Chapter 57: She Almost Thought the Snow Would Never Stop… p1

It was late at night, no stars in the sky, only a solitary moon.

The sea was an inky blue, occasionally rippling with moon-white crests.

This winter had been long, the endless snow seemingly never ceasing.

It fell softly, swallowed by the waves.

So cold, her blood almost freezing.

A faint light flickered above the sea, and she saw a towering tree, its form hazy and indistinct.

Its trunk was dark, its leaves a deep blue, its roots entangled and reaching deep into the inky ocean, emanating a soft, moon-like glow amidst the misty water.

For the first time, she reached out and touched it, as if touching someone in a deep slumber.

The trunk rippled with light where her fingers brushed against it, the ripples spreading throughout the massive tree.

Dewdrops formed on the blue leaves, trembling and falling as the sea breeze blew past.

Like a soft rain, they fell onto the ocean, transforming into moon-white pearls that sank slowly into the depths…

She saw another “self,” standing amidst the swaying shadows of the tree, faint as a wisp of smoke, as if a gentle breeze could make her disappear completely.

She instinctively tried to approach, but an invisible force held her back.

The figure turned to look at her, her deep blue eyes like the deepest ocean, silent and lonely.

As their eyes met, the figure extended a finger.

A touch on her forehead, and the countless leaves swayed like waves in a calm sea.

The faint, misty light in the world around her flowed towards her, like streams converging into a river.

The cool finger on her forehead lifted, and the smoky figure became translucent.

She instinctively reached out to hold on, but grasped nothing.

The figure, fainter than the moonlight, dissolved into specks of light.

The light lingered beneath the swaying tree, gradually forming a green jade sundial that floated into her palm.

The towering tree disappeared, the blue light fading.

And the moon in the sky, seemingly eternal, crumbled like peeling paint, disappearing into the darkness.

The long night remained, the lightless sea remained.

Only the snow, falling on her heart,

Seemed like it would never stop.

Her head ached, her breathing heavy.

A burning sensation spread through her body, yet she felt so cold.

Spiritual energy flowed into her damaged meridians, a cool, gentle touch, like spring rain extinguishing a fire, dispelling the chilling cold.

She heard voices, muffled, as if underwater, indistinguishable.

    This hazy sensation lingered.

Li Yu finally opened her heavy eyes.

Her eyelashes fluttered, beads of sweat glistening on her pale skin.

Her blurry vision gradually cleared, and she saw her surroundings.

    It was all so familiar.

Outside the window was a clear sky, the snow gone, replaced by a colorful garden in full bloom.

She thought she would never see these flowers again.

How did she get back here?

    Li Yu pondered.

She had fainted in the passage to the Demon Realm.

That place, where those inside couldn’t leave, and those outside wouldn’t easily enter, where cries for help went unanswered, she hadn’t even summoned a butterfly message, so who brought her back?

Her mind felt foggy, unable to think clearly, so she gave up trying.

Regardless of how she returned, it was good to be back.

If she hadn’t, she would have woken up in darkness, alone, injured, cold, forced to find shelter and recover by herself.

Just the thought of that made her shudder; it wouldn’t be much different from being dead.

Sometimes, she felt like she was playing a game, and Qianlizhu was her respawn point. Whenever she “died” outside, she would wake up here. It was strangely comforting.

But she didn’t know how long she had been unconscious, how Mu Tao was doing…

She glanced at the 99% blackening value…

So close to 100%, what was the reason?

The little girl must have entered the Demon Realm already.

Alone in that ruthless, lightless world, with only the power of the Demon Bone to rely on.

She would face many dangers, many hardships, gradually adapting to and mastering the Demon Bone’s power, forcing herself to grow up quickly, becoming the feared new Demon Lord.

    Everything was unfolding as destined.

Li Yu tried to recall the little protagonist’s thoughts in the original story when she was abandoned.

Something about everyone having their own Dao… [T/N: Dao – complex concept in Chinese philosophy, often translated as “way,” “path,” or “principle.”]

Had Mu Tao also thought that when the Harmony Bells were severed?

Perhaps she had indeed thought that her master’s Dao was different from her path…

But that wasn’t true; Li Yu didn’t have a “Dao.”

She wanted to be with Mu Tao, face everything together. Even weakened, she didn’t want to abandon her.

    But she had no choice.

If she had known this plot point was unavoidable, she wouldn’t have made so many promises.

The most hurtful thing was making sincere promises, earning someone’s trust, and then failing to keep them.

She knew she and Mu Tao would meet again, just like in the original story, Mu Tao would eventually return to Mount Chao Yao.

But she didn’t know how Mu Tao would look at her then…

In the original story, it only took Mu Tao three years, relying on the Demon Bone’s power, to establish her reputation in the Demon Realm, become the new Demon Lord, and return to the human realm, filled with hatred, destroying Mount Chao Yao.

That day, the girl in red, her innocence gone, only a cold, unwavering hatred in her eyes.

Li Yu had dreamed of that scene countless times.

Every time, Mu Tao would snap her sword in two, walk towards her step by step, and recount her resentment.

Then, with a cold smile, she would plunge the broken sword into Li Yu’s chest.

She knew there wouldn’t be a broken sword this time, no fatal blow.

But she couldn’t help but feel both anticipation and dread for that inevitable reunion…

Li Yu realized she couldn’t think about Mu Tao; perhaps her body couldn’t handle the emotional turmoil. Just thinking about her made it hard to breathe.

So, she stared blankly at the flowers outside the window, letting her mind go blank.

After a while, she remembered the dream she had while unconscious.

A dream unlike any she had experienced before.

In her dream, there was an inky blue sea and a towering tree.

That tree was her spiritual root; she had known that since arriving here.

As for the sea, during those days when she was studying spells on her own, the system had told her that it was her sea of consciousness.

She had been curious and asked, “Do all cultivators have such a sea, such a large tree?”

The system told her that everyone’s sea of consciousness was different.

Hers was a blue sea, while others might have valleys, grasslands, forests, deserts…

And within the sea of consciousness, there might be a single plant, or countless flowers and trees, but the largest and most vibrant one would always be the spiritual root. The vastness of the sea and the size of the root reflected one’s cultivation level.

What was the significance of a large tree growing in a vast ocean?

The system’s answer was just a guess.

It said that the appearance of the sea of consciousness reflected one’s state of mind.

Cangming Revered One, aloof and solitary, yet carrying a desire to protect the world.

A vast, lonely ocean, a single tree reaching for the sky.

Perhaps this was Cangming Revered One’s state of mind.

Li Yu had often wondered, if this world was real, where did the original owner of this body go after she arrived?

    Did she simply vanish?

But now, she seemed to have seen her.

    In that strange dream…

Perhaps it wasn’t just a dream.

Li Yu closed her eyes, her consciousness entering her sea of consciousness. She looked up at the towering tree.

The prohibition symbols that once covered it were gone, leaving only the dark trunk and the lush, blue leaves.

She walked across the surface of the sea, each step creating ripples.

Reaching the tree, she gently touched it.

A soft blue light flickered on the tree, and the green jade sundial from her dream appeared in her palm.

Was this…given to her by the original owner?

Not just the sundial, but all the light from her spiritual root had flowed into her in the dream…

    Li Yu lowered her gaze.

【This is the world-protecting artifact, the [Jinxu Gui], entrusted to the original owner by the last ancient god!】

    “Is it powerful?”

    【Probably!】

    “How do I use it?”

    【I don’t know.】

“Silence or guidance, all to control variables, right?”

    【Well, that…】

Forget it, there was no point in asking. This system kept so many secrets from her, one more or less didn’t matter.

    This…Jinxu whatsit…

    【[Jinxu Gui].】

Right, what it was, how to use it, might be important, but it was like advanced math to her; she couldn’t understand it.

No matter how much she pondered, she wouldn’t suddenly grasp it.

Since it was a reward from a main storyline mission, she would eventually find a use for it, and the system would surely guide her then. Overthinking was pointless.

    Chapter 56: 【Current Protagonist Blackening Value: 99%!】p2

As darkness enveloped her, the world fell silent.

A faint blue light flickered in the darkness.

Li Yu, holding the light in one hand, Mu Tao’s hand in the other, cautiously walked forward.

In the seemingly endless darkness, Mu Tao looked at the figure before her, her racing heart slowly calming down.

For a moment there, she had lost herself.

Thankfully, her master was still here. As long as her master was with her, she had nothing to fear.

The power of the Demon Bone was truly terrifying…

If she could control it, she could protect her master, never letting her be hurt again.

The path was dark and long; she didn’t know where it led.

But she wasn’t afraid, just silently following Li Yu, her gaze fixed on the soft blue light, walking with her into the deepest darkness.

A swirl of dark green appeared in the seemingly endless darkness.

As they approached, she saw it more clearly.

It was a vortex, like a gaping maw, silently floating in the darkness.

    Was this…the Demon Realm?

Mu Tao thought this, then felt her master’s hand tremble slightly.

This tremor made her pause, her head tilting in confusion. “Master, what’s wrong?”

She didn’t know that her master’s heart was in turmoil.

Li Yu herself didn’t understand. She had endured so much, yet a simple main storyline event was making her feel so…awful.

It was ironic; the moment she entered this darkness, the system’s voice echoed in her mind.

Host, please stop. Let the protagonist walk this path alone.

Regardless of the changes to the plot, the protagonist must become the Demon Lord for the main storyline to continue.

The male protagonist severing the Harmony Bells and leaving the female protagonist alone in the Demon Realm is a crucial plot point, essential for her becoming the new Demon Lord.

Without this event, given the protagonist’s current temperament and her dependence on the host, she will never become the Demon Lord—therefore, this plot point cannot be changed or avoided.

What a ridiculous request! She didn’t want to hear it.

Let the protagonist walk this path alone?

She had made so many promises to Mu Tao, how could she abandon her here?

Didn’t the system know the severe consequences of the male protagonist’s actions in the original story?!

She was here to change the ending; there was clearly a better path, why force her to follow the original, disastrous plot points?!

She couldn’t make this mistake, no matter what.

So, she continued walking, holding Mu Tao’s hand tightly.

    But the system’s voice persisted.

    【Host, please stop.】

    【Host, please stop.】

    【Host, please stop.】

It was so noisy, so annoying.

For the first time, she found its voice irritating.

【This is the true entrance to the Demon Realm. If you go any further, there’s no turning back!】

She didn’t understand why she should turn back.

She didn’t have the original owner’s sense of duty or her unwavering Dao heart!

She was just someone dragged into this world!

The system wanted her to change the ending, and she had been diligently cooperating, changing many plot points!

She had come so far; just a few more steps, and everything would be different.

But why was the system forcing her to give up now?

Becoming the Demon Lord was good; then Mu Tao would never be bullied again.

But if it meant being alone, it wouldn’t be what Mu Tao wanted…

【Host, this is the main storyline…】

Shut up! She didn’t want to hear it!

What would happen if she didn’t follow this main storyline?!

【The reason you were brought here is that the author’s story has deviated significantly from the outline, turning all the characters into puppets, unable to control their own fates, ultimately leading to the protagonist destroying the world in her despair!】

【To fix this deviation, an outsider, someone objective, must guide the story back on track, preserving the key plot points while filling in the missing details from the original outline!】

What did the original outline have to do with her?

She was certain that Mu Tao wasn’t a puppet; she was her own person!

And everyone she knew in this world was real, not controlled by anyone!

What was wrong with how the story had progressed so far?

Mu Tao wasn’t alone anymore, Mount Chao Yao wouldn’t be destroyed, what was wrong with that?

【Who is the black-robed figure, someone who didn’t exist in the original story? Haven’t you ever wondered?】

【The Heavenly Demon died over four thousand years ago. Why did its Demon Bone appear four thousand years later, and why was it brought to Mount Chao Yao by Si Qinglan? Have you ever considered this?】

【Without resolving these questions, can this world truly achieve the peace you envision?】

【If the crucial plot points aren’t met, if the outline isn’t completed, this world will inevitably collapse in an unpredictable way!】

    So…

    What would happen?

【You will never complete your mission, never return to your world!】

    That didn’t sound so bad.

Mu Tao wouldn’t become the Demon Lord, the main storyline wouldn’t progress, and she couldn’t go back, so what?

She could stay with Mu Tao forever…

【If the main storyline cannot continue, the higher-level system will deem this world unsalvageable, and you will be erased! Based on current data, without your influence, the protagonist will inevitably destroy the world!】

【Is that the outcome you want?】

【Do you still insist on continuing?】

【Only by surviving, completing the main storyline, and fulfilling the outline can you truly save the protagonist, save this world!】

But why didn’t you tell her this plot point was also unavoidable…

She had made so many promises…

【This is also a necessary part of the protagonist’s journey to becoming the Demon Lord.】

So, you knew everything but chose not to tell her.

【Please understand, the system’s silence and guidance are to control variables.】

【Please believe that the system’s mission is to help you save this world, not to harm you.】

Li Yu chuckled coldly in her mind.

How ironic; she had vowed to never become like the male protagonist in the original story.

【Don’t be discouraged, Host, your previous efforts weren’t in vain. The protagonist will not become as twisted as in the original story.】

Could she explain this to Mu Tao?

【The system has detected that this action could have unpredictable consequences for the world’s stability. For the safety of the host and the world, any speech that reveals plot details will be muted.】

Fine, she knew what to do.

Li Yu took a deep breath and stopped abruptly, feeling an unprecedented calmness.

She told herself to suppress her compassion, no matter what she heard.

    “Master?”

    “…”

    “Why did you stop?”

    “…”

Receiving no response, Mu Tao tightened her grip on Li Yu’s hand.

“Master, what’s wrong? Don’t scare me…” She gently shook Li Yu’s wrist, seeking the reassuring chime of the silver bells. “Master, please say something…”

    Silence.

Why was her master ignoring her? Impossible!

This must be an illusion, like in the City of the Undying. She was always so clumsy, so easily separated from her master…

But it was fine, she had the Harmony Bells, she could find her master!

Thinking this, she released Li Yu’s hand and activated the bells with her spiritual energy.

The familiar chiming came from right in front of her, and she froze.

“Mu Tao, I can hear you…” Li Yu’s voice trembled slightly.

“Master!” Mu Tao grabbed her wrist, her voice filled with panic. “What just happened?!”

The light in Li Yu’s palm flickered.

She turned around, her gaze lowered, and gently pried open Mu Tao’s fingers.

    Mu Tao: “Master!”

Li Yu: “Enter here. The Demon Realm is just beyond this passage.”

    Mu Tao: “Then…what about Master…?”

Li Yu: “I’m only taking you this far.”

Mu Tao tightened her grip on Li Yu’s wrist. “What are you talking about, Master?”

    “…”

“You said you would go to the Demon Realm with me, that you would always be by my side, that you would teach me how to control my power! You promised, you promised you would always be with me!” Mu Tao looked at Li Yu, her eyes red with pleading. “Master, you’re joking, right?”

“No.” Li Yu took a deep breath.

She didn’t turn around, just said coldly, “I’m only taking you this far.”

“Why?!” Mu Tao cried, her voice choked with tears.

She stared at Li Yu, hoping for a sliver of compassion.

“Master, you promised, you promised me!”

“There’s no ‘why’,” Li Yu said coldly, pulling her hand away.

“Master, did I do something wrong? Was it…because I didn’t control myself earlier…? I, I’ll definitely control it next time! I didn’t, I didn’t kill anyone! You said injure, not kill, I remember!”

    “…”

    “Master, please don’t leave me…”

Before Mu Tao could finish, a deep blue light flashed.

The red string on her wrist snapped.

    And the silver bells shattered.

She stopped pleading, staring at the broken pieces falling to the ground.

The sound of shattering silver was so loud, so piercing…

It made her breath catch, her heart ache.

These are Harmony Bells, a pair. One for you, and one for me. From now on, no matter where you are, no matter how far apart we are, as long as you activate them with your spiritual power, I will be able to find you.

    Was that also a lie…?

Qin Yuan had said that once the Harmony Bells were tied, they represented a lifelong bond, and forcibly breaking them was equivalent to taking half the life of the person who tied them.

    Why?

Her master had left Mount Chao Yao for her, abandoned everything, even defied the entire immortal world…

She no longer doubted her worth, no longer doubted her master’s affection.

    But why?

She had finally believed she could have all of this.

Yet, her master chose to sacrifice half her life to abandon her here…

The blue light still lingered beside her, but the person who created it had turned and left without a word.

That retreating figure was the only whiteness in this darkness.

She saw a pearl falling, landing on the ground, shattering in her heart.

Where did it all go wrong?

She wanted to cry, to plead, but her throat was dry, the words caught.

She wanted to run after her master, but her foot touched the broken bells.

And she lost all her courage.

The resolute figure disappeared into the darkness, until she could no longer see her.

For the first time, she realized that her heart, once filled with emotions,

    Could also be empty.

    Her steps grew heavier.

Blood trickled from her lips, staining her clothes.

She was so tired, the path so dark and long, seemingly endless.

【Congratulations to the host for completing the crucial “Severing Ties” plot point and successfully advancing the main storyline!】

You’ve got to be kidding me, you damn system…

She had done everything the male protagonist was supposed to do.

If it had told her this was her job, she could have just killed herself on the first day…

    【You’ve worked hard, Host!】

【The system will now issue rewards—】

    Hold on, not yet…

    【All advanced spells unlocked.】

    【World-protecting artifact [Jinxu Gui] unlocked.】

    Wait…she felt…

    Like she was dying?

【The host’s current mission completion rate is 70%. The system restriction level has been lowered to—Low!】

【The character compatibility kill threshold has been lowered to 30%!】

    System, are you even listening?!

    【Protagonist Blackening Value +34%!】

    【Current Protagonist Blackening Value: 99%!】

What was all that? She couldn’t hear clearly…

    【Host, are you alright?】

Alright my ass, her chest hurt, she felt like she was dying!

    【What?!】

Were the Harmony Bells really that potent…?

She couldn’t hold on any longer…

【This is the passage between realms! Host, get out of here before you faint!】

  • Devilish Disciple [Transmigration] 56p1

    Chapter 56: 【Current Protagonist Blackening Value: 99%!】p1

Although the innkeeper’s firecrackers were finished, the night remained lively.

The quiet New Year’s Eve was ignited by that first spark, crackling sounds echoing continuously.

Later, colorful fireworks lit up the distant city walls.

“Fireworks!” a child wearing a tiger hat pointed at the sky.

The innkeeper patted the child’s head and said with a playful smile, “Look, fireworks! They’re scaring away the Nian beast!” [T/N: 年兽 (Nian shou(beast)) is a mythical beast in Chinese folklore, said to appear during the New Year.]

Mu Tao stood beside them, her eyes wide, her mouth slightly open, gazing at the sky.

Suddenly, she blinked and ran back into the inn, up the stairs, and into their room, jumping onto the bed beside Li Yu.

    “Master!” Her eyes were shining.

    “Hmm?”

    “Let’s watch together!”

    “Okay.”

The human New Year was lively, and amidst this liveliness, Li Yu was reminded of her past.

A past even before arriving in this world.

    —Her childhood.

New Year’s Eve as a child was truly lively.

Many relatives gathered around a table, squeezed together.

The table was laden with food, and the children, after filling their bowls, would gather at the coffee table, sitting on small stools, playing cards while eating.

Everyone talked and laughed, their voices loud enough to drown out the TV.

She remembered being one of those children, sitting on a small stool by the coffee table, watching TV.

Red envelopes from the elders were piled on the sofa behind the coffee table.

Later, the adults would take the children to the rooftop to watch the fireworks unobstructed.

After the fireworks, after the cold wind, everyone would return to their homes, cook dumplings, eat, and then go to bed, lulled to sleep by the ending notes of the Spring Festival Gala. [T/N: Spring Festival Gala, is a televised New Year’s Eve variety show in China.]

New Year’s Eve as a child was truly special.

As an adult, she rarely watched fireworks anymore.

Not that there weren’t any, but even when she heard them, she only found them noisy, no longer feeling the urge to watch.

    But tonight was different.

It wasn’t as lively as her memories, but she felt the same warmth.

The distant fireworks lit up the sky.

They were probably less dazzling than a single spark of spiritual energy, but even having seen countless brilliant spells, she still found them beautiful.

And such a scene was even more meaningful with company.

That night, Mu Tao asked Li Yu many questions about the human New Year traditions.

They huddled together in the small bed, their voices soft, talking until they yawned and finally fell asleep.

After a night of rest, they left the small inn and continued their journey, following the system’s guidance.

A long time seemed to have passed, and the immortal sects’ Soul Searching Techniques never ceased.

These techniques were different from sensing auras directly. Her concealment spell couldn’t hide from them; she had to constantly maintain a more energy-consuming barrier.

Li Yu felt more alert, her control over spiritual energy improving.

Although these improvements were born from fear of being caught, she believed they would be useful in the Demon Realm.

Now, the question was, how far was this legendary Demon Realm?

The system’s answer made her want to roll her eyes.

    【Almost there!】

Almost there! Such a helpful answer!

So concise, so definitive, and so vague.

In the past, she would have pressed for a more concrete answer.

    But now, she didn’t bother.

She had asked this question countless times, and the answer was always, “Still very far!”

And if she asked how far “very far” was, whether it could estimate the time, the answer would be no.

Because the host is injured, your travel speed fluctuates, so the system can’t calculate it accurately, boohoo!

Thinking positively, the answer changing from “very far” to “almost there” meant they were indeed close.

But their journey hadn’t been completely undetected.

The immortal sects might have already deduced their destination based on their movements.

It wasn’t her imagination; the closer they got to the Demon Realm, the more frequent the Soul Searching Techniques became.

This forced Li Yu to expend more energy on concealment.

Fortunately, they had slowed down, spending less time traveling and more time resting, allowing her to recover slightly. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have been able to handle this constant harassment.

The original story mentioned a unique energy flow at the entrance to the Demon Realm, a one-way vortex that made entering easy but leaving difficult.

This, besides the demons’ intolerance of heat, was another reason why there were so few demons in the human realm.

Besides heat, demons also loathed immortals and righteous cultivators.

Demons themselves were generally tolerated in the Demon Realm, but human cultivators, without sufficient power, would likely be captured and devoured.

In the original story, the male protagonist dared to send the protagonist to the Demon Realm precisely because of this.

Among the many immortal sects in the human realm, how many disciples could freely enter and exit the Demon Realm?

And among those who could, how many could withstand the demons’ hostility?

Even immortals would hesitate to enter the Demon Realm to retrieve the Demon Bone.

It was a place easy to enter, but not so easy to leave.

But the little protagonist was different.

With the Demon Bone, other demons were wary of her, and even if anyone dared to attack, the Bone would protect her.

Thinking of this, Li Yu couldn’t help but sigh.

The once weak protagonist, after entering the Demon Realm, not only became the new Demon Lord but also led the demons out of that one-way passage.

The power of the Heavenly Demon was like a cheat code; no wonder the immortal sects insisted on destroying the Demon Bone.

But even though they wanted to destroy it, they didn’t dare enter the Demon Realm.

Li Yu knew that the immortal sects also knew that if the protagonist truly intended to enter the Demon Realm, their only chance to destroy the Demon Bone was to ambush her at the entrance.

The path ahead wouldn’t be easy, but she believed she could do it.

Even if she didn’t believe in herself, she should believe in the protagonist’s halo, right?

Thinking this, Li Yu felt reassured.

With this newfound confidence, she and Mu Tao continued their journey, finally arriving at the entrance to the Demon Realm at the end of winter.

This entrance was hidden in a mountain forest in the human realm.

There was a small river in the forest, and within the river, a hidden “eye.”

This “eye,” closed at the bottom of the river, was invisible and intangible to ordinary beings. Only with sufficient spiritual power could it be temporarily opened.

As expected, the place was heavily guarded by cultivators from the immortal sects.

Li Yu had expected an ambush, but she realized she had been overthinking it.

These cultivators were incredibly obvious, their interception formation set up in plain sight, no attempt at concealment, either incredibly confident or simply…stupid.

Regardless of the reason, their waiting game had indeed caught their target.

But this large-scale deployment made Li Yu hesitate.

Soul Searching Techniques covered the entire forest, forcing her to constantly maintain her concealment barrier, a significant drain on her energy.

But if they left now, where could they go?

The surrounding area was filled with cultivators; would they have to retreat further, continuing to hide and wait for them to leave?

Who knew how long they would stay…

As long as Mu Tao didn’t enter the Demon Realm, the danger remained.

And here, in the human realm, these cultivators could attack freely, while she had many restrictions.

If they left now, and were found later, the situation might be even worse.

“Master, what do we do now?”

Mu Tao’s worried voice brought Li Yu back to reality.

She frowned and said in a low voice, “We go through.”

Mu Tao’s worry deepened. “But Master, in your current state…”

Li Yu: “Delaying this will only make things more difficult. Even if we don’t go through today, we’ll have to eventually.”

    Mu Tao: “…”

Li Yu: “Constantly hiding and running is draining my energy, preventing me from recovering. It’s better to use our remaining strength to enter the Demon Realm; they won’t dare follow us there.”

Mu Tao bit her lip, her brow furrowed, but didn’t speak.

Li Yu sighed, took her cold hand, and said seriously, “This time, it’s your turn.”

Mu Tao looked up, her eyes wide with disbelief.

    Mu Tao: “I… I can?”

Li Yu: “You can sense the power of the Demon Bone, can’t you?”

Mu Tao blinked, confusion and surprise in her eyes.

Li Yu: “You can sense its presence, and you can try to use it, right?”

Mu Tao nodded hesitantly. “But Master, you never wanted me to use it…”

Li Yu gently patted her hand. “The situation has changed. We have no other choice now; we need its power.”

One couldn’t hold it in forever.

When there was no other choice, why not use the power of the Demon Bone?

They were at the entrance to the Demon Realm; using it here wouldn’t reveal their location or affect the human realm.

Once inside, Mu Tao would be truly free.

Li Yu knew Mu Tao must be afraid, but to survive, she had to learn to control that power.

Before, she had only told Mu Tao not to use it.

Now, it was time to teach her when to use it.

Li Yu: “Everyone says the power of the Demon Bone is evil, but how do we define ‘evil’?”

Mu Tao opened her mouth, unsure how to answer.

“Many in the human realm believe that demons are evil and immortals are good. But there are demons who become immortals, and immortals who fall into darkness. Good and evil, like right and wrong, aren’t always clearly defined.” Li Yu tightened her grip on Mu Tao’s hand. “Everyone wants to kill you, but I’m willing to protect you, because I believe that good and evil reside in the heart. You’re my disciple; you won’t do anything I wouldn’t approve of.”

A flicker of something appeared in Mu Tao’s eyes.

Li Yu: “No matter how ‘evil’ the power, as long as it’s in your hands, I believe it will be used for protection, not destruction.”

Mu Tao: “Does Master…really think so…?”

“Of course!” Li Yu said seriously. “I didn’t want you to use it before because you couldn’t control it. I was afraid you would do something you regretted.”

Mu Tao lowered her gaze, her face filled with worry. “But can I…control it now…?”

“It’s within you, no longer sealed. You can choose not to use it, or you can try.” Li Yu gently cupped Mu Tao’s face. “Remember what I said, we just need to enter the Demon Realm. We can injure those who block our path, but we cannot kill.”

“Injure, but not kill,” Mu Tao repeated seriously.

“Yes!” Li Yu smiled and pinched her cheek gently. “Trust yourself, you can do it.”

Mu Tao pursed her lips, her expression nervous, but she nodded resolutely.

“Don’t feel pressured, just treat it as a simple trial. I’ll be right beside you.” Li Yu smiled gently. “It’s okay to make mistakes; I won’t let you make any irreversible ones.”

Mu Tao’s eyes teared up, and she nodded vigorously.

The sky above the forest darkened.

Li Yu took a deep breath and asked softly, “Ready?”

    Mu Tao nodded.

The next second, the concealment spell dissipated, and the Soul Searching Techniques immediately locked onto them.

    “The Demon Bone is there!”

A shout echoed through the forest, followed by a flash of blue light.

Li Yu, carrying Mu Tao, instantly flew towards the river—this flying technique, which she had just learned, was much more efficient than the crane, especially without having to maintain its form.

    “Activate the formation!” someone shouted.

Before Li Yu could even land, countless golden lights erupted beneath their feet.

At the same time, resentment gathered in the sky, like threads of red in the wind.

Li Yu sent a blast of spiritual energy towards the river, parting the water.

The light dissipated at the bottom, touching the hidden “eye.”

The “eye” slowly opened, revealing a bottomless darkness.

Ignoring the formation beneath their feet, Li Yu pulled Mu Tao towards the darkness.

But with her depleted spiritual energy, breaking through the formation wouldn’t be easy.

The golden light blocked their path, its swirling energy like sharp blades, trapping them.

Li Yu released Mu Tao’s hand, formed a hand seal, and created a protective barrier, shielding Mu Tao.

    “Break the formation!” she shouted.

Mu Tao took a deep breath, and a dark red mist emanated from her raised hands.

The resentment in the sky, bypassing the golden light of the formation, converged towards her palms.

A black flame suddenly erupted from the red mist.

    Mu Tao’s eyes turned crimson.

Her expression hardened, becoming cold and menacing, like a death god.

The black flames, like a growing flower, surged upwards, silently enveloping the world.

As the last vestiges of daylight vanished, even the falling snow turned black.

It was as if black fire had consumed the sky and clouds, leaving behind dark, falling ashes.

The “ashes,” though light, burned through the golden light of the formation like fire on paper.

A gust of wind, and they were gone.

Terror filled the eyes of the immortal cultivators.

The black snow fell on them, and someone cried out in pain.

Panic erupted, some fleeing, some trying to defend themselves, the formation now unguarded.

“Let’s go!” As the barrier dissipated, Li Yu grabbed Mu Tao’s hand.

But Mu Tao didn’t respond, the crimson in her eyes deepening.

“Mu Tao!” Li Yu frowned and channeled a sliver of spiritual energy into her forehead.

    Mu Tao’s body trembled.

The crimson in her eyes faded, and the blood-red mist in her hands disappeared.

The black flames above continued to burn, embraced by the swirling resentment, the black snow staining the white earth.

The immortal cultivators struggled in the black snow, their protective spiritual energy flickering and fading.

Mu Tao, shocked by the scene, let Li Yu pull her towards the dark abyss at the bottom of the river.

“The Demon Bone has escaped!” someone shouted, but they were powerless to stop them.

They plunged into the entrance to the Demon Realm, disappearing instantly, like a speck of dust in the vast world.

The “eye” at the riverbed slowly closed, the parted water flowing back together.

The black flames in the sky gradually dissipated, and the snow turned white again.

Only wisps of resentment lingered in the air.

Was that…the power of the Heavenly Demon?

The injured cultivators stared at the broken formation, speechless with fear.

Chapter 55: Staying Here…Didn’t Seem So Bad

The snow on Mount Chao Yao fell relentlessly throughout the night, finally ceasing at dawn.

The unfinished demon-slaying formation shimmered on the mist-shrouded Cloud Platform.

The spiritual runes of the formation glowed with a golden, sun-like light.

In two days, at most, when the formation was complete, the little wolf demon with the Demon Bone, imprisoned in the Spirit Restraint Hall, would be destroyed.

    But last night, she escaped.

The person who helped her escape was her master, the guardian of the Upper Spirit Lamp’s seal—Li Yu, the Exalted Immortal.

Four thousand years ago, when the Heavenly Realm severed its connection with the human realm, she was the only god willing to stay and protect the world, the only one who could open the Heavenly Gate from the human realm.

For four thousand years, all the immortal sects in the human realm revered her; countless people considered meeting her an honor.

Yet, this Exalted Immortal, without telling anyone, took in a wolf demon with a Demon Bone as her disciple, raising her for over two hundred years!

If it weren’t for the theft of the Upper Spirit Lamp and the incident in Lingzhou, everyone would still be in the dark!

According to the disciples on the mountain, this Exalted Immortal was indifferent to everything except for her little disciple.

Just how much she favored her disciple was common knowledge.

“Cangming Revered One always preferred quiet. Without her permission, no disciple could enter or leave Chaoxi Pond. But that Mu Tao was different; she could come and go as she pleased…”

“We didn’t know what was so special about her. Such weak aptitude, yet she was accepted as Cangming Revered One’s direct disciple. And during the Cloud Platform Trial, it’s normal for disciples to get injured during sparring, but only she was rescued by Cangming Revered One herself…”

“Cangming Revered One hasn’t left the mountain in four thousand years, not even Chaoxi Pond. It’s incredibly rare for disciples to even see her!”

“Yet, she not only personally took Mu Tao to the human realm for training, but upon returning, she even established a rule! No one was allowed to gossip about Mu Tao or bully her, and if she found out anyone had wronged her, there would be severe consequences!”

For the guardian of the Upper Spirit Lamp to favor a girl with a Demon Bone was unsettling.

More importantly, since the demon’s imprisonment, the Exalted Immortal hadn’t made any public statements.

Making a statement didn’t guarantee trustworthiness, but not making one was definitely a problem.

The surge of resentment in the human realm, the breach of Mount Chao Yao’s mountain gate, the theft of the Upper Spirit Lamp, the awakening of the Demon Bone, these consecutive events made people suspect a conspiracy.

Although many claimed that Li Yu harboring the Demon Bone suggested ulterior motives, everyone knew that if she was truly evil, the Upper Spirit Lamp wouldn’t have remained sealed for four thousand years.

Their accusations were simply a way to pressure Mount Chao Yao into handing over and destroying the Demon Bone.

This way, they could prevent anyone from using it to harm the human realm.

As for Li Yu, having guarded the Upper Spirit Lamp for four thousand years, they believed that her protection of the Demon Bone stemmed from compassion, unwilling to see an innocent child bear such a burden.

And because of this belief, they were even more worried about her rescuing the demon.

Her disciple had been imprisoned for so long, yet she neither agreed to destroy the Demon Bone nor offered an explanation, her motives clear.

She was severely injured in the human realm, too weak to protect her disciple. Afraid of others realizing this and acting recklessly, she avoided them, trying to buy time.

So, the assembled immortals created a temporary no-fly zone.

This barrier was so vast that even Winged Clan members couldn’t easily escape.

—At least, not a severely injured immortal like her.

Qingxuan Revered One, Si Qinglan, didn’t object to destroying the Demon Bone.

She had cooperated, albeit reluctantly, with everything they asked of her.

The breach of the mountain gate had indeed weakened her significantly; her depleted spiritual energy was evident; she likely couldn’t, and didn’t have the strength to, help Li Yu.

Li Yu, although a god from the West Sea and not afraid of the ocean, was severely injured, burdened by Mu Tao, and pursued relentlessly; escaping beyond the barrier was almost impossible.

The immortals had considered every possibility, yet they never imagined that their plan would be foiled by an ordinarily rule-abiding junior.

No one would have guessed that a junior from Mount Chao Yao would have the audacity and the ability to freeze the sea, create a protective formation, and help Li Yu and the Demon Bone escape right before their eyes!

Although he hadn’t said anything, he must have been instructed by someone!

Everyone turned to look at the most likely culprit.

Within the Flower Soul Hall of Qianlizhu,

Facing the immortals’ fury and accusations, Si Qinglan was enraged, unleashing a torrent of insults at the kneeling Mo Yichu.

As she raged, the usually vibrant flowers in the hall withered silently.

“How dare you! That’s the…Heavenly! Demon! Demon Bone!!!” she shouted, her brow furrowed. “Tell me, how dare you?!”

The usually amiable Qingxuan Revered One was now terrifyingly furious.

The disciples of Mount Chao Yao were terrified, and the other immortals were stunned.

She declared that she never would have imagined such recklessness from a Mount Chao Yao junior!

She was heartbroken, she was furious!

Her emotions surged, her breathing ragged!

She almost hated this useless disciple!

    She declared:

Such a grave mistake at such a young age, this couldn’t be tolerated!

He must be punished, severely punished!

    —But!

    He wasn’t her disciple…

“Everyone knows Lingyao Revered One’s temper.” Si Qinglan’s expression turned troubled. “Mo Yichu is his only disciple, his precious treasure. I cannot overstep my boundaries…”

She turned to the other immortals and raised a finger. “How about this, I’ll confine him to the Spirit Restraint Hall, and we’ll decide on his punishment after Lingyao Revered One awakens?”

Protecting him! This was blatant favoritism!

Such a dramatic performance, only to let him off lightly in the end!

How could the other immortals tolerate this?

“Qingxuan Revered One, isn’t this a bit…inappropriate?” someone said with a sneer. “Everyone knows that Kun Peng Monarch’s hibernation lasts for centuries, perhaps even a millennium. Your junior released the Demon Bone, and we’re supposed to wait for him to wake up before getting an explanation?!”

“You’re right; this isn’t appropriate… How about this!” Si Qinglan conjured paper, brush, and ink. “I wouldn’t dare punish Lingyao Revered One’s disciple, but all of you, with your high cultivation and great power, are surely fearless. Whoever wants an explanation, write your name and sect here, and leave your mark. Everyone will bear witness, so when Lingyao Revered One awakens, he won’t come looking for me.”

    The immortals exchanged glances.

Si Qinglan: “As long as there’s a single name on this paper, I’ll hand him over, life or death, no longer Mount Chao Yao’s concern.”

This was clearly a list of enemies.

If everyone signed, it wouldn’t be a problem, but Si Qinglan said that even a single signature was enough for an explanation.

Once their goal was achieved, who could guarantee that others would share the responsibility?

If there were only a few names, or even just one, they would live in constant fear for centuries.

After a long silence, someone coughed and said, “Now that the Demon Bone has escaped, punishing a junior won’t change anything…”

“Yes, yes, Qingxuan Revered One, there’s no need to make things so difficult.”

“Just confine him for now, and we can discuss his punishment later. The priority is retrieving the Demon Bone!”

“And the demon-slaying formation must be completed!”

Si Qinglan inwardly breathed a sigh of relief as they spoke.

She looked at the injured Mo Yichu, her heart aching, but she could only say coldly, “You’ve committed a grave mistake, reflect on your actions in the Spirit Restraint Hall.”

She sighed and ordered someone to take him away.

Half an hour later, after everyone left the Flower Soul Hall, Si Qinglan wandered through Qianlizhu.

Looking at the flowers, their colors muted by the snow, a sense of melancholy washed over her.

No matter how beautiful, they were out of season, out of place.

Just a single snowfall, and they were buried…

    How meaningless.

    Si Qinglan smiled wryly.

The no-fly zone had been lifted, and over a hundred disciples from the mountain were now pursuing the escaped demon.

The immortal sects were also sending messengers; soon, the entire human realm would be searching for her.

Li Yu, I can’t help you anymore.

    Can you handle this alone…?

She couldn’t handle it anymore; she was exhausted.

Although she was reluctant to admit it, her internal injuries were severe.

Even without expending energy to conceal herself in the human realm, she didn’t have the strength to maintain the crane’s form and fly to the Demon Realm with Mu Tao.

When even the speed-enhancing technique dissipated, she stumbled in the deep snow.

Mu Tao quickly supported her, her light brown eyes filled with concern.

Her eyes slightly red, she whispered, “Master, let’s stop, let’s rest for a bit, alright?”

They were moving slowly; the pursuing cultivators might catch up soon…

Li Yu wanted to appear strong, but after a moment of thought, she nodded silently and let Mu Tao lead her to a large tree to rest.

As she sat down, she silently comforted herself.

It’s okay, you’ve done your best.

You’re exhausted; it’s fine to rest.

Sharpening the axe won’t delay the chopping of wood; there was no need to work herself to death.

As she was comforting herself, Mu Tao conjured a wind barrier and crouched down beside her, her eyes filled with worry. “Master, rest for a while. I’ll go find us something to eat.”

Li Yu nodded, holding onto her wrist. “Don’t use your demonic energy, it will attract attention.”

    Mu Tao: “Don’t worry, Master, I won’t!”

Li Yu: “Don’t go too far.”

    Mu Tao: “Mm!”

Li Yu: “If you encounter any danger…”

Mu Tao raised her right hand and gently shook the Harmony Bells. “One chime means I’m safe, three quick chimes mean danger! Don’t worry, Master, I won’t be reckless! I’ll ring the bells immediately if I’m in danger!”

Reassured, Li Yu released her wrist.

Mu Tao took a deep breath and ran into the snow.

As the red figure disappeared into the distance, Li Yu closed her eyes, focusing on regulating her breathing.

Finding food in this snowy wilderness wouldn’t be easy, and Mu Tao was gone for a long time.

Thankfully, the Harmony Bells connected them. Whenever Li Yu felt uneasy, a soft chime would reassure her of Mu Tao’s safety.

When Mu Tao returned, she carried an armful of firewood and two fish she had caught somewhere.

Having already cleaned the fish by the river, she built a fire, then returned to Li Yu, sat down beside her with a smile, and started grilling the fish on skewers.

Li Yu: “You caught fish in this weather?”

Mu Tao smiled and raised an eyebrow. “It wasn’t easy, but I know where fish like to hide in winter!”

Li Yu chuckled. “You even know that?”

“We can exchange spirit stones for food, and the spirit stones Master gives me every year are more than enough, but the other disciples don’t like me. They always make fun of me when I go down the mountain. If I can get it myself, it’s better to avoid them and save the spirit stones.”

    “…”

“There are two rivers in the mountains, plenty of fish! Whether it’s spring, summer, autumn, or winter, I can catch them whenever I want!” A hint of pride appeared in Mu Tao’s eyes. “Master, you have no idea how good I am at catching fish. Even some cats can’t compare to me!”

    “So impressive.”

“Not just fish, I can catch many small animals!”

The sky darkened, and the flickering firelight illuminated the girl’s smiling face.

Li Yu hugged her knees, watching the girl happily grilling the fish, her anxiety easing.

The last time she sat by a fire like this, there were many people around, she thought.

It was summer then, no snow, they sat around the fire, with pots and bowls, meat and vegetables, and a carriage to sleep in.

Life was full of ups and downs. Just half a year, and her life had changed so drastically.

    But this wasn’t so bad.

The fire was bright, its warmth seemingly dispelling the winter chill, crackling in the night wind, illuminating the falling snow.

The faint smell of smoke and grilling fish drifted away in the wind, a tranquility she had never experienced, even in her dreams.

She and Mu Tao, like protagonists on the run.

    With nothing but each other.

And when night fell, they sat by a fire, grilling whatever food they could find, sharing memories.

And at the end of their conversation, one of them would say—No matter what, we’ll find a place to belong!

She suddenly felt the urge to say something to Mu Tao.

She had many stories to tell.

But Mu Tao probably wouldn’t understand, and she couldn’t explain, so she suppressed the urge.

As the night deepened, the fish was cooked.

Li Yu took the skewers, and Mu Tao sat beside her, reminding her, “Be careful, Master, it’s hot!”

Li Yu nodded, carefully tore off a piece, cooled it down, and then took a bite.

    The fish…how to describe it…

Li Yu, not a picky eater, had a simple thought.

—Those scenes in movies and novels where protagonists caught fish or chicken and grilled them over a fire, enjoying a delicious meal, without any seasoning, were all lies.

The fish smelled good, but it didn’t taste good.

It had an earthy taste, a hint of bitterness from the smoke, and tiny bones hidden within the flesh. Nothing about it was praiseworthy.

But she didn’t find the taste particularly bad; she could eat it.

When she argued with her family as a child, even when she felt like running away, her mother would still drag her to the dinner table.

She would refuse to eat any dishes out of spite, just forcing down plain rice, tears streaming down her face.

Of course, she wasn’t being spiteful now, and there were no tears, just this bland, slightly tender grilled fish.

It was Mu Tao’s cooking; she could eat it.

The fire burned throughout the night.

They leaned against the tree, its warmth lulling them to sleep.

The wind and snow howled, yet the world seemed incredibly still.

As if all their fatigue could be dispelled in this quiet night.

In the following days, they continued their journey, hiding and resting.

Even a weakened god was still powerful. The spells cast by the only remaining god in the human realm weren’t easily seen through by ordinary cultivators. As long as they avoided high-ranking disciples, they wouldn’t be in too much danger.

Li Yu, realizing this, relaxed slightly.

Her exhausted body couldn’t handle a fast pace anyway, so she and Mu Tao slowed down, using their recovered spiritual energy for concealment.

Li Yu was grateful she hadn’t refused Qin Yuan’s gifts.

Those small, exquisite pieces of jewelry, forgotten in her spatial pouch, were now their source of funds.

They didn’t have to worry about food or travel expenses.

Having left Mount Chao Yao in a hurry, empty-handed, after visiting a human town, Mu Tao’s small bundle returned.

It wasn’t a full kitchen this time, but it contained all the essential seasonings.

Even though they were constantly hiding, often awakened in the middle of the night by searching parties, forced to flee, she still insisted on preparing proper meals.

Li Yu thought that perhaps this was the greatest comfort in their current situation.

She didn’t know how far the Demon Realm was, but this journey wasn’t as tiring as their previous trip to the human realm.

    It felt like…a vacation.

A vacation combined with a game of hide-and-seek.

She lost track of time and distance, the towns and villages they passed, the nights they spent in the wilderness.

She had never been to so many places, even including those childhood trips she barely remembered.

But it also didn’t feel like a long time.

At least, winter hadn’t ended yet.

The snow in the human realm fell and melted, melted and fell again.

A faint miasma lingered in the air, but the ordinary people, oblivious to it, continued their lives.

As they traveled, they stumbled upon a scene of festive red.

Children wearing tiger hats played in the streets, houses decorated with red paper and lanterns.

A snowman outside a house even had a red scarf.

Li Yu suddenly realized that the long winter was almost over.

“Master, what are they doing? It looks so lively!”

Mu Tao asked curiously, her light brown eyes scanning the festive scene, seemingly enjoying it.

“They are celebrating the New Year,” Li Yu replied softly, a smile in her eyes. “It’s also called the Spring Festival, the first day of the first lunar month. After the New Year, it will be spring soon.”

There were no such festivals on Mount Chao Yao. Mu Tao nodded, not quite understanding, and followed Li Yu into an inn.

That night, the innkeeper gave them two plates of dumplings.

She said it was New Year’s Eve, her staff had gone home, there weren’t many guests, and she had made a lot of dumplings with her children. She had just cooked some and, feeling sympathetic towards the two travelers, brought them some extra.

“It’s New Year’s Eve; you have to eat dumplings. This is a gift, no charge.” The innkeeper smiled warmly. “Eat up! Let me know if you want more.”

Li Yu thanked her, and the innkeeper left.

Before they finished their dumplings, crackling sounds came from outside.

They walked to the window and looked down to see the innkeeper and her two children lighting firecrackers.

Mu Tao’s eyes widened. “Master, what are those? Can I play with them too?”

“Those are firecrackers,” Li Yu said, smiling. “If you want to try, you can ask them.”

Mu Tao called out, “Innkeeper! I want to light firecrackers too!”

The innkeeper looked up, surprised, then smiled and waved.

“Come down here, little girl!” she called out, her breath misting in the cold air.

Mu Tao, abandoning her dumplings, happily ran downstairs.

Li Yu smiled and shook her head, then took the remaining dumplings, walked to the window, leaned against the frame, and watched Mu Tao playing below, enjoying the night breeze.

There were no firecrackers on Mount Chao Yao. Mu Tao, fascinated by them, seemed even more excited than the two children.

Li Yu looked at her carefree smile and had a thought.

    Staying here…didn’t seem so bad…

  • Devilish Disciple [Transmigration] 54

Chapter 54: “Master Will Never Be Late”

Li Yu, without hesitation, led Mu Tao south, following the system’s guidance.

A formation blocking their path at the Spirit Restraint Hall, a no-fly zone over Mount Chao Yao, and countless cultivators, their power unknown, either intercepting them or pursuing them relentlessly!

These immortal sects were determined to eliminate the Demon Bone, practically setting up a dragnet over Mount Chao Yao.

The male protagonist hadn’t faced such obstacles in the original story!

As a severely injured person, receiving such “respect” made Li Yu feel the world’s malice converging upon her.

Fortunately, the system was being somewhat helpful, providing assistance without any noticeable side effects.

She repeatedly felt like she was reaching her limit, but somehow, she managed to keep going, like a final burst of energy before death.

Lost in these chaotic thoughts, a loud boom echoed from behind.

The formation created by the birds shattered, scattering them. The black mist at its core expanded, trying to block the pursuing cultivators.

Despite its best efforts, without the formation’s power, the mist was no match for them.

Countless lights zipped through the mist, continuing their pursuit.

Li Yu suddenly felt a chill that didn’t belong to winter.

It wasn’t her imagination; she saw resentment gathering in the sky.

Mu Tao, with her current temperament, couldn’t control the power of the Demon Bone.

Her sadness, her fear, her anger, all could trigger it.

No, even if she was destined for demonic cultivation, she couldn’t use the Heavenly Demon’s power now!

They were too close to the Upper Spirit Lamp; it might affect the seal!

And if Mu Tao used demonic energy to harm someone here, wouldn’t that prove she was a threat?

It didn’t matter what the other immortal sects thought, but Si Qinglan had entrusted Mu Tao to her, placing her complete trust in Li Yu.

Making that decision required immense resolve and meant facing the consequences alone.

Consequences she couldn’t even imagine, yet Si Qinglan hadn’t complained, just a simple “take care of yourself,” and shouldered the burden for both of them.

How could she let Si Qinglan regret her decision?

“Mu Tao.” Li Yu tightened her grip on Mu Tao’s hand and said firmly, “Don’t use that power, at least not now!”

The growing coldness in Mu Tao’s eyes flickered slightly.

“You can’t control it yet. Leave everything to me; I can get us out of here,” Li Yu whispered.

The strong wind almost swallowed her words.

But she knew Mu Tao could hear her.

Mu Tao’s breathing slowed, the coldness in her unfocused eyes gradually fading.

She lowered her gaze, seemingly regretting her earlier impulse.

She didn’t know why, but for a moment, she had wanted to kill everyone pursuing them.

It wasn’t what her master wanted…

But she had thought that if she killed them all, no one would be able to harm her master, no one would dare threaten her again.

Was it because of the Demon Bone?

Ever since returning to Mount Chao Yao, she had been imprisoned in the Spirit Restraint Hall.

Everyone said she had a Demon Bone, that she was connected to the Heavenly Demon, a threat to the world.

They seemed to be right; she had injured her master in Lingzhou and had just harbored murderous thoughts…

Her master, having guarded the Upper Spirit Lamp for over four thousand years, should have been the first to abandon her.

Yet, when everyone wanted her dead, only her master stood before her, shielding her, defying everyone else.

    She couldn’t…she couldn’t disappoint her master…

But could she truly control it?

Did she, with her Demon Bone, deserve her master’s kindness?

Amidst her panic, Li Yu’s voice echoed in her ears.

“The Demon Bone won’t corrupt your heart. After we leave here, I’ll teach you how to control it… It will become your power, a power you can use to protect yourself, a power you can use to obtain everything you desire.”

Mu Tao clung to every word, despite the howling wind.

She looked up, her red-rimmed eyes wide with disbelief, a flicker of hope igniting within her.

She would always remember this night, the wind and snow, her master holding her hand, running with her through the storm.

Behind them were the shouts of countless unfamiliar faces.

Their footprints in the snow, the vast world, it seemed that besides the cold wind, the snow, and the crescent moon, nothing else belonged to them.

She had become an outcast, seemingly without having done anything wrong.

But it didn’t matter anymore; she wasn’t afraid.

Her master would take her away from Mount Chao Yao, to a wider world.

With her master’s guidance, she would learn to control the terrifying power within her.

One day, she would be able to protect herself, protect her master…

    And obtain everything she desired.

The long, cold night seemed endless.

The deep blue light flickered in the darkness, as if it could mend the broken world.

Mu Tao didn’t know how long they had been running, nor where they were going.

She just looked at Li Yu, her mind blank, willingly following her to the ends of the earth.

Until they reached the end of the road, the boundless blue sea stretching before them.

A familiar figure stood at the edge of the water.

His robes billowed in the wind, his sword held firmly at his side, like an impassable barrier.

Their eyes met. Without a word, he moved his sword slightly, and the falling snow gathered around him.

A familiar formation rapidly expanded from where he stood.

The formation’s light surged upwards, transforming the snowflakes into countless ice shards, as if trying to encase the entire world in ice.

“Senior Brother…are you going to stop us too…” Mu Tao’s voice trembled.

Having run this far, Li Yu was too exhausted to think.

She instinctively gathered spiritual energy in her palm, then, hesitating whether to attack, noticed the sea behind Mo Yichu rapidly freezing over.

The ice extended outwards, towards the invisible mountain gate.

So this was Si Qinglan’s plan…

Li Yu pulled Mu Tao towards the formation.

The formation didn’t harm them; all the ice shards pointed towards their pursuers.

They ran across the ice, towards the distant flickering light of the broken mountain gate.

The ice behind them crumbled, the sea before them froze, the broken gate beckoning them like a distant beacon.

A wisp of black mist brushed past them, the little black bird and its flock flying towards the horizon, where the sky met the sea, without a word.

As the ice stopped forming, the blue light in the distance coalesced into a crane.

Li Yu pulled Mu Tao onto the crane and breathed a sigh of relief.

She shielded Mu Tao, glancing back at the ice formation on the shore, holding back their pursuers.

The shoreline was too far away; she could no longer see clearly.

The unreality of it all intensified.

    Had they truly escaped?

How long could Mo Yichu hold them off?

    Would they be caught?

【Don’t worry, Host, the no-fly zone won’t be lifted anytime soon. Even if they break through that defense, they won’t be able to catch up!】

    Then…

What would happen to the person who helped them escape…?

【Don’t feel guilty, Host. Justice will be served. The male protagonist is just an accomplice; his punishment will be much lighter than in the original story!】

【While it appears you’ve implicated the male protagonist, overall, you’ve performed a good deed!】

    Thank you very much!

Such comforting words, so subtly sarcastic.

    【Eek!】

But thinking about it, the system did have a point.

If it weren’t for her, the male protagonist’s fate would have been tragic.

First, risking everything to save the protagonist from the execution platform, then fleeing to the Demon Realm, enduring severe injuries, and severing their bond by shattering the Harmony Bells.

He almost died, then returned to Mount Chao Yao to face punishment alone.

His survival was entirely due to plot armor.

But that wasn’t the worst of it. The person he sacrificed everything to save became the world-destroying demon lord, killing his master, destroying his sect, crippling his cultivation, and toying with him mercilessly.

Compared to that, she was truly a benevolent benefactor.

If Mo Yichu knew his original fate, he would be eternally grateful to her.

Thinking this, Li Yu’s guilt lessened.

As the tension within her eased, the previously unnoticed pain surged through her body.

Fortunately, she remained conscious, her vision clear; otherwise, she and Mu Tao might have fallen into the seemingly endless ocean below.

The pain was intense, the exhaustion overwhelming, her breathing, which had just eased, becoming labored again.

She leaned heavily against Mu Tao.

Her protective spiritual energy seemed to have dissipated, perhaps to conserve energy for flight.

The cold wind made her shiver.

This was the first time she truly felt the cold of this world.

So this was how cold winter was on Mount Chao Yao.

“Master!” Mu Tao quickly took her cold hand, wanting to turn around, but Li Yu leaned against her, preventing her from moving. “Master, what’s wrong?”

She also wanted to know what was wrong.

    System, any insights?

【You’re not dying, Host. You can close your eyes and rest. The system will watch over the crane.】

    Not dying…that was good.

If there wasn’t any immediate danger, she really needed to rest.

“I’m fine, just…a bit tired,” Li Yu whispered, wrapping her arms around Mu Tao’s waist, seeking warmth. “Let me lean on you for a bit…just a bit…”

    “Alright…” Mu Tao replied softly.

    Her heart pounded erratically.

It beat so fast, so hard, she wanted to crush it within her chest.

Her master’s hand was so cold, colder than usual.

Her master’s body trembled slightly, as if afraid of the wind.

She saw snowflakes landing on her master’s hair, something that never happened before.

She suddenly resented the wind and snow.

But without them, her master wouldn’t be leaning on her.

Mu Tao lowered her gaze, suppressing the demonic energy, and conjured a faint light at her fingertip, gently enveloping her master.

She felt her master’s breath, her heartbeat, the most comforting sound in this lonely world.

The long, cold night seemed endless, but her heart gradually calmed.

If this ocean truly had no boundaries, if this long night never ended, as long as the moonlight remained, it wouldn’t be so bad…

She didn’t know why she had such a strange thought.

But for a moment, it felt as natural as breathing.

Perhaps, as long as she was with her master, anywhere was fine.

    Mu Tao smiled.

Li Yu woke up to the system’s alarm.

There wasn’t any immediate danger, but they were approaching the human realm. If they continued flying with spiritual power, they would have to conceal themselves.

She didn’t have enough spiritual energy left to maintain both spells simultaneously.

She took a deep breath and looked at Mu Tao.

Mu Tao was still in the same position, her head drooping, her eyes closed, a thin layer of snow covering her, a faint light flickering at her fingertips, held close to her chest.

    Li Yu froze.

That faint light, a thin layer of protective spiritual energy, was solely for her, maintained even in her sleep.

    This little girl…

With so little “clean” spiritual energy, not enough for herself, yet she gave it all to Li Yu.

Li Yu bit her lip, suppressing a surge of emotion, and reached out to brush the snow from Mu Tao’s hair.

Mu Tao stirred, opened her eyes, and turned around.

As their eyes met, Li Yu gently brushed the snow from Mu Tao’s eyelashes.

Mu Tao closed her eyes instinctively, then opened them again, seeing Li Yu smiling gently.

    “Master.”

    “Hmm?”

    “Master!”

“What is it?” Li Yu continued brushing the snow off her.

    “Master!!”

As Mu Tao called her name a third time, she threw her arms around Li Yu, hugging her tightly.

The embrace was so tight it made Li Yu’s breath catch.

But she didn’t push her away, just gently patted her back.

“I missed you so much,” Mu Tao mumbled, her face buried in Li Yu’s embrace.

She said she had missed her terribly, constantly thinking about her.

The Spirit Restraint Hall was dark and cold, the soul-restraining barriers making it difficult even to activate the Harmony Bells. She hated that place, she was afraid of that place.

Qin Yuan and her senior brother often visited, but they never mentioned what the others outside planned to do with her, but she knew, she had always known.

Everyone wanted her dead; the guards had told her.

She desperately wanted to return to her master but was also terrified of never being able to.

She hadn’t forgotten her master’s promise to protect her, no matter what.

Her fear wasn’t from doubting her master, but from knowing that this was a serious matter, a burden not easily borne.

She was afraid she wasn’t worthy of her master’s protection, she felt she wasn’t worthy.

She said she thought about it every day.

Whenever she was alone, she would huddle in a corner and think.

Before the Harmony Bells chimed, she wondered if her master hadn’t contacted her because she was still unconscious, or because she had abandoned her.

After the bells started chiming, she wondered if her master’s silence was because the time wasn’t right, or because she was preparing to abandon her.

It was like two voices arguing in her head.

One saying that her master would never abandon her, the other saying that she was a burden, and protecting her would cost her master dearly…

She had thought about it countless times.

She still clung to a sliver of hope, hoping for her master’s protection.

But hope was intertwined with reason.

She repeatedly told herself that even if her master abandoned her, she shouldn’t resent her.

Because only by abandoning her could her master be safe…

Mu Tao’s words, choked with tears, each one like a drop of water, fell heavily on Li Yu’s heart.

Although soft, each word resonated deeply.

Li Yu: “What were you thinking last night?”

Mu Tao: “I was thinking…I will never doubt Master again.”

She leaned against Li Yu and continued softly—

Her master had left Mount Chao Yao for her, abandoned everything, even defied the entire immortal world.

She felt both incredibly guilty and incredibly happy.

She must be the most selfish person in the world…

“You’re not…” Li Yu gently stroked Mu Tao’s hair, her voice filled with heartache. “You’ve already thought too much for my sake…”

Li Yu knew Mu Tao was sensitive.

She knew that Mu Tao must have been scared and sad in the Spirit Restraint Hall…

But she didn’t know the extent of her suffering, her internal struggles.

She couldn’t imagine how Mu Tao endured those cold, dark nights, knowing her life was in danger…

All because of a single promise?

Li Yu lowered her gaze. “I…came too late…”

Mu Tao shook her head softly. “Master will never be late.”

As long as her master came, it was never too late.

She had waited for over two hundred years at Chaoxi Pond; how could she not endure a mere twenty days?

Her master’s touch was even gentler than she remembered.

Such a wonderful master, how could she be late…

Thinking this, Mu Tao closed her eyes again.

Only when the crane landed did she leave Li Yu’s embrace.

As they touched down, Li Yu used her remaining spiritual energy to conceal Mu Tao’s demonic aura.

As the light from her fingertips faded, she looked at the unfamiliar, desolate landscape.

“Master, where…where are we going?” Mu Tao tugged at her sleeve.

    Li Yu: “The Demon Realm.”

    Mu Tao: “The Demon Realm?”

Li Yu: “Only there…are you safe.”

Mu Tao: “Where is the Demon Realm?”

Li Yu thought for a moment, then replied softly, “The Demon Realm…is a dark and desolate place.”

She said that it was cold, dark, barren, with no concept of right or wrong, only the law of the jungle.

The inhabitants of the Demon Realm had long lifespans but didn’t enter reincarnation.

They were born with considerable power. If it weren’t for their inability to withstand the heat of the human realm, they would have long since escaped their dark, barren world and invaded.

    Li Yu sighed softly.

In the original story, the protagonist, relying on the power of her Demon Bone, gradually gained a foothold in the Demon Realm, eventually becoming the Demon Lord, leading the demons to invade the human realm with the promise of “freezing the human world forever.”

It was a cool storyline, but she no longer liked it.

Now, she just wanted to find a safe place in the Demon Realm with Mu Tao, patiently helping her master the power of the Demon Bone.

Once Mu Tao could freely use that power, like in the latter half of the novel, they would be truly safe…

Mu Tao: “Do we…have to go?”

Li Yu stroked her hair. “I’ll protect you.”

Mu Tao’s eyes widened. After a moment of silence, she nodded obediently.

Li Yu could see the worry in her eyes.

She thought for a moment, then said softly, “If you don’t like it there, we can always sneak back to the human realm.”

    Mu Tao: “Really?”

“Mm, once you can control your power, you won’t be a danger to the human realm. Then you can return anytime.” Li Yu winked and lowered her voice conspiratorially, “We’ll do it secretly, without telling anyone!”

Mu Tao’s face lit up with joy.

Seeing her happy expression eased Li Yu’s fatigue and pain.

She also looked forward to that day.

Then, she could take Mu Tao away from the Demon Realm, show her the places she had never seen, let her try the food she had never tasted…

That day, she believed, wouldn’t be too far away.

  • Devilish Disciple [Transmigration] 53

Chapter 53: “Don’t Be Afraid, Come With Me.”

Si Qinglan’s voice was soft, devoid of blame, just a hint of confusion, as if she couldn’t see the path ahead.

“Li Yu, you’re leaving Mount Chao Yao, aren’t you?”

Li Yu opened her mouth but didn’t know how to respond.

“It’s fine. I was surprised when you arrived here.” Si Qinglan said calmly. “Mount Chao Yao’s current state…it’s thanks to you. If you want to leave, I have no right to stop you.”

She stood by the window, looking at the snow, her back to Li Yu.

    She seemed sad.

In Li Yu’s impression, Si Qinglan was someone who openly expressed her emotions.

This was the first time she had seen her hide her feelings so quietly.

But she wasn’t very good at hiding them; Li Yu could still see her sadness.

A deep sense of guilt washed over Li Yu.

Every choice came with a price.

The original owner’s choice was to abandon Mu Tao, appease the other immortal sects, and protect the Upper Spirit Lamp and Mount Chao Yao.

    Her choice was the opposite.

After she and Mu Tao left, Si Qinglan would have to face many difficult problems alone.

But she had to do this because she knew the consequences of choosing the other path.

The scenes she had once found satisfying in the novel were now things she desperately wanted to avoid.

“Look on the bright side, after I leave, the Upper Spirit Lamp will also be gone, and Mount Chao Yao will be peaceful again.” Li Yu said softly. “When Lingyao Revered One wakes up, who would dare look down on Mount Chao Yao?”

Si Qinglan: “Please, if you’re not here, will he even stay after waking up?”

    Li Yu: “…”

Damn, she forgot he was here for the original Li Yu.

Si Qinglan turned around and smiled nonchalantly. “Fine, as you said, after you leave, the Upper Spirit Lamp will also be gone. As long as this big trouble you brought back is gone, I can handle the rest myself.”

“Do what you think is right.” She sighed and looked at Li Yu, her eyes filled with complex emotions. “Take care of yourself after you leave.”

Li Yu nodded slightly and raised her hands.

A blue light flickered in her palms, then faded, revealing the icy blue lotus lamp.

Si Qinglan looked at the familiar lamp, sighed softly after a moment of silence, and then, with a flick of her wrist, made it disappear.

“I can delay the demon-slaying formation for another five days. After that, you’re on your own,” she said, turning and walking out of the room.

Watching Si Qinglan leave, a mix of emotions swirled within Li Yu.

She took a deep breath and walked to the window, her steps slightly unsteady.

She wondered if the flowers and plants Si Qinglan tended could sense her emotions; their colors seemed less vibrant than usual.

    Perhaps it was her imagination.

No matter how powerful she was, she was still just an ordinary person, prone to interpreting things through a mortal lens.

Si Qinglan, having lived for so long, surely had a broader perspective.

Even if she felt sad, it would be temporary.

Si Qinglan had said that the demon-slaying formation would be ready in three days at most. Time was running out.

Even if she objected now, it would only strengthen their resolve.

Her condition was much better than before,

But there were many powerful cultivators among those who came to Mount Chao Yao, including immortals; a direct confrontation would be futile.

It seemed that Li Yu, the Exalted Immortal, would have to resort to…less honorable methods.

Thinking this, she raised her right hand and conjured a spiritual butterfly.

The butterfly fluttered its wings, trailing blue light.

She watched as it flew away, towards the distant Lingzhou, against the wind and snow.

The Harmony Bells on her wrist chimed softly; the little girl who couldn’t be by her side was sending her greetings.

    The soft chimes comforted her.

With so many outsiders on Mount Chao Yao, rescuing Mu Tao was fraught with uncertainty.

Si Qinglan could only delay them for a few more days; she had to use this time to recover as much strength as possible.

Rescuing someone wasn’t a guaranteed success, and if something went wrong after the formation was completed, Mu Tao would be in grave danger, with no time for escape.

After a brief deliberation, Li Yu gave herself three days.

Three days later, regardless of her condition, she would leave Mount Chao Yao with Mu Tao.

On the third day, Si Qinglan brought her more news about Mu Tao.

“I’ve asked Little Qin Yuan to deliver your message to Mu Tao.” Si Qinglan said. “Don’t worry, I relayed it word for word!”

Her tone sounded strange, a hint of annoyance perhaps.

But Si Qinglan was often moody, so Li Yu just asked curiously, “What did Mu Tao say?”

“She didn’t say anything, just smiled foolishly.”

Si Qinglan sat down at the table and poured herself a cup of hot tea.

Knowing Li Yu’s concern for Mu Tao, she elaborated.

She said Qin Yuan delivered the message that morning.

This was the first time Mu Tao had heard anything about, or from, Li Yu since being imprisoned.

The unexpected message surprised and delighted her.

But the content of the message wasn’t one of concern or comfort, just a simple complaint.

“‘The food at Qianlizhu isn’t very good’?” The little girl blinked, a flicker of worry crossing her face, then replaced by a joyful smile.

Qin Yuan, not understanding Mu Tao’s reaction, assumed the strangely humorous message had amused her.

She didn’t find it funny herself, but to avoid Mu Tao laughing alone, she played along. “The food at Qianlizhu is indeed terrible!”

“Is it that bad?” Mu Tao asked.

“Not that bad, but you’re such a good cook, Master Li Yu is used to your cooking, she’s probably being picky!”

Qin Yuan said that Mu Tao looked incredibly happy at that moment.

She hadn’t seen her so happy since she was imprisoned.

Si Qinglan sighed. “Your little disciple…her world revolves around you.”

Li Yu didn’t ask anything further, just smiled faintly, lowering her gaze.

Si Qinglan looked at the tea in her cup, her gaze unfocused as she watched the steam rise and dissipate.

Everyone on Mount Chao Yao knew about the demon-slaying formation, but Qin Yuan, after much hesitation, hadn’t told Mu Tao.

After returning to Qianlizhu, she seemed slightly dejected.

“Seeing Mu Tao so happy made me feel sad… She has no idea how many people want her dead…” Qin Yuan followed Si Qinglan, her head lowered, and asked softly, “Master, why is Mu Tao a demon?”

Si Qinglan didn’t know how to answer this.

People often talked about cause and effect, but many things in life had no clear explanation.

She only knew that over two hundred years ago, she met Mu Tao in the human realm…

At that time, Mu Tao was just a little wolf demon, unable to transform, unable to even speak.

But this little wolf demon had the purest eyes and the most demonic body.

It had been over four thousand years since the last war between gods and demons; she didn’t know why a Demon Bone, which shouldn’t exist anymore, would appear in such a young spirit.

She could only tell Qin Yuan, “She’s had the Demon Bone ever since I met her.”

Qin Yuan frowned. “Does having a Demon Bone mean she will definitely harm the world?”

Si Qinglan replied softly, “The Demon Bone resonates with demonic souls. If the seal on the Upper Spirit Lamp is ever broken, the demonic soul will immediately seek out the Demon Bone, and when they merge, the Heavenly Demon will be revived.”

Qin Yuan then asked, “Will the Heavenly Demon devour her consciousness?”

    “Yes,” Si Qinglan replied firmly.

“What if her will is strong enough?” Qin Yuan asked again.

“Even the heart of an ancient god can’t withstand the Heavenly Demon’s corruption.”

“Then…” Qin Yuan bit her lip and asked softly, “What happens if the Demon Bone is destroyed? If the seal on the Upper Spirit Lamp is broken, will the Heavenly Demon still be revived?”

“Yes, but without a physical vessel, the demonic soul needs time to gather resentment and form a body.”

“Then what’s the point of destroying the Demon Bone?”

“To quell the fear in their hearts.”

Qin Yuan was silent for a moment, then muttered, “That’s not fair to Mu Tao.”

Si Qinglan sighed softly but didn’t answer.

The Demon Bone wasn’t the only vessel for a demonic soul.

Even without it, if the resentment in the human realm exceeded its capacity, the Heavenly Demon would eventually be revived.

Those clamoring for the Demon Bone’s destruction knew this.

They simply feared the Heavenly Demon’s power.

The demonic soul couldn’t be destroyed, but the Demon Bone could.

If destroying it could ease their fear, why wouldn’t they do it?

As Qin Yuan had said, it wasn’t fair to Mu Tao.

    But who cared?

Everyone had witnessed the phenomenon in Lingzhou.

The Demon Bone could easily attract and absorb resentment.

If Li Yu hadn’t suppressed Mu Tao’s demonic energy in time, the consequences would have been disastrous.

No one would allow such a dangerous power to exist within a newly transformed demon.

Because no one could guarantee that she would never lose control, never succumb to her desires, never use that power to release the Heavenly Demon Soul Seed.

Even if she never had such intentions, as long as she possessed that power, as long as she could do it, her existence was a threat.

It wasn’t entirely their fault for being selfish; every time the Heavenly Demon was revived, the human realm suffered immensely.

No one could bear such consequences.

They weren’t Li Yu, Qin Yuan, or anyone who knew and trusted Mu Tao; naturally, they couldn’t gamble the future of the human realm on the belief that this little wolf demon would never lose control.

So, fairness didn’t matter, and neither did the little wolf demon’s innocence.

Destroying the Demon Bone would make the Upper Spirit Lamp safer, make the human realm safer, and that was all that mattered.

Si Qinglan put down her teacup and looked at Li Yu, her mind racing, unsure what to say.

After a moment of thought, she conjured a jade token and placed it on the table.

Li Yu’s gaze was drawn to the token.

Si Qinglan: “Although the guards outside the Spirit Restraint Hall aren’t our people, you can open all the barriers inside with this.”

    Li Yu: “…”

Si Qinglan: “It will save you some effort.”

Li Yu: “Will they…cause trouble for you because of this?”

Si Qinglan pouted, rested her chin on her hands, and shrugged. “What does it have to do with me? Is Cangming Revered One not worthy of possessing the Spirit Restraint Hall’s token?”

Li Yu couldn’t help but chuckle. “Technically, I didn’t have it before.”

“You used to be cooped up at Chaoxi Pond all day, never leaving your courtyard. Even if you had it, would you have used it?” Si Qinglan looked down at the jade token. “I made three of these, yours even has your name on it. I didn’t give it to you before because I thought you didn’t need it, and you would have just found it annoying…”

    Li Yu took the token.

As Si Qinglan had said, the green jade token was engraved with the character “Yu.”

Si Qinglan: “Anyway, I’m not the only one who has this, so if something goes wrong, don’t blame it all on me.”

Li Yu: “Thank you, Si Qinglan.”

    Si Qinglan froze, shifting uncomfortably.

After a moment of silence, she stood up, sighed heavily, and said seriously, “The human realm won’t tolerate that girl. Take her to the Demon Realm, far away from the Upper Spirit Lamp. It’s safer for everyone.”

    Li Yu: “Alright…”

Si Qinglan: “Those artifacts I gave you before can only fool those with low cultivation. They probably won’t be of much use this time, don’t embarrass yourself with them.”

    Li Yu: “Alright.”

Si Qinglan: “By the way, head south when you leave the mountain.”

    Li Yu: “Alright.”

Si Qinglan: “This is all I can do for you.”

    Li Yu: “Mm.”

Si Qinglan: “You better not let me see you again, or I really will intervene.”

    Li Yu: “Mm.”

Si Qinglan left without another word, just like usual.

But this time, as if anticipating something, she removed the barrier that had been around Li Yu’s residence.

Li Yu knew this barrier wasn’t just to keep outsiders away but also to…protect her from herself.

Not to prevent her from doing anything, but to prevent her from acting impulsively at the wrong time.

But now, there was no “right time” left.

She understood, and so did Si Qinglan.

With the barrier gone, their casual chats were also over.

She would miss this colleague, whom she had known for less than a year.

But then she thought that her arrival and her choices had changed Si Qinglan’s fate, saving her from certain death in the original story, and she felt a sense of satisfaction.

After Si Qinglan left, Li Yu sat by the window, meditating and cultivating until nightfall.

She stood up, took a deep breath, and, for the first time since waking up, left her room.

Her feet sank slightly into the snow, a strange sense of unreality washing over her.

She couldn’t believe that she, a law-abiding citizen of the 21st century, who rarely even jaywalked, would one day be breaking someone out of prison.

    Hopefully, everything would go smoothly!

Li Yu concealed herself with a spell, exhaled heavily, and said, “System, lead the way!”

    【Right away!】

A faint golden line appeared in the snowy night, guiding her towards an unfamiliar direction. She followed, her steps leaving no trace in the snow.

The Spirit Restraint Hall wasn’t too far from Qianlizhu. With the speed-enhancing technique, she soon saw the heavily guarded prison.

It was late, but disciples from various sects were still stationed around the perimeter.

Their seemingly random, yet patterned positions clearly formed a defensive formation.

Having been tricked before, formations now gave Li Yu a headache.

But regardless of her headache, she had to enter.

After taking three deep breaths, she steeled her resolve.

Fortunately, these disciples couldn’t see through her concealment spell. She nervously, cautiously, and stealthily entered the Spirit Restraint Hall.

The security inside was lax; the guards seemed to be Mount Chao Yao disciples.

Li Yu followed the system’s guidance and found Mu Tao’s cell.

Approaching the cell door, she finally saw Mu Tao.

Moonlight, filtering through the high iron bars, fell on the girl’s thin shoulders.

She sat curled up on a bed of straw, her eyes closed.

Three soul-restraining barriers glowed faintly around the cell, silently imprisoning her.

Her clothes were dirty, and her small frame seemed even thinner than before.

Li Yu silently gripped the cold bars.

As if sensing her presence, Mu Tao suddenly opened her eyes.

She sat up and looked towards the cell door, confused.

A flicker of disappointment crossed her eyes, and she hugged her knees, curling up again.

Just as Si Qinglan had said, she was quiet and well-behaved, as always.

Suddenly, the Harmony Bells on her wrist chimed softly.

    Mu Tao’s eyes widened.

The sound of the other bells was so close!

“Master?” She scrambled to her feet and rushed to the cell door.

Before her hands could touch the bars, a flash of light, and the barriers around her silently dissipated.

The cell door crumbled into specks of light.

An invisible hand gently grasped her wrist.

The disciples guarding the Hall, alerted by the commotion, rushed towards them.

“Who’s there?! How dare you trespass in the Spirit Restraint Hall!”

Someone shouted, conjuring an unfamiliar artifact.

    “Let’s go!”

A familiar voice echoed beside her, and a blinding light enveloped them.

The concealment spell around her dissipated.

She finally saw the person she had been longing for, but tears blurred her vision.

As the spell faded, the guards froze.

They stared at Li Yu, at Mu Tao beside her, unsure whether to bow or attack.

Li Yu took a step forward, and the disciples instinctively took three steps back.

This small victory gave her confidence.

Her expression hardened, and she said coldly, “Move.”

That single word, spoken so coldly, terrified the juniors, who quickly stepped aside, flattening themselves against the wall.

Li Yu, also surprised by their reaction, didn’t waste any time, pulling Mu Tao towards the exit.

The commotion had alerted the guards outside.

The moment they stepped out of the Hall, a formation activated, trapping them in a golden light.

Li Yu felt her already depleted spiritual energy being suppressed.

    System, time to work!

She thought this, raising her hand without hesitation.

A soft blue light emanated from her palm, seemingly weak, yet it distorted the world around them.

The distortion vanished, and the golden light shattered into countless particles, scattering in the wind and snow.

The disciples who created the formation looked on in terror, hesitant to approach.

In that moment of hesitation, Li Yu, guided by the system, ran towards the south with Mu Tao.

Signal flares, like fireworks, bloomed in the night sky, momentarily obscuring the stars and the moon.

Countless lights chased after them, but they were blocked by flashes of blue light.

Li Yu could feel her remaining strength rapidly dwindling—this couldn’t continue; she couldn’t maintain this for long.

Suddenly, a flock of birds appeared, circling and forming a formation in the sky!

Black mist arose from the center of the formation, blocking the pursuing lights.

    There were no words exchanged.

Li Yu knew that the Linchi bird demons couldn’t hold them off for long.

She instinctively tried to summon the crane but found that the spiritual energy dissipated before it could take form.

    System! What’s happening?!

    【It’s an invisible no-fly zone!】

    A no-fly zone?

    Since when?!

【The various immortal sects, to prevent the Demon Bone’s escape, created a temporary barrier in the past half month. Within this barrier, no one can fly using spiritual power, and it covers the entire Mount Chao Yao!】

    …Seriously?!

This wasn’t in the original story!

【Because in the original story, Li Yu agreed to destroy the Demon Bone.】

So they were guarding against her!

No wonder Si Qinglan told her to head south; she must have prepared something there!

As Li Yu was thinking this, the formation created by the hundreds of Linchi birds began to crumble.

Mu Tao clutched her wrist tightly, her eyes filled with anxiety.

A faint demonic aura flickered around her.

Li Yu, seemingly unfazed, gently patted her head. “Don’t be afraid, come with me.”

    The demonic aura vanished instantly.

Chapter 52: She Did Have Some Regrets

So Mu Tao was being guarded by outsiders now…

In the original story, although many people from other immortal sects came to Mount Chao Yao after the theft of the Upper Spirit Lamp and the awakening of the Demon Bone, the protagonist was captured and imprisoned by her own master.

But now, outsiders were guarding Mu Tao. It seemed the changes to the timeline had made things much more difficult for Mount Chao Yao.

“Is…is she alright?” Li Yu asked. “Are they mistreating her?”

“More and more people are arriving at Mount Chao Yao, almost all of them here to discuss what to do with Mu Tao.” Si Qinglan said. “She is, after all, your only disciple. Since you’re unconscious and haven’t expressed your opinion, they haven’t decided on a course of action, and they don’t dare act rashly.”

    Li Yu: “…”

Si Qinglan: “They haven’t mistreated her yet, but…Mount Chao Yao’s current situation…we might not be able to protect her.”

    Li Yu: “…”

    Si Qinglan: “They’re all saying…”

    Li Yu: “Saying what?”

Si Qinglan pouted and lowered her voice. “They’re saying that you, as the guardian of the Upper Spirit Lamp, kept a Demon Bone by your side, perhaps with ulterior motives…that you should hand over the Lamp, and the Demon Bone should be destroyed…”

    Li Yu frowned.

She remembered that in the original story, the other immortal sects didn’t demand the Upper Spirit Lamp, only that Mount Chao Yao destroy the Demon Bone.

Her own weakened state must have emboldened them.

“Anyone who wants the Upper Spirit Lamp can have it,” Li Yu said in a low voice, exhaling slowly, her tone firm. “As for Mu Tao, I will never hand her over.”

Si Qinglan sighed and looked out the window. “In the past, they wouldn’t dare speak to us like this.”

Mentioning this, Si Qinglan started another tirade.

She said that Mount Chao Yao, although located in the East Sea of the human realm, was under the jurisdiction of the Heavenly Realm.

After the battle four thousand years ago, the ancient gods fell, and the Heavenly Realm was severely weakened. To recover, they only left one Heavenly Gate open for the human realm.

The Heavenly Gate couldn’t be opened without divine or demonic power. After that battle, Li Yu was the only god willing to remain in the human realm, so the Heavenly Gate was left on Mount Chao Yao.

This gate, hidden amidst the mountains and the sea, was the only path for terrestrial immortals to ascend to the Heavenly Realm.

As the only connection to the Heavenly Realm, and with the Three Revered Ones guarding it, Mount Chao Yao had always been the leader among human immortal sects, a place revered by countless cultivators.

In the past, when the mountain gate was closed, even finding Mount Chao Yao was difficult for other sects.

And when they occasionally opened the mountain gates, those who came were always respectful, their intentions to curry favor obvious.

But ever since the mountain gate was broken and the Upper Spirit Lamp stolen, many outsiders had arrived.

These uninvited guests, all claiming to want to help, acted as if they owned the place, completely disrespectful.

“Bad news travels fast! You left, and they arrived right after!” Si Qinglan’s voice was filled with anger. “Mount Chao Yao lost the Upper Spirit Lamp, you weren’t here, Weisheng was in hibernation, and those opportunistic bastards, seeing my weakened state, acted as if I was nothing!”

    “…”

“I waited so long for your news, and it wasn’t even good news.” Si Qinglan’s sigh was heavier than usual. “I thought that with you back, they would behave, but you returned unconscious, and you’ve been like this for seven days!”

“Seven days?” Li Yu was surprised. “I was…unconscious for seven days…?”

“Yes, seven days!” Si Qinglan said exasperatedly. “If you hadn’t woken up, I would have thought you were going into a long slumber like Weisheng! Do you know how many people have been demanding to see you? I blocked them all! If they saw you like this, they wouldn’t even show us the slightest respect!”

    “…”

“I’ve heard so many sarcastic remarks these past few days!”

    “…”

“A dragon stranded in shallow water is bullied by shrimps, a tiger fallen into a plain is mocked by dogs…” Si Qinglan fumed. “The current Mount Chao Yao is like a leaky house in a downpour, a broken ship in a storm, a plucked phoenix is no better than a chicken!”

Si Qinglan’s voice was filled with indignation, venting the frustration she had bottled up.

Li Yu pretended to listen attentively but had already zoned out.

Hearing that she had been unconscious for seven days, she immediately checked the system stats.

And the numbers made her feel unwell.

    【Character Compatibility: 60%】

    【Current Protagonist Blackening Value: 65%】

The protagonist’s blackening value increasing was one thing, but her own compatibility dropping so drastically was terrifying!

In the past, this would have been an instant game over!

System, explain! Who deducted these points?!

【Not a specific person, Host. It’s the general sentiment within Mount Chao Yao, both inside and outside, towards you.】

    What?

【With the Demon Bone awakened, and her being your only disciple, you have been unconscious since returning, without addressing the situation publicly like the original owner would have. This has caused suspicion and discontent.】

    Address the situation? How?

Was she supposed to abandon Mu Tao like the original owner, just to regain her prestige?

    Absolutely not!

She knew the consequences of hurting Mu Tao at this point.

    She had to stay calm.

It was only 60%; there was still room to fall. No need to panic.

She had been on the verge of death countless times; her mental fortitude was stronger than before. She wasn’t afraid.

Thinking this, Li Yu calmed down slightly.

Si Qinglan was still complaining; if no one interrupted her, she would probably continue until sunset.

Li Yu sighed and grabbed her wrist.

Si Qinglan froze and looked down. “What? Why are you suddenly grabbing me?”

Li Yu: “I want to see Mu Tao.”

Si Qinglan sighed, her eyes filled with both worry and exasperation. “Can’t you rest for a couple more days?”

    Li Yu: “…”

Si Qinglan: “In your current state, can you even walk?”

    Li Yu: “…”

Si Qinglan: “If those people outside see how weak you are, Little Taotao’s situation will only worsen.”

Li Yu: “She’ll be scared without me…”

“Little Qin Yuan has been visiting and chatting with her, and Little Mo Yichu also went to check on her.” Si Qinglan said softly. “Don’t worry, she’s been very quiet and well-behaved, not scared at all.”

    “Not scared at all…?”

“Yes.” Si Qinglan nodded. “She said you would protect her.”

    “…”

“So you should focus on recovering and regaining your strength!” Si Qinglan patted Li Yu’s hand. “Only then can we protect her.”

Li Yu’s eyes unfocused for a moment, then she asked, “How can I recover quickly?”

“I’ve used every spiritual medicine available at Qianlizhu. I’m also low on spiritual energy now and can’t create anything better.” Si Qinglan said seriously, “Since you’re awake, once you regain some strength, you can circulate your spiritual energy and accelerate the healing process.”

Li Yu asked, “How do I circulate my spiritual energy?”

Si Qinglan froze, her mouth opening and closing, clearly not understanding the question.

Seeing her confused look, Li Yu repeated the question, “How do I circulate my spiritual energy?”

Si Qinglan placed her hand on Li Yu’s forehead.

Si Qinglan: “Have you lost your mind?”

Li Yu: “I’ve lost my mind.”

    Si Qinglan: “You…”

    Li Yu: “Teach me.”

Their eyes met in the silent room.

Li Yu saw a complex, unreadable expression in Si Qinglan’s eyes, an expression she had never seen before.

She knew this question would arouse suspicion, but she had no one else to ask.

Mount Chao Yao was facing immense pressure; she didn’t have time to figure this out on her own. She had to recover quickly to face the inevitable.

Si Qinglan was her only hope.

“I need to recover quickly, help me.”

    “…”

    “Si Qinglan?”

    “…”

After a long silence, Si Qinglan sighed deeply.

She looked down at the pale Li Yu and chuckled softly. “How strange, Li Yu, you’re actually asking me for help.”

    “I…”

“Since you’ve lost your mind, I suppose I can help you.” Si Qinglan asked casually, “So eager, can you even sit up?”

Li Yu chuckled softly. “I just did, and you pushed me back down.”

Si Qinglan: “Then sit up, and I’ll teach you—how—to—circulate—your—spiritual—energy!”

Her sarcastic tone was both amusing and exasperating.

Fortunately, Si Qinglan didn’t ask any further questions, just patiently guided her in circulating her spiritual energy after she sat up.

Initially, Li Yu struggled, so Si Qinglan used her own spiritual energy to guide her, allowing her to clearly feel its flow through her meridians.

During this process, Si Qinglan sensed the damage to Li Yu’s meridians and frowned, muttering about her neglecting her injuries and letting her condition worsen.

Li Yu didn’t dare speak, silently accepting the scolding.

She hadn’t understood these things before, just lying in bed whenever she was injured.

Now that she thought about it, the last time she circulated her spiritual energy was probably the day she arrived in this world.

Regardless, she finally understood how to do it now.

After teaching her, Si Qinglan said she had to deal with the outsiders and reluctantly left.

Seemingly worried, before leaving, she added, “I know you’re worried about Mu Tao, but the bigger picture is more important. Don’t leave this place until you’ve fully recovered.”

    “Mm,” Li Yu nodded.

Even that small movement made her head feel heavy.

After Si Qinglan left, she continued circulating her spiritual energy, despite her fatigue.

When she opened her eyes again, dusk had fallen.

She felt slightly better, just slightly.

Snow was still falling outside, but the barrier prevented it from entering the room.

Li Yu suddenly thought of her residence at Chaoxi Pond.

Had it been snowing this heavily all these days?

The little snowman in the courtyard, without spiritual energy protection, must be buried under the snow.

Thankfully, the ice flower by the window wouldn’t melt. Otherwise, everything would have changed during her absence.

Thinking this, Li Yu looked down at the Harmony Bells on her wrist.

After a brief hesitation, she infused them with a sliver of spiritual energy.

Almost instantly, the other bells chimed softly in response.

Two soft chimes, then silence, like her little disciple’s gentle greeting.

In the novel, the Spirit Restraint Hall was Mount Chao Yao’s prison, used to confine disciples and spirits who committed serious offenses, as well as captured demons and monsters.

Every cell had a barrier that suppressed spiritual energy, and for those with high cultivation, more powerful restraints were used.

Li Yu remembered the place as cold, damp, and filled with eerie sounds.

The little protagonist in the original story was terrified of that place, constantly crying after being imprisoned there by her master.

Si Qinglan saying that Mu Tao had been quiet and well-behaved, not making a fuss, sounded like a comforting lie.

But it was good that Qin Yuan and Mo Yichu had visited her.

At least they knew about her Demon Bone and hadn’t abandoned her. Their visits showed their support, which should offer Mu Tao some comfort.

Compared to the original story, there were more people on Mu Tao’s side now.

Perhaps the situation wasn’t as dire as she had imagined.

Si Qinglan could still control the outsiders for now, but it wouldn’t last.

If this crucial plot point was unavoidable, no matter what she did, Mu Tao would eventually be bound to the execution platform.

And in that situation, Si Qinglan would prioritize Mount Chao Yao and wouldn’t interfere.

In the original story, there was still the male protagonist who would risk everything to save her, but Mu Tao and Mo Yichu weren’t close enough now. Even if he felt sympathy, he wouldn’t dare defy the immortal sects.

She had to recover quickly to protect Mu Tao.

Li Yu sighed and infused the Harmony Bells with another sliver of spiritual energy, a silent response, a silent promise.

She closed her eyes and circulated her spiritual energy, then, exhausted, lay down and fell asleep.

Since waking up, Li Yu often heard the Harmony Bells chiming softly.

Every morning, afternoon, and evening, two soft chimes, like her little disciple’s daily greetings.

    The sound comforted her.

Without Mu Tao by her side, even the most delicious meals felt bland.

Fortunately, Qin Yuan occasionally brought news about Mu Tao from the Spirit Restraint Hall, and Si Qinglan relayed these messages to her.

Qin Yuan said that Mu Tao had been a bit gloomy initially, but after learning that Li Yu had woken up, she seemed much happier.

The food in the Spirit Restraint Hall was terrible, so Qin Yuan always snuck in some treats for Mu Tao.

Because of this, the two girls were scolded more than once by the disciples guarding the Hall.

But both Qin Yuan and Mu Tao always accepted the scoldings with good grace.

The disciples, seeing their pitiful expressions, couldn’t bring themselves to say much, just muttering, “Don’t do it again.”

But them not repeating the offense was unlikely.

Qin Yuan, although always accepting reprimands with humility, never learned her lesson.

After a few incidents, she even discovered something new.

When Mo Yichu brought food, the disciples didn’t dare say anything.

So, whenever she wanted to bring Mu Tao treats, she would ask Mo Yichu to accompany her.

And then she would complain about the disciples’ double standards.

Qin Yuan: “What’s wrong with them? Do they think my cultivation is too low, or that Master Li Yu doesn’t have enough face?!”

Si Qinglan, hearing this, closed her eyes and said calmly, “It’s because your cultivation is too low.”

Admitting her own lack of “face” was impossible.

Seeing the amusement in Li Yu’s eyes, she quickly added, “If I went, those juniors wouldn’t dare say a word!”

    “Mm-hmm.”

“Little Qin Yuan is still young, her temperament and cultivation far inferior to Little Mo Yichu’s. It’s normal for the disciples not to give her special treatment!” Si Qinglan frowned. “What do you mean, ‘my face isn’t enough’? I’m the one managing everything on Mount Chao Yao; how could my face be any less valuable? Little Taotao is also ostracized, why don’t they say your face isn’t enough?!”

It was clear that Si Qinglan was frustrated with the outsiders.

Mentioning “face” was like poking a sore spot, triggering her indiscriminate rage.

Realizing she had digressed, Si Qinglan returned to the topic.

“By the way, Little Qin Yuan said that Little Taotao is worried about your health… That girl can’t keep secrets, so I didn’t tell her about your condition, and she couldn’t tell Mu Tao anything specific.”

    Li Yu: “…”

Si Qinglan: “If you have any message for Little Taotao, tell me, and I’ll ask Qin Yuan to deliver it.”

Li Yu thought for a moment, then, feeling that there wasn’t anything important to say, just smiled and said, “Just tell her…that the food at Qianlizhu isn’t very good.”

Si Qinglan took a deep breath, her hand raising and lowering several times as if wanting to point at her, then she restrained herself.

    “Li Yu, you’re unbelievable.”

    “Just being honest.”

“You’ve been living here, enjoying free food and medicine, not to mention all the rare herbs and elixirs.” Si Qinglan placed her hands on her hips. “I haven’t even complained, and you’re criticizing the food here!”

“Alright, alright, don’t be angry,” Li Yu chuckled. “Come to Chaoxi Pond sometime, and I’ll have Mu Tao cook you a good meal.”

Si Qinglan gritted her teeth, falling silent.

After a moment, she muttered, “Little Taotao’s cooking is indeed good, you’re lucky to have her… Why don’t I have such a talented disciple?”

Li Yu smiled, lowering her gaze.

Si Qinglan sighed regretfully. “If it weren’t for you taking her to Chaoxi Pond, I would have kept her at Qianlizhu.”

This Si Qinglan, always wanting to steal other people’s disciples, yet always failing.

But then again, if she had succeeded, the story would have been completely different.

Si Qinglan: “What are you smiling about?”

    Li Yu: “Nothing.”

    Si Qinglan: “I saw you!”

    Li Yu: “…Did you?”

Si Qinglan: “Of course! I wasn’t mistaken! Are you making fun of me?!”

    Li Yu: “No!”

Si Qinglan stared at Li Yu suspiciously for a long time, then asked softly, “How are your injuries?”

    Li Yu: “…”

Although she didn’t want to admit it, they weren’t healing well.

Si Qinglan: “I can’t hold them off much longer…”

Li Yu: “What do you mean?”

Si Qinglan: “They’re saying that this can’t go on forever. It’s been half a month. If you don’t address the situation, it will be seen as harboring a demon.”

    Li Yu: “Not surprising.”

She remembered that the original owner had hesitated about handing Mu Tao over.

But this hesitation couldn’t withstand the pressure from the other immortal sects, and after a period of delay, she had ultimately given in.

Si Qinglan: “They’ve decided to set up a demon-slaying formation on the Cloud Platform.”

    Li Yu: “Is that so…”

“I’ve told them countless times that Mu Tao is kind and innocent, just a child who doesn’t understand anything, that she has never done anything wrong, and as long as we reseal her Demon Bone, there won’t be any problems… But her Demon Bone is connected to the Heavenly Demon; no one dares take that risk.”

Si Qinglan frowned and asked, “Li Yu, what are you going to do?”

Li Yu: “If they all want her dead, will you save her?”

    Si Qinglan: “…”

    Li Yu: “I will.”

    Si Qinglan: “…”

Li Yu thought for a moment, then said firmly, “If it comes to that, please…don’t stop me.”

Si Qinglan: “If that day comes, at least let me…pretend to try and stop you…”

    Li Yu chuckled.

Si Qinglan lowered her gaze and muttered, “Sometimes I wonder if…bringing her here was a mistake…”

Li Yu: “Actually, I’m curious, how could someone like you bring her here?”

Si Qinglan suddenly stood up and walked to the window, looking at the falling snow.

After a long silence, she sighed softly. “I’d like to know the answer to that question myself…”

She said there were many things she didn’t understand, and this was just one of them.

Whenever she encountered something she couldn’t understand, she would simply put it aside, hoping the answer would come eventually.

She had never regretted anything before.

But this matter…its impact on Mount Chao Yao was too great.

    She did have some regrets.

  • Devilish Disciple [Transmigration] 51

Chapter 51: “Well, I’m Not Dead, Am I?”

【Congratulations to the host for completing the important “Demon Bone Awakens” plot point and successfully advancing the main storyline!】

【The system will now issue rewards—】

This garbage system, playing dead for so long, only acting at the last minute, clearly just to push the main storyline…

It hurt so much, her entire body ached. Another backlash from that unreliable system assistance.

She almost died, and all the system could offer was a “congratulations” and some paltry rewards.

All  tricks, all a scam, they didn’t care about her life at all!

    【Partial unlocking of advanced spells.】

    Ha, as expected…

Seriously, offering this as a reward, did it want her to work for it forever?

Just because it unlocked them, didn’t mean she could use them safely!

【The protagonist’s Heavenly Demon power has been unlocked!】

Even funnier, offering the protagonist’s power as her reward? She wasn’t that stupid…

    Wait…what did it just unlock?!

    Heavenly…Demon power?!

【The host’s current mission completion rate is 50%. The system restriction level remains at Medium. Keep up the good work!】

    What…what was going on?

    Li Yu looked down, surprised.

Mu Tao was still curled up in her arms, her small body trembling slightly.

Tears stained her face, but her breathing had calmed down.

Her grip loosened; she no longer clung desperately, just nestled against Li Yu, like a wounded puppy seeking comfort.

    Li Yu looked behind her.

Xiang Hanyu held Yan Buqiu’s hands, her teary eyes filled with a complex mix of emotions.

The bamboo forest was no longer shrouded in miasma, and the poison within Yan Buqiu was gone.

Xiang Hanyu had said that only the power of the Heavenly Demon could cleanse the poison.

So, the Demon Bone within Mu Tao was connected to the Heavenly Demon?

Was this not mentioned in the original story, or had she missed that detail…?

Why was she even thinking about this? It wasn’t important.

What was important was that she finally understood why the original “Li Yu” had treated the little protagonist the way she did.

When the last ancient god’s soul dissipated, he entrusted the Upper Spirit Lamp and the world-protecting artifact to her; she couldn’t refuse such a responsibility.

She and Si Qinglan were the ones who sealed Mu Tao’s Demon Bone.

Having participated in that ancient battle and guarded the Upper Spirit Lamp for over four thousand years, everyone else might not recognize the Heavenly Demon’s power, but she couldn’t mistake it.

Yet, she still relented and kept the child by her side.

Perhaps, during those two hundred years, she had been constantly tormented.

Her hope for Mu Tao to grow up safely must have been intertwined with the fear of her Demon Bone awakening, the fear of the Heavenly Demon Soul Seed within the Lamp resonating with it.

What had she been thinking when Mu Tao’s Demon Bone was finally exposed?

Had she hesitated, struggled with her decision, or felt a sense of relief?

Li Yu couldn’t guess the ancient god’s thoughts, just gently stroked the girl in her arms, ignoring the pain that wracked her body.

The world was silent, the only sound the soft whimpers of the girl in pain.

Seeing Mu Tao like this made Li Yu’s heart ache.

Her mind raced, unsure what to do, what they would face together in the future.

Mu Tao slowly opened her tear-filled eyes, fear and confusion lingering in their crimson depths.

She said that a strange power was coursing through her body, so unfamiliar, so cold.

She didn’t know what was happening; she just felt pain, exhaustion, and fear…

She was afraid of becoming a monster, afraid that her master would abandon her.

“That won’t happen. I’ll always be with you,” Li Yu said gently, wiping away her tears.

Her sleeve was stained with blood, like red plum blossoms falling on white snow.

Mu Tao stared at the bloodstains, then looked down at her own blood-covered hands.

Ever since she could remember, everyone had called her useless, a freak.

How could there be a blood-red wolf?

Her cultivation was far weaker than others; she couldn’t even use the most basic spells that others learned in days.

Her master took her in but refused to teach her anything.

And when she finally started teaching her, even the cultivation manual was different from what other disciples used.

She hadn’t questioned it before, but now she finally understood.

    She…

    …truly was a monster.

Her master knew, had always known.

That’s why her master hadn’t been surprised by her sensitivity to the Heavenly Demon Soul Seed.

The power that truly belonged to her had been sealed within her all along.

She had been deceived all these years.

    She should be heartbroken, terrified.

But she just cried loudly, burying her face in Li Yu’s arms.

So what if she was a monster, so what if she had been deceived?

Her master was still here, hadn’t abandoned her, even after being injured.

That was enough; she had nothing to fear anymore.

    【Protagonist Blackening Value +5%!】

    【Current Protagonist Blackening Value: 55%!】

Li Yu didn’t know why it increased, just as she didn’t know why the usually quiet Mu Tao was crying so loudly.

But she knew that Mu Tao was sensitive, her thoughts far more complex than she let on.

She only needed a small hint, and Mu Tao would understand.

Such a clever girl couldn’t possibly not understand what had just happened.

    What was she thinking now?

Was she heartbroken by the deception, or afraid of the future?

Li Yu waited anxiously for Mu Tao to speak.

The wait felt both short and long.

She felt a coldness seeping through her robes, chilling her skin, almost reaching her heart.

Finally, she heard Mu Tao’s soft, weak voice.

    “I’m sorry, Master…”

“It’s not your fault,” Li Yu replied, frowning slightly.

    Why was Mu Tao apologizing?

She hadn’t done anything wrong, didn’t even know anything, and was even injured because of it. What was she apologizing for?

    “I hurt Master…”

Li Yu felt a pang of sympathy.

She pursed her lips and whispered, “It’s fine, it doesn’t hurt.”

Mu Tao: “Will I…cause trouble for Master?”

    Li Yu: “…”

Li Yu didn’t know how to answer.

The Demon Bone, stimulated by the Heavenly Demon Soul Seed, had caused a massive phenomenon that surely alerted the hidden immortal sects in the human realm.

With her remaining power, she could suppress the demonic energy but couldn’t reseal the Demon Bone.

She couldn’t do much more than the male protagonist in the original story.

Just like in the novel, the immortal sects would soon send people to search for the Demon Bone.

It would be a huge problem, but she would make a different choice than the original owner.

This time, it wasn’t just about her own survival but about protecting the little protagonist, who was innocent and undeserving of her fate.

“Don’t be afraid.” She gently cupped Mu Tao’s tear-stained face, a faint smile appearing on her lips. “No matter what happens, I’ll take care of it.”

    【Protagonist Blackening Value +5%!】

    【Current Protagonist Blackening Value: 60%!】

    Li Yu: “…”

    She didn’t understand.

But since it was incomprehensible, she’d put it aside for now.

Many things that couldn’t be understood would eventually become clear, or simply cease to matter.

The priority now was to figure out what to do next.

That commotion must have alerted everyone.

With the Mirror Talisman destroyed, the black-robed figure must have realized what happened; he might even be on his way here.

With her limited strength, she wouldn’t stand a chance against him in a direct confrontation.

And there was still one unfinished matter…

Li Yu looked towards the two figures in the bamboo courtyard.

As she turned, she met Xiang Hanyu’s gaze.

Xiang Hanyu didn’t look away, her red-rimmed eyes filled with complex emotions.

She seemed to want to say something but hesitated.

The Upper Spirit Lamp was in Li Yu’s possession, and the scattered birds returned to their perches, watching them.

Xiang Hanyu could see the terrifying power sealed within Mu Tao.

And she had inadvertently unleashed it.

The black-robed figure had said that only the power of the Heavenly Demon could save Yan Buqiu.

Now, the seal on the Lamp wasn’t broken, but the poison within Yan Buqiu was gone.

Looking back, it wasn’t difficult to guess the connection between Mu Tao’s sealed power and the Heavenly Demon.

Yan Buqiu was right; she had underestimated the situation.

Not only could she not control the Heavenly Demon Soul Seed, but she didn’t even know how to handle this situation.

She had almost caused a disaster.

Yan Buqiu still needed immortal energy to rebuild her spiritual root, and the black-robed figure wouldn’t help her anymore. But how could she ask the person she had deceived for help?

Mu Tao’s seal was broken; after such a commotion, it was impossible to hide it. She didn’t know what they would face in the future.

And it was all her fault…

She had to ask for help, but she couldn’t bring herself to speak.

As the snow silently fell, the three, each lost in their own thoughts, stared at each other.

Mu Tao, her eyes red, looked at Li Yu.

She seemed to see, in those deep blue eyes, what her master was thinking.

She sat up straight, trying to be strong despite her weakness.

Li Yu, ignoring the discomfort in her chest, stood up and walked towards Yan Buqiu.

Xiang Hanyu’s gaze followed her, her mouth opening and closing several times, then she lowered her eyes.

As Li Yu passed by, she raised her hand, a faint light flickering, drawing the Upper Spirit Lamp towards her.

She put the Lamp into her spatial pouch.

She stood before Yan Buqiu, looking down at her pale face, and sighed softly.

Did she have the strength to save her? she asked the system silently.

【In your current state, Host, using another spell isn’t recommended.】

【However, if you reactivate the formation and use the power of the demons, it might be possible.】

Were they characters from the original story?

    【Yes.】

Their original ending wasn’t good, was it?

【Although the awakening of the Demon Bone cleansed the poison from Yan Buqiu’s body, the male protagonist in the original story couldn’t repair her spiritual root. The Heavenly Demon could revive at any time, and Li Yu wouldn’t expend her energy on such a minor matter.】

So, if she saved Yan Buqiu now, it might cause unforeseen changes to the storyline, right?

    【That is correct.】

Li Yu was silent for a long time, then made up her mind.

It didn’t matter; things had already deviated from the original story. She might as well follow her heart.

She didn’t have much strength left anyway; if she encountered the black-robed figure, this additional expenditure wouldn’t make much difference.

Ignoring the tightness in her chest, she sighed softly. “Xiang Hanyu, I’m not saving her because of our agreement.”

Xiang Hanyu didn’t respond, her eyes downcast.

“You helped me break the formation in the City of the Undying, but you also manipulated me.” Li Yu said calmly. “Using me is one thing, but you injured my disciple; that cannot be forgiven.”

    “I…”

“Remember this, I’m saving her only because I believe she doesn’t deserve such a fate.”

Tears shimmered in Xiang Hanyu’s eyes as she knelt down and kowtowed three times.

“I’m willing to serve you for the rest of my life, Exalted God. These are not empty words!” Her voice was filled with unwavering conviction.

“If you truly feel remorse, then never forget what you did to my disciple today.” Li Yu said, conjuring a faint light at her fingertip, then closed her eyes, exhausted.

If Xiang Hanyu remembered this favor, it might be helpful for Mu Tao’s difficult future.

“You can continue with your formation,” Li Yu said, the light from her fingertip flowing into Yan Buqiu’s forehead.

Xiang Hanyu stood up and looked at the birds in the forest.

The formation beneath their feet glowed again, and the birds flew towards it, their demonic energy converging, drawing the blue light into the center, gradually forming a pure white bamboo stalk.

The bird demons happily circled it, the snowflakes seemingly dancing along with them.

More and more spirits gathered outside the courtyard, watching from afar, tears in their eyes.

As the formation dissipated, Li Yu felt her strength leaving her, her breath coming in ragged gasps.

She tried to walk towards Mu Tao, but everything blurred.

This awful feeling, just like when she fainted in the City of the Undying.

    Or perhaps…even worse…

Fainting at a time like this, wouldn’t she be killed by the black-robed figure in her sleep?

Thinking this, she instinctively conjured a spiritual butterfly and saw Mu Tao running towards her anxiously.

The little girl seemed to be shouting something, but she couldn’t hear.

Her consciousness faded, the last vestiges of light and shadow disappearing.

When she woke up, she was lying in bed, unsure where she was.

Her head felt heavy, her eyelids heavy.

A weight pressed against her chest, making her dread facing the new day.

    But face it she must.

It was her job, after all.

The immortal sects were searching for the Demon Bone, and the black-robed figure might appear at any moment; she shouldn’t have fainted then.

Mu Tao hadn’t learned how to control her power yet; leaving her alone was too dangerous.

Li Yu sighed and forced her eyes open.

She saw snow-laden branches outside the window.

Snow was still falling, silently blanketing the flowers.

The scene was unfamiliar, but after a moment, she realized that only Si Qinglan would grow so many out-of-season flowers in winter.

This was Qianlizhu; they were back on Mount Chao Yao.

Li Yu stared at the snow and flowers outside, her mind still foggy.

How long had she been unconscious? How did they get back?

Had the immortal sects found them?

Had the black-robed figure appeared while she was unconscious?

    No, those weren’t important.

What mattered was Mu Tao and the Upper Spirit Lamp.

She tried to sit up, but her body was weak, every movement sending jolts of pain through her.

Si Qinglan, sensing her movement, appeared like a wisp of smoke.

Before Li Yu could react, a green light enveloped her, solidifying into the familiar figure. With a gentle push, Si Qinglan made her lie back down.

Si Qinglan: “Just lie down and rest, please!”

Li Yu wondered if she had a fever.

Si Qinglan’s tone was sharp, almost annoyed, but seeing her calmed Li Yu down.

Si Qinglan’s presence was reassuring, so reassuring that she almost wanted to call her “Mom.”

But if she did, her compatibility would probably drop to zero, resulting in instant erasure by the system.

Thinking this, Li Yu couldn’t help but chuckle.

The laughter sent jolts of pain through her body, almost making her faint again.

“What are you laughing about?” Si Qinglan frowned, sitting down on the edge of the bed.

“I just thought…” Li Yu paused, her voice weak, “…that sounds familiar, like something I just said to you yesterday.”

    How ironic.

Before leaving Mount Chao Yao, she had thought Si Qinglan was too weak and had to handle everything herself.

But after a single trip, she was the one bedridden.

Now, Si Qinglan seemed like the stronger one.

“Yesterday? Look how long you’ve been unconscious!” Si Qinglan scolded her. “You told me not to worry before you left. I shouldn’t have trusted you! I asked you to retrieve the Upper Spirit Lamp, and you come back like this? I nearly had a heart attack when I received your message!”

“Well, I’m not dead, am I?”

“Not dead yet? What do you consider ‘something happening’ then?!”

    “…”

“Why are you always so nonchalant?” Si Qinglan frowned. “Some things…I thought you understood!”

    “…”

“Mu Tao told me everything!” Si Qinglan continued scolding her. “Are you in any condition to be running around? The Upper Spirit Lamp was stolen, you were still injured, and you decided to save some random stranger! If you hadn’t gotten lucky and retrieved the Lamp, do you know how serious the consequences would have been?!”

    “I got the Lamp back, didn’t I…?”

“What if that bird demon didn’t have the Lamp? What if she was just trying to drain your spiritual energy? What if she was working with the black-robed figure, using you to break the seal?” Si Qinglan’s anger gradually turned into fear. “Li Yu, even if you couldn’t retrieve the Lamp, you shouldn’t risk your life like that!”

Si Qinglan: “The old you would never have been so reckless…”

Li Yu: “Do you think the old me was better?”

“…At least you acted like a normal person.” Si Qinglan pouted. “If it weren’t for Mount Chao Yao needing you, I wouldn’t care whether you lived or died.”

    Li Yu was momentarily speechless.

This nagging did sound like a caring elder; it almost moved her.

She hadn’t expected Si Qinglan to care so much…

She had thought Si Qinglan was disappointed in her.

After a moment of silence, she asked, changing the subject, “You brought us back?”

    Si Qinglan: “Obviously!”

Li Yu: “Did you encounter the black-robed figure?”

“No!” Si Qinglan seemed annoyed by the question. “Just a bird and a bamboo.”

Didn’t the black-robed figure want the Upper Spirit Lamp?

Why didn’t he seize this opportunity?

Was he wary of something, or was he simply too far away?

Li Yu felt dizzy; her thoughts were muddled.

Just then, Si Qinglan’s continuous chatter interrupted her.

“After you left, I thought about it for a long time. So what if the Upper Spirit Lamp is lost, so what if the other immortal sects blame us? The Heavenly Demon is a matter for all the Three Realms. We, Mount Chao Yao, have guarded it for over four thousand years, and no one has ever helped us…” Si Qinglan sighed. “We’ve done our best. Sometimes, there are things we can’t do, no need to force ourselves. Blame and punishment are better than losing our lives.”

“Even ancient gods struggled against the Heavenly Demon, why push yourself so hard?” Si Qinglan continued, her voice filled with frustration. “If those people who only care about blaming us want to come, then let them! We’ll just hand over this burden and let them figure out how to guard that damn Lamp!”

Li Yu listened, her mind reeling, unsure whether Si Qinglan was being serious or just venting.

After ranting for a while, Si Qinglan lowered her gaze and conjured a faint light at her fingertip.

The light gently entered Li Yu’s forehead, and she felt the discomfort lessen slightly, her breathing becoming easier.

She reached out and swatted Si Qinglan’s hand away.

“Don’t waste your energy healing me, you’re not in much better shape yourself.”

“Hmph.” Si Qinglan rolled her eyes. “If you don’t want it, I’m not offering.”

Li Yu sighed and asked, “Where’s Mu Tao?”

    Si Qinglan: “…”

    Li Yu: “Well?”

    Si Qinglan: “Locked up.”

    Li Yu: “Locked up where?!”

Si Qinglan: “The Spirit Restraint Hall, guarded by outsiders.”

    Li Yu: “…”

Chapter 50: The Power of the Heavenly Demon

The lotus lamp, carrying a sliver of moonlight, gently floated towards the center of the formation.

Li Yu stared, disbelief swirling in her eyes.

    —The Upper Spirit Lamp!

    How could it be here?!

Mu Tao had pointed in a different direction. If the Lamp had been on Xiang Hanyu all along, why hadn’t Mu Tao sensed it?!

    Li Yu’s mind went blank.

    Then, she was jolted awake.

She could feel her spiritual energy rapidly draining.

The formation beneath her feet was absorbing her power!

But the stolen energy wasn’t flowing into Yan Buqiu; it was being drawn towards the Upper Spirit Lamp.

And Xiang Hanyu, hovering behind the Lamp, was controlling the formation, aided by the demonic energy of the surrounding birds.

Black mist swirled around her, and the blue light of the formation illuminated the snowy night.

Why was Xiang Hanyu doing this?

Was the entire story a lie, and she was the black-robed figure?

No, that was impossible, Yan Buqiu was right here!

This courtyard, this forest, the circling bird demons, they were all real.

Xiang Hanyu’s story wasn’t a lie; her motive was.

What was she trying to do? Help the black-robed figure break the seal on the Upper Spirit Lamp in exchange for his assistance?

Why did she have to rely on him? Was there something only he could do?

Li Yu could also provide spiritual energy!

Xiang Hanyu knew that Yan Buqiu wouldn’t want this, so why…

    What did she truly want?

“Xiang Hanyu! What are you doing?!” Li Yu shouted. “What can that black-robed figure give you that I can’t?!”

“You’re right,” Xiang Hanyu said, a bitter smile on her face.

    “…”

“Her spiritual root is damaged. If it’s not repaired, she will die when her spiritual energy is depleted.” Xiang Hanyu’s eyes were filled with unwavering determination. “And the poison within her, a curse backlash, has fused with her soul…”

    “…”

“Immortal energy won’t save her; it will only clash with the poison, causing her even more pain.” Xiang Hanyu looked at the Upper Spirit Lamp. “In this world, only the power of the Heavenly Demon can save her.”

She said that the power of the Heavenly Demon could absorb all resentment and evil.

As long as the Heavenly Demon Soul Seed was awakened, Yan Buqiu could be freed from the Jie Gou’s curse.

She had to do this; she had no other choice.

Only after the poison was removed could she use immortal energy to reconstruct Yan Buqiu’s spiritual root!

Xiang Hanyu looked at Yan Buqiu and whispered an apology.

    “I’m sorry,” she said.

She truly had no other choice.

She had made the best possible decision…

    Li Yu finally understood.

The past was real, and so was the desire to save Yan Buqiu.

After obtaining the Upper Spirit Lamp, Xiang Hanyu must have hidden it and created a false aura elsewhere.

She had not only deceived Mu Tao’s senses but also the black-robed figure who had instructed her to steal the Lamp.

She had planned this all along, using Yan Buqiu as the core of a formation that could trap and drain the spiritual energy of anyone who entered.

Xiang Hanyu didn’t want a little bit of spiritual energy to prolong Yan Buqiu’s life.

She wanted enough power to break the seal on the Upper Spirit Lamp.

What she truly desired was the Heavenly Demon Soul Seed.

“Xiang Hanyu!” Mu Tao, still restrained, looked at Xiang Hanyu, her eyes filled with anxiety and pleading. “My Master sincerely wanted to help you! You can’t do this to her!”

“I don’t intend to harm the Exalted God,” Xiang Hanyu said loudly. “Please believe me. I only need a moment, just a moment.”

She said that once the seal was broken, she only needed a moment to use the Heavenly Demon’s power to cleanse the Jie Gou’s poison.

After that, she would do everything in her power to help Li Yu reseal the Lamp.

She wouldn’t let the Heavenly Demon Soul Seed escape, nor would she let the black-robed figure obtain its power.

She knew Yan Buqiu wouldn’t want to see the human realm ravaged by the Heavenly Demon.

So, she only needed a moment, just a moment…

Li Yu shouted angrily, “Are you crazy?! That’s not a power you can control!”

She hadn’t expected Xiang Hanyu to go this far.

“I can control it,” Xiang Hanyu said firmly. “Even if I can’t, I’ve made preparations…I won’t, I can’t destroy everything she worked so hard to protect…”

“Don’t be impulsive! We can find another way!” Li Yu was frantic but couldn’t move.

    System, System, do something!

The seal on the Upper Spirit Lamp couldn’t be broken!

In the original story, the Lamp remained sealed until the end. How could it be broken here?

The most powerful demon in the world was sealed inside; if it was released, everything would be chaos!

“I know, no matter what I say, you won’t believe me…so I had no other choice.”

As Xiang Hanyu spoke, her vision blurred.

She was a Linchi bird, a master of disguise. [T/N: 林鸱鸟 (Linchi bird) or Frogmouth, a type of bird known for its camouflage.]

She had always been good at deception, deceiving her own heart in the past, now deceiving someone who genuinely wanted to help her.

Her lies were always a mix of truth and falsehood, deceiving others, sometimes deceiving herself.

If only immortal energy could save Yan Buqiu, she wouldn’t have to lie to anyone.

The black-robed figure had given Yan Buqiu a bit of his spiritual energy. That’s how she learned that Yan Buqiu’s body could no longer handle immortal or divine energy.

He had promised that if she stole the Upper Spirit Lamp for him, he would use the power of the Heavenly Demon to cleanse the poison.

And after the poison was gone, he would reconstruct her spiritual root.

The black-robed figure hadn’t broken his promise; she was the one breaking hers.

She helped him create the formation; she saw the human cultivators die before it.

He gathered evil demons in the City of the Undying, promising them freedom and power after the Heavenly Demon’s revival.

They roared and cursed, their eyes filled with resentment and rage.

Demons, though powerful, were always hated and ostracized.

Why should immortals and gods reign supreme? And why should those frail, short-lived humans be protected by them?

The black-robed figure sat silently on the altar, an immeasurable loneliness within that vast, starry sky.

He slowly stood up, and the noisy demons fell silent.

In the silence, he said calmly, “The Upper Spirit Lamp is sealed within Mount Chao Yao.”

    His voice was emotionless.

He said that normally, a direct assault would be impossible, but Mount Chao Yao was no longer at its peak.

Cangming Revered One, Li Yu, was still recovering from her injuries; Qingxuan Revered One, Si Qinglan, was never a threat; and Lingyao Revered One, Weisheng Xuanzhu, was nearing his hibernation. Once he was asleep, they could easily conquer Mount Chao Yao and obtain the ancient treasure—the Upper Spirit Lamp.

Then, the Heavenly Demon would be revived, and the order of the Three Realms would crumble.

Demons would finally regain their long-lost freedom.

The demons cheered upon hearing his words.

Beneath the sea of resentment, they drank the wine stolen from the human realm, dreaming of a future of freedom under the Heavenly Demon’s rule.

These evil demons desired a world without rules, without restraints.

As long as their fists were strong enough, they could take anything they wanted, without fear, without consequence.

The black-robed figure promised them such a world, but would it truly satisfy them?

When there were no rules, when power was unchecked, wouldn’t they, who preyed on the weak, also become prey for the strong?

The black-robed figure didn’t care about the demons’ fate; he clearly had other motives.

She didn’t know what he truly wanted, but she sensed that if he obtained the Heavenly Demon Soul Seed, he would destroy the human realm.

That wasn’t what Yan Buqiu would want.

But she had no other choice.

Only the power of the Heavenly Demon could remove the poison from Yan Buqiu.

Yan Buqiu had already achieved immortality; her damaged spiritual root could only be repaired with immortal or divine energy, something she, a demon, couldn’t provide.

But was there truly no other way?

Before going to Mount Chao Yao, looking at the blood-red sea of resentment, she had thought long and hard.

She came up with a plan, a risky plan, but better than being manipulated by the black-robed figure.

She hid and, using her memories of the human realm, created a pair of Mirror Talismans with a forbidden technique.

She would embed the “real” talisman within herself and give the “mirror” talisman to her clan, instructing them to take it far away.

This way, her aura would be diverted, leading the black-robed figure on a wild goose chase.

She secretly returned to Lingzhou while the black-robed figure was away, put Yan Buqiu into a deep sleep with a spell, and set up this formation that could trap immortals and gods, draining their spiritual energy.

She followed the black-robed figure’s instructions, went to Mount Chao Yao with her clan, and, using his power, stole the Upper Spirit Lamp.

    Before leaving, she gambled.

She gambled that the injured Exalted God would follow and that she could convince her to come to Lingzhou.

She didn’t go to the designated meeting place, didn’t join the attacking demons, and didn’t give the Upper Spirit Lamp to the black-robed figure.

She betrayed him, or rather, she had never intended to follow him.

He would surely follow her diverted aura, searching for her in some unknown place.

Her clan would do their best to hide, but with his power, she didn’t have much time.

She had to bring Li Yu to Lingzhou, into this prepared trap, as quickly as possible.

As long as Yan Buqiu was at the core of the formation, Li Yu, while transferring her spiritual energy, would unknowingly activate it.

Then, she could use the Exalted God’s power to break the seal on the Upper Spirit Lamp, borrow a sliver of the Heavenly Demon’s power, and cleanse the poison from Yan Buqiu’s body.

If everything went smoothly, she could even use the formation’s power to repair Yan Buqiu’s damaged spiritual root.

She had told Yan Buqiu about this plan before going to Mount Chao Yao.

But Yan Buqiu just grabbed her hand and shook her head, telling her not to do it.

“You don’t understand what the Heavenly Demon is. Even ancient gods struggled against it. Even a moment’s contact could corrupt your mind completely.” A deep worry appeared in Yan Buqiu’s usually dim eyes. “This is too dangerous, you can’t control it, you won’t be able to withstand it…”

“I won’t be corrupted! I just want to save you, please believe me!”

    “Don’t do this…”

“Just a moment, just a moment. After I save you, I’ll release her!” She pleaded with Yan Buqiu. “I’ll help her reseal the Lamp, I’ll help her return it to Mount Chao Yao… Believe me, I can control it, I can withstand it, I can, I can save you…”

She swore to Yan Buqiu that the worst wouldn’t happen.

The Heavenly Demon Soul Seed wasn’t a physical entity, just a soul fragment. When the seal was broken, she would contain it within her own body.

If she lost control, the other Linchi bird demons would immediately abandon her and transform the formation from a spirit-trapping formation into a demon-destroying one.

Then, as long as the Exalted God used the formation’s power to destroy her body, the birds would help reseal the Heavenly Demon Soul Seed.

    “Hanyu, it’s not worth it…”

She knew Yan Buqiu would say this, but she had already made up her mind.

She choked back tears and said, “You don’t get to decide whether it’s worth it or not.”

“If you truly care about me, then let me go…”

    “…”

“You can live without me. Weren’t you happy during those years when we were apart?”

    “…”

“Hanyu, you said that no matter where you went, you always thought of me… Doesn’t that mean… I’m always with you, in your heart…”

    “…”

“You care about me, and so do I…I don’t want to leave you…” Yan Buqiu whispered, a tear rolling down her cheek. “I promise you, I won’t go far… Let’s make a promise… If you’re willing, from now on, the wind in this forest, the snow in the sky, whenever they touch you, it will be me, reaching out to you…”

This promise wasn’t good at all.

Yan Buqiu was so annoying, always treating her like a child.

She must have been crying uncontrollably then.

So, Yan Buqiu reached out, wanting to wipe away her tears.

But she just grabbed Yan Buqiu’s wrist and used a spell to make her fall asleep.

As the snow silently fell, the frail woman closed her eyes.

    She knew this was dangerous.

    But she had to try.

Even if it meant destruction, she had to try.

Because this was the only way to save Yan Buqiu.

This forest, without her, wouldn’t change.

But without Yan Buqiu, it wouldn’t be the same.

Thinking this, a bitter smile appeared on Xiang Hanyu’s face.

Within the formation, streams of blue spiritual energy assaulted the seal on the Upper Spirit Lamp.

The eternal blue flame flickered, turning crimson.

She saw the Exalted God’s serious expression and heard the little girl’s anxious cries from outside the formation.

Almost there, just a little more, and she could break the seal.

Xiang Hanyu gritted her teeth, pushing her demonic energy to its limit.

The Mirror Talisman, unable to withstand the surge of power, disintegrated into ashes.

The power of the Heavenly Demon, about to burst forth from the Upper Spirit Lamp, filled the world.

    Everything seemed to tremble.

Suddenly, a cracking sound, carried by the wind, reached her ears.

The seal on the Upper Spirit Lamp wasn’t broken, but the eternal flame on its wick had turned completely blood red.

The cracking sound came from outside the formation, from the girl bound by the black mist.

    Xiang Hanyu’s wings faltered.

As she looked at Mu Tao, the tension in Li Yu’s heart snapped.

The scene from the original story, the protagonist’s Demon Bone awakening, causing a phenomenon…

    Was it happening here?

The cracking sound echoed in her heart.

The Upper Spirit Lamp’s strange behavior was affecting the Demon Bone, dormant within its seal for so long.

The flickering flames seemed to burn the little girl’s body.

The black mist binding Mu Tao was suddenly devoured by an invisible force, vanishing without a trace.

The little girl, who had been crying and screaming, her eyes filled with anxiety, now looked terrified and in pain.

    “Master…”

The moment the seal on the Demon Bone shattered, a terrifying power surged through her previously blocked meridians.

She had never felt such raw power coursing through her body.

It felt like countless claws tearing at her flesh.

The pain was excruciating, making it hard to breathe.

She didn’t know what was happening, her legs giving way as she stumbled towards the formation and collapsed.

    “I…I hurt…”

Mu Tao reached out towards the trapped figure within the formation, but her hand couldn’t reach her master.

    Her eyes gradually turned crimson.

Even the miasma in the forest seemed to be drawn towards her.

Resentment flowed towards her from the distant horizon, like threads of red.

The scattered stars and the faint moonlight were swallowed by the approaching darkness.

Threads of crimson, like streams finding their way back to their source, flowed into the suffering girl’s body.

The streams turned into a torrent.

More and more resentment surged from afar, enveloping the entire forest.

Xiang Hanyu froze, shock in her widened eyes.

“Xiang Hanyu! Stop!!” Li Yu shouted, her heart pounding. “You can’t break the seal on the Upper Spirit Lamp! You’ve underestimated its power!!”

    “I…”

“You can’t control this! The consequences will be disastrous! Mu Tao can’t control this power! If you don’t let me suppress her demonic energy, everything will be out of control!!”

    “…”

“Do you think she won’t have to bear the consequences of your actions?!” Li Yu gritted her teeth, and seeing Xiang Hanyu’s hesitation, said coldly, “If the Heavenly Demon is revived, we will all be held accountable, no one can escape the blame.”

She looked down at Yan Buqiu and sneered. “Let her wake up and see what you’ve done.”

The resentment in the sky had formed a vast sea.

Lightning flashed and thunder rumbled within the sea of resentment, illuminating the turbulent night sky.

Blood-red lightning, like writhing dragons, roared and threatened to tear the world apart.

This phenomenon was powerful enough to alert the entire Three Realms.

The surging resentment flowed towards the small, writhing figure on the ground.

The shock in Xiang Hanyu’s eyes turned into a dull, empty stare.

The birds stopped circling, and she deactivated the formation.

Finally able to move, Li Yu rushed to Mu Tao’s side.

The blue spiritual light, no longer bound by the formation, dissipated like scattered stars.

As she helped Mu Tao up, a terrifying power surged into her, enveloping her, almost stopping her heart, stealing her breath.

Mu Tao, thrashing, grabbed her arm, her sharp, almost bestial claws, carrying dark red resentment, piercing through Li Yu’s protective spiritual energy, tearing her clothes, sinking into her flesh.

    The pain jolted her awake.

    System, help!

She didn’t wait for a response, just raised her right hand with great effort.

A barrier, seemingly capable of dividing the world, erupted around them, enveloping the resentment-filled forest.

The next second, a deep blue light, like the depths of the sea, glowed from her fingertip, piercing through the thick resentment, its brilliance almost blinding.

Suddenly, the blood-red sea of resentment, the lightning and thunder, the swirling bamboo leaves and snowflakes, along with the dispersing blue light, began to spin rapidly.

The birds scattered, fleeing in terror. Xiang Hanyu landed, using her remaining energy to create a small barrier around Yan Buqiu.

She saw a wisp of dark green poison slowly being extracted from Yan Buqiu’s body.

It floated towards the blue light—not just the poison, but everything swirling in the air seemed to be drawn towards the light, converging, collapsing…

Finally, it transformed into a faint spark,

And gently entered Mu Tao’s forehead.

The pain subsided, and Mu Tao stopped struggling.

“It’s alright now, don’t be afraid…” Li Yu pulled her into her arms and whispered comforting words.

As silence returned, the miasma in the forest dissipated.

The flame on the Upper Spirit Lamp’s wick turned blue again.

The setting moon cast its light on the falling snow.

The world was silent, as if nothing had happened.

Chapter 49: “I Have No Other Choice”

The small grayish-brown bird flapped its wings, leading the way towards Lingzhou.

They flew away from the blood-red sea of resentment and saw the last rays of the setting sun.

A crimson sky before them, boundless resentment behind.

    This eerie world unsettled them.

As night fell, a bright moon rose in the sky.

Bathed in moonlight, the world was a gentle blue.

The small bird, light as the wind, seemed to chase the rising moon.

Leaving the City of the Undying, they flew eastward, carried by the moonlight, crossing mountains and rivers. As the moon reached its zenith, they saw a vast mountain range in the distance.

That was Lingzhou, Xiang Hanyu said.

It wasn’t too far from the City of the Undying, about two or three hours’ flight at their speed.

Li Yu still harbored suspicion as Xiang Hanyu led the way.

    Was Yan Buqiu truly dying?

Was this bird demon’s eagerness to bring them here a ploy to buy time for the black-robed figure?

Or was Lingzhou itself a trap, and the bird demon was leading them into it?

Could the Upper Spirit Lamp and the black-robed figure be in Lingzhou?

The more she thought about it, the more suspicious she became. She turned to Mu Tao and whispered, asking about the location of the Upper Spirit Lamp.

Her voice was so low that only Mu Tao could hear.

The night was dark, the moonlight faint; she didn’t see the momentary flicker of confusion in Mu Tao’s eyes, nor the blush that crept up her ears.

Mu Tao quickly suppressed her inappropriate thoughts, lowered her gaze, and focused on the pull of the Heavenly Demon Soul Seed.

Perhaps because of the distance, the pull was faint, making it difficult to pinpoint the Lamp’s exact location.

After trying for a while, Mu Tao pointed in a direction, uncertainty in her eyes.

“Master, that pulling sensation…isn’t as clear as before,” she whispered, a hint of guilt in her voice.

Li Yu stroked her hair. “Perhaps we’re too far away, it’s fine.”

Mu Tao nodded, her hands fidgeting in her lap.

Her master had turned away again, her long, dark hair falling around Mu Tao’s knees.

She unconsciously picked up strand after strand, twirling them around her fingers.

Snow fell, brushing against the spiritual barrier, unable to touch them.

Below were scattered, flickering lights from towns and villages.

Houses, their roofs covered in snow, looked peaceful, untouched by suffering.

A mountain shrouded in a faint miasma loomed in the distance.

They flew towards the mountain, entering a bamboo forest.

Snowflakes fell through the misty miasma, landing on the tall silver bamboo stalks, the moonlight making everything seem hazy and unreal.

There was a bamboo house in the forest. The bird, having hurried back, landed anxiously.

Brown feathers and black mist swirled around it, then dissipated, revealing the bird in human form, lifting her skirt as she ran up the stone steps and into the house.

Li Yu, watching this, relaxed slightly.

This place was peaceful, with bamboo, moonlight, wind, and snow.

If the miasma was dispelled, it would be a beautiful place.

She exchanged glances with Mu Tao and was about to approach the house when Xiang Hanyu emerged, pushing a wooden wheelchair.

A woman in white sat in the wheelchair, her head tilted slightly, her eyes closed, her breathing slow and even, as if in a deep sleep.

She looked gentle, her silver hair, like Xiang Hanyu’s, tied back with a simple bamboo twig, a few strands falling around her shoulders.

Her spiritual energy was incredibly weak, almost undetectable without using spiritual awareness, barely hinting at her past as a spirit, or rather, a terrestrial immortal.

Xiang Hanyu whispered something in her ear, her voice barely audible, as if afraid to wake her.

Li Yu couldn’t hear what she said, and Yan Buqiu, so close, didn’t seem to hear either, showing no reaction.

The cold night wind blew, but she didn’t shiver or open her eyes.

She was incredibly pale, as pale as snow.

Or rather, as pale as someone devoid of color, lacking vitality.

Xiang Hanyu had been right; she was dying.

There was a small ramp beside the stone steps for the wheelchair. Xiang Hanyu pushed the woman down the ramp, snowflakes falling on them.

She didn’t use any spiritual energy for protection, just pushed Yan Buqiu to the center of the courtyard, then crouched down before her, hugging her knees.

She looked up at the unconscious woman, gently taking her cold hands, tears welling up in her eyes.

“Buqiu, I can save you now,” Xiang Hanyu whispered. “Although I did some things that might anger you, I knew what I was doing, and so did everyone else…”

“I don’t know if you can hear me, but no matter what, I will save you.” She pressed Yan Buqiu’s cold hand against her cheek. “Trust me, your spiritual root will be healed soon, and when you recover, you can scold me all you want…”

Li Yu approached and said softly, “The barrier in the City of the Undying would have fallen eventually, with or without your help. You and your clan, as long as the Upper Spirit Lamp is safely returned, haven’t committed an unforgivable sin.”

Xiang Hanyu nodded slightly, her eyes downcast, her long eyelashes fluttering, still holding Yan Buqiu’s hands.

“What do I need to do?” Li Yu couldn’t help but ask. “Just transfer my spiritual energy to her?”

Xiang Hanyu looked up at Yan Buqiu, her tear-filled eyes firm.

She stood up, placed her hands on the wheelchair’s armrests, leaned forward, and gently kissed Yan Buqiu’s forehead.

As she pulled away, a tear fell onto Yan Buqiu’s face, tracing a path down her cheek.

This sudden display of affection surprised Li Yu.

So they really were a couple!

With two other people right here, such intimacy, did they not see her as an outsider?

    Li Yu watched, stunned.

Xiang Hanyu took a few steps back, looking up at the moon through the falling snow and the faint miasma, a determined look on her face.

“Exalted God, the Jie Gou’s poison has seeped into Buqiu’s soul. Please protect yourself when transferring your spiritual energy.” She walked over to Mu Tao and pulled the confused girl’s arm. “Little sister, let’s go outside.”

“Why?” Mu Tao tilted her head, puzzled.

Xiang Hanyu: “The influx of spiritual energy will temporarily agitate the poison. Your cultivation is low, it’s safer to be further away.”

Mu Tao blinked and looked at Li Yu, confused.

    Li Yu: “Go with her.”

Mu Tao nodded obediently and followed Xiang Hanyu out of the courtyard.

She thought that was far enough, but Xiang Hanyu continued pulling her further away.

Behind them were tall silver bamboo stalks, their leaves heavy with snow, as if a gentle breeze could make them fall.

She seemed to hear Xiang Hanyu sigh softly.

Seeing them stop, Li Yu circulated her protective spiritual energy and gathered a soft blue light in her palm.

As she did, she quickly thought,

How much spiritual energy did she have? How much should she give Yan Buqiu? And how long would it last?

If retrieving the Upper Spirit Lamp proved difficult, or if Mu Tao’s identity was exposed because of the black-robed figure, the hidden immortal sects would surely hold Mount Chao Yao accountable.

Then she would have to stay by Mu Tao’s side and might not be able to return to fulfill her promise.

Perhaps she should give Yan Buqiu more, ensuring her survival for as long as possible without depleting herself too much.

“System, I want to give her as much spiritual energy as possible without weakening myself.” Li Yu asked inwardly. “But I’m not sure how much that is. Can you calculate it?”

【Certainly, leave it to the system!】

    Li Yu was relieved.

She looked down at the peacefully sleeping woman.

It wasn’t her imagination; there was a tearstain on Yan Buqiu’s cheek.

Before Li Yu could process this, she gently pressed her palm against Yan Buqiu’s forehead.

Spiritual energy flowed into Yan Buqiu’s body.

    Suddenly, lights flickered around them.

Beneath their feet, on the snow-covered ground.

The soft blue light, like a pebble dropped into a still pond, created ripples that spread outwards.

Before Li Yu could react, the lights rose from the ground, forming an unfamiliar formation.

She tried to pull away, but an invisible force held her hand in place.

No, not just her hand, her entire body was immobile.

The surrounding bamboo stalks shifted, forming another formation outside the first one.

Mu Tao gasped. “What have you done?!”

A sudden gust of wind drowned out her voice.

Snow fell from the bamboo leaves as countless bird demons, hidden among the trees, took flight, circling the formation.

Mu Tao tried to return to the courtyard but was blocked by an invisible barrier.

She grabbed Xiang Hanyu’s arm, her eyes red with anxiety. “Xiang Hanyu! What are you doing to my master?!”

“I’m sorry, I have no other choice,” Xiang Hanyu said in a low voice, her palms glowing with black mist as she restrained Mu Tao.

“Xiang Hanyu!” Mu Tao struggled. “Let go of my master! Let go of me!”

Xiang Hanyu looked at Mu Tao and said softly, “I don’t want to hurt anyone.”

As she spoke, her hands transformed into wings, and she flew up towards the formation.

Black mist swirled around her, and countless bird demons circled her, echoing the formation below.

All their demonic energy converged towards her.

Bamboo leaves and snowflakes danced in the moonlight within the formation.

Xiang Hanyu raised her wings, the black mist gathering before her.

As the mist dissipated, an icy blue lotus lamp appeared, held between her wings.

The lamp hovered in the air.

An eternal blue flame flickered on its wick.
