Chapter 223: Tonight’s Raid, May the Pope Be Safe
“Please take her back. Her task is complete.” Kailun shooed Ottovia off his lap and asked Afra to escort her back to the dungeon.
“Where’s my reward?” Ottovia held out her hand to Kailun.
Kailun casually tossed her a bottle. “Here you go.”
Ottovia’s eyes lit up as she caught the bottle, but when she saw the clear, transparent liquid inside, she frowned.
Although this was the true appearance of Holy Water, she now felt like it was a fake.
She had no trust in Kailun and couldn’t help but suspect he was trying to cheat her.
“Another bottle.” She stood her ground, her expression firm.
Kailun was slightly taken aback. He looked at Ottovia with a strange expression. “It seems I underestimated you. You really have a strong taste. Carol, give her that thing.”
“Oh~” Carol rolled her eyes at Kailun. It was strange to think that her master had entrusted her with that kind of thing.
But what was even stranger was Ottovia. Why did she want that instead of tears?
So weird.
“Here you go.”
Carol got up from her chair, walked over to Ottovia, and handed her the small bottle.
“Tha… thank you.”
Overwhelmed by fear, she even thanked Carol. Her previous domineering aura vanished completely, replaced by the meekness of a tamed wildcat.
Carol simply smiled without replying.
“Alright, stop teasing her. It wouldn’t be good if she gets scared silly.”
Kailun took the normal Holy Water from Ottovia’s hand and patted her head.
Perhaps because of Carol’s presence, Ottovia didn’t resist his touch.
After Afra took Ottovia away, Kailun continued, “I believe you’ve all figured it out. We’re close to unraveling the mystery. Ottovia knows much less than I expected, which is good news. Next, I’m going to the Temple of the Celestial God to test the waters with that entity called Fate. Hopefully, I can gain something.”
“Do what you need to do. I support you.” Illusion finished her dessert and wiped her mouth.
Fate hadn’t fully recovered yet. She trusted Kailun’s judgment.
From the current situation, they had the advantage.
In terms of absolute strength, the combined power of Kailun and Afra was at its peak. They could even hold their own against the entire Temple of the Celestial God, let alone a divided one.
Fox’s gaze shifted between Kailun and Illusion. “I don’t quite understand what you’re talking about, but if you need any help, just let me know.”
Kailun: “Fox, you’ve already helped a lot. You contributed greatly to the construction of the teleportation magic circle. I’ll reward you accordingly later. For now, you can help keep an eye on Ottovia. I’ve discovered something interesting about her teleportation magic. She can’t escape the manor anymore.”
Kailun had noticed Ottovia’s attribute increase last night. Combined with the fishy smell on her breath, he could deduce why she had asked for the “Holy Water.”
However, this increase wouldn’t be a game-changer. Even if she could teleport again, she couldn’t escape his manor.
He had to thank Ottovia. If she hadn’t given Rose the magic scroll, he wouldn’t have been able to set up the countermeasures.
Thanks to her, Kailun had not only mastered new magic but also restricted the Unlucky Entity.
“That entity is actually quite dangerous. If possible, it’s best not to corner her.”
Isabella interjected. Although she had just teased Ottovia, it didn’t affect her judgment.
“Don’t worry about that. Ottovia’s tolerance is much stronger than I expected. Plus, she’s terrified of Carol, so we can control her easily.”
Kailun cut himself a piece of dessert. “In short, you’ll be guarding the house while I’m away. Don’t leave the manor unless absolutely necessary.”
Having obtained some useful information, he had to reply to the Pope. She might have been waiting for him all morning.
However, he planned to go at night. Before that, he had to mobilize the miners who had infiltrated the Temple of the Celestial God.
A chaotic Alaye was safer.
…..
Meanwhile, Ottovia, clutching the “Holy Water” she had been longing for, returned to the dungeon under Afra’s escort. As soon as Afra left, she burrowed under her covers, her back facing Rose.
“What did that demon call you for?”
Rose, in the opposite room, walked to the bars and asked curiously.
Ottovia, still facing away from her, took out a crushed Unlucky Flower from under her pillow. “None of your business. Little girls shouldn’t pry into adult matters.”
Rose gripped the bars tightly. “Yes, you’re an old hag. You’ve lived for tens of thousands of years, and you’re still being toyed with by Kailun. What’s there to be proud of? It’s just the pot calling the kettle black*.” (something you say that means people should not criticize someone else for a fault that they have themselves)
Hearing herself being called an old hag, Ottovia was slightly annoyed. She took a bite of the Unlucky Flower and chewed. “I achieved the ninth rank at the age of thirteen. I’ve witnessed the ups and downs of the world. The time I’ve spent in slumber is hundreds of times your age. If we’re talking about human years, ten thousand years is not even considered infancy for me, an immortal being. As for you, you’re just a short-lived creature.”
Her so-called immortality wasn’t due to her race but her innate talent.
The gift of time made her immune to aging. As long as she didn’t suffer excessive losses, she could live forever.
Fate was similar to her in this aspect, but they had chosen different paths.
She had spent most of her time in slumber. Calling her an old hag was an insult.
In the past, she could have killed Rose with a single breath. Why would she allow her to babble behind her back?
Suddenly, Ottovia remembered something. She stuffed the remaining Unlucky Flowers into her mouth and swallowed them. “Do you want immortality? As long as you submit to me, I can give you a chance. Immortality isn’t difficult.”
Immortality wasn’t difficult. What was difficult was transcending one’s limitations, connecting oneself to the world, and becoming an indispensable part of it.
Frankly speaking, Rose didn’t have the qualifications.
Among the people she knew, besides Fate and the entity who had mastered space, only the white-haired girl she had seen today had the potential.
Kailun and Afra also had a slight chance, but not as much as Carol.
Thinking of Carol’s smile, Ottovia, lying in bed, shivered. She pulled the blanket over her petite body, feeling a chill run down her spine.
After doing all this, she poured the “Holy Water” that Carol had given her into her mouth. The even stronger fishy taste assaulted her taste buds, making her face contort.
She wasn’t sure if it was just her imagination, but the “Holy Water” she drank today seemed fresher.
She licked her lips. It even tasted a bit salty. Did they add salt?
Meanwhile, Rose fell silent. She suddenly felt that immortality wasn’t appealing. It meant being bullied by Kailun forever.
Her vision of the future was filled with Kailun, even if he was always the villain.
