    Chapter 24 p1

A rainy day. A colorful, dimly lit bar, filled with a hazy, sensual atmosphere.

Outside the bar, Shen Shu leaned in, whispering something in a woman’s ear.

    “Cut!”

“Shen Shu, your emotions are off.”

Shen Shu quickly straightened up, smoothing her dress. “Sorry, Director.” This was the fifth NG.

“What’s wrong, Shen Shu? You did so well in the first scene. Don’t be nervous. Just treat Xia Chun like any other actor. Take five, and we’ll try again,” the director said, his tone less encouraging than before.

Shen Shu nodded, murmuring an apology to the woman beside her. Without waiting for a response, she walked away, the wooden walkway damp from the artificial rain.

Just as they were about to start filming again, there was a problem with the props, disrupting the scene’s continuity. They had to postpone it.

Shen Shu went to the resting area. Despite the added scenes, she was still just a minor character, spending most of her time waiting. She sat with the script in her hands, her head bowed, looking dejected.

“Shu-jie, don’t worry about it,” a woman in a qipao said, walking over. “You’re 27. For someone your age, returning to acting, your performance is already impressive. I heard you worked in administration before. Honestly, that’s a stable job. Why bother with this?”

Shen Shu looked up. Ren Xiaoqi was a former child actress, her career never quite taking off. Despite her early start, she was only 21.

Shen Shu, on the other hand, was 27, nearing thirty.

    Two other onlookers chimed in.

“Hey, I heard you beat out several experienced actresses for this role? No wonder the director isn’t satisfied.”

“Seriously, stop buying those trending topics. If these people decide to expose your past, you won’t be able to defend yourself.”

Shen Shu ignored them; it wasn’t worth the effort.

“27? We’re the same age?” A warm voice echoed from the side of the set.

The onlookers fell silent as Xia Chun approached.

Also dressed in a qipao, she exuded an effortless elegance. A true movie star, her Alpha presence commanding attention.

    The Omegas’ hearts fluttered.

Xia Chun walked over to Shen Shu, smiling at the others. “I ordered some drinks and fruit. Help yourselves.”

As Shen Shu stood up, Xia Chun stopped her. “Can we talk? I might be able to help you get into character.”

“I’d like to think about it myself, thank you,” Shen Shu replied, walking away.

    The other actresses murmured disapprovingly.

    “How rude.”

“Seriously, rejecting Xia Chun’s offer like that.”

No one noticed the complex emotions swirling in Xia Chun’s eyes as she watched Shen Shu’s retreating figure.

Suddenly, someone exclaimed, “Oh my god, Xia Chun, you’re too generous!”

Everyone turned to see two catering trucks parked outside the set. A variety of high-end pastries, ice cream, fruit, and cold drinks were being unloaded.

    Everything looked exquisite.

    “Thank you, Xia Chun!!”

The weather was hot and humid after the rain. The unexpected treat lifted everyone’s spirits, even the director smiled. “Xia Chun, you shouldn’t have.”

Then they realized something was amiss. Xia Chun’s assistants and the crew were placing takeout containers of fruit on the table.

“Are these from you, Xia Chun?” someone asked the catering staff.

“We don’t know who they’re from.”

“Were they delivered to the wrong place?”

“No, they have your production’s name on them.”

Shen Shu’s gaze settled on Zhou Pei, who was standing by the catering trucks, and gave her a slight nod.

It was clear who had sent them.

She walked over. Zhou Pei lowered her voice. “Miss Xu couldn’t make it, so she asked me to arrange this.” She handed Shen Shu a freshly squeezed grape juice.

    Shen Shu took it silently.

Tong Jia had been observing the scene.

Her assistant, taking a bite of durian cake, smiled. “First time I’ve seen a catering truck without a banner or a name. I don’t get it.”

That seemingly careless Xu Jinnan was surprisingly thoughtful.

Shen Shu was just a supporting actress. Neither the lead actors nor Xia Chun had done anything like this. Wouldn’t sending a catering truck under her own name be stealing their thunder?

“If there’s no name, how do we know who sent it? What’s the point?”

    Shen Shu knew the point.

No one else knew Xu Jinnan had arranged this, only her.

The trucks were filled with a variety of luxurious fruits, but not a single grape. Only Shen Shu had grape juice.

She remembered a time when they were eating egg tarts, and Xu Jinnan had specifically bought a grape tart for her.

What girl didn’t like special treatment?

Tong Jia licked her ice cream.

There was another reason for the anonymity. With so many people on set, someone’s curiosity would inevitably be piqued, and they would find out who had sent the treats.

Then no one could accuse Shen Shu of trying to steal the spotlight.

It was a subtle way of showing support.

But that wasn’t the main point.

The main point was that Xu Jinnan had successfully made her presence felt, without even being there.

    It was brilliantly executed.

Her absence made it even more impactful.

Tong Jia imagined having a fight with her girlfriend, and then her girlfriend sending a surprise, but not showing up. It would definitely make her curious.

Suddenly, she felt a pang of envy towards Shen Shu. Her own girlfriend would never do something like this.

However, Xu Jinnan’s absence had nothing to do with Tong Jia’s perceived brilliance. She simply thought Shen Shu didn’t want to see her.

She wasn’t one to impose herself on others.

After dinner, Xu Jinnan napped on the office sofa. Her phone buzzed on the table.

Seeing “Wang Zheng” on the screen, she woke up instantly.

She hadn’t heard from him since he’d told her he was investigating something in Qucheng, almost two months ago. She’d almost forgotten about him.

Wang Zheng: [Six o’clock, Chengyang Cafe]

A little before six, the film crew was preparing to wrap up.

“First time I’ve seen a catering truck without a name. Who could it be from?”

“I think it’s from one of Xia Chun’s admirers. I heard her on the phone, saying something about ‘thank you for the trouble.’”

“I’m so envious of Xia Chun. Beautiful and talented. I also envy Shen Shu… getting to act with her.”

“Did you see her performance just now? She’s better suited for roles like a pure college student!” Ren Xiaoqi said, laughing.

Shen Shu returned to the waiting room, overhearing their snide remarks.

She ignored them, grabbing her bag.

As she was leaving, one of the actresses followed her out.

“Shen Shu, don’t mind them. They’re just jealous.” She reached for Shen Shu’s arm, but Shen Shu dodged her. “Are you leaving? Xia Chun is treating us to dinner tonight. Come with us.”

“Sorry, I have something to do,” Shen Shu said, her tone polite but distant, discouraging further conversation.

Shen Shu had driven herself. Zhou Pei was waiting by her car.

“Miss Xu asked me to take you home.”

Shen Shu remembered Xu Jinnan’s words from last night.

“Get some rest. I won’t bother you for a few days.”

She felt a twinge of… something.

Despite her aloof nature, she couldn’t deny Xu Jinnan’s kindness over the past few weeks. She’d even felt a sense of warmth from her.

She wasn’t intentionally cold towards Xu Jinnan.

It was just… the thought of Xu Jinnan possibly being an Alpha made her uncomfortable.

As Zhou Pei reached for the car door, Shen Shu said, “I’ll do it.” She pulled out her phone. Xu Jinnan’s last message was from yesterday.

She hesitated, then turned off her phone and put it away.

Meanwhile, a taxi was heading towards Chengyang Cafe. The film studio was in the southernmost part of North City, while the cafe was in the east.

A few kilometers into the journey, Xu Jinnan received a call from Wang Zheng.

“Someone’s blocking me. I can’t make it today,” a hoarse male voice said.

    “Who?” Xu Jinnan asked.

“Don’t come. I’ll call you again.”

Before she could ask anything else, the line went dead.

Xu Jinnan told the driver to pull over, her brow furrowing. What was so secretive about Qucheng? Was Xu Tao the one blocking him?

Back at the hotel, it was past seven. She ordered room service and ate a simple meal. The suite was empty, a commercial for shower gel playing on the large screen.

She stared at it for a moment, then sent a message to Zhou Pei.

Zhou Pei replied quickly: [I was just about to tell you. The director invited Miss Shen to a cast dinner.]

Xu Jinnan checked with Tong Jia, who confirmed she would be there. When Tong Jia mentioned Xia Chun, Xu Jinnan didn’t say anything more.

As long as Shen Shu was safe.

    The rest…

Xu Jinnan turned off the TV, suddenly finding it uninteresting.

Outside a private dining room at the restaurant, Shen Shu stepped out for some air after two drinks. She hadn’t intended to come, but the director had personally invited her; she couldn’t refuse their first cast dinner.

She wasn’t a naive newcomer. This was just like business etiquette.

She could drink, she simply disliked the burning sensation of alcohol. She exhaled slowly, noticing someone approaching, and looked up instinctively.

Xia Chun offered her a bottle of iced tea. “Are you alright?”

Shen Shu didn’t take it, walking past her.

Xia Chun reached out, stopping her. “Ah Shu.”

Shen Shu stopped, her expression cold and indifferent. “Xia Chun, we’re not that close.”

A look of pain flickered across Xia Chun’s face. “You’re still blaming me for leaving, aren’t you? I had my reasons. If I hadn’t left…”

“Excuse me,” Shen Shu interrupted. “I’m married. I’m not interested in hearing about this.”

    “Married?”

Xia Chun shook her head. “You don’t love her. I know you better than anyone.”

Shen Shu finally looked at her.

“I knew it was too late when I heard Xu Jinnan had forced you into this marriage.”

“Ah Shu, you know how I feel about you. Otherwise, with my status, why would I take such a small role?”

Someone emerged from the dining room, glancing at them.

“I’m married,” Shen Shu repeated. “You know what Xu Jinnan is like. If she finds out you said these things to me, you know what will happen.”

“I’m not afraid of her,” Xia Chun said firmly. “I’m here for you, Shen Shu. I’ll protect you. I’ll help you.”

Shen Shu scoffed. “Help me with what?”

    “Help you leave her.”

    Passersby glanced at them curiously.

“Enough, Xia Chun,” Shen Shu said coldly. “You just want to hear how miserable I am without you. Well, I’m doing just fine.”

Xu Tao rarely called Xu Jinnan, but he’d invited her home for dinner.

She’d been busy the past few days. Investments didn’t guarantee returns; the risks were proportional to the potential rewards. But there had been some gains. A property she’d acquired recently at a low price had been included in the city’s redevelopment plan.

The demolition compensation would be enough to buy three more buildings.

Perhaps that was why Xu Tao had called.

As Xu Jinnan entered the villa, she saw Lu Yun watering the plants in the meticulously manicured garden. She didn’t recognize some of the flowers.

    “Mom,” she called out.

Thinking Lu Yun was too engrossed to hear her, she called out again. From the startled look on Lu Yun’s face, Xu Jinnan realized she’d been lost in thought.

“You’re home?” Lu Yun asked, momentarily confused.

She didn’t even know Xu Jinnan was coming?

“Dad called me. Didn’t he tell you?”

Lu Yun smiled. “Oh, he didn’t mention it. Probably trying to surprise me. You should have told me you were coming. I would have made your favorite dishes.”

    Xu Jinnan followed her inside.

Xu Tao and Xu Li were talking on the sofa in the living room.

Xu Li saw her first. “Aunt Lu said you were busy. It seems only Dad can make you come home.”

Lu Yun’s expression was strained. She glanced at Xu Li, a warning in her eyes, and told Xu Jinnan to sit down while she went to the kitchen.

Xu Jinnan handed a few bags to a servant. “Someone went to Qucheng for me and brought back some local specialties. I thought you might like them.” She glanced at Xu Tao as she spoke.

“Hmm, good. You’re finally learning to be thoughtful. Go tell your mother what you want to eat. And we’ll talk about your recent projects later,” Xu Tao said.

He seemed normal, clearly unaware of Wang Zheng’s investigation in Qucheng.

Xu Jinnan nodded, and Xu Tao resumed his conversation with Xu Li.

“You’ll oversee this personally. It’s a major project, so we need to be meticulous,” he told her. They were discussing the land Xu Jinnan had acquired and the plans for its development.

As Xu Li agreed, she glanced at Xu Jinnan, a smug smile playing on her lips.

    Xu Jinnan looked away, unimpressed.

It was rumored that Xu Tao and Lu Yun doted on their youngest daughter, but from what she’d observed, only Lu Yun truly pampered her. Xu Tao’s relationship with Xu Li seemed more genuine, filled with playful banter and genuine concern, unlike his interactions with her… She couldn’t quite put her finger on it.

A strange, unsettling feeling washed over her, a familiar wave of negativity and discomfort.

Pushing it aside, she went to the kitchen to speak to Lu Yun, then went upstairs.

She opened the hidden room. The framed photo was still on the table.

The frame was secured with screws. Xu Jinnan had to find a screwdriver to open it.

She’d felt like she’d overlooked something last time, and she’d finally realized what it was. Why would anyone secure a photo so tightly?

She removed the wooden frame, the back of the photo falling to the floor.

There was something written on the back, but it wasn’t a numerical code, as she’d expected.

‘One day, I’ll take you with me…’

‘I’ll take you all to… hell!!!’

    ‘Want to play with me?’

The handwriting was childish, the letters rounded and uneven.

As she read the last line, the image of a child’s face flashed through her mind…

    A blurry image.

Feeling disturbed, she put the photo in her pocket and was about to leave the hidden room when she bumped into Lu Yun.

Lu Yun frowned. “What are you doing? Back in that creepy room looking for those… clothes?”

A shiver ran down Xu Jinnan’s spine as the cool air from the vent brushed against her sweaty skin.

“What’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell?” Lu Yun asked, reaching for her hand with a concerned expression.

Xu Jinnan was still thinking about the three sentences on the back of the photo. “No, I was just looking for some clothes to take with me,” she said casually.

“Oh, I’ll pack them for you. Zhou Pei can deliver them later. Come on, I made some pumpkin cakes. Try them while they’re still warm…”

    Chapter 23

Xu Jinnan was wide awake now.

In this world, saying someone was “tired” was the same as saying they were incompetent in bed.

Seeing Shen Shu carrying something towards the balcony, Xu Jinnan stood up abruptly, ready to argue. She’d only taken a few steps when she heard the sound of shattering glass.

A clear glass vase lay in pieces on the balcony floor, a potted pothos lying amongst the shards.

“Don’t move,” Xu Jinnan said, looking at the broken glass near Shen Shu’s feet.

    “It’s fine,” Shen Shu replied.

    Then she hesitated.

Before Xu Jinnan could react, Shen Shu turned slightly, reaching up to clip a small, triangular piece of fabric to the clothesline.

It was white, almost translucent when wet.

Xu Jinnan’s gaze lingered on the delicate garment for a moment before snapping back to Shen Shu’s face.

Shen Shu pulled the trash can closer and bent down to pick up the larger pieces of glass, her earlobes flushed a delicate pink. “It’s getting late. You should go.”

Xu Jinnan, looking at the sharp shards in Shen Shu’s hand, said, “Let me do it.”

    “Where are the gloves?”

“It’s fine. There aren’t many pieces,” Shen Shu replied.

Then she gasped, a thin trickle of blood welling up on her finger.

Xu Jinnan felt a surge of irritation. “Why are you so stubborn?”

Shen Shu glanced at her finger. It was just a scratch, the blood already starting to clot. It was nothing.

    A shadow fell over her.

Before she could react, she was lifted off the ground.

    “Xu Jinnan!” she exclaimed, startled.

    Xu Jinnan held her closer.

“Xu Jinnan!” Shen Shu repeated, her arm pressed against Xu Jinnan’s warm skin, her gaze drawn to the smooth, pale curve of her neck. The air was filled with the clean scent of Xu Jinnan’s pheromones, with a hint of alcohol…

Her breath hitched, a strange weakness spreading through her body.

Xu Jinnan didn’t reply, carrying her into the bedroom and setting her down.

“Stay here,” she said, in a tone that brooked no argument.

She can lift me with one arm, and yet she claims to be “tired?” Could she even handle it if we…

Xu Jinnan was still fixated on the comment.

She tossed her own towel onto the floor and bent down to pick up the broken glass.

Shen Shu’s heart raced. Pheromones could be replicated, but the feeling someone gave you… that was unique.

She watched Xu Jinnan through the bedroom window, lost in thought. A possibility occurred to her, and her heart sank.

An hour later, after a brief rain shower, Tong Jia met Xu Jinnan for coffee.

“What’s with the spaced-out look? Did you and your wife have a fight?” Tong Jia took a bite of cake.

After pretending for so long, hearing “your wife” constantly was starting to get to her.

With Shen Shu’s personality, even if we were really married, we probably wouldn’t fight, Xu Jinnan thought.

She couldn’t put her finger on it, but Shen Shu had been acting strangely lately.

Tong Jia jumped to a conclusion. “Unsatisfactory sex life? You definitely have that look.”

Xu Jinnan glared at her, not deigning to respond.

Despite her easygoing nature, Tong Jia had learned where to draw the line with Xu Jinnan. When she was genuinely annoyed, it was best to stay quiet.

She changed the subject, discussing Shen Shu’s progress on set.

Shen Shu had been doing well over the past two weeks. According to online buzz, she was gaining popularity.

“The leads haven’t even trended yet, but your wife is already making headlines,” Tong Jia said. “And guess what? The director added a few more scenes for her.”

    “Why?” Xu Jinnan asked.

“Because she’s popular! Passion is important these days, but so is hype. Everyone needs to make money.” After meeting Xu Jinnan a few times, Tong Jia found her difficult to read. Sometimes, she was down-to-earth, buying street food, other times, completely aloof, seemingly unaware of ordinary struggles.

    “Oh,” Xu Jinnan replied, unconcerned.

“Our second female lead quit,” Tong Jia continued, her voice laced with annoyance. “After the director gave Shen Shu more scenes, she threw a fit, demanding more screen time for herself. The director told her off, and now, just as we’re about to start filming, she’s refusing to act. Fine, let her quit.”

“But I heard a big name is interested in the script and might take the role for a lower salary.”

“Oh,” Xu Jinnan said again, her tone indifferent.

Tong Jia tucked her silver hair behind her ear. “Just a heads-up, now that she’s trending, some of the comments online might… upset you.”

“What kind of comments?” Xu Jinnan picked up her iced lemonade.

Tong Jia showed her some Weibo posts. Besides the trending topic about Shen Shu, there were several other posts trying to piggyback on the hype.

    Two malicious comments stood out:

Righteous Gentleman: #WhatIsARealQipaoBeauty# This face is so fake. [Photo]

IsItLuce: #WhatIsARealQipaoBeauty# Nice figure, but her face looks… generic. And too much filter. [Photo]

Xu Jinnan created a new Weibo account, right then and there, naming it – RichSisterWithLotsOfLove

Tong Jia rolled her eyes. Rich people.

When she checked Weibo again, the entire conversation had changed, even those two haters had switched sides.

Righteous Gentleman: #WhatIsARealQipaoBeauty# Holy shit, she’s gorgeous!

IsItLuce: #WhatIsARealQipaoBeauty# I was wrong. She’s stunning in person! And she’s a newcomer. Supporting her!

    Tong Jia: “…” Money talks.

She sent Xu Jinnan a WeChat message: [Sister, you’re rich. By the way… I have a Weibo account too. Lots of followers.]

    Xu Jinnan ignored her.

Tong Jia tried again: [Your fairy isn’t having a good day. Better go comfort her.]

Xu Jinnan: [[Transfer of 5000 yuan]]

Tong Jia: “…!” I think I’ve found a way to get rich.

Xu Jinnan turned off her phone and messaged Shen Shu, asking if she was home. Half an hour later, she received a single, cold reply:

    “Yes.”

She felt like a lovesick puppy, chasing after someone who clearly wasn’t interested.

Xu Jinnan smiled wryly, entering the apartment in her bunny slippers.

A script lay on the sofa.

“Get your own water,” Shen Shu said.

    Xu Jinnan: “…Okay.”

They hadn’t seen each other since that night. They’d barely spoken, even on WeChat. Xu Jinnan had been busy with the company, and Shen Shu hadn’t been very responsive either.

She’d always gotten her own water before. Today, Shen Shu’s tone seemed deliberately cold.

“How’s filming going?” Xu Jinnan asked.

    “Fine.”

    “Any problems?”

    “No.”

    “…”

Xu Jinnan paused. “Did I do something to offend you?” She wasn’t used to this atmosphere. If Shen Shu truly disliked her, she would simply stop coming. But she needed to know why.

When Xu Jinnan wasn’t smiling, her phoenix eyes had an intimidating quality.

Shen Shu met her gaze, a flicker of fear in her eyes despite her efforts to control it.

Her expression cooled. Xu Jinnan had no right to be condescending in her home—

“Was I too harsh that night?” Xu Jinnan asked, looking down at her. “I didn’t mean to be. I was just worried you would get hurt.”

    Shen Shu froze.

It dawned on her what Xu Jinnan was referring to.

    Shen Shu: “…”

Xu Jinnan’s brow furrowed slightly, a thoughtful expression on her face.

Shen Shu quickly composed herself, looking away. “No, it wasn’t you,” she said, walking over to the sofa.

    Fine.

Xu Jinnan tapped her fingers against a glass at the breakfast bar, glancing at Shen Shu’s dry lips. She poured a glass of water and walked over to her.

Shen Shu’s gaze fell on the offered glass. Just as Xu Jinnan was about to withdraw it, she took it.

Her mind kept replaying that night at the hotel, superimposing Xu Jinnan’s image with the figure from the bathroom… Both her instincts and her senses told her it was Xu Jinnan.

The thought, once planted, grew like a weed, taking root in her mind.

That’s why she’d been avoiding her.

Seeing Shen Shu’s continued indifference, Xu Jinnan stood up.

“Get some rest. I won’t bother you for a few days.”

The next morning, as Xu Jinnan was busy with her investments, her phone buzzed.

    She ignored it.

But a moment later, a thought struck her, and she picked it up.

A call came in at the same time.

    It was Tong Jia.

Xu Jinnan sighed. “…You have too much time on your hands.”

    “CEO Xu, busy?”

Xu Jinnan said flatly, “Yes, goodbye.”

“Busy, busy, so busy you’re going to lose your wife.”

Xu Jinnan put the phone back to her ear, remaining silent.

Tong Jia chuckled, pleased with herself. “Frankly, CEO Xu, you’re beautiful, charming, and most importantly, rich. But I have to say, this time, you might lose.”

    Xu Jinnan: “?”

“Tsk, tsk. Xia Chun, the one taking over the second female lead role. And guess what? She has a steamy scene with your wife today.”

    Xu Jinnan frowned. “Who?”

“Are you still asleep? You haven’t heard of the award-winning actress Xia Chun? Let me send you a picture to wake you up.”

Xu Jinnan opened Tong Jia’s WeChat message. The photo showed a tall, short-haired woman with a striking presence, her profile exquisite, smiling at Shen Shu with an almost… affectionate look.

Shen Shu, in her Nightingale costume, was actually smiling back.

Tong Jia’s gleeful voice echoed from the phone. “An award-winning actress, gazing at your wife adoringly. She’s clearly after her.”

    Xu Jinnan: “…”

No wonder the name sounded familiar.

Xia Chun was none other than the protagonist’s love interest in Savage Lover.

    Shen Shu’s love interest.

    Chapter 22

Xu Jinnan sat down slowly and picked up the papers.

Shen Shu was utterly disillusioned with her family, determined to escape their clutches. She no longer needed to sacrifice herself for them.

Especially after the incidents with Cai Ying and Chen Xiaxia.

It seemed there was no reason for her to continue this charade.

A divorce was fine. Shen Shu’s career was back on track. If she encountered any problems in the future, Xu Jinnan could help her as a friend…

But… had Shen Shu made this decision without any hesitation? Was she really that undesirable?

Lost in thought, she heard footsteps approaching from the balcony. She looked up as Shen Shu walked towards her.

“I drafted this when we got married,” Shen Shu said, seeing the papers in Xu Jinnan’s hands. She walked past the sofa towards the kitchen, her tone casual. “I found it while looking for something under the coffee table.”

    While looking for something…

So, she wasn’t asking for a divorce?

Xu Jinnan glanced at the coffee table. Shen Shu had a study; why would she keep important documents here?

    It didn’t matter.

The corners of her lips curved upwards, a sense of relief washing over her.

“So, what’s for dinner?” she asked.

Before they could decide, Shen Shu received a call from Cai Ying. Walking into the living room, phone in hand, she stopped in surprise – Xu Jinnan was washing vegetables in the sink.

She’d assumed Xu Jinnan’s earlier offer to cook was a joke.

    “You’re actually cooking?”

“I’m quite good at it,” Xu Jinnan replied.

“…” Cai Ying’s voice exploded from the phone. “What are you two doing?!”

    Shen Shu: “…”

She hung up and sent Cai Ying a photo of Xu Jinnan cooking.

    Cai Ying: [!!!]

Cai Ying: [We need to find an exorcist.]

    Shen Shu: [?]

Cai Ying: [To get rid of whatever’s possessing her! I think she’s been body-snatched!]

Shen Shu smiled. It was a joke, but not far from the truth.

She watched Xu Jinnan in the kitchen.

She was wearing an apron, her light brown hair tied back with a chopstick, her pale arms even more luminous under the kitchen lights, a faint bruise visible on her elbow.

Her arm hadn’t fully healed, had it? This person seemed prone to injuries.

Shen Shu thought, If she really is possessed, like Cai Ying said, I’d prefer the ghost.

After all, people were far more terrifying.

Half an hour later, two bowls of tomato and egg noodles sat on the table.

After a few silent bites, Xu Jinnan chuckled. “Is it that bad?”

“No,” Shen Shu replied honestly. “I was expecting a feast.”

    “…”

“Your fridge is practically empty. I did my best.”

Shen Shu’s lips curved upwards. “I know.”

She looked down, a lie on her lips.

She’d taken out the divorce agreement that morning, but while talking to Xu Jinnan on the balcony, she’d changed her mind.

After what had happened with Cai Ying and Chen Xiaxia, divorcing now would only invite more trouble from people like Yin Xue. The former Xu Jinnan had been a demon, but now, she was a shield, protecting Shen Shu and her friends.

Besides… she liked this new Xu Jinnan.

She would revisit the divorce later.

“What did you want to tell me?” Xu Jinnan asked.

Shen Shu’s gaze lingered on the Winnie the Pooh ears on Xu Jinnan’s apron.

She’d bought the apron online but had never worn it, finding it too childish.

“I… went to an audition today,” she said.

    “Really? That’s great!”

Xu Jinnan clearly knew about her past, but her lack of surprise was still unexpected.

“There are many ways to live. Do what makes you happy. Why exhaust yourself for others? While you still have me and the Xu family’s support, use it to your advantage. Do what you want. If you want to act, go for it. I’ll have your back.”

Even Cai Ying had tried to dissuade her from returning to acting.

It was unrealistic to re-enter the industry after so long.

Shen Shu hadn’t thought about it too deeply. The phone call had simply reminded her of her time in the drama club.

Back then, she still had dreams.

    She had still felt joy.

So, she wanted to find a new way to live. Like Xu Jinnan had said, why not live for herself for once?

    “Xu Jinnan.”

    “Yes?”

    “It’s delicious.”

Shen Shu’s lips curved into a genuine smile, and Xu Jinnan felt a strange flutter in her chest.

A week passed, and the box remained unopened.

Lu Yun called, saying she wanted to visit. Xu Jinnan consulted Shen Shu. “She might stay for a few hours.”

    Shen Shu didn’t hesitate.

Twenty minutes later, she opened the door.

    Shen Shu: “…”

Xu Jinnan stood there with a suitcase. “I was afraid she would notice something… Didn’t you say it was okay?”

    What was with that look?

Shen Shu checked her phone and saw the full message – …or maybe overnight.

There had been a delay, and she hadn’t seen the second part before replying.

“Should I leave?” Xu Jinnan asked.

Shen Shu stepped aside. “…Come in.”

Xu Jinnan hung up her clothes. Then Lu Yun called again, saying she couldn’t make it after all.

Lu Yun had insisted on visiting, even demanding a specific time, and now she was canceling? Xu Jinnan called her, but the line was busy.

Just like last time… Lu Yun was acting very strangely.

Then she received a voice message from Lu Yun, her tone normal, saying something had come up.

    Xu Jinnan didn’t press further.

But… something was definitely wrong with the Xu family.

Shen Shu walked in from the balcony, carrying laundry, and saw Xu Jinnan packing her suitcase. “Just leave your things here, in case she decides to visit again,” she said.

Xu Jinnan agreed. She wasn’t short of clothes.

As she hung her clothes back up, Shen Shu walked past her, and Xu Jinnan caught a glimpse of black lace in her hand.

Shen Shu cooked two simple dishes: stir-fried vegetables and green peppers with meat. After dinner, Xu Jinnan took the dishes to the sink.

For a fleeting moment, Shen Shu had a strange thought – this felt… domestic, almost fulfilling a fantasy she hadn’t realized she had.

An hour later, Shen Shu stood up. “I’m going to take a shower.”

Xu Jinnan, fiddling with the box, replied, “Okay, I’ll be leaving soon.”

“…” Shen Shu said, “I’m not asking you to leave.” She usually stayed up until eleven.

Xu Jinnan looked up, surprised, but Shen Shu had already closed the bathroom door.

The box, with its multiple locks, seemed to contain something important, so she hadn’t left it at the hotel. It wasn’t even nine o’clock yet. She looked down at the box again.

Faint sounds came from the bathroom – the rustling of fabric, the gentle splash of water…

Xu Jinnan couldn’t focus on the box.

Her mind wasn’t in the right place lately.

She put down the box and grabbed a drink from the fridge, realizing it was strawberry wine. It was sweet and low in alcohol.

    Her throat was dry.

She finished the drink quickly. The original Xu Jinnan had a high tolerance for alcohol; this was like water to her. Xu Jinnan didn’t think much of it.

Shen Shu emerged from the bathroom, wrapped in a bathrobe, and stopped when she saw Xu Jinnan asleep on the sofa.

She lay curled on her side, one leg draped over the other, the long, flowing skirt revealing a sliver of smooth calf.

Perhaps sensing her gaze, Xu Jinnan opened her eyes slightly.

“You seem… tired,” Shen Shu said.

    Xu Jinnan: “…?”

    You try dealing with this.

    Chapter 21

Xu Jinnan tossed her phone onto the sofa, then, looking down at her pajamas, stood up.

The hotel closet contained only the two dresses she’d bought on the way. She liked dresses; they were easy to put on and take off.

As she finished changing, her phone buzzed with a message from Shen Shu: [Busy this afternoon. Later.]

Xu Jinnan raised an eyebrow. Had she been stood up? Shen Shu was a busy woman.

She replied, “Okay,” then, suddenly restless, called Zhou Pei and decided to visit a few more companies.

She still had some money left; she might as well invest it.

After visiting two gaming companies without finding anything promising, she dismissed Zhou Pei and went to a cafe, idly flipping through a magazine.

    “Long time no see, Nannan.”

    Xu Jinnan looked up.

She didn’t recognize the woman and gave a noncommittal hum.

The woman sat down across from her.

“It was Yin Xue’s fault, not mine. We’ve known each other for years. Why are you targeting me?”

From her tone, Xu Jinnan guessed it might be Song Ronghui.

She didn’t have a good impression of her. “Can’t you tell I’m in a bad mood?” she said flatly.

“Oh? Trouble in paradise with your little plaything?”

What the hell? Xu Jinnan frowned. “You can leave now.”

The woman sighed. “Clearly, you’re not in a good mood. Fine, I’ll leave. But don’t forget about next month’s… event. You can bring your… wife.”

As the woman turned to leave, Xu Jinnan put down her magazine and watched her, her eyes narrowing slightly.

Outside the cafe, Song Ronghui pulled out her phone.

“Something’s definitely off with Xu Jinnan. Tell Yin Xue I’ll look into it.”

The brief encounter had soured Xu Jinnan’s mood.

As she was paying her bill, Tong Jia sent her a photo – several women in qipaos, standing and sitting in a white studio.

    She spotted Shen Shu instantly.

Her dark hair was pinned up with a silver hairpin, a high-slit, dark green qipao accentuating her long legs. She tilted her head slightly, her elegant, aloof beauty radiating from the screen.

Forty minutes later, Xu Jinnan followed Tong Jia into the film studio through a side entrance.

“It’s almost her turn. Sure you don’t want to watch in person?” Tong Jia offered Xu Jinnan a can of iced tea.

“Can’t I see her from here?” Xu Jinnan gestured towards the screen, where Shen Shu was standing outside the filming area, watching the other actors with a serious expression.

It was a Republican-era drama, and Shen Shu was auditioning for the role of a femme fatale assassin named Nightingale.

The character’s backstory was tragic: a young lady from a wealthy family, searching for her lost lover, only to be betrayed and abused, losing her innocence and dignity. Her abuser even branded her leg with the character for “slut.”

When she finally found her lover, he was married with children.

Driven mad, Nightingale murdered his entire family, becoming a cold-blooded assassin, using her beauty to lure her victims. The brand on her leg became her mark in the underworld.

    “That’s… complicated.”

“It’s only three scenes,” Tong Jia replied. “It’s just an audition. She might not even get the part. Why so worried?”

Xu Jinnan felt a pang of annoyance.

Shen Shu wasn’t one for blind confidence. If she was auditioning, she was prepared.

Tong Jia continued, “It’s a challenging role. Although she only appears three times, the character is emotionally complex. But if she plays it well, she could be more popular than the supporting actress, or even the lead.”

Xu Jinnan wasn’t familiar with the industry, but she trusted Tong Jia’s professional judgment.

    “Here we go.”

As Tong Jia spoke, Shen Shu walked onto the set, and Xu Jinnan felt a knot of tension in her stomach.

It was the scene where Nightingale, after years of searching, finally sees her lover again. She stands across the street, watching him with another woman, their voices low and intimate. Then their eyes meet.

A typical portrayal would show a progression of emotions: joy, disappointment, despair…

But Shen Shu’s expression was cold, the emotions swirling in her eyes. In the final thirty seconds, a slow smile spread across her face, her eyes curving like crescent moons.

A chill ran down Xu Jinnan’s spine. She remembered the original Xu Jinnan’s fate in the book. Shen Shu had personally carved out her scent glands.

    Xu Jinnan: “…”

“She’s got it,” Tong Jia said, nodding approvingly.

As soon as the audition ended, the director dismissed the other actors.

Xu Jinnan took a sip of tea.

“Underestimated her, didn’t you?” Tong Jia asked. “Why not just start a company for her? Why this secrecy, even from your wife?”

    Xu Jinnan: “…”

Sometimes, Tong Jia was too perceptive for her own good.

She’d presented herself as a committed partner in their first meeting, but now she was clearly just teasing.

“My wife is proud. I can’t just hand things to her,” Xu Jinnan replied casually.

Tong Jia: “…” Was she being fed dog food?

Xu Jinnan watched Shen Shu leave the set.

If Shen Shu knew she was here, she might not have agreed to the audition. After the incident with her family, she was likely under a lot of pressure.

And if Xu Jinnan started a company for her, the ownership would be public. That’s why she’d chosen to invest through Tong Jia.

“I have to say, your wife has an amazing figure,” Tong Jia said, naming a letter. “D-cup, at least?”

“…Tong Jia,” Xu Jinnan said, “is it appropriate for an Omega and an Alpha to be discussing this?”

Tong Jia shrugged. “Sorry, my bad.” Blame the novels.

Xu Jinnan thought, Tong Jia seemed so serious in the book. Why is she so… playful now?

As she was about to leave, Tong Jia added, “Better hurry after her. You’re practically drooling over your wife.”

    Xu Jinnan: “…”

Xu Jinnan arrived at Shen Shu’s apartment a little after six.

Shen Shu’s gaze lingered on her for a moment as she handed her the bunny slippers.

Xu Jinnan was wearing a light-colored, floral slip dress, the fitted design accentuating her figure. The low neckline hinted at the curves beneath.

The dress, combined with her delicate features and long, wavy hair, was stunning.

She seems to like dresses, Shen Shu thought.

After changing her shoes, Xu Jinnan noticed Shen Shu heading towards the balcony and followed her.

Several potted plants, including pothos and succulents, lined the balcony.

Shen Shu, in a casual dress, was watering them. Xu Jinnan, remembering the elegant qipao from earlier, averted her gaze from Shen Shu’s graceful figure. “Why don’t you grow flowers?” she asked.

“They’re difficult to take care of,” Shen Shu replied.

Xu Jinnan’s gaze shifted from the glistening water droplets on the leaves back to Shen Shu, finally settling on her slender neck.

    Her throat tightened.

Memories she’d tried to suppress for a week came flooding back – that moment in the bathroom, when she’d almost touched that very spot.

“The box is on the table,” Shen Shu said, turning around and meeting Xu Jinnan’s gaze. Xu Jinnan’s heart skipped a beat. “Right,” she replied quickly.

She didn’t move. “What are your plans now?” she asked.

Shen Shu thought for a moment. “Pursue something I… enjoy.”

Those were Xu Jinnan’s own words.

Xu Jinnan smiled faintly. “Whatever it is, I’m sure you’ll excel at it.”

Shen Shu put down the watering can and looked up at her. The sunlight made Xu Jinnan’s skin and clothes glow.

    Excel?

She wasn’t even sure she believed that herself.

She had been so nervous during the audition.

Her expression softened. “I’ll tell you about it later… I still owe you a meal. We can settle that tonight.”

    Xu Jinnan agreed cheerfully.

She returned to the living room and went straight to the box on the coffee table.

A small stack of A4 papers caught her attention before the box. Five characters were clearly visible: Divorce Agreement.

    Ah, a farewell dinner.

    Chapter 20

“Let her go, and I’ll agree to anything.”

Yin Xue’s smile vanished. “You like her that much?” She gripped Xu Jinnan’s chin, forcing her to turn around, her lips inches from Xu Jinnan’s.

Listening to the commotion outside, Yin Xue let out a twisted laugh. “Anything?”

Xu Jinnan was on the verge of breaking, unable to speak, desperate to get away from this lunatic. Yin Xue yanked her hair back, forcing her head down.

Yin Xue had produced a small camera. A flash went off in the dim light, and Xu Jinnan squeezed her eyes shut. It was then that she saw her opportunity, kicking out hard.

Yin Xue, not expecting such force after two injections, doubled over in pain.

Xu Jinnan didn’t hesitate, snatching the camera and hitting Yin Xue with it…

When Shen Shu entered the room with the police, it was in chaos. The air was thick with perfume, alcohol, and a mixture of Alpha and Omega pheromones.

A faint, sunny scent lingered amongst the others.

Yin Xue lay unconscious on the floor, Cai Ying and Chen Xiaxia passed out on the sofa. Xu Jinnan was nowhere to be seen.

Shen Shu helped the police and paramedics load Cai Ying and Chen Xiaxia into the ambulance.

Cai Ying, less affected than Chen Xiaxia, despite her weakened state, managed a weak smile. “Seeing you is such a blessing.”

Shen Shu, her worry and anger giving way to amusement, asked, “Did you see Xu Jinnan?”

She leaned closer as Cai Ying gestured weakly.

“Yin Xue injected her twice. She said it was the same drug you were given. I saw her go into the bathroom. There’s a hidden door in there.” The drug finally took hold, and Cai Ying passed out.

A paramedic asked Shen Shu if she wanted to accompany them to the hospital, but she shook her head, looking back at the extravagant Emperor Hotel.

Xu Jinnan wasn’t answering her calls. She had a bad feeling.

Moments later, she saw the police cordoning off the area, evacuating the building. An officer told her, “You can’t go in. There’s a rutting Alpha inside.”

Shen Shu’s heart sank. Xu Jinnan is still inside. She’s an Omega…

Before, she’d wished for Xu Jinnan’s demise. But now, she couldn’t deny her concern. Xu Jinnan had come here for her.

“The Alpha might be my wife. She has a mental illness. If it’s her, I’m the only one who can calm her down.” This wasn’t enough to convince the officer. Shen Shu continued, “I can take a pheromone blocker and go in with your team.” A pheromone blocker would temporarily suppress her own scent and protect her from the Alpha’s pheromones. It only lasted for ten minutes and had adverse side effects, especially for women.

Shen Shu followed them inside. The hotel was eerily empty, music still playing faintly in some of the vacant rooms.

They’d been told the Alpha was on the top floor, but it turned out to be a man. The officers told Shen Shu to leave.

She nodded, then took the elevator down to the eighth floor, heading towards room 888, as instructed in the text message.

    “Xu Jinnan?!”

Inside the room, images flashed silently on a large screen, the colored lights creating a dizzying effect. Shen Shu pulled out an Omega suppressant from her bag and walked towards the bathroom.

    She opened the door.

The room was pitch black. As she reached for the light switch, a powerful wave of Alpha pheromones washed over her, sending a jolt through her body.

The pheromone blocker had worn off.

For a moment, she couldn’t breathe, a wave of panic washing over her.

Despite her mental resistance, her body yielded to the overwhelming Alpha pressure.

A figure emerged from the darkness, pinning her against the counter. It was a woman. She grasped Shen Shu’s hand, pressing it against the mirror, her other hand covering Shen Shu’s.

Shen Shu couldn’t move. She felt the woman’s breath on her neck, her fingers intertwining with Shen Shu’s…

    Their hands were clasped together.

    Like lovers.

    It all happened so fast.

Then Shen Shu smelled the strong, sunny scent, and her mind went blank…

The Omega’s pheromones were intoxicating. Xu Jinnan, after calling Professor Qin from behind the hidden door, had passed out. But the sweet scent had roused her, triggering an instinctive reaction.

It was the primal Alpha instinct, amplified by the volatile state of her secondary differentiation.

An Alpha’s first rut was a terrifying thing.

Her eyes, adjusting to the darkness, fixed on the Omega’s smooth, pale neck. Possessiveness and desire surged through her veins. She opened her mouth—

Shen Shu, losing her composure, let out a soft gasp. She’d never experienced anything like this before.

Shame and fear washed over her.

“Xu Jinnan!” Her voice trembled, the words barely audible.

Xu Jinnan’s lips froze a hair’s breadth from Shen Shu’s skin. She opened her eyes, seeing her reflection in the mirror – a predatory beast looming over Shen Shu.

A flicker of awareness brought her back to her senses.

She let go abruptly, stumbling back and crashing against the tiled floor. She scrambled to her feet and fled.

Shen Shu was found by the police.

After dealing with the Alpha on the top floor, they’d detected another, more potent Alpha presence in the building. They’d found the room, but the Alpha was gone. Only Shen Shu remained, in the bathroom.

After a brief questioning, the officer asked, “Was that your wife?”

Shen Shu hesitated, then said, “I don’t know her.”

She wasn’t in heat. After splashing cold water on her face and resting for ten minutes, she gradually regained her composure. The sunny scent of Alpha pheromones still clung to her.

It had been too dark to see clearly; her senses had been overwhelmed. But she remembered that scent.

    Xu Jinnan…

Her phone rang, interrupting her thoughts.

She saw Xu Jinnan’s name on the screen and took a deep breath.

    “Hello?”

“Miss Shen, this is Professor Qin from the hospital.”

“Miss Shen, Xu Jinnan is with me now. She asked me to tell you that she heard you and the police outside, and to protect her identity, she left.”

“How is she?” Shen Shu asked.

“She was injected with two drugs. It’s a bit complicated, which is why I’m calling you. But don’t worry, she’ll be fine.”

Shen Shu was silent for a moment. “Thank you.”

“When did she arrive?” she asked.

“Half an hour ago,” Professor Qin replied.

Shen Shu stared at her phone as the screen went dark.

Half an hour ago. The person in the bathroom couldn’t have been Xu Jinnan.

But if it wasn’t her, why had she reacted to the name?

    And the identical pheromone scent…

Cai Ying’s father was furious, vowing to make Yin Xue pay. Song Ronghui pleaded for leniency, but Lu Yun, upon hearing the news, issued a warning to both Yin Xue and the Song family.

For the next week, Shen Shu stayed at the hospital, caring for Cai Ying. Chen Xiaxia’s mother had taken her home.

During rounds, Shen Shu asked Cai Ying’s doctor about the identical pheromone scents.

“Identical pheromones are biologically impossible,” the doctor explained. “But with advancements in technology, it’s possible to alter the scent of pheromones, like cosmetic surgery.”

After the doctor left, Cai Ying, watching Shen Shu’s thoughtful expression, dismissed her doubts.

“I regained consciousness briefly. I heard that crazy Yin Xue say she knew Xu Jinnan was an Omega. They were together for so long; it must be true.”

It made sense, but Shen Shu couldn’t shake the feeling that something wasn’t right.

“I’m sorry you were dragged into this,” she said to Cai Ying. Yin Xue had done this because of Xu Jinnan, but Shen Shu felt responsible.

“Don’t mention it. If anyone’s to blame, it’s Xu Jinnan…” Cai Ying paused. “How is she?”

“She messaged this morning. She said she’s fine.”

“That’s surprising. You’re actually talking to her?”

Cai Ying’s eyes widened. “That’s surprising! You’re chatting? You don’t hate her anymore?”

    Shen Shu: “…”

Cai Ying continued reluctantly, “I still hate her, but what she said to Yin Xue… made me see her in a slightly different light.” She held up her thumb and index finger, indicating a tiny amount.

Shen Shu chuckled. “What did she say?”

“Let her go, and I’ll agree to anything.”

Shen Shu paused, a strange feeling washing over her. From Cai Ying’s description, Xu Jinnan had been under the influence of two drugs, practically helpless.

No one had ever made such a sacrifice for her.

Cai Ying pursed her lips, offering a tentative theory. “I think… she might actually like you.”

    Shen Shu: “…”

Cai Ying only knew that Xu Jinnan was an Omega, nothing else.

Shen Shu admired her imagination, urging her to rest. She went to the waiting area outside.

As if on cue, she received a WeChat message from Xu Jinnan.

Xu Jinnan: [When will you be home?]

    She replied quickly: [Why?]

    Xu Jinnan: [?]

    Shen Shu: [?]

Xu Jinnan: [I figured out some new combinations for the box.]

    “…”

Shen Shu scrolled through their recent chat history. They’d been talking more lately. She was almost… used to it.

Thinking about the question mark, she waited a few seconds before replying: [This afternoon]

As soon as she sent the message, a senior from her university drama club called.

“My dear Shen Shu, I desperately need a beautiful woman in a qipao. Interested in a cameo?”

  • Captivating Beauty 19

    Chapter 19

Xu Jinnan’s explanation was interrupted by her vibrating phone.

After the call, she apologized. “Can we postpone dinner? Something came up.”

    Shen Shu didn’t mind.

    “Go ahead.”

But the awkwardness lingered. Xu Jinnan touched her nose, turning to Shen Shu. “We’ll talk about this later,” she murmured, referring to the WeChat incident.

The multiple personalities excuse was convenient; after all, it wasn’t her who’d added Shen Shu. But with Zhou Pei still present, it wasn’t the right time to discuss it.

She regretted not changing her number sooner.

“Just drop me off first,” Shen Shu said.

“No need,” Xu Jinnan replied. “Zhou Pei can take you home. I’ll take a taxi. It’s not far.”

Shen Shu didn’t argue. As Xu Jinnan got out of the car, she saw her hail a taxi in the rearview mirror.

She hadn’t had much of an appetite anyway.

A few minutes later, she received a WeChat message from Xu Jinnan.

Xu Jinnan: [Going back to Xingcheng?] Xingcheng was the name of her apartment complex.

    Shen Shu: [Yes]

When they arrived, Zhou Pei offered to carry Shen Shu’s luggage upstairs, but she declined.

The suitcase was heavy, so she messaged Xu Jinnan about it once she was in the elevator.

Xu Jinnan replied instantly: [Should I come get it tonight?]

Shen Shu was typing “Tomorrow is fine too” when she received six digits from Xu Jinnan – her building’s access code and apartment number.

Shen Shu stared at the numbers, a strange feeling… a flicker of warmth, perhaps… spreading through her.

Did this mean Xu Jinnan had earned a bit of her trust?

Then she remembered to change Xu Jinnan’s contact name. Her profile picture was a simple crescent moon against a white background, matching her tattoo. Her WeChat ID was the same symbol, and her Moments were empty.

Just like her personality – aloof and distant.

The car stopped outside the Blue View Restaurant.

It was a newly opened high-end restaurant in North City. The person Xu Jinnan was meeting was already there.

A female Omega in a pinkish-blue suit, beige heels, and short, silver-gray hair. Each color was difficult to pull off, but she wore them with a unique style.

Her name was Tong Jia, the founder of Sacred Heart Pictures.

Unfortunately, after producing two hit dramas in its first two years, Sacred Heart had struggled. There had been offers for acquisition and investment, but they all came with strings attached, demanding they produce commercially viable dramas, following trends or casting popular actors.

Tong Jia had refused them all, including Xu Jinnan’s offer.

As a result, Sacred Heart was both famous and infamous, often ridiculed by industry giants.

“Miss Xu, you told me you would only provide funding and wouldn’t interfere with Sacred Heart’s decisions. Did I hear that correctly?”

Xu Jinnan swirled her wine. “That’s correct. An initial investment of ten million, with one condition.”

Tong Jia nodded knowingly. There was no such thing as a free lunch. After hearing Xu Jinnan’s condition, her eyes widened. “That’s it? Just give someone a role?” Ten million could buy any role, even in today’s market.

Besides, if Xu Jinnan wanted to promote someone, plenty of big companies would be happy to help. Why seek out Sacred Heart?

“I’m investing because I believe in Sacred Heart’s potential to resist mainstream trends. I’m a good judge of character,” Xu Jinnan replied.

She had a photographic memory – in the novel, Shen Shu and Tong Jia became friends, and Shen Shu even helped her secure investments. Sacred Heart later rose to prominence with a Republican-era drama.

Tong Jia studied her for a moment. “Miss Xu,” she said with a smile, “just so you know, I have a girlfriend.”

Xu Jinnan was speechless. Being a reformed scumbag was hard; even a compliment could be misconstrued as flirting.

    Everyone had a partner.

“I have a wife,” she replied.

Tong Jia, unimpressed, didn’t treat Xu Jinnan with the deference usually shown to investors. A hint of disdain colored her smile. “So, you’re spending this ten million for your wife?”

    “You’re right.”

    “?”

Xu Jinnan arrived at Shen Shu’s apartment building a little after eight in the evening.

Chen Bo had called twice, but she’d hung up both times.

[Nan-jie, I have something really exciting, you’ll love it.]

    [Don’t say I didn’t give you a heads-up.]

Xu Jinnan glanced at the messages and dismissed them.

She entered the access code and took the elevator upstairs, calculating her finances. The original Xu Jinnan, despite her extravagant lifestyle, wasn’t broke. With Lu Yun’s regular allowances, she had over fifteen million in various accounts. Xu Jinnan wasn’t interested in her money; she would need to find other ways to fund her investments.

She rang the doorbell, and after a moment, the door opened.

Shen Shu, dressed in comfortable home clothes, greeted her. The cool air from the apartment was a welcome relief from the summer heat.

    “Water or tea?” she asked.

Xu Jinnan looked down at the pink bunny slippers she’d been given. “…Water, please.” She wiggled her toes. I’m supposed to be a fierce Alpha, she thought, amused.

“Cai Ying bought them. They’re the only new ones,” Shen Shu explained.

“They’re nice. Very cute,” Xu Jinnan said.

As Shen Shu turned to pour her a glass of water, Xu Jinnan sat on the sofa and opened her suitcase.

A burgundy haute couture dress, perfect for her pale skin.

Despite her usually casual demeanor, her posture was impeccable, a testament to her upbringing. Her every movement exuded an effortless elegance.

This was different from the original Xu Jinnan.

As she placed the glass of water on the table, Shen Shu noticed a faint smell of alcohol on Xu Jinnan.

“What’s this?” she asked, sitting down as Xu Jinnan pulled out a miniature safe from her suitcase.

“Let’s see what’s inside,” Xu Jinnan replied. “But I don’t know the combination.”

    “…Whose is it?”

    “Mine.”

    “…”

Xu Jinnan corrected herself. “The other me’s. I have… a condition, remember? Like… what happened this afternoon. I don’t remember any of it.” Her response was quick and natural.

But for some reason, she felt like a cheating girlfriend making excuses.

“It was just a contact name. It doesn’t mean anything.”

    Xu Jinnan: “…”

Hadn’t she seen the number on the profile, not just the name?

Shen Shu watched her, suspicion flickering in her eyes. “Is there something else?”

“Like what?” Xu Jinnan asked, adjusting her mental state. It was probably for the best that Shen Shu hadn’t seen the rest.

Xu Jinnan focused on the safe. It wasn’t the original Xu Jinnan’s usual combination. After ruling out her birthday, Shen Shu suggested trying Lu Yun’s.

    Click

    The safe opened.

Xu Jinnan pulled out a small box.

The living room fell silent. The box also had a lock.

Xu Jinnan sighed. She was genuinely curious now. What could possibly be inside this thing to warrant such elaborate security measures?

As she was about to try different combinations, Shen Shu’s face paled as she looked at her phone.

    “What’s wrong?” Xu Jinnan asked.

“Was that man’s name Chen Bo?” Shen Shu asked. “Chen Xiaxia is with him.”

She didn’t need to say more. They both knew what kind of person Chen Bo was.

Xu Jinnan took the phone. A video played, showing a table littered with wine bottles, the room noisy and chaotic. Chen Xiaxia, wearing a skimpy bikini, lay unconscious on a black sofa, bathed in flashing colored lights.

So that’s what those text messages meant.

“Don’t go. I’ll bring her back,” Xu Jinnan said, seeing Shen Shu get up. “If you go, how can I teach him a lesson?”

    Shen Shu paused.

She wasn’t foolish. She knew those people wouldn’t dare touch Xu Jinnan. She nodded. “Be careful.”

Before leaving, Xu Jinnan tried calling Chen Bo, but he didn’t answer. He sent a text message instead.

    [Emperor Hotel 888]

What Xu Jinnan didn’t know was that as soon as she left, Shen Shu received another message, one that forced her hand.

The Emperor Hotel was members-only. Xu Jinnan, a valued regular, was granted entry without question.

She walked past the extravagant decor and blaring music, ignoring the scantily clad hostesses and hosts, some of whom seemed to recognize her and tried to greet her.

    She reached room 888.

No one approached her here, not even the staff, who seemed to have been instructed to stay away.

Compared to the earlier noise, this area was eerily quiet.

Xu Jinnan pushed open the door and saw Chen Xiaxia on the sofa, and another familiar figure lying beside her, also unconscious – Cai Ying.

A chilling realization washed over her.

As she stepped inside, distracted, a strong hand grabbed her from behind, pulling her into the room. She felt a sharp pain in her neck, her strength draining away.

A thud echoed as she was slammed against the door.

    “Yin Xue!”

“It’s me, Nannan… Did you miss me?” Yin Xue whispered in her ear. “I missed you.”

    “You’re fucking crazy—!”

Xu Jinnan groaned as another injection pierced her skin. A familiar heat surged through her.

    “What did you…?”

“Something good, something to make you… horny. The same kind you used on your little wife, but since you like things a little… intense, I used a needle.” Yin Xue smiled seductively. “Do you love me now? Do you regret leaving me?”

Xu Jinnan’s face darkened. That drug only worked on Omegas. Yin Xue had known all along! No wonder she’d been so brazen in front of the original Xu Jinnan; she had leverage.

“Your little wife doesn’t know you’re an Omega, does she?” Yin Xue murmured.

The injection was making Xu Jinnan tremble. A fire raged within her, her body aching, tingling, and itching, like insects crawling beneath her skin.

Professor Qin had said this was the initial symptom of an oncoming rut. Her first rut as an Alpha was imminent.

Xu Jinnan fought to maintain control, terrified of succumbing to the overwhelming urge.

And there were two Omegas in this room!

“You were playing the doting wife, weren’t you? I’ll let her see your true, depraved self… Stop struggling. You’re just a dysfunctional, frigid Omega. I gave you a large dose of aphrodisiac with the first injection. You won’t escape me tonight.”

    “You drugged Shen Shu too…?”

Xu Jinnan clenched her fists, her voice weakening.

    She was losing control.

Just as her Alpha pheromones were about to be released, Shen Shu’s voice echoed from outside.

    Chapter 18

Xu Jinnan hung up the phone, her earlobes flushed pink.

She stared at the call log, tilting her head and raising an eyebrow, picturing Shen Shu in a business suit, her head held high, perhaps leaning against her desk…

    Calling her “darling.”

A shiver ran down Xu Jinnan’s spine.

    That was… surprisingly arousing.

She shook her head, telling Zhou Pei to hurry to Shen Corporation. Shen Shu wouldn’t call unless the situation was worse than Zhou Pei had described.

    Her earlier fanciful thoughts vanished.

As the car slowed down on the road outside the villa, Xu Jinnan noticed a woman in a short black dress standing by the side of the road, waving at them.

    Xu Jinnan didn’t recognize her.

Pretending not to notice, she asked, “What’s wrong?”

“It’s Second Miss,” Zhou Pei replied.

From the first half of the novel, Xu Jinnan recalled the original Xu Jinnan’s dislike for her older half-sister, Xu Li, and Xu Tao’s favoritism towards her.

Perfect; she wouldn’t be out of character.

She had no time for Xu Li now.

“Don’t stop,” Xu Jinnan said curtly.

Zhou Pei hesitated for a moment, then accelerated, driving past Xu Li.

Less than a hundred meters later, her phone rang. The contact was labeled “Second Bitch.” After the original Xu Jinnan’s creative labeling system, this seemed rather tame.

    She swiped to answer.

“It’s just your wedding. As your older sister, I wanted to congratulate you. Is that so wrong?” As she’d suspected, it was Xu Li.

“What do you want?” Xu Jinnan asked.

Xu Li chuckled. “Nothing much. You handled the land deal well. Dad even praised you. I heard you and that Shen woman are getting along well. I’m just curious… have you finally decided to settle down?” Her tone was condescending.

Xu Jinnan drawled, “Something like that. Trying to reform myself so I can get a bigger share of the inheritance.”

As expected, Xu Li fell silent.

When she spoke again, the pretense was gone. “Really? We’ll see about that.”

    “Sure.”

    Xu Li hung up.

So, out of the five members of the Xu family, including the original Xu Jinnan, four were… unusual.

Xu Jinnan put her phone away, her movements slowing as a thought occurred to her – could Xu Li be the one behind Yin Xue’s stunt?

Only the top executives knew about the land deal. Xu Tao’s improved opinion of her wouldn’t have mattered to anyone else.

    But Xu Li cared.

She craved their father’s approval. Like children fighting over a toy, if one sensed a threat, they would react.

Xu Tao’s opinion of her had just improved. If a scandal involving her at the hospital, a Xu family investment, tarnished their reputation, would he still think highly of her?

It was just speculation, and Xu Jinnan didn’t have the energy to dwell on it now.

For some reason, she couldn’t focus. She glanced at the time.

    “Faster,” she told Zhou Pei.

Shen Shu was gathering her belongings when Shen Guotao stormed in, his face dark.

“Are you trying to destroy this family?!”

Shen Shu didn’t look up. “I’m not trying to destroy anything. You kicked me out.”

“Sis, we’ve been so good to you. All you had to do was take a three-month suspension to save me, and you refused? What kind of sister are you?” Shen Jun sat at his desk, his feet propped up, a smirk on his face. “You even called Xu Jinnan for help? Seriously?”

Shen Shu said calmly, “Didn’t you arrange this marriage? What’s wrong with calling my wife?”

“What’s wrong?! This is a family matter! If you dare speak about this outside, I’ll disown you!” Shen Guotao yelled.

Shen Shu put down her things, her expression unchanged, her long lashes concealing the pain in her eyes.

“Does it even matter if you disown me?”

She could have taken the blame.

If they’d shown even a flicker of remorse, she might have gritted her teeth and endured the humiliation.

    “You!” Shen Guotao sputtered.

Shen Jun tapped his foot against the desk. “Forget it, Dad. Does she really think that Xu heiress will care? Everyone knows what Xu Jinnan is like…”

“Besides, Xu Jinnan doesn’t love her. Does she really think she’s someone important, that Xu Jinnan will come running just because she calls? I don’t believe it.”

    Shen Guotao’s anger didn’t subside.

Almost immediately after they’d announced Shen Shu’s suspension, Wei Wuqing had messaged him about Xu Jinnan taking Shen Shu away that afternoon. He was genuinely worried.

Suddenly, a knock came at the door.

“Mr. Shen, Miss Xu from the Xu Corporation is here.”

Shen Shu’s grip on her finger loosened slightly.

She hadn’t been sure Xu Jinnan would come.

    Shen Guotao’s face fell.

He hurried out to greet her, but before he could reach the door, Zhou Pei pushed it open.

Though technically a guest, Xu Jinnan strode in like she owned the place. No one dared to stop her, or even speak.

She walked over to Shen Shu, her heels clicking against the floor. “Who upset you?” she murmured, her voice low. “Tell me.”

It was practically an invitation to let her handle it.

The people who’d hurt her were her family, and the person defending her was Xu Jinnan. Shen Shu suddenly felt a strange sense of absurdity. She looked at Xu Jinnan.

“They accused me of embezzlement. I’ve been suspended.”

Her voice was calm, merely stating the facts.

Even if she was pretending, Shen Shu wouldn’t show weakness in front of others.

Xu Jinnan looked at the storage box on Shen Shu’s desk. “Oh? How much?” she asked casually.

    “Three million.”

    Xu Jinnan scoffed. “Three million?”

She looked at Shen Guotao, who coughed nervously. Xu Jinnan didn’t give him a chance to speak. “Surely no one is foolish enough to believe that someone I care about would even bother with three million.”

The Shen family had only just begun to reap the benefits of their connection to the Xu family. How dare Shen Guotao offend her?

She glared at Shen Jun. “Of course, no one believes it. It’s all a misunderstanding. I was just talking to Shu Shu about it! She must have called you in her panic.”

“And I’m the only one who knows about this misunderstanding?” Xu Jinnan asked.

“No, everyone knows. Of course, they do,” Shen Guotao stammered.

Xu Jinnan looked at Shen Shu. Shen Guotao quickly added, “She just has a bit of a temper. She shouldn’t have left like that. A CEO can’t just walk out.”

Shen Shu didn’t reply, closing the storage box.

Xu Jinnan understood. She’d been worried Shen Shu would soften and stay.

    “Mr. Shen?”

The slight upward inflection in her voice was a warning.

Shen Guotao’s face turned an even darker shade of red. Shen Jun, sitting across from them, quickly lowered his feet and followed his father out of the room.

    The office fell silent.

Xu Jinnan, who hadn’t had anything to drink all afternoon, went to get herself a cup of tea, giving Shen Shu some space.

Shen Shu had taken off her blazer, the top button of her white shirt undone. She stood by the window, head bowed, a cigarette between her fingers, the smoke curling like a ghost against the backdrop of the city skyline.

This was the Shen Shu Xu Jinnan found when she returned.

An unusual display of vulnerability and rebellion. For a moment, Xu Jinnan almost regretted her harsh treatment of the Shen family.

“I didn’t know you smoked,” she said, trying to lighten the mood.

Shen Shu extinguished her cigarette. After a moment, she said, “Thank you.” The shareholders’ meeting had sealed her fate; the news would spread sooner or later.

If Xu Jinnan hadn’t come, regardless of whether the Shen family took her back, her reputation in this city would be ruined.

Xu Jinnan smiled faintly. “Buy me dinner then. I’m hungry.” She didn’t say anything more.

Shen Shu looked at her, surprised, then nodded. “Alright.”

On their way to the restaurant, Shen Shu remained silent. Her capacity for endurance was remarkable.

Xu Jinnan wanted to start a conversation but felt it would be too forced. Shen Shu was calmly replying to messages on her phone, as if nothing had happened, the earlier gloom and despair now buried deep within her.

Xu Jinnan could tell she was using WeChat.

    She turned away.

After a moment, she said, “Give me your WeChat.”

    “…What?”

“Texting is inconvenient.” Shen Shu paused. “It’s fine if you don’t want to.”

    “It’s fine.”

Xu Jinnan scanned Shen Shu’s QR code. Shen Shu’s profile appeared on her screen.

    What the—?!

    When had she added her?!

Before she could see the numbers and letters on Shen Shu’s profile, Xu Jinnan quickly closed the app. “I already had you on my contact list.”

Shen Shu said calmly, “I saw that.”

    “…” Xu Jinnan said, “Here’s the thing…”

    Chapter 17

    Something she loved?

Shen Shu shielded her face from the sun. Some things, once abandoned, were harder to reclaim than reaching for the sky. The dreams she once cherished were now beyond her grasp.

She gazed out the window at the bright sunlight, tears tracing paths down her cheeks. Could she endure this any longer?

    She was so tired.

She didn’t know who had given birth to her, only to become a burden in this world. It seemed her existence was solely for their torment.

She wiped away the remaining tears with her finger and answered her buzzing phone.

    An unknown number.

‘Call me if you need anything. Don’t let them bully you. – Xu Jinnan’

    She paused.

    Another message arrived.

‘I’m using you to fight for the inheritance. You can use me too. Fair trade.’

Xu Jinnan’s implication was clear: she had agreed to help the Shen family, but ultimately, it was for Shen Shu’s sake. If Shen Shu changed her mind, the terms of their agreement could be renegotiated.

Shen Shu turned off her phone, staring out the window, lost in thought.

The Xu family villa was located in the exclusive South District. Money alone couldn’t buy you a place there. Xu Tao wasn’t an ordinary man to have built the Xu Corporation into such a powerhouse.

When Xu Jinnan arrived, the servants seemed surprised to see her.

To her surprise, they informed her that Lu Yun wasn’t home.

Walking across the plush carpet of the grand entrance hall, she saw a middle-aged man reading a newspaper on the sofa – Xu Tao.

He was slightly overweight, but his tall frame carried it well.

“You decided to come home?” he said, putting down the newspaper and glaring at her. He was clearly angry.

In the book, Xu Tao had treated the original Xu Jinnan well, and he and Lu Yun were known for their loving marriage. Xu Jinnan couldn’t understand why the original Xu Jinnan would investigate him.

Xu Jinnan put on a businesslike smile. “Dad, considering I’ve made a contribution to the company, please don’t be angry.”

Xu Tao grunted, scolding her half-heartedly for her recklessness.

But when he mentioned her marriage, his face darkened, his words laced with disdain for the Shen family.

“I don’t care how you behave outside, but if you embarrass the Xu family again, I won’t forgive you.”

Xu Jinnan hadn’t sensed anything amiss until this moment. As she took a sip of tea, she happened to meet Xu Tao’s gaze.

She couldn’t pinpoint what was wrong, but it felt… uncomfortable.

As Xu Tao got up to answer a phone call, Xu Jinnan scanned the room – the spacious, luxurious hall, the grand staircase – her gaze finally settling on a room on the second floor, at the southern end of the house.

Glancing at Xu Tao’s back, she went upstairs.

The original Xu Jinnan’s room was spotless, likely cleaned daily. A large painting of a nude back, presumably hers, hung on the wall opposite the bed.

Xu Jinnan remembered a hidden room, disguised as a walk-in closet, that no one knew about.

The closet was filled with an array of sexy dresses. A separate wardrobe held various… accessories, including belts, chains, and whips…

She rubbed her fingertips, as if she could still feel the cold metal of the handcuffs from that night.

    Her heart pounded.

It was the same reaction she’d had when she saw the contents of the red bag.

She pushed the disturbing thoughts aside and focused on the hidden room. Opening the back of the closet, she found a small, two-square-meter room. She switched on the light. A single framed photo sat on a small black table.

It was a family portrait of three people.

A buzzing sound filled the small space.

Startled, Xu Jinnan answered her phone. Lu Yun’s voice sounded less energetic than usual.

“Nannan, the housekeeper told me you’re home? Why didn’t you tell me you were coming?”

“I just decided on the spur of the moment.” Xu Jinnan stared at the photo, her voice distracted. “Why aren’t you home?”

“I’m on vacation with some friends. You never come home, so I have to find other company.”

    “Oh, okay.”

“Is your father home?” Lu Yun asked.

    “Yes, why?”

Lu Yun paused. “No reason. Your father’s been in a bad mood lately. Don’t sleep at home tonight. I don’t want you two fighting while I’m away.”

Xu Jinnan said she was just stopping by.

As Lu Yun continued talking, Xu Jinnan heard another voice in the background.

“Her oxygen saturation is a little low…”

    Then the line went dead.

This was the first time Lu Yun had hung up on her. Xu Jinnan called back, but Lu Yun hung up again, sending a WeChat message instead.

[A friend I’m traveling with is in the hospital. Something came up. Take care, Nannan. I’ll be back in a few days.]

Xu Jinnan looked back at the photo – Lu Yun, the original Xu Jinnan, and a man who was presumably Xu Tao. She said presumably because his face had been scratched out…

The original Xu Jinnan investigating Xu Tao was puzzling enough, and now Lu Yun’s behavior seemed strange too.

So far, no one in this family, including the original Xu Jinnan, seemed normal.

    What secrets were they hiding?

As Xu Jinnan frowned, as if to confirm her suspicions, a portable safe beside the photo caught her attention.

A wave of unease washed over her.

She knew this feeling wasn’t hers; it belonged to the original Xu Jinnan.

Just as her body retained some of the original Xu Jinnan’s preferences, it also seemed to hold onto some of her negative emotions.

Downstairs, Xu Tao was gone. Xu Jinnan left the villa, feeling disturbed.

Zhou Pei, seeing her carrying a small box, hurried out of the car to take it.

“Miss, something happened with Miss Shen.”

    Xu Jinnan stopped. “What happened?”

“Our contact at Shen Corporation said that to cover up Shen Jun’s embezzlement, Shen Guotao called a shareholders’ meeting and blamed everything on Miss Shen.” Zhou Pei watched Xu Jinnan’s reaction. “Miss Shen had no idea. She went to the company to discuss a solution with Mr. Yang, but…”

    “Those bastards!”

Xu Jinnan rarely cursed. Her usual composure shattered, replaced by a chilling rage.

Zhou Pei felt a shiver run down her spine.

Xu Jinnan called Shen Shu twice, but she didn’t answer. She told Zhou Pei to drive to the Shen Corporation building.

As they were leaving the villa, Xu Jinnan’s phone rang.

    It was Shen Shu.

    “Hello?” Xu Jinnan answered.

“Darling.” Shen Shu’s cool voice was soft, almost a whisper. “I’m at the company. Could you come pick me up?”

Xu Jinnan’s fingers tightened around the phone.

She knew Shen Shu was putting on an act for someone else, but the endearment sent a shiver down her spine, a strange tingling sensation spreading through her.

  • Captivating Beauty 16

    Chapter 16

    “…”

Xu Jinnan had anticipated the risks of living under the same roof with someone as observant as Shen Shu, but being caught so quickly was unexpected.

She maintained her composure, her voice muffled by the tissue pressed against her nose. “Really? I always get nosebleeds after drinking it.”

Shen Shu watched her for a moment, then turned and left the room. Xu Jinnan heard the door open and close.

She smiled faintly. Good thing she’d thought fast.

Shen Shu wouldn’t normally bother explaining things to her. If Xu Jinnan hadn’t already learned a bit about her, she might have fallen for the trap.

Footsteps approached again. Shen Shu returned with an ice pack, wrapped it in a clean towel, and placed it on the counter.

    “Use this.”

    “Oh… thanks.”

    Xu Jinnan was surprised.

She watched Shen Shu’s retreating figure, then picked up the ice pack and pressed it against her nose, catching her reflection in the mirror – her face smeared with blood.

    “…”

    This was rather embarrassing.

Xu Jinnan barely slept that night. In the morning, she heard a noise and opened her eyes, her gaze drawn to a pair of elegant ankles, long, straight trousers, a slender waist beneath a crisp white shirt, and dark hair tied neatly back.

Perhaps sensing her gaze, Shen Shu turned around, holding a document.

    Xu Jinnan’s eyes widened slightly.

The perfectly ironed shirt, buttoned all the way up, strained slightly against Shen Shu’s figure as she moved. A black blazer hung over her arm, the contrast accentuating her striking features.

This was the full impact of the aloof, alluring protagonist.

“I’m going to work. Lock the door when you get up.”

“Mm.” Xu Jinnan’s voice was raspy from disuse, but her drowsiness vanished under the onslaught of beauty.

She was, after all, susceptible to a pretty face.

After Shen Shu left, Xu Jinnan called Professor Qin about the invigorating soup.

“You haven’t stabilized yet. How could you consume something so potent?”

I didn’t know it was that potent, Xu Jinnan thought.

“Miss Xu, you haven’t experienced your first rut yet. Consuming such things can disrupt your Alpha hormone levels.” Professor Qin warned, “Especially for secondary differentiators, the first rut is usually more intense. Hormonal imbalances at this stage can lead to complications. Even if you try to alleviate it through… intimacy, or marking, it could be risky for both you and your partner.”

    Xu Jinnan: “…And if there’s no… alleviation?”

She had no one to be intimate with, no one to mark.

Professor Qin paused, thinking, Does the promiscuous Xu Jinnan ever lack for partners? Then he remembered how much she’d changed since getting married. “You mean, if Miss Shen isn’t around? It could be dangerous, but…” He explained that he was developing a specialized suppressant.

    Xu Jinnan hung up.

She hoped she’d still be alive when he finished developing it.

Downstairs, Wei Wuqing and Chen Xiaxia’s mother were lecturing Chen Xiaxia about last night’s incident.

Chen Xiaxia hung her head. “I’m sorry. I won’t do it again.”

“You should be apologizing to more than just me,” Xu Jinnan said, brushing past them.

It was clear that Chen Xiaxia’s stunt last night wasn’t a first. Xu Jinnan remembered an incident where Wei Wuqing, unhappy with Shen Shu’s decisions at the company, had woken her up in the middle of the night to berate her.

    Her cold demeanor was deliberate.

Shen Shu always yielded to them. Xu Jinnan wouldn’t let them think she was easy to manipulate. They shouldn’t think either of them could be bullied.

As Xu Jinnan headed out, Chen Xiaxia followed her to the door, but didn’t dare stop her, perhaps sensing her change of heart. She wrung her hands, tears streaming down her face.

“Jinnan-jie, I really didn’t mean to do it last night. I’ll call my cousin and apologize. Can you please help me? I’m desperate.”

Xu Jinnan glanced at her watch.

Chen Xiaxia, afraid she would refuse, quickly explained her situation. She was supposed to play a supporting role in a drama, but she’d just learned she’d been replaced. That’s why she’d barged into their room last night.

Xu Jinnan’s phone rang. She glanced at the number. “I’ll think about it.” She had important things to do today. Once in the car, she took the documents Zhou Pei handed her.

“These are film and television companies that have been struggling recently. Some are looking for buyers, others for investors. I’ve listed them in order of estimated market value.”

Xu Jinnan flipped through the documents and pulled one out from the bottom of the pile. “Let’s go to this one.”

Zhou Pei cautioned, “This is the least promising one, and the owner has a bad reputation in the industry.”

“Could it be worse than mine?”

    “…” Fair point.

    Zhou Pei didn’t argue.

The visit ended at three in the afternoon. Xu Jinnan wanted to ask Shen Shu when she would be home, but she realized she didn’t have her number.

She definitely wasn’t on her WeChat contact list either.

She told Zhou Pei to drive to the Shen residence. Shen Shu’s white BMW was already parked in the garage. A gardener was trimming the hedges, so Xu Jinnan went inside.

In the living room, Shen Shu was standing before Wei Wuqing. “Mr. Yang discovered Shen Jun embezzled company funds.”

“Don’t try to fool me with that Mr. Yang excuse. I know you’re close to him at the company.” Wei Wuqing continued, “Don’t you care about your brother at all? You’ve embarrassed him in front of all the shareholders. Are you happy now?”

“Shen Shu, you’re in the wrong here,” Chen Xiaxia’s mother chimed in.

“Anyone else could take the blame, but not Shen Jun. He’s going to inherit the company. How can he continue working there now?”

“The news has already spread throughout the company.” Shen Shu took a deep breath. “Even my father can’t suppress it. What can I do?”

“There’s a solution. If you still consider yourself part of the Shen family, you’ll take the blame. You’ll be suspended for a few months, and then it’ll all blow over.”

Shen Shu looked at them, her heart sinking despite her preparations.

Her fingers, clutching her bag, turned white, her voice trembling slightly. “What if I can’t do that?”

Wei Wuqing’s face hardened. “If you can’t do that, you don’t deserve to be part of this family! Have you forgotten everything we’ve done for you just because you have Xu Jinnan as your backer? Let’s be honest, you only married into the Xu family because of us.”

Chen Xiaxia’s mother added, “And Xiaxia went to you last night, begging for your help. How did you treat her? Not only did you send her away, but you also had that Xu heiress come out and yell at me. Shen Shu, you should be helping your family.”

After a long silence, Shen Shu let out a bitter laugh.

“I’ve never been good enough for you.”

Wei Wuqing was about to retort when she saw a tall figure emerge from the hallway. Her face contorted into a mixture of anger and a forced smile.

    “Nannan, you’re back so early…”

Xu Jinnan walked over without a word, took Shen Shu’s bag, and grasped her wrist.

Shen Shu tried to pull away, but Xu Jinnan’s grip tightened.

Xu Jinnan’s voice was cold. “Mrs. Wei, you’re wrong about one thing. Without Shu Shu, the Shen family is nothing to me.”

Wei Wuqing’s face paled at the formal address. She was about to speak, but Xu Jinnan glanced at Chen Xiaxia’s nervous mother and said slowly, “I was going to help Chen Xiaxia, for Shu Shu’s sake. But now it seems I can’t.”

    “Miss Xu, about that…”

Xu Jinnan turned and walked away, pulling Shen Shu along with her.

As they walked to the car, Xu Jinnan looked down at Shen Shu. All the color had drained from her face, her eyes slightly reddened.

Perhaps because Xu Jinnan was staring, Shen Shu turned her head away, pulling her hand free.

“You can go. I’m going back to the company.”

Xu Jinnan’s voice hardened. “What for? You don’t need to deal with this mess.”

“You don’t have to do this either, Xu Jinnan…” Shen Shu stopped mid-sentence.

Zhou Pei was still in the car; they couldn’t discuss their arrangement openly. But Xu Jinnan understood the unspoken words: they had an agreement; she shouldn’t interfere in Shen Shu’s family matters.

Shen Shu’s face was pale and expressionless, like a cold porcelain doll.

“Being kind to you isn’t unnecessary,” Xu Jinnan said softly, her harsh tone replaced by gentle concern.

Shen Shu’s eyelashes fluttered. She heard Xu Jinnan’s warm, clear voice. “Shu Shu, have you ever thought about pursuing something you truly love?”

    Chapter 15

Shen Shu had already walked over to the French windows, the breeze stirring her dark hair. She nodded slightly, her lips parting. “Is that so?”

Xu Jinnan realized that while Shen Shu appeared to believe her, she had been testing her.

After all, Xu Jinnan had just promised not to involve anyone close to Shen Shu. Chen Xiaxia was her cousin. Any sign of impropriety would have shattered the fragile trust between them.

This was the true protagonist: insecure, always seeking out corners and window seats, trusting no one but herself, a perpetually wary fox maintaining a safe distance.

Xu Jinnan’s gaze shifted from Shen Shu, taking in her surroundings.

The room was spacious, with a pleasant view through the French windows. The decor was the same champagne color as the rest of the villa, the bed covered with a grayish-blue silk blanket.

A sudden thought struck Xu Jinnan. Where am I supposed to sleep?

    Later that evening…

Xu Jinnan looked at the thin blanket on the floor. Well, at least it’s something.

Zhou Pei had brought her toiletries. As Xu Jinnan entered the bathroom, a familiar sweet scent filled the air.

    Milk-scented shower gel.

Shen Shu, with her cold and aloof exterior, preferred the scents of vanilla and milk.

The contrast, a blend of allure and innocence, was strangely enticing.

Stepping out of the bathroom, Xu Jinnan exhaled, a wave of heat washing over her despite the air conditioning.

She saw Shen Shu sitting at the vanity table with a blue document, occasionally glancing at her phone, seemingly discussing something with someone.

Xu Jinnan didn’t interrupt her. Just then, Lu Yun called.

Xu Jinnan stepped onto the balcony.

“Why didn’t you tell me you were back in the hospital? Professor Qin said you need to rest. Why are you at the Shen’s? You should be recovering at home! Come back immediately!”

Xu Jinnan, prepared for this, launched into her rehearsed explanation.

Lu Yun’s anger subsided slightly, then she said, “Is this Shen Shu jinxing you? You’ve been in and out of the hospital since you got married.”

Xu Jinnan glanced at Shen Shu inside. “It has nothing to do with her.”

“No, I’m going to consult a fortune teller. I didn’t like her face from the start. It’s fine to play around, but don’t let her ruin your life…”

“…” Xu Jinnan’s voice cooled. “I’ll be back in a few days.”

She asked about the bidding process, and Lu Yun’s tone immediately changed, filled with pride and relief. “Nannan, how did you know about that land in the urban development plan? Those shareholders were stunned when they heard you were the one who saved the deal!”

As Lu Yun spoke, Xu Jinnan felt a wave of heat and loosened her collar.

After hanging up, she noticed Shen Shu was gone. She walked into the room and heard the shower running.

She unbuckled her belt, letting her silk robe fall to her waist, revealing a knee-length gray slip dress underneath.

Xu Jinnan checked the air conditioning; it seemed fine.

    But she was getting hotter.

Shen Shu emerged from the bathroom to find Xu Jinnan sprawled on the floor under the air conditioner, her robe loose around her waist, her cheeks flushed, a white bandage stark against her pale arm, fanning herself with a tissue.

“What are you doing?” Shen Shu asked.

“…” Xu Jinnan wiped the sweat from her forehead. “I exercised a bit. I’m a little hot.”

She finally realized what was happening.

Especially now that Shen Shu was out of the bathroom, her heart was pounding erratically.

Shen Shu watched as Xu Jinnan retreated to the bathroom again, a damp patch spreading across the back of her gray slip dress. The air conditioning was set to 18 degrees Celsius. What kind of exercise made her this hot?

Half an hour later, Xu Jinnan emerged, feeling weak. She lay down on the thin blanket on the floor, turning her face away. “Your mother won’t suddenly come in, will she?”

Shen Shu looked down. Even though this wasn’t the same Xu Jinnan, seeing this formerly arrogant, cruel, and unstable person lying meekly on the floor felt surreal.

“She won’t if you’re here,” Shen Shu replied, implying that Wei Wuqing would come in if Xu Jinnan wasn’t there.

    “Good night,” Xu Jinnan murmured.

After soaking in cold water for half an hour, she hadn’t expected the soup to be so potent. Falling asleep quickly seemed like the safest option.

Just as she was drifting off, a soft knock came at the door.

    “Jinnan-jie, are you asleep?”

    Xu Jinnan: “…”

She didn’t answer. Chen Xiaxia tried again. “Cousin, can you call her for me? I need to talk to Jinnan-jie.”

Xu Jinnan sat up with a groan, glancing at Shen Shu, who was sitting up in bed, reading. Shen Shu lowered her gaze and called out, “She’s asleep.”

    “It’s important,” Chen Xiaxia insisted.

“Deal with it yourself,” Shen Shu said, this time to Xu Jinnan.

The knocking continued. Xu Jinnan frowned, a warning on her lips. As she reached for the door handle, Chen Xiaxia suddenly opened the door. “I really need…”

Xu Jinnan rushed to the bed and lifted the blanket.

The mattress dipped as she practically threw herself on top of Shen Shu, pinning her down. Just as Shen Shu’s hand reached for Xu Jinnan’s bare shoulder, Chen Xiaxia opened the door.

She saw Shen Shu in bed, the shape of another person clearly visible under the covers. It was obvious what they were doing.

The figure under the covers moved, and the silk blanket slipped down, revealing Xu Jinnan’s furious face.

“Were you not taught any manners?”

Chen Xiaxia’s face flushed crimson. “I…”

Xu Jinnan supported herself with one arm to avoid touching Shen Shu, but her gaze fell on Shen Shu’s slightly parted, rosy lips.

The skin beneath Shen Shu’s palm was burning hot. She pulled her hand away, a wave of discomfort washing over her as she inhaled Xu Jinnan’s pure, sunny scent. “Get out,” she said coldly.

As soon as Chen Xiaxia left, Xu Jinnan rolled off Shen Shu, wincing in pain. She checked her bandage; it wasn’t bleeding. “We can’t let her see us sleeping separately.”

Was she explaining herself? Shen Shu paused. “Okay.”

“You don’t lock your door?” Xu Jinnan asked.

When Shen Shu stayed at home, Wei Wuqing would often knock on her door late at night, asking about company matters. So, whenever she was here, Shen Shu would lock her door, regardless of whether Wei Wuqing intended to disturb her or not. It had become a habit.

She hadn’t expected Chen Xiaxia to come looking for Xu Jinnan, much less barge in.

Shen Shu looked away from Xu Jinnan’s sweaty forehead. “I forgot.”

    “…”

Understanding dawned on Xu Jinnan. She studied Shen Shu for a moment, then left the room. A few minutes later, she returned, locked the door, and settled back onto the floor.

“No one will bother us now. Go to sleep.”

Soon, the lights went out, and the room was bathed in moonlight.

Shen Shu’s breathing evened out. Xu Jinnan opened her eyes, unable to sleep.

She’d pulled her slip dress up to her thighs, but the heat wouldn’t subside.

She got up quietly and went to the bathroom, then suddenly felt a warm trickle from her nose.

As she tilted her head back, dabbing her nose with a tissue, she saw Shen Shu standing at the doorway in the mirror.

Xu Jinnan’s expression remained neutral. “Too much nourishment, I guess. Nosebleed.”

“From the scent gland nourishing soup?” Shen Shu asked.

    “Yes.”

Even if it was meant for Alphas, it was still a potent tonic. As an Omega, and a patient at that, it wasn’t surprising that she was reacting this way. Or so she thought.

“Is that so? But scent gland nourishing soup only works on Alphas. For Omegas, it’s no better than vitamin C.” Shen Shu looked at her intently. “Didn’t you know?”
