    Chapter 50: Gu Hanshuang

The three continued deeper into the tomb. The air here was dry, unlike the damp tunnel, and rich in spiritual energy. Although not as dense as a Blessed Land, it was still a comfortable environment.

They soon found a herb garden and, after exchanging glances, began harvesting, stripping it clean.

They took roughly equal shares, with Mingyan taking slightly more, as he had led them out of the formation.

He stored the herbs in his Qi Sea.

Seeing this, the young master and Zeng Qi were even more certain that Mingyan’s true cultivation was higher than Great Brook Realm. Only those who had reached the Illuminating Sea Realm could store items in their Qi Sea.

The herbs were of good quality, although not as potent as the one Yue Qingying had given him. They would still be helpful if he was injured.

They continued deeper, and Mingyan noticed more small holes in the walls. He frowned. “Have you seen these creatures before, outside?”

“No. Perhaps they’re some kind of subterranean creature mutated by the corpse Qi?” the young master suggested. “I hope the treasures within this tomb haven’t been damaged by these monsters.”

“These creatures have probably lived here for thousands of years. The tomb’s owner must have perished before the current Great Emperor ascended. That’s at least fifteen hundred years. They’ve probably made this place their home… I’m sure some things have been damaged.” Zeng Qi sneered. “I’ll kill every single one I encounter. Perhaps I’ll even find something valuable on their corpses.”

Mingyan’s eyes flickered. Zeng Qi had a point. The creatures might have hidden some of the tomb’s treasures. He would have to keep an eye out.

He had refused the earlier offer to team up, but now, they were essentially acting as a team.

The tomb was vast and surprisingly devoid of traps. They only occasionally heard the sounds of something crawling in the darkness, likely those red-furred creatures.

They continued harvesting herbs as they explored. They soon found a chamber with a stone coffin inside.

They exchanged glances. The young master said, “This coffin… likely belongs to the tomb’s owner… There might be some burial offerings inside…”

Are we really going to open someone’s coffin? Mingyan grimaced. Wasn’t that a bit disrespectful…?

Zeng Qi picked up a small stone and threw it at the coffin. Before it could make contact, the coffin glowed, and the stone disintegrated.

“There’s a restriction on the coffin. We can’t open it easily,” Zeng Qi frowned.

“It’s too dangerous for us to try and force it open with our current strength,” the young master shook his head. “Let’s look for other things. Don’t touch this. It could be fatal.”

“Let’s split up. It’s bright enough here. We’ll be able to see those red-furred creatures if they try to ambush us.” Zeng Qi glanced at Mingyan and the young master. The young master thought for a moment, then nodded. “Seeking opportunities separately is a good idea. What do you think, Fellow Daoist?”

Splitting up wasn’t ideal, but the other two clearly wanted to act alone, not wanting to share their findings. Mingyan nodded in agreement.

They left the chamber and continued exploring separately.

The young master and Zeng Qi quickly left. Mingyan stood before the coffin and bowed respectfully. “Senior, please forgive my intrusion…”

This was essentially grave robbing. He hoped the tomb’s owner wouldn’t be too offended.

He straightened up and left the chamber.

He wandered through the tomb and found a flower garden, which surprised him. This was underground. How could flowers grow without sunlight?

He looked up and noticed faint runes carved above the garden, emitting a gentle glow that illuminated the flowers.

This senior had even created a flower garden within his tomb… Quite elegant.

Mingyan examined the flowers. They were all unfamiliar species, fragrant and vibrant, filled with spiritual energy. An idea struck him.

Ordinary cultivators couldn’t store living things in their Qi Sea. Flowers would quickly wither and die. However, spirit fruits, once picked, were considered inanimate and could be stored. His Qi Sea was different, containing a sun and moon… Could he grow flowers inside?

He carefully dug up a flower and stored it in his Qi Sea, planting it in the ground there.

It would take some time to see if it would survive. He looked at the other flowers and noticed a few unique specimens.

Their stems were icy blue, their petals silvery white, shaped like crescent moons, exuding a serene and tranquil aura. He approached, touched a leaf, and felt a cool sensation… He pondered for a moment, then decided not to pick them.

    He continued exploring.

He remained vigilant, wary of the small holes in the walls, in case those red-furred creatures attacked.

He eventually found a room. The furniture inside was well-preserved: a bed, a table, even a wine pot and cups.

Mingyan was surprised. Had the tomb’s owner lived here before his death? Perhaps, knowing his end was near, he had chosen to spend his final days here, then laid himself in the coffin when the time came…

Mingyan was silent for a moment. High-level cultivators could sense their approaching death. Waiting for death must be a terrible feeling.

He noticed a book on the bedside table and, after confirming there were no restrictions on it, picked it up and opened it.

The book, made of an unknown material, must have belonged to the tomb’s owner. It was well-preserved despite being over a thousand years old.

It seemed to be the senior’s diary, containing his thoughts and experiences during his final days.

“My lifespan is nearing its end. Although I’m grateful to have reached the Human Gateway Realm, I can’t help but feel a tinge of regret that my journey ends here. These past few days, I’ve been trying things I’ve neglected before. I’ve tried living like a mortal. I’ve gathered many beautiful flowers, especially those Tranquil Half Moon flowers. I’ve inscribed formations to preserve them. A human’s lifespan can’t be extended by formations, but a flower’s can. I hope they’ll continue to bloom after my death, and perhaps, many years from now, someone will stumble upon this place and marvel at their beauty.”

Tranquil Half Moon? Mingyan’s eyes widened. Were those the flowers he had seen earlier?

“I have seven days at most. I initially wanted to donate all my belongings, but I changed my mind. I’ve cultivated for two thousand years, yet I have no companion, no descendants. I’ve sacrificed too much for cultivation… But someone will likely find this place after my death. I’ve left my belongings outside the coffin. I hope they’ll take them and leave, not disturbing my peace.”

“I’ve arranged for everything, except for this dragon tendon. It’s too precious. It’s a pity I obtained it too late to use it for my weapon. I’ve thought about it for a long time and decided to bury it beneath the formation in the flower garden. If someone who loves flowers is willing to water them, they’ll find it…”

    Dragon tendon?!

Mingyan was stunned. He had simply been curious about the senior’s thoughts before his death, but he hadn’t expected to find such valuable information. He put away the diary and returned to the flower garden.

There was no water here. He extended his hand, and spiritual energy condensed into rain, watering the flowers.

This consumed a significant amount of his spiritual energy, but the dense energy within the tomb quickly replenished his reserves.

As he watered the flowers, they seemed to become even more vibrant. The formation beneath the garden shimmered, and an old wooden box emerged from the edge of the garden. Mingyan opened it and found a translucent, shimmering tendon inside, radiating a strong Yang energy. This must be the dragon tendon. He tried to lift it, but it was incredibly heavy, far beyond his strength. He stored it in his Qi Sea.

Just as he did, he heard a noise behind him. He instantly dodged, turning around to see one of the red-furred creatures trying to ambush him. Its face was hidden by its fur. It turned to flee, but Mingyan, using the Wind Spirit Steps from the Wind Spirit Scripture, quickly caught up and crushed its head beneath his foot.

That was close… These creatures were incredibly cunning, always attacking when he was distracted. He couldn’t let his guard down…

He heard more noises, but this time, it wasn’t the creatures. Were those… people? He hesitated, then hid himself.

A few cultivators appeared in the flower garden, noticing the creature’s corpse.

“It seems we were too late. Someone has already been here.”

There were three cultivators, two women and a man. The man was handsome, and the women were also quite beautiful. Ugly cultivators were rare. Most of those Mingyan had encountered were quite attractive.

“Someone beat us to it… They probably took the herbs from the garden as well. If I find them, I’ll make them spit it all out,” the man said angrily.

“Forget it. Finders keepers. Don’t be a bandit,” one of the women rolled her eyes.

Mingyan, hidden in the shadows, noticed they were all wearing tokens with special markings, similar to his Wind Spirit Moon Shadow Sacred Land token. Could these be Sacred Land disciples?

“Hmph, that depends on whether they have the strength to keep it.”

“Let’s continue. I heard there’s a Sacred Land disciple inside. Don’t let your guard down.” The other woman, who had been silent, finally spoke. “After this, we still have a mission. We can’t let Gu Hanshuang return to the Southern Continent.”

    “Yes…”

They soon left. Mingyan frowned. Prevent Gu Hanshuang from returning to the Southern Continent?

He had heard that name before. Yue Wu Xia had mentioned him when describing special constitutions. Gu Hanshuang was the top genius of the Southern Continent, possessing the Tai’a Physique, granting him an innate affinity for weapons.

It seemed they were planning to assassinate Gu Hanshuang…

He had stumbled upon something significant. Mingyan pondered, then decided not to reveal himself. He continued studying the diary left by the Human Gateway Realm senior. Perhaps there were other clues hidden within its pages.

    Chapter 49: Trapped

Mingyan also didn’t want to return alone. Doing so would put him in danger. Something was clearly following them, and traveling alone would make him an easy target. He couldn’t act recklessly without knowing the creature’s strength.

Besides, he had already entered the secret realm. Leaving empty-handed would be a waste.

The three continued deeper into the tunnel.

It was far deeper than Mingyan had imagined. He had thought a tomb, even a large one, wouldn’t be this extensive. He had misjudged.

They didn’t know how far they had descended, following the spiraling tunnel downwards. The deeper they went, the wider and darker it became. They relied on the light from the spiritual butterfly to see.

“This is too deep… Are we trapped in some kind of formation, lost and disoriented?” The young man felt uneasy. At their current speed and depth, they should be dozens of miles underground. The air at such depths should be incredibly thin, but although the air here wasn’t dense, it wasn’t suffocatingly thin either.

“Something is definitely wrong… We should stop and examine our surroundings,” Mingyan agreed, stopping in his tracks. “And this space is so vast, yet there’s no echo when we speak. Isn’t that strange?”

The young master nodded. They examined the tunnel walls, walking towards the edge.

The walls were rough and uneven, with many crevices and protrusions, ideal for climbing. Mingyan tried to break off one of the protrusions, but it was incredibly hard. Despite his immense strength, he couldn’t budge it. He was slightly surprised.

This meant that if something was climbing on the walls, it wouldn’t fall easily, making it stealthy and silent.

“A corpse? Why is it here?”

The young man suddenly exclaimed. Mingyan and the young master rushed over and saw the same corpse they had encountered earlier, lying in the same position.

“We’re definitely trapped in a formation. Continuing downwards is pointless. We have to break the formation.” The young master’s expression turned serious. “To break a formation, we need to find its core. Have you noticed anything unusual about this place?”

Both Mingyan and the young man shook their heads. “Let’s split up and search for anything out of the ordinary. But don’t go too far. If what Fellow Daoist said is true, that creature might attack us while we’re separated. Our priority is to break the formation. Losing anyone would make our situation even more dangerous. So, I hope you’ll put aside any other thoughts and help each other. If you encounter any danger, warn the others immediately.”

The young man nodded. Despite his earlier arrogance, he wasn’t foolishly overconfident. “If you’re in danger, I’ll do my best to help.”

    “Likewise,” Mingyan nodded.

The young master nodded, and they split up, searching for anything unusual.

Mingyan examined the holes in the tunnel walls, pondering.

The creature might not be affected by the formation. Could it be using these holes to move around within the tunnel?

But the holes were only large enough for one person to crawl through. They couldn’t stand upright inside, and two people wouldn’t fit. There might be more than one creature. If other creatures lived within the holes, entering them would restrict his movements and be suicidal.

However, staying trapped in the formation was also a death sentence. The spiritual energy here was thin, and none of them had reached the Qi Sea Realm, so they couldn’t generate their own energy. Once their reserves were depleted, they would be vulnerable to attack. Staying here wasn’t a good option. Mingyan’s eyes flickered as he thought of a solution.

Suddenly, his hair stood on end, and he leaped back. In the dim light of the butterfly, he saw a dark red figure emerge silently from one of the holes, its cold claws reaching for him. If he hadn’t reacted quickly, it would have slashed his throat.

“Fellow Daoist?” The young master rushed over, hearing the commotion. “What happened?”

The young man also arrived, looking puzzled.

“Something attacked me from one of these holes. It was too dark to see clearly, but it seemed to be dark red.” Mingyan was calm. As a hunter, he had been attacked by wild beasts before and knew that panicking could be fatal. “There might be more than one creature in this tunnel… Perhaps many…”

“…Did you sense its strength?” the young master asked, frowning.

Mingyan shook his head. “No. And these creatures don’t seem to be affected by the formation. I suspect these holes allow them to bypass the formation and leave this area. But the holes are too small for us to pass through comfortably. Entering them would restrict our movements, and they’re likely the creatures’ lair…”

“Entering them would be unwise,” the young master agreed, deep in thought. “But we can’t stay here forever… Neither Zeng Qi nor I are at the Qi Sea Realm. The spiritual energy here is thin, and we can’t replenish our reserves effectively. If we wait too long, we’ll be drained and become easy prey.”

So, the young man’s name was Zeng Qi.

“We should use our remaining energy to try and escape through these holes,” Zeng Qi said, his eyes flashing. “Since these creatures only dare to attack stealthily, they must be weaker than us.”

“But these holes were clearly made by the creatures. They’re likely a labyrinth. Even if we enter, we might not be able to find a way out.” Mingyan shook his head. “It’s too risky. We should try to find another way to break the formation. If there are no other options, then we can consider this.”

The young master nodded. “I agree. Let’s try to conserve our spiritual energy. This butterfly is made with a special technique and only provides light. It doesn’t consume much energy, so don’t worry. Conserve your strength in case of emergencies.”

After Mingyan’s encounter, they decided to stay together and search for clues about the formation.

They searched for a while but found nothing. The tunnel was dark, damp, and seemingly endless, with only the faint glow of the moss and the mysterious holes in the walls.

Mingyan carefully observed their surroundings. After cultivating the Wind Spirit Scripture, his sensitivity to air currents had increased significantly.

There was a faint airflow within the tunnel, which was why the young man had been able to smell the blood. The air was clearly flowing in a particular direction. Mingyan started walking against the current, and the other two, although unsure of his reasoning, followed him.

The airflow was strange, bending and twisting within the vast space, as if blocked by invisible walls, forced to flow through small crevices…

Mingyan realized the airflow wasn’t coming from the holes in the walls. To confirm this, he stood at the entrance of several holes and sensed the air inside. There was no flow. These holes were likely contained within the tunnel, not leading to the outside. Entering them would only lead them in circles, potentially to their deaths.

So, where was the airflow coming from? Mingyan thought for a moment. Either there was an opening to the outside world somewhere, or it was coming from the entrance where they had entered.

He shared his discovery with the other two.

“Is that so? I’ve heard that following certain paths within a formation can lead you out without breaking its core,” the young master nodded. “We can try.”

“Let’s not waste any more time,” Zeng Qi said impatiently. Being trapped here wasn’t a good idea.

Seeing they agreed, Mingyan began tracing the airflow, the other two following closely behind, cautiously scanning their surroundings.

The airflow twisted and turned, as if colliding with invisible walls. Mingyan followed its path, leading them in circles, seemingly random, but there was a pattern.

He realized there was a hidden maze within the tunnel, and the airflow was coming from its entrance. This strengthened his conviction. He quickened his pace. After about half an hour, he felt a sudden change. The spiritual energy density increased dramatically. He looked around, surprised. Their surroundings had completely changed.

“This is…? Weren’t we just in the tunnel? How did we get here?” Zeng Qi, who had been following him closely, was also surprised.

“It means we’ve left the formation… This is likely the true secret realm,” the young master said.

Before them lay a vast, open space, resembling an underground cavern. The area gradually brightened, although there was no visible light source. A faint medicinal fragrance filled the air, and the spiritual energy was abundant, a stark contrast to the tunnel.

“Look out!” Zeng Qi suddenly pushed Mingyan forward. He stumbled, regained his balance, and turned around to see the young master stomping on a dark red creature, its head crushed, its brains splattered everywhere.

The creature was small, about the size of a monkey, covered in red fur. Its blood and brains mixed together, creating a foul stench. Its claws were short and black, looking incredibly sharp.

“Hmph, that despicable creature tried to sneak attack us while we were distracted,” Zeng Qi snorted.

“Thank you,” Mingyan said, surprised by Zeng Qi’s actions. His first impression of this young man had been negative. He seemed arrogant and condescending. And now, even after leaving the formation and no longer needing Mingyan’s help, he had saved him…

“It was just a simple push. There’s no need to thank me,” Zeng Qi shook his head. “Besides, although we’ve left the formation, there might be other dangers ahead… Having another person increases our chances of survival. Life is more important than treasures.”

“That’s the right attitude.” The young master lifted his foot. His boots were clean, untouched by the blood and brains. He chuckled. “There’s no need to fight to the death. Opportunities are for those who are lucky… We don’t need to kill each other.”

Mingyan looked ahead, observing the cavern. The spiritual energy here was dense, but he still saw small holes in the walls, similar to those in the tunnel. These creatures could also access this area…

“This creature wasn’t very strong, probably around the Great Brook Realm. But a surprise attack could still be dangerous, even for an Illuminating Sea Realm cultivator, especially since our strength is still suppressed… We need to be careful.” The young master examined the creature’s sharp, black claws, flicking one with his finger. It produced a metallic sound.

“Let’s continue. There must be some spirit herbs in this cavern. We seem to be the first to arrive. Let’s gather them before anyone else does,” Zeng Qi said.

Chapter 48: Entering the Secret Realm

“I heard that the Holy Master of the Wind Spirit Moon Shadow Sacred Land recently accepted a sixteen-year-old Great Brook Realm cultivator as a personal disciple…” the arrogant young man who had dismissed the other cultivators looked at Mingyan intently. “The rumors can’t be true. That person must be stronger than Great Brook Realm… Otherwise, a Holy Master wouldn’t be interested… let alone make an exception and accept him as a disciple.”

The young master’s expression turned thoughtful. “Fellow Daoist… could you be…?”

The other talented cultivators nearby also looked at Mingyan with renewed interest, their minds racing.

Mingyan closed his eyes, neither confirming nor denying.

The young master smiled. “Regardless of whether Fellow Daoist is that lucky chosen one, once we enter the secret realm, it’s fair game. Opportunities are for those who can seize them. I’m sure Fellow Daoist agrees.”

Mingyan opened his eyes and nodded. This was a subtle warning, telling him they wouldn’t hold back in competing for resources, regardless of his status. His master likely wouldn’t want him to rely on his status to complete this trial. Yue Wu Xia had said strength was more important than status. In the cultivation world, power was everything.

The young master nodded, smiling. Seeing Mingyan’s reticence, he didn’t press further.

As the restriction on the tombstone weakened, more and more people arrived. However, anyone below the Yin Tomb Realm was driven back by the arrogant young man. No one dared challenge him.

He was around Mingyan’s age but already at the peak of the Yin Tomb Realm. Even Rain Terrace Blessed Land didn’t have such a talented disciple. Although they had some Yin Tomb Realm cultivators, they were only at the early stage and already adults, far inferior to this young man.

More people arrived, some approaching directly without being stopped by the young man. They must have reached the Yin Tomb Realm. Mingyan noticed some of them looking at his token with serious expressions, seemingly recognizing its significance.

He wondered how he could compete with these stronger cultivators and obtain resources that would satisfy his master…

Perhaps he could use their misconception about his cultivation level to his advantage. Since they weren’t sure of his true strength, he had more options. But he couldn’t overdo it, or he might be exposed.

Mingyan pondered. After some time, the crowd became agitated.

He looked towards the tombstone and saw the runes almost completely dissolved. If this restriction was truly set by a Rotating Core or Human Gateway Realm cultivator, why was it so weak? How could these cultivators break it so easily?

Strange… Mingyan’s eyes flickered. “Fellow Daoist, how was this place discovered?”

“There was a large earthquake in this area recently. This place appeared after the earthquake. The restriction was significantly weakened by the earthquake. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be able to enter with our current strength.” The young master, hearing Mingyan speak, smiled and explained, “According to the information I received, this is likely the tomb of a peak Rotating Core, half-step Human Gateway, or Human Gateway Realm cultivator, likely a rogue cultivator, not affiliated with any major Sacred Land or family. He probably perished here during a golden age without a Great Emperor.”

A golden age without a Great Emperor… Mingyan remembered Yue Qingying’s story about the founders of the Wind Spirit Moon Shadow Sacred Land, Great Empress Yue Ying and Human King Feng Ling.

She had said that when someone achieved enlightenment and became a Great Emperor, the Heavenly Dao would suppress other cultivators, preventing them from reaching the same level. This was an uncontrollable force, even the Great Emperor couldn’t stop it. Great Empress Yue Ying had given up her second life, choosing to perish with her husband, showing their deep love. Didn’t they want to spend another ten thousand years together? But the Heavenly Dao was cruel. Only one Great Emperor could exist at a time. Once someone became Emperor, no one else could.

This suppression also affected other cultivators. Currently, only Sacred Lands and prominent families with deep foundations could cultivate Human Gateway Realm Holy Masters. It was almost impossible for rogue cultivators to reach such a level. But in golden ages without a Great Emperor, rogue cultivators reaching the Human Gateway Realm wasn’t unheard of.

Yue Wu Xia had told him he was destined to become a Human King. He wondered if he would be affected by the Heavenly Dao’s suppression.

“The restriction is almost gone. Fellow Daoist, we should prepare to enter,” the young master said, watching the runes on the tombstone disappear completely.

As the last rune vanished, the ground trembled, and a staircase, wide enough for several people, emerged from behind the tombstone, revealing a dark, deep tunnel.

The arrogant young man was the first to rush into the tunnel, followed closely by the young master. Mingyan also entered without hesitation.

The Wind Spirit Scripture contained several movement techniques, which, combined with his strong physique, made him incredibly fast, almost as fast as the young master, who, seeing Mingyan keeping pace, became even more convinced he was hiding his true cultivation level and grew wary of him.

The other onlookers also tried to enter, but those who had broken the restriction stopped them. “Stay back. With your cultivation levels, entering is suicide.”

“Why do you say that? This secret realm isn’t yours. Why can’t we enter?” A disgruntled Illuminating Sea Realm cultivator, who had been prevented from approaching earlier, protested. Now that the arrogant young man was inside, he saw an opportunity.

The cultivator who had broken the restriction looked at him coldly, then withdrew his hand. “Do as you please. Don’t blame us if you die.”

Most of the onlookers rushed in. Only a few, seeing those who had broken the restriction remaining outside, hesitated and stayed back.

The tunnel walls were covered in glowing moss, illuminating the damp and chilly passage. Mingyan followed the young master, then noticed he was slowing down. Mingyan even overtook him, which he found strange.

“There are laws within this tunnel suppressing our cultivation!” the young master said, his voice filled with surprise.

Suppressing cultivation? Mingyan sensed his surroundings but felt no suppression. This was even stranger.

They soon caught up to the arrogant young man. Seeing them approach, he spoke. “Do you also sense the laws within this tunnel affecting us?”

“Yes…” the young master nodded. “You too?”

“Hmph… I don’t know what kind of laws they are, but my strength has decreased slightly. It’s not a significant hindrance.”

“Decreased slightly?” The young master pondered, then smiled. “It’s not affecting me much either… Fellow Daoist, are you also affected?”

    Mingyan nodded. “Yes.”

He wasn’t actually affected, but he didn’t reveal this. He didn’t know what was happening to them, but their weakened state was advantageous for him.

“It must be a restriction left by the tomb’s owner, weakening those who enter,” the young master said. “So, everyone inside this secret realm will be affected.”

He glanced at Mingyan. His own speed had decreased due to the suppression, but Mingyan’s hadn’t. This meant Mingyan was likely stronger than him and therefore less affected. He grew wary. This person’s true strength was probably at least at the early Yang Tomb Realm, perhaps even higher.

“…I smell blood…” the young man frowned, detecting a faint metallic scent. “No one should have entered this place for many years…”

“Perhaps the earthquake injured or killed some creatures living within the secret realm,” the young master suggested. “Let’s continue. We don’t know what dangers lie ahead. Be careful, both of you.”

“Don’t worry, even if you die, I won’t,” the young man sneered and continued onward.

    Mingyan followed silently.

The tunnel, initially narrow, gradually widened. The three of them maintained a similar pace. Although Mingyan was faster, he didn’t rush ahead, choosing to stay with the other two. Although he suspected they might have ulterior motives, having two companions would be helpful if they encountered any danger. Rushing ahead alone could make him a pawn, a test subject for them to gauge the dangers. Although he was kind, he wasn’t foolish enough to do that in this situation.

The tunnel sloped downwards, winding deeper into the earth. As they continued, it widened further, the air growing thinner and the spiritual energy weaker, but the smell of blood intensified.

The young man frowned. “This blood is fresh. The earthquake was several days ago. If it was from creatures injured or killed during the earthquake, it should have started to decompose by now…”

The young master cautiously scanned their surroundings. “This place is strange. If it’s a tomb, why is it so deep?”

“Something is watching us,” Mingyan said. His sharp senses detected something lurking in the darkness.

“…I don’t sense anything…” The young master closed his eyes, then shook his head. “Perhaps you’re mistaken, Fellow Daoist.”

The young man also shook his head. “I don’t sense anything either. Are you scared?”

Mingyan looked around, seeing their disbelief, and didn’t say anything more, but he remained vigilant.

They continued deeper. The glowing moss on the walls couldn’t fully illuminate the widening tunnel, and it grew darker. The young master waved his hand, and a butterfly formed from spiritual energy flew ahead, lighting their path.

The tunnel walls were uneven, with many crevices and holes large enough for an adult to pass through, their destinations unknown. The other two also noticed this.

“…Something feels wrong…” The air grew colder, and the sound of dripping water echoed through the tunnel. The young man became wary. “The smell of blood is getting stronger.”

“It’s human blood,” Mingyan said. He had sensed something following them since they entered the tunnel. Now, sniffing the air carefully, he recognized the scent of human blood. As a hunter, he could easily distinguish between animal and human blood.

“What’s that?” The young master noticed something protruding from one of the holes in the wall and directed the butterfly towards it. Before it could approach, something fell out of the hole and landed on the ground, motionless.

The stench of blood intensified. They couldn’t see clearly in the darkness. The young master guided the butterfly closer, illuminating the object… It was a corpse!

“A corpse?” The young man looked puzzled. It seemed to be a human body, lying face down, the ground beneath it wet and sticky. He approached and turned the body over, then stumbled back in horror. “This! This!”

The corpse’s abdomen had been ripped open, its organs missing, leaving only mangled flesh and blood. The expression on its face was one of pure terror, as if it had seen something horrifying before dying.

“I think I saw this person earlier. He was watching us from the side. How did he get ahead of us? And how did he die?” The young master’s eyes widened in shock as he recognized the corpse. “How is this possible?!”

“He hasn’t been dead for long,” Mingyan said, examining the body, his brow furrowed. “Less than half an hour… There are bite marks all over his body… He must have been captured and devoured by something… There’s something terrifying living in this tunnel…”

“Didn’t you say something was following us earlier?” the young man asked, taking a deep breath.

Mingyan nodded. “Yes… It’s likely the creature that killed this person… These holes in the wall must be its doing, allowing it to move around… It probably captured and killed this person while we were approaching and brought the body here… Those holes are probably shortcuts…”

“…Since it’s only following us and hasn’t attacked, it must consider us a threat.” The young man pondered, then his eyes hardened. “I’m going to continue. If you’re scared, you can go back.”

“I should be the one saying that.” The young master’s expression turned serious. “But I suggest we stay together. We don’t know that creature’s strength… It’s safer to travel as a group. We can discuss the treasures later, after we’ve dealt with any potential dangers.”

    Chapter 47: The Secret Realm

After leaving the tavern, Mingyan was about to leave Nan Ming City when he realized he was being followed again. This made him wary.

The last time he was here, a strange woman had followed him for quite a distance. Was he being targeted again?

He turned into a few alleyways, discreetly observing his pursuers. There were three male cultivators, all stronger than him, their exact cultivation levels imperceptible. They didn’t seem to be hiding their intentions and were approaching quickly. “Fellow Daoist, please wait.”

Mingyan stopped. They were still on the main street. Surely, no one would dare cause trouble here. He frowned. “What do you want?”

“We saw you seemed interested in the secret realm near Nan Ming City and wanted to form a team with you.”

One of the men, dressed in blue, tall and handsome, spoke to him with a smile. The other two wore purple robes. The man in blue seemed to be their leader.

Form a team with me? Mingyan’s mind raced. He couldn’t sense their cultivation levels, so they were either ordinary people or much stronger than him. Since they mentioned the secret realm, they couldn’t be ordinary people. They must be stronger cultivators and could likely tell he was only at the Great Brook Realm. Why would they want to team up with him?

He quickly realized they must have recognized his Wind Spirit Moon Shadow Sacred Land token and wanted to avoid making an enemy of him.

Mingyan’s eyes flickered. He didn’t know these people. Although his identity as a Sacred Land disciple might offer some protection, if these three were working together, he could be at a disadvantage when it came to splitting the spoils. And if they found a valuable treasure, greed could drive them to do anything.

Teaming up was a good idea, but not with strangers. He politely declined their offer.

The man in blue looked disappointed. “If Fellow Daoist isn’t willing to team up, then so be it. But let’s at least be friends. We can cooperate and avoid unnecessary conflict.”

They seemed wary of him. Mingyan realized his Sacred Land disciple identity was quite useful.

Unbeknownst to him, these were the same cultivators who had assumed he was concealing his true cultivation level. They believed he was likely at the Yang Tomb Realm or higher and, combined with his special token, didn’t want to antagonize him.

Mingyan nodded. “Naturally, opportunities depend on fate. There’s no need to force anything.”

The three men, seeing he wasn’t interested in cooperating, left. Mingyan also left Nan Ming City shortly after.

Although his senior sister had told him about Master’s fondness for the Tranquil Half Moon flower, she hadn’t mentioned where it grew. He would have to find that information himself. But for now, completing his master’s trial was the priority.

The instructions for his trial were vague. There were no specific requirements for success or failure. She likely wanted him to act independently. In that case, the best outcome would be obtaining any treasures within the secret realm.

After leaving Nan Ming City, Mingyan headed towards the secret realm’s location.

The area was called Cloud Covered Forest, a bamboo forest. A few hundred miles wasn’t far for him, and he arrived quickly.

As he approached, he noticed more and more cultivators gathering, all drawn by the prospect of treasures.

Such a location held little interest for powerful cultivators like those at the Rotating Core or Human Gateway Realms. It was more suitable for training younger disciples. Therefore, most of the cultivators here were young, many around Mingyan’s age or slightly older. However, he was likely the weakest among them in terms of cultivation.

The bamboo forest was dense, the bamboo stalks thick and sturdy, their leaves still green and vibrant even in autumn. The spiritual energy here was quite dense. If not for the news of the secret realm, this would be an ideal place for retirement…

Mingyan followed a group of cultivators heading in a particular direction.

They soon reached a clearing where the bamboo had been cut down, leaving only the fragrant stumps.

Dozens of people were gathered around a tombstone in the center, their hands clasped together, runes flickering around them. The laws inscribed on the tombstone were slowly dissolving.

Mingyan realized the secret realm was actually a tomb…

Being a cultivator wasn’t always glamorous. One might be powerful and respected in life, but after death, their tomb could become a tourist attraction, visited by countless people. If they were unlucky, cultivators might even fight within their tomb, potentially destroying their coffin… Mingyan grimaced. When he died, he would prefer to have his ashes scattered in the forest, following the customs of his village, rather than be buried…

That being said, he wouldn’t miss this opportunity. This was his first trial from Yue Wu Xia, and he wanted to impress her.

As a few people from his group tried to approach the tombstone, someone shouted, “Unauthorized personnel are forbidden to approach! You trash who haven’t even reached the Yin Tomb Realm, get lost!”

Mingyan frowned. So, only Yin Tomb Realm cultivators could enter? He would have to find another way…

Someone protested, “Why can’t those below Yin Tomb enter? We discovered this place together. Opportunities are treasures of heaven and earth, meant for everyone. Are you trying to monopolize it?”

“If you disagree, step forward, and I’ll crush your skull. Let’s see if you still disagree then.” The speaker was a young man, about fifteen years old, with delicate features and an arrogant demeanor.

The protester fell silent. Mingyan frowned and touched the token at his waist. If he couldn’t approach openly, he would have to find another way. He wasn’t familiar with this area and didn’t want to waste time trying to enter. By then, the treasures inside might be gone.

He looked around. Besides the dozens of cultivators trying to break the formation, there were many others, their cultivation levels imperceptible, but their clothes suggested they were from prominent families.

Most people in Nan Ming City hadn’t recognized his token, but these people surely would. He stepped forward, walking towards the center.

The arrogant young man, seeing Mingyan’s Great Brook Realm cultivation, was about to mock him when he noticed the token and fell silent, looking away. Mingyan realized they recognized it.

The cultivator who had questioned the Yin Tomb Realm restriction earlier, who was at the Illuminating Sea Realm, saw Mingyan approaching and the young man’s silence. He became agitated and asked again, “Why are you letting this Great Brook Realm cultivator approach?”

“Step forward and ask me yourself,” the young man glared at the crowd. “Don’t hide among them. Come stand before me, and I’ll tell you why.”

“If you’re a Sacred Land disciple, you can also approach,” another young man in elegant attire added with a smile.

“What? A Sacred Land disciple? Is there a Sacred Land disciple here?”

This caused a commotion in the crowd. Many turned to look at Mingyan.

Someone asked, puzzled, “Why is this Sacred Land disciple only at the Great Brook Realm?”

“That’s none of your business,” the young man replied coldly.

Mingyan, having just approached, overheard this and rolled his eyes discreetly. This young man’s words were as sharp as needles, but he was defending him, nonetheless.

The young man in elegant attire smiled at Mingyan. “Fellow Daoist, join us. We’ll enter the secret realm together and then explore separately.”

Mingyan nodded, knowing they had recognized his identity. This saved him the trouble of finding another way to enter… or rather, to seek opportunities.

“That young master is the genius from the Wan Xu Blessed Land, who’s already at the early Yang Tomb Realm!” someone in the crowd exclaimed, recognizing him.

“Early Yang Tomb Realm…? He must be highly valued even within a Sacred Land…”

Early Yang Tomb Realm? Mingyan’s eyes flickered. His competitors weren’t to be underestimated. He needed to be careful.

“That other young man is also a genius from a Blessed Land, apparently from the Tong Yun Blessed Land. I heard he’s at the peak of the Yin Tomb Realm!”

“The others must also be talented individuals from prominent backgrounds…”

“The Blessed Lands seem quite interested in this place… Even the Sacred Lands have sent people… This opportunity must be significant.”

Mingyan observed the crowd. There were many people, but those closest to the center, besides the cultivators breaking the formation, were all young, around his age. Only the one at the early Yang Tomb Realm looked a bit older, likely already an adult.

Seeing Mingyan looking at him, the young master smiled. “Judging by your token, Fellow Daoist, you’re a disciple of the Wind Spirit Moon Shadow Sacred Land? May I ask your true cultivation level?”

True cultivation level? Mingyan understood. The young master had noticed his special token and assumed he was a disciple of an elder, believing his cultivation level was higher than it appeared…

Mingyan smiled. “As you can see, I’m only at the Great Brook Realm.”

He was telling the truth, but since they already suspected he was hiding his true strength, telling the truth would only reinforce their suspicion.

As expected, the young master’s smile faltered slightly. “If Fellow Daoist isn’t willing to reveal it, then I won’t pry.”

    Chapter 46: Gathering Information

Mingyan looked at the spirit herb in his hand, feeling a surge of gratitude.

Since completing his revenge and being guided to Rain Terrace Blessed Land by Ning Feixuan, he had met many kind people.

Liu Yunfeng, Liu Mengli, Xia Yanming, Huang Feiyan, Huang Junru, Huang Junyi, Yue Qingying…

He had once thought the cultivation world was cruel and unforgiving, a world of constant struggle for survival, but now, it seemed he had been mistaken. Although cultivators did fight fiercely for resources and dominance, there was also warmth and kindness.

He stored the herb in the spatial pouch Huang Junyi had given him. Although he could store items in his Qi Sea, using it in public could reveal his Great Brook Realm cultivation to those stronger than him, attracting unwanted attention.

    Mingyan resumed his cultivation.

Two days later, as he was studying the combat techniques in the Wind Spirit Scripture, Yue Wu Xia’s voice echoed in his mind. “Mingyan, come to my cottage.”

He immediately went outside and saw her standing at her door, beckoning him.

    Mingyan approached and bowed. “Master.”

“The recruitment is over. Wear this token on your waist. It signifies you’re a disciple of the Wind Spirit Moon Shadow Sacred Land and my personal disciple. It carries my mark. If any cultivator far stronger than you targets you, my mark will sense it.” Yue Wu Xia’s figure remained blurry, as always, hidden in mist, adding to her mystique.

She flicked her finger, and the token flew to his waist, attaching itself. “Those younger cultivators will only know you’re a disciple of the Sacred Land. Although the news of me accepting you as my disciple has spread, it hasn’t reached everyone yet. So, this token won’t protect you from all dangers. Besides, your own strength is your greatest reliance, not your status.”

    “This disciple understands,” Mingyan nodded.

“Your trial is simple. Do you know Nan Ming City?”

“I passed through it on my way here, Master.”

“Recently, an elder reported the appearance of a secret realm a few hundred miles west of Nan Ming City. Go and investigate. You’ll be going alone. I won’t offer any assistance. You’ll have to rely on yourself. I’ve observed you diligently cultivating the Wind Spirit Scripture these past few days. The location isn’t far from the Sacred Land, so other major powers will think twice before interfering. You should be able to handle this, but don’t let your guard down. We can’t completely rule out the possibility of other Sacred Lands getting involved.” Her voice was cold and emotionless, but less so than Huang Junru’s, whose voice was like glacial ice, chilling to the bone.

    “Disciple understands.”

“Go. If you find any opportunities, seize them. There’s no need to report back to me.” Yue Wu Xia turned and entered her cottage.

Mingyan returned to his room, packed his belongings, and prepared for his journey.

When he emerged, he found Yue Qingying waiting for him at the edge of the island.

    “Senior Sister.”

Yue Qingying smiled, her face unveiled. As she had said, there was no need for pretense between them now that they were senior and junior siblings.

“Junior Brother, be careful on your journey. If you were at my level of cultivation, I wouldn’t be worried, but you’re only at the Great Brook Realm. No matter what, your life is your top priority. Here, take this.” She handed him a small slip of paper. “Open it after you leave the Sacred Land.”

Mingyan looked at the paper and nodded. “Thank you, Senior Sister.”

“Go now.” Yue Qingying smiled at him. She was much warmer and gentler than he had initially thought. He appreciated her kindness and wouldn’t forget it.

“Then, Senior Sister, I’ll be going now.”

“Return quickly. I wish you a safe journey.”

Mingyan bowed respectfully, his token hanging at his waist. “Thank you, Senior Sister.”

He then leaped off the island.

The Holy Master’s Hall was below, only a few dozen meters away. Unable to fly, he adjusted his posture mid-air and landed in front of the hall.

The stone tiles on the ground glowed faintly. Despite falling from such a height, he hadn’t damaged them… and he himself was unharmed, thanks to his strong physique and the protective layer of spiritual energy.

He looked up at the floating island, which seemed hazy and indistinct, as if invisible to others, only visible to those Yue Wu Xia allowed.

Mingyan turned and continued his descent.

Along the way, he encountered several disciples who seemed to recognize him and looked at him curiously, but no one approached him. He simply smiled and continued down the mountain, eventually leaving the Wind Spirit Moon Shadow Sacred Land.

Two days later, Mingyan arrived at Nan Ming City.

Since the secret realm was near Nan Ming City, he decided to gather information here first.

He wore the Wind Spirit Moon Shadow Sacred Land token, but it was different from ordinary disciples’ tokens and didn’t attract much attention. The cultivators in Nan Ming City weren’t particularly powerful or well-informed.

Only a few recognized his identity and found his Great Brook Realm cultivation strange.

A Sacred Land disciple with a special token, yet only at the Great Brook Realm? Wasn’t that odd? If he was accepted into a Sacred Land and even had a special token, he must be a disciple of an elder or someone important. He should at least be at the Yin Tomb or Yang Tomb Realm by now. They assumed he was concealing his true cultivation level.

Mingyan, unaware of this, noticed a few people looking at his token. Although Master Yue Wu Xia had said it wouldn’t protect him from all dangers, it would certainly deter some trouble.

Being a Sacred Land disciple carried weight. Since he was alone on this mission, he would utilize every advantage he had… He wasn’t foolish.

He ordered a pot of wine and listened to the conversations around him.

“I heard that genius from the Wan Xu Blessed Land in the east, who just reached the early Yang Tomb Realm, has also arrived… Nan Ming City hasn’t made a statement yet. I wonder what they think about this secret realm.”

“What can they do? They probably don’t want to compete. This is a big deal. I heard even some Sacred Lands are involved. The Wind Spirit Moon Shadow Sacred Land might even send disciples to investigate. If you’re not at the Yin Tomb Realm, don’t even bother. There might even be Holy Sons and Holy Maidens at the Qi Sea Realm competing for it.”

“Other Sacred Lands are involved? This place is so close to the Wind Spirit Moon Shadow Sacred Land. Aren’t they afraid of offending them?”

“Afraid of what? They’re all Sacred Lands. The Wind Spirit Moon Shadow Sacred Land won’t start a war just because someone else obtained the treasures from a nearby secret realm.”

    “That’s true…”

Mingyan’s eyes flickered. So, other Sacred Lands were involved. And it seemed he would be facing disciples stronger than himself. This wouldn’t be easy.

He remembered the slip of paper Yue Qingying had given him and took it out, unfolding it.

“Master is fond of a spirit flower called the Tranquil Half Moon. If you encounter any during your trial, bring some back for her.”

Tranquil Half Moon? Mingyan memorized the name. His senior sister was trying to help him improve his relationship with their master, even telling him about her preferences…

The characters for “Tranquil Half Moon” looked slightly different from the rest of the note, written in Yue Qingying’s elegant handwriting, but these four characters were even more beautiful… Did she also like this flower? He should bring some back for her as well.

Mingyan put away the note, continued drinking, and listened for more information.

“…What kind of treasure is it?”

He hadn’t heard the first part of the conversation. He listened intently.

“No one knows for sure. I heard it might be something left behind by a Rotating Core or Human Gateway Realm cultivator. If that’s true, it’s no wonder the Blessed Lands and Sacred Lands are interested.”

“Why would a Sacred Land be interested in something left behind by a Rotating Core or Human Gateway cultivator? Don’t they have plenty of their own?”

“If it’s a valuable treasure, wouldn’t it be attractive to ordinary disciples? Not everyone is a Holy Son or Holy Maiden, pampered by the Sacred Land. Ordinary disciples have to fight for their own opportunities. And if it’s something left behind by a Human Gateway cultivator, there might be unexpected surprises, even enough to tempt a Holy Son or Holy Maiden.”

“…I still don’t understand what kind of treasure it is…”

Mingyan finished his wine and left the tavern. A few people noticed his departure, exchanged glances, and followed him.

Chapter 45: The Human King Physique

After Yue Qingying left, Mingyan hesitated for a moment, then walked towards Yue Wu Xia’s cottage.

“Master, this disciple wishes to inquire about my constitution. Knowing my own strengths and weaknesses will prevent future miscalculations,” he said, bowing respectfully at the door.

The cottage was silent. Mingyan waited, but there was no response. Slightly disappointed, he was about to turn back when he heard Yue Wu Xia’s voice. “Your constitution is unique. Before today, have you heard of any special constitutions?”

Mingyan straightened up, hearing her voice. “This disciple is ignorant and has not.”

“Among the renowned geniuses of the Eastern Continent, Ning Zetian, Holy Son of the Yu Heng Sacred Land, possesses the Dao Harmony Physique, granting him an innate affinity for the Dao and accelerating his cultivation. He’s already at the Divine Gate Realm. Ning Feixuan, Holy Maiden of the Yaochi Sacred Land, possesses the Western Spirit Physique, which is quite mysterious, and I know little about it. However, the Queen Mother of the West, the former Great Emperor of Yaochi, also possessed this physique. An Canhui of the Xiu Hu An family possesses the Limitless Physique, granting him exceptional learning abilities. He’s considered a top contender for the title of the most talented cultivator in the Eastern Continent. Gu Hanshuang, the undisputed top genius of the Southern Continent, possesses the Tai’a Physique, granting him an innate affinity for weapons. He’s undefeated among the younger generation of the Southern Continent.”

“Special constitutions generally grant cultivators unique abilities or advantages in cultivation. There are also special bloodlines, such as Huang Feiyan of the Huang family, a descendant of the ancient Phoenix God Clan. Her bloodline grants her exceptional regenerative abilities and offensive power.”

“As for you, you possess the Human King Physique.”

“I know little about this physique. I only saw a brief description in an Emperor’s tomb when I was young. When I imparted the Wind Spirit and Moon Shadow Scriptures to you, I confirmed your physique. Your natural spirit channels, potent blood and Qi, and strong Yang energy all match the description I saw… It only had one comment about this physique: ‘Born to become a Human King.’ If I’m not mistaken, ‘Human King’ refers to the Human King Realm. This means, barring unforeseen circumstances, you’re destined to reach the Human King Realm.”

Yue Wu Xia’s voice remained cold and indifferent. “The Huang family should know more about this physique. Families, unlike Sacred Lands, have more comprehensive ancient records. They likely have detailed information about the Human King Physique. If you’re curious, you can ask them.”

Born to become a Human King? Mingyan clenched his fists, his heart pounding with excitement…

The Human King Realm… second only to the Great Emperor Realm…with no rival below the Emperor…

“So, there’s no need for self-doubt, but don’t become arrogant either. Physique doesn’t determine everything. There have been nearly a hundred Great Emperors throughout history, and not all of them possessed special constitutions. Focus on building a solid foundation and increasing your strength. That’s what you should be doing.”

“This disciple understands, Master,” Mingyan said, taking a deep breath to calm his excitement.

“Although you’re talented, don’t forget you’re only at the Great Brook Realm. Any Yin Tomb Realm cultivator can easily kill you. An undeveloped genius is no different from an ant. Improving your strength is paramount. After the recruitment is over, I’ll arrange some trials for you. Prepare yourself during this time. Although you’re my disciple, whether you can satisfy me remains to be seen.” Yue Wu Xia’s voice was cold. “Go cultivate. Don’t disturb me unless you have questions about your cultivation.”

“Disciple obeys,” Mingyan bowed his head.

Silence fell over the room. Mingyan sighed.

Destined to become a Human King? He pondered. This meant, barring unforeseen circumstances, he would eventually reach the Human King Realm. It was only a matter of time…

In that case, perhaps reaching the Qi Sea Realm from Great Brook within two years wasn’t impossible?

Catching up to those holy children and young masters wouldn’t be easy. They were also improving. But he would catch up eventually. He had to. Mingyan’s resolve hardened. He entered the cottage Yue Qingying had built for him, sat cross-legged on the bed, and closed his eyes to cultivate.

The four minor realms of the Spring Opening Realm—Spring Gushing, Gathering Stream, Great Brook, and Illuminating Sea—were all about quantitative change leading to qualitative change. The abundant spiritual energy on this island would greatly accelerate his cultivation. He was confident he would break through to the next level soon.

He also began studying the Wind Spirit and Moon Shadow Scriptures Yue Wu Xia had imparted to him.

He had cultivated using Rain Terrace Blessed Land’s Rain Terrace Scripture, which now seemed inadequate. After all, it was created by a Rotating Core Realm cultivator and couldn’t compare to an Emperor-level scripture. Moreover, he noticed many similarities between the Rain Terrace Scripture and the Wind Spirit Scripture, reminding him of a rumor in Rain Terrace Blessed Land.

It was said that their founding ancestor had once been a member of the Wind Spirit Moon Shadow Sacred Land but had left for unknown reasons… He also remembered Yue Qingying’s story about the Sacred Land’s history. To curb the rampant promiscuity, they had expelled many elders and disciples… Could the founder of Rain Terrace Blessed Land have been one of those expelled elders? The more he thought about it, the more likely it seemed…

Perhaps after being expelled, he had decided to found his own sect. Since the Wind Spirit Scripture couldn’t be shared due to restrictions, he had created the Rain Terrace Scripture based on its principles.

Comparing the two scriptures, Mingyan found the difference was vast… The Rain Terrace Scripture contained less than one-fifth of the Wind Spirit Scripture’s content and lacked its numerous combat techniques. If the Rain Terrace Scripture was a copy of the Wind Spirit Scripture, it was a poor one, failing to capture its essence.

However, his foundation in the Rain Terrace Scripture made it easier for him to comprehend the Wind Spirit Scripture, whose cultivation methods were far superior, making his energy circulation faster and more efficient.

But the laws within the Wind Spirit Scripture were more profound, requiring more time to comprehend.

Mingyan immersed himself in cultivation. Three days passed unnoticed.

News of Holy Master Yue Ying accepting a male disciple spread throughout the Wind Spirit Moon Shadow Sacred Land, making many disciples curious about this newcomer who had been taken in as a personal disciple.

This news was also accompanied by the story of his ten-level score on the Wind Spirit Stone.

The Holy Master hadn’t concealed her actions. Many outsiders had been present, and those who weren’t chosen naturally spread the news upon returning. The story of a young Great Brook Realm cultivator being chosen as the Holy Master’s personal disciple quickly spread beyond the Sacred Land.

Mingyan was unaware of this. He was focused on studying the Wind Spirit Scripture, which greatly enhanced his strength. If his base strength was one hundred, the Rain Terrace Scripture could amplify it to one hundred and twenty-five, while the Wind Spirit Scripture could amplify it to two hundred. Its cultivation and combat techniques were exactly what he needed.

Although the Sun and Moon Scripture Huang Feiyan had given him also contained combat techniques, they required the Yin Tomb and Yang Tomb realms. Only the secret technique that could amplify his strength several times over was usable now… but he wouldn’t use it unless absolutely necessary. The potential consequences were too severe. He wouldn’t risk crippling himself just to test it.

He spent his time studying the Wind Spirit Scripture’s cultivation methods and practicing its combat techniques, making significant progress.

This was an Emperor-level scripture, one of the best in the world. Even the holy children and maidens cultivated techniques of similar level.

Yue Qingying returned to the island. She first reported to Yue Wu Xia about the recruitment, then, instead of returning to her room, she went to Mingyan’s cottage.

His window was open, so she could see him cultivating inside.

She had checked on him several times these past few days, always finding him either cultivating or practicing combat techniques, incredibly diligent and focused.

This was common for cultivators in the Spring Opening Realm. Breaking through from Illuminating Sea to Yin Tomb wasn’t simply a matter of accumulating enough energy. It required comprehension, understanding the principles of the Yin Tomb and Yang Tomb realms, how to generate spiritual energy efficiently, and so on. Diligent cultivation alone wasn’t enough.

Yue Qingying smiled faintly and was about to leave when Mingyan suddenly opened his eyes and saw her. He quickly stood up. “Senior Sister.”

“Hmm? Hehe, did I disturb you?” Yue Qingying removed her veil and smiled at him.

“Not at all. Please come in, Senior Sister.” Mingyan opened the door and invited her inside.

Yue Qingying hesitated for a moment, then entered.

“Have you encountered any difficulties in your cultivation recently?” She didn’t sit down. There were no chairs in the room, and sitting on his bed seemed inappropriate.

“Not yet. My cultivation is progressing smoothly.” Mingyan smiled. “The Wind Spirit Scripture is very suitable for me.”

“That’s good. The recruitment is almost over. Master will likely arrange some trials for you soon. Are you prepared?” Yue Qingying smiled. He had initially thought she was cold and aloof, but now, as his senior sister, she seemed quite warm and approachable.

    Indeed, appearances could be deceiving.

“I’ve been preparing these past few days. Although I haven’t reached a breakthrough yet, I’ve solidified my Great Brook Realm cultivation.” Mingyan replied. “And I didn’t learn many combat techniques in Rain Terrace Blessed Land. The Wind Spirit Scripture has helped me greatly in that regard.”

As an Emperor-level scripture, the Wind Spirit Scripture was comprehensive, greatly benefiting Mingyan.

“I don’t know what kind of trials Master will arrange, but they’ll be within your capabilities. I’ve heard some rumors recently. It seems the Huang family is planning a banquet. You just returned from there. Do you know what’s happening?”

Mingyan thought for a moment, then smiled. “Feiyan will likely contact you personally about this soon, Senior Sister. She might be upset if she knew I told you beforehand.”

“You seem quite close to Feiyan.” Yue Qingying was curious. She had sensed Huang Feiyan’s gratitude and concern for Mingyan back at Rain Terrace Blessed Land. Now, it seemed their relationship was quite close.

“Feiyan and I are friends,” Mingyan said slightly awkwardly. “Something happened. She’ll tell you about it eventually.”

“You’re quite discreet.” Yue Qingying chuckled. “But you’ve piqued my curiosity… Forget it, I won’t press you. Feiyan probably asked you to keep it a secret. Here, take this.”

She produced a ginseng-like herb from her Qi Sea. “This is a spirit herb Master gave me. It has powerful healing properties. Master likely won’t give you anything for your trials. You’ll have to rely on yourself. Take this herb with you, just in case.”

“…Senior Sister…” Mingyan was touched. They hadn’t spoken much, yet she was so concerned about him. He felt a warmth in his chest.

“Take it. Master won’t mind.” Seeing his hesitation, she reassured him.

Mingyan accepted the herb, feeling a pang of gratitude. What a wonderful senior sister… “Thank you, Senior Sister…”

“You’re welcome. Master only has two disciples. We’ll need to support each other in the future.” Yue Qingying smiled. “Mutual benefit is the foundation of any relationship.”

Mingyan nodded. “Although I agree with your words, Senior Sister, I know you’re not just doing this for mutual benefit. Thank you.”

Yue Qingying chuckled and shook her head. “Alright, I won’t disturb your cultivation any longer. You need to increase your strength quickly. Your current level is too low and might attract unwanted attention and criticism.”

“I understand,” Mingyan nodded. “I won’t disgrace Master.”

Yue Qingying then turned and left.

    Chapter 44: Senior Sister

The wood Yue Qingying mentioned wasn’t ordinary wood, but a special type grown in the Wind Spirit Moon Shadow Sacred Land called Spirit Gathering Wood. As its name suggested, it could effectively gather surrounding spiritual energy. Living in a house made of this wood would be beneficial even for ordinary people, promoting health and longevity.

For cultivators, increasing the spiritual energy density of their living space was naturally advantageous.

This was especially true for those who hadn’t reached the Transcendence Realm and couldn’t generate their own spiritual energy. The denser the surrounding energy, the faster their progress in the Spring Opening Realm.

Although she had suggested they work together, Yue Qingying didn’t let Mingyan help. She retrieved the Spirit Gathering Wood from her Qi Sea and quickly built a small, aesthetically pleasing cottage.

It wasn’t exactly “built by hand,” as she used her spiritual energy to manipulate the wood. As a Qi Sea Realm cultivator, she had precise control over her energy.

“This should be fine.” She showed no signs of fatigue after completing the cottage. Such a small expenditure of energy was insignificant to her.

“Thank you, Senior Sister,” Mingyan said sincerely.

“You’re welcome. Before accepting you as a disciple, Master only had me. Now, with you as her personal disciple, there are only two of us. We should look after each other.” Yue Qingying smiled gently. “Now, let me explain the situation here in the Wind Spirit Moon Shadow Sacred Land.”

“First, don’t form close relationships with anyone in the Wind Spirit Branch. I’m not sure if Master mentioned this, so I’ll remind you again. I can’t explain the reason yet, but Master will tell you when the time is right. Just remember what I said.” Her voice was gentle, a stark contrast to her initial coldness. Becoming her junior brother had clearly changed her attitude…

Her words surprised Mingyan. Although the Wind Spirit and Moon Shadow Branches were separate, telling him not to form close relationships with anyone in the Wind Spirit Branch seemed excessive…

But he nodded. “I’ll remember that.”

“Good.” Yue Qingying smiled, seeing him agree. “Both the Wind Spirit and Moon Shadow Branches are part of the Wind Spirit Moon Shadow Sacred Land. Your situation is unique. You’re Master’s disciple, and she’s the Headmaster of the Moon Shadow Branch. So, strictly speaking, you don’t belong to either branch.”

“As a male disciple, you’re not allowed to enter the Moon Shadow Courtyard. It’s protected by numerous formations. Without cultivating the Moon Shadow Scripture, entering it would be harmful. Besides, most of the disciples there are accustomed to a life without men and are quite… casual in their attire and speech. So, unless you have Master’s permission or it’s absolutely necessary, you mustn’t enter the Moon Shadow Courtyard. Do you understand?”

“I understand,” Mingyan nodded. He understood such rules.

“That’s enough about rules. Let me tell you about the history of the Wind Spirit Moon Shadow Sacred Land.” Yue Qingying, pleased with his obedience, began her story.

As Mingyan already knew, the Sacred Land was founded by a couple, both incredibly powerful figures of their time: Great Empress Yue Ying and Human King Feng Ling.

One was a Great Emperor, the strongest being in the world, having achieved enlightenment. Her husband, Feng Ling, was also an exceptional genius, a Human King, who could have also become a Great Emperor. However, only one Great Emperor could exist at a time. Upon achieving enlightenment, the Heavenly Dao would suppress other cultivators, preventing them from reaching the same level. Even at the peak of the Human King Realm, he couldn’t become a Great Emperor.

A Human King’s lifespan was only five thousand years, ten thousand with the Immortality Herb.

Great Empress Yue Ying had found several Immortality Herbs but didn’t consume them herself. After ruling the world for ten thousand years with her husband, they both perished, choosing not to live a second life alone. They left behind two Emperor-level scriptures: the Wind Spirit Scripture and the Moon Shadow Scripture. One contained the essence of a Great Emperor’s knowledge, the other the culmination of a Human King’s learning, refined and perfected by the Great Emperor himself, making it comparable to other Emperor-level scriptures, only slightly weaker.

Although the two scriptures complemented each other, they couldn’t be cultivated together. Women could only cultivate the Moon Shadow Scripture, and men could only cultivate the Wind Spirit Scripture. Attempting to cultivate the other would cause severe backlash and lead to Qi Deviation.

However, if cultivated by a couple, they enhanced each other’s progress.

Therefore, historically, the Holy Masters of the two branches were often couples, creating a unique dual-leadership structure. Thanks to this and their special constitutions, the Wind Spirit Moon Shadow Sacred Land had once been the most powerful Sacred Land in the Eastern Continent.

Due to the complementary nature of the scriptures, intermarriage between the branches had been encouraged. The Wind Spirit Holy Son and Moon Shadow Holy Maiden, the Wind Spirit Holy Master and Moon Shadow Holy Master, were often couples, and romantic relationships between disciples of the two branches were common. There were even rumors that the two scriptures were dual cultivation techniques.

This wasn’t true. Although the creators of the scriptures were a couple, the two techniques, while complementary, didn’t contain any dual cultivation methods.

Emperor-level scriptures contained the essence of a Great Emperor’s knowledge. Many such scriptures complemented each other. After all, even a Great Emperor’s knowledge wasn’t all-encompassing. A scripture might excel in one major realm but be ordinary in another. This was common. Just because two scriptures complemented each other didn’t make them dual cultivation techniques.

About five thousand years ago, due to the prevalence of intermarriage between the branches, many disciples mistakenly believed the Wind Spirit and Moon Shadow Scriptures were dual cultivation techniques. Combined with the encouragement of inter-branch relationships, the situation spiraled out of control. What was once encouragement became promiscuity, affecting the entire Sacred Land and even hindering their cultivation. As a result, the Holy Masters of that generation failed to reach the Human Gateway Realm, remaining at half-step Human Gateway.

This weakened the Sacred Land and nearly led to its destruction by those with malicious intent. Fortunately, thanks to its deep foundation, accumulated over hundreds of thousands of years, it survived the attack. Learning from this experience, they separated the two branches completely, forbidding relationships without a genuine emotional foundation, disguised as dual cultivation. This restored order and allowed the Sacred Land to recover.

Since then, although romantic relationships weren’t strictly forbidden, the Holy Masters, to set an example, generally focused on their respective branches, minimizing interaction and avoiding romantic entanglements.

Three generations of Holy Masters had passed since then. Yue Wu Xia was the third.

The Wind Spirit Branch had a unique situation. The first and second generations after the separation had Human Gateway Realm Holy Masters, but the current generation only had Wang Daoming, a half-step Human Gateway cultivator. Wang Daoming and Yue Wu Xia had been the Wind Spirit Holy Son and Moon Shadow Holy Maiden of the previous generation. Wang Daoming had even pursued Yue Wu Xia, but it hadn’t worked out.

As the Holy Son, he often accompanied Yue Wu Xia to various events and competitions, but she always outshone him. Her talent was exceptional, the most outstanding Holy Maiden in hundreds of thousands of years. Wang Daoming, however, was arguably the weakest Holy Son in just as long. He was a mere shadow beside her, but blinded by his affection, he hadn’t cared.

Yue Wu Xia lived up to expectations, reaching the Human Gateway Realm at a young age, becoming the youngest Holy Master in history. At that time, Wang Daoming was only at the Rotating Core Realm. Many years later, he had only reached the peak of Rotating Core, half-step Human Gateway, still unable to break through. Although he became the Headmaster of the Wind Spirit Branch after the previous Headmaster’s death, he wasn’t worthy of the title of Holy Master, not having reached the Human Gateway Realm. He was still technically the Holy Son, but he was also the Headmaster. It was a strange situation. Moreover, although the younger generation of the Wind Spirit Branch had some Qi Sea Realm cultivators, they were all quite old, having reached that realm in their mid-twenties. Their talent was mediocre compared to other Sacred Lands, so the position of Holy Son remained vacant.

“If you can reach the Qi Sea Realm within two years, the position of Holy Son might be yours,” Yue Qingying said, a playful glint in her eyes.

“May I ask a question, Senior Sister?”

    “Go ahead.”

“How long did it take you to reach the Qi Sea Realm from Great Brook?”

“…I reached Great Brook at seven and early Qi Sea at seventeen. It took ten years.”

“…Do you really think I can reach the Qi Sea Realm in two years, Senior Sister?” Mingyan asked after a moment of silence.

“With your talent, and you’re only at Great Brook at sixteen… You haven’t been cultivating for long, have you?”

“Strictly speaking, I only started last year,” Mingyan nodded.

Yue Qingying’s eyes widened slightly in surprise, then she smiled. “I reached Spring Gushing at four and Great Brook at seven. It took you only a year to reach Great Brook from nothing. Reaching Qi Sea from Great Brook in two years isn’t impossible, but you’ll need a great opportunity.”

“You seem very confident in me, Senior Sister.” Mingyan knew he was talented, but he didn’t fully understand his own potential.

“For Master to make an exception and accept you as her disciple, your future must be extraordinary.” Yue Qingying nodded. “You’ll likely surpass even me…”

Mingyan was slightly confused. Perhaps he should ask his master about his constitution. Not knowing his own potential could lead to miscalculations. His eyes hardened with resolve. “Regardless, I’ll do my best.”

Even if he couldn’t reach the Qi Sea Realm in two years, he would strive to improve as much as possible. He had to attend the Peach Banquet at Yaochi in a year and a half.

“That’s enough.” Yue Qingying smiled and nodded. “If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. I’ll do my best to answer them.”

“You must have other matters to attend to, Senior Sister. I’ve learned enough for now. Please, go ahead. I won’t keep you any longer.”

“Do you have no more questions?”

    Mingyan nodded.

“Then I’ll attend to my tasks. Master will likely arrange some trials for you soon. I hope you’ll pass them. Farewell.” Yue Qingying nodded, tapped her foot gently, and vanished in a flash of light.

    Chapter 43: Master and Disciple

Unaware of the other disciples’ reactions, Mingyan was carried by a mysterious force, following Holy Master Yue Wu Xia to a secluded island, where they landed.

As the energy surrounding him dissipated, a captivating fragrance enveloped him, nearly intoxicating him. He steadied his mind and noticed the island was covered in spirit herbs and medicinal plants, their forms graceful and alluring. As if sensing his gaze, the plants suddenly retreated into the ground. Mingyan was surprised. Had they developed sentience?

He had heard that spirit herbs of a certain level, or those that had grown for many years, could develop sentience. They would become shy, elusive, and even choose a master. Once they chose a master, they wouldn’t resist being used for alchemy, but capturing them would become incredibly difficult for others.

These herbs must belong to Yue Wu Xia, having already chosen her as their master.

She turned to face him, her figure hazy and indistinct. “When we first met, I didn’t sense anything special about you. Only today do I see your uniqueness. I’ve been observing you since you arrived at the Sacred Land. Huang Junru sent me a letter, informing me of your exceptional talent. However, due to the Huang family’s unique circumstances, they couldn’t accept you and recommended you to me instead.”

“Huang Junru and I are friends, but I also wanted to confirm your talent myself. Otherwise, I would have sent you to a more suitable place. I’ve been considering accepting you as my disciple since you passed the first test. I only appeared just now because I had finally made up my mind. I know you’re intelligent and likely guessed I was observing you, and might resent me for it, so I wanted to be clear.”

Previously, surrounded by so many people, Mingyan had been preoccupied with his own decision and hadn’t noticed much else. Now, alone with Yue Wu Xia, he found her voice incredibly pleasant, like a celestial melody, her cold tone carrying an air of calmness and nobility.

Mingyan was silent for a moment, then knelt down on one knee. “Disciple harbors no such resentment.”

“Whether you do or not, we both know. But I don’t want any lingering resentment between us.” Yue Wu Xia said calmly, “From now on, we are master and disciple. We must be united. You will respect and honor me, and I will teach and guide you.”

“Disciple obeys,” Mingyan said, lowering his head.

“You are my second disciple and my personal disciple. You shouldn’t address yourself as ‘Disciple’.” Yue Wu Xia turned her back to him.

Her figure was blurry, hidden in the mist, despite being only a few steps away, like the moon veiled by clouds, mysterious and aloof.

    “This disciple… obeys?”

Yue Wu Xia was silent for a moment, then turned around. “You had another master at Rain Terrace Blessed Land?”

“Before coming to the Wind Spirit Moon Shadow Sacred Land, my previous master declared me to have completed my training under him. So, strictly speaking, I no longer have a master,” Mingyan replied softly, still kneeling.

“Good. From now on, I am your only master. Perform the discipleship ceremony.”

Mingyan nodded, checked his attire, and, finding nothing amiss, crossed his hands over his chest. “From this day forward, I, Mingyan, become the disciple of Master Yue Wu Xia. I will respect and honor you. A teacher for a day, a father for life…”

When he became Liu Yunfeng’s disciple, since Liu Yunfeng was male, he had said “a father for life.” It had seemed appropriate then, but with Yue Wu Xia, it felt slightly awkward.

Although the phrase didn’t literally mean the master was now his father, but rather a figure deserving of paternal respect, it still felt strange…

Yue Wu Xia didn’t react, simply observing him silently.

“A teacher for a day, a mother for life,” Mingyan corrected himself, seeing her silence. He didn’t hear any reaction from her and sighed in relief.

He then placed his hands on the ground and kowtowed three times, then looked up at her. “Master.”

Yue Wu Xia took two steps forward, her jade-like hand emerging from the mist, her skin as pale and flawless as moonlight. She placed a finger on his forehead. “From this day forward, I, Yue Wu Xia, become the master of Mingyan. I will guide and protect him on his cultivation journey. May our ancestors bear witness.”

A cool sensation spread from his forehead, and Mingyan felt a jolt as profound and arcane scriptures flooded his mind. He had never seen them before, yet they felt strangely familiar, like forgotten memories resurfacing.

“I’ve imparted the Wind Spirit Scripture and the Moon Shadow Scripture to you. Cultivate the Wind Spirit Scripture. The Moon Shadow Scripture is a female cultivation technique. Cultivating it as a man would be detrimental. I’ve given it to you for reference.” Yue Wu Xia withdrew her finger, her figure becoming hazy again. “I expect you to comprehend them on your own. If you have any questions, you may ask me.”

“Also, these scriptures are not to be shared with outsiders. I’ve placed a restriction in your mind. You won’t be able to write down or explain their contents. If anyone attempts to forcefully search your soul, they will suffer severe backlash. It won’t be pleasant for you either. Your senior sister will explain the details later. Rise. The ceremony is complete. You don’t need to kneel before me in the future. A simple bow will suffice.” Her voice was cold and indifferent. She then turned and entered the house in the center of the island, closing the door behind her.

Mingyan stood up. Senior sister? Did she mean Yue Qingying?

He looked around but didn’t see anyone else. He then began examining the island.

It seemed to be located at the highest point above the mountains, overlooking the entire Wind Spirit Moon Shadow Sacred Land. From the edge of the island, he could clearly see the two branches: the Wind Spirit Courtyard, shrouded in mist and occasionally emitting a pale green glow, and the Moon Shadow Courtyard, shimmering like a mirage, bathed in a faint moonlight. The entire Sacred Land seemed hazy and indistinct from afar, likely adding to its mystique.

Even Huang Feiyan and Huang Junyi had mentioned its unique nature.

The island wasn’t large. There were only two houses: the one Yue Wu Xia had just entered, presumably her residence, and a smaller one beside it, likely belonging to his senior sister, Yue Qingying.

He didn’t seem to have a place to stay… He couldn’t share a room with his senior sister, could he? Although cultivators didn’t need to sleep, and the spiritual energy here was incredibly dense, making meditating on the ground a viable option, he still preferred some privacy.

Just then, he saw a hazy figure approaching the island. He looked closely and recognized Yue Qingying. She wore her usual elegant white dress, her aura ethereal, like a celestial maiden from the moon palace. She landed on the island, looked at him with a slightly strange expression, and although her figure was also somewhat blurry, likely due to the difference in their cultivation levels, he could clearly see her face, partially hidden by a veil.

    “Senior Sister,” Mingyan bowed respectfully.

Yue Qingying nodded, sighing softly. “When we first met, I wondered why Feiyan valued you so highly. I didn’t expect you to become my junior brother so soon… We’re quite fated.”

She hadn’t been at the Sacred Land. Holy Master Yue Wu Xia had sent her to observe the female applicants and had only just recalled her. She had just learned that Yue Wu Xia had accepted Mingyan as a disciple, making him her junior brother.

    “Indeed…”

Yue Qingying hesitated for a moment, then removed her veil. “Since we’re now senior and junior siblings, I shouldn’t hide my face from you. My name is Yue Qingying. Like Master, my surname is Yue. Master also gave me my name, Qingying, which also relates to moonlight. From now on, we’re senior and junior siblings. We should look after each other.”

With her veil removed, Mingyan could finally see her full face.

He had assumed she was beautiful, judging by her voice and the visible parts of her face, but he had underestimated her. Her features were exquisite: a delicate nose, rosy cheeks, and full, red lips. She resembled the breathtakingly beautiful celestial maidens he had seen in the ancient texts from his village, her gaze cool yet captivating. Birds of a feather flocked together, indeed. Were all of Feiyan’s friends this beautiful?

Mingyan quickly looked away. Huang Junyi’s “torment” had significantly improved his self-control. Staring was rude, even though Yue Qingying was undeniably attractive.

He wondered… Although he had feelings for Ning Feixuan, in terms of appearance, both Huang Feiyan and Yue Qingying were comparable, perhaps even more beautiful. Why was Ning Feixuan considered the most beautiful woman in the Eastern Continent?

“My name is Mingyan. Ming as in ‘bright,’ and Yan as in ‘flowing water’,” he said. “I’ll be in your care, Senior Sister…”

Yue Qingying smiled faintly and put her veil back on. “Master asked me to explain the situation here in the Wind Spirit Moon Shadow Sacred Land, but I think arranging your accommodations is more important. On this island, besides Master’s residence, there’s only my room. Although we’re now senior and junior siblings, it’s not appropriate for us to share a room. I’ve prepared some materials before returning. Let’s build you a room first.”

    Chapter 42: Taking a Master

The distraught boy was quickly escorted away, and the test continued.

The white-haired elder returned with another young cultivator, the one who had been shocked by Mingyan’s speed earlier. He frowned, seeing he was now behind Mingyan in line.

As more cultivators tested their aptitude, the results quickly became apparent. Of the dozens ahead of Mingyan, five had been eliminated, half with scores around five levels and the other half with six. No one else had achieved seven levels…

The elders above looked disappointed, clearly dissatisfied with the quality of this batch of recruits.

Those with five or six levels wouldn’t be chosen by the elders and would become ordinary disciples of the Wind Spirit Branch.

After over an hour, it was finally Mingyan’s turn.

“A sixteen-year-old at the Great Brook Realm? He’s probably going to set a new record for the lowest score today.” Disciple Zhang sneered, still not expecting much from Mingyan.

The young man behind Mingyan rolled his eyes. He had thought the same, but then he had witnessed Mingyan’s incredible speed during the first test. This would likely shock everyone.

The lowest score so far was three. Those who passed the first test generally had decent talent. It was rare for someone to score only two levels on the second test.

But Mingyan’s situation was unique. He was the oldest among the new disciples. Those of similar age had been eliminated in the first test… Those who remained were mostly under thirteen, some even younger, like the boy the elders had fought over, who looked to be only seven or eight.

“Since he passed the first test, he should at least get three levels. I don’t think he’ll break the record.” Another disciple beside Zhang shook his head. “Besides, we might be mistaken. Doesn’t this happen every year? We underestimate a disciple, and they turn out to be incredibly talented…”

“I won’t lose anything either way. I’ve been wanting to confess to Senior Brother Le.” Zhang snorted.

“…” The other disciple subtly distanced himself from Zhang.

Mingyan, unfazed, placed his hand on the Wind Spirit Stone.

The elders above looked disappointed, seeing his age and cultivation level. One of them sighed. “What’s wrong this year? Why are the recruits so weak? I heard the Moon Shadow Branch has many talented new disciples, many with seven levels, and even a few with eight… Although no one reached the Holy Maiden’s ten levels, it’s still quite good…”

“Indeed. At this rate… how can we compete with the Moon Shadow Branch…”

“Careful!” Another elder warned, glancing at him. “Besides, what’s the rush? I think this young man is special. I heard from the guards at the front gate that he ascended the mountain effortlessly during the first test. Perhaps his talent is beyond our expectations.”

    “…Is that true?”

    “We’ll see.”

The Wind Spirit Stone felt strange to the touch, like… the sensation of wind against one’s palm when moving at high speed…

A disciple beside him instructed, “Circulate your spiritual energy as fast as you can. The Wind Spirit Stone can sense it. Begin.”

Mingyan nodded, closed his eyes, and circulated his energy.

His natural spirit channels, a unique aspect of his constitution, allowed for exceptionally fast energy circulation, unlike others who had to create their own channels. The Wind Spirit Stone quickly reacted, vibrating slightly.

The first level lit up, followed by the second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth…

Before anyone could react, the glow jumped to the eighth level and continued rising, reaching the tenth level without stopping.

The stone radiated a brilliant light that enveloped Mingyan, reaching towards the sky!

“Ten levels?!” The previously disappointed elder’s eyes widened. “It’s actually ten levels?!”

“Excellent! It’s been so long since the Wind Spirit Branch has seen a ten-level talent!” The balding elder was also excited. “I must personally guide this disciple.”

“Don’t let him die under your tutelage.” Lin Zhongdao glared at him and snorted. “Let Wang Daoming teach him.”

Hearing this name, the balding elder fell silent. After a moment, he said, “The Headmaster is likely observing this as well. He should be arriving soon.”

The young cultivator behind Mingyan rolled his eyes. He had known this wasn’t an ordinary person. Damn, not normal at all. Even if he achieved eight or nine levels, no one would remember him now… How unlucky…

Disciple Zhang was also shocked. “I didn’t expect him to actually get ten levels… Hmph, well, at least I have a legitimate reason to confess to Senior Brother Le now.”

“…” The disciple who had distanced himself from Zhang was also stunned, then looked at him, speechless. “Senior Brother Zhang, do you understand what ten levels means? It means he’s far more talented than Senior Brother Le… He’s on the same level as the Holy Maiden…”

“This test doesn’t represent everything. Besides, even if he’s more talented than Senior Brother Le, so what?” Zhang shook his head. Although surprised, he wasn’t swayed.

“How many ten-level talents have there been in history? Were any of them weaklings?” another disciple said. “The Headmaster will probably come to accept him as a personal disciple… If nurtured properly, he might become the Wind Spirit Holy Son, a position that has been vacant for centuries…”

“The Wind Spirit Holy Son can only be Senior Brother Le. Although he only has eight levels, even the Holy Maiden praised his talent.” Zhang glared at him. “This guy is only at the Great Brook Realm. Senior Brother Le is already at the early Qi Sea Realm, only slightly weaker than the Holy Maiden. It will take him years to catch up to Senior Brother Le.”

“But Senior Brother Le isn’t young anymore… He’s already twenty-four or twenty-five… The Holy Maiden is only eighteen…”

“Do you think this guy can reach the Qi Sea Realm in two years?” Zhang snorted.

Mingyan opened his eyes, looking at the brilliant light reaching towards the sky, also surprised. He had thought eight levels would be sufficient, but he had achieved ten.

He looked up at the elders, puzzled. Why weren’t they reacting? Why weren’t they trying to recruit him?

He removed his hand from the stone, looking around, but found nothing unusual. Strange… What was going on? Wasn’t ten levels the highest possible score?

“You’ve passed the test. Please wait here.” The disciple who had been surprised by his score approached him, smiling. “Elder Lin just informed me that the Headmaster is interested in accepting you as a personal disciple. Someone will be here to escort you shortly. Please wait a moment.”

Mingyan finally understood. It wasn’t that the elders weren’t interested, but that the Headmaster, who was above them, had taken notice of him. He nodded and stepped aside to wait.

He was now the center of attention. Almost everyone was staring at him. What did ten levels mean?

Historically, those who achieved ten levels often became the Holy Son or Holy Maiden of their respective branches, eventually becoming the Headmaster. But the Wind Spirit Branch hadn’t seen a ten-level talent in a long time. Even the current Headmaster, Wang Daoming, had only achieved nine levels when he joined.

Although the results of the Wind Spirit Stone and Moon Shadow Stone tests didn’t fully represent a cultivator’s overall talent, geniuses generally had excellent physiques, which enhanced their potential.

This meant the Wind Spirit Branch might finally have a Holy Son again…

The elders looked at Mingyan with fervent gazes, while the other disciples looked on with envy. Such talent meant he would receive abundant resources and training… Who wouldn’t want to be the Headmaster’s personal disciple? With the Headmaster’s guidance, their progress would be incredibly fast.

A figure appeared silently behind the elders.

    “Headmaster!”

A disciple noticed him and immediately knelt down, and the others followed suit, bowing respectfully. “Headmaster!”

Mingyan looked at the man called Headmaster. He appeared relatively young, dressed in green, his demeanor dignified and charismatic. He smiled and waved his hand. “Rise.”

He then appeared before Mingyan, his smile gentle. “You’re the one who achieved ten levels, right? My name is Wang Daoming, Headmaster of the Wind Spirit Branch. Would you be willing to become my disciple?”

“The Headmaster himself… He truly values this ten-level talent.” A disciple exclaimed.

“Ten levels… even the Holy Maiden only has ten levels… The Wind Spirit Branch can finally hold its head high. We’re always being compared unfavorably to the women… His cultivation level is a bit low, but given time, he’ll catch up.”

Wang Daoming reminded Mingyan of Xia Yanming. They both seemed gentle and kind. He had a good first impression of the Headmaster. He cupped his hands respectfully. “Disciple…”

Just as he was about to speak, a hazy figure appeared, making Wang Daoming frown. He gestured for Mingyan to stop and looked surprised, while the elders above landed and knelt down. “Holy Master!”

The disciples, who had just risen, knelt down again. “Holy Master!”

Wang Daoming also bowed. “Holy Master… to what do we owe this honor?”

Holy Master? Mingyan looked at the hazy figure and realized it was Holy Master Yue Ying, whom he had met several times but never seen clearly. Why was she here?

She didn’t speak but sent a letter flying towards Wang Daoming, her voice cold and indifferent. “Family Head Huang Junru entrusted me with this child’s care. I intend to accept him as a personal disciple. He will also cultivate the Wind Spirit Scripture. Although I haven’t cultivated it myself, I’ve thoroughly studied it and am capable of guiding him.”

“What is the meaning of this?” Wang Daoming accepted the letter but didn’t open it, his brow furrowed. “You’re the Headmaster of the Moon Shadow Branch. How can you accept a male disciple? There’s no precedent for this.”

“I’ll set the precedent today.” Holy Master Yue Ying said calmly. “My decision is final. Or do you think you’re a better teacher than me?”

Wang Daoming lowered his head. “I wouldn’t dare… But the division of the branches was established by our ancestors. Please reconsider accepting a male disciple, Holy Master.”

Mingyan remained silent, observing the situation. He had thought becoming the Headmaster’s disciple was a great honor, but now, the Holy Master wanted him as her disciple?

He was talented, but her current disciple, Yue Qingying, was also exceptional. Why would she make an exception for him?

“I said, my decision is final. There’s nothing to reconsider.”

“…Let him decide, Holy Master,” Wang Daoming said after a moment of silence.

“Mingyan, what is your decision?” Holy Master Yue Ying looked at him, her voice slightly cold. Mingyan pondered.

She hadn’t accepted him immediately after receiving Huang Junru’s letter, unlike what the Huang family had said. She must have wanted to assess his talent first. Now that he had proven himself, she was using the letter to claim him… This made him hesitate.

He couldn’t say she was wrong, but it did lower his opinion of her slightly.

He didn’t know Wang Daoming, but Holy Master Yue Ying seemed to have a good relationship with the Huang family… He was now on good terms with the Huang family, so becoming her disciple seemed advantageous. However, as the Headmaster of the Moon Shadow Branch, she shouldn’t be accepting male disciples. Becoming her disciple would make him stand out… Would that attract unwanted attention…?

But it would also make Ning Feixuan notice him. Mingyan made his decision.

He knelt before Holy Master Yue Ying. “Disciple is willing to become your disciple…”

Wang Daoming’s face darkened. He returned the letter to the Holy Master, glared at Mingyan, and left.

Mingyan knew he had likely offended Wang Daoming, but choosing him would have offended the Holy Master. Wang Daoming, by giving him the choice, had created this situation.

Compared to Wang Daoming, Holy Master Yue Ying was more powerful and influential. Becoming her disciple was the better choice…

“Good. From now on, you’re my disciple. Call me Master.” Holy Master Yue Ying, whose real name was Yue Wu Xia, nodded slightly and, with a wave of her hand, lifted him into the air. She then tapped her foot gently and flew away with him.

The other disciples looked at each other, bewildered…

Chapter 41: The Competition Heats Up

Upon reaching the summit, the intense pressure vanished, and Mingyan felt lighter. He attributed this to the contrast with the previous pressure, unaware of the subtle changes occurring within his body.

He followed the male cultivator’s directions and reached the edge of a cliff, where a rope bridge, secured by four thick chains and with wooden planks as its walkway, stretched across the chasm. A strong wind howled, but the bridge remained motionless, as if anchored in place.

On the other side, Mingyan saw a plaque bearing the characters “Wind Spirit,” shimmering with light.

He stepped onto the bridge and looked down.

The climb had been surprisingly easy, and only now did he realize the summit’s height. The bottom of the chasm was shrouded in mist, creating a sense of mystery.

Mingyan crossed the bridge and reached the plaque.

Two young disciples stood guard. They nodded at him, allowing him to enter the courtyard without a word.

He stepped into the Wind Spirit Courtyard.

Passing the plaque, he felt like he had entered a different world. The dense spiritual energy was invigorating, far surpassing that of the Huang family’s outer courtyard. Even breathing felt easier here. For cultivators, spiritual energy was as essential as air. The purer and denser it was, the more beneficial.

Mingyan thought that if he had started cultivating here, he would have reached a much higher level by now.

At least within the Spring Opening Realm, where quantity led to quality, he would have progressed much faster.

But why was the difference in energy density so stark between the inside and outside of the courtyard? Was there a formation trapping the energy within?

Xia Yanming had used the formation left by their Rotating Core Realm ancestor to stall his enemies. Formations were truly powerful… Perhaps he should learn more about them.

He could have mentioned Huang Junru’s letter to Holy Master Yue Ying, but he hadn’t. He was curious about his own talent and believed the Holy Master would be informed of his arrival. Perhaps she wanted to assess his talent before making a decision.

He looked around but didn’t see any other disciples. Shortly after, a white-haired elder flew down and landed before him, his expression serious. “Are you the one who passed the first test?”

Mingyan nodded. “I’m here for the second test.”

“Follow me.” The elder grabbed him by the collar and lifted him into the air… Mingyan was slightly surprised by this rough method of transportation…

As they flew deeper into the Wind Spirit Courtyard, Mingyan saw more and more disciples. The lowest cultivation level he saw was his own, and most were imperceptible, meaning they were stronger than him…

As expected, a Sacred Land was filled with talented individuals… Even if he was talented, he couldn’t neglect hard work. He had to excel to achieve anything here.

Huang Feiyan had mentioned the Peach Banquet at Yaochi Sacred Land in a year and a half. The Wind Spirit Moon Shadow Sacred Land would surely attend, but the number of participants would be limited. Mingyan had to secure a spot, not just to reunite with Huang Feiyan and Huang Junyi, but also to get closer to Ning Feixuan.

The elder landed with him in a plaza where many people were gathered. A beautiful, pale blue jade stone stood in the center.

“Stand in line here. The second test is simple. When it’s your turn, place your hand on the jade stone. It contains a special formation that will assess your cultivation talent based on your spiritual energy absorption and circulation speed. This complements the first test. The stone will glow, with ten levels of brightness. The brighter the glow, the better your adaptability to spiritual energy and the more suitable your physique is for cultivation.”

Mingyan nodded, and the elder continued, “However, this only tests your physical adaptability, not your overall cultivation talent. So, even if you achieve a high score, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re a genius. Don’t become arrogant. Conversely, even if your score is low, don’t be discouraged. Perhaps your talent in other areas can compensate for your physical limitations… Of course, if your physique is too weak, you won’t pass the test. The consequences of that should be obvious.”

Mingyan cupped his hands respectfully. “Thank you for the reminder.”

The elder nodded and flew away.

Mingyan’s arrival didn’t attract much attention. Everyone had been brought here by the elder in the same manner.

    He joined the line.

There were so many people ahead of him. They must have arrived earlier. So many people wanted to join the Wind Spirit Moon Shadow Sacred Land…

    The competition was fierce.

He counted about forty or fifty cultivators ahead of him, most younger than him, some even appearing to be only seven or eight years old. Their cultivation levels were no lower than his. In terms of age and cultivation, he might be the weakest among them.

Above the jade stone, known as the Wind Spirit Stone, several elderly cultivators levitated, observing the applicants below. Mingyan assumed they were elders of the Sacred Land…

Many disciples in uniform, green with the characters “Wind Spirit” embroidered on their chests, were also present, likely from the Wind Spirit Branch, here to watch. They were whispering amongst themselves.

“There don’t seem to be any exceptionally talented disciples today. Eh? Why is there a Great Brook Realm cultivator so old?” One disciple noticed Mingyan, his tone dismissive.

“Passing the first test isn’t easy. Don’t underestimate him. He might achieve a ten-level glow on the Wind Spirit Stone and turn out to be a hidden genius. Wouldn’t you be embarrassed then?”

“Hmph, if he gets ten levels, I’ll confess my feelings to Senior Brother Le.”

    “…Do you have… unusual preferences?”

Mingyan, with his sharp hearing, had initially been unfazed by their dismissive comments, but their conversation took a strange turn. Confessing to a senior brother… There were so many strange people in the outside world. It was unsettling.

He looked towards the front of the line. A seven-year-old boy placed his hand on the Wind Spirit Stone.

The stone had ten distinct levels, clearly marked…

It didn’t react immediately, but after a moment, it began to glow from the bottom.

The first level lit up, a faint blue glow.

Then the second, third, and fourth.

The blue light intensified, illuminating the area around the stone, giving the boy a divine aura. He kept his eyes closed. The glow reached the fourth level, then slowed down, reaching the fifth… sixth… and finally, barely reaching the seventh level.

“Seven levels?!” A disciple exclaimed in surprise. “Even Senior Brother Le only achieved eight levels…”

“It’s just seven levels. Nothing to be surprised about. It’s a far cry from eight levels. Besides, a suitable physique doesn’t guarantee he’s a genius.” The disciple who had sneered at Mingyan earlier snorted.

“Senior Brother Zhang… You also achieved seven levels, so of course you’re not surprised… But most disciples can’t reach this level…”

The boy opened his eyes, relieved and smiling, seeing the seven-level glow.

Several elders descended from the sky, eager to recruit him.

“Lin Zhongdao! How many disciples have you taken in already? I haven’t accepted any new disciples in years, and you’re still competing with me?!” A middle-aged, balding cultivator glared at an elderly-looking elder, his voice filled with annoyance.

“Hmph… This child will achieve greatness under my guidance. Following you? He’ll starve to death! You abandoned your disciple in the Savage Forest for a trial a hundred years ago, and he disappeared. Everyone panicked and left your tutelage. Do you really think anyone likes your hands-off approach?”

“The Holy Master also trains the Holy Maiden this way. Why can’t I?”

“Do you think everyone has the Holy Maiden’s talent and intelligence?” Lin Zhongdao snorted, unfazed by the mention of Holy Master Yue Ying.

“Although Brother Zhen’s methods are questionable, Elder Lin, you’ve already accepted seven or eight disciples these past few years. You shouldn’t be competing with us.” Another, younger-looking elder spoke up.

“…Hmph.” Lin Zhongdao waved his hand dismissively and left. The boy seemed to have chosen the younger elder and was led away.

Seeing the elders competing for disciples, the other applicants became excited, hoping to attract their attention as well.

The next person stepped forward for the test.

He looked to be about twelve years old, his cultivation level similar to Mingyan’s. He placed his hand on the Wind Spirit Stone, and it began to glow. One… two… three… The glow stopped at the third level.

The elders’ expressions remained neutral. The boy opened his eyes, his face falling when he saw the three-level glow. No one offered to take him in. A disciple approached and spoke to him, and the boy burst into tears.

It was understandable for a young boy to be so distraught… Mingyan overheard the disciple telling him that the minimum requirement was four levels. Those who didn’t reach it were considered unqualified and wouldn’t be accepted.

Mingyan’s eyes flickered. So, four levels was the minimum, five was average, six was good, seven was enough to attract the elders’ attention, eight would be highly valued, and anything above that would likely cause a sensation.
