Side Story 10: Lin Wei CP (Part 5)

    “Politics?”

“Yes, didn’t I tell you before? My dream is to become a politician.”

The sunset had faded, leaving only the dark expanse of the sky. The snow had stopped completely after they left the exam hall. Now, the night sky was clear, revealing a brilliant display of stars.

Neither of them mentioned going home. They reclined their seats, turning them into a small bed, opened the sunroof, and lay side by side, counting stars.

After exchanging several “rings,” Wei Zhuoning, exhausted but content, snuggled closer to Lin Xiaozhi, enjoying her warmth and scent.

Lin Xiaozhi draped a soft blanket over them, enjoying the closeness, and put her arm around Wei Zhuoning, letting her use it as a pillow.

It had been a while since they had relaxed like this, their minds not on studying.

Wei Zhuoning’s dream had always been clear: to write stories, to create worlds with her words.

Although she knew Lin Xiaozhi was intelligent, always ranking in the top five of their grade, this was the first time she had heard about Lin Xiaozhi’s aspirations.

Sensing Wei Zhuoning’s sudden stillness, Lin Xiaozhi lowered the music and looked down at her:

“What’s wrong? Don’t you like the idea of me being a politician?”

“No,” Wei Zhuoning quickly shook her head, “I just think your dreams are so grand. If you enter politics, you’ll make the world a better place.”

Lin Xiaozhi chuckled: “You have that much faith in me?”

    “Of course!”

    “I’m not even sure myself.”

Wei Zhuoning sat up, held Lin Xiaozhi’s wrist, leaned over her, and, looking into her eyes, said earnestly:

“Even if no one else believes in you, I do. You’re Lin Xiaozhi, you can do anything.”

Her sincerity touched Lin Xiaozhi deeply.

Wei Zhuoning truly believed in her, believed she was capable of anything.

Lin Xiaozhi hugged her tightly, closing her eyes, savoring the moment.

    Yes, she could do it.

    —-

After registering their marriage and leaving the Civil Affairs Bureau, Wei Zhuoning stared at her ID on her phone, now marked “Married,” her spouse “Lin Xiaozhi.”

Whenever they were within a meter of each other, little hearts floated from their phones.

So this was what being married felt like?

Wei Zhuoning’s heart raced. It felt like a dream…

Lin Xiaozhi teased her: “What’s with that silly look? You’re going to break your phone.”

    “I’m just happy! I’m so happy…”

Lin Xiaozhi was about to tease her again, her wedding vows so simple and unromantic, when she saw tears rolling down Wei Zhuoning’s cheeks and quickly pulled her into a hug.

“What’s wrong? Why are you crying on our wedding day?”

“I’m, happy…” The same two words.

    Lin Xiaozhi chuckled.

    Silly rabbit.

But this silly rabbit was finally hers, no one could take her away.

They had registered their marriage, but there was no ceremony.

Firstly, Chi Lin was still gone, and Wei Zhuoning wanted to wait for their friends.

Secondly, she didn’t have the money. She wanted to buy the ring herself, a real ring, and plan a beautiful wedding with her own money.

Lin Xiaozhi had plenty of money, she could easily buy a ring and arrange a lavish ceremony, but she didn’t want to.

She wanted to build their future together, with Wei Zhuoning, with their own hands.

During the long winter break, before school started again, Wei Zhuoning finally had time to write, to pour all her energy into her stories.

She spent almost all her free time writing, except for her dates with Lin Xiaozhi.

Lin Xiaozhi and a few friends had designed a stock trading app, which was selling well. She hadn’t been idle either, earning money with Wei Zhuoning.

They planned to move out and live together after starting university; the money they earned during the break was for rent.

But Wei Zhuoning’s mother needed care, even if they moved out, she would still visit her every day.

“So…” Lin Xiaozhi, smiling as always, “I’ll take you home every day, then pick you up and bring you back to our place.”

“That’s too much trouble for you.”

“It’s not, the highway is fast, it’ll only take half an hour. Or we can have your mom move in with us, it’s not very safe in the lower district, and it would be closer to your university.”

Lin Xiaozhi always gave Wei Zhuoning options, never forcing her.

But Wei Zhuoning knew every choice came with sacrifices.

Seeing her downcast expression, Lin Xiaozhi poked her cheek playfully:

“What are you thinking about? Any secrets?”

Wei Zhuoning covered her face, her cheeks burning.

This beautiful, capable girl was her wife…

“I feel like I’m holding you back,” she said softly.

She knew she was insecure, especially around Lin Xiaozhi.

Lin Xiaozhi was too perfect, too accomplished, she had effortlessly gotten into a top law school.

Wei Zhuoning never doubted her abilities; she could achieve anything she set her mind to.

    Beauty, family background, intelligence…

Lin Xiaozhi had everything, while Wei Zhuoning felt like she had nothing.

Lin Xiaozhi was like a goddess, who could be worthy of her?

Wei Zhuoning poured out her heart to Lin Xiaozhi.

    “Pfft.”

Lin Xiaozhi couldn’t help but laugh.

Wei Zhuoning’s face burned: “What are you laughing at? I’m serious!”

Lin Xiaozhi said: “You love me too much, that’s why you see me as perfect.”

    “But you are!”

“I’m not as perfect as you think, I’m not a goddess.” Lin Xiaozhi started unbuttoning her shirt.

“What, what are you doing?” Wei Zhuoning was surprised.

“I want you to see the real me, the imperfect me.”

Wei Zhuoning’s breath hitched as she felt Lin Xiaozhi’s warm hands on her skin.

“I cry, I laugh, I get hurt, I get sad, I even have bad habits like smoking. I’m not perfect, but because you love me, you see me as perfect… Zhuoning, it makes me so happy. But you have to understand, I’m lost in your gaze, consumed by your love, I crave everything about you, you are my goddess. I want to belong to you, completely.”

Lin Xiaozhi held Wei Zhuoning’s hand, guiding her, taking the lead.

    “Xiaozhi…”

“Do you feel it? My love for you, my desire for you, it’s real. I’m not a goddess, I’m yours, completely.”

    —–

Wei Zhuoning would never forget this moment, Lin Xiaozhi’s vulnerability, her unfiltered desire, her willingness to be led.

Even her aggressiveness, her desperate longing, was endearing.

Lin Xiaozhi was so beautiful, her honesty making Wei Zhuoning’s heart ache.

    She would cherish her forever.

When they moved out of the lower district, Wei Zhuoning’s mother, watching her daughter and Lin Xiaozhi bustling around, packing their belongings with the movers, couldn’t stop smiling.

She had dreamed of leaving that awful place, but it had seemed impossible.

    Now, it was real.

She had also imagined her daughter’s future partner, perhaps a kind and steady young man, or a hardworking girl, but someone like Lin Xiaozhi was beyond her expectations.

    “Mom.”

Wei Zhuoning’s mother, watching Lin Xiaozhi, was startled by her sudden appearance.

“Are you taking this basin? It’s cracked, we can buy a new one.”

Lin Xiaozhi smiled at her brightly.

“Thank you, Xiaozhi,” she said, “for taking me in.”

Lin Xiaozhi, surprised by her gratitude, held her hand: “We’re family now, there’s nothing to thank me for. I should be thanking you, for raising such a wonderful daughter. Zhuoning and you are my responsibility now, I’ll take good care of you.”

Wei Zhuoning’s mother blushed, her eyes tearing up.

    ——

University courses were demanding, surrounded by brilliant students, Lin Xiaozhi felt the pressure.

She hadn’t smoked in almost six months.

She had promised Wei Zhuoning she would quit if she got into L University.

Wei Zhuoning had kept her end of the bargain, and now Lin Xiaozhi should quit completely.

But when she was stressed, she still craved a cigarette.

Sitting in her study, her mind unusually cluttered, she opened her drawer and looked at the unopened pack of cigarettes and the lighter.

No, no… She closed the drawer.

    She couldn’t disappoint Zhuoning.

    But, just one…

No, even one cigarette, and Zhuoning, with her sensitive nose, would know.

Lin Xiaozhi’s throat itched. She went to take a shower to calm down.

After showering, she helped Wei Zhuoning’s mother with her sponge bath. Wei Zhuoning still hadn’t returned.

She only had two classes this afternoon, where was she?

She hadn’t replied to her messages either.

Lin Xiaozhi looked out the window and saw Wei Zhuoning in the garden, talking to a woman.

She watched them quietly. They talked for over half an hour, then the woman left, and Wei Zhuoning came upstairs.

“Why are you so late?” Lin Xiaozhi opened the door for her, taking her heavy backpack.

“Where were you?” she asked, smiling.

Wei Zhuoning avoided her gaze: “My tutor needed help with something…”

    “You didn’t see my messages?”

“Did you send me any? Sorry, I didn’t see them.”

Wei Zhuoning was a terrible liar.

“Come on, let’s eat, I cooked tonight.”

Wei Zhuoning nodded, her smile strained.

For the next month, there were days when Wei Zhuoning came home late.

On those days, Lin Xiaozhi would watch from the window as Wei Zhuoning talked to the woman with long, black hair in the garden below.

They usually talked for about fifteen minutes. Initially, it hadn’t seemed like anything unusual, but today, Wei Zhuoning had adjusted the woman’s collar.

Lin Xiaozhi’s eye twitched, and she lit a cigarette…

    “You’ve been smoking?”

Wei Zhuoning smelled the cigarettes as soon as she entered.

    “Yes,” Lin Xiaozhi admitted calmly.

“Why…” Wei Zhuoning looked at her with concern. “You haven’t smoked in months.”

    “I was stressed.”

“Why were you stressed?” Wei Zhuoning pressed.

She had the nerve to ask?!

Lin Xiaozhi had smoked four cigarettes in a row while waiting for Wei Zhuoning! That woman, daring to appear beneath their apartment!

And now Wei Zhuoning was asking why she was stressed?!

“I’m not blind,” Lin Xiaozhi said, deciding to confront her. “I saw you.”

Tears welled up in her eyes: “How could you do this to me?”

“Huh?” Wei Zhuoning, startled, pulled her into the bedroom, away from her mother.

“You saw us?” As soon as the door closed, Wei Zhuoning offered her some tissues.

Lin Xiaozhi refused them: “If you didn’t want me to see it, you shouldn’t have done it right below our apartment!”

Wei Zhuoning: “I, I couldn’t stop her, she insisted on coming.”

“Oh, she’s bold, isn’t she? Fine, I’ll be waiting for her with a knife tomorrow, I’ll chop her into pieces!”

Wei Zhuoning, seeing Lin Xiaozhi’s fury, her usually elegant face red and contorted, couldn’t help but laugh.

Lin Xiaozhi yelled: “Wei Zhuoning! Have you no conscience?! We just got married! You…”

Wei Zhuoning covered her mouth: “Calm down, Xiaozhi, she won’t come again, I promise.”

“She won’t come again? Why? Did she give up? Just tell me, how far did you two go?” Lin Xiaozhi’s voice trembled, tears threatening to spill. “Do you still love me? Do you still want to be with me? If you…”

Wei Zhuoning quickly interrupted her: “Xiaozhi, you’re misunderstanding. There’s nothing between us.”

“Huh?” Lin Xiaozhi’s tears froze on her eyelashes, her expression changing rapidly.

“She’s from Class 2, her name is Qu Han, remember her?”

“Class 2? Qu Han?” Lin Xiaozhi paused, a flicker of recognition in her eyes.

“You do remember.” Wei Zhuoning looked at her sadly. “She’s liked you for years, you knew, right?”

    Lin Xiaozhi: “…”

Qu Han had confessed to her in their first year, but Lin Xiaozhi, obsessed with Wei Zhuoning, had forgotten about it.

“She’s in my class now, she’s been bothering me lately, I ignored her, but then she changed her tactics.”

    “What did she do?!”

“She… tried to make things difficult for me.”

    “What did she do?!”

“She… blocked me in the hallway a few times.”

“Blocked you?! What did she do to you?!”

“Nothing, I didn’t let her do anything.”

Lin Xiaozhi was about to go find a knife.

Wei Zhuoning quickly calmed her down.

“Then what?! What was her point?!”

“She just… wanted to see me suffer, I guess. Because I married you.”

“No, that’s not it.” Lin Xiaozhi knew better. “She’s not that simple. Tell me the truth!”

Wei Zhuoning, intimidated by Lin Xiaozhi’s intensity, confessed: “She… wanted me to like her…”

“…” Lin Xiaozhi was furious. “Why didn’t you tell me?!”

Wei Zhuoning shrugged: “You were stressed with your studies, I didn’t want to bother you.”

“This is my problem! I should handle it! How dare she bully you!”

Wei Zhuoning remained silent. Lin Xiaozhi, after a moment of seething anger, calmed down, hugged her, and asked:

“Then what? How did she give up?”

“She kept waiting for me downstairs, I got annoyed, and we argued a few times. I almost hit her today, and she finally left.”

“Just like that? She won’t come back?”

“I think so. She said I never wavered, even after all her attempts to provoke me, and that I even defended you, so she realized I must really love you and decided to give up.”

    Lin Xiaozhi was still angry.

    That idiot! How dare she?!

Wei Zhuoning held her arm and smiled: “Wasn’t I cool? I chased away your rival!”

Lin Xiaozhi couldn’t help but smile and poked her forehead: “Don’t keep secrets from me! I thought you were seeing someone else!”

“So that’s why you were smoking…”

“Of course! It’s your fault! I haven’t smoked in months!”

    “Then, what should we do?”

“I don’t know, you figure it out, if I can’t quit, it’s your fault.”

“Okay, okay, it’s my fault, don’t be angry, Xiaozhi.”

Wei Zhuoning’s gentle coaxing made Lin Xiaozhi’s heart melt, and she wanted to continue acting spoiled.

    But she couldn’t.

After smoking again, her cravings intensified, her frustration growing.

It was all Qu Han’s fault.

Lin Xiaozhi went to L University and, in front of Qu Han, kissed Wei Zhuoning passionately, making everyone around them blush, then pulled away.

“Let me make this clear, I, Lin Xiaozhi, will only ever love Wei Zhuoning. Anyone who bullies her will answer to me.”

With that, she left with Wei Zhuoning.

Outside the building, Wei Zhuoning’s face was still flushed.

“Was that a declaration of ownership?”

“Yes, you’re mine, don’t even think about running away.”

This should have been a sweet, romantic moment, but Wei Zhuoning’s expression turned serious:

    “Did you smoke again?”

“…You can still smell it after I changed clothes?”

“It’s not about the clothes, I can always tell when you’ve been smoking, from your kiss.”

    “…”

“Didn’t you promise to quit?” Wei Zhuoning’s voice was filled with disappointment.

    “But it’s so hard…”

Wei Zhuoning knew it was hard, but she truly wanted Lin Xiaozhi to quit.

Two days later, after dinner, as Lin Xiaozhi was about to light a cigarette on the balcony, Wei Zhuoning hugged her from behind and kissed her deeply.

    Lin Xiaozhi: “?”

Wei Zhuoning’s sudden passion was overwhelming, their kiss deepening as they stumbled into the bedroom. Wei Zhuoning started undressing her.

    Lin Xiaozhi: “??”

They didn’t stop until late at night, Lin Xiaozhi so exhausted she could barely move, the forgotten cigarette lying somewhere on the balcony floor.

After showering, Wei Zhuoning came back for more.

“Baby, you’re trying to kill me…”

From then on, whenever Lin Xiaozhi felt the urge to smoke, Wei Zhuoning would appear, kissing her and pulling her towards the bed.

After a couple of weeks, Lin Xiaozhi not only hadn’t smoked, but she had also lost weight and was full of energy.

Wei Zhuoning was pleased: “It seems this special method is working.”

    Lin Xiaozhi shook her head.

    Wei Zhuoning: “?”

“It hasn’t worked yet, you have to keep supervising me, forever.”

  • Can We Get Married First?  123

Side Story 9: Lin Wei CP (Part 4)

“Let’s get married after the exams. I want to take care of you, for the rest of our lives.”

Wei Zhuoning’s sudden proposal stunned Lin Xiaozhi. She hadn’t expected such a bold declaration from the usually shy Wei Zhuoning.

“Are you, proposing?” Lin Xiaozhi asked, “to me?”

Wei Zhuoning, seeing her reaction, a mixture of surprise and something she couldn’t quite decipher, stopped crying, her voice unsure:

    “Um, yes…”

As she stammered, Lin Xiaozhi held out her hand, her fingers slightly curled.

    Wei Zhuoning: “?”

“If you’re proposing, where’s my ring? Put it on.”

Lin Xiaozhi’s bright smile made Wei Zhuoning speechless.

Seeing her awkward silence, Lin Xiaozhi’s smile faltered.

“So you propose without even a ring? Just a spur-of-the-moment decision, you didn’t really think it through, did you?”

Wei Zhuoning’s face burned: “No, I really mean it, but…”

But she couldn’t afford a ring.

She hadn’t updated her stories in two weeks, this month’s earnings barely enough for her mother’s expenses, let alone a luxury item like a ring.

“Can I owe you one?” Wei Zhuoning held Lin Xiaozhi’s hand, her voice firm. “After the exams, I’ll work hard and earn money! I’ll buy you any ring you want, anything you want, I’ll give you the world!”

Lin Xiaozhi had anticipated this. If Wei Zhuoning had actually produced a ring, she would have been shocked.

She had just been teasing, but seeing Wei Zhuoning’s earnest expression, her anxiety as if their relationship depended on a ring, was endearing.

Lin Xiaozhi thought she knew Wei Zhuoning well, but this was a new side to her.

Being loved by Wei Zhuoning made her feel like the luckiest person in the world.

Seeing Lin Xiaozhi just smiling, not saying anything, Wei Zhuoning grew even more anxious.

“Do you think I’m not being sincere?” She looked down, dejected.

“Silly Zhuoning, rings don’t have to be from a store.”

Although unsure what Lin Xiaozhi meant, judging by her suggestive whisper and her smile, it wasn’t anything innocent.

“Then… what other kind of ring is there?” Wei Zhuoning, however, played along.

Lin Xiaozhi whispered something, and Wei Zhuoning’s face turned crimson.

“What?! You’re always thinking about these things!”

“Oh? So you’re not willing to give me one?” Lin Xiaozhi sighed dramatically. “So you weren’t sincere after all.”

Wei Zhuoning: “…You’re definitely the one who sent me those videos!”

Lin Xiaozhi readily admitted: “Yes, it was me. Figured it out now? Too late. So, are you giving me one or not?”

Wei Zhuoning sighed. It wasn’t like she hadn’t given her one before…

“Yes, yes, but not today, right?”

“Of course not, after the exams. Then…” Lin Xiaozhi tapped her nose. “At least one ring per day, no upper limit.”

    “What?!”

“It depends on how much you love me.”

    “…”

After weeks of grueling studying, the exams were finally over.

It had snowed all night, and the ground was covered in a thick layer of fresh snow. Wei Zhuoning and Lin Xiaozhi ran through Lin Xiaozhi’s private family park, yelling and throwing snowballs at each other.

Wei Zhuoning, seizing an opportunity, stuffed a snowball down Lin Xiaozhi’s jacket.

Lin Xiaozhi yelped, and Wei Zhuoning, laughing, ran away.

But when it came to speed, Lin Xiaozhi was unmatched.

Wei Zhuoning struggled through the deep snow, her shorter legs a disadvantage.

Lin Xiaozhi, however, moved effortlessly, quickly catching up and tackling Wei Zhuoning into the snow.

“Help! It’s cold!” Wei Zhuoning landed softly, not hurt, but her mouth was numb from the snow.

“Now you know what it feels like? You didn’t think it was cold when you stuffed snow down my jacket?”

    “I’m sorry, I’m sorry!”

“Sorry now? Taking advantage of my love for you, huh? I have to teach you a lesson.”

Lin Xiaozhi carried her to a nearby car, brushed off the snow, and helped her take off her jacket.

“You’re sweating, you’ll catch a cold.” The car’s heater was on, and Wei Zhuoning, coming in from the cold, was immediately warm and slightly damp. Lin Xiaozhi helped her remove her jacket, but not her uniform, gave her some hot water, and wiped her forehead with a handkerchief.

Wei Zhuoning, feeling Lin Xiaozhi’s gentle touch, her sweet scent, was slightly dazed.

    ***

“When did you get a car?” Wei Zhuoning noticed the controls.

“My dad’s graduation gift, just this morning. Do you like it?”

“Me? As long as you like it.”

Lin Xiaozhi put her arm around her, had her lean closer, and scanned her face, unlocking the car’s functions:

    “This is our car now.”

    “Huh? Why…?”

“Why not? We’re getting married, aren’t we? What’s mine is yours.”

    Wei Zhuoning remembered her proposal.

“What? Changing your mind now?” Lin Xiaozhi shook her head. “Too late, give me my ring, we’re going to the Civil Affairs Bureau right now.”

“What? Now? Here?” Wei Zhuoning instinctively clutched her collar.

“Going back on your word?” Lin Xiaozhi leaned closer, her warm hand covering Wei Zhuoning’s cold one, removing her defensive gesture. “You don’t want to marry me anymore?”

Wei Zhuoning quickly denied it: “Of course I do! I want to!”

“Then what are we waiting for? I want my ring.”

    “But, in the car…?”

“It’s a new car, we need to bless it.”

    “What?! Wait!”

“No waiting. I’ve waited long enough. Xiao Zhuoning, don’t you want me?”

Lin Xiaozhi gently nibbled on Wei Zhuoning’s ear, making it turn red.

Wei Zhuoning didn’t answer, but her expression and her flushed cheeks gave her away.

Lin Xiaozhi’s fingertip traced Wei Zhuoning’s lips, then gently slipped inside.

    “This is your first ring.”

    “Mm…”

After teasing her tongue, Lin Xiaozhi moved lower.

“There’s another one, give it to me now.”

  • Can We Get Married First?  122

Side Story 8: Lin Wei CP (Part 3)

Wei Zhuoning meticulously cared for Lin Xiaozhi’s sensitive stomach, while Lin Xiaozhi relentlessly pushed Wei Zhuoning’s fragile grades forward. In their final year of high school, even their moments of affection were a luxury.

Wei Zhuoning proposed a deal: “If I get into L University’s literature program, you quit smoking, okay?”

Lin Xiaozhi knew quitting wasn’t easy, but to motivate Wei Zhuoning, she agreed.

During the final exam sprint, not only did Wei Zhuoning’s grades improve, but so did her cooking.

Her mother, seeing her study until past midnight, then wake up before 6 am to prepare breakfast and lunch, even packing two extra lunchboxes, asked:

“Is that extra one for your class president?”

Her mother, seeing her sneakily packing the lunchboxes, teased her.

Wei Zhuoning, seeing her mother’s knowing smile, stammered:

“She’s been helping me study, and she always forgets to bring lunch, she eats takeout all the time. And it’s not healthy for her stomach, she has gastritis, it affects her studies!”

“One simple question, and you give me a whole speech, you’re clearly hiding something.”

    “Mom!”

Her mother chuckled. She knew her daughter was dating the class president. She had overheard their confession.

She had initially thought that Lin Xiaozhi, smart, beautiful, and seemingly mature, might be playing with her naive daughter’s feelings.

Just like she had been played before…

One wrong step could ruin a life.

She knew her daughter, kind and trusting, easily manipulated.

But Lin Xiaozhi was different, unlike anyone she had met in her forty years of life.

“Okay, okay, I won’t tease you. How’s the scar on her arm?”

Wei Zhuoning’s expression turned somber: “It left a scar. She’s been using scar removal products, but it’s not very effective. She’s planning on surgery after the exams.”

“How much does the surgery cost?”

“I’m not sure, maybe tens of thousands of yuan.”

“We should pay for it,” her mother said. “If it weren’t for her, we might have been injured too, even worse. We can’t ignore this.”

“I know,” Wei Zhuoning said, shouldering her backpack. “Don’t worry, I’ll handle it. If you want the food spicier, add some chili sauce. I made a new batch last night.”

    “Okay, I know, go on.”

As Wei Zhuoning was about to leave, her mother stopped her.

    Wei Zhuoning: “?”

Her mother smiled and sighed: “My daughter, you’ve worked so hard.”

Wei Zhuoning, surprised by her words, smiled: “It’s nothing, I’m happy. I’m leaving now.”

“Okay, go on.” Her mother’s eyes were red as she waved goodbye.

    “Will you be alright alone?”

“Yes, Mrs. Zhang will be here soon.”

    “Then I’m leaving?”

    “Yes, go on.”

On her way to school, Wei Zhuoning’s heart ached, remembering her mother’s words. She was the best mother in the world.

It had been raining for two days, the temperature dropping below zero, the ground icy.

As Wei Zhuoning got off the bus, someone slipped and fell right in front of her.

Wei Zhuoning almost fell too, but someone caught her.

“Thank you!” She looked back, recognizing the girl, a classmate from Class 2, known for her long, black hair.

The girl just shook her head and walked away.

Wei Zhuoning, checking the time, realizing she was about to be late again, rushed towards the school gate.

Just as she entered, she slipped, slid several meters, and landed on her knees right in front of Lin Xiaozhi.

They stared at each other for a moment, the attendance AI waiting by the closing gate, ready to record her tardiness.

“Get up, it’s not New Year’s yet, why are you kowtowing?” Lin Xiaozhi helped her up, chuckling. “Don’t worry, you’ll get your red envelope.”

    “I wasn’t kowtowing! I fell!”

    Lin Xiaozhi burst out laughing.

Wei Zhuoning: “…Are you enjoying this? How can you be so heartless!”

“Poor baby, let me see if you’re hurt.” Lin Xiaozhi leaned closer, her gaze on Wei Zhuoning’s neck.

Wei Zhuoning quickly pulled away: “You pervert! And I hurt my knee, not my neck!”

“Who knows, maybe you hurt something else too,” Lin Xiaozhi said, a mischievous glint in her eyes.

Wei Zhuoning suddenly remembered something and quickly zipped up her jacket.

    “No way…”

She remembered last night, after their late-night study session, the school empty, Lin Xiaozhi dragging her to the playground and kissing her for a long time. If Wei Zhuoning hadn’t insisted on keeping things PG in public, her clothes might have been ripped off. Lin Xiaozhi had been very enthusiastic, and Wei Zhuoning had also been aroused, but she had held firm, and Lin Xiaozhi, frustrated, had lingered on her neck for a while.

    Had she left a mark?

Wei Zhuoning’s face paled: “Is there, really a mark?!”

Lin Xiaozhi put her mask back on and coughed softly.

    Damn it! There was!

And she hadn’t been wearing a jacket at home this morning, just her pajamas, had her mom seen it?

Wei Zhuoning glared at Lin Xiaozhi and turned to leave.

    Lin Xiaozhi grabbed her hand.

Wei Zhuoning, unable to shake her off, glared at her:

“What are you doing! Not in public!”

“The ground is icy, what if you fall? I’d be heartbroken.”

    “I’m not that clumsy…”

Just as she said that, Wei Zhuoning slipped and fell on her butt.

Lin Xiaozhi, caught off guard, also fell.

    “…”

They looked at each other, their awkward positions making them burst out laughing.

They continued laughing even after reaching their classroom, earning strange looks from their classmates.

“Are the class president and Wei Zhuoning crazy?”

    “What’s so funny?”

Sha Xinyu shook her head: “You single people wouldn’t understand.”

    Everyone: “??”

During lunch, everyone left except for Sha Xinyu, who, having learned her lesson, wisely chose to nap at her desk, leaving Lin Xiaozhi and Wei Zhuoning alone.

Wei Zhuoning had brought Lin Xiaozhi’s favorite beef dish, slightly spicy and tender.

“How can you cook so well?” Lin Xiaozhi asked, devouring the food. The intense studying and Wei Zhuoning’s delicious cooking had made her gain a few pounds.

“As long as you like it.” Wei Zhuoning was happy to see her enjoy it.

Lin Xiaozhi added: “You’ll be a good wife someday.”

This usually made Wei Zhuoning blush, but today, she just stared at Lin Xiaozhi’s right arm.

    Lin Xiaozhi: “What’s wrong?”

Wei Zhuoning pointed at her arm: “Can I see it?”

Lin Xiaozhi understood: “There’s nothing to see, just a faint scar.”

Wei Zhuoning didn’t speak, just looked at her with pleading eyes.

“Sigh… you’re so persistent.” Lin Xiaozhi rolled up her sleeve. “But promise me, no crying.”

Wei Zhuoning had prepared herself, but Lin Xiaozhi’s words made her realize it might be worse than she imagined.

She nodded, took a deep breath, and then, seeing the long, jagged scar on Lin Xiaozhi’s once flawless arm, felt her blood run cold.

She held Lin Xiaozhi’s wrist, staring at the scar in silence.

“I told you not to cry…” Lin Xiaozhi quickly grabbed a tissue and wiped away her tears. “It’s not that bad, I haven’t had the surgery yet, it’ll be fine after that, as smooth as your cheek.”

Lin Xiaozhi pinched her cheek playfully, but Wei Zhuoning’s tears continued to flow silently.

“Don’t cry, baby,” Lin Xiaozhi pulled her into a hug. “I don’t regret it, not at all. And wasn’t I cool back then? Protecting you, that was the best decision I ever made.”

Her words only made Wei Zhuoning cry harder.

“What’s wrong, Xiao Zhuoning?” Lin Xiaozhi held her tighter. “It’s okay, just let it out, but don’t let the others see you like this when they come back.”

Wei Zhuoning’s voice was hoarse: “Haven’t you bullied me enough?”

“Not nearly enough, but if you let me, I’ll take all the blame. So, how about it?”

Wei Zhuoning pulled away: “You’re crazy!”

Lin Xiaozhi gently wiped away her tears: “No more crying, okay?”

Wei Zhuoning looked at her, took her hands, and, with a newfound determination, said:

“Let’s get married after the exams. I want to take care of you, for the rest of our lives.”

Side Story 7: Lin Wei CP (Part 2)

Lin Xiaozhi knew she couldn’t hide the smell of cigarettes, especially after a deep kiss.

Facing Wei Zhuoning’s worried gaze, she couldn’t think of anything witty to say, and her throat tickled, wanting to cough.

    “Just, couldn’t sleep… cough, cough, cough…”

Lin Xiaozhi put her mask back on and turned away, coughing uncontrollably.

Wei Zhuoning followed and gently rubbed her back, offering no words of reprimand. After the coughing subsided, she handed Lin Xiaozhi her thermos.

Wei Zhuoning’s thermos was also a gift from Lin Xiaozhi.

A white body with a pink clasp, snowflakes adorning the lid. Lin Xiaozhi had loved it at first sight, thinking it perfectly suited Wei Zhuoning.

Anything soft, fluffy, and pink seemed tailor-made for Wei Zhuoning, the perfect colors for a little rabbit.

Wei Zhuoning had received countless gifts from Lin Xiaozhi, from scarves and gloves to clothes and shoes, all carefully chosen by Lin Xiaozhi.

Even in their school uniforms, with Lin Xiaozhi’s skillful accessorizing, Wei Zhuoning had gradually transformed from a girl with a “slum aura” to a stylish young woman.

Lin Xiaozhi loved seeing her look beautiful; she was meant to shine.

Wei Zhuoning, aware of Lin Xiaozhi’s efforts, knew that only by becoming better, prettier, more accomplished, could she be worthy of her.

So she accepted all the gifts, using them every day.

And she worked tirelessly, writing stories, saving half the money for her mother, the other half spent on Lin Xiaozhi.

Lin Xiaozhi’s masks, hair dye, watch, shoes, and backpack were all bought by Wei Zhuoning.

Marking the person you loved with your presence, there was no greater expression of affection.

Wei Zhuoning adored everything about Lin Xiaozhi, her appearance, her personality, every detail memorized, every nuance cherished.

When writing, her female characters often unconsciously took on Lin Xiaozhi’s characteristics.

Were there perfect people in the world?

    Perhaps not.

But in Wei Zhuoning’s world, there was.

And that person was Lin Xiaozhi.

Even her smoking habit, which Wei Zhuoning found repulsive, she tolerated for Lin Xiaozhi’s sake.

She never wanted to change Lin Xiaozhi, but the smoking… it was unhealthy.

Lin Xiaozhi, her hand hidden in her sleeve, pulled her mask down to take a sip of water, then offered the thermos back to Wei Zhuoning.

“Drink more,” Wei Zhuoning protested, seeing that she had barely taken a sip.

Lin Xiaozhi, looking at Wei Zhuoning, who was practically hovering over her, smiled and took two large gulps:

    “Happy now?”

    “Why not finish it?”

“Your thermos will taste like cigarettes.”

“I don’t mind.” Wei Zhuoning pushed the thermos towards her again.

Lin Xiaozhi disliked hot drinks, even lukewarm food upset her stomach, and yet, she preferred cold drinks and food.

She frowned after taking two sips of hot water.

Class was about to start, and Wei Zhuoning pulled her towards their classroom.

Lin Xiaozhi coughed softly as they walked. She was clearly suppressing it, not wanting Wei Zhuoning to worry.

Was it really for her sake? Wei Zhuoning’s heart ached.

After yesterday’s scolding, Wei Zhuoning was much more focused in class, resisting the urge to write.

The only sounds in the quiet classroom were the teacher’s voice and Lin Xiaozhi’s occasional coughs.

As soon as class ended, Wei Zhuoning disappeared. Lin Xiaozhi messaged her:

“Where are you? Weren’t we supposed to study? Why did you run off again?”

Two minutes later, Wei Zhuoning replied: “I’ll be right back, wait for me, let’s have lunch together.”

Lin Xiaozhi looked down from the hallway and saw Wei Zhuoning rushing back from the school gate, holding a small bag.

She could guess what it was.

Wei Zhuoning’s nose and cheeks were red from the cold, her hair slightly disheveled.

“It’s sleeting outside, did you bring an umbrella?” Lin Xiaozhi was waiting for her in the empty hallway.

“No.” Lin Xiaozhi never checked the weather, a little rain or snow never bothered her.

“I did,” Wei Zhuoning said, smiling sweetly, holding up the bag. “I’ll walk you home after school.”

    “What’s in the bag?”

“I asked the pharmacist, they said you might have chronic pharyngitis, it’s not easy to treat, but these lozenges might help, want to try some?”

Wei Zhuoning’s sincerity made Lin Xiaozhi laugh:

“You can’t just ‘try’ medicine, it’s not food.”

    “But I don’t…”

Lin Xiaozhi pulled her into a hug, stuffed the lozenges into her pocket, and cupped her cold cheeks, her warm hands chasing away the chill.

A few passing students smiled knowingly, and Wei Zhuoning blushed.

Not wanting to end the embrace, yet embarrassed by the public display of affection, she held Lin Xiaozhi’s hand, her head down, and whispered:

“Should we go to the rooftop?”

“The rooftop? It’s freezing, why?” Lin Xiaozhi seemed confused.

    “…Never mind.”

Wei Zhuoning pulled away and quickly walked away.

Lin Xiaozhi, seeing her shyness, her heart warming, couldn’t help but smile.

They had been dating for almost a year, and she was still so easily flustered.

Wei Zhuoning always made her feel like they were still in the early stages of their relationship.

“Wait, we haven’t had lunch yet…” Lin Xiaozhi was about to follow when she broke into another coughing fit.

Wei Zhuoning stopped and turned around, seeing her hunched over, clutching her chest, coughing uncontrollably.

“Why are you chasing me?” Wei Zhuoning returned to her side.

“Why are you running?” Lin Xiaozhi retorted between coughs.

“Stop talking, you’re hurting yourself.” Wei Zhuoning took her sleeve, a mischievous glint in her eyes. “I brought you lunch.”

“Really?” Lin Xiaozhi’s eyes lit up.

    “Yes, come on!”

They returned to the classroom, which was almost empty, only Sha Xinyu napping at her desk.

“You made this last night?” They sat in their usual corner, Lin Xiaozhi looking eagerly into her bag.

“This morning,” Wei Zhuoning said, surprised by her enthusiasm.

“You had time to cook this morning?”

“I was making breakfast and lunch for my mom and myself anyway.”

Wei Zhuoning’s head was down as she spoke.

Lin Xiaozhi’s anticipation made her nervous: “It’s just, simple dishes, braised chicken leg, some vegetables, and multigrain rice, I hope you don’t mind…”

“Braised chicken leg? Don’t torture me, give it to me!”

Lin Xiaozhi, seeing her hesitation, snatched the lunchbox.

    “Hey! Be careful!”

Lin Xiaozhi opened the thermos; the food was still warm.

A bed of stir-fried greens, half the container filled with multigrain rice, and a fragrant braised chicken leg placed neatly on top, garnished with two carrot slices carved into the shape of cherry blossoms.

The carving was a bit clumsy, but clearly done with care.

Wei Zhuoning watched Lin Xiaozhi nervously, her heart sinking when she didn’t react.

    Was it too plain…?

“You should eat something, your stomach will hurt later.” Wei Zhuoning promised, “I’ll make you beef stew tomorrow, you like beef, right?”

Lin Xiaozhi put the lunchbox down and kissed her.

Wei Zhuoning, startled, almost fell out of her chair.

“What… what are you doing?!” She glanced at Sha Xinyu and whispered.

Lin Xiaozhi, laughing and coughing: “A thank you kiss.”

“You don’t have to do that! What if someone sees…”

“Let them see.” Lin Xiaozhi started eating. “I can kiss my own girlfriend, can’t I?”

Wei Zhuoning blushed: “Who’s your girlfriend…”

“You are.” Lin Xiaozhi, while eating, wrapped an arm around Wei Zhuoning’s waist.

Suddenly, Sha Xinyu sat up, and Wei Zhuoning quickly pushed Lin Xiaozhi’s hand away.

Sha Xinyu sneezed and went back to sleep. Lin Xiaozhi chuckled.

    “You’re so easily embarrassed.”

    “…You’re just shameless.”

“This chicken is amazing!” Lin Xiaozhi said sincerely. “Imagine, years from now, after a long day at work, coming home to a delicious meal like this…”

“Aren’t you thinking too far ahead?”

“What? Isn’t that your plan too?” Lin Xiaozhi’s eyes narrowed.

Wei Zhuoning imagined living with Lin Xiaozhi after graduation… it was too good to be true. She didn’t dare to dream.

“Of course it is…” She said, lacking confidence.

Wei Zhuoning opened her own lunchbox. Lin Xiaozhi glanced at it:

“Where’s your chicken? Why only vegetables?”

Wei Zhuoning ate quickly: “I don’t like meat.”

“You gave me the chicken, and you didn’t have any yourself?!”

Wei Zhuoning had been spending too much this month, and she could only afford two chicken legs, one for Lin Xiaozhi, one for her mother. She didn’t mind eating vegetables.

“I weally don’t wike it,” Wei Zhuoning mumbled with her mouth full.

“Look how skinny you are! You need to eat meat! Here, have some!”

Lin Xiaozhi tore off a piece of chicken and tried to feed her.

Wei Zhuoning grabbed her lunchbox and ran, Lin Xiaozhi chasing after her.

Wei Zhuoning was surprisingly fast, but Lin Xiaozhi’s long legs caught up to her.

Pinning her against the classroom door, Lin Xiaozhi forced her to eat the chicken.

Sha Xinyu, opening one eye, looked at the couple impassively.

She had stayed up late doing homework, skipped lunch to nap, and now this PDA.(public display of affection)

    Being single was hard.

Side Story 6: Lin Wei CP(1)

“I really can’t… anymore…” Wei Zhuoning gasped, collapsing onto the desk.

“What do you mean ‘can’t’? We’ve barely started.” Lin Xiaozhi’s warm breath tickled her ear.

Wei Zhuoning opened her eyes, looked back at Lin Xiaozhi, and whispered:

“Xiaozhi, please, I can’t take it anymore, I’ve never studied for this long…”

Lin Xiaozhi, unmoved by her plea, shook her head slightly:

“No can do. We agreed on three hours, not a minute less. Don’t tell me you’re going back on your word, Zhuoning?”

Tears welled up in Wei Zhuoning’s eyes as she bit her lip:

“I did say three hours. But I overestimated myself, I can’t do it. Please, Xiaozhi, let me off the hook? Next time, I promise…”

“No!” Lin Xiaozhi’s voice sharpened as she pulled Wei Zhuoning upright. “We agreed that today’s study session is at least three hours! Stop trying to weasel your way out! Trying to seduce me with sweet words? I won’t fall for it! Get up, get up, we have so much to cover, the college entrance exams are just around the corner, and you’re still trying to play games with me?”

Wei Zhuoning, still not giving up, clung to her sleeve, whining and pleading: “Xiaozhi, Xiaozhi… please!”

Damn, where did this adorable creature come from? Usually so shy and compliant, but her clinginess was lethal.

Lin Xiaozhi’s heart melted, she almost gave in.

“No, no, we agreed on studying, nothing else. I paid for this study room. And you’re already trying to slack off? If you didn’t want to study, I would have taken you to my place, we could be in my bedroom right now. But there’s a bed here too, a bit small, but big enough for you. So, Zhuoning, studying or cuddling? Your choice.”

Wei Zhuoning, hearing the word “cuddling” from Lin Xiaozhi’s lips, immediately fell silent.

With less than a month until the college entrance exams, all the senior students were in a frenzy of last-minute studying.

Weekends weren’t for rest, but for even more intense cramming.

Although Wei Zhuoning’s scores had reached the first-tier university cutoff, she was still on the edge.

Lin Xiaozhi had warned her that she wouldn’t be lenient, she would push Wei Zhuoning, even if it meant being ruthless, to improve her scores.

But Wei Zhuoning was still focused on writing stories to earn money, even during class, her mind on her keyboard, pretending to listen while actually writing.

Lin Xiaozhi, however, saw through her act.

As Wei Zhuoning tried to sneak away after school, Lin Xiaozhi grabbed her bag and dragged her to a secluded corner of the playground.

Wei Zhuoning, like a little rabbit cornered by wolves, cowered, her hands raised defensively.

Lin Xiaozhi took out her phone, the cold light illuminating her expressionless face, making her look like a ruthless assassin.

“Let’s see today’s update. 3:20 pm, during math class, over 5000 words, our Zhuoning is quite productive, isn’t she?”

Wei Zhuoning, hearing Lin Xiaozhi’s sweet voice, her usual teasing tone, joined in the playful banter:

“Over two hundred comments, all praising your steamy scene. So, our great author, inspired by our math teacher’s old, virginal face, decided to write some smut?”

Wei Zhuoning scratched her cheek: “Practice makes perfect.”

“Oh?” Lin Xiaozhi’s expression changed instantly, from sweet to sinister. “Feeling proud of yourself? We just discussed your failing math score, and you’ve already forgotten?!”

Wei Zhuoning’s playful smile vanished, replaced by fear.

“5000 words! You should be studying, not writing 5000 words!” Lin Xiaozhi poked her forehead, and Wei Zhuoning almost doubled over.

Where was the gentle and caring Lin Xiaozhi?

She didn’t want to date a disciplinary director!

Lin Xiaozhi, exasperated, said: “From now on, no more keyboard. I gave you that gift so you could write, but you have to have some self-control! What do you think you’re doing?”

    “But…”

“I’ll give it back after the exams. All your free time is mine now, all of it, you’ll study with me, and no more writing, reading, or even thinking about your stories. Just one month, focus on studying, understand?”

With the most important battle of their lives approaching, they couldn’t afford any distractions.

Lin Xiaozhi knew Wei Zhuoning was intelligent, capable of understanding difficult concepts, but her focus was the problem.

As a writer, even a history question could trigger her imagination, and she would start outlining a story.

Her mind, filled with countless universes, was both her greatest strength and her greatest weakness.

Lin Xiaozhi had to be strict, to keep Wei Zhuoning on track.

Even if Wei Zhuoning hated her for it.

She would whip this little spinning top until the exams were over.

After being scolded, Wei Zhuoning quietly followed Lin Xiaozhi towards the school gate.

The temperature had dropped drastically since winter arrived. Wei Zhuoning, wearing the scarf and gloves Lin Xiaozhi had given her, walked with her head down.

“Are you mad at me?” Lin Xiaozhi, her voice softening, took her hand, their fingers interlacing. “Or are you just scared?”

Wei Zhuoning shook her head and mumbled:

“No… I just feel useless, always making you worry.”

She didn’t look up, her gaze fixed on her untied shoelaces.

They walked in silence until they reached the bus stop.

Lin Xiaozhi bent down to tie her shoelaces.

    “Huh?” Wei Zhuoning was surprised.

A student from South Lake Third High was staring at them. Wei Zhuoning blushed and knelt down:

    “I can do it myself.”

Lin Xiaozhi looked up at her, the streetlight illuminating her beautiful eyes.

Tears streamed down her face, surprising Wei Zhuoning.

“Do you think I’m annoying?” Lin Xiaozhi, her chin resting on her knees, her face hidden, her voice trembling, “I just want you to have a better future.”

The bus arrived, but Wei Zhuoning didn’t get on.

She called a taxi and took Lin Xiaozhi home.

They sat side by side, their hands clasped.

Lin Xiaozhi: “You’re taking me home, then you have to go back alone.”

Wei Zhuoning: “You’ve walked me home so many times, let me do this for you…”

She added: “I’ll finish my homework tonight, I promise.”

Lin Xiaozhi wanted to tease her, but couldn’t bring herself to.

Reaching her community, Lin Xiaozhi looked back at Wei Zhuoning.

Wei Zhuoning stood under the streetlight, fidgeting with her backpack straps, watching her.

Seeing that she hadn’t left, the temperature dropping, Wei Zhuoning waved, urging her to go inside, then, forcing a smile, turned and walked away.

Lin Xiaozhi’s heart felt heavy as she entered her house.

Did everyone need a university degree for a better future?

Shouldn’t she let Wei Zhuoning choose her own path?

But she couldn’t convince herself otherwise.

The college entrance exams were still the easiest path to a better life.

Failing them meant a harder future.

Lin Xiaozhi tossed and turned in bed, unable to sleep.

She felt restless. She got up, opened her drawer, took out a pack of cigarettes, and went to the balcony.

She lit a cigarette, the red glow and the wisp of smoke disappearing into the darkness.

She had intended to quit, since Wei Zhuoning seemed to dislike the smell.

But when she was stressed, she couldn’t resist.

After a sleepless night, having smoked half a pack, Lin Xiaozhi’s mouth tasted bitter, and her throat was dry and scratchy.

Her mother asked, “Are you sick?”

Lin Xiaozhi put on a mask: “Maybe a little. I’m leaving.”

    “Breakfast is almost ready.”

    “I’ll eat at school.”

    “Take care of yourself!”

Lin Xiaozhi was still coughing as she scanned her face at the school entrance. Putting on her mask, she turned around and saw Wei Zhuoning standing behind her.

“You scared me.” Lin Xiaozhi adjusted her mask.

Wei Zhuoning looked at her, silent, stepping closer, as if sniffing the air.

Lin Xiaozhi, feeling guilty, quickened her pace.

Wei Zhuoning followed: “Xiaozhi, have you been smoking?”

    Lin Xiaozhi: “No.”

    “I smell cigarettes.”

    “It’s just my cold medicine.”

As they stepped out of the elevator, Wei Zhuoning pulled her in the opposite direction of their classroom, towards the rooftop.

Lin Xiaozhi: “It’s so cold, why are we…”

As soon as they reached the rooftop, Wei Zhuoning removed her mask and kissed her deeply.

    Lin Xiaozhi: “…”

After a while, Wei Zhuoning opened her eyes, her breathing still uneven.

“You were smoking,” Wei Zhuoning’s eyes were slightly red as she looked at her intently, “why didn’t you tell me? Xiaozhi, is it because of me, are you worried about something?”

Side Story 5: Lou Mi x Chi Lin

    “Mom is so ridiculous.”

After Peng Ziyuan left, Lou Mi muttered to herself, as if talking to the older woman.

Chi Lin stood behind her, holding a wine glass, lost in thought. Lou Mi turned to look at her, and their eyes met, a shared understanding passing between them.

Chi Lin, blushing slightly, quickly looked away: “Would Your Majesty like some wine?”

Lou Mi, surprised by her own politeness, said, “Thank you.”

Chi Lin glanced at her, then went to pour the wine.

Lou Mi covered her face with her hands.

It was Peng Ziyuan’s fault, her suggestive comments had made things awkward between them.

    The imagery was too vivid.

Applying the bionic skin to her face and looking in the mirror, she looked almost identical to the younger Chi Lin.

But it was just a mask, unlike the lifelike AI companions manufactured by N-Count, with their simulated nerves and muscles, capable of realistic micro-expressions.

This mask, however, would wrinkle and crease with even the slightest smile, like a snake shedding its skin.

“You have to control your expressions, or your classmates will call the police.”

Lou Mi, while giving Chi Lin instructions, suddenly realized: “Even if your face is disguised, your height and build are completely different, anyone who knows you will be suspicious.”

Chi Lin said: “I don’t have many close friends, I’ll just keep a low profile.”

This made Lou Mi realize that Chi Lin hadn’t mentioned any new friends since starting university.

And she never brought any classmates home, her only close friends still Wei Zhuoning and Lin Xiaozhi, whom she rarely saw.

Being HighTowerMiyuki’s little sister and girlfriend, a professional gamer with a large fan base, made Chi Lin a public figure.

And with her introverted personality, her peers probably found her intimidating, making it difficult to form close friendships.

Chi Lin had never mentioned this, and Lou Mi, busy with work, hadn’t noticed.

Now, hearing Chi Lin’s casual comment, seemingly unconcerned, Lou Mi felt a pang of guilt.

“Come here.” Lou Mi finished her wine in one gulp, sat on the sofa, patted her lap, and beckoned Chi Lin.

Chi Lin obediently sat on her lap.

Lou Mi’s eyes, slightly red-rimmed, were fixed on Chi Lin, her gaze intense, startling Chi Lin, who quickly reassured her:

“I have a full course load, and club activities, I’m really busy. It’s not that I don’t have friends, but we’re not very close. Your Majesty, I’m over thirty, I’ve met enough people in my lifetime, I just want some peace and quiet now, to focus on the things and people I care about, it’s a good thing, why are you upset?”

Lou Mi, holding Chi Lin’s waist, looked up at her.

Chi Lin smiled: “I’m not trying to comfort you, I’m being honest.”

Lou Mi’s tears didn’t fall, and she smiled back:

“So, you can read my mind now?”

    “Not as well as before.”

    “Oh?”

“I used to be able to anticipate your thoughts even when we were miles apart.”

“Like when we teamed up to annoy that clueless Minister of Rites?”

Remembering that incident, Chi Lin laughed, nestled in Lou Mi’s arms.

Having not slept well after last night’s activities, and with the mask becoming uncomfortable, they showered and went to bed, Lou Mi resting her head on Chi Lin’s stomach, chatting about their past and present lives, until they drifted off to sleep.

The next day, Chi Lin wore the mask and a loose hoodie to school.

She was nervous as she scanned her face at the entrance, no one else around.

Her face appeared on the screen, “Scanning, please wait…” The message lingered, making her anxious.

A green checkmark and her name appeared: access granted!

    Technology was amazing…

    Relieved, she went to class.

The large lecture hall, which she hadn’t paid much attention to before, now seemed like a lifesaver.

Chi Lin entered, head down, and sat in the back corner, hoping to be unnoticed.

Her back ached, and she felt uneasy.

Married life was too comfortable, she had even become lax with her morning exercises, let alone other training. Her stamina was declining.

    This couldn’t continue.

Seeing Her Majesty’s enthusiasm, her clear preference for Chi Lin’s true form…

Chi Lin gripped her stylus, her face flushing at the memory of their intimacy.

Having missed the astral convergence, she wouldn’t be able to switch back for three months.

Lou Mi had insisted on driving her to school this morning, her reluctance to leave evident.

Which meant Lou Mi would likely be expecting similar… activities for the next three months…

She had to regain her stamina, she couldn’t disappoint Her Majesty.

As Chi Lin was planning her morning exercise routine, during break time, while gathering her things, she overheard a few classmates whispering, not realizing she was Chi Lin:

“No way… you must be mistaken.”

“I would recognize HighTowerMiyuki anywhere! I’ve been a fan for six years!”

    Chi Lin froze.

Had they seen Lou Mi this morning?

    The whispers continued:

“But the person in the car wasn’t Chi Lin.”

    “Huh?”

“It was a much older woman.”

Chi Lin, who had been eavesdropping: “…”

She had been in the car, without the mask, and Lou Mi had only opened the window briefly in the parking lot, and they had been spotted?

And what did they mean, “a much older woman”? Chi Lin was slightly offended, she wasn’t that much older!

Chi Lin dismissed it as a minor incident and didn’t tell Lou Mi.

She wore the mask throughout the final exams, planning to switch back during summer break.

When the new semester started, the first thing Chi Lin heard was the gossip about HighTowerMiyuki’s new girlfriend.

They had been careful during the past three months, but they couldn’t wear the mask everywhere, especially during summer.

And they weren’t celebrities, their awareness of paparazzi not as sharp. They had been photographed in the parking lot, Lou Mi affectionately putting a mask on Chi Lin’s face, completely oblivious to the lurking camera.

[#HighTowerMiyukiCheating] was trending, the photos undeniable.

Although only half of the “new lover’s” face was visible, it clearly wasn’t Chi Lin.

Fans were outraged, flooding Lou Mi’s Weibo with angry comments and heartbroken cries.

[Sister Lou, how could you do this… Little Lin did so much for you, she loves you so much…]

[Please clarify, tell us you’re not with that old woman, that you only love Little Lin!]

[I’ve cried all my tears, tell me this isn’t true!]

[HighTowerMiyuki, don’t you have anything to say?!]

[HighTowerMiyuki, come out and face the music!]

    ***

Lou Mi, seeing the explosion of comments, felt like she had actually cheated on Chi Lin and wanted to slap herself.

Zhuo Jinglan called immediately: “What’s going on?! What happened between you and Little Sister?!”

    Just then, Chi Lin returned.

Lou Mi, sitting on the sofa, glanced at her: “We’re perfectly fine.”

“Perfectly fine? You’re trending! The entire internet is bashing you, when will you learn to be more careful?!”

Lou Mi sighed. She wanted to tell everyone that her wife could change her appearance, but who would believe her?

“Calm down, Sister Lan, Little Lin is back, we’ll figure something out.”

Zhuo Jinglan sensed that she wasn’t being dismissive, and that these two were probably up to something.

“Fine, I won’t nag. Just protect your reputation, okay? I’ll hang up now.”

As soon as Zhuo Jinglan hung up, Lou Mi threw herself into Chi Lin’s arms, whining about the misunderstanding, blaming herself for being careless.

Chi Lin stroked her head: “It’s okay, Your Majesty, everyone makes mistakes, don’t worry.”

Lou Mi looked up, seeing Chi Lin’s confident smile:

    “I have a plan.”

Lou Mi’s eyes lit up: “Really? A plan?”

    Chi Lin nodded.

Lou Mi had no doubt about Chi Lin’s intelligence. She had made some mistakes when she first arrived, but she was a quick learner.

And Chi Lin was a prodigy!

Now it was Lou Mi’s turn to cling to Chi Lin’s sleeve: “You can really fix this?”

    “Yes.”

    “Will people believe it?”

    “They will.”

Chi Lin gave her a hint, and Lou Mi immediately understood!

    She quickly started preparing.

It felt exciting, like a secret mission, a collaboration across time.

A playful prank, a shared secret.

Ready, Lou Mi told Zhuo Jinglan she was going to live stream.

    Live stream?

[HighTowerMiyuki dares to show her face?]

    [Is she apologizing?]

[I want to see what she has to say.]

[If it’s not a sincere apology, I won’t accept it!]

    ***

Even before the stream started, there were almost five million viewers online.

Zhuo Jinglan: “You’re still popular, I guess. But what are you going to say? Don’t be impulsive!”

    Lou Mi shocked everyone.

    She wasn’t alone.

The “new lover” was sitting beside her.

Their faces appeared on screen, and the chat exploded with question marks.

    [Is HighTowerMiyuki crazy?!!]

[What the fuck?! Am I seeing things?!]

[Is she announcing her new relationship?!]

Amidst the angry comments, Lou Mi sighed and looked down:

“I know I was wrong, I should have told you sooner.”

The comments intensified, almost crashing the platform.

“But it’s not too late, it’s a brand new product, after all.”

[Brand new product? Is she losing it?]

The “new lover” suddenly started peeling off her face, revealing Chi Lin’s familiar features.

[Stop! What kind of horror movie is this?!]

    [Holy shit, that’s terrifying!]

    [I’m going blind!]

Amidst the horrified cries, Chi Lin smiled awkwardly at the camera: “Surprise! It’s me.”

    [??]

    [???]

Lou Mi and Chi Lin held up the peeled-off mask:

“N-Count’s latest bionic fun mask, breathable and realistic! Have your dream date with your idol!”

    [?????]

    [??????????]

“Visit our website, buy one, get one free, custom design available!”

Lou Mi felt like an idiot, her smile stiff.

But what choice did she have? It was her fault for being careless. As long as people believed it, she would endure the embarrassment…

Peng Ziyuan, watching the live stream, almost choked on her noodles.

Lou Lixing looked at her calmly: “Yuan Yuan, when did your company start offering this service?”

Peng Ziyuan, her face red, couldn’t answer.

She wanted to yell, N-Count is a respectable company! We don’t do that!

Chi Lin’s plan worked. Lou Mi’s reputation was salvaged, and they were back to being the adorable couple everyone loved.

But it also sparked another wave of controversy.

    ***

Bonus Scene: Lou Mi x Chi Lin (Little Theater)

Two days later, the customer service representatives at YHK, N-Count’s home AI division, were overwhelmed.

What “bionic fun mask”? They didn’t have such a product!

It was all HighTowerMiyuki and Lin’s fault, that ridiculous live stream promotion!

But the inquiries were pouring in, and since N-Count specialized in dating sims, the mask wasn’t entirely inconsistent with their brand.

    They couldn’t miss this opportunity.

So, YHK presented the idea to headquarters.

When the proposal reached Shi Yue, she declared righteously:

“Absolutely not. We will not create such a vulgar product.”

Xu Youyuan, passing by, chuckled: “Wasn’t the original X system, Little You, modeled after my face? You didn’t find it vulgar then.”

Shi Yue, following her: “That’s different.”

    “How is it different?”

    “You’re my wife!”

    “Not back then.”

“Yes, yes, you weren’t my girlfriend yet.”

“What’s with that tone? You weren’t even honest with me back then!”

    ***

As they bickered and flirted, Little Twelve peeked in from around the corner, entered the lab, and opened the 3D printer, uploading a picture of Chi Lin’s face.

The model was quickly generated. She hesitated before pressing “Print.”

    “What are you doing?”

Little Seven’s sudden appearance startled Twelve, who almost slammed her head into the printer.

    The printing started.

“What are you doing?! You scared me to death!” Twelve scolded her, turning around to see the mask almost finished.

    “This printer is fast…”

    Twelve took the still-warm mask.

Little Seven, seeing it, understood: “Oh, still not over your first crush?”

“I’m not! It was your fault, you startled me!”

“Then I’ll throw it away.” Seven reached for the mask.

    Twelve quickly hid it.

“What? Can’t bear to part with it?” Seven smirked.

Twelve sighed: “Fine, throw it away.”

    “Why?”

“What’s the point? I can’t wear it myself. It’s stupid.”

Twelve sighed sadly. Seven, seeing her heartbroken expression, her eyes reddening, felt a pang of sympathy.

    She took the mask.

    Twelve: “What are you doing?”

Seven put the mask on her own face.

    “You…”

Although the mask was a bit small, not fitting perfectly, it did look like Chi Lin.

    Twelve blushed slightly.

“Better now?” Seven, trying not to laugh, afraid the mask would fall off, took Twelve’s hand:

“Here’s your chance, give Lin Jie your first kiss.”

    She leaned closer.

Twelve’s heart raced as she saw Chi Lin’s face approaching.

Just as their lips were about to meet, Twelve pushed her away.

    Seven: “Huh?”

“You’re bullying me again! I hate you!”

Twelve ran away, covering her face. Seven, removing the mask, followed:

“I wasn’t bullying you, I was helping you!” She giggled.

Her little sister’s anger was so cute.

The twins ran downstairs, and their mothers, witnessing the scene from the other end of the hallway, froze.

Xu Youyuan: “What… did I just see? Shi Yue, tell me, am I dreaming, or are we in ‘Secret Chamber’?”

Shi Yue: “I think we need to have a long family meeting…”

Side Story 4: Lou Mi x Chi Lin

Tiger, having finished his business in the yard, trotted back inside, tail wagging.

Following the sounds, he paused at the bedroom door, hearing his owners’ voices.

Moans and gasps, a mixture of pain and pleasure.

Tiger pawed at the door, whining softly, then, tilting his head, circled the door, confused.

He hadn’t seen his beloved owners all night.

    What were they doing…?

By the time they entered the bathroom, dawn had broken, unnoticed by the two lovers entangled in the dimly lit bedroom.

Emerging from the shower, Chi Lin’s skin was flushed, her body wrapped in a bathrobe, her long hair dripping wet. Exhausted, she leaned against Lou Mi, wanting nothing more than to stay in her arms.

Lou Mi carried her to the bed in the bathroom and gently dried her.

Chi Lin drifted off to sleep, then woke up, a soft smile on her face as she looked at Lou Mi.

“I fell asleep?” Her voice was soft and slightly slurred, the drowsiness adding a touch of vulnerability to her mature features.

“Yes, you dozed off in my arms.”

Chi Lin rubbed her eyes, seeing that Lou Mi was still awake and seemingly not ready for sleep, she tried to stay awake with her.

Lou Mi, noticing her effort, caressed the mole under her eye: “Go back to sleep if you’re tired, I don’t want you to stay up late. Besides, we have plenty of time.”

Chi Lin snuggled closer, her eyes closing, clearly enjoying Lou Mi’s preference for her true form:

“It’s just a pity we can only be together like this every three months.”

Lou Mi was about to reply when Chi Lin suddenly opened her eyes, staring at her intently.

    Lou Mi, startled: “What’s wrong?”

    “What time is it?”

Lost in their passion, they had forgotten about time.

Lou Mi, also exhausted, looked at the clock: 6:15.

    “It’s that late already?”

Lou Mi’s face was still flushed, but the dark circles under her eyes betrayed the late hour.

    She suddenly realized something.

Looking at the time, then at Chi Lin, still beautiful but her face pale, Lou Mi understood.

“No wonder…” She said, “we didn’t fall into the abyss in the bathtub.”

The night was over, the guiding star and the moon had separated again!

Their time together was always too short…

They knew it was short, but they hadn’t expected it to end so abruptly!

Lost in their passion, they had completely forgotten about time!

The abyss was gone; it wouldn’t reopen for another three months.

They stared at each other in dismay.

Chi Lin’s first thought: “I… have class!”

Lou Mi also panicked: “Can someone cover for you?”

“It’s all AI facial recognition now. And I have final exams coming up.”

    They were in trouble.

They wrapped themselves in their bathrobes and rushed to the bathroom, looking at the now-cold bathtub.

There was no trace of the abyss.

Chi Lin reached in and touched the bottom. Lou Mi’s last sliver of hope vanished as Chi Lin shook her head.

    Three months.

There was a two-month summer break after the finals, but what about the next month?

Classes, exams… Chi Lin, in this unfamiliar body, couldn’t even enter the school, let alone take exams.

Chi Lin slumped against the bathtub, tears welling up.

Lou Mi knelt beside her, her face pale, sweating, feeling like she had made a terrible mistake.

Chi Lin had already spent a year retaking the exams, finally getting into a top university’s history program, and now, because of this oversight, her studies would be delayed again.

Seeing Lou Mi’s distraught expression, Chi Lin couldn’t bear it. She sat up and took her hand, sighing:

“I’ll have Mother ask my tutor for a sick leave, maybe I can take a leave of absence. If not…”

The mention of Peng Ziyuan sparked an idea in Lou Mi’s mind.

    “Your Majesty?”

“This might actually work!” Lou Mi jumped up and grabbed her phone.

6:30 am. Peng Ziyuan was already up and getting ready.

Receiving Lou Mi’s call and hearing her explanation, Peng Ziyuan asked incredulously:

“It should be possible, we manufacture lifelike AI companions, you know, the ones that look exactly like humans? If not for the small button on their necks, no one could tell the difference. We can just print a face exactly like Little Sister’s and attach it to one of those.”

Peng Ziyuan, a bold and resourceful woman, was intrigued by the idea.

After a moment of thought, she agreed.

Chi Lin stayed home that day. Peng Ziyuan and Lou Mi returned in the evening with the custom-made face mask.

This was Peng Ziyuan’s second time seeing Chi Lin’s true form, the first time just a brief glance.

Now, she froze as soon as she entered, staring at Chi Lin.

Chi Lin, slightly embarrassed by her intense gaze, instinctively bowed: “Mother…”

“Oh my god, Little Lin, you’re so beautiful…” Peng Ziyuan dropped her bag, rushed over, hugged Chi Lin, and started nuzzling her face.

“So soft, so fragrant, so beautiful.” She kissed her forehead and cheeks, unable to stop touching and smelling her. “I have two beautiful daughters! Let me look at you, your beautiful face…”

Chi Lin, struggling to breathe: “Mother, I’m… suffocating.”

Lou Mi, watching from the side, blushed.

Peng Ziyuan cuddling the younger Chi Lin had been a heartwarming scene, after all, it was her real daughter.

And Little Sister was shorter, their embrace natural and affectionate.

Now, with a mature woman a few inches taller than her, Peng Ziyuan’s enthusiasm was a bit much.

Chi Lin kept looking at Lou Mi for help, but Lou Mi didn’t dare approach them.

She finally managed to pry Peng Ziyuan away and, gasping for air, went to get some water, complaining:

    “Mom, stop that, it’s embarrassing.”

After their marriage, they had both started calling each other’s parents “Mom” and “Dad.”

Peng Ziyuan held up the printed mask: “What, you can have two wives, but I can’t have two daughters? Do you still want this mask or not?”

Lou Mi almost choked: “What two wives?! I only have one!”

“Oh, one wife, but with interchangeable appearances.”

Lou Mi and Chi Lin: “…”

Peng Ziyuan, thinking of Lou Lixing, then, looking at Lou Mi and Chi Lin with envy, said:

Lou Mi: “…Mom, stop overthinking things.”

Peng Ziyuan was curious about Chi Lin’s situation. She knew she was a time traveler, but hadn’t asked for details.

While helping Chi Lin try on the mask, she asked how she switched bodies.

Chi Lin explained about the abyss.

Peng Ziyuan, even more surprised, looked at Lou Mi: “So, you also have another body? And you were an empress?”

Lou Mi didn’t want Peng Ziyuan to know, but Chi Lin, trusting her, had already explained, so Lou Mi just nodded and went to get some milk.

“I understand now,” Peng Ziyuan said, blushing slightly. Chi Lin, seeing her expression, knew she was thinking about something inappropriate. And Lou Mi, of course, had to ask:

    “Understand what?”

“You young people are so playful,” Peng Ziyuan smirked. “Next time, it’ll be Little Sister and the Empress, right?”

Lou Mi choked on her milk, coughing and sputtering.

Side Story 3: Lou Mi x Chi Lin

Chi Lin regretted provoking Lou Mi.

From the moment they entered the apartment, it had been a non-stop whirlwind of passion, until Chi Lin, exhausted, finally begged for mercy.

They lay tangled together, catching their breath, their bodies slick with sweat. Chi Lin, always meticulous about cleanliness, couldn’t stand the stickiness and went to shower.

    Lou Mi followed her.

Chi Lin’s lips were swollen, her body still thrumming with a lingering pleasure, her legs weak.

She had thought the night was over, but Lou Mi, relentless, continued her pursuit even in the shower.

Chi Lin chuckled weakly: “Your Majesty, are you planning to…”

Before she could finish, Lou Mi kissed her again, whispering in her ear:

“How many times did we make love in the Taichu Hot Springs at the Southern Palace? I know Lin Jie loves playing in the water. I had this large bathtub installed just for you. We’ve already enjoyed it in our soul forms, don’t you want to experience it fully now?”

Lou Mi’s words made Chi Lin blush.

It wasn’t her who enjoyed it, it was Her Majesty!

Chi Lin couldn’t argue. Her Majesty, tonight, was as passionate and tireless as ever.

Her Majesty had personally gone to the northern front lines, pulling Chi Lin, barely alive, from a pile of corpses.

Seeing her drenched in blood, her breathing shallow, her eyes barely able to focus, Her Majesty, forgetting all decorum, had held Chi Lin and wept.

Back in the capital, while dealing with political affairs and countless enemies, Her Majesty still made time to care for the injured Chi Lin personally.

It was the most peaceful and blissful time in Chi Lin’s life since entering the court.

Although her injuries were severe, requiring a long recovery, even coughing was painful, being able to see her beloved every day was a luxury for Chi Lin.

During her years in the north, she had eaten hardtack, fought tirelessly, disregarding life and death, just to protect Dayuan, to protect Her Majesty, her beloved.

There were moments of passion, and moments of loneliness.

On countless nights, unable to sleep, she would stand on the city walls, watching the darkness, waiting for the enemy that might emerge at any moment.

Most nights, there were no enemies, only the biting wind and her longing for Her Majesty, keeping her awake until dawn.

She would replay their memories, savoring Her Majesty’s poems, her eyes, her lips, every shared moment.

Would she ever see Her Majesty again?

Chi Lin didn’t dare to dwell on it, afraid of her longing weakening her resolve.

A moment of hesitation on the battlefield, a flicker of fear, could cost lives, could endanger the entire nation.

So, she suppressed her longing, only indulging it in private.

Now, safe and comfortable in the palace, not only could she embrace her longing, but she could also see Her Majesty every day, it was pure bliss.

Waking up every morning to see Her Majesty’s sleeping face, to feel her warm embrace, she would often pause, making sure it wasn’t a dream.

During her recovery, Her Majesty not only applied her medicine personally but also attended to her every need.

There were servants, of course, but as soon as Her Majesty returned from her duties, she would dismiss them all, leaving only the two of them.

Initially, Chi Lin couldn’t accept being served by Her Majesty, but Her Majesty wouldn’t let her refuse, pouting and acting spoiled: “Let me take care of you, can’t I?”

Chi Lin continued to protest, and Her Majesty, annoyed by her persistence, said:

“Lin Jie is injured, fighting for Dayuan, protecting my kingdom. It’s only right that I take care of you.”

In private, Lou Mi preferred the informal “I,” using the royal “Guaren” only in public.

But in intimate moments, all formalities were discarded.

“Little Sister,” “this humble servant,” “your concubine”… she used them all playfully, that was the Emperor’s style.

And Chi Lin couldn’t deny her love for this playful and unrestrained Jin Yi.

After several attempts at refusal, Her Majesty stopped arguing and, lifting Chi Lin’s chin, said:

“Since you call me Your Majesty, you must obey my every command. Now be a good girl and lie down.”

From applying medicine to dressing her, to even putting on her shoes, Her Majesty used her imperial authority for these small, domestic tasks, enjoying every moment.

And Chi Lin, after experiencing this playful dominance, found herself anticipating Her Majesty’s commands.

Her Majesty would find the most comfortable positions for Chi Lin, adjusting and repositioning her.

And if Chi Lin protested, Her Majesty would resume her imperial persona, practically issuing decrees in bed, demanding her “Minister Chi” to cooperate.

This playful dominance, from their past life to this one, hadn’t changed.

Lou Mi pulled Chi Lin into the hot bath, had her lean against the edge of the tub, and embraced her from behind.

The warm, firm pressure against her back, the hot water enveloping her, made Chi Lin feel like she was melting in Lou Mi’s arms.

Lou Mi’s chin rested on her shoulder as she whispered:

“We’ve done this a hundred times in the Taichu Hot Springs, this is your favorite position. You love it when I hold you from behind, when you turn and kiss me, don’t you?”

“Your Majesty keeps track of these things…?”

Just a few whispered words, no actions yet, and Chi Lin’s voice was already trembling.

Lou Mi felt Chi Lin’s body tremble in her arms, her sensitivity to Lou Mi’s voice and touch evident.

Chi Lin’s body, despite years of campaigning, was still beautiful, her skin smooth and unblemished.

Even the faint scars couldn’t diminish her allure.

    They added a certain sensuality.

Lou Mi remembered how much effort she had put into caring for Chi Lin’s body in their past life.

Even in a different body, Chi Lin was still Chi Lin.

Lou Mi knew how to please her.

The slight unfamiliarity of this body, the newness, only heightened the excitement.

Lou Mi tilted Chi Lin’s chin up, urging her to kiss her.

Chi Lin, her eyes closed, responded eagerly.

Lou Mi’s heart swelled with emotion.

This was both a familiar intimacy and a long-awaited reunion.

They had found each other again, across lifetimes, and this time, they wouldn’t be parted.

Side Story 2: Lou Mi x Chi Lin

As Lin Jie’s second kiss deepened, confidently parting Lou Mi’s lips, Lou Mi was certain she must have saved the universe in a past life.

After a moment of intense emotion, Chi Lin’s kiss softened, and Lou Mi, chasing after the retreating lips, deepened the kiss again.

Lou Mi’s body burned, lost in the moment. Chi Lin could feel her heightened passion.

    And there was another detail.

Lou Mi usually held her face or the back of her head, but now, besides their intertwined lips, she wasn’t touching Chi Lin at all.

    The lingering kiss finally ended.

    ***

Chi Lin, seeing Lou Mi’s dazed expression, her eyes unfocused, her mind seemingly elsewhere, chuckled and gently wiped the gloss from her lips:

“Your Majesty, are you still there?”

    Lou Mi: “I’m dead.”

Chi Lin frowned slightly: “Don’t be ridiculous.”

Lou Mi blinked, savoring every detail of the person before her.

She could recall her past life as Jin Yi, but it required conscious effort.

Normally, she was still Lou Mi.

Jin Yi’s memories and personality felt distant, like a veil.

So, facing the real Chi Lin, she felt both Jin Yi’s longing and this life’s fresh excitement.

This was only the third time she had seen the real Chi Lin, and each encounter had been brief.

Although this was Chi Lin’s true form, the one that matched her gentle and courageous soul, Lou Mi was more accustomed to the younger Chi Lin, to being the older sister.

Now, with Chi Lin’s height, appearance, and mature aura, Lou Mi felt a subtle shift in their dynamic.

And Chi Lin, a general, even in modern clothes, in a car with autopilot, still exuded an air of authority.

This unfamiliar yet familiar wife stirred something within Lou Mi.

Lou Mi, gazing at Chi Lin’s slightly swollen lips, wasn’t ashamed of her own eagerness.

“Lin Jie, how do you want to pamper me?” Lou Mi leaned back in her seat, her hands gripping the armrests, biting her lip playfully, acting like a child seeking attention.

Chi Lin smiled: “I’ve already made preparations.”

Lou Mi’s eyes lit up, anticipation bubbling within her.

When did Chi Lin become so playful?

Did changing bodies also change personalities?

Chi Lin opened the glove compartment and took out a pink box.

The small English letters on the box were too small to read in the dim light of the parking garage. Lou Mi only saw the image of an oval-shaped ball.

    An oval-shaped ball…

    Lou Mi’s smile vanished.

    What was this…?

The suggestive color, shape, and the overall atmosphere…

No way… was it a that kind of toy?

    Lou Mi’s mind raced—

Was it what she thought it was?!

She could almost hear the buzzing sound, and she instinctively recoiled.

Lin Jie, wait, wasn’t this a bit too much?!

Chi Lin: “Open it, see if you like it.”

Lou Mi hesitated: “I’m just asking, is this for you, or for me?”

Chi Lin looked puzzled: “I bought it for Your Majesty, of course it’s for you.”

Lou Mi felt she hadn’t been clear enough: “I mean, this thing, is it, uh, for, you know, me to use on you, or you to use on me?”

    Chi Lin: “…?”

The more she tried to explain, the more confusing it became. Lou Mi took the box and opened it, revealing daily vitamin capsules.

Normal-sized pills, not the giant ones depicted on the box.

    Lou Mi: “……”

“Your Majesty has been working too hard, eating takeout all the time, I was worried about your nutrition, so I bought you these vitamins. Lin Xiaozhi said they’re very good, just one pill a day.”

    “So that’s what it is…”

Chi Lin, seeing her flushed face, realized: “Did Your Majesty misunderstand?”

Lou Mi, speechless, wanted to both laugh and cry.

“I was just worried about Your Majesty’s health.”

I’m worried too, Lou Mi thought, worried about myself.

She had thought Chi Lin had finally embraced modern romance!

    But…

Lou Mi covered her face. So, this was how Chi Lin pampered her.

She felt dirty compared to Chi Lin’s pure and innocent heart.

But she also felt a thrill of excitement.

The more innocent and righteous Chi Lin was, the more Lou Mi wanted to corrupt her.

This face, this beautiful face that transcended time, was mesmerizing.

Chi Lin, seeing her staring, slightly embarrassed, called out softly, “Your Majesty.”

Lou Mi sighed: “I’m alive again.”

Chi Lin, slightly exasperated: “Your Majesty, why are you talking about life and death? Have you had dinner? Let’s go home and eat.”

    “Can I?”

    Chi Lin: “?”

“Can I go home with you?” Lou Mi felt like she was asking for a sleepover.

Chi Lin: “…Your Majesty, you haven’t even had any alcohol, why are you talking nonsense? If I don’t go home with you, where am I supposed to sleep, in the park?”

“It feels like I’m inviting a stranger.”

Chi Lin’s usually narrow eyes widened slightly.

She glanced at her own face in the rearview mirror, unsure if Lou Mi genuinely felt a sense of distance from this body.

    “Should I… switch back then?”

    Lou Mi grabbed her wrist:

“Why are you in such a hurry?” Lou Mi cleared her throat and sat up straight, trying to appear more composed. “This is the real you, isn’t it?”

“But don’t you find it a bit strange?”

    Chi Lin was serious.

Lou Mi sighed inwardly. Lin Jie’s obliviousness, regardless of her appearance or the era, was unwavering.

But this also made her even more alluring.

Lou Mi pulled Chi Lin closer and whispered:

“Lin Jie, we haven’t been intimate in these bodies yet. There’s no rush to switch back. Didn’t you say you wanted to pamper me? There are other ways besides vitamins, do you want to try?”

Chi Lin, who had been listening intently with her head down, looked up, her ears turning red.

    ***

Normally, as soon as the door closed, Lou Mi would have pinned Chi Lin against the wall and kissed her senseless.

    But tonight, she hesitated.

She had been bold in the car, but now, alone with Chi Lin, she felt strangely shy.

She entered the apartment and, as she unbuttoned her shirt, glanced at Chi Lin, who was taking off her shoes.

Chi Lin’s tall, slender figure was slightly bent, she wasn’t sitting on the stool, but standing gracefully.

Chi Lin was wearing high heels today.

Lou Mi, tying her hair back, observed her quietly.

Chi Lin put down her purse and turned, revealing her elegant neck. Even from a distance, Lou Mi could almost feel her warmth.

The malachite pendant was a gift from Lou Mi when Chi Lin received her acceptance letter from L University. She always wore it on special occasions.

She was even wearing a matching watch.

Tonight’s Chi Lin was dressed impeccably, her usual neat bun replaced by loose, flowing hair.

    And the perfume…

Lou Mi recognized it; it was her favorite. Chi Lin had chosen this scent…

It was surprisingly alluring on her.

    “Your Majesty?”

Lou Mi, lost in thought, hadn’t noticed Chi Lin approach. She was there, helping her with her jacket.

The buttons were undone, waiting for Lou Mi to raise her arms, but Lou Mi just stared at her, mesmerized.

    Chi Lin gently nudged her.

Lou Mi snapped out of it and raised her arms obediently. Chi Lin removed her jacket, hung it up, then brought her a pajama top.

“Wait,” Lou Mi said. “I told you, we’re equals, we serve each other!”

Chi Lin: “Isn’t it an older sister’s duty to take care of her younger sister? You said that yourself.”

    Lou Mi: “But…”

Chi Lin looked up at her with a hint of pleading in her eyes, making Lou Mi’s legs weak.

“Don’t do that, it’s not fair.”

Chi Lin smiled and continued helping her change.

Her Majesty couldn’t resist her acting cute, and she couldn’t resist Her Majesty’s slightest vulnerability.

    This was their unspoken understanding.

After removing Lou Mi’s shirt and helping her into the pajama top, Chi Lin’s arms wrapped around Lou Mi’s waist as she tied the sash.

The sudden closeness was natural for Chi Lin, but not for Lou Mi.

Lou Mi’s breath hitched, her body temperature rising. She looked down at Chi Lin, her gaze fixed on her long eyelashes and slightly parted lips…

Chi Lin carefully tied the sash.

“Every three months, just one day, let me take care of you completely, okay? I’ll switch back before dawn…”

Before she could finish, Lou Mi spun her around and pinned her against the wall.

    “Your Majes…”

Lou Mi silenced her with a kiss.

“Don’t resist,” Lou Mi’s voice was husky, her eyes burning.

    “Wait…”

Lou Mi pushed her onto the sofa. Chi Lin’s hair was slightly disheveled, her eyes wide with surprise.

“You’re my obedient subject, aren’t you?” Lou Mi suddenly asked.

Chi Lin paused, then replied, “Yes…”

“So you’ll obey my every command?”

Chi Lin, clutching her shirt, nodded silently.

“Good.” Lou Mi smiled, her hand, burning with desire, caressing Chi Lin’s face:

“I’ve regained my memories, I remember everything about the Southern Palace. Every moment, every detail, from that entire year.”

Chi Lin blushed: “Why are you saying this…”

“I remember all of Lin Jie’s favorite positions, her expressions, her pleas…”

    Chi Lin’s breathing quickened.

“Tonight, please follow my every command.”

Side Story 1: Lou Mi x Chi Lin

“Have you heard? HighTowerMiyuki has a new lover!”

“No way! Isn’t she all about her little sister? Everyone knows she’s a total siscon!”

“But this time, it’s an older woman…”

    “Older?”

    “And drop-dead gorgeous!”

    “Seriously? I don’t believe it!”

    “There are photos!”

“Where?! Let me see! Holy shit… is that even human? She’s stunning…”

“Tired of young girls, or does she think older women are more caring?”

“But our Chi Lin is also great!”

The whispering college students, gossiping amongst themselves, suddenly fell silent as Chi Lin entered the classroom.

“Break it up, break it up.”

Chi Lin sat in the back row, opened her tablet, and class began.

Classical Chinese was her favorite subject, a core course for history majors.

The professor was old and a bit pedantic, his lectures considered boring by her classmates, but Chi Lin enjoyed them.

As someone from ancient times, she found the lectures both familiar and occasionally inaccurate.

She noted down her questions to discuss with her tutor later.

Even after starting her work, Chi Lin could still hear the whispers from the front, their occasional glances in her direction.

She had heard their gossip when she entered.

Her Majesty having a “new lover” was something Chi Lin already knew.

“We don’t need you to study something just to earn money, just do what you enjoy, being happy is more important than anything else.”

After deciding to stay in this era with Lou Mi and preparing for the college entrance exams again, Lou Mi still said this to her.

Having experienced the hardships of her past life and the long search for Lou Mi, all she wanted was for Chi Lin to be happy and carefree in this life.

Lou Mi had bought an apartment near L University, close to Chi Lin’s school, and insisted on driving her every day, no matter how busy she was.

On nice days, they would walk through the small park connecting to the back entrance of L University.

Managing her own club initially took a lot of time and effort, but Lou Mi was quick to learn and adapted well. Soon, the company was running smoothly, and she had more time to take care of Chi Lin’s daily needs.

Although Chi Lin wanted to be the one taking care of her.

“It’s my duty as your subject and your wife,” Chi Lin had said seriously.

Even in the modern era, certain principles couldn’t be disregarded.

Raised in Dayuan, she was still a person of Dayuan at heart.

Lou Mi was the Emperor, she was a subject, how could she let the Emperor serve her?

Last time, at home, when Lou Mi bent down to tie her shoelaces, Chi Lin had been startled.

“Your Majesty, you mustn’t!” She had knelt immediately, trying to stop her.

Lou Mi had found her reaction amusing: “What’s wrong? We’re married, I can pamper my wife, can’t I?”

    Chi Lin couldn’t explain…

She knew Lou Mi had memories of both lifetimes, but the customs of Dayuan were just memories, they influenced Lou Mi’s personality, but she was still a modern person, still Lou Mi.

So, to Lou Mi, tying her wife’s shoelaces was a small gesture of affection.

But Chi Lin couldn’t accept being served by Lou Mi.

Even though she had adapted to modern fashion, this was where she drew the line.

No matter how much Lou Mi insisted, how much she acted spoiled, Chi Lin wouldn’t allow it.

Lou Mi found it both amusing and endearing.

She wanted to pamper her wife, but her wife wouldn’t let her, insisting on returning the favor.

Chi Lin’s obedience in bed was already captivating enough, and now she insisted on taking care of everything outside of it.

Cooking, cleaning, dressing her… Lou Mi wasn’t allowed to lift a finger.

And not only that, but there was always a plate of fruit waiting for her, along with a sweet kiss.

“Be good, Your Majesty, I’ll get your clothes. Wait for me.”

After a quick peck on the lips, Chi Lin would fetch her clothes from the closet.

Lou Mi, enjoying the perfectly washed and prepared cherries, would sigh contentedly.

She had only saved Dayuan, but it felt like she had saved the entire universe, to be rewarded with such a capable, caring, and devoted wife.

    But still…

Now that life was peaceful, she wasn’t even allowed to pamper her wife?

Chi Lin tried an ancient method of scenting clothes and was pleased with the results. The fragrance was subtle, only noticeable up close, and long-lasting—a scent exclusively for Chi Lin.

“Your Majesty, come here. Aren’t you meeting with the team and the trainees today? This outfit is both professional and stylish. I’ve also chosen a few options for cufflinks, brooches, and other accessories, take your pick.”

Chi Lin presented her with the clothes and the jewelry box. Lou Mi, impressed by her impeccable taste, couldn’t decide.

Just a few years in this era, and her fashion sense was already so refined.

“These are all beautiful,” Lou Mi said. “Which ones do you like?”

“I picked them out for you on Saturday, while you were busy with the company, I went shopping with Wei Zhuoning and Lin Xiaozhi.”

“These accessories must have been expensive.”

“I used my tournament winnings,” Chi Lin quickly explained, assuring her she hadn’t spent their household money.

Lou Mi smiled and lifted her chin with a finger: “I know, you’re so thoughtful. And it’s all our money anyway, why are you being so formal?”

Chi Lin blushed slightly at her touch.

They had both been busy lately, with little time for intimacy, even a casual touch made her heart race.

Her first year of university courses wasn’t heavy, but it felt like a whole new world.

She enrolled in as many elective courses as possible, joined various clubs, and often consulted Wei Zhuoning, who was also studying Chinese literature at L University.

“Lin, ask me anything, I’m always here to help.”

Having spent a year retaking the exams due to her trip back to Dayuan, Chi Lin was now Wei Zhuoning’s junior.

Lin Xiaozhi had pushed Wei Zhuoning relentlessly, finally getting her into L University. Lin Xiaozhi herself was studying law at J University, two blocks away, her goal to enter politics.

She visited L University whenever she had time, and the three of them, although not seeing each other every day like in high school, remained close.

Lou Mi, although retired, was still missed by her fans.

She occasionally posted on Weibo and streamed, but spent most of her time managing her company and training new players.

Meetings took up most of her time. Even as a professional player, she had many meetings, but as the CEO, it was even worse.

After a few months, she had lost weight, even her bust size decreased, making her worry.

    This couldn’t continue!

She called Zhuo Jinglan, offering her a high-paying job at her company.

“Do you know how much I celebrated when you retired from Nine Heavens? Finally free from your tyranny, and now you want me to jump back into the fire? Am I crazy?”

“Annual salary of 1.5 million,” Lou Mi said, “plus year-end bonuses.”

Zhuo Jinglan: “…When do I start?”

    “Anytime.”

    Zhuo Jinglan, without hesitation, agreed.

Using the same tactic, she poached Fu Tu and Xie Buyu, offering them coaching positions, no more grueling competitions.

Xie Buyu, who had been wanting to retire and enjoy a comfortable life, immediately accepted, dragging Fu Tu along with her.

Their former club contacted Lou Mi:

“Lou Zong, you can’t just leave and take the entire Nine Heavens team with you! We don’t mind Chi Lin following you, but poaching Zhuo Jinglan and the others is a bit much, isn’t it?”

Lou Mi negotiated a deal, offering them generous compensation.

Fu Tu was touched: “See, Sister Mi truly loves us! Spending money and pulling strings just to keep us by her side!”

Xie Buyu: “Is this love? Or is this the beginning of us being worked like mules? How can you be so naive after all this time?”

    Fu Tu: “…”

Having her old friends around was convenient. They freed up Lou Mi’s time, allowing her to spend more time with Chi Lin.

She still had to go to the company today, but not too early, she could relax at home in the morning.

Chi Lin also had a late class at 10:15. She woke up early, prepared breakfast, and laid out Lou Mi’s outfit, carefully chosen with love.

Lou Mi picked up a pair of airplane-shaped cufflinks with blue gemstones. Chi Lin smiled inwardly; she also thought they were perfect for Lou Mi.

    Lou Mi: “These are beautiful.”

Chi Lin held out her hands, expecting Lou Mi to give her the cufflinks so she could put them on her, then place the other chosen accessories on a tray.

Lou Mi, instead of giving them to her, kissed her fingers, then placed the cufflinks on the tray herself.

Lou Mi said earnestly: “Honey, stop acting like you’re waiting to be served, okay? I’m your Empress, but I’m also your wife. We’re living in this era, let’s follow its customs. We’re equals, there’s no serving, only love. If anything, we serve each other.”

    “But…”

“No buts, you’re my ‘little sister’ now, I’m the one who pampers you.”

Lou Mi picked up a pair of champagne-colored sunglasses. As Chi Lin instinctively reached for them, Lou Mi playfully put her finger in her mouth.

Chi Lin quickly pulled her hand back, blushing.

Lou Mi tapped her forehead: “Still being naughty? Do you want a lesson from Big Sister right now?”

Chi Lin didn’t argue with Lou Mi calling herself “Big Sister.” She helped her gather her things and saw her off.

That evening, as Lou Mi was about to leave the office, she received a message from Chi Lin.

The usually voice-message-loving ancient person had sent a text message:

“Your Majesty, if you’re done, come downstairs, I’m in the parking lot.”

Lou Mi, sensing a surprise, went downstairs and found Chi Lin’s car.

The window rolled down, revealing a mature and beautiful face that made Lou Mi’s heart race.

It was Chi Lin, in her original body, Lin Jie herself!

Before leaving Dayuan, Chi Lin had given the Blood Essence Pearl to the new Empress, asking her to continue repairing it.

A year ago, re-entering the abyss, she had noticed its increased stability, the Pearl must have been fixed.

For convenience, she had been using her younger sister’s body, but Lou Mi’s playful comment this morning had prompted her to switch back?

Lin Jie was wearing Lou Mi’s black dress, the collar slightly unbuttoned, revealing a delicate pendant.

Her long, dark hair, styled loosely, gave her an elegant yet modern look.

Her makeup was light, her eyes like a clear lake, gazing at Lou Mi.

    Lou Mi was momentarily speechless.

The car door opened, and Lou Mi got in. Lin Jie leaned closer and kissed her.

“Your Majesty,” Chi Lin’s voice was mature and smooth, sending shivers down Lou Mi’s spine.

“May I pamper Your Majesty now?”
