The Azure Longsword v2c46

Chapter 46: A Series of Schemes

Two powered armor knights staggered back, their damaged vision filled with cracks.

Eleanor pressed her attack. The second squad of knights behind her charged forward, covering the retreat of the two knights with damaged helmets.

The two knights whose attacks had been blocked on the left also completed their flanking maneuver.

“I’m here too!” A roar came from behind Eleanor. Sidlipha, wielding two battle axes, also charged out, unleashing a Whirlwind Slash at the knights in front of her.

Whirlwind Slash, nicknamed the battlefield meat grinder, an ultimate move. The knights naturally weren’t foolish enough to take it head-on, so they immediately retreated.

Suddenly, a gunshot rang out.

A sniper rifle bullet, fired from afar, hit one of the knights with a damaged helmet. The bullet entered through the cracked military-grade glass, stopped by the exoskeleton lining inside, and the force of the impact almost stunned the knight.

The next second, Sidlipha, stopping her Whirlwind Slash, aimed at him and unleashed a Jump Slash.

Her jump was very short, her feet barely leaving the ground, and her axe slammed into the opponent’s head, splitting the powered armor helmet open, the head inside almost split in two.

After reviewing Asker’s battle against the Black Knight and realizing that powered armor knights were not invincible, the girls had established that “the most effective way to deal with powered armor is to focus fire on the same spot repeatedly.”

And this unlucky powered armor knight, who happened to be the closest, became the first victim of their new tactic.

After taking down this knight, the two girls didn’t pursue the attack, but turned and ran.

The knights were prepared for a counterattack and siege, but seeing the enemy flee instead of attacking, they were stunned.

“Don’t rush in, it might be a trap!” Alfred gritted his teeth, but didn’t lose his judgment. He waved his hand. “First squad, advance cautiously, second squad, cover, third squad, stay back and watch the surroundings, prevent being ambushed! All squires, disperse and scout, report any situation immediately!”

So the knights cautiously advanced slowly, and the squires dispersed, staying within a circle of about 20 meters from the team, vigilantly searching the surrounding debris piles, blind corners of walls, and cover.

Suddenly, a squire’s scream came from the right. The nearest knight hurriedly rushed over and saw their squire lying in a pool of blood in the dark alley, his throat slit.

“It’s a throat cut.” Joel walked to the body and examined the cause of death. “And it’s a throat cut from behind. The killer’s technique was very fast, the wound is clean without any torn flesh, and the depth is just right.”

“So?” Alfred asked. “What’s the significance of the wound depth? I can directly decapitate with a sword.”

“It’s different.” Joel said. “Someone with greater strength would usually choose a clean decapitation, but that can easily damage the blade.”

“If you don’t decapitate, but just slit the throat, then too little force won’t achieve the purpose of killing, and too much force will cause the weapon to get stuck in the cervical vertebrae. This killer’s technique is the most efficient way.”

“So it’s a real assassin, huh?” Alfred sneered and redeployed his tactics. “All squires, from now on, operate in pairs, watching each other’s backs to prevent sneak attacks!”

The team advanced for a while, and screams, roars, and intense gunfire came from the rear left.

When the knights rushed to the scene, they found two squires, one lying on the ground and the other sitting against the wall, both dead.

“So it’s multiple assassins working together?” Alfred pondered.

“No, if it were multiple people, there wouldn’t be any gunfire.” Joel picked up the rifle on the ground and found a deep cut from a sharp weapon on it.

“The assassin first assassinated the squire in the alley and was discovered by the squire standing outside. So the squire roared and aimed at him and fired.”

“However, he didn’t hit, otherwise, there would be more bloodstains on the ground. In any case, the assassin dodged the shot in some strange way and rushed to the squire who fired, the first slash shattering the rifle, the second stab piercing the squire’s chest and heart.”

“The two bodies are more than 8 meters apart.” Alfred frowned. “There’s no cover around, how did the assassin cross this distance unharmed? Or was the squire’s marksmanship really that bad?”

“I don’t know.” Joel shook his head. “Anyway, let’s call back the squires from each squad first. At this rate, we’ll just be picked off one by one. Don’t forget the enemy also has a sniper.”

Alfred nodded and ordered the scattered squires to regroup via communicator.

So the knight squires who were searching around left the buildings they were in and returned to the knight squad in the middle of the street.

Suddenly, intense gunfire erupted. The knight squires who returned first fell like wheat, and the Crusaders on the scene were thrown into chaos.

“Don’t regroup! Roll and find cover!” Joel, finally realizing what was happening, shouted with all his might, so regretful that he almost bit off his teeth.

He had finally understood: the other side did have a sniper, but from the beginning until now, they hadn’t fired a single shot, just waiting for the moment of maximum damage.

When the squires were scattered and searching nearby earlier, because everyone’s positions were dispersed, and the environment was relatively complex, once the opponent fired and killed anyone, the others could easily find cover nearby.

Therefore, the opponent deliberately sent out assassins to assassinate the nearby lone knight squires, making the Crusaders think that this dispersed search tactic was being specifically targeted.

In order to reduce unnecessary losses, the Crusaders naturally ordered the squires to regroup.

And once the squires emerged from the cover of alleys, walls, and buildings and re-entered the open environment, that was the moment when the sniper could calmly and quickly eliminate these targets.

Damn it! This is a series of schemes! Joel was gritting his teeth when he heard Alfred, hiding behind the knights, also roar:

“Where’s the gunman? Determine the location!”

A knight immediately responded: “I saw the muzzle flash, on the roof of the six-story building at 11 o’clock, 400 meters!”

“First squad! Go and take out that sniper!” Alfred roared.

“Wait!” Joel’s heart sank. This series of schemes couldn’t only have two steps, could it?

“What if they’ve set up a trap there?!” He hurriedly shouted.

“Then what do you suggest we do!?” Alfred roared back. “Are we just going to stay here and get shot?”

Joel was speechless.

He wanted to say that maybe the other party had limited bullets and couldn’t keep shooting forever.

But when everyone was being shot at, saying something like “Hold on a little longer, comrades” would attract a lot of hatred.

Besides, he couldn’t guarantee that the sniper wasn’t lying next to a pile of ammo boxes, firing leisurely.

While Joel was hesitating, the first squad of Crusader knights had quickly approached the building.

The loud gunshots from the rooftop seemed to be calmly announcing the sniper’s location to them.

Or perhaps it was a kind of silent contempt.
