled and asked, “I’m the Hehuan Sect’s Young Master. Wouldn’t it be strange if I went to the Undying Sect instead of my own sect to break through? What would people think? And what excuse would you use to bring me back to the Undying Sect?”

She looked at him, their eyes meeting.

The Undying Sect was a sacred ground of Buddhism and didn’t casually allow outsiders to enter. She had been able to enter before because she wanted to travel with them to the Sword Sect for the Dharma Assembly. The reason was valid, and she had Liaowu’s guarantee.

Liaowu opened his mouth to speak.

But Heng Yu shook her head first. “I’ll only visit the Undying Sect once in this lifetime. You can accompany me back to Hua City for my seclusion.”

Liaowu’s hand trembled slightly. He looked at her seriously, his gaze insistent. “Why only once? Won’t you visit me for tea and chess when you’re traveling in the future?”

Heng Yu hadn’t expected him to press the matter.

She quickly changed her answer. “Alright, I’m willing.”

    He stared at her intently.

Heng Yu smiled casually. “I said I’m willing. Why are you still looking at me like that?”

“After you complete your mission and return to the Hehuan Sect, if you encounter any trouble, will you send me a message?” Liaowu asked.

“Of course. Didn’t you agree to be my attachment? Who else would I turn to if not you? I can’t rely on my unreliable master,” Heng Yu couldn’t help but complain about You Yun, trying to lighten the mood.

    “…”

Liaowu’s expression and voice remained calm.

No, that wasn’t the right word.

    It was restraint —

“…At that time, Lord Luo won’t be anywhere near the Undying Sect and definitely won’t send me a message, right?”

    Heng Yu: “…”

    She didn’t answer.

She wanted to say that after she completed her mission and he overcame his tribulation, they should part ways and never meet again. By then, she would have adapted to the Canglan Continent and could truly pursue her path of freedom and detachment, while he would have achieved enlightenment and shouldered the responsibilities of innate Buddha bones.

    Wouldn’t that be perfect?

But seeing the stubbornness in his eyes, she couldn’t bring herself to say it.

She scratched her head, feeling slightly frustrated. “Can we drop this topic? It’s too early to talk about this. My mission has a time limit of ten years.”

“…Alright.” Seeing her rare frustration, he didn’t press the matter further.

The atmosphere between them became slightly awkward.

But soon, the two cranes, crying out loudly, descended through the clouds, nearing their destination.

As the crane landed, Heng Yu jumped off, her sword in hand, the bells on her bracelet jingling.

The Sword Testing Grounds were vast, large enough to accommodate over a hundred thousand people.

Heng Yu looked around, seeing cultivators in various sect uniforms.

    “Quite lively,” she commented.

Liaowu’s expression was calm. “Let’s go get our soul plates.”

Hearing his words, Heng Yu relaxed, knowing the awkwardness had passed for now.

    “What are those?” she asked.

“Soul plates record our scores. Each victory in a competition earns points based on the difficulty.” Liaowu pointed to three towering pillars in the center of the grounds. “These pillars display the rankings for Qi Refining, Foundation Establishment, and Nascent Soul.”

He walked forward as he explained.

    Heng Yu followed.

The soul plate distribution point was at the front of the grounds, and there was a long queue.

Heng Yu saw a familiar face in the line — Mu Huan.

Mu Huan stood in the middle of the line, looking bored.

Suddenly, she noticed Heng Yu and Liaowu, and a seductive smile appeared on her face.

She waved at Liaowu. “Senior Brother Liaowu, what are you doing here?”

Hearing her excited voice, Heng Yu and Liaowu finally noticed her.

Heng Yu raised an eyebrow and said to Liaowu, “Senior Brother Liaowu, your admirer has appeared.”

Liaowu looked at Mu Huan and bowed with his hands joined together. “So Lord Mu is here as well.”

His tone was polite but distant, neither rude nor familiar.

He turned to Heng Yu. “Lord Luo, please wait here.” In contrast, his attitude towards her was much warmer.

Liaowu went to join the queue, not wanting Heng Yu to be jostled by the crowd.

Heng Yu stood there, watching him.

He stood out in the noisy crowd, like a clear breeze and bright moon.

Seemingly sensing her gaze, he looked up and smiled at her gently, as if asking what she was looking at.

    What was she looking at?

This Sword Testing Grounds could hold a hundred thousand people. Countless people passed by her.

But her gaze was fixed only on him.

In ancient legends, sirens lured sailors with their enchanting songs, causing ships to crash.

This Buddha-son, unknowingly, wove a net with his smile, his words, and his endless gentleness.

But he wasn’t a siren, he was a Buddha-son, and she wasn’t a sailor, destined not to be lured to her doom, despite knowing the danger.

  • Ferrying the Buddha 55

    Chapter 55

The wooden house was spacious and simple, furnished only with the essentials. Heng Yu opened the window, revealing the purple irises outside. She placed the clivia from the airship on the windowsill, brewed some tea, and started reading a formation book, trying to improve her foundational knowledge.

She read from morning till evening.

    A knock interrupted her thoughts.

She opened the door, not surprised to see Wu Mei. “I thought you’d come earlier.”

Wu Mei tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. Her purple dress flowed gracefully, the color matching the irises outside, making her look ethereal.

“When did you arrive?” Heng Yu invited her in and poured her some tea. “This morning. How long have you been at the Sword Sect?”

Wu Mei twirled a strand of hair around her finger, her expression languid. “Speaking of which, I have to complain. You have no idea, Yu Xia has been at the sect almost this entire year. I’ve suffered so much trying to sneak in and find him.”

Heng Yu took her words with a grain of salt.

Earlier, at the Sword Sect’s mountain gate, the mere mention of Wu Mei’s name had made the inner disciples uncomfortable. Clearly, she had caused some trouble.

“What heinous deeds did you commit to sneak into the Sword Sect?” Heng Yu asked.

Wu Mei raised her chin slightly, her expression both seductive and arrogant. “I did nothing heinous. I charmed my way in and made Yu Xia invite me personally.”

Heng Yu couldn’t help but laugh.

Regardless, Wu Mei had definitely been at the Sword Sect for a long time.

“Most of the disciples qualified for the Dharma Assembly are out on missions. Will our sect send any Nascent Soul cultivators?” Heng Yu asked.

“Of course. The sect will also send some Qi Refining disciples to broaden their horizons.” Wu Mei looked at Heng Yu. “I received a message from my master two days ago. Guess who’s leading the group this time?”

The way she asked meant the Nascent Soul cultivator was someone close to her.

And in the Hehuan Sect, there was only one Nascent Soul cultivator close to her.

A smile touched Heng Yu’s lips. “I didn’t expect Master to personally lead the group.”

Her master was a late Nascent Soul cultivator. Cultivators at his level usually spent their time in seclusion, trying to reach Soul Formation.

But after thinking about it, Heng Yu realized this was typical of her master.

He was carefree and probably bored of staying in the sect, so he came out to have some fun and perhaps find some romance.

Wu Mei refilled her teacup and played with the bracelet on her wrist. “How’s your inner sect mission going? Any progress?”

Heng Yu took a sip of tea and smiled without replying.

Wu Mei glared at her playfully. “Tell me! I can give you some advice.”

“You’re so enthusiastic. It seems your mission is almost complete,” Heng Yu said indifferently.

    Her own mission…

Wu Mei didn’t want to talk about it.

She finished her tea and left, not wanting to give Heng Yu any more ammunition for teasing.

After Wu Mei left, Heng Yu continued reading the ancient text on formations.

As the sun set and the moonlight filled the sky, Heng Yu finished the book and was about to pick another one when she heard a knock on the door, accompanied by the faint jingling of bells.

    Who was it this time?

Heng Yu rubbed her forehead. “Could it be Mu Huan? This is getting lively.”

Mu Huan’s revealing dresses were always adorned with bells that jingled with every movement. And perhaps due to her cultivation technique, the seemingly random jingling always sounded strangely melodic.

The door slowly opened, and Mu Huan, seeing Heng Yu’s exasperated expression, smiled faintly. “You don’t seem surprised it’s me.”

    “Process of elimination.”

Mu Huan’s eyes widened, and she stamped her foot. “I came to greet you as soon as I arrived. Can’t you be more welcoming?”

    Heng Yu shrugged helplessly.

Looking at Mu Huan, she rubbed her forehead.

With so many people with different agendas gathered here, plus her troublemaking master, things were about to get interesting.

“Did you come with the Dao Sect’s airship?” Heng Yu changed the subject.

    Mu Huan pouted. “Yes.”

A faint smile appeared on Heng Yu’s face, and her tone softened slightly. “Go back and rest.”

Since Mu Huan had come to greet her first, she didn’t mind being a little nicer.

“Alright. Are you free tomorrow? Come with me to see Senior Brother Liaowu. I’ve been thinking about him,” Mu Huan said, seizing the opportunity.

Heng Yu’s smile vanished instantly. “What does your longing for Liaowu have to do with me? Goodbye.”

She stepped back and slammed the door shut.

    Mu Huan: “…”

She shouldn’t have expected anything from Luo Heng Yu.

Closing Mu Huan out, Heng Yu clapped her hands, brushing off nonexistent dust, and returned to the window.

Bathed in the moonlight, she suddenly lost interest in reading. She took out a clean sheet of paper and quickly folded it into a lifelike paper cat. She dabbed a bit of formation liquid onto the cat’s eyes, easily attaching a sliver of her divine sense to it.

Closing her eyes, she controlled the paper cat with her divine sense, sending it out the window, across the Hehuan Sect’s residences, to the Undying Sect’s residences, and finally, with a flip, onto Liaowu’s windowsill.

Inside the bamboo house, Liaowu had just finished bathing.

Still slightly damp, he sat cross-legged on the bed, reading the Buddhist stories Heng Yu had compiled.

Suddenly, he heard a faint noise from outside. He put down his brush, opened the window, and saw a paper cat sitting on the sill, staring at him.

    The scene was slightly eerie.

Liaowu stared at the paper cat for a few seconds, sensing a familiar divine sense. “Lord Luo?”

He gently picked up the cat and placed it on a pile of scriptures.

    “Can you hear me?”

The paper cat twitched, indicating it could.

Liaowu, amused, touched the cat’s forehead with his finger.

The light touch made the cat take two steps back.

He chuckled. “Can you feel my touch?”

The paper cat moved forward, bumping against his finger.

“Are you having trouble sleeping? No, you must be studying formations. I was reading the Buddhist stories you compiled and thought of a few new ones. Do you want to hear them?”

With her divine sense attached to the cat, Heng Yu could hear his voice.

She listened while reading a formation book, her previously waning interest rekindled.

After Liaowu finished telling the stories, he fell silent and began organizing his scriptures. After finishing, it was already late. He picked up the paper cat and touched its forehead. “This poor monk is going to sleep now. Are you going to rest?”

The familiar divine sense attached to the cat detached and retreated.

Sensing it had become an ordinary paper cat, Liaowu bent down and blew out the candle.

In the moonlight, he walked to the bed and gently placed the cat on the bedside table.

Heng Yu had intended to read all night.

At her cultivation level, she didn’t need sleep. But after withdrawing her divine sense from the paper cat, she couldn’t focus on the formation book.

She closed the book, blew out the candle, and fell asleep on the soft bed.

    She slept soundly.

Waking up the next morning, Heng Yu continued reading.

She finally finished all the books Liaowu had borrowed for her from the Undying Sect’s Scripture Pavilion in the afternoon.

She put the books away in her storage ring.

“I wonder when Master and the others will arrive.”

The Dharma Assembly was four days away. They should arrive within the next two days.

Heng Yu decided to greet her master first, then explore the Sword Sect. It was only proper for a disciple to greet her master after a long separation.

She didn’t have to wait long. Near dusk, a large airship arrived at the Sword Sect.

A handsome man in purple robes stood on the deck, his every move exuding charm.

He stroked the jade pendant at his waist. “I wonder how Heng Yu’s mission is going. Such an unfilial disciple, not even sending me sweet messages or regular updates.”

He muttered to himself, his expression slightly mournful.

Although they had been thousands of miles apart, Heng Yu had still sent messages. However, communication wasn’t easy, so she only sent brief greetings every few months.

Other disciples, like Wu Mei and Mu Huan, did the same, but You Yun was still unhappy. Didn’t a generous and charming master like him deserve special treatment from his disciple?

But his melancholy didn’t last long. As the Hehuan Sect’s airship landed, a middle-aged, mid-stage Nascent Soul cultivator from the Sword Sect flew over to greet him.

You Yun’s expression instantly changed, becoming calm and composed, exuding the air of a master.

He bowed with a gesture, returning the Sword Sect cultivator’s greeting.

After the exchange of pleasantries, the cultivator invited You Yun to the main hall for a discussion.

You Yun nodded, agreeing to go. But before leaving, he called over a disciple and took off his storage ring. “Give this to Luo Heng Yu.”

The disciple respectfully accepted the ring with both hands and bowed.

Soon, Heng Yu met the other Hehuan Sect disciples and received her master’s storage ring.

Examining the exquisitely carved ring, Heng Yu realized it hadn’t been bound by blood, so her divine sense could easily enter it. The space within wasn’t large, containing a pile of spirit stones, some books on formations, and a collection of rare formation materials.

Seeing the books and materials, Heng Yu was surprised, then smiled. “I only casually mentioned to Master that I was studying formations, and he sent me such a generous gift even before arriving.”

This was the benefit of having a powerful backer.

Heng Yu smiled, put away the storage ring, and decided to thank her master later.

  • Ferrying the Buddha 54

    Chapter 54

Putting away the jade pendant, Heng Yu returned to her room.

She smelled the faint sandalwood scent clinging to her clothes from Liaowu’s room.

The intricately carved wooden hairpin lay on the table. Heng Yu picked it up and tied up her hair, looking at her reflection in the distant mirror.

Sitting cross-legged on the bed, she clenched her right hand, feeling the surge of spiritual energy within her.

“At this rate, I should be able to completely refine this spiritual energy in four or five days.”

“I’ll stay in my room for the next few days, cultivating and studying formations, preparing for the Dharma Assembly.”

After muttering to herself, Heng Yu closed her eyes and began cultivating.

Time flew by. On the eve of their arrival at the Sword Sect, Heng Yu finally refined all the spiritual energy, strengthening her foundation.

Inside the quiet room, she slowly opened her eyes.

It was late at night, and the room was dark. Heng Yu snapped her fingers, and the candle on the table lit up, illuminating the room.

She clenched her fists, sensing the concentration of spiritual energy in her dantian.

“I’m just a hair’s breadth away from Nascent Soul now.”

“After the Dharma Assembly, I’ll find a place to seclude myself and strive to break through as soon as possible. Peak Foundation Establishment was enough in the Undying Sect’s territory, but in the Central Continent, with its abundance of talented cultivators, Nascent Soul is safer.”

Heng Yu had already decided on her next steps.

Of course, she hadn’t considered Liaowu in her plans, because she knew he would be with her.

Breaking through to Nascent Soul was dangerous and required facing one’s inner demons. Traveling alone, without her sect to protect her, Liaowu wouldn’t let her find a place to break through by herself.

She was more worried about another matter — “I wonder how many admiration points I need to reach Nascent Soul.”

She had used over a thousand points to go from late Foundation Establishment to the peak.

Reaching Nascent Soul would require several thousand, perhaps even tens of thousands. Her current four thousand points might not be enough.

Heng Yu smiled faintly. “It seems I’ll have to give it my all at the Dharma Assembly.”

This Dharma Assembly was a grand event for the younger generation of the Canglan Continent.

Outstanding individuals of the same generation would compete and exchange ideas. The competitions weren’t limited to arena battles but took various forms.

The most talented cultivators would naturally stand out, their names spreading throughout the continent.

If she could make a name for herself at the assembly, she would definitely gain a lot of admiration points.

Someone as poor in admiration points as her had to seize this opportunity!

As Heng Yu finished her thoughts, she noticed the first light of dawn outside — it was almost morning.

The airship’s speed had also slowed down, indicating they were nearing the Sword Sect’s territory.

Heng Yu stretched and got up to change.

She rummaged through her storage ring and chose a vibrant red dress with lifelike Hehuan flowers embroidered on the hem.

She chose this dress not only for its beauty but also because the Hehuan flower pattern represented her sect.

As a young master of the Hehuan Sect, representing her sect at the Dharma Assembly, she had to dress appropriately.

After changing, Heng Yu let down her hair, stood before the bronze mirror, and quickly braided it into a simple yet elegant style.

The airship not only slowed down but also began to descend.

Liaowu, waking up from his cultivation, tidied up his room and went out, intending to wait on deck.

Leaving his room, he naturally walked to Heng Yu’s door and knocked gently.

    The door opened quickly.

Liaowu, accustomed to seeing her in Daoist robes or simple dresses, was now captivated by her stunning red dress.

Before she could speak, he complimented her with a smile, “This dress suits you very much, Lord Luo.”

Heng Yu smiled faintly and gave him an approving look.

—She hadn’t even hinted, and he had already complimented her. This Buddha-son was truly making progress.

“Let’s go to the deck,” Heng Yu said.

Liaowu stepped aside, letting her out, and then walked beside her through the narrow corridor.

    Soon, they reached the deck.

Many disciples were already there. The Foundation Establishment and Nascent Soul disciples maintained their composure, while the Qi Refining disciples, led by Liaonian, were leaning over the railing, looking at the Sword Sect below.

Liaoyuan, bored, leaned against the railing.

He casually glanced over and noticed Heng Yu emerging from the cabin, his gaze drawn to her.

    Pure admiration filled his eyes.

Heng Yu noticed his gaze and glanced at him.

Their eyes met briefly, then they both looked away.

“Let’s go and see the Sword Sect,” Heng Yu said to Liaowu.

They walked to an empty corner and looked out at the Sword Sect —

The Hehuan Sect was located in a scenic area of the Central Continent, pursuing the path of immortality through dual cultivation.

The Undying Sect was in the northwest, in the Endless Desert, seeking immortality through Buddhism.

Now, before them, were endless white jade steps. Atop these steps stood the Sword Sect, its sword intent piercing the heavens.

The Sword Sect had dominated the Canglan Continent for millennia, its history filled with legends and countless heroes. Just looking at it from afar inspired awe.

Although Heng Yu felt no reverence, she was still impressed by this magnificent sight.

Just then, the barrier around the airship rippled, as if encountering resistance.

Someone in the Sword Sect noticed the disturbance. An elder with a sword on his back flew up, saw the airship, and quickly identified Master Yuanxin, bowing with a gesture. “So it’s Fellow Daoist Yuanxin of the Undying Sect. Welcome.”

“Greetings, Fellow Daoist Chen,” Yuanxin returned the greeting with his hands joined together.

    They were acquainted.

After exchanging pleasantries, the Sword Sect elder took out a token, activated a formation, and allowed the airship to enter the Sword Sect’s territory.

The airship landed on a large platform in front of the mountain gate.

This platform was vast, specifically built for airships. Besides the Undying Sect’s airship, there were many others of various sizes.

Just looking at the numerous airships, one could imagine the scale of this Dharma Assembly.

The elder flew over to Yuanxin and greeted him warmly. “Fellow Daoists from other sects have also arrived. They’re currently discussing the Dao in the main hall. Allow me to escort you there, Fellow Daoist Yuanxin.”

    Yuanxin agreed.

He looked around, his gaze finally settling on Liaowu and Liaoyuan. “I leave these disciples in your care. If any trouble arises, you two will be held responsible.”

Faced with Yuanxin’s instructions, even the usually playful Liaoyuan became serious and bowed respectfully. “Yes, Elder.”

    Liaowu also bowed. “Yes, Elder.”

Yuanxin nodded in satisfaction. The Dharma Assembly was a competition for the younger generation; he naturally couldn’t interfere.

After looking at the disciples again, Yuanxin left with the Sword Sect elder.

After they left, the Undying Sect disciples began whispering excitedly.

Most of them were visiting the Sword Sect, or even traveling so far from home, for the first time. Their excitement was understandable. They hadn’t dared to express their true feelings in front of the two Nascent Soul cultivators, but now that they were gone, they relaxed.

Amidst the chatter, several Sword Sect inner disciples walked towards Liaowu.

The leader was a handsome man with sharp eyebrows and eyes, his white and black Sword Sect inner disciple robes fitting him perfectly. He carried a heavy sword on his back, larger and heavier than ordinary swords.

    Heng Yu guessed his identity.

    His introduction confirmed her guess.

“Yu Xia of the Sword Sect, greetings to all Fellow Daoists,” Yu Xia bowed, a friendly smile on his face.

There was only one inner disciple in the Sword Sect who specialized in heavy swords, and that was Yu Xia, the chief disciple.

Heng Yu knew this because he was Wu Mei’s target.

Liaowu and Liaoyuan returned the greeting with their hands joined together and introduced themselves.

Heng Yu bowed with a gesture. “Luo Heng Yu of the Hehuan Sect, greetings to Fellow Daoist Yu.”

Hearing her introduction, Yu Xia remained calm, not surprised. “I’ve heard of you, Lord Luo.”

Heng Yu smiled. “Did you hear about me from Wu Mei?”

When she mentioned “Wu Mei,” Heng Yu noticed that the inner disciples behind Yu Xia looked uncomfortable, their expressions showing… anger.

Heng Yu guessed that Wu Mei had caused some trouble in the Sword Sect, but she didn’t show any reaction.

In contrast, Yu Xia’s expression remained natural.

He waved his hand and smiled. “Not exactly, but I did hear from Lord Mei that Lord Luo is currently traveling with Fellow Daoists from the Undying Sect.”

After answering Heng Yu, Yu Xia turned to Liaowu and gestured invitingly. “The Undying Sect’s accommodations have been arranged. Allow me to escort you there. The Hehuan Sect’s accommodations are nearby, so Lord Luo can come along as well.”

This was the Sword Sect’s territory, and their arrangements were reasonable, so Liaowu had no objections.

Yu Xia led the way, with Liaowu walking beside him.

As they walked, Yu Xia described the Sword Sect’s scenery.

Reaching a cluster of bamboo houses, Yu Xia smiled and said to Liaowu, “Here we are. These bamboo houses are all for the Undying Sect. You can arrange the specific rooms yourselves. It’s not appropriate for the Sword Sect to interfere.”

Seeing Liaowu nod in agreement, Yu Xia bowed. “The Sect Leader has entrusted me with receiving guests. I have some matters to attend to, so I’ll take my leave. If Buddha-son Liaowu needs anything, you can send me a message. As long as I’m not cultivating, I’ll come immediately.”

“Thank you for your trouble,” Liaowu replied gently.

After Yu Xia and the others left, Liaowu extended his divine sense, quickly counted the number of bamboo houses, and began assigning rooms to the disciples.

His prestige in both the Undying Sect and the Buddhist sect was very high, so no one questioned his arrangements, which were fair and reasonable.

After arranging the ordinary disciples’ accommodations, Liaowu turned to Liaoyuan and said gently, “Liaoyuan, choose one of the two bamboo houses in the front row.”

The remaining one would naturally be his.

Liaoyuan raised an eyebrow and casually agreed.

He rested his hands behind his head, knowing Liaowu still had things to discuss with Heng Yu, and smiled, not wanting to intrude. “Then I’ll take the one on the left. There’s no difference anyway.” He walked towards the leftmost bamboo house.

After everyone dispersed, Liaowu turned to Heng Yu, who was sitting lazily nearby.

He walked over to her and bent down slightly. “The Hehuan Sect’s accommodations are next door. This poor monk will escort Lord Luo there.”

As a representative of her sect, she naturally had to stay with the other Hehuan Sect disciples.

Heng Yu knew this and stood up, gesturing with her chin, her eyes bright. “Lead the way.”

Liaowu smiled faintly and led her towards a cluster of wooden houses surrounded by purple irises.

Although he said “next door,” it was actually quite a distance away.

This was probably the Sword Sect’s way of preventing conflicts between the different sects. Such precautions were common during Dharma Assemblies. Although the Canglan Continent was generally peaceful, conflicts were inevitable in the cultivation world, where strength reigned supreme. Private duels were common and difficult to prevent.

“Will you be very busy every day during the Dharma Assembly?”

“Probably. Although this poor monk doesn’t care about winning or losing, I still have to bring honor to the sect. And I also need to protect the disciples,” Liaowu replied.

“Then—” Heng Yu looked up at him.

    “Hmm?”

“I’ll be busy too,” Heng Yu smiled.

    Liaowu smiled back.

He and Heng Yu were opposites. She was adept at reading people, while he wasn’t. But after spending time together, he could often understand her intentions from a single look or a subtle hint, without her needing to explain explicitly.

“If Lord Luo doesn’t intend to stay with your fellow disciples, why not join this poor monk? We can look out for each other.”

Heng Yu snapped her fingers, pleased with his understanding. “I don’t mind at all.”

The wooden houses were now close. Liaowu stopped at the edge of the iris field.

He joined his hands together, the cinnabar mole between his eyebrows making his eyes seem slightly flushed. Although he was ethereal, he was also strangely alluring.

“We’ve arrived. This poor monk will take his leave now.”

Heng Yu stood there, watching him leave.

After he was out of sight, she turned around, about to enter the wooden houses hidden among the irises, when she heard a sharp whistling sound.

Heng Yu raised her right hand and caught a fourth-grade spiritual fruit in midair.

She casually wiped it and took a large bite. The fruit was crisp and sweet, surprisingly delicious.

After swallowing, Heng Yu looked up at the person who had thrown the fruit.

The man standing in front of the wooden houses had striking features and a cold, aloof aura, like moonlight frost.

If one didn’t know his identity, they wouldn’t have guessed that such a holy and elegant man, seemingly a symbol of light, would have the highest admiration value among the younger generation of the Hehuan Sect.

“Lord Chi, it’s been a while,” Heng Yu greeted him.

Chi smiled brightly, a halo seemingly appearing behind him. “I’ve been anticipating Lord Luo’s arrival. It’s been a year since we last saw each other at the sect, but Lord Luo is as captivating as ever.”

Heng Yu walked through the field of irises.

Her movements were graceful, her red dress swirling around her like blooming Hehuan flowers, their fragrance alluring.

She knew Chi had always been interested in the original body, wanting to pursue her.

However, the original body had never reciprocated.

Heng Yu naturally wasn’t interested in him either.

She walked up to Chi and smiled brightly.

The cold and aloof beauty’s sudden smile stunned even Chi, a seasoned player.

As he was momentarily mesmerized, Heng Yu asked, “Where is my room?”

Chi smiled gently. “Right next to mine.”

    Heng Yu wasn’t swayed.

She looked around. “It seems not everyone has arrived yet. I’ll just find a room myself.”

The light in Chi’s star-like eyes dimmed instantly.

He didn’t say anything, just stared at her, his previously cheerful expression replaced by a look of utter dejection, like an abandoned puppy, more pitiful than threatening.

Heng Yu clicked her tongue inwardly. This cultivation world wasn’t lacking in Oscar-worthy actors.

Liaoyuan and now Chi, both the same.

Heng Yu feigned indifference and waved her hand, walking towards the innermost wooden house. “Since Lord Chi has nothing else to say, I’ll take my leave.”

Entering the house, Heng Yu casually glanced back and saw Chi still standing there, watching her. Her sharp eyes could discern his expression even from this distance —

    He still looked slightly sad.

He was truly committed to his act.

Thinking this, Heng Yu smiled and opened the door to the wooden house.

Only after she was completely out of sight did Chi’s sad expression disappear.

He stroked an iris flower, a playful smile on his face. “Judging by Lord Luo and the Buddha-son’s interaction, her mission is progressing much smoother than I expected. It seems I underestimated her.”

    Chapter 53

Opening the door, Heng Yu surveyed the room. It was spacious, with a soft bed, a desk, and ample space to move around. A thriving clivia sat on the desk. Heng Yu touched its leaves, guessing it was from Liaowu. She placed her sword on the desk, sat on the bed, and took out the jade slip containing the Demon Detection Formation, immersing her divine sense in it.

The complex formation was identical to the one she had seen at Binglian Lake. Heng Yu focused on its core. After a while, she withdrew her divine sense, feeling dizzy — the formation was too vast, consuming her mental energy. She poured herself a cup of water, which helped alleviate the dizziness, then sat down and began refining her spiritual energy.

For the next few days, Heng Yu barely left her room, alternating between studying the formation and refining spiritual energy.

    Five days passed.

After finishing her cultivation, Heng Yu stretched and stood up. “I can’t stay cooped up forever.”

Taking her sword, she left her room. Passing by Liaowu’s door, she hesitated, then decided not to disturb him. He needed to focus on his cultivation.

She walked along the corridor and reached the deck.

The spacious deck was bustling with disciples meditating, cultivating, or discussing Buddhist teachings. Master Yuanxin sat in the center, meditating with his eyes closed, seemingly oblivious to everything around him.

The airship flew swiftly, the scenery below a blur. A large spiritual energy barrier surrounded the airship, only allowing a gentle breeze to enter.

Heng Yu’s hair was loose, not tied up.

The breeze blew her hair around her face, some strands tickling her forehead and eyebrows.

She raised her hand to brush them away.

A slender hand reached out from the side, a sandalwood bracelet around its wrist.

Heng Yu recognized Liaoyuan from the bracelet and instinctively stepped back, avoiding his hand.

Liaoyuan’s hand grasped at empty air. He withdrew it and chuckled ruefully. “He’s not here. There’s no need to avoid me like this.”

“There’s nothing to avoid between us,” Heng Yu emphasized.

Liaoyuan’s tone made it sound like she owed him something.

But they had only known each other for half a month and weren’t close at all.

Liaoyuan winked at her, his eyes playful. “True, but on the day we met, you dared to pull open my robes with your hairpin, exposing half my chest. Now, I can’t even help you with your hair. Isn’t this because of Senior Brother Liaowu?”

    He didn’t lower his voice.

Many disciples meditating nearby opened their eyes, exchanging glances. Even some Foundation Establishment and Nascent Soul disciples couldn’t help but eavesdrop.

Heng Yu winked back. “That only means Senior Brother Liaoyuan’s charms aren’t strong enough.”

Several monks looked at Liaoyuan, appraising his appearance — he was handsome and elegant, his eyes gentle and alluring.

They might be Buddhist cultivators, adhering to precepts, but that didn’t mean they had no appreciation for beauty.

    Wasn’t Liaoyuan charming enough?!

Sensing their gazes, Liaoyuan gritted his teeth inwardly: He would deal with these gossipy monks later.

He quickly composed himself and chuckled. “It’s not that my charms are lacking, but that Lord Luo favors Senior Brother Liaowu too much. Do the Hehuan Sect’s rules forbid having multiple partners? Has a goddess like Lord Luo never considered enjoying the blessings of multiple men?”

He leaned closer, as if wanting her to examine his face more closely.

“If the Hehuan Sect’s Young Master pursued two Buddha-sons simultaneously, wouldn’t that make you famous throughout the Canglan Continent? And the entire Hehuan Sect would remember your impressive feat. What do you think?”

    Gasps rippled through the crowd.

Even Master Yuanxin, who had been meditating in the center, opened his eyes.

    Heng Yu looked at Liaoyuan.

She was good at reading people, but she still couldn’t understand his intentions.

Everyone acted with a purpose, unless they were completely impulsive.

    So, what was Liaoyuan’s purpose?

After a moment of thought, Heng Yu smiled faintly.

Just as she was about to speak, a familiar, cold voice came from behind her. “Enjoying the blessings of multiple men? Or are you using her to temper your heart and further your Buddhist cultivation?”

His hidden intentions exposed, Liaoyuan’s smile faltered.

He raised an eyebrow and turned to Liaowu, his tone slightly defiant.

He transmitted his voice to Liaowu, his expression mocking. “Senior Brother, are you talking about yourself? The one using Lord Luo to temper his heart and further his cultivation is clearly you.”

    Liaowu’s hand clenched slightly.

He chuckled self-deprecatingly, then looked past Liaoyuan at Heng Yu.

Heng Yu walked over to Liaowu, bypassing Liaoyuan. “Why are you here?”

“I went to the kitchen and saw them making brown sugar buns. I brought two for you. I didn’t find you in your room, so I guessed you were on deck,” Liaowu replied.

    “Where are the buns?”

    “In my room.”

“I’ve had enough fresh air. Let’s go eat.”

Watching them leave, Liaoyuan raised an eyebrow, a faint smile on his lips.

“Liaoyuan,” Master Yuanxin, who had been meditating, suddenly appeared beside him. “Although you cultivate the Joyful Buddha path, your words just now were inappropriate.”

    Liaoyuan bowed. “Elder is right.”

Leading Heng Yu to his room, Liaowu realized it wasn’t much larger than hers. With both of them inside, it felt a bit cramped.

Heng Yu didn’t mind and sat down on a chair.

Seeing a clivia on Liaowu’s desk, she smiled: It seemed the one in her room was indeed from him.

Two brown sugar buns sat on a plate on the table. The melted brown sugar had seeped into the buns, giving them a yellowish tint.

The buns were still steaming, freshly made.

Heng Yu picked one up and took a bite.

The soft, warm bun filled her mouth with the sweet taste of brown sugar.

Liaowu sat opposite her, watching her quietly.

After she finished the bun, he said, “Don’t mind Liaoyuan’s words.”

Heng Yu shook her head. “There’s nothing to mind. He’s playing, and so am I. I didn’t lose anything.”

Looking at her, Liaowu suddenly said, “This poor monk feels that Lord Luo’s demeanor is different when you’re with Liaoyuan.”

She was more lively and sharp-tongued with Liaoyuan, like a blooming Hehuan flower, captivatingly beautiful. Liaowu understood why Liaoyuan kept approaching her, even after being rebuffed.

But she rarely showed this side of herself to him.

Heng Yu blinked, not immediately understanding his deeper meaning.

But then she felt the identity jade pendant at her waist warm slightly, indicating a fluctuation in her admiration points. The warmth made her realize the implication of his words.

She stood up and leaned closer to him. “Then tell me, if Mu Huan and I were both standing before you, would you treat us the same?”

Her eyes widened slightly, as if threatening him to say “yes.”

This playful defiance was also rare for him to see.

A smile flickered in Liaowu’s eyes. “No.”

Lord Luo was different from other women in his eyes… It wasn’t about romantic love. Since that day, guided by Buddha to meet her in the south, a special bond had formed between them. He shouldn’t differentiate between people, but his tribulation of love had made her his destined partner.

This bond was like a test from Buddha.

    And also like a gift.

“Then this poor monk understands,” Liaowu said.

Heng Yu sat back down and picked up the other bun.

After finishing, she clapped her hands, stood up, said “Let’s go,” and left his room.

Closing the door behind her, she took out her jade pendant and infused it with spiritual energy.

    Admiration points — 4000.

  • Ferrying the Buddha 52

    Chapter 52

After sitting down, Heng Yu carefully examined the chessboard.

The black and white pieces were intermingled, seemingly in a stalemate.

The Buddhist cultivator sat opposite her, not rushing her, giving her time to analyze the board.

After a moment, Heng Yu said, “Senior, I’m ready.”

The Buddhist cultivator picked up a white piece and, despite being blind, placed it accurately on the board.

Heng Yu rolled up her sleeve, picked up a black piece, and placed it on the board without hesitation.

    They both played quickly.

As the Buddhist cultivator had said, his skills were average.

    So, the game remained close.

After about a quarter of an hour, the Buddhist cultivator chuckled softly. “Your moves are straightforward and honorable. A strategy of direct confrontation, open and aboveboard.”

Hearing his comment, Heng Yu raised an eyebrow slightly.

This senior seemed to recognize her. Of course, it wasn’t surprising. She was the only guest in the Undying Sect recently.

But what was strange was that he seemed to have deliberately invited her to play this game.

Judging a person by their chess moves.

Was he trying to deduce her character through her playing style?

“You flatter me, Senior,” Heng Yu replied with a smile, suppressing her doubts, and continued playing.

Gradually, the black pieces gained the upper hand. Heng Yu placed her pieces decisively, her confidence evident.

The Buddhist cultivator opposite her played slower and slower, finally giving up and putting down his white piece. “The outcome is clear. Let’s end this game here. I’ll treat you to some tea.”

The Buddhist cultivator took out a tea set from his storage ring and brewed some tea. His movements were fluid and graceful, a pleasant sight to behold, making one forget his blindness.

After brewing the tea, he poured a cup for Heng Yu first.

He pushed the teacup towards her. “Have some tea.”

Perhaps it was his accommodating aura, like a vast and calm ocean, that made Heng Yu feel at ease despite knowing his cultivation was far higher than hers.

Heng Yu smiled and thanked him, picking up the teacup.

She couldn’t smell any fragrance, even after bringing the cup to her nose.

She blew on the tea to cool it down and took a sip.

A fragrant sweetness lingered in her mouth.

The next moment, a surge of gentle spiritual energy flowed through her meridians and dantian, noticeably reducing the gap between her and the Nascent Soul realm.

Heng Yu’s expression changed slightly. She took another sip.

The concentration of spiritual energy in her meridians and dantian increased again!

    “Senior…”

Heng Yu put down the teacup and looked at the blue-robed Buddhist cultivator, hesitating to speak.

This tea, capable of directly increasing one’s spiritual energy, was definitely not ordinary. Even Nascent Soul cultivators might not possess such a treasure, yet this senior had casually offered it to her…

    The Buddhist cultivator chuckled softly.

He wasn’t particularly handsome, but his presence was comforting.

“This tea is called Enlightenment Tea, made from the leaves of the Enlightenment Tree. Only a few ounces can be harvested every thousand years. And since the Enlightenment Tree is almost extinct, this tea is incredibly rare. Since you’ll be participating in the Dharma Assembly soon, consider this a small gift from this poor monk.”

    A gift?

    Heng Yu lowered her gaze.

If she had only been guessing before, she was now certain.

This person was Liaowu’s master, the leader of the Undying Sect, a late Nascent Soul cultivator named Yuancang. His blindfolded eyes seemed to be related to his cultivation technique.

But he called it a gift?

Was he thanking her for helping Liaowu with his tribulation of love, for strengthening his Buddhist path instead of ruining it?

Realizing this, Heng Yu chuckled softly. “In that case, I won’t stand on ceremony.”

She finished the tea in one gulp.

Heng Yu’s guess was correct. The Buddhist cultivator was indeed Yuancang.

Hearing her words, he smiled and refilled her cup. “With your current cultivation, two cups are enough.”

After finishing the second cup, Heng Yu felt the spiritual energy in her meridians surge. She had been vaguely sensing the edge of the Nascent Soul realm, but now, if she refined this spiritual energy completely, she could firmly place one foot into that realm!

Yuancang waved his sleeve, putting away the chessboard and tea set. “Focus on refining the spiritual energy. This poor monk will set up a protective formation for you and leave you to it.”

Heng Yu quickly bowed, thanking him for his generosity.

Yuancang smiled and shook his head, then cast a formation around the pavilion.

As soon as the formation was complete, he disappeared.

Heng Yu bowed again in the direction he had left, took out a meditation mat from her storage ring, and began refining the spiritual energy.

After leaving the pavilion, Yuancang appeared outside the barrier on the fourth floor of the Scripture Pavilion.

The Enforcement Elder, sensing the familiar spiritual energy fluctuation, slowly opened his eyes. “Sect Leader.”

“This poor monk came to see Liaowu,” Yuancang chuckled softly.

The Enforcement Elder took the token he offered, infused it with spiritual energy, and cast a series of hand seals.

    The barrier deactivated.

Yuancang took back the token and stepped inside, disappearing.

    Liaohe was diligently guarding Liaowu.

Hearing the commotion, he looked up, saw Yuancang, and quickly stood up, bowing. “Master.”

Yuancang nodded slightly, acknowledging his greeting.

He looked at the active formation, his gaze piercing through the swirling resentment and malice, and landing on Liaowu.

“Is this cultivation session almost over?” Yuancang asked.

    “Yes, Master,” Liaohe replied.

Just as he finished speaking, the dense negative energy within the formation dissipated as Liaowu resealed it within the prayer beads.

Soon, Liaowu, in his gray robes, walked out of the formation.

He saw Yuancang, bowed silently, and asked, “Master, what brings you here?”

“To see you,” Yuancang’s face was expressionless. “I heard you had a confrontation with Liaoyuan at the spiritual sea yesterday?”

Liaowu closed his eyes slowly. “This disciple… was moved by worldly desires. After this cultivation session, I will go to the Precept Hall to receive punishment and seek Buddha’s forgiveness.”

“There’s no need,” Yuancang shook his head slowly. “You cultivate the path of great compassion, which requires you to transcend the mortal world. But the tribulation of love requires you to experience it. Your actions are all for cultivation.”

He emphasized the words “for cultivation.”

He continued, “This master came here not to blame you, but to tell you that I’ve agreed to your request for the jade slip with the Demon Detection Formation. That young friend Luo is helping you with your tribulation of love. In a way, she has shown kindness to our Buddhist sect. A mere jade slip is nothing compared to that.”

Liaowu sensed something in his master’s words. “Master, have you met her?”

A smile finally appeared on Yuancang’s face. “I played a game of chess with her. Did she learn her chess skills from you? Her moves resemble yours.”

Liaowu joined his hands together, tacitly confirming it.

Without saying more, Yuancang walked to the bookshelves in the corner. The items on the shelves were ancient, bearing the marks of time. He closed his eyes and used his divine sense to locate the jade slip with the Demon Detection Formation. He walked to the second bookshelf, retrieved the jade slip using his sect leader token, and returned, offering it to Liaowu.

Liaowu reached out to take it.

Yuancang’s hand hovered above his, not letting go immediately.

He sighed deeply, his tone filled with worry. “Liaowu, be careful with your tribulation of love.”

Since Liaowu joined the Undying Sect, he had raised him like a son.

Just as he understood Liaowu’s chess style, he also understood his character.

Liaowu was loyal and compassionate. Carrying the hopes of the Buddhist sect for millennia, he would never betray them. But with his tribulation of love, even if that young friend Luo was only pursuing him for her inner sect mission and admiration points, Liaowu would still, in a way, be letting her down. How could he fulfill his duty to the Buddhist sect without hurting her?

Yuancang couldn’t see a solution. Even he, a late Nascent Soul cultivator, couldn’t interfere and help Liaowu.

So, Liaowu could only rely on himself.

    Liaowu lowered his gaze.

It was unclear if he understood his master’s meaning.

He felt the weight of the jade slip in his hand as his master let go.

He slowly tightened his grip on the jade slip.

Heng Yu had been refining the spiritual energy in the pavilion.

The surge of energy was vast, impossible to absorb completely in a short time. She decided to store it in her meridians and dantian, refining it completely during the ten-day journey to the Sword Sect.

This process took a long time. By the time she was almost finished, dawn was breaking.

    She slowly opened her eyes.

And saw Liaowu sitting cross-legged opposite her, clearly guarding her.

“Finished cultivating?” Liaowu opened his eyes and looked at her.

Heng Yu smiled. “Why are you here guarding me? Didn’t you say you had something to do?”

“I did, but it’s no longer necessary. And I heard from Master that you were cultivating here, so I came to check on you,” Liaowu said.

He had intended to go to the Precept Hall for punishment, but his master had waived it, so he was free to come here.

Heng Yu stood up and smiled. “Master Yuancang is truly impressive.”

That senior’s aura was as deep as the ocean, seemingly capable of encompassing all the sufferings of the world, exuding an air of compassion.

    He was instantly likeable.

But — Heng Yu looked at Liaowu. She had no doubt that given time, he would surpass Yuancang and become the true Light of Buddhism.

Liaowu stood up as well. “Shall I escort you back?”

“Are we leaving for the Sword Sect this morning?”

    “Yes.”

“It’s only about an hour until dawn. Stay here with me and watch the sunrise.”

Liaowu nodded silently, then said, “Let’s go to Binglian Lake. It’s the best place to watch the sunrise.”

    “Alright.”

Just as Heng Yu was about to leave the pavilion, Liaowu suddenly handed her a jade slip.

Heng Yu paused. “Is this the jade slip with the Demon Detection Formation?”

Liaowu nodded and explained gently, “This poor monk only casually mentioned it to Master, and he gave it to me directly. Lord Luo, you needn’t worry about this poor monk paying any price for it.”

Heng Yu smiled and took the jade slip.

Dawn was approaching; there was no time to waste if they wanted to see the sunrise.

They quickly arrived at Binglian Lake.

Liaowu flew across the ice flowers, carrying Heng Yu towards the center. Finding a suitable spot, he cast a series of hand seals.

A surge of spiritual energy flowed into the lake, and the scattered ice flowers gathered, their shapes shifting, forming two large lotuses.

Heng Yu sat on one of the lotuses.

Before the sun rose, she walked to the edge, squatted down, and played with the water.

She couldn’t tell where the water came from, but it wasn’t cold, but slightly warm — this lake was truly strange.

She scooped up some water and splashed it at Liaowu.

An invisible barrier blocked the water droplets.

    Heng Yu said, “That’s cheating.”

Liaowu, still meditating with his eyes closed, silently dispelled the barrier.

Seeing his obedience, Heng Yu decided not to splash him again.

She sat down on the lotus, took out the wooden hairpin holding her hair, and let her long, black hair cascade down her face, shoulders, and waist.

After a while, the sun slowly rose from the lake, its light gradually spreading across the water.

Heng Yu was bathed in the warm sunlight.

The rising sun was still dazzling. Heng Yu narrowed her eyes slightly and looked at Liaowu beside her.

The sunlight accentuated his handsome features.

Liaowu, seemingly sensing her gaze, turned to look at her, a gentle smile spreading across his face.

After watching the sunrise, Liaowu accompanied Heng Yu back to her room to pack.

There wasn’t much to pack, so they quickly left and headed towards the Undying Sect’s training grounds.

Almost every major sect had training grounds. The Sword Sect called it the Sword Testing Grounds. It was a large open space specifically for Qi Refining and Foundation Establishment disciples. Here, disciples could spar, trade items, and buy what they needed.

They were heading there because the disciples going to the Sword Sect were gathering there before departing on the airship.

Heng Yu and Liaowu arrived at the northeast corner of the training grounds, where many disciples, from Qi Refining to Nascent Soul, were already gathered.

Each wore different colored robes. Heng Yu, in her red dress and with her long, loose hair, stood out in the crowd.

The more highly cultivated and composed disciples didn’t pay her much attention.

But many Qi Refining monks looked at her curiously, probably having heard about the incident at the spiritual sea.

Heng Yu stood beside Liaowu, ignoring their gazes.

Soon, more Buddhist cultivators arrived, including someone Heng Yu recognized — Liaoyuan.

He twirled his folding fan, walked through the crowd towards Heng Yu, stopped two steps away, and greeted her with a smile. “Lord Luo, it’s been a while. I’ve missed you.”

“I haven’t missed Senior Brother Liaoyuan.”

A flicker of light crossed Liaoyuan’s eyes, and he said with a slightly mournful tone, “The more beautiful a woman is, the more heartless she is.”

Heng Yu chuckled softly. “Thank you for the compliment.”

With so many people around, Liaoyuan didn’t linger. After exchanging a few pleasantries, he stood there, lazily playing with his exquisite folding fan.

About a quarter of an hour later, almost all the disciples going to the Sword Sect had arrived.

Heng Yu looked around, estimating the number of people.

The Undying Sect had many disciples, so naturally, they couldn’t all attend the Dharma Assembly. They only selected the most outstanding disciples of each realm to compete.

Of course, there were also some younger disciples with high potential but lower cultivation levels who were going to broaden their horizons.

Heng Yu looked carefully and saw two familiar faces — Liaonian and Liaohe.

Soon, a Buddhist cultivator with a fierce demeanor descended from the sky.

He was the leader chosen for this trip, Master Yuanxin, a mid-stage Nascent Soul cultivator who specialized in the path of killing.

Yuanxin hovered in the air, extending his divine sense to count the disciples.

His gaze lingered on Heng Yu for a moment before moving on.

After confirming that everyone was present, Yuanxin coughed lightly, amplifying his voice with spiritual energy.

“This poor monk is the leader of this trip, responsible for your safety. All other matters will be handled by Liaowu. Do you understand?”

    “Yes, Elder!”

The Undying Sect disciples replied in unison, their hands joined together.

Heng Yu also bowed with a gesture, showing respect to Master Yuanxin.

“Good. All disciples, board the airship!” Yuanxin said.

Everyone boarded the airship using their own methods.

    Soon, everyone was on board.

Their accommodations had been arranged beforehand, so they went to find their rooms.

Heng Yu’s room was deep inside the airship, next to Liaowu’s.

Liaowu led her to her door. “Focus on refining your spiritual energy these next few days. If anything happens, send me a message.”
