Chapter 225: Captured
“Your Holiness, your expression seems rather complex. Do you have anything to say, after betraying our contract?” Kailun waved to the Pope, the unconscious Charles lying a short distance behind him.
Helena had successfully drawn the Temple’s attention, weakening their defenses.
Interestingly, he had run into Paul as soon as he arrived and even given him a little “surprise.”
He had already received Paul’s goodwill feedback and was quite pleased. Such self-aware “leeks” were rare.
“I haven’t betrayed our contract. These were their own actions. If I were involved, wouldn’t I be suffering the consequences of the contract right now?”
The Pope answered Kailun’s question while slowly backing away, moving closer to Helena.
She saw both breaking through and taking Helena hostage as viable options.
During their previous clash, Helena had been injured and was now at less than half her strength, making her the best target.
As for why she wasn’t directly confronting Kailun?
She already had the answer after seeing Afra standing beside him. She finally understood how Kailun had broken through her carefully laid plans.
Kailun didn’t seem that strong, only around seventh or eighth rank. However, Afra was terrifyingly powerful. It wasn’t an exaggeration to say that even two of her wouldn’t be a match for Afra.
Faced with such a formidable opponent, her instincts screamed at her to retreat and avoid confrontation.
“It seems Your Holiness isn’t willing to admit your betrayal. But it doesn’t matter. I’m here to fulfill the contract and become the acting Pope. You can disagree, but it won’t change anything, right?” Kailun took a step forward.
This seemingly ordinary step put the Pope on high alert. She instantly appeared beside Helena, grabbing her by the neck. “Take another step, and I’ll crush her!”
The white light enveloping the Pope flickered unsteadily.
Helena, now a hostage, chuckled. She sensed the Pope’s nervousness, her grip tightening around her neck.
‘So even the Pope is just an ordinary person who fears death.’
She tried to speak, to tell Kailun to leave her be, but no sound came out. The Pope’s hand was choking her voice.
Seeing this, Kailun didn’t rush to rescue Helena. With his current strength, even if her neck was crushed, he could revive her.
Even if she died, he could bring her back to life, but only within a short time frame.
Thinking this way, Kailun calmly walked towards the Pope. “Your Holiness, there’s no need to be so dishonorable. Taking my subordinate hostage won’t change the situation. How about we exchange hostages? I’ll trade myself for Helena.”
Even though Helena knew what Kailun was planning, she couldn’t help but feel a flicker of hope.
She had always been a tool for the Pope, helping her deal with many cruel bishops and followers. In return, she received only strength and a rare eighth-rank Dragon Fang dagger.
“No need. I’ll release Helena when I leave. I can assure you of that.” The Pope retreated a few steps with Helena, keeping a safe distance from Kailun.
She knew that his strength wasn’t as simple as it appeared. If she took him hostage, Afra would definitely chase her to the ends of the earth, which would be even worse.
Now, she could only escape by holding Helena hostage. Confronting Afra alone was unrealistic.
It was strange. How could such a powerful person exist in this world?
The current resources couldn’t support the advancement of such an existence. Moreover, Afra was only in her early twenties. Reaching the sixth rank at this age was already considered exceptional.
The Pope looked at Afra again. After meeting her emotionless gaze, she wisely averted her eyes.
She couldn’t win, absolutely not. Afra was a monster.
“That’s a pity. I was going to let you go, but you chose to be stubborn. If you had captured me, I might have even played some games and chatted with you. But you captured the easily angered Helena. Now, you can only wait for her revenge.”
Kailun shrugged helplessly. It seemed that the Pope had learned her lesson. She finally realized the difference in their strength.
To “help” the Pope, Kailun allocated all his attributes to Helena.
“Hmm?”
The Pope sensed the change in Helena’s strength. Just as she was about to crush her neck, Helena reacted even faster, grabbing her arm and attempting to throw her over her shoulder.
Although the Pope specialized in magic, she was quite flexible. With a nimble bend, she broke free from Helena’s grasp.
Seizing the opportunity, she activated a holy artifact hidden on her body and transformed into a beam of white light, fleeing into the distance.
Helena chased after her for a few steps but gave up. She couldn’t match the Pope’s speed, especially with her injury.
Even if she teleported next to the Pope, she would still miss her.
“Whoosh!”
Just as she stopped, a sharp whistling sound pierced the air beside her. It was like a silver thread stretching towards the horizon, its speed far exceeding the Pope’s.
“Was that Afra?” She turned to Kailun and asked.
“Yes, she played a crucial role in breaking through the Temple’s defenses.”
Kailun looked at Helena. “Thank you for your hard work. You performed well this time. I’ll reward you accordingly later. By the way, how’s your injury? Are you alright?”
Helena touched her aching abdomen. “I’m fine. I was just hit by the Pope’s magic. I’ll be fine after a night’s rest. Speaking of which, I have to thank you for the power you bestowed upon me. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have been able to hold my own against the Pope. How did you do it? This is practically a miracle.”
Kailun casually replied, “Just a small trick.”
“You’re so humble.” Helena chuckled and sat down on a large rock nearby.
Her injury wasn’t serious. She just needed to rest. She felt a sense of relief after surviving this ordeal.
She had missed the thrill of battle recently, but she had gained many interesting experiences. It wasn’t bad.
Soon, Afra returned, carrying the unconscious Pope. The white light that had concealed her was gone, revealing a woman in luxurious attire.
Coincidentally, Charles, who had fainted nearby, woke up and stood up unsteadily.
He shook his dizzy head and looked at the Pope with blurry vision. In his eyes, the Pope was still as glorious as ever. The only difference was that the Pope and Pell were no longer enemies.
They seemed to be talking about something. There seemed to be two extra people present, one with silver hair and the other in luxurious clothes.
“Your Holiness, are you alright?”
He stumbled towards them.
“I’m fine. Thank you for your hard work. Stay there and don’t move. I’ll have someone treat your injuries later.” Kailun, enveloped in white light, imitated the Pope’s voice.
“I’m fine. It’s just a minor injury. I only lost an arm and a leg. I’ll recover after some rest. But didn’t Pell betray us? Why…”
Charles frowned, looking at Helena sitting on the rock. He couldn’t understand what was going on.
“It was all an act. Pell has always been my most loyal subordinate.”
Kailun put a collar on the Pope. “Look, our enemy has taken the bait. As long as we capture her, Kailun will definitely come to us. Don’t ask who she is. I can only tell you that she’s one of Kailun’s concubines. Although her status isn’t high, she’s enough to lure him in.”
“Huh? Oh…”
Charles was confused. He couldn’t understand.
However, he had never doubted the Pope’s identity and wouldn’t question Kailun’s words. He was only wondering if his brain was also injured.
After listening to the “Pope,” he glanced at Helena. If it was just an act, why had she attacked him so ruthlessly?
He felt like he had almost been killed.
“Alright, wait here for treatment. I’ll take the enemy back for interrogation.”
Kailun lifted the Pope and walked towards the Papal Palace. Afra, supporting Helena, followed behind.
“Farewell, Your Holiness. May your glory last forever.” Charles, supporting his injured body, bowed to Kailun.
Only after they had disappeared did he collapse to the ground, completely relaxed. “The Pope seemed a bit strange today. And that silver-haired woman beside him… she’s terrifyingly strong. But was Pell really acting? It doesn’t make sense.”
Before he could figure it out, Charles fainted again.
Thanks to the chaos in Alaye, Kailun and his group returned to the Papal Palace safely. He even managed to reach the Pope’s private chambers.
With his powerful aura, the identical white light, and his perfect imitation of the Pope’s voice, no one suspected him.
He had to thank the Pope. The high and mighty Pope rarely interacted with her subordinates. Some bishops had served for ten years without even seeing her once.
“It’s much easier than I imagined. It seems controlling her won’t be difficult.” Kailun tossed the Pope onto her large bed.
Afra locked the door and returned to Kailun’s side. “What are you going to do?”
“Let’s learn about the Pope’s daily habits first. Helena, please enlighten us.”
Kailun beckoned to Helena. “Come here. Let me heal you. Otherwise, you’ll be in pain for a long time.”
Helena shook her head, clutching her abdomen. “There’s no need to trouble you, sir. It doesn’t hurt much anymore.”
“Come, sit down. Be obedient.”
Kailun’s voice was slightly sterner.
“Okay.”
Helena walked over, clutching her stomach. She wasn’t used to being close to people.
