Chapter 91
A few days later, Song Ling’s assistant delivered a file containing information about the car owner. Song Ling glanced at the document, her brow furrowing as she saw the name: Xu Dao. She locked the file in her drawer and looked at her assistant.
“Are you sure that car belongs to her?”
“Yes, Ms. Song. I obtained this information from the police.”
“Do one more thing for me. Have someone follow her and gather all her personal information, no matter how insignificant it seems. I want to know everything about her.”
“Yes, Ms. Song. I’ll get right on it.”
“Xu Dao, why did you try to kill me? What are you planning?” Song Ling wondered.
Upon returning home, she was about to tell Li Xinjun about Xu Dao when she saw Xu Dao and Li Xinjun chatting in her living room.
Xu Dao’s face turned pale as she saw Song Ling enter. She froze, staring at her in disbelief. Song Ling smirked, her smile cold, and then walked over to Li Xinjun, kissing her on the cheek.
Li Xinjun turned and kissed Song Ling on the lips. Xu Dao’s face flushed red with anger, her eyes filled with murderous intent.
Song Ling sat down beside Li Xinjun, her arm around her waist, pulling her closer. She smiled at Xu Dao.
“Director Xu, what brings you to our humble abode?”
“I know Mo Mo is still upset about Qiqi, so I came to keep her company. I didn’t expect to see you here, Ms. Song.”
“What are you talking about? This is my home. Where else would I be?”
“Your home? Mo Mo, why didn’t you tell me you didn’t have a place to stay? You could have stayed with me. You don’t have to impose on Ms. Song.”
“Xu Jie, Song Ling and I are lovers. It’s normal for us to live together. You don’t have to worry.”
“But I thought you and Fan Weiqi…”
“Sigh… There’s no point in hiding it anymore. Qiqi was just pretending to be my girlfriend to help me out. It’s just unfortunate that she’s no longer with us.”
“So there was nothing going on between you two? I thought you…”
“Xu Jie, I’ve explained this to you countless times, but you wouldn’t listen. You don’t have to go out of your way to keep me company. Song Ling is here with me. That’s enough.”
“… So you’ve been with Ms. Song this whole time?”
“Yes, we’ve been together for a long time.”
“Hehe, I had no idea. I’m sorry to have intruded. I think I should be going now.”
“Xu Jie, are you alright?”
Li Xinjun was concerned by Xu Dao’s dejected demeanor, but Xu Dao didn’t reply. She simply turned and walked out of the house, her head held high.
“Jun’er, what do you think of Xu Dao?” Song Ling asked, her voice casual, but her eyes sharp.
“She’s not a bad person, but she’s a bit strange. And she’s very possessive when it comes to love. It’s suffocating. That’s why I distanced myself from her.”
“Did she do anything to you?”
“Not really. She just followed me everywhere, no matter where I went. It was very annoying. I rejected her many times, but she didn’t seem to understand. It wasn’t until Qiqi, seeing my predicament, pretended to be my girlfriend that Xu Jie finally backed off.”
“So Xu Dao thought you and Weiqi were a couple?”
“Yes. Why are you so interested in Xu Jie? Hehe, are you jealous again? Don’t worry, there’s nothing between us. And I don’t like her personality. You can rest assured.”
Li Xinjun climbed onto Song Ling’s lap, wrapping her arms around her neck, forcing her to look at her. Song Ling couldn’t help but smile and kissed her on the lips.
“Stop fooling around. I’m serious. I need to know more about Xu Dao.”
“Why?”
“I suspect she was the one who tried to kill me.”
Li Xinjun frowned, releasing Song Ling’s neck and looking at her seriously. Seeing that Song Ling wasn’t joking, she got off her lap and sat down beside her.
“Did you find something?”
“Yes, my assistant traced the car to Xu Dao. I have reason to believe she’s trying to harm me.”
“But why would she do that? You haven’t had much interaction with her, have you?”
“I don’t know, but based on her behavior just now, and what you told me about her, I have a theory.”
“What is it?”
“I think she’s acting out of jealousy and hatred. That’s why she tried to kill me. And I even suspect that she might be responsible for Weiqi’s accident.”
“What?! You think Xu Jie killed Qiqi?!”
“I’m not sure yet. I’m just speculating.”
Li Xinjun’s eyes flashed green with rage. She clenched her fists, her aura surging, shattering a nearby glass.
“If she’s the one who did this, I’ll make her pay! She’ll suffer a fate worse than death!”
Song Ling, seeing her fury, pulled her into her arms, holding her tight, her hand stroking her back, calming her down.
“Don’t worry. I’ll investigate this thoroughly. Stay out of it. Leave it to me.”
“Sister Ling, if you find out that Xu Jie was responsible, you have to tell me! I want to avenge Qiqi myself!”
“Okay, I promise. If it was her, I’ll let you deal with her.”
From that day on, Song Ling had Xu Dao followed day and night. She also had her team investigate Xu Dao’s past, uncovering a disturbing pattern. Years ago, Xu Dao had lived in the United States, where she had been in a relationship with a woman.
Their relationship had soured, and a third party had entered the picture, leading to constant arguments and a bitter breakup. Shortly after their separation, Xu Dao’s ex-girlfriend and the other woman had died in a car accident. The police investigation had revealed that the car’s brakes had been tampered with, and suspicion had fallen on Xu Dao, who was believed to be acting out of jealousy and rage. However, due to lack of evidence, the case had been closed.
Xu Dao had then left the United States and returned to China, where she had built a successful career as a film director. She had then met Li Mo and had become fixated on her.
Song Ling, studying Xu Dao’s past, grew increasingly suspicious. She contacted Director Wang, asking him to take her back to the film set. She explained her suspicions to him, asking for his help in reopening the investigation into Fan Weiqi’s death.
Director Wang readily agreed. He had worked with Fan Weiqi on several films and considered her a close friend. He didn’t want her death to remain an unsolved mystery. If it wasn’t an accident, he wanted to find the truth and bring the perpetrator to justice.
They returned to the film set, where the police had conducted their investigation. The police had concluded that the explosion was caused by an excessive amount of explosives, but they hadn’t found any evidence of foul play. The special effects team had been cleared of any wrongdoing, and the case had been ruled an accident.
Director Wang took Song Ling to the site of the explosion and explained the sequence of events and the safety precautions they had taken. Song Ling examined the safe zone Director Wang had indicated and then asked him about the special effects team members. On the surface, there was nothing suspicious.
The only thing that puzzled Song Ling was why the explosion had been so much more powerful than expected, exceeding the safe zone.
“Director Wang, did you see anyone else on set that day? Specifically, Xu Dao?”
“There are always people coming and going on a film set. I can’t keep track of everyone. But I do remember Xu Dao being there that day. Why do you ask?”
“I had an accident recently, and I discovered that Xu Dao was behind it. I had my team investigate her, and I found out that her ex-girlfriend’s death was suspicious. I suspect that Fan Weiqi’s death might also be related to her.”
“You’re saying Xu Dao might be a serial killer?”
“Not necessarily a serial killer, but definitely someone who’s capable of killing out of jealousy and rage.”
“If she’s the one who killed Qiqi, I won’t let her get away with it! Bam!” Director Wang punched a nearby wooden crate, his anger palpable.
