    Chapter 79: A Matter of Time p1

After Weisheng Xuanzhu left, Li Yu sat on the floor and pulled the little wolf into her arms.

The little creature, its tail drooping dejectedly, whimpered and snuggled against her.

“This is my fault; I forgot that things are different here, but it’s not that different, really,” she said, picking up a twig and patiently explaining the complex characters to the little wolf, breaking them down into simpler strokes.

Her voice was gentle and patient.

The little wolf blinked its large, sad eyes, staring at the characters in the snow, trying to understand.

As Li Yu taught, a thought suddenly occurred to her.

She tentatively wrote two characters in the snow.

The little wolf, its eyes filled with confusion, looked up at her, as if asking—why are you writing characters I’ve never seen before?

“This is ‘Li,’ from dawn,” Li Yu said, pointing the twig at the second character, “and this is ‘Yu,’ from lush and vibrant.”

The little wolf tilted its head, its confusion deepening.

“This is…” Li Yu hesitated, then chuckled softly, gently pressing the pads of the little wolf’s paws. “I’m teaching you two new characters, do you want to learn?”

The little wolf stared at the characters for a moment, then jumped down from her lap.

Its small, gray paws clumsily copied the characters in the snow.

Then, it hesitated, wrote “Li Yu” in the snow, and looked up at her, its eyes questioning.

Li Yu: “They sound the same, right?”

    The little wolf nodded.

Li Yu smiled faintly. “Many things in this world seem the same, but they’re actually different. Characters are the same, they might sound alike, but they can be written differently and have different meanings…”

“These two characters…they’re our secret. Just remember them, don’t write them for Xuanzhu to see,” she said, rubbing the little wolf’s ears. “Okay?”

The little wolf stared at the characters, then, after a moment of confusion, nodded and practiced writing them again.

Li Yu watched as her real name, clumsily written by those small paws, filled the ground, a strange feeling rising within her.

She knew that Mu Tao, four thousand years in the future, wouldn’t remember anything that happened in the North Sea.

The wind and snow here could easily erase everything.

The countless “whys” and the repeatedly written name would be swept away by the wind after a brief respite, leaving no trace.

The answer someone sought, probably also long gone, scattered by the endless wind and snow of this eternal night.

Perhaps that was why she could briefly be herself here.

    She liked it here.

Here, she was just…an injured person.

Even though her arrival was unexplained, her injuries unusual, her heart filled with secrets—no one questioned her presence or her motives.

She didn’t have to worry about character compatibility or any responsibilities.

The little wolf, understanding nothing, just wanted to be close to her.

Weisheng Xuanzhu didn’t seem to care, always focused on the present.

And Qing Nü, an ancient god nearing the end of her lifespan, the guardian of the Upper Spirit Lamp, hidden in this desolate place for over three thousand years, must also have secrets she couldn’t share.

Such a person wouldn’t pry into her affairs.

So, the North Sea four thousand years ago wasn’t so bad.

Even in this cold, eternal night, there was still the moon, a quiet, clean world—and even with their hidden burdens, no one was truly alone.

But these memories would soon belong only to her.

Li Yu thought this, then paused, lost in thought.

Perhaps she had made a mistake.

Wanting to maintain some semblance of cause and effect, she had given the little wolf the name Mu Tao.

But she had forgotten one thing: Weisheng Xuanzhu remembered everything.

She had initially assumed that the theft of the Upper Spirit Lamp was targeted at “Li Yu,” its guardian, and that Mu Tao’s Demon Bone was accidentally exposed in Lingzhou.

But now, she remembered more details.

If she brought the name Mu Tao back to the North Sea four thousand years ago, then Weisheng Xuanzhu, four thousand years in the future, couldn’t possibly be indifferent to Mu Tao’s appearance.

But the age didn’t match, the appearance didn’t match, and the Demon Bone and the seal within her drastically altered the little wolf’s aura.

Even if he suspected something, he wouldn’t have any proof that Mu Tao was the little wolf from the past.

But he might have never stopped suspecting.

Li Yu almost forgot, the first time they entered the City of the Undying, a force had knocked Mu Tao unconscious and placed her in the core of the summoning formation.

The little black bird couldn’t do that, and Qin Ruoheng, her consciousness scattered, wouldn’t have either.

It must have been Weisheng Xuanzhu.

He suspected that Mu Tao was the little wolf from his past, that his inability to recognize her was somehow related to the Heavenly Demon incident.

So, he threw Mu Tao into the heart of the resentment-filled formation.

Perhaps, from that moment on, he had already been certain about Mu Tao’s Demon Bone.

As for how the Demon Bone ended up in Mu Tao, and why it appeared on Mount Chao Yao four thousand years after the Heavenly Demon’s death, that was the truth he sought.

After destroying the Heavenly Gate, Weisheng Xuanzhu had also mentioned Mu Tao.

He felt deceived, he found it ironic.

He had found so many clues suggesting a hidden truth.

Yet, the person most likely to know the truth, the one who had even secretly raised the little wolf with the Demon Bone, refused to tell him.

No wonder he resorted to such drastic measures to revive the Heavenly Demon.

There were too many unanswered questions, enough to become an obsession…

Li Yu wondered, what would she do if she were him?

She couldn’t find an answer, a heavy weight settling in her heart. She picked up the little wolf, who was still diligently practicing its writing, and held it close, as if its warmth could quell the turmoil within her.

The little fluffball, sensing her troubled mood, tilted its head and licked her cheek comfortingly.

This simple gesture always calmed her.

    Life continued its peaceful rhythm.

The little wolf’s vocabulary expanded, and it could now communicate effectively through writing.

Li Yu’s spiritual energy also gradually returned.

She could now conjure butterfly messages and fly for short periods.

On the day she finally regained her ability to fly, Li Yu excitedly took the little wolf to the edge of the island.

This was the first time she saw the true North Sea beyond the island.

    It was a floating island.

And beneath it, a vast, dark ocean, thousands of feet below.

This was the true North Sea, a deep, lightless abyss.

Yet, a full moon hung in the sky.

The falling snow swirled in the wind, as if yearning to be swallowed by the sea.

The black surface of the ocean was restless, the waves churning, their crests catching the moonlight, fleeting glimpses of silver.

    The vast emptiness was terrifying.

Li Yu held her breath, then quickly returned to the small house, no longer daring to look at the dark abyss.

The little wolf, sensing her fear, looked at her with surprise, and within that surprise, a hint of…joy.

Without a second thought, it jumped from her arms and ran into the swirling snow.

Li Yu, stunned, watched it go, then quickly followed.

The little wolf ran to Weisheng Xuanzhu’s residence, barked and howled until he emerged, then ran towards Qing Nü’s courtyard.

Li Yu followed, confused, and just as she reached the courtyard, she saw Qing Nü emerge from the house and the little wolf writing four clumsy characters in the snow.

    —Li Yu fears the sea!

    “Mu Tao!!!”

Li Yu rushed forward and grabbed the little wolf by the scruff of its neck.

Her grip was gentle; all her anger was in her shout.

The little wolf easily wriggled free, ran to Qing Nü, and quickly wrote another sentence in the snow.

—Even she’s afraid, so it was normal for me to be scared, right?

    Li Yu: “…”

So it was just trying to prove that she wasn’t the only scaredy-cat in the North Sea!

Li Yu took a deep breath.

She had never imagined this little wolf cub could be so…devious!

Her spiritual energy had just barely recovered, she kindly took it for a flight, and this was how it repaid her, revealing her embarrassing secret!

Fortunately, the audience was small; she could handle this.

Besides her and the little wolf, there were only Qing Nü and Weisheng Xuanzhu in the entire North Sea.

She had already been mistaken for an illiterate; a little fear of heights wasn’t a big deal…

Qing Nü chuckled, looking at Li Yu with amusement. “A god from the West Sea, afraid of the sea?”

“Well…” Li Yu frowned and retorted, “Is the West Sea the same as the North Sea?”

The little wolf tilted its head and wrote four characters in the snow.

    —Aren’t they the same?

“Of course not!” Li Yu crouched down, poked the little wolf’s nose, and said seriously, “The sea outside is blue, and the sky is blue, not like the North Sea, a dark, terrifying abyss!”

“Blue?” The little wolf wrote, disbelief in its eyes.

During those early years after gaining awareness, she had lived in the human realm. Although she had never seen the sea, she had seen the sky.

—The sky outside the North Sea is clearly dark red!

The little wolf wrote this with conviction.

    “Dark red?” Li Yu frowned.

Was the human realm four thousand years ago already enveloped in a sea of resentment, just like the City of the Undying?

She thought for a moment. “That wasn’t the sky, that was…resentment.”

    Chapter 78: Why?

Li Yu had a long dream.

In her dream, she was walking a red dog on a leash in the familiar streets of her childhood.

The dog was small, its barks high-pitched, punctuated by occasional howls.

Its little paws trotted along, its fluffy tail swaying, pausing every few steps to look back at her.

Familiar faces, blurred by time, smiled and greeted her.

“Li Yu, since when did you have a dog?”

“Such a beautiful color, is it dyed? It looks so natural!”

“So well-behaved, a good temperament is priceless when it comes to pets…”

Yes, a good temperament was more important than anything.

The dog was beautiful, quiet, not a picky eater, understood human speech, and its tail wagged happily; it was the perfect dog.

The only problem was that this dog was actually a wolf, a very…dog-like wolf.

Outside, it was perfectly behaved, maintaining appearances.

But once inside, it would become much larger,

And then pin her down on the bed, the sofa, the table, the wall, the floor, even the bathroom—licking her relentlessly.

And as it licked, it would transform into a young girl, her slender fingers pinning Li Yu’s struggling hands, demanding her cooperation.

Its soft fur would become a red dress, loose and revealing, as if a gentle tug would expose everything beneath.

The licking would turn into biting, the playful barks into soft whispers of “Master, Master.”

She had never heard a dog make such sounds; it was absurd!

But the girl’s voice was beautiful, each whisper like a ripple in her heart…

Wait, why could she hear silver bells?

She didn’t have any bells in her house—

Li Yu opened her eyes to see a small gray ball of fluff curled up beside her, its pink tongue licking the silver bells on her wrist.

The bells chimed softly with each lick, seemingly amusing the little wolf, whose round eyes sparkled with curiosity.

Outside, the sky was dark, the wind and snow still howling, but a soft, moon-like light illuminated the room.

It had all been a dream.

She wasn’t back in her world, hadn’t brought Mu Tao home… She had even lost Mu Tao.

But she still had a chance to fix everything.

The little wolf continued playing with the silver bell.

The soft chimes and the warm, fleeting touch against her wrist.

“This is a Harmony Bell,” Li Yu said, gently touching the little wolf’s ear.

The little wolf looked up at her, its expression uncomprehending.

“Harmony Bells, they come in pairs.” Li Yu looked into its light brown eyes, a thoughtful smile on her lips. “Two people connected by these bells, no matter where they are, how far apart, can find each other through the sound.”

The little wolf tilted its head, confused, and gently patted the bell with its paw, as if wondering how it could find the other person.

Li Yu: “It’s broken, it doesn’t work anymore.”

“Awooo~” the little wolf whined softly, continuing to play with the bell.

“I broke it, because if I hadn’t…I wouldn’t have the chance to…finish this journey with her.” Li Yu’s voice was soft, a mix of regret and helplessness.

The little wolf didn’t understand but sensed her sadness.

It blinked, then cautiously moved closer, stretched its neck, and licked her lips.

It then quickly retreated, curling up into a ball, its light brown eyes staring at her innocently, as if afraid of being pushed away.

Li Yu froze, then, as the warmth on her lips faded, she smiled and gently petted the little wolf’s head.

    “Are you…comforting me?”

The little wolf whined softly, relaxing under her touch, its paws curling upwards, revealing its soft belly.

Li Yu couldn’t help but smile, gently rubbing its belly.

    It was soft and warm.

The strange emptiness and sadness within her seemed to dissipate.

She pulled the little wolf into her arms, nuzzling her face against its fur, letting it lick her cheek.

The rough, warm touch seemed to ease her fatigue.

After a while, she gently grabbed its paws. “Stop, stop!”

The little wolf stopped licking and tilted its head, looking at her with confusion.

Li Yu: “Can I…give you a name?”

The little wolf blinked, its eyes shining.

It nodded, then shook its head.

Li Yu: “Do you think…we need Qing Nü’s permission?”

The little wolf whimpered and nodded.

Li Yu: “Then let’s go find her!”

    The little wolf nodded happily.

Just as Li Yu got out of bed and walked to the table, intending to warm some water, the door opened, and the bitter smell of medicine, carried by the wind and snow, filled the room.

Weisheng Xuanzhu placed a bowl of medicine on the table.

Looking at the dark liquid, Li Yu’s vision swam, and the spell warming the water in her cup dissipated.

Weisheng Xuanzhu: “It’s time for your medicine.”

Li Yu: “…Don’t you think that’s a bit cruel?”

He looked confused. “Why is it cruel?”

Li Yu: “I just woke up, haven’t even had breakfast, and you’re making me drink this bitter medicine…”

    He still didn’t understand. “So?”

Li Yu: “So my day starts with…bitterness!”

He was silent for a few seconds, seemingly unable to comprehend her logic, then repeated, “It’s time for your medicine.”

    Fine…

Li Yu sighed, picked up the bowl, frowned, and drank the medicine.

Like everything else, even drinking bitter medicine became easier with practice.

Although the taste was still awful, her resistance had lessened.

The little wolf looked up at her, concern and curiosity in its eyes.

Li Yu met its gaze, then, ignoring the pain in her legs, crouched down, lifted the little wolf, and nuzzled its head.

The little wolf, its face full of smiles, licked her lips happily.

    Then its smile vanished.

It tilted its head and started licking the back of Li Yu’s hand, as if trying to remove the bitter taste.

Seeing its pained expression, Li Yu couldn’t help but chuckle.

They said demons, after gaining spiritual awareness, became more and more like humans.

Even this little wolf cub must have developed human-like taste buds.

She wondered if it would ever lick anyone again after this.

As Li Yu laughed, a thought occurred to her, and she looked up at Weisheng Xuanzhu. “I want to give Little Wolf a name, it would be easier.”

    “Isn’t Little Wolf easy enough?”

“It’s different!” Li Yu said seriously. “There are so many wolves in the world, it’s just one of them, but with a name, it becomes unique!”

She released the little wolf, stood up, supporting herself against a stool, and said, “Besides, names are meaningful. Even you, unique in this world, have a name, don’t you?”

The little wolf whined and nodded, its eyes shining.

Weisheng Xuanzhu looked at the little wolf and said, “Talking to me is useless, you have to ask Qing Nü.”

“I was just about to, but your medicine interrupted me.” Li Yu poured herself a cup of warm water, trying to wash away the bitterness in her mouth. “But the path there is difficult, and I’m too weak to fly…”

Thinking of that long journey, she sighed.

She was injured; did she really have to walk?

    …Actually, maybe not!

She looked at the little wolf, which was tilting its head, looking at her.

“Wei…last night, well, I’m not sure if it was night, but yesterday, Qing Nü made Little Wolf very big!” Li Yu put down her teacup and looked at him expectantly. “Can you…do that spell?”

    Weisheng Xuanzhu: “Yes.”

    Li Yu: “A little help?”

The little wolf, hearing this, ran to the door, scratched at it, then ran outside, rolled around in the snow, and barked excitedly, as if saying it was ready.

“It seems eager to carry you,” he said, and with a flicker of white light, summoned the wind and snow, enveloping the little wolf.

    Not stellar energy?

Was he concealing his true power even in his own territory?

    “Awooo~!”

A howl from outside interrupted her thoughts, and she quickly stepped out of the house and climbed onto the large wolf’s back.

Weisheng Xuanzhu also emerged, holding the empty medicine bowl, seemingly not intending to accompany them.

    Li Yu: “Aren’t you coming?”

Weisheng Xuanzhu: “I’m going to the kitchen first.”

Right, it was almost time for a meal.

Li Yu lowered her voice. “The food yesterday…needed a little more salt, just a little, not too much, otherwise it would be too salty.”

    Weisheng Xuanzhu: “…Alright.”

Li Yu wanted to say more, but before she could open her mouth, he transformed into a streak of light and disappeared.

    Fine!

No point in talking to someone who couldn’t communicate.

Li Yu: “Let’s go, take me to Qing Nü!”

The large wolf nodded, howled softly, and then, its paws sinking into the deep snow, started running.

The snow continued to fall, the moon hung high in the sky.

Once again, she buried her face in the wolf’s thick fur, finding comfort amidst the biting wind.

Arriving at their destination, Li Yu immediately told Qing Nü about wanting to give the little wolf a name.

Qing Nü didn’t object, just asked casually, “Have you chosen a name?”

“Mu Tao,” Li Yu replied without hesitation.

    “Which characters?”

“‘Mu’ for yearning, ‘Tao’ for intoxicated.”

Qing Nü crouched down, patted the little wolf’s head, and asked, “Why?”

    Li Yu: “Huh?”

    Qing Nü: “Why that name?”

    Li Yu was momentarily speechless.

Why did she have to explain choosing a name?

The little wolf was Mu Tao, and Mu Tao was the little wolf. Calling Mu Tao “Little Wolf” felt strange, so she wanted to give it its proper name.

The reason was simple, but explaining it to Qing Nü wasn’t.

After a moment of silence, Li Yu smiled and said, “It sounds nice, no other reason.”

    Qing Nü: “No other meaning?”

Li Yu: “The name itself is the meaning, why does it need a special meaning?”

Qing Nü chuckled and looked at the little wolf. “Do you like this name?”

“Awoo!” The little wolf nodded happily.

Qing Nü smiled and poked its nose. “Since you like it, that’s what we’ll call you from now on.”

She stood up and sat back down at the table, not asking any further questions.

Li Yu looked down at the little wolf and called out, “Mu Tao!”

The little wolf, overjoyed at finally having a name, wagged its tail and ran towards her, circling her feet excitedly.

    “Stop spinning! I’m getting dizzy!”

The little wolf whined, then ran into the courtyard and rolled around happily in the snow.

Li Yu slowly followed, sat down by the doorway, scooped up some snow, and formed a snowball. “Mu Tao!”

She threw the snowball, hitting the little wolf, which froze, its eyes wide with surprise.

After a moment, it jumped on Li Yu, its fur covered in snow, and started licking her face enthusiastically.

“Don’t, mm—don’t lick, stop licking!” Li Yu said, laughing.

She held the scruff of its neck with one hand and, with the other, scooped up snow and playfully rubbed it on the little wolf’s face and into its mouth.

The silver bells on her wrist chimed, their sound mixing with her laughter, echoing in the quiet, snowy night.

The usually quiet courtyard was filled with joyful noises.

Qing Nü, watching them play, smiled faintly.

It was time to teach this little wolf how to navigate the human world.

After dinner, Qing Nü said casually, “Xuanzhu, starting tomorrow, teach Mu Tao how to read and write.”

A flicker of confusion appeared in Weisheng Xuanzhu’s eyes. “It’s still so young, shouldn’t we wait?”

“The earlier you start, the faster you learn, the better you remember.” Qing Nü teased him. “You started late, your mind rusty, you were a slow learner.”

    “…”

Li Yu, suppressing a smile, asked curiously, “So late that his mind was rusty? How late did he start?”

“About three thousand years ago?” Qing Nü said, then, turning to Weisheng Xuanzhu, asked uncertainly, “Were you…four thousand years old then?”

He frowned. “I don’t remember exactly, around that age…”

Four thousand years old, that was indeed a bit late!

But then again, in a desolate place like the North Sea, who would have taught him?

But if everything Weisheng Xuanzhu knew was taught by Qing Nü after she arrived, wouldn’t that mean she had been in the North Sea for over three thousand years?

The North Sea was so barren, why would she stay here for so long? Was there a special reason?

Li Yu couldn’t figure it out, so she put the question aside for now.

Three days after regaining consciousness, as soon as she finished her medicine, Li Yu sat by the doorway, watching the little wolf’s reading lesson with amusement.

There were no writing materials in the North Sea, but the snow served as a blank canvas.

A pure white light illuminated a small area as the little wolf, looking listless, lay on the snow, clumsily tracing the first character it was learning with its paw.

More accurately, not the first character, but the first name.

Weisheng Xuanzhu had wanted to start with something simpler, but Li Yu believed that children should first learn their own names and the names of their loved ones.

So, the difficulty level of the little wolf’s first lesson was significantly higher.

The two characters of “Mu Tao,” for a little wolf just learning to write, were far too complex, and its paw wasn’t exactly a precise writing tool.

As it struggled, the little wolf suddenly became frustrated.

Li Yu heard a frustrated yelp.

The little wolf’s paws swiped angrily at the snow,

Then it lay down, its head on the ground, whimpering and biting at the snow,

Its round eyes burning with rage.

    Li Yu stared, speechless.

She hadn’t imagined Mu Tao having such a temper.

    But this outburst was brief.

As ice shards formed in the air, silently hovering around it, the little wolf flinched and quieted down.

    “Continue.”

“Awooo…” The little wolf reluctantly resumed practicing, carefully tracing the characters of its name.

The ice shards hovered menacingly, mirroring its every move, preventing any further outbursts, until it finally mastered the two characters.

As soon as the stern teacher left, the little wolf whined and ran to Li Yu, complaining in a language she couldn’t understand.

Although she couldn’t understand the words, the frustrated tone was clear.

Li Yu patted its head and said gently, “If you’re obedient, and promise not to throw a tantrum like that again, I can ask Qing Nü to let me teach you how to write, then…Xuanzhu won’t have the opportunity to scare you anymore.”

She tilted her head and winked at the little wolf. “What do you think?”

The little wolf nodded obediently and licked her hand.

Qing Nü had no objections to who taught the little wolf.

“Anyone is fine, as long as it learns.”

Hearing this, the little wolf happily jumped into Li Yu’s arms.

Li Yu was patient, coaxing the little wolf through each character.

But the little fluffball wasn’t very enthusiastic about learning and needed constant encouragement, often resorting to licking and nibbling as a form of persuasion.

    Time passed quickly.

In the blink of an eye, over a month had gone by.

During this time, the little wolf learned many characters, and Li Yu’s injuries improved significantly.

The scabs on her wounds had fallen off, and the chill in her meridians had dissipated.

Finally, she no longer needed that awful medicine!

This should have been a cause for celebration, but on the day she stopped taking the medicine, she experienced the most embarrassing moment of her life.

—Weisheng Xuanzhu decided to test the little wolf’s progress.

Li Yu swore she had been diligently teaching, and the little wolf had learned many characters!

But she had overlooked a crucial detail.

She had taught it simplified characters!

For a moment, she felt Weisheng Xuanzhu looking at her like she was an illiterate fool, his eyes filled with disbelief.

Li Yu, with your level of knowledge, you dared to teach Little Wolf? his gaze seemed to ask.

Of course, he didn’t say it out loud.

He just sighed deeply after a long silence and said calmly, “Starting tomorrow, you and Mu Tao will study together.”

Li Yu’s lips tightened into a thin line; she could only nod, not daring to speak.

The little wolf tilted its head, looking at them with confusion, unaware that its teacher was about to be demoted to its classmate.

Li Yu wanted to explain—although she had been careless, there was a reason.

Since arriving in this world, she had either been recuperating at Chaoxi Pond, traveling in the human realm, or on the run; she hadn’t had the time or opportunity to pay attention to the characters used in this world.

And it wasn’t that she couldn’t recognize traditional characters; whenever she saw shop signs in the human realm, her mind automatically translated them, she just hadn’t memorized their forms!

    Fine, she would learn…

Knowledge was knowledge; learning more couldn’t hurt.

From that day on, Li Yu also picked up a twig and started practicing writing in the snow.

But to prove she wasn’t illiterate, she earnestly explained to Weisheng Xuanzhu, “Just to be clear, I’m learning from you not because I don’t know how to write, but because I’m…adapting to the local customs.”

    “…”

“That’s how we write in my hometown, it’s a regional difference, not a mistake!”

    “…”

“Don’t underestimate them, the characters in my hometown are excellent, simple, easy to remember, fewer strokes, just like your name—” Li Yu wrote his name in the snow. “See? Just a few strokes, much more convenient, right?”

    “…”

“Want to learn? I can teach you!” Li Yu smiled, then, seeing his lack of interest, sighed. “Fine, fine, I’ll adapt to the local customs.”

She rolled her eyes and continued practicing the “new” characters she had just learned.

Li Yu, as a student, had a good foundation and learned quickly.

But Mu Tao, starting from scratch and having learned the wrong characters, was struggling.

After finally memorizing some characters, suddenly being told they were mostly wrong, the little wolf wilted dejectedly in the snow.

After a brief moment of despair, it used its paw to write its question in the snow—Why?

Since it wrote the question in simplified characters, the teacher punished it by making it copy “Why?” twenty times in traditional characters.

The snow was covered in messy characters spelling out “Why?!”

It was a beautiful sight, truly.

And Li Yu, despite her best efforts, couldn’t contain her laughter.

Chapter 77: She Had Been Here Before

Li Yu looked at Qing Nü, her mind buzzing with questions.

Why did the guardian of the Upper Spirit Lamp disappear for millennia? And why reappear in this desolate North Sea Abyss?

Wasn’t the North Sea supposed to be a lightless sea? What was with the unchanging full moon? And was it connected to the ancient god Si Qinglan sought?

And most importantly, did Qing Nü truly fall into darkness willingly?

But these questions felt too intrusive.

    Qing Nü: “You seem troubled.”

    Li Yu: “…”

Qing Nü: “If your troubles are related to me, ask whatever you want, don’t hesitate.”

    Li Yu: “…”

“If you can’t ask, or can’t understand, just put it aside for now.” Qing Nü said. “Many things in life…become clearer with time.”

Li Yu couldn’t help but ask, “What if…even after a long time, there are still no answers?”

“Then it hasn’t been long enough.” Qing Nü smiled faintly. “If it has been long enough, even without answers, you should be able to let go.”

“Haven’t you ever…had anything you couldn’t let go of?”

“I have.” Qing Nü replied softly.

    “Then…”

“But I’m almost there.” She looked down at the tea in her cup, her eyes obscured by the rising steam.

Perhaps her mind was also filled with countless thoughts, but there was a moon-like serenity in her gaze.

Li Yu had imagined that Qing Nü, the guardian of the Upper Spirit Lamp, before falling into darkness, would be cold and aloof, like the moon in the high heavens.

Like the moon hanging above the North Sea, a distant light illuminating the endless night.

But Qing Nü wasn’t like that.

Sitting beside her now, Li Yu felt neither a welcoming warmth nor a chilling distance, just a comfortable, natural ease.

Like just now, when Qing Nü had asked her some questions, and she, Li Yu, had panicked, unable to answer, Qing Nü had simply smiled and moved on.

Not only that, but she seemed willing to offer guidance.

Li Yu looked into those night-sky blue eyes, searching for something—wariness, displeasure, or perhaps careful scrutiny.

    But there was none.

Qing Nü seemed genuinely unconcerned, readily letting go of unanswered questions.

She didn’t treat Li Yu as an intruder.

Even though her arrival was unexpected, her injuries unusual, her heart filled with unspoken secrets—she was still welcome here.

Li Yu could sense an indescribable serenity about Qing Nü, an acceptance of everything.

She wasn’t like the moon; she was like the moonlight, gentle and familiar.

Could such a person truly be the one who, unwilling to fade away, released the Heavenly Demon Soul Seed and fell into darkness?

And if Qing Nü was killed by the gods and immortals, how did a fragment of her Demon Bone end up in Mu Tao…?

The little wolf emerged from under the table, its tail wagging, nuzzling against Li Yu’s leg.

“I’ve raised it for over three hundred years, and I’ve never seen it so clingy,” Qing Nü chuckled, her tone gentle. “It likes your scent.”

The stalled conversation flowed naturally again.

“Huh?” Li Yu snapped back to reality and instinctively sniffed herself.

There was a faint, woody fragrance, calming and pleasant, but it wasn’t hers; it was the scent of her clothes.

These weren’t her clothes, probably Qing Nü’s. If the little wolf liked the scent, why seek her out specifically?

What other scent could she possibly have?

Surely not the blood from her injuries?

Seeing her confusion, Qing Nü smiled. “You don’t have its nose, how could you possibly smell it?”

“A dog’s nose? So sensitive!” Li Yu poked the little wolf’s head.

The little wolf whined softly, its paws gripping her ankle, its teeth gently nibbling her skirt, a playful protest.

Li Yu asked curiously, “Why is there a wolf in the North Sea?”

Qing Nü: “I brought it back from the human realm.”

    Li Yu: “The human realm?”

    Qing Nü: “Mm.”

“After so many years, with no news from you, everyone thought…” Li Yu stopped mid-sentence, realizing her mistake.

Qing Nü smiled faintly, not offended. “Thought I was…gone?”

“Mm…” Li Yu nodded and whispered, “I didn’t expect…you to be in the North Sea, and to have even visited the human realm three hundred years ago.”

“I went to see an old friend and happened to pass by the human realm, where I saw this little wolf.” Qing Nü’s voice was calm yet gentle. “The resentment in the human realm was strong, and it was just a small wolf cub, newly awakened, almost consumed by the resentment. I felt sorry for it, so I brought it back.”

Qing Nü smiled. “It didn’t like it here at first.”

    Li Yu: “That’s understandable.”

“Indeed, the North Sea is cold and dark; few creatures would willingly live here…” Qing Nü looked at the little wolf. “But it seems to have adapted now.”

The little wolf was busy playing with the hem of Li Yu’s robe.

Li Yu looked at it and said softly, “It’s lucky to have been saved by you.”

She then asked tentatively, “You mentioned…an old friend?”

Qing Nü: “Yetan, I haven’t seen her in a while, so I went to visit.”

So the two ancient gods met before the Heavenly Demon was revived…

    Was this important information?

Li Yu couldn’t figure it out, so she continued asking, “What are your thoughts…on the current resentment in the human realm?”

Qing Nü shook her head and said softly, “All beings suffer. Resentment in the human realm will never truly disappear, it only accumulates—The Heavenly Demon’s revival…is inevitable.”

    Li Yu: “…”

Qing Nü: “You seem…quite concerned about this.”

Li Yu nodded, the worry evident in her eyes.

Qing Nü: “This isn’t the first time the Heavenly Demon has been revived. There’s always a way to seal it again; there’s no need to worry so much.”

    Li Yu: “…”

    Was she truly so optimistic?

The little wolf, seemingly not understanding their conversation, whined softly, released the hem of Li Yu’s robe, drooped its ears, and rested its head on her foot.

Although the little wolf’s head wasn’t heavy, it still made Li Yu wince; her foot was injured.

Qing Nü: “Little Wolf, Li Yu is injured, don’t touch her wounds.”

The little wolf quickly looked up at Li Yu, whimpering softly, as if apologizing.

“I’ve been unconscious for so long, my wounds have already scabbed over; it doesn’t hurt that much.” Li Yu said, petting the little wolf’s head. “Actually, the journey here was more painful.”

“If you know it’s painful, then you should rest.” Qing Nü said earnestly. “Right now, the most important thing for you…is to recover.”

“I’m usually very good at resting…” Li Yu didn’t think she was lying.

“External injuries heal quickly, but internal injuries take time.” Qing Nü poured herself another cup of tea. “I examined your meridians; the damage is severe, new injuries layered upon old ones, clearly from overexertion.”

    “…”

“Your cultivation level is incredibly rare in this world.” Qing Nü looked at Li Yu seriously. “I won’t ask why you’ve pushed yourself so hard, nor whether your goals have been achieved—Since you’re here, since I saved you, your life is temporarily mine. If you refuse to rest and recover, I will have to…take measures.”

    Li Yu blinked, surprised. “…Measures?”

“Mm.” Qing Nü took a sip of tea and smiled. “I can seal your spiritual energy, confine you with a barrier, and personally help you circulate your spiritual energy once a day, until you recover, or until you give up struggling.”

    “…”

“And if even that can’t stop you, I’ll trap you in a dream until your injuries are healed.”

    “…”

Such a simple, yet effective approach.

So, both Mu Tao and Weisheng Xuanzhu learned from her, using similar methods to ensure obedience.

Li Yu: “I’ll rest and recover.”

Qing Nü: “Your injuries…don’t suggest someone willing to rest.”

Li Yu couldn’t help but smile wryly. “Don’t worry, even if I wanted to do something, I’m…stuck here for now.”

    Qing Nü: “That’s true.”

As she spoke, she heard a rumbling sound and looked at Li Yu’s stomach.

    Li Yu: “…”

Qing Nü chuckled. “It’s difficult to abstain from food when injured, I’ll have Xuanzhu prepare a meal for you.”

Li Yu panicked slightly. “He…I… Where’s the kitchen? I can cook myself…”

Before she could finish, a white spiritual butterfly flew out the window, disappearing into the snow.

So, she was being served by the antagonist of this story. How ironic.

But whether it was medicine or food, it was all the same.

Since someone was willing to wait on her, she might as well enjoy it.

    Soon, a warm meal arrived.

With no distinction between day and night in the North Sea, she didn’t know whether it was breakfast, lunch, or dinner, only that she had been hungry for a long time and everything tasted delicious.

The only slightly awkward part was—among the three people and one wolf in the room, she was the only one eating.

The little wolf sat beside her, tilting its head, its big, light brown eyes staring at her intently.

“It’s still so young, it probably can’t abstain from food yet, right?” Li Yu asked softly. “Can I…give it some?”

She needed a dining companion to ease the awkwardness, and this little wolf cub seemed like the most likely candidate.

Weisheng Xuanzhu: “It ate before you woke up.”

“Perhaps it’s still hungry…” Li Yu looked down at the little wolf. “Look at it, it keeps staring at me, it clearly wants some.”

“It has a big appetite, it eats whatever you give it, never truly full.” Weisheng Xuanzhu said calmly. “It might look like it wants to eat, but it’s not hungry, just greedy.”

    He sounded experienced.

The little wolf, seemingly unhappy with his assessment, lay down and whined softly.

Li Yu, now certain of her suspicions,

Chuckled. “There’s no rule that says you have to be hungry to eat. It’s fine to eat even if you’re just craving something, and this little guy doesn’t have to worry about getting fat.”

She poked the little wolf’s head.

The little wolf looked up, its tail wagging happily.

A dining companion acquired. Sharing her meal with the little wolf, one bite for her, one bite for it, eased the awkwardness.

After finishing her meal, Li Yu held the little wolf in her lap, petting its fur behind its ears, a sense of contentment settling over her.

The little wolf was warm like a furnace, and feeling full and warm, she became drowsy.

She dozed off, and when she opened her eyes again, only she and Qing Nü remained in the room.

Qing Nü: “Go and sleep on the bed.”

    Li Yu: “That…wouldn’t be appropriate…”

Qing Nü’s house was small, just a single room, no guest room, only one bed.

As a guest, taking the only bed seemed rude.

“I should probably go back,” Li Yu said, placing the little wolf on the table.

She took two deep breaths, stood up, supporting herself against the table.

The thought of the long journey back made her injured legs and feet ache.

Qing Nü: “Let Little Wolf take you.”

Li Yu readily agreed. “I…don’t really know the way.”

As soon as she finished speaking, the little wolf ran to the courtyard, wagged its tail, and looked at Qing Nü, barking twice.

Before Li Yu could understand what it was saying, a swirling wind and snow enveloped the little wolf.

Li Yu’s heart clenched, and she rushed out of the house, her legs and feet miraculously less painful for a moment.

Just as she was about to use a spell to dispel the wind and snow, it vanished.

A large wolf, almost taller than her, stood before her.

The wolf lowered its body, offering her its back, but Li Yu just stared, stunned.

After a moment, the wolf turned its head and licked her face.

Li Yu snapped back to reality and looked back at Qing Nü.

Qing Nü smiled and waved. “The spell won’t last long, hurry back and rest.”

The large wolf licked Li Yu’s face again.

Li Yu pushed its head away, wiped her face with her sleeve, and climbed onto its back, holding onto its thick fur.

Unable to contain her excitement, she gently stroked the wolf’s neck.

The wolf shook its head, stood up, took a few slow steps, then suddenly started running through the snowy night.

The wind howled past her ears.

Even with her spiritual energy, the wind was incredibly strong.

She lowered her body, burying her face in the wolf’s thick fur.

    This was Qing Nü’s spell…

Could Mu Tao do this too when she grew up? she wondered.

First of all, she wasn’t a furry!

Secondly, this wasn’t about riding or not!

The point was, this giant wolf was incredibly comfortable to hug!

So comfortable that she buried her face in its fur, nuzzling against its warm neck, almost purring with contentment.

    She was going to die!

If this lasted any longer, she wouldn’t want it to change back!

The large wolf also seemed to enjoy it, and after carrying her back to her residence, as she carefully dismounted, it turned its head and licked her face, its tongue sweeping from her chin to her nose.

    “Don’t…”

Before she could finish, the large, wet tongue interrupted her.

After a few licks, she grabbed the wolf’s head, trying to pull it away, but she was no match for its strength.

    Thankfully, it gradually shrunk.

The large wolf became a small wolf, easily held in her arms.

Its short legs dangled in the air, its tail wagging weakly, its little tongue still trying to lick her, now unable to reach.

After a few frustrated attempts at licking the air, the little gray wolf finally stopped.

It tilted its head, its eyes unfocused as its paws flailed slightly.

Li Yu pinched its paws, making it yelp softly.

“Will you stop licking me now?”

The little wolf, as if understanding it had done something wrong, hung its head, not daring to speak—of course, it couldn’t speak anyway.

Li Yu glared at the little wolf cub, her face still wet, until it completely wilted, then she carried it inside and placed it on the floor.

The little wolf immediately hid under the table.

Li Yu found a cloth, warmed some water, and wiped her face.

She was truly afraid of this little glutton.

When it was small, it was manageable, but when it was large, it was like a wild beast, impossible to control.

    She retracted her earlier thought!

Small wolves were better, large ones were too much to handle!

Li Yu thought this, put down the cloth, and lay down on the bed, exhausted.

She hugged the blanket, staring at the bed curtains, lost in thought.

Before today, she never imagined coming to the North Sea four thousand years ago, meeting a seemingly normal Weisheng Xuanzhu, and encountering Qing Nü, the ancient god who had become the Heavenly Demon.

And…the little Mu Tao from before, untouched by the Demon Bone, unable to even speak.

What happened in the North Sea four thousand years ago wasn’t just a question Weisheng Xuanzhu wanted answered anymore.

Since waking up, her mind had been a blur.

Too much information, too difficult to process.

Li Yu lay in bed, thinking, slowly piecing together the clues.

When she was still on Mount Chao Yao, Weisheng Xuanzhu had repeatedly asked her about what happened four thousand years ago.

He was convinced that the answers the original “Li Yu” gave him were lies.

And he was also convinced that only “Li Yu” could tell him the truth.

This had puzzled her, she wasn’t “Li Yu”; how could she possibly know the answers he wanted?

But now, she finally understood why he was so persistent.

    —Because she had been here.

Weisheng Xuanzhu couldn’t believe that Qing Nü would willingly fall into darkness.

But whether he believed it or not, Qing Nü had become a sinner, her name forever tarnished.

He believed there must be a hidden truth, and the only person who might know it was the one who had appeared in the North Sea before it all happened…

And that person, he believed, was the new guardian of the Upper Spirit Lamp—Li Yu.

So, the former “Li Yu” was the one who couldn’t possibly know the truth.

“She” must have also been confused, wondering why he kept asking about the Heavenly Demon incident, as if seeking an answer different from the commonly accepted story.

But “she” had participated in that battle, she must have seen Qing Nü after she fell into darkness and joined the other gods and immortals in slaying her.

The answer “she” could give him should have been the same as everyone else’s.

Perhaps, long before she arrived in this world, he had already stopped asking “Li Yu” this question.

He must have given up on getting an answer from “her.”

That’s why he plotted to revive the Heavenly Demon, to revive the ancient god Qing Nü.

And in his plan, the resentment in the human realm was just one component.

Reviving the Heavenly Demon wouldn’t be easy; to ensure success, he needed to weaken the guardian of the Upper Spirit Lamp and sever the connection to the Heavenly Gate.

The black-robed figure never appeared directly, neither during the theft of the Lamp nor after its retrieval.

She had been puzzled by this, but now she realized that perhaps Weisheng Xuanzhu instructed Xiang Hanyu to steal the Lamp simply to weaken her, damage her reputation, and then find an opportunity to force her to open the Heavenly Gate.

Then, he could destroy the last connection between the human realm and the Heavenly Realm.

He didn’t care whether Xiang Hanyu gave him the Lamp or not.

He probably anticipated that she wouldn’t, which was precisely why he chose her as his pawn.

Obtaining the Upper Spirit Lamp was easy for him; he had been maintaining the seal on Suiqiong Cave for millennia; why would he need someone else to steal it?

This was a move he had complete control over.

And Mu Tao’s exposure was an unexpected bonus.

A Heavenly Demon revived solely from its soul fragment might not be connected to Qing Nü, but the Demon Bone was different.

For the Demon Bone to appear in that little wolf, it must have belonged to Qing Nü…

This way, when the Heavenly Demon was revived, he would finally have the answers he sought.

The instability of the seal on Suiqiong Cave was just the beginning of his plan.

He knew that once he started, there was no turning back.

So, clinging to a sliver of hope, he asked her about that “matter from the past” one last time.

    This time was different.

He saw her hesitation, her evasion.

This further confirmed his belief that “Li Yu” had lied to him.

So, he asked her two more times.

But Li Yu didn’t know that Weisheng Xuanzhu hadn’t mistaken her for someone else.

He wasn’t asking the original owner of this body, but the Li Yu he knew—the Li Yu who had appeared in the North Sea four thousand years ago.

She only realized now that the sudden increase in her compatibility in Suiqiong Cave wasn’t because he was secretly pleased by her scolding him.

It was because he recognized her…

And Mu Tao, with the Demon Bone, appearing four thousand years later, must also be connected to her, right?

Everything was a circle, its beginning unclear, yet its path predetermined.

So, she wasn’t just here to find an answer but also to…continue the cycle, wasn’t she?

What would happen next was unknown…

But one thing was certain; when she left, she would take Mu Tao with her.

    Li Yu felt exhausted.

    Thinking while unwell was tiring.

She closed her eyes, deciding to get some sleep.

The little wolf under the table peeked out,

Tilting its head, staring at Li Yu with its wide eyes.

Hearing her breathing even out, it carefully climbed onto the bed, snuggled against her, and curled up into a small ball of fluff,

    Falling asleep beside her.

  • Devilish Disciple [Transmigration] 76

Chapter 76: Ancient God Qing Nü

The warm, wet sensation on her fingertip made Li Yu freeze.

She stared at the small, gray ball of fluff at her feet,

Watching as it gently nibbled her finger, its mouth moving playfully.

Watching as it tilted its head, its round eyes staring at her, its tail wagging.

    This little puppy…was a wolf?

And it had light brown eyes…

Li Yu felt a sudden surge of disorientation.

Thoughts and memories collided in her mind, too fast to grasp, a chaotic jumble without direction.

The bitterness in her mouth intensified the confusion.

The little wolf, seeing her unresponsive, released her finger and nuzzled her hand with its fluffy head.

“It found you in the snow half a month ago,” Weisheng Xuanzhu said.

“Half a month ago…” Li Yu frowned. She had been unconscious for that long?

“You were badly injured, your protective aura dissipated, but thankfully, your wounds were frozen, minimizing blood loss.”

    “…So she was quite resilient.

“But the cold seeped into your heart meridian; it will take time to heal.”

Cold seeping into her heart meridian?

When Mu Tao was injured, kneeling in the snow for three days and three nights, she had also suffered from this.

Now she had experienced it herself, even receiving medicine from the same person.

    How ironic.

Weisheng Xuanzhu: “It…likes you very much. Ever since I brought you back, it comes every day to…see you.”

    That slight pause was telling.

Li Yu suspected this little wolf had been licking her for half a month.

Li Yu: “Does it…like to lick people…?”

Weisheng Xuanzhu: “It likes to lick you.”

    Li Yu: “…”

She suddenly felt like a giant lollipop, being licked by this little wolf.

Strangely, she didn’t find it repulsive.

A strange, almost impossible thought crossed her mind.

She blurted out, “What’s its name?”

    Weisheng Xuanzhu: “Little Wolf.”

Li Yu: “Just Little Wolf? No name?”

“It can’t even talk yet; we can name it after it matures and transforms.” He said. “There’s no other wolf here anyway; any name will do.”

His tone was calm, his voice the same as she remembered, yet the overall impression was different.

He seemed…more human, less like the cold, distant iceberg she knew, every word laced with a chilling aura.

This was the first time she felt…comfortable talking to him.

No, wait, she was getting distracted, back to the little wolf…

“How old is this Little Wolf?” she asked.

“I don’t remember exactly,” he said, “Perhaps…over three hundred years old.”

    Over three hundred years old…

That didn’t seem right. Mu Tao had transformed at just over two hundred; how could this little wolf, over three hundred years old, still be unable to speak?

    Wait!

He had said it wasn’t mature yet…

System, in the world of Demon Bone, at what age do demons usually mature? Are there differences between races? And within the same race, could there be variations?

【In the world of Demon Bone, demons are considered adults at five hundred years old, counting from the year they awaken their spiritual awareness. Most demons can only transform after reaching adulthood.】

    Five hundred years old?

So, Mu Tao being on Mount Chao Yao for over two hundred years didn’t necessarily mean she was only that old?

She almost forgot the question the system asked her at the entrance to the Demon Realm.

The Heavenly Demon died over four thousand years ago. Why did its Demon Bone appear four thousand years later, and why was it brought to Mount Chao Yao by Si Qinglan?

The original story didn’t answer this.

And having no clues, she had never considered it seriously.

But now, she felt like she had found a piece of the puzzle.

The system said demons matured at five hundred, so when Mu Tao was brought to Mount Chao Yao, she was probably around three hundred years old.

This little wolf’s age matched Mu Tao’s.

And four thousand years ago, the Heavenly Demon died in the North Sea, and this little wolf also lived in the North Sea.

    Could it be…Mu Tao?

    Li Yu’s gaze unfocused slightly.

She remembered Mu Tao, who had never left the mountain before, saying she liked the sea.

And she remembered Mu Tao’s regret at never having met Weisheng Xuanzhu…

Were these subtle hints related to the North Sea four thousand years ago?

If this little wolf truly was Mu Tao, why did she have the Demon Bone, and how did she appear four thousand years later?

    What happened during that time?

Li Yu now wanted the answer to this question even more than Weisheng Xuanzhu.

    She suddenly felt dizzy.

The physical exhaustion interrupted her thoughts.

It felt like trying to see clearly through a thick fog, everything hazy and indistinct.

The more she tried to grasp something, the more elusive it became.

The flow of time within the Jinxu Gui must be different from the outside world, or perhaps there was no time within it at all, otherwise the system would have declared her mission a failure.

If she was indeed in the correct time period, then perhaps she just needed to wait patiently, let events unfold, and she would have the answers she needed to stop Weisheng Xuanzhu.

If so, she could allow herself to rest.

Thinking this, she sat down, her mind foggy, and absently started petting the little wolf, trying to clear her thoughts.

As she pushed those puzzling questions aside, the dizziness subsided.

The bitter smell of medicine still lingered in the air, and Weisheng Xuanzhu seemed to be saying something to the little wolf.

Li Yu returned to reality and, seeing the little wolf about to leave with Weisheng Xuanzhu, instinctively grabbed the scruff of its neck.

“Yelp?” The little wolf froze, as if held by a spell.

Wolves, like dogs, became docile when their scruff was grabbed, unable to move.

It made you want to pick them up and cuddle them.

“Wei…” Li Yu wanted to ask Weisheng Xuanzhu if the little wolf could stay with her, then she realized—she shouldn’t know his name.

She tried to act casual, but Weisheng Xuanzhu, who had already reached the door, turned around and looked at her.

After a brief awkward silence, Li Yu released the little wolf and asked softly, “Um…could it…stay with me for a bit?”

Weisheng Xuanzhu paused, looked at the little wolf, and said, “If it wants to stay, then…”

Before he could finish, the little wolf had already settled comfortably at Li Yu’s feet.

    So easily swayed.

He sighed and said, “Let it be.”

“Thank you!” Li Yu said, happily petting the little wolf’s ears, then asked casually, “By the way, what should I call you?”

    Weisheng Xuanzhu: “Xuanzhu.”

    Li Yu blinked. “Xuanzhu?”

    Weisheng Xuanzhu: “Mm.”

Wasn’t that a bit too informal, just his given name?

Li Yu: “Xuanzhu…sounds like a given name. What’s your family name?”

He frowned, confused. “What family name? My name is Xuanzhu.”

    Was that so?

So, the Weisheng Xuanzhu from before…was just called Xuanzhu?

    Li Yu was momentarily stunned.

    Weisheng Xuanzhu: “What’s wrong?”

Li Yu quickly shook her head. “Nothing, my name is Li Yu.”

She smiled and waved at him, as if dismissing him.

He didn’t linger, just said, “Rest well,” and then disappeared into the wind and snow.

As Li Yu stared at the doorway, lost in thought, a furry little head nuzzled against her ankle.

Her ankle was injured, and even through the bandages and her robes, the touch made her skin itch.

The sensation was uncomfortable, but she couldn’t scold the little creature, so she just bent down, picked it up by the scruff of its neck, and placed it in her lap.

The little wolf curled up into a ball of gray fluff, its light brown eyes staring at her, incredibly docile.

It was quite warm; holding it made her hands feel less cold.

Li Yu couldn’t resist petting the little wolf.

Its fluffy head, its pointy ears, its soft neck and back, its fluffy tail.

As she petted it, it stretched languidly in her lap.

Then, before she could react, it stretched its neck and licked her chin.

The momentary warmth, quickly turning cold, startled her. The little wolf was now licking her neck.

Li Yu instinctively tried to pull away, but the little tongue followed persistently.

Like that little glutton, once it started, it wouldn’t stop.

“Why do you like licking me so much…?”

The little wolf didn’t answer, just continued licking.

Li Yu chuckled, pulled it away, and held it up in the air.

The little gray wolf struggled, its paws and tail flailing, then, seeing it couldn’t escape, it drooped its ears, its tail still, and whimpered softly.

Those soft whimpers melted Li Yu’s heart, and she pulled it back into her arms.

“I wasn’t trying to scold you, just…don’t lick me so much…”

The little wolf turned away, its pointy ears flattened against its head.

Li Yu gently patted its head.

Soon, it seemed to have calmed down and snuggled into her arms, its body warm like a little furnace.

    Was it you, Mu Tao…?

It was just as clingy as Mu Tao, and just as easily appeased.

She wanted to be certain, yet she didn’t dare.

The wind and snow howled outside, making her heart even more restless.

After a long moment, Li Yu stood up, carefully carrying the little wolf, and walked towards the door.

She couldn’t keep overthinking like this.

Perhaps she should go outside, get some fresh air, and clear her mind.

Or perhaps she should explore and familiarize herself with this place, this North Sea, to better prepare for the unknown.

Thinking this, she opened the door—a biting wind and swirling snow assaulted her, threatening to bury her small frame.

The sudden cold almost stole her breath.

She hastily conjured her protective aura, gasping for air.

This place was much colder than Chaoxi Pond in winter…

She suddenly didn’t feel like exploring anymore. Her legs and feet ached; wouldn’t it be better to just stay inside?

Li Yu squinted slightly, peering outside.

    Then she froze.

The North Sea was said to be a sea of eternal night, untouched by light.

    But she saw a moon.

A full moon, high in the night sky.

She had never seen such a large moon, much larger than any she could remember, yet it wasn’t oppressive.

It wasn’t just larger; it was also brighter,

A gentle brightness that didn’t hurt her eyes, just a soft, pure moonlight that illuminated the falling snow, bathing the world in a gentle, silvery glow.

Li Yu stared at the moon, mesmerized.

She seemed to hear Mu Tao’s voice.

She had said that she quickly adapted to the Demon Realm.

She had said that she liked the cold, the darkness, the quiet solitude, the feeling of a clean, untainted world.

And she had said that the only thing missing in the Demon Realm was the moon.

Cold, dark, quiet, pure, and a moon…

    So, Mu Tao…

…was she truly from this place, four thousand years ago?

The little wolf suddenly jumped down and ran off in a certain direction.

Li Yu snapped out of her daze and tried to follow, but her legs ached, every step a struggle.

The little wolf stopped, looked back at her, tilting its head.

After a moment, it ran back, circled Li Yu twice, then, slowing down, started walking in the same direction again.

It would take a few steps, look back to make sure Li Yu was following, then continue.

Its small paw prints in the deep snow, like plum blossoms scattered on the ground.

“Where are you taking me?” Li Yu asked, her voice weary.

The little wolf barked twice, seemingly answering seriously, but she didn’t understand, so it was like receiving no answer at all.

But even without an answer, she followed the little wolf for a long time.

In the North Sea, there was only night, no day, and the moon seemed to hang eternally in the sky. She couldn’t tell the time, nor how far they had walked.

Perhaps they hadn’t gone far, just…the journey felt long and arduous because of her slow pace and her injuries.

Li Yu continued following the little wolf.

She saw a faint light in the distance.

As they approached, she saw, through the swirling snow, a small courtyard.

Why was this little wolf cub taking her to someone else’s house?

    Was this Weisheng Xuanzhu’s residence…?

Was it just taking her home?

Having hobbled so far in the middle of the night, if it was just to knock on Weisheng Xuanzhu’s door, wouldn’t that be strange?

Although it was always night in the North Sea, and one could only visit at night—it still felt odd!

Li Yu hesitated, not wanting to approach, and the little wolf, seeing this, stopped as well, circling her feet.

Then it lay down in the snow and rolled around playfully,

As if saying it wouldn’t move until she followed.

“Alright, alright, get up!” Li Yu relented. “I’ll go with you!”

The little wolf jumped up, wagging its fluffy tail, and ran towards the courtyard.

Li Yu followed slowly, her steps unsteady, her footprints uneven in the snow.

The little wolf reached the gate, looked back at Li Yu, then barked twice at the closed door.

Its barks, although soft, were clear in the otherwise silent world.

    The door opened.

It wasn’t Weisheng Xuanzhu who emerged, but a woman with delicate features.

She was dressed in black, her silver hair, like snow, adorned with simple, moon-shaped ornaments.

Her eyes, a deep, night sky blue, gentle and warm, as if only the moonlight could match their brilliance.

The little wolf sat at her feet, its tail wagging.

She stroked its fur, looked up at Li Yu, smiled faintly, and said softly, “You’re finally awake.”

Her voice was cool, yet welcoming.

A pure white light, like snow, enveloped Li Yu.

The pain and fatigue in her body eased slightly.

She looked at the silver-haired woman, and although she hadn’t asked, a name appeared in her mind.

“Little Wolf said you wanted to see me,” the woman said, petting the little wolf’s head, then glanced at the house behind her. “It’s cold and windy outside, would you like to come in?”

“Huh?” Li Yu was stunned, unsure why she would want to see this woman.

But confused as she was, she followed the woman inside.

The room was warm and brightly lit.

The silver-haired woman sat down and poured Li Yu a cup of hot tea.

Li Yu quickly took the cup, carefully placed it on the table, sat down, and sighed in relief.

    —Her legs ached terribly.

The silver-haired woman smiled. “Where did this little fish come from? So careless with your own body, so badly injured, yet you traveled all the way here instead of resting.”

“I didn’t intend to come here; it brought me,” Li Yu said, pointing at the little wolf.

The little wolf tilted its head, stared at her with wide, innocent eyes, and barked softly, as if protesting—How could you slander me like that?

    Its aggrieved expression seemed genuine.

Li Yu explained again, “I didn’t even know who you were; how could I have told it I wanted to see you?”

“Awoo!” The little wolf barked and hid under the table, then peeked out and nuzzled Li Yu’s leg.

    “…?”

It barked again, as if wanting to be petted.

Li Yu instinctively patted its head, and it quickly retreated under the table again, growling softly, seemingly sulking.

The silver-haired woman chuckled. “Didn’t you say you wanted to see its master?”

The little wolf under the table whined in response.

Li Yu froze, then realized. “You…you’re its master? I thought…I thought its master was…that…”

    “Xuanzhu?”

    “Yes!”

“He’s too…straightforward. This little creature, finally awakened its spiritual awareness, can’t be left in his care.” The woman said calmly. “It would be raised into a blockhead.”

Li Yu couldn’t help but nod in agreement.

Too accurate; anyone raised by that guy would become a blockhead.

    The woman: “What’s your name?”

Li Yu replied softly, “Li Yu.”

    The woman: “Li Yu?”

    Li Yu: “Mm.”

The woman: “A god from the West Sea, what brings you to this desolate North Sea?”

    Li Yu: “I…”

The woman: “And those injuries, how did you get them?”

    Li Yu: “…”

Seeing that she couldn’t answer, the woman smiled faintly. “It’s fine, everyone has their secrets. If you don’t want to talk about it, I won’t force you.”

    Li Yu was relieved.

She lowered her gaze, thought for a moment, then looked up at the woman and asked softly, “May I ask…are you…the ancient god, Qing Nü?”

The silver-haired woman looked at the tea in her cup and replied calmly, “Mm.”

    She had been right!

Qing Nü, who became the Heavenly Demon, had been living in the North Sea all along!

    Chapter 75: A Puppy

What was this Jinxu Gui? (T/N:I’ll keep its name as the artifact “Jinxu Gui”. Gui means ‘sundial’ .)

    <Sundial>

History of Sundials - First Time Keeping Device

Si Qinglan saw the confusion in Li Yu’s eyes.

She sighed, looked at the green jade sundial in Li Yu’s hand, and recounted a story from a distant past, a past beyond their reach.

It was said that in ancient times, the God of Time, Shuhu, succumbed to his inner demons and, as his soul dissipated, his uncontrolled power scattered throughout the Three Realms.

The world was plunged into temporal chaos.

Day and night became erratic, the seasons disordered.

Extreme heat and extreme cold could last for a fleeting moment or an eternity.

And that wasn’t the worst of it.

It was said that during that time, one could inadvertently slip into the cracks of time.

People would lose their loved ones without warning.

And even if they were reunited, years, even centuries, might have passed.

And sometimes, cherished memories would dissipate like smoke, like rain falling on barren land, forgotten.

Like insignificant dust motes, carried away by the wind.

There was also a legend that said that at the turning of the tides, if one gazed at the water, they might glimpse the future or the past.

But these glimpses weren’t always true.

Because in a distorted timeline, everything was subject to change.

With the laws of time broken, the Three Realms suffered.

To restore order, the gods gathered Shuhu’s scattered power, refined it with heavenly fire for a hundred years, and from the chaotic ruins, forged the Jinxu Gui, an artifact capable of restoring the laws of time.

“The Jinxu Gui contains the power of Shuhu, the God of Time. With enough spiritual energy, its wielder can not only stop, slow down, or accelerate time, but also glimpse the past and the future.” Si Qinglan frowned. “But such power is incredibly difficult to control. A single misstep can disrupt cause and effect, altering the course of destiny…”

Her expression was serious. “This is defying the heavens; no one knows the price.”

Li Yu thought for a moment. “So…I can use it to see what happened four thousand years ago?”

“Li Yu, it’s too dangerous!” Si Qinglan said anxiously. “Even if you’re incredibly careful, you can’t guarantee you won’t disrupt anything… Besides, looking back four thousand years is incredibly difficult! You might get lost in the cracks of time, unable to find your way back!”

    “…”

【The host needn’t worry about that. Navigation can be left to the system!】

Li Yu paused, then said softly, “Si Qinglan, I won’t get lost.”

    Si Qinglan: “…”

Li Yu: “Disrupting cause and effect, defying the heavens, if it can prevent this disaster, I don’t care about the price.”

Si Qinglan: “Do you even understand what you’re saying?”

    Li Yu: “I do.”

    Si Qinglan: “…”

The final mission had a time limit; there was no time for recuperation or preparation.

In her current state, trying to rescue Mu Tao from Weisheng Xuanzhu was a long shot; she might as well try and hope for the best.

Since this artifact was recommended by the system, even if it was risky, there should be a way to use it safely.

This was her only chance to save Mu Tao, prevent the Heavenly Demon’s revival, and complete her mission.

She had to try, no matter the risks.

But she had to convince Si Qinglan first.

So, she asked, “Si Qinglan, why do you think disrupting cause and effect, altering fate, is such a serious matter?”

“Because it makes everything unpredictable.” Si Qinglan said seriously. “Everything in this world is governed by cause and effect, destiny.”

“It was because Weisheng Xuanzhu casually altered the fate of a mortal woman that the human realm, peaceful for over four thousand years, was suddenly plunged into chaos three hundred years ago.” She continued, “Even changing the future has such severe consequences. If you use the Jinxu Gui to tamper with the past, the results could be catastrophic!”

“Li Yu, you can’t bear such a burden, no one can…” Si Qinglan tried to persuade her.

“Then who can bear the consequences of the Heavenly Demon’s revival?” Li Yu retorted.

    Si Qinglan was speechless.

Li Yu: “Does the human realm truly have the strength to face the Heavenly Demon now?”

    Si Qinglan: “…”

Li Yu: “If the Heavenly Demon’s revival is the destined fate of the human realm, then why can’t it be changed? Why can’t this fate be altered?”

Si Qinglan lowered her gaze, lost in thought.

“Speaking of defying the heavens, hasn’t Weisheng Xuanzhu already done that?” Li Yu frowned. “He plotted and schemed, disrupted cause and effect, altered destinies, and if no one stops him, he will succeed.”

“Only the fate everyone accepts is a fate worth following!” Li Yu said, her voice calm, yet firm. “If someone tries to control it, and no one resists, then fate becomes their plaything.”

She didn’t care about the Dao of immortals.

She only knew that she had to save Mu Tao, and it wasn’t just about completing the mission.

“Si Qinglan…” Li Yu sighed. “You always talk about cause and effect, destiny, the price of actions, always seeming so rational—but aren’t we…paying the price for our past choices right now?”

    “…”

“When you decided to take in the Demon Bone, how did these concerns about cause and effect, destiny, and consequences lose to a moment of compassion?” Li Yu looked at Si Qinglan, her tone both playful and genuinely curious.

    “…”

“I’m already paying the price, look at my current state.” Li Yu smiled nonchalantly. “A little more…won’t make much difference… I don’t have much left to lose anyway.”

    “…”

“Just let me try,” she whispered. “I know my limits; I won’t be reckless.”

Si Qinglan looked up, a strange glint in her misty green eyes.

She stared at Li Yu in silence, as if trying to see through her.

    But she couldn’t.

She sighed deeply, a mixture of resignation and helplessness in her smile.

Si Qinglan: “I can’t argue with you.”

    Li Yu: “…”

Si Qinglan: “But with your current strength, activating the Jinxu Gui…isn’t that a bit too much?”

Li Yu: “It should be fine.”

The system was willing to assist; what was there to be afraid of?

Si Qinglan shook her head. “It is too much, you need my help.”

Li Yu was surprised. “Won’t you be strained?”

“Of course, incredibly strained!” Si Qinglan said, a smile appearing in her eyes. “But two people being strained is better than one, right? This is the Jinxu Gui; we can’t afford any mistakes!”

“Si Qinglan…you can stay out of this…”

“Weren’t you just saying we’re all paying the price for our past choices?” Si Qinglan retorted with a smile. “I was the one who brought the Demon Bone to Mount Chao Yao; how can I stay out of this?”

She stood up, brushed the dust off her clothes, and extended her hand towards Li Yu. “Come on, use my spiritual energy first.”

Li Yu took her hand and stood up, asking casually, “Why yours first?”

Si Qinglan: “This path isn’t easy. I’m worried you’ll have the strength to go, but not to return.”

    Li Yu: “…”

Si Qinglan: “Both the human realm and the Demon Realm are in chaos now. I can guard things here, but if something goes wrong, I won’t be able to help you. You need to conserve your strength for the return journey.”

Li Yu took a deep breath and stopped arguing, then whispered, “Thank you, Si Qinglan.”

Si Qinglan seemed to freeze, then chuckled wryly. “Li Yu, you’ve caused me so much trouble, and all you ever say is ‘thank you’—your thanks are worthless.”

Li Yu opened her mouth but couldn’t respond.

Si Qinglan: “This time…make them worth something! If you can pull this off, I’ll forget about all the spiritual herbs and elixirs you owe me!”

She hadn’t been keeping track anyway, had she?

Li Yu thought this, a smile appearing on her face.

Si Qinglan rolled her eyes, not bothering to argue, and erected a barrier around them.

She then turned to Li Yu and said seriously, “After this is over, I also have some questions for you. And you better answer them truthfully.”

Li Yu smiled and nodded. “I’ll tell you everything.”

“Then stop wasting time.” Si Qinglan gestured towards the Jinxu Gui and said playfully, “Let’s go, do you need me to carry you?”

Li Yu, no longer hesitating, activated the Jinxu Gui with the system’s assistance.

Si Qinglan’s spiritual energy flowed into her, like a gentle wind, a flowing stream, guided by Li Yu, all of it pouring into the sundial.

The green jade sundial lifted from her palm and floated into the air, expanding to an enormous size.

Its blue light intensified as the shadow of the gnomon moved in reverse.

The dial, its markings blurred, spun rapidly, a kaleidoscope of colors.

She found herself amidst a vast starry sky.

A star streaked past her, and she felt the weight of millennia, her heart aching, her very soul trembling.

This wasn’t just a starry sky, she thought.

It was the condensed light of countless years, lingering in this void.

Some of it flowed beneath her feet, forming a river, some floated above, transforming into stars.

A faint golden light guided her.

The Jinxu Gui was in her hand, a continuous flow of spiritual energy within her.

She walked along the river of stars, each step creating ripples in time.

A cool breeze, as if trying to stop her.

    She continued walking, unfazed.

The breeze turned into a biting wind, howling and threatening to consume her.

It wasn’t just wind; it was the price of traveling through time.

The further she went, the more difficult it became.

Si Qinglan had been right; this path wasn’t easy, but she couldn’t give up.

She strengthened her protective aura and, following the system’s guidance, continued walking against the biting wind,

The passing stars, shattering against her clothes, leaving behind fleeting images of the past.

Dynasties rose and fell, mountains crumbled and valleys formed, in the blink of an eye.

The stars turned into sharp blades, tearing at her flesh, her very soul.

The river of stars beneath her feet became thorns, drawing blood.

The icy wind thinned her protective aura, almost tearing it apart.

Exhaustion, like the wind, threatened to consume her.

    Blood stained her tattered robes.

Her legs, numb with pain, still carried her forward, each step a struggle.

She couldn’t tell which pain was greater, this, or severing the Harmony Bells.

She didn’t know how much longer she had to walk, nor what she was even thinking.

    How strange…

    She hadn’t even considered stopping.

Why was she so determined to walk this path?

    She didn’t understand.

Or perhaps, the pain had clouded her mind.

She could feel her consciousness fading, yet she couldn’t imagine the consequences of collapsing here. She just stared at the faint golden light, gritting her teeth, and continued walking,

Until her vision blurred, the guiding light almost disappearing.

The vast starry sky turned into a dizzying blur, engulfing her…

She closed her eyes and walked on, guided by instinct.

Just before her last shred of consciousness faded, she smelled the salty scent of the sea.

She was on the ship leaving the mountain, the sea breeze a cool caress.

A young girl’s sweet voice, accompanied by the chiming of silver bells, echoed behind her.

She turned and saw a flash of red.

Beneath the blazing sun, they stood side by side, looking out at the ocean.

She was slightly afraid, but the little girl seemed to love it.

The little girl in red, always flitting around her.

Even the mountain’s wind and snow couldn’t stop her.

    Today’s meal was a feast.

The little girl was celebrating learning her first spell.

The little girl was building another snowman in the courtyard.

She seemed to enjoy creating a “mini-me” to guard the place.

Another winter, the world seemingly abandoning them.

The little girl, without a spatial pouch yet, carried her small bundle on her thin shoulders.

They traveled together, hiding and running,

    Neither complaining.

It was the little girl’s first time celebrating the human New Year.

She listened to the firecrackers, watched the fireworks, her eyes filled with a joy she had never known.

If only she could show her more of the human world, Li Yu thought.

Take her through the seasons, show her how humans celebrated.

    “Master!”

    “Master~~”

    “Master…”

The familiar calls echoed in her ears.

“Master, the noodles you wanted are ready!”

    “…”

    That wasn’t right.

She had left and never returned.

    This…was a dream…

A weight pressed against her chest, a warm, heavy weight.

Something was touching her face, warm and rough, wet, rubbing against her cheek.

It tickled, and she instinctively tried to move away, but the sensation followed, brushing against her eyelids—a fleeting warmth, followed by a cool touch.

She opened her eyes and saw a small, gray puppy licking her face with its pink tongue.

A cold drop of water landed on her cheek, startling her.

The puppy, also startled, stopped licking and tilted its head, staring at her with its round eyes.

    Li Yu swallowed nervously.

The coolness on her cheek, where the puppy had licked her, slowly brought her back to reality.

    Where was she?

She was in bed, covered by a blanket, pale curtains tied to the bedposts, motionless in the still air.

A subtle, pleasant fragrance filled the room.

It was nighttime, snow falling heavily outside, the sky dark.

The room was warm, clearly protected by a spiritual barrier.

Although there were no candles, the room wasn’t dark, bathed in a soft, white light, like moonlight.

The puppy, seeing her awake, stopped licking and retreated, its head resting on its paws, its gaze averted.

“You…” she started, and the puppy, as if trying to avoid responsibility, jumped off the bed.

It hid under the table, its tail between its legs, its ears drooping, seemingly afraid, yet its round eyes still watching her intently.

Li Yu could sense spiritual energy from the puppy; it was a demon.

She sat up, looking down at herself.

Her clothes had been changed, and her wounds were bandaged, seemingly healed with spiritual energy.

Where had the Jinxu Gui brought her?

    And who saved her?

Did she still have the strength to continue her journey to four thousand years ago?

Her head was still spinning, unable to think clearly, she decided to first figure out where she was.

She looked at the puppy and asked softly, “You can understand me, right?”

The puppy blinked, whimpered softly, and nodded.

    Li Yu: “Where am I?”

The puppy barked, seemingly answering, but she didn’t understand dog language.

She had to rephrase her question.

Li Yu: “You’re not the one who saved me, right? Do you have a master?”

The puppy nodded, its tail wagging slightly beneath the table.

Li Yu: “Are you afraid of me?”

The puppy blinked, neither nodding nor shaking its head, just peeking out from under the table, its ears no longer drooping.

Li Yu smiled and, ignoring her aching body, got out of bed and walked over to the table.

Supporting herself against the edge, she looked down at the puppy. “What are you hiding from?”

The puppy whimpered softly, not answering.

Li Yu, wincing slightly, crouched down and reached out towards the puppy. Seeing that it didn’t flinch, she gently patted its head.

She didn’t know why, but this little puppy made her heart melt. Even being licked all over her face couldn’t dampen her affection.

She stroked the puppy’s soft fur behind its ears. “Little puppy,” she coaxed gently, “Can you take me to your master?”

The puppy nodded and was about to come out from under the table when the door creaked open, letting in a gust of wind and snow.

Li Yu looked up and froze, her heart sinking, her breath catching in her throat.

She saw a pair of eyes, as dark as night, and her body stiffened.

But he didn’t seem to recognize her, just walked in, closed the door, bringing with him the chill of the wind and snow, and placed a tray with a bowl of medicine on the table.

“Since you’re awake, drink your medicine.” He glanced at the puppy under the table. “Why are you here again? Licking people again?”

The puppy emerged from under the table, its tail between its legs, and sat down at his feet, its ears drooping, whimpering softly, like a child who had done something wrong.

“Didn’t I tell you, you have to ask for permission first?”

The puppy whined and lay down, its paws kicking the air in protest.

He seemed exasperated with the puppy and sighed, then looked up at Li Yu. “I apologize, it’s still young, doesn’t understand these things. Did it bother you?”

    He was…being polite…?

    This scene was unexpected.

“No, it’s fine…” she replied instinctively.

Then, after a long moment, it finally dawned on her—she might be in the right place, at the right time.

“Where am I?” she asked tentatively.

    “The North Sea.”

So, it was the North Sea.

Weisheng Xuanzhu’s gaze was polite, unfamiliar, he clearly didn’t recognize her.

But according to the story, he had known “Li Yu” before his hibernation, which had lasted over a thousand years. He had even come looking for her immediately after waking up.

    What was going on?

Had she gone too far back in time?

“You should drink your medicine,” he suddenly said.

“…Oh!” Li Yu stood up, supporting herself against the table, and looked at the dark liquid in the bowl, a wave of resistance rising within her. “I’m not a mortal; I can heal myself with spiritual energy. Do I really have to drink this?”

“Your spiritual energy is depleted, and you’ve been exposed to the cold. If you don’t want any lasting effects, it’s best to drink it.” He said. “This isn’t ordinary medicine; it will greatly aid your recovery.”

…She had vowed to never drink Chinese medicine again.

Forget it, she had risked her life, what was a little medicine?

Li Yu picked up the bowl, took a deep breath, and was about to down it in one gulp.

But the bitter smell made her recoil.

“N, no, I…I’ll drink it later.”

She saw the man and the puppy looking at her expectantly, as if they wouldn’t leave until she finished the medicine. Her hand, holding the bowl, froze.

Fine, she’d drink it, this body needed to recover.

Li Yu gritted her teeth and forced herself to drink the medicine.

She, who wouldn’t even drink slightly bitter powdered medicine in her past life, was now drinking Chinese medicine!

    So bitter!!!

Couldn’t they offer a piece of candy to cleanse her palate?

She put down the bowl, her spirit crushed, and the puppy circled her legs, its fluffy tail wagging, as if in praise.

Li Yu couldn’t help but pat its head. “Are you…praising me?”

The puppy nodded and licked her hand.

Li Yu: “Your puppy is quite cute.”

    Weisheng Xuanzhu: “It’s a wolf.”

    Li Yu: “…?”

The little wolf pup barked and gently nibbled her finger.

    Chapter 74: 【Final Mission Activated—】

Such a brilliant starry sky could never belong to the Demon Realm.

Most demons had never been to the human realm; they had never seen the moon or the stars.

Countless demons looked up at the suddenly appearing stars, their eyes filled with shock and awe.

Beneath the starry sky, wisps of resentment gathered, forming a blood-red sea in the sky, threatening to engulf the starlight.

Li Yu’s heart sank, and she rushed towards the source of the resentment.

As the resentment intensified, the stars shifted and swirled, forming a brilliant nebula.

The nebula, as if drawn by an invisible force, began to spin.

Even the sea of resentment was pulled into the vortex, swirling beneath the nebula.

It resembled the scene they had witnessed in the City of the Undying, although smaller in scale, it felt far more oppressive.

Because the stars weren’t just hanging in the sky, they were falling, like snowflakes, through the swirling resentment, from the heart of the nebula.

Not just above, but all around, seemingly within reach.

They spun and danced, a breathtaking spectacle of cosmic proportions.

As the starlight swirled, the vortex seemed to devour the world.

The resentment, caught in the starlight, became threads of red.

Dark lights surged towards the vortex, twisting and merging with it, becoming part of the swirling mass.

Li Yu felt the world around her distorting, bending under the vortex’s pull.

    Suddenly, black flames erupted.

The resentment, the starlight, all consumed by the flames.

Black flames, blood-red clouds, and starlight, a grotesque painting against the distorted sky.

    A scene of impending doom.

Li Yu knew Mu Tao was making her last stand.

And it all happened in a flash.

She rushed forward, wanting to enter the vortex, but she couldn’t.

The swirling energy within was too powerful. With her limited strength, she couldn’t even see what was happening inside, let alone help Mu Tao.

Li Yu stood there, frozen, outside the vortex.

She felt like someone who couldn’t swim, caught in a raging storm, tossed around by the waves, unable to reach the shore.

“Exalted God!” Xiang Hanyu landed beside her, panic in her voice. “I just received a message from Mu Tao, but before I could arrive, these stars appeared… What’s happening? Why is the black-robed figure in the Demon Realm?!”

Li Yu looked at the vortex. “Can you get inside?”

Xiang Hanyu looked at the swirling mass of energy, then shook her head slowly after a moment of silence.

Yan Buqiu, arriving shortly after, also frowned.

“The clash between those two powers is incredibly strong; it has created a barrier.” Yan Buqiu said. “Not only can we not enter, but any external force will just be absorbed into the vortex…”

“It’s similar to the formation in the City of the Undying, but far more complex,” Xiang Hanyu said in a low voice. “To break it, we need a much stronger force to separate the two powers within, or…”

    Li Yu: “Or?”

Yan Buqiu: “Or…one of the powers dissipates.”

Xiang Hanyu’s voice was filled with anxiety. “We don’t know what’s happening inside. Will Mu Tao be alright…?”

    Li Yu: “…”

Xiang Hanyu and Yan Buqiu continued talking, but their voices became a distant murmur, fading from Li Yu’s awareness.

    She had been too naive…

Such power, a preemptive formation wouldn’t be enough to contain it.

—At least, not something Xiang Hanyu could create.

And it happened so quickly; they didn’t have time to prepare.

    She couldn’t describe her feelings.

Her heart was burning with anxiety, yet beneath the flames, a strange calmness, a numbness.

A sense of helplessness, like sinking into quicksand, despair threatening to freeze her.

    Yet, she could still think.

Perhaps because she had always known this day might come, just unwilling to face it.

In her chaotic thoughts, she had even considered the possibility of Weisheng Xuanzhu already being in the Demon Realm, waiting for the curse to be transferred.

So, should she be grateful that the stars didn’t appear immediately, that he at least had some decency,

That he hadn’t been lurking in the shadows like a rat,

Waiting to ambush them in their wedding chamber, knock Mu Tao unconscious, and take her away?

He had even given them some time…for their wedding night!

    How…considerate of him.

Li Yu felt a hysterical laugh rising in her throat.

She now understood why the author abandoned the original outline. With a boss of this level, how could the protagonists possibly win?

Surely not by appealing to his conscience?

And he might not even be the final boss!

The Heavenly Demon he wanted to revive was, according to the novel’s setting, the most powerful demon in existence.

Even Mu Tao, with just the Demon Bone, possessed world-destroying power.

If the Heavenly Demon was truly revived, with the current state of the human realm, this world would likely be destroyed.

The system had said its mission was to help her save this world.

And her choices so far had been guided by the system.

Even when the curse was transferred to Mu Tao, the system hadn’t warned her.

So, this wasn’t the end, perhaps just a necessary step towards the next stage of the main storyline.

She could still do something, she had to…

But what could she do to turn the tide?

Li Yu forced herself to calm down, recalling every detail since arriving here, fearing she had missed a crucial clue.

    Just then, the system spoke.

【Attention, Host, the final mission is about to begin!】

    The final mission…

Li Yu froze, then saw the black flames within the vortex gradually extinguishing, the resentment dissipating.

The blood-red swirl began to shrink.

Within seconds, only the dreamlike nebula remained in the sky.

As if the resentment and the black flames had never existed.

The falling stars, no longer swirling, froze in place, as if time itself had stopped.

The vortex was gone, and the distorting barrier disappeared along with it.

Li Yu finally saw Mu Tao.

The slender girl in red, trapped in the starlight, motionless, unconscious.

Weisheng Xuanzhu hovered beside her, his dark eyes fixed on Li Yu.

    His gaze, usually emotionless,

    Now held a flicker of…hesitation.

It wasn’t her imagination; she was almost certain that he wasn’t completely resolute.

“Do you…have to revive the Heavenly Demon?” Li Yu couldn’t help but ask.

They were far apart, her voice soft, but she knew he could hear her.

He just stared at her, his usually unreadable eyes filled with an unsettling intensity, as if trying to see through her.

But he didn’t answer, just as she had never answered his questions.

He took Mu Tao and left, no one able to stop him.

Li Yu instinctively tried to follow but was held back by the lingering starlight.

    “Exalted God!”

Xiang Hanyu and Yan Buqiu rushed forward, their spiritual energy swirling as they tried to break the starlight cage.

Black and white lights flickered before her eyes.

But the figure, carried away by the starlight, gradually disappeared from view.

    【Final Mission Activated—】

【Mission Objective: Rescue the protagonist, Mu Tao, and prevent the revival of the Heavenly Demon!】

    【Mission Location: North Sea Abyss!】

    【Time Limit: Five days!】

【The success or failure of this mission depends entirely on the host’s choices. The system cannot interfere but will provide assistance as needed.】

So this was her final mission…

So, in the author’s original outline, the antagonist, after plotting for over three thousand years, weakening the original owner, severing the connection to the Heavenly Realm, and finally obtaining both the demonic soul and the Demon Bone, went to the place where the Heavenly Demon perished, to revive it.

The reason the system prevented her from explaining earlier was because “Mu Tao being cursed” was a necessary part of the final arc.

Li Yu looked up at the dissipating nebula, a bitter smile on her face.

If you had told me earlier, I wouldn’t have…

【If the system told you earlier, would you have been able to willingly hurt the protagonist again?】

    “…”

【The system detected your lingering guilt and internal conflict regarding the previous deception—This would greatly affect your judgment and decision-making.】

    “…”

【Considering the inevitability of this plot point, the system decided to minimize your emotional distress by using “external force” to lessen your guilt.】

“So, I should be thanking you?”

【You’re welcome. Assisting the host is the system’s duty!】

    “I’m not thanking you.”

The system was silent for a moment, then said,

    【Assistance for [Jinxu Gui] unlocked.】

    The world-protecting artifact, Jinxu Gui?

Unlocking its assistance now, was this the author’s intended solution?

Before Li Yu could think further, a pale green light gently dissolved the starlight cage.

She saw Si Qinglan’s concerned face.

    Xiang Hanyu: “Qingxuan Revered One!”

Si Qinglan’s brow was furrowed, her eyes filled with anxiety. “You must already know, Weisheng Xuanzhu is the black-robed figure. He wants to revive the Heavenly Demon—Now that he has both the demonic soul and the Demon Bone, we have to stop him!”

    Xiang Hanyu was shocked.

The person who took Mu Tao did indeed wield the black-robed figure’s stellar power.

She had known about his plan to revive the Heavenly Demon, but she never imagined it was Lingyao Revered One—Weisheng Xuanzhu, the Kun Peng Monarch of the North Sea.

“How could this be…” Xiang Hanyu couldn’t believe it. “He’s…he guarded the Upper Spirit Lamp for over three thousand years…”

Yan Buqiu shook her head and sighed.

“Why are you surprised?” Si Qinglan retorted. “Four thousand years ago, the ancient god who released the Heavenly Demon Soul Seed and fell into darkness in the North Sea Abyss…wasn’t he also the guardian of the Upper Spirit Lamp?”

    Xiang Hanyu: “…”

Four thousand years ago, the North Sea Abyss…

That fallen god…was also the guardian of the Upper Spirit Lamp?

Li Yu felt like she had grasped something important.

She grabbed Si Qinglan’s wrist. “Come with me!”

“Wh…” Before Si Qinglan could finish, Li Yu pulled her to a deserted corner. “What are you doing? Shouldn’t we be chasing after them?”

Li Yu: “Can you defeat him?”

Si Qinglan opened her mouth, then after a long moment, said, “Are you saying…we’re just going to…let this happen?”

“He took Mu Tao too, she’s the perfect vessel for the Heavenly Demon. Once the seal on the Lamp is broken, the Soul Seed will devour her, she’ll lose her consciousness!” Si Qinglan looked at Li Yu, her eyes filled with confusion. “Are you…just going to…ignore this?”

She frowned. “If you don’t stop him, when you see her again, she won’t be Mu Tao anymore, but the Heavenly Demon.”

Li Yu: “I will save her. That’s why I’m here.”

    Si Qinglan: “…”

Li Yu looked down at the Netherbloom Flowers blooming all around them.

She took a deep breath and said softly, “Si Qinglan, what I’m about to ask…you might find it strange, but please tell me everything you know about it.”

Si Qinglan looked confused but didn’t ask any further questions, just waited patiently.

Li Yu: “What exactly…happened in the North Sea four thousand years ago?”

    Si Qinglan: “You…”

Li Yu: “Just tell me everything you know, don’t ask anything, I can’t give you any answers.”

    【Warning! Warning!】

    【The host’s character compatibility is rapidly decreasing!】

Li Yu frowned and said again, “Si Qinglan, this isn’t the time for other matters! We have to find a way to stop the Heavenly Demon’s revival!”

Si Qinglan: “Why are you asking me this?”

    【Character Compatibility: 82%!】

“Because Weisheng Xuanzhu wants to know.” Li Yu said seriously. “He’s trying to revive the Heavenly Demon…to get an answer.”

    “What answer…”

    【Character Compatibility: 69%!】

“I don’t know,” Li Yu said with a wry smile. “If I knew, I would have told him already.”

    Si Qinglan’s confusion deepened.

    【Character Compatibility: 54%!】

“He kept asking me the same question!”

“He asked me if I was still unwilling to tell him the truth about what happened back then!”

“He asked me what exactly happened in the North Sea four thousand years ago!”

Li Yu’s voice rose with agitation. “Even before he sealed my consciousness, he was still asking me about what happened back then!”

    Si Qinglan: “…”

“I can see…it’s his obsession!” Li Yu said. “We have to find the answer he wants, only then can we convince him to stop!”

Her eyes reddened, and she shook her head helplessly. “But I don’t know, I truly don’t know, I can’t answer his questions…”

    Si Qinglan: “…”

    【Character Compatibility: 46%!】

“I’ve been thinking, if I had been able to give him an answer back then, perhaps everything would have been different.” Li Yu looked at Si Qinglan, her gaze unwavering. “Perhaps…it’s not too late. Can you…put aside your doubts and help me…?”

    “…”

“After we find the answer, I’ll tell you everything you want to know.”

    “…”

“Si Qinglan, right now, your doubts are insignificant compared to the revival of the Heavenly Demon.”

The drop in her compatibility stopped.

    【Character Compatibility: 33%!】

Si Qinglan’s breath seemed to catch.

She was silent for a long time, then sighed and sat down against a nearby tree.

“I wasn’t there four thousand years ago… All I know is…common knowledge.” She muttered. “Even if I tell you everything, it won’t be the answer you want.”

Li Yu: “Just tell me everything you know, that’s all I’m asking.”

She had a suspicion, and perhaps with more information, she would know what to do.

Si Qinglan thought for a moment, then said softly, “Four thousand years ago, the human realm…it was practically drowning in resentment.”

“Demonic calamities were rampant, not just ordinary people, but even the immortal sects were struggling, unable to do anything but watch as the resentment deepened.”

“With so much resentment in the world, everyone knew that the Heavenly Demon’s revival was inevitable, a calamity waiting to befall the Three Realms. Everyone lived in fear.”

“And even more tragically, during the last revival, there were thirteen ancient gods to suppress it—but this time, only two remained, both nearing the end of their ‘burning candle’ phase.”

“One of them was the goddess Yetan, who entrusted the Upper Spirit Lamp and the Jinxu Gui to you before her soul dissipated.” Si Qinglan sighed. “And the other…was the guardian of the Upper Spirit Lamp, unwilling to accept his fate, who sought to control the Heavenly Demon’s power and achieve immortality, later known as the previous Heavenly Demon—the fallen god, Qing Nü.”

Si Qinglan said that the Upper Spirit Lamp was an ancient artifact created to seal the Heavenly Demon, and its guardians were always the most powerful gods in existence; Qing Nü was no exception.

But as the other ancient gods faded, Qing Nü also disappeared.

No one knew where she went, she simply vanished along with the Upper Spirit Lamp.

“Disappeared…” Li Yu hugged her knees.

“Yes, there was no trace of her anywhere. With the resentment in the human realm intensifying, and the guardian of the Upper Spirit Lamp nowhere to be found, many assumed she had been burned out, her soul dissipated.” Si Qinglan’s voice was filled with emotion. “But she hadn’t died, just…when she reappeared, she was already the fallen god, consumed by the Heavenly Demon’s power, her mind lost.”

“I understand,” Li Yu said, sighing softly. “He wants to revive the Heavenly Demon; breaking the seal on the Upper Spirit Lamp would be enough, so if he wants the Demon Bone…it must be to…find her.”

Si Qinglan pondered this, then seemed to understand.

She looked up at Li Yu. “Are you saying…Qing Nü was in the North Sea all those years she was missing?”

Li Yu: “I’m not sure, but…perhaps.”

    Si Qinglan: “…”

Li Yu: “Perhaps…he wants to know why Qing Nü became the Heavenly Demon.”

Si Qinglan: “Everyone saw what happened. She broke the seal on the Upper Spirit Lamp, absorbed the Heavenly Demon Soul Seed, and fell into darkness, using the resentment in the world to become the Heavenly Demon…”

Li Yu: “But that’s not the answer he wants.”

Si Qinglan frowned. “…Then why ask you?”

Li Yu: “Perhaps…because I was there.”

Si Qinglan: “If that’s why, then your answer is the one he least wants to hear.”

    Li Yu: “…”

Si Qinglan asked again, “Then why does he keep asking you?”

    Li Yu: “…”

Si Qinglan: “Many people were there that day, including terrestrial immortals. Why does he only ask you? Why is he so certain you lied? And why does he think you know something others don’t?”

    Li Yu: “…”

Si Qinglan: “There must be a reason. If you don’t remember anything, how will you find the answer?”

Li Yu shook her head, her thoughts in disarray.

How could she possibly know the answer?

She didn’t have any of the original owner’s memories…

    【Assistance for [Jinxu Gui] unlocked.】

Was this a hint to use the artifact?

Li Yu hesitated, then slowly raised her hands.

A blue light flickered, and the green jade sundial materialized in her palm.

Si Qinglan looked surprised. “The Jinxu Gui?”

Li Yu nodded, staring at the sundial, confused.

What was this thing even for?

    She activated the system assistance.

The next second, her spiritual energy flowed into the sundial.

Si Qinglan’s expression changed drastically, and she grabbed Li Yu’s arm, extinguishing the light. “Li Yu, are you crazy?! You want to activate the Jinxu Gui?!”

    Li Yu: “Can’t I?”

Si Qinglan took a deep breath, her voice rising in anger. “NO!!!”

    Li Yu: “…”

Such a strong reaction, was this thing dangerous?

  • Devilish Disciple [Transmigration] 73

Chapter 73: What Was Dual Cultivation? She Had No Idea.

The lightless Demon Realm made it difficult to tell the time.

Their intertwined hair, like the indistinguishable day and night in the dimly lit room.

    Li Yu was exhausted.

Her mind foggy, her body numb, no longer feeling quite like her own, yet Mu Tao still wouldn’t let her rest.

The candles in the room had burned down, a perfect time for sleep, yet Mu Tao insisted on relighting them with her spiritual energy.

Just to see Li Yu’s face.

Li Yu repeatedly turned away, only to be gently drawn back by a kiss.

Mu Tao seemed to enjoy seeing her master like this, her hair disheveled, sweat glistening on her skin, her cheeks flushed, her eyes hazy.

She could feel her master’s every breath, rapid and hot, her body trembling beneath her.

Her master’s beautiful hands, pushing against her, a mixture of resistance and surrender.

She liked to gently nibble on those slender fingers, watching the red string on her wrist sway as she tried to pull away.

The soft chiming of the bells made her heart race.

Sometimes, her master, seemingly overwhelmed, would cling to her, seeking support.

But then, realizing this only intensified the intimacy, she would give up and lie still.

    Whether active or passive,

Mu Tao couldn’t resist that soft, yielding touch.

There was no better master in the world, she thought.

Even her master’s soft moans and pleas were intoxicating.

She loved this closeness, this intimacy that belonged only to her.

But her master was weak; she didn’t want to exhaust her.

    She would let her rest.

But these moments of rest were always brief.

She couldn’t help herself; holding her master like this, she always wanted more.

And once she started, she couldn’t stop, even when her master frowned and pushed her away, she would use a spell to restrain her wrists and continue.

“Mu Tao…” Li Yu’s mind, hazy and confused, was filled with a single thought.

This little glutton, couldn’t she ever get enough?

Just like when they ate together, she wouldn’t stop until everything was gone.

But she, Li Yu, wasn’t a dish to be devoured.

“What time is it…” she whispered.

“What did you say, Master?” Mu Tao gently nibbled her ear.

“I said…what time is it…” Li Yu asked again, “Don’t you…want to rest?”

Mu Tao seemed to consider this, then hummed softly and whispered against her ear, “I don’t know.”

Only answering the first part of the question, ignoring the second.

She then nuzzled against Li Yu’s neck, licking the unhealed wound.

    “…”

    It was starting again—

This time, Mu Tao lit a few more candles, especially those near the bed.

    The dim room brightened.

The warm, yellow light, filtering through the red bed curtains, illuminated Li Yu, making her look like dew-kissed petals, fragile yet tempting.

These unrestrained caresses turned Li Yu’s breaths into soft moans.

    Intoxicatingly beautiful.

Her master, though perfect, was still too fragile.

Bruises, marks of her lost control, marred that pristine white skin, the colors darkening with time.

Mu Tao felt that someone as perfect as her master shouldn’t be marked by such imperfections.

    —It was…unsightly.

But these marks, her marks, were like red plum blossoms on snow, alluring, captivating.

She couldn’t resist tasting them, savoring the slight tremors they elicited.

Her master seemed to have given up resisting, which made her slightly less interested.

“Master, do you want to try dual cultivation? It will help you recover faster,” she whispered, leaning against Li Yu.

    Li Yu shook her head.

What was dual cultivation? She had no idea.

Besides, with the curse still in her body, how could she…?

Li Yu: “You shouldn’t use your spiritual energy…”

Mu Tao: “Are you worried about me, Master?”

    Li Yu: “Mm…”

Mu Tao nuzzled her ear playfully. “Let’s try it. If it’s beneficial for you, Master, I’m not afraid of the pain.”

Li Yu: “But I’m so tired…”

Mu Tao chuckled softly. “I’ll control the technique, Master. You just lie still and circulate your spiritual energy, it won’t be tiring.”

Li Yu couldn’t argue with her and sighed. “If it hurts, stop immediately.”

“Mm!” Mu Tao nuzzled her ear again.

She had studied dual cultivation techniques ever since her master first mentioned it.

It was simply the circulation and merging of two cultivators’ spiritual energies; one controlled the technique, and the other cooperated.

She had tested the curse poison; its backlash was proportional to the amount of spiritual energy used.

Dual cultivation didn’t require much; the backlash shouldn’t be severe.

If it could help her master recover faster, she was willing to endure the pain.

Thinking this, Mu Tao gathered her remaining clean spiritual energy and carefully entered Li Yu’s sea of consciousness as they became intimate.

For the first time, she saw that towering tree with its vast root system in the endless, dark sea.

The flickering candlelight was gone, replaced by the soft blue light emanating from the tree, like stars falling from the sky, like snowflakes gently landing on the earth.

They were together, beneath the tree, their bodies intertwined.

The sea beneath them, its surface like a mirror, reflecting their image.

They were within it, surrounded by it, yet they didn’t sink.

    It was just an illusion.

That pure spiritual energy, drawing in the soft blue light.

Their long hair, like ink in water, spread across the cool surface of the sea.

Mu Tao endured the slight backlash, controlling the dual cultivation technique, the blue light enveloping them.

Like a gentle stream, the spiritual energy flowed through Li Yu’s damaged meridians.

    Li Yu’s senses heightened.

Mu Tao’s movements clouded her already hazy mind, and she instinctively wrapped her arms around Mu Tao, her eyes unfocused.

    She couldn’t describe the sensation,

Her body both light and heavy, as if she could float away on the wind, yet also sink into an abyss.

She wasn’t sure if this was a normal part of dual cultivation, or if Mu Tao was using the technique incorrectly.

A gentle breeze, and she shivered.

Her vision blurred, but she still heard Mu Tao’s soft voice: “Master, don’t let your spiritual energy dissipate.”

How did she know if her spiritual energy was dissipating? She wasn’t even sure if she was conscious.

Suddenly, a deep kiss, stealing her breath, brought her back.

“Master, don’t let your spiritual energy dissipate,” Mu Tao repeated, her lips gently brushing against Li Yu’s forehead.

Her warm breath, a fleeting warmth against Li Yu’s skin, quickly turning cold.

Li Yu took a deep breath, trying to gather her dissipating spiritual energy.

She felt its flow within her again.

The clearer the flow, the more acutely aware she was of Mu Tao’s every touch, every movement.

Even the slightest friction between their skin sent shivers through her.

    Her mind drifted again,

    Only unconscious responses remained.

Li Yu’s spiritual energy dissipated completely, even her protective aura was gone.

Her body, exposed to the cold.

She shivered and instinctively snuggled closer to Mu Tao.

Sensing Li Yu’s lack of response, Mu Tao stopped the dual cultivation technique, withdrew from Li Yu’s sea of consciousness, and shielded them from the cold.

    Silence fell.

She looked at the jade-like figure in her arms, the emptiness within her heart slowly filling.

Mu Tao kissed Li Yu one last time.

Either afraid of Li Yu catching a cold, or afraid of losing control again, disturbing her sleep,

She reluctantly tucked Li Yu into the blanket and held her close.

Gazing at Li Yu’s flushed cheeks in the candlelight, she smiled faintly.

It was time to sleep, she thought.

The curse’s backlash had weakened her.

She would clean up the mess tomorrow.

When Li Yu woke up, the candles in the room had burned down.

The dim light made it difficult to tell the time, only the faint outline of a figure sleeping beside her visible.

Mu Tao, seemingly sensing her gaze, slowly opened her eyes.

After a brief exchange of glances, Mu Tao smiled faintly.

    “Master is awake.”

    “Mm.”

    “How…how was last night?”

    “…”

Li Yu didn’t know how to answer.

It wasn’t that she was embarrassed, just unsure what Mu Tao was asking.

Was it…about their intimacy, or the effects of dual cultivation?

If the former, she didn’t have much to say.

If the latter, she did feel that her previously blocked meridians were slightly clearer now.

She closed her eyes, checking her spiritual energy flow.

    It wasn’t her imagination.

    Her injuries had slightly improved.

Not significantly, but still faster than her usual self-cultivation.

So dual cultivation was actually useful…

As she was thinking this, Mu Tao sat up, straightened her clothes with a spell, and lit the room with spiritual fire.

Then, she gathered the scattered clothes from the floor with a flick of her wrist.

Looking at the torn fabric, Mu Tao glanced at Li Yu, a hint of guilt in her eyes.

“These are…unwearable,” she muttered, stating the obvious.

“I’m used to it,” Li Yu sighed, sitting up and pulling the blanket around her.

She felt unclean, beyond what a simple cleansing spell could fix. Even changing clothes now would just result in them getting dirty again.

Yesterday’s wedding attire seemed mostly undamaged; she could wear that for now.

Although heavy and cumbersome, it would be fine for a quick bath. She could change later.

As she reached for the red robes, the bed curtains fell around her.

Before she could react, Mu Tao pulled her out of the bed and wrapped her in the soft red silk.

Although translucent, the layers of silk, like a cocoon, completely enveloped her, restricting her movements.

Li Yu frowned. “What are you doing?”

Before she could even finish, Mu Tao lifted her into her arms.

“I’m taking Master for a bath,” Mu Tao said with a smile, carrying her out of the dim room.

As they left, Li Yu saw the Netherbloom Flowers outside glowing faintly.

    It must be early morning.

Although the sky was still dim, it was light enough to see.

Being carried like this, wrapped in silk, without any proper clothes, made her feel incredibly exposed.

Li Yu panicked. “Where are we going?”

If anyone saw her like this, she would die of embarrassment!

Mu Tao seemed to sense her concern. “Don’t worry, Master, this place is like Chaoxi Pond, no one besides us is allowed here.”

She quickened her pace, using a spell, and soon they arrived at a cold pool.

Mu Tao tilted her head. “The water is cold, should I warm it up, Master?”

The pool was large; warming it up would require a significant amount of spiritual energy.

Although it would be effortless for the current Mu Tao, with the curse in her body, even a simple spell would cause pain.

“Don’t bother, I have protective spiritual energy.” Li Yu shifted in Mu Tao’s arms. “Put me down.”

Mu Tao obediently placed her on the ground.

The red silk slipped from her body, and Li Yu, barefoot, carefully stepped into the pool.

The water was cold, but her protective spiritual energy shielded her from the chill.

It felt like swimming in an indoor pool in late autumn, a slight coolness, but not unbearable.

She would probably get used to it.

The water near the edge wasn’t deep, just reaching her chest when she sat down, her shoulders and neck exposed, allowing her to breathe easily.

Li Yu exhaled slowly and sat down.

Just as she did, Mu Tao also removed her clothes, her cheeks flushed, and entered the pool.

Looking at her blushing face, Li Yu had a bad feeling.

As expected, those restless hands reached for her.

“Mu Tao…” Li Yu gave her a look, hoping she would understand her silent refusal, her weariness.

Mu Tao bit her lip. “I’ll…wash your hair for you, Master!”

    Li Yu: “Fine.”

Washing her hair was better than…other things.

    Mu Tao’s face lit up.

She gently gathered Li Yu’s long, wet hair, her touch almost reverent, carefully washing and combing it.

Her fingers were so gentle that Li Yu thought, if only she were this gentle in bed.

Li Yu lowered her gaze, counting the bruises on her body as she washed.

A pair of arms wrapped around her waist from behind.

“I’m done, Master,” Mu Tao whispered against her ear.

That familiar, possessive warmth tickled Li Yu’s ear.

Li Yu knew Mu Tao wanted something more.

But she couldn’t; they had important matters to discuss. She couldn’t let this little glutton drain her energy!

“Mu Tao, we need to talk about the curse in your body, today.”

“Mm,” Mu Tao replied, her lips gently brushing against Li Yu’s earlobe.

Li Yu took a deep breath. “I’m talking about something serious, control yourself.”

    Mu Tao: “…”

Li Yu: “I told you yesterday, you have to obey me in all important matters.”

Mu Tao reluctantly pulled away, picking up a strand of Li Yu’s hair and playing with it, a dissatisfied look on her face.

Li Yu breathed a sigh of relief. “Weisheng Xuanzhu used me to set a trap for you. He wants the Demon Bone but is also wary of your current power.”

“Since he came up with this curse, he must be able to sense it when it’s transferred… Even if he can’t, the news of our marriage will surely reach him soon.” Li Yu frowned slightly. “He might already be on his way to the Demon Realm.”

    “Mm!” Mu Tao listened attentively.

“I don’t know his true strength, but what I saw before he revealed his identity was already…formidable…”

The day he destroyed the Heavenly Gate, he single-handedly intimidated all the immortal sects.

And he hadn’t even used that mysterious stellar power.

Perhaps the power he displayed was just the tip of the iceberg.

Mu Tao wasn’t the true Heavenly Demon, just a vessel for its power.

She was young and hadn’t had much time to master the Demon Bone’s power. Even without the curse, she might not be a match for Weisheng Xuanzhu.

Yet, he still chose the most cautious approach.

“Even Si Qinglan couldn’t detect that curse; his cultivation is unfathomable.” Li Yu’s voice was serious. “In your current state, you’re no match for him.”

Mu Tao’s eyes flickered, lost in thought.

“We should prepare a trap. Even if we can’t defeat him, we have to ensure our own safety.” Li Yu looked at Mu Tao seriously. “I don’t know how fast he can travel, but it’s probably not slow. We don’t have much time; we can’t waste it on other things.”

Mu Tao opened her mouth as if to say something, then hesitated.

Her brow furrowed slightly, a clear sign of displeasure.

Of course, she wasn’t displeased about not being able to touch Li Yu, but about being interrupted on their wedding night.

Li Yu, seeing the resentment in her eyes, couldn’t help but chuckle and gently kissed her forehead. “Alright, after this is over, you can do whatever you want.”

“To deal with him, ordinary formations and barriers won’t be enough.” Mu Tao frowned. “I don’t know much about formations, but Xiang Hanyu told me that the formation she used to trap you took three days to create…”

Li Yu: “Then we have to hurry!”

Mu Tao nodded and quickly got out of the water and dressed. “Master, you finish bathing, I’ll go and find Xiang Hanyu.”

    Li Yu: “Wait!”

    Mu Tao: “Huh?”

Li Yu: “Send some people to guard the entrance to the Demon Realm, to buy us some time.”

Mu Tao nodded vigorously. “I’ll go and arrange it, and also get you something to eat!”

Li Yu instinctively wanted to say that it wasn’t necessary, that they should focus on the task at hand.

But she had been hungry all day, and her stomach growled, overriding her better judgment. “Just something simple, a bowl of noodles will be fine.”

“Okay!” Mu Tao transformed into a black flame and vanished.

Li Yu quickly finished bathing, dressed, dried her hair with a spell, and returned to the dimly lit wedding chamber.

The first thing she saw was the scattered clothes, jewelry, and pearls on the floor.

Although she didn’t know if Mu Tao would bring anyone here, the thought of someone seeing this mess made her cheeks burn.

She quickly gathered the clothes and stuffed them under the bed,

Then collected the pearls and put them into her spatial pouch.

She breathed a sigh of relief,

Walked to the table, and sat down, nibbling on the leftover pastries.

The red silk decorations were still there, the burned-down candles had reformed, and even the wine pot had a red “double happiness” symbol.

Everything reminded her of last night.

And the memories brought back the lingering aches in her body.

She couldn’t let Mu Tao be so unrestrained anymore.

That girl had no sense of boundaries; she would have to talk to her about it later!

Li Yu thought this, suddenly feeling thirsty. But there was only the bitter wedding wine.

She stood up, intending to find some water.

As she left the room, the usually dark sky of the Demon Realm was…

    …filled with twinkling stars.

  • Devilish Disciple [Transmigration] 72

Chapter 72: The Sky Wasn’t Falling, Was It?

A brief silence fell upon the wedding chamber.

“I believe you!” Mu Tao grabbed Li Yu’s wrist,

Then, as if afraid of hurting her, loosened her grip slightly. “Master, I believe you!”

Her voice was soft, her eyes filled with an anxious plea.

The nuptial wine, her master had personally intertwined their arms and drunk it with her.

This was proof of her master’s willingness to marry her; how could she dismiss it so easily?

Li Yu: “Now you believe me.”

Mu Tao, her eyes filled with tears, didn’t dare speak.

Her mind raced with unanswered questions.

Why had her master been awake all this time without telling her…?

When did her master wake up?

Before the wedding? During the ceremony? Or just now?

But why did it even matter?

Her master, even after regaining consciousness, hadn’t resented her…

She had committed such a transgression, one she herself couldn’t forgive, yet her master, awake and aware, had still played along, fulfilling her despicable wish.

Even with unspoken burdens, her master still treated her with sincerity.

How could she not trust her master’s feelings?

    The world was truly unfair.

And the greatest unfairness had befallen her.

—She was the most unworthy disciple, yet she had the best master in the world.

Mu Tao bit her lip, her gaze fixed on Li Yu, her emotions swirling, then, tears falling silently, she carefully moved closer and gently hugged Li Yu, burying her face against her neck.

“Master, I was wrong, I was truly wrong…”

She repeated these words, her joy intertwined with a fear that this was just a beautiful dream.

Guilt gnawed at her, her apologies, though countless, unable to break free from the cocoon she had spun around herself.

Li Yu looked at the flickering candlelight, listening silently.

Gradually, the trembling in Mu Tao’s voice subsided.

She seemed exhausted, her eyes dry, her throat parched, her apologies weakening, yet persistent, like whispers in a dream, heartbreaking in their softness.

She wasn’t just seeking forgiveness; she was seeking punishment.

She believed in her master’s sincerity but didn’t believe she deserved it.

Only by paying the price could she find peace.

Li Yu finally raised her hand and gently stroked Mu Tao’s back,

Her fingers threading through Mu Tao’s hair, her touch gentler than before.

“I will punish you,” she said softly.

Mu Tao’s body trembled at the response.

After a moment of hesitation, she looked up, her eyes filled with a desperate hope for redemption.

“You said the immortal sects disrespected you, but have you shown me any respect?” Li Yu pulled Mu Tao away, her voice laced with displeasure. “In your heart, you’ve already claimed ownership of me. When you decided to bring me here, you stopped respecting my wishes.”

She looked into Mu Tao’s increasingly anxious eyes and continued, “You should be grateful that I’m still here, that I went through with this wedding, only because being with you in the Demon Realm was my initial wish, a wish I’ve regretted not fulfilling these past six months.”

    “Master…”

“If it weren’t for that, you should know better than I do…the consequences of your actions.” Li Yu took a deep breath. “Mu Tao, I never taught you these things.”

Mu Tao’s eyes, red-rimmed, stared into the blue depths of Li Yu’s.

She didn’t defend herself, just waited for the final judgment.

“Honestly, I’m angry,” Li Yu continued. “Before making this decision, you not only disregarded my feelings, but you also abandoned your own.”

“You think you’re in control, but you’ve trapped yourself in this mess. You know you can’t control me forever, you’re just waiting for the inevitable, ready to accept my anger, my punishment…” Li Yu sighed softly. “But Mu Tao, you’re crying, you’re afraid, you haven’t had a moment’s peace these past few days.”

Li Yu asked softly, “Your forceful demands, your desperate pleas, like a reckless gamble—if you lose, have you considered the consequences?”

Mu Tao hesitated. “Master…will never forgive me…”

Li Yu poked her sharply in the temple, making her wince and close her eyes.

Li Yu: “Is that all you can think about?!”

    Mu Tao: “…”

“If I’m unwilling to…be with you like this, if I resent you for this, can you keep me imprisoned forever?” Li Yu said, exasperated. “Even without cultivating, my injuries will eventually heal. One day, I’ll break free from your spell and find a way to make you pay.”

Li Yu’s gaze hardened. “Have you considered…that I might kill you, or take you back to Mount Chao Yao, offering you as proof of my loyalty—Even if that day is far off, it’s still a possibility.”

“Besides, Xiang Hanyu and Yan Buqiu are from the human realm. They came here, stayed by your side, because they were worried about you straying from the right path.” She continued, “You can imprison me for a while, but eventually they’ll become suspicious.”

“If that happens, what will you do?” Li Yu asked softly. “Will you, to keep me here, drive away the two people who sacrificed everything to be with you?”

“I don’t care…” Mu Tao’s body trembled slightly as she lowered her head, her hands clenching the red fabric of her robe. “If Master truly resents me, even if I die by your hand, I’m willing…”

Her voice trembled, an unwavering obsession in her pale, bloodshot eyes.

Li Yu’s heart ached, and she fought back tears.

This was different from the original story.

If this were the original Mu Tao, she wouldn’t even need the mind-control spell to keep her by her side.

Just cripple her cultivation, and she would be trapped forever, without dignity.

No need to consider her wishes or the consequences.

The protagonist in the original story, her self-destructive tendencies directed both at the world that wronged her and at the person she craved but couldn’t have.

But the Mu Tao before her now,

Even when briefly losing control under the Demon Bone’s influence and hurting her, was filled with guilt.

Even with her resentment and pain, her obsession and despair, she never truly intended to harm Li Yu like in the original story.

Even death by Li Yu’s hand…she would willingly accept…

“Did I teach you to be so foolish?” Li Yu wiped away her tears, her heart aching. “As punishment, from now on, you must obey me in all important matters. Otherwise…”

“Otherwise…” Mu Tao looked up at her, her eyes filled with tears, her voice anxious.

“Otherwise, you’re sleeping on the floor.” Li Yu frowned slightly. “The number of days depends on the severity of your disobedience.”

Mu Tao blinked, surprised and disbelieving, clearly not expecting such a “severe” punishment.

She didn’t dare speak, just stared at Li Yu.

Li Yu seemed to remember something, her voice slightly hesitant. “And also…you’re always so…reckless! Instead of apologizing afterwards, why not be more gentle next time?”

Mu Tao’s eyes widened, the usual apology caught in her throat.

Li Yu sighed, sat down, and started eating the fruits and pastries on the table.

Mu Tao stood beside her for a long time, like a child being punished, then pulled over a stool and sat down, cautiously touching Li Yu’s arm.

She asked softly, “When…when did you wake up…?”

Li Yu said, as if still sulking, “Not telling.”

Actually, she wasn’t sure when she woke up.

While under the spell, her consciousness had been muddled, able to see and hear, but not think or act clearly.

Like being aware of being in a dream, yet only able to watch another version of herself, doing things that seemed like her, yet not her.

Occasionally, her own consciousness would briefly influence her actions.

But Mu Tao wouldn’t believe anything she said or did.

Sometimes she felt incredibly frustrated, wanting to shake Mu Tao and ask, What do I have to do to make you believe me?

But she couldn’t control her body, only watch helplessly as Mu Tao’s guilt and self-blame escalated.

It wasn’t until that day, trying on the wedding attire, when Mu Tao lost control and injured her, that the guilt-ridden Mu Tao released the spell on her meridians.

After that, her consciousness gradually returned.

It had been a slow process.

Although exhausting, as long as she focused, she could briefly control her body.

With practice, her mind became clearer.

And she fully regained consciousness just now, when Mu Tao pressed her against the bed, wanting her, yet hesitating.

She had just looked at her, seen the pain and despair in her eyes.

And a single thought appeared in her mind:

Mu Tao was about to break.

That foolish girl must be hating herself now.

If she avoided her now, regardless of the reason, if she couldn’t explain, she would be pushing Mu Tao towards a sea of despair.

    So, she reached out.

No matter the cost, she couldn’t let Mu Tao drown.

This was the only way she could think of to save her.

Li Yu turned slightly and gently placed her hand on the back of Mu Tao’s neck. “Whenever I woke up, those moments when you felt me trying to stop you…those were real, I wanted to.”

She didn’t know why, but tears welled up in her eyes as she spoke.

Mu Tao caught the falling tear, the cold drop forming a pearl in her palm.

Her breath hitched, her expression shifting, a smile appearing, more painful than tears.

“Master, I…” A thousand words filled her heart, yet she couldn’t utter a single one, just clutching the red fabric of her robe.

“You wanted to know…my reason, right?” Li Yu gently took Mu Tao’s clenched hands, her voice filled with tenderness. “Try…using your spiritual energy, then perhaps…you’ll understand my concerns.”

There was no warning from the system.

Although confused, Mu Tao followed her instructions and conjured a black flame at her fingertip.

    Nothing happened.

    Li Yu: “Not enough.”

Mu Tao, hearing this, released a wisp of dark red resentment from the flame.

    She frowned slightly.

A strange discomfort spread through her body, not intense, but noticeable.

Li Yu took her hand, interrupting the flow of spiritual energy. “That’s enough!”

Mu Tao looked at her, surprised. “Master…”

“Those harsh words before…I had no choice. If you…become too intimate with me, it will be transferred to you.” Li Yu looked into Mu Tao’s eyes, her voice filled with helplessness. “It wasn’t that I didn’t want to tell you, I just…couldn’t, I truly couldn’t…it was restricting me…”

Mu Tao’s eyes narrowed. “Was it Weisheng Xuanzhu?”

    Li Yu: “…”

Not exactly, but since she couldn’t explain, she might as well let him take the blame.

    They were both…problematic individuals.

    Li Yu sighed and nodded.

The faint candlelight illuminated the shifting emotions in Mu Tao’s light brown eyes.

Both Xiang Hanyu and Yan Buqiu had examined her master. Although weak and depleted of spiritual energy, her injuries weren’t life-threatening, certainly not enough to make her unconscious for half a month.

Her master fainted on their way back from Mount Chao Yao, so, despite her weakened state, she had endured the backlash of the curse, rushing towards her?

And when she woke up, the look in her eyes had indeed been one of…joy.

Only when she, Mu Tao, crossed the line, did that joy turn into panic.

That fear, that anxiety, even the resistance, it was all…to protect her…

The unspoken words, the unexplained reason, it was this curse.

Her master had pushed her away, not wanting her to be harmed.

“Master…” Mu Tao asked softly, “If it enters my body, is it…contagious, or is it transferred?”

    “Transferred.”

    “Can it…return to you?”

Li Yu lowered her gaze and shook her head slightly.

She had also considered this, if the curse could be transferred, perhaps it could also be transferred back.

But that thought was too naive, so naive she questioned her own intelligence.

Weisheng Xuanzhu, who wanted to revive the Heavenly Demon, who had been plotting in secret for over three thousand years, wouldn’t leave such an obvious loophole.

In fact, the moment this thought crossed her mind, while still under the spell, she had received an answer from the system.

—The transfer was one-way, and only once, specifically designed for the protagonist.

And the only way to remove the curse was for the caster to dispel it, or for the caster’s soul to be destroyed… There was no other way.

As Li Yu’s expression turned serious, Mu Tao spoke.

“Then it’s fine.” Mu Tao’s voice was soft. “Master has endured so much for me; it’s my turn to bear some of the burden.”

    “…”

“I’m not afraid of pain, as long as Master isn’t hurt.” There was a hint of joy in Mu Tao’s voice.

This uncontainable joy, just like the joy she always showed whenever she could be of help, was incredibly endearing.

Li Yu was speechless, staring at Mu Tao’s smiling eyes.

This foolish girl didn’t seem to care about the consequences.

“It will put you in danger, and I knew that, yet I still let it happen…” Li Yu couldn’t help but ask. “Don’t you…blame me, aren’t you…afraid?”

“You warned me, Master; it was me who disobeyed…” Mu Tao said earnestly. “Actually, even if you had told me, if you were willing, I would still bear it for you, without hesitation.”

    Her voice was firm, unwavering.

Like her gaze, fixed on Li Yu, a devotion that transcended time.

They looked at each other in silence, time seemingly frozen.

Were the Netherbloom Flowers losing their light?

    They couldn’t see.

But the candles in the room were almost burned down.

Mu Tao suddenly took Li Yu’s hands in hers and asked softly, “Master, can…can I touch you today?”

Li Yu opened her mouth, unsure how to respond.

    Silence was consent.

Mu Tao stood up, lifted Li Yu into her arms, carried her to the bed, and gently laid her down.

Li Yu: “I think we should discuss the curse, Weisheng Xuanzhu, he…”

Mu Tao looked slightly hurt. “Today is our wedding day, this is our wedding chamber, and Master…wants to talk about someone else?”

    Li Yu was speechless.

“Can we discuss it tomorrow?” Mu Tao said, kicking off her embroidered shoes and climbing onto the bed.

Her tear-filled eyes looked at Li Yu expectantly, waiting for permission.

But Li Yu knew that with the change in Mu Tao’s eyes, whether she agreed or not, there was no escape.

And as expected, Mu Tao took her silence as consent.

The candlelight flickered, and the gauzy bed curtains fell.

Once again, Mu Tao removed her clothes.

“Mu Tao…” Li Yu grabbed her robe.

    “I’m here, Master.”

    “I’m a little tired…”

    “Then I’ll be gentle.”

Li Yu’s clothes were already disheveled.

    “Mu Tao…”

    “…”

    —She didn’t listen.

    Was winter approaching?

Si Qinglan stared at the falling leaves outside the window.

The tree, stripped bare, looked desolate.

She could make flowers bloom at will; the seasons held no meaning for her.

But there was still no reply from the Demon Realm.

Anxiety made time slow down, the autumn days stretching endlessly.

How were Li Yu and Mu Tao?

    Si Qinglan sighed deeply.

    Why was she feeling melancholic?

“Why worry about things you can’t control?” she muttered, trying to push the worries aside, but then she heard anxious shouts from afar.

    It was Qin Yuan.

“Master! Master! Something terrible has happened!”

The girl rushed to her window, her speed so fast she almost couldn’t stop.

“What is it? Why are you shouting—” Si Qinglan rested her chin on her hand and sighed, lacking energy. “What’s so terrible? Is the sky falling?”

“I, I just went to Qingke Hua, Qin Ruoheng and the little black bird are both injured, and I, I saw…” Qin Yuan’s voice was frantic. “They…there’s a…stellar energy around them…”

    The sky was falling!

Before Qin Yuan could finish, Si Qinglan transformed into a green light and flew towards Qingke Hua.

    “Master, I…”

Too slow, she couldn’t keep up.

Si Qinglan arrived at Qingke Hua, her heart pounding.

A strange, unfamiliar spiritual aura lingered in the air. She followed it and saw the destroyed houses and trees.

Although it was daytime, the ruins were shrouded in a lingering darkness, dotted with stars.

And…fragments of ice, evidence of a one-sided battle.

Si Qinglan stared at the scene, stunned.

After a moment, she flew to Suiqiong Cave, but it was empty.

Suiqiong Cave had been repaired; the Upper Spirit Lamp should have been sealed here.

If the black-robed figure had attacked, he would have come here, but there were no signs of a struggle.

Yet, traces of a battle remained at Qingke Hua…

The black-robed figure’s target was the Upper Spirit Lamp; why would he fight Weisheng Xuanzhu there?

    No, she was wrong.

The seal here wasn’t easily broken.

There hadn’t been any commotion, yet the Lamp was gone.

It was an inside job, she should have known!

The black-robed figure Li Yu spoke of…was Weisheng Xuanzhu.

Stealing the Lamp, destroying the Heavenly Gate, using Li Yu to manipulate Mu Tao, and now, leaving Mount Chao Yao with the Upper Spirit Lamp.

Taking the demonic soul, finding the Demon Bone…

His goal, all along, had been to revive the Heavenly Demon.

The person he fought at Qingke Hua must have been his disciple.

And for gathering evil energy, a Heavenly Soul Yang Spirit would be the perfect catalyst.

He had been on Mount Chao Yao for over three thousand years, perhaps waiting for this very moment.

    What should she do…?

    Could she still stop him?

  • Devilish Disciple [Transmigration] 71

Chapter 71: “I Sincerely Wish to Marry You.”

The wedding palanquin, carried by thirty-six people, slowly landed before the main hall.

Mu Tao took Li Yu’s hand and, gazing at her face, led her away from the flower-adorned path.

The usually cold and imposing Demon Lord’s palace was brightly lit by warm, human-realm candles.

The flickering candlelight made the blue in Li Yu’s eyes seem hazy and indistinct.

Like an illusion, Mu Tao felt that Li Yu’s eyes weren’t as vacant and unfocused as before.

But as she tried to look closer, Li Yu lowered her gaze.

Mu Tao opened her mouth as if to say something, then hesitated, and led Li Yu into the hall, towards the towering throne, under the watchful eyes of the assembled demons.

Flowers and red candles lined the long stone steps leading to the throne.

Many young demon children, their hands forming clumsy seals, scattered sparkling lights throughout the hall.

The children’s blessings, pure and simple, were a tradition in Demon Realm weddings, wishing the newlyweds a long and happy life together.

They reached the throne and turned to look down at the demons below.

Looking at their various expressions, Mu Tao tightened her grip on Li Yu’s hand.

“Master,” she said softly, looking up at Li Yu, a flicker of anxiety in her eyes.

Mu Tao forced a smile. “Master,” she whispered, “You are…willing to be with me…forever, right?”

“Mm,” Li Yu nodded, a glint of light seemingly flickering in her eyes.

Mu Tao was momentarily entranced, then she realized it was just the reflection of the countless candles and sparkling lights, not a true spark within those blue eyes.

They had no elders to bow to, nor did they wish to bow to the uncaring heavens.

So, they turned to each other and bowed three times, a sacred vow.

From this day forward, the god who protected the human realm would rule the Demon Realm alongside her.

“Master, I won’t let anyone mistreat you again.” Mu Tao smiled faintly, gently caressing Li Yu’s face, her expression a mix of complex emotions and a possessive devotion. “The human realm’s immortal sects might scorn you, but the demons here won’t dare.”

Her eyes hardened. “If anyone dares to disrespect you, I will make sure they never speak again.”

Her soft voice, amplified by spiritual power, reached every ear in the hall.

    The demons exchanged glances, silent.

Li Yu blinked, her gaze fixed on Mu Tao.

After a moment of silence, Mu Tao swept Li Yu into her arms. Li Yu instinctively wrapped her arms around Mu Tao’s neck, a flicker of surprise in her eyes.

Her long sleeves draped over Mu Tao, the soft red fabric wrinkling in her grasp.

Carrying Li Yu, Mu Tao swiftly moved past the crowd and reached the entrance of the hall.

The ornaments in Li Yu’s hair swayed, the glass beads on her belt chiming softly.

Her long, fishtail train trailed behind her, a symbol of their entangled fates.

Without hesitation, Mu Tao carried Li Yu out of the black stone hall, following the warm glow of the candles, towards their wedding chamber.

The demons turned, confused, watching them leave.

Their new Demon Lord, after the ceremony, had simply left with her bride.

She didn’t stay to entertain the guests, leaving everything to Xiang Hanyu.

Today, she only wanted to be with her master.

The wedding chamber was decorated in human-realm style.

Soft red silk draped from the ceiling, hanging in gentle folds.

Candles flickered on the desk, the tea table, the carved wooden table laden with fruits, pastries, and wine, even by the bedside and in the corners of the room.

Lanterns of various sizes hung from the ceiling, illuminating the room, no trace of the usual green spiritual fire.

The flickering candlelight, reflecting off the gold and jade ornaments in Li Yu’s hair, made Mu Tao restless.

She gently placed Li Yu on the bed.

The bed curtains were a soft, alluring red. Li Yu’s long train spread around her like scattered flower petals, a pool of vibrant color.

And her master, within this sea of red, was the most captivating sight.

Even sitting motionless on the bed, she drew Mu Tao’s gaze.

Mu Tao’s heart pounded in her chest.

She felt restless, unable to calm down.

She gazed into Li Yu’s eyes, unsure whether the light she saw within them was from the candles, or from…something else.

A long silence, as if time itself had stopped.

They just stared at each other, neither speaking.

The more Mu Tao looked into those blue eyes, the more a burning sensation tightened her throat.

She knew, she was experiencing another delusion, a sudden, irrational belief that her master had awakened.

But how could that be? If her master was truly awake, she wouldn’t have participated in the ceremony, wouldn’t be sitting here so obediently, like a jade statue, silently returning her gaze.

The candlelight suddenly seemed too bright,

Creating an illusion of awareness in those vacant eyes.

Mu Tao frowned and, with a wave of her hand, extinguished most of the candles.

The room darkened, only a few flickering flames remaining in the corners.

Their long shadows danced on the walls.

Mu Tao could no longer see the faint light in Li Yu’s eyes.

She breathed a sigh of relief and sat down beside Li Yu.

Li Yu’s gaze, fixed on Mu Tao, hadn’t wavered.

But she didn’t speak, as if waiting for her “master’s” next command.

Mu Tao took Li Yu’s hands in hers, placed them on her lap, and whispered, “Master, for a long, long time, I’ve been dreaming of this moment, holding your hands, hearing you say…that you’re willing to be with me forever.”

“How long…how long have I dreamt of this?” Mu Tao looked at their shadows on the wall, her thoughts drifting.

She stared at their intertwined shadows, as if the candlelight, passing through that puppet-like body, could reveal the person she truly craved.

After a long silence, a tearful smile appeared on her face, and she asked softly, “Master, do you remember…the year you brought me back to Chaoxi Pond?”

“That year, I couldn’t even transform, my cultivation so weak I couldn’t even speak.” Mu Tao said. “Perhaps because I was…different, the other spirits and disciples on the mountain didn’t like me.”

“I was always bullied. You happened to be passing by one day and saw them mistreating me, so you brought me back to Chaoxi Pond.” A warm smile appeared in her eyes. “That day, you told me…from now on, I would be your only disciple.”

Mu Tao paused. “After saying that, you left—and I would just…stare at your retreating figure, day after day, year after year. You never seemed to notice me, yet I was your only disciple.”

“And for some reason…a thought took root in my heart.” Mu Tao placed her hand over her heart. “It grew stronger, deeper, intertwining with every part of me.”

Her eyes reddened, her fingers pressing against her chest, as if wanting to carve out that thought and show it to Li Yu.

“I couldn’t help but feel that…Master should care about me, that this distance…wasn’t how it should be between us… I wanted…to be closer to you.”

She said she had longed for this, waited for this, for over two hundred years…

And now, she finally had it.

She looked at Li Yu, waiting for a response.

But Li Yu just lowered her gaze, staring at the flickering candlelight in the corner, lost in thought.

Mu Tao, slightly displeased, gently took Li Yu’s hand and kissed her fingers,

Then the back of her hand, her wrist—finally leaving a faint red mark on the Harmony Bell tied with a red string.

“Master, Master…” her voice trembled, a plea in it. “Just…pity me, and promise me…you’ll never leave, okay?”

She saw Li Yu’s lips part slightly, but no words came out.

This silence, like a heavy stone tied to her heart, dragged her down.

The stone sank into the ocean, her heart sinking along with it into the cold, dark depths.

    Suddenly, Li Yu responded.

    “I won’t leave.”

Her voice was soft, like a whisper in a dream.

A flicker of joy in Mu Tao’s eyes quickly faded.

Just a puppet controlled by a spell.

What was there to be happy about?

Mu Tao lowered her gaze, frowning, her thoughts a tangled mess.

She seemed to steel herself, her hand reaching out to gently pull at Li Yu’s robe, sliding it off her shoulder, revealing the crimson inner garment.

The thin fabric, like a veil, revealed the pale skin of Li Yu’s shoulder and arm.

Mu Tao hesitated for a moment, then slid the garment further down, exposing Li Yu’s shoulders and arms.

Li Yu looked at her, her brow furrowed slightly, making no other move.

Ignoring the look, Mu Tao reached for the jade-studded belt, her fingers impatiently fumbling with the clasp, then pulled it off, tossing it aside.

The belt landed on the floor, the glass beads chiming softly.

She reached for the long skirt, then paused, meeting Li Yu’s blue eyes.

A sudden wave of anxiety washed over her.

She took a deep breath and gently pushed Li Yu against the bedpost, a hint of anger in her eyes.

Her master shouldn’t look at her like that.

Even panic, disgust, or fear were better than that bottomless sadness in her puppet-like eyes.

Why… Why was it like this…?

Was being with her…truly that unbearable for her master?

A tear rolled down her cheek, the warmth quickly turning cold.

Mu Tao’s breathing deepened as she struggled to calm her racing heart.

“Are you…afraid of me, Master?” she whispered, but received no answer.

Li Yu raised her hand and gently caressed Mu Tao’s tear-stained face.

Her cool fingers brushed against the corner of her eye.

Mu Tao couldn’t hold back any longer and pulled Li Yu into a tight embrace.

She buried her face in the crook of Li Yu’s neck, inhaling her scent, a fragrance that never used to be there, the scent of cosmetics, applied only for their wedding day.

This scent, this change, was because of her; she should possess it completely.

Her eyes turned crimson, and she removed the last of Li Yu’s clothes, leaving only a thin, peach-colored undergarment.

She pulled the ornaments from Li Yu’s hair, scattering them.

She pushed Li Yu onto the bed, holding her tightly, feeling the rise and fall of her chest against hers,

The rhythm of their breaths, their heartbeats.

She held Li Yu’s hands, kissing her forehead, her eyes, the bridge of her nose, her lips,

    Every inch of her skin.

The silver bells on her wrist chimed softly.

The warm candlelight cast their shadows on the wall, intertwined.

Her movements gradually slowed, each kiss lingering.

She wanted to stop, but every time she tried to pull away, Li Yu’s hand would gently touch the back of her neck, as if unwilling to let her go.

Perhaps she had lost her mind to have such a delusion.

    After a long time,

The crimson in Mu Tao’s eyes faded.

The person in her arms, exhausted, disheveled, her body covered in bruises, looked incredibly vulnerable.

Several pearls, scattered on the pillow, glistened in the dim candlelight.

Mu Tao’s heart pounded, and she froze, unsure what to do.

She stared for a long moment, then, her hands trembling, pulled the blanket over Li Yu, carefully covering her like a precious treasure.

As she tucked the blanket around her, she met Li Yu’s gaze.

Each second of eye contact was like a thorn twisting in her heart.

    She must have gone mad.

She had done the most foolish, the most despicable thing…

Her master would never forgive her.

After tonight, there was no turning back.

Mu Tao curled up, her head buried in her knees, unable to stop crying.

Like that day six months ago, lost in the darkness, without even a flicker of light to guide her.

    She deserved this.

    She wasn’t inherently good.

Born with a Demon Bone, wasn’t she inherently evil?

When everyone treated her badly, she hadn’t been indifferent, she hadn’t wanted to endure it forever.

She had wanted to kill them all.

She had torn apart beautiful flowers, imagining them as the people who hated her, who lived better lives than her.

She had clawed at small, weak creatures, imagining them as those who hurt her, wanting to tear them apart.

    She wasn’t obedient, wasn’t well-behaved.

She had simply been…trying to survive by pleasing others.

Her sense of right and wrong, good and evil, was all learned, all imitation, just trying to guess and appease others, nothing truly her own.

Qingxuan Revered One was wrong to bring her to Mount Chao Yao, and her master was also wrong to take her in.

She was a monster, a calamity.

If her master had killed her two hundred years ago, or hadn’t saved her six months ago, things wouldn’t have come to this.

How could she undo the spell now? How could she face her master when she woke up?

How would her master look at her?

    —With resentment? Or hatred?

A despair deeper than the ocean consumed her.

Her hands clenched tightly, as if trying to hold onto something, yet her palms were empty.

A cool hand gently patted her head.

She looked up, her vision blurred with tears, and met those familiar blue eyes.

“Don’t cry,” Li Yu said softly. “You were the one who…forced me, why are you crying?”

    “…”

“I’ve never met anyone as difficult to please as you.” Li Yu pinched her tear-stained cheek. “You don’t believe me when I’m conscious, and you don’t like what I say when I’m not.”

The pinch made Mu Tao’s eyes widen in pain, she wanted to say something, but her sobs choked the words.

Li Yu: “I only lied to you once; are you going to hold it against me forever?”

    Mu Tao: “M…Master?”

The candlelight was dim; she couldn’t see her master’s expression clearly through her tears.

    Her master…was awake…

    When?

    Just now? Or earlier?

No, her master wasn’t awake; if she was, she wouldn’t be acting like this.

She had imprisoned her master, controlled her mind, treated her like a plaything—she was guilty of unforgivable sins.

Her master would hate her, forever.

    Her already curled-up body trembled.

Like falling into a bottomless abyss, a coldness that almost froze her blood.

Li Yu: “I truly don’t know what to do with you.”

    Mu Tao: “…”

Li Yu sat up, pulling the blanket around her, and took Mu Tao’s hand.

    She smiled, a bitter smile.

She truly didn’t know what to do with Mu Tao.

The words she wanted to say wouldn’t come out, the things she wanted to explain couldn’t be explained.

A single lie, and it was as if she had been sentenced to death, with no chance of reprieve.

During those two weeks under the spell, she had seen the deep-seated insecurity and possessiveness in Mu Tao’s eyes.

Even with the power to control everything, the girl still felt unworthy.

She believed she had been abandoned by the world.

The more desperately she tried to hold on, the more she feared losing everything.

Li Yu knew that as long as these misunderstandings remained, she couldn’t ease Mu Tao’s anxiety.

When she regained consciousness, she had considered escaping, fighting back, even trying to reason with the girl.

But after much thought, she chose to follow Mu Tao’s wishes.

Some things couldn’t be explained, some knots couldn’t be untied.

If she feared the curse, this misunderstanding between them would remain like a thorn, a constant source of pain.

Only by resolving this could they discuss the future.

    The curse, the Heavenly Demon,

The hidden plot the system insisted on, perhaps it was the path she had been trying to avoid.

Since it was unavoidable, she would face it.

Li Yu touched the silver bells and looked into Mu Tao’s eyes. “I never took it off,” she said softly. “What more do I have to do to prove I never intended to leave?”

Why…why would a puppet controlled by a spell say such things…?

Li Yu sighed and frowned slightly. “You, with your measly few centuries of cultivation, were afraid of the Heavenly Demon’s power harming me, so you didn’t even dare to use your full strength—How long did you think you could control me?”

Such a weak little Demon Lord, not even comparable to Weisheng Xuanzhu, even Xiang Hanyu was more ruthless.

Seeing Mu Tao’s stunned silence, Li Yu flicked her forehead again.

    Her master was awake…

    Her master…was truly awake!

    And she wasn’t afraid…wasn’t angry…

Mu Tao snapped back to reality, a surge of joy overwhelming her.

But the joy was fleeting, replaced by panic, confusion, and guilt.

“Master, Master…I, I was wrong…” she grabbed Li Yu’s hands, her voice choked with tears. “I was truly wrong, Master, punish me however you want…just please, don’t leave me…”

Li Yu pulled her hands away.

    Mu Tao’s heart sank.

    She…couldn’t keep her?

“I’m hungry. As punishment…get off the bed…” Li Yu sniffled and pouted. “…and cook for me.”

Mu Tao stared at her, speechless, as if she couldn’t believe her ears.

Li Yu poked her forehead. “I can’t even punish you anymore, can I?”

Mu Tao hiccuped, tears streaming down her face.

After a moment, she scrambled off the bed, ready to obey.

But before she could even reach the door, Li Yu called out,

    “Come back.”

Mu Tao froze, then rushed back, kneeling by the bedside, looking up at Li Yu with tear-filled eyes.

Li Yu gestured towards the table with the wedding wine. “I just realized there’s food there, you don’t have to cook.”

    Mu Tao: “…”

With a flick of her wrist, Li Yu changed her clothes, kicked off her red embroidered shoes, and, barefoot, her hair now free from its elaborate updo, walked to the table and picked up a pastry.

She finally understood why fewer and fewer people in her world wanted to get married.

    Weddings were so troublesome!

She had been hungry for a while!

“…Master?” Mu Tao followed her, her eyes filled with caution.

    Li Yu continued eating,

Two pastries, then a peeled orange.

It wasn’t enough to fill her empty stomach, but it helped.

She turned to look at Mu Tao, her makeup still vibrant, yet her expression gloomy, and sighed deeply.

The sigh made Mu Tao straighten up.

Li Yu: “You want to marry me?”

    Mu Tao: “…”

Li Yu: “You skipped a step.”

    Mu Tao: “…?”

Li Yu poured some wedding wine into two cups, turned to Mu Tao, and said, “Before consummating the marriage, we drink the nuptial cup, understand?”

Mu Tao stared at her blankly, clearly not understanding.

Li Yu took her hand and made her drink the wine with her, their arms intertwined.

    So bitter…

Li Yu frowned, put down her cup, turned to Mu Tao, and said seriously, “Mu Tao, listen carefully. I’m only saying this once.”

“My feelings for you are not just those of a master and disciple.” She raised her hand and gently wiped away Mu Tao’s tears. “I sincerely wish to marry you.”

Li Yu then playfully, yet firmly, tugged at Mu Tao’s red ear.

Hearing Mu Tao’s wince, she glared at her.

    “If you don’t believe me…”

“…then pretend I never drank this wine with you.”

  • Devilish Disciple [Transmigration] 70

Chapter 70: She Had Waited a Lifetime for This Day

Mu Tao was momentarily lost in thought.

Such deep helplessness, expressed in a single, soft sigh.

No scolding, just a faint complaint, a hint of dissatisfaction, yet no desire to escape.

Were these words also spoken under the spell’s control?

The mind-control technique didn’t completely erase consciousness, just suppressed it, leaving behind a shell that obeyed basic commands.

Her master suddenly saying something that seemed to defy her orders, perhaps her true self, trapped beneath the spell, truly felt this way?

But even so, wasn’t her master blaming her, even slightly?

Was it the spell, or did her master genuinely not resent her?

Mu Tao’s brow remained furrowed; she didn’t release Li Yu’s hand.

Li Yu’s red sleeve slipped, and Mu Tao stared at the silver bells tied with a red string on her wrist, murmuring softly, “Being my master…is it really that difficult…?”

She didn’t understand what her master meant by “more difficult than cultivating alone.”

Her master had cultivated alone for millennia.

Had her master, deep down, also felt…lonely?

So, had her master been yearning for a partner for dual cultivation?

Mu Tao’s gaze lingered on the red mark on Li Yu’s neck, then shifted to the glimpse of white skin beneath the red silk of her robe, her heart quickening.

    No, that was impossible!

Her master was as pure as the moon; she must have misunderstood!

But if not dual cultivation, then what did her master mean?

She never misheard her master’s words.

Mu Tao gripped Li Yu’s hand tighter, her heart pounding, her eyes downcast.

    She was becoming increasingly confused.

Her master had been acting strangely lately. Controlled by the spell, her every word and action should have been pleasing, yet she kept saying confusing things.

As Mu Tao struggled to understand, Li Yu closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep.

Li Yu’s breathing evened out, but her brow furrowed slightly. She suddenly turned and swatted Mu Tao’s hand.

The sound startled Mu Tao, who quickly released Li Yu’s hand, carefully placing it on the bed.

Demonic energy and divine power clashed; she couldn’t heal her master or easily examine her injuries.

Her master had been fine, but now she seemed so weak. It must have been Mu Tao’s unintentional release of resentment that hurt her.

Guilt washed over her like a cold wave.

When Li Yu woke up, the green spiritual fire still flickered in the room.

The ice flower by the window, illuminated by the Netherbloom Flower’s faint glow, had a purplish hue.

The wedding attire and a wooden food box were on the table.

Mu Tao lay asleep beside her, her eyes red and puffy.

A soft blanket covered her, and her torn undergarment had been replaced.

A dull ache lingered on her neck and waist, but the familiar flow of spiritual energy had returned.

She instinctively raised her hand, and a faint light, gently healing her minor injuries, flickered at her fingertips.

Mu Tao, sensing something, looked up, her eyes filled with guilt.

“Master!” She grabbed Li Yu’s raised hand.

Then, realizing she had interrupted the healing, she quickly let go.

The gentle blue light reappeared, soft as a distant dream.

Mu Tao stared at it, her eyes dry from crying, until it faded, and she slowly returned to reality.

“How long have I been asleep?” Li Yu asked.

“About four or five hours…” Mu Tao whispered, carefully taking Li Yu’s hand. “I accidentally injured Master. Once your spiritual energy is restored, this won’t happen again.”

Li Yu sat up, changed her clothes with a spell, and said casually, “I doubt that.”

    Mu Tao: “Master…”

Li Yu: “Even with my spiritual energy restored, if you lose control, I’m still no match for you.”

    Mu Tao: “…”

Li Yu’s unexpected retort made Mu Tao’s eyes widen.

Panic, helplessness, like being caught red-handed, yet also a strange sense of relief.

But as she looked up and met Li Yu’s gaze, a wave of disappointment washed over her.

She had thought her master was truly awake.

Her master’s eyes were still unfocused, vacant, yet why did she feel a glimmer of her true self?

She wasn’t thinking straight; if she really wanted her master to wake up, she could just dispel the spell. What was this lingering hope in her heart?

She didn’t dare let her master wake up, not yet.

Until everything was settled, it was best for her master to remain obedient and predictable.

If her master woke up now, there would be anger, pain, resentment, and an attempt to escape.

But she couldn’t help but yearn for the day her master would wake up without scolding her, without trying to leave, when her master would be…herself again.

As if that could erase everything.

But how could such a thing be possible?

Mu Tao held Li Yu’s cold hand, a dull ache in her heart.

She was reaping what she had sown.

Because of her greed, she had lost even more.

Perhaps because of this single selfish act, nothing would ever be the same again.

But what could she do? She didn’t have the courage to stop.

She lowered her gaze, her voice barely a whisper, “I was wrong… I didn’t mean to…”

    Li Yu: “I’m hungry.”

    Mu Tao: “…”

Li Yu tilted her head and flicked Mu Tao’s forehead.

The flick, infused with spiritual energy, was strong enough to leave a red mark.

Mu Tao stared at Li Yu, her eyes wide with surprise. “M, Master…”

    Li Yu repeated, “I’m hungry.”

A flicker of displeasure in her vacant eyes.

Mu Tao blinked, and as Li Yu raised her hand again, she quickly grabbed it.

“Yes!” she said hastily. “I’ve already prepared the meal, I thought Master might be hungry when you woke up—it’s freshly made, shouldn’t be cold yet!”

She quickly went to the table, moved the wedding clothes to a nearby stool, and laid out the dishes.

When she turned around, Li Yu was already sitting at the table.

Her master’s expression was still the same, neither happy nor angry.

Even her smile was faint, artificial.

Mu Tao brought the bowl and chopsticks, wanting to feed her, but Li Yu snatched them away.

“I’ll eat myself,” Li Yu said, pointedly not looking at Mu Tao.

Mu Tao opened her mouth but didn’t speak.

She sat beside Li Yu, watching her, confused, unable to understand what was wrong.

    Her master seemed different.

Not just the difference of being controlled by a spell, but beneath that control, another version of her master, one she had never seen before, seemed to be struggling to emerge—as if trying to break free from her grasp.

She had noticed this before, but it was stronger now.

Trapped beneath the spell, a muddled consciousness, a true self.

Had her master never truly faced her before?

Mu Tao was lost in thought, barely touching her food, even after Li Yu finished.

Li Yu stood up, went to the other side of the table, and examined the wedding attire.

“Hmm…” A conflicted sound escaped her lips.

She conjured a water mirror with a spell.

Ignoring Mu Tao’s gaze, she tried on the other outfits, using spiritual power to change her appearance.

Mu Tao stared, her mind blank.

After trying them all on, Li Yu chose one and took it to the dressing table.

“This one,” she whispered, glancing at the Netherbloom Flower by the window.

Its dark purple petals indicated it was almost midnight.

Li Yu turned to Mu Tao and asked casually, “Aren’t you leaving?”

Mu Tao: “Is Master going to bed?”

Li Yu: “I just woke up; I can’t sleep yet.”

Mu Tao: “I want to stay with Master.”

    Li Yu: “Mm.”

The conversation stalled again. Mu Tao frowned, walked behind Li Yu, and hugged her, resting her head against her back.

“Master,” Mu Tao whispered, her voice muffled, “Are you…angry with me…?”

“Why would I be angry?” Li Yu’s voice was still emotionless.

    “You seem angry.”

“I won’t be angry with you.”

Mu Tao was silent for a moment, then gently blew on the wound on Li Yu’s neck.

The cool air made Li Yu instinctively flinch.

Mu Tao infused her breath with demonic energy, a subtle command: “I hurt Master. If you’re angry, you can tell me.”

A dark red light flickered on Li Yu’s forehead.

Li Yu frowned slightly. “I’m angry that you did that to me.”

Although she knew her master must be resentful, hearing those words still stung.

She wasn’t sure what Li Yu meant by “did that to me.”

Was it today’s misbehavior, or the mind-control spell?

Li Yu removed Mu Tao’s hands from her waist.

She walked to the window, gently touched the ice flower, and stared outside, saying nothing.

Mu Tao quickly followed and hugged her from behind again.

“Master, don’t leave me,” she pleaded softly.

    “Mm,” Li Yu replied softly.

“I’ll treat you well, Master, I’ll protect you always,” she said, her voice filled with guilt.

    “Okay.”

    Mu Tao: “Master…”

    Li Yu: “Hmm?”

Mu Tao: “After we’re married, can this disciple…dual cultivate with Master…?”

    Li Yu: “…”

“Master mentioned that cultivating alone is difficult. Although this disciple’s demonic energy clashes with Master’s divine power, I’ve also learned immortal techniques from you.” Mu Tao said softly. “I can suppress my demonic energy and use immortal techniques for dual cultivation.”

She nuzzled Li Yu’s ear. “What do you think, Master?”

Li Yu’s lips trembled slightly, and she managed a soft, “Okay.”

Mu Tao’s expression dimmed, but she still smiled and gently nibbled Li Yu’s ear.

The Demon Bone was within her; although she had better control now, she was still prone to losing it.

She didn’t dare be too reckless, afraid of hurting Li Yu again, just savoring the brief contact.

She released Li Yu and walked to her side, gazing at her face.

“Master, wait for me, just a little longer,” Mu Tao whispered, her light brown eyes shimmering with unshed tears.

It wouldn’t be long; on their wedding day, after their union was consummated, she would undo the spell.

She was preparing for the wedding as quickly as possible.

But no matter how quickly, she didn’t want to mistreat Li Yu.

This was the person she cherished most; she wanted to give her the best wedding she could.

Even without the human realm’s light, without the blessings of those they once knew, their wedding should still be grand, a joyous occasion…

But perhaps…there wouldn’t be many to celebrate with them.

The Demon Lord marrying the only god in the human realm would surely invite criticism.

And the world’s disapproval wasn’t just because of the difference between a god and a demon.

She and her master, one with the Heavenly Demon’s Demon Bone, the other guarding the Heavenly Demon’s soul fragment, both women, and master and disciple.

They were never meant to be together…

    But she didn’t care.

All she wanted was to be with her master, forever.

And for that, she would do anything, pay any price.

    What others thought…didn’t matter.

As long as her master was willing.

If her master was willing, she would defy the world.

And if her master wasn’t willing, she would find a way to make her willing.

Preparing a grand wedding in just half a month was a rushed affair.

The secluded palace where Li Yu was kept was unusually quiet, as Mu Tao, preoccupied with preparations, rarely visited, except for mealtimes.

As the Demon Lord, Mu Tao could no longer dress casually.

Li Yu, sitting by the window, would occasionally see a distant figure in unfamiliar attire.

The girl always came in a hurry, sometimes forgetting to change.

But before approaching the barrier, she would always change back into her Mount Chao Yao clothes, a stubborn adherence to the past—before her master, she would always be the same little disciple.

    But today was different.

Today was their wedding day. Mu Tao would be wearing the wedding attire Li Yu had chosen.

And the barrier around the palace was gone.

Li Yu saw Xiang Hanyu and Yan Buqiu for the first time since returning to the Demon Realm.

They were here to help her dress and prepare for the ceremony.

    They were worried and apprehensive.

They hadn’t been allowed inside since Li Yu woke up.

Mu Tao had confined her; if Li Yu didn’t want to escape, why was she imprisoned?

This wedding, like the one on Mount Chao Yao, probably wasn’t what Li Yu wanted, just something Mu Tao forced.

Perhaps even persuading her to wear the wedding attire would be a challenge.

“If Li Yu isn’t willing, whose wishes should we follow?” Xiang Hanyu asked worriedly.

“…Let’s ask her first,” Yan Buqiu sighed.

But when they entered, they saw Li Yu sitting before the dressing table, already wearing the wedding attire Mu Tao had chosen, trying on jewelry.

Hearing them enter, she glanced at them and said casually, “Oh, it’s you.”

Then she turned back to the mirror, comparing two phoenix hairpins.

“Exalted Immortal Li Yu…” Xiang Hanyu approached the dressing table, looking at Li Yu’s reflection, and asked tentatively, “Are you…happy today?”

    “Of course, very happy.”

“That’s good, but…” Xiang Hanyu paused, then smiled. “These were prepared hastily, I hope they are to your liking.”

Li Yu smiled faintly. “These are all chosen by Mu Tao; how could they not be to my liking?”

She looked at them, a smile in her eyes.

“I’ve never worn red before. It’s so vibrant; I almost feel unworthy.” She looked at her reflection and asked softly, “I don’t even remember how to apply makeup anymore, can you help me?”

She was right; the red accentuated her pallor.

But her smile was genuine, not a hint of reluctance in her eyes.

Xiang Hanyu relaxed and exchanged glances with Yan Buqiu. “Of course.”

“We’re here to help.” Yan Buqiu picked up the wooden comb. “Not just makeup, but we also need to style your hair.”

Li Yu nodded, put down the hairpins, and looked at her reflection.

The Netherbloom Flowers outside began to glow. Her usually pale face now carried a healthy flush, so bright she looked like a different person.

She applied rouge, concealing the last vestiges of paleness.

Pearl and jade ornaments adorned her hair, now styled in an elaborate updo.

Unlike human weddings, there was no need for a veil in the Demon Realm. Li Yu’s lips curved into a smile, her beauty on full display in the mirror.

Xiang Hanyu: “No wonder Mu Tao cherishes you so much. Your beauty today…is truly breathtaking.”

Li Yu didn’t respond, just smiled faintly, lowering her gaze.

After some time, Xiang Hanyu glanced at the flowers outside and helped Li Yu up, leading her out of the room.

The ornaments in her hair chimed softly.

Her magnificent wedding attire, embroidered with intricate gold thread and adorned with pearls from the human realm, shimmered with every movement.

The jade belt, with its white glass beads, chimed melodiously as she walked.

The long train, a fishtail design embroidered with spiritually infused silk on layers of thin gauze, trailed behind her, flowing like water with every step.

She stepped onto the wedding palanquin, decorated with flowers from the human realm.

Red candles, their flames protected by spiritual energy, lined the path, illuminating the dark Demon Realm.

It looked like a human celebration, yet the trees were those of the Demon Realm.

In the distance, the black stone Demon Lord’s palace, its entrance like the gaping maw of a dragon or a serpent, glowed with a faint, dark purple light.

Black mist swirled around the palace, and the demons, their expressions varied, watched as the palanquin, carrying the god from the human realm, approached.

In ancient times, after losing the war against the gods, the demons were forced to retreat to the cold, lightless Demon Realm.

Every attempt to return to the human realm was blocked by the gods and immortals of the Heavenly Realm.

And by the time the Heavenly Realm closed its gates, abandoning the human realm, most demons could no longer tolerate the changing seasons.

Legend said that only the Heavenly Demon’s return could lead them back to the light and protect them from its scorching heat.

The current Demon Lord, although young, possessed the Heavenly Demon’s Demon Bone and unparalleled demonic power, commanding the loyalty of all demons.

Yet, she insisted on marrying a god.

And this god had participated in the battle against the Heavenly Demon four thousand years ago.

Not only that, but this god was also the guardian of the Upper Spirit Lamp, containing the Heavenly Demon’s soul fragment.

This god couldn’t possibly be loyal to the Demon Realm.

They couldn’t understand why the Demon Lord insisted on marrying her.

But despite their objections, the grand wedding proceeded.

The woman in the palanquin, her features as delicate as a painting, a smile on her lips, illuminated by the red candles, her beauty surpassing even the vibrant flowers.

Mu Tao looked at her, a longing in her eyes, as if looking at that distant, unattainable purity she had yearned for during the past two hundred years.

    It felt like a dream.

Her master, also dressed in red, the most beautiful bride, walking towards her under everyone’s gaze.

She had waited a lifetime for this day.

    Even if it was forced,

Even if there were few to offer their blessings…

This was the happiest day of her life.
