Chapter 26: The Medical Report
An Baili was frightened by Lu Li’s expression. “Li, don’t scare me… what’s wrong?”
She gathered her courage, leaned closer to Lu Li, and glanced at the medical report. Sinus arrhythmia? What was that, was it serious? Thinking that she might have a terminal illness, An Baili became scared. Her eyebrows drooped, and she looked at Lu Li with teary eyes. “Do I have heart disease?”
“No.” Lu Li handed her the report. “Sinus arrhythmia is just because you were too nervous.”
“Then, then what’s wrong with me?”
“Iron-deficiency anemia.” Lu Li said. “The doctor suggested you exercise more and eat iron-rich foods. And chronic gastritis, stop taking ibuprofen during your period. Seriously… you’re so young, and you already have so many health problems.”
An Baili couldn’t believe it. “That’s it?”
“That’s it.”
“But I clearly…” She suddenly realized something. The relief of surviving the ordeal vanished, replaced by a deeper fear. “Modern medicine can’t detect it… can it?”
Although he didn’t want to admit it, this was the only possibility. Lu Li didn’t say anything. If they could actually find something wrong with her at the hospital, it would be a good thing. At least they could use modern science to treat it. Now that he thought about it, they couldn’t find the cause of An Baili’s infertility in his past life either. This so-called “price” was probably something beyond the reach of modern science.
The more ordinary the content of the medical report, the more hopeless An Baili’s future seemed.
“Maybe it’s not that serious.” Lu Li comforted her. An Baili’s only support was him, and he couldn’t show his helplessness in front of her. “I’ve already asked Uncle Long to retrieve your mother’s information. Maybe we can find some clues from her side.”
An Baili nodded blankly, holding Lu Li’s hand tightly, her palm sweating.
She wasn’t afraid of death, but she was afraid of never seeing Lu Li again. That was more despairing than death itself.
On the way back, An Baili was no longer her usual lively self. She didn’t make any strange noises or cling to Lu Li’s arm. She just stared blankly out the window at the rapidly receding scenery, lost in thought. Lu Li felt a pang of sympathy and put his arm around her, letting her rest her head on his chest. He couldn’t say anything.
Silly Goose sent a message, saying that those people from the broadcasting club were reading out challenge letters for Lu Li again. The little girl was so angry that every sentence she typed ended with an exclamation mark.
He also received several messages from strangers. They were from online game platforms that wanted to collaborate with him, asking him to release the official version of his game on their platforms. This was good news. It meant that his game was gaining more exposure and attracting more traffic. But Lu Li wasn’t happy. What was the point of a successful career if he lost An Baili?
“Li…”
“I’m here.”
“I want to have a baby for you.” An Baili’s voice was heartbreaking.
“We’ll have a chance. We’ll have a chance in the future.” The future. Always the future. Lu Li hated his own lies. They were so clumsy, so crude, but An Baili would always believe his ridiculous lies. She obediently hummed in agreement. “Do you want a boy or a girl…”
“As long as it’s yours, I’ll love it.”
“Hehe…”
After giggling, An Baili sighed softly. “If only I could be reborn as your and Jingyi’s baby. Then I could be with you again.”
“Wouldn’t that be incest?”
“Don’t you like it?”
“…I like anything that’s An Baili.”
“Hehe…” An Baili let out a long breath. “Okay! An Baili is back to full health!” She broke free from Lu Li’s embrace, put one hand on her hip, and made a “V” sign with the other.
January was the coldest month of winter. The small ditches by the roadside were covered with a thin layer of ice, and the pine needles were still covered with a layer of unmelted snow. As the final exams approached, the atmosphere in the classroom became increasingly tense. The students were anxious about the upcoming exams, but also excited and impatient for the winter break. In this tense atmosphere, the broadcasting club’s daily “challenge letter reading” segment became the only source of entertainment. Many students would comment on the wording of the challenge letters, and some were even looking forward to whether Lu Li would actually accept the challenge from the first-year student.
Baili called in sick again this morning. Chu Jingyi marked her absence on the attendance sheet, her face filled with worry. Lu Li was the person she liked, and An Baili was her best friend, second only to Lu Li. Even though she knew that An Baili was her “love rival,” the Class Monitor didn’t want to see her suffer.
The pure-hearted girl glanced at Lu Li’s seat. It was empty. He had been sitting there reading just a moment ago.
She pouted. He was truly troublesome. Where did Lu Li run off to again?
Silly Goose looked at the clock. It was time for the morning broadcast. Those guys from the broadcasting club must have prepared a new script to tease Lu Li and Wen Hupo, right? It was all their fault that Hupo had become increasingly quiet lately. What girl wouldn’t care about her reputation? Those boys were just trying to attract Wen Hupo’s attention by doing things that would annoy her, not realizing that they were only making her dislike them even more.
Lu Li is so much better… Her thoughts drifted back to Lu Li, and she smiled sweetly. Compared to the others, Lu Li was much better. He was smarter, more mature, more gentle, more considerate, and more handsome… Silly Goose counted her crush’s merits in her mind, forgetting about the task at hand.
Just then, she saw the president of the broadcasting club walking towards her with a group of members. Strange, shouldn’t they be in the broadcasting room at this hour? Were they looking for her?
She couldn’t help but pout, anger flashing across her face. How dare they come to her after what they did?!
The moment he saw Chu Jingyi, the president of the broadcasting club said hurriedly, “President Chu, President Chu, you have to help us!”
Chu Jingyi also served as the vice president of the student council, so it was correct to call her President Chu. The president of the student council was a senior girl who was busy participating in the summer camp program at Chuanhai University of Political Science and Law and had already left school. Chu Jingyi was in charge of the student council now.
“Help you?” Chu Jingyi was disgusted, but she didn’t forget her duty. “Hmph… What is it this time? If it’s about Lu Li and Wen Hupo again, you can leave!”
The chubby president of the broadcasting club looked distressed. “President Chu, someone has occupied the broadcasting room! We can’t get in! More than a dozen of our members have been waiting outside for over half an hour! Even the lock has been changed! Can you check the surveillance footage and see who did it?”
Something like that happened? Chu Jingyi looked suspicious. Was there anyone in this school who was that bold?
Just as the Class Monitor was about to agree, she suddenly heard a test sound coming from the PA system.
“Testing… testing… Can you hear me… testing…”
The members of the broadcasting club looked at each other, and the president exclaimed, “Someone really did occupy the broadcasting room!”
Silly Goose ignored them and listened intently.
“Testing, testing…” A familiar voice came from the PA system. “Hello everyone, this is Lu Li.”
